Costumer: I found a 40 line python script on Stackoverflow to do that.
Dev team: ok, now... how many lines you think we will need to put the python interpreter, libraries and your 40 line script inside an Android and iOS apps with legacy code?3 -
At an event and the speaker says "No one develops native apps anymore".
I am next,talking about developing native android apps.8 -
Maybe it does some sort of calculation to let us know who is going to call next by accessing calls? #facepalm5

I used Android studio on a laptop with 4 GB RAM.. and tested apps on emulator.

Android development is such an enormous realm. It's simply incredible.
Even after more than 2 years of programming android apps, I can experience a different exception every day!8 -
The reason I wont be buying another iphone but instead switch to android:
- No yearly 100$ license to publish apps
- No mac required
- Heaphone jack16 -
This hurt me so deep. Feel hopeless. He want it fast , 2 Apps for iOS and Android ( that means 2 for Android and 2 for iOS) in this short time with overly complex requirements (as in the documents).

How to develop Android apps -
1. CTRL + C, CTRL + V, CTRL + C, CTRL + V...

Can we talk about changelogs for a second?
Almost every major app in the play store has changelogs like "Improving your experience" or "We did some changes to enhance your experience".
Wtf is this bullshit. Is it that hard to write the actual changes in the changelogs so that I know what got changed, huh?
Guess its kinda hard to write " We are shoving more telemetry crap down your throat" in a changelog.
Fuck sake.14 -
I released my first legitimate Android app to production a week or two ago, and it already has over 50 downloads on the Play Store! 😄😄😄12

HOLY SHIT ANDROID 8 IS FUCKING PERFECT! MY OP5 JUST STARTED IN 5 SECONDS! AND THE PARALLEL APPS ARE FUCKING GREAT TOO! SOO MANY FEATURES!10

Just switched to an iPhone after being on Android since Gingerbread. First thing I've done is lock down iCloud almost entirely and use Google's apps. Things are swell.9

Taking a class on Android Development. I'm mostly teaching myself here. But it's fun to start diving into the world of designing apps. Here's a picture of my current app. It's not much but it's a good start I think13

It was a very old story. A friend of friend asked that how to get apps in my new phone (Android). I told him to check out the Android Market. He asked me for the address.

"Why not adding fancy buttons when you could fix serious issues" - Android devs everyday
Oh, yeah, and the battery issue without having the ability to change the behavior of app, background apps and whatnot. Cuz battery is the forbidden apple that Android loves to feed on so muchhhh1 -
Props to the devs who made this app, literally does nothing but still have 1 million dowloads and tons of 5 stars.6

Several rants ago I promised to drop a bombshell about Android. What took me so long was my research.
I wanted to measure the extent of Google’s background data mining. I put Android at a significant disadvantage — it was Redmi 6, a device with a 5-year-old half-dead battery that was heavily used by my partner. The only change was me installing Lineage OS + microG — a private, degoogled combo that has no quality of life ramifications. Google Play Store opens, apps download. MicroG emulates Google Play Services — maps, banking and other Play Services-dependent apps work flawlessly. This made a huge difference.
Before degoogling, this phone lasted one day tops on standby. Now, with Wi-Fi connection enabled, apps auto-update working (one game I had installed auto-updated during the test), and no battery saver engaged, I was able to pull ELEVEN DAYS on full charge. Battery saver promised even more uptime, but I considered that cheating.
Modern phones have modern screens that drain battery quickly. Yet, they also have 4000+ mAh batteries. If your Android smartphone performs worse than mine in a test like this that doesn't use screen, kiss your privacy goodbye.24 -
Was talking to a woman who recently found her lost phone.
After talking about apps which track your phone I asked her if she had an iPhone or an Android.
Her response: "I've just got a Samsung eh"7 -

Hello! I am a hobbyist game Developer.
I recently made a game for Android and I would really appreciate it if you downloaded it! I am open to your critique at what's good and what's not! Anything that you think would make the game better?

2017 was a dream come true literally.Long story short, I quit my job of 6 years as a PE teacher, studied Android Development through Udacity's Nanodegree program, moved my wife and kids out of our house (we were renting), moved in with my in-laws, Trusted God, learned how to build Android apps, applied at numerous tech companies, got offered 2 jobs, got hired as an Android Developer in Tennessee in December making almost more than twice I did as a teacher. My first day of work is January 8th. What a year it's been!6

Dad: And what do you code?

I'm sick and tired of apps sucking Apple's dick and making their apps the best thing ever for iOS but it being total shit for Android. Go fuck yourself cuntbags.11

What do you guys think of codecademy, free code camp and their likes? Please recommend good learning platforms better than these for absolute beginners.
Also can you use android studio for java programs and not just android apps?17 -

I have that friend who keeps telling me that he doesn't like java just because it's slow! (I hate this excuse).
Friend: look what java did to Android, it's because of java that iOS is faster tham Android.
Me: whaaat!! do you know that Android OS have nothing to do with java? it's C++ you...
Friend: No it's Java, we develop Android apps with java

Android O. Curse for dark theme guys 😢. Not to mention half the apps on my phone crash right now.
P.S. I hate these new backward compatible emojis too.9 -
I'm working on a project that integrates your Android phone with your PC. Stuff like file transfer, sending SMS and notification sync. I just had an idea for an awesome feature. Started researching and found that the Android API exposes exactly what I need. Full of motivation I started coding until I realized that the permission I need cannot be granted to third-party apps. Happened the second time. Fml

Well, guys... Every time I'm facing a weekend, I expect the whole days just coding, developing my own apps for Android. But in fact I'm loosing my time watching videos online, playing games, procrastinating... What's wrong with me?10

1. Would have learned Android app development using Kotlin by wk 200
2. Done with machine learning by wk200
3. Would upload my own apps on google play store.
4. Buy a new laptop with my own earned money.7 -
More than 3GB ram is useless on android phones. Change my mind.
I bought cheap lg g5. It has 4gb ram (my old phone had 1gb ram). I have opened chrome with 4 tabs, an AAA game, devRant, Instagram, a vpn app, android settings and I'm listening music. There is still free 1,2 gb ram. Also this is not my everyday usage. I use maximum 3 apps at same time.22 -
I made the world's most toughest Android game. Being a web designer, to get into game development was a waste of time but I managed to make the game though it looks like shit but it makes flappy bird a child's play.

Finally bought a macbook for my android app development. Paid 1600 EUR for 2015 MID mbpro with 512GB SSD, 16gb ram, 2.5ghz quad core i7 cpu and dedicated gpu. I know I overpaid but I couldnt fkin stand working on windows anymore. I spent one year with fcking windows building android apps. Making apps on windows is fking impossible. And dont even get me started on new crap macbooks starting from 2016 :/19

The fact that there are code editor apps for android just changed my life. Now I can buy a small bluetooth keyboard and code on the go.5

Hello everyone.
I'm switching phones from Android to iPhone. Mostly because of stronger security policies, longer support for security updates and whatnot.
I would like to know what useful iOS apps you use. Does not have to be dev related. Just hit me with your best shot.
I know that there will be people screaming MUH ANDROID. I don't really care. You do you.22 -
Bought a new android phone and spent an hour:
* uninstalling apps
* disabling automatic updates
* disabling recommendations
* disabling sending anonymous usage data
* disabling notifications
It's like playing hide and seek but without fun4 -
Android, please fuck off. I cant install/update apps because i don't have enough space. So 1gb of free memory is not enough for a 10mb app?
This is my 3rd android phone, and I've had the same issues on all of them.
Probably getting a iPhone 7. Sad, i know :(19 -

Because all the stock Android versions do not have a "DARK MODE".
If they were human developer's they would have included it.

Designer makes an app Mockup using an iOS template. I make the android version and the ios dev makes his version.
Upon completion, the client rejects mine saying that I forgot to put back buttons in the top left corner of each screen.
My face when he didn't reject the ios version for not having a hardware back button. 🤦♂️ -

Bought a Chromebook last weekend. Best. Decision. I've. Made.
It's so great. It's so light, it uses USB C to charge (so when I go to visit my parents halfway across the country, I can bring 1 cable for my phone, switch, and laptop), and it's the perfect Android development device, since it runs Android apps and you can use Android studio within crouton.
I have never loved a new device so much, and I remember the days when I mocked Chromebooks because they sucked. Android app support turned that around.4 -
Ad an Android dev, I hate that hybrid solution like cordova, react native or similar frameworks. Companies sell their apps for ridicolous prices, so every native Android/ios dev need to get it's work faster and for a lower price.
Customers can't understand that hybrid app are faster to create but works worse. I'm hating you, hybrid-guys17 -
Just got myself an iPhone se. Was proud android fan for 4 years.
No hate, but android apps really feel like cheap knock-offs.
I'm never coming back.24 -

Flutter is the best SDK I've ever used in my life. So insanely easy to learn and use, and it lets you build both Android and iOS apps?!?!
If you haven't checked it out, even if you've never touched mobile app dev, give it a shot. Super fun and super easy.13 -

Dev.to app asks me to type in my github username and password into the github login page opened in their app. Is there no better way to do OAuth on Android apps?8

fuck google! fuck the people updating the android OS! fuck android!
first you guys removed the feature to connect wifi using WPS and then promised to bring it back but instead brought a completely different feature
then you make all the clipboard manager apps obsolete. only keyboard apps can be clipboard manager otherwise the rest of them are screwed.
app needs my location permission just so that it can turn on my wifi! wtf!
app needs bluetooth, wifi & location just so that it can send data from one device to another device offline? why bluetooth? are we going back to 1970s?
fuck you google! fuck android!
I really wish some other companies fork it and removes all the clutters and makes it better.19 -
Fucking hell with React Naive! Spent all day making a screen and that bitch looked messed up on Android but working as intended on iOS!

I studied BS Computer Science and one of our requirements is our thesis. All of the groups in our section proposed Web Based apps and got rejected because web based apps are too common. So we have no choice so all of us proposed mobile apps. Mobile Development is not in our curriculum so we have to teach ourselves during the development of our thesis.
All of the groups' dev collaborated and taught each other except one group, my group. Since I am a lazy motherfucker, I didn't taught myself how to develop a mobile app (android). So I made a web based app with responsive design, purchased my own domain, used android studio's webview and voila, a mobile app with a web based admin.
P.S. We got the best thesis award.3 -
I feel like this app needs a notification counter like numerous other social media apps on Android.
I want to get notified, if someone commented on my rant and so on.
Would be nice, if both of the devs could see this message :)18 -
What the fuck Microsoft !! Your android apps are total piece of shit! Fucking outlook Android app don't have support to view doc file which is created using your shitty Microsoft teams portal.
If I click on that doc file link through my outlook app, you redirect me to chrome.
Ok that's still acceptable. But the real shit starts now. You tell me that your browser isn't supported! Is this fucking joke?? Who in the world develops a website which can't support latest version of Android chrome?
Now that I have installed your shitty Microsoft teams app, it doesn't show up in "open with" options. Clicking on that link is still redirecting to the chrome saying that browser is unsupported.
Also, your shitty Microsoft teams app can't edit fucking doc file. When I click on your Microsoft word icon, You again ask me to install Android app for Microsoft word.
Seriously fuck you Microsoft and your shitty apps!1 -
Thought the day would never come but... I'm starting to hate android as an operating system...
It's just becoming so inconsistent and fragmented, it's almost at windows level of inconsistent.
Now either google should start regulating the app store and android itself or completely ditch android as a complete stand alone OS.
I would personally seperate android into a runtime and focus on fuschia by building the android runtime into it, that way it could pull system UI element design and such rather than have the user build apps that look completely out of place and don't follow rules like dark mode, theming and the such...
I'm not going to jump ship into iOS because fuck iOS but just really hope google really starting tightening android up else I feel like it's just going to starting breaking more and more into a steaming mess.5 -

Give up. Share Target API is already on Android, even in garbage like Samsung Internet. Desktop native apps are already history, mobile apps are sure to follow. I remember when Android brought new innovative functionality and the play store offered hundreds of apps to customize your phone and so on. (Compared to my previous phone)
Now I feel like every new version, if it's Android or iOS, just adapts more to fit the common user. The apps I mentioned still exist but the store offers your trends that - yea, suck (hello social networks)! It's not a phone with new features anymore but a phone that's better for fucking braindeads. And I dislike that. I am not the common user.6 -

Android development is so frustrating. Seriously, Android studio is such a bloated piece of... I found that is easier to make apps in open source game engines rather than that headache of a software. On the other end, most of these engines are not supported by my budget laptop because it doesn't have OpenGL...

Hi, so I want to get into Android App development.
I know the basics of Java and I have already written some simple apps with Java.
However I would like to get more serious with it and now I wonder if I should directly start writing apps in Kotlin or if I should write them in Java.8 -
Flutter has most pathetic support for background job execution 😡, it's not worth learning, until the framework matures enough8

For my design thesis I'm gonna design a banking app for kids. And i'd like to have a look at competitors apps screendesign.
Is it possible to open android and/or iphone apps in android studio/xcode in order to have a look at the screen designs?

Question & Android
Is there a way on android to limit what apps are allowed to use mobile data and what are only allowed to use wifi?11 -
Hello, folks, I'm starting to learn Android Studio and for the same, I've attended this workshop held at University which was not very helpful in certain aspects. The guy/mentor assumed that we all knew what is Firebase and started dropping knowledge bombs about firebase and integration with Android Studio(Apps).
So, coming to the fundamental question i.e. I'm reading SO 'Documentation' which is still in beta, I find it useful, as it is scratching the basic surface. What are other sources to learn about Android, of course, sources which are not deprecated?6 -
Going to start learning about Android development. I already know java and I'm at beginner level in windows phone apps.
Any suggestions would be great, thanks.2 -
Trello's android app doesn't give you the option to choose a board when you make a widget. It just picks one itself based on seemingly arbitrary requirements. Thankfully, trello has a brilliant open API, so there are several capable third party apps.

I loved you Xamarin.Forms I really did.
I defended you everywhere... Released 5 apps.
You FUCKING SUCK, no svg support (no none of the apis work), startup time is FUCKING insane, i could go on for hours......
Please any Android Developer out there is there any smooth transition to native? (Dont tell me about Js bullshit)
Help me fell the Native Power of Android.

I opened "About" screen
I read "Write native Android/IOS apps with JavaScript"

No android SDK version is installed anymore, apparently.

I've read that devRant is using javascript and the likes, what I'm wondering is how one uses javascript for android apps. I know PhoneGap exists, but I also read that there is some performance issues with it. what does devRant use?2

Currently there is a lot of work done in native application development, like android/iOS apps, desktop applications and such.
I feel like those will be replaced over time by websites and electron based apps.
I just don‘t see native apps in ten or twenty years from now1 -

What applications have you all used for developing iOS and Android apps on a Linux machine? I've been wanting to use Xamarin on my windows machine but I've decided to move to Linux. I'm looking for something that will let you develop iOS and Android apps on a Linux platform like Fedora or Ubuntu. Any ideas?13

Well, I'm now making apps for Android in my class. This is going to be fun. (Sarcasm, please don't make me do this)3

Many people adviced me to clone apps so I can learn more about Android development. So I started with my favorite app, devRant :)

Cause there's no really safe solution for that right now, finally release my favorite and verifiable secure linux password management tool for the web and as apps for iOS, Android and Windows Phone - including online synchronization, so you can access your passwords anywhere. At the moment it is still a pure gpg based Linux terminal application.2 -

1. Smart Stack on the left and 4 related apps on right with stack showing the relevant data from one of the 4 apps15 -
Here's some nice UI logic in Android Play Console.
There's more than 50 apps in this account, so I click on Filter to find the app I was working on. Options are "Unpublished apps" and "Draft apps". The app I want is in "Draft" so I click "Draft". Nothing changes, so I figure it's broken. Then I try to find my app and it's missing.
Why?
Because some shithole thinks that a filter dropdown should hide what I'm looking for. Thanks for that! -

Not sure if I am Allowed to ask general questions here but here's the thing. I just began making Android apps. I have made a few basic of them and I use constraint layout via the layout editor in Android Studio. Is it okay? Do professionals do the same or do they actually type in the xml code?14

I have a friend that asked me to make an app to interface with Arduino when he realized that I develop Android apps.
The annoying thing apart from him nagging me to make it, is that he still doesn't know what he wants and how it will work...5 -
Just came another iOS app that is an exact replica of its android counterpart! Icons are pixelated...layouts are pathetic..when will people realise that jus replicating apps across iOS and android is the worst thing ever???4

Boss insists in using firemonkey to save time since the same app will work for PC, Android and iOS. They didn't even consider going native. so I coded a simple calc on firemonkey, half the calc functions that worked perfectly on the pc didn't work on Android, and the app took 25mb space while other apps way bigger I make with Android studio barely have 2mb lol2

I found this old book in my basement(it's from 2004). Would you recommend using it to improve my knowledge or would there be too much deprecated information? I already made a few (rather simple) android apps, but never really got to know java.6

1. Reading eBook “Beginners in vb6”
2. Made a calculator with vb6 to help me in Math homework
3. Made few other desktop apps on vb6 for fun
4. Got interested in Websites so started with WYSIWYG Microsoft FrontPage
5. Started learning frontend and backend coding from WYSIWYG Dreamweaver (HTML, CSS, jQuery, MySQL and PHP)
6. Then custom coding on Sublime. Made around 6 side projects (HTML, CSS, jQuery, MySQL and PHP)
7. Started learning core JavaScript and followed by other programming languages
8. Interest came in making Android and iOS apps. I learnt Java and Swift for it
9. Now I span between Web and Mobile Apps -
Devrant bug: If the screen size is changed (by resizing app in multi-view) content disappear.
Apps should be able to cope with screen size changes during runtime - check android documentation, especially for Nougat.

I wanna start getting into the programming of android apps.
Any suggestion where to start from? Any good online courses you can recommend?6 -
got an excellent idea for an android app.....opened play store......found hell lot of similar apps already there :(

So...
Just how long would it take to put a simple spa web app on Google play.
Any pitfalls I should watch out for?11 -
Android emulator would be the worst one for me. To be honest, I haven't used that many dev tech yet, but this thing gave me nightmares.
The one provided by Android Studio sucked ass horribly, and it didn't let me use my dedicated graphics chip (nVidia 740m). If I used it the emulator either my apps would crash or not start at all. After some googling, I found out that this was a common thing more or less...Using virtual graphics on it was slow, sluggish and rubbish with ~1 second delay with clicks and scrolling and shitty screen changes proccessing.
Using Genymotion was no better so I just stuck with the one provided by Google for the time being.
I have to add that most of those apps were tutorial apps, and only 2 were semi-serious. -
So finally I am getting started with Android apps. Ubuntu make claims they install the whole Dev stack for you in one operation. Except you need another jdk. Then know how to tell Android Studio where to find it. Oh, and there's an issue with IBus. And some stuff with LibGL. And X.
<sigh>2 -
Wen I got my first Android phone I came across a make your own Android app ad with one of those "no programing experience needed drag and drop interface" I made a few news feed apps then got completely hooked, then I thought "I want to control everything within the app and not only drag and drop stuff" that thought changed my life.I started learning phonegap and started making Android apps with html5 ,put ADs on and published them to the play store.I then expanded my knowledge learnt Java, mysql, php, wordpress.

I was hired as an Android Developer. Now, being a Windows Phone/Mobile User but coming from Android this wasn't a problem.
Working with Android really convinced me what a piece of garbage that OS is. 50% of the code are fixes for stuff that SHOULD work and DO work on other OSes just not on Android. Often times I got in trouble for Apps crashing due to the Android Phone itself failing it's job which I of course can't fix. Sadly, I'm only trained in Android and Windows Development and no one wants a Windows App, so I'm still stuck with this underpayed job which makes me sad! -
Hm... Windows 11 supported Android apps, and Microsoft Store will give devs 100% of sales.... For now....
Wonder if that includes in-app purchases....
But I sense the return of the Windows phone soon.... If this goes well....6 -
Technically the first things I received money for were some android apps I published in the Google Play Store. They were icon packs that I created the icons for and mimicked someone's android project. After that created some of my own android apps. First paid career job, hired 2 years ago for java web developer at a health insurance company. I still like it, very appreciated here.

How do you guys prefer to hide the API keys you use in your (native) Android apps?
I'm an Android noob and the app I'm building uses some NLP services which are accessed through a key. I searched around and found a few techniques (obfuscation, serverside storage, etc.), just wanted to know what you folks recommend.5 -

TL;DR Thinking whether to switch to Xamarin after learning Android Sudio(Java) for almost a year.
So, I've been learning android dev using Android Studio and Java, and I've made some progress. Not a lot, I finished a few projects for fun/practice the last of which was a project that took 4 month to finish, so I now am capble of making small or simple apps for android, and I have been thinking of switching to Xamarin. What do you guys think? Should I stick with Java/Android studio, or should I abandon it and start over with Xamsrin?
P.S. I am pretty good with both Java and C# so this isn't a concern.3 -
i just want my get my shit done and develop quite simple apps like a customer satisfaction poll that should run on android or any other os. should i go for python with kivy (which would be challeging) or for electron as i am somewhat experienced with webdev? i am so undecided...3

why is kotlin picking up so much hype is it actually completely stable now? Would it be better to develop android apps in kotlin rather than Java for my next app? Is java going to become obsolete/deprecated for android?1

Honorable mention for anbox which tries to do a similar thing Google is doing to run Android apps natively in Linux. (Alpha)2 -
Just got added to a few repos of iOS/Android apps that I'll be working on for a new client. All of which only have 2-3 commits and no further history. Guessing the previous dev was using drop box or something, I'm a little concerned.

Just updated my app and wanted to share it with my developer community.
Do you ever felt the need to play your favorite video on Youtube while using devRant, Whatsapp or any other app?
Now this is possible with the Youtube Assistant built in Floating Player.
You can now watch your favorite youtube videos while using any other app with Floating Player.
Just copy any YouTube video url or click Share->Copy to Clipboard in YouTube app to play the video in a floating window.
Download Floating Player and enjoy your favorite youtube videos.

Hello everyone!
Since this is such a cool community with so many app devs, I though it would be cool to share with you all a project the company I work with its currently developing.
The name is appcoins, and it's a blockchain project that aims to solve 3 big problems that devs, users, Appstores and oems face everyday in the current apps ecosystem:
- the advertising: create a trustworthy advertise system for your apps, where you can actually invest money that will be spent on users that will use your apps; currently is a system where everyone is trying to fool everyone.
- Malware and Adware detection: create a system powered by the community to rank dev's apps, using a reputation system, and dispute by bidding. currently it's an unscalable system, with many detection flaws.
- In app billing (aka IAB): offer a new and easy way for users to buy cool things in your app, even if they don't have access to a credit card or other payment methods. Users will be rewarded by trying out your cool apps. Also opens the door for payments with crypto currencies in AppStores.
This is just a quick overall idea of the all project. If you're interested, checkout the website https://appcoins.io/
If you've any question or suggestion, let me know and I'll try to answer as best as I can, or redirect to my devRant coworkers.
Any feedback you may have, feel free to share it! This system is designed for us all devs, so your input is really appreciated.
Thank you all, and sorry for the long post. -

Ok, let's agree to stop giving applications names that are so ambiguous that they give no clue what the purpose is.
Google Play Store has top 2016 apps... Under "most innovative" is the app, "Eve" by "Glow". Is it a game? General app? I was curious and clicked for the detail...
I never in a million years would have clicked on that! Wow. 😓 -

Alright, apparently, I can't Google.
I am wondering, is it possible, to develop an android app without android studio? And probably without Java?
My idea was to make a web app using mean stack and then just fit it into browser widget and voila.
I also don't believe that all of the apps I'm using are made with android studio...
What should I check out for better understanding of the whole android app development thing?6 -

Google Exoplayer had a bug on some devices when initializing AudioTrack.
Their fix: Just retry on init failure.
So if some device decides to fail more often than Google predicted: Boom!
Exoplayer is used by rarely known apps like Youtube.
And the best of it: The one to blame is not Google or Android. The ones to blame are most likely the Hardware vendors, who think that a custom android for every whatever is a good idea. -

I threw some random android adware i found into a virtual device on my laptop (while swapping like a motherfucker, ofc) and it turns out, aside from the Draw over Other Apps, Install Apps, Location, and Storage permissions, and the blank name/icon, it's an honest-to-God working global ad blocker via VPN. It's shipping your traffic to China and filling your device full of more malware, but it's blocking ads too, so...? Is it worth gutting to remove the bullshit? (Can Android Studio do that?)5

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to learn to create apps with Android Studio and Swift5. However, my current laptop is not okay to work with its 4 GB RAM.
My question is, i am planning to buy a MacBook Air I5 8GB RAM 256 GB SSD. Do you think it is enough for me to learn coding in the first place and create apps?
Let me also state the fact that additional RAMs like 16 GB and bigger SSD size are really expensive in my country. So i’m looking for something that can work Swift and Android Studio (with Emulator) with no problem.
It would be great to hear from you about your experiences and advices.
Cheers!13 -

I like iOS human interface design much more than the Android's material design, though I am an Android user. It has some unimportant design components IMO. I feel that the default action bar title is too big. Also that floating action button is weird sometimes. It hides some important portion of the contents in poorly designed apps.

Someone should give me a Christmas gift by giving me a remote project to work on that will get me paid.
I am a kotlin and python DEVELOPER. "I could work on Android apps and web backend"
"MERRY CHRISTMAS" -
Started with VB.Net, moved to websites with WordPress. Shortly after I wanted more control over the output and started using CodeIgniter, then FuelPHP.
In the meantime, I learned Java to try making Android apps (and quickly gave up because both regular Java and Android APIs are a mess).
A robotics club started in school which made me go back to BASIC for programming Picaxe microcontrollers, then C++ for Arduinos.
Eventually I started embracing Javascript (nodejs and browser) and made it my primary language.
Currently, I focus on progressive web apps and sometimes native libraries/programs with C++ when performance is critical.
All the learning was mostly done on YouTube (thenewboston channel) -
So given how easy and flexible UI-making is with JS frameworks for Native Apps in Android etc, how long is it before they sideline Native SDKs in favour of WebAssembly-based native 'apps' the way UWP/WinUI is on its deathbed?
it's sad but i honestly envy the ease of native webapps, specially rn while making a Java Android SDK2 -
2 years ago(jan-oct 2020) i was a college student giving his final exams. some of my personal stats were:
- current knowledge of Android Framework and associated stuff(android, java, kotlin, making and deploying apps , best practises, etc) : 30%
- current knowledge of Web tech (html/css/js/php): 5%
- current knowledge of creating backend/frontend apps:2%
also
- free time: somewhat
- Personal health: barely caring about
====
Same year i got my first job (oct 2020) which i switched in next year (oct 2021). before joining the next(my current) job, my personal stats were:
- current knowledge of Java : 30%
- current knowledge of Kotlin : 70-80%
- current knowledge of Android and Android Stuff(the framework, making production ready apps, deploying, best practises , etc) : 70-80%
- current knowledge of Web tech (html/css/js/php): 3-5%
- current knowledge of creating backend/frontend apps:1%
also:
- Free time: lol, i was working at 1 am too
- Personal health: even lesser caring about, body fats and thick muscles at various places
====
it will be almost a year of me working for these guys in November and this has been an interesting year so far. the stats are:
- current knowledge of Java : 35%
- current knowledge of Kotlin : 20-30%
- current knowledge of Android and Android Stuff(the framework, making production ready apps, deploying, best practises , etc) : 20-30%
- current knowledge of Web tech (html/css/js/node/react): 20-25%
- current knowledge of new stuff* (cordova, unity, flutter, react native, ios) : 5-10%
- current knowledge of creating backend/frontend apps:10-15%
also:
- Free time: a good amount of free time, like in addition to weekends and festivals, i take 2-4 leaves every month
- Personal health: improving a lot. loosing weight, gaining muscles, getting better stamina at running and other activities
====
So i am currently at a weird place. As from my stats, you can see that previously i was in a android heavy role in a company that put a lot of pressure, but i was able to become a better sellable dev through it.
My current role is also of an android dev here, but we maintain b2b products and i am sometimes asked to fix bugs in hybrid apps like unity, react native and cordova, so gained a few knowledge there too. and since i have a lot of free time in my hand, i explored a bit of web technologies too (apart from enjoying a relaxing life and focusing on personal health)
However my main concern is that am becoming a less sellable Dev. The lack of exposure/will to work on android tech has made me outdated from a framework that was once my stronghold. remember that i joined my first company purely because of my passion and knowledge of android os.
When i got offer from this company, i also had another, $5000/year lesser offer in hand. both of these offers were very generous , but i went with the greed and took the offer from this company despite knowing that they are looking for someone who will act as a developer-maintainer kind of person, while the other company giving lesser pay had a need of a pure android engineer.
So i am currently 24. should i keep on doing this relaxing but slowly killing job, or go into a painful, pressurizing but probably making me a better "android" engineer job ?2 -
