Our testers want us devs to start paying 50 cents for each bug the testers find. But they won't agree to paying us devs 50 cents for each bug that makes it into production.9
-
Just left a job where I felt like one of the best devs on the team. At my new job I feel I have so much to learn from the devs I work with. I'm so happy. :)9
-
So Github went down and it showed how much empathy devs have for fellow devs.
We saw tweets saying things like,
God I can't imagine how freaking stressed out the devs at Github are right now.
Or "Hugs and kisses to the devs at Github. You got this"
Of cause there were the occasional dumb Github tweets.
But in all it just shows how much we empathize with other devs and knowing they are trying their best to handle the situation. For more than 8 hrs. Imagine a black out of something like twitter for just an hour or two.. Gives you chills.
But bravo/brava to all the understanding devs.5 -
"Google does it". I hate that sentence. It's always the beginning of an unreasonable expectation.
Perhaps if we had as much devs as Google we could do it too. But we are 2 devs spread over 15 projects, so fuck off.8 -
How Microsoft devs think about Linux 😁.
This was found inside the index.html of Visual Studio Code editor.9 -
Software company director: we build Java applications right?
Devs: nah, javascript.
Director: it's the same, right?
Devs: no
Director: fuck, I pitched a Java application.
A few hours later...
Director on the phone: Yeah, we are building it in Java...10 -
Client: site is not compatible with IE11
QA: yo devs, site is not compatible with IE11
Devs: who the f*ck uses IE11?!5 -
Trust Me Devs,
In INDIA we use this to WASH DISHES in the Kitchen...joke/meme vim is life joke coding ide vim programming languages programming language vim is love humour meme5 -
Guys I think I found the ideal client
(This was messaged in the groupchat with all 3 devs working on his project)1 -
How do people just go about deleting databases when they don't mean to?
"Ah, a database!"
*Flaps hands at the keyboard until something happens*
"Oops, I deleted the database :/"
(*Posts a rant about accidentally deleting the database on devRant*)
🤔6 -
1. Promise anything, everything to clients
2. Set unrealistic deadlines
3. Devs can't meet deadlines
4. Blame the devs
Anyone?8 -
managers: We're all aligned! Let's work as a team and get this started!
devs: ok...
managers and devs meeting to discuss next features: * canceled by managers *
managers: (word for word, can't make this shit up) we cancelled the meeting, we will define the roadmap for everyone
> WE will define the roadmap for EVERYONE
devs: uh wtf???
one hour later, managers: guys we are defining the roadmap can we have a call to discuss?
fucking asshat, insolent, disrespectful pieces of shit3 -
The world will remain fucked up until the moment when backend devs will get as much credit as front end. Backend devs unite! All servers down so they can see who has real power!10
-
How many devs you need for changing a lightbulb?
10. One for holding the ladder, one for changing the bulb.4 -
Why are devs so fixated on other devs' IDE, OS, programming style and chair choices??
Imagine if every sports player would comment on the way the other walks, bats, the colour of their shoes!
Devs are a bit picky don't you think?12 -
The way most of us devs are spending time on devRant, it seems @dfox might need to introduce a feature named "Reminder" in the app to let devs know that they need to get back to code.1
-
Our client is so stupid that they are currently paying for 9 devs to sit on their asses doing basically nothing just so they can guarantee that said devs will be available just in case they need something changed at the last minute.6
-
Me: Why are all the devs leaving work early!?
Other devs: Microsoft Services are down.
Me: Okay I'll start packing.1 -
The sell: “become a designer, change the world”
The reality: “become a designer, create Jira tickets for devs to fix stuff you’ve noticed” -
What happens when Web devs are stuck with implementing the Android app UI when the Android devs aren't around...3
-
Devs: "Accessibility? Not a high priority for now"
Also Devs (in tech conferences): "I can't read, can you please increase the font size?"
"Also, dark mode everywhere please"4 -

I damn love devs. The humor, the devs easter eggs...
Have you ever wondered what 'git' stands for?
try 'man git' ;)4 -
I think the massive collaboration projects like VS Code are awesome.
A free product that is customizable beyond imagination and constantly being updated and improved by those who use it daily.
The capability of thousands of devs making something together is sweet!!2 -
Fucking hate when "senior" and "lead" devs ignore the advice of numerous junior devs when it comes to technical and process driven decisions. Especially when said higherups don't even code anymore and don't really understand the consequences of their decisions.10
-
After years around devs of all levels of expertise I have found the following to be true mostly of junior developers.
Junior devs seem to like to pick out a single (or few) idiosyncrasies of a language/framework and then call it shitty overall.
While senior devs have seen the small idiosyncrasies of many languages/frameworks and know that none of them are perfect and those quirks come with the territory.
It may also have something to do with senior devs having less to prove and therefore not wasting their time of such useless language debates....
ROUND 1: FIGHT!2 -
Devs: We fixed a bug, so watch out for some changes.
Management: The new values are too bad, you need to change it back.
Devs: But ... it was a bug?
Management: Rollback ... now!
I swear, the moment shareholders are involved, management is just about who has the best lie.1 -
!rant
Love this community, the idea of the app, developers, etc. Thanks everyone for making a home for devs.1 -
I would hire all the devs and build an all powerful AI
So devs can come up with better jokes and not repeat old ones, it's clearly the main issue this world faces3 -
For me, the bad part of being a dev? it is the pay.
I know many folks here says the pay is good. But in Maldives, The pay for devs are so so so damn damn terrible. Even freelance.
Average pay per month for devs : ~700 usd
:(14 -
What kinda music do devs usually listen to while working? My friends (devs) say I'm weird.
Idk, but I listen to slow melodious songs. Am I upsetting the order of things and breaking unspoken, universal laws by listening to Birdy or Ed Sheeran while coding!24 -
That's one impressive Formula 1 lap record for the upcoming race in Singapore!
...Time to notify the Formula 1 app Devs.4 -
After devRant:
The poops were longer
The light was brighter
With devs surrounded
The nights of wonder -
Dev thought of the day🤔
Are stickers for dev the equivalent to tattoos for normies?
Or are devs with hackathon tattoos?1 -
I feel so bad for the Devs of this app, they can't make up bullshit excuses and not bug test their code like other Devs can
-
Not exactly a co-worker, but one of the devs from the client's team spent a few months working in our office next to us. He would always take a nap at lunch time and snore loudly, and eat an apple afterwards and it seemed to be impossible for him to chew with his mouth closed.
Whenever he had a cold and his nose got blocked he would still force himself to breathe through his nose, so it sounded something like a mix of darth vader and someone drowning.
He also lacked any notion of personal space, and would always sneak behind us to ask questions and then put his laptop right on top of our keyboards or in front of our screens and start talking while we still had headphones on. -
Me,: we devs need silence to be able to focus properly, and to develop good quality software.
Marketing guy: we need to hang a frame on the wall.
Other marketing guy: yeah, let's grab the drill and make several holes, fuck those devs.4 -
Love devRant! Where can I donate to help keep the Devs supplied with adequate redbull and dorritoes?6
-
When the house is one fire, and all the devs are running in circles, trying to fix it, and you overhear the PM (while prepearing your 8th cup of coffee) complaining on their phone, about how hard he/she has to work, because the devs fucked up... priceless.2
-
" What's the big deal ?
It's just an if condition right ? " - Every manager / product owner ever.
And all the devs be like #facepalm !rant facepalm moments stupid people change requests doomed facepalm stupidity fml if statement idiots at work nodejs managers2 -
Someone fucking teach these so called devs the difference between HASHING and ENCRYPTION :/ They are not fucking same.4
-
Had another meeting today. The solution architect said two insulting jokes about developers like:
"The devs will nevertheless mess it up"
Devs are the ones who make chaos
This meeting was with a customer and his developer. I was just furious!
This useless son of a bitch needs to learn his lesson3 -
!rant
I see a lot of crap about junior vs senior devs nowadays. I think the distinctions are small.
In reality senior devs have been burnt more in the past by their own mistakes or have seen mistakes by other people. That's about it.
What other distinguishing characteristics have you found?7 -
Devs: There is to much work for the team size, can we say no or wait to the business?
Mgmt: Here are some staff aug contractors.
Later
Devs: They are screwing things up.
Mgmt: Then manage them better, it’s your work they are doing.2 -
I honestly maintain a positive opinion that almost (again read almost) all devs are not inherently evil. Those who are made do those autoplay vids were probably asked by management, the game devs at EA are forced to use Frostbite which isn’t suitable for everything, like RPGs, and Apple devs aren’t trying to maximise profits by limiting so much to the consumer world (e.g the bloody XCode license), but are forced in by this corporate model.
A lot of shit is given to devs and sometimes I think it’s undeserved. In their shoes most people would too go against their moral compass if it meant that they won’t lose their jobs. I’m sure when battlefront was in the works it wasn’t the devs that came up with that whole shitstorm model.2 -
Costumers always ask from devs "What will be the price?" before they exactly understand what they want...
-
Is it just me or do any of you people also hate asking for help with understanding other devs code?
At the same time I also hate explaining my code to other devs, like I have to justify I'm not an imbecile.6 -
PM: OK team. There seems to have been some confusion over card AAA-111. So from now on we need to be specific in the cards and make sure we have AC and a description of the issue
Devs: Thanks, we appreciate that
PM: makes card
Card: Why is it slow (yes, that's the actual card title)
Card: ... nothing else, completely blank
Devs: Wtf?
PM: these are supposed to be conversation starters guys!
Devs: JUST TELL US THE PROBLEM! WE'LL ASK WHEN WE NEED TO8 -
One of two ways.
1. Alot of opensource companies will startup hiring developers based on what contributions they provide
2. The current companies will fire most of the devs to exploit free work from opensource devs offering pennies as bug bounties while only keeping very few maintainers. -
The feeling when, as a junior dev, you realize the code base is a mess and learning from the senior devs is more accurately learning the preferences of the senior devs. There is no "right" way to do things.
Also, how did anyone get anything at scale with JS before typescript!?2 -
Talking about some plans today with back end devs... One person tells me the front end devs couldn't make it... I said: I wouldn't call them "devs"... Person says: Yeah, let's not mention that in front if them...1
-
Literally anything breaks
Management: Devs should have tested it
Devs: What the fuck are testers for?11 -
Along with weekly rant topics, devRant should have weekly polls where you create a poll on opinionated questions like "bash or zsh?". Devs would upvote one & post a rant why they prefer one over the other.
With lots of devs here, the opinions of experienced devs would really help young buds. @dfox3 -
Respect to the devs of this app, noticed a changelog entry "Improved memory usage".
More devs should take ram consumption into account! -
How did we get to the place where mobile devs who basically do 20% (the rest usually done by backend devs) earn 3 times more than the backend devs?
Makes me wanna flip out6 -
Is there a website blog where you can submit tutorials for other devs? And if so, is there a way for devs who find the article useful to (optionally) donate a tip like the price of a cup of coffee or similar?27
-
Today one of the more junior back-end devs told us, that he doesn’t plan to do front-end, because he doesn’t want to make design.
He basically told us that in his view FE devs do design work and that’s it.
What the f**? We have designers for that. Front-end devs are not the ones who make design. Reaaad uupp, boy6 -
> client finds a plugin
> devs implements the plugin
> client finds a new plugin that makes the same than the last one
> devs begin to question client ideas -
To all fellow Java devs out there. Remember the Java life: "We code hard in the cubicle"
https://youtu.be/b-Cr0EWwaTk -
Old but gold:
(Context: https://github.com/formatjs/...)
Devs: Please give us an option to silence warnings. They are spamming the console.
Maintainer: I don't like that
Devs: Can you at least make them actual warnings instead of printing them as errors?
Maintainer: -
Why is it that people who can't do anything call the shots? Devs should call the shots and the fuckers should listen.3
-
Companies: We're starting to rotate people back through the office
Devs all drinking their desks: Please no2 -
Apparently management can't keep track of the conflicting revisions and task they keep assigning to their devs.
-
Seeing devs having only a hammer in their hand is making me sad. At least don't talk bullshit about things you don't understand or haven't tried... Most of the front end devs at my company are like that.2
-
Happy New Year From Singapore!
In this year,
May all the Devs out there be able to code peacefully everyday without being disturbed by that annoying coworker.
May all the Devs out there be able to get clients who understand our pain.
May all the Devs out there be able to work on the projects that they love while getting paid proper amount.
Cheers! Love live devRant and it's community.1 -
Happy Birthday devRant. Still the best community for devs and future devs.
I hope this will still grow and become more recognized in the future1 -
Saw this meme in an article the other day about why it's a bad idea to make your guru-grade devs quit.
It suddenly dawned on my that the meme pretty much summed up all the decent Devs i've worked with over the years - they generally turn coffee and beer into code. -
Nice! no fucking communication from the backend devs to the frontend devs
Got 400+ type issues because backend Capitalized property names!
Well there goes half an hour.4 -
This is how non devs imagine our devs. They tend to think a huge change is this quick. Meanwhile back at the ranch it will take a while and a lot more concentration.
-
hey, devs! A Question
As a student developer how to find the best opportunities and internships????8 -
Junior newbie dev here.
I want to buy "Clean code" by Robert C Martin. Its tad bit pricy here in india.
I wanted other devs (especially senior devs) opinion on the book. Is it worth the buy ? What are your reviews ?4 -
Am I the only one who doesn't like seeing press in the front line at developer conferences. Devs should be sitting there!1
-
Why aren't styleguides made by democratic descisions?
Just ask 1m devs and do whats done the most.8 -
QA/stakeholder person: can you add the following links to the footer?
devs: sure. easy.
devs: oh wait, 3 of those links are 404. Are you planning to create those pages? or were those urls just a suggestion?
<crickets>
devs: ok well for now we'll leave those out.
stakeholder (a day later): hey these 3 links are still not in the footer!
devs: yeah we asked about that yesterday.
boss: the links are there now
devs (quietly): fuck you. -
Guys. Sanitize the Tags input length. Here on devrant. Call the devs, I don't know who they are...8

Microsoft C/C++ code keeps on giving:
https://msrc.microsoft.com/update-g...
Too sad, that Microsoft is too poor to afford good devs. As a lot of devs here are sure, that good devs surely can code safe and secure in C/C++, Microsoft probably just lacks the resources to get such devs to work for them.13 -
TIL the CSS attr function copies the attribute's input to the pseudo-element's content, awesome! (thank you medium.com devs)1
-
Freelancer.com is under heavy spam attack for a couple of hours now, I guess the devs are sleeping.10
-
Devs: We've spent some time estimating the stories, and found that we will finish a month too late. Which stories should be removed?
PM: None
Devs: Which are less important?
PM: All are vital. (read: Work harder)1 -
That's it I'm done with wordpress.
Join me angry devs, let's change the world!

build me a little tool today, which make use of the spotify API.
Just want to thank the devs of this API. Well documented, good examples, easy to use.
There are some good devs Out there 😊3 -
The relative activity on devrant on weekdays is really less than weekends. Glad we have hardworking devs here.
-
When you create a product that is a place for devs to rant, I excepted the product itself to be a target of the rants from time to time (after all, you are inviting "angry" devs)
I haven't noticed a single one so far! Kudos to the devRant team!!!5 -
Reading stuff here makes me think that most problems devs have is because their bosses can't code.
Likewise, most problems bosses have is that devs refuse to understand the compromises needed to ship software.6 -
Reading 'The Practicing Mind' by Thomas Sterner right now. Must read for devs with stress and deadlines :)
-
did anybody encounter any bugs in the devRant app? If yes, I want to see the devs ranting about it 😂😂4
-
Well apparently devs won't last.
Now hear me out without any prior judgement.
Machine learning is booming up at a rapid rate and not long enough for it to formulate meaning to words like humans do. That's when the downhill for devs would start.13 -
Go devs - I'm surrounded by Python developers && non-devs, what's the best way you've found to explain Go? (Go being my first and preferred language)3
-
Started 3 weeks ago, some devs left already, more devs are leaving, the place seems nice tho //confused8
-
All married devs here who married devs
Why did you chose a dev and not another profession?
Of course skipping the love4 -
To the android devs out there, how difficult would you say it is to obtain employment as an android developer VS other devs such as Java developer?5
-
What are the most important qualities you look for when hiring new devs? What are the biggest warning signs for you? We're gearing up for interviewing devs in the near future so I figured I'd ask the devRant think tank its thoughts on the matter.9
-
how many devs working in your company and (thats the actual question) how many leaders manages dev teams?3

!dev
Bringing the funny as the devs say.
Found this a few minutes ago. Hope this 'enlightens' a second of your life. -
That moment when a junior calls your bluff and you respond like sharrup what do you know? And play the experience card.
"Why is there a try/catch in the exception block?"1 -
When, despite it being an Angular app, some of the other devs insist on using jQuery... For everything.1
-
Noticed today that at my company, the younger devs do everything via cli or through the terminal, and the older devs do everything through a GUI or a IDE7
-
as usual... someone presents something in the biweekly developers meeting, it gets highly critizised by most devs, and yet the day after everyones trying it out. Sometimes is hard to understand how devs think =/1
-
To all JavaScript devs in here, what are your current feelings toward the emergence of WebAssembly?7
-
when you give the lead to devs you'll often get all utility and no usability, but give it to non devs and you'll get neither3
-
The problem with extensive insider documentation is that experienced devs won't need most of it and unexperienced devs won't understand most of it
And whatever docs experienced devs do need is never what unexperienced devs do understand.2 -
deploying the apps in production...
Devs: i'm confident enough that i can do this. Docker? wtf, i know how to do it.
after successfully deploy in production, 30 minutes later...
Devs: Hey, team lead. I can't access the DB, why?
Team Lead: what? why? what did you do?
Devs: I just successfully deploy in production using the tutum interface deploy button.
Team Lead: Did you uncheck to deploy the DB again?
Devs: Thinking.... hmmmmm No?
Team Lead: Opppsss, that's good. We can't eat our lunch until we fix it. We need to deploy the db back-up again.
Devs: Did I delete the db?
Team Lead: No? probably not you? LOL's
Devs: But who?
Team Lead: It's tutum but it's your mistake to unchecked to redeploy the db before you deploy the apps :D
DevOps / Software Engineer => IT -
Get a solid educational foundation in software engineering. There is so much more than just developing or programming. In addition be sure you get a solid understanding of object oriented principles. This really makes the difference between highly educated devs and self taught devs. The latter almost always have some lack of knowledge.
-
Been working at the same company for 3+ years. The most frustrating thing is that I'm now grouped with the other devs on skillet. The other devs have been there for 6, and 1 months.
Darn hierarchy. -
A funny thing I see in the software industry is that non-devs think that they know more about any tech than devs, and especially those devs that create the tech.1
-
Suppose you wrote a library for some purpose in a language. How do you get other devs to use it? How does it become known among the devs, assuming it follows proper language guidelines and fulfills it's purpose?2
-
New team structure at work. Six of us. It’s a mixture of seasoned devs and new guys (me). An (subjective) objection is made about something I created. Should I push back or let the senior devs have their way?6
-
Devs can a Webhook be implemented in Android.? What I want is to observe a URL on which the back end might send multiple POSTs for a while...
I suggested them that we can use Push Notifications instead of Webhook but the back end devs won't listen...3 -
Dear devs,
could you introduce categories for the collabs as through the ++ thing they are going to explode 😅1 -
Tried to explain to the department lead that having devs spend more time documenting what we spend time on, asking for permissions to do anything doesn't make the project go faster.
Leads might feel good about having better overview for themselves, but in reality you just slowed down, demotivated and annoy the entire team of people doing the actual work. Noone wants to or will do overtime because we have to ask for permission first. And you took away one good dev to spend his entire days in meetings instead of actually doing any real work on the project.
#releasethedevs -
Web devs, let's be honest. When was the last time you checked your HTML's conformity with W3C specs?7
-
scrum my ass! the whole company(especially the marketing) must be aware and agree with this methodology and not only the devs.5
-
Devs to BA : heres an output for the fields that client requested logic to be changed can you test and tell me if the fields are fine
BA to Devs : client does not test with these fields so we cant as well -
To the new devs out there: code everyday. Practice each day and your skills will improve dramatically.
-
The entire AppSync/Amplify SDK for android is a shitfest. The support engineers don't know what the devs are doing, and the devs don't give 2 shits. It shouldn't take 10 fucking hours to configure an existing API and Auth to work with an app and then run into issues with the code that the fucking SDK generates. Fucking buffoons
