Probably the strangest thing (bug?) I've found on Google Translate.
https://translate.google.com//...19 -
Me: Can you go to that page and see if the issue is fixed?
Colleague: if I go there it breaks things
Me: yes, it should be fixed now, can you please check it to make sure?
Colleague: but if I go there it will break things
Me: Can you just go to the page
Colleague: it broke something
Me: what did it break?
Colleague: I don't know
Me: ...then how do you know it's broken
Colleague: because the gallery doesn't work
Me: WELL THEN THATS WHAT'S FUCKING BROKEN THEN ISN'T IT13 -
Coding has caused a paradigm shift in the way I look at the world. Previously I would look at something and be amazed as to how it happened or was made and then depressed because I would think such things could only be done by geniuses and not by me. Now, I know that complex things are made up of many simple things and anything complex can be kind of deconstructed with enough understanding. Its an empowering feeling knowing that I can create something amaizng.3

Confession.
I am sorry.
I don't know if I am doing the right or the wrong thing.
I never shared devRant with people I know because of three things.
1. I don't want to infect this community with cancerous people.
2. I only have a few friends.
3. People I know have no interest in programming (still in college).16 -
Today @ 4pm:
New dev: I need help with this issue, i've been stuck on it all day.
Me: ok let's look ...... ok, and did you try google this?
New dev: ... no
Me: ... why?
New dev: well this is clearly my issue, why would I google it? I only google for things I don't know
Me: ... ok ... we'll do you know what this bug is then?
New dev: haha ok, fair point, I'll give that a try. Thanks for the tip.
Seriously, should I be worried? I feel worried13 -
I forgot what it felt like to not be the domain expert in a thing. 😅 Have to learn a ton of new things for work, which is great, but I feel guilty for being so slow. SO SLOW.
I know it’s normal, I’m just…. Getting used to it. 😉
Anyway, here’s a cat.9 -
I am but one man. Please remember that I am only human, and as much as I have automated, some things still take time.
Also,
I DON'T KNOW IT'S A FUCKING ISSUE UNTIL YOU MAKE ME AWARE OF SAID ISSUE. IF THIS ISSUE GOES ON FOR WEEKS, IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I AM AWARE. PLEASE, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, LET ME KNOW BEFORE IT BECOMES A HEADACHE FOR YOU. BECAUSE WHEN AN ISSUE BECOMES A HEADACHE FOR YOU, YOY THEN BECOME A HEADACHE FOR ME.2 -
Based on a true story that happened right now.
Dad: "how do i download youtube videos?"
Me: "just google youtube downloader and download them from some site, thats how i do it"
Dad: "WHAT!!??? You want me to fucking google it? I dont know how to fucking google for those things, you're the IT guy and you should know how to do this, if I wanted to google it i wouldnt ask you for help. You know what, get the fuck out of my face i dont need ur help, get out"28 -
Does anyone else not enjoy pair programming? As an introvert who prefers to "work alone" and someone who has to look stuff up frequently, even things I "should know by now", I find pair programming very anxiety-inducing. I'm always wondering if the person I'm programming with thinks I'm an idiot/imposter.8

DigitalOcean have given me heaps of free credit for hosting open source projects / things related to open source projects over the years. They've also given free hosting to various charities I know. Seem like a bunch of genuinely good people.9

If there's anything I've learned till now then that's: You should know how to Google the *RIGHT* thing
Things I haven't learned: How to Google the *RIGHT* thing2 -
Pro tip: never set custom script stuff related to dns server forcing things in a root firewall app if you don't know what you're doing.
How would I know? There's a slight chance that I just went offline for a few days (mobile only) to figure this shit out 😅
All fixed now, though!21 -
I know posts like this one don`t belong here but I`m so super proud of it...
I`ve finally (after like 2 days) finished setting up my macbook-air-arch-linux-kde-plasma and this is what it looks like. If any of you is interested I can share some details about making certain things compatible with apple hardware.
Peace!21 -
I honestly don't get too mad when people aks me to do things like install programs for them. This is not my dayjob, but when you think of it, they're right when they say "you are a programmer so you must know how to do that". We do know how to do that. When you have a question about plants and you know a farmer, you are going to ask the farmer, even though he is not a gardener. He will know. Just as we know how to use computers very well.2
-
Informal poll: how often do you find yourself looking up trivial things, even if you're a seasoned vet? I know I do almost every day.5
-
Hmm best part of being a Dev? I guess it is the fact that you can know how things actually work in inside something instead of looking at it and saying "Its Magic!". It kinda ruins playing some games, since you figure them out pretty quickly.
Other than that, I like the feeling that I know enough about computers and performance and how things work that I can choose the best Desktop/Laptop and stay away from marketing bull. :)1 -
You know what I do when I get upset or depressed?
I put myself in bed. I guess some things from childhood don't change.
Having a tantrum? Time to go to bed.3 -
I don't know if there is an algorithm, sorting these posts so that these type of things happen, but it's happening quite too often 😂1
-
Sunday morning and I'm kind of afraid to start coding because I know that the time will fly while coding and I have other things that I have to get done today...
Anyone else feel the same?5 -
I'm seriously having a lot of fun with ChatGPT and learning a whole bunch of things I didn't know before. The ease of asking it questions and getting a general idea on things is amazing.
Bye bye to my job, but at least I'll know a bunch of different things, I guess 😂11 -
seeing these things make me very uncomfortable, I feel like reaching into the software and wiping it off, makes me wonder how much of a mess this npm ecosystem is going to become, I really dont know much of how these things work. I figured the issue could probably be the same across languages, libraries sitting atop libraries until the whole thing becomes unmanageable. I'll stop rambling now
that's the installation of expo-cli8 -
I fucking hate it when customer changes things in the last minute.
"It's a small change", they say. "It shouldn't take you too long", they say.
You know what? Fuck you.6 -
Holy shit android development is hard. I mean, either I'm spoiled with my packet managers in web development, or gradle just sucks.
I know these things have learning curves but jesus christ it's like hitting a brick wall.6 -
I was baffled when I found out my girlfriend Google's things as actual questions instead of keywords.
I know it's fine considering the search has to work with voice assistant, I just thought everyone did keywords.11 -
I'm learning web development, and this is another small project that I made - a basic code player.
Used jQuery for the first time and realized how easy it makes things.
PS - I know it is pretty insignificant given that people here create much bigger things, but I'm proud of it!
PPS - Will post the previous small project I'd done. It was a browser based basic game.17 -
I got accepted for a Master's Degree Program in Software Engineering!
I'm super excited about this.
Course start next week! I'm freaking out a little, but I know this will lead to more exciting things in my life.11 -
Technology evolves so fast and I see people who know plenty of languages and thousands of things. I always try to keep up, but there are day which I don't learn anything at all and when I go to bed I think about how I'm wasting my time and my existence5

When i started to get into computers i didn't know a shit about Linux, i had the typical idea that is for hackers. Now i see how things that we use everyday like the phone uses it.

Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.
Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for building such a great platform, that allows fellow developers to vent about *certain* things from time to time. Keep up the good work!2 -
I do believe, genuinely that “I don’t know” is sometimes an acceptable answer. If you don’t know, you don’t know. I appreciate the honesty.
But at the same time
I don’t know how much longer I can take “I don’t know” as an answer from my boss when I ask about critical business things HE tasked me with, or things relating to career development and maximizing my time with this company.
Do I need my boss to have all the answers on company revenue? No.
Do I need my boss to at least have an understanding on wtf is going with projects when my priorities get changed mid-project for the 4th time? Hell yes.4 -
So I always start learning JS frameworks and end up getting confused by their syntax among other things. Do you guys know of any good websites to learn vanilla JS? My problem is that I probably don't know enough of vanilla and end up getting flustered.11
-
So I duel boot because I need Ubuntu for some things and Windows for others. (I run some robot sims that don't play well with VM)
This pops up, grub vanishes, and can only boot to windows.
Good news is I have all the important stuff backed up to git.
Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.1 -
Got an Acer 18.5" monitor.
Took me more than an hour to get correct resolution on my lubuntu.
And still looking for answer and fixing.
I know I will eventually fix it soon (hopefully).
But this kind of things shouldn't exist in this days and age :/17 -
When I think how big companies like Google, Amazon, Netflix manage all their services so well (all those load balancings, caching, etc. ), I feel so bad I don't know anything about it. I don't even know how people decide which technology to use. E.g., for a scalable Web app, one can use Node.js or maybe Django (but not definitely Flask, I suppose). Also, which DBMS to use, how to write flawless APIs. You see, I am just beginning my career. Any recommendations (books, videos, etc.) that teach these things? Please help.4
-
Fucking recruiters. When you say "multiple languages" and I ask for clarification, saying "multiple languages and you need to know object oriented design" again doesn't clarify things one bit2
-
Coding seems to help me overcome tragedy and depression.
There are various times when things seem helpless to me, and many times when I feel I'm not in control of anything in life, but coding I know where I am, and challenges are overcomeable.
Thanks coding.1 -
I avoided answering this question because I had no motivation to answer it.
That explains things huh? I don't know how to deal with low motivation. I just try to let it pass which never happens. Or switch to other things I'm more motivated to do.13 -
Stranger Things Fan: Have you seen Stranger Things? It's really good. You NEEEEED to watch it. Now.
Firefox Quantum Fan: Have you used FireFox Quantum? It's safe, fast, and uses less RAM. I don't know why it has such a low market share. You neeeeeeeed to use it! NOW.4 -
Hello everyone,
I'm new here. [OK. Let's skip this]
I want to know where to begin on my journey on learning how to create a program that predicts what a user will say next by storing already said things and by making specific characteristics for the users.
I know that I will need to train it with some data first lol.
But how will it do the prediction. I just need this part of understanding.
I'm sorry for my bad English btw.7 -
I thought noise cancelling headphones were a universal sign and courteous way of saying "I'm busy, fuck off" but apparently that doesn't seem to translate to my team. Every time I put these things on people start trying to talk over/through them.
How else do I let my team know to fuck off?14 -
So today is my 17th birthday. One of my friends got me some chocolate and a bunch of little kids stuff to embarrass me.
One of the things he got me was a rubber duck.
He doesnt know how much I actually wanted one xD5 -
A lot of things dev say are true, but this one I don't believe as much:
Many devs say that it's important for everybody to learn a bit of a basic programming language, to learn about computers and how programs are made. I disagree, I think that instead people should learn *how* things work. Ex, in my school people always use a VPN to get around the proxy. I don't care if they know basic statements, I think it's more important to learn how a VPN works. Most of them don't even know what VPN stands for. Am I the only one?3 -
Hey! I will start as a freelancer in a few days and i want to know what tools do you use in your each day, to manage tasks, time trackings and that sort of things? And if you give some advice will be appreciated, thanks!10
-
My distrust in technology does not come from it being foreign to me, on the contrary, being a developer, I have gotten to know, how things are coded and built.5
-
Algo strikes very often or people just continue to repost the same things... maybe I know the answer. 🤔2

Help...
Either help me be more reasonable because I know I'm crazy, or send money/pc parts lol
https://pcpartpicker.com/user/...
I just want my computer to do all the things so if i feel like doing something, I don't need to worry that it can't handle it. (And I know people are going to tell me to use Linux, I will. But i want windows as a backup)36 -

Me: you probably shouldn’t use an IDE, you would learn a lot more about the language if you did things manually.
JavaFriend: Nah I’m all good
Me: alright you do you
4 years LATER
Me: *gets text* oh it’s from JavaFriend. *opens text*
JavaFriend: “dude so I decided to stop using my IDE’s and start doing things manually and I’m learning so much”
Me: ...
Me: I know. I’ve been doing it like this for a reason.
I know IDEs are helpful and good to use but personally I like to work without them and I feel it helps you learn the language more of you go without it.
If you have opinions on the topic in general lemme know.26 -
I am so fucking sick of people being such shits to people who don't know things. Ignorance is not a sin.3

Me: I feel like JavaScript has buyer's remorse because all day you return, return, return things.
John: That's how you know it's functioning. -
Small things count*
You know how in Android Studio, if you put a string directly into a View's text, it warns you to use resources' strings?
Well if you put there "Hello World", it gives you no warning...
I don't know why, but it made me smile. (Way to go, JetBrains!)

I don't know if programming it's really for me.
I started programming because I needed a way to escape from my life. When I started I was in a really bad situation, no friends, bad grades and other shitty things. Programming helped me to regain self esteem and made me happy.
That's it5 -
I don't know why things work when I do but not for other people. 😓
Request to reset password. I did.
Said still cannot login.
I double check. Reset again and try to login. Success.
Said still cannot login with a screenshot.
😓 I think my projects hate me.2 -
I hate my job (work as a waiter). I am seriously considering quitting in a few weeks, but I want to get a job as a junior developer even though I am not very good at programming. I live in Dallas and am wondering what are the things I must know before applying to a company.6
-
Going through site after senior dev asked front end dev to go through it and tweak it for design and better responsiveness(he and I are back end oriented and have no design skillz).
Things are breaking visually on almost all devices.
Client sends an email saying it suddenly looks terrible on mobile and wants to know what happened. I let him know we were actively working on things and it should be good in a few minutes.
Looking over CSS...there are "!important" tags EVERYWHERE, media queries are in the wrong order and have "!important" attached to almost everything so the largest screen size settings win.
Why do I even bother?2 -
Open AI just released GPT5 and I have been using it for the past 3 weeks. It has entirely changed everything you know about AI and LLMs. Here are 69 mind blowing things I have learnt so far.2

Things to get done by wk200:
- Finish B.Sc.
- Do Intership at Intel
- Get M.Sc. Scholarship from Stanford.
I know it's a bit big, but you have reach for the stars.2 -
I know there is websites that guide you through upcoming gdpr changes*
But I wish there was some website or "awesome"** list that in the same fashion takes you through all things privacy policy, ToS, cookie agreement popup, gdpr etc. to be sure you have it all and it covers the newest standards
I feel I haven't been quite updating myself enough on things like that, so I often miss out a part, whenever I do have to add it myself, but finding it all feels like an endless maze

I know I shouldn't be annoyed by such tiny things, but whoever programmed this display should burn in the deepest pocket of hell. Sure it would have been hard to align those ones properly...2

Feeling so dumb right know.
I have a C# exam tomorrow (on paper) and i can't get my brain to think in code.
I can't focus, I can't concentrate. I don't remember things i normally know by heart. Is it just stress? (Everything is pretty hard atm, lots of stress, lots of problems).
What could i do? I'm pretty messed up right now...13 -
One thing that’s a shocker and frankly very weird for people who have always used Android, is that iPhone doesn’t show any progress notif for anything whatsoever. Like dude.. I want things to happen in background and see progress in notif bar. But no, not in iPhone. You either wait for things to finish in foreground or do it explicitly inside the relevant app.
For example, when you want to send a big video on WhatsApp via Photos, you have to wait on the Photos screen until it’s sent otherwise it fucking fails. Like dude.. wtf?! Why can’t that happen in background?
On top of this, things that can happen in background have so limited processing power to themselves (because iPhone doesn’t like things happening in background; we have already established that though) that they just crawl until done and sometimes fail.
Another thing is that there are no fucking loading indicators. You touch something and then the guessing games starts whether you touched it correctly or not. Like dude.. I know your phone got a superfast processor but sometimes things take time to happen. You gotta give some kind of indication that things are happening ffs!
I know security and all, but dude you gotta give me something! Don’t make me suffer for little things.
Dude.. fuck you!6 -
We have “adopted” Agile as our development process. Now I will be honest that I don’t know everything about Agile because I am very new to developing things in a professional setting. But the person who has been the advocate of Agile always starts his sentences with: “Whatever I have read about Agile..”
You can understand why I don’t get a good feeling/confidence regarding this adoption strategy. Things haven’t changed, just the presence of words like “DevOps”, “Agile”, etc has increased in the morning meetings.10 -
Just published the first part of my dream project on GitHub. Woohoo!
Genie wish #0 is that the world would find a use for this project, although I know that it's my job to use it to make great things so people see how it can be used.9 -
My dad: "Oh yeah, JavaScript, Java, I know that stuff! You know the Mars Rover is actually using JavaScript?"
Me: "Oh is it now?"
Dad: "Yeah lots of things use Java"
Me: "You mean JavaScript?"
Dad: "Yeah Java, JavaScript, you know like building website forms"
Me:" Yeah I know, yeah, I, know... -_-"6 -
I got a degree in music performance. But at the end of it, I decided that I enjoyed the finer things in life, like having a house and, you know, food.
So I struggled through some entry level jobs until folks noticed I had potential, and a kindly manager paired me with our database developer. The rest is history!1 -
I aspire to become the type of dev that understands frameworks and has technical depth rather than the type that just implements things but it's a struggle. I don't know where the foundations are.7

At what point do you know if you're good enough to be a Junior Developper inside a company ?
What are the things you must know and be able to do?
I'm in It for now but my company has multiple Dev teams and I'd like to join them eventually, I know I can Google for that but I'd like real answers not blog bullshit6 -
Every time I feel Im getting my act together (at work) there is some AWS service which I know nothing about and that totally kicks my asss
Geeez the dev ops side of things is a total void for me..4 -
Dear Target App Developers,
I think you left some debug code in your app...
I know you want to know if someone is using a VPN and that's cool with me, I get it.
But when I'm on a VPN your app constantly pops up a modal with my IP address every time I change a page in your app....
Might want to look things over a bit closer before you put it in production ;)2 -
My dad: I don't know why you like programming... you write lines of meaningless things, there is no logic behind.
Me: ...Actually, it's not true... ehm... it doesn't matter... (in my mind: you would not understand)1 -
Failed my Triplebyte interview because even though they claim they are testing for "general programming knowledge" basically everything had to do with web front-end and back-end.
Yay.2 -

Of course I want to finish the projects I'm currently working on and maybe start a YouTube channel about my projects.
Yes I know, it's quite a lot to do, but I don't know if I will ever have the chance to do all that things in my free time again. -
Product Managers: I know what users want! They want 10 different things stuffed into 1 piece of software that does nothing well because I don't understand budgets, timelines, or scope.
Everyone else: How about we do 1 thing, and do that well.1 -
I'm not allowed to talk about the coolest things I've done :(
NDAs always ruin the fun!
But I can tell you that they were freakin awesome. I'll come back to this in a bunch of years :)
Just know it was awesome! -
And for the first time I am delving deep into an open source project(Node.js). I wish to understand the source but it's just different. There are soooo many things I don't know. I hope this will be a learning experience and I would finally be able to contribute to an open source project. 😃2

I hate people aren't as smart (?) as me so their suggestions don't make sense and I can't ask any questions
and then sometimes if I try to ask them anyway they think I'm just criticizing them and get defensive
I just wanna know how things work.

I want to learn C++. I know C#, Java and Ruby. Should I go Directly, or there is some sort of path?
How long it takes to master it? I am a quick learner, I catch things a lot faster.
What impact it has on my skills?
Is it really a nightmare to learn?8 -
What is the best PC spec for development?
Things I mostly work on: Node frameworks, React Native and some Java and C++ (QT)

Sorry I posted late for wk68.

How about a feed where people can ask for help?
I know there are sites such as stack overflow for things like that, but I find devrant's community to be a lot more friendly and just better overall.
Also I believe it would be kinda funny if the questions would not be required to be 100% dev related.4 -
Last update on my student job.
Today is my last day. Even thought it was tough sometimes it was a really good experience.
I worked with amazing people and had a little taste of IT limitation. Didn't had full admin access so I was limited on a lot of things I had to do but that taught me to say no to my supervisors when some things were not possible.
I'm very proud of the final result so do my superiors and colleagues. I'm really impressed by what I was capable of doing and that gives more self confidence. I know I made the right choice and I know I'll continue enjoy computer science as much as I do today.2 -
Have you ever worked in a team that actually did everything right?
I have never seen anyone talk about a team in which things got done.
I'm a solo coder, so, don't really know either way. Sounds like mostly, teams are a mess b/c they aren't done right for the most part?
I dont know actually, but seems that way.10 -

I know I'm gonna get downvoted to hell but the only reason I didn't tried Vim is because thay it has such a shitty logo. It's like stuck in 80s. It's seriously bad. I used to be a designer so I can safely say, design or at least how things look do matter sometimes.14

So I am young 14 year old programmer that just started high school yesterday. What are some good things to try and do for a future job? Should I stop coding until hs is over, do I code casually with free time and then after High-school I will know a lot more? Not sure how it all works15

A senior dev I’ve interacted with only on Twitter, whom I looked up to, who has blog, newsletter, buzzword tweets and all that jingles.

TLDR: dealing with other people is stressful
I hate having to explain things to people and then they still don't listen.
Especially if they know nothing about the topic.... I guess like those little kids that ask Why? all the time.
Can't you see I have other things to deal with, just do what I say because unlike you I already tried ... Or just know what I'm talking about....1 -
That sad sad feeling of deleting my devrant account, because a pesky co-worker somehow discovered my alter ego on the Internet.
I don't necessarily want them to know some of the things I have said in the past. I don't regret said things, I needed to get them off my chest. It is just this person is ... what do you call them? Oh yes, a Snitch! I could see bad things happening if what I said got into the wrong hands.
Any who good to be back, I love this community.8 -

I was wondering !
As a computer geek I would like to know everything from mathematics to programming , robotics and machine learning but as I go , new technologies appear and it's
just like an endless while loop!
I don't mean I wanna stop learning new things but just looking for a more effitient way for doing this!
Any idea about this?1 -

Can anyone tell me what all things a developer should follow in order to be upto date. It's just too long of a thing.
I have been a back end developer, became a big data developer, then moving to becoming a full stack developer. Now I don't know who I am anymore. -
DevRant users (and my wife) are the only people that know that I have applied for 2 new jobs! I’ve already had a phone interview with each. Tomorrow I have a 2 hour in-person technical interview, and last night I completed a technical assessment/sample application for the other position!
Things are moving fast, but I don’t want to let friends and family know yet, until things get a little more certain.
It’s such a weird feeling going to work everyday knowing that my current job may be coming to an end!4 -
How do you deal with those fuckers who pretends to know things but as a matter of fact they are so dumb and can't figure out basic things on their own.
Unfortunately I am working with someone like that .She is very social and talkative. Everybody has a good impression about her and thinks that she is really good at work.
Only I know the truth.4 -
You! Yes you.
I'm sure you know a lot of things I don't, even tho I have a pretty decent education and job.
Universal justice wouldn't be that I get fired and you get my job. You getting a (better) job would be universal justice.
So I wish you best of luck.1 -
Do I need ccna for pentest?
I know it's about network administration but I was wondering if it will help me see things the way the sysadmin does.3 -
How did you learn cyber security, especially pentesting ?
I know that making VM lab and/or doing CTFs and reading writeups can help a lot, but is there any more "formal" way to get into things like pentesting etc. ?
(Without having to pay for OSCP, Sans and all this)5 -
I hate when people use error, bug and glitch interchangeably. They are all different things people. Stop using such technical words if you don't even know their meanings.3

Wishing their was an ability to save images and gifs for sharing later....
I know we can share rants but sometimes sharing things as images are easier then a dev link -

There are two weeks left until the PhD application results are published. But I'm having such awful nervous breakdowns. I don't even know, if it's anxiety or if I'm literally dying inside from something else. From an almost-heart-attack today when I got a trivial and unrelated bad-news email, to keep having weird dreams about things like end of the world and post-apocalyptic life, or being jumpy all the time.
... And it's not like it's life or death, I know that. I know that I can do other things if this doesn't stick. I know things will workout the way they should; I know all of those. But there's just something destroying my physical and mental health right now, and I don't even know if it's just the anxiety for the next big step in my career, or something else, or how I should deal with it.
... Anyways, amannoyed.5 -
I wouldn't call any rejection worst.
I learnt new things everytime I had interview actually they came to me like steps of learning and when I get to know enough I got my first job :) -
I was just hit by this wave of depression. I don't even know why to be honest, but somehow it feels like things aren't going how they should
This sucks man4 -
Saw this meme in an article the other day about why it's a bad idea to make your guru-grade devs quit.
It suddenly dawned on my that the meme pretty much summed up all the decent Devs i've worked with over the years - they generally turn coffee and beer into code. -
I don't know. I just can't get excited about numbers.
I'm a builder. I'm excited about things working from start to finish.
Id be excited about numbers if it was from 0 users to 100 users.
Not 10000 to 10500.
That's not an engineers job, is it?8 -
It must be good to at least know computer networking?! I remember nothing about these TCP, UDP, whatever the fudge protocol shite. I don't remember these megabit and megabyte things. All I do is code from one end to another. Anyone else watched Eli The Computer Guy's series?2
-
Does anyone know good resources to learn Arduino Programming?
I have a basic understanding of C, I am looking for a series (of articles preferably) that walks you through the available libraries and the electrical engineering side of things.5 -
Is it bad that even though I am doing computer science in college I still feel like I am missing a lot of knowledge? Like I’ll come out of college without knowing things that people with information technology will know or things that people with computer engineering will know.
I feel like all the job descriptions out there want me to be a combination of CS, IT and CE.2 -
i know that i want to be a developer because of these two things:
1) You can make money (intellectual property&
2) System.out.println("Hello Handsome!");3 -
Meetings entire day. Management/PMs fucked things up and forgot an ENTIRE system. They just spend A YEAR for the requirements. A YEAR!!! Just unbelievable. Guess who has to shoot from the hip just fucking guessing things to fix it before everything should be in production? So sad. I just have to quit this incompetence. Just…incompetence. I know it is complex but to forget an entire eco-system of applications is just beyond idiotic. One whole year and God almighty know how many workshops and business travel expenses. I am fucking distancing myself from this organization. I have no hope. No hope.3

Anyone here have any experience with PHP? I've never really used it myself and don't really want to, but I do look at things like http://phpsadness.com/ from time to time.
These complaints range from "fairly minor" (some stuff like function names/args and some syntsx complaints) to "how is this language even used" (segfaults in a scripting language, broken things like "create_function", comparisons and ternanry operator).
Of course, i don't program in PHP so i don't know how bad any of this actually is.
Anyone actually use PHP or did use it previously?19 -
My roomies safari doesn't load our college website properly.
Now, i know there are certain things to make a website apple compatible,
But i wonder if he is going to go ' FUCK APPLE FUCK APPLE' like he does with other companies! -
Damn it I have to write a 5 sentence email to get the things going but I have kept myself from doing it because they might answer and then I would have to react to that and I dont know that I can do that right now.

Started working in big firm from past 2 months, I was learning about company, its products and what it does. To speed up things I asked one senior who has 8 yrs of exp, she said she also has no clue how things work here......
Now I know why I was hired as an urgent requirement......1 -

When this development rush nightmare started in october, I thought I could handle it until January.
Now, I just don't know how without destroying myself.
This is one of these important things one should to learn.1 -
Pm: heres this exciting new task that i know you been asking to take
Me: yeeeeees...?
Pm: so document these things and sketch up a formula for this other thing instead1 -
I usually improve when I have to make workshops and courses for school students. Since then I try to look into things as indepth as possible since I have to be able to explain it in multiple ways and know the backgrounds.
I'm also currently trying to read a lot about the things I have to work with. -
Recently started an apprenticeship as software developer and tried to build something with JavaScript... aka. copy pasted a bit and after a while my brain kept shouting at me: "YOU DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING, TAKE A FKIN BOOK AND YOU'LL MAYBE UNDERSTAND WHAT YOURE DOING THERE!" - and I did... turns out that the book is quite old and I finally landed on Codecademy - now I make progress :).
Made some smaller things in other languages before, but never really understood things like objects and classes... codecademy helps! And I can already laugh about some things here :D. This app is great! I feel like I'm part of "something".
Have a nice Day :)!3 -
> CTO: I developed this product, I know it to the core! It's been stable for years, safe and rich in features, how is it even possible that things got so complicated?
The product he developed: -
Sometimes i feel bored of developing but i wan't to, i don't know how to explain this feeling. Do you guys sometimes feel the same ? Like i have a lot of things to do, i would like to learn new things but when i launch Unity for example i feel lazy, bored of it.
I'm stressing about my further carier, will i feel the same and so, stop developing as a job ?
I don't know if i'm the right post subject, and sorry for my english btw.2 -
Landed my first job as a Frontend Developer after interning for 6 months.
While I already have learnt a lot about work culture, I would love to hear any tips, advices or things to know about.9 -

I'm a rather young developer, self-learned everything and started when I was 13 (now 20) but I still feel like I'm a total beginner since I have not yet mastered the things I am OK at.
Php (laravel, since it makes things much easier), js (jquery, bad at vanilla, have used angular and ember but not mastered), node, linux, html, css, photoshop, illustrator, sql, mongo and windows servers
I know little about many things, can create things that are asked of me but the methods I use are rather bad imo.. ex: I finish coding a section of a site, but when I need to add a new feature I find myself rewriting most of the stuff to add the new feature and in the end still feeling like the code could be optimized further, even though I have no idea how.
TL;DR I write bad code, but things work as long as I am monitoring them. I know little about alot of stuff but mastered none of them.
What should I do? Go to school for programming?8 -
I honestly feel like I don't know what I'm doing. Actually, I don't know what I'm doing. From when I used to code to now being a solutions architect. I still Google a lot of things, I forget the stuff I've learnt/know. I feel like there's something that keeps on grabbing all the information I try to store in my brain and chucking it out.7
-
That moment people assume you don't know things because you are generally quiet because they are around their friends. Uhm, I got the job and had to go through months of interviews, tests, video chats, probation periods and got the job almost 3 months earlier than I should and got promoted to a better team, you don't see me trying to demean your job as a call center consultant here around all the developers I know. Just lemme drink my coffee in peace :(

How on earth can you have a good relationship with your client if he can't tell the difference between an App and a website.
Seriously, wtf.
Were not in the "I didn't realize it was an app-looking webpage on Chrome" case, which is fairly common and even normal, if the webpage is designed to behave and look like a native app.
We're in the "I didn't know apps and browsing webpages were different things" case.
Seriously, some people have the ability to fucking use, breathe and even master some technologies without getting to know even the most basic fundaments.
We might stop bettering our UXs. We need to make things more complicated and make users figure out things by themselves. -
A pure r&d project! Get to try out all the cool new things. Yes I know it will probably be out of date by the end of my first day! One can only dream! 😉

"Abstract all the things!"
Theres so much fucking abstraction and so many different ways to abstract shit that I don't fucking know how anything works anymore.
Fuck this5 -
I question EVERYTHING. I question why things are done a certain way, I ask questions on things I know, and don't know. Learning and increasing the depth of knowledge is the best way to become a better developer.
-
I don’t really regret anything because I’m extremely happy with my current situation, but maybe I should’ve gone for a CS degree to make my life a bit easier. But who knows if it would’ve made things better or worse, I’ll never know.

But anything I need to trial and error or experiment and learn I'm way more likely to waste days on for a coin flip of an eventual result2 -
I don't talk about Dev stuff with my friends/family. I try keep keep it to myself. They either get really angry, confused or they try to talk about things they know nothing about.1

What interesting uses for a VPS do you guys know?
I've setup my website on VPS and it only takes 25% of 256MB RAM, despite having mysql, apache2 and other cool things running (which is why I love Linux).
Any ideas what to do with 75% that's left?15 -
fuck my amount of things I have to write is exponentially increasing as I fail to keep up with all the features i need fucking hell
at least I bought groceries before shops closed today. gotta go through my potatoes and make sure they're not bad and throw out all the bad ones and eat any sus ones first
fuck I haven't even began exploring how to do a TUI. I need a few days to explore it but the things I need yesterday are stressing me out so I don't know how I could calm down enough to have a nice deep dive into it and gain expertise if I'm so distracted all the time but coming up with more fucking things I need, fuck
how do i15 -
I find it interesting that most of the devRant profiles I look at only put the languages they know in the skills section, not the things they do with those languages.
Why is that?5 -
My dad didn't actually know what it was I did. He wanted to get me into hardware and network security type things. Basically the kind of things network engineers or systems admins do. I am still not sure he knows what I actually do.3

As a fan of C#, I'll be entering the world of web development with ASP.NET, but there are so many things to learn before getting started! Javascript, bootstrap, css grid stuff, angular vs react things, docker, microservices, http and REST stuff, accessing some remote thing through ssh. I feel so intimated and don't know where to start!14
-
One year since I started programming I feel like I haven't made enough progress. If I have an idea, I don't know how to get started with it.
When I finally figure out a good starting point, I get stuck in Tutorial Land and I feel like I should be able to do things myself with just the documentation instead of doing beginners tutorials y'know?1 -
Most of the stuff I know comes from debugging other people's code. When working on someone else's project, I try to understand what their code is doing and think how I could make it better and if it's possible to extend the functionality to make it do other things as well.

People need to drive fucking less all over !
The air quality sucks !
No wonder these things are aging so rapidly I spent most of my life in the mountains and didn't even know it !16 -
I know its a serious business - but there is a lot of talk re: testing (nuclear) at the moment.
It kinda puts things into perspective when we talk of programming tests. Makes me wonder how military engineers think of testing given that nuclear tests are ultimately illegal (I think) under international law. -
Don't know a lot about them, but I have heard of the 'dev' summer 'workshops' that are basically 5 minutes of some guy telling them how to use scratch, and usually result in a bunch of pompous 5 year olds who "know everything about programming". The problem I see here is that they do simple things with a simple language, and when in life it comes to doing things, they have to bang their head against the wall because they really never learned the frustration of programming.

"So... you know SQL? Great!! Here, I have this project for you to fix a few things."
"What is it?", you ask... SSIS packages and stuff!

Why do I develop Drupal websites for clients when I know they are going to contact me for any content update? I show them how to add, edit, delete, and I still get content update requests. I'm developing things right now, I don't have time to add your blog post, thanks!8

Got any tips for a newly minted Solutions Architect? Coming from a senior software engineer background but want to know some things to think about as I switch to a more hands off architecture role. Looking to take the next month soaking in some inspiration and advice.5

I see a lot of people saying they are programmers and they can't fix other shit. But I mean, using that brain to do other things won't surely kill you. I know you don't have time, but it may be worth taking a while to focus on fixing something else. Just to know how to do it. I do a lot of electronics, but occasionally I've been a plumber, an electrician, a painter and a mechanic.
That said, I know, I'm 17 and I surely hadn't the full programmer experience yet, but I'll try to keep this attitude when I grow up.3 -
I have 3 goals this year.
Move out
Maintain at least 1 new long term friendship
Be more responsible
I have way more smaller things I want to do but these are the end goals. Each entail their own struggles but I know I can do it.
Keep me responsible fam -
At the very start when I learned my first language. Didn't know where to find the "{" and "}" keys on the keyboard. Thought I would never be a dev, since I couldn't write a program without those keys.
Or when I didn't understand the notation of accessing values inside an array. Thought things like array[0] would do some magic to the array and didn't know how to access other parts of an array. I was following a book back then. -
Question for the ones who use a smartwatch: do you think the price (e.g.: 250€) is worth it?
I really like the idea of the facility of not having to pick the phone for some things, but I don't know if it is really that useful. What do you think?9 -
I hope people don't use container to workaround dependency issues. That's like buying a new computer because you don't know how to upgrade a tiny software. We should learn how to manage things properly, not wrapping shits up and pretend it is clean4

Don't know if anyone posted this, but I did a random search for "terahertz computer".
I found 2 interesting things:
https://extremetech.com/extreme/...
https://sciencedaily.com/releases/...
So DARPA actually built a terahertz chip and some people in the middle east have developed tech for a light based chip.
I don't know about you, but I so WANT a terahertz capable CPU.4 -
I’ve got a great idea for an app.
So, it’s like the apps that allow you to pay rent or pay power bills or you know... order things... manage things... all the user interface apps out there that we use... but the twist is... that we could make apps like those / that don’t fucking suck! What do you think? Just make things... that aren’t super shitty and useless and beyond frustrating.
Who’s in?
I bet it would even make you more money than doing a super fucked half-assed job.10 -
Does anyone else feel like their brains aren't working, like they cant focus on anything and this has been going on for more than a week now?
I know there are things to do. I have gone through huge pain created github issues for those things but my brain just seems to reject the idea that it can solve those issues. Just feels like playing a game or just killing time would be best!
Needless to say I hate it.
Happens/happening with others?2 -
Going from web dev on Mac to web dev on Windows. Any advice?
What is you favourite JS IDE on Windows? Any software that will make my life easier? Any other things I need to know?
All and any advice is welcomed.11 -
Question, !rant
To all my fellow Java devs, what are some things that have come out in JDK8 and JDK9 that you think are the most useful?
I know very little about the new features, but after learning about lambdas I wondered what other golden nuggets there might be. Thanks in advance!1 -
Sometimes it’s hard being the only front end web dev at an older desktop/backend centric shop... sometimes I say things that make me look so ignorant but then I’m like “...how do you not know how to write basic CSS?”

I wanted to know how this box called computer works, the screen, mouse, keyboard and all these weird things inside the box.
Now I'm developing softwares and don't want to hear a single thing about these fuckin' boring hardware stuffs.1 -
Hi friends of devRant. I'm looking for some advise.
I love learning new things(tech). I want to try out a lot of things like crypto, game dev, AR/VR, etc. I'm also a student and worried about my career. You know you just can't keep exploring technologies and not focus on a single track. Currently, I'm good with web dev. It feels so difficult at times. I hate leetcoding/competitive programming. So you can guess I'm not great with whiteboard interviews. How do I manage time to learn new things and also be able to land a job in a domain? Do you ever feel the same? Any career advise?5 -
What was/is your plan to make the most of your college time ?
(You know lots of unnecessary classes , homework, etc)
I mean a plan to be acceptable in classes but also make money / or at least learn cool things6 -
What do you guys desire from an API, apart from well-written documentation? One of the things I want to work on is a website with an API, and I want to know what you would want from one. Eg version numbers, error fields, authentication, stuff like that.2

I feel like time is short.
Things about to get real.
Make sure essentials are stocked.
Stay away from DC.
Get right with whatever you believe in.
Help your neighbor.
I don't have a magic ball.
I don't know if things will be good or bad.
But change is upon on.
Ready or not.
I pray to God he forgives us.
I wish the hardest thing in life was writing code.
I wish the world I was taught about when I was young was the real world.
Maybe if things go well it could be.
Look up, pray, and realize you are not alone.
I shall not fear the dark of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day.
Cheers!2 -
My parents know that I work with "codes" in computers to make all sort of things 😁. My siblings have some idea of what programming and software engineering is. They tell me that it is fun (they have tried it), but they still don't value it that much 😕

for a language obsessed about errors, rust sure sucks at its stacktraces so I can know what gave the error

lol every time I look at actively maintained code on GitHub
Thing is, there'll always be things I don't know. One needs to learn that. However, it's not an excuse to stop learning, so just keep learning every day and be confident in what you know -
FINALLY getting somewhere with Xataface. First time trying to build a frontend for a database, feels like every time I make a little progress I find ten more things I don't know!3

every work i'm at, every assignment i do, i have to learn how THEY do things, how THEY think about things, i can't just be doing stuff, i have to be thinking about how THEY want me to do the stuff, how THEY would do it.
... who the fuck am I? how the fuck do I do stuff and think about stuff?
how the fuck would i know?

I love JS. And then this things happen... I want to learn TypeScript so much (not really related as I don't know if it avoids this).
Btw, I ended up finding ++n works too, so in the end it was 'Question '+ ++n;7 -
Learning golang to replace Java in my arsenal, I just wish they had a nice framework for creating guis similar to JavaFX
I know bindings exist to things like qt and GTK but why cant they have a nice native ui library.1 -
Yes I know that's too many points this sprint.
I understand you have to have all the things.
No I can't move the stories out bc you gave us a hard deadline for the release. -
So I know it's possible to run a lot of things from the terminal. Does anyone run their daily driver exclusively on a terminal? Just curious.3

After I finished the university, I felt like I didn't know anything. I'm learning everyday something new in my work (I'm working 8 years as a dev), but I can't say comfortably that I'm good at programming. After work I'm going home, where I learn and practice new things and deepen my understanding of the core concepts, but again, I feel like I don't know anything. Will I ever feel that I'm a good programmer?2

Tell me if I'm wrong
I know android dev and the more I go deeper, the more i hate the way things are done. It felt like memorising something new everytime i had to get shit done. And if u stray even just a little u get a shitload of exceptions. My android devs were pretty much crying at the end of this 40hr hackathon(i was on backend).
At the end, i just don't like d way things are done, its just way too complicated and messy for my use case - hackathons and making things as a hobby.
So you could imagine when i started react native and saw all my problems fade away. I don't know what'll happen when i go deeper. But if you've had the good fortune of working with these things, do u think its a good switch? Will i face d same issues with react native as i do now? Thanks3 -
So today I thought to polish things on a former colleagues code. I noticed he wrote JavaScript inside PHP file to redirect header to another URL. I don't know what the fuck he was thinking. Why didn't he used PHP Header to redirect the URL why JavaScript?1

Some of you guys noted that I am currently working on my own Java webserver/framework. Yesterday I encountered a small problem...
My fucking API I use because I love the HttpExchange Function is fucking without NIO! So every request blocks other requests....
You guys know any API like the Sun httpserver ( I know I shouldn't have used it in the first place ) where I can do things like in an HTTPExchange?2 -
I am more of a backend guy. I just started coding in frontend too. Now I have to change some of the hardcoded things and those should be come from the backend. Yes this is the requirement.
Don't know how will I do it at this stage 🤔 -
How much minutiae about CSS do I need to know for hiring purposes?
Should I focus on grid or flex?
Should I focus on mediaquerys before css grid?
What are some things I can safely ignore while studying frontend?6 -
I know that when a deadline is present, things like cyclomatic complexity might be something that is a left aside. But I hate so much having to troubleshoot a method with 15 levels deep of nested if, try-catch, loops... Fuck!3

I am stressed out to the point that, when I am not I don't know what to do and I feel bored while I have a ton of things to get done, that I was unable to finish while stressed1

I don't know many things 100% for sure, but I do know that I won't be enrolling in a developer boot-camp - so I don't need to see any more commercials for them. I'm not the target audience. Just show me commercials for cars I can't afford. Anything but programming schools for beginners.

Until the old Dev left this team, I never had to handle any of the website end of things. Now he's gone, I've had to look through his code, and Jesus Christ I didn't know you could be hired to do things without knowing what functions are. It's just long strings of PHP includes.3

Alright I beg your pardon. Everybody here seems somehow angry :/
I don't know the way things work here so I don't think it's a good idea to blame somebody for asking a stupid question.11 -

Le Angular programmer
Me: I need to add all these fields across this 30 page (seriously) questionnaire to the dataLayer for Google Analytics...I'll see if I can loop over all the controls and get the native element so that I can do things with it.
Also me: WTF do you mean I don't have access to the native element? Damn it! What does Google say?
**terrible french accent**
A few moments later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: I don't want to have to create a directive to put on every single one of these fields. That's dumb. Not gonna do it...bad vanilla JavaScript?
**terrible french accent**
Several minutes later
**end terrible french accent**
Me: Wait...if we use this directive then the directive can handle all the things AND we can use it outside of this questionnaire. The rest of the app can send this data so that Google Analytics can know all the things
Man Google..You sure do know what I want before I know what I want...Are you spying on me too?1 -
Heroku.
I don't like setting up servers and things. I know how to (I spent 1.5 years using archlinux and I know a lot on what's going under the hood). I like the functional paradigm where the same input yields the same result. I don't like having side effects although I know they can be necessary.
I would have to create a script to handle the configuration process instead of spending hours redoing it.
That's what I love about Heroku even if it's pricey. Almost no configuration at all. Attach some addons, configure a few env variables and everything else is in the code. -

I wanted to know a few suggestions of cheap/easy microcontrollers for you to learn a bit of assembly.
Nothing fancy though, I just want to experiment with these things.14 -

So many choices for backend I'm fucking confused. Yesterday, I tried Django and i found it little similar to RoR(in generating things, db migration things).
I'm currently working in NodeJS.
I even don't know should I rant or cry.
And of course frontend is another thing same like this.....
And I'm not much experienced to differentiate them and know which is better and where it will fit.
Can anyone tell me in simple way which framework fits where?1 -
I know there will always be new things to learn... But...
How do you guys deal with that overwhelming feeling that strikes when you start to think about how many things are there to study/research/understand yet?
Do you even feel it at all?2 -
When starting primary school, my parents got me a low-spec Pentium 4 with Windows 98. I was fascinated and started learning many things in MS Office. This led to small adventure-like games in PowerPoint.
I quickly found the limits of PowerPoint and started to dive into C++ at around 10. I never made a game, but only because I experienced how unlimited the possibilities are you have when you know how to write software and this realisation kept me motivated to learn more and more things. -
Does anyone by any chance know how to pipe binary data out of Python? I digged through the first 10 pages of Google, but none of that did what I needed. I know how to pipe things between subprocesses, but not to the stdout of Python.7
-
I won't keep up with the growing expectations. Yeah, you become more experienced over time as long as you're putting the right kind of work in, but things move on so fast.
I don't want to get to the point where what I know or can do is irrelevant and my skillset lacks what employers need.3 -
Career fair was today at my college. I don’t know why but I makes me kinda happy that some things I’m learning on my own were mentioned that aren’t taught in class
Many people mentioned micro services, some talked about containers like docker, and I had a ten minute conversation just about react js. All things I’m reading and toying with on my own time since they’re not in the curriculum, but I’ve heard them mentioned often enough in articles to know I should know about them -
What are dev books would you recommend reading.?
I am already done with
97 things programmer should know.
Starting with
The pragmatic programmer.1 -
Feels good to work at a new company again, but i miss the feeling of learning new things and the challenge i dont know if im just rushing things too fast or what. I want to learn more things in a much faster pace, am i being to impatient?
Need comments about this devrant community.
Thanks1 -
So i have learn android studio course (kotlin) for the basic.I've been practicing for some things, like recyclerview, ViewModel, bottomsheet, fragment, nav view,Firebase auth, intent and some other basic stuff.right now I'm confused what to do next, if it continues I don't know what to learn next, I know there's still a lot of things to learn, it's just that I don't know what it is, I'm trying to find out what apps a beginner should make like me, but most of the suggestions are still far from my abilities, such as making a calculator. So can you give a little advice to beginners like me, thanks6

So with Christmas coming up my family asked me to make a list of the things I want, all of it adding up to a maximum of €25. Me being me I really don't know what I want other than that I would like something educational and programming related also something to learn machine learning would be nice
All help would be appreciated7 -
Just one day please. I just want to sleep in once without that dreaded phone call or alert.
I know one of my favorite things I. The world is donating my pdo back to my company but my wife isn't so happy about it. -
When I make a post... and there’s not a single +, I know one of three things:
Either I’m on to something big, no one saw it, or no one pushed +.
So - that makes me feel pretty good.5 -
Today. Today was my worst meeting. We had to meet to work on our website together. I said I couldn't make it, because I have other important things to do besides the website and we still have plenty of time to work on the damn thing. "You can't f'ing skip meetings." "I know you have other things, but you made a commitment." Right. But you can decide when to have f'ing meetings based around your schedule.1

So I have this habit of googling weird things, obvious things and random things. Over time, I've stuck to using incognito all the time because Google suggestions and targetted ads annoy me (almost) like nothing else. It's a really nice thing to know that some algorithm out there is not judging you.
On the downside, you'll have to constantly explain to people around you that you're not a porn addict. :/3 -
I'm tired of listening to interns suffering in bad positions and being unable to change things. All I can do is listen and empathize.
I just want people to enjoy working here, but there's a bad vibe tide coming. I don't know what I can do to help.4 -
Anyone ever struggle with tokenizers? I'm writing one by hand and it's frustrating mr so much, because at times I think my logic gets flawed somewhere inside a good loop and things get slipped or missed I don't know how to explain it.5

My manager's manager doesn't know I exist.
How do I make my presence known to him, after all he controls how much raises and bonuses I get.
Tried scheduling an appointment with him weeks ago that he hasn't responded to. Saw him around my cubicle today and things became awkward3 -
I am a cs student at first class. Obviously we take an algorithm lesson. However, despite we have learned all things related to OOP , we didn't even learn switch case statement not even bubble sort algorithm or anything related to the algorithms. Because of that in my free time I learn this stuff individually. I know we will learn these things in the second class but it doesn't make sense to program anything without knowing them because you need to use them. You can use standard library but that doesn't mean you don't need to know how that works.
-
My mom doesn't even know what I'm doing. She doesn't even asked much, cause she's from the old generation, and just accept the things as it is. My mom doesn't even send messages. She use phone just for calls.
My siblings didn't know that I am a dev, they never asked.
My other half? She always seeks my help on IT things. And I always explain to her bit by bit, and looks like she understand a bit or two. I just hope that she didn't bored. Oh yeah, we're not married yet. -
I am not a very experienced developer, so naturally I don't know many fundamental things. My thinking around a lot of the necessary things is that the answer should come to me according to the need. So an oversimplified example could be, say I'm solving a Dynamic programming problem, I should not need to know the algorithm beforehand I can maybe invent it. This thinking stops me learning a lot things because I feel like then when I learn a pattern I will restrict my thought process within the knowledge I have and not think beyond it. I feel like that I am doing the dumb mistake of learning things bt heart and not understanding.
Does anyone felt the same? What your experience says about this?12 -
I started reading Thinking in Java a month back on the advice of a senior dev. But it's a damn big book and most of the things feel like basics I know. Has anyone read it completely and would you recommend I read it?3
-
What do you people do if you feel like you are in rut? I mean I love programming and I love my job but currently I'm working on feature that has turned into a almost a never ending feature because of bad planning so know I feel like I'm stuck in that feature even though I'm working on side projects also but still I know I have to push and finish THAT project. Any tips/suggestions or things that you do to overcome these situations.7

I always wanted to learn web development and I choose django because I know python and everyone says it's begginer friendly. But the problem is when ever I start watching videos on youtube or read django tutorial on mozilla, I feel like I am mugging some code from the internet. It doesn't feel intresting at all.It may get the job done, but I want to understand how things work behind the scenes. I want to learn ground up.I want to know how I can understand the behind the scenes of web development?2
-
Everything.
I just want know as much as I can.
I started with Web-Development in front-end, continued with back-end and then headed over to game-development. I'm just doing things, that interest me. My next dev area probably will be application-development.
I love being student! (but I know that, when I'm older, I have to decide...) -
So I have hitman pro alert, malwarebytes, spybot anti Beacon and, shut up windows 10. Yet I feel so vulnerable using my pc, I know Linux is better, but it's a gaming/school rig. I'm also forced to use Google for school. I dunno what to do, maybe I'm just too worried. While just those stupid security nut things I guess. Lol.3
-
Too much googling.
This is a great skkll and I know it leads you to amazing links and resources, but currently i have a list of things to work upon and it has crossed a timespan of next 2 years!! -
I know this for a fact, when we touched and we sang about the lovely things. You said...
Discombobulated Tooth fairy. -
Where to start learning openGl??? I know, theres sometting like google, but I would like to hear things like good practises and stuff...3
-
Hello, I am a starter programmer. I don’t know too much about programming, just a few things. Do you know a course or any website that can help me learning to code? Thank you!11
-
I know how many people hate systemd. I started reading about it a week ago and I am enjoying it. Seems a much better alternative to previous things.
Is there something bad I should know about...2 -
So many times I've wished that I had something like a teacher or a mentor to ask all the questions I have with coding and programming. Because of this I'm slightly afraid of trying to get into a more serious project in case there are important things I should know that I haven't learned yet. Learning completely on your own is hard. :(
-
It's kinda hard if you're a beginner and don't know if you're doing things with good practice...
I would really appreciate if someone could review my code and tell me if I'm on the right track: https://github.com/Dollique/...
For Info: I'm doing this all by myself for a learning purpose and I know I could easily use a finished framework :)
Thanks!1 -
As of rn life isn’t mking any sense. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I simply don’t understand anything. It’s like there are so many things I have to do as in tasks but other than that I don’t know honestly. I don’t know where this path leads me, I don’t know what I’m doing. Tbh I don’t even know if I’m on any path. . I’ve no idea what’s gonna happen. I have never felt like this but I’m feeling this right now. And I don’t know what I’m going to do about it.
Rant’s over!2 -
The more I learn, the more easily I get triggered at little things.
Read heapq python documentation to implement a min priority queue
Intuitively wrote heapq.push and heapq.pop in my code
Got to know that it's actually heapq.heappush and heapq.heappop
TRIGGERED! -
To the Backend Ninjas out here.
Ive written rest APIs before but know I'm asking myself how I would implement user messaging for my app.?
Use Rest and poll the server?
Use websockets and keep the connection to the server?
Or is there something that I don't know?
Man I'm getting old Everyday there are thousands of new things....6 -
At work we only "develop" for Microsoft Sharepoint which consist for the most part writing small javascript based project that on their own are not exciting at all. Problem is that by doing 90% work like this i feel like i am wasting my time by not learning/working on more relevant things for a .net developer, but i have a contract for 2 more years. Except to study and do things i like at home i don't know what much to do.
🤔😑1 -
If you don't like Rust, I don't know what your problem is. I really don't have any pain points with Rust, and it's only given me good things. Rust. Is. Amazing.10
-
today I was explaining a non tech guy , how 2 mobiles communicate with each other via a server. It started of really good. Then I got to know that what I was speaking was looking like Greek to him. This made it very clear that explaining things are also a difficult job1
-
haha i get to know so much new things everytime i try web development.
Interestingly, i don't know even the basics of any framework or websites, yet i am a "JAMstack" developer (coz i use mkdocs to maintain a website and am pretty comfortable with static site generators)
how cool is that? XD -
You know the symmetry of this insanity is only possible because people do the same things mimicking the novel actions people like John boy took or reproducing things so closely that with memory fading in time basic decay model of forgetting which so far as I can tell may blur details but leave major impressions of even some of the most insignificant things people simply engage in "novel" actions like this rant.
How's it feel to be part of an oversized music box ?
Need to wander somewhere new -
I personallbery don't like OP superpowers like perfect coding or time-bending. They have to be either not OP or über OP. So here's an idea. Having control over things you understand. Depending on how much you know you're either just a normie or the most powerful being on the planet. And you still experience the joy of learning new things. AND you're getting more powerful because of it.
You can be exactly the dev you want to be.1 -
See here is how I know these are not randomly generated some of these sound like things they would say4
-
So I work with another team that develop services I use for my website.
The thing is, when they do big changes, I am not warned. So when I update my proxies, surprise, don't compile anymore, have things to change.
Worse is, I have their code right now. And the code that is deployed right now. They're not the same. So I know that I'm gonna have to change again things some days, but that's because I searched through the code. -
So I have given this small project, which should be a work of maximum a week.
But unfortunate things are happening. I couldn't work for week due to some personal things so took a week off. And now can't be productive because another thing happened.
I have been a very slow developer and it's been 4 years in industry. People with less skills are earning more.
I don't know what my colleagues or stakeholders must be thinking about me.4 -
1. Only thing where correct logic doesn't backfire at you.
2. It is a wonderful thing where you get the satisfaction of solving something, organizing things and making things look beautiful all at once.
3. Its the only thing I know how to do to make money :p -
I really need help , I need guidance and a journey map from a backend developer , I have been coding for a few months and I have learnt a few things on building APIs and now I m practicing most of what I have learnt. But don’t know what to do next or learn next , I do not know if I am on the right path? Can someone please come to my aid3
-
Man, I love having a software factory. Every day something different. Today I'm developing with Laravel, and it's an honest framework. It doesn't do anything too much or anything less. Just enough.
It's good to use things that know their place.1 -
Anyone worked with/for a company called pugpig.com? The company I work for might be partnering with them but we don’t know much about their reputation. Their website portfolio looks a bit ‘sparse’ but I’ve heard good things...
-
I know how annoying things like this can be,
but me and a couple of friends is doing a survey about CQRS vs CRUD for a bachelor theisis assignment
Its 10 questions, really short, would help a lot!
https://no.surveymonkey.com/r/...2 -
I assume most of you know the shortest joke ever : 1
but the question is : is it fun just b/c the 0 is not fun for the majority of the people and things it's put on?7 -
Apple fanboys, it's time to swallow the truth. I hope most of you know this.

In college right now, it seems that all my peers are way laid back than me and they think that I do a lot of things but I'm really confused whether to get laid back a little or continue working as I do. I know I sound confused right now but I am!3

anybody likes/loves nestjs? I don't know why but every time I look at the folder structures, it creeps the hell out of me. And the learning curve, Ughh! I don't even know how people are this patient while learning new things.
btw, any advise for me regarding nestjs?5 -
Side projects, also, when I read something interesting I make a small example using it myself to understand it, well some other things too like: attend meetups, pair programming, helping buddies with their issues (you don't have to know everything to give a hand), read blogs/books
-
Okay now I messed with my package manger and I don’t know from where things are wrong. This cli command, error. That cli command error. What the hell?
-
I don't know how to earn money when i need it so bad! I am student and know just a bit of html/css that too of basic level.
This life sucks! It's so hard to learn things.
Don't even know how to get internship with this few knowledge , Even when i start something new , i skip . Don't know how to get online projects to work on.
I am useless.13 -
While I should really actually learn C++ first among other things. I wanted to try and fuck with a really old version of DirectX (8.1) since I had a Win2k machine. I know it's old af,but Jesus how did/does anyone put up with how proprietary Microsoft's shit is.1
-
you know as crazy as people act doing the same things why would someone want a possible video recording to pilot them via peloton ?
bad enough i have to quit half my hearthstone games ! -
How do you handle a colleague who just throws his/her work at you saying that he/she is able to implememt things at his/her side in meetings. And when you ask on personal he/she says not done yet !? Things getting delayed because of that and I don't know what to do ? can you give some advice.....1
-
So I'm the position that I'm the one who's hiring new developers at the firm I work at, do you have any tips on things I should consider and look for.
In technical terms I know what we need but what about the personal things and how to get the right guy/girl?4 -
CRON JOBS SUCK. @LINUX YEAH YOU HEARD ME
MY PROGRAM WRITES INFO TO A DATABASE, SENDS EMAILS AND OUTPUT IS PIPED TO A LOG FILE. NONE OF THESE THINGS HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE CRON RUN SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS OR ISN'T WORKING.5 -
You know I remember a time when they didn't make everything .ore difficult than it needed to be because well whoever they used to be they weren't fucking retards and the country didn't organize things in terms of how stupid people were1
-
I like how classes are getting more interesting and challenging But I don’t like how I don’t have time to work on my own projects. I have plans for them and I know where and somewhat how to do things. But between classes, homework, things teachers ask me to do, TA work, and medical issues I don’t have time to do my own thing anymore so GitHub is going to show massive spots of inactivity making me seem dis-interested in things not school related
-
Hey guys, i'v been working in a company for almost 1 year as a web developer. I only know the basic data structures and algorithms even after this year and also my co workers didn't seem to know graph, trees and other algos like dijikstra and all those advanced algo types. I'm searching for a job with better salary should I have to learn all these to get paid well ? Where even I can apply these things in my job? Is it worth ?11
-
I read the whole documentation of Mongo Atlas Search and I still don't know if there is operator "greater than" for strings. I'm trying to implement my own "search_after" in the query because sort+skip is not a good idea and every time I google for a feature I end up in a forum where a PM says "Coming soon, we will prioritize this" and I know that things don't work like that1
-
Needed a ARC glass, after checkup doctor said I need glass with power.
Got my first glass, due to multiple close encounters with digital screens.
Now I only see blurry, while I could see almost clear before.
Now I don't even know how I look.
And the upside is I can see things in POV now.💰11 -
How to get good at solving problems.
My managers says that I should consider scalability, dev efforts, Operational costs etc. I am really new in this, I really need to figure out a lot of things by understanding architecture and then there are added quality parameters of the solution, where can I read all this? How to get good at this? I know one of the solution is to actually work on it, can I still get some other resources to understand things better?1 -
you know how i hate things that can't be verified without far more man hours than I have available ?
just requires you to take something on faith which may not be vital but it still requires you to take something on faith from a source you don't always trust. -
I have to work with extjs again (rant). How is this still a thing? I know you can get things done very fast (if you are already familiar with extjs). But does it scale? Can you recommend extjs for large Enterprise software? (I have to use JS (Objects) only)
