Boss: I need you to start on this new project, how long will it take?
Me: well, hard to say with no specs whatsoever...
Boss: just your best guess
Me: 4 to 6 month I guess?
Boss: so 3 months it is. When can you start?
Me: no specs, sir...and I said 4 to 6
Boss: the specs are almost ready, I know you can simplify it
Me: ...
Boss: just start with the basic infrastructure already
(4 months later)
Boss: here you are the specs, they might change a little in behaviour and design, but all the main stuff is here
(Hands me a A3 with a total of 21 pictures in InDesign)
Me: o....Kay. what happens when I click here?
Boss: oh, we should still talk about the app workflow, I'll get you updated
(2 weeks and 16 total rewrites of the "specs" later)
Boss: you told me it was a 2 months job, why aren't you finished yet? We must deploy in 3 weeks!

In my current company we're being forced to use Windows for web development... I can't use a VM because of the hardware specs.
This is now my screensaver.57 -
On a break I went into a Best Buy to browse laptops. I had no intention on buying from them because they suck, but I just wanted to touch a few and look at specs. A salesman then thought it was a smart idea to approach me. Immediately, he was talking down to me about specs and asking if I needed it for email, Facebook, Instagram, and the like. I'll be honest, I am super girlie in my appearance and mannerisms. So I get it, I suppose. The big pseudo-nerd is going to help the little girl find a cute, social media laptop. He actually walked me over to a pink HP Stream lol. Sure, I like pink, but I don't want a useless paperweight of a machine. When I mentioned I need a new rig for coding, he actually chuckled and said "really?". So I replied "yes really, you presumptuous cockbag" and walked out. Needless to say, I won't be buying there.153

Dad: What do you think about this laptop?
*looking at specs... Raising eyes. Intel i3 first gen., 2 GB RAM*
Me: Nice calculator8 -
Friend: "Why did you buy a Macbook Pro? Look at the specs, the RAM, the storage, the processor.. heck, ain't it overpriced? I wouldn't if I were you"
Me: "No, I didn't buy it. My company gave it to me when I joined them."
Friend: "Oh.. okay... hey, is there any job opening in your company?"13 -
Dev: So tell me some specs about the app you want.
Client: something like facebook.
Dev: you know facebook has too many features for even having a price tag?
Client: what? Will I pay too? I have the idea.

I was almost finished a website when the client changed their mind and decided that what they actually wanted was an app for Android and iOS because that's apparently what I promised them.
I double-checked the contract to make sure. It said I was building them a website that would be tested for mobile-friendliness on browsers from phones using Android and iOS. :/3 -
Me: ok fuck it, if the Mac mini gets refreshed I'm selling my desktop and getting one...
*Checks news and sees they got a refresh*
*Looks at cost to specs*
Me: ha... Ha... Ha... Nope...34 -
Root: Fleshes out missing data in some factories. Tests affected code and finds the change breaks some specs (but shouldn’t).
Root: Reaches out to spec author.
Root: Messages thundercunt (the ticket’s code reviewer) on slack about the specs and the reaching out. No response.
Root: Works on another ticket while blocked.
Root: Logs off.
Root: Talks with spec author chick in the morning. Decide to pair on specs later.
TC: Still no slack response.
Root: Gives update in standup. Mentions factories and broken specs. Mentions pairing with spec chick.
TC: Still no slack response.
Root: Pulled off tickets in favor of prod issue. Gets ignored by everyone else diagnosing prod issue. Investigates prod issue by herself. Discovers prod issue isn’t from bad code, but bad requirements — code works as requested. Communicates this with details. Gets ignored by people still diagnosing prod issue. Tries again. Gets ignored. Gives up. Works on non-blocked tickets instead.
TC: Still no slack response.
Hours later:
TC: Comments on PR telling me I broke specs (how did I not notice?), that I need to reach out to spec chick and work with her, and that I can’t resolve the ticket until it’s fixed and passes code review.
TC: Still no slack response. (21 hours later at this point)
TC: Logs off. Still no response (25 hours at this point)

Ignoring the prod issue for the moment…
I broke specs. No shit.
I need to talk with spec chick. No shit.
I can’t resolve the ticket. No shit!
Bitch, I told you all of this 21 fucking hours prior, and again 3 hours prior during standup. But no, I clearly “don’t communicate” and obviously have no bloody clue what I’m doing, either, so I need everything spelled out for me.
And no, I didn’t resolve the fucking ticket. Why the fuck would I if it still has pending changes? Do you even check? Ugh!
And what the fuck with that prod issue? I’m literally giving you the answer. fucking listen! Stupid cunts.
Why is it all of the women I work with are useless or freaking awful people? Don’t get me wrong, many of the men are, too, but I swear it’s every single one of the women. (Am I awful, too?)
Just. Ugh.
I can’t wait to leave this sewer of a company.
Oddly still a good day, though. Probably because I talked to recruiters and sent out my resume again.rant oh my root gets ignored. root swears oh my root talks in third person root solves a prod issue thundercunt root communicates root wants to leave root gets ignored15 -
Me: I'd like a new phone please.
Manufacturer: Okay, what do you look for in a phone?
Me: Well as long as the other specs are good, it's important to have a headphone port, SD card slot, and removable battery.
Manufacturer: Okay, fingerprint scanner. Got it.
Me: What?
Manufacturer: The only thing you want is a fingerprint scanner?
Me: No I don't care about that, what I want is-
Manufacturer: A fingerprint scanner, we know. Every device needs one.
Me: But-
Manufacturer: Shhh... Don't worry, we know our customers.29 -
Friend: I bought a new phone.
Me: nice!
Friend: It's really fast coz it has 3gb ram!!

Friend: doesn't matter! The photos are of 8mb!
Me: yeah. Best phone ever. 😑😓10 -

I was working on a website for a client and he wanted an illegal (breaking TOS) functionality and I refused to implement that part so he paid me $800 less than what he owed me. Unfortunately there was no real contract besides some emails detailing the specs and payment, and if I pushed it any further he would've charged back the money he already paid me. Basically I'm screwed :/
I guess now I know how important it is to get those contracts and detailed specs written out from the very beginning.18 -
Just spoke with another teams developer. (She's using Java)
Her: so we get a json object from your service, I want an array
Me: well that's not what you said in the specs... And it's not hard since it's just a Map
Her: what Map? It's JSonObject I need an Array
Me: give me the library your using..
Her: here...
I Google the documentation and methods and paste the link and the methods to use:
-length (she also wanted count)
-toJsonArray
This ain't JS, just use the . operator and go thru all the methods' docs... Or learn to use Google8 -
Since my one plus is gone and I can’t stand my fucking iPhone I finally bought a new phone.

On top of burnout, codebase issues, spec issues, burnout, the product butt that keeps on crapping, burnout, burnout, loathing for my employer... My local Apple SSL cert expired. )
(Note: The comments are mine.)
See the problem? No, not the ugly code (which is actually worse than what i posted here).
It’s using the same ridiculous getter (if you can call it that) that pulls a name out of the passed user object, and then expecting each row to have that name, in order. Not that order matters when they’re all the same.
Upon inspection, all objects created by the spec have the exact same name, so the above test passes (as long as there are 5 rows). It passes, but totally not because it should: those aren’t the objects that are actually in the table. All of the specs — all 22 of them — only check for that shared name on various rows, and no other data. And it’s not like this is the only issue, either.
Fuck me these are bad.
And this guy is a senior dev earning significantly more than me. Jesus what the fuck Christ.18 -
I got a used computer case in a second hand hardware store and it still has the sticker with the specs of the computer they wanted to sell it with on it. It was going to be a moderate to shity pc. I built an absolute computing monster in it (i7 6900k, 32GB ram, 23TB storage). I like having visitors over and telling them this is the primary computer I use to do my high particle count fluid simulations and little bigdata projects with.6

No matter how much product owners claim "bugs have priority over anything else", "we value high quality structured code", and "we do test driven development"...
...Once a big client wants a feature to be developed before they sign up, dirty code will be written from napkin specs, and that code will always be refractored "soon".4 -
I'm done with f/e. I so fucking hate it .
I fucking hate implementing weird highly animated websites designed by gurus
I fucking hate making them accessible.
I hate working on weird code generated by my coworkers and jump on projects with 0 specs.
I fucking hate this whole bloatware called javascript.
I fucking hate morons who think they know it all.
I'm fucking disgusted by the job market with their whole job specs ( Oh you don't have 5 year experience in some fucking stupid library I don't give a flying fuck. Too bad, we can't hire you )
And most importantly I fucking hate the day I chose f/e development instead of smth else.
Now at 29 I'm fucking stuck with this shit with no energy and patience to learn something else or at least jump on b/e or anything that is not related to web dev or js.
Sorry for so many fuckings but I had a breakdown.
Love ya.25 -
My dad's old MS-DOS computer (can't remember specs) when I was 5 or 6 years old. This got me into gaming. I always had to ask him to execute the games I wanted to play cause I didn't know how to do it. One of the first games I ever played was Wolfenstein 3D. Was so scary I didn't want to exit the first room :D4

Web Development on a single laptop is tough....
Window 1: editor, tabs for markup, styles, server, terminal
Window 2: browser...so small that everything is in low res mode, if not mobile.
Window 3: database, stress testing system and making sure data flows properly.
Window 4: design specs.

PO: Here's a small cool feature I thought of, should be easy enough *shows very basic draft spec*
Me: Cool, how does it work for logged out users? What about customers in Spain? Does it work with US sales tax? Do we need to update the privacy policy? Do we have translations? What's the fallback if it breaks? Who will be maintaining the content?
PO: ...
PO: I'll get back to you
*never hears about feature again*4 -
Why write any specs anymore? The juniors don't read them, nor do the product managers. I'm just talking to myself at this point.
So, I waste time writing these nice detailed tickets, then when I go to review the pull request, the whole pile of horseshit is half done, and when I ask the product managers for resolutions, they don't have a clue either.
So just give me the whole fucking app, I'll do the whole damn thing myself. See you on Mars in 2025 while you and your pleb asses serve me fries and burgers.1 -
The code is a freaking mess. Shared behavior, terrible variable/method naming, misleading module naming, dynamic polymorphic spaghetti, whitespace errors, no consistency, confusing even if you understand what the code is doing, ... . It should never have passed code review. It probably wasn't code reviewed.
The comments are sparse and useless. Quality level: // This is bridge.
The documentation does not exist.
Testing steps for QA are missing several steps, including setup, so actually using the feature is bloody challenging. If one thing is wrong, the feature just doesn't show up (and ofc won't tell you why).
The specs for the feature are outdated and cover only 4 of 19+ cases. And are neigh useless for those 4.
The specs for the report I'm fixing don't even check the data on the report; it just checks for one bit of data on each row it creates -- a name -- which is also the same on each row. gg.
The object factories (for specs) are a mess, and often create objects indirectly, or in backwards order with odd post-create overwriting to make things work. Following the factories is a major chore, let alone fixing or extending them.
The new type has practically zero test coverage.
The factory for the new type also only creates one variant -- and does so incorrectly.
And to top it all off: the guy who wrote the feature barely ever responds. If he does, he uses fewer words than my bird knows, then stops responding. I've yet to get a useful answer out of him. (and he apparently communicates just fine, according to my micromanager.)
But "it's just fixing a report; it'll be easy!"
Oh, fuck off.8 -
Reject original specs. Do the bare minimum MVP that works and solves problems people actually have, and not problems you think people have.
Improve it if needed.
In my experience, software projects don’t live long enough to outgrow the MVP. If they do, it happens way down the road. At that point, business will change, and the original spec will become irrelevant.
It’s a paradox: 90% of the spec was discarded, but the business is happier than if we followed the spec word by word.
Also, static typing and unit testing solve nothing. I’m sorry.24 -

Hey Root, we have a high priority ticket for you! It's adding some columns to a report. Should be simple. Details are in the ticket.
First: reports are some of the most boring, drool-inducing drudgery i have ever worked on.
Second: Specs for these reports are a nightmare since everything is ... very indirectly tested, and the specs are everywhere but where you'd expect them to be, so it's a lot of spelunking and trial/error. It's also slow as beans.
Anyway. The ticket's details are in ... not the worst engrish i've ever seen, but it's bad enough that i have no idea what they're asking despite (thus far) five attempts at deciphering it. There's also a numbered list of "fields" to add, so you'd think it would be straightforward. It is not. Half the list is crossed out, and half of the remaining items are feature requests (in yet more engrish), not columns to add. Also, one of the actual fields is impossible as the data it's asking for is not recorded anywhere.
yeah...
I cringe every time I see this person's name as the reporter because it's always the same. and honestly, there are more of these engrish people every month, and believe me: it isn't just a language barrier...3 -
Common lies told by developers?
Here's one of mine: "It works on my screen".
I then proceed to ask them their specs while I think of the solution.6 -
At first I got excited about the new MacBook Air specs. Then I saw the price... It's a fucking joke to spend so much money for this trash ass hardware you get for it. I mean 1400€ for dual core 8gb ram 128gb ssd?!?!?!

Woke up this morning with a fuck this shit mood. I need to write test specs for a system I don't know shit about, and it seems no one who work with this system wants to talk to me, so I gave up and started devranting and reading a game dev book. Fuck this shitty job.2

So I got an e-mail from a recruiter (a.k.a. recruiter spam) today looking for a candidate with four "essential skills" and my head almost exploded when I read what they were. I have regained my composure just enough to be able to write this rant, but I'm still not myself. I recommend sitting down for this. Are you ready?
The four "essential skills" were:
Java, Jenkins, Eclipse, IntelliJ
I don't know where to begin. Motherfucker, where do you get off telling me which IDE to use? Oh wait, you didn't, you expected me to be an "expert" with two completely different ones, you numb nuts. Why the fuck would I be? I swear to fuck these idiots would probably screen out the best programmer in the world because s/he uses VI/emacs/Atom/Sublime/fucking-Notepad.
I can hear them saying "oh, you don't know IntelliJ? Sorry, we need an expert in that."
Fuck off you filthy cunt! No, sorry, I take that back, I shouldn't be mean to the mentally disabled.
Also, Jenkins? Really? Any developer can pick up how to use Jenkins to its full effect in a matter of hours, or a couple of days at most.
Why do companies hire these jackasses to do a job as important as recruitment? Why do they write job specs that are so incredibly stupid? I almost replied to express interest so I could go to the interview and throw a bucket of red paint on them (because they're making me bleed inside).
Where's the Tylenol?5 -
Client asks for a *simple* form in his page. I do the job. He likes it. But turns out what he really wants is a tool to create forms, with editable questions-answers and A/B testing capabilities. FUCK!9
-
Client's API returns a very weird response that changes its structure depending on its content.
When a array field has more than 1 children it returns:
{
"field" : [
{ "name1" : "value1"},
{ "name2" : "value2"}
]
}
So far so good. However, the fuckery happens when it has 1 children:
{
"field" : { "name1" : "value1"}
}
WTF! So the client API can return either a JSON object or an array and we cant trust the specs they gave us.4 -
Teacher gave us the wrong specs for a project we had to do on 3 years, learned it 4 weeks before the final test ...8

!rant but history
I found this old micro controller: The TMS 1000 (from 1974). The specs: 100-400kHz clock speed, 4-bit architecture, 1kB ROM and 32 bytes (!) RAM. According to data sheet, you sent the program to TI and they gave you a programmed controller back - updates to the once upload program were impossible, but an external memory chip was possible.
I'm glad we have computers with more processing power and storage (and other languages than assembler) - on the other hand it enforced good debugging before deployment and and efficient code.
Data sheet: http://bitsavers.org/components/ti/...6 -
Client:
This has to be done with in 160 hours.
Me:
Seems doable
After maybe 100 hours of developing:
Client:
This is great and all but we decided to change the specs little (a lot) surely you can code this whole thing again in the rest of the time.10 -
When your specs simply won't run new code no matter what you do, non-conditioned (and unmodified) calls don't get called, and 2+2 somehow equals Q, you know it's time to give up and restart the simulation by going to bed.
Except it's early afternoon and the project deadline is tonight. 😔
Back to debugging reality.11 -
Yes yes yes
Let's spend countless hours writing painful spaghetti that generates a financial report, extend that spaghetti for specs, then not bother to check the amounts or status. or where it says the money went. Nope, checking non-unique names is totally good enough. We're so good at this. Ten points to the legendaries.
Let's also make the object factories not create the objects correctly, and make sure that report includes entries for orders that don't include any actual payments. Oh, their status? "Ready to send" of course! Let's send that totally valid $0.00 to nobody!
Oh, but Root. Root, root, root. You can't ADD payments to this. no no no. if you do, it'll break specs everywhere else that uses that factory! Shame on you for suggesting it.
Pssh, now you want to make a payment just for this report? Why would you do that? Our best devs have been working on this for years! What could you possibly know that they don't? No, they're perfect. Don't touch them. Just make them better, okay? No take, only throw!5 -
Fuck yeah!!! After over a month of being stuck without a phone, the funds have finally been released to buy a new one. It'll be the OnePlus 6T. Kernel source available on launch, wicked specs that rival PC's - 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, a quarter TB of storage... Fuck yeah!!!! Never settle indeed!!! :D5

It took me almost the entire day just to outline the specs I need to write for the feature I just finished. Writing them next week is going to be arduous. Ugh.2

I work with junior developers, guiding them and teaching them on a daily basis.. my biggest pet peeve?
When they finish typing code and without testing it ask: "Is this right?"
HOW THE FUCK DO I KNOW? Seriously! I don't know what all your specs are, maybe try running it before asking??

I’m debugging some intermittently failing specs.
The problem is, they only fail when RUNNING THE ENTIRE FUCKING FILE, which, naturally, takes TEN FUCKING YEARS.
And it’s not like they fail when they get run first. No. They only fail when run near the end.
ASDFHSGSKSHDHDKAJDKF17 -
Testing hell.
I'm working on a ticket that touches a lot of areas of the codebase, and impacts everything that creates a ... really common kind of object.
This means changes throughout the codebase and lots of failing specs. Ofc sometimes the code needs changing, and sometimes the specs do. it's tedious.
What makes this incredibly challenging is that different specs fail depend on how i run them. If I use Jenkins, i'm currently at 160 failing tests. If I run the same specs from the terminal, Iget 132. If I run them from RubyMine... well, I can't run them all at once because RubyMine sucks, but I'm guessing it's around 90 failures based on spot-checking some of the files.
But seriously, how can I determine what "fixed" even means if the issues arbitrarily pass or fail in different environments? I don't even know how cli and rubymine *can* differ, if I'm being honest.
I asked my boss about this and he said he's never seen the issue in the ten years he's worked there. so now i'm doubly confused.
Update: I used a copy of his db (the same one Jenkins is using), and now rspec reports 137 failures from the terminal, and a similar ~90 (again, a guess) from rubymine based on more spot-checking. I am so confused. The db dump has the same structure, and rspec clears the actual data between tests, so wtf is even going on? Maybe the encoding differs? but the failing specs are mostly testing logic?
none of this makes any sense.
i'm so confused.
It feels like i'm being asked to build a machine when the laws of physics change with locality. I can make it work here just fine, but it misbehaves a little at my neighbor's house, and outright explodes at the testing ground.4 -
Why the hell does the client keeps changing the bloody specs? Do they think that they've bought us with their money?

XIAOMI providing almost 90% of the specs of APPLE for half price, shouldn't we go for XIAOMI instead of APPLE....?20 -

Desks seem to be a thing, currently. This is my desk. There are many like it, but this is mine.
The setup is a little dated, but I love it, and when remote working, I've to use the company laptop anyway.
Specs:
Intel Xeon 4x3.3GHz
16gb DDR3
geforce gtx 680
SAMSUNG evo SSD+some HDDs
3 dell ips displays with display port
And my beloved g15 & g70012 -

Additions: i3 gaps/polybar , getting deepin to play with, mpd+ncmpcpp, gonna get cava.
Don't know all of the specs yet,

also worth mentioning that gnome plays well with toutchscreen 😎

When project is finished, everything is according specs, and on final review the client says: "everything looks nice! But I would like to change just a few small details. I would like a different design and functionality".
Seriously?!1 -
Fifteen minutes of coding
Fifteen minutes of specs
Five minutes of debugging
Two minutes of specs (just failures)
Thirty seconds of tweaking
Two minutes of specs
Ten seconds of tweaking
Two minutes of specs
Realize I made a typo due to RubyMine input lag
Two minutes of specs
Ten seconds of fixing and tweaking
Two minutes of specs
And so it goes.
All. day. long.
Sometimes it repeats.
That’s sort of nice.
Is it any wonder I can’t focus?5 -
QA: “not accepted since text differs from specs.”
Me: “but... the text comes from specs, I copy pasted it yesterday, wtf?”
*checking specs versioning*
Specs updated 1 hour ago
Having to input text from jira to the language strings cause design’s too lazy to do it themselves is stupid enough, but the good old “specs changed after the feature is done” gig is a must... to remember you why you hate working for someone.13 -
What a shitty day.
3h sleep
Lead very pissed bcuz backend don't know specs
Boring meeting where everything is repeated like 6 times
In a few hours boss wants to talk with the whole team
My co-workers jokingly say they want to fire me.
I should be the "hero that will make things better"
Please just kill me instead...
Edit: started working there 3 weeks ago2 -
Recently i had a small talk with someone working in the banking sector . When that person acknowledged what i do for a living , she started to be a little bit passive-agressive .
Her:"You know someday , sooner than later , a guy like you is going to create something like artificial intelligence to replace all the devs in the world . Ha ha ha ! And your golden age is going to end . "
Me:"So you think this guy is going to create a smart program , software or platform , that will create software from what ? "
Her:" We will write the specs directly in the program and we will get the software after !"
Me:"And what if the specs are impossible, from logical point of view. "
Her:" Well there will be some rules and you will need to respect them !"
Me: "And people need to learn the logic of these rules?"
Her: " Yes a little bit of training!"
Me:" We already have that !"
Her: " We have ?! "
Me: " Is called .... CODING !"
Her: **silence **
(I remembered the burn from a comic -- forgot the name-- but GOD it felt good !)
Why some people hate us ?4 -
You know what I don't like?
Getting dropped into an ongoing project, especially as a replacement for somebody else - looking through the code and realising the code is perfectly fine - except I would do it differently.
Yes, I see why those choices were made. It's up to specs and according to the convention - but it still _feels_ wrong.2 -

Not entirely dev related, but...
I'm getting tired of (electrical, mechanical) engineers complaining about HW limitations like "oh this board only has 12 KB of flash memory" or "I can't make this thing move smoother because my CPU is only 16 MHz" Bitch, you can spend $500 on 3 servo motors, but you can't afford to pay extra $5 to get a board with better specs to control them?7 -
Sales was about to close what I thought was supposed to be a basic WordPress project with a pretty steep delivery time (two weeks). I thought to myself: "well, ok. It's going to be rough for us to fit it into our existing schedule, but I guess the budget (unusually high) compensates." After I say OK, I find out that they were actually about to sign a FE application that takes data from various document management applications. I lost my shit. I hope there's a special place in hell for sales reps that don't get the specs before accepting projects.2

*get task assigned to me*

Me: "Why is this getting completely changed? It meets the specs you sent."
PM: "Well, they took a while to approve the concept so I assumed it would be the same as the one on their current site. But now they want something different. Just change it."
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME. WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THE POINT OF SENDING FOR APPROVAL IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO WAIT FOR THE APPROVAL?!2 -
Was working on a client's project. He had given clear specs. Work went delightful with less or no hacks. Then I get asked to add a extra feature which I had little thought about. Now I think it's a small hack and can be done. But here I am. One hack leading to another. I am too deep into ugly hacks. Maybe I should stop software development and join postal service to sort letters. I feel so incompetent.4

Client: "documentation, oh you mean those grey texts the previous code guy wrote on the code files"
Me: I kinda need more than "grey texts on the code files" if you want me to actually fix the system and implement the new specs.

Me: It's a Laravel system sir, it's php not asp.net
Client: what are those?

Web development is the worst!
I still cannot understand why it is not possible for browsers to correctly support all official specs... Exceptions here and there, dirty fix for this one, add a little margin here, hide this...
The daily struggle never stops.

Oops, looks like "Benedict Cumberbatch" just broke your unrealistic design specs and spotlights your non-inclusive cognitive bias, designer. Maybe stop using "John Smith" as mock design data for users' names and design things for real people.
Developers should not be paying down your design debts. Fix this!

dev: “I want to start working on [feature]”
Me: “I already started to work on it, sorry for not mentioning it, we need specs from design team before I can go on, but I’d suggest going for another task meanwhile”
Manager: “noooo design is very very busy, [dev] will take care of it.”
Me: “[dev] still needs specs from the design team... and I am half done with it so no real point in re-writing the same code I wrote”
Manager: “just trust me, we do this and [dev] takes care of it.”

The Eve V is a Community Developed Windows Tablet which will be released in Ocotober this year.
The best specs you can get is i7 6th Gen, 16 GB Ram and 500 GB SSD for around 1400$.
He wants 32 GB RAM in such a slim and small Tablet. Also wants a 7th Gen Intel CPU and 1 TB SSD in it. He's ready to pay 1000 $ more for his special edition.
The Eve V is already finished with tooling and they are wating for the screens to arrive. They already have all the other parts.
Dude you're crazy and that specs just for VM's? What are you running? 10x WinShitBox?
He's insulting everyone on the forum with a different opinion and says, retooling will be such easy.
That guy is a real douchebag and doesn't know shit. If you would build in different parts like this, you would need to remodel the whole tablet. You can stick your 1000$ in your ass, retooling would cost more than 10'000$
If it's so easy you shithead, then do it yourself and dont say it's possible and say to other people they should do! 😂😂2 -
Spent 12 hours getting deep into a heavy new feature for a client based on Google Drive integration.
Find out at the code review the next day that the specs i was given were totally wrong and all Google Drive integration is being dropped.1 -
Damn, this delicate 15.6" piece of plastic I call my laptop is the reason I have to tolerate stupid curious college-mates. Whenever I open it, everyone is like woah dude, you are a coder! does it have porn ? or games ?
yeah mann fuck you . its 2018 , I don't play pc games and I can watch porn online . can you fucktards just leave me alone and let me work ?
Why don't we have cheap laptops with good specs but smaller screens? like 7" or 9"

Ok guys, since what Im using is a laptop with some low specs since Im too broke to even afford a new FM2+ motherboard to repair my desktop pc and have a little more raw power to use and make more fancy stuff, I wish to know if anyone here legit is interested in some Original content images that Im thinking in make just out of spite in the Zerg Rush of users spaming about F. Quantum and if its worth my already highly limited time just to get hopefully more ++ than my last AMD OC that pretty much noone cared about6

Just a thought.
If your project has good coverage with tests, it should be possible to develop an algorithm that recreates your production code entirely from tests.
Just look at IntelliJ - its autosuggestions on missing properties/methods are 99% times correct - I only need to hit that ENTER button. Add some AI to recreate some algorithms and there you go - you can use your tests as both: code specs and a part of QA.
Any takers for the next AI project? :)4 -
It’s late, and stupid RSpec has decided to only mock calls to a particular method in some specs but not in others.
`allow(object).to receive(:method).with(resource_arg).and_return(“some\ntext”)`
Works in a few specs, but not the rest. Why? Who the fuck knows. Probably some shared state between specs that isn’t supposed to happen.
HAHA JUST KIDDING
After refactoring my specs to use unique ‘resource’ names for each call because I’ve had shared state issues before.
and after refactoring my model code to remove a lot of now-unused dependency injection (because maybe it was mocking a different object than got passed in?)
Guess what?
When creating my mock objects, I forgot to link them together. That’s it. A 14-character change. And suddenly they all pass.
Asdjklfajg.

My boss: Write unit tests for this angular app
Also my boss: what do you mean it will take months to write the necessary mocks for our 177 specs
Also also my boss: why would you need to mock anything for a unit test
Also also also my boss: Just let each component import all the other real components, nevermind that that's an integration test and not a unit test8 -
How come a Mac Mini with 4GB of RAM is MUCH MUCH faster than an iMac with 8GB of RAM!
When the rest of the specs are identical ...9 -
So we work on a Vmware network. And besides the terrible network lag. The specs of that VM is one core (Possibly one thread of a xeon core) and 3 GB RAM.
What do we do on it?
Develop heavy ass java GUI applications on eclipse. It lags in every fucking task. Can't even use latest versions of browsers because the VM is a fucking snail ass piece of shit!
So, in the team meeting I proposed to my manager, Hey our productivity is down because of this POS VM. Please raise the specs!.
He said mere words won't help. He needs proof.
Oh, you need proof ? Sure. I coded up a script that all of my team ran for a week. That generates a CSV with CPU usage, mem left, time - every 10 min. I use this data to show some motherfucking Graphs because apparently all they understand is graphs and shit.
So there you go. Have your proof! Now give me the specs I need to fucking work!3 -
Worst Hackathon experience:
Taking an API built by a junior dev team with minimal specs and "hacking for two pointless days" to make it work in production...
The whole Hackathon idea was an experiment to see if they could make the dev team stay late if they bought pizza and said "have fun".
We all spent 2 days cursing at the shoddy tools and lamenting that you can't run a Hackathon with a single directive and "production ready goal" yet remove any choice the developers have to actually contribute.1 -
You are a developer and you will only log time you're actually working. This means you will not be logging time spent in meetings, chasing for specs, requirement clarifications and similar. You must log 8 hours each day.
^^-- wtf?!? Is anyone else working in similar conditions?12 -
Well, I just wasted £250. I needed a Mac to build iOS apps so I got the newest Mac Mini with lowest specs (I’m still a student). I thought that 4GB would be enough as my laptop runs fine with 4 but NOPE.
ITS SUPER SLOW, XCode takes >10 minutes to even launch and RAM is always at max, I even had to get the Mac Mini without upgradable ram.
I worked all summer just to get a Mac which is sluggish, :/.7 -
Management wants me to continue building an internal-use dashboard.
and you've guessed it, all functionality to be added will be discussed on-the-fly (so specs keep changing all the time...)...
So now I'm on a strike for this project until I get clear specs -
I want to light this project on fire and walk away. Nothing is making any bloody sense.
According to specs, It’s updating a google wallet object via api, but isn’t generating the data to send along, despite every possible code path hitting that first. It also apparently isn’t calling any of the methods along the way. Obviously this is false, but that’s what the specs are reporting.
It’s also updating the object when nothing has changed. That might be, but shouldn’t, because I can see it calling the `should_update?` method which returns false, and it nopes out after that. so wth.
I’m so ready to never see this craziness ever again.

I'm soon going to be crossing the path into the world of Linux with my first install.
So here's my device specs:
Toshiba Satellite L755-S5256
RAM: 4GB
CPU: i3-2310 (2.1ghz)
I use the device to stream movies and TV onto my TV (through HDMI cord) since the TV can't connect to the internet.
Any suggestions for a simple and light weight distro I could use? Thanks everyone in advance!10 -
Why the fuck do i need to propose try-catch to an contractor, so he can fix his application, because its crashing if the input is non-conform to the specs?
Oh and before you ask. The application is a application that processes and sanitizes invoices.8 -
Does anyone else think that phone manufacturers are scamming us with higher specs like 6Gigs of RAM and 16 MP Camera..? Most of us dont even use those 3 GB .. let alone 6..18

Just did something hackerman-ish! 😎
Since a lot of new iPhones are out after the XR, Apple "removed" the page for iPhone XR and redirect to the /specs page. I tried adding /index.html to the url and tada! :D hahah "I'm in!"
Any other ways I could've gotten to this page? I was going to try the sitemap and the web archive.3 -

every new smartphone these days seems to be like one of those scify movie aliens with weird eyes (dual camera lenses) .
I mean, pixel phones clearly shows that having a top-notch software for single camera is already at par with dual cam setups .
And yet huawei is slaying them all .
New huawei flagship phone : awesome specs , ai beautify , blah blah lens , blah blah block chain 16 mp AND "2MP " dual camera setup .
they are like yeah surely we give them dual cameras, but why bother because no one will read after the word "DUAL"
xD10 -
I like helping out on weird little projects that keep my brain fed. One of our IT guys needs a little form that can auto inject some info from a small data store (Google sheets). There's a few caveats within his specs. All can be done with some js relatively easily.
But because I said it can be done he thinks it'll take 10mins and now suddenly he's putting pressure on me to do it, despite me also having an actual job to do! So frustrating!2 -
... I really truly hate with a passion..
when you've agreed on one solution and when it's done, but not approved and deployed..
suddenly decides "oh it needs, x-y-z that I said it won't need"..
Mind you, that x-y-z things mean rewriting a lot of it...
Oh well, at least I get paid for the extra hours to be spent.1 -
are there some graphic designers here? 😎
Do you code?
Did you learn some stuff here on devRant? What did you learn?
What do you design mostly?
How do you deal with programmers who don't obey your design specs because they're lazzy fucks? muhaha 😆
how do you think this profession will evolve in the next 10 years?
and you devs, what do you think of us? what are your experiences with designers? good and bad ones?8 -
1 - I wish clients would make better specs
2 - I wish I was better at asking for specs
3 - I wish I was better at sticking to the specs1 -
Just got access to OpenAI beta. This thing is seriously impressive. The attached image shows it summarizing a paragraph from Friedrich Nietzsche. Apart from that, I have tried summarizing a complex Math Algo which I found on Wikipedia, getting specs for building a new PC, and also improving my Startup Idea. The results were astonishing. I can't imagine what possibilities it can have in the future.
At the same time, I can clearly see why they are not allowing open access to their APIs. The potential for abuse is so high here. Especially when most of our population is full of digital idiots. -

I mean, she admitted that she made faulty specs but it still doesn't make it any less irritating and annoying and disrupting to my autistic brain. >:C4 -
More adventures in fixing specs.
This particular failing spec is in an included spec helper; I cannot run the spec itself because rubymine is stupid and doesn't know how. Not kidding. I also don't know the codepath it's actually testing because it's fucking convoluted, so I need (rather: want) a debugger to progress. I put breakpoints everywhere I thought it could be, and... nothing.
The stacktrace shows the calling spec in the helper module, a generic `process` method that just calls `super` (from where? who knows!), and a `wrap_every_action` in the ApplicationController. in other words: absolutely nothing helpful. I stepped through the code for most of an hour and didn't get anywhere; just saw lots of rails internals.
ugh,
I'm going to keep bashing my head against this, but what the fuck, why can't you give me something goddamn useful!?4 -
I hate dependencies... I'm stuck on a project because I need to wait for some one else to provide specs and access to their API.... And well I was also given a deadline...
-
Generally devs who are too arrogant to accept help or constructive criticism. There’s this data visualisation library that missed a specific feature that psychologists use quite frequently, so I added it myself and opened a PR. The maintainer closed it because people should use whatever he’d already implemented. It’s like not giving someone the option to listen to disco because rock music is better. Yeah, cool story bro. Now all my visualisation projects depend on my fork instead. Same with the now abandoned Material Design Library devs. They didn’t have a drop down with free input, so I opened a PR with my solution. Closed as it was out of scope, simply because Google didn’t specifically include that in the Material specs, only an input and a drop down separately which my solution matched. I also opened a PR for an obviously missing feature (being able to validate forms via JS), closed as this behaviour wasn’t in the Material specs either. No wonder MDL died before it was ever finished.4

I only want a phone I can put in my pocket and a laptop I can carry around in my bag. Slimmer than that and it's just unnecessary. I prefer my devices durable and packing some nice specs. Also headphone jacks are a plus 😆

No I don't know the specs for the project, why I hear you ask? Because instead of a bloody quote and planning this project was planned in a fucking email chain...2

Noo, it doesn't have to be responsive, that's not in the specs we agreed on. It just has to look&work perfe<khmm> decent on any phone and tablet.

I want a want Desktop and a decent gfx card for video processing/ml/etc, not for gaming and also a good CPU.
I'm kinda leaning for an i7 but the specs r like 4ghz, my current laptop is 2ghz I think. Old.
I can't decide which to buy and if Ryzen is good enough or which GTX card. I don't think I need to have 1080?

Revenge of the developer.
After our project consultants aren't good at planning projects I started my revenge. They will get soon a heart attack or paranoia...
Every time I need something from them (cause they missed it in the specs) and see them at the end of the floor. I stealth in their room and stand behind their door. When they are sitting, the door is closing mystically and I step to them. The faces are hilarious. That's my way to teach them to write better Specs :) -
This appears to be a service designed for idiots. $89 a month for ho-hum specs. What strikes me more though is that with CentOS selected, it still gives me MSSQL options. Learn to js, n00bs!7

I came across this website: https://webdock.io/en
I really like their prices in return for the specs, but they use Let's Encrypt :\
Not sure how good is Let's Encrypt when handing over payment info and not sure if I should be trusting them anyways.
Anyone tried them?9 -
When do you see/perceive-that a Dev transit from junior to senior?
I'm an undergrad, working, by now, for 9 months in companies meanwhile studying, I have found that I didn't really had any difficult time dealing with the requirements/specs in the working environment, I always found myself being able to adapt to the problem and deal with it, and by this way of doing I can hardly see myself as a junior. What do you think about? (Excuse me for any mistake, I'm drink)2 -
The new devRant avatar feature is so cool and there are so many ideas for customization being posted. Maybe at some point our dev community can build and submit custom devRant avatar objects according to devRant specs. I might even try to build a Bernoulli box 😀
Thoughts?1 -
Don't you just love it when a client turns around at this time of year and tells you that there is a new project and it's due by the middle of January!
And then they tell you the specs... Wait... What? How? Ummm... So you want a test app that is basically a fully working product that would take months to build ready in 15-20 days.
I'd rather drag my balls along sandpaper and dip them in vinegar...2 -
I'm trapped in a sea of one line work requests. How fucking difficult is it to actually write down your requirements. If you can't be arsed, even after I have asked for clarifications several times, don't act all upset when what I implement doesn't match your expectations.

I'm used to do load tests in Visual Studio where it gives which line is exactly your bottleneck. But now I'm using VS Code (visual studio requires enterprise license for load tests :\ no longer have one)
Anyways long story short, what are the best practices for load tests? For me what I'm testing is how much can a given hardware specs handle and when test fails I go back and check if code can be optimized, is this the correct way to do this?7 -

I built my first web server literally from scratch (standard socket lib) today! In Python <3.
It is able to execute php and get the stdout to use it in the Python script afterwards and make use of parallel connections.
Now to the real rant...
I am using HTTP/1.1. I want to use h2 (aka HTTP/2) tho. I am stuck on this. Found the papers to the specs of the h2 and spdy protocols, but they are not really helpful.
Is anyone good in this field? Please let me know :/3 -
Working on migrating my stuff from DigitalOcean to Contabo. Did a little test drive over the weekend and was very happy with the service. Most of all, I was very happy with the price: paying around a 4th of what I paid to DO to get the same specs ^^6

Instead they gave me a brand new computer with awesome specs and a mid-top tier graphics card, so now all I want to do is play games.
Productivity may drop...2 -
Context: large project moves to touch friendly UI, request and initial specs late last year, specs initial mockups early this year, designer promises final design before end of Q1.
Two sprints into development no fucking design, meeting today about it, designer has no fucking clue about what we actually agreed to last time. Promises again to have it for next time.
What the actual fuck? How difficult it is to least read up the fucking notes and do your fucking job that you are being paid for? Had a half fucking year!
After meeting...
Me: why do we even keep him around?
Pm: he is really overbooked...
Me: my balls are overbooked, don't promise if you can't deliver! (Leaves meeting room)
Fairly confident that this is the last project with this guy...
Am I the only one who just hates working with designers?2 -
I am lying down on the floor because I cannot figure out why this specs pass locally but repeatedly fail on the ci/cd pipeline. Literally done everything now I just want to lie here and sleep.3

I'm covering for a colleague who has 2 weeks of vacation. Everything is made with Drupal 7, and it's a backend + frontend chimera with no head and 50 anuses.
So, last monday i get told i have to show a value based on the formula:
value * (rate1 - rate2) / 2
On thursday, every calculation in that page is suddenly wrong and I get balmed for it. Turns out, now it has to be:
value * (rate1 - rate2) / rate1 / 2
Today, I get told again the calculations are wrong. "It has to be wrong, the amount changes when rate1 changes!". There'll be a meeting later today to discuss such behaviour.
All these communications happened via e-mail, so I'm quite sure it's not my fault... But, SERIOUSLY! Do they think programmers' time is worthless? Now I'll have to waste at least 1 hour in a useless meeting because they cba to THINK before giving out specs?!
Goddammit. Nice monday.2 -
I've been given a huge stack of paper, some users stories and loose specs. Was tasked with engineering the specific requirements, then the models and finally the database. Then I need to build an API on top of that.
Stuff I'll use is Go and Postgresql. Small issue is, I've never done DBs, so I've no idea what to do or where to start.
Does anyone have any resources to help kick-start myself in this field? I've been reading on SQL, but that doesn't really tell me anything about data structures and how to transform those user stories into product requirements.6 -
Fr-Agile
Francium Agile Methodology is characterized by lack of proper planning, and constant interruption during the development process as specs are pulled out of product owners asses ad nauseam. Fr-Agile methodology is known to result in an extremely radioactive team environment.1 -
Linux Mint MATE, Lubuntu or something else for this old PC?

Past week our Neural Network professor told us after the lecture that the colllege is taking steps for investing in Nvidia Digits DevBox. At first i didnt knw what it is. I googled it and came to knw that it is a fucking beast! Those specs man!!!
Its nice to see that your institute is taking steps to bring latest technology for students.8 -
Opened up my laptop to install faster wifi card with macOS support and it turns out that I have m.2 type connection ready for ssd.
These fucking idiots in Toshiba have never said anywhere in this laptop’s specs that it supports m.2.
I bought 128gb ssd and installed it.
Fast af boie and no problems booting from it.2 -
Hey everyone!
I am looking for a decent VPS provider with adequete privacy settings, but most importantly, u guys like and is cheap.
I looked at hetzner (but it rejected my id proof for some reason) and contabo (but it has a one time setup fee which i am reluctant to pay, but will pay if there r no other options).
I'll probably go with the cheapest plan depending on specs.
Budget is $5 😅
thanks ❤️❤️23 -
I already built a compiler and an interpreter.
ONLY ON THE THIRD TRY I realize that the hard part is the language design. lets hope Gerlang3.0 will turn out usable lol

testing feature: that is not what the specs say this how this is suppose to work. so, I write a bug report.
conversation with developer goes as follows
developer: this is not a bug. sends the bug report back.
me: the specs say it is a bug. I resubmit the bug.
developer: sends it back saying that it has been changed in the new specs.
me: how do I get the new specs?
developer: it is on the server, go ask your boss on where ecaxtally on the server they are. then, he closes the bug report.1 -
Oh my....I thought I was doing a very inteligent thing when I bought my Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime. Comming from an iPhone 5S. This was a cheaper phone with twice the batery power!
I was feeling it you know? This is the thing!
One year later....dang it! They forgot about the phone?
Great specs. No updates by Xiaomi.
Not even a rant just...sad disapointment!
Late December they said.... Nothing...
Damn!11 -
Job offer that just popped in my inbox: "backend developer with strong frontend skills" :/ I wonder this company
1) saves way too much money hiring the less people as possible.
- or -
2) only knows that developers develop, but don't have a clue about how that is internally organised in a well structured team.1 -
Ugh, I feel like fucking crying every time I have to explain to the other developers and network sysadmins that we can't have the same Redis server for both session and caching data in the current project we're working on. I wrote all this down in the specifications which NO ONE reads!!
There are times like these I wish I just had access to the AWS account so I can do all of this myself.3 -
Daylight Savings Time.
Europe switches to DST this month and specs are broken because of Ruby's DateTime which isn't DST-aware so it generates invalid dates and can't do date math properly. Losing a couple days to refactoring horrendous code that uses *nested* Timecop.freeze, mixtures of Time, Date, and DateTime, math and parsing revolving around the end of the month.
Death to DateTime and death to DST.1 -
Atm, the most painful tooling is Rational ClearCase for version control (wtf?!) and IBM DOORS for reqs and test specs on a Windows machine.
Productivity = -13 -
I hate when writing specs, you hesitate on grammar because you might confuse French's grammar with English's3
-
Three hour meeting attempting to explain that the specs I received weren't clear, and that the calcs I was given weren't consistent with the rest of the reports we built.
End result: BA said he was right. I coded to spec. Told me finished report was all wrong and I had to redo it. -
Client: Hey, can you explain to me how this feature works? I'm totally confused.
Programmer: *explains the entire feature to client* Actually, you made the specs for this. *shows specifications document client created*
Client: Oh right. Sorry, completely forgot about that. It works great. But can we make some changes on...
OH HELL NO. -
"Just start ahead"
I am supposed to transform calls from one api to another one. Yet there's no documentation, ambiguous code statements, no examples of what values are contained -- but sure, let me just start assuming how the whole thing is supposed to work. That won't lead us more into a murky waters at all.
Even more frustrating: We own the api. We should be able to tell by the access logs how we are queried. Yet for some reason, access logs cannot be accessed and I shall "just work from the swagger defintion".
Well, that swagger definition is broken, its example are shit (somebody liked to use undefined in optional fields, making me wonder even more what the heck is going on here), and I have no idea of what I am doing. Fun times.3 -
We have to deliver a new functionality in 2 weeks and the client hasn't share with as the specs of the flow and the business details yet.
So until today we had developed the half functionality believing that our system will communicate with Web services with a third - not the actual one.
We figured it almost by luck, when randomly, a colleague from the third system made a funny comment.....2 -
When i once came to the crib of a random girl to bang her ofcourse she had an asus laptop and that laptop was about 17" screen I think, the specs were fuckin brutal and i was shocked, i wanted to touch it and find out more about the laptop and specs and gpu and what model was it and then i realized i came there to fck her but i was staring at the laptop like an asshole1
-
So, looking at the news coming out of WWDC... Is it just me, or is this something a collection of "about damn time" and "oh look, yearly specs upgrade" combined with a splattering of "wait, that wasn't already a thing?"

Appleism is a religion.
https://zdnet.com/article/...
My father got converted into it.
I offered him how to buy powerful pc with better specs for three times lower price, but he did not listen.30 -
Im thinking about getting a raspberry pi 3 or an odroid-c2.
(Specs at the end)
Its to host a simple php server and maybe a gitlab server, both for personal use.
Should I go with the better performance or the better community support?

Anyone else excited about the Pinebook Pro? It looks exactly like what I've been wanting in a cheap laptop for carrying around - an ARM based Linux laptop that has decently usable specs (unlike the original Pinebook).1

To all devs that aren't allowed to BYOD, what Specs has the PC/Laptop your company provided?
Mine:
i7 3rd gen
IGP
16GB of RAM
500GB HDD in RAID1
and two 27" FullHD Screens14 -
It's a bit late but what do these specs mean?
The f and the 16/20.
I thought I was getting 20mp but all the camera apps say maz is 16.
And for RAWS, dinner say 13, OpenCamera says 16.9 -
Do you know what YotaPhone 2 is? Second screen is e-ink, made by a small Russian co, with meh specs.
Dammit why do you push anOTA update that COMPLETELY fucks up the e-ink function?
Now the only reason I kept this... Thing... Fades fast. >.< -
Spent yesterday working on a card for adjusting a Graph query to properly sort records. Made all the specs. Tests them all. It gets approved.
Rebased today, and the project lead (who made the card I worked on, told me to work on it and approved my PR) put in a sorting scope that's totally different, in order to "unblock" a frontend dev.
After examining it and discussing it, my work was totally unnecessary, and didn't do what we really needed anyway. Closed my PR. Don't feel like doing shit today.2 -
Don't you just love those Stack Overflow answers that are filled with questions and judgement, (don't get me started with "What are your specs?" which I find the worst)3
-
Yes, a rant
About iPhone
Not apple watch though
You can literally build a computer with far better specs with how much they are charging for it
iPhones are literally expensive PoS depencies for Apple Watches (actually tried a bunch. AppleWatch is years ahead it's competitors
Change my mind. You won't16 -
I'm very sad.
I don't pretend to work on the next Facebook, Google search engine or something else.
I would to be part of something useful.
But i work in a shitty company where quality, architecture planning and TDD are underrated.
Only to build very simple webapplications, where things you take for granted like server side input or a simple error page without java stacktrace are missing or not planned properly.
We have functional analysts, but worst specs ever.
I hate all of this... -
If I get a nice capture/tuner card, do I need any other strong specs in its computer, other than RAM, to set up a myth box?
-
Sometimes when other devs ask me to explain something in the specs I cannot make into smaller words (example: javadoc says throws <error name> when x <= y. I was asked to explain 'what all this psuedocode means'), or their code horrifies me, I ask my mother if she knows what it is doing.... just as a 'wtf am I missing' check.
She still finds it amazing when we text her a gif and asks for help when she 'loses' her icons on her phone, but she will still ask what is wrong with some of these people.1 -
i have a question for you. You work for an industry, a factory, in house. You have only one developer to help you.
They ask you for an app to store production and get reports. Ok
Then before a year passed, they want you to start making apps for: project managment, hr 360 evaluation, implementation of SSO without paying a third party service (like auth0 or okta)
Would you feel comfortable, even if the proper time was given, to get involved with so many different domains without anyone above you having any idea about software lifecycle and development?4 -
My last day before vacation and I'm assigned a task without specs which could not be done in 1 day. I don't know what I'm doing and I feel very sorry for my colleague who covers me during my vacation.1
-
Me every time I get an email from recruiters:
void GetQuestionsToAsk(string taboo)
{
return "* Do I have to work with " + taboo + "?\n" +
"* Does anyone in the team write any " + taboo + "?\n" +
"* Is the word " + taboo + " even in the job specs?\n";
}
Call this function with "VBA", "SQL" and "Excel" and I'm good to go (matter of perspective if you want to proceed if the answer is positive ;) ).4 -
It's insane that to get a phone with decent specs without getting one that's even bigger than what I have(a 5.5" asus that feels like a behemoth) I had to get a phone that was released almost two years ago. I figure sony will release a new compact some time soon, but the price was right on the XZ2, and it feels wonderful to use a phone with one hand again.4
-
So an old friend (high school classmate) asked me recommendations on several older/second hand laptop ads he saw online. He listed several items with detailed specs sheets and I replied with
Ctrl+F thinkpad
Search term not found
and linked him to a thinkpad ad in the same price range but better specs.
I... still swear Im not a fanboy. -
Should I go for $30 or $60 a year hosting?
$30 is a local company with very lousy specs but would (hopefully) be good enough for a basic website.
$60 is DigitalOcean's cheapest droplet with far better value when comparing the specs offered.
Basically what it comes down to is should I prepare for the future by paying twice as much?10 -
I sure do love having to try to implement parts of a new system where the specs are being heavily changed every day...2
-
While working on our matlab project, my laptop just suddenly stop responding. Even the task manager isn't responding! Everything is fucked up and the file hasn't been saved yet. Then a friend of mine started saying that Mac is better than windows and im like:
"Bitch pls linux is the best"
I won't spend a lot of money to buy a macbook. I'd rather spend money buying a better laptop with great specs and dualboot Linux alongside Windows.3 -
Internal team changing specs because they don't understand how much work went into the project.
This is generally accompanied by the statement "that shouldn't take you very long." -
Almost any internally tool developed by a non-dev who has read a book 'learning to program in 21 days' and now thinks he can code. Usually it is developer in excel and as years pass complete departments depend on it until the moment a consultant is hired to completely rewrite it without any specs.
-
I have been working on tickets without specs almost since I got this role
This task is big ish I have been in a conv
Like "how long" "why didnt you complain"
And this and that
I tried to have weekly meetings or meetings. No success.
Now apparently it's partly my fault
Solution should have been tell my boss how to do his job, again, apparently -
There are two kinds of people in the world:
Type A: This has good built quality, is pretty upgradable, has reasonable specs and enough ports and doesn't break my bank. This is the right choice.
Type B: I might have to live on canned food for a while but this is the machine for professionals and I'm in the path of being a professional. Also, it just looks so good. It just feels right to buy this.3 -
So... I need to implement something from a spec based on a set of standards that use another set of standards based on IETF RFC.
Decide to use a library that implements the original specs. Nothing works.
Read through all of the specs, researched the standards they used, read the RFCs.
Turns out the library doesn't implement the specs properly. Looks like I'll still have to implement my own.
🙄 -
I just used a contact form of a local webshop. I couldnt enter my email address because it contains a +.
I contacted them to tell them about this issue and the response was it is because of security reasons. Since when is following specs a security breach? Unless their system is one leak I don't see how its possible.
Am I wrong or did they either lie or have a leak in their system?2 -
Question for Support:
What are the recommended system specifications for [X]. We have a client using a laptop with an [BEEFY-CPU] and 32 GB of RAM and your program hits 100% on both resources when this program is used.
Answer by Support:
Those specs look above our recommendations. Programs using 100% of computing availability is a good thing and it means that it is functioning correctly. Of course if they have a more powerful computer it will run faster, but I would say that they are well positioned.4 -
hi everyone just want your input planing to get a cheap laptop for development
Usage:
PHP
Nodejs
Yarn
Photoshop
Option1: Lenovo IdeaPad 330
Specs: Intel Core i3-7020U / 4GB DDR4 / 1TB HDD
Option2: Lenovo IdeaPad 330
Specs: AMD Ryzen 3 2200U / 4GB DDR4 / 256 SSD
Option3: ASUS X407UA
Specs: Intel Core i3-7020U / 4GB DDR4 / 1TB
im going cheapest as possible but it you guys think going to i5 would benefit more let me know18 -
It would be pretty awesome to create software directly with my mind. Just imagine the specs and *poof* there it is, without the need of actually typing the code down.
-
That feel when you're saving for a laptop and trying to work on a project for a client but your laptop is quite old (3 years and 5 months in my case) and decides to go crazy when for months ago, the same stuff open wouldn't lead to a variety of freezes.
I mean, there's new specs and stuff but spending in the £1-2 grand on a new one (at least one more up-to-date and with better specs) isn't going to happen anytime soon especially with the new job coming soon.
At least, I can do some of the stuff on my phone 😅. -
Estimates.. First, part of the team makes "high-level" estimates which are based on informal, incomplete, still-evolving specs and an unstable back-end. The project people report the estimates to the client and elevate the status of these inaccurate estimates to that of commitments.
Then, before the "sprint", we review our initial estimates *ahum commitments* in greater (technical) detail. Because there are still a lot of unknowns, we tend to estimate more buffer here (back-end is often not ready, always ping-pong between project people and dev-team about unclear specs, more work than originally expected, and often late modifications to the original spec).
When an estimate becomes more than 50% extra time at the "refinement", we are told: "sorry, we gotta do it in less" and when it doesn't work out, we're kindly asked to spend part of our weekend catching up at 100% pay rate (legally it's 150-200%).
FUCK THIS SHIT
*quotes used abundantly because these terms belong to "agile/scrum" terminology but we're only pretending -
A week late but I was just thinking about this:
How to slow down, read instructions/specs, ask instead of assume, and step away when my brain is going crazy.
I think the technical stuff I’m learning I could learn by myself, but needing to slow down and pay attention is a problem I’ve had my whole life, and I’m truly only now addressing it with help from my teachers, cause I’d fail every class if I didn’t!!! -
I need to get a laptop .. my machine is PC and that's because I couldn't find the same specs on a good laptop.
Now, I need it for mobility. Any suggestions?
Budget: $500 to $100039 -
Sometimes I ask myself how former IT people can become "Bosses"
Boss: We need to validate all links on our site
Me:Okay, let's vrab the response codes and some variations of under construction and we should be done.
Boss: No that only tests negatives, we need to test if the website content still matches.
Me: How?
Boss: Hmm... Just test if some keywords exist.
Me: So you want me to add a bunch of keywords for +-150 links? What about the maintenance?
Boss: Well, those sites basically never change.
Me: Then why do that?
Boss: Well, for when they change.
Now I can search through 150 mostly legal stuffy pages to find usefull keywords only to get a bunch of wrong negatives because the fucking semantics have changed...
+I have to type all that shit. Primarily, I have to type.3 -
Q. What's the greatest number of rebuilds / redesigns for a full system that you've done?
It still sticks in my head that in one job we went through five specs, and the system still didn't do what the business owner wanted! I think the goals posts must have had wheels!
😂😂😔😔😭😭😨😨4 -
Hello, I'm looking for a new machine but since I'm not very good with hardware, I'd like to ask for help:
I have a 7yrs old lenovo ideapad Y580, and even though I don't really play anymore on pc, I still would like the machine to last.
At first I was thinking about a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7 - Intel 10th Gen, but maybe I should go with a gaming laptop for the sake of the good specs? But then, which one? MSI, alienware ...?
And I'm a front-end, so I still need to be able to open graphic files.
TIA!3 -
Got a change request today. The client had written two lines.
The first line(specs): we would another installation type something like "blabla"(an existing installation type).
The second line just ask for an time estimate...
They same client have been known to use mspaint as the visual aid of how they want things to look, and it looks ugly.
My reply for the CR: The time needed to complete the task is 5 hours + whatever amount of hours I find suitable. -
Hello my fellow dev ranters! I've been speaking with my dad and he has been complaining about how slow is his old windows machine. I was thinking of move it to a Linux distro, but I don't know which.
The machine has 2gb of ram, about 200gb os disk, a ati radeon 2400 gpu and a intel dual core.
With these specs and taking into account that the final user is a person that mostly uses the pc for web browsing, sports stream and movies. What would be a good, lightweight and simple to use linux distro?
Thank you in advance!3 -
Just heard one of those little tidbits in passing about a detail for a spec which will require me to restructure the db and rework one of the core functions of the api and user client. Turns out one of the points in the original spec that was an "always" was actually a "usually, but-".
"sure, I'll see if I can get started on it tomorrow" because I'll spend today crying. -
think all of this impulsive OS booting is burning out my old laptop,
RemixOS - partially boots then gets stuck on a black screen
Android-x86 - won't boot past a black screen either
Windows 7 - i infected that shit so quickly lmao
Windows 10 - i'm not disgracing my old laptop with that
Xubuntu - boots, but my tablet configurator dosen't start properly wrapped in wine (Shenzen HUION only has Win and Mac drivers), and i am an artist
Gamedrift - haven't tried
ReactOS - Last time i checked, it won't boot but i should try again
any other suggestions?
super low specs on that old laptop7 -
So going to university in about 1 year, and ive been wondering, if I'm going into computer science or software engineering (my top 2 programs of choice), what laptop specs would u recommend? I'm currently running a computer with 8gb DDR3 RAM and a 5 year old Intel Pentium, integrated graphics, needless to say I think an upgrade would benefit. Thoughts?4
-
Sometimes Idk if it's MARS (a MIPS Assembly simulator) slowing down progressively on my laptop on purpose, or if my specs just can't take my runs of my Space Invaders project that was due for today, but...
With the parameters I put for my PC, it worked just great. But on the university PC, I can't tell what's worse between playing my game or playing Touhou 6 at 650FPS. -
I'm trying to decide between a MacBook Pro 13" (2017) vs. MacBook Air (2018).
Specs are somewhat similar; but with a huge price tag difference. The MacBook Air costs a quarter more where I live. I can afford either; my dilemma is which model's usefulness will last longer.
I need it to build and test a React Native application with some custom native code 😟8 -
Someone said that I should optimize the performance of a website. In fact, the problem was the hardware specs and they still want me to optimize the UI. I have less dependencies, no weird event loops and a JSON that is twice as big because the guys at the backend said they're too lazy to optimize it.
So... It's either they upgrade the specs or blame the guys who made the api response.1 -
Work to clients specs, sign off the job. Three months later they email asking why things are the way they are.. because they asked for it that way!
-
Hey guys, I have a low spec machine with these specs:
32 GB SSD
4 GB RAM
Intel Pentium processor 1.66 GHZ 64 bit
I want to install a lightweigh Linux distro, could you recommend one.
P.S: Currently I am thinking of Bodhi or ArchLabs.4 -
Kinda slow day, let's read some of the old test specs in preparation for the next project...
zzzzzzzzz......
Oh, look at the time! Let's just finish that tomorrow.. -
Collect project specifications & details.
- order by relevance.
List & install dependencies (possibly spin up a vm).
mkdir ~/Code/{lang}/{framework?}/{project}
Bootstrap skeleton & scaffold.
- ensure functional base.
Iterate specs list & create test case(s) one at a time, going: test => minimal to pass => refactor => next(repeat_cycle)1 -
Is buying macbook worth it? I mewn thre are a lot of laptops under vwry low price range that look like macbook and have far better specs10
-
Do you think is it worth buying macbook air or some other laptop for the same price? I know I can get better specs for that money but I dont game or do a lot of video editing so I Don't need a beast graphic card, I just need it for coding. What do you think?6
-
After a week of designing an API to our system for another team followed by redesigning it because they 'know what they need when they see it' I think I understand the pains all of you guys who work directly with customers go through what leads to exactly one question : How did you manage to never kill anyone?1
-
Thinking of building my own lab server for core development work. 16GB RAM/Core i7 processor on my mind....What specs work for you?3
-
The analytics guy just sent me updated tracking specs for a web site.
There are two sheets in the file: "Custom Events LATEST" and "Custom Events updated". This is already confusing enough.
One of them has comments like "I'd like this to be amended", but the event specs described are the same as the ones implemented.
I asked him for clarification, turns out he wants the ones marked in black to be updated, the ones that don't have any label saying they don't need to be updated.
This is also a guy who for at least 2 years has been making columns in spreadsheets wider not by just widening them, or merging multiple cells, but by just letting text overflow into other cells.
I do wonder how some people manage to keep a job. -
Do you think that's a good idea to work with 4 developers on a shared development server without functional or technical specs and versioning software or testing methods/environment?
Just asking for a friend, not for my future employer...2 -
Product designer keeps on changing designs and managers approve it every single time. Totally frustrated to work. Why can't they think of scenarios based on design? Why should they allow me work on something guaranteeing that things won't be changed but change every single time.
I know product specs change, but too much of change frustrates the developer. Why does no body care for developer's mindset? -
String s = "Rant";

update on the Lenovo shit laptop.
getting a new custom made laptop with better specs sadly had to give away 2gb video ram but I can live with that it also comes with a third disk so let the O's recommendations come.
specs will be in a comment3 -
ping REST API that is written in rust
it has specs. it will return json with result or error in it.
it's just returning result: null and no error
this is written in rust. how are you writing me responses with null objects in them? rust doesn't have null! how broken is this thing.

Been making minor refactors to code base. Ran into something that resembles and behaves like a brainfart. Accepts arguments, uses them to query DB then completely disregards result and builds own result yielding dubious output.
Dumb as I am, went to investigate the story behind it. Maybe some weird business rules involved.
Git gave commit. 100+ files changed. Nice one.
Went to original story and there it was, clearly stated, like a true moronic decision: "Squash all feature commits to a single commit". No specs, no description, no explanation... Nothing.
Well... FUCK YOU TO!2 -

I recently un-boxed a pixel 2, though great on the specs side, I wouldn't buy it because of the looks and weight,
It just doesn't feel great in the hand, I mean if am spending that much, I should feel am holding a premium device at hand, but It feels like a dummy,
Camera might be great, but the bezel was too big -
I’m learning react native frontend so can anyone please post random design specs links? I promise to show result, push code to GitHub and maybe a YouTube video of me doing the design.
Note: I’ll be designing a single page per design1 -
What's the most modern game you've ever played on (GNU/ if you insist)Linux?

Does anyone else share the love for lenovo laptopd when it comes to coding? Price, specs and sexy keyboard :o3

There is no reason for detailed tech specs except for putting blame on people and covering ass. (Critical industry with strict standards excluded)
It should be a high level overview.
Then you start working on it and then review small pieces in code review and make modifications as more edge cases surface.2 -
Hello Devs, Please Suggest Me A Good Laptop.
Specs I Probably Need:
256 or 512 SSD
i7 6th gen
8 or 16 GB DDR4 RAM
Dedicated Graphics or Touch Screen(Ultrabook or something)
Really Confused between Yoga 910 and Lenovo Y700. Or what will be the best device(Portable and Powerful) for us?6 -
Working with non-existing specs. Just have to pick a guess what arguments and columns that will be needed. Right now it feels like I'm up to a very fuzzy task, that will need to be done over and over again until it gets right, instead of doing it right once and for all. If this is agile, then agile is a waste of time!5

Around the web and within the CSS Working Group, there has been some discussion about whether we should specify a version of CSS — perhaps naming it CSS4.
I think there is some value in grouping a bunch of specs into tidy version labels like "CSS4". It's much easier for me to ask "does this browser support CSS4?" than it is to ask "does this browser support CSS Color Level 3, CSS Namespaces, Selectors Level 3, etc."
Also, as a developer, if there were a group of specs known as CSS4 gaining traction on the web, I'd know that I need to be well-versed in each included spec, as opposed to just trying to become more fluent in different specs as I come across them in my daily work or research.
Your opinion?8 -
I have a beast laptop
it was full specs except ram it was only 8
so now i bought +8 and got gat 16 ram
i named the laptop ARK (like noah ark)

I know this is not a rant, so maybe I'm a *bit* off topic, but I need some help. I'm about to get a new laptop. I'm on my final year of uni and I think I'll focus on machine learning from now on. I'm between buying a Lenovo laptop (IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6) and running ubuntu on it, or a 2019 MacBook Pro. The specs on the lenovo are better, I know, but I always kinda wanted a mac and now I'm torn between doing what's best and what will please my long time macbook desire. Any opinions? Thank you in advance!5

Web devs, let's be honest. When was the last time you checked your HTML's conformity with W3C specs?7

Working on API part of current project, we were prepared with the API specs. The application that we are writing is supposed to replace the old and expensive on-the-shelf application that they bought licenses from overseas vendor years ago. In short, we writes an application that provides same functionalities at cheaper price for our client.
After it is all done, the client mentioned some of the API calls return wrong/incorrect response.
Furios, went to check the specific API call and confirmed that there's nothing wrong with it - all according to specs.
It turned out that the client didn't check against the specs, but with their current application instead.
That application didn't meet the specs they provide 100% (not broken functionalities but rather it was full with bugs here and there) and apparently the client have gotten used to it.
Now, we are writing our application to provide the same buggy API responses.... because the client doesn't want to introduce change to their clients.
I am writing to provide an empty json array instead of actual data....wtf -
What are the minimum PC specs you feel comfortable with for development? Of course app development and anything medium sized and up with an IDE needs decent specs, but I'm wondering about the lower end of the spectrum. Scripting things and such.2

reading books, documentations and specifications within minutes and remember anything in it, so i can directly start on getting to work and know which solution might be the best without spending days in specs and doc. :)

I just landed a job in data science, and I've been asked by my employer about the hardware specs of the machine that I'm going to use. What do you guys suggest? I don't want to be a financial burden, but I also want something that wouldn't require frequent upgrades.1

All you front end devs who work with dedicated design teams, what's you usual workflow? Do the designers pass on the UI kit with all the assets and dimensions and you clone the thing using whatever stack you're using or do you all decide the specs on the fly looking at the general visual structure of the design?5

Working from home today.
I have been in this role for many months now. Not a single ticket with specs.
Question in my email inbox
"Estimates" for current ticket.
Without specs, well some time I guess. -
Has anyone around here installed the Developer Preview of Android P on their Pixel (any model)?
I'm trying to figure out which models would have access to the android.net.wifi.rtt APIs.
If one of you Pixel with Android P owners could send me the result of `context.packageManager.hasSystemFeature(PackageManager.FEATURE_WIFI_RTT)`, that would be a ton of help to me :)
PS: to run this, you'd probably need to install the Android P Preview SDK platform, there's a tutorial to do just there: https://developer.android.com/previ...1 -
After ranting here about no meetings
My boss decided to have one about why we haven't delivered a feature (w/o specs)
And fastest solution even he could help writing pure SQL code in code.

I'm thinking to buy an android phone, as a secondary device(iPhone primary), I would like to install Kali, don't care about cam specs, would like it to be cheap but not painfully slow. any suggestions?5

When you get the proper specs only after the current changes on the provided 'vague' spec sheet, that the stakeholders created, goes to production and it's not what they want...

I'm the only one here who cares little about hardware?
I hear people (even non IT ones) spending months in comparing computers and reading any technical spec (cache size, RAM frequency...) before buying one while I just give a glance to the main specs (CPU, RAM, GPU) and if they're decent enough and I like the price I buy, once I even bought a laptop while half drunk and I haven't regretted the purchase.2 -
Found a IGEL UD3 M350C Thin Client Workspace Edition in a yard sale the pother day. The thing has awesome specs but comes with the IGEL OS which sucks. Anybody used one of these before? If I can get it to use a different OS than the IGEL one it'd be great
