What. The. Fuck. Did. Just. Happen.
A random girl followed me on social media. She looked nice and intelligent so I followed her back.
Started to chat about some random stuff. She told me she works at the HR department of an international company and asked me what's my job. Told her I'm a software developer.
Right after that she sent me a selfie. Obviously I said she looks nice, she thanked it and asked some more about my job. After a short discussion I received another selfie but somewhere in between she lost the outer layer of her clothing.
She still looks nice but now I'm sitting here utterly confused and cant tell whether it was my sarcastic humour and moderately handsome facial features which charmed her or she just needs to recruit someone for a new project and willing to do everything to reach the quota.67 -
Sorry, I just had to post this cable porn I found posted in some random subreddit.
Just look at those curves12 -
At work today.
Collegue: hey, if you continue like this, you'll be just like me in a year or so!
Me: as, so completely fucked up?
Boss: hahaha rekt!
C: okay gotta give you that one 🤣
Love those random moments :)2 -
Sometimes I just randomly start installing a new vps, configure the server, put a random sub domain on it, forward nginx with SSL, print something random on the page and then just remove the thing again.
Solely because I enjoy installing servers/configuring them.
Am I weird? 😅70 -
This actually happened today
Colleague: Hey man I think there's a problem with my computer.
Me: Alright, I'll check it out.
(I go to his desk and find that his screen was turned off)
Colleague: It just suddenly turned off.
Me: (presses a random key on his keyboard)
(Screen lights up)5 -
People will always ask us to fix their computer :/
Had a meeting with IT-director of our client.
Me: Yes, with our solution you will be sure that the details of all your 17.500 employees will be stored and accessible for all required third party systems. We will have a 6 month preliminary schedule and it will cost..
Random: Excuse me!
Random employee interrupts and has actually stepped into the meeting room.
Random: Can you take a look at my computer? Something is wrong.
IT-director: Is there noone else who can look at this?
Random: But it was working a minute ago. It probably will be a quick fix?
IT-director looks at me like "what even is this?"
IT-director: Go down to the 12th and talk to IT there, we're having a meeting here.
Random: I thought you guys who are so good with computers could fix this in a jiffy!
Me: Burning inside
IT-director: Just leave us, please.
Random leaves.
IT-director looks at me and I look knowingly back. We are both sad for a moment. Then we continue.9 -
When you're just coding away in some Coffee Shop and some random guy/girl asks you
"are you trying to hack the wifi" smh12 -
Feeling bored? Just break a random component of your OS and spend a few minutes fixing it. If you're lucky these minutes will expand to hours. Problem solved!8
-
Wouldn't be amazing if we could charge like doctors?
User: good morning engie, just here for my checkup.
Engie: everything seems to be working perfectly with your laptop. That would be 70 bucks.
Not comparing professions just a random thought.12 -
Hey devRant. What the fuck is up?
I'm new and just wanted to say hi or whatever. I don't even work in any computer science related job. I'm a fucking welder.
I have aspirations one day to be just like you nerds. I fall asleep at my desk almost every night taking random online programming classes which I lose interest halfway through to some OTHER class and redo the same shit.
Is this what it's like to be smart?36 -
Very funny/random/weird partly non-dev related story that happened today.
We're selling our coffee machine at work since the coffee is gross.
Someone wants to buy it and wants it to be sent.
Coworker: just the general way through a package?
Other coworker: hmm yeah through post is fine
Me: POSTAL PIDGIN
other colleague: BY PENGUIN
Another colleague: BY LIKE 100 PENGUINS FLYING THAT THING THROUGH THE AIR WITH LIKE WIRES ATTACHED TO IT
Me: just hold on for a second and imagine this graphically...
Colleagues: damn that would be fucking genius xD
Yeah we're quite random 😆30 -
New random background image for my homepage.
Dunno where I found my inspiration, just opened inkscape and started clinking the mouse7 -
When it comes to users, perception is everything.
The task: Choose x random contractor numbers for us to assign to y jobs.
Me: How many contractors are there?
Mgr: 25
Me: How many jobs need assignment?
Mgr: 25
Me: Does the program need to assign contractors to individual jobs?
Mgr: No, we just need the 25 contractor numbers
Me: Well in that case just use the list I gave you earlier.
Mgr: No, we can't do that. It won't be random
Me: 😑😑😑😑😑
Fix? Return a list of 25 contractor numbers in a slightly different order than the one originally submitted (5 or 6 items moved around)
The manager was pleased.3 -
"Imagine everyone is an object. You are an object, you are an object, you are an object." My lecturer said while pointing to random students in the class. Oh how I wanted to quip "So you think girls are just objects?" 😂13
-
I just mistyped a keyboard shortcut that caused my computer to say «I AM FILO AND EVERYONE LOVES ME» at full volume.
I have no memory of leaving a script attached to some random shortcut, and I can't find the setting anywhere.
Young me was a narcissistic asshole1 -
Just gotta love random hibernation wake ups, went sleep on time in like a year, fell asleep quick and then my fucking 3 monitors turn on and the fucking pc woke up, for no fucking reason, blasting equal of 4 suns into my eyes.9
-
A random number generator in my code just gave "0000". I even thought that could be some bug and was investigating. How cool is that?2
-
I want to vomit everytime rich people in upper management says stupid shit like "working for money in this company is a sin. Work for higher reason"
Hello, if only I get paid as much as you earn just by talking random nonsense in every meeting, I would be glad sharing the same shit quote like that to other employees in the company.17 -
Just heard at the coffee machine: "Well, does that mean I'm not allowed to use Trump's quotes to seed the random numbers generator?"1
-
Working from home. That time you spend commuting is spent on working. That random guy showing up at your desk breaking your concentration doesn't exist. If there's a bullshit meeting you have to go to, you can dial in, put yourself on mute and continue to work while listening and just unmute as needed.
Seriously so much more productive.11 -
Published a well documented and tested API with project examples for basic use cases
- "Yeah we didn't use yours because we didn't know how to use it"
- "Did you look at the documentation or code examples?"
- "What where?"
- "In the repo you just cloned"
- "Yeah no <random guy> found a hacky way of doing what we want, his thing just works"
- "I..."4 -
Felt bad for everyone working on Christmas, so I just pushed an update to all my programs which will pop up random Christmas jokes to the working users on Christmas day. Hope that brightens their day!3
-
Kudos to @trogus and @dfox for introducing the new refresh button on the nav bar instead of the odd position at the end of the comments.
It's looking awesome now.
Note: If the screenshot violates anyones privacy. Let me know. It is just a random screenshot16 -
Just updated to the latest insider build for Windows 10.. left PC unattended and came back later and it was ready... no BSODs, no random crashes, no issues, nothing... it just works as expected...
I can hear Linux fanatics screaming after reading this 😂
FUCK all this Windows stereotypes BS going on here13 -
Why are all flat and fully closed design raspberry pi zero cases either only available in a fucking $100 bundle or have holes somewhere to accomodate for the fucking pinheaders or just random dickholes, for no fucking reason.21
-
Random profesional behavior reminder:
The fact that you're obviously from a minority doesn't automatically make you non-racist. Specially, it doesn't give you immunity for being racist towards other minorities.
Just saying! Be racist outside of office hours, if you can. Or just... Keep that shit to yourself. 💩40 -
Anyone watched 'Jhonny English Strikes Again'? This is the code that drives the exoskeleton... I guess it just needs a random number to work. 😂😂3
-
!rant
That rejuvenating feeling when you've been trying to get a piece of code working for days, google hasn't helped, and you're just about to call it another lost day, when a random "what happens if I do this" solves everything.
I'm going to dream about puppies, prancing through a meadow, and rootbeer floats tonight!2 -
Raspberry pi worked perfectly fine. Reinstalled the sd card for some reason (on purpose) and now, no matter what system I flash, it always crashes at stone point. That point is random every fucking time.
I just want this fucker to work 😥18 -
That cringe fest when non IT people throw random phrases related to IT which doesn't even make sense just to impress the audience6
-
Sometimes, when I write scripts to scan random IP addresses for an unsecure VNC server or develop my own NES emulator and someone asks me "Whatcha doin'?", it's just easier to lie rather than start explaining, so I reply:
- Nothing... Just some web dev.2 -
It happened just now.
Yes, I put "there is no need to be upset 10 hours" on governmental terminal.
#hackerman
How? Well, I discovered that it was web ui, so random menu category -> random external governmental website with Google map on it -> you know the rest.4 -
Making ciri from the witcher upcoming tv series a black asian minority ( although she has has elf blood . Elfs are white not black ).
Master/slave controversy.
Introducing random gay movie scenes just for the sake of diversity.
What's next ? Making a documentary about linus torvalds with him being a black asian gay feminist ?8 -
A bot just made 519 pull requests with malicious Makefile code to get a github actions server to send a curl to a random host.
It's gonna be one of those days6 -
Just typed /dev/rant instead of /dev/random on the terminal :/ I think I associated random with rand and then rant, oh my god, I need to sleep2
-
My dad thinks I write a hundred characters which seem like an alien language a minute. My mum thinks I'm just 1 click away from hacking Pentagon. My step-dad, someone who knows computers a tad, knows I'm just typing random stuff hoping it works and he knows for sure I do not have a clue how it works.1
-
I recently broke up with my boyfriend of more than two years (we have known each other for more than four). My code (and my work in general) seems to have gotten better. Maybe because he's not always at the back of my mind. No matter what anyone says, long distance WILL take a toll on you if you don't meet the other person for more than a year. Nope. Nope. Nope. I'm loving the single life now and feel so much more confident about myself!14
-
This happened yesterday. It was a Friday and I didn't have much time to implement something that I was asked.
I was supposed to get the cpu temperature from a host device and send it to the server. Instead I just used random.randint(x,y) (python random function) with x,y linearly dependent on cpu utilisation (cpu utilisation is easy to get).
The ability to generate random numbers on fly has to be on of the coolest things that you can do. You can almost fake anything using them properly 😅7 -
OMFG! Who’s bright fucking horrible stupid ass idea was it to mix Ajax with php (php deciding the ajax paths) with random js outputting HTML inside random fucking static divs found no where near the logical route of content.
Trying to add a simple fucking status to a gigantic cluster fuck of a legacy project is just FUCK.
If I could I would burn this bitch to the ground and start again I would, But no, it’s needed.
Someone kill me before I break the shit out of this thing, I would take a wordpress project right now instead. -
I am getting better and better. I no longer leave ":w" at random places in Google Docs... Now I'm just "cmd-s"-ing regularly.6
-
Just a random thought.
If you are going to remove the headphone jack in phones because your goal is to make it slimmer, we'll why not put two USB c ports? One for charging and other actions, one for other actions only13 -
As a 16 year old, the hardest problem I've always encountered is trying to explain to people that coding as actually more complex than just typing random words.7

Windows update fails with error 0x1235
Me in Technet: Hey, ms, i got this error. How do i fix it?
MS: Install the Troubleshooting for Windows Update and follow the instructions. Before that, create a system restore just in case. Also, if the problem persists, go to your boot menu -> troubleshooting options and follow the instructions.
Hope it helps.
Found it helpful? Yes No
Other random people: just rename $WINDOWS ~BT to anything or delete it. Then continue the process.
.
.
I followed the random people advice and worked.
Fuck MS.1 -
Put random text in window.alert() where ever I got error in JavaScript code. Random text like 1) If you see this, you are fucked; 2) error 001; 3)why today; 4) the code is breaking here etc.
And never removed them. They are the running in production till now. I am just thankful to the gods that the code Nevers break and the user does not get browser alert and also the fact that I don't work there anymore.4 -
Apparently some fucking moron bot has started sending spam messages to random people using my email address in the 'from' field.

People love fast moving green text with a black background.

Working as a software engineer but: co-workers randomly walk into my office to ask me <<insert random IT problem (i.e. mouse not working etc.)>> while I'm deeply focused programming. Trying to close my office door results in co-workers backbiting...
Why can't they just go to the IT administrator who's work it is to handle their fucking problems?3 -
Sometimes I wish I could run code outside computers/servers/microchips. Then I could build another world.3
-
Just a random thought, I sometimes in my sleep am able to switch my fucking alarm off, so it will be good if an app can move the entire stop/snooze button randomly on the screen. It will be effective I guess, what do you guys think?6

That moment when you are just testing a web framework, you type some random text, open in browser, and Google asks whether it could translate it. Yea sure... go ahead! 😛5

I feel the whole universe is a programmed game and someone is playing us. Like when we're playing GTA.
Few of us are the main characters and the rest of us are just random objects to populate the earth, we don't have any rule in the story. :(
Birth is the Constructor()
Death is the Finalizer()4 -
The company I work for just followed me on Twitter.
Now I can't just complain about random bullshit happening at work :/8 -

https://youtube.com/watch/...8 -
One of my weirder(?) quirks now is to use '//' for things that aren't even programming related. Just to make random comments here and there. So, my little sister just learned some basic coding. She told me that now she finally understands why I kept adding random '// ' while texting her.

Product gets launched in 2 hours. Just casually updating the documentation. Nice chill day. Everything tested and validated.
Then some random f**king designer comes barging in vomiting all these "necessary" features to the product owner.
This was yesterday. The designer and product owner are currently complaining to us devs that there are bugs everywhere...
I need a beer.3 -

Story Time.
I was hanging around at a friend's place when she informed me that her roommate is throwing a really lavish party 50kms away from the city. I got invited by said roommate and I agreed to go.
When we arrived at the venue, there were like 100+ people at this place, all smoking weed drinking and dancing in loud music. I was also stoned at that point.
So at one point, my friend abandoned me and I found myself talking to 10 complete strangers. I realized that I was on my own and thought about seeing how much rizz I got.
Mind you that everyone was drunk and there was loud music everywhere so there was no way anyone else knew that I was getting shot down lol.
After couple rejections, I straight up went to a girl and said "You want to smoke weed and make out in the bathroom?" And to my surprise, she said yes. So, we both already high and drunk slipped into the bathroom and made out for like 10 mins and I smoked all my weed with her.
Then, at some other point, my friend showed up and we went home. The one thing I missed, was asking for her number, which I kicked myself later for. I guess stoners don't realize they have phones.4 -

So you do without creating a proper architecture, then they tell you to add these new features for the time being, then they keep adding random more new features and eventually your code becomesa complete mess :|2 -
I just started my new job as web developer. I have to work on an already existant PHP project, made by a random guy before me.

Who codes while laying in bed? 🤨 Just saw a random coding video and the guy was just laying in bed with facecam.
I'm tempted to get a laptop just to try it and achieve my final form.31 -
When your new build is compiling and just scooting right along so you think... sure, I could go for some food. No. Nope. Not even. It chooses the exact moment you leave to nope the fuck out completely with the most random compiler errors that you would have never seen had you just been sitting there in the chair. It's like it knows. Maybe next time I leave I'll promise to bring it back a taco.1

Not planning ahead, just start at some point, adding just a tiny little feature after another, and then wondering why your to do app (just to check out a new framework or language) suddenly comes with Blockchain, a chatbot and a machine learning algorithm that (slowly) learns when the best time to show random cat videos is...

What the fuck is wrong with Windows?
I put it into sleep. After a while, it just wakes up again.
I put it into hibernation. It boots up again.
I closed anything that could potentially wake it up like instant messengers etc.
Still it wakes up after a random amount of time.11 -
my friend was bragging how he could program a game on his TI-84 calculator
it was just a (buggy) random number game
I told him good job, I program a bit, too
he said "yeah? what do u do?"
I said "I made two apps"
he walked away
I thanked god -
I have an uncanny ability to--in the middle of coding--open a tab on the browser and type just about anything on the search bar and go on to what I am starting to call a "link binge".
I pretty much bounce around the internet reading about random (not even useful, always) shit and end up wasting hours. -
Random poll:
If you have pets, do you own a cat or a dog?
A colleague has a personal statistic that says most developers have cats rather than dogs.
Just checking her data!52 -
Just some random thoughts looking at the soon-to-be new filtering feature.
Wouldn't it be nice if DevRant had a QR login like WhatsApp for easy login on desktop?
What about a "top rants" on profiles?
Oh what about an activity mosaic like GitHub's commit timeline?
Just some thoughts I had while punching my punching bag, it can get tedious.5 -

Need help. Just realized that I have been responding to every interaction I have had lately in a negative way. Not sure what's going on, but I just seem to always respond with a negative response. I consider myself a critical thinker, and a devil's advocate. From a previous comment on this site, to a random facebook post of someone sharing an animal rights post. I usually just ignore them and move on, but I ended up responding with poor intention.4 -
When you open your laptop and see the mail, just a random day and you think nothing is gonna get better and you see 2 internship offer letter, after making many projects, year of study.
This part of my life

How many ducks do @dfox and @trogus have laying around their houses?
I was just looking through the store, adding a duck and a stress ball and maybe a hoodie to my cart. I then realized that each item has a real photo or two attached to it.5 -
[Hardware geeks, microcontroller geeks, please come]
Yet another Hacktoberfest tshirt...
Gotcha? (I bet you know who I am)
Just kidding. Just a random project idea I am not sure if it is possible to make from scratch.
It is essentially a usb external storage
About 32gb
And has a lcd that shows available storage space
And some buttons to play snake. (Yup)
Is it possible?
What should I expect when creating from scratch? (Microcontroller, c language, interfaces, etc)13 -
It's annoying when you just want to learn something as quickly as possible but this tutor talks about his cats or random things that distract him that distract me.5

Just a random shout out to @Lyniven for helping me with modular application architecture at past few days3

PSA: If you need to make dummy commits to trigger a pipeline for test purposes, please just use --allow-empty and make an empty one. Don't just add random newlines back and forth in stupid places.6

I just switched from Arch to Fedora...
I know I know that all the cool kids use arch, but right now I'm not up for checking out random gdm bugs or some other manual tasks. I need a stable, fairly supported and well maintained distro and fedora just works!11 -

Just realised my game development and design teacher is the senior game designer of sacred 2. Well next lesson gonna be a constant flame of this shitty random drop generator which literally mostly drops you stuff for all the other classes. -
Just spent 20 mins trying to figure out why new lines weren't printing and why random '0's were in the text.
Turns out I was replacing with +"\n" which JavaScript converts to a 0.
Fuck this8 -
Don't know.
All I know is that I suck at calculus but I write good code.
Weird.
If I would have to decide, early on I wrote random stuff 'til it worked.
Then I attempted to comprehend what I just did and started reading books.
That's probably when I first understood what I was doing.6 -
I've never had a bad interview but one turned mildly awkward when I found out that the whole Dev team had watched a video of me from when I was in a band. We used to just make random videos to keep fans coming back to our site. https://youtu.be/V5zQjjCu_V01

Finally became a 2GB lol just random but a milestone nonetheless. Thanks all for listening to my inner voice when i feel there is no place to get these recursive thoughts out of my head.
Have a great day2 -
So today a colleague confessed to an attempt to troll my computer by SSHing into it and playing random songs. Thankfully he did not manage but he would just happen to do it the day we have a security audit.

After hours of development, updated code on server, closed ide, out of habbit oppened browser, went to http://localhost/, just to check how api is responding... No response. Restarted server. No response. 30 minutes of random tests/checks, no result at all. 30 nervous minutes later, realized that server was working fine... it's just me who freaking tried to access it via localhost. ffs 0_0

Well, that's one way of getting rid of bugs and creating other issues, since it never works out to have just random people fix never to be touched again systems9

Why do tech impaired people always break their tech and they have "no idea" how it broke...
Seriously? What did you do? You know what you were doing? Were you touching random setting again? For fuck sakes just tell me. You've fucking it up 3 times this week already it's not like I don't know your an incompetent prick.4 -
What is it with this sudden surge in shitty memes? Is it normal around this time?
Might just filter out the random category completely if this holds on. Ironic.8 -
!rant, !dev, random thought
We live in the past. Everything we call the present has already happened, we just aren't immediately aware of it.
For example, if the sun suddenly exploded, we would live for ~8 mins thinking nothing had happened. On the human scale, this still holds although the delays are much smaller. (also, the sun isn't where it appears to be :D)
Our senses deceive us 😯
Open to criticism :) just thought it was an interesting thought.7 -
Remember about this project of mine? Maybe not because I deleted the rant, but after a long pause I re-started working on it. In -just- 1 hour I wrote this code that picks a random number, goes from 0 to 5 and, if found, it prints the match.
This is my most (useless && senseless) project by far.4 -
Now that we have devDucks with capes, if we get one will be getting also a virtual cape for our virtual devDuck? It would be really nice to have it, just a random idea :)3

Hello Darkness, my old friend, I finally moved to dark side xD. Paying a little didn't even hurt, though I got some stickers from Unixstickers, thanks to someone in comment on a random rant here.
P. S. - No, I haven't used them all yet, I just put them together for a group photo and no, arch is not like that.12 -
Does anyone have that day where you just can't get into the flow and you wander around doing random stuff but nothing changes?

Just a random thought.. instead of sending stickers (or the stress ball for that matter) from USA to someone in India, why can't there be distributed 3D printing services spread across the globe, so that it's just a matter of delegating the delivery to local deliver services in the country/city? Sounds like an idea? 🤔2

Fuck azure. Not even 2 hours in and this is the biggest bullshit I've seen. So fucking overcomplicated just to sign in and use the azure portal. Fighting dev environment stuff makes me sometimes wish I could be evil and have some sort of framework that when an API call fails it just makes a second call to the PokeAPI and returns some random results ... because if shit is gonna be absurd it may as well be fun absurd.

How many hours of actual productive work do you devs average a day? Honestly, I think I average about 2 hours of honest, good work in my 8 hour day. Between random meaningless meetings that could be emailed out or just daily distractions (coworkers chatting, my phone, etc). Am I alone in this?8

Just in a meeting with data science team. Anyone think a podcast with no specific topic hosted by programmer that are all experienced in different areas (EG. Game developer, front end developer etc) that just talk about random shit?
Just curious because I love the Triforce podcast and considering that is supposed to be a gaming podcast hosted by fairly different people.
Btw this is just a hypothetical, don't think I'd be able to pull it off!1 -

Dear Client,
Proper English sentence structure, the kind that accurately conveys what you mean to ask me to do for you, requires a subject and a predicate. To hearken back to “Schoolhouse Rock”, if Mr. Morton is the subject of my sentence, then what the predicate says, he does. Mr. Morton walks. Mr. Morton talks. Etc.
Just tossing out random nouns and verbs in random order in an email will not help me to help you.
Sincerely,
Mr. Morton -
Just make a program that spits out random strings, run it as code and see if it compiles. If not, repeat. That way, just like the apes typewriter thing, you find the most amazing code that is so complicated, nobody would have thought of, but it solves all of humanities problems, especially the power problem you created by running this code 1000000000000000000000 times parallel.9

I'm not sure if this should be a joke or random, but the SBB train info screen in St. Gallen on platform 5 just decided to interpret the data given a bit differently than intended.
It is not broken and no other screen has that problem. What could it be, I wonder. But I don't care enouht to post it as a question.
I guess random would have been more appropriate.13 -
Okay so I am a computer science student, and here's what my parents and relatives think I do-

Look at this amazing chaos game fractal.
Three vertices of an equilateral triangle and a random point p between any two vertices are taken, then we generate a random integer between 1 and 6 (just like throwing a dice) .if 2 or 4 comes on the dice we draw a point between the random point p and the vertex v1.similarly if 3 or 4 comes on dice , we draw a point between the previously drawn point and vertex v2.for 5 or 6 the vertex is v3.after a few iterations we get to see this amazing pattern30 -
I feel like Job Listings for programmers are just copied and pasted at random. "5+ years experience with C++" seems a little extreme for a company that makes landing pages and sends out email blasts.
-
This weeks question fits me well, as I am still unsure about the full details of how the fuck this all came together and was about to just rant about it anyway.
Ever since this companies network equipment and cabling has been updated, a lot of vital tools went down and bug out every now and then, at seemingly random times.
The codebase is a horrible mess to begin with and random things execute at random times and at random places spread all over different resources that get random hooks from random physical values etc.
Turns out (or at least what it so far seems like) all of them somehow sync their clock and other variables based on how many (valid-?) requests it gets per measured time and similar oddities, so when the network equipment got updated, that meant that multiple processes now could reach each other much faster and therefore threw off thousands of values and internal clocks.
There's a total of like 600 systems that are all "separate" from each other but all need to communicate in-sync for the production chain to properly work. Thankfully I didn't sign anything yet, so might actually just redirect them to somebody else, I am not ready to age 20 years, even for the amount that would pay.1 -

Probably one of the sweetest bugfixes is when you can solve random application freezes by rearranging the operands in the if() condition :)

by simply making the bias random on the second input for a two bit binary input during activation calculation, it's possible to train a neural net to calculate the XOR function in one layer.

Just read a rant about webpack and suddenly the hate boiled up again ...
Why is it just so damn annoying to configure?
Just make it like gulp or so where you have an actual idea on the workflow, rather than just throwing in plugins at random and let magic happen without knowing wtf is going on.

If you're using random in python, and need arbitrary precision, use mpmath.
If you're using it with the decimal module, it doesn't automatically convert just so you know.
Instead convert the output of arb_uniform to a string before passing to the decimal module.3 -

So I’m writing this random number generator app just because so many apps charge you for this simple thing and posted my progress somewhere else. And this guy just commented: you can do it in python in 2 lines

Is it just me or does the youtube frontpage take like ~12 seconds to load until you can click and interact with it recently?

My hard drive made a short sort of grinding noise today and the machine didn't post but didn't turn off. Turned it off and on again. Everything is fine. Trying to develop and everything is just throwing the most random bs errors I'd ever seen.
Turns out somehow many, many, many directories became corrupted. Couldn't even run a check disk and half of windows broke.
Just thought I'd share that since I've never seen anything like it. -

Dahhhhh. A few times a day, seemingly at random, one of the fans in my PC starts making a horrendous noise.
This would be mildly annoying, but fine if I could actually just isolate where the noise was coming from. But whenever I go to move the bloody thing and pop off the side case, it stops again 😬
Don't really fancy replacing all the fans one by one just in case they're the issue...9 -
Question for iOS users (not that I'm looking into an iPhone, just curious)
What is the general state on app notifications? Because I've just about had it with the absolute fucking torrent of notifications whenever you install some random app on Android.
You install some random exercise app and the next day it will say "so did you get your exercise you lazy fucker?".
You install some random food recipe app and it immediately tells you to get your luncheon going with over a billion recipes (and probably all bad)7 -
For the room closeness part of my algorithm I changed it to check against a point on the edge of the room. I determined this point by doing a vector intersect with the room geometry. The vector is determined by center to center of the rooms. Not the closest point on the outside of the rooms to each prospective room, but close enough. That is what I am drawing with yellow dots.
I can use these points to approximate door positions and corridor placement. This is for completely random rooms and corridors. However, for predefined rooms with strict entry points I will have to figure out how to connect those doors to other random rooms. Or I just predefine door locations for all rooms.
I dunno the best way at this point. Doing pure random has benefits. Doing predefined rooms has benefits as well. Will probably hack together a mixture of the two.5 -
The biggest lie I regularly encounter is Window's "About x minutes remaining".

for the sake of society and the future of humanity, recommender systems should introduce an element of randomness ... say I view items X and Y, and I am only very slightly inclined to pick Y .. next time the system shows me Y1 and Y2 because I like Y's... I pick Y2 and then it recommends Y21 and Y22 etc. .. never again would I see X, X1, X2, etc. although I might have been interested in checking them out, it's just that I had to pick something
I really think Amazon, Youtube, Netflix etc. shpuld have a "random picks" section .. not bestsellers, not most watched, just random6 -
RavenDB was by far the worst document storage "solution" I have ever had the displeasure of working with.
- Loading data crashed the service.
- Queries crashed the service.
- Monitoring applications crashed the service.

- Sometimes it just worked for no good reason.
- Often it broke for completely random reasons.11 -
I don't get it
why is it that people still use FTP?
Like, in current, fairly recent (2018) projects, for public downloads.
I get that when you're just hosting public files without any authentication you don't need to worry about the unencrypted passwords, but like
the random ports are a shitty and annoying practice and also http exists just let your custom patcher program download the release from github where it's already available21 -
I have this database systems professor who cannot for the life of her teach this class. She goes on random tangents about anything and everything. She asks weird trick questions and gets mad when we don't get them right. She is just very unorganized in general. Her lectures just feel like one long run on sentence. So I guess to make a long story short, anybody have any good resources when it comes to learning about databases?8

I let my monkey brain come up with a reasonable estimate after evaluating what is required. Then i just add in some random amount of time (If my estimate is around 3 days i just randomly say it'll take me 3 days, 3 hours, 21 minutes and 50 seconds). It usually cracks up people during meetings and ends up getting me more time because they like to round it up xD3

Random as fuck, but anyone here that smokes pipe tobacco or enjoys cigars? what about dip tobacco? from my understanding, smokeless tobacco is far different in yurop than it is in the U.S

Windows is such a piece of shit. A couple of months ago I ordered a PC with Windows as an OS (cuz u know games and stuff). Lately it's just throwing random BSODs everytime with a new error message. This is happening not constantly but in a random behaviour. Nevermind ... But now since I switched one of my monitors to a vertical position instead of the traditional horizontal one, Windows just won't want to recognize this monitor. You know what... FUCK WINDOWS! FUCK THIS GAMES! LINUX all the way.3

Why is iOS debugging so fucking useless? Instead of having a normal stack trace which takes you to the line of code that went wrong it just takes you to the bootstrap line in AppDelegate with a random code and basically says "Fuck you, figure it out yourself". Their stack traces are just as useless. IS THIS WHAT SOME PEOPLE CALL THE PREMIERE DEVELOPMENT EXPERIENCE, GODDAMNIT? at least Swift is nice tho, unlike Objective-C4

macOS - just nothing makes sense.
You try to go away from the deprecated stuff, use the new shinier API to stop and start services with launchctl (bootstrap/bootout vs. load/unload). And how does this stellar OS thank you for that? By crashing your service. Thanks for nothing.
From developer perspective this whole OS is just such a nightmarish clusterfuck. If you want to set up code signing with some special entitlements and you try to use the provisioning profiles as advertised, it's like pulling the one-armed bandit. It will plunder your coins and sanity. You try to compile it, it fails or the executable will be killed - you enable and disable the automatic codesigning in Xcode, or delete and download you old code signing cert and suddenly it works. It's just random - and you have to perform random walks on the Xcode project settings to make it run. So Apple turned us into Xcode clicking monkeys... -
Had a list of integers: 0,2,1,0,1,2,2,0. Needed to add a variable number of integers and stay as close as possible the current average.
Used their percentage to solve this. Didnt work. After a few hours I realised it is just to pick a random in the list as many times that I need to add integers.
Say I have 32 integers and need 36, just pick 4 by random, problem solved. Fuck I will never get those hours back... :( -
Just had a random nostalgia moment:
Childhood days playing wolfenstein 3d in the telephone cable modem internet times.
I clearly remember the first cheat code i used in my entire life for that game : ILM
What was your first cheat code and the first game that comes to your mind when talking about your childhood games :)2 -
*sitting on the toilet... random thoughts, then... *
Every imaginable program and beyond that can be made already exists.
They are all just a number in the infinite natural number scale.
*mind... blown... *
Therefore, if we test every number, and try to execute it, we would find Half Life 3... or rather multiple possible versions of it.
*double mind blown... *5 -
was just sitting there, chilling
my Mac suddenly says Google LLC added a background item
not adding it right after I install your browser but rather at a random moment when I least expect it for sure looks shady to me -
Our only PM out 3 weeks on vacation, we are now only developers, our CEO and CTO. None of them have any idea of being a PM - just ask random questions about work, hands the phone to us whenever a customer calls - Generally have clue whats going on. FML!1

The project needs to make bigger changes to a module. A guy starts doing the changes. It turns out that the task is bigger than we though originally. Team lead has a brilliant idea: you need help. So he'll assign couple of more guys to do the same change.
What's the catch? The catch is that we are now all changing the same files. The code is a mess and tweaks and hacks are needed all over the place. So basically one guy changes the files and others just watch YouTube and wait for him to commit. The it's your turn to change the files and the first guy watches PornHub.
You could all just try to edit the same files at the same time, but we all know how GIT feels about that. You change random lines, he changes random lines, someone else changes random lines, all merges go to shit, nothing works and we spend 2x more time on just trying to get it compiling again.2 -
So I just started using the app called Rmabox and it seems pretty useful. Actually I am ranting using the same app. Keeps all my social profiles at one place. But I am concerned about my privacy as well. Is it safe to use such apps which help you to manage all your social accounts at one place? Will that not create a single point of security breach?1

!rant
I was scrolling devrant as we do and spotted something intriguing.
Just beneath the panel where the 'wyd' tag is- is some background text. And it is static. Its the bar of check boxes that allow us to choose a filter (Algo. Recent etc)
Just random noticings.1 -
Am I the only one to get randomly disconnected from the Web version? Also, light theme pops up randomly. Looks like a cookie issue if you ask me, but that's just at random.1

Arrived half an hr too early at an onsen, so now I'm just reading up random stuff regarding design systems.
On another note, I have no idea if I'm able to communicate with the people here 🙃3 -
Received a random complimentary ticket to a tech conference because the marketer said she found my github contribution "impact the open source community direct or indirectly"
Well thank you but they are mostly just school assignments you know...1 -
Ever used Camunda?
Their documentation feels like it was written with GPT-3 and they put random hyperlinks in there. And if they are remotely close to something useful in there they are like: "How about this article about something which sounds about right, but will just reference back to this article, because we want to be like Wikipedia and put hyperlinks everywhere".
Also you will get a brain stack overflow while trying to decipher the 50th layer of the documentation to something, some random guy on the internet could explain to you in two sentences.1 -
Ok why tf are some apps that just generate random number need in app purchase? Bitch please?
You know what, I’m gonna write one, and I’m gonna make it free, tell me what features are needed, what I have in mind is: random number between, random N numbers between, random N numbers between without repetition, random from list with and without repetition, what else? Let me know.6 -
Is there a debug tool in Visual Studio that acts like a global HashMap<String, object> that you can add random objects to so that you can verify which objects are the same instance between breakpoints and view the state of an object that you had access to but is not in scope at a given breakpoint? I'm debugging a GUI app right now and it's an enormous pain in the ass to track identities, I resorted to adding random properties and statics to classes just so I can express this basic ass persistent debugger state6

Grrrrrrr!!!!!!! How you frustrate me SQL SERVER REPORTING SERVICES! Designing a report changed query on dataset to include new field, fields started displaying all sorts of random stuff, booleans in text fields etc. Just spent 20 mins "checking" by rebuilding the first few bits of report and first dataset it's something weird with SSRS. Bye bye Sunday evening!!!

Just discovered my i6600 needed .15v more on the vcore, took 2 months of random untraceable crashes....1

Hey Swift keyboard users, does anybody else's just close randomly? Mainly on devRant though, but most of the time when writing the keyboard will minimise itself or create a random string of words. (it did it twice while writing this)3

Me: GUI team needs help from backend team to add UIDs to a (shitty) object in (their in-house shitty) db.
Backend:
Backend can display these (shitty) objects properly, why can't GUI use the entire object as composite primary key? Backend can't just add some random UID to fix GUI display bug.1 -
We’re only random people living in random places, speaking random languages, eating random food, sleeping, studying and working random hours. Traveling to random points on a sphere.
Just random range is different.
Just random stuff happens on crossroads of two random dots and the entropy speed ups or slows down.
Nothing special at all.
Just a finite state machine iteration.
I mean the amount of effort we put into explanation of infinity is outstanding.
What if there is no infinity at all ?
What if infinity is just misunderstanding of our interpretation of the world around us. It’s just pixels, resolution, gaussian splatting, quantum state, you name it.
Hey man the world is flat. Just put it to the 2d space. How many space you need from a simulation perspective where your patient eyes can only see up to certain amount of light particles per second on a shitty lens.
Propose a world optimization techniques by slowing down subject perception, tiredness introduced. Compress memory, sleep introduced. Limit neurons, cpu power assigned. Deploy on cloud - put it to life. Exit 0 body failure. Exit 1 suicide. Kill -9 killed by tty from ip EARTH.X.Y
What you can do to make the world around this planet alive? Make it blink.
We developers are lazy and I believe that nature is even more lazy than us.
You think you’re going to elevator right now ? You’re going to the preloader. Looking at the window equals playing video from playback. Never goes live, just precomputed fsm. Cars, trains, airplains ? Preloaders everywhere. Highways to split traffic to cities and communication. The road and cities planning department is a matrix maintenance department. And don’t get me started about space.
Space is empty because it’s not even finished. So they put it all behind glass called milky way. You know how glass looked 500 years ago ? It was milky so it’s milky way so we don’t see shit.
If the space would be finished I’ll be starting writing this text from mars, finished it and sent from earth but no it’s light years guys, light years is not a second for a matter. Light year is a second of the the injected thoughts exchange only. Thoughts of the global computer called generative AI that they introduced on local computing devices called cloud.
Even the preloader system is not present, they left us with the one map and overpopulated demo. What a shit hole.I bet they’re increasing temperature right now to erase this alpha build and cash out. Obviously so many bugs here that his one can’t be fixed anymore. To many viruses.
Hope for 0days to start happening so we can escape using time travel or something.
I bet they cut a budget or something, moved the team to other projects. Or even worse solar system team got layoff off because we are just neurons that ordered to do it. And now we’re stuck in some maintenance mode, no new physics no new thoughts to pursue, just slow degeneration. I would pay more for the next run and switch to other galaxy far far away where they at lest have more modern light speed technology.
What do you think about it Trinity ? Not even worth wasting your time for that. No white rabbit this time.
I do not recommend this game at this stage of early access.
- only one available map despite promises for expansions over the years no single dlc arrived,
- missing space adventures
- no galaxy travel mode only a teaser trailers of what you can do in other “universes”
- developers don’t respond to complains
- despite diversity of species and buildings at first sight world looks to generic
- instead of new features bots with mind manipulation, AB testing and data harvesting was introduced
- death anti cheat mode installed1 -
Lol. Another day, another (or just the usual) big tech company just takes us from behind.
This time? Oh Google is just spamming me because they "found malware" on a tracking code. There's nothing. Except competition.
They had to email me about every "malware" in EVERY fucking workspace version. In random order, eventually effecting the live version. Thanks. I really needed those 30 emails to know. -
Sometimes I just feel like voice chatting/chatting with some random folks but I can't ever find a forum to do it3

Does anyone else have a whole vm with random tools all-possible games like pacman4console or bastet? Or is it just me.
-
It's almost all the time but specially when there is a stupid bug i find out in production after all the efford i put on testing before release, or even worst, when the bug is not stupid, is random and just hard to tell why the fuck everything is fucked up
-
Is it just me or does everyone's earphone/headphone wire get caught on any damned thing exactly when your favourite part of a song is about to play
Like say I see fire's chorus might be coming up and a random amoeba might crawl along and my earphones would even get caught up on the little dude.
It's just sorcery -
I want to run a simulation like rolling a dice N times and find out what's the distribution/probability of getting certain SUMs after the rolls.
However the dice is more likely to land on a lower number, and/or depends on what the number it landed on previously.
Stats wise I think ideally I want to be able to just input the avg, standard deviation, and skewness into a Random class constructor, and then ask it for N "random" numbers.6
