Sorry, I just had to post this cable porn I found posted in some random subreddit.
Just look at those curves12 -
I just overheard a conversation in my uni and I'm horrified.
They want to use Comic Sans as the main font in the app they're going to develop
I hope I just imagined this3 -
In networking class today:
Student - "But this is just in theory, how does it work in practice?"
Lecturer - "In theory, theory and practice are the same thing."15 -
"Sure ill join the meeting it's not like I'm busy with the project's deadline being this Friday and all"
My notes from the meeting:8 -
I have just realized the music that was playing in my headphones stopped a long time ago and I've just been sitting here in silence with my headphones on listening to absolutely nothing.6

Alright people, I'm gonna be blunt here, which is something not often seen from me. Thankfully this platform is used to it.
I am absolutely sick of people hating Windows/MacOS just because of the fucking practices of the companies. Let's take a look at a pro/con list of each OS type respectively.
Windows:
Pro - Most computers built for it
Pro - Average consumer friendly
Pro - Most games made for it
------------------------------------------
Con - Proprietary
Con - Shady info collection (disableable)
Con - Can take some work to customize
~
Linux:
Pro - Open source
Pro - Hundreds of versions/distros
Pro - Incredibly customizable on all fronts
------------------------------------------
Con - Can have limited modern hardware support
Con - The good stuff has a steep learning curve
Con - Tends to have unoptimized programs or semi-failed copies of Windows programs
~
MacOS:
Pro - Actually quite secure in general
Pro - Optimized to all hell (on Apple devices)
Pro - Usually just works
------------------------------------------
Con - Only (legally) usable on Apple devices
Con - Proprietary
Con - Locked down customization
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
See? None of them are perfect. Fucking get over it already. Maybe I want to use Windows because it works for me, and it actually does what I need it to. I can disable the spying shit through a few nice programs. Just because I work in IT doesn't mean that I HAVE to hate Windows and LOVE Linux! I mean, Linux is absolutely SPECTACULAR for all of my servers, but as a Desktop OS? Not there for me yet. Check one of my other rants: https://devrant.com/rants/928935/... and you'll see a lot of my gripes with Linux that Windows actually executes well. FUCK!38 -
Shouldn't be necessary if you just write understandable code xD..... Some people just write stories in between 2 lines of code....15
-
If I had a dollar every time a non software engineer used the word "just" in a sentence...
"Just" convert this Matlab code to C++
"Just" make it faster
"Just" have it done in a week8 -
My girlfriend this morning: "You're just over there on devRant, and I'm in here making you breakfast in my underwear.. What the hell is on devRant that's so important?"
Me: "I'll be in in just a minute, hold on......"7 -
Code isn't just something that you can just learn in three months. Stop the clickbait articles plz.6
Hey fellow selfish Millenials who want to be paid for their valuable work, how's the job hunting going?
I'm a few days into hunting for some interesting part time work and I'm already encountering some real gems... Pinnacle of irony with this one.
Anyone got some horrific tales to share? This is a safe space for your anguish to finally be released, I promise.15 -
3 off the most dreadful things to do as a developer
1) Documentation
2) Testing (Multiple device/browser)
3) Wearing formal clothes7 -
Found this in a legacy codebase at work. Can't imagine what the coder was thinking. "Just in case"?5
Cutting corners just creates two new corners.
Likewise, cutting corners in code just creates more bugs.3 -
Java in 2000: Just to be clear, JavaScript is not my kid
Java in 2020: Just to be clear, JavaScript is not my dad4 -
Our PM is on vacation. And our CTO/CEO takes control of the PM role.
So today he decided it was time to just start a customer change request. Regardless of the customer not having approved the actual solution and estimate.
He just said that he did not want to waste any more time talking to the customer. Now they are gonna get what ever he thinks they want.
I predict this to backfire in a fabulous way. What could possible go wrong🤔4 -
I'm so weary of JS right now but every time i want to code something in another language i just think:
"Why don't i just do this in JS. Would be much easier."
Please help me.13 -
Just finished making the interface for my app in WPF only to find out that it will be waaay harder to plug it to WPF than I thought.
In fact, it would be easier to just remake it from scratch in WPF - which I'm planning on doing when I get some free time.
Don't you just hate when that happens?
..eh, at least it looks somewhat good.8 -
Our nurse at the hospital, along with the most annoying people I've ever known, says, "knock knock" out loud when she enters the room.3
Working in Big Tech is just like working in stupid factories in the 1800. You are disposable and not worth anything.
-
Ex-Machina just blew my mind!!! Anybody interested in AI please give it a watch. It's just awesome. 😁9
my boss sent us an email saying that we have to send him a summary of our work everyday and how much time we invested on the job because sometimes we work at home and he won't know if we really worked.
--------today-------
me: *sleeps for 4 hrs*
me: *configures apache in amazon linux real quick*
me: i worked for 4 hours blah blah and i fixed the apache configurations blah and i coded in js and php for the datatables thing blah blah *sends email*
boss: nice work! have a great weekend.
now thats how you do it when u procrastinate a lot!9 -
Having an philosophy exam in less than six hours. It's 2 am. Laying in bed, thinking about that stupid DNS bug and how to fix it. I have 4 1/2 hours of sleep left - wish me luck ¯\_(ツ)_/¯4
-
In the middle of a project, the word "just" is an offensive four letter word.
Can we JUST make this small change?
JUST slip that feature in here.
I'm sure you can think of some more.6 -
At this day, July 18 in Eastern timezones, one of the globally recognized animation studios in Japan, Kyoto Animation - more known as KyoAni, has been deliberately burned by an arsonist, and has claimed 20 lives and counting.
Please give a moment of silence for the fallen in KyoAni. All they wanted was to make people smile despite the low wage situation and Japan and this happens.8 -
//Random Mr. Robot thought//
So this picture and this quote in general has been in my mind quite recently. The first time I saw this scene it just passed through my mind as just a wierd quirk of elliot. But upon further thinking, I question that given Elliot is someone who specializes in network security in a sense. A part of which focuses on finding exploits in networks or even software in general( basically finding the worst in them). And the more I think about that,the more I come to realisation that just like most programmers mix together logic in their life in dealing with people, this scene stands out as an example of just that happening with Elliot and what perhaps, makes him such a good hacker. Perhaps we could all learn from this, or perhaps I'm just looking too much into this. Eh.4 -
Just got my first callback for a technical interview in JS tomorrow morning.
WOOOOO
*Brain*
"That's cool fam, but you just lost any ability to write anything in it."
Forgot my laptop charger in the hotel, flight leaves in 10 minutes, and my computer is at 2% battery life.
I just need to build this code and push! Will the code be pushed in time? Stay tuned to find out!!
... nah jk it just died. 😧 -
Just overheard somebody discussing about adding in IE8 support for the website. Please no... Just don't.3
Actually I had to take over a project in my company which had a 4 months schedule. And at the time I became the PL it had an expected delay of two months, and two months were spent already! But the thing was: The customer expects results in two months.
Somehow I managed to steer the project into the other direction and we delivered within the expected timeframe with the expected feautures. And everything worked as expected.
Thanks to a wonderful team of 8 people who made this possible for me at that time! -
Boss: oh so you are working on that unrealistic 3week project ? Let me also assign you some completely unrelated office work.
Me: But I'm a programmer, researching other companies and contacting them looking for new projects is not part of my job descrip...
Boss: oh don't worry I'm sure you'll do great!
Me: that's not what I'm sayi...
Boss: ok I have to go now, have it ready by tomorrow!
Me:(crying internally)...ok.6 -
There's this one lead dev in our dpt who keeps posting pictures to our company's Teams 'general' channel with shit in the toilet after someone forgot to either flush or use the brush.
Caption usualy says "I don't mean to cause nausea to anyone, but we are all adults here and should know how to flush / use the toilet brush".
Does every company have this guy or are we the chosen ones?8 -
Everytime I don't sit in front of my code (and go for a walk or something), I immediately find bugs or things to improve from all the code I've written, IN MY HEAD. If you have a hard time finding bugs, try this, maybe. Might help.3
-
dates are just an index of time
practicing is just offsetting your initial, natural ability in a positive direction
do you guys ever just think of things in an abstract sense?
what are other examples?16 -
I wanted to see what would happen if I let a computer type for me.
It was able to reach 770 WPM but then my browser started to crash. So this is the best I could do. It doesn't look like the website was equipped for robots. Oops3 -
I created this Pet lost and found app (only available in my country for now) , written in Flutter (client side), elixir (backend), MySql (dB).
Just a small project for a charity organizations.
Just in case the gif is not moving https://youtu.be/oO5Q7xS7rOQ3 -
Don't you just hate filling a sign-up form which is validated to such an extent that it even requires everything to be entered in capitals. UGH! JUST CONVERT TO CAPS IN YOUR BACKEND FOR GODS SAKE!!!1
-
Git for Windows just dropped me in vim to edit my commit message and I genuinely had to Google how to save and exit...
I guessed right, but I had to check just in case 😐1 -
A couple of weeks ago I went to an interview where I was asked the following questions back to back: "What would you do if you were the prime minister?" && "What would you do if you were the attorney general of the United Nations".
Needless to say, I wasn't prepared for that...5 -
I work in marketing just as much as in development, so this is relevant. Fill in your own captions for your own situation.
-
Who codes while laying in bed? 🤨 Just saw a random coding video and the guy was just laying in bed with facecam.
I'm tempted to get a laptop just to try it and achieve my final form.31 -
I just remembered a weird fix in a bug, some old developer hide the error message using css, placing it in a div then just used display none. LOL4
TIL: Outlook now supports reactions to mails in the form of icons. Think: like/smile/cry/heart/etc.
Just like reactions to messages in any given chat application.
Don't get me wrong, I like and welcome this feature. It's just surprising to see this in... mail.12 -
Just realized I needed to finish to write my activity report in just less than a month.
Just stopped my WoW subscription.
😥😥2 -
The network guy in me screams in agony!
I Just started watching person of interest, and this happens...8 -
The Windows update task scheduler: "I'll make 19 very very important, 20 very important, 12 important, 0 really important and 400 optional updates. And when you are currently at a meeting in the next room, I'll gonna restart in 15 minutes and make 451 updates, when you want to show the demo. "
I love the first weeks after a job change. It's just like falling in love, everything seems to be perfect until you take off the pink glasses.
Have to wait until I'm assigned a burning project to have a full picture.
Actually I am in a burning project. Deadline in 2 weeks. Doing Bugfixes which do not require in-depth project knowledge, and... It's fine. All a matter of perspective. I also think that project based work suits me more than usual 15y old legacy enterprise shit. And I'm able to switch. From embedded C++ over hardware dev to fullstack .NET (I consider myself as a full-fullstack dev, able to do everything from hardware to frontend).
Topics such as IOT, medical, device engineering, machine learning. Wow.
It's my first company having >50 employees and multiple offices in multiple countries. I used to jump every 2 years from one shitty garage company to another.
Wish me good luck ✌️2 -
I'm unmotivated and tired today. I'm just running tests in different branches to see what bug I can find... and since the testing take 5 minutes to complete, I just watch videos in between...9
-
Just got rejected for BS reasons after handing in an assignment. Just tell me you found someone better, it's not a crime.14
-
Just curious.
1. How you hosting at deep web?
2. Can your websites become listed in deep web? Why?
I just curious12 -
Just got this popup again, and it always comes right in the middle of me doing something. And of course there's no "remind me in an hour" - if you select "Try in an hour" it usually just automatically installs and restarts your computer in an hour, instead of asking you again.2
-
I actually forced myself to write documentation for my current project. So I have spend hours writing guides and stitching together guides I've found all around the web 😐 On the other hand, now I'll be capable of re-setting up the server in about 30 to 45 minutes 🙃3
-
This morning I just discovered all our repos are visible to everyone in the company... Not just the team that created them...
We store passwords and certs in our repos....25 -
The GIL sucks.
"Just use a non-GIL implementation!"
Which? The one stuck on 3.4 or the one stuck on 2.7?
"Just use multiprocessing!"
Just hit a nail in with a pile driver!14 -
Today I went ALL IN
And also brought 3 lotto tickets
I just want financial freedom but the bills are just do expensive....11 -
Just in time for my Spartian score ~
This just popped up in my mind since I saw this post in the week :
Do you ever code in your free time ? And do you use your applications ? Or propose them publicly ?8 -
Now that I am on vacation I realise that there was a period of 3 months this year in which I didn't talk to any female at all except for my mom and sister, just because there are almosy no girls that study software engineering... What the fuck is happening here? Could we please make SE more attractive for women? Its not just that I would like to flirt with women, I think that having women around would improve a great deal of things. For instance, I think that a group dynamic is a lot better if the group contains women.
How do you think we can make software development more appealing to women?6 -
In the midst of all this I-hate-Apple fallout, I really just wanna rant because the default computer in the avatar builder is an Apple mock. Just saying 😂😂😂5
Just installed Linux again after the installation finished because I somehow got a typo in the password I set in the beginningof the installation.
It was just quicker than to try hacking around this problem.3 -
Colleague just factory reset the firewall....
- "I have just changed a firewall rule"
Motherfucker!!!!! Burn, burn in hell! -
Just decided to go "all in" on Amazon but then see this... (See previous rant)
Maybe I should just go half in? (3 shares)14 -
I honestly hate dealing with promises in JavaScript. Asking permissions just to autoplay a video just like the client requested.6
-
Yeeah it's official, the N key in my HP keyboard just fucked up
What the solution?
Ok I'll use all the #Widgets that has no N in it's definition in my code
Just fuck that sit.7 -
Had a manager that, during performance reviews, would say things like:
"You need to work harder on managing our clients' warm fuzzies."
"I can't give you a hard number to strive for on this metric here because you'll just do the minimum"
Needless to say, the turnover in that group was insanely high. -
Sometimes I put my earbuds in and don't even listen to anything just so people will leave me alone and not involve me in idle "chit chat"... and some people just don't give a fuck. 😑
-
In my class, we had just finished learning php and our final project involved using everything we learned... it was due in just 3 days... we only saw php for 2 days...
-
I'm not a server-man, I mostly just develop apps in unity and similar stuff.
Boss: yo, can you make this work? I just can't understand https://github.com/ant-media/...
Me: Well IDK, there's a "start.sh" in it, just give it a try
*error*: /usr/local/antmedia cannot be found
Me: well then just put the whole thing in it.
*everything works flawlessly*
did you do magic? -
I've never rejected a pull request, I just out in loads of comments with constructive criticism.
When shoukd you reject and when should you just sdd in comments?7 -
Just got an email from Apple about their announcement yesterday. Just in case you have been living under a rock or something...
-
The secret to cross-browser compatibility is just wrapping every single element in an extra div, just for good measure.10
-
Just firing up a new war which will be just as important in a few decades (if not today already) like Vim&Emacs.
So: Do you use 'string' or "string" in languages like JS, Python, ...?8 -
I am unlucky, because electricity in my area just goes down just before I hit the cltr+s....
I am unlucky, because the last person get the product before is goes out of stock is the person just standing in front my me in queue.....
I am unlucky, because my water tank run out of water not just before I go to bath but in the middle of my bath.....
But Still I think I am lucky because I can loop in one line in python, and the nested loop also.......2 -
One day (maybe) I will understand how the "bestest IDE in the world" (cit.) can consume over 10Gb of memory just... for being open while not editing any file or anything.
Just in case you're wondering I'm talking about VsCode and yes I know it's not an IDE just in case you want to point out :-) It's just I see more and more people referring to it as it was one.11 -
cleaning up resources in async tests in rust is... uhhh what the fuck honestly
just wat
wat
just forget about it I guess. ew.1 -
Sometimes while in my office I just want to scream! Not out of frustration, but just to wake myself up to get motivated to start my work for the day. Is it just just me?1
-
Politics. Dealing with people, making sure you check in with everyone at all times, making sure you don't seem harsh in code reviews. It's all just too fucking complicated. Just let me build shit.
-
Here is my problem. The team I'm on has developers from other areas that were "put" into a new team. Two use "structured programming" but the requirements make me think we need "domain driven design". How in the world can I get them to evolve into another mindset while still meeting the deadline?1
-
Any string-related operations in ansible are just pure pain in the ass
Anything related about vars in ansible is just pure pain in the ass.
Fuck ansible I rather to write this automation in JS...2 -
Is anyone frustrated with typescript or am I just doing it wrong? Like the types are never matched. Drill down the types in every prop. It just seems very extra.
Newbie in TS2 -
I was working in my windows VM in class, just typing some C# code, when suddenly... "Updates are being installed".
Without notice, it just shut down while I was typing stuff. How??5 -
Rejection #countless just got in. I just just profile myself as the technical wonder before i ever get hired again.
They want me to document Nifi flows.... In a spreadsheet
Like... Just...
Abd the existing format is just awful1 -
Is it just me or is android development just a pain in the ass? Ive done universal windows development before and it was great, but android just seems like a mess to me2
-
Feature request: pasting in images!
In current android version we cannot add jifs from our keyboards, or paste in the screenshot we just took.
Downloading every reaction/meme gif is lamer than just letting your keyboard do it. Anyway, it could be useful or not idk lol7 -
Wanacry didn't touch me yet, my gaming machine is on Windows, I disabled the update service, I haven't restarted it for 2 months now...
Now doing an update, just in case
My laptop is dual booted with antergos, my work files are all on onedrive, so if something happened to my laptop it wouldn't be the worst
Still disabling the update service after the update :P13 -
Is academia just a display of how well you can be a good cog in a system? I feel like I've done more admin work than development just to pass. Too far in to quit though.1
-
That second when you scan the stack trace, spot the line in error and just think to yourself "wtf just happened"
Is it just me who finds coding so relaxing? In all the messy crap flying around it's just me and code..my precious!
