Website design philosophies:
Apple: "...and a really big picture there, and a really big picture there, and a really big picture there, and..."
Microsoft: "border-radius:0 !important;"
Google: "EVERYTHING MOVES!!! And most websites get material design. Most."
Amazon: "We're slowly moving away from 2009"
Wix: "How can we further increase load times?"
Literally any download site: "Click here! No, click here! Nononono!! Click here!!..."
Facebook: "We can't change anything because our main age demographic is around 55"
University websites: "That information isn't hard enough to find yet. Decrease the search accuracy and increase broken links."32 -
My last night:
- Had nothing much to work on.
- Opened a porn site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good video.
- Realized full screen isn't working on the page.
- Fired up JS console, spent the next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.
Bad UI = No Fuck.23 -
Today my classmate came up to me and said he was a hacker.
I told him to prove it, and guess what? HE ACTUALLY HACKED GOOGLE!
It was amazing! He impressed so many kids in the class with his skills of pressing F12! How impressive is that?
He even wore a black hoodie and can spell his name in binary code. Not to mention, he changed google doc's page color to black and the font to green as he typed his essay.
I need to be careful... This 1337 h4x0r is really scary.

New Dutch (or european?) law requiring https for any website with a contact form or higher is going into effect very soon. Were contacting customers so they can still be on time with this, this is how most convo's go:
Collegue: *explains*
Client: Im sure my security is good enough...
Collegue: i'd really recommend it, we've got free options as well!
Client: its just a secure connection, whats the big deal...
Collegue: *more arguments*
Client: I just don't see the point, security.... well.... does it really matter that much...
Collegue: Google might place you lower in the search results if you don't get a secure connection.
Client: 😶😥😵 uhm so what were the https options again? 😅
I hope they all die a painful death 😠26 -
Apple has Air
Amazon has Fire
Google has Earth
Microsoft should really create something called Water27 -
Google: this sha-1 collision is really gonna fuck up the internet more than anything else today

How do i learn coding in single night? - someone asked me.
I gently replied : Pack your Laptop, and travel to North Pole in beginning of winter, you'll have 6 month of night to learn coding.
Once there - really just Google it there are tons of Excellent tutorials on web.6 -
Google searches resulting in Github issues instead of StackOverflow questions is how you know you are really screwed.4
-
When someone explains to me that they really care about their privacy and use WhatsApp or signal or other encrypted messaging services and then you see then typing stuff through the GOOGLE KEYBOARD.
Yeah i think they're not understanding something 😆52 -
One day, someone at Google decided that what their search engine was really missing was a dice rolling tool, complete with text that says 'Rolling...'
Stocks are up 600% since then.10 -
Want to Google io earlier this month and a senior director at Google game a presentation and used a chrome dino for a demo and after I found him on LinkedIn and asked her m where I could buy one and he asked for my address and sent me one for free. Idc what any of you say Google is really cool for doing this.14
-
For some reason my tech enthusiast mind gets really enthusiastic about the fact the Google calendar icon is now based on what date it actually is.25
-
I woke up nicely, made my coffee and breakfast, got into coding mood, really motivated.
"Huh, how am I supposed to do this... Let's Google. Ah, StackOverflow has the perfect solution to my problem."
*clicks link*
*irritated internal scream*
Noooooooo!6 -
so I called dell to ask a question about a laptop. after navigating their anoying automated system, I get a guy who can barely speak english. I ask my question which he didnt understand until I asked 4 more times. he finally understands and says "please hold on while I search. 10 minutes go by and I ask if he's still there. he says "yes, hold on" I finally ask how his search is going after another 5 minutes. he says "I couldn't find anything on google regarding your question... really dude!?!? I already searched google and came up with nothing helpfull. you're Dell and this is a Dell product. know your shit!7

Girlfriend (she has little idea of tech) was asking if I could fix her notebooks wifi.
I didn't answer that for a week.
Yesterday she really needed wifi, so she went to google and followed several posts - until she managed find the problem and to reinstall her wifi driver for the first time! She was so proud of herself.
I hope I'll never forget that grin of her - full of triumph!
I couldn't be more proud of her myself9 -
So I heard (a while ago) from one of my teachers at my previous study that they're waiting for the new european data protection laws to kick in so that they'll be able to start using Google for everything.
That would mean that every student is required to have a (school/school domain though) Google account.
"The data will remain in this country"
Yeah fuck off I'm not going to believe google on it's 'blue eyes'.
It's sad how an educational institution can force their students into a mass surveillance network. Really makes me angry as hell.
Luckily I got out before they're going to implement this.24 -
Trend of the day:
1. Facebook is really compromising user privacy, will delete my account!
2. Post about deleting Fb account to twitter, instagram, etc
3. "Ok google, what is privacy?"
4. Find a random app in play store and allow access regardless20 -
When i said that i use Linux, 3/4 of the class stared at me like i have a mental problem.
Then i said that i use duckduckgo and they stared at me like i was really retarded.
The sad part is that i'm in computer science department and my colleagues have not any clue about anything else than microsoft/google.11 -
I really fucking hate when people or companies do shit like this..
Apparently Google is changing the salad emoji, which is a bowl that contains lettuce, tomato, egg, onion and stuff like that, to the same, but without the egg.
Why you may ask?
Well.. they did it to "make it a more inclusive vegan salad".
ITS JUST SOME WHITE PIXELS FOR FUCKS SAKE. How would any vegan, besides the crazy ones, be upset about a moist egg in their crisp salad?
I cant even.. im out of words.. fuck.
Additionally, the news page i read it on have been so kind to host a poll of what people think about it, whether its a good idea or not.
Ill let the image speak for itself, if you really need a translation, dont use google translate, ask in the comments.42 -
Google is not even hiding their efforts in controlling the internet and holding sites for ransom:
https://theverge.com/2019/11/...
They will happily put a "badge of shame" on slow loading sites and I think this is just to force more sites to use AMP.
Fuck google. and I mean it. Firefox really is the last "FREE" browser available for us who care about this shit.
on the other hand, I hate the whole "Modern Web" shit. So if what google is doing will take it down then by all means, go fuck it up google.18 -
I've recently red a blog post stating 'Google leaves x Million Android devices vulnerable to a new Exploit'
I don't really sympathize with Google, but it's simply the wrong message... It should be more like FUCK VENDORS, WHO WON'T SUPPLY UPDATES TO DEVICES OLDER THAN 1.5 YEARS
Seriously, it's them who make you stuck on outdated OS versions... Just imagine you could only install Windows Vista on your 2014 Lenovo ThinkPad, because it's considered outdated...
FUCK VENDORS (again, just in case)8 -
Project Cortana: Day 1
I have seen a lot of people switching to Linux or other services to get away from all the data collections. It makes a lot of sense as no one would want their data to be sold without their consent.
But I am going to do something different. My aim is to integrate with Microsoft apps as much as possible and review the experience. So here is what I have done so far:
* Use Cortana in desktop and mobile (Android)
* Use Microsoft launcher in mobile
* Outlook as primary email provider (I was already using them as my default provider)
* Use Microsoft To-Do and calendar to keep track of things
* Use OneDrive to store all my files (I am moving them from Google Drive)
* Use the default Mail app on the Windows 10
* Use Onenote (I was using Evernote before)
* Use Edge on desktop and Mobile
* Use Skype instead of Hangouts
It's day one but I think I have already found it quite useful. For example:
* Adding reminder is much easier. I get them on both desktop and mobile which is nice.
* Mail app has been really useful. Especially the focused inbox really helps to get rid of the clutters. Also, I can immediately add a mail to the calendar (like Inbox by Google) which is really helpful.
* One of the features of edge that I have found really useful is that you can send web pages from mobile to desktop in one tap. That is extremely useful.
So far I am loving it.
Also, I tried to make sure that I am not sharing my data with third-party apps as I have turned off "relevant ads" feature.43 -
Me to my family :
Family: so this printer not working

Family: no, can you do it?
Me: i could travel 1 hour or you can just google and download it, its really quite simp--
Family: yeah this is to complicated for me il need you to come over10 -
Most of the tech YouTubers are really noob engineers.
Joma was a data scientist. He is an L3 engineer at Google and he hasn't done much during the last 1 year based on his internal stats.
I saw tech leads stats while he was at Google and that dude did nothing during his time. I'm sure he was an IC before he became a lead.
Clement talks about system design bull shit but he's a math major who worked on some angular front end while he was at Google. Basically his experience in tech is mostly involving using mat-button and mat-input. He also quit FB in a month.
Listening to tech lead gives me cancer. That guy was also some front end/ mobile engineer. I don't think any less of mobile engineers but tech leads acts as if he built some large scale systems at Google and FB. His opinion about react native shows how much of a noob he is. He also talked about docker in one of his video which showed he had some fundamental misunderstanding of what docker is. In his courses, he struggles to explain simple algorithms.
I don't know how these people have the courage to claim themselves as some sort of experts in the field when they are extreme noobs. They also sell some shady courses and are robbing innocent college kids.
One thing they all do well is talk. Which I give them 10/10.10 -
I was getting tired of this guy asking me about really simple things, so when he asked me how to change the email signature I taught him how to google it. He unironically thanked me.3
-
So I'm moving to a new/bigger place with faster Internet soon so I think it's time to rebuild my current home/remote server setup.
I want to setup the following things:
- vps for server monitoring (open source pushover alternative + netdata)
- Zero tier network for connecting all my servers to the same network
- pihole/pivpn (or the Angristan vpn installer, look it up :)
- second blocking thingy next to pihole to make sure that I literally can't access google/fb etc anymore, even if I really needed/wanted to
- bunch of general servers.
Any ideas?20 -
When your primary Android app (with over 1/2 million total downloads) gets banned...
And all the email says is read these [links to] policies!
Back story: this happened to me back in 2011, no matter what I did there was no way to get in touch with a human at Google, I sure hope this process has gotten better! Having my app suspended with no way to fix and get it back is ridiculous!! This could ruin a business.
Over two years later, on a Google+ hangout with Google Android devs out of the Google London office, I said to them how silly it is that this happened....one of them asked me for the app ID, I provided, he looked it up in a system which then had a reference code which then related to SEO violation....wow I finally found the answer, how silly that an SEO violation (too many keywords in the app description) can get your app permanently suspended. What a shame. I wouldn't wish this on any solo developer trying to self learn and make something...
Sometimes I really just have to say "Fuck you, Google" out loud a few times.9 -
Algorithms strike again :D
By the way I really much agree on both rants. People asking questions that they not even once typed into Google. Disturbing my workflow every 5 minutes...1 -
Recruiter: What is Go?
Me: It's a newish programming language developed by some really cool guys at Google with C-like syntax and great concurrency support.
Recruiter: So it's like Google's version of RESTful?
Me: Umm…8 -
Why do so many people refer to Firefox as "Mozilla"? But never refer to Chrome as "Google" or IE as "Microsoft" or...? That really irks me :/8
-
I hate when I'm trynna Google something, but I don't really know what it is... So I don't know how to phrase it...6
-
Google, really?
I created all content by myself, all images, textes everything is made by me. And now I strike copyright rules?!?
Shut up google._.6 -
I bet this guy feels real fuckin helpful, editing not only the question, but literally every answer in the entire thread. His contributions include:
Capitalizing names.
Adding italics to links (Really, he took the time and clicked "edit" just to do that to an answer)
Adding the word "The"
The fact that people spend their time religiously doing this makes my head spin.
Also aren't these edits bad? the title should be in google speak (i.e. short and broken English) so that they can be found from a search engine. I'm sure SO has some rules about the title or something, but I feel like it would be better in google speak.13 -
Whenever I Google Ajax it gives me search results related to the Amsterdam soccer team called ajax. I mean really Google, I search for webdev related stuff all day and you give me this...7

After one year of learning to code I am still not sure if I am an adequate programmer or a really effective Google user...5

My friend told me stories about his colleague who's always against him.
One time, during their management meeting, that colleague suggested that they should have a suggestion box in the office.
So my friend proposed that they use Google forms. He presented how Google forms work and the majority got really impressed(except the colleague).
Naturally the colleague is against him, he said "this is not what I had in mind". He wanted to have an actual box and people write suggestions on paper and drop it in(suggesting the ancient way).
Every meeting, the colleague complains a lot, and my friend provides techy and convenient solutions.7 -
I work for Google and Facebook.
Well... is that really true?
Uh... well, does a cow work for a farmer?
Hmmm... not really voluntarily... the cow just kinda gets milked and then the farmer sells its milk.
Yeah. That’s what I do. They milk me for my attention - and then they sell that to corporate advertisers.
Yeah... Hmmm... well, I guess you do work for them... but you don’t get paid...
I can still put it on my resume though, right?10 -

Hey guys I posted back in October that I was starting a hobby that I've always wanted to do making programming related videos and tutorials with a lofty goal of hitting 20 subs by end of the year and you all blew that goal in 24hrs! That sudden support really excited me to do more and I want to say thank you!
Now that it is released l really wanted to make a tutorial over the new Google Assistant API and it is now officially released this month. I'm hoping to make a multi-part series over developing for the assistant and Google home plat form. I'd really appreciate your support and feedback on how I can improve my channel and possible video topics you would might like to see.

Thank you for your support DevRanters as always!8 -
Just spent hours, debugging why a system is creating two objects in the database when trying to create one.
Turns out it is Chrome re-sending a POST request.
Really.
What. The. Actual. Fuck. Google.10 -
Not letting Google (overtly) use your data has its drawbacks.
For example, lately I've been getting senior dating ads in my Gmail app.
I mean really, Google, I know you know I'm 30 and married; who's kidding who?1 -
So...is Android O really being called Oatmeal Cookie?
That's two sub par "dessert" in a row.
Step up your game Google!
That being said it should be a great update to the OS. 😀23 -

Lead-Dev: I got a little job for you; put this list of links in the footer of our website.
Me: But... this list of links is a bunch of websites of another company...
why would that go in OUR footer?
LD: Well, Google gives a higher SEO score when two websites have links to one another.
Me: Oh, okay.
LD: Just make the list as subtle as possible. Visitors aren't really supposed to click on them.
Me under my breath: (How are these people allowed to call themselves professionals?)2 -
Story of my life when I am really interested in a company:
Company: let's have a call to get to know each other.
Me: okay.
Company during the call: takes a technical interview
Company *a few days later*: now let's have a technical call!
Me: okay
Company during call: asks to design GOOGLE in GOOGLE DOC (??!!?!)
Company *a few days later*: now let's have a Development Test!
Me: okay
Company *sends an email* asking to complete a task which should take a week to develop in a few hours
Me: okay...
Company *a few weeks later*: Sends a generic email saying they got another person who is a better fit.
Me: ffs..16 -
So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22 -
Anti Rant: Is it just me or are Google Play app updates rolling out really fast... Like i have published some updates recently and they have been live in under 10 mins.
Looks like Google got their act together!10 -
I've been swapping through a couple of ROM's recently for my Nexus 6P but I don't really like any of them a whole lot.. so I've been thinking to build my own from source. However I'd also like to discard Google while I'm at it, and instead go with F-droid, DuckDuckGo, and AOSP keyboard. The problem is that I currently don't see any viable alternatives to the following: Google Assistant, Google Play Services (particularly in-app purchases like those for devRant), Google Maps and Google Calendar. Which alternatives would you recommend, and which are you perhaps using yourself as alternatives? Thanks!8
-
I really like how Opera Mini says it has an AdBlocker implemented, yet the app 'Contains Ads' according to Google. Guess it's not an effective blocker.8
-
Are developers working at Google really this incompetent?
Seriously, during the years I've been working deeply and for long time with many software products developed by Google, like the Android SDK or TensorFlow for instance, I can't find a single feature in them that isn't foundamentally wrong and badly designed starting form the basis, clearly due to an evident lack of the most basic programming knowledges... Am I missing something? Are they secretly making anyone out there think they are dumb on purpose for some occult reason? Or is it truly a dumbness matter? I don't understand.. :(15 -
Why has "privacy minded" people fallen for the illusion that Signal is good?
- It is centralized, which means you can't have control
- It uses google play services
- Using third party servers to send gifs
- The apk has flaws
- There is a reason F-Droid dont want it in its repo
I really can't wrap my head around why "privacy minded" people would embrace it.22 -
Friend: Networking is important. My boyfriend introduced me to X, who then introduced me to Y and that's how I got a job.
Later that day...
Friend: Why didn't you apply for this party? What did I say about networking?
Me: Because I didn't know and because I don't follow that guy on twitter so I didn't see he tweet the google forms.
In my mind: How come nobody introduces me to anybody?
I was just mad that this happened and had to get this out of my head. Nobody ever introduces me to anybody and I am really really shy and an introvert, so I almost never introduce myself to anybody. Clearly I'm gonna die homeless or have a shitty job. Hey artists, I'll gladly take that fucking exposure!10 -
"THIS PAGE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION."
- local webdesigner in my neighbor city - for over a year now. They must be slower than me or plan a page that is complexer than the apple site.
Do I actually need this shit? I mean: really. Why?
If you relaunch, just leave your old one up. If you buy an domain and have nothing on it (and no google index) - who even bothers seeing this shit?
Correct me if I'm wrong.5 -
This is really creepy. Yesterday I was talking to my parents about buying a Thermosteel flask. Today I opened Amazon and this is what I see.. (attached pic)
I am pretty sure, I didn't looked for it even on Google.
It may be co-incidence but still..20 -
Really thought Facebook changed the messenger icon. This smells of spam and paid reviews. I thought Google was working on trying to combat obvious name conflicts and spam.5
-
Had an online programming interview for a start-up, writing code into a shared Google doc while on the phone with the interviewer.
Specifically told that I could just use pseudocode, so I did, without worrying about access modifiers, full variable declarations and use of "new" for making objects, or specific type declarations, etc.
Got told at the end that I "lack experience, and really should have defined access modifiers, declared types, and so on, and that they needed someone proficient in Java. That was the first time I knew about their Java requirement.5 -
Being a self taught programmer ( self teaching? don't know the continuous form :P) , I get really frustrated when my friends encounter a problem and just give up , I mean come on , Google it , ask on SO , ughhhhhhhh7
-
I've really tried with DuckDuckGo, but any time I have to look something up quickly, I default to Google. Their search is just better.9
-
So if I understood it correctly...
Google rolled out YT-Dark for quite some time now FOR IOS(!!!)
And Android doesn't really have it? Random users get random popups asking if they wanns switch to dark but there's no official dark theme?
(Seriously:) WHAT THE FUCK?!
No wonder everyone switches to other services7 -
So Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and many others just gave $50mil (each) for CS education in USA. The program is intended to help minorities and kids in highschool learn coding.
That's pretty awesome. Say what you will about these companies but they do some really great things sometimes.
Also, Ivanka Trump was helping this along. I'm not a fan of the trump administration but still, that's awesome!7 -
If you haven't read the app reviews of ARCore by Google on the PlayStore yet, you're really missing out1
-
Hi.. Recently I began my career in IT firm but my work doesn't involve coding.
But I really aspire to become an programmer. I have been always searching playstore for apps related to programming.
Google play suggested me devRant. I installed it and found that it is the right place for me.
I hope you guys will be helpful and kind.
Thanks Guys !!!5 -
Dear intern, if you really really have the urge to use fucking spaces for indentation because it let's you feel like being some Google hipster, then PLEASE AT LEAST REMOVE THE SPARE ONES WHEN YOU FUCKING COPY PASTE CODEBLOCKS!!!1!!1111!
I'm perfectly OK if people wanna use spaces if they use it in an OCD-proof manner.
Nah, let's be honest: Spaces are a filthy way to indent stuff. Tabs are in a lot ways superior and if an editor can't render tabs correctly, the editor is a piece of worm puke.2 -
Google
I used to be a fan, but recently they really stopped listening to users. No one asked for a wide angle selfie cam. If you give us that huge notch at least provide a FaceID equivalent or something that makes up for the notch.
Remove the headphone jack, cool. But then make the adapter and Bluetooth reliable. Even after a year the adapter isn’t working and the Bluetooth doesn’t connect on the first attempt. Never. The fix is constantly “coming”.
Google copies Apple without thinking. Apple gets away with shit because they provide something in return.
I was an Android user for almost 10 years, and I’ll say this: I bought the iPhone XS (I’m a purist, non-stock OS is a massive no-no) and it’s a much more usable device than the Pixels or other Android devices I used. It’s lacking in a lot of ways, but overall it’s a much better phone.
Google really needs to hire people who understand what people actually want. An amazing camera on its own isn’t enough these days.11 -
For some reason, Google really, really, really wants to know peoples' phone numbers.
Of course, they say it is "only to protect us even more". But if the Twitter phone number misuse incident tells us anything, Google could change their mind at any time.
Around 2012, Google started begging people for their phone numbers upon login, but did not lock users out yet: https://groovypost.com/unplugged/... .
At some point, likely in the late 2010s, Google started locking people out of their accounts until they disclose their phone numbers. This is very unethical. Twitter already did it earlier (around 2016). Many countries' governments outlawed burner phones and people need to disclose their identity to acquire a phone number, as often under the pretext of "fighting terrorism". Surely not for mass-surveillance, am I right? ( https://comparitech.com/blog/... )
Since a few years, Google demands a phone verification for every newly created account. Honestly, that is still better than holding peoples' existing accounts hostage until they disclose a phone number, since locking people out of their accounts a while after creation causes them to lose access to their data.
Of course, people should store any data they do not wish to lose locally. Online services are not personal archives.8 -
when I graduated my dad would 'help' me in my job hunt by cutting out postings from the New York Times for "Lead Software Engineer" positions at Microsoft, Google etc despite the fact that I really was just trying to get a junior level position...2

Meeting with a co-worker who is supposed to do a code analysis on a large legacy project. Actually, HER project - she inherited it already years ago, and the original devs aren't in the company anymore.
Her: customer is asking this and that analysis.
Me: easily two weeks.
Her: but who will do that?
Me: you of course.
Her: but I don't know most of the code.
Me: me neither.
Her: and I don't know the protocols.
Me: google them. I'd have to do the same.
Really, I told her to google shit, which I consider as quite a slap for a co-worker. Basically, she tried to offload a complex analysis because she just wants the low effort parts of the job.
Won't happen. DO YOUR FUCKING JOB!12 -
I've got my new job less than a month ago. On this Monday i've got annoyed by the unhappy faces in the office and said to them, that i'll work from home. But instead I boarded a train from Zurich to Milan. Checked in to a really nice Milan coworking space called Login. And had some google hangouts meetings all while beeing anxious that some might get suspicious that I left the country. 😅8

In a forum far far away...
<user> I need help understanding something about this library.
<various users> This is how it works. This is something to consider. Here is a good way to learn all of this. etc Really helpful people.
<user> I would say more about what I want to do, but I don't want to receive any more "mouthful of unsolicited advises ".
Really? You fucking ask a question on a forum about what you want to learn. Everyone there takes it seriously and provides some really golden shit on how to learn the topic. Then you shit on them for daring to provide ways to learn the topic?
I don't know if this is a language barrier, or if they are using Google translate. I have no idea. But they come across as an asshole.6 -
I really like it when I work at home cus I know it's very productive.
I'd be working for 30 mins then I tell myself to take a break...
I scroll through facebook then I'm reminded of reddit... and then google plus.. and then podcasts.. and then youtube videos... then I proceed to discover the far reaches of the internet.............. OH NO1 -
As time goes on.. I see my friends, whom I studied programming with, just stop learning new things.
They think, or just behave, like they know everything worth knowing.
You can't talk to them about programming outside of work anymore. They just say that programming is "something you do at work".
I used to look-up to those people, and learn a lot from them. Now, they don't care enough to Google "what's this Rust thing people talk about?".
That really saddens me.2 -
Google got rid of the awesome Inbox app, only to force us back on Gmail with fucking NATIVE ADS! This one really triggered me10

So.....Google Flutter is finally out of beta and ready to go.
Why? Well you see, Google realized that Android development was a complete fucking mess (50+ lines of code to get a permission? Yeah eatadick) and that Fb had it right with React Native which held a better model for building interfaces and manipulating said data. Dart as a language is very nice and for those comming from C#, Java and Js should not pose that much of a hassle.
I love Java, I really do, but Google took care of making Android Java development as tedious as fucking possible with the quirky Android API. Hopefully Flutter will make it better and hopefully Fushia will become a better OS.
Remember, language extensions or frameworks happen for 2 different reasons:
1 the community loves the environment and language enough that they make more cool stuff for it (Js, Ruby, Python etc, this phenomena happens in said ecosystems)
2 the environment is so severly flawed that people add libs to fix it (or extensions to the language if we ate talking about a language)
E.g Android Butterknife, okhttp etc.
I welcome our Dart overlords.10 -
Being Honest,
I never had any problem with Google tracking my activities. I love their services and I feel like they're using my data to really serve me better.
But I do have problems with Amazon and Facebook.
Amazon keeps disturbing me with their annoying ads recommending things I've already purchased.
Using Facebook on the other hand is like standing nude in public.18 -
How did you learn to program ?.
I read E-books to get the basic knowledge and then I would go through a open source PHP project and rebuild it using the look cover right check technique.
Then on top of that I watched YouTube tutorials.
How did you learn ?.
I never went to college or further eduction as I seem to do really well at self teaching plus there is so much info on google nowadays.12 -
I really do like Flutter/Dart but I just cannot be the only who thinks that the way to create several nested components/widgets is even close to somewhat readable, what the fu** Google.6

HAHA! Google just got fined 4.34bn EUR by the EU! According to the EU they forced manufacturers to preinstall their search app and browser. In my opinion, a fine like this is a nice statement, but doesn't really affect a company that makes 111bn US$ per year. I think there needs to be proper taxation for GAFA!
What do you guys think?10 -
Christmas Party (2016) SPOILER ALERT
you've been warned
mental discussion I had yesterday after watching Christmas Party:
Hacker me: "I wonder if is really this easy take down the internet connection of an entire city........... maybe I'll google it around and see"
Normal Person me: "Let me get this straight you're thinking to google 'how to take down city internet'? ARE YOU A FUCKING IDIOT???? DO YOU REALIZE IN WHICH KIND OF WORLD WE LIVE NOW? DO YOU REALLY WANT THE SECRET SERVICE OF 5 DIFFERENT COUNTRY TO KICK DOWN YOUR DOOR AT 5 IN THE MORNING???????"7 -
Tbh my current job is as close to perfect as I can imagine ever existing. The best and smartest engineers I've ever met (better than Google, better than anywhere), all working on something we think is really really important (autonomous cars), and solving hard problems every day (some of which no one else has ever solved before).
Only downside is an internal sense that when I'm not working I'm delaying a product that will save people's lives.4 -
A regular russian trolleybus (electric bus, a really old and popular way of public transportation). A ticket is ~70 cents, fixed fare, accepts Apple Pay / Google pay / Samsung pay13

Holy shit Sololearn is actually such a Well Designed app to just learn the Basics of languages. Really smooth Animations and Fun Quizzes
(Btw, This Text was written with Google Keyboard which some how is so bad, i need to Switch Back to SwiftKey like STOP CAPITALIZING RANDOM WORDS GOOGLE!!)4 -
Whenever tech support answers "yes, i can help you with that sir",
what they really mean is "no, but i will google it for you" -
fuck google! fuck the people updating the android OS! fuck android!
first you guys removed the feature to connect wifi using WPS and then promised to bring it back but instead brought a completely different feature
then you make all the clipboard manager apps obsolete. only keyboard apps can be clipboard manager otherwise the rest of them are screwed.
app needs my location permission just so that it can turn on my wifi! wtf!
app needs bluetooth, wifi & location just so that it can send data from one device to another device offline? why bluetooth? are we going back to 1970s?
fuck you google! fuck android!
I really wish some other companies fork it and removes all the clutters and makes it better.19 -
Some of these Software Engineers on YouTube are so frustrating me:
YouTuber:
- Hey guys, I'm doing YouTube because I interviewed at Google/Microsoft and got rejected. I really wanted to work at Google/Microsoft because it's my dream company to work.
- Hey guys, I wanted to let you know that I got the job at Google/Microsoft. I will still be making YouTube videos.
- Hey guys, so I have resigned from Google/Microsoft after working for 1 year because blah blah9 -
I really, but really hate popup windows on web. I just came to your website and you want my email? By hiding all the content with large popup? NO WAY. And it is not less annoying when in the middle of an article the popup jumps out at me.
Good news, google is finally going to put websites with popups below others on organic search. I hope people will finally stop placing popups on their website.
Sorry for long post. -
So I went through the first round Google interview process and was declined for not "finishing fast enough" even though I did in fact solve the problem in the allotted time.
Either it's a BS excuse and they were just interviewing me to interview me for a quota or there is some invisible time limit that I am not aware of.
Really annoys me when I just don't know exactly what I'm doing wrong and instead get what feels like cop out answers.4 -
Any Haskell programmers here?
I started to learn this language for fun two days ago and so far I find it absolutely amazing and really different to OOP languages. Most of the time the solutions make so much sense, but actually coding them requires really abstract thinking of the problem. How fast did you learn Haskell? How long it took you do code it comfortably? Any advises you can give me? I work mainly through a uni exercise sheet from a friend from a different uni, and the rest is hoogle and google :P10 -
Http/2 server push is really cool. Like, really fucking cool. Those researchers at google really got this right. I hate how they handle their users but I have to say they really make good use of the money they get by selling us for kettle.2
-
I have so many questions in my head…
Should I focus doing front-end or back-end?
For mobile dev, flutter or react native?
Kanban or Agile?
Google cloud or AWS?
Switch to Linux or stick to WSL2?
Solidity or Rust for blockchain apps?
Best low-code that my dev peers won’t hate me for using?
If starting a project,
Bootstrapping or chase after VCs?
Do you guys use conditioner when you run out of shaving cream?
Keto or vegan?
Is milk really that bad for our body??37 -
A lot of people give Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. shit for "selling" user data although in my opinion acting as a matchmaker between advertisers and users does not really constitute selling data.
In contrast there seem to be a lot of companies that actually do sell user data that I never hear anyone here talking about.5 -
Google simply can't knock off harrassing their users with security theatre.
A friend of mine has a small personal YouTube channel. He has recently been bombarded with several phone verification requests a week: "Verify it's you. To continue your session, complete a brief verification. This extra step helps us keep your account safe by making sure it’s really you. "
While frequent verifications may be understandable on YouTube channels with millions of subscribers, channels with only a few dozen subscribers are not attractive hacking targets. A verification would be justified before a potentially harmful action such as deleting videos or deleting a channel. But not for normal everyday use.
What's next? Will they ask users to "verify it's them" every ten minutes, "just for extra security"? Just to verify that it is "really, really, really, really, really" them?
It's not security. It's security theatre.
Sorry, Google, but users are not in the mood of doing a phone verification every other day.
Has this been Google's perverted wet dream all along?1 -
Atleast make it random but cycling through ? Really ?? In it's presentation google assistant was presented as this amazing new Ai that used the latest and best machine learning algorithms and methods on the market. Don't get me wrong it's awesome it can predict patterns in my daily life and interactions but thats what machine learning does, we still didn't come very far with human-software interaction technologies have we ?5

Saw a reddit thread earlier asking about the most unsettling shit that people have found out Google has on them by downloading their data. I saw a bunch of comments about people finding voice recordings that Google had taken. After reading these, I was wondering what I could find from downloading my data. Decided to download my data, and on the page for it I saw that apparently I had disabled location history, audio activity, and device information.
Knowing companies like Google, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't stop recording that stuff, just that they're not providing it to me. There were zero voice recordings, but there was location history up until about the beginning of 2017.
Another thing they have is all the pictures from all of my hangouts chats. Apparently there had a good amount of older pictures of myself in there. Going back to probably 2-3 years ago, when I had my emo hair. Just a bit of a throwback. One picture I saw was from last January, when my hair was reaching my chest. Made me really miss my hair.
Other than that, nothing that interesting. Just something I thought I'd share.10 -
I start shaking and getting nervous when there is something I really, really want to say.
Today in school we started talking about Amazon Alexa and privacy.
This topic concerns me a lot and I started talking in front of the whole class about Google and things they do to spy on you. After about 30 seconds of me talking I started shaking because there was so much I wanted to say and with so much enthusiasm and also a bit of anger.13 -
I think the number 1 reason I hate PHP is not because the language itself is really really really bad; but because it's so easy to google "how to php" and get tons of tutorials (full of shit code) that most of the PHP programmers are bad and have no CS studies whatsoever, resulting in unmantainable tight-coupled pieces of [spaghetti] code that won't even encapsulate any business logic.
Anybody else feeling like changing to a different language a similar reason?5 -
Thought the day would never come but... I'm starting to hate android as an operating system...
It's just becoming so inconsistent and fragmented, it's almost at windows level of inconsistent.
Now either google should start regulating the app store and android itself or completely ditch android as a complete stand alone OS.
I would personally seperate android into a runtime and focus on fuschia by building the android runtime into it, that way it could pull system UI element design and such rather than have the user build apps that look completely out of place and don't follow rules like dark mode, theming and the such...
I'm not going to jump ship into iOS because fuck iOS but just really hope google really starting tightening android up else I feel like it's just going to starting breaking more and more into a steaming mess.5 -
FUCK YOU YOU SHITTY COCK SUCKING BITCH MOTHERFUCKER.
GO DIE IN A HOLE THEN GET RAPED IN HELL. I REALLY HATE THIS SHIT.
FUCK OFF GOOGLE.12 -
Have you ever been working on something really important and in the middle of a calculation, you suddenly remember.. that you had saved the last Muffin from 2 days ago inside a container on the shelf where you never ever Store stuff.... out of the blue ......and you wonder till you get home and find that muffin.
...ah what a beautiful mind.... Seems analogous to a Google now notification but in your brain... -
Sometimes I Google really basic stuff to find stackoverflow answers with code, just because I can't be bothered to type it out myself3
-
Google keeps reaffirming what I keep telling everyone... it's not 1995 any more. They just ripped Symantic over using 7-year old (un-updated) open-source components in Norton. These are massive zero-day exploits that are wide the hell open. If you're really concerned, use MSE on Windows. If you're on a Mac, grow a brain cell and actually look at what you grant permissions to, and you won't even need AV.3
-
Have you become a replacement tool doing manual and menial IT work to bridge the lack of a proper IT process and streamlining?
I've worked for such companies and it's super annoying.. companies that zip projects to Google Drive instead of using a VCS.. not even having a drawing board or proper office chairs.. not even a cafeteria.. companies using Subversion instead of Git, no project management systems nor software, no JIRA, shit written down on printed paper,.. the list goes on.
A nightmare, really. Like developing in the 90's..3 -
So Google apparently removed the most important Chrome feature:
"Toolbar auto-hide in fullscreen"
This change came with the new UI recently and there are no #flags around to fix it
Previously the chrome browser was easy to use as a multi-tasking machine, but now it feels really dumb.
This resulted in a loss of 15% of screen-real estate.
Please give me back my choice4 -
I have an interview with Google in less than 3 hours. It really sucks because I'm totally not motivated to do it. I didn't study much for the interview, because I recently switched companies and had a lengthy job search. And I finally landed at a decent job that I'm having a great time working for. And to be totally honest, I just have interview fatigue. It started in late May and ended in August. Countless interviews asking the same damn questions just gets exhausting. Too "homework assignments" in addition to my "day job". I'm just burned out on interview hence I just haven't had it in me to really study for a Google interview.5

If Google hadn't kill Google Play Music, I don't think a single soul would voluntarily switch to it's YouTube Crap Music.
If you remember prior to 2011 the initial plan of Google was to take market away from Apple's iTunes. They initially shipped Amazon music with branded Android OS before the development of Play music.
As a long term user of Play music I'd say "killing the product" was a "bitch move"!
Because Play music is doing really great and you could tell from its reviews and moreover the destination product is quarterly-baked not even a viable replacement in the least sense.
There are more than a million and one problem with YouTube music, currently you would notice your playlist history gets clogged up with your videos when you visit the video web. It's more like the actual YouTube app hiding behind a curtain to mimick a music player. Which is so so stupid and annoying!
As a user all I want from a music player is to fucking listen to music not to watch fucking videos... which makes the app unnecessarily filled with stupid options you never really need.
I understand that monetisation is necessary but please show some fucking courtesy by doing shit with wisdom!14 -
So I go into Google Search Console to try to determine why its saying pages are not compliant with mobile and whatnot.
3 hours later I come out realizing that what Google REALLY wants is for everyone to build every web page as static HTML with no script tags and never a call to an external website. Just dump all that javascript and css and HTML into one BIG FRIGGIN FILE so our crawler feels satisfied that it's loading everything all in one request.
No CMSes allowed unless GOOGLE built it.
Let's just all revert to HTML 1.0 and be done with it.1 -
When you're looking for that really peculiar problem on Google with mandatory generic words, but the results are everything except what you fucking wanted :
- <the main page of that language>
- <"how to" useless videos with no relation to what you're looking for whatsoever>
- <some more unrelated stuff>
- <outdated forbidden techniques>
- <Chinese gibberish>
- <something that looks like what you looking for, with no answers>
- "how to summon a demon (not clickbait!)"
At this point you either explore the unexplored lands (aka page 2 and beyond, or using Bing or Yahoo), or accept your fate.3 -
I was a child and I was playing Habbo, I was really addicted to it. A friend of mine in this game said me "why don't we create a fansite?" and I said "ok lol" because I imagined that creating a website would have been funny and easy. So I searched on Google how to create websites, and I discovered HTML. The first version was terrible, but with experience it went better day by day. It lasted 6 years and we had 200 users per day
-
I am not sure if devrant is the best place to post this so sorry if it is not.
How far do employers/recruiters go when searching online information about their applicants?
Do they simply check your fb? simple google search your name? advanced queries with multiple search engines? data gathering software like maltego? or really check and link leaked db dumps and pastebins?
If anyone has any knowledge or experience with this I would love to hear.
Thanks in advance10 -
Do you really have to? Don't worry, Google Play is shit in many ways but it'll surely update the application!2
-
When you're an idiot who doesn't know what you're talking about since you've always used Google, and people give you shit for it anyways instead of just being cool about it.
😧🔫
Come on guys. This is ridiculous. My school uses Google services, so I'm pretty much forced into it. I've never really ventured outside of Google because it works just fine. I clearly don't know what I'm talking about. That much is obvious. How about trying to be a good person and help me out instead of talking down to me and --'ing my rants and comments.
This is why humanity is doomed to fail. Half the population is comprised of complete fucking idiots, and the other half is mostly assholes.4 -
Not really a joke or meme, but not a rant or story. Go to Google search on a PC and search Thanos. Then click on the glove on the right and watch. You're welcome.4
-
I changed my default search engine to DDG for some weeks to try something new. Sadly I must say that it isn't for me. At least not in the company I work. Reason is: we use a German CMS with most Forum posts written in German and I noticed really fast that Google just gives me much better results on specific issues.
Are you guys happy with DDG?9 -
It honestly fucking seems like I am the only one that never could get google keyboard to have better auto-correct and also automatically add words I constantly fix after it corrects them - to some sort of dictionary, even with all relevant settings activated.
It's really frustrating when people praise it's auto-correct and learning functions, when I just can't get it to work on any of my devices.6 -
Google really fucked up with localization for Flutter!
We need to create a getter for each translated string? For real!!
Please tell me I understood it wrong :|4 -
best ad services to use? I really don't want to use google. even if they paid double, I wouldn't use them. anyone know? I'm talking about for websites and/or apps21

Developers. !=. God's of tech
Do ppl really think we know every single big apps error codes?!?!
Isint tht Googles job, I Google errors and solutions every day for like 1015 times.

i love chromebooks, but i wish they built them with more storage. i know that everything by google is based on the cloud and shit so most chromebooks only have like 4gb of storage but if there was a chromebook with 256gb id be in heaven. does anyone else think chromebooks look really nice compared to other laptops?3

Google has a really strange idea of what a rate limit is.
I’m trying to feed a few hundred URLs into the link shortener service. Docs say “1m a day, 1 req per second per user.”
No problem. Put a 1.2s sleep between hits.
Almost to the end... 403 rate limit exceeded.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻4 -
Fuck Google analytics .. seriously .. fuck it .. I understand it's a free tool that doesn't mean you mask your incompetency behind that banner.
Im pretty sure minecraft mods have better documentation than this POS.
I really like the user demographics data it gives , but with the asterisk on literally every other metric it gets harder to believe the ones that are functional.
I cant express exactly how many times I end up with hordes of articles that point out small caveats with this shit.
FUCK IT2 -
I really do think that the recent partnership of Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and IBM on AI is the worst possible news. Things are moving towards the AI revolution and the companies behind it could possible have unimaginable power over the world. It's not a matter of when or if, but of who, and I have a bad feeling of the whos...19

So my new car has now chevystar which is quite expensive, is fine and that, I don't really use it to be honest. Though it has a nice service to remember me if I'm on my 'no car day'-like with a google assistant -like voice.
But today while driving with my wife, we were listening music and the music stopped.
then, the fucking chevystar voice started:
"Remember you can get your new car now and start paying it in a year"
"Pay us a visit to your XXXX chevrolet dealer"3 -
I have spent 5 days in Microsoft Excel trying to do my budget planner. I struggled a lot and too much Googling. Google started to show reCaptcha whenever I search for something after that.
Yesterday, I spent 3 hours and got my fully functionality web based budget planner done.
I don't know if I did the right thing or not but am really happy and I have the full control. -
I got this recently on my Firefox update. The podcast talks about Surveillance Capitalism and sounds a good hearing but I really don't know on whose side is Mozilla because their browser default search engine is still Google. Its kind of hypocritically confusing.

Gotta make a bullshit deck, not really my job, but I guess it makes a change...
Right-click, save image.
It's a webp file...
...oh just FUCK OFF WEBP YOU F-oh, actually, I'm making this in Google Slides. That's literally their own format! I'll just save these as webp, no need to worry.
(ten minutes and lots of saving later)
Drag a webp file into Google Slides, in Google Chrome:
"Sorry, this format is not supported."
Even your parents hate you, webp. Time to have a nice bath with a bar heater, webp.2 -
Eclipse with ADT. Never again. I'm so glad Google and JetBrains have put together a really great environment for Android development.

Really excited about Google Chat/RCS.
My mobile provider is probably the first one to support it in Austria!8 -
I would really like to know why Google decided that it will only show me video ads for one specific brand of cereals and freaking feminine hygiene products. I have a freaking google home and a chromecast, there is more than enough info for them to know that I am NOT a woman. I never searched for feminine higiene products nor talked about them. Like wtf Google.16

Used to Google all my `man` pages... Don't really know why. Formatting maybe. Then I typed `man date`... I use `man` for my `man` pages now.3

Microsoft Teams logic when using it from Chrome on Linux:
Wanna have a team call with multiple people? Sure no problem, proceed.
Wanna have a direct call with one person? Hell no, we don't do that here!
Also lets just ignore the fact that you are actually running Google Chrome, you should really try out Windows and Edge.2 -
> "A flat design UI reduces cognitive load!"
Oh really, Google? If that is your aim, then how come you increase cognitive load by making pull-to-refresh mandatory on your mobile web browser, which constantly has to be avoided by the user?7 -
- why did you enter test data text value with this <script> html? Don't do that. Use normal text
this is something I've never expected to hear from a php/react dev.... I'm truly disappointed. I really am.
On top of that he refused to follow my recommendations to google: "xss". Another teammate had to google for him and drop a link.
Just when I was about to like working with this guy.... :(5 -
companies really be having hiring practices like google but the works literally just servicenow ticket writing for an offshore team.1

Doing a technical assessment. Slightly different stack than what I am used to!
- NGINX instead of Traefik
- Kubernetes instead of Docker Swarm
Just because the stack is different, anxiety / impostor syndrome is kicking in. I'm proud of myself for commanding my brain and body to execute:
While !done:
- google,
- find simplest straightforward tutorial
- implement
The chemicals inside my body are all over the place. I really want to move out of my current job!! -
Where to begin learning about blockchain? (Google searches return way too much information.)
This has been in the back of my head for years now. And with all the attention that crypto currency has been getting lately, reminded me to look into this again.
Note: I don't actually care for cryto currencies, I'm just really curious about blockchain technology.4 -
Still in the interview phase.
I am waiting for an answer again.
The interview was 4 hours but I really
enjoyed it. The office looked so nice it could have been at Google inc.3 -
Not really Dev rant but bought 2 google homes. Set them up all nice and dandy and then boom.
Me: Hey google, set a reminder to buy batteries.
Home: I am sorry, I can't do that yet.
WTF ok.
Me: hey google, set a calendar reminder to buy batteries tomorrow.
Home: I am sorry, I can't add calendar events yet.
And the list goes on. WTF google. Why my phones Google assistant can do all of the above and a home assistant cannot even though they are the same thing...
Guess who is browsing actions api to implement missing functionality that should be in a freaking core...
Talking about buying voice controlled music box...1 -
Thanks Google calendar for sometimes giving me notifications and sometimes not. Missed am appointment due that.
Anyone here with the same problem? It's really inconsistent.
Ooh PS I did setup the notifications.1 -
Google Apps Script is probably the worst scum of the earth I’ve come across in a while.
Shit documentation and JavaScript 1.6, really?
No wonder nobody uses this crap and has proper implementation of a vast variety of applications.4 -
The worst part about working for a big company is that whatever is the problem that you google the solution is always like "try changing this global parameter that only the CEO has the privileges to change" or "the only solution is to raze to the ground your 1 year old technology and use this state-of-the-art edge solution".
And it looks like I'm the only one that complains about this.
I mean, really do people have no constraints when they work?1 -
Typo Checker: "unsubmitted" is not a word
Me: Really?
Me: Opens google...
Me: Starts typing... UN... SUB..
Google: Unsubmitted is not a word!

Good guy Google.
Recently started a new job. Getting good feedback on my work. When really everything is off google :D -
Me *looking at the project* : it won't be difficult, it's going to be piece of cake.
Me *really reads more about it* : maybe it's not what I thought
Me *now doubting myself* : Google has all the answers
Me : runs to Google for something as simple as a while loop😩.1 -
My last night :
- Had nothing much to work on
- Opened an anime site to spend sometime.
- Clicked on some really good shows.
- Realized full screen isn't working on that page.
- Fired up JS Console , spent next 30 minutes trying to get the video part full screen. Failed!!
- Opened up Google & navigated through stackoverflow looking for the fix. Still couldn't do it.
- Cursed the website for having a bad design.
- Left the site.8 -

I really like the Material Design guidelines that Google has released with Android 5.0, and maybe, @dfox, you could make the status bar match a darker tint of the app's color, as this color is also used on the recents menu and on my keyboard, and it really (IMO) makes an app stand out.
Thanks!9 -
I always start with a personal need. I can't really commit to projects that I wouldn't use myself. Once I have the need, I spend days trying to Google if it exists, and if not, I go ahead. (Then sometimes I find out later that it does exist, it's just that they suck at SEO.)1
-
I like the answer Peter Norvig, director of research at Google gave to this area of inquiry two decades ago. Some of the concepts show some age, but over all I think his advice is spot on:
https://norvig.com/21-days.html
I would certainly suggest someone spend some time learning some programming on their own BEFORE committing to something like a boot camp. They'd either figure out they didn't need it, or could better discern between different boot camp programs what will REALLY work for them and if it's REALLY worth the time and money. -
It's really hard to search in Google about how to kill children when parent is not waiting for them so the children won't become a zombie
-
I'd love to work for NASA or Space X and be one of the first to colonize mars. Should that not work out, I also really want to work for Google and do some freelance work on the side maybe. And all of that is only true if by then I haven't created the next big tech thing.
-
Hi all my webdev friends! Question for you, tried google, got propaganda.
Why do front end devs use frameworks like angular or react? I was looking into it, and it looks like html/JavaScript can handle it all. Wouldn't removing them save load time and data overhead? Does it really boost productivity that much?
As a backend dev, it is completely possible I missed something haha.5 -
5 fucking days of Google search after Google search. Error after fucking error. Deadline getting closer by the fucking minute. teammates interrupting me every 10 minutes over discord asking for help on their fucking part of the project
and it turns out the solution was just one damn line
One fucking line in a forEach to iterate over the model data sending the necessary aspects to the Javascript function to create map pins for the database locations
5 fucking horrible days all amounts to 1 line
Really shows how much I still have to learn. And the yelling at my screen reveals my need to take an anger management class1 -
I don't know how any company can keep on top of crazy npm package changes. I work in a REALLY SMALL team. We are still using bunch of deprecated packages and we keep building on top of those packages. Updating packages is always a nightmare. It's impossible to Google solution when no one is using the particular combination of deprecated packages. Fuck me4
-
Not really a rant, but I love Android!
Go to Settings -> Language and Input -> Language, and change it to English (UK), the answers given by Google assistant will have a British accent. Change it to English (India), Google assistant will have an Indian accent, and the same thing applies for English (Australia) and obviously English (US).
Perfect example of phone adapting to the user!4 -
Testing out VR without your own VR equipment is a pain.
The glasses are not much of a problem, since you can first develop using the google cardboard SDK and test it with your phone.
It's the controllers that are a pain to test. Luckily vrtk made something that simulates the controllers, which can be controlled with the keyboard.
The controls are very uncomfortable, this is not their fault; you can't really emulate movement easily with a keyboard. -
Has anyone tried Vivaldi around here? Although I assume it was forked from Opera, it's a really nice alternative to Google Chrome, plus it supports Chrome apps! And does not kill the ram!!!!9
-
My phone has a useless Google Discover page on home screen that I can't use without singing in with Google and agreeing to them collecting data. 😐
So now I have a useless page on my home screen. (Really, somebody needs to make a layering over app for this shit that just gets my preferred feed and fill it here to makes use of this space. )10 -
Any devs out there worked building Golang microservices for a production environment?
I don’t have a specific question really. Just wondering who is out there on a similar path!
I’m building using Golang, Google Cloud, Docker, Kunernetes, and Terraform currently on a personal product bound for production!1 -
Looks like Android studio's artificial java to kotlin converter learned faster to write better kotlin than my shitty brain :/
People from java background, where did you learned to write efficient kotlin code and how?
Where to learn how to write that famous "kotlin's super precise and small , ugly ass anonymous looking code full of keywords , that only work when arranged in a particular pattern and defies my all previous knowledge of oop , java and good practices " code?
I really wish to learn, since android and google seems to be heading towards this beautiful new shit1 -
Why Google? Why?! Why do you always asume my language and what the fuck do you really think I can only speak one language? Fucking prick Google.1

So the last two weeks Ive been trying to flash lineageOS on my new OnePlus6. Ive done multiple phones with custom roms without issue, but the new A/B partitioning makes it a lot more impossible.
I followed LineageOS their official guide for the phone twice and also suggestions from both OP subreddit as LineageOS subreddit.
After every fail I end up with a black screen and a blue LED, both when booting the OS and when booting TWRP from fastboot. Then Im doing a factory reset through a windows only tool and start over.
Im getting pretty frustrated, to a level I am almost saying FUCK it I will use google, since my current phone only works while connected to a charger. Since I really hate google I hope any of you can give a suggestion of flashing my phone.10 -
Algorithms class assignment..
"Prove that the merge procedure cannot run in place".
Searching google...
There are multiple merge procedures (though super complicated) that run in place.
What's the use of this class if we can't be practical because we must be theoretical, but we can't mention real theoretical stuff because it's so complicated??
I mean we are being told something that is just wrong..
I really hate this fucking professor. She went to Oxford and now thinks she's the smartest person in the universe.. -
Has anyone ever bought a domain and left your info public?
It amazes me that these spammers can't even make their emails read well or professional ah oll
Like "Google top page)"
Did you really not see that parentheses there?3 -
Was really motivated and started out with Android development.
Android studio is sick as fuck.I am struck in the second step. The only solution I can find is "try restarting your system".
Like wtf arrrgh!!
After gazillion times of restarts later. Finally, I am giving up.
Thank you google, now go f*ck yourself.9 -
When you think you finally know a programming language really well but then you start a project and want to do it all on your own but you dont even know what to do... so basically I'm dependant on tutorials and Google.. until I am good enough to do it on my own..

Does anyone really have an idea of what is going to happen to the Java platform after the eventual release of Java 9?
It seems that most of the public road maps from Oracle have been largely vaporware, or at least significantly delayed. It feels like the major platform innovations like JigSaw, G1GC, etc. have all been released _years_ after they were proposed. Now with the JEE 8 delays - is Oracle making different plans now that the Google lawsuit didn't go their way?3 -
Something really strange happened now, I received my 2-step login codes from Google from an unknown number and just codes, doesn't Google usually use this format: G-XXX-XXX
and have their name in the title?5 -
I really wish i had the opportunity to work at larger companies tht move the industry (facebook, twitter, google, amazon). Just to experiancr even as an intern regardless of what people say negative or positive. Just work with brilliant minds and this will make me see and experiance things and make me a better developer but mainly be myself and a better person.2

What's your thoughts on the newly released .app tld? Is it going to be the new .io?
It also seems like Google provides TLS certificates for free to all .app domains. I know there's let's encrypt but I still think that this is great. Google is really pushing a more "Secure" internet. -
First time my tracker app got used by the customer, and showed a really nice path on google maps, that was the first time I felt joy of programming
-
So I was checking out Scaleway home page, and they said: Gitlab use their infrastructure?
Is it pure lie or gitlab really host something there? And why would they do that if they use Google?
I don't know what to trust these days lol23 -
Thanks google for creating the illusion of an option to change the shipping address for a repair order. You even mention the new address in your notification email, but when I click on UPS tracking, I can see that you sent the shipment to the old address, which is in a different city where I can't quickly go to pick up my repaired phone. After charging an extra 95,- Euros for additional damage supposedly not covered by my warranty. Lucky you that my old phone had connection problems with the shitty Vodafone station wi-fi router, which is one of the few reasons that I still even want to use a google hardware product. Thanks google for just being slightly less wretched and mediocre than your competitors, that might grant you some more years before you will be buried in history forever. Pixel phones are just like Macbooks: high quality product and good marketing, good enough to make your customer accept everything else being bullshit. Google search is even worse, but based on the same concept: just suck a little less than your competitors but don't waste any effort trying to actually be really good at anything.3

Does devRant depend on any Google services, sure as Google play services?
I'm trying to get Google out of my life, but would really like to keep devRant 😞7 -
Anyone have any advice for team-matching at Google? Got in through foobar, don’t have any real experience & really don’t feel like I know much. Thanks.1

What do you think, does Google just have really good code structure that allows re-use at this level, or are they just coordinating release notes?1

Really enjoying Google Hacks from O'Reilly 2nd edition even though from 2005. Has anyone read Spidering Hacks also O'Reilly?

I have a handy RSS Feed Reader extension in Google Chrome that allows me to add RSS feeds and check them in a popup in my browser and get notified when something new comes up. I've added RSS feeds for my email, GitHub, and a whole lot of other things. It'd be really awesome if devRant added an RSS feed too, so users can implement devRant in their RSS feed readers too (if anyone still uses them in the 21st century lmao). What does everyone think?

Im curious guys, what's everyone main core OS/Distro at the moment and why?
For me it's chrome OS, taken a little hiatus from programming as it's been dragging my mental state down a bit so I've been focusing on writing my book and what programming I am doing is just me learning ground up java script development. So all I really need are my google docs services and a good code editor.4 -
This story happened to everyone, and i am sure that if i search, i will find dozens of similar stories, but the different here is, i tried, i really tried, in a hundred different ways to achieve my goal !
When you are stuck on a problem, let's say, that you have a program, project, website ... and need to achieve something technically weird (or hard) and need some help to save you time on experimentations. The first thing a lot of people do is : Google.com && put search dorks.
But, at a moment, google gets "dirty", you use it so often that he always think to know better then you what you are looking for.
It reminds of "Ted", the movie (for thows who know it) where they asked : "Hey ! Why does google always suggest us to look for black dicks ??"
It is exactly what happened to me, i got results who doesn't have anything to do with what i was looking for !
You can give it a try now : type "semantic web RDF to RDB"
You won't find anything, except results related to : NOSQL DBs, which is totally annoying.
Something else, i once google swift to get some updates, what results did i got ? Taylor Swift ... (musician)
I often get 2 or 3 results from google, which made me thinking that i somewhat reached the end of internet, or that people are so dumb that i will have spend hours trying to figure my solutions, but, before doing that, other solutions had to be tested.
1- TOR : Google tracks his users and uses its algos and bullshits to return results as close as possible to the user's demand (big fail ...) so how about moving to a different country ? DL TOR browser, open, setup, go to US, open google (got us version YAY !) enter my keywords, and, nothing, still nothing, more results for sure, but nothing related to what i was looking for.
2- VM
Pop a VM, launch TOR, use Hidden mode, delet all cookies and stuff (it is a new VM but who knows).
Use keywords (now in UK). Here they are !! my results !!! i finally found some decent results about my keywords !
But, i have the required knowledge to do this kind of stuff, but how about people who rely heavily on google ? they can't change country, clear everything, trick google to think you are a new user, they have almost biased and flawed results. I tried duckduckgo (i love them) but they are not that efficient.
Google says not to anything evil, but they ARE EVIL, miss guiding people, suggesting corrections who have nothing to do with the keywords, or results totally unrelated in any way to the keywords while results exist in other countries ???
Ever since, i don't pay attention to google at all, and started thinking that google's algos are manipulating people, i don't know if it is done on purpose or not, but the result is the same, people have biased results based on their country, on their tag, on their ID, and the recent keywords.
During that period i was cursing google every funcking day, and i am still doing it, too much trackers, too much manipulation, i will end-up enclosing myself in darknet.4 -
Google should really add support for Linux on Chromebooks. I don't see a reason to pay £1k for a Pixel Book just for build quality and great looks. However, having native Linux support and being able to use something more useful than ChromeOS would be hugely attractive and I would consider buying it.4
-
Not sure if Google is surprised this happens or they really never face issues using Gradle
Edit:
Took 4 minutes to compile a basic flutter app. But it takes 1.3 minutes to compile a native app. So far liking flutter, still hating React Native tho1 -
Guys I need a new phone because my current one is really slow and just honestly shitty.
I know way more about computers than I do phones so I was wondering if there is any certain phone you guys recommend? Preferably something that does NOT shove Google down my throat? (My phone doesnt let me delete Google apps and I dont feel like dealing with that shit or doing extra stuff to remove..)15 -
And that feeling when you google your error message and get 3 hits, none exact, 2 of them in Chinese and one automated malware scan results.
It really makes me feel that I'm pushing the industry forward. -
Ponderings more than a rant.
Can't help but feel that if Google (and other companies with similar ridiculously hard interview experiences) want to keep attracting the best candidates, they'll have to change their approach. I can't be alone in that, surely?
I know a lot of good senior & lead devs through various networks - *really* smart people, definitely way brighter than me, who stay on top of their game, work really well in any team they're a part of and create top-notch, beautiful and well-tested code to do just about anything they set their mind to. A few of them have literally turned around projects on the brink of disaster into massive successes.
Have *any* of them expressed any desire in working for companies like Google? Not one iota, and mainly because of the interview process which has a (deserved) reputation for being unnecessarily long, drawn-out, and full of irrelevant questions and mind games.
20 years ago when working for Google was *the* cool place to be, I could see it. But I really can't see them attracting the cream of the crop all the while they continue to take that approach. The really good devs just have too much choice elsewhere - there's not much reason to bother.5 -
So, one of my finals is to go through a Scheme tutorial with about 30 questions. There's also a project attached to the end of it. All this work, and I'm just wondering: what am I possibly going to used Scheme for? Google didn't really turn up anything.6
-
Nothing beats when you move into a new team and your old team message you all the time for those little things they could Google... Did people really think I was that smart??? Maybe some people are better at googling than others...
-
I'm getting really tired of colleagues jumping onto the next framework/ideology/technology that is going to solve all of our problems, instead of just working on solving some (ANY!) of our problems!
Sometimes you have to put the work in people; it's not all Google, Stack Overflow, Copy and Paste!!2 -
I'm in a react/vue/angular/polymer-debate. Lets continue this here, but only with the worst arguments you heard about these 4.
I start:
React: "I dont like it, facebook might have a backdoor in the code so they can see what we're developing"
Angular: "We use Google Cloud, angular is developed by google too. There is a synergy between the two"
(If you really need this to be a question, then it's "what are the worst arguments you heard about javascript-frameworks?")4 -
when I heard someone using google translation,it reminded me of a shocking and sad fact.
One day I passed through a friend's room and heard "I love you" , "I really love you"...I am curious as to why his room makes this sound?Oh,it turned out that he is using google translation....
If I have enough money,I will go with a siri back. -
Had my on-site with Google recently, and I feel stupid wasting 45mins on a math question. I feel frustrated because I was able to do the other medium level problems without hints. :/ Felt really stupid when I saw the solution wasn't very complicated.2
-
I started using angular about one month ago, I did a long course and now I'm trying to do my first commercial app.
I have to say I really really hate the template engine of angular, I've been web developing for about 5 years, I've used bootsrap, materialize and foundation.
It rally sucks how it's all different in angular, their fucking gryd system didn't even use classes, use weird html tags, and the angular material has very very poor examples and documentation.
Another shitty thing is the Google search, when I search any shit about angular or angular material I have to watch careful if it is angularjs or only angular because most folks switch the names without any criteria.
Why the hell Google has to make a framework so incompatible with standard shit? Why it has to be a pain to use a fucking framework after 5 years of experience?
If someone can give me an advice I will be grateful1 -
@dunning-kruger If you downloaded your interview questions from a Google search. Are you really qualified to determine if someone is senior or not?
-
I am aiming for google, I have some questions regarding to interview process, I choose to proficient myself into development world and data structure and algorithms, But I have almost 0 skills in competitive programming and I don't have any ranking all competitive programming platforms but I really want to work for google, How do I fulfill my goal to work for google and how do I clear google interview process?2

https://youtube.com/watch/...
I honestly don't believe it is really true and if it is, I don't think google listened in the backround or even cortana did, but it was youtube itself.
But still, pretty creepy and maybe listening does not work like in real time, but it is working. Slowly. Hidden. Precisely.1 -
Given the number of people on here who say "I'm learning" or "I want to learn", I saw this and thought I'd post it. Sorry if a repost or advertising or otherwise not really acceptable, but might be of use to someone.

So I'm a Java Dev used to work develop products on Google Clpud Platform. Technology stack used was Java, REST API/Webservices, Firebase, Google Cloud Datastore. Now that I've resigned from there (because of limoted opportunities) and joined a new company in another city.
And in new company I've been assigned to a project which is developed using Java Swing, SQL Server only.
So my question is:
Is it worth working on Java Swing which is a fairly old tech or should I look for another job: a webapp developer using Google Cloud Platform or AWS technology stack. What can be the wise move here in my case?
Really need a direction here guys. :) -
I think the biggest help I provide is not answering really simple stuff and saying “google it” and hanging up the phone.
In my belief if I am to help with trivial stuff she won’t remember it next time but if she searches it or tries most logical options(which means she has to read all options and the text on the screen) she will have higher chance of remembering it or googling it without my say so.2 -
I always have multiple accounts thanks to Single-Sign-On, so I don't find my event tickets, logins, and contacts. To make it worse, those sites regularly log me out for no reason and some force logging in using my Google account although I have a main account with my business email address.
I suspect that's another deceptive pattern that they let happen on purpose so they can claim to have more users than they really have.1 -
Cleaning my system. Learned something new (do a vacuum on your journalctl logs).
Any way: biggest applications on my system in the screenshot.
Can I have an applause for google-cloud-cli for being bigger than open office?
That google-cloud-cli thing is not some advanced supertool that you installed for convenience, it's actually to get API access to certain google services and is really required. Install this thing, and magically - no idea how (there is no ENV key introduced, so it executes an app to resolve credentials or smth?) - your python applications are authenticated some how after logging in using a web interface.
- it's big
- not normal api key usage
- requires a web browser
- user of API key needs to know credentials of the owner of the key, so forget installing by someone else.
Google is crazy. Why would you build smth so different than any other API supplier. Why reinvent the wheel in a bad way. How can so much of it be client side.
Only positive thing is - that it works immediately after being surprised that it was really such big app that allows you API access.
It's impossible that such big system is safer than just a simple API key.
Also, if it provides interface and is requirement for other google libs it's just a freaking SDK.1 -
Something's REALLY wrong with Firefox lately with its constant crashes and worse performance (rivalling IE lately).

The problem is not just the academe, but also the students.. they only choose CS as a scapegoat for bar/board/licensure exams, or they heard it was one of the highest paying jobs or ITs have the opportunity to work from home or on a google-like working place.. without even thinking whether they really like computers or not! We are being contaminated with bunch of xxxxxxx(i cant think of a word to describe them) .. Let's filter them freshmen and give them hard maths or design exams before entering CS

I really don't get how every, single, mobile developer, position practically requires you to be a top developer on the Google PlayStore. Because if you're not you're "too junior".
It's like none of these companies understand that just because I don't already know your tech in and out and don't have 1mill+ downloads on my apps doesn't mean I can't rise to the challenge.
Been on the hunt for 2 years now, and have been put through the interview loop more than I can count with me never getting past the first round interview.4 -
Why the hell do the Pixel 3 XL have a notch if it doesn't support Face unlock?
Meaning there could be other functions related but they are like face filters on snapchat and all. Face unlock is something would be used the most.
Really Google! U decided to keep the notch but no face unlock 🙄7 -
Woohoo! Devrant on HN! Kinda reminds how when you google "xcode sucks" the top result is a devrant post.
Heh, I was just thinking how I never really used devrant in past while. It's almost like a sign.7 -
So I have this habit of googling weird things, obvious things and random things. Over time, I've stuck to using incognito all the time because Google suggestions and targetted ads annoy me (almost) like nothing else. It's a really nice thing to know that some algorithm out there is not judging you.
On the downside, you'll have to constantly explain to people around you that you're not a porn addict. :/3 -
Not sure if this is against the rules (can’t find it) but taking the risk to post this here.
I’m android(kotlin/java) and Golang Developer looking for a remote job in any company. I’m really bored and tired of not doing anything daily.

I highly recommend https://www.codegrepper.com/ (if you're not using it, you may really like it), I'm paying for GitHub Copilot for use in vscode and Android Studio and find it very useful, and now playing with ChatGPT as a google search/chrome extension https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...
With Google Graph and the combination of everything mentioned above life is pretty good :D6 -

I’m just thinking of building an online chat system. It’s like a clone version of discord but in my way and I don’t really have that knowledge about creating chat systems.
My question is how chat systems are made (I did use google and I didn’t find anything useful) i need someone to explain how a chat system works5 -
New Pixel 4a arrived... Hate the defaults... Gestures... I guess at least there was an option to get the buttons back though had to figure out how to open Chrome and Google it.
Now I just need to really for like... The whole day for our to finish downloading 141 apps from backup... And well I'll prolly uninstall half of them...3 -
Only for german speakers... or anyone that really wants to play with google translate to decipher this.
ChatGPT... easily lied to and persuaded to go against its bs safeguards... still cant figure out how to give popular lyrics, or admit it doesnt know... so it makes up songs. Quite amusing ones tbh

Started openshift to make send some of apps to cloud, damn it is too annoying. Everything is like 4x time consuming and hard, documentation really lacks, you google some errors? well answer is in red hat site and you can only see that if you are paid subscriber, issues in github are closed randomly(generally like we are going to fix this so no open issues??-written in 2017). If i had any other chance i would take it, like instantly.

Looking for speech-to-text library python for a home automation project. SpeechRecognition doesn't really work out for me and Google won't give me any other good alternatives. Thanks!3

So let's say I kinda came up with a pattern/architecture for Unity scripting which I find really useful and elegant.
It uses some features which are quite new, and I can't find anything similar on Google. So I suspect I might actually have invented something new.
What should I do?6 -

About the one ranting about people who don't know how to use Google:

I really really really hate Edge! What kind of web browser doesn't have a proper address box where a url is a url and not a search phrase directing you to fucking Google, the most evil search engine of them all.3

I read this rant about IE (https://www.devrant.io/rants/514347) but could not relate to it (I use Linux MS suckers!) So I thought I'd post a browser rant of my own, and this time it is about Chrome (or Blink since it also affects Opera). Whenever I start typing localhost Chrome suggests "localhost" but when I click this suggestion it takes me to a Google search result when all I really wanted was to test a webapp on my dev box. This is very annoying every time.

When you click on a link in google and get taken to "wwwqa.companyname.com". I think they're really really confident in their QA environments ;)

Google Search Console insists there is "content wider than screen" on a one-pager I did which works very well on all tested sizes and devices, and scores 90+ on Google PageSpeed Insights.
"Validation failed - see details."
Clicked on "see details", and only saw the 1 URL I already knew, which seems to be working fine for everyone. If Google detetcs an actual issue, it would be really helpful to provide some details, otherwise this kind of false-positive crap only serves to care less about their tools (which is a bit of a shame, as they do provide a lot of value most of the time).2 -
Hey guys quick simple question for you guys who use storage solutions like google drive, one drive, dropbox, etc: what's a feature you'd really love to have that the cloud storage you are using doesn't have.
I want to compile a series of answers on this topic.4 -
I didn't get a Google foobar invite for all my years of working on professional projects, but I did when I was trying to put together a web scraper because I was bored. Anyways I got a job shortly afterwards so didn't really bother with it.2

I really am in a love/hate relationship with programming...
I had some free time so I decided to do the Google foo bar challenge. For testing purpose, I code in sublime text and then copy the code in the browser.
Yesterday, I spent most of the afternoon doing one challenge. I figured out how to approach the problem, which was kinda easy, and coded it in about 10 minutes. For some reason, what worked perfectly in sublime text worked without throwing any errors in the browser, but 4 of the 5 test done by Google failed.
Today, after spending a good hour tweaking some stuff in the hope that it would work, the browser editor started throwing indentation errors...
Deleted the code in the browser, copy-pasted the exact same code from sublime : All test passed!
That's a couple of hours I'm never getting back. -
Go is the first language with it's own dedicated hate page. Just go to golang.sucks
The anti-awesome github backing the website is also something I've never seen before.
Is GoLang really just a hype and a language created of retarted developers at Google ?2 -
Whenever I have to use anything new, I just follow the requirements - Googling through the whole way, rather than doing a course first. I get really insecure if someone asks whether 'Best Practices' has been used. Sometimes I wonder where would I be without Google and SO. I don't even wanna talk about Maths. I suck at that.1

How many of us consider assitance like siri, google assistance as a real project? I found really few in numbers4

DigitalOcean, really just because of the pricing. I will say though that kubernetes in Google cloud is much better than what DO offers, so if cost wasn't an issue I'd probably prefer it

It's really frustrating how irrelevant the results on google are.

Why the fuck is it Impossible to get crisp font rendering on chrome (widows desktop), Firefox looks sooooo much more crispy... Get your shit together Google, also while your at it, catch up to Firefox with WebAssembly loading time.
And Firefox, it would be really nice if you could start supporting brotli compression... Just saying.2 -
searched for a query at google, and it returned only 5 responses. really feel like one in a million this time.
Can't be more sad than this.

So Google create inbox, a pretty good email client with nice interface and features, it works really well and has people using it. Why the fuck they decide to close a working thing? Gmail is a big piece of shit, the interface is awful, can't group mails correctly and lacks a lot of inbox functions.
They can't at least give you an inbox-like Gmail view?4 -
So I’m bit desperate for headless chrome documentation. Went to SO. Was about to ask yes I was about to do tough step. Ask a question.
I clicked blah blah, searched topic: Headless chrome documentation. Nothing previous was there.
So I clicked to proceed to write a question.
And then I asked myself do I really want to put dirt on myself now?
I freakin left and I’m asking our colleague that worked at google, and also I’m going to rather ask directly google for official docs since there is nothing only blogs...1 -
Sure would be nice if Google could give us an API for Play Music much like how Spotify has one... it's really hurting me.1

How possible is it to have a decentralised internet?
Because currently we have an almost centralised net... Where the major players are Google, Amazon, Alibaba and the likes acting as data holders.
This really bothers me and it's fair to say that the original dream of an internet for the people, by the people, is long gone.
Can we foresee a p2p in place of this monopolitic centralised internet?4 -
Would wearing a Google tee on the first day of my internship(elsewhere) put forward the wrong impression? Like it's a startup and the culture (supposedly) is really chill but I'm not too sure.1

There is fun in using Google Colab.
They unveiled free TPUs on Colab.
It took me an hour of really slow training to realise that even if TPU is enabled, you have to code it explicitly to enable it.
After an hour I realised I was using only the CPU 😂😂

For Google coming up with a new OS is nothing more than producing a new brand of wine or perfume, Android, Chrome OS and now Andromeda? and what? also rumors for some freaking Fuchsia or whatever? really Google?

Hi, has anyone worked under Google ITRP program? If yes, then how was the experience and what questions do they generally ask in interviews?
They came to my college offering the ITRP program and I'm really really interested to get into it.

"Google has the functionality of a really complicated Swiss Army knife, but the home page is our way of approaching it closed. It’s simple, it’s elegant, you can slip it in your pocket, but it’s got the great doodad when you need it. A lot of our competitors are like a Swiss Army knife open – and that can be intimidating and occasionally harmful." - Marissa Mayer1

Hi all,
I've got a question about Google Maps and Contacts that's driving me up the wall.
I'm trying to add a business with address, phone number, website etc. to contacts from Google Maps.
There is an option that looks like it should do it, but when I select it, it just tries making a new contact that I have to manually type out?
I'm wondering if you guys have come across something that would allow me to do this without having to copy/paste every damn detail.
If it helps, I'm on LineageOS 14.1 with Open Gapps... -
Lol. Another day, another (or just the usual) big tech company just takes us from behind.
This time? Oh Google is just spamming me because they "found malware" on a tracking code. There's nothing. Except competition.
They had to email me about every "malware" in EVERY fucking workspace version. In random order, eventually effecting the live version. Thanks. I really needed those 30 emails to know. -
could anyone help me calculating costs for AWS and Google Colab Services? I find it quite intransparent...
i would like to host 1x Python App which runs once a day or week (API call, enrichment uf JSON, JSON 2 CSV, FTP transfer). runtime is probably a few seconds, something between 1 and 5.
in AWS i created a Lambda function and for scheduling i guess i need CloudWatch. what really grind my gears is the combination of free contingent and paied service - i really don't have an overview right now, so my question here: how could i calculate it and what would be the monthly/yearly costs?
in Google Colab created a notebook and for scheduling i would need Google Cloud Scheduler. as far as i understand the hosting of the notebook is for free and the costs of cloud scheduler is $0.10 per job per project per month. 3 are for free. so 1 project, 1 job = scheduler for free?
Also, i'm open for other services such as digital ocean droplets or similar.
thx in advance for your help!8 -

Every day I’ll open up wordle, but before I enter a guess I’ll google “What is today’s wordle answer?” Then I’ll just enter in the answer to get a 1/6 every time. After that I’ll post my score to twitter and when people accuse me of cheating because I get a 1/6 every day I just lie and say “no I’m really smart that’s how I knew what the word was.”
Is that cheating??9 -
Doesn’t it bother anyone else that both HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 were both SPDY and QUIC at Google first? Yeah I know ideas have to “come from somewhere” and I guess it’s not really any different than the AT&T/Bell Labs/MIT of the past; but something doesn’t feel right.10

I had some fun times in college.
Me: This book is too outdated, we need updated information for the video capture card presentation. I'd do it but this time I'm busy.
Teammate: I'll do it.
Me: oh wow really? Thanks!
Next week...
Teammate: here, take a look. I updated the information
Me: Yeah, I can see that all of those 10+ year old models have some fresh google search information in them. Thanks. -
Does anyone have experience with geographical routing? I need to find road distances between multiple locations and my total permutations for that are more than 100,000 so using Google distance matrix API is going to get really expensive I think. I am thinking about setting up an OSRM server. Any suggestions? Any alternatives or comments on the relative difference in the accuracy of results from Google and OSRM.1

Got a quick question here. If I have a program that uses the Google Maps API for it's location services, the Google Maps API becomes a dependency for my program right?
Just wondering if the term "dependency" can really be attached to any service/library/program that someone's application might require.5 -
Guys!! I'm stuck with a problem in an android app. I want to display video on a VideoViewer. What I really want is to test the software, to see if it can run and display several formats.
The thing is: when I start to play the video file (.mp4 or .3gp) just appears a popup saying "Can't play this video". I don't know what to do. StackOverflow doesn't really help with this, nor any tutorial that I found on Google.
Any tips for a Android newbie? -
I really hope that Google maps puts his optimization aside and just take me home on a good road.. and not from somewhere Goofy!!

I'm the only one which finds really frustrating when you return to a framework or a language after a year in which you haven't used it and you're forced to Google how to do any trivial thing with it again?
It must be the 6th time I search how to do things with the C# library System.Text.Regex. -
Hello devRant!
Google is coming up with all useless answers so...
I have several module pages in AspX. A lot of them share the same variables that they each instantiate on load of that page like:
Var SaveText = <%=Lan.SaveText%>;
But if I put those into a javascript file to share it, instantiation fails because the <%=%>-values only work within the AspX page.
Is there really no way around this except putting it in the master page (which I really don't want to for other reasons)17 -
!dev, sort of
So, apparently my Play Store settings get reset when I restart my phone, so Google decided to update Google Keyboard to Gboard for me (and god-fucking-dammit, that shit is absolutely useless to me). I can find older .apks on websites like APKmirror for Google Kinstall but they won't install, saying that "it seems like the package is corrupt". I'm not sure exactly why this might be happening, but according to APKmirror’s FAQ it might have something to do with cryptographic signatures or that a newer version is already installed on the device. Gboard is disabled and I assume that should be enough for that, and I don't know if it would even detect it as the same app in the first place, so my best guess is that it’s got to do with the former which is why I'm turning to you guys.
Does anyone have advice for a solution? I don't have any problems getting another keyboard either if needed, but I would really like something that both has separated layouts per language, as well as a similar swipe-to-type function, since excessive tapping really aggravates my CTS. :/ Any suggestions?1 -
The new iOS translation app which ships with the OS, is a pile of crap!
The worst thing is, when it fails to find a translation, it just shows the original word without letting you know.
So it lets you wonder if it's really the same word in this language or if it the app trying to cover its shitty translation capabilities! (It's probably the latter)
Fuck! Now I have to go back to the google translator which is half a GB or so 🤬 -
Wanted to discuss about this AMP framework by Google. I have developed with it for my company and have been having mixed feelings about it.
On one end, it gives you the power of Google cache, declarative layout and all.
But still, it seems to be too restrictive and filled with bizarre rules that often could have been avoided if they just made guidelines for normal "web pages" to be better and not yet another framework to build "AMP pages".
One more (and probably the biggest) thing. AMP is Open Source... But can it be really considered Open if the biggest player in its development is a single corporation?4
