Bored, stuck in a long ass meeting. When suddenly someone brings up the program I made. People start complementing it.
Today's gonna be a good day.4 -
When people tell me their problems I immediately start coming up with solutions when really they just want sympathy.15
-
Boss: Every day is a new opportunity to start fresh
Me: Can we start over this project because I fucked it up and I don't want to clean it
Boss: No4 -
"But I don't know where to start..."
"... just start typing, be willing to mess up, and if you get lost just start over with better understanding from messing up. Eventually it'll work."1 -
You ever sit down to start working on a project, get all your imports and variables set up, and then just completely lose all motivation to even press a key?11
-
Instead of splitting up engineers by team, they should start by splitting up those who prefer the lights on, and those who want them off.
Then we can all be happy.7 -
Just finished reading this gem from start to end. It is over 20 years old and it is crazy how it is still up to date and applicable. Great work.8
-
Is it weird to like being in the office a couple hours before everyone else shows up so I can start my day with peace and quiet?13
-
Just finished all the form function, time to clean up I guess.
Did you guys like to write it clean from start or do it later at the end?38 -
Technical Founder at today's meeting: "All of you guys have work-life balance. It shouldn't be like that. We need act like a startup. You guys need to work really hard. This guy (pointing at me) once worked 10 hours each day, where I worked 16 hours. We really need to move fast."
I'll just leave this words here.13 -

I'm gonna start a software company and cleverly split up the work into pieces so that I can present them to potential employees as "coding challenges" during the interview and never actually hire them.3
-
My first time using Mac:
"Where's the Start? Wtf is command!? Why are the windows maximizing halfway... How do I rename this file? How do I freakin' maximize this app!? I give up..."19 -
Start-up: hires 3 junior devs to save money.
Start-up: expects things to get done faster-- BUT-- Start-up keeps adding things to the TO-DO list and backlog-- i.e. it's all relative!!
Start-up: gets angry at 3 junior devs why they can't deliver when they keep adding tasks and ask we fall behind.
Dev team: "Seriously? You hire more devs to finish tasks faster, but you keep adding more than are being finiahed-- obviously it's gonna take longer now regardless"
Git --pull life together2 -
Work at a start-up they said. It will be fun they said.
It's awesome, the learning curve is unbelievable.
But your personal life? Destroyed.
Weekends? Sleeping more than 6-7 hours a day? Forget about it.4 -
Every time I mess up my git branch I usually find that its pretty futile to fix it with fancy commands like 'git reset', 'git prune', 'git rebase', etc. I usually find it easier to just start over from scratch.
They should really add a command for that
'git fuck-it-start-over'9 -
Ummmmm sorry windows but I think you might have fucked up while “counting”.. the drive isn’t even 4TB to start.
I’m really confused how this could occur lol10 -
why is it so hard to convince people to start using slack chat and giving up sending internal emails?10
-
I go to college online and I was really excited to start my classes for my major as I finally wrapped up general ed classes. This is a week 1 assignment for Introduction to Computer Science....14
-
1. Get a glass of water.
2. Start coding.
3. Solve a problem.
3. Get up and go get another glass of water.
4. Now you have two glasses of water.2 -
Everyone has something to learn and teach. Start up a blog, submit to conference proposals, etc. If you're learning it then someone else has to learn it in the future, so make it easier for them.1
-
-- Access colleague system
-- Create a screen saver with an "Updating your Windows" snapshot.
-- Add shortcut key to start screen saver.
Anytime I noticed that they left their desk for a brief... I'll head up to their PC and press the key combination to start up the screen saver... Then return to my seat and put on my sorry face. 😒6 -
Think of an idea that can really benefit others.
Start working on the project and come up with a working prototype.
Complete the project 98%
Get bored of the project.
Move on to another project.5 -
Start to work, open laptop, open IDE, open editor, excited for coding, end up with youtube, fuck my life3
-
Well , working in a start up is fun at first but when work piles up and revisions always happens you know your in a tight spot.10
-
Opening up a view file, and first thing I see is a function accepting 13 parameters.
I don't know where to start, so much wrong..
Kill me.5 -
When you are so fed up with your software you start designing hardware.
Ok honestly I just wanted to show of my modeling skills. Going to 3d print this soon.11 -
Life is mostly about waiting.
Waiting for code to compile.
Waiting for payment confirmation.
Waiting for food.
Waiting for gas to fill up tank.
Waiting for lights to go green.
Waiting for beer.
Waiting for waiter.
Waiting for call.
Waiting for school to finish or start.
Waiting for exam.
Waiting for job.
Waiting for application to start.
Waiting inside prison.
Waiting inside workplace.
Waiting for summer or winter.
Waiting for movie to start.
Waiting for girl to dress up.
Waiting for birthday.
Waiting for birth.
Waiting for death.
Fucking timers everywhere.
Someone got big sense of humor when developing this world.7 -
Hello devRant world, from Stockholm!
I've been lurking around for a while now and feel time has come to open up and start contributing :)
Thank you for being there and for lifting our spirits up, through good and dark times, equally.

1. Start programming to solve a beautiful problem.
2. Setting up my IDE.
3. Creating nem project.
4. Start coding, but dig into first little problem.
5. After 10 hours give up.4 -
1. Mailserver is down.
2. Write a ticket to provider.
3. Can't get a reponse because of 1.
4. ?????
5. Profit
6. Scratch that. We're a start-up.5 -
Finding a memory leak is the very definition of the journey where you start with "I hate everything" and end up with "I am GOD"3

Designer sends me mock up. I send out to client to review before we start to develop. (Mock up has lorem ipsum for paragraph text in one spot) A few minutes later client calls freaking out "Why is my whole site in Spanish, I don't speak Spanish!"7
-
I'm planning on making a start-up. The brand name will be 'Void'. And motto:l is 'Because Nothing is Better Than Something'. I'm not kidding.
Just want to know if that's a good idea 😂😂10 -
Boss giving a me a lift to work cause he wants to start work earlier since our ad revenue plunged during the weekends. One fucked up day coming up.3

* Sets up some software
"Alright, and now to start the database"
* types "sudo systemctl start po-"
* hits tab -> poweroff.target
* Enter
...fuck me
little did I know, the database was already started...4 -
Everytime a non tech friend start a conversation like "hello my lovely companian, I think I forgot my Instagram password.."
Always ends up with "..so can you hack it for me"
-_-7 -
That feeling when you dream about the perfect solution of the programming problem you just had, you get up and just start coding for hours.

!rant
In the past week I simultaneously got my degree in the mail and landed a pretty sweet job at a startup that I start working for tomorrow. Things are looking up!5 -
Hope it didn't show up so far.
Don't want to start a war.. But does it say something about the efficiency of javascript? :D 145k lines to fly to the moon... 1,5billion to run a website? Legit.8 -
Today I was continuing my Ruby script for file encryption.
I added some features like Picture Encryption and Bookmarks.
Then I tried to start it to make sure it doesn't fuck up.
ruby PGCrypt.rb
No changes reflected.
w0t.jpg
Start debugging
Browses SO and DDG like a maniac
Reinstalls Ruby
Guess what happened.
My shell was in the wrong folder and I ran the old testing script.

During resignation discussion with delivery manager at my previous organisation, he told me that I should join a start up. (I was planning to do that, and he knew somehow.)
He warned me in weird concerning way that if I join a start up, I will always be in stress. I will have high BP. And sperm count will reduce. I might never be able to produce child. And similar scary stuff.
Weird bald dude scared me for second there.
PS - I did join the start up and my BP is fine and so is my sperm count.6 -
Almost 7am. My body is now used to going to sleep this late. I have to start waking up at that time soon.
This is what holidays do to me.6 -
Mom: My printer won't start. Can you FIX it?
Me: Mom, I am a coder, I don't know jack about hardware.
A week later....
Mom: My printer won't start. Can you FIX it?
Me: This question is marked as duplicate and closed as off-topic. 🤖
Hangs up.7 -
So, a few weeks ago I asked you guys what would you do if you were to quit your current job. I attempted a start-up with an old "friend" of mine.
He was very enthusiastic and hardworking at the beginning. However he received a job offer from somewhere and told me that he would work there just until we found the company officially and then quit and work full time on the project.
Well... I put around 300 hours into the project and developed the system, did most of my part according to the plan but the guy didn't deliver anything.
Turned out he had another secret partner whom he first introduced me as his mentor. I had my suspicions and suddenly shut down API servers, project management domain and mail server. Suddenly the quiet guy called me asking if I was alright and everything was fine.
Then, nothing happened. He went radio silence until I called him last night and he picked up the phone drunk and mumbled something like "I'm aware of you being a victim" then went to "you're passive aggresive" or something like that and I said nothing, just hung up.
I think you can figure out what went down on the other side and I'd like to hear your scenarios.
PS: now I have another start-up idea: I'm gonna pick up a flamethrower and burn the world while laughing histerically. Anyone who'd like to join is welcome.3 -
Hurray! Finally the IOS devRant Supporter subscription link has been approved by Apple and works. I joined at 4 am today. Great way to start the day. Keep up the great work David and Tim.

MOTHERFUCKER!!
Woke up this morning with a plan to backup and export all my shit. Sort my files and get ready for a fresh start.
This morning my laptop died irreparably! Winning at life. 👌🏼1 -
Sometimes I just hit a "developer's block", when I'm just blankly staring at my screen wondering where did I start and how did I end up here!?
It is hell frustrating!!!6 -
Pathetic dev moments: Any time my macbook fans rev up, I worry that I'm working my baby too hard, so I start closing applications.3

Why is it always on Fridays that some server decides to start acting up?
I want to start my weekend, damnit! -
My boyfriend and I just got home from a seminar and had a nice teachings and talks. As the speaker ended the talk, she asked each participants as to what is our ultimate goal.
G1: to be an able lawyer
B1: civil engineer!
B2: to pass the licensure examination
BF (God's Gift): businessman
Me (mind): Gray hat
Me (...): to have a start-up tech company
Since college, I really wanted to have a start-up company in due time. ^_^1 -
One of the funniest things ever:
Reading this:
"<Dev job> for fast growing start up" 😂😂😂🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕😂😂😂😂😂1 -
It's a week late notice but...
I got my first actual-real-paid-not start-up dev job!
And I have no one to celebrate it with... Toronto..?7 -
We act like a start-up and use agile practices.... Now we need you to give us a date for all these features.
-
Worst codding interruptions? That's easy: fucking meetings.
You know they're coming up. They start to drain your focus. You double check the clock/start time. You ask yourself if you were supposed to prepare anything. You typically waste an hour of your time over something that could have been a fucking e-mail (or doesn't even matter at all). You come back to your desk, and your focus is broken and you wonder when the next meeting is coming up.2 -
I hate school, but I wish I finished collage…
Just to imagine all the free time I had, I if I had it now I would do so much... But I left and Got employed, and now I have to watch myself getting fucked over salary wise and not learning anything new at work. Constantly being called junior just makes me wish I stayed in school. And use the extra time to do my own company
So if I had the chance , I'd go back... But I have bills to pay! (Sad)9 -
The year of 2018 is slowly coming to it end, so how about summing it up in a few keywords ?
I start : Bitcoin, Spectre/Meltdown, GDPR, Facebook-out-Linux-in, A.I., Elon Musk, Corporate fuckups(fb,g..), Cheap & Good smartphones
Just a few random ones, hope you come up with better summary:)15 -
Once again, another weekend I promised myself to start programming projects, only to step through a worm hole and wake up on Monday.
-
*starts to work on a new project while others remain unfinished*
*bulb lights up* oh look a new project idea
*goes on to start on that one instead*
Being a student developer is awkward.3 -
Am I the only one who thinks Silicon Valley is extremely overrated? A ridiculously high cost of living, just for a start up? During start up phase, wouldn't conserving money be a better idea?6
-
Why do people like hiring managers at companies seem to think that because you are paid to code you spend your spare time coding?
You don't expect a surgeon to operate all day then go home and randomly start cutting people up, so don't expect a code surgeon to spend all day coding to go clock off the start hacking away at shit either!10 -
You guys converted me.
I "grew up" with Visual Studio (from VS 2005). My programming career started with VBA. (All C#)
Occasionally tried to program android with eclipse... never worked out.
I know java a little bit.
To day I decided (thanks to your rants) to start a VM with ubuntu and explore Linux and start with C.7 -
Ugh first week in Google Udacity scholarship and they all just directly want to start a start up 🙄😮😒
Yeah best of luck with that shit with your amazing html skills...2 -
bro just learn C bro I promise it's all smooth sailing bro haha lol just take up HTML with CSS bro its a piece of cake bro what bro lol just start coding up differential equations with numpy library haha its so simple bro just start with Ruby bro it will take only couple days bro what lol bro take this aeronautical course on how to code an airplane simulation bro its so simple bro just start algorithms on cryptography bro its so easy i cant bro just start writing drivers for printers bro haha lol just start writing a bootloader for a new Linux distro bro lol haha easy bro just make a billion dollar company bro haha its so simple.

sys.exit (0)
my reason being... i resigned! and starting a new exciting journey in DevOps for a Start Up1 -
Those corperate slow laptops which has preinstalled software on it. Especially the antivirus which decides to take up all memory to take a scan on 08:00 when you start up.
Im really close to throwing this piece if shit through the window...6 -
So I always start learning JS frameworks and end up getting confused by their syntax among other things. Do you guys know of any good websites to learn vanilla JS? My problem is that I probably don't know enough of vanilla and end up getting flustered.11
-
Programming helps me cope with my problems. Whenever I'm feeling down, I just fire up Rider, Unity and start working on my own little universe.
Game development eases my feelings.2 -
So apparently Package Manager Console adds 6 hours to the boot time of Visual Studio...
I was wondering why it took so long to start up. -
Go to the office, start the computer, get some coffee, open up Eclipse...
Java.lang.NullPointerException
Fuck this shit.12 -
When you work super hard for 3 years to acquire skills to get a job at your Dream Startup
Then finally after joining,
WITHIN 3 MONTHS, unfortunately, you become a victim of MASS LAYOFFS :|
Since your company is shutting down that particular business
The fuckkk :/5 -
Why do theoretical computer science and maths lectures mostly start at 8 am. I am a nocturnal creature to me is like having to wake up at 3 am for others. There are other kinds of people that like to get up early so here is a suggestion: Why don't we agree that all lectures start at 11:00 earliest? It is a good time in the day for a lot of people and I would have the time to inject myself with some Mate tea.8

One job I picked up was for an IoT Start Up. It was quite interesting work, reporting to the technical director, who was an electronics engineer, who was designing the hardware himself, they had a couple of firmware guys already, and just needed someone to take care of the software.
So they said they needed something in Azure that they could stream their data to and provide analytics for their clients. It had to be Azure, and it had to be Azure Native, and was to be Multi-client, as they had a deal with Microsoft to showcase how well Azure works in the IoT space at an exhibition/conference in 3 months time.
So I worked flat out for 3 months, on a whole variety of technology, from C++ to get the radio packets from their IoT chip, Python to run on the hub to take the data from the C++ and stream it to the cloud, Azure IoT Hubs in every continent to receive the data and store it an a Cosmos DB, and then Power BI analytics wrapped up in an Angular front end that the clients could log into.
Got it finished 2 days before the show, and they were so pleased I got flown business class to Singapore to be on the stand and talk to customers.
The first sign of trouble was when we arrived at the show to find we just had one of those little circular tables with two stools in the middle of the floor, about two feet across and no power.
No problem, I was able to sort that, swapping laptops in and out.
Microsoft were really happy with what we had, and couldn't believe I had thrown it all together in 3 months.
We picked up a potential customer for the system, a major Asian Telecoms company.
Then when we got home, the CEO swooped in. I had never met this guy before. Imagine one of the VC guys from Silicon Valley, or the CEO from the IT Crowd. You get the picture. Could talk the hind leg of a donkey, and real street smart, but no brains. He insisted on "taking it from here" and flew alone to strike the deal with the customer. Came back with an MOU in his pocket and said to me, their guys will be in touch with you.
Then I got a call. Can you send us the source code and tell us how what servers we have to run this on?
Um, its cloud native.
No, we can't use a cloud it has to be on our servers - your CEO told us that was no problem..
He hadn't even taken the trouble to find out what it was we had built, and what he was selling.1 -
Don't you just hate it when you're getting fat because you're a developer who is lazy to go to the gym then start developing some messed up health problems and always feel shitty. Smh11
-
Thanks stupid workmates who fuck up the project first and then 4 hours before the deadline tell you without any feelings "it's late, I'm going to sleep".
NO FUCK YOU GET YOUR ASS HERE AND START HELPING ME4 -
Never start watching a series while gradle is building. You end up not finishing coding your app on time instead you watch a whole season before you get back to coding.3
-
I wish, I wish, I could finish off projects that I started even if that means I cannot touch new projects.
Fucking takes me ages to get motivation to start something, but then I start too many things and end up demotivated so I scrap all of them and the cycle continues.6 -
My process (still going on):
*Pick a topic/language/anything.
*Read up as much as I can until my eyes start glazing over.
*Try to implement something.
*Screw up.
*Feel bad. Repeat until screw-ups reasonably reduced.
*Success???2 -
Give up, start notebook, cry, yell, scream, pull hair out, close notebook, come back in a few months and finish it in one day. 😐4
-
Always keep trying, never give up on the bugs you have.even if you have to start over again.
Someone once asked me:
Why do we fall?
I answered him:
To rise up again even stronger.4 -
Before devRant:
* Sit back and enjoy the night watching series/movies*
* Chills in the weekends*
- It's nice to code at work
😊
After devRant:
*anxiety building up*
*start sweating*
Should I code all time?
(0_0')
When I get home I'll start a project7 -
Happiness is getting free T-shirt from a start up from different country for just signing up their product...
My best wishes to the company..
And thanks for sending it..5 -
Interviewed for a backend position a few days ago, but ended up getting a full-stack job!
Pretty excited to start this new gig, coworkers seem to be nice and the stack is great too.10 -
So my startup warned me last night that I would have to pitch. Goddamn guys, really?! Pitch for a minute in front of ... PEOPLE?! WTF were they thinking?! I'm a fucking dev, not a HR guy for crying out loud3

Building an app in Cordova.
Customer request:
Make a fullscreen view to come up on every app start. It should have a button with the text "Start" on it to get into the app.

Petition for devrant to start using iso dates. Or at least pick up the format from the device's locale. But preferably iso. Seeing m/d/y does my head in.12

Have you ever taken on so much work to the point where you just start tearing up because you want to sleep?2
-
I placed a Virus Found pop-up message at all the schools computer and run the program at start when I was at High School. It was fun :)3

Start-up life.
Learning to code but must do website.
Must learn illustrator....
Can`t even select a fucking circle without it becoming a splatterod non sensical shapes.
Been at it for 2 weeks.
Boss/friend like. Hey i know its the holidays but lets catch up to see what youve done....
Me. Well... I can fuck up circles ;)9 -
that feeling when you start looking at code after dinner, correct a bug or two, start implementing new features, tweak the code a little bit, you are really focus in your coding... then look out the window and realize the sun is about to come up. it's great 🤓
-
Left my previous cushy job for a start-up and a paycut. Can't work in a project that still uses CVS and being the only one who knows what git is.1
-
Starting a new project:
1.Think of a new/exciting idea
2.Start imagining and planning in my head
3.Start working on my idea
4.Give up mid-way
5. Get depressed
6. Get back at it way behind schedule and still not complete it
7. Go back to step 1 except that's basically how I start something new and not just a project :)4 -
Ffs😪, Google play rating is worst than the University GPA, you get 10 5 star rating it goes up 0.1 you get 1 start rating it goes down 1.5 😂😂
-
Almost gave up on my first LFS build but I re-read the first 5 chapters and used my backed up toolchain to continue chapter 6. Luckily, I have passed the point I was stuck at :) glad I didnt give up or start 100% over.3
-
I was just asked to correct a bug in a form, so I opened up Visual Studio, loaded the projekt, and opened up the code for the form to start debugging:
3500 lines of code in one form!
Encapsulation and classes are fresh ideas...from 30 or 40 years ago!2 -
When some body walks up to you open this in full screen and start typing.
The will think that you are a hacker :D

Fed up with my windows becoming too slow, I decided to go for a fresh start.
Now it's stuck here from past 1 hour4 -
when I first saw this trixk to speed up the db:
1. stop mysql
2. cat dbfile > /dev/null
3. start mysql....
and it works...14 -
School's intro to computers, when I was 12, was the formal beginning. But I think the real start was before then; learning how to give people an order/direction they can't possibly fuck up.6
-
As we grow up, we feel cooler and smarter and wiser everyday......
Until someday, you start growing old instead, and start feeling stupider and lamer day by day...
You don’t even notice how stealthily this line was crossed....4 -
When you are retard and cross TX/RX lines, desperate measures will have to follow, like terminating hardware UART on start-up so that you can bit-bang over crossed TX/RX yourself...11
-
Who can come up with the best DevOps Power Ballad? I'll start off:
Phil Collins - Something happened on the way to production.
GO!12 -
When that shit start up reject you and instead of being polite you pull their shit app apart at the seams.2
-
Happened in December, had devs from "big" companies coming over to our start up and doing a sprint with us. Very humbling 🙂2
-
That moment when you sit to code and start learning a new thing, but the installation and prerequisites take up all of your time. *Sighs*1
-
Reach office early and you know what stack over flow is down god save me it's 15 minutes already some one please up it.
Bad start for monday.1 -
I just finished up figuring out this long ass riddle. Perhaps, y'all would be interested in taking a nab at it.
https://challenge.hiringsolved.com/...15 -
Excited to start learning some backend for the first time while building a side project! First experience setting up a dB, map tile server, api, geocoder, etc. to make something completely self-hosted! 😊2
-
Firefox by far :)
At least as a program I start up my self.
I do use a fair number if other to but no other comes close.1 -
Really need to find a small project to work on, every other small project I start turn's itself up to 11 in scope and ends up getting shelved -.-
Why can't i just keep things small!
Plus any other project that stays small ends up requiring something complicated that I've never done, why do I do this to myself...4 -
Wake up in the middle of the night with a crazy idea. Get headphones and start coding. I don't get much sleep.
-
Mornings before starting office work
During start of lockdown: Wake up early, freshen up, do daily exercise, get sunlight from the window, write an article or work on side project for an hour, then start off to work...
5 months after lockdown: Wake up just 5 minutes before office work, brush my teeth and start off with office work...5 -
Had design call with designer, myself and client. At end of call we tell client we're going to send a mock up and that it's just going to be a flat image/JPG, because we don't start developing the site until mock up is 100% approved. I sent mock up to client once it's finished.
Client: "Why isn't this working? I can't click anything and nothing moves."5 -
Pseudo-flexible working hours suck. I get the "choice" to start work between 7:30-9:30 AM. I'm a night owl so waking up at 6AM is not an option. Why can't they just allow to start at 10AM and finish at 6:30PM? Between 7:30 & 9:30 is peak rush hour and I'm bound to lose 1h30 in traffic for 30km (normally it would take half an hour) and start my workday pissed off.6
-
It’s always hard for me to get up and start coding each morning, but once I do I always feel good about the work I’m doing.1
-
You know you are way too deep in your project when you start typing "i-n-s" for Instagram and then end up typing insmod in the URL bar instead!
Goddammit Yocto! Why have you rewired my brain? -
I was booting Ubuntu into my pendrive, it was almost completed but suddenly an error pops up.
- error the device is in use by another process
Guess what, I've to start the whole process again !! -
Legend says that if you concentrate and listen for it, you can almost hear @kiki conjuring up the next few words that will start a riot on this cursed land of devRant.2
-
-start a startup ground up
-make more connections with people
-doing a meaningful life
-and... Finding love of my life as well -
Finally, I got my laptop back after 4 gruelling days of separation with a new disc and more RAM!!!
I can't wait to finish up installing all the programmes I need to start writing code!!!7 -
Started up KiTTY to connect to my virtual test server per usual when I couldn't establish a connection.
Nothing too unusual so I do the typical troubleshooting I make sure host, port and authentication is all correct and it is. So now I open the display for the virtual server and start looking at ip info, host info, checking ports and everything is completely fine.
Now I'm getting frustrated so I start running things like configtest in apache, using systemctl to check the services status, even restarting virtualbox in my windows 10 devpc. Still cannot connect!
I start feeling hopeless and just shut everything down, the whole operating system.
*takes breath*
Computer boots up and I start my usual thing of creating workspaces, opening editors, starting servers, etc.
I open KiTTY again and launch my virtual test server..

Somethings you just can't fix without a reboot. -
Diffi-Hellman is actual magic. You can exchange keys over an unencrypted channel and end up with guarenteed unique keys, on which you can start a secure channel
Like how??17 -
You know you're bored when you boot up a random arch iso and just start seeing how fast you can break an install .-.4

I hate application launchers.
When i start an application, i WANT IT TO START. Also, splash screens. Fuck your 5second branded splash screen when your cocksucking application has the fucking loading footprint of MS Notepad.2 -

That feeling when you are about to add a new feature to a project and when you start reading the spaghetti mess the previous developer puked when he/she was monkeying around, your blood pressure goes up, you lose a bit more hope in humanity, you start thinking about buying a gun, and start theorizing how torture could potentially be a valid recourse in some cases.3

I start reading about it, from their website, forums, blogs, etc.
Next thing I usually do is to take a look at stuff made of that tech and mess around to see what it looks like.
Then I pick a book about the subject, set up the basics and start from the very beginning, even if the prologue starts with "programming is..."
At some point I start to connect concepts previously seen in the first step with the chapter I'm in, or even identify elements discovered in the second step.

Stake in a Start-up

P.S: I've studied the market as well as the proposal and have planned on working on it.6 -
How long do you guys tend to keep SQL migration scripts around?
Obviously they don't use up much disk space, but they do start to create clutter in a project4 -
I was just thinking; Since now I am closer to graduating and I'll be joining the corporate industry. Which company is most preferable as a junior developer; What I mean is, would it be better to start working for a start-up company or go for a well known and established company?
because what I am thinking, with the start-up company there is more room for growth (position and experience), unlike the well-established company where you are given mediocre work (I think that's what they do anyway) since you are still new and coming straight out of university. I'd appreciate some advice and maybe some other people can benefit as well.1 -

Any technical cofounders here? I've been offered to be a technical co-founder for a new venture. This is a venture that has the same founding team as the startup I'm working with for last 3 years or so. The current venture may be acquired in the near future with the founding team exiting.
Now my question (s) are these:
1. I know the team. We're friendly. But until now the relationship has been that of an employer-employee. What all should i consider before taking this up?
2. Since founders generally take up salaries only what is required for them to sustain. It would mean a financial cut for me too. So I'm stuck in the dilemma of moving towards an entrepreneurial route vs if it fails and I've to work again i may have to start off with a lower salary in the future.
I'm a risk taker (some call it seeker) when it comes to that. Looking forward for some helpful suggestions.question startups start-up startup hell suggestions are welcome suggestion startup suggestions founders founder technical co-founder co-founder3 -

How to bring your zsh start-up time from 7s to 0.2s on macOS:
1. Don't call "brew info", piped to grep, piped to awk
2. Don't dynamically detect the current version of brew-installed packages
3. Don't call java_home
4. Actually don't do anything dynamically. Just symlink shit as they get updated
There you go. Don't be like me. Use the "brew --prefix" command and put its output in your .zshrc, instead of running it every time -

My employer is a subcontractor on a big and rather complex project, that already is way behind schedule and over budget (as these monsters tend to be). To get back some confidence from the client our principal moved an important milestone up two weeks. Which we protested against vehemently because the projected workload was already a very tight fit for the original timeline, without any reserve to speak of left. They wouldn't listen though...
The result? The whole team has to work the next weekends to have even the slightest chance of making the earlier timeline. Which is exactly what we told them would happen when they moved the milestone.
The worst? This isn't the first time this has happened while I worked on the project 😑5 -

"Ultimate" success for a dev?
I don't know what that would be, so I'll be answering that around my experience.
Start really poor, so when you start making good money, you value and appreciate it.
Work for a company (Startup/MNC doesn't matter), and build your network with people/clients.
Work really hard in the beginning era and fail as much as possible.
Quit said company and build your own client-base, cutting the middle men out of the equation.
Work on your terms after that, remotely obviously.
Years down the line, come up with your own idea and start a company which makes enough money to retire with ease, not worrying about saving up for retirement. -

App idea: Platform for ongoing entrepreneurs
I just come from a start-up weekend. I really enjoyed the support we got from 17 different mentors (most of them founded in the past on their own).
Back home start-up funders don't have the access to that mentoring. My idea is to create a platform specialized for founders, where you can share your idea, believes and ask question all around your business.
I think especially in the early founding stages entrepreneurs are full of questions. Helping and discussing with other selfminded people is probably very enjoyable for us founder folks. A difference to the f.e. reddit concept: Users can create "diaries", a place where all storys, questions and posts about your project are stored. Reading a diary from beginning to end shall be a fun experience, reviewing your or others history of their "babys" and following the entrepreneurs thoughts through all stages of founding. Users of course can create multiple diaries.
Functionality will be suited for the listed usecase, for example a "Post as Anonymous" function will be added, if you have to deal with company sensitive data and more stuff like that.
What do you think about the idea? Do you like it? Would you use it? If not, tell me why?
Cheers -
