A client who I freelance for just asked if they could invest in one of my side projects.

This is the best day of my programming career 😊

Early in my career I was assigned the task of implementing a 3D pie chart into our application that you could spin and rotate with your mouse. You know, because sometimes you want to see the sides and the back of a pie chart.

"Don't be the smartest person in the room. If you are, you're in the wrong room."

This piece of advice really holds true and continues to push me into fulfilling and challenging positions in my career.

I'm gonna start off my DevRanting career by posting the most relatable comic I've seen...

My friend had the bright idea of making a version of bubble sort that plays a quacking sound effect on every swap. I added in different variations of the same sound effect for various conditions.

We named it "Quacksort," and one of the professors asked us to present it to the intro class.

My career has reached its peak.

I didn't start coding until my 30s. I enjoy learning spoken languages, and heard on a radio show that computer coding works the same parts of the brain. Tried it and became an addiction. Been building things ever since, and now making it a career.

I just want to share a small win in my career. finally, I got a 6-digit salary (relative to my country's currency)

the down side though, it's a .NET position

Early in my career, I worked at a large American telecom for a couple years. All their HP-UX servers had the root password set to "hpworld" which was the vendor default.

Communication.

I started coding at Engineering school (so like 4 yrs ago) and even if there were projects by group, I kinda learned it all the way by myself so I actually learned to code alone. And to resolve my issues alone.

And it costs me a job right after my internship. Was a big problem since I was almost alone (someone worked also on it but they was on multiple project at the same time so not 100% available).

That was one of my biggest fear in my career and one of my biggest challenge too in my personal development.

And so, like 8 months later, I got a job, I'm in a big team and no more problem of communication. That's something I'm very proud of. But I'm still young in my career.

I need today to be over yesterday. I'm exhausted and questioning my career choices. I need sleep to mask the pain 💀

Early in my career I saw a specific lead developer being a jerk. I saw it as confidence then. Looking back I realize they were scared and were trying to cover up the fact that they didn’t know what they were doing. Time really does give clarity sometimes.

Hit udemy, Google for any new technologies, attend large conferences, and simply spend 30 mins to an hour each day coding in anything new - and of interest.

I have to keep up with the young people, to keep my job/career alive, heh.

In my short career, I've seen projects become legacy before their first release. Hell, I've seen proof-of-concept apps turn into technical debt because to management as long as it works we won't rewrite it.

Worst career choice: Not following computer science because there were few careers for computer techs pre-2000s.
Best career choice: Do a 2 years course in CNC (paid by the government). Also, the worst carer choice because I got my burn out in the first (one of the best in the region) molding company I worked for.

I went to every career fair in college. Every semester I dressed up, redid my resume, and went like a champion desperate for work. Last fall I went, and only gave one resume. As I was leaving, I turned back after a question popped into my mind. Watched the recruiter put that resume in the trash. Worlds worst recruiter.

Spent 2 years of my career learning/working on a peice of technology/framework without proper guidance. Turns out whatever I learnt about it till now is useless

This might be a long post so bear with me. I work for a company and there was a project for a huge client. I'm junior in skill (been programming for about two years) but my job title doesn't reflect that. Anyways, I got the design about a month ago but I was on deadline for two other projects so I couldn't pick it up until last week Wed. Ironically, that's when the final design was delivered & told me it was due next week Wednesday. I built it as fast as I could. Finished mobile but for some reason, this last part for desktop just wasn't working out and it just so happens to be the most crucial part of the piece. (I was also sick the entire time and didn't sleep for the last two days nor did I eat). I was supposed to demo it yesterday but I still needed to make a few updates and the project coordinator took me off the project & gave it to a dev with more experience. This has never happened to me before. I'd go as far as to say this is my first big fuck up. I've always delivered on deadline and I'm taking this pretty hard. Has anyone been in similar situations? What do I do? Any advice?

I used to love programming and I really had a passion for it! I was a fast learner and realized quickly that I had a talent for this. My first day of my internship. I was confident in my abilities to develop, but wow. I was totally put in place after the first day. I realized that I didn't know as much as I thought. Almost wanted to change career paths. I'm thankful for that day because it really made me push on and become a better person and programmer!

Coding has given me a creative outlet. It's filled me with more frustration than anything else I've experienced. It's given me profound joy through successful projects. It's provided me a career which supports my family.

I am a self taught programmer. Currently in last semester in electronics engineering. I want to become a software developer but can't decide the right career path for me to take. I like back end, Android, Data structures and algorithm, Parallel programming, Machine learning and computer vision, and even security. I am afraid I will remain the jack off all trades and won't be the master of any. This way I won't be doing any good in my career. Any advice as what to do ?

The idea of going back to work in an office terrifies me. Like...it really scares me. I really hope things work out even better than I hope and I get to keep working from home while still projecting my career upwards.

Top challenge of my career?

Balance. Money, stress, learning. I've only ever had 1 or 2 at optimal levels.

Currently have OK salary, not much stress, but not learning much.

My problem with “The DevOps Handbook” is the same problem I have with Star Trek: The Next Generation: it gave me seriously unrealistic expectations that senior leaders can be convinced to abandon stupid ideas.

Or maybe it’s just that in my mid-to-late thirties my tolerance for manglement is as low as it’s ever been, and I’ve grown out of that idealistic kiss-ass stage of my career.

In Germany we call it a Mechatroniker. This was my career choice before I found out that I like writing web/desktop apps.

My career is perpetually doubting / questioning my skill set while making steady progress and receiving praise.

Whether its for personal projects or work (interning) I feel so delayed and unskilled, yet I know I've made a hell of a lot of progress and wouldn't even recognize the me I am now

Will not studying CS become a hinderance later in my career?

Because of my personal life my career life is failing.My Girlfriend getting married to a "null pointer" by next month and I can't concentrate on any of my stuff. I have started a startup recently I am scared of losing it.

I lost my faith in my dev career after 3 months of graduating college and into a full time job as a backend developer.
I learned nothing in college that was beneficial for me at work. and I felt like I was pushed into a sea with sharks and tsunami and without the ability to swim.

As someone who has just finished a foundation degree in computer science, I'm really wanting to get 'my foot in the door' with the IT industry to start building my career that I'm so passionate about, but I just don't know where to start. Any recommendations in what level of jobs I should apply for/where to begin?

[Long rant] for years I had been planning on becoming a rabbi, majored in religious studies etc, until I realized there would be no way out of my rapidly growing debt if I chose to continue on that path. i had to drop out 3 years into my undergrad due to financial issues, and as it is now working full time im barely holding my head above water. I spent a lot of time being sad about it until i decided to change things and started getting into accounting before I discovered coding. I am SO GLAD I discovered coding cause accounting was so boring...Now I'm excited to be going back to school for software development and I'm in a bit of a pink cloud having discovered something thats both exciting/fun/challenging AND lucrative... But i do worry about 5, 10 years in the future, will i still be as stoked about it? Religious leadership was and is something I know i would feel ~fulfilled~ over a lifetime, and while my newly discovered passion for coding literally keeps me up at night getting fired up on solving problems and writing my little newb programs, i think I'm afraid of burnout?

[Tl;dr] I'm making an education+career switch to software development and i wanna know how folks feel about their career years into it, do you still love it just as much? Feel jaded? Regretful? Happy?

Do you ever wish you chose a different career?

I’m a self taught dev & wanted to make something of what I learned. So I moved from a small town, landed my first tech job (!dev), but the closer I get to my goal the more worried I get.

I’m worried that making my hobby a career will eventually lead me to loathing the one thing I love. And I’m not really sure if I should stay the course or turn around in hopes to save the ship.

Software engineering was the only field, which was scientific in it's nature and got my interest in early teens.
I've always wanted to be a scientist and/ or do scientific research, however, this dream is still far away at this point in my career.

For the first time in my career, I have a specific job to aspire to, and a stack of books to read and certifications to garner to make it happen.

I think 2 years is a perfectly achievable timeline to make it happen.

Today is the fourth time in my career I needed a function that oscillates... to animate a 3D model slowly rotating left and right for my personal project.
Yay for the sine and cosine functions :D
...I never used them outside working with (mostly 3D) stuff that has to animate in a loop

6 months exactly into my development career. Finally starting to understand the product and feel like I’m finally getting the hang of stuff. Then a DB task comes up and I feel like I’m back at square one.

I updated my resume.
My new career objective is to score enough ++ so that I can afford a tiger pet on my devrant avatar!!

Any of us had annoyances with people with “a million dollar app idea” but what about these which gives unsolicited career advice?

I’m dealing with a boomer which keeps trying me to change my career and work into cyber security (because TV told him it’s a well paid field) despite me kindly telling him for multiple times which it’s not going to happen because I won’t throw away a career I love to work in a field which seems deadly boring to me (I love anything about coding from design to typing for hours on Vim meanwhile the only thought of reading for hours obscure documentation to find potential vulnerabilities on a system kills my spirit).

I keep seeing news story after news story talking about the progress we’re making in AI and how there are not enough developers to fill the jobs in demand for it. I tossed my alternate career choice of aerospace over two decades ago because there were no interesting career paths in what I was capable of doing (not much because I suck at math). And here I am 22 years deep into a Web Dev career that I feel is going to be completely obsolete well before my retirement age. I either need to do the impossible and get good at advanced math so I can even understand the very basics of AI or I need to win the lottery.

How to unfuck my career... Sigh.

Throughout my career I worked with quite some awesome engineers. However, only very few of them also do engineering as a hobby. (The shitty engineers obviously don't do it, otherwise they wouldn't be shitty.) Just thinking.

Taking the AWS certification is on my to-do list this year. I still have a few niggling doubts about the cert tho'.

So today in school I decided on my career choice. Playing around with GW-BASIC on an old 286 when I was maybe 8 I knew that I would spend my life programming. It was magic. It's less magic now, but I know I will not run out of challenges in my life or career, and that's pretty good too :)
