A few years ago when I was still an apple fan boy, friend of mine bragging me about how android is awesome, we were drinking some shots at our local pub and I was starting to get light headed. At one point he showed me so called "terminal emulator" app. I checked it out, and assumed it's an emulation, just like dosbox, so I decided to verify that "rm -rf *"... (the phone was rooted)

The phone shutdown within seconds, I couldn't stop laughing, while my friend was shock that his new phone was longer booting.

Luckily he managed to reflash the ROM. What can I learn from that experience?
1. Don't drink and sudo
2. Don't call your app an emulator if it's the real deal.

A few days ago I completed my one year work anniversary(is that how it's said) at my first job. And this rant is basically stuff I learnt and stuff I wish someone had told me when I was starting out. Here goes:-

When you are starting out your first job you would be a fresh out of college and people around you in college are your friends where as people around you at work are colleagues. Your friends can like you, but you have to earn the respect of colleagues.

If you sit yo ass too long u will become fat(started going to the gym again).

Don't bother your seniors too much. they have their own shit to deal with.

Don't bring your personal shit to office I don't want to hear how cute your dog looked while it took a dump on your carpet.

Avoid the person who gossips.
It's a two way street.

Whatever you find amazing your boss may not you know coz you are a geek and your boss isn't.

Don't talk to people when they are coding.Yeah just don't.

Avoid "below the belt" humor you may look funny but you loose respect in the long run.

Keep upgrading yourself don't stop learning.

Admit stuff you don't know don't Bullshit.

To sum it up it's a game of respect, respect of knowledge,respect of skill and most of all respect of attitude.

Laying down for 3 minutes in the dark, *heating up and feeling my pulse* hoping it will crawl out. Which obviously did not fucking happened, this sucker just squatted my ear.
So I go to the bathroom and start filling up the tub. While it is filling up, I Google "how to get cockroach out of your ear". Finding an article that you should pour oil in your ear to suffocate the squatter. So I go to the kitchen, grab my sunflower oil, go to the mirror and start pouring. I am starting to shine like a bodybuilder and hear the noises again. After what felt like an eternity, I hear even more scratching in my head, this is the moment I do half a headbang and *wush* *flap* something hit the ground. I look down in the hope it wasn't just the sunflower oil and see this little thing which is clearly a cockroach. I am fucking relieved, not hearing any noises anymore.

Dropped out to grow a business I co-founded. Respect to all those that finished. I was already working a six figure salary as a software engineer before I even started at a university. I decided to attend though to have a more complete resume. One day a professor explained that we could look forward to doing really "advanced concepts" like web services OUR SENIOR YEAR. That was already daily life for me. Our business was starting to grow quickly and it needed more and more of my time. I chose the business and for me, that was the correct choice.

We’re recruiting new team members, and so our recruiting staff wanted some input on what to look for. We told them that we need more frontend devs, mainly for JS frameworks like React and Aurelia.

Don't think a lot before diving into a tough project. Just jump in. If you second guess yourself about being ready, you'll never do it. Either you're already good enough or you'll figure out what you need.

I wasted way too much time before starting to write an AI chess engine but it turned out a lot simpler than I expected.

I am a student who is just starting out in cs and web design. I don't really like web design that much and don't see a future for myself but I run a small website for fun.

Whenever and I mean ｗｈｅｎｅｖｅｒ I show my roommate or friends a side project hosted on the site I get a 8 minute long speech about how an aspect of my design is flawed, how my color scheme is trash, and how I should do X thing instead. Whenever I argue and say that I like my design I'm met with "I'm the end user and the user is always right"

Came to work and there ware my boss and CEO waiting there next to my place.

"Hey, you remember that you mentioned yesterday that you had a break through and the thing is finally starting to do something? We have few journalist downstairs can we show them a demo in like five minutes?"

"Ok, give me five minutes and don't click here and there otherwise it blows up."

My boss came back from presentation after ten minutes that it doesn't work, after little investigation turns out to be hw issue, replaced hardware went to the conference room and it worked.

Crazy deadlines? No, just another day at work.

Dev related: To actually finish my projects instead of working on different ones, and end up finishing nothing.

I said I was going to create my own operating system. I started it, but barely. I haven't touched the compiler I was working on for months. Oh, and I'm working on an android app related to writing. I started it a while back, and never got to finish it.

My need to stop starting new projects, because if I keep doing this, I'll never finish anything.

Please don't. I teach web dev now, and when people learn a framework initially, they often get a warped and incomplete understanding of how things work. They spend their time learning the framework instead of learning the systems they're actually working with, and then when the want to do something the framework can't do, they're just at a loss.

Don't get me wrong, bootstrap and jquery and so on have their places, but those places aren't when you're just starting out.

beginner coder: figures out how to write a feature

average coder: knows a few different ways to write a feature. but not quite sure on which one to use.

master coder: meditates before starting a project. closes his eyes to map out the entire infrastructure of the project.

I'm from the UK. My CS teacher took a dislike to me in junior high school, dissuading me from taking the classes I needed to take computer science at college. I ended up starting an economics major and then dropping out.

With the support of my family and friends I started over as a self taught as a developer.

I'm now a Tech Director in New York and love my job.

I work in an unrelated field, and code in my spare time as I'm just starting out. Have to pay tbe bills somehow, amirite?

So my boss has installed cameras "for security", and uses them to monitor staff on a regular basis. A couple months ago he pulled me aside with a piece of paper. My "second written warning" (next step prior to dismissal) however I haven't received any other disciplinary action.

The warning contained 10 points, all of which made reference to observances over the damn cameras.

Please keep in mind -- I have been an overachieving empleyee for over 5 years, and friends with the bosses the whole time. My boss was in my wedding party.

Had a great day yesterday. Productive, happy, felt great, and was focused despite a lot of cute distractions. Finished a third of my feature.

Today I made like the dirtiest hack I ever made. I needed to convert people's birthdate into days (starting from 0), and then had to find out the oldest person. It didn't work, because the output was the youngest person... So instead fixing the mistakes in my code, I simply made the value be negative ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I really hate it when online sources aimed at educating people looking to get into programming attack specific languages. I'm ok with them recommending some good starting languages (ex. JavaScript, Python, etc.) but I find it extremely inappropriate and damaging when they list languages they consider "bad." Languages like JavaScript, PHP and Java constantly get called out even though they power a huge chunk of the web and services hundreds of millions of people use every day. IMO it's a huge disservice to tell beginners not to even look at these languages. We should be teaching the language isn't really what's important - it's what you build with it.

Recently I've been working on a side project and I've been working on it a lot over the last week, with lots of late nights.

My girlfriend said to me the other day, "do you not wanna give it a rest for a bit, you'll be starting your new job soon, you'll get fed up of it".

I then explained to her that, programming is on of those few careers where you'll continue to do programme and do side projects, even after a full day of it, and I couldn't imagine it any other way.

I can't wait to start work.. but then I also don't wanna lose out on project time 🙁

Almost three years ago when I was starting web development,a friend of mine asked me to create a website for him.

You know those single page portfolio with a blog. I said Ok.

After a week I hosted the website and the dude didn't pay up the remaining amount. After following up for a while I just commented out the links to load all css files and declined his calls till he paid up.

He called and said he suspected a hack, to which I replied yes. He had to pay up the remaining amount + more to prevent 'other future hacks'.

The website is no longer active (koome.co.ke) but since then my interactions with clients has changed.

My best experience was going from static HTML and non-preprocessed CSS to having my mind blown by Sass & learning JavaScript and what "API" even means (and starting on ruby and basics in command line). I actually feel like I'm a developer in some sense of the word.

That was a ton of growth in a year where I transitioned from a purely graphic design role to having an influence over development processes and rolled out a number of projects to production that I spearheaded.

Its all fun and games until your malfunctioning software costs people their lives - if you're just starting out as a dev or in the "ain't nobody got time for writing tests" camp, I highly recommend you to lookup and read about the Therac-25 incidents during the 80s.

Even if you're not working on a life-critical/mission-critical application, the realization of the impact that us devs can have on the society can push you to become a better developer producing quality software...

I'm starting to get sick of people calling out js for being what it is, a terrible pile of shit, without taking any effort learning the language. just because you wrote an app in java or python doesn't mean you're entitled to a free certificate in any language with a name that makes it sound easier.

in fact, I'd claim that for an experienced programmer, Java is much easier to pick up than JavaScript.

but, if all you want to do is sit here and complain, and you can find no joy in reading pages on end of documentation... well then, the only thing you're missing out on is the biggest fucking platform of the world. so don't worry I guess. it'll be fine. right? eventually the users will see that the web is just a nuisance for developers and they'll all start using native apps...

It's okay to make something nobody wants.

I wasted a lot of my life being too scared to make something out of fear. This community especially can be very toxic to people that are starting out, that aren't geniuses, that didnt make every perfect decision for their product.

I am so done with Azure for today!

After I ran out of space on a secondary drive I shut the VM down and increased said drive and now after starting it (which takes way too long already) I can't ssh into it: "Connection refused". Diagnostics say "everything is fine bruh" and now I'm stuck with an inaccessible VM which I already spent half the night on configuring and downloading 60gb of sources.. aaargh!

Just want to share that in August I'll be starting my career as a developer, something which I'm super nervous and excited about.

I just finished my bachelor degree, and will be starting mid-August. I've been moderately interested in the concept of programming since I was 14, but I initially didn't think I had what it took to make it my profession ("Programmers need to be good at math and that sort of stuff, right?") So I studied electronics and started at the same place where I finished my apprenticeship, working IT support. Eventually, I found myself not fully pleased with how things had turned out and quit my job to get a bachelor degree. And now, having graduated a few days ago, I'm very excited to see what my future as a developer will bring. I'm stoked and nervous at the same time, and I just wanted to share this with someone.

During my time as a student, I've been so lucky as to have discovered the world of JavaScript/Node.js/React in addition to all the standard Java-centric curriculum they taught at school, and I think that's an area I hope to explore more in the coming future.

Seriously, during the years I've been working deeply and for long time with many software products developed by Google, like the Android SDK or TensorFlow for instance, I can't find a single feature in them that isn't foundamentally wrong and badly designed starting form the basis, clearly due to an evident lack of the most basic programming knowledges... Am I missing something? Are they secretly making anyone out there think they are dumb on purpose for some occult reason? Or is it truly a dumbness matter? I don't understand.. :(

Bossman kept giving me a new “high priority” every month. Which would’ve been fine except for the fact that the prior month’s “high priority” was always a type that needed several months to come to full fruition. So he was constantly pulling the rug out from under me just as I was starting to gather steam and make progress. Also, he was begrudgingly paying me only half of the market salary for my job title in my locale. Would have loved to have paid me less and worked me twice as hard. I endured about 9 months of that and then I quit. Now my job is the exact opposite. Paid nearly twice as much with no micromanaging and plenty of time to work on my projects.

It seems like everybody here was born as a legendary coder or started in their teens. I'm 24 now and just starting out.

The ascii DEL character 0x7F or b1111111 historically had a special relationship with punch tape programming, if the programmer made a mistake punching out a character then they could simply punch out all the holes and the computer would skip that character, effectively deleting it, and saving the programmer from starting over.

I currently have Kali (for labs I'm working on to teach myself the things I didn't learn in school), Ubuntu (downloaded for school), and Fedora (downloaded for my database class)... other than Kali already having Metasploit in it, I don't see a difference between these and I know there are more versions of Linux.

What would be a good starting place for every day use, that'll support Citrix receiver (required for work no idea what its requirements are but I can find out, if i can't use it in Linux, I'll dual boot) and virtual box (or other virtual software, don't mind learning new systems), and that i can also have room to grow for security learning?

Ok this is freaking creepy. I searched for information about login systems on other websites for some time. Not once did I touch Facebook. Then Facebook show me targeted ads when I hoped on 30 minutes later. How the heck does Facebook get that data in the first place? So recently I started to observe a little upgrade in the Google's searching algorithm. The next suggestion in Google's search box is depending more on my immediate preceding search. It's so good that its starting to creep the hell out of me.

- was a manager of a super market
- got tired of walking to tills to give discount
- taught myself to code
- wrote a loyalty card system that automated the discount
- met an investor with a similar mindset and rolled it out nationally (after it was professionally refactored).

Let me tell you why I feel like a shit right now. I work as sw dev in a country worse than Germany and company I interviewed is located in Germany. So this is kinda big deal for me.

I interviewed with the company last year, interview went really well. They told me during interview that they would return in 2 weeks tops. It took 2 months for them tor return. For some reason, I was not hired for that position. Later I learned that the division i was gonna work defunded/separated. After learning that the guy I interviewed really tried hard to give me good news but failed-therefore had to delay bad news, I was not sad for not being able to be accepted for that position or delayed response.

Fast forward to this year, I interviewed with the same company for a position as subcontractor employee on another company. Interview took just before Coronavirus situation started to blow up(mid March), I had to return to my home country when the borders were closed asap, 2 day after interview. Fast forward to May I got the job offer and contract with a good salary, July as starting date. But I have no Visa and you apply for visa with a valid contract. German embassies work at minimum capacity, no new applications for any type of visa including work/residence visa. After my serious research I found a crack, emailed the embassy and they finally agreed to give me a special appointment on the start of July. The company I interviewed sent me new contract(August starting date) automatically.

On mid July, I told the company that visa might not come soon enough, I might not make it to August to start to job. We both agreed to replan starting date once i got the Visa.

On August 6, my visa came. I informed them asap, and they told me the other company will return in 3 weeks with new starting date. I was like WTF we were waiting for this visa for months, why do you need 3 weeks. Anyways, 3 weeks past and the other company still did not give any new starting date. I really feel like shit right now. Last week I asked to the "my" company if there is a problem with my employment(the other company might change plans after all) and they said only starting date is the problem, don't worry. On 3 occasions, they reassured me there was no problem(no, I was not asking them like paranoiac obsessive person, they were preemptively saying it in some cases). They say other company employees were really asking about when I was coming frequently.

What should one do in such situation. Do I even have legal rights? Maybe I will look back at this post and laugh at my paranoia, but I would you random internet citizens' ideas on this situation. They say lightning does not strike twice to same point but living same disappointment with the same company would really hurt. rant over, mamba out.

When I worked in a non-dev env, the best part was that I was done with work after working hours. I didn't stress out or even think about the issues. It was something for tomorrow or someone else to worry about. And so, I was not mentally exhausted and stressed out all the damn time.

So, I shall try to bring that mentality to my dev life too. With this new position I'm starting soon, I really want to do well for at least a few years. And that would need me to chill the fuck out. Particularly after work.

Looking for some advice....

So I'm a web dev that works remotely full time from home which I love, I'm expecting my first child in late march which is really exciting but I'm starting to think about how it's all going to work with the missus home for at least 12 months and of course a baby that (without sounding horrible) is going to be a big distraction to me when I'm trying to work.

So just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there in a similar position or that has gone through the same thing and how you did it? Is there any advice you can give me?

How I feel when im asked to add functionality to a project that was built like 10+ years ago and needs refactored in its entirety but the code base is so terrible that youre honestly better off just starting it from scratch but you are thrown into 5 other million things and there is no time to do it so you just shit out the bare minimum code that will not break the rest of the application.

What is your opinion on hopping from one language to another?

So far I have been programming for a little over a year and have used Python, Lua, Javascript amd C++, planning on trying Java in the very near future.
I've had quite a positive experience with switching languages so far, especially when starting out. Some concepts I wouldn't understand, but after seeing them from a perspective of a different language I finally got it. Do you think it's good to know a lot of languages, or in the long run is it better to master one?

I started learning Golang today and really like it.

The error handling is *excellent*. It always works the same way and is standardized, unlike the hell that NodeJS error handling is (.catch(), try).

Modules confused the fuck out of me. I eventually figured out how they worked, but Go really doesn't try to make it easy to have multiple source folders...

I'll probably be re-writing my Discord Bot in Golang soon. Being able to have just one binary output will make things infinitely easier. Compile-time variables are another feature that's nice and easy to implement.

The goal is only having to upload a single binary to deploy on production from my CI script that has all keys and stuff inside. Feels good to finally throw all that old bad JS code out and starting completely fresh.

Being 46 and finally having the chance to focus on software development after years of BA/PM roles, flogging the market trying to get a junior gig, then one day painting a shed with my 16 year old who I introduced to programming about 6 months ago and listen to him speak at length on protocol programming, finer variances between python and swift and his own development of a text based RPG system where he is creating randomized map generation, gear customization etc. only to realize as paint glides down my arm:

I like developing on windows. Like many people here I got into development at home starting as a hobby when I was in school so there were things I still did on my computer that Linux wasn't really appropriate for.

I've made the jump to Linux in the past but found that it was awkward and annoying when I needed to do something on my windows. And I hate doing Dev out of a VM. So I've just got used to using windows at home.

And honestly, I don't know what's happening to everyone who keeps getting broken Windows updates. I think I've had 2 in living memory.

It's in no way perfect but what is? I don't use Windows servers, just for when I'm at home.

Here's a short story about luck:

A few months ago my wife signed a new job contract requiring relocation. However before starting that new job she got another (and much better) offer (also relocating to the same place) which she took on. Recently that first company fired 700+ people, including the unlucky one that filled her position.

If she had not gotten that second offer, she'd be out of a job after just relocating.

So I just found out that another company is launching the same app/website idea as mine...*sigh*
This is not how I was planning on starting my week.

I suppose I need wait and see what they have and improve my app to be better.

The person I report to just seems to want a mindless drone who implements whatever he has chalked out.

I plan out a sound solution for a problem that we're working on, and run it by him cause he asked me to show it to him before starting out with the work.
He doesn't even bother to read or understand it, and instantly rejects the whole thing in favour of his new solution.

My biggest personal challenge as a dev is learning and retaining, as well as keeping current, any particular language. I swear I really did build a career as an HTML/JS/CSS programmer. I have a resume that shows I did. But for some reason, lately, every time I open an editor I feel like I'm starting over from 22 years ago. Everything I do nowadays is copy/paste from StackOverflow, hiring another dev to help out, or cribbing code from past projects. I'd love to be able to just open Sublime and start coding like a badass like I imagine other coders do, but I just can't even get started. WTF is wrong with me?

College is rapidly sending me into a never-ending spiral of depression. I have to take Calculus-based physics for Computer Science, and it's making me want to kill myself. I'm not going to get anything higher than a D in it, so I'm going to have to take it again no matter what. I'm worried I'm not going to get a D in it because if I don't get at least a D in it, I won't be able to take the second part of it in the spring, which will remove 5 credit hours from my schedule that I will then have to find something else to fill with.

Worried that the terrible Physics grade I'm going to get is going to drop my GPA below the requirement for my scholarship. Worried that I'm going to get kicked out of the honors program as well. Worried that I'm going to be here for three more years. (My scholarship runs out in Spring 2020.) Stressing out about my Physics final tomorrow that will determine whether I pass or fail the class.

Im starting to wonder if that Computer Science degree is worth it.

It's just becoming so inconsistent and fragmented, it's almost at windows level of inconsistent.

Now either google should start regulating the app store and android itself or completely ditch android as a complete stand alone OS.

I would personally seperate android into a runtime and focus on fuschia by building the android runtime into it, that way it could pull system UI element design and such rather than have the user build apps that look completely out of place and don't follow rules like dark mode, theming and the such...

I'm not going to jump ship into iOS because fuck iOS but just really hope google really starting tightening android up else I feel like it's just going to starting breaking more and more into a steaming mess.

The more I write Go the more I get to like the language, but today I felt like I hit a huge wall. I found out that the structure I initially planned for my Discord bot wouldn't work for what I actually wanted to achieve, which made me feel like a completely useless developer. I develop SaaS solutions in the form of REST API's for a living, so making a bot is completely new to me, which is why I probably shouldn't feel so useless. Any advice for getting back on the horse again? I really want to see this hobby project finished. But starting over after almost 20 hours of work feels so demotivating 😕

After being an active developer in the industry for about 5 years, I still have some bad dev habits on which I'm working on:
- Starting off with the code first without a proper design in mind/paper. (Trust me, I'll always regret of not having a proper design later)

- Writing long method bodies and not refactoring them later. (Because sometimes I turn out to be a lazy ass)

- Duplicating code in some places without reusing some.

Last night my Kindle got frozen and failed to respond to the touches, so I hard reseted it by physical power button. After a dozen of minutes of unresponsiveness, it finally restarted. Some light of hope sparked in me when I could see the silhouette of the lovely boy sitting under a tree, and soon enough the starting progress bar appeared and just stopped right before its end. I kept restarting the device over and over again and the starting progress bar has never reached its dest. The mtfk boy sitting under the tree grew up and becomes a douchebag, and still I can't do a thing with my Kindle. I had nothing to do with it now, and in a moment of having nothing to do, I put it out of its case, and even made a big scratch in the top left corner. Just want to smash it right away!

Starting dev job with .NET (various stack levels I think) in a couple months, beginning with a paid intro course. Any tips for stuff I should look out for, awesome training tools etc? Background: java, some js, some Python.

An 8 month nightmare project that failed more than it did anything else. With a team of 14 starting out and a 2 month deadline. Project ends Friday the 13th with only myself and another of the original team still left. It's crazy how issues out of our control caused skilled engineers to lose their cool and position and those that saw it through jumped up even though it all failed. Even if the project is horrible sometimes it pays to see it through to the bitter end.

I'm actually starting to see my skills advance.. I'm able to be given a basic topic and do it as long as I have the formula or whatever is needed in my head or planned out

Being a senior developer doesn't grant the privilege to join a team and starting a drama out loud that everything is bad and you don't like it.

First, if everything is perfect there is no need to hire you.
Second, think about the value that you can bring to the team instead of making them feel bad, how can you prepare an improvement plan and start to learn the factors and reasons behind those decisions.

What's funny, it that the same guy after a couple of months starts introducing bad fixes and he says it's ok for the moment, it's not good but it's okayish, I wish I had a time machine for those developers!

Not sure if this is progress or what... But the people who asked me to fix their laptops or build their website now want me to help them out in starting their very own crypto currency.

Well, I've been reading 'rants' in this community, and I'm amazed at how people discuss various softwares, languages, and sometimes even hardware!
I'd say I'm a noob. Can't even compare my 'coding knowledge' with what people know in this community, and I don't want to. I like that I'm now a part of this community. But I feel intimidated at times by the amount of things there are to learn! And I don't know how to start. I mean, we had a course on C for a semester, and I tried to build up on that myself. Other than that, I've been trying to learn web-dev, made a browser based game and tried to learn some back end. But I don't know exactly how to build up my proficiency with code, and solving problems, from here on out. So I would really appreciate if this golden community could help me out.(Not trying to flatter anyone. I don't express much, but all this is what I genuinely feel, and am grateful about.) I want to know how to go on about learning knew things in the realm of programming, and how I can apply it to solve actual problems. What language should I learn first? What will be valuable in this rapid-paced time? And some courses to help out?

I think I’m starting to realize that the source of my procrastination is because I’m too easily distracted in my room. I had to bring my laptop and book out to the living room and I feel like a lot more fucking focused but that might also be the fact I’m not playing music so it could be either? I know location change occasionally is important but I don’t have many places to go to sadly :/

I started out on a Sinclair ZX 80. It has just 512 bytes of ram and you had to use a function button together with a key for each command since it did not have enough memory to keep the source in memory ;)

I attended few basic courses and then went on to hold them.

After a year there was suggestions of starting pascal courses so during the summer I read up in turbo pascal 5.5 but since the summer home did not have electricity I had to do it all theoretically for the first month before getting to try it out.

I got to try visual basic when doing school practice with Microsoft but the name was not set by then as it was a few months before the release.

Thats also where the more professional programming got going even though I did one pascal program that was used professionally before that.

Game development is a nightmare when your first starting out because you tend to neglect on keeping a small book on event notes.

Such as which event triggers what, and what events to turn off when the player starts the game.

You tend to get events that either don't start when player is far into game because you forgot to turn the event trigger on for something much for earlier in the game.

Honestly idk but that one chapter from mythical man month, "Plan to Throw One Away", stuck with me:

"Where a new system concept or new technology is used, one has to build a system to throw away, for even the best planning is not so omniscient as to get it right the first time."

In my current project I've seen this play out, initial development was very prototype-ish and just not well designed but when we got a somewhat decent state we had to continue with it instead of starting again and doing it properly. And now the consequences of that are hitting, progress for new features is incredibly slow, the software is very error prone, a bunch of dead code all around, ...

I think I'm getting to the point to where I'm burnt out at my job. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to work. But it is very, VERY boring. And I'm starting to struggle to even pay attention anymore. I know it's important but I'm struggling to care. How am I supposed to do good work when I can barely even focus? Good code is not magic! I can't be barely holding my eyes open and expected to be worth anything.

I don't think I've been more excited about anything than my very first application.

This was when I was just starting out with programming. I had chosen C++ as my first programming language.

A friend and I'd written a simple application to fetch XML data from a sports data server, parse it and display our favourite football (soccer, for Americans) team's fixtures and results on a GUI.
We called it Sportify.

I've spent the last 10 days on an assignment for an interview. Instead of starting with the requirements right away I decided to fiddle around and tried to add typescript but got stuck for 3 days. Now I just need to write the docs and final PR description but I'm feeling really burn out. I'll be rejected if the code is shitty, and that thought made me try harder. But when I tried harder, in the back of my head I thought "What if I'm still rejected after trying so hard?" and that kills my motivation. I'll just get it done tomorrow. Next week I have another assignment, I'm using chatgpt for that one.

(!rant) When starting out as a web developer, I did my first project for a external vendor for which I was paid in form of a lunch and some hope of more projects.
For the second project, I was paid one month of agreed upon amount for two months of work.

Therapy is hardest when you're starting it IMO. I don't like talking about my vulnerabilities with people face to face very much, I get pretty defensive about it. We've agree that I'm suffering from a high level of anxiety which is likely leading to depression and we'll be working on solutions in the coming weeks.

Over the weekend I stopped programming and dedicated myself to more leisure. Went out for a hike (literally) and got a PS4, my first new gaming machine in over two years. Been playing Horizon Zero Dawn.

I'm starting to feel that I have so much more to offer than just write code, solve minor problems by moving miniature blocks here and there.

As for now I've moved to Performance Engineers. Will see how that turns out. But I have a feeling I won't feel like staying there for long either.

First post...starting a new job today, and I will be working as a JavaScript developer (Node, angular). I only worked with Java before this job and my only JS experience is with little side projects. I am super excited to get start working with new technologies. Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Buys macbook starting uni because it should last six years. Breaks in 3 years, new mobo, new mobo again, new macbook, new screen and finally I'm out of warranty now and the screen breaks again (retina macbook lose some kind of coating because the screen touches the keys). Made it five years without paying any extra but I have an HP laptop costing less than half that has done seven years with no issues.

what do you wish you could tell your past self who was starting out as a frontend developer?

I started a company a while back that builds really simple wordpress sites and design for small businesses. I took a client on that needed things that were well above my skill level as a "programmer" and it's been equally frustrating and satisfying to consistently have the shit kicked out of me while spending hours trying to solve problem after problem. I've never worked for a company as a coder and one of the things I'm starting to wonder about is whether or not I'm "cut out" to be a programmer. I like doing it, but from a business owner perspective I don't know that I would actually want myself as an employee. My question is: does everyone feel like a ducking retard everyday they go at it with their job as a programmer?

So a friend of mine was getting a BSOD, when he was starting Ghost Recon Breakpoint and PUBG,

turns out, the Stuff from his racing rig was being detected as cheating by their anti cheat software, and just crashing the system.

I like being diverse in what I can program. I like software development, web development, networking programming, I’m starting to get into embedding programming and using lower level languages like C/C++ (I’ve used them before but not for anything practical) and I enjoy the diversity. It makes me feel good knowing I can extend my programming knowledge.

Also I like having project ideas lined up so I know what I want to do next. And if I don’t finish one I know is easy but I can’t figure out, I CANT MOVE ON! I have to finish it. It’ll drive me fucking nuts.

Shady business practices. You see a lot of stories of people getting fucked over on here. Companies giving applicants a "coding test" to get work done for free, or guys promising to pay when the work is done(and then bailing), deserve to be thrown screaming from helicopters.

Some quick advice for people starting out:

1. If it's important, get it in writing. Promises are worth precisely dick, unless it's legally binding.

2. Exercise caution in interviews. The shadier companies know a lot of applicants are desperate, and they take advantage of that fact if they're allowed to.

Worst experience with a manager was with this project manager at my first job.

One day the other developers and I were staying back a little late to try to make some progress. The manager offered to go out to get food for us. It must have been two hours later when we realized he was not back. We were ready to go home and starting to get hungry. We called him and he said he got caught up but was on his way back and would be there soon. It was more than an hour later when he arrived with the food. I quit that job shortly after.

Been using Linux for about a year, now starting to customise it. Since it's full of Gnome garbage, I'll test out everything and then do a fresh install. Deadline is September 3rd, if it does not work fast and reliably till then I'll have to get Gnome because I need it for school.

OMFG... im in an AP computer science class and we are starting our first big project (this is a java class) and my teacher put us in a group of 3 and we had to figure out a project to do for the next 3 months. So like the teenagers they are they want to make a game... IN JAVA. like wtf java is not made for games. but since im only 1/3 of the group i have to go with the majority. So now I have to figure out how to do graphics in java. I am thinking of using LWJGL for 2d graphics. If anyone knows any other libraries for 2d graphics please let me know. (i don't want to use swing)

I have heard about Apache Hadoop for a while but never bothered to learn anything about it.
What can it be used for? Can I use it for hosting thousands of websites powered by php/hhvm?
I am starting to have a need for a really HA and High Performance solution that is futureproof too. My current solution is doing great also when it comes to performance and HA, but it is always nice to try out new things...

I needed to do some brainstorming for a starting point to connect Monday.com to some middleware so I can send assets in Monday.com to another server for providing status reports to non-Monday.com users. So, I fired up Anthropic Claude 3.7 Sonnet and asked it to give me some ideas of where to begin. It seems to have done really well stubbing out some starter code and a basic architecture for this system. Except for one thing. The system architecture diagram. Anyone know this language?

So after a couple years working at this company, the faculty I graduated from introduced a postgrad (masters) course in data science. I was always interested in the field, so I said fuck it and jumped the bandwagon...

I'm starting this week, I'm kinda worried my knowledge of maths and statistics got a bit rusty since graduation. Also most students there will be 4 years younger than me, and I'll keep doing my full-time job at the same time. But hey, at least I'll break the routine, and I can always quit my job if it turns out I can't do both, so whatever.

I am starting to learn C++ and I am trying it out on exercism. I am really at the beggining but when I make it work after so much frustration(based on devrant posts I guess that's part of the job) I always see people having shorter/better/more effective codes which makes sense to me but I wouldn't thought of it that way.

Is there way to make such thinking better or does it simply come with practice ?

Starting a new job tomorrow as a junior Java developer. Let's hope this works out better than my last job which was supposedly also as a java dev but involved zero code writing

I just came out... as a senior developer. Got a promotion and that's great. But I have been a generalist software engineer so far. I do frontend, backend (which is what I'm best at), some devops, management etc etc. But as a senior dev, I'm starting to feel that I have to specialize in something. I'm the guy who can do anything, but when discussing about tech stuff the other senior devs looks more "smart" (it's only one of the small things that frustrate me). I like being generalist, but I'm starting to feel the necessity of specialzing and be a reference in some technology, contributing more to company frameworks, open source, etc.

Starting to wonder if I don't enjoy coding or if the corporate environment is just draining the life out of me with it's constant monotony and monotone culture. I can't bring myself to be excited about this stuff, it's so boring. It pays the bills but it doesn't keep my eyes open.

Been thinking about this a lot and I'd love your thoughts. Recently a friend was starting in dev. They asked me for some advice. I just said "be humble and hungry". I've built my career on that phrase. Be willing to listen and willing to put in the work.

I suck at DevOps at least as hard as I'm good at front-end/UX. I found out as a result of the local job market starting to get needy for 'full-stack'. Stuck for 2 days on setting up a Docker/ Dockerhub/ DigitalOcean/ Bitbucket pipeline with Nginx/ Node/ MongoDB Cloud & Webpack/ React.

Weird metro experience just now. Its a usual, busy friday morning, and i realized my metro card balance is down to 0. So went to the card counter, only to find a long long line. Fortunately, a person i know was between the starting 4 , therefore i got into the starting of the line.

When i my turn came, this hot slim lady(/aunty?) Of 25-26(or 30-35, god that makup!) Just barges from nowhere, pushes me aside in a triangular corner and places her card there. Of course my card was already with the guy at the counter, so i didn't care, my card will be recharged first.

The problem started when he gave my card back. The hot lady just covered the whole path, and i was struck between the two walls and her ... Er...ass(not literally, but her back was just touching the third wall. I loudly said "Excuse me", and she said "of course", but the lady had er, bigger assets than she expected . So i tried to get out, but yeah there was some unintended pressing, not my fault!

People need to either know their ass sizes or don't have to push others in tight corners. I hope she didn't felt junior Lannister :p

So I decided to pick up go, I must say I am very impressed.

As a Java developer I have always felt a certain chaos in C development (no established infrastucture of project conventions) but I am starting to fall in love with Go.

Is there anyone out here who has professional (or advanced) experience with the language? I would love to learn more in-deth stuff like proper conventions and patterns.

I am currently in the works of designing, building and extending an CRM/MRP system for production lines.

But for some reason I cant seem to find ANY modern sources, papers, books, forums, threads for context on this topic. It’s as if this topic doesn’t exist.

(One thing to point out is that there are sources for business wise analytics but am looking design wise)

I am starting to think that i am not googling it correctly (what a boomer).

I recently took on a protege who is a complete newbie to the world of CS. I recommend that everyone should try to lend a hand to someone who is just starting out - it helps you communicate complicated concepts more effectively, understand how less technically inclined people approach programs and it's also great practise for your personal skills.

One year since I started programming I feel like I haven't made enough progress. If I have an idea, I don't know how to get started with it.

When I finally figure out a good starting point, I get stuck in Tutorial Land and I feel like I should be able to do things myself with just the documentation instead of doing beginners tutorials y'know?
