Me: *programming*
Team: *furiously discussing something outside of my expertise*
Me: *programming*
Team: *finally acknowledging my existance* "Yeah, dude. We are going to delete te project and start over because we can't fix this issue [which we have never ever discussed with you]."
Me: "What, that's stupid."
Team: "Well, do you have any bright ideas to fix it?"
Me: "Gimme until tomorrow."
Me: *programming*
Team: *doing absolutly nothing*
Me: "I fixed it!"
Team: "Why didn't you do that a week ago?"
Me: "You didn't ask..."
And so goes te story of how i was almost killed by an angry mob.14 -
One company i applied for never wanted to give me the job because they where building a prototype and they wanted someone familiar with their stack to get things up in a short time span.
*Fast forward 7 months*
The company i work currently with has been developing prototypes for startups to help validate their ideas and guess what, the bunch above came to our company unknowing that i work here and i have been put on the project as a lead.
Lol man, you cant write this stuff9 -
0. Plan before you code. Document everything. You won't remember either your idea or those clever implementations next week (or next month, or next year...).
1. Don't hack your way through, unless that's what you intend to do. Name your variables, functions etc. neatly: autocomplete exists!
Protip: Sometimes you want to check a quick language feature or a piece of code from one of your modules. Resist the urge to quickly hack in the test into your actual project. Maintain a separate file where you can quickly type in and check what you're looking for without hacking on your project (For example, in Python, you can open a new terminal or IDLE window for those quick tests).
2. Keep a quiet environment where you can focus. Recommend listening to something while coding (my latest fad is on asoftmurmur.com). Don't let anything distract you and throw your contextual awareness out of whack.
3. Rubber ducks work. Really. Talking out a complex piece of logic, or that regex or SQL query aids your mind greatly in grasping the concept and clearing the idea. Bounce off code and ideas with a friend or colleague to catch errors and oversights faster. Read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
4. Since everyone else is saying this (and because it merits saying), USE VERSION CONTROL. Singular most important thing to software development aside from planning and documenting.
5. Remember to flout all of the above once in a while and just make a mess of a project where you have fun throwing everything around all over the place. You'll make mistakes that you never thought were possible by someone of your caliber :) That's how you learn.
Have fun, keep learning!3 -
Brain, stop. Please just stop coming up with new ideas for one fucking second.
I wish I could implement them all but I have never finished a side project ever.
Please. Just. Fucking. Give. Me. A. Fucking. Rest. Right. Now. And. Stop, Coming. Up. With. New. Project. Ideas.
😫😡25 -
Client: Saw you did some cool logos...can you design us a logo as well?
Me: sure, do you have any ideas already?
Client: no
Me: Whats the name of the company/project?
Client: We don't know yet.
Me: FUCK YOU!!!18 -
Me: So i've cloned the iOS project, i've run carthage, but it won't build.. Have I done something wrong?
Devs: Oh read this doc on github, we do loads of custom stuff. The depenedncy manager can't do it all by itself. You need to run `./scripts/boostrap.sh`
Me (another day): I've switched branches and i'm getting all these errors. Any ideas?
Devs: Ah this happens when someone modifies xyz. Read this pinned slack message. Run `./scripts/bootstrap.sh` again.
Me (another day): I've switched branches again, getting different errors, re-running boostrap didn't fix it.
Devs: Ah yeah, this happens when someone modifies abc. You need to run `./scripts/nuke.sh` and then boostrap when this happens.
Me (another day): Guys When I try to run the prod app its not building any ideas?
Devs: Ah yes have a look at this confluence link. You need to run `./scripts/setup_debug_release.sh`, then nuke, then boostrap and you'll be good.
Me: .... ok
Devs: Oh btw very important! do not commit any changes from `./scripts/setup_debug_release.sh`. It will break everything!
Me: ... no i'm sorry we have a much bigger problem than that. We need to talk ... like right now7 -
After work I wanted to come home and work on a project. I have a few ideas for a few things I want to do, so I started a Trello board with the ideas to start mapping things out. But there were guys redoing the kitchen tile and it was noisy as fuck. So I packed up and headed to the library.
So I get all set up, and start plugging away. Currently working on a database design for a project that is a form for some user data collection for my dad, for an internal company thing. I am not contracted for this - I just know the details so I am using it as a learning exercise. Anyway...
I'm fucking about in a VM in MySQL and I feel someone behind me. So I turn and it's this girl looking over my shoulder. She asks what I am doing, and it turned into a 2 hour conversation. She is only a few years older than me (21) but she was brilliant. She (unintentionally) made me feel SO stupid with her scope of knowledge and giant brain. I learned quite a bit from talking to her and she offered to help me further, if I liked.
And she was really cute. We exchanged phone numbers...16 -
Before you start to code write your ideas on a piece of paper ... Everytime I beginn a project I start with coding, this advice is to difficult for me 😂5

UPDATE: devRant Trans-Oceanic Journey Community Project
It was a mere 12 days ago that I asked the question; 'Could devRanters, as a community, build a 21st Century Technology-Laden ‘devRant devie-Stressball-in-a-Bottle’ and send it on a journey across the Atlantic ocean?
I am thrilled to report that devRanters enthusiastically accepted this difficult challenge. A core team quickly formed and a tremendous amount of research and progress has been made in a short period of time. I want to give you a high level-flavor of what we are doing. Please keep in mind we still need your help. We welcome all develops to take part in this journey.
I want to give appreciation to the devRant Founders @dfox and @trogus. Without your support and sponsorship this project would not have been possible. devRant brought us together and it a reality. Devie journeying across the Ocean the Columbus sailed will stir the imagination of children and adults worldwide when we launch on May 1, 2017.
Some of the research and action items in progress:
- Slack and trello environments were created to capture research and foster discussion.
- A Stony Brook University Oceanography Professor suggested the Gulf Stream would be a good pathway across the ocean. We researched it very and agree. The Gulf Stream has been a trans-Atlantic conduit for hundreds of years. We are deciding whether to launch from Cape Hatteras, NC or the Virginia coast. Both have easy access to the rapid currents in the Gulf Stream.
- We are researching every detail of the Gulf Stream to make the journey easier and faster for devie. We have maps and a team member gathered valuable ideas reading a thorough book – ‘The Gulf Stream’.
- We decided on using a highly resilient plastic rather than glass for the bottle material. Plastic is much lighter, faster and glass breaks down more easily. The lightweight enclosure will allow us to take full advantage of waves and ample trade winds. We are still discussing the final design as we want to minimize friction and mimic the non-locomotion fish that migrate thousands of miles riding the Gulf Stream.
-The enclosure might be 3D printed unless we can locate a commercial solution. We have 3D specs and are speaking with some experts. There are advantages and dis-advantages to each solution.
- We will be using Iridiums' RockBLOCK two-way satellite technology to bounce lat-long coordinate pings off their 36 low-orbit satellites. The data will be analyzed by our devRant devie analysis software. IOS and Android public apps being built by the team will display devie's location throughout the journey in.
- Arduino will be used as the brains
- Multiple sensors including temperature and depth are being considered
-A project plan will be published to the team Friday 12/9. Sorry I am a few days late but adding some new ideas.
There are still a lot of challenges we must overcome and we will.
That’s all for now. I will send updates and all ideas / comments are valued.6 -
!dev
After almost a year of watching and experimenting (and not wanting to believe), I’ve learned something about the people i work with:
They don’t consider ideas based on the idea’s own merit, nor does a good idea improve their views of the person proposing it. They instead give the idea merit based entirely on who proposed it. It’s backwards.
• If they like or revere someone, their ideas cannot be bad, and they are never questioned even if they don’t make sense.
• If they sort of like someone, but that person challenges someone they like more, the ideas are dismissed and picked apart, and sometimes even reworded by the group and then accepted, with credit then given to the group. The person is still seen as wrong.
• If they dislike someone, none of their ideas are good, or they’re ignored, or ridiculed for reasons such as stating what is (only now) an abundantly obvious good idea.
(There is some overlap from the execs, where they occasionally consider an idea for its merit and then restate it, which means the idea is now coming from an exec, and is therefore readily accepted. Occasionally the original person gets some credit for this.)
It also applies to pictures of food in the cooking channel. If people like you more, they like your food more, while a professional-looking plate from a social leper gets ignored.
It’s like office politics, but applies to virtually every aspect of company life instead of just promotions, requests, and project assignments. It’s like replacing common courtesy and reason with a social FICO score: your contributions are only acceptable if you agree with your coworkers, laugh at their jokes, etc. And if you appear to like the same music, have recently posted more pictures of tacos or brownies than usual, etc.? Well, you had better do that before suggesting something you actually care about.
It’s social credit.
And it’s stupid.52 -
I had a manager who was a complete incompetent idiot (other than a fucking backstabber). He left the company ~3 weeks ago, yet I believe it would take 5 years to get rid of his legacy.
Today I discovered that one of his "genius ideas" led to the loss of months of data. This is already bad, but it's even more upsetting given that the records that have been lost are exactly the ones I needed to prove the validity of my project.
That fucking man keeps fucking with me even when he's not here, YOU DAMN ASSHOLE!!6 -
I am a tester by profession, But I love coding. Sadly my organisation doesn't allow people of my profile to install IDE/ Programming softwares... So I had to work with what I had... VBA, MS Office...
I started to work on few small Ideas, then I and a friend worked on a macro which automates a 5 year old manual process... It became a Hit ! It changed the whole process... My manager started to highlight it everywhere... Other manager started to come to us for helps....
So I learnt MS Excel Vba, then MS Access vba... started to become an expert...
Now the whole onshore and offshore management knows us by name....
This excitement made me explore other programming language band fell in love with Python and JavaScript...
Now I made a virtual bot for my manager....
That small project paved the whole way of my programming passion...5 -
The company I recently started working for are young guys my age, who want me to create awesome stuff, however I feel is best, and they let me think and try stuff, like new cool design ideas and use latest API's to create the most modern site possible. "Whatever you think is the best way to do it"
And I'm paid a decent salary. This is the first job I liked. Ever. I literally wake up early to get going, and work overtime (without them knowing nor paying extra) because I think this project is so amazing and I feel like giving back.. I usually hate PMs, but these guys rock.4 -
Execs: We're putting you on this project. It's priority and needs done by the end of the year.
Me: Sweet! I'll start right away.
*One week later...*
Execs: We came up with 2 new project ideas, and 5 ways you should implement it which don't make tech sense. These are priority too, get them done in a month, but also do that other thing.
Me: ...
And of course the smaller projects have prerequisites of parts of the larger project.3 -
Me searching for some random ideas.
Case 1
Me - I want to create something.
Friend - Can you hack into ... ?
Me - No, bye
Case 2
Me - I want to create something.
Bro - I also want to create one awesome project
Me - Ok, cool
Case 3
Me - I want to create something
Mom - Come, help me with preparation for dinner.
Me - *I have been trapped* Nice move3 -
Everyone has those ideas they thought of and were like, 'that would be rad!' but couldn't execute because of an array of reasons.
Well, two weeks ago I got approached by some people who had *thatmyidea* and were willing to pay me and any devs of my choice, to build it.
We've finished getting requirements and now I'm getting paid to work with devs I love, on a project I love!2 -
I call my git repos the field hospital.
I didn't finish my studies, but I seem to be the most qualified person to pick up the scalpel. Big corner of body bags. New brilliant ideas arrive, I do what I can with the time I have. Sometimes something survives, but it's usually too heavily mutilated to fully function. Unfinished refactorings develop into hardened scar tissue, the feature creep starts festering and leaking.
I should get better at triaging, just deleting old crap, pick one project and nurse it back to health.
But it's not easy to start with fresh focus, when your keyboard is still soaked in booze and the blood and tears of all the victims you've butchered.3 -
Fuck post-it notes.
Oh look, another product manager found his inner child and plastered a wall with a colored arts and crafts project.
Don't misunderstand me, I'm abso-fucking-lutely in favor of connecting with your deep childish nature -- but then at least enter the meeting room like a boss, armed with some creative ideas, really get to work with some fingerpaint, modelling clay, glitter, molly, acid blotters and grape juice for the whole party.
Not only was that project poorly thought out. Not only does the assortment of colored squares contribute nothing to the clarification of ideas. The issue is also that by Monday morning, the meeting room will look like a strip club after an escalated party, floor littered with 60 little neon pink and green slips reeking of desperation, cheap glue and failure.
Now your whole project is on the floor.
OH DIGITAL WHITEBOARD YOU SAY. NOW WE HAVE 10 MANAGERS FIGHTING DIGITALLY OVER VIRTUAL POST-ITS, ON A CLOUD SERVICE COSTING $500/MONTH.
Product managers, just go fuck yourself, I don't care about your kindergarten bullshit processes.
Call me when you manage to pull a workable idea out of your ass, and just draw an SVG diagram with Inkscape, or write your brainfarts into a nicely organized Markdown file.1 -
A few months ago I was working on a (totally underpaid project) where my friend and I had to basically rewrite the entire program our client was using.
So we started planning and wrote all sorts of documentation to show the client our ideas for the new flow of the program, the new structure of the GUI and a few more details of what would the inner workings of the new app. He seemed to like all those ideas and gave us the green light to go through with the project and start coding.
We spent a couple of months coding, redoing the front end from scratch (with a different framework even, so I couldn't reuse any code from the old version) and completely redesigning the back end so it would be better, faster, more scalable etc etc etc. During this process, we obviously showed the progress of the app to our client, explaining everything we had been doing, and he seemed to like every new version we showed him.
When we were in one of the last stages in development (basically sending versions of the app to the client for evaluation), the guy suddenly changed his mind. After agreeing on everything we had been showing him over the last months, he sent an email saying:
"...the new system makes the app too complicated. I want this program to be as simple to use as possible; so we should revert the "Policy" system to essentially what it was in the last major version. The only change I want to make is [...] and everything else is essentially the same as the last Policy system."
So basically he wanted us to FUCKING UNDO EVERYTHING WE HAD DONE AND REVERT THE FUCKING PROGRAM TO THE FUCKING VERSION HE HAD BEFORE HIRING US!!!! WHAT THE FUCK????
YOU WANTED US TO CHANGE YOUR APP AND THEN YOU SUDDENLY CHANGE YOUR MIND AFTER 3 FUCKING MONTHS WHEN THE PROCESS IS DONE???
GO FIND A SWORDFISH TO FUCK YOU IN THE ASS, IM NOT WORKING FOR YOU ANYMORE
God, it feels good to let that out.4 -
how about starting an open-source project where the contributors are the devRant community.
any ideas?44 -
Don't you just love it when you're pitching new project ideas and there's always that one negative person that has to find something to complain about?
They literally said to me "But what if the user runs out of battery? that will make the application useless for them"
At this point it just feels like this person is turning down every idea for the sake of turning them down.11 -
Bad dev practices:
1. Forgetting to version control some fun project i am doing for a long time and then commit everything at once. And forget about it again..
2. I probably have too much love for abstraction. So i abstract stuff just for the fuck of it to the point my friends dont even understand what the program is for.
3. I have no patience and due to that i lose motivation when i think of some idea that is big.
4. I cant keep my ideas small enough, and i dream too big until problem3 kicks in, and then i drop the entire idea.6 -
That moment when you get a great idea for a side project, and you know you don't have the needed skills yet, but you don't care 'cause it just means you're gonna have to learn more... just awesome 😍3
-
Motherfucker, every fucking meeting on this project we have a fucking 3 week deadline to accomplish the fucking impossible.
And now they practically want me to rewrite the whole fucking application.
And my fucking boss can't fucking shut the fuck up and keep having "ideas" on new thing.
YEU FUKCING STUPID PIECES OF SHIT!!! HOW CAN WE ADD SHIT WHEN EVERYTHING IS HALF ASSED BECAUSE WE DONT STOP ADDING SHIT? FUCK YOU!7 -
What the fuck is wrong with the designers? We have had meetings with the client, a proposal drawn up, a project spec written, budget agreed, witeframes drawn up exactly to spec. Designer involved in all stages for input and ideas. Now the designers have the wireframes, they are supposed to create based on these. No they make up what goes on the pages that bare no resemblance to the wireframes in terms of requirements. I am fucking fuming. I have sent the designs back with a note. Please provide designs based on the wireframes.17

Backstory: Offering manager brings a project through a few months of requirements gathering / feasibility study etc. Project spends 8 months with a R&D team to flesh out. Our team gets 6 months to turn it into a ship able product. 4 months in, offering manager calls a meeting.
OM: ok so you are all working on project X, well I need your input on something
Team: Ok, go ahead
OM: what do you think the app needs to do?
Team: ... I'm sorry?
OM: well we've been looking at it, and we don't think it does very much compared to existing apps. We need a killer feature but we don't know what. Any ideas?
Team: well we were looking at project Y originally, which was a lot more advanced. But you pulled the plug in favour of this.
OM: yeah, believe me customers will want project X a lot more. It just needs to do something interesting ... you know what I mean?
Team: not really, if it doesn't have anything, why did we go for it?
OM: ok I don't think I'm being clear. Point is, if anyone has any ideas let me know, we need to ship it in 2 months and it needs to be killer
I handed in my notice that week and was asked why ... let's just say I told them. -
Hey guys, I'm looking for small and cheap vibrators. One that you can use in an IOT project, the size of the ones in smart phones.
My searches on goggle are getting !work friendly results. Any ideas of a shop I can order some? Small miniature motors too.14 -
3 Days Group Project.
1. day (get into matter, collect ideas)
2. day (mate was sick and stayed home, I programmed our Java game from scratch 100%)
3. day (he comes again, gets my source code, changes games wallpaper and sets tick speed to 60 instead of 30.
He deletes my version on all presentation PCs because he thought his was "better")2 -
I'm starting to think we might need a global union for developers. I have been reading the comments today and it looks like a lot us getting way underpaid.
New features should be a moment of joy if they are released. So far so good. People really liked the idea of working together on opensource project. The app is updated. But then we encountered a major problem. It looks like some of us are getting so underpaid that they can't pay for the 14 dollar it cost to start the opensource project they want. We must rebel against this.
14 dollar, how much is 14 dollar. How many hobbies cost 14 dollar to start up. From running to collecting stamps. Its going to cost you more And how many hobbies are you as passionate about as your own open source project.
The next great thing is that it is show in the place where developers are eagerly looking to join a opensource project. And will probably join you're product because I'm sure between all of us there are tons of wonderfull ideas just waiting to be build.
And for me personal I do not mind supporting an app that I use almost every day. And just keeps growing without annoying ads.
So you should be more then willing to pay 14 dollars. And are ready to start recruiting your team.
And if you really can't pay. Your house burned down, you needed it for food. Your only pc is beyond saving. You can be a positive force in this community and do pay with upvotes.
But if you are to much a cheapskate to pay 14 dollars well, I think I was clear enough.5 -
Well creating game where you remember digits of Pi and and you try to beat PC there are 4 modes easy medium hard impossible and impossible is really impossible.
And there you have free mode too where you type all you remember and it will give you hints. And you learn it like that.
That's first project what is probably seriously going on G play.
Any ideas how to improve it ? -
I always hear devs talking about the many ideas they have in their minds to start projects. Am I the only one that can't imagine a project that is really usefull/profitable?6
-
So one year ago, when I was second year in college and first year doing coding, I took this fun math class called topics in data science, don't ask why it's a math class.
Anyway for this class we needed to do a final project. At the time I teamed up with a freshman, junior and a senior. We talked about our project ideas I was having random thoughts, one of them is to look at one of the myths of wikipedia: if you keep clicking on the first link in the main paragraph, and not the prounounciation, eventually you will get to philosophy page.
The team thought it was a good idea and s o we started working.
The process is hard since noe of us knew web scraping at the time, and the senior and the junior? They basically didn't do shit so it's me and the freshman.
At the end, we had 20000 page links and tested their path to philosophy. The attached picture is a visualization of the project, and every node is a page name and every line means the page is connected.
This is the first open project and the first python project that I have ever done. Idk if it is something good enough that I can out on my resume, but definitely proud of this.
PS: if you recognize the picture, you probably know me. If you were the senior or the junior in the team, I'm not sorry for saying you didn't do shit cuz that's the truth. If you were the freshman, I am very happy to have you as a teamate.2 -
Hey devrant!
I need some (programming) project ideas. Feel free to leave your ideas in the comments.
(Or not. I'm not forcing you)21 -
Serious Question/Poll
Imagine a job where instead of a worker, you're a partner. Hold on, I know that sounds markety...
Let's say instead of an employee, you're basically like a free agent. The company has a pool of projects that are approved to develop, and you can pick what project and what team to work on. More than that, you can even choose how much you want to work on it, and get paid accordingly in ownership stake of said project (on top of your base salary)
What if you were encouraged to submit your own ideas about everything, and that feedback is instantly public, before anyone (management) can water it down, take credit, or worse, suppress it entirely.
What if you could work from anywhere, home, not home, middle of the ocean, whatever.
Plus, we give you a budget to buy your own pc/mac whatever. As long as you can code on it, we don't give a shit.
Also, foosball and ping pong, beer, coffee, cool work environment and all that kind of shit too.
Paid training, for even whimsical new technology, in fact, especially so.
Want to do agile, fine, hate it? fine, just find the team and project that does what you want.
What else am I missing?17 -
We had a course where we, the students, got connected with companies who could pitch ideas for us to choose. So we were to develop something for a company for free, but that probably won't be so bad, right? When the course was over we told the company we would fix any critical bugs that appeared after the final prototype was developed. We only had 8 weeks to complete the project, and that includes documentation (project plan etc) and other "school stuff" like an essay on what we've learned and so on. In other words, didn't have enough time to develop what the company was really looking for. Still those guys is bugging us about minor bugs they want fixed or "could you just implement this feature" . The course is over, they have all the source code so they could hire someone else to do it (or us, you could pay us you know?) but nooooo they think we owe it to them. We gave them a fully functional application to use, free of charge, but that still isn't enough. And they threaten with "but you can use this in a future resume" (yea we had to sign a NDA). Fuck it, am I being a whiny bitch?4
-
I hate being sick. I have the brain power to come up with project ideas and the motivation to carry them through, but I don't have the brain power to actually do them.1
-
I like reading documentation.
BUT I really hate writing one for a project that I have nothing to do with it.
I am charged to write a documentation just because they think I am good on expressing and structuring ideas.
F_M_L3 -
Had a conference call for a fairly large internal project today. Everyone involved was there. Turns out the other subteams had done jack shit. Blablabla drafts and concepts bla, yeah right.
Then someone had the idea we needed an e-mail distribution list. But what's it gonna be called?
Suddenly *everyone* had an opinion and wanted their name used. And, in true "design by committee" fashion, everyone's ideas got merged.
Our list's name is now 30. fucking. characters. long. FUCK. you.
Luckily, I can leave the project this month. Can't wait... -
I'm four months in my new job and I've done 5 days worth of coding. There aren't much projects coming to our office nowadays so I'm being paid just to log my hours.
Any of the ranters here have any small project ideas I can make to pass the time?
I've literally run out of things to make.18 -
I want my super power to be 'not give a fuck' because I have almost perfected this super power, (I don't give a fuck about your thoughts mr customer, mr project manager your collective ideas are turd and I don't have enough polish and glitter left in my drawer to make this turd shine)
-
Actually finishing a project.
I am a person who gets a lot of ideas for projects I want to work on, then I start writing the code for them, then I reach a wall, stop and restart the cycle all over again.
Fuck my life.2 -
Rant about myself. When in a group situation where there is a very dominant coworker either related to skill or status with management. I always start out contributing ideas but after realizing my ideas are dumb or just dismissed I stop trying and just fade into the background and do what I am told. I also become detached from the project and start putting my energy into learning or side projects. I feel like such a wimp and pushover. I get told I don't have passion.6
-
I spent ALL of friday trying to get some code to work (some awful MS Analytic Server stuff). I usually finish at 6pm. I was getting very frustrated, as it's for a project that I've made some big promises on.
So at 5:30, I started throwing random ideas at it.
At 5:58, it worked.
My weekend has been a lot more relaxed than it otherwise might have been. Weirdly, this has been the second time in a month that I've got something working with minutes to spare on a Friday.1 -
My boss's SQL schema has no foreign keys and he said he left them out intentionally because they should be handled in the application layer and they're a large performance impact.
This is a fresh greenfield project and he's already pre-optimizing for problems we don't have yet, on things that may or not be bottlenecks using ideas (e.g. foreign keys have huge performance costs on mariadb/auora) with no hard data or facts to back them up.
Let's start a new project with some technical debt!2 -
I've been eyeing Rust for quite a while and it definitely caught my curiosity, specially after the SO survey. Now I want to learn Rust but I normally need to work on a project in order to actually learn and keep myself motivated, yet I have no idea what to start, any ideas?15
-
It's important to redo old projects and ideas, here is why:
I worked on a project about 6 months ago, it was mostly just a "coding challenge" and I worked on the project for 3 days and I didn't get it to work. But I started working on the project again from scratch 2 days ago and I got it to work this time!
The moral of this story:
Just making new projects makes it hard to see how much you've grown and improved. But redoing old projects (even if they worked) gives you a concrete representation on how much you've improved (and if you have at all😉)3 -
Multiple all-nighters (all day every day):
1) Working, studying and developing an Android game as pet project. Last few weeks before release (yup, I've set a deadline for a pet project) my day consisted of uni, work, more work and 4-5h sleep.
2) Having worked on my thesis (Development of a CPU/SoC + Firmware + Linux kernel) and actual paid work. In parallel. Because, you know, I need to eat and pay rent and shit while I'm writing the thesis. And debts at that moment were not an option (still made some). All-day all-night all-week. After submitting the thesis I went to the doc and enjoyed 2 weeks of doing nothing.
3) Sometimes on my main open-source project after regular work hours. If I have the motivation and ideas that I want to check out or prove it gets late/early too fast. -
CNC finished...
Can't do anything else (level it and such) until I get new motors...
the steppers I ordered one month ago returned back to China, FUCKKKKKK
one more month waiting.
So many project ideas.... nothing concrete.
What should I do now? Did my BT controlled car, the CNC, ... Any ideas?9 -
Hi everyone
I'm currently an intern in a startup
I started 3 months ago and I will finish in 1-2 months
From the beginning, all the team is very nice with me and say that I do a really great job
I could learn many many things and I can say my ideas during the project
This is a message to CEO/CEO, you see, if you offer a really good internship with interesting tasks and technologies, student like me are really motivated, want to learn, want to really participe to the project even if I do more hours than I have to do
Because we, students, are like you : interested in new technologies and great ideas
Offer good internship and you will be happy to have good and motivate intern in your Company
Thank you! -
Woke up super late (evening), was planning to work on my personal project, but didn't have a table where I can comfortably code and sketch out my ideas.
Hence, dressed up immediately and went to a furniture shop.
Getting table, chair and a bed (which I was planning for a long time) tomorrow.
Gonna just sit and code whole day tomorrow...2 -
Solo Android app developer here. It's 4AM where I'm working. Been working alone on a project for the last 20 days. Looking to get some inspiration and discuss new ideas with other devs.
So hi!
What's up with you? What do you do?20 -
Small company, sole engineer. Non-tech management. Increasingly fancy job titles despite working alone most of the time, with the promise of hiring someone (again) I can actually manage soon.
Backlog of projects/tasks is truly a mindfuck, with new things being added each week. This backlog will never ever get done, and nothing matters anyway because the next idea is "the future", all the time.
While I have influence on some aspects of decision making, it usually ends up being what the boss wants. Actively opposed a project because it's just too big of an undertaking, it was forced through anyway. I'm trying to keep the scope manageable as I'm building it now, and it's hard.
"It's the future, we absolutely have to do this. It will be the biggest thing we've ever done."
Boss's excitement then quickly faded since it's actually in development, now nobody really seems to want to know where it's at, or how it will all work. I need to scope it out, with the knowledge that many decisions boss signed off will be questioned when he actually looks at it. We now have even more "exciting" ideas of utter grandeur. Stuff that I can't even begin to comprehend the complexity of, while struggling to keep a self imposed deadline on the current one.
Every single morning we sit on Zoom for a "valuable" "catch-up". This is absolutely perfect for one thing: Completely destroying whatever drive and focus I have going into the day. Unrelated topics, marketing conversations, even more ideas, ideas for ideas sake, small problems blown out of proportion, the list goes on. I recently argued in detail why it should be scrapped or at least be optional to attend. No luck, it's "valuable".
Today a new idea was announced, and we absolutely have to do it ASAP because it can only be better than the current solution. I raise my concerns, saying it's not as easy as you make it out to be, we should properly think about it. Nope! We'll botch something to prove that it works... So you'll base your decision whether it's good on some half ass botch job that nobody really has the mental capacity to actually pay attention to. What a reliable way to measure!
"Our analytics data isn't useful enough to tell us the impact of things we do. We (you) have to fix this." Over the last 2 or so years, I've been pushing for an overhaul and expansion of our data analysis capabilities for exactly this reason. Integrating different data sources into a unified solution so we can easily see what we're doing, etc. Nope, never happened.
The new project idea which is based on wild assumptions is ALWAYS more important than the groundwork.
Now when I mentioned that this is what I wanted to do all along, it got brushed aside. "We don't need to do anything complicated, just fix this, add that, and it's done. It should be an easy thing to do. This is very important for our decision making." Fine, have it your way.
I'm officially burned out. It's so fucking hard to get myself to focus on my work for more than an hour or two. I started a side project, and even that effort is falling victim to my day-job-induced apathy.
I'm tempted to hand in my resignation without another offer on the table. I just need time to rediscover my passion, and go job hunting from that position, instead of the utter desperation of right now.
If you've read through all this rambling, kudos to you!8 -
That moment when you edit the Todo list for your personal project, add a bunch of ideas and the proceed in procastinating like you did before and feel _very_ productive about it.2
-
Warning: this is not a rant. I'm too happy and excited to rant right now.
Today I "finished" my first webpage!!!
Wohooo!
It's the blog I'll use. It's currently offline for obvious reasons but I intend to put it out there when I have more confidence on my skills and some content to put in it. I only used django, html and css, and I really dig the looks of it. My gf liked it so it can't be that ugly.
I still have a lot to learn with django, and I will add a thing or two to this
webpage but now I feel confident enough to make the backbone of my first real project : a platform to ease essay writing for history students. It's something simple for students to keep track of their essays thesis and ideas but also the bibliography they'll use and the thesis and ideas they think each text they read for the essay has. I intend later to extend the functionality so it can store all the texts the user has used in some useful and atractive manner so they can keep track of everything they've read, share it and use it for later works.
I'm so fucking excited I can't fucking sleep (it's 3 am right now).13 -
I used to check what local market wants, but after joining devRant I noticed local market sometimes feels in stone age, so since February 2017, devRant is best place to learn either asking, or checking what others are doing it a helps in getting ideas on what kind of project and language needs to be done for the sake of learning
-
I see a lot of rants on this platform complaining about their boss/management.
About how they don't understand how complicated the development can be of seemingly simple tasks or how they would prefer small estimations over realistic ones.
Is that really the standard in this field of work?
Am I just that lucky to find basically the ideal boss on my first try?
My boss really understands how difficult some tasks can be even if they don't initially seem like it. He listens to my ideas as if they are at least just as important as his own. He can almost think like a real developer and is prepared to give us all tools we could want to evolve.
It is a very small firm and I'm basically the only real developer on this project, but I would follow that man to the ends of the earth.
Can some people please clear my conscience and confirm there are still good managers in this field who really care about their project and their employees/colleagues?7 -
When I post a collab and someone asks me how the project is going and how much the progress..
Inside me: oh boy, I just post ideas here.. not time for implementation1 -
Project ideas:
Make my own social media
|
V
Maybe they could share games instead of pictures
|
V
How about they can make their own games instead
|
V
I should add a drag and drop system to make it easier
I think I just re invented scratch xD1 -
Don't you love it when you're in a full-on creative mood but the whole universe is somehow working against you doing anything productive?
Woke up in the morning with bright ideas for my app. But my PC restarted and my IDE crashed. After getting the IDE up, the project no longer builds. After spending hours to try and fix it, reinstall IDE and ............... voila............... everything works. I mean WTF?1 -
Why the FUCK are my project ideas so easy to implement. I wanted to make a static site sharing webpage (imagine github pages), and i fucking made it in 2 hours?????? Fuck me, does anyone know something like codewars or something but with project ideas instead of algorithms?5
-
A Google app that would let you tag good skating locations on Google maps. The idea itself wasn't stupid, there was just already a more generalized app that did a damn good job of it already. (That's how I figured out that most "like (blank) but for (blank)" project ideas are dumb)3
-
At night is when my creativity starts flowing like a motherfucker. The moment when all the tasks are done for the day and you can start working on your own projects and just lay back and smoke (or drink, whichever you prefer) and zone the fuck out with some good music. Oh and if I've gotten a good work out in that day, then there's no stopping me.
I had no plans to even create an admin panel for my own small project but last night I made one just to make it look professional. After that, I got an idea for a separate project which I started working on. I usually write my ideas down so that I don't get into a complete project cluster fuck with 50 half completed projects, but sometimes you get that golden one that you have to start (currently those are the only two unfinished projects I got). -
I really need to vent. Devrant to the rescue! This is about being undervalued and mind-numbingly stupid tasks.
The story starts about a year ago. We inherited a project from another company. For some months it was "my" project. As our company was small, most projects had a "team" of one person. And while I missed having teammates - I love bouncing ideas around and doing and receiving code reviews! - all was good. Good project, good work, good customer. I'm not a junior anymore, I was managing just fine.
After those months the company hired a new senior software engineer, I guess in his forties. Nice and knowledgeable guy. Boss put him on "my" project and declared him the lead dev. Because seniority and because I was moved to a different project soon afterwards. Stupid office politics, I was actually a bad fit there, but details don't matter. What matters is I finally returned after about 3/4 of a year.
Only to find senior guy calling all the shots. Sure, I was gone, but still... Call with the customer? He does it. Discussion with our boss? Only him. Architecture, design, requirements engineering, any sort of intellectually challenging tasks? He doesn't even ask if we might share the work. We discuss *nothing* and while he agreed to code reviews, we're doing zero. I'm completely out of the loop and he doesn't even seem to consider getting me in.
But what really upsets me are the tasks he prepared for me. As he first described them they sounded somewhat interesting from a technical perspective. However, I found he had described them in such detail that a beginner student would be bored.
A description of the desired behaviour, so far so good. But also how to implement it, down to which classes to create. He even added a list of existing classes to get inspiration or copy code from. Basically no thinking required, only typing.
Well not quite, I did find something I needed to ask. Predictably he was busy. I was able to answer my question myself. He was, as it turns out, designing and implementing something actually interesting. Which he never had talked about with me. Out of the loop. Fuck.
Man, I'm fuming. I realize he's probably just ignorant. But I feel treated like his typing slave. Like he's not interested in my brain, only in my hands. I am *so* fucking close to assigning him the tasks back, and telling him since I wasn't involved in the thinking part, he can have his shitty typing part for himself, too. Fuck, what am I gonna do? I'd prefer some "malicious compliance" move but not coming up with ideas right now.5 -
TL;DR: I'm stressed out over choosing a side project because of the commitment and fear of failure :(
I'm a student and summer vacation starts in 3 days (and actually has already started for me, thanks to a "smartly planned" hospital stay), so I'm currently looking for a cool project to start. This will be my third summer vacation during which I want to make complete a project, and I never actually did it. The first year, I couldn't think of any reasonable, doable project which would be interesting and fitting for the time scope (I was quite new to programming back then, so I probably couldn't have done things that would be interesting to me, an any project that I could've done would just take 20 minutes, cause I wouldn't understand anything more complex). The second time, I chose a project too big with too much new things I had to learn on the go. I actually pushed through for nearly a week, but then I realized that I only completed like 25% in that time, so I lost my motivation, thinking I could never finish it, while not wanting to start a complete new project, because that would've felt like wasting the time I put into my first project. It was still a valuable project and I learned a lot by doing it, but this year I want to actually finish a project; so I'm really stressed out right now trying to come up with a good project.
Usually I have millions of vague ideas in my head, but as soon as it comes to choosing, every single one seems to be the wrong one, or I forget about all of them. Everything that kinda interests me seems way to big and complicated to me, but I sometimes feel like I'm just underestimating my abilities, but on the other hand I have ~25 projects on my hard drive, of which 4 or 5 are finished and most will never be finished. :/
And it's just so overwhelming to choose something like that, because on one hand I really want to do a bigger project that I actually finish, and summer vacation is the only time I have so much time to code, and I love coding, but on the other hand choosing such a project that I will work 2-3 weeks on is too much commitment and also I'm anxious about failing it and never finish it, just abandon a buggy mess. Am I the only one to feel that way, or are you too having problems choosing side problems?
And, I guess if you have any ideas for a suitable project (literally anything, so that I might be exposed to some new ideas), just comment it.14 -
Anyone have one of the new MacBook Pros with Touchbar? I'm looking for some project ideas to work on.
I already am working on a project for the Pi-hole project (network wide ad-blocking) but I am looking for some other good ideas. I think Apple's view of the Touchbar fell short, but as developers I think it opens up a lot of possibilities to use it as a great information/monitoring tool.
I am also still learning Objective-C and Swift so I am a newbie.5 -
Anyone here has an idea of a project to do in Java and Spring (REST stuff) ?
I'm out of ideas :/ and I really want something to build in Java and keep me busy for a while.7 -
Be me at work, 12h nights shift, 4th day like that
Following online course on machine learning, instructor says we'll use python 3.x as the interpreter for the project, boot personal laptop and start pycharms, create the file, choose right interpreter no big deal
pip install the modules I need for the course - done, try to import them.
Doesn't work, first reboot, still not working, browsing Internet for answers, no ideas, reboot again (you never know) reload pycharms, browse Internet again, find out the modules only work on python 2.7.
Wasted 45minutes for this shit
Feels good bro.2 -

Hi, everyone!
Time for a new great collab project!
Read the above rant I posted previously to see what our class is...
So the teacher(who uses visual c++ ide made in the 1990s) said to make an android based application or make a game but without using any block programming (like scratch) which means for android app development, we should make in java, js, c#, or any app makin' programming language. For game development, we should use either unity(yes, I am good at it) or unreal or gamemaker or buildbox. LibGDX is not allowed (I wonder how the teacher knows this library... strange).
Any ideas upon making apps or games? Prefer apps btw...
Something using SQLite or database will be appreciated but not dull student management system.
Any ideas appreciated.2 -
The feeling I had when my final year project idea hit me.
I am so excited and relieved.
It's hard to come up with project ideas this days, really!!! -
My dream project is to continue and improve my gaming website. It's a blog & community that's supportive of (but not limited to) female gamers. It's a positive place for gamers of any type to go, judgement free.
I have so many big ideas for the site, a forum, possibly user profiles, gaming quizzes and trivia, lots more ways to interact. I would love to do like a "find the right game for you" type of thing and have more time to blog..but I just simply don't have the time right now. :(
Baby steps for now. 🎮4 -
Me: I wanna learn Go by writing a side project that might get me a few stars on Github.
Also me: But I don't have any original ideas. Would be nice if I could just take advantage of some other project's popularity.
End result => https://github.com/palash25/...4 -
So this group of students (mostly girls) from university approached us to make them a prototype app for their semester's project, we had a first reunion to know about the idea and what they wanted us to do.
All they talked about was the color and some minor design stuff, we still don't exactly know what we're doing since it was difficult for us to get them to actually define the requirements and what the app should do.
We were supposed to have a second reunion for us to show them some ideas but the day of the meeting they didn't reply any of our messages.
I'm not the kind of guy who gets upset easily, but if you ask us for help and then let us hanging not really knowing what to do with your shitty project, fuck you.2 -
Hey devs,
I'm really bad at personal project idea generation.
So, do you have any good Python project ideas?
PS. Wanna light up my github chart again.
(aaand to put it in my CV of course)4 -
Ok devRantia. I have a pretty important question. I need project experience and I have zero ideas. Also i'm 14 and can't exactly be reputable enough to land a freelance job om upwork. I am trying to build a good portfolio so that universities or companies will take me a little more seriously when I apply. Any ideas on how to go about this or some projects for me to do?10

I saw a lot of project ideas relate to music. But we don't listen music nowadays. Our phone doesn't even have a headphone jack.🙄5

Me: *ranting to my friend who isn’t a dev (but is in IT and a good knowledge of networking) about a problem I came across in my project.
“I don’t know how I’ll send folders”
Him: “just compress it before hand and decompress when it’s sent”
Me: *mind fucked*
Have any of you guys gotten surprisingly good ideas from non programmers?12 -
I'm leaving my current job in a week. What is a great prank I can pull off on my team before/after leaving the company?
I'm more interested in a long con which plays out slowly after I leave (maybe on April fool's?) Please share if you got any cool ideas or experience.
Context: I designed and built a web app which is used to manage stuff (CRUD) related to my project internally.
I would really love to hear some funny and non-destructive suggestions.12 -
A PM who suck-up to a creative technologist. He comes up with ideas while me, the programmer, have to figure how to get it done.
PM expects me to explain how things can or cannot be done. I spent whole day drawing diagrams explaining things, while the creative technologist makes demand after demand.
For me, the worst project manager is one who doesn't take care of their people.
N The worst creative technologist, is one who won't go do their own fucking research and expect the developers to do it.
Both fuckers are management roles. Go figure..1 -
Hey guys.
This was my project for today.
Power supply, 5v USB 25A x2; 12V 10A x2; extra power standard cables to power HDDs and such.
Plus a sand paper whatever it's called :p
Ps: Need to know how to power it without the standart power supply, with cables direct to the brush motor pins. Anyone knows? Have arduinos, l293, easy shields, uln2003a... Would one of this work?
Hope you guys like my 🤪 ideas5 -

So I've been self teaching myself Python, which I've loved learning. However I hit a wall. I'm terrible with large project ideas, which has brought everything to a halt.
Being that I loved learning python, I'm thinking of picking up a second language to fill the void & expand my knowledge. I've dabbled a little bit in Java & Haskell. Go looks pretty interesting.
In your opinion what would be a good complementary language to Python?9 -
Any HTML / Frontend designers here who could share their opinion on the following:
A company project of mine is basically a document store with a (deep) folder hierarchy.
The deep folder hierarchy is not negotiable / changeable.
However my brain fries when I try to come up with a - mobile friendly / responsible - design.
There are ~ 10 - 15 root folders, having a maximum of 3 subfolders, so:
Folder 1 -> Documents
Folder 1 -> Subfolder of 1 -> Documents
Folder 2 -> Subfolder of 2 -> Documents
...
Any ideas on howto design something like that?
Was thinking about using a top navigation for the folders and then the rest of the screen for the document information...
But with 15 elements in top navigation it would be hard to navigate on mobile I think....
The naming and everything else ist managed by the customer.
Any ideas?6 -

This weekend was supposed to be a productive one, I was going to start with a little project that I want to do and replenish some hours of work, sadly I decided to install VS code and configure it, 5 hours invested already, fuck a me and my stupid ideas1 -
I want to do something data-science-y.
Gimme project ideas, and where can I get the data for it?
Also, not looking for machine learning, just basic data analysis stuff.
I'm bored.11 -
I wanna create something but lack any sort of creative energy
How do you all come up with project ideas, how do you deal with not knowing how to design something?16 -
...a project with well defined requirements that doesn't change shape every day making useless any attempt to define a solid code structure...my dear client I can do all you want but you can't change your ideas every 10 minutes
-
Coworker pushed some changes and gave me good reason to rant.
Here's my story:
I start implementing a new feature, senior reviews it and suggest some changes, which are actually good ideas. I continue developing and implement the suggested changes.
The next day, senior keeps working on outdated source and makes similar changes like i did on the day before. Just pushes it anyway and breaks fucking everything.
The api now contains redundant information.
My classes still exist, but aren't used anymore. Let's keep some redundant code in the project, because deleting it is so much work.
All the unit tests broke, but he just commented them out, so everything is green again. We have now 0 tests which actually do something in the project, but at least the build is green...1 -
Dream.
When you sketch out a plan for a new project with lots of awesome ideas! Then you see how long this will take xD -
I have 2 states:
- Having about a dozen interesting project ideas and not being able to decide which of them I want to tackle first
- Having 0 ideas and absolutely no clue about what to do now.2 -
Does anybody has an idea what to "code" when you have too much free time? I am done with school and waiting for my university acceptance. No Websites.
TL;DR
Project ideas?14 -
Job review time,

Me, or everybody else.
I have bipolar disorder, it’s not entirely a bad thing because sometimes my mind flies and bizarre ideas just flush into my mind, ideas that eventually prove to be useful. However, not everyone can catch up my thinking speed.
This year for my senior capstone project, I teamed up with other three brilliant students. In the middle of the project I proposed a very aggressive method when our initial model failed, but they couldn’t understand my method. Towards the end of the semester I basically finished the project alone and claimed that they were just repeating what I was doing, and they didn’t realize that until the last week. At the end, the guy who’s always in charge of the other two people said that I was right, that the very aggressive method could have worked if given them more time to think about it.
I am both relieved and sorry at that moment. I cannot explain my ideas and that leads to my teams confusion.
I am still the same guy now, haven’t changed, will still be a pain in the ass when work with other people, I tried to be patient, but idk if it was just me being too impatient or others are too dumb.
I really tried......6 -
Aaarfgh,
I'm out of ideas!
I need a new project to spend my time on,
Any ideas?
PS:I suck at frontend8 -
My first rant in ages:
Been assigned to a new Laravel project at work and the murthafucking lead dev got no fucking clue how to architect a big laravel app. Lead dev talking trash about encapsulation and every big oop grammar he can find while asking us to come up with an architecture concept for the app.
My annoyance is, the fecking project been in planning for like 7 months and d lead dev keeps saying he is looking for ideas on how we will build the app. Fuck this shit!1 -
I have a project idea:
Web app that will automatically generate random like-a-facebook project ideas that will handle the buisness side and automatically post that offer on multiple forums, linkedin and send email with it. All using AI, Nural Networks, Big Data and VR.
Seriously, once fucking more some african or indian guy messages me to work for his awesome "its like a facebook but different" idea where he needs "just backend, frontend and mobile apps" and that he will just "handle the rest" and that "have no money now but after I sign a NDA he will give me some shares", I am gonna find him and shit on his head. Monday did not even ended yet and I already read 9 "offers" like this on my mail and facebook, only one guy white, rest indians or africans.
Why are then people suprised that we consider black and indian devs as a fucking joke 90% of the time. I have a indian dev friend and he could not find a dev job for 2 months, because everyone would rather work with less skilled asian / white guy than indian / black guy. This is not about racism, but about those retards that are acting like idiots. Hope I did not offend anyone (unless you do shit like this, then, please just smash your keyboard over your head).
Words like AI and neural networks are used just to lure the investors to our gofundme campain and steal their money after 2 years of silence.1 -
I like being diverse in what I can program. I like software development, web development, networking programming, I’m starting to get into embedding programming and using lower level languages like C/C++ (I’ve used them before but not for anything practical) and I enjoy the diversity. It makes me feel good knowing I can extend my programming knowledge.
Also I like having project ideas lined up so I know what I want to do next. And if I don’t finish one I know is easy but I can’t figure out, I CANT MOVE ON! I have to finish it. It’ll drive me fucking nuts.11 -

How do you come up with side projects? I'm currently looking for a side project that will be useful for me, an maybe for others in the long run.
Any suggestions? What do you think the market needs right now?
Keep in mind I'm currently a student so I don't have a lot of money to spend on investments.5 -
I have this bad habit of starting projects that are way out of my league after getting ridiculously over-ambitious ideas.
”Yeah, let me just do this <insert ambitious project in an area of programming I know next to nothing about> with <insert languge I’ve never written a line with before>. It’ll be fine...” -
We have this guy at the company who always presents good ideas and always suggests new projects. One day he suggested a great project, our boss really liked the idea and gave me the green light to start creating it.
The guy, seeing the opportunity to promote himself, and without consulting me about the deadline, set up a meeting to present the application to the directors, and only then informed me about the deadline. At that moment I did my part, told him that it would not be possible to meet the deadline with all the requirements, something had to be withdrawn, and that's what he did, took a lot of things from the project and we went on like this.
While I was implementing the application, he was always pushing, asking me to do it faster, asking my boss to put me exclusively in his project, and things like that, the boss was always saying that there were not enough people on the team to devote someone exclusively to the project. The guy of course did not agree with that.
At the end the application, without a lot of the initial requirements, was a really mess but ready, he presented to the directors, who in turn liked a lot, and consequently asked to do all the initial requirements and some more. But now those initial requirements had to be made on top of a mess because of all the rush and adaptations.
A few months later, with the change of the board, the guy turned up being my boss, and I've prepared myself to go back to his project with exclusive dedication.
Then came the surprise, when the guy, in the boss position, realized the limitations of the team, instead of putting me to do everything he wanted in that project, he canceled the project entirely and for all the reasons that had already been said to him by the former boss.
Please, don't be like that guy!2 -
I don't know how many of you have faced this but fuck college student entrepreneurs!
Every one of these fuckers is all about the hustle and the grind which mainly involves them sitting on their ass and approaching me with ideas that they think will revolutionize the world
AND WHY'RE ALL YOUR IDEAS CENTERED AROUND SOCIAL NETWORKS? DO I LOOK LIKE FREAKIN ZUCKERBERG (I probably bombed the spelling but IDC)
I decided to work on a project (can't disclose any information cause the idiot had me sign a paper or some shit) and they gave me and 2 other devs a task of creating FUCKING ANGELLIST
look man, could be an easy task for your "business team" of 7 to give that task but do you really expect me to work with 2 loud mouthed freshmen who don't know shit and give you a finished product? I DONT THINK SO -
When you're so exhausted that the weekend isn't enough for you to reset anymore, that your manager won't pull you off the project because client likes you (or that he just doesn't want to lose the project), that you can't quit, or kill yourself (because you start getting those ideas), since sister depends on you financially and you just care for her that much, you just keep going, wearing your smiling face at all times, trying to continue shitting code because it's your job, and what's left of you deep inside is yelling for help.
Man, do I need a new job.
No worries people. I just really need some whining right now. Hopefully I get news from my latest interviews. -
Hey guys...
Ever visited https://www.instructables.com ??
DMNNNN I just can't leave... So many cool Ideas...
I don't have anything to do with the site, found it yesterday while searching for arduino stuff, and MANNNN .... It has the best pratical tutorials I ever saw... Not like most, where they teach you the basics...
Most sites, first arduino APP, light a Led
Instructables, First App, Instructions with pictures and videos on how do connect the Arduino, install IDE (this is the most basic tutorial after all). then the tutorial, Light 4 leds and do a lightshow...
:p
I'm In Love
Btw, new project, got my old Niko Dc Car working again, after like 30 years...2 -
Ok so I am in this robotics course, we meet every 5 weeks from 8 to 15:30 to work on our projects. It's really nice because I can basically do what I want all day and don't have school! Fuck yeah... The only downside is that there are a lot of wannabe scientists who think they know everything about physics and computer science.
However the actualy reason I am writing this is to ask you for project ideas. I would like to do something with a raspberry pi but I can't come up with any ideas that I would like to do. Also making it should cost me less than 100€
(I already have a pi so I wouldn't have to pay for that).
So, any ideas? :)1 -
So I've been really into steampunk fashion lately. And I really want to build a steampunk themed PC. It sounds like a very fun project, and I've put together a few ideas so far. Like possibly having custom waterblocks (or just modifying existing ones) shaped as gears, using two reservoirs in a goggle shape, full brass tubing, etc. It makes me sad that I can't afford to build it right now2
-
Who are these people?
Who have side projects?
Where do they find the time?
Where do they get the motivation from?
Where do they get ideas from?
My manager recently created an android game as a side project... He also suggested me to have side projects if I wanna grow fast :/
I, wake up, pick up some motivation to finish office work (which I actually like) and it's already evening!
Is something wrong with me?11 -
That moment when your gamedesigner manages to make the game completely unplayable with just 2 weeks of bad ideas.
I already gave up on this project, just want to finish it and never look at it again.1 -
Music, but if it has words they need to be foreign. J-rock, deadmau5, gogo penguin, carrion... All are good.
Dark themes everywhere unless it's java, because it helps me compartmentalise my languages.
Second screen hooked up with the stuff I want to be viewable all the time, as it doesn't change when I switch workspaces. (bug or a feauture?)
Door shut to muffle sounds from the rest of the house, window slightly open so I don't suffocate.
Pomodoro timer on, but put phone into silent mode so no notifications disrupt my focus.
Drinks and bathroom breaks happen in the 5 minutes between pomodoro sprints. Food happens in the 15 minute breaks.
Extra RAM stick is in the mail so I lose less time waiting for android studio to exhale or whatever it's doing as it holds up the whole computer.
I might just do the java parts of my project in bluej if this ram stick doesn't alleviate my problems. I could go outside and drink mud through a metre long straw with a filter on the end sooner than android studio gets unstuck.
If anyone can add more sensible ideas I'd be happy :)1 -
Starting a new side project, that I believe and my close friends believe will take off, want someone to bounce ideas off of, sadly I'm afraid someone will steal the idea :(9
-
I have a side project that I really want to finish but I'm already having ideas for two other side projects! Help me!1
-
Actually finish something dev-related outside of my classes. I've picked up a lot of unrelated project ideas and every time I find a new one, it gets pushed on top of the stack instead of at the end of the queue.1
-
Group project meetings in uni. All of them. Noone ever speaks and you're trying to suggest ideas. Noone disagrees with you and when it's time for the next meeting, apparently everyone just did their own thing.. fml1
-
I've probably spent more time on refactoring than on actual coding with this personal project. The problem is, ideas come to me while developing, and that means I have to go back and change things every time. Is that normal or is there a better way?3
-
Gahhhh!!!! I just finished a project that let every kid in my school have a perfect class scheduler, gradebook, etc., in java. Now I have no idea what to do. I want to do something in java because I want to have a very strong base in the language. Do you guys have any ideas?4
-
Does anyone knows a Syncing / Self Hosted Cloud Solution that has native Integration for Windows and Ubuntu?
I want some shared storage between my Laptop and my PC. Save a project on one side, grab the laptop goes to a friend and work there with the data, without uploading / downloading the files manually or using some web interface for that.
I have also a root server with stroage and internet. So if it happens automagicly in background it would be fine.
Is there a good solution out there? Or some ideas / frameworks to programm it by myself?
Diff and merges are not needed. I never will work on both systems at the same time.6 -
Thinking of ideas is not so much about them being unique as it is about tackling them in a unique way.
The only bad idea you can have is giving up on the last. -
How do I handle working with my coworker?
He can be a bit half cocked with his pursuit of ideas. We're supposed to be working as a team on a project, and he'll often forget to cc me on emails. Or he'll go and talk to other people (make decisions) without discussing it with me.
Am I ovary acting? (heh) No, but seriously, I think it's benign behavior, butI feel uncomfortable by it. The last time I brought this up to him... He nearly cried. He was very hurt. What should I do? Be more aggressive?
I was a student leader throughoyt undergrad, but I feel like if we say something is a team project that we should be trying to work together. Feels like he doesn't know what that even means.4 -
Spaghetti codes makes a person feel frustrated, non-productive even slightly depressed, and even do refractoring takes time of production and slows things down in the short term there's nothing like that "new feeling " after you successfully re-organize and re-structure a project.
The skies seem more blue the motivation re-appears and new ideas make the project feel worth it of your time again -
Any summer project ideas to step-up my programming skills? I'm bored but also not very creative when it comes to projects.7
-
!rant: I need a little advice from fellow devs. I've come to the conclusion that development is not the right career path for me, but how to advance from here?
I've worked a little over a year as dev/scrum master and lately I've been assigned small project management tasks. I really liked the project management stuff, and I like talking to stakeholders and converting their ideas into well described requirements and development tasks.
But who will hire a junior level engineer with no formal project manager training or certifications?
What kind of jobs could I apply for?1 -
Soon I’ll be unemployed (on purpose) and will spend some time on my own project ideas.
Pretty much each of them will require an API..
Already started with the first one using python + flask, but I’m planning to do each of them in a different language..
What do you propose? What’s the most fun and the most interesting technology in your opinion?
I’m senior in Java and advanced in JS, / Node so it won’t be any of those and I’m also not a fan of PHP :)5 -
I just crave to start an open-source project. It's just that I don't feel like doing it alone. Anywone up for doin' something stupid? I have a few silly ideas in mind 😅
(Yeah, I need some other project than work...)
(Oh, right. Didn't feel like posting this over at the collab section. Felt to vague.)7 -
So here's what I'm putting up with for the last 6 months, clients..
A client proposed to me a project he had in mind. Project is pretty solid, could have a bright future. Since they didn't have the money to spend, we agreed on a % of the income they will earn from the project. So, let's say I get 20% of the income in exchange for building the application. I didn't receive any down payment or payment of any kind.
Just for info, project is a Web application/portal and it is ~80% done at the moment. Client provided a logo and a wireframe/ideas/pictures how he sees the project. I built everything, from DB to Frontend. Also, project is completely custom made, no CMS or anything. Project will make profit by subscription base, every user of the project pays.
For various reasons, we did not yet sign a contract. So, what is my issue...
Client sent me his proposal of the contract, said it's solid stuff, just sign it. In the contract, it stated that he owns the application in full, can sell it, etc. and I get % of the price. There were also other sneaky parts about me having all the responsibility but owning nothing. I naturally declined and took a lawyer to construct a normal contract.
My proposal was/is, I own the application(source code) in full. They are obligated to pay the monthly percentage and can use the application normally and make profit. At any time, application can be bought by the client if they pay for the development. So, basically, they are getting the application to use "for free" with no initial payment/investment. And this is a long term deal, they can use is as this as long as they want. Also, if they go bankrupt at any time, no penalty or payment is needed, the risk is mine.
The client refused and what he claims is the following...
His share in the project is 80%, mine is 20%. If project is to be sold, I get 20% of the price. So, meaning, if we go to production tomorrow, if I want to buy his share, I have to buy 80% of the application I built entirely. Also he is convinced that by "telling me" what to built he's owning everything. In his words, he dictated me the notes and I'm just playing the violin.
I am having trouble explaining to him that he is getting the application to use and make profit basically for free and cannot and does not own the source code unless he buys it off. We are going in circles, I send him the contract to review, he changes it and returns it back. Also, he removes the parts where it is clearly states what he provided and what was done by me.
So, we kind off agreed on the authorship but in the case we break the contract he wants to be able to use the application for 3 more years.
Was anyone here in a similar situation? How do you handle this kind of situations?3 -
So there's this remote guy on my team that basically doesn't do much and when it does fucks up. This is a guy with a lot experience but it doesn't seem even give a fuck. He doesn't pay attention to standups and he has more time than me in the project but doesn't know that much about it. There are rare times when he gives good ideas. However this happena so rarely that it is awful to work with him.1

Hey guys
spent all day with a new project, maybe you guys can help.
I have two p2p cameras that I want to setup and access when my family goes on vacation.
Cameras are working (with mildly success) , now, what Is the best option to access them from the Internet?
I can send e-mails, but can't config the SMTP server (don't know why always gives connection error, but guessing that maby this kind of products are blocked from sending e-mails), tried Gmail, mail, and Hotmail.
ftp-server.. don't have any online (have a VPS with 200 mb free ram...)
Tips? ideas?
Thanks, guys12 -
Hey Guys. I need to do a Project in School. Ist can last about 3-5 Months but I have no fking idea what to do.. You Guys have some good ideas? Best would be in Web Technologiea5
-
I'm trying to work on my first full stack project and been looking a lot up for it.
Dear god there's so many options and everyone says theirs is the best so I look it up and so many of them have absolute trash documentation.
Honestly at this point I've spent more time finding different peices to make the service than actually developing my service or ideas.
I really need to convince a couple friends to help me with this... -
Thanking of doing a machine learning project, simple but real life. Suggest ideas! I have one in mind - tic tac toe.3
-
I have to make a project in java in this semester. Any ideas???
Not too tough/nor too easy.. Can't decide any topic...14 -
Create a worker-owned co-op devoted to creating tech for the labour movement.
I have several project ideas brewing ☺️☺️☺️ -
I've been travelling for 5 weeks, now I have the issue of too many project ideas, which one first?!3
-
Why is it so easy to just keeping thinking to yourself, I really want to do this project. Then literally never want to actually touch it, so many great ideas filling up multiple text files strewn between devices. Stupid motivation.
-
I’m working on a side project just to not die from the repetitive college workload
I want to public the GitHub page so I can get more feedback then when I occasionally can show my teacher. As well as get advice and ideas from a larger group of people who all have more knowledge and skills than me.
But every time I think about pressing that button to show the world, I get worried about embarrassing myself, like this is my first large scale project all on my own. Using tools and a language I’m teaching myself in my free time with occasional advice from my teacher. What if it’s so horrible I just make a fool of myself
What does devRant think??1 -
just gave half a dozen of ideas to my teacher for my final year computer science project. and it all got pulled down 😑😑😤..... an automated home system, car driver alerter, a drone..but nop..8
-
I am currently trying to figure out how to deal with this frustration of putting everything that i'm learning in practice. I've been studying for a long time and I don't know yet how to start my own project, and I have so many ideas. This feeling is very bad. Am I doing something wrong?3
-
I need ideas for my honours project. I'm a web dev student so I want to create a website.
The trouble is, there's not much I'm passionate enough about to create a website for. It also needs to have some form of research in it.
I was thinking something based on VR but I'm not sure.
Ideas?3 -
Not using git{,hub} (at the earliest)
One does not simply keep a track of changes being performed every now and then in an entire project.
Lost some ideas or sometimes the entire project :/ -
I Have 2 Questions.
A. does anyone here look down on webdevs?
B. Any Good project Ideas (For Electron.js)12 -
I start by diving straight into the code. A blank brand new file in whatever language I have chosen to create my project in. If it's a language I'm unfamiliar with, I'll start with some templates of getting started (for example, I wanted to make a node.js application with a connected website, so I found some code using express to link the two together).
Once I've started, I'll eventually create a text file for ideas which I may or may not plan to implement later. If a particular feature is rather complex, I'll draw it out on my whiteboard, giving me a visual guide to help me.
My main aim is to simply get a "foot in the door"; once that's achieved, it makes working on the project much more enjoyable. I tend to turn it into a bit of "play" by coming up with suggestions which I would probably not implement in my final design, but add just for the fun of it. If I chose to drop those ideas, I'll save the code - chances are, I would have learnt something new in the process (For example, I learnt how to perform GET requests and figured out what cURL was for the first time by simply adding a "dad joke generator" to a discord bot, just for a laugh) -
Develop the IT culture of students, facilitate speech and ideas. Replace targeted narrow project by problems they need to solve by their own means.
-
I hate when you finish a project, and have no idea what to work on next! I despise feeling so idle!4
-
Nobody has any use from a 80% finished project (so not finished at all) except it was a lot of time and money to get to that point. Oh boy I need to make progress on about 500 different projects to get them to a useful stage.
Also very important lesson: Dont have your anxiety take over when facing the "omg I have a 6 digit number of things on my 2do list" because you can't say no to the "awesome" ideas you have.
Also: I have made a rule for myself that prevents me from starting/working on a side project when I have important deadlines on main projects2 -
At the beginning of a new project, I have many ideas and plans how the things are able to go, but with the time I realise that only a piece of all works.
Are you like me? 😜 -
I have this fried that gives me some advice on how to find work, he said i need to come up with a project idea as something to put on my CV and also as a way to learn front-end dev.
Easy enough if not for the fact that this project should be something that's actually useful and has some concept behind it (like, something that might seemingly work for a startup)
I've been raking my brain for a week now, and all i can come up with is small meme projects, neat but sort of inconsequential experiments, or things that might be useful to me but have no reason to be web-based.
I never realized how hard it is for me to come up with professional-sounding project ideas :D
I'm just not that kind of guy, i don't really have the drive or motivation to do anything professional: If people wanna use my rice or whatever spaghetti software i create they are welcome to, i'll even write them some documentation, but its just kinda out there on the internet because i like sharing. I don't really have any grand product ideas, nor do i really care about what other people think or need.3 -
Fellow Freelancers, can you recommend a platform you use to track and share project progress with your clients?
What do you typically use to keep clients updated about project status? There a Fancy SaaS solution or do you use a simple excel file??
Would like some ideas and recos!4 -
Hey everyone :-) - Hope you're all doing well & Staying safe, i just have a question for you all, i have a project i am working on which is a command line tool to track my storage on my PC & laptop, right now it outputs my remaining space, used space and storage capacity :-), it also shows these numbers on bar chart & pie chart - i'm proud of it! :D , its written in Python also - would love to know what other things would you guys add to it? any ideas? id really appreciate it :-) cheers! <337

I just received two katanas as a present and I have absolutely no use for them. I was thinking I could make a cool robotics project with them, does anyone have any ideas?8
-
First day at my internship. Was told by my mentor to search and play mobile games to get some ideas for the project. I'm working in a company that doesn't develop video games and now I fear that other workers will judge me for playing during working hours.2

Stupid project ideas pitched at me?
Well, basically everything my friends ever mentioned.
NO I don't wanna help you do shady things... and as soon as someone drops the word hacking I route the whole conversation to my inner /dev/null2 -
Exercise app got it all planned out in my head (well sort of). All day at work I'll be getting ideas on how id make it.
Day ends and I feel motivated to work on it all the way home. Get in make a cup of tea boot pc create a project do initial commit to git.
And nothing. Motivation dead ability to think gone. So I'll sit there sipping my tea trying to get motivated.
Eventually I'll close it down and get motivation to start it again at 4am which isn't an ideal time to start a project. -
So guys I have a project to do at school. I have to do a website using only HTML a basic one. Can u guys help me with some website ideas. Very much appreciated4

Two glasses after dry January and I feel like a sloth..

And I have weed cravings. haven’t smoked in like 12 years. what the fuck...3 -
I am teaching my brother about web development. He has never programmed before, doesn't know html and css and is struggling a bit. I think?
I went through basic control flows with him tonight and got him on the fizzbuzz problem just to see what would happen. An hour later I did it for him and explained it as I went.
I need an idea to get him started on. Some project that might actually be interesting or useful. Any ideas?1 -
As a newbie dev, I'm looking for partners to work together. You know I feel like unmotivated right now for some unknown reasons. So I thought of changing the pace by meeting with some new people who feel the same. By working on some not-real-world-project or silly ideas together, we can learn how to work in collaboration. We can also share some new ideas together!1
-
Oh man, I have so many ideas and "projects" that I've spent a day at most on. There's the "build a PC in a NES"-project, the "Hearthstone collector's site"-project, the "online crossword puzzle"-project (my dad loves puzzles but goes through books like he reads them and most online are paid) but the one I'm currently most excited about is setting up a gaming community in my region with some friends :)
Thoughts on which ones I should drop or pick up again? -
new project != new wonderfull creative ideas but rather new project = lots of procrastination and over analyzing
-
I've been running on practically no sleep for the past 4 days, I think the most I got one night was 5 and half hours of sleep with my average being more like 2 hours. Luckily I have broken leg that makes it so I can't work so I don't have to worry about going in but I do have the problem where I'm working on a project to hopefully replace a 3rd party piece of crap we use and I'm dead tired every time I work on it. But I also get great ideas and solve problems faster, so I'm trying to figure out if I should sleep or if I should just stay awake and attempt to push through with little to no sleep.1
-
Currently I am at a small company and there is another developer bit senior than me. When he interferes in the project assigned to me and suggest his ideas (may not be the best always) I feel too much terrible coz I like to explore on my own and learn from that. Obviously I will be bit slower than others. This happens most of the time and now a days I feel very low and even the boss blindly prioritizes his ideas and that hurts !!2
-
i really dislike inheriting depricated projects😓.
really wanted to use angular 2 for current project but our hosting server is outdated and nodejs wont run on it.
realy wish we could update the server, but doing this would break 10 older sites we are being paid to host .
any ideas?15 -
I frequently run out of programming ideas. Could anyone tell me a fun project they have done.
I know Python 3, ruby and some C++3 -
Took the project for school for creating a personal Online judge just because I could make a polling web-app in Django.
Any ideas how to start?
It should start working from January, so any articles/blogs/tutorials are welcome.4 -
Hey everyone! So for my final year project, I have to make a firewall game to help people understand about firewalls. Any ideas on how I can start?4
-
So I got a couple of weeks free now until school starts again. Trying to think of a project that I can work until then but the more I think the less ideas I get. Any suggestions on how to get inspiration and get the idea juices flowing?6

I have so much trouble thinking of new project ideas. I want to build a project both in Rust and Go to see which I like more, but I can't think of anything. How do you guys do it?5

I am still in college and will be going for a job next year. I want to learn Java with all the best practices associated with it. What I would like to do is do a large enough project that would enable me to learn industry standards and use the best practices(effective java etc) in actual code.
So I would ask the devrant community to give some project ideas that would use these practices extensively. I don't know if I am making myself clear here, but any help would be appreciated.9 -
It goes back in college days were,I started developing on Visual Basic for a college project as it was the only option.
As the scope was limited to a standalone application,we we're not allowed to use network.
Building up on the that, the project was to be done in a group of two with SRS and other stuff needed to done.
With my partner having no knowledge about the code,I took my ideas and Incorporated it into my project such as system logs, session tracking, data records, barcode reader, export data in various formats and so on.
The project got large eventually and professor's were curious to see the development of my project.
The project got showcased as the best project by professors and that overall gained my popularity in college and got me a job offer which I rejected in the end -
Yay! We completed this project in 8 weeks.

SonarQube is obnoxious in it's moronic ideas that demonstrate lack of understanding of the languages it's analyzing.
In C# there exists a special kind of switch-case statement where the switch is on an object instance and the cases are types the instance could polymorphically be, along with a name to refer to that cast instance throughout the case. Pattern matching, basically.
SonarQube will bitch about short switch-case statements done in this way, saying if-else statements should be used instead. Which would absolutely be right if this was the basic switch-case statement.
This is a language with excellent OOP features. Why are your tests not aware of this?
I can't realistically ignore the pattern because that would also ignore actually cases where it's right. And ignoring the issue doesn't sit right with me. How does it look when a project ignores tons of issues instead of fixing them? -
Maybe someone can help me out here...
I'm doing a small robotics project, where I'm building a line following robot.
That in itself is fine, and it works, however, the robot also needs to navigate through a maze.
The thing is, I only have access to two sensors, 1 light sensor, and 1 color sensor, meaning that I can't detect junctions.
Does anyone have any advice or ideas on how I could approach this with my restricted sensor count?2 -
...when your project TODO list is growing exponentially and you just give up tracking new ideas/feature requests

For this week, there is this student from a high school who's joining my company to complete his job experience project for his school.
Since my company is on the cryptocurrency trading and programming side, I'm not sure what kind of task is suitable for him, and I'm afraid that some tasks might be too difficult for him.
He did mention he was interested in programming and he knows how to use HTML and CSS ( yes I know these aren't really programming languages ).
Any suggestions or ideas on what tasks to give him or teach him?6 -
Can you guys give me ideas of a side project to do? I finished my last one and I'm feeling hopeless to use the shit ton of things I learned I learn through my jobs5
-
# This isn't THAT bad, but since I never had any collab before this one, this is the worst so far
I'm in a web development school where we need to do a yearly project. At the beginning, we started with the idea of doing an online wallet that would handle crypto-currencied (#blockchains), and other currencies too.
On the paper that sounds good, but the dude decided to create a NodeJS server api, and let's be honest, this was a gas factory. I couldn't help him because he was too fast in his ideas, and the third member was a bit more useful because he was the one creating the mobile app, so all he needed was an url that the dude couln't manage to create.
After a few weeks he started over the project, then over again a few weeks later, before coming to us and saying it was too difficult. We said "yeah, I mean you're own your own since the beginning, no wonders!" "Uh do you guys care if we change the whole project to do something else? Like a CV library"
Went a moment where he tried to over sell some incredible (read "overly common") features that already existed 10 years ago on some famous websites (ie. Monster), and he then eventually told me that this idea came from his new job, and that they needed this library. So we would have to work for his company for free. Nice.
The third guy and me came with a new idea (image recognition with IA and stuff), and we saw the dude maybe 5 times the whole week while we're supposed to work together -
Why is it so damn difficult to come up with good project ideas that’s actually useful for other people?4
-
How do I come up with ideas for side projects to practice new frameworks and skills I pick up?
I keep learning new languages and tools, but have no "worthy" project to show for as proof.
How do I come up with cool project ideas? Any sources? Any outright examples for cool ideas I could take inspiration from?1 -
PM who botched the project now thinks the newly appointed project leader has some really crazy ideas...1

Does anyone know of any websites that have project ideas with requirements/user stories. I generally get side tracked if I sit down and just build something. There are a few full stack projects on freecodecamp with user stories which made me wonder if there are any other similar sites.2 -
"I think if you’re starting out early in the process by talking about your ideas for solutions, you’re already not listening. I think you need to enter into any design project with that zen learner’s mind of ‘I don’t know what I don’t know.’" - Kim Goodwin1

I'm looking for a web project to develop for the end of an IT course. I have a couple of ideas, but I thought that you guys would maybe share some hints on what you want to see developed. (Website, webapp, mobile app...)8

I really don't know how I feel about SystemD.
Their recent reveal of Systemd-Homed made me once again doubt the logic behind the project. I mean, yes, systemd is handy to work with at some occasions (SysVInit, for example, doesn't store information about when a certain service failed), but SystemD is slowly eating up more and more of the system's jobs, and I'm a little worried, what would happen if SystemD suddenly went bust.
That will never happen, I know, but... Wasn't the idea behind Unix... Its modularity? That its made up of clearly defined parts that cooperate with each other, rather than a huge, monolithic projects that handle several functions at once?
This is not meant to be a hate post about Systemd, just a little... reminiscence about its goal and role in the Linux community.
Any ideas are appreciated! Discussions are welcome. Just... keep it civil. Please.3 -
Theres a kid competicion on infocmatics, I will take part of. I have built a compiler, and wanted to have an eye catcher for my project-presentationstable. Any good Ideas? IT schould be understandable by non-tech people3

Hey guys is there anything we as devs could do regarding this covid-19 situation in terms of our technical skills? Like any project or something for making awareness at global or local level, or some status update regarding various things/items that are affected by this pandemic?
I am looking for ideas or currently ongoing projects that i could contribute to. Currently my tech stack is limited to java, python , android and a little bit of basic data analysis, but i am fluid enough to learn and contribute.7 -
Help!
I really wanna increase my c++ skills, but I'm a learning-by-doing person. I start new projects all the time but they're too lame to finish them..
Do you have any ideas for some medium-size projects, which could actually be useful for personal use?
Useless projects are also okay, but then they have to be fun to implement..1 -
Complain about your build systems/pipelines here please! I want to hear about it.

I'm finally ready to publicly say I've been designing a build system. It's a culmination of around a decade of studying, thought, ideas and prototypes.
If you have any sort of build step in your project (any language, any compiler) that is unusual, custom, weird, or has a lot of requirements, extensive, etc. - anything even slightly outside the box - please let me know about it below. I want to know as much as possible about it.
Any strong opinions, hateful comments, gripes or annoyances, etc. please don't hesitate. I'd love to hear what issues you face with build systems. I want to make sure such cases are covered.
I'll also answer any questions for the curious.6 -
FFS THIS SHIT ALWAYS HAPPENS
i got a cool idea i wanted to start working on with some friends maybe open source project ... (i like to think my ideas are cool ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ) i do some research reading and i find something close or the exact same shit i was thinking about already in Kickstarter 😒😒😒😒4 -

If you're into compilers AND AI, check out Glow Compiler.
https://arxiv.org/pdf/...
Explains the idea well, casual read, almost no math just clean code examples and lots of easy reading explaining the ideas and theory behind it.
You can find the project at https://github.com/pytorch/glow and and also https://ai.facebook.com/tools/glow/1 -
Hello world!!
What do u think about electronics technician android app as a graduation project ?!:D
It could be for a specific company and the customer can write his device problem, the admin can accept his situation and the customer will take his device for maintenance
Also, it could be for buying and exchanging used devices . . .
Could you help me with your AMAZING IDEAS to the project ?!2 -
Ok, so I have 47 60 minutes mini DV tapes that don't want to go to waste, does somebody have an idea for a project that I could use these tapes for?
EDIT: they are all in individual boxes, most of them are Sony, but some are Panasonic11 -
well after solving many challenges and etc on ruby I decided today to actually use it. for real. and in my little playing it maybe become my new language, replacing python. Ruby is just great. but I don't have anything to make. I need ideas guys. or programmer friends! who wants to make something in ruby?1

Hey devs, I'm doing a final year project for a company where I have to implement a solution using web assembly.
Now this can be anything at all from a new operating system to a virtual machine. Although I have something in mind I thought I'd ask the community too, do you guys have any interesting project ideas that can be implemented using web assembly? -
I have a class on my college on which we can choose what to do as a final project the only requisite being that we need to do something we haven't covered in any class at the degree.
I want to be a Gameplay programmer and saw that many offers ask for Lua, then I think this is an opportunity to do something in Lua and learn the basics but I don't know what to do, any ideas of a simple project I can do in Lua or a framework that uses Lua that can teach me the basics of it?
Tl;Dr: Want to do a small project in Lua, have no idea what to do tho. Ideas?4 -
There’s somewhat of a magical moment when you teach the interns how to turn their huge switch statement into a function Pinter branch table....
Eliminating shotgun surgery as the project advances and new features are added to a module.
Colleges definitely don’t teach students certain things... and when I end up teaching them... the excitement and ideas they come up with are always great.. and they always end up with a stronger understanding of things.
(Embedded company .. all software here is C or C++) yes we use the optimizer.... sometimes you gotta do seemingly complex things to improve readability and maintainability. -
Anyone have ideas for an independent study cs project? I'd like to do something advanced(I have a full semester to complete it). I'm pretty interested in anything dealing with ML or networking. Comment if you have any suggestions. Thanks!3

I need to actually build up my website since all that's there is a digital resume currently
I have too many ideas for what I want like a simple blogging space, project showcase space, my teacher recommend a lanking page, and a better digital resume. but limited free time to figure out where to start and what to use and that's really demotivating
I'm thinking about using node or vue to learn a framework but again I'd have to learn them since all I know is normal unmodified js. And again where the hell do I start4 -
got a client who wants me to "stream pdf files instead of serving them so users cant download or print them".
as far as I know this is impossible. but he replied we dont care if an IT guy figured out a way to get it but we want majority of normal people to be unable to figure a way around it.
if im gonna need to show ms word and pdf files i will need an iframe or object embed and i cant disable right clicks or listen on ctrl s / p.
any ideas or should i not go for the project :(12 -
Hey guys,
I have to Select my Bachelor thesis/topic in the next few days. I would like to do something with Crypto Currencies especially with the Blockchain System. There is a wide range of usage for that and i Think it could be very interesting.
The Problem is that am Not Really Sure what Topic or challenge my Project could contain. There is much to say about it but i dont Think it would be enough to just describe it.
There should be a Problem or anything like that I can solve..
Or Is it possible to just Analyse the blockchain and the affect it have These Days and the Future?
I would appreciate a few ideas or suggestions :)
Regards

I want to expand my skills in swift, and want to build a project to do so. Any ideas/challenges for what I can build?1

Working on a project for myself and to put in my portfolio. Talking about it with a (non coding) co-worker and discussing where I am in the project as I've been really excited about my progress since I'm working from scratches with no frameworks for the back-end(the only side I've worked on so far). I was talking about the registration page and getting ideas as to what I should let users put on their profiles and she chimes in, "This would actually be better as a mobile app. That would be much easier to use." Well yeah, probably, but I'm a web developer, not a mobile app developer. Plus making it a web app means users will be able to utilize it through any medium rather than just their mobile phone. I can (probably) make it responsive enough that users don't mind it being a web page rather than an app.
I'm still learning, I know PHP, Python and a little JavaScript, not really enough to build a mobile app. Yeah I'd love to make this an app, but then I gotta support multiple products across several hundred different devices in multiple languages and I'm just not ready for that. Let's get the back end finished and we can go from there.1 -
This article about the types of legacy code bases you will have to deal with just made my day!
Not only do I have every one it describes but somehow it even made me laugh at thought of each of the std riddled petri dishes of code that I reluctantly maintain... My "Happy Place" is a folder dedicated to reliquary projects I like to look at when I feel sad to lift my spirits and restore hope that one day things will be better.
Do you have any definitions to add or know where to find more? I'm hooked.

Excerpt:
The Reliquary
The reliquary is that one repository full of really good ideas. Clean code. Brilliant algorithms. The OpenID implementation that you optimised until it shone. Classes so beautifully designed and perfectly documented that they’d make a senior architect weep.
You remember the big rewrite? The project that was going to fix everything, only you never worked out how to actually launch the thing, or get any revenue from it? The reliquary is where you’ve preserved it, pickled in revision control like a fabulous museum specimen. A treasury of good code and good ideas; maybe even an entire codebase that was “a couple of weeks” away from shipping before somebody finally looked at the number of critical features the team had somehow forgotten to include and discovered — to everybody’s surprise — that validated XHTML, normalised data models and 95% test coverage are not actually features any of your end users cared about.
Like Buran or the Spruce Goose, the surviving artefacts stand as a testament to the quality of your engineering… and a poignant reminder of just how much fun engineers can have building high-quality stuff that nobody actually wants to use. -
How do you guys come up with ideas for side projects? I'm really motivated to start a project but i don't have an idea... It's been going like this for weeks4
-
Hey all! It's been awhile :-) I very much hope everyone is doing well & staying safe! Here in the Aus things are slowly starting to get better! I've been slowly chipping away at my project here below:
https://github.com/milosv1/...
I would love to know what you think of it! I've recently made it such that it runs in the background and the data it spits out is replaced every one hundred seconds :-) - Any feedback, however nice or even harsh is certainly appreciated :-)
Thank you for taking the time to read through my post! - hope everyone has a great end of week ahead!

Hate working in a team when one senior guy comes in with no idea about the project, but still has to share 'ideas and suggestions' irrelevant to the workflow. Such a busybody!1

*Sees an article with the headline 'The simple approach to building a real-time collaborative text editor'"
Before I can finish the thought that "I don't need this shit" a design idea pops up in my mind and I stop myself and say "Fuck", meaning another project for my imaginary projects list. Yay... I need help. I look at certain things and get ideas. Seriously becoming a problem. -
Hey guys,
I'm studying in college and just got introduced to Android development and firebase. It's wonderful. And I'm wondering for an app like devRant would it be a good idea to store the data in firebase... If not, what else options are there? Also, I'm planning to work on a similar project for my sophomore year.
Any ideas guys?2 -

Hi guys !
I start "studies" to become Web Developer and after 1 month and a half of studies, my teacher asks us to create our first project in groups of 3 or 4. Do you have any ideas of what kind of project we could build? I was thinking of an e-commerce site with our knowledge (HTML5, CS3, a bit of JavaScript, SQL, a little PHP ($ _SESSION, $ _POST and $ _GET) and CRUD).
Is it a good idea?9 -
new project != new wonderfull creative ideas but rather new project = lots of procrastination and over analyzing

I wanna talk about the obsession that precedes every new personal project.
I keep thinking about it, searching, getting new ideas and more features, pulling my hair, and laughing like a mad scientist. I think I might be crazy.1 -
I'm needing an idea for a new project. I began tinkering with one of my old C# projects and I'm just **disgusted** with the amount of crap in there.
What do you guys think, should I finish it or move on?
Any good ideas on how to find another idea for a new project?3 -
eh, i get pretty nice project ideas about twice a month and some lousy ones about once a week but i am such a shitty coder and designer that i simply gave up on that.
i wish there was such a job. -
I'm looking for a new side project.. I want to write in Python or React, haven't used those languages before but want to learn them by doing something more or less useful :D

[Q] I am working on a small pet project for quite some time now, a basic job searching app (main target IT & fellow devs).
I was wondering if any of you guys have any suggestions, problems to fix that are present in platforms which you are/have been using, ideas?
What really grinds your gears when using other websites and what makes you use them?
P.S am not a recruiter, nor am I working for an agency.
*rating recruiters/companies will be there 100%*1 -
Oh, there are hundreds that I've started categorizing them. They outgrew the storage capacity of my head / brain. I've tried a lot of productivity tools to organize them, but in the end, all my project ideas just remain ideas scattered somewhere unless I see it action and go like, "Hey, I had that same idea. I wonder when they got the idea. Was it before or after I had it?" In the end, I just console myself saying that for me it was only an idea in my head when those people saw it through execution and has a working product. The next step for me is to get along with them and collaborate and make that idea better rather than re-invent the same wheel again according to my idea.
Nextcloud is the biggest example of an idea that came to me and remained in my head and is still on a todo list somewhere. -
Soon launching a social networking app just for devs. Post Dev memes, Collab, rant, brainstorm over ideas, reach out to anyone for chat, post your cool devspace pictures and earn rewards. Stay tuned!
Ps- I know there are many similar platforms, this is just a project I developed learning coding app development so just don't brag me about the concept. Although, a better UI/UX never hurts!
The project is fully coded by me and am open for Sr. Devs collabs for the project.16 -
Hey devs! I want to ask you guys if there is someone that want to start something new! Im up to ideas :D
-
In few months I went from working independently on a project while developing lots of vertical knowledge to being body rented to another company where I spend most of my time doing calls and continuously reworking a suite of over engineered micro services (after ages instead of progressing we’re rewriting for the nth time basic CRUD because the team keeps coming with new refactoring ideas and since budget/time limit aren’t tight nobody on the high management seems to care of the time we’re wasting). I miss being able to stay “in the zone” for hours without calls, being challenged and learning on the job so I’m considering to find another job.
-
Still working on this oldass project. Casting enums to different enums.. longass methods call another longass methods at the end...

What had to be a nice day:
So last week a friend asked me if I wanted to come.
Some days (2) later I said ok and asked him what time.
I’m also doing a project with him (he isn’t a dev), so I thought I add new features and show him the ideas.
Yesterday he wrote a message: “My family is coming, Sorry, I need to cancel”
I’m so angry. I worked long on these features to make him happy, and show ideas. And then when nearly everything is done he cancels.
I don’t know what so tell him/do. What would you do?3 -
"Most successful private project" would be an extension of the webeditor Brackets named brackets-swatcher.
The silly thing about this is that it started out from my own frustration with variablenames in variablefiles in Foundation and Bootstrap.
After a collegue of mine also used it he had a shitton of ideas how to improve and what he wants so i developed it on many weekends with many many beers in my belly.
Where we come to the conclusion - its for sure the ugliest project ive ever written (=> beer and jquery) and i hope i never have to touch the code again - but on the other side i never had bug reports despite the fact that alot of big websites had it in their "Top 10 Brackets Extensions" and many downloads from the Brackets Marketplace.2 -
I am in final year in computer science and i have to do a license. I know for sure it will be something about networking( not programming)(I am junior sysadmin in a company, i told you that so you can make an idea about the field). I did not find any great idea until now. Can you help me with some ideas? Thank you.
-
I just thought of a potential webapp ideas while talking a shower. Still need to give it some thought but wondering how best to built it out? Sorta like a message board/kiva/change.org
I'm thinking #1 is backend + REST api. Then just create a webapp using React Native so it can be used mobile and browser?
Probably will build the first prototype though using either C# just to test the APIs...
But I guess how do you break a project up. Do you build backend first or do it feature by feature (both backend and frontend)?
And well what about hosting? Do need to decide now like AWS/Heroku... Or can I just build on local? Need a db though...1 -
I just want to rant about my teacher who did not teach us on software engineering principles especially on version control and how we handle our code.
[This is Tl;dr section so I won't take your time to read] I just want your advice or opinions on students required to learn version control.
Now that there are many freshmen in our school, I want to teach them the very basics on version control. Our flaws as a group, when we are in developing our project is, there's only 1 person who handles all of the code and that's not very effective, the others were busy on the documentation and project management but not the code that the person wrote. I can relate to that person but I'm actually doing other task and review it. My group mates didn't review my code because it was written in Ecma Script(I refer to them as javascript). I put comments on every functions, conditions, and variables so that they could understand, but they don't.
So If you have any ideas please reply. I will read them and evaluate. -
If i'm trying to build an example server for a class to demonstrate my grade project (i'm researching hacking, ethical and unethical) and I know basically nothing which is still more than any teachers I talk to on a daily basis (tech manager said I can talk to him with specific questions)
I'm trying to set up and IIS7 server on a spare computer and I'm trying to get Apache to work as well just to learn more but I have no real clue where to start at all
can I get some advice on where to start and maybe some more ideas on how to expand my own
I don't know where else to ask about this since StackOverflow is more for specific questions and I don't know any other sites or apps
please help me4 -
can someone help giving ideas to this fucking project of my school, I need to make a website in asp.net a c# desktop client, an android app and somehow a hardware needs to be involved, pls help I'm freaking out here, hate this school 😠8

I'm looking project for 6h Hackathon. We use Atlassian in our company, bitbucket and slack. Do you have some ideas? I'm thinking about desktop application in Vue + Electron to help logging time in Jira

This year I and two friends joined modelling competition for uni students called SCUDEM. We are modelling refugee settlements and the crime rate in Uganda. I try to lead the group as the previous year and we changed one team member. The model is written in Julia and it is 2k of working lines after week, we work on it in our spare time.
However, one friend who hasn’t done any bigger project in the past or wasn’t programming for money disagree with the workflow. He prefers doing some small models separately. He doesn’t write clear code and it is difficult to read it afterwards. His ideas are good, but he likes more to talk about the problems than straight code them down in the way that we can use it in the bigger structure.
Do you any ideas on how to motivate him to take part in the collective workflow? I feel that working separately is rather contra-productive.2 -
Need some ideas to write a large program....and a starting point to build this project, in new to programming and having really worked on a large project. The language I use the most is Java, but I know SQL also
-
So I have a few projects that I've been planning out for a while. Looking to start one over Christmas, build it up and launch early-ish next year.
I would say I'm well versed in RoR. Not great at explaining things but in terms of writing code I got that. Just not that great of a speaker haha more of a doer.
I also use JS a lot and some Node.
But I think I want to challenge myself at least for one of the projects. I've jumped around languages and frameworks alot job wise as I've had too. Never had the opportunity there to focus and hone in on the one language or stack. Which I do want to try and try and focus on a stack or language in 2020 to hone it in, focus on only a few things.
So I was thinking of using TypeScript and Vue with firebase. But that seems close to what I've been doing already. If I was to build the first project with RoR I can get a production ready app within a few days maybe even less because how easy it is to use and previous experience of course.
The first project is just a simple jobs board similar to we work remotely.
I've also heard good things about go and rust, asp.net. I'm open to all ideas. -
So, to keep a long story short, I am for the second time in my life the proud owner of a Macintosh Performa 6115CD in working order. The original Descent is just as fun as I remember it being—after taking a day to remember the best control configuration for keyboard.
I've got some ideas on how to get it online* so that I can transfer things to it.
Just for fun, however, I've been thinking it might be an interesting project to try and do some programming for it. I got my start on this setup, though not in Objective-C. Anyone happen to know of any free/abandonware coding setups for classic Mac? Running 7.5.3 at the moment.

I am looking to develop an app to take advantage of the bluetooth technology in fitness bracelets. I have a few ideas but no starting point. I can code though 😅 but I'd like to know what concepts I need to know, what open source fitness app code I could look at or anything I need to be aware of before I begin my ambitious (life changing) project. I plan on using an oraimo tempo C smart bracelet for my project. Any advice, comments and discouragement will be highly appreciated 😊

I know it doesn't really exist in one solution, but I need management software to keep track of customers (crm), projects, products, licensing and contracts, and time keeping. Right now we are using MSCRM (ugh), and old homebrew project/time tracker written in Perl spaghetti (double ugh), email (sigh) and handwritten notes (kill me). Now I suddenly find myself with a budget (somewhat) and the authority to actually fix things. Any ideas would be appreciated.
