his colleagues hate him because thy still live in 2001 and they use SVN. But it was {good}

on the fifth day, he said " LET THERE BE FRONTEND", and the frontend was born, but his colleagues again, ranted for using Angular instead of React. It's still "good";
And on the sixth day, he said "LET IT BE SOLD TO A CUSTOMER" and it was, but the bloke was a cheapskate wanker and paid him only the half of the contract price. But it was still good.
And on the seventh day, he rested, but he didn't actually, because Developers never rest nor sleep. And it was good3 -
A guy who doesn't work on our project anymore, but still checks on us regularly just did this:
- reported a bug
- started explaining what's causing the issue
- realised the problem was in a piece of code written by him before
- fixed his own mistake, committed it and created a pull request
We all had a good laugh.6 -

Dear diary, today was a good day.
A small part of my faith in humanity was recovered after I found about Tibor Kaputa.
Apparently, this guy - like many of us - was fed up with the bloat, bugs, bullshit and 'features' of many of the stock Android apps that come preinstalled on most phones. And so, he decided to make his own.
Unlike most of us however, he actually pulled through. And then he made them open source.
No bullshit permission requirements.
No ads or tracking.
Custom themes.
And no, not just 'toggle white/dark mode', I'm talking 'pick your own color scheme', both within the app and for the app icon (!).
And then sync your colour scheme across the entire suite of apps (!!).
Simple UI, with a lot of customizable settings.
And if you get them from f-droid, it's all completely free as in BEER too!
I've spent a lot of time in the last year trying to find software that does what it's supposed to do well, without trying to pull any sneaky bullshit in the background or annoy me with crap that I don't care about in a miserable attempt to show off its useless features.
I'm not a fan of Medium myself either, but the author's article about how his suite of apps was born really resonated with me. If you care about privacy, open source software, and doing things right, you should really give it a read: https://medium.com/@tibbi/...
I'm particularly a fan of the Gallery, the File Manager, and the Music player apps, and the others don't look half bad either.11 -

So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...

After 2 years of working as a Linux admin, and over 6 years of using Linux as my only OS, I left my job, installed Windows and started a new, better paying and more perspective carrier as a .Net developer ... It's been 6 months, and I still miss the terminal ... I've been trying to get over it by using Babun and the Linux subsystem for Windows ... The thing is ... even though they are great, they are not as good as native stuff and the knowledge that it's not the real deal still haunts me :(
TL;DR: Left Linux 6 months ago ... still miss it to this day ... doubt I will ever get over it :( Feels bad guys

Bad news: Company shutting down, gave one day notice and was told not to come in for work the next day. Was compensated, of course. But still, it sucks.

Url shortener seems to be working well enough as for the features without interface yet, still doing testing but it's looking good (few minor non-critical bugs but that's it as far as I can see)

But you don't know if he is still behind you, and you're not brave enough to look back, so you write good code for the rest of the lesson.

I just found two very old netbooks which still contain windows xp (I didn't even know I still had them at all) and I'm obviously going to turn them into Linux netbooks.
Does anyone know any good looking linux distro's that run well on low-end hardware? This is not my specialty since I either deal with servers or higher-end computers :).

So our IT-department decided it was a good idea to block all outgoing ports at my school. Resulted in no internet for a day. Then they fixed that and the mail part but I still can't connect to any of my servers with SSH :/14

Fuck web dev.
I dabbled in many areas but I do web dev most often. And seriously: fuck web dev. Your site has to work on multiple browsers. Multiple screen resolutions. The code has to be tiny for load time. The images have to work for every resolution and still be small. The styling can look different in different browsers. So many useful javascript features are only supported by modern browsers. An on top of that: IE.
I’ve gotten quite good at all of this, but still: it’s such a fucking pain.10 -

He got me through some tough and grueling times. I still use his tunes while coding. I'm still shocked that he left so early. But he made it count. He might've lived short but he lived large.
I'll miss him. I'm sad that he left so early. But his work will live on. I hope to become as good at programming computers as he was at using them to make music. His music was perfection. RIP.11 -

So I got a couple of C.H.I.P. single-board computers a good while back because Raspberry Pi Zero was always out of stock.
I named them pringles, the smooth and synthetic one with a GUI, and ruffles, the sturdier and rugged one with a headless OS.

So far so good, he's really happy with the Linux (surprisingly). The Witcher 3, Payday 2, Minecraft run flawlessly, although I had to make some small configurations in disk mounting, because of the fact that the games disk is still in NTFS file system4 -

Made from a 2007 template.
The database was in latin1.
The template wasn't even a good one, an adapted hotel booking example for a main page, contact, and news.
There were unused variables and weird functions everywhere.
3 years later and I still don't understand how it managed images. Not that I care to look back. -

I have been playing skyrim on my switch. The reason is simple, family watches movies or whatever, and I get to sit comfortably in my little screen shooting mofockas with my bow(i made an archer build)
Its my first time playing the game after all these years and I love it, far better than I expected. The story is great and the side quests are fun instead of boring, it does not take much to learn how to craft, enchant etc and I dig the simplicity.
But it has got to be one of the buggiest glitchiest majorly famous game I had ever played. Literally, and I have it for both the ps4 and the switch and it still is so fucking buggy its unbelievable.5 -

I mean.. How did we even survive til this day w/o google making restaurant reservation or barbershop calls..? We are cavemen bcz we still do it all ourselves... So inefficient..

Made caffeine consumption personal record today. 11 cups of coffee (11*250ml = 2750ml). In each 250ml there's around 100mg of caffeine. 1100mg of caffeine in one day. Huh. Not bad. Yes, I am still alive and I feel so good.20

I finalized buying ~1000 square feet ( ~95 square meters ) apartment. Still renting 100 square feet room ( ~10 m2 ) so change will be tremendous. It’s first property I will own. With that amount of free space I think I can start constructing small spaceship or time travel machine.

Phone is still ringing. Time to turn it off for a while and rethink my life and world around from scratch.

It is sad to say, but programming in C# using Visual Studio basically consists of clicking buttons, dragging and dropping files and checking / unchecking checkboxes in order to get everything generated.

why is everyone hating on python lately?
I know it's not perfect, and it takes care of a lot of shit for you. and it's slow, and doesn't have a decent compiler, and PEP 8 encroaches on everything good in the world, and mandatory whitespace, etc.
yea. it's got some issues. but it's still a good language imo. and it's easy to write, it's fun to write, it looks nice (not Ruby level nice but ehh). not worthy of all the "fuck python!" talk.21 -
Just saved a co-worker by having an installer from 8 months ago in a folder called "desktop", 4 levels deep in folders called "desktop", all on my desktop. My hoarding habits finally saved the day!!!2

I get tasks done mostly on time, my pull requests are merged, yet I still feel like what I'm writing is seriously under quality.

No catastrophe today (so far). Managed to clear some space on the servers, and the backup ran correctly overnight.

All Russian luxury brands are scam. And I mean ALL of them. No matter if it says "made in England" or "made in France" on the package, it's still a scam if it's Russian deep inside. It's just the regular shit repacked and sold at 20x the price.
Here's the algo:
1. You lookup the brand name that claims to be luxury
2. If it has something to do with Russia (Russian executives, etc) — it's a scam.
This doesn't cover the regular, non-luxury brands. AK is still a good weapon, KMS is still a good windows 10 crack :)11 -

Compliments are weird.
I love receiving good reviews on my software.
(negative but constructive feedback is welcome as well, of course)
But receiving compliments, especially in person is really weird.
On the one hand I know that I did a good job, I know that the features are useful and the UI is classy and comfortable. On the other hand I still feel not comfortable receiving compliments for doing something good.
I don't have any social awkwardness and yet this feels so weird.

One of the colleagues I am close with is changing teams. They will still be around the company, in fact the office of the team they are going to is right by mine. It just sucks to lose a good developer and friend from the team.

Still after so many years on this project I alwaaaaays go debug/recheck what I coded first before checking the old code and data...usually turns out it's something long before me that's still fucked up & buggy, but still.. During my last University year, a big IT Corp made a national contest for students with some 3 phases and some prized at the end. I ended 14 over 2000 participants and they called me for an internship which eventually turned up to a good job contract. Still working with them now.

Some of the worst code reviews I had were at my 1st proper workplace which incidentally was the strictest one! I was such a lazy oaf and hated those.
Still don't like code reviews but I do admit those first ones did me a tom of good.

Lenovo T series laptops are amazing. I've purchased one in 2010, it was too good to be true and used for 5-6 years, forgot about it after I upgraded to Mac. Didn't touch for ~2.5 years, turned on today for my nephew. It is still working like charm, even the battery holds charge for 2hours, I'm impressed 👍12

My first job was at an e-learning firm, and I was a part of the team that made the digital content.
The team had a really good spirit. Often too good, as our team manager often gave up on us and left our weekly status meetings because we were all just joking and having a good time.
Still, we usually did an OK job and delivered on time.
Those were good times. Now I'm just a single dev without a team in a pretty large company. Luckily, I'm away on paternity leave atm.2 -

Maaaan, we all knew it was coming, we were warned, again and again, yet still, when Lets Encrypt's old root CA expired today, we found out a tool we were using to get new certs (Not cerbot, custom wrapper around acme-tiny) included the old root in the chain.
So... A few hours ago, some of our servers started having connection issues.
Great final 3 hours of today. Better luck next time I guess? Still, despite the little hickup, Lets Encrypt still remains as one of the biggest revolutions in the adoption of SSL, they're the good guys.5 -

Pixel perfect layout bugfixing doesn't even feel like development, it only proves that some people got their priorities terribly wrong if they worry about a 2 pixel margin anywhere. And I do say this as a front end dev who does respect a respect a good design. But still, pixel pushing sucks!7

Submitted my first pull request for an OS project
They labelled it as a good first issue and i had to spend 3 hours to stupidly search for index.html and realised they used something called apidoc.

This morning, I decided I'm gonna do some Android development. I opened Android Studio (closing 2 Firefox windows to reclaim enough RAM), launched the Android Emulator and then proceeded with my coding.
Since, I've almost finished a prototype app, translated a good 100 strings, had lunch, updated 2 server and THE EMULATOR IS STILL BOOTING!
My Android dev friend tells me this "just happens sometimes". WHAT?!?

When I will be ready to be transitioned to a promoted developer.
I have been with a company for 2.5 years and nit much development from it. As the review processes are nothing and we are all doing whatever we could and deploying everything to prod.
Now I have changed my company and been a level 1 developer. It's still an entry level role.
I am working towards my promotion but still the as a growth team I am not getting enough chances to work on something good. My design skills are still not good.
What should I do? I have been in this role for a year now. If I want to transition any other company will offer me a level 2 developer role. Should I go into applying for jobs for level 2 when I know that I am not enough? I am afraid that of I waited in my current company I will be stuck for 2 more years here. -

Here's a good question. What is the worst tool you've tried that was recommended to you? Could be a text editor, IDE, STACK setup, etc.
For me that tool was Eclipse with JavaEE. Not Spring/Hibernate or Maven, but specifically JavaEE in Eclipse. I probably lost over 2 1/2hours configuring that beast to work and it would still break every half hour or so. Drove me crazy enough to switch to IntelliJ. It's one of the rare cases where a free application just wasn't as good as a paid for application. :/10 -
I literally was fucking around in Python thinking I was doing some good, learned basics, kept switching languages, read about two books that did teach me a lot of stuff, stopped jumping between languages, still reading books, still learning, internet, exercises, books... YouTube had like 8% of participation in my learning process (Which is still going)

Why can't developers get dark themes right, or at least let me stylize it the way I want it? If you are only changing the background, black is *never* a good choice because it contrasts too much with the other default (and still bright) colors. Dark gray works much better.2

Just finished a little proof of concept of a reprojected multisample antialiasing technique and daaaaamn it's looking good. First time ever a rendering technique I invented isn't complete shit so that's an improvement
It still has some (pretty big) issues with both spatial and temporal ghosting but I have some ideas in the pipeline
I wish I could show you guys comparison images but as it turns out most anti aliasing techniques look pretty good on still frames but only the good ones stand up under motion and I don't know of a good way right now to capture pixel perfect clips like that5 -

Does anybody here still use dreamweaver? I used to use it a lot back in the day when I started as a designer, but haven't used it in years, but I noticed the app in our companies adobe subscription plan and have installed it.

How to get good at solving problems.
My managers says that I should consider scalability, dev efforts, Operational costs etc. I am really new in this, I really need to figure out a lot of things by understanding architecture and then there are added quality parameters of the solution, where can I read all this? How to get good at this? I know one of the solution is to actually work on it, can I still get some other resources to understand things better?1 -
Best way to learn C? Might be my ADHD brain,but I'd love to try learning C again. I know K&R is still pretty good,but what are some other books,or good ways to learn C? I'll be using a standard Linux system with gcc so nothing really special. Also Correct me if I'm wrong,but GCC supports later C standards C99,etc except for floating points right?3

Do we still need virtualenv when we have containers? Cuz one of my friends thinks it’s a good idea to use virtualenv everywhere, even in production, even in an LXC?

Don’t be afraid to try new things & don’t wait to have a “good useful idea” or to create “something new”. You have no ideas? Create something you need! You still can’t figure out what to create? Just go for a standard project (e.g: movie list)!

Sooo. That starts to be a bit annoying:
I'm working on a large refactoring with a pretty good inheritance / generic system. And some code generators.
Rghjt now I'm doing a script which generate code files, which will generate code-gen templates which will generate final files.
It's funny and it's a one shot generation, but still. So much abstraction.
(End result is good tho. Everything in small files less than 15 lignes of code. Everything structured.) -
