WHY THE FUCK IS IT SO FUCKING HARD FOR THESE CUM SUCKERS TO UNDERSTAND THAT CHANGING REQUIREMENTS 2 DAYS BEFORE THE DEADLINE IS JUST GONNA BREAK EVERYTHING!?!?
I DOUBLE DARE ANYONE TO TELL ME ITS NOT WORKING TOMORROW...

How do I know my office is pretty chill?
My lead dev just sent me a text with:
"U suck penis"
I said "wow, uncalled for"
And then he said:
"U r uncalled for"
Well alrighty then18 -
So. A while ago I was on OkCupid, trying to find the Pierre to my Marie Curie (without the whole brain getting crushed under a horse carriage wheel obviously) and I decided the best way was to have my profile lead with my passion for technology. It turned out pretty unique, if I do say so myself.
At the end of it, I amassed some interesting and unique messages:
- A Java pickup line (that I never responded to. Yes I'm a very basic Devranter)
- A request to turn the man's software into hardware (to which I politely informed him that this was scientifically impossible unless a reader proves me wrong)
- Another impossible request to turn his floppy disk into a hard drive (how outdated too, why not HDD to SSD for faster speed amirite? That was awful don't mind me)
- A sincere request to help troubleshoot a laptop (Honestly I would've helped with help requests but this is a dating site...)
- A sincere request to help debug a student project followed with a link to a GitHub repo
- Another sincere request with studying for a computer exam
- And lastly, my favourite: a sincere job offer by a guy who went from flirtatious to desperate for a programmer in a minute. He was looking for *insert python, big data, buzzwords here* and asked me for a LinkedIn. I proceeded to inquire exactly what he wanted me to do. He then asks me to WRITE a Python tutorial and that he would pay a few cents per word written so he could publish it. Literally no programming involved.
Needless to say I went to look elsewhere.26 -
So we where given a project with a deadline already set behind our backs and we have to give our deadline despite not knowing wtf we have to do exactly ...
They asked us to don't ask too much time because the budget can't afford too much time...
I'm here thinking: WTF?!
THEY PASSED A FUCKING DEADLINE AND PRICES TO THE FUCKING CLIENT WITHOUT ASKING ANY! ANY MOTHERFUCKING DEV ABOUT IT!!!
We asked them so many fucking questions on the first meeting that they were fucking baffled about everything but kept playing cool like "well, this project is already set and we are gonna have to deal with it"
Bunch of motherfucking stupid cock suckers , go die agonizing on your own vomit and if ask my help I'm gonna answer "well, you gonna have to deal with it because you are already fucked"2 -
You all, something is wrong. No one has pissed me off at work recently (other than boss, but he does that by existing). I'm not sure if they've all learned, or if shit is about to hit the fan.10

God damn it, i said so many times that this functionality is proof of concept and needs more investigation into technical/legal details...why the flugzeug mr account manager have you gone and emailed all your client accounts telling them we are now offering it?... why are you messaging me starting your sentence with "now that we provide..." god...damn...it4

Ever have a feeling that there is so many interesting stuff out there - Angular, React.js, TypeScript, Rust, ELM, FRP, Machine Learning, Neuronal Networks, Robotics, Category theory... But no way to ever figure out what are all those about? And there is too little time to even get a good grasp of any single one of those. IT seems to be like hydra - one learns one thing and 10 new concepts pop up in the meantime.4

Fuck public transportation. Seriously. It's usually disgusting, too hot, too cold, to expensive and not customer Friendly.7

am I only one who thinks that ≥6GB RAM for phones is just too much as most of the time the unused RAM gets wasted for no goddamn reason but the only one being that the companies want their product(s) to look more compelling in `spec sheets` and it's a competitive market so it ok for them to do so...24

So this is a comparison of mobile contract prices in Europe which include 50 GB per month. I think I don‘t want to live in Germany anymore 😓

Customer: The pages x and y are not displayed in the menu of my website.
Me: I've added another menu level. This level wasn't planned. Your pages will now be displayed.
Customer: Do you think I have too much menu levels?
Me (what I want to say): YES. You have too much of EVERYTHING! Too much menu levels, too much useless pages, too much bad formatting, too much different font colors in one fucking sentence! Your website is crap at all.
Me (what I said): No, it's okay.
I hate customers.2 -
Ask for help, it's not a sign of weakness. I've missed way too many deadlines because I've been too prideful or overly
ambitious. -
5" phones are too big.
15" laptops are too big.

My computing teacher says that html is his favourite programming language to teach.
He calls JavaScript Java
Needless to say he's not very good at teaching us html and js.6 -
Yeah boss, lets study Scrum extensively so you can:
- Create variable length sprints
- User stories that are meaningless like 'fixes'
- Tasks that should be User Stories
- Duplicated tasks/stories that are on the fucking backlog already
- Cross sprints on projects
- No meetings at fucking all to determine who will do what
- Assign people on vacation to current sprints
The list goes on...
An when I point things like that out lets just look at the guy who spent 6 months studying this shit, taught you ( at least tried... ) as if he is saying nonsense while our projects get delayed and our code spaghettifies because we are always in a hurry for lack of time to plan anything :)2 -
Just started a Coursera Machine Learning course. Suddenly I feel like a 20 years old guy going at university. Better than feeling like a 44 years old adult working on shitty things like every day...7

My manager wonders why I don't respond to people in a timely fashion.
I'm watching 83 Slack channels and private messages, I get 45 emails an hour, I'm on-call, and I have 125 servers to monitor.
Number of Jira tickets I received in the last 3 days? One single fucking ticket.
Open a damn ticket and I'll shove you to the bottom of the backlog, just like everybody else... I mean, I'll be able to track your request and not loose it.7 -

Fuck IEEE for making shit harder. Fuck their stupid submission system. 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Gosh, where went my social life? XD
That's already more than a month that I moved to Nice. I'm working a bit too much I guess. You know, I'm the kind of guy who is gonna rebuild the entire software architecture on his free time because it's crap x)

Lately, in the company I work for, it's becoming the norm for the dev to finish workdays at 10pm or 11pm, but we still get yelled at when we arrive after 9am. Anyway, every week, the PMs and salesmen have a big meeting to debrief how everything is working so well in this so wonderful company, and whatever. From what I've been told, it's just a big session of self-satisfaction, applause, and gossips.
During the two or three last meetings, some PMs dared to point out that the dev felt underestimated and constantly under pressure. Last time, the boss of the managers answered: "Developers just like to complain."
Yeah, right! We work like hell everyday to respect deadlines of underestimated projects, we have to fight to get hardware, and even a good chair is a precious resource!
Ultimately, another PM trainee said projects were late because dev are just laughing all day long... Go figure!
I feel like most of IT companies treat dev like inferior robots :(5 -
Surprisingly frequently in my city, a few weeks ago for example I was in the pub discussing reactjs with a friend of mine from uni and a random bloke cut in with "there was nothing wrong with jquery" (he had a massive grin on his face, so he knew what he said). Spent the rest of the night talking with him and his son who were both consultant developers.
Fun night 🤣 -
I actually like light themes. Especially on bright days, they're a life saver, but... what the fuck.

Fuck UI animations!

Google.
They’re doing amazing things but they are just too big now... Too much of a monopoly and the data is scary too.3 -
Today I got corrected in the difference between to and too. Another dev told me I made a typo in the documentation where I tripple checked. Then he told me that "too"means "also" and is also used in things like "too much". In high school I got told by my teacher it was "to much".
I've been using the word "to" wrong for fourteen years now...8 -
So I was just watching a show with subs and see this line:
"So just try and catch me!"
The first thought that came to mind was:
try {}
catch {}6 -
I feel like I need to morph into an octopus to keep efficiently doing my work.
Too few hands, too few brains...
And I just can't fucking focus on 5 things fucking simultaneously...
I was coding.
-> Customer calls
-> New ticket with higher priority
-> I get back to coding
-> Boss calls, do ticket first
(Rinse and repeat)
I don't even know if I'm able to at least get a raise as a trainee, but our company only has two (2) developers right now, including me... And since our senior left, we do a fuckton more work.
I do way more than other trainees in my class and compared to some other colleagues, seriously.
In any case, we got reviews and feedback rounds with our bosses next week, and I wrote a DIN A4 page of reasons why I want to get at least a small raise.
Not gonna read it off, of course, but gonna go along it...
Wish me luck.5 -

FREE .design domains! 😁
Porkbun is giving away one free .design domain to each customer, after verifying it's legit I had to share - I got a 3 letter domain!
Link: https://goo.gl/Nwx8fW
I always have need for an extra domain or 2 and while .design is a bit long/specific it is quite new so there are lots of short names available (I registered jhb.design - jhb is my city). If you have a sense of humour there are plenty of wordplay options too ( buttugly.design, thatsanice.design).
On top of that they are offering $20 per referral for anyone who registers a .design name for free. This is so good it sounds like a scam so to test it I made the above link an affiliate link in the hope of free beer.
Let me know if you managed to register anything good!7 -

React devtools in Firefox is such a pile of shit! It's slow, it hangs when selecting and it doesn't fucking show the whole component tree when it's too deep. I'm forced to switch to Chrome when I need to debug.
Anyone here has problems with it too?4 -
I keep spreading myself too thin. I pick up too many projects and find myself not working as much as I want on my main projects. I've been getting better about realizing this, and I caught myself after less than a month. But shit. I need to stop it.

So I am currently making an app for a retail franchise and that retail franchise is getting a website done by a company. Since the recipes that the guys want are going to be on the website, the web dev company made a mysql db that has all the recipes.
I thought since the people at the head of the retail franchise have spent time gathering these recipes, I'll just get the data for the app from the db.
I called the project manager for the website up (That's the only contact I got) and asked if they could given me access to the db to use for the app or if I could make a script that would get data from it.
Now this is the part where I tell you I'm only 14 years old and these guys know that because of the head of the retail company.
He puts it on speaker and asks me to say it again and I hear quite a bit of people laughing. I knew what was happening. He asks do you know anything about databases, I explained to him what a db was and how I was going to get the data from it and etc. Half way through me telling him that it would be beneficial for both me and the retail guys, he hung up the call and blocked me.
I asked the head of the retail company if he could ask them about it and he said that he didn't know much about tech so he couldn't ask and if I could find an alternative option.
You might be thinking that the company didn't want to give me permission to access the db which is respectable but they have done this previously as well.
I gave them advice on putting a rewards card feature on the site so the customers could track their points on the site as well as on the app and the PM said "We don't want advice from you."
It has now been 3 weeks on and off because of school where I had to code a ui for the lady at the company to enter all her recipes for the app and waste a lot of time communicating with different people to get all the data.
I hate being disrespected because of my inexperience when I can truly do some extraordinary things with software. 😡😤😣
Its also very hard to find a job being 14.5 -

i am (somewhat unreasonably) mad at a ten year old classmate of my child. he showed off his programming skills by typing print commands. i wanted to mock him a little by pointing out python 2 would be out of date. he called my child a noob and suggested i don't know shit and he'd be coding c++.
so beside me obviously having no dignity for mocking someone quarter my age, i am not even mad for him talking shit about me, i am just overwhelmingly disappointed about his entitlement and blatant lies. so this is the future? this is an uprising nerd? i'd love to encourage every child on programming, but not with this attitude.13 -

Not sure if it is a rant or not but I'm getting worried about Apple... Two days passed uploaded a new update multiple times and all ended on the first try 😨
Usually it takes many tries for it to be uploaded 😨
On top of that, iTunesConnect is faster and no longer stuck at loading when token expires 😨
I hope I'm not dreaming 😅4 -

I've been creating my Typescript/C# projects using SOLID principles. Whenever someone randomly joins me in my projects at work, i feel they need a lot of help. Specially since they know programming, but are not familiar with SOLID.
Like ohhh ok you created a base class for that, or ohhh that method already exists in the base class sorry i've implemented it again, or ohhhh ok you already implemented this method in that class.
The more classes i create the more complicated it becomes, sometimes for me too!
I feel I have to write a documentation for the code I write just to keep up with the different, but code changes/augments so writing a doc is really time consuming.
However if i didnt create base classes or interfaces it would be less complicated to browse through method definitions.
I am happy with the code like that though, but in some specific times it's a pain in the ass.
Comments?2 -
This is really annoying. My single manual test takes 10 minutes to run. Can't blame the task because its big, can't blame me, code optimization is not necessary and won't speed anything up. So here writing a rant waiting for it to finish1

unfortunately we have a new CTO and handful of senior level resources joining our company this week, and I've risen to too lofty a position to be able to take the day off.

There are just too many interesting languages and technologies to learn and too little time. How does one manage that?7

I know it would be against devRant's simple UI and mechanism, but I'd love a Quote/Jump To Quote feature.1

Everything startest with HTML. I got an awesome book about HTML/CSS and I just started learning and trying out some stuff. At the beginning I got a lot of help from my father but soon I created my own websites! I setup a free webserver and after some time, I met PHP. I made tons of stuff with PHP :)
After about 1 year of creating things with PHP, I learned Javascript. And with Javascript I got into game development. I created some games but I wanted more. So I tried Unity Engine. But... well... It was hard. Then I tried Godot Engine and I finally found a game engine wich I enjoy!
I created a lot of games.
Then in 2016 I met Lua, wich is my favourite language now! (But I didn't do much with it)
Later I also met Node.js but I'm still learning :)1 -
I'm at that point again where I question whether I want to still do computer stuff for work, but this time I kinda want to do part-time computer work and part-time physical work instead..

October's begun and I haven't even started on my game. Fuck.
My SO's birthday is in December and I wanted to make a small game for her using elements from Limbo and the like because I can't draw anymore and because the graphics automatically become easier to make by myself that way. It's a 2d puzzle solving narration driven platformer where the player finds their way across the levels to his other half (simple and cute, maybe even cheesy).
But see, the thing is, I took on too much work again and I can 'barely' juggle them let alone work on the game and it's going to be December before I'll even know it. And I made sure to plan a really simple game with no extra flowers and shit to make sure I'd finish it on time but I won't be able to at this rate and it just makes me sad, like fuck, should've thought this through before. :/ But now here I am, ranting away while taking the dump of my life on the toilet taking out my frustration in quite the literal sense while verbally slapping my shit on devRant.
Feels bad man. -

Seriously, wtf give the work to someone else, claiming that "I'm too busy to do this", when all that other person does is come asking you for help, and not only do you have to figure out what needs to be done, you need to figure out how the other person fucked it up and try to fix it without hurting any feelings. Oh, and, yes, I was too busy for doing what is essentially double work.

The project seems simple on the surface but the edge cases and methods to handle certain subsets of data are breaking it because handling them is vague and takes time to figure out and every day something is fixed and something else ends up as the issue preventing completion.
On the surface the idea seems sound so I'm also under pressure to get something "this easy" done.
Starting to feel some burnout on this.1 -
System engineers who are "too busy" (facebook too much) to try anything new and get a heart attack when you only mention nginx

The ability to track all deliveries in real time using gps of the exact location is sort of creepy. Just spend about 10mins watching my dasher seemingly lost and trying to locate the restaurant...
But sorta feels like being an overlord watching his serf do his bidding...1 -
I think the most corruption in the field of programming is using the language Javascript. *Think Think*1

I got a fucking flu. My immune system became weak from excessive too much work and too little rest.....3

Curse windows nested folder path length and filename limit...can create it no problem but try to move or rename and the path is too long...

My dev sin is eating too much at spoons and feeling too bloated to concentrate at work for the afternoon

Well maybe its just me but I guess almost every dev out there was drinking a bit too much last night, seen that many rabts about it haha

!rant
how come I can't ++ my own rant or comment
Like I'm sick of people telling me I can't like myself.
I can fucking like myself if I want to.
It's my body my life.
We live in the age of self love and all that other shit.
Let me ++ myself.
Oh wait I figured it out.
++ing yourself might lead to spam rants where people post a hundred rants and ++ themselves for points.
I propose that ++ing ourselves become legal but it doesn't effect our total ++ rank9 -
I need to get an office outside home to work in. I was supposed to finish a project this weekend and i didn’t because i just chilled in the comfort of my room all day.6

Just asked a question that I considered myself as too "Too broad" but I don't know where to start myself.
Wish me luck. -
The "Outline" view in VSCode is useless
It shows too many nodes too deep so it looks like a giant heap of everything7 -
When someone gives you a requirements document that has too many details including table names that do not fit your convention but doesn't give a simple breakdown of things such as when x = y do this.
My job is so much more complicated since the requirements document is almost 3k words when it could be a few paragraphs. -
The devs delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of abstraction hell... shadow and flame1

I been casually looking for a new job as a senior software engineer. I have about 7 years of experience, mainly back end, and it seems like everyone has a different way of doing technical interviews. What type of questions would you expect to be asked? I've gotten everything thing from white board code and solutions (expected), technical questions (expected), to code an API from scratch (not hard, but not really a good judge of skills). How do you identify whether a job is a sweatshop vs. a good job?2

# This isn't THAT bad, but since I never had any collab before this one, this is the worst so far
I'm in a web development school where we need to do a yearly project. At the beginning, we started with the idea of doing an online wallet that would handle crypto-currencied (#blockchains), and other currencies too.
On the paper that sounds good, but the dude decided to create a NodeJS server api, and let's be honest, this was a gas factory. I couldn't help him because he was too fast in his ideas, and the third member was a bit more useful because he was the one creating the mobile app, so all he needed was an url that the dude couln't manage to create.
After a few weeks he started over the project, then over again a few weeks later, before coming to us and saying it was too difficult. We said "yeah, I mean you're own your own since the beginning, no wonders!" "Uh do you guys care if we change the whole project to do something else? Like a CV library"
Went a moment where he tried to over sell some incredible (read "overly common") features that already existed 10 years ago on some famous websites (ie. Monster), and he then eventually told me that this idea came from his new job, and that they needed this library. So we would have to work for his company for free. Nice.
The third guy and me came with a new idea (image recognition with IA and stuff), and we saw the dude maybe 5 times the whole week while we're supposed to work together -
Me yesterday: "I have too much projects... maybe I should shelve some..."
My head this morning: "I have this splendid new idea for you to work on"2 -

BIG QUESTION TIME:
I want to start a small web-dev project. Basically a website with different gigs like a time tracking app. Maybe extend it in the future with other apps.
First I thought of starting with a CMS (I am quite good with Joomla!) but realized it may too soon get to its' limits and personalized extensions are quite a pain with CMS.
So I had this genius idea of working on frontend using ReactNative giving the opportunity to build for mobile in the same time and backend with Python (maybe Django framework).
Here are my questions:
1) Could this be a good solution or combination? (Considering it is more of a fun project)
2) Does anyone know a good tutorial for ReactNative besides the facebook github tutorial?2 -
Dvorak users, how do you manage your shortcuts, like in vim?
I can't quit it anymore! 😜
I am too scared to remap everything.6 -
Is it too much to apply these notification settings to in-app ones also, the list you can see by pushing bell button. I don’t wanna learn who ++ed me or new comments.
I know we can mute rants manually but it is an extra manual effort. Auto-muting all rants i touched except direct mentions is what I really want.4 -
Help me out a bit, functional programming fans!
I'm experimenting with functional programming through JavaScript.
I created some dummy data to experiment with and created a simple function to query the data. I would like to get all elements, whose type attribute is not 'x'. A simple solution can be seen under the 'original code' part.
Under the 'fully functional code' part I gathered some frequently used general purpose functions, which I assembled into the function composition at line 45.
I'm having a bad taste in my mouth and feel that I've gone too far. I basically replaced every language element for a function. Is this the goal of functional programming? Is this how a perfectly functional code should look like?1 -
Starting to get a few beta testers for my website(real estate platform) today.wish me luck guys.hopefully they like the functionality.i still haven't made the front end pretty though.oh yeah.and it's my mid year cs101 exam1

bitbucket you slow fucking sack of shit, we've confirmed with our remote team members that other people on other networks have it slow as shit too
I really wish we could convince our team to migrate to gitlab or github instead
can't tell if it failed to find the pull request associated with certain commits because it's slow a shit, shit (because it's atlassian bitbucket) or both
there is the small chance that maybe it's just the shit telecom industry in this country too on top of it, but things were acceptable before -

Side project <3 well let's dream a little with this one.
I want to 'finish' my ECS library https://devrant.io/collabs/826092/...
And after that I want to make a cross platform window manager, and after that again a cross platform package manager, and with that a little gui library using blend2D which take full control of my window manager.
And well I'd like to make a server and a client for matrix too :D
OH, I need to find a job... Fuck -
I had to start over learning SQL when I faced the JSON functions of PostgreSQL during a try and error period to get nested json_agg in one query.. I'am too old for that low level stuff! 🤨

You know it's time for a break when you go to your browser and type in function instead of facebook.4

So I started learning html, css and javascript this year... After getting stuck in understanding a few concepts I started learning a little of sql and Java...
Now after a few begginer tutorials I have no idea where to go or what to dedicate my studies...
Most companies around my city use Java, but I'm already 29 years old and I feel like this will be a problem... Should I focus on learning frameworks and try big companies internships, or go for web development and start working on my own?5 -
Has anybody been at a place when you try to finish stories but it just takes too long? And finishing work in general seems very difficult? How do you deal with this or break the cycle?

New question.
When debugging/troubleshooting, what does your desktop look like?
I have a total of 8 production environments to look after, each of which have their appropriate dev environments. Troubleshooting for me typically starts with VisualVM, 6-8 Putty sessions across the environments, at least one dbms session, WinSCP with at least 4 sessions, text editor with minimum of five open files and at least thirty tabs open in Chrome. Oh yeah, forgot outlook and Skype (typically with at least three team mates and usually a group chat).
All is well when I'm in the zone, but good forbid for someone to ask me to show them the article/bug report I just read that sent me down the rabbit hole.1 -
JS is such open language with too many frameworks and too many libraries. Takes lot of time choosing good code to use.

why am i not able to find a way to use multidimensional associative arrays in vba?
plus: why am i too dumb to see my own data structure and process data sheets in a complicated way instead of using prepared data with a simple string split?3 -
You know how people rant about js frameworks; well the very same is true about nosql.
I thought let me broaden my horizon (pun intended) with a nosql db in my project.
So from Friday evening, I started off with ElasticSearch, which is pretty simple to get started, but apparently I need to understand it a lot better to use it as a primary data-store.
Then I stumble upon orient-db, was pretty exciting and learnt the apis/librarys but researching it a bit more to learn about the community; there is some bad-blood there.
Now I'm onto something called ArangoDB, think I'll stick with this; Any more time spent on this and I'll just give up on the project.5
