Senior IT engineer enters the room and quietly talks to a coworker about a job related issue.
Another coworker decided to troll the sysadmin.
CW: *yells* "Open a ticket!" (That's the sysadmin's regular reply)
IT: *ignores*
CW: *trying to get his attention* "Open a ticket first! Then come back"
IT: *gives him the stare of death*
CW: "Go away and open a ticket!"
IT: *silently leaves the room*
After no more than a minute CW gets a reject from all networks outside the company's VPN.
IT comes back into the room, get's intimately close to CW's ear and says "Now open a ticket".

So my girlfriend (non techie) just saw my rant about how I'd give her a baby if she knew how to close vim in a proper way (she saw me on devRant, asked me to show it and read my rants) and so I showed her vim so she'd get the joke.
I than told her, how it worked and such so she'd see how it's not a regular text editor and told her to try and quit it, and to my amazement, she did!
Guess she's a keeper :')11 -
Client: "This feature doesn't work! I thought you said it was done?!"
Me: "Please press CTRL+F5 and try again..."
Client: "Okay, great, works now."
A conversation I seem to have on a very regular basis.9 -
Regular day at Adobe:
Intern: Sir, I have created this amazing functionality that will make user's life easy. Shall I push it for review?
Manager: Did you say it will make their life easy?
Intern: Yes Sir!
Manager: Can we fire this intern already?
Adobe, seriously man make up your goddamn mind. Why the fuck are you taking away useful features and making them hidden under hundreds of icons you have. This is so fraustrating 😡7 -
Oh this week is gonna be fun.
I regularly ssh into my computers when I'm too lazy to login through the regular keyboard.
I usually have to move for about half a second in order to reach the keyboard but too lazy .______.4 -
Co-worker loves macos' features/interface but for him, an operating system being open source is a very important thing.
So important that he ditched his mac for a Linux machine. (regular Ubuntu)
Today we recommended him Elementary OS.
Guess who's completely in love!

My own language, hence my own parser.
Reinvented the regular expression before realizing it already existed (Google didn't exist at the time).
I'm a living reference for regular expressions since then.7 -

At work:
"I do not get your concerns over ssl, it works fine when we use ie"
"What do you mean by xss? A regular use would not even try ans attempt something like that"
"We need to keep the txt file with the passwords there, its an internal project, the public would not even attempt to reach our site, just put them back"
Ah the many stories that I have from this place. It is an otherwise good place to work at tho, but oh well...
Me on a daily basis tho9 -
Today the CEO called a meeting with our team just to get to know us personally and have some friendly chat. These meetings are to become a regular thing. Seems like he really cares about his employees.11

!rant I got permission from @dfox for this.
I'm a visual learner and like to see and hear what I'm being taught. I also am fed up with StackOverflow.. plus, it lacks in detailed learning and best practices. I created a new platform that allows you to view and create live talks for development discussions, demos, and presentations. Think of it like a 24/7 dev conference.
I'm releasing it early to devRant users. Just note, that it is in early beta but I do regular releases.
Go ahead and start creating your talks at http://unityco.de17 -
So my girlfriend was complaining about the lights late night. As a regular dev I code until about 2am in the morning.
So here I present the ultimate dark theme. Darkroom red. No additional light source required, just your monitor(s).16 -
When you have one problem and you decide to use regular expressions...
You need to know this: you have two problems now.3 -
It's so fuckin hard to work with people who don't get sarcasm or humour.
The UI guy gives me design (which is a regular design, not something unique)
Me: “wow fresh and unique design (obviously sarcasm).”
Designer: “thanks, I worked on this whole day. Glad you like it.”
Me: “huh...”
Now I feel like a terrible person.6 -
I have a friend that is a girl that loves to snapchat everything she does, the problem is that she now works (in apprenticeship) at a huge company and she snapchats her desktop who has a lots of post-it notes and her screen which is showing excel spreadsheets with customers data and stuff...
And she does this on a regular basis btw
Who can be possibly that dumb...5 -

Late 90's, I was about 12-13, Realized the source I was viewing was pretty much the whole website. Created a tribute page for rock music. It looked like a regular ol' shitty 90's website. Then one day my father showed me it's mentioned in quite a complementing way in a big national newspaper under the web section, didn't realize till much later that he was probably the one who informed them about its existence, but it was too late, as I've already tasted the fame&glory. Thanks dad! :)

So the water dispenser in the kitchen does not have sparkling water, which I love. But there's one in the meeting room down the corridor that has sparkling water!
Like any regular employee of course I filed a request with site manager to upgrate the kitchen dispenser... NOT!
I wrote an app that sits in the taskbar when minimized and shows a traffic light with the status of the meeting room availability so I know when it's clear to go fetch me some of that bubbly goodness!8 -

Me (as a Senior developer): How will you solve this problem using regular expression?
Junior developer: *Explains*

People argue all the time what text editor is the best: VSCode, Sublime, NP++, Emacs, Nano, Vim, etc.
I just remembered when I used to do my HTML, CSS and JS in regular Windows Notepad, as a requirement in my Web Developement classes...
I think some good came from that, I picked up a habit of writing my code very neatly, easily readable.18 -
Difference n°538592 between developers and regular people:
"Do you listen music at work ? If so what app do you use ?
- (regular people) I don't / I use Spotify/Youtube.
- (me) I usually listen to my personal webradio server (running with icecast+liquidsoap on a little ubuntu DO droplet). Currently has a few funny jingles made by a friend and +3000 tracks (this number grows with time as I listen to new stuff), all crate-digged by myself for myself. Basically the the best radio in the whole world <3"21 -

Growing up with thw crappiest netbook for 8 years, then a regular laptop, now an i3 laptop.
It pains me to see my classmates having i7 laptops and all they do with it is watch movies and browse the internet. All that wasted potential!

Bezelless displays are a joke. Even the regular displays like this one from my laptop don't need nearly as much bezel as they're usually given.
The black indent at the top of the picture is hiding the display controller, which can easily be moved to the back. The rest of it.. a little bit of internal frame to keep the LCD intact during impacts on the outer case but that's about it.11 -

*receives an old business laptop as payment for refurbishing another one*
Hmm, this thing doesn't have a charger with it.. looks like it's taking 18.5V.. my HP laptop's charger supplies that but its barrel connector doesn't fit 🤔
Regular users: oh dear now I have to buy a charger with a fitting connector for this.. where do I even start?!
Me: Well I guess I could just remove the charging port and solder some wires straight into the board instead 🤔
But that voltage.. my HP laptop's charger is still in use and I don't really want to fuck around with that one.
Regular users: oh dear oh dear, shouldn't I just throw this laptop away?
Me: well I guess that I could just use one of the rails of my upgraded lab bench power supply for it?
Lab electronics saving the day, every day, time and time again.. fuck yeah 😎6 -
Python is a wonderful language.
But apparently the C syntax is still so deeply engrained in my mind that I get errors when using "printf()" instead of "print()" on a regular basis. m)6 -
"Lightweight rant"
Good job, devs of Sparkasse.
Time to "jobn't" y'all.
That error message is very informational.
I know it is because of the time counter being at 0 and I need to relogin to reset it, but what if I was a regular dumb client? To add more salt into it, what if I was someone in his 90s.
Do your fucking job properly.
Edit: The error message translates to "Error", "Error" and "Close"4 -
Can't stand people who compare high powered over priced MACs to regular cheap entry level consumer computer. Compare like for like....for Fuck sake. This dweeb just compared a £2100 MAC and a £600 consumer computer......!!!!....!!!!!17

Apple’s new iPhone lineup has confusing names:

I find it quite entertaining how "psychologists" think that people with autism/Asperger have difficulty making eye contact in general. Whenever I talk to fellow engineers, people that I like talking to and feel comfortable with, I look them in the eyes at pretty much the same rate as a regular person would. But the thing is.. looking someone in the eyes expresses interest!14

Regular expressions is like a condom, it's safe, combat tested and works most of the time.
But if you use it too much it gets dirty quickly.3 -
YouTube. I used to love it a lot but now I don't recognize it. It pushes its agenda everywhere only certain content becoming popular. And regular people don't have much of a way for getting noticed unless they're in an extremely niche section. It's gone the way of the TV and I don't think it's coming back barring a massive internal restructuring.2

Got rejected after final-round interviews with Amazon again. Can’t say it doesn’t hurt, but I understand it.
So to make myself feel better, I started working on the idea I’ve had for a while that I realize is going to be a huge time sink and silly, but I love it.8 -
Apple is now forcing 2 factor authentication for publishing apps on the App Store. Except not just regular 2 factor, 2 factor via AppleId. Which means you have to have the AppleID on 2 different Apple devices! You now have to have a Mac and another Apple device to ship an app and you still have to pay $100/yr for the license.
Hell I usually like Apple stuff but this has gone so fucking far off the rails.10 -
Stepped out of my comfort zone and dropped a Zoom link into the channel for Lambda grads to see if anyone wanted to work through code challenges together. It ended up being enjoyable enough that I’m thinking of making it a regular thing. Meanwhile, contribution graph is still going strong.2

I put a nano receiver for a wireless mouse in my friend's pc when he got up to do something, then spent the next hour wiggling it periodically. Not enough to be obvious, but enough to disrupt the regular mouse movements and make it seem like the mouse was sticking. I heard him say to his friend that the computer was possessed.

Everytime a form on a website has suggestions I press tab to autocomplete it. I keep being surprised when I see it doesnt work.2

I spent almost 10 hours coming up with this RegEx. Trial and erroring my way to hell. First I had get rid of the HTML tags (which was easy-ish) then I spent most of my time trying to figure out how to remove the god damn dash but keep hyphenated words ....... Then I found \B and look behinds...
I am making it a point to get good at this shit... Because right now I am petrified of it... Fuck you Regular expression you have taken away all my emotions...15 -
At the Ritz Hotel bar in London England. That client was charged an arm and a leg because I was attending my cousin's wedding and I had to tack on a fee for the $75 regular drinks.3
-
I had a client that used to send emails to detail requests or report bugs on a software.
Now, believe it or not, this was the regular way:
An email with just an introduction and a Word document attached, containing very verbose descriptions (usually not in a human known language) and most importantly, screenshots.
What's so weird about this? Those pictures were captured with printscreen, printed on paper, scanned and then inserted inside the doc 😭😭
Why all this? I don't know, otherwise I wouldn't have posted it as #wk32 ☺3 -
Today on forgotten movies – Chronicle.
A very grim, very dark movie about accidental superpowers discovery, but with some school-shooter vibes.
Don't you find it predictable how in regular movies a hero saves the world against all odds in the very last moment? Well, forget about it here – this movie is not "cinematic" at all, and that's what I like about it.
A horror in regular movies doesn't usually scare because the image itself is too perfect – you don't usually see the world like this. It doesn't seem real, that's the problem. By adopting the "found footage" screen language, Chronicle delivers the horror perfectly, because the world in it seems perfectly real, just like you see it through obscure youtube videos named MOV_0115 or IMG1014.
I like it that the characters actually look like real people, not like stereotypical superheroes and not even like enhanced versions of people that try to sell you an idea of what "success" looks like.
People in the movie also act real. They're weak, they're scared, they're irrational, and you really start to believe that yeah, this is what probably gonna happen when a human faces something as unbearable as superpowers discovery. And, as weird as it sounds, the superpower itself also looks totally real – raw, unpolished, uncontrollable force that requires getting used to and probably is too much for a regular human. Definitely not a perfect, tailored thing that turns anyone into Mary Sue.
Overall, this movie is the most immersive one I've ever seen. If you want to see what would really happen if you discover a superpower, this movie is for you.4 -

Hey, people's of devrant!
You guys seem to know a lot about this, so I'm going to ask this question here..
Can i have some recommendations for apps to use (Android) that respect privacy and are preferably enctypted?
Things I would like:
Google drive / Dropbox alternative
Image upload
A nice looking image viewer / gallery (I don't like the Samsung one)
An RSS feed reader.
Google docs alternative
Maybe a calendar / reminder app
I think that's it. Also feel free to mention other apps that you guys use on a regular basis26 -
I've just closed a shitload of issues on three different projects.. my head is exploding and I just want to relax a bit.. So while I was sitting on my regular private place, sipping on my beer... I was checking my Projects folder and found old personal project of mine from before 4 years or so.. its been an hour and 3 beers.. It looks so much easier now than when I began it.. and yeah.. Somehow maybe useful some day.. app that gathers my emails and checks for bills for electricity and etc. Just to sort all this stuff out you know. Well who knew that it could be so relaxing?16

If you ever get a problem with your Linux,
DO NOT EVER try out an answer on any random forum without reading all the comments/replies.
The problem spreads like a freaking wildfire and you will end up reinstalling Linux and losing data what wasn't backed up. (If by God's grace, you do a regular back up)2 -
Just in case you thought you and your tech job were weird I give you:
Herpetologist: I caught a turtle here in Costa Rica.
Camera man: Cool. What kind is it?
H: this is the white eared red footed mud guppy. See what's interesting is that it has white sides of its face. And red feet. And lives in Costa Rica. In the mud. It is not a guppy though. Guppies are fish.
C: Cool and why is it important?
H: It's a white eared red footed mud guppy.
C: what does it do?
H: It's a turtle.
C: yeah but is it endangered? Venomous?
H: Nope. Just a regular old turtle.
C: so you just ran 50 miles and dove in to a random body of water that probably contained malaria and herpes to catch a regular turtle.
H: well it's not a regular turtle
C:(glares) it isn't?
H: it is. But it's a white eared red footed mud guppy.
C: so why did you catch it?
H: I like turtles.
So look at it this way: you could be the camera man.2 -
Just got accepted for a game developer. Ive been making games since I was 12 as hobby. Did a few months of university level of Game Development. Then started as web devloper professionally. The company I work for found a project as game dev for me.
I love my work and the sales team for finding me that job, even though its out of scope of their regular projects.2 -
- booting Linux
- starting Clonezilla
- kernel panic after some time
- WTF, this used to work
- look at sensor values
- CPU is really hot
- CPU fan doesn't work
- BIOS warning disabled because the lowest regular fan level is 0 RPM
Luckily, I still had some cheap 120mm fan which is a bit louder, but works. What's astonishing is that in normal operation, i.e. without full load, the case fans alone provided enough air stream for the CPU cooler.8 -
Fuck! I am never gonna get hired again. I fucking suck at live coding. My mind just fucking gets blocked. On simple shit like arrays. I still suck at regular expressions though. Fucking failed Amazon and now wayfare.!!!! Fuck my fucking god dam life.9

How regular students knows end of school year is coming

How I know when end of the school year is coming

I fucking hate malls.
People don't walk in any regular pattern or at the same speed. Full of smelly kids and their dumbstruck parents. I REALLY do not understand how some choose to spend their time at the mall as a recreational activity (other than going with a specific destination in mine, like the cinema). Whenever the circumstances force me to wonder around one for more than ten minutes, for me it's the equivalent of several hours of work, energywise.
Generally I hate people, but malls are the places where I hate them the most. Fuck!5 -
When you switch a regular keyboard to an emoji one on an iPhone, the keyboard becomes a several pixels shorter. It’s barely noticeable but when you notice it, you can’t unsee it.

Me: *with not enough experience to get it done within a day. Still does it by staying up all night*

Boss: I didn't want this, skip rest of the modules and jump to Module 10 (extremely complex) and I want it tomorrow.
Me: ;_;12 -
I am in love with regex (re in py)!
It is so damn cool!
Unfortunately, Python's find is faster.
But regex is so much better when it comes to complex patterns you would not be able to find with the regular (do you see the pun here? ;)) python's string object find method.4 -
New opportunity coming to the people who try. Got this opportunity, i better not suck at it. Give it regular time everyday to earn atleast some title before my degree.9

The joy of running your own experiments.
So, after several decades I can report the following about Asthma..
Or at least, the form I've got, as many decades ago I read a book about how there are different forms, and some apparently respond to exercise.
So, I regularly exercised, it went away.
Tried not regular exercising, its come back..
So, I'll try regular exercise again, and see if it goes away !
This has been a public service announcement.
Note: I've no idea how you tell the different types apart, perhaps someone else knows the answer to that one !3 -
Had a job interview today as a Junior Python dev. The hardest part: they asked things, that I used to learn in some time in the past, but got rusty in my memory because I don't use em much. Like "to write func that sorts array". Last time I was writing sorting without standard library at least half a year ago. Same with the regular expressions (need em the most once in several months) or sql expressions (last time - 7 month ago). How to remember these things?9

Came across this company when I was looking for regex for organization-ids/organization-numbers. 😂8

I'm a php developer.
I don't like preg functions (regular expressions) and i don't remember exactly the syntax for alternate words.

Dear sirs @dfox and @trogus.
You done a very fine job :)3 -
After doing a regular CV update, I realised I started coding more than a quarter of a century ago... I then remembered the first command the succeedded on my first PC.
format C:
There was a book that expained how to format a floppy disk (format A:) but it didn't work. At that time I had no idea what floppy is but I knew that C: works, so I thought I'd give it a try...
Oh, was there laughter in the repair shop :) -
@dfox what would you say about a "following" feature?
Because I've noticed some absolute regular golden rants coming from some of the same ranters on here and would be cool to never miss the stuff they come out with.3 -
My worst experience with a recruiter has to be when i wasn't interested in a particular position they became hostile with me demanding why and contacting me on a regular basis to see if i had changed my mind.
Truth is you ain't getting shit from me.
Always remember you have the control with recruiters, don't give them the ability to take you for a ride. -
All Russian luxury brands are scam. And I mean ALL of them. No matter if it says "made in England" or "made in France" on the package, it's still a scam if it's Russian deep inside. It's just the regular shit repacked and sold at 20x the price.
Here's the algo:
1. You lookup the brand name that claims to be luxury
2. If it has something to do with Russia (Russian executives, etc) — it's a scam.
This doesn't cover the regular, non-luxury brands. AK is still a good weapon, KMS is still a good windows 10 crack :)12 -
After much muttering about making a program to parse regular expressions into more human-readable English, I think I'm finally at the point that I'd like to invite you to try it out.
Notes:
- I do not claim this is perfect. I know for a fact there are things I haven't added yet -- hexadecimals, for example. *shudder* -- and I'm sure there are edge cases I haven't figured out yet
- I would welcome any feedback.
- Please be kind.

Can any regular job make a person happy? No matter what the pay or content of the job is, I get bored easily and disappointed at myself.
I have more fire inside me when I am doing personal projects but am not entrepreneur myself either.10 -
This is the most wtf thing that happened me with Javascript, I had a regular expression and it caused bugs only with 4 digits long words, then I just noticed this:
/^.{3}$/.test(null) // false
/^.{4}$/.test(null) // true
What the fuck, I can't believe that who designed the .test method didn't think to avoid null coercion2 -
Guys. GUYS. There are so many freaking weird edge cases for regular expression evaluation. *head desk*8
-
Honestly?
No way.
No matter what you give up for your family and friends.
It's never enough.
"You're always tired"
"You're not interested enough in my/our stuff"
"No wonder you won't proceed with your carrier, when you act like that"
C'mooooooon!
Give me a chance to build up a regular life.
Most Ppl = Egotistical piles of crap.
Sorry for this dark rant :/2 -
Not doing it for the money alone unless you want to be depressed and wealthy.
Find the most inspiring work that pay your bills: when you're the best at what you love you will find a way to get paid for that (or something closely related).
On the micro level, I try to talk to / learn from coworkers a lot and take regular breaks.1 -
I've been using Firefox focus for a while, and for the most part, I like it. But why the hell won't it let me go to government websites (taxes, passports, etc)?
Regular Firefox has no issues with it, why does focus?4 -
Programmer like working at night (at least I like working at night). Would it be cool if there is a company which the work hour will start at midnight and end at early morning?
Customer facing side of the company can work the regular hour while developer will work at night.10 -
Am I the only one that comes to the sad realization that if I wanna have a happy and healthy lifestyle I have to sleep a lot and avoid caffeine and do exercise on a daily basis and, on the other hand, if I wanna do all the things I'd like to do concerning software development (and hold a regular job) I have to sacrifice sleep, exercise and switch water to coffee?10

How do you guys prevent yourself from overworking? With deadline pressures I feel like it is very easy to work more than your regular 8 hours22

If you were to write a regular expression to match phone numbers in the format of either:
(123) 456-7890 or
123-456-7890
Would you prefer a regular expression that looked like:
A) /^(?:\(\d{3}\) |\d{3}-)\d{3}-\d{4}$/g
B) ^\(\d{3}\) \d{3}-\d{4}$|^\d{3}-\d{3}-\d{4}$/g
C) Other
D) I hate regex
Reasoning? Alternative? Discuss.
(I'm curious about preferences surrounding the readability of regular expressions)16 -
How many times will you say hi to me when we're passing on the stairs for nth time? How many 👋 will you send me in one day at almost regular intervals? I'm not a fucking rest api. Sitting in the couch at night with devRant opened. Wondering why I haven't ranted in the past 3 days considering I'm pretty regular at ranting.
Then I remember I DIDN'T DO SHIT in the last 3 F*cking days -
This is the real times. This is not that it's happening right now, this is pretty regular. Lesson? Rethink before you decide the variable type4

Still boggles my mind that it took something like coronavirus for people to start covering their mouth when sneezing / coughing, washing hands and let's not even mention public places like shopping malls and stores to start with regular disinfection of their premises.. 🙄🤦♂️8

College admissions are looking bad rn (because yay for pandemic). Do I need a computer engineering degree for a regular dev job, or is IT enough?
I just want to write some damn code and drink tea, not reinvent the computer7 -
At one point I understood a lot of git internals. Now I don't remember shit apart from the small subset of commands that I use everyday.
How does one remember such intricacies.
Also same with regular expressions xD6 -
Talking about bad error messages
I missed the regular enrollment period for courses starting in 2 weeks, but I did have late enrollment days, which I remembered.
When wanting to late enroll, I was greeted with th error message in the picture. Bad news first, good news later I guess
As you can imagine, my heart skipped a beat. Nonetheless, it was all good in the end, because I was already enrolled for the compulsory courses I wanted to take4 -

Wow Good job7 -
wow... the regular react community sucks...
where with react-native 3rd party libraries/components have very clear and detailed docs, the normal react libs out there are like:
20K starred component
"here is a .txt file with some props, TS? yea we use it, but everything is just set to ?: any"
quite the shame :/3 -
Welp gotta re-image that Server because I forgot the password. Well not so much forgot it as apparently typoed it in both the regular and confirmation boxes 😬 It was just a test server, sure, but that doesn’t make me feel less dumb.4

Started new course called "Introduction to natural language processing" in uni. I am super bad at doing regular expressions and don't understand anything about them.
Saw the first weeks homework. Have to do i.e. some text cleanup with regex... I was sad. But now after reading the course material and trying some of the exercises I'm super excited since I'm actually doing something "real" with it.
Do you guys just love it when teaching material is well written? I do.3 -
For the first time in history, I have ended a regular sentence using a semi colon instead of the proper punctuation.1

Me: Alright Derwent, don't fuck up this database update. There's no undo button and no way to import a database backup so you gotta be extra careful or you're going to have to spend hours writing a whole bunch of regular expressions and sql statements to sift through an 11mb database dump and figure out how to restore 59 thousand records to the correct state. Let's practice this transition on a staging server first and make sure we get it right
Me: I got you fam *presses the wrong button* -
TL;DR - Mining coins to solve captchas
I was puzzled when I clicked to download something and this little captcha thingy appeared. I clicked, as usual, to solve it, but was amazed to look just a progess bar going and going... then I saw a little legend that says "what's this?", click and this is the link
https://coinhive.com/info/...
Practically, you're mining Monero instead of watching ads and solving regular captchas...
What are your thoughts on this?4 -
Sometimes I start writing a sentence that ends with parentheses (only to realize what I put in the parentheses is as important as the rest, then I could use a regular comma instead).
I call this "grammatical tail-call recursion".2 -
Starting up the new Java project I'm assigned to.
Just to see that this project is made of pure black magic and tears of forsaken devs.
Crashing the jvm with segfaults on a regular basis is just one part of the magic.
Now I understand why no one volunteered for this project...2 -
Seriously,
when a company asks to recruit a developer, but only female developer for a regular post.
What IS exactly the work to do? 🤔11 -
Living life with regular work (8 hours per day, programming) and studying CS for masters degree is fucking disaster... I cant wait for end, all I do is fucking thinking. All I have is this one hour when I go to the gym and some time with my gf... I'm afraid when this ends (5 weeks) I wont know what to do in my spare time... Oh I know! Writing my masters thesis....2

Restarting regular expression parser from scratch has been good. I am somehow both much farther to completion and farther away from completion than I was in the earlier implementation.
Further in the sense that this implementation is going to be way more flexible to changes in the language
Farther in that I haven’t even got all of the regex parts added to the first stage yet.
But I’m feeing good about it.
Even if I did refactor it so my constants are in all caps and now feel like my core is yelling at me.11 -
It's holiday season and since I suck immensely at keeping a regular sleeping schedule, I just woke up at 6:35pm. 4 days left to fix it

I thought I had a great understanding of regular expressions but today I tried to use them in vim... Why the fuck they have to be so different there??4
-
Is it even possible to get good enough at regular expressions where you can just write it and you don't have to search stackoverflow for one that works?9
-
Perhaps one of the most important things I will ever learn in life is how powerful regularity is. Read up on a topic once? Understand nothing? Read more random shit on it. Keep reading. And then stare in awe as things fall into place.
I'm writing this out not because people don't know this. Almost everyone knows this. But it's nice to be reminded of it. It's nice to be reminded that learning new things and honing bew skills is never easy. It's nice to be reminded that there's great knowledge and skills waiting to be learned.
This is not meant as motivation so much as it is meant as a reminder. Our colleagues may be garbage. Our clients may be garbage. Our bosses, the interns, the new dev, and almost certainly ourselves, are almost always garbage.
But if you've learned 1-2 new things today, the day wasn't garbage.
I'm just learning move semantics... -

If you watch a 30fps video at 2x, is it the same as watching it at 60fps?
I usually watch anime (all videos) at 2x on my phone but when I watch it at regular speed it feels stuttery now but not sure if 2x is the same or it just uses frameskipping. Not sure how that works wither but wouldn't that cause more stutter?11 -

Motorola:
It was the only company which used to provide great budget android smartphone with stock android and regular updates. (ranting this on my Moto G3) But from moto G3, they fucked up with promised android OS upgrade (shitty Lenovo)
Microsoft (for fucking with windows 10):
Still remember that first stable build of windows 10 released in 2015. After the first update they never stopped fucking with user's computer with different bugs. Still I haven't seen any build as stable as first one.1 -
This regular expression documentation thing is coming along. Added capture groups and backreferences. Think I just need to tackle Unicode property escapes and control characters.
But now I feel like I should have implemented it differently. Like, maybe instead of “‘a’ followed by ‘b’ followed by ‘c’, I should have just done ‘abc’.
*sigh*1 -
Blender! Simply because they are well organized (they even use a public kanban board in phabricator 😊) and are improving the project with so much passion. Also they use the software themselves in projects on a regular basis so they know very well what has to be improved.
Exciting for blender 2.8 😁 show them some love: www.blender.org -
Never understood the hate for regular expressions, it's just one more useful tool in my eyes. Anyone want to weigh in?9

Puts three months of work into this project; cronjob to ping 3 APIs at regular intervals, cleans, massive features extraction, dumps into PostgreSQL db. Got Django on top of that with a small neural net and interesting viz - absolutely gorgeous!
Can’t fuckin wait to showcase that.

So my boss was developing a app for personal use and it was very nice and had many features. One day there was a mac os update. He updated his system thinking he backed up everything like a week ago (let me spoil you a little bit... it was four weeks ago...). He did the update and it stopped working whilst updating and he lost all his data and with that he lost the app he made. He has now started from scratch again. Guys what does that teach us? Do regular backups! I learned something from that myself!2

A former colleague sent my resume to a bunch of companies and a recruiter from one of them sent me a super generic email saying thanks for your interest in the open position, can you do a phone call? I said sure, would love to discuss software developer internship openings. 1 hour before the call, he sends me a JD for a regular full-time business analyst position and says he wants to discuss that position. SIGH. DUDE, I WANT TO CODE.1

A famous quote attributed to Jamie Zawinski:
"Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll use regular expressions." Now they have two problems."
I am living this nightmare. Joined a project where schmucks are parsing SQL using regular expressions. Talked to a friend, a compiler developer expert. He told me that regexes can't be used for checking if braces are matched. Pumping Lemma. Those fuckers should have used ANTLR or something. Anyways planning to leave this project.2 -
Xiaomi
they crack the market of mid and low range mobile devices and nowdays they are just showing freaking ad too frequent.
like normally when you pause video you get to choose play button but in xiaomi they show you a big ad on screen. they even show ad on every operation of file, multimedia etc.. and also because they provide regular update at cost of useless app which consumes lot of storage.3 -

Built a pFSense box for home with said proxy. Even though my internet connection is slow it seems fast now thanks to squids MITM https proxy and http proxy. Plus a little QoS helps. And it has so many more features than a regular router.... WTF didn't I do this sooner?4

My company is supposed to be 'remote friendly'
Any request to work from home is a fight to get approved, regular days frequently get cancelled for vital meetings and best of all our infrastructure is so shit the VPN drops silently every 5-10 mins. Good luck doing a big merge or getting latest code.3 -
Hey there people, I have a few questions regarding neo4j. Your experience could also be very useful to me here @dfox.
1. Is neo4j good for storing user data, like password hashes, etc.. In addition to the regular relationships with other components of the ecosystem
2. Is neo4j good enough to accommodate a really large number of users..
3. Does DevRant use a dual database, like user info in Mongo and relationships like comments and ++ on neo4j or is it like everything on neo4j
For q.3, if you're not @dfox then just provide an idea of how you would handle the situation.7 -
Maybe not so wk65
but nobody posts a awesome regular expression?

The main benefit of an office environment for me is - conversely - the best part of working from home. It's super useful to be able to just summon someone for a 7 minute pair programming session, but i have a much greater focus at home when I know I won't be interrupted during work hours.
This whole situation is definitely making me want to work more from home and I'll probably try to make it a regular occasional thing in the future.1 -

Guys, I need some inspiration. How are you dealing with memory leaks, i. .e identifying which component of the system is leaking memory?
Regular method of dumping ps aux sorted by virtual memory usage is not working as all the processes are using the same amount of memory all the time. This is XEN dom0 memory leak, and I have no more ideas what to do.
Is it possible that guests could be eating the dom0 memory?15 -

For my Thesis
Hello devs on the internet,
I’m currently collecting data for my thesis. As my thesis is about freelancers I was hoping to interview a couple of people here who used to have a regular job and transitioned to freelancing. Interviews will be over email so it hopefully won’t take up a lot of time.
As for people who wouldn’t be available for interviews, could you help me out by answering a survey? 😁
For interviews could you email me at uzair.hayat@benilde.edu.ph
For surveys you can fill it out here https://goo.gl/forms/...
This message has not been approved by Dfox and I hope it won’t be removed haha2 -
I started my career at a company that ran boot camps 24/7. I learned a lot but they did some shady shit. The company changed their name often so they couldn't be tracked and posed as a regular subcontracting agency and gave trainees fake backgrounds with an extensive resumes so people could get hired. I mean how else would Joe out of college with no experience get a job requiring 5 years minimum.3

If a minor unimportant thing comes to our time from a very far future, is it able to cause a time paradox?
Like a single grain of sand. Not carrying a deadly pathogen that will wipe out the entire humanity, just a regular grain of sand.
Will it cause a time paradox? Is anything that comes to our time from the future guaranteed to cause a time paradox? If so, why?9 -
I developed a simple feedback form, that captures user feedback and forwards it to a customer care email.
Today, I received a call from someone who was sub-contracted to create a system that would ingest these feedback emails and process the data to have some desired result.
So dude wants me to change the way the email is formatted. Because there are "line feeds" in the email. Essential making it computer readable as opposed to human readable. I don't have a problem doing that but I'm wondering if he ever heard of regular expressions.3 -

Does the windows "optimization" feature which apparently is defragmenting in the background, and apparently "optimizing" ssd's differently of any use? Any experiences, optinions, thoughts?6 -
The company has gone completely remote. We are all working remotely. We have increased our communications and we have regular video calls to make sure we are all on the same page and that everything is going smoothly.3

As a web developer who focuses on accessibility, why is it so goddamn hard to get buy-in for accessible design?!
If you design to be the most accessible possible regular users benefit from an experience that works, for as many people as possible, in more situations than most test for normally!5 -
My biggest pet peeve is that too many developers don't realize that "regex != regular expressions", probably because of bad naming and bad documentation. It's easy to assume that they're the same, but most regex syntaxes today are actually at least context-free grammars, since they support backreferences.7

Just matched my passive income with my regular running costs (spotify premium, phone contract, internet). It doesn't really matter because I might as well pay the difference with money from projects or savings, but it feels good to have that all looked after by itself.

At some arbitrary future point, when things progress further into the realm of unreasonable demands from software engineers as a "regular day at the office", a huge inquiry into the working conditions and hours of devs will take place, and a major rethink into how software projects are handled as a whole, because the current methodologies, mixed with unshifting deadlines, clients and other worldly bullshit is unsustainable given the current industry climate.1

I have workt until 01.00 in the morning on a private project and I have to say Im fairly surprised at the result. Rewriting scripts to make them more wider and powerful is kind of what I like to do (even if I never end up using them for anything but one thing, and its only to procrastinate) but its a hell of a job cause I havent learnt to follow a standard or remembering my already made up one. Im coding 2 correlating scripts for 3 hours without checking how they work cause Im bad getting them into a working state. After I thought I was done and got rid of minor syntex errors, my expetions were super low and I thought it would handikap a funktion. It wasnt even barely working, it was regularly old working. Im feeling cautiously smart. 😎

I'm not gonna be greedy and unrealistic 🤫
1) good and long lasting desktop (equivalent or similar to i5 + 32GB RAM + SSD + Graphics Card 4GB + good cooler)

Why not just move the object off the screen?1 -

Ok, I'm fed up with this, just read something about android constantly monitoring your phone's location, now it's time to shut this up.
Would you please be so kind and share information on which alternative "privacy-first" OS I could use and how to flash my device? For all I know, it runs a custom HTC modified OS. I'm quite unfamiliar with all those things gravitating Android. Heard about Cyanogen mod but that's about it.
What about compatibility with apps downloaded through the play store? (thinking about Threema) I would also need compatibility with WhatsApp (yeah, sucks, I know, but hard to convince regular people)
Thank you all :)2 -
Typo3.
Especially when it comes to debugging third party (usually outsourced) plugins and implantations..
It's daz vile wild west over there, you never know where something is defined, but more often that not, some obscure TypoScript file.
Never have i been so grateful for xdebug & grep / awk combined with regular expressions.. -

But whats weird... Those people are fucking developers themselves!! Wtf?! I got a call from US team (I'm in Israel) and they wanted me to fix their laptop over the phone!!!!!! FUCK!!😕

So I have my little program which originally was written with intention to be useful for academics to deal with old fuck HPLC, but they got new one so I am not sure about it usefulness anymore. Basicly it reads HPLC report and take from it table and dilution number from name.
I spend like 2 hours trying to read all numbers from string which are between two given chars. Probably I could do it easier with regular expression or not being fucking moron or use sheet of paper to figure it out. Eventually I take traditional pen and paper and solve it in 10 minutes...

I mean if you are freelancer..
I want to get clients beside my apprenticeship, but dont know the regular payment for devs..
And yeah.. ofc there are so much differences inside the structure of something (websites, apps, programs) and the place you live.
Its more like i wanna know how much can you offer per hour for some shit.
For example easy websites, e-commerce, web shop, apps.. etc.
What would you seriously take for each hour of work? (some examples would be nice )
Thanks you, everything appreciated5 -
I have done a fucking awful thing and its that I started a project and I'm using Flask and SQLAlchemy but the part I'm stuck on is something Ive never done in regular SQL, so I cant even communicate what I want to do properly.
Time to binge some SQL real quick. -
My regex foo has gotten really weak. It took me unholy number of attempts to get ^\n{1,}$ right 😞.1

Since new iPhones don't include headphone jack port, instead use single Lightening port.
All that I can find on the internet is headphone jack to lightening adapter, but I want THE OPPOSITE.
I want to use my lightening headphones on regular jack port.
Why is that very difficult to find?6 -
Oh look, the code points each script_extension matches when using Unicode property escapes in JavaScript regular expressions.

Annnnnd apropos of nothing, I’m trying to learn Hungarian on the side for fun because I made a Hungarian friend. Forgot how hard language learning was!1 -
So a few rants ago I had Raleway used as a font in my (somewhat odd) visualizations for something I was working on, and now I've moved to using Roboto for heading/title elements.
Raleway's still in use for regular text, though. Both seem pleasing on their own, so I'm curious what it'd look like when both are used on the same page.1 -
On the contact page of my project, I want to send data from a HTML form.
What would you use to send it?
Just the regular <form action="/path/to/handler"> and cause a page refresh or use javascript (jQuery) for it and not cause a page refresh?
In both cases, a message will be shown on success or failure.7 -
I wish I could finish the game I have worked on (solo, on and off alongside regular job) for many years now. It's a callback to online gaming days of old (think BBS games) wrapped in a modern, nice looking package.2

More like a confession.
Had a task that involved invalidating a string if it contained more than five digits (anywhere in the string.)
"No problem", I thought. That sounds like a simple regex!
^(\D*\d?\D*){5}$
Turns out catastrophic backtracking had other ideas, and I revert to my usual "atomic grouping fudge that will hopefully work without me really understanding what's going on" of:
^(?>\D*\d?\D*){5}$
...anyone else shamefully follow this mantra, or am I the only one that hasn't skilled up properly on regexes...7 -
Task on freelancer : There are (too) many adblocker detection plugins. I want you to select one, test it at your local development environment (we will not provide) that it does the following:
- reliably discovers an AdBlocker
- does not interfere with regular ad serving (AdSense) if no AdBlocker is installed at user's browser
****- shows alternate banners (coming from our servers, so they look like regular pictures instead) even when AdBlocker is active *******
OKAY Now reality was that pre thought, pondered by PM ?
anyway adblocks seems doing Acceptable ads* which might be payed for ;)1 -
Nothing makes me - on a regular basis - doubt myself more than when I'm reading documentation and finding the arguments and variables I need, but not for the life of me finding the syntax or which context I should be using it in.
It's as if it's assumed to be common knowledge and I dread being "that guy" to ask someone about it. I feel like such a chump opening a new tab and googling for examples. -
For the past 4-5 years I was working with my friend or alone on multiple projects. Everything was on my head (from meetings with client to configuring CI) I became exhausted and for a change I agreed to join bigger team where I was suppose to be just regular developer. Now I know why I was working alone XD1

I have no face. If i choose a face, can i go back to having no face? I've made it this far and as others have agreed, a regular ol plumbus doesn't have a face. So i don't want to be stuck with a face. I really want to just mess with the color of my facelessness.2 -
My manager and coworkers kept calling me during vacation to add more triggers to fire some functionality. I had enough and made a regular expression matching, told them to learn regex and fuck off
-
Just interested about regular office
Do you have dresscode?
How do you feel about it?
How do you think, it's okay to have dresscode at all, or you would prefer half naked coworkers in red boxers rolling around on hoverboard if they get shit done fast and good?2 -
I'm easily a Digital Oceans fans, though I have heard horror stories, so I might set up a system to do regular backups.
I'm considering migrating my current server to something FreeBSD based, so I can easily do ZFS snapshots, and even code on my machine at home and just send the jail as a snapshot. Like docker, but different.5 -
Arghhhhh working with regular expressions (already a bad start) got it working on my dev PC but it won't work on the server.
The only difference is my pc is running PCRE v8.41 and my server is running v8.42. Can't find anyone else having the same issue on SO/Google8 -
YES! YES! YEEEEES! FINALLY!
I've been trying to get some systems to run successfully on docker swarm. Now forget a regular swarm, there have issues just getting it to pass CI builds, and Finally, YES FINALLY it passed!!!!
I now need to pass my self on the back... -
I love stickers but I also love my laptop lid clean. Back when I was a MacBook user, I did buy a case/cover in order to place the stickers and remove them whenever I want. Do you know anything similar for regular notebooks such as a Dell Inspiron?3

Alright, what the fuck is embedded systems and how does it differ from regular programming? I am not getting jobs because I know the languages requested, but I don't know embedded systems. How do I learn it? Get a Raspberry pi?10

I know another Apple iPhone post but hear me out on this one. So the new iPhones support fast charging right? Now supposedly/apparently when you buy an iPhone 8 or X it comes with a regular power brick and cable which means you will have to drop another 85$ to actually fast charge your iPhone... like what?

I'm not a regular poster here, or on most social media platforms generally. But I get notifications for the app every evening that shows a count for posts since i last visited, and it's been in the low hundreds lately.
Is everything okay? I'd have thought the pandemic would've seen people post more, but to see the exact opposite...3 -
I tried GTD, Bulletjournal, Strikethrough, regular to do lists, yoga, meditation... I still procrastinate2

Anyone using a paid font in their code editors? I have been using the regular old Fira Code on my workbenches, but lately I've kinda opened up to the idea of actually buying a font because I would use it almost every day. If you did, what made you do it?8

Need help
I recently applied for an internship and had the interview already so far it went great but they did request some code to see my logic in development.
Currently I'm working on a permission based user account system in php so that a single system can be used for both mods and regular users and should be quite easy to implement into a site build from scratch.
What I wonder is if it'll be interesting enough to show to them.
The company develops wesites, apps and educational games.
I'd love to hear your thoughts.3 -
There are times when I'm too tired I forget what I changed in the code so I write just "regular" in the title and nothing at all in the description even though it's very obvious i refactored large chunks of the code and added new ones... Regular riight

I didn't thought my supervisors face palm'd me due to being absent on a regular holiday.
I just want to take a break and rest. Waking up at 4am and work for 9.5 hours is tiring AF -

Is it good to join a startup paying average after it's seed fund orr should I join a regular company paying slightly above average?
Advice for a fresher(new grad)3 -
For regular daily stuff I use VS Code and it is incredible imo, for big backend PHP projects that come in from time to time I switch over to PhpStorm and for big React / Native projects or projects that contain multiple js frameworks I've been using WebStorm and I haven't been disappointed at all.
I got introduced to the latter two at a company I used to work for and I'm still using them!1 -
Studying a programming focused studyprogram.
Having to do minor software projects spanning about 2 weeks on average on a regular basis with regular classes in between.
Projects more often than not involve coding knowledge we haven't been teached prior during class.
Literally get told most of the stuff we needed for certain projects right after we already finished them and therefore already teached it to us ourselves.
Sitting in class bored because of this right now and will be probably again and again...1 -
Why can we deprecate a regular language like Python 2 (26 months can't come by fast enough) but yet it seems web development is impervious to the idea? If you want to make a website, you must use HTML, CSS, AND JS (or a transpiled language).
I get we use it for backwards compatibility but this combo makes web development so messy and weird, it's hard to understand from a newcomers perspective.
Maybe I'm just too stubborn to understand 🤔3 -
I've been wondering what laptop I would want to buy next year for uni, I was considering buying a regular windows laptop then downloading a Linux based OS, but I then discovered this laptop company called System76, which sells Linux based laptops out of the box. I'm trying the OS they've developed and I really liked it. Would anyone of you who have tried these laptops recommend it for me?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.6 -
Anyone here writes regular blog or has their own personal website to showcase their projects? I have been trying to do this for a long time but never really got myself started with this.. Any suggestions would be super helpful! Thanks!3

I can't get a regular shedule. I mean I try to plan my days but I either do a lot of stuff a few days and after that a few days of barely anything because I'm exhausted from doing so much the days before, I never keep up to my plans.4

The sheer excitement when you notice that the popup mail window in Google Inbox now open automatically when you paste a screenshot instead of just ignoring your paste sitting in the "regular" mode.

Gotta love git. Every time I look for something I don't know I learn about some new fun command like
git update-index --really-refresh
And yes, there's a regular refresh command as well :) -
My CS (theoretical foundations of computer science, specifically) professor is currently teaching regular expressions... Has been for three weeks. Same thing over and over. All of his examples involve using regular expressions to parse HTML. He just told us to write a script (using Perl-style regex) that would recursively find and follow link tags in various websites. Just... no...1

I've been wondering, is anyone else having problems with Windows 10 restrictions.
I have pretty much the same authorization as a regular user just as I do as an administrator.
I've had to uninstall countless programs and games due to authorization issues.
Anyone? -
I hate libraries and frameworks that make it extremely difficult to use them, making it so that you have to hook into them in a hacky number of ways..
Yuck, just give me a regular library that I can use.
