Started university of applied sciences to become a computer engineer instead of a web developer.

Met a lot of kids that are in the "computer studies = games + YouTube".

They struggle hard, but don't do anything to learn...

Then there's this classmate, the guy is 10 years older than me, is trying really hard, and struggles a lot.

I've been helping him out with assigns by asking questions, and he asks me how to solve a problem in general, not the assignments which is super refreshing to see someone that wants to learn.

Currently trying to help him "translate" the simple stuff into c++:

"well, take the list, look at position x and bam its done"

Try writing it like that!

And instead of "[i]" he writes "stringvar[i]"

The more time I get to play with Flutter, the more I am enjoying it. Google mentioned in their Udacity course that the best way to learn is to try and build an app that you use daily. So, I spent my Sunday building a UI clone of Facebook.

To learn it, first learn existing technology. Existing technology is here to stay, it's well-explained, and it's usually much simpler to understand. Then the rest will just click.

I'm an iOS developer and I spent my entire weekend trying to learn .Net for work.

0 programming knowledge starting to learn C. write a chunk of code and go to another room to make coffee, friend changes all semicolons with greek question marks. I spent the rest of the day trying to fix the errors while my friends where laughing like maniacs.

Rewriting the entire codebase anytime I learn that I was doing something wrong.

Rewriting entire functions whenever I see that my coworker coded bullshit on the fly.

In a nutshell, I should stop trying to rewrite everything!

Trying to learn C and thought a easy file copy was a good start. The program read the size of the file, reserved that size in memory, can copied data there and then to the new file. For some reason I never thought that the file might be bigger then available memory... Took a couple of BSOD to find that "bug".

It was like that:
- Show me your SQL skills, select from 2 tables, aliases, groups

- Ok, Now you have to learn Visual Basic .NET for getting this job, your first task is to create a simple calculator

My mind just exploded. Visual Basic?!? Noooo.... Really? I don't want to learn that Microsoft shit.... But it's good paid work so I'm trying it right now.

To be honest? I'm suprised, it's not that bad and I think that problems are not in languages, it's about cooperation, flexibility and enthusiasm to solve problems.

So don't judge programming languages and solve problems with them.

Well, I've been reading 'rants' in this community, and I'm amazed at how people discuss various softwares, languages, and sometimes even hardware!
I'd say I'm a noob. Can't even compare my 'coding knowledge' with what people know in this community, and I don't want to. I like that I'm now a part of this community. But I feel intimidated at times by the amount of things there are to learn! And I don't know how to start. I mean, we had a course on C for a semester, and I tried to build up on that myself. Other than that, I've been trying to learn web-dev, made a browser based game and tried to learn some back end. But I don't know exactly how to build up my proficiency with code, and solving problems, from here on out. So I would really appreciate if this golden community could help me out.(Not trying to flatter anyone. I don't express much, but all this is what I genuinely feel, and am grateful about.) I want to know how to go on about learning knew things in the realm of programming, and how I can apply it to solve actual problems. What language should I learn first? What will be valuable in this rapid-paced time? And some courses to help out?

After a while I noticed that this is not working as expected. Because the stuff I was trying to learn by just reading books were mostly practical and I had to see how they really work (like running the codes and so on)

I'm going through a KhanAcademy course learning about cryptography. I learn better by doing, so I wrote a script. It shifts bytes up depending on a random int produced by a high entropy pseudo random number generator using a sha256 hash as the seed. I'm trying to find information on the flaws with this method, that lead us to create DES, and then AES.

I hate having to learn stuff for school while actually wanting to learn other things instead. Last semester I preferred the latter, but that got me a bad math grade, which in turn means that I have to actually study for mathematics for the first time in my life in order not to fail the whole year because of one grade.

So I have to delay learning Golang and trying out the Spring framework.

It's been rough; I just don't like a lot of the high level programming languages and low level ones are often tough to learn to for someone without formal CS background.

Its good and practical but those who aim to fill gaps in the programming industry by trying to produce "programmers on demand" via a several month long bootcamp are complete idiots. Nobody can learn to develop a well structured application that's easy to maintain in a couple of months, either that is frontend or back end. We are trying to be engineers , not just solve problems.

In order for you to become well-versed at something you cannot study it at a distance.

In addition, most of the time the best way to learn something is to start trying to do stuff. If you wanna learn a language, start trying to program in it. Just go for it.

I'm trying to learn Dart and Flutter, so I started with the Getting Started materials.

1) Downloaded JetBeans
2) JetBeans refused to use my existing Android SDK so it downloads its own
3) JetBeans still doesn't work so I switched to Android Studio
4) Android Studio can't find an SDK and it crashes while downloading the SDK
5) Now Unity can't find an Android SDK

So our company wants us to start learning/sharpening our Python skills for work. We signed up for CodeWars and ran through our first Kata today. I'm excited to learn, but I don't have any actual experience with anything but HTML/CSS and super basic JS for just things like animation... I feel like such a fucking moron trying to work through this Kata. Because our manager wanted us to only spend like 15-20 minutes on it. I spent over 4 hours trying to figure out the right place to even start, even with reading documentation and trying to find similar examples online and after 4 headsmashingly long hours I couldn't even get an idea of how to tackle the problem.

Watching python videos to try and figure this out...

One day every 2 week, we got to spend the Friday just learning and trying stuff. No working on projects unless it's critical.
On these days, I feel like I learn much more than in the rest of the weeks.
Today I built (normally Python developer) a web service using Rust.

Starting to learn Haskell/type theory. I have put it off long enough and I hope this time I can get past the 5 minute intro/overview.

So far the only functional programming I have done is trying to write/use functions that take state in parameters only and limiting side effects (that I know of).

Finally started to learn Node.js and actually set up a small server with node and express and ejs, it honestly works nice but requires so many small things that take a bit to set up, while an apache server running PHP and Mysql would take me 5 minutes max to set up, but either way still trying to make that transition.

Trying to un-fuck a botched rebase of a months worth of work. It took me a couple days, but it forced me to learn a lot about git's best practises and gotchas. It also taught me not to keep a months worth of work on a single branch!

Learn to debug, breakpoints are your friends. Never ask someone help without trying yourself to debug your code.
Debug an existing code is, I think, as important than being able to write your own code.

Hello, everybody! Recently, I've decided to switch from Android development to web-development, mainly JavaScript. Ok, it is clear what to do and what to learn in frontend part. But what about backend? I have a some kind of a dream to learn Go. It is clear language it is a great pleasure to write on it, and I've started to learn it. In parallel I'm trying to study JS + Angular... Well, now I have some douts: is it effective to learn two different languages, which are quite new to me? Maybe, I should learn Node.js instead of Go? Right now it is clear, that this technology (node) is much more demanded. What path should I choose? To follow heart and learn Go? To follow mainstream trend and learn Node.js?

Trying to actually use tailwindcss makes me start hating it already. Instead of just adding a CSS style that I know without looking up, I have to look up the documentation to find a tailwind class name that contains the styles that I want to use. I still think it is great for beginners, but otherwise we have to learn two languages (CSS and TailwindCSS) instead of one now?

Once, when I was trying to learn Ruby on Rails I declared a variable called 'public'.... I got so many errors, that I had to start the project from scratch again. #fml hahaha

I am starting to learn C++ and I am trying it out on exercism. I am really at the beggining but when I make it work after so much frustration(based on devrant posts I guess that's part of the job) I always see people having shorter/better/more effective codes which makes sense to me but I wouldn't thought of it that way.

Is there way to make such thinking better or does it simply come with practice ?

A few weeks ago I posted about attempting to learn vim. It was hard to get started, but holy shit I'm glad I stuck with it.

I'm by no means an expert(pretty far from it), but I'm trying to learn new commands to use each day. I actually look forward to opening up my terminal and typing. I can say that in a few short weeks, I already feel faster than in my old text editor.

I started coding by playing really bad video games. After being suckered into using what allowance I had, I started hacking them to make them better. This led to hacking up MySpace... (ha) That led to actually trying out new languages and eventually unity3d/c# to learn proper coding techniques. I regret nothing!

Most of the faculty on my college's IT engineering department aren't exactly adept with Linux, despite the fact that 10/12 labs in our building run on Ubuntu.

Last week, a really great professor (who doesn't take any classes I can attend) from the Electronics and Communications department and I wrote some bash scripts to automate updates and so on, staying back after college until late evening to try to get the PCs updated.

We'll be trying to use SSH to update as many computers as we can remotely, and trying to learn to use Cron to automate the whole updating deal.
I'm learning this stuff on the side, since it's not on my syllabus at all, and the professor isn't even related to the departments that run the labs usually.

We're not getting anything for doing this, the head of my department (who has it in for me) has no idea about this, and nobody else is bothered enough to learn either.

I'm pretty familiar with SQL. It used to scare me, but now, years on, I'm super comfortable with it, and I don't really get why anyone would need anything else, generally speaking. Having said that, just tried to play with mongodb for a minute, and holy shit, that is some weird, weird stuff. I read all of the marketing fluff on the site, but I still am at a loss. Is it just that people don't want to be bothered to learn SQL syntax or use an ORM, or make a REST API, so they went off and created a weird JSON thing?

I get bouts of motivation and when I do I pick up 100s(clearly exaggerating) of things to learn which includes taking up new courses everywhere(literally), trying to be an open-source contributor, the most recent one is I've purchased a Ukulele (it's going good so far, well thanks for my $1 Masterclass subscription that I took last year!).

What the FUCK am I trying to learn now?!

My top lesson was realizing that I am a stubborn person, and that I was wrong to keep trying to implement unimplemented features past a deadline and that I need to understand when to give up. I also learned that I can't trust others to finish their part of something I start. There is nothing like seeing the entire backend you wrote be gutted by someone else because they "needed to learn how route handlers work by creating it themselves" and then seeing them not complete said route handlers.

I learnt a lot of my java background from Minecraft modding. I even went back a couple years ago when I was learning python and used the Minecraft python api to make my learning a little more interactive.

I'm​ always trying to find cool ways to apply programming to my hobbies, and hacking / modding / breaking the games I play it's a hell of a lot of fun and drives me to learn more

I was just watching a livestream YouTube video hoping to learn something new but the streamer clearly has no idea what he is doing. He was just looking things up all the time and failing miserable to find anything useful for the program he's trying to build.

I try to read about stuff that is related to what I am doing. Trying to learn about design patterns. The most recent example being learning about the Actor Model when I worked on Orleans Grains in a project at my company. That lead to learning about erlang and akka.
These things excite me. Makes me think about every problem I have ever solved. Drives me to think from a multitude of perspectives in the future.

So I'm about to graduate in a few days. What should I do now with the freedom I have now? I'm 21 years old. Should I work in a small startup to learn new things or a big company as my first job?
