I've never had a great experience working with designers, but this one might be the laziest! Props if it's for a friend and unpaid though.15
-
The highest data transfer rate today - 256 gigabytes per second - was achieved when the cleaner's vacuum cleaner accidentally sucked the flash drive in from the floor.8

That deserves to be here.
For me coding is best at about half of second 0,5l beer with ~5-6% alc. drunk at rate beer/hour. Did half of my bachelor's thesis during half of that second beer probably.

My wife is getting better and better each day writing code. And she is starting to really love the terminal too!
With this rate, she is going to know more GNU+Linux than me.

I don't know why @dfox , @trogus didn't want a username with underscore and I'm sure they must be having some valid reason for it. But how in fuck did this user have the guts to rate the app 1 star simply because it doesn't have a login with fb feature? I mean you can request for a feature but it's dumb of you to rate 1 star because it doesn't have a feature you want. This is true for any app not only devRant.

Dude: Come on man, Google and/or Facebook are not actively listening to us, I mean, we're not terrorists.

Million dollar app/service idea.
Automatically reply to all LinkedIn inmail’s with “I don’t have any experience with that on my profile”.
Even without any NLP I estimate over a 90% success rate.12 -
Useless Google Shortener API.
It allows 1M requests per day.
But has a max rate limit of 1 request/second. There are 86400 seconds in a day. Why are you giving a 1M requests limit then?5 -

The company I work for...
Has:
1. No CI/CD
2. SVN instead of GIT
3. Outsourcing to India (oof)
4. No Automated Testing
5. Uses Bugnet (ancient, outdated)
6. No clearly defined code standards
7. No real documentation on the code
8. Rubbish code
9. No desire to reduce technical debt
10. Poorly maintained DB
11. Poor outdated equipment
12. A useless PM
13. Still priotizes IE support (??)
On a scale of 1 to 10 how fucked is this company and anything they develop?41 -
Fucking hell. If I like your bloody app, I'll go rate it myself you fucktwaddle. Don't ask me to rate it just after I've opened it for the first time.7

I'm seriously considering never doing fixed rate projects for clients ever again. The conversation will likely go like this, though:
"How much to build my website?"
"$100/hour."
"Sorry, I don't think you heard me correctly. I asked how much to build the whole website."
"$150/hour"
"Wait, you changed the rate! Why won't you give me a fixed cost?"
"Why won't you pay me for my time?"
"Because I can get it done for a cheaper fixed cost somewhere else!"
"But how do you know that's actually cheaper?"
"What do you mean?"
"We pad fixed price projects precisely because we fear not being fully paid for our time."
"Oh."16 -
Saying that Sharepoint was coded by a bunch of trained monkeys would be an understatement and an insult to monkeys. Why is it such a bloody mess? 😡undefined i should run away while i can frustrated why do i have to deal with this piece of poop sharepoint7

Got this email from my manager today... a bit of a downer to my three day weekend!
I actually don't talk about work (in an indentifiable way), and I think most of the other points in their guide are utter BS (and unenforceable).
I am pretty open (about myself) on social media though, so feel sorry for HR if they've been combing through it! 🤣41 -

Son: I've done good investment in Bitcoins
Dad: What is the rate of interest in Bitcoins?
Son: There is no such thing called rate of interest in Bitcoins. Bitcoins are virtual currency. It's kind of money itself.
Dad: So you gave money and got back money? It's not called as an investment. It's called getting change!5 -
According to all the job postings out these, exposure bucks are pretty valuable. Does anyone know the conversion rate between exposure bucks and Stanley nickels?1

I have been working 9 months as consultant for a company thru a vendor. The contract will finish in two weeks, the company want to continue working with me, I can't be hired directly, should be thru a vendor. The problem is that today I confirmed that this vendor bill the company the double and want me to sign again with them for the same rate, I can't switch to another vendor because there is a non-compete clause. What would you do in my case? I feel like that squirrel12

once my professor asked our class, how will we rate ourselves on a scale of 1 to 10 on our knowledge of C language.
When we finally finished giving our answers, he told me that he'll rate himself a miserly 0.0000001, though he had brilliant knowledge of C.
I wanted to know if people here would give themselves similar rating or not?12 -
So there's a new team member in the project (me & him), he's assigned to make the frontend, which is great since I'm so proficient doing back. But he starts by doing backend tasks and the fucking frontend which is the most delayed part of the project is still untouched.2

Forgot to change code in my api for rate limiting, after development. No unit tests.. because who really needs that right? 🤦♂️🙅♂️🤷♂️lolololol
Long story short, API went to production eventually, and stopped working almost immediately. Rate limiting was set for 2000 requests in a 1 hour time period. Not my finest moment.. fml 🤦♂️ -

All company meeting to discuss plans to move office, and they want to change all of the devs to hot-desking?!
Would be interested in your guys experiences if any of you have done it, but I feel I'd be affected a lot as I only work 3-4 days a week.
I literally stood up and left the meeting, saying I'd quit if they did it. I'm far more comfortable and productive with my setup and space. Knowing my co-workers they might think I'm saying it for drama but I think I actually would leave, despite everything else being fine (except HR!).16 -

Just helped one of my professors set up a nginx load balancer with https, rate limiter, firewalls and everything from scratch. It feels so amazing to be able to put all the stuff I learn at work to practice. -
Oh I've had loads (and still have) of projects that got me to learn cool stuff! To keep them separate, I'll post some in different rants.
The thing that has helped me most over time (it didn't teach me cool things but it's very useful in general) is that, when api's have rare limits and you need/want to use them more often than is really allowed: you write your own alternatives.
I've especially had this with a geoip api's. Needed one for nearly every project but hit the rate limits with every goddamn service.
Wrote my own in a weekend and no rate limit hitting since then!3 -
I've just got in from bar* work, a little drunk*!
My last dev employer actually offered me my old job back, but as HR are so awful I said the situation was past that and demanded compensation. A nice payout agreed for me, for not taking it to tribunal 👍
Now for the new job! I thought working the night scene would be fun, but it's not well paid and the freelance I have is but it's hard to juggle the two.
I might have a break or a month or so doing this, then look for another job.

1. Applied to a company as a senior dev and sent them my prefered rate
2. Got rejected
3. Contacted recruiter and asked why. The rate seems to be not within their budget
4. Knocked down my rate by 15 percent, did their intro and technical interviews
5. Received an email with feedback that on some topics during technical interview I displayed senior knowledge and on others a very strong mid knowledge. Basically they are trying to gaslight me and presented me a final offer with a knocked down rate by another 30 percent this time. Bitch thinks if I reduced my rate I will do it that for second time.
And they are supposed to be US based company. Offering me a rate that I could get 10km away from my home lol.
Gonna ghost them for a couple days and respons them on Monday that I would like to proceed with the original rate that was quoted by them.

I saw a recruiter rant on linked in where they can't figure out why candidates won't give out current salary or they won't represent. If you have been working in and learning hot technologies in your current job but you know you can earn more why would you want to be represented at the lowest possible rate? I say give them an acceptable salary range not current rate. I am seeing why devs are moving toward meet ups and networking to get decent work.1

NDAs for me are a good predictor for a bad client or client relationship.
Doesn't work so well for larger cos, and it's not unusual for them to require one anyway.
I charge a fairly high flat fee for signing one. The people who won't pay probably don't need the NDA anyway and were going to be problematic.3 -

Are you willing to share details of your salary, or for contractors your daily/hourly rate? If you're not, that's interesting to know too.
Interesting to know;
- Currency (hopefully obviously)
- Location of work (or if remote, primary location of employer?)
- Contract type (FT/PT employee, contractor/freelancer)
- Job title (or general activity for contractors)
- Number of years in role/contracting
- Whether or not you would or have shared your salary with a co-worker (perhaps you're willing to share here but not with a co-worker)
- Gender
The 'Why is it soooo taboo to ask co-workers salary?' question made me think about this (https://devrant.com/rants/1557306/...)8 -

Customer: The quality of the software you’re delivering is going down
Me: That’s because we’re developers, support, and spend all day on meetings without mentioning that deadlines are defined by you, not the technical team
Project Manager: I have added more members to the team so you can deliver faster
Me: That’s just slowing us down because this inherited code is shit, there’s no documentation and we’re always in a rush, without time for a proper ramp up
Customer: *throws money to our faces* I’ll remove two weeks to this delivery so we can test it better

(In the meeting) "Yes everything seems to be progressing forward at an excellent rate, I'm seeing lots of synergy in the team."
Translation: "Where the fuck am I and what the fuck am I doing...?!" -
This happened when I was in the first semester of my study (I'm currently studying Computer Science).
Didn't understand anything, never learned to code before. My first "project" from my lecturer was to write a mini-journal together with two friends of mine (which weren't able to code either) about the link of VR use with the increase/decrease of the user's heart rate.
We didn't find any way to record the user's heart rate automatically and periodically. The deadline was getting closer but thankfully we found an android app that can be used to detect someone's heart rate with the user's finger pressed onto the camera. Sadly the app can't be used to record the data periodically (it can only show us the average heart rate). We told my lecturer (who is supossed to "guide" us here) about the problem and asked him for solutions.
He told us to "modify the .apk and connect it to a database".
At this point, we didn't even know how to make a database, let alone "modify the .apk".
In the end, we used an oximeter, recorded it, and listed the results manually. 😂2 -

I worked 2012-2016 for a big telco company in my country and there was this HTTPS webpage with an iframe rendering any url you passed over the ?url query param plus a header with the company's logo.
I was on a meeting with some friends in charge of social media and they found it for a user report.
Unbelievable 🤷🏻♂️ I remember I tried the page's url itself and it rendered a loop of the header with the company's logo 😂 -

my hard rate must be around 120 or so..
Too much energy..16 -
Any freelance/contract web devs out there.
What do you charge for hourly rate?
Interested to know what others are charging for php and/or ruby skill sets.3 -
The CI on Mac is broken. Again.
Next time I have a client that wants me to work with Apple, I'll double my rate. -
Is this survivorship bias or can people just not hold down a job anymore?

Would some Android devs please step up? At the rate all the cool apps are popping up on iOS I'm gonna end up with an iPhone again and I don't wanna go back to the ecosystem :/4

Higher refresh rates are an absolute garbage feature in warm countries.
My laptop switches to 300 Hz refresh rate, automatically, when I plug the charger in. And 2 mins later, my laptop is a literal oven and the fans sound like a fighter jet flying right above ur head.
My phone has a 144 and 120 Hz refresh rate feature but I never use it. I played a game of PUBG Mobile on 120 Hz and it made my phone so hot I couldn't hold it properly.9 -
Here’s a joke I keep remembering on DevRant:
Someone asks about PHP in Great Britain being €.
Others responding saying to make it go faster you put the actual conversion rate €(0.88)
LOL
I still crack the fuck up thinking about it1 -
Looking and fixing performance of any application is like opening of Chakras via yoga and maditation. One at a time till universe start flowing in harmony ie. Application start doing what it suppose to do at the rate that is acceptable to client.
Performance fixes is more like making application work at the rate which it's not written/design to do. -
For any UK Dev-ranter or anyone with knowledge of the UK TV - remade the film4 advert in pure CSS. Apologies for the quality and the frame rate in the gif!
Let me know what you think!1 -
Is there actually any frontend framework or boilerplate to just code and avoid messing around with old libraries, missing dependencies, no documentation? I'm seriously moving to plain ES6, it feels more flexible :/1

The pandemic Coronavirus is spreading at a rapid rate. But, we don't need to panic. Panic is more harmful. Stay calm. Stay Indoors.
We can #FightCOVID19.
Let's stay safe and keep others safe.😀7 -
My dear JavaScript Dev friends is this a good day rate for a JS developer?
At £220 a day, I think I'll stick with VBA for now if that's the case.22 -
Finally, after days through hell I finally made it to scale the wordpress sites at 6.5k req/sec even at a reasonable price.
Through, the data transfer rate will be sky rocketing 😂2 -
Working from home, the office is pretty unbearable in this heat.
Anyone else feel like conference calls in your underwear is a top work from home perk!5 -
Mind blown.
If google improves their tech at this rate, what's gonna happen? Is it for the good or bad? They are getting access to the world data. Random thoughts. -
What's a fair rate range to charge as a Junior Web Developer? If you're interested in why the hell I'm asking, I'm going to try out Upwork despite knowing it's a mostly bad idea.2
-
Dude, this two guys working on my team are really jerks. They don’t want to “waste time” helping the junior devs understanding the stuff that we sell. Sadly they’re the only people on the team that didn’t come from the outside.2

is there any site to upload our code and rate it from easy to hard and let other people review that code and suggest bugfix or learn similar to github but for all kind of people from beginners to professionals?4

Me always: never installing MacOS updates because something always breaks

Me today: *installs MacOS updates*

I was hired to work on an Android application written in java. Spent three months working on a project written in C++ instead. Needless to say I had no prior experience with C++ at that time.

Angular 2 has had a rough year. Team announced that they "won't have breaking changes for 6 months" the day of 2.0.0's release. I just started studying it. I'm concerned about the adoption rate at this point...4

With the inflation rate being 7.5%, your money will be worth 50% what it is now, in the next 9 years.
The only way to counter it, is investing in crypto.
I've already lost half my money this year.3 -
I'm so excited about containerization and also ML. I think those are my biggest nerdgasm stories at the time. So please share some useful resource to learn, I will do it as well :)2

80% of the costs for this POC comes from NAT gateways, so keep your VPCs internet access free until you really need it 😅2

Coursemates tried to convince me that putty was the programming language we were learning in our Intro to Programming class, not C. I thought they were joking, turns out they were dead serious.1

I just came across this strategy for the rate us section to avoid the lower ratings on the store.
When you click on rate us. It initially presents you with a 5 star with none filled up.
If you click on stars 1 to 3 then a feedback box pops up asking why I'm giving them less stars. Still letting to change them to 5 stars.
If I click on 4 or 5 stars then the app directly takes you to the play store listing where I need to press the 5 star again.
What do you think about this strategy?. Is it worth implementing??3 -
Fuck. Less than six hours before I'm in work. Time for bed! Let's see what that bitch Hannah from HR has to say when I'm back! I've stepped up my social media game🤣2

Just finished the night job at 5am. Looking forward to a good rest tomorrow! Not looking forward to correcting my sleeping pattern for Monday 😭1

If you want to increase your rate of progress, spend as much time as possible doing the activity you want to get better at. Volume leads to good things over time.1

Man, at the rate I'm going, I'll have to put a bug I found back in April on my new years resolution list...
Sad thing is, as we all know, new years resolutions never work out... So maybe this bug will never be solved :S -
I've seen a lot a of rate regards WordPress. I understand that if the client doesn't need a CMS WordPress is not relevant, but is there any overall better CMS then?13

How much salary should I ask for in Germany?
Specifically near Frankfurt, in aerospace sector. I have seen 58k gross yearly but seems to be a bit low to my liking. I am expecting 40/45% tax rate but not sure about that too.11 -
wow I have never seen a female developer pair programming with another female developer! Maybe something Is changing...
then again female dev rate at my company still is extremely low3 -
Got this build project of a big customer for the company I work for. Zero documentation and the guy manages this is on vacation and this customer is pushing and I'm on leave too until Monday, so everything is fine on x-mas eve 🎄

I was about to have a screenshare presentation of a month-long work over Skype...
Hours before the presentation I got bored and upgraded from Xorg to Wayland for some reason the universe doesn't want to disclose...
Tried to call a friend to check if everything is working and the screenshare feature was missing! 😑 I thought Skype fucked up, tried Hangouts, still not working, tried praying to saint Ubuntu to somehow please let it work one time. It did fucking not.
My gosh, 30 minutes before the presentation and I was preparing the whole environment on Windows. I had never felt so stressed in my life! 😰
Investigating after the presentation informed me that screensharing only works on XOrg, not on Wayland.
Worst last-minute decision ever. *#-##-:$;"+3($(!#@/)#9"+(2(#1 -
Travis CI is good. Yup.
Coveralls is good. Agreed.
Appveyor, codeclimate, Jenkins?
Okay, that’s too much. At this rate, no features are gonna get done. -
Rate your company / co-workers, how intersting the projects are! (1 to 10), and write down how long have you been working for them.
I'm really curious to see how satisfied people are with the social part of the company they work with.4 -
In ROBLOX, There is something called a microprofiler that is used for debugging. It is the only option for figuring out the source of lag (buffering). While using the microprofiler, my computer's frame rate drops rapidly, to as low as 20 fps.1

On Dailymotion, failed uploads count towards the 24-hour rate limit.
Dailymotion has a rate limit of somewhere between 10 to 15 videos (appears to vary). I experienced a glitch where I dragged 10 videos into the uploader (the highest number; years earlier it oddly was 22), and none of the uploads would start. However, it still counted towards the daily rate limit, immediately blocking me from uploading for 24 hours. I have a slight suspicion that this failure was deliberate.
Also, that rate limit is indiscriminate of video size. A gigabyte-sized 4K video counts equally towards the rate limit as a 7 MB 240p video.1 -
Hard to figure out the hourly rate at which you would be happy to return as a contractor to a place you quit. Quadruple regular rate?1
-
Hey guys ! I need your help for something.
I'm a student in Belgium that will become self-employed as frontend+backend developer (during my free time)
In Belgium and as student I will have no charge.
What would be a good rate per hour ? Some already suggest me 30-40€/h but as I'm free of charge others suggest 25€/h
What do you think ?4 -
"Why our email is filtered to promotions tab in gmail?" Bro, it's working as intended, bro. I know you don't like it, but it do be like that sometimes. Also, you have almost 50% open rate, stop complaining.1

I really love this boilerplate for starting an Angular, gulp, browserify web app. https://github.com/jakemmarsh/...

Is there a website that is equivalent to the mobile app store but with webapp and website instead? Something like a library of websites where we can rate and discover new, interesting, and useful websites.4

Anyone ever tried to fuck around with dynamic programming in machine learning?
My question is more towards rounding numbers.
Any papers on the impact of learning rate or precision that you guys know of? -
Question about hourly rates.
As remote EU based senior frontend dev (I do android native) how decent is 45usd/hour rate?
This is what a US based company is offering me. Im freelancing currently in a local agency and Im getting same hourly rate locally.
I work under an individual business licence which means I will be paying around 18 percent of taxes.3 -
Been building a Shopify app for 2 months now. Every time I look at the code, Im adding more feature. Fuck. At this rate I'll never have people telling me how shit of an app this is to make it better.

Have any devs done bar work before..?
I've always enjoyed doing things outside of work, and I work 3-4 days a week in my main job to create time for this. It's great for my mental health, and means I can optimise the main job for pay/good benefits and fulfil my "other needs" (stimulation/challenge/enjoyment) in other places.
The main things for me are dev contracting on the side or acting/singing, to a lesser extent travel, a bit of activism and law study. Just because 🤷♂️
Especially re: my last rant with *that* email from HR on Friday, I'm tempted to be a bit more strict about only doing three days and picking up something else.
Although I know the pay is awful, I really want to try bar work on the side just to do something different.
Has anyone else done bar work before?9 -
We are in a course for the scrum certifiaction. Most of my partners are more concerned about they can't take the decission about using scrum or not. Is so sad because os a really small organization.

$cash me outside, how 'bout that?
What do people use (I'm specifically interested in UK, but all answers welcome!) for P2P payments?
I like square cash, just so that I can say that. Monzo next, and the I guess direct bank transfer but only with a handful of people I really know. You wouldn't want to give it to stranger, and its a cumbersome process.4 -
-> improve a system
-> the system now has a >95% success rate (before it's only 70-80%)
-> business people still complaining about error (even tho it's relatively way smaller) :/1 -

How much does a freelance front-end web dev (entry level) charge per hour (average market rate)?
Skills: HTML,CSS, JS,Jquery
Experience: At least 1 or 1.5 years
I've googled and the results that came up are those before 2015/2016.
Thanks in advance.5 -
Recently created an app and uploaded it on Play Store. The download rate was great until a few days back. Suddenly I saw that the download rate was dipping drastically.
Then I read, "Download rates of new apps on playstore dips because of change in play store algorithm".
Wow! Thank you Google! Also, fuck you 😐 -
Which is needed more, resolution(1080p/1440p) or refresh rate(60-144hz) for a 27-inch flat monitor? My purpose is web development (Python, JavaScript).12

I do some freelancing on the site, make a bit of cash and it's a bit different to the day job.
It can itself be pretty dull or boring, but at least I can drop the client when the project's over and try to find something interesting.
Anyways, I'm logged into a client Google account to do some domain admin on a GSuite account. Logged into Incognito so that it doesn't interrupt my usual session.
Get a bit distracted and sidetracked, end up searching for porn... in Incognito... in the client's session! 💀
Quickly clear search history and hope that does it!
Tell me someone else has done this too??4 -

Quote from my teacher: "It can only be divine design that a mans vision and a womans beauty decline at the same rate"1 -
This sounds like a logical thing to do. A project to rate news providers.

Personal question what sort of wage are mobile devs contracting out at with around 6 years experience, day rate? Would be interesting to see the difference1

Nobody likes chatbots/conversational UI for anything other than chat, right?
I have a savings app with conversational UI. I press one of a number of options e.g. "Savings". There's this artificial delay after the network request has been made so that it looks like the app is typing back at you. Why???
You then get another limited set of options, or you can tap "Back". These options are supposedly as if you typed it back as a response.
I can get three "questions" (levels) deep, let's say to deposit cash, only for it to turn around and say that I've reached a daily/weekly limit? At each level there's this awful delay, and you already knew I wouldn't be able to perform the action regardless of my responses after my very first "message"!
Why is this good/popular? And the whole thing totally breaks if there's any loss of connectivity.
Stop it. Please. -
I think from next year hacktoberfest should do something like LudumDare does.
That is, the users which contribute should be able to review other people's PRs and rate them on multiple factors (0-5) like: Appropriateness, Contribution level, Spam level, Effort level etc.1 -
How to make money passively using money itself?
I only know savings accounts with interest rate. Any other ideas? (I don't know how to trade shares). Also, it's not a lot of money.19 -
Hi devs just a simple question for people who use cheat engine or any memory editor if your looking for information of a gun like fire rate don't you have to search ammo to find other things related to that object?
and say fire rate is a few values close
is that because when programming the game they put the values close to each other and that is called offset (1 value is closer to the base value)? -
What are the best strategies to make an android application popular and increase the rate of downloads in playstore.
Strategy I heard to best is by choosing proper ASO. Any other methods are there ?
