"I'm not paying for a website that's going to be free to visit, that doesn't make sense"
-A million $ idea guy28 -
It had been 13 days since I was last approached with a "great idea for an app".
Today, the counter resets to zero!7 -
How it usually goes:
1. Have an idea
2. Do about 3 of those things:
- sketch out a few diagramms of how it would work
- think of a name and buy the url
- estimate what you would have to buy and what it would cost
- make a project folder
- lean back, imagine life after the idea made you rich and famous
- write about 2% of the required code
3. Get distracted or don't have time to work on thr idea
4. Have new idea, repeat from 122 -
When anyone tells you some app idea you have already heard a thousand times, do you throw a OutOfFucksToGiveException?5
-
The worst laziest thing I've done while programming?
That's easy
- Have an Idea.
- Think about that Idea.
- Then go play some games, watch a movie...4 -
Example #1 of ??? Explaining why I dislike my coworkers.
[Legend]
VP: VP of Engineering; my boss’s boss. Founded the company, picked the CEO, etc.
LD: Lead dev; literally wrote the first line of code at the company, and has been here ever since.
CISO: Chief Information Security Officer — my boss when I’m doing security work.
Three weeks ago (private zoom call):
> VP to me: I want you to know that anything you say, while wearing your security hat, goes. You can even override me. If you need to hold a release for whatever reason, you have that power. If I happen to disagree with a security issue you bring up, that’s okay. You are in charge of release security. I won’t be mad or hold it against you. I just want you to do your job well.
Last week (engineering-wide meeting):
> CISO: From now on we should only use external IDs in urls to prevent a malicious actor from scraping data or automating attacks.
> LD: That’s great, and we should only use normal IDs in logging so they differ. Sounds more secure, right?
> CISO: Absolutely. That way they’re orthogonal.
> VP: Good idea, I think we should do this going forward.
Last weekend (in the security channel):
> LD: We should ONLY use external IDs in urls, and ONLY normal IDs in logging — in other words, orthogonal.
> VP: I agree. It’s better in every way.
Today (in the same security channel):
> Me: I found an instance of using a plain ID in a url that cancels a payment. A malicious user with or who gained access to <user_role> could very easily abuse this to cause substantial damage. Please change this instance and others to using external IDs.
> LD: Whoa, that goes way beyond <user_role>
> VP: You can’t make that decision, that’s engineering-wide!
Not only is this sane security practice, you literally. just. agreed. with this on three separate occasions in the past week, and your own head of security also posed this before I brought it up! And need I remind you that it is still standard security practice!?
But nooo, I’m overstepping my boundaries by doing my job.
Fucking hell I hate dealing with these people.14 -
You know your idea was shit when you ask a freelance dev to make it for you, get denied and then see your idea being ranted about on devrant...7
-
1) get an idea for a cool app
2) evaluate feasibility and execution
3) ensure accessible data streams and APIs
4) get excited and realize the idea is doable
5) see someone has done that exact thing and it's already published on the Appstore :/10 -
How to be a Dev:
Step 1: have a great idea
Step 2: start work on great idea
Step 3: read a blog about someone who also has a great idea and finishes it quicker than you prototype it
Step 4: check back daily and see them gloat about how much money, fame and shit they got from said idea
Step 4: rant about it on Dev rant to vent anger9 -
Yet another someone just contacted me about having a "great idea for an app".
That's a justified rant all by itself.7 -
open telegram
'hey guys i have a cool idea for a project'
"yeah thats a neat idea lets do it"

Idea Guy repellent:
Next time they tell you that they have a billion dollar idea and want you to build it, don't get angry.
Just point them to a code learning website and tell them if their idea is truly worth a billion dollar then they should spend the time learning the tech.
Then laugh as other idea guys come to them with ideas about their billion dollar apps while the rest of us are finally left alone.9 -
We just deployed a new version of our app on a friday afternoon and all developers are taking the next week off. Wish us luck! 😂6
-
Made a website respecting ALL OF THE THINGS my client wanted to have.
Client sees result :
- "I don't like it, it's not a good idea."
- "But that's what you wanted me to do."
- "Yes, but you're the programmer, you should have known it wouldn't be good."
I had told him it's not a good idea a week ago. Fml.6 -
Whoever thought huge open plan offices were a good idea needs shot in the fucking face with a brick-gun9

Working on a project called ...fire... on linux, when suddenly realised, that
`$ touch fire` is a bad idea4 -
That moment that you think of a way better way to do something than your initial idea was RIGHT BEFORE you implement / start working on the initial idea instead of after hours of work.
I could get used to this!2 -
So I got this message months ago, did a screenshot then, thought it's a good idea to share it with you.7
-
Playing sound on OS boot is just as bad idea as automatically playing sound on a website load. Yes I'm looking at you Ubuntu.
// it can be muted I know but.. who decided it was a good idea in the first place?11 -
Every single time a friend comes to you with a "million dollar app idea" because he knows you're in webdev6
-
If you come up with a great idea in a meeting to solve a problem, be prepared to implement it alone.4
-
Every single fucking time:
Developers: Maybe we'll do something nice for the users, like signing in with Facebook account?
Business: Nah, nobody is gonna pay for that and it sounds useless. We're good with current solutions. Just do your job!
half a year later:
Business: Hey, I just came up with the idea that we could have logging in with Facebook.
Also business: Wow, great idea!
Management: Here's your bonus for a great idea!

@dfox
Stack Overflow is full of abuntch of downvoteing dickbuts. The devrant community is so much more accepting of new devs, why not add a question section.
Down votes would only be allowed for spammers.
One the question was solved, it would go into the devrant question archive, Searchable by everyone.
Ik you have heard this one before, but it's Just my two cents.9 -
1. Comes up with a project idea.
2. Doesn't have enough friends who code to collaborate said idea with.
3. Abadons project.
All in that order. lol
I just want to build cool stuff. :(10 -
Boss just phoned me and told me of his great app idea. Says he wants the idea done and implemented by tomorrow 8AM. Meaning I have 8 hours to plan a project, design the app, and implement it.
Well, I'm boned.11 -
*gets awesome idea*
*gets another awesome idea*
*gets a third awesome idea*
*gets a fourth awesome idea and forgets the first one*
*gets a fifth awesome idea and forgets the second one*
etc, etc, etc.
that stuff can get really f*cking annoying.6 -
Our CEO/Boss thought up a new idea for an App
Boss: I got a new idea, i dont know what it is, but its very easy. How long you can do it?

When you have literally no idea how to make your homework project so you try to Google/StackOverflow it piece by piece to make a Frankenstein's monster code.
And then you still have no idea how to cobble it all together in a way that makes sense.4 -
Brought in a meeting a really good idea. One guy out of 9 sayd, that it's stupid and we could not use it.
1 week later the same guy proposes the same idea to the boss and team. Took all the merit and when I confronted him, he denied, that it was first my idea.
Fuck my life...2 -
Before I learned how to code and people said that you should print hello world I thought they really meant hook it up to a printer and print it on paper1
-
Me: Instead of doing X we could do Y, that would be better.
Boss: No, bad idea we keep doing X.
a few months later
Someone external: You could do Y
Boss: That is a great idea. lets do Y.5 -

I love* not being a web developer.
*: who the fuck thought that 31bit wide integers are a good idea5 -
It came to me, a brilliant idea, a simple solution to an everyday problem and easy route to market. Great, starts looking for domains and writes down idea in full in case i forget. Later that day, picks up 12 year old son from school, tells him my great idea. He told me how shit it was and why straight away.5

“Your idea is not valuable, at all. All value is in the execution. You think you are an exception; you are not. You should not insist on an NDA to talk about it; nobody serious will engage in contract review over an idea, and this will mark you as clueless.” Patrick McKenzie6
-
A friend sent me this message today: Hey, I have a great idea! An app that remembers your address so that when you are buying something online you don't have to type in your address.
Me: - (giggling)
Me: That's a great idea! I use it everyday. It's called Google Chrome!5 -
I know lots of you love stickers. But be careful according to this article.

Yesterday I was hanging with the guys from our Records dpt in the staff lounge. Their manager is a pretty nice talkative guy. Everything was going well until this happened..
Him: Hey you, I have an idea for an app. You can"definitely" help me, right? Or someone you know who also does the code thing..
Me: It depends. Just before you tell me about this idea, know that you'll be paying me or whoever will be doing this job unt..i..l *he interrupts
Him: Paying? I thought it was a one time or few hundreds of dollars. Why do I have to keep paying when you haven't finished the app?
Me: Did you finish your entire work this week?...but you're still getting paid next week, right?
Him: Oh crap, makes sense. Ok, how about I pay you the amount you charge then, that's it?
Me: See, you don't get it. I know once the app is done, you'll come back to me to fix and update things. When that time comes, you'll have to pay me again. And with the initial payment, don't just think you pay me and that's all... you'll...
Him: Crap, I have think more and come up with a plan for this.. nevermind, I'll keep you updated.
I think I made him sad knowing that, this sort of things doesn't happen easily.2 -
There are clients who always suggest an idea then after they suggest they will say "...again don't do this yet, its not a big deal blah blah blah"
Then the other day they will ask if their idea is already implemented.
🤦🏻♂️6 -
>coding something
>come up with a brilliant idea
>coding that idea
>in that time you forgot what you have coding in the first place -
That moment when you have an idea for a project and you spend all your time on setting up the environment, then your realize it is a stupid idea.
-
I got a dayjob in a company. I got an error. I cannot solve it and I am so desperate. So I go to stackoverflow, nobody answers. I post on git issue, but nobody solves the problem. So, I pay someone to solve it, like Hackhands.com to find a mentor. There is no mentor that can help. So I pay more, hired a peer, and finally a development team just to help me. They get paid only if they solved it.
But each of my folks repeat my same steps, asking on stackoverflows or github, and none of these help. So, they end up hiring their own friends and mentors. Their friends also end up paying (pay before problem solved) someone to help them.
their friends pay for friends of friends, then friends of friends of friends
And all of a sudden it becomes a giant MLM scheme.
And those people they paid for actually work for a company behind the scene which I am a founder of 😁
Multi billions startup idea, is it?4 -
Most favorite: Intellij IDEA
Least favorite: Intellij IDEA
I mean, once Maven and stuff are set it's perfect. But, damn, configuring it on a new computer...3 -
Back in 1999, when I was like 4 years old, my grandparents got me one for my birthday because i was quite intelligent for my age apparently, so they thought it might be a good idea. Today i m wondering if it really was a good idea xD
-
- have a cool idea
- the idea is way too ambitious
- think about it for a few days
- start coding
- lose interest and never touch it again after 4 days
Every time.4 -
movie idea:
Corporate take on Inception: A meeting about a meeting which discussed an email about an email. -
Biggest regret is not what I have done, but what I haven't. A long long time ago, in the early 90s, I had a great idea for a game, but somehow I never made it come true. A few years later, Maxis launched a game very similar to my idea, and it was called The Sims.4

So I have this idea of a potentially amazing idea but I'm so conflicted as to whether or not it is a good idea (I know it will probably never happen) but it's really hard to put it in writing for people's opinions and input on it...
Anyone else have these moments?7 -
Started working on my old idea about contact app... Looking for some good name... And found an app having 30% common features I was thinking about. :(
Not sure if taking patent is a good idea on rest of the features.5 -
I like the idea of having one hour interval between rant posting for letting more exposure for each rant.
It's a fucking brilliant idea.
@dfox chappeau my Genius.
thanks.10 -
When you have a great idea for an app, then find out that someone already done it and with the same name.
My idea is way better than the existing one though... I just need to think of another name.1 -
Have any of you pitched a directional or starting idea to bosses and have it go well? I feel like I'm at such a low "worked bee" level is have to send a lot of time preparing data to back up the idea. Also not sure if I should go to immediate boss who is cool but a little reserved about ideas like this or boss's boss who has more leverage to put an idea like this in action?3
-
So a question to all of the Java developers out there, am I the only one who can’t stand the idea of programming using eclipse or netbeans? I feel like Intellij idea is the best IDE that one can use8

Codes for 2 weeks
Naw this is a bad idea. Let's revert
While reverting gets distracted by another idea
The other idea also sucks. Let's revert and also finish reverting the first idea pls 😒3 -
A colleague of mine had a 'great idea' and started a crowdfunding project on kickstarter;
A microblogging application to host on your own server. The max amount of characters per message was 140.
The prototype was even built on bootstrap!
Such a original idea!!4 -
People sound like they hate their jobs here. What's your favorite part of being a dev? I like the idea of turning an idea into a real thing3
-
"Make a good version of something that already exists but has a dogshit implementation" is my current idea. And it's an idea that would be worthwhile but just plain annoying to do.1
-
Hey, here's an idea. Ethical cryptocurrency mining Adblock.
We've been talking a lot about mining as a revenue source and its ethics here, so that gave me an idea.
I've seen a lot of talk about blocking or boycotting mining websites.
Adblock has the "ethical ads" thing to allow reasonable ads to be displayed.
What if we made the mining equivalent of that: an extension that the user allows to mine with x resources, that prevents websites from doing their own mining, but which redistributes its mining results.
The website could just add a bit of script to tell the extension who they are, and while the page is on the foreground or streaming content, the extension would mine on their behalf.
This could also allow more transparency for the user: "your computer has generated x money for website y".
Wouldn't that be a nice middle ground? Does anyone know of a project like that?7 -
The difference between having a million dollar idea and having a million dollars is, unfortunately, a awful lot of work.8
-
please tell me who had the great idea that someone should put screen shots of a web page in a excel sheet to include as their "bug" report. I cant fathom that someone once thought this idea was "good"1

Nope, I haven't built a startup. I lack:
Product Idea
Funding
Motivation
Basically all of what's required.5 -
Been reading about this mess called C# 8.... WHY THE FUCKING HELL DO YOU THINK ALLOWING FUCKING INTERFACES TO HAVE DEFAULT METHOD IMPLEMENTATIONS IS A FUCKING GOOD IDEA?
Just Can't wrap my head around this stupid idea... Help me out here fellas...5 -
I fucking hate it when the manager comes up with an idea in his head. For him, the idea is the coolest because he itrated over it many times, but you shit fuck the idea needs to run when you transform it into code. Did u think about it?!
No, whatever it is, developers will figure out a way. Fuck off!!2 -
Soooo, thought I had the greatest idea in the world - fell sick for 3 days (minor fever NOT covid) and the idea don't feel too hot now
Plus im out of beer and I have to do actual work for a client :(2 -
Can we patent an Idea? I have my product A ready for launch. Company B claims that we have patent for that idea. We both trying to solve exact same problem using exact same methodology. How should I proceed? Any legal advisors here?5
-
So recently I saw a rant about a e2e encrypted social network and started to consider the idea, what do you guys / brother in code think about it2
-
Why is there a - 1 plus option? Just listened to a podcast by stackoverflow where they explained how they removed the down vote option on comments out of the idea that you cant be wrong on what you think..
Just throwing an idea5 -
I thought it would be a good idea to name my dev blog after a common runtime exception. I started looking up un claimed domain names. I guess stackoverflow.com is taken. Next idea... indexOutOfBounds...?12

Uni nowadays be like:
Lecturer says everyone should come up with an idea, find out how much it costs, figure out the competition, write a business plan, find out the development costs and indicate your value proposition. Best idea gets an A.
This is more like trading an A for a potential billion dollar idea.2 -
A continuation to https://devrant.com/rants/2629107/...
Again the idea is bird/flock of birds.
Thanks to all the people who gave their opinion last time around.20 -

I have a (imo) great idea for a small game, but I have no idea where to start or in what order I should work on certain features...
My programming skills themselves should suffice, I just have no idea what to begin with...
Does anyone here have any suggestions?12 -
Taking mandatory corporate compliance training that says what things I am not allowed to do...
BUT it's actually quite interesting because I never knew you could do these and well it's starting to give me ideas.... -
Mah noob wannabe language designer side here again...
...Idea: Automatic/implicit interfaces.
1. do you know a language that has (something like) this?
2. good idea or a bad idea? why?
3. thanks :)21 -
Me - Ooo I've got this idea ! This will fix this "No ones" problem in programming.
(Thinking this will change the programming for everyone)
Starts Coding......
Few minutes later ...Searching stackoverflow for silly syntax errors.
...Finds a 2 years old project from some guy, who already finished working on the idea and answering question as "This is a bullshit idea!, Never try to make something like this."

I have a mug that says, "Coffee is always a good idea" in a fancy ass way.

I'm looking for a hobby project during winter as I can not drive my motorbike during that time. Anyone has a good idea?
Maybe I could start with my old business plan idea, but I would for sure need people to help me.6 -
Feature idea... Allow a website link in your profile. I'd like a section just like the GitHub one...3

Is it a good idea to develop non game app in Unity? Asking because I got an idea for a app and I know Unity very well. Way better than Xamarin for instance.3

We were learning a programming language for implementing our idea in hackathon.

By looking at the prototypes and technical ideas which I fail to implements due to various reason , I got an idea.
I got an idea to have a kind of grave yard where people can bury their fail prototype and technical ideas and other people can dug them for inspiration or profits.
As the saying goes "One man trash is another man treasure."
I hope this idea of making a grave yard will not be "an actual fail idea"5 -
Yeah so I'm heading into Google hashcode without a single idea what to do, like what's a 0 based coordinate

In hindsight, sending WoL to an untested machine while 30 kilometers away was not a very smart idea.

I'm looking for an idea of a project to do over the next few days, if anyone could give me a project idea that'd be great3

Man, I think teaching is sooo hard...
it seems I can only start from two points: or I suppose the person is rock dumb and start sentences like "you know what top means right?"
(this is especially true because I'm not in a English speaking country and all of my references are in English (cuz since I learned it, I think it's easier to find good content in English))
or I go like:
"you only have to create a branch with the feature, the a class that implements the X interface to do this"
when the person doesn't even know how to make a function.
And now, I could convince the boss git is important and we should use it (I'm a intern). Result is: I need to teach git (git above all things, I have to teach git) to the other intern because the two interns will be responsible for taking care of the repos.
Not saying that I will fuck up, but leaving the repos to the interns, is this really a good idea 😂4 -
Rant story
Software engineering teacher gave me a bunch of topics to elaborate on. One of them was "the idea of black box testing", so I wrote down the idea of black box testing.
Teacher - this is very incomplete, you did not specify what types there are and for which systems they should be used!
Me- But it just says "the idea" and I did write down the idea of it
Teacher- yes, but it is very incomplete
God damn I wanted to punch her face. Some fucking teachers1 -
EF/asp.net core issue..
I've got a many to many relationship between idea and hashtag.
Currently i can POST an new idea with new hashtags just fine, but if i then POST a new idea, with the same hashtags, it tries to insert the hashtag again into hashtags on sql server, and fails since the hashtags should be unique...
What i expect of it is to just update junction table using the already created hashtag from first POST and create the new idea 😅question entityframeworkcore entity framework asp.net exam asp.net core project exams c# confused help21 -
A browser inside a browser? Wow BrowserStack is amazing! Whoever came up with this idea, take a bow 🙌

To avoid PMs and bosses on devRant, login should be made using GitHub. And only accounts with code on them should be accepted. And not just forks.2

Co-Worker (mechanical engineer): I have an amazing idea that I want to pitch to you!!
Me: Whats the idea?
Co-Worker: Let's make a social media app where you send a drawing to other people and possibly doodle on pics. The drawing or picture can't be saved and it's directly sent to people or a group.
Me: That's SnapChat.
Co-Worker: Oh...well my idea is cooler.
Me: *Rolls eyes* go back to work.3 -
So since Im new to programming, I thought it was a good idea to make a github. Was that a good call?7

anyone know a proprietary software which doesn't have an open source alternative yet? I'm looking for a good project idea.16

CSS is the worst idea ever.
Ok, maybe it started out as a good idea.
But now it’s just a big pile of diarrhea that nobody knows how (or wants to) clean up.33 -

What's the idea of people contacting you to offer a position, you make an appointment for a phone interview and the person don't call you at the right time and then hours later come with a random excuse. It happened twice with me already. If the idea is to spoil the company reputation, good job. '-'1

Whose idea was to name FaaS "serverless"? It's just a terribly misleading name which can confuse newcomers.3
-
What have you suggested at work which sounded like a good idea at the time, but now sounds like a nightmare?
I inherited a nasty old legacy c# desktop app a few years ago, I was a sql developer so it was a steep learning curve, but I’ve tried to make it better, fixing things as I go.
I had the bright idea of mentioning that I would look at starting to add unit tests etc.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I’m not so sure.3 -
How do you use youtube in china? Asking for a muggle friend in a foreign exchange program. I sent a link to proxysite.com but the lack of response makes me wonder if that was a bad idea without further precaution. I've never configured a VPN before and Tor is a very bad idea here.4
-
Could anyone just give me a good idea to develop? Just a simple idea you know, one I can make just some billions of it. Nothing more :) Thanks!11
-
Who has/had a colleague who after discussing an idea in a meeting will go :
'I just think of @insert_previously_mentionned_idea'
Like wtf... Didn't you hear me explaining the hole idea ?
Everyday I work my ass off to help the company forward and everytime he manages to turn things around like it was all his idea and he came up with it.3 -

Could you give me tips or thems, or an idea of what to do?
I would be grateful for anything :)7 -
even if it's a hosted language, making it dependent on its host's version is a very, very bad idea4

Any GNU/Linux tool idea?
I'm trying to find a project idea for creating a tool for GNU/Linux. My previous projects are available on GitHub and I'm open to any suggestions.
(I prefer to create useful CLI tools specifically.)2 -
Oh, there are hundreds that I've started categorizing them. They outgrew the storage capacity of my head / brain. I've tried a lot of productivity tools to organize them, but in the end, all my project ideas just remain ideas scattered somewhere unless I see it action and go like, "Hey, I had that same idea. I wonder when they got the idea. Was it before or after I had it?" In the end, I just console myself saying that for me it was only an idea in my head when those people saw it through execution and has a working product. The next step for me is to get along with them and collaborate and make that idea better rather than re-invent the same wheel again according to my idea.
Nextcloud is the biggest example of an idea that came to me and remained in my head and is still on a todo list somewhere. -
anyone wants to share a good app idea? i have good coding skills but lagging behind on brainstorming a product3

Not really a project idea per se, more of a very robust plugin idea or IDE feature (Jetbrains preferably), for suggesting better variable names while writing code.

How did you decide what you wanted to do with your career? I'm fresh out of uni and am looking for work but have no idea what roles or languages or software types I want to work in, only a vague idea of stuff I don't want and a vague idea of what could be nice. I'm also at a bit of a crossroads because I've applied to multiple very different jobs and have no idea which one to accept if multiple offer me a job (given that there weren't any red flags when interviewing).1

some people apparently like really low-quality shitpost videos made-to-order. (MTO is loose here, i get a vague idea of what they want and a source, and i try a few things and bounce them off the requester to get a direction, then do that again with a vague direction to narrow the direction, etc. until requester is happy.) I've made 3 so far, 2 have been MTO and i have no idea what the appeal is at all. In-joke manifestations? Power trips? Wasting my time? I really have no idea...2
