I was told during my initial interview that the book "Clean Code" is their Bible here.
And it's true. It's lying, unread in drawers and shelves all over the office.15 -
NEED HELP
An ant has entered my monitor and running all over the screen from inside. It's super irritating.
How can I get it out?73 -
I've been slowly increasing the size of my tech manager's mouse cursor over the last month when he leaves his computer unlocked. It's about an inch tall now and he hasn't noticed yet. Everyone else in the office does and it's the best thing ever.11

Base10 is interesting.
Did you know that any number > 9 has this weird thing where if you sub it's digits from the number over and over, it'll eventually become 9?
For example: 35
35 - 3 - 5 = 27
27 - 2 - 7 = 18
27 - 1 - 8 = 9
Try it with any number you like.41 -
Flirting! Life as a programmer has me irrationally attracted to nerds. A recent flirty exchange included something like this - "I'll build your environment, baby. I will build it with the finest, artisanally-crafted shell scripts so it can built and rebuilt over and over again.."
My friends think it's weird that all my crushes are neither good looking nor social. I don't think they'd ever understand.10 -
All those fingerprints... I am TRIGGERED. It's like he stuck his fingers into a philly cheese steak and then smeared them all over the screen.20

Her: Who are you texting over there?
Me: Texting my new girlfriend.
Her: 😒
Me: Jk, it's devrant.
Her: I knew it, you're texting that girl Devranta.2 -
"Google does it". I hate that sentence. It's always the beginning of an unreasonable expectation.
Perhaps if we had as much devs as Google we could do it too. But we are 2 devs spread over 15 projects, so fuck off.8 -
I got fired.
Worst job I ever had, they extended my probation period, called me "over maintenance", said my work was good but not good enough for the effort, If I take a lot of care doing my work then it's "over preparation", if not good enough then it's "not detailed enough", I don't ask enough questions? I must be unmotivated, I ask too many? I take up too much of other people's time.
Fuck them all. I hope they get a taste of their own medicine.10 -
I'm developing my "game engine" for over 2 years. 9 complete rewrite and 3 language change (c#->java->c++) but I love doing it. It's an amazing experience :D15
-
It's finished.
After switching between Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, Manjaro, Antergos and a dozen WM's I've settled for Arch on the desktop.
Took me over a week of trial and error, but it's worth the pain for the level of control you get.
Switching to Linux reminded me much of trying to find out if I liked text editors or IDE's more when I first started programming. I changed tools every day before I settled.
Screenshots of course. Now to actually get back to my JDBC projects before I start obsessing over how to get all my apps on the terminal. :D12 -
I was drinking my tea when I read this. Now it's all over my screen. xD
Thank you for making me laugh, James, whoever you are.1 -
After 2 years of working as a Linux admin, and over 6 years of using Linux as my only OS, I left my job, installed Windows and started a new, better paying and more perspective carrier as a .Net developer ... It's been 6 months, and I still miss the terminal ... I've been trying to get over it by using Babun and the Linux subsystem for Windows ... The thing is ... even though they are great, they are not as good as native stuff and the knowledge that it's not the real deal still haunts me :(
TL;DR: Left Linux 6 months ago ... still miss it to this day ... doubt I will ever get over it :( Feels bad guys22 -
Working with a client...the resident """sysadmin""" hasn't actually been a sysadmin since the early 90s, the last OS he _actually_ managed was SunOS 5 or something. I can't remember what he said. He hasn't kept up AT ALL with modern technologies/terminologies. He's convinced SELinux is a security hardened kernel. We've explained to him several times that it's not but he sees Linux and thinks Linux 1.0 from the 90s. It's downright embarrassing.
Now this would all be well if I didn't have to interface with him often, but the client WILL NOT give me access to their systems. So I have to go through him to get anything done. Which is over webex. So I get to watch this guy type (and mess up) basic commands over and over (he isn't aware of tab completion of any of the bash features that are super useful). So I'm telling him what to type and the delay is always just enough for him to get too far in the command to back out, so its like SSH-over-incompetence with a 500ms ping. It's truly infuriating.
Every once in a while he'll get frustrated enough to hand me control of his webex session, which isn't as painful but once again the delay is bad enough it's still a pain.
Best part is that he looks EXACTLY like Milton from Office Space. So thats one plus to this whole situation!3 -
I'm sure it's been said a million times before, and will be said a million times after, but:
*Right clicks website*
*Selects Inspect Element*
*Changes something for giggles*
...
*Someone sees over your shoulder*
"OMFG DID YOU JUST HACK THE INTERNET!"4 -
One of your rants is 4 away from a stress ball, but it's been over two weeks since the last ++, and you're just like:7
-
It's really fascinating how managers can act surprised over a critical prod issue especially after the whole dev department warned them repeatedly.3
-
Welp, time to ditch devRant
I don't mind green dots posting the same things over and over (and let's be honest, everyone had some of those complaints when we started coding), but what's been happening lately with spam and bots is just too much.
Thanks for the ride @dfox, it's been good while it lasted. Too bad I never got a dev duck tho, they were always out of stock :(18 -
When you realize the legacy PHP code you're working in has a class you're extending with over 2000 lines and you think, "Nope, this isn't a class, it's a university."2
-
I just discovered my server being brute forced over SSH by over 25 different IPs per minute. WHAT THE FUCK?! It's not even a public website... Now I installed fail2ban.35

Today 🙄
This dev goes "I connect using plain FTP over a VPN to update why can't you!?"
Because it's unsecure you fucking idiot.
His FTP server can't even do secure connections. Some how.
Guess I have a new site to take over 😏5 -
Working on my boss's code. Spent over a day trying to figure out why the array wasn't working to discover it's custom built to start at one.5

Do you know what's happening in Delhi right now? Probably the smallest devRant meet.
It's just me and ceee, chilling over chai!95 -
It's 2018 and folks are still stuck "collaborating" on documents by sharing them back and forth over email.
MS Word Doc created in Office 2016 will not open in Office 365.
THIS IS WHY GOOGLE IS WINNING!10 -
I've always just done CSS on my own by hand for every project because I thought it would improve my skills over time but now I've discovered Bulma with it's sass variables and responsiveness and things are just so pretty now, I never want to go back9
-
Well it's either me, myself or I who fucked something up or someone over at Facebook are having a really bad time right now...7
-
PM ordered me to not use encryption for customer authentication links because we want to be able so send same link if the user loose it. "we have to prioritize usability over security". At least I can tell future hackers it's not my fault..10
-
I started color-coding my bash scripts to more easily see when things start and end.
At first it was just some headers here and there, but now my terminal looks like it's shitting rainbows all over the place.
It's so pretty :36 -
Love really fucking sucks. It's the only exception i try but can't catch and i end up crashing in a bar alone and drunk. I finally wake up in my apartment just to do it all over again.14

It's Sunday night... Jira is emailing you because your product manager assigned you 12 tasks.
You're about to check what these tasks are, then realize ... my weekend isn't over yet!
Goodnight phone, goodbye g-mail, it's time for some more games and TV3 -
Countless times. Here is two:
- when he said he prefers an external hdd over git
- when he said that git is just a shiny new thing, we young devs use just because it's new
- etc4 -
- Another package from NY? More stickers?
- No. It's a ball this time!
People are starting to look weird at me over here...1 -
Adios Motherfucker!
Finally got that pile of misery finished. That simple ticket exploded in complexity and had quite a bit of scope creep. So so glad it's over. I mean, apart from code review and QA. But still. It's done!
Also: I may have been drinking already. Clearly not enough from the painful lack of typos and silliness. Gonna go work on that.6 -
I've discovered now that on VS Code when you point over a CSS class it shows you an example of the element it reffer to. 😲
I don't know if it's something new or if it's already present in other editors, but I found it now and I love it!5 -
After refusing to work over 40 hours a week and refusing to work last Sunday, today I was fired. It's been the 2nd time in my life and it's been the same deal: totally unrealistic timelines and totally unrealistic work expectations.
No big loss. Fuck that place.8 -
Boss slides keyboard over to you during conference call. It's slightly crooked. Trying to punch in credentials without looking like a noob... impossible.2

My team is quite international and although we speak English among ourselves, most people still comment their code in their mother tongue.
I have learn a lot from reading my colleagues code. Mainly curse words from all over the world. It's great.14 -
GitLab vs GitHub
Which one do u choose?!
I personally prefer GitLab over GitHub. It's awesome and it's totally free for private repositories unlike GitHub's costly plans!25 -
There's only one pro for this whole day light saving thing when you live in a country which doesn't do daylight saving:
You'll appreciate it better when it's over :-/
As if 10 PM meetings was not bad enough, now it's going to be at 11PM for the next 6 months 😭3 -
Installed Elementary on an old machine. Wouldn't boot. Started over fresh, worked the second time, did nothing different. It's pretty, but not sure if I'll keep it.12
-
Story when I worked as a 1st line technician:
Customer: "Yes hello, I'm trying to install Windows as instructed, but the installer is not starting"
Me: "Ok, have you tried pressing [button] at the bootscreen?"
C: "Yes, over and over, still nothing happens"
This was actually one of my first calls, so my co-worker stepped in to help while I listened.
Co-worker: "okay, so when you rebooted the computer, press [button] and tell me what happens"
C: "....okay, I think it's starting"
Co-w: "Great! I'll just wait until it's running"
A minute goes by, installer seems to be running, but then we hear a loud BEEP. It's so loud another coworker hears it from his desk, through our headsets. A moment goes by, and it BEEPS again. Then the sound begins again, but doesn't stop. It's like an air horn at full blow. We ask the customer what he's doing, but he cannot hear us over the constant beep. We're brainstorming what it could be, when he finally says something:
"CAN.. LET.. OF.."
Co-w: "WHAT???"
"CAN I LET GO OF THE BUTTON??"

I think we laughed the whole day1 -
When you and your colleagues fight over code intending whether it should be a tab or ''x'' spaces.
My reply: It doesn't matter what you use!! It's like eating with either a fork or spoon, as long as you eat, dammit!!

I'm the only frontend dev for a website with over 30M UU a week. It's constantly evolving. I'm scared that even when I have an accident and end up in coma, they'll still hook me to a laptop to code.7
-
Oh hey remember when you fixed my computer 9 months ago? It's acting slow again, can you come over to fix it while I judge you for problems that were caused by me.
-
Apparently it's all game's fault... Again. This article is not even fake https://bbc.com/news/av/...6

it's funny, i have been programming for over 8 years now but i still can't spell a single world if i try to type fast.17

It's so weird seeing a StackOverflow question I asked a little over 5 years ago get me reputation within the past 7 days. Did I really ask a good question back in high school when I was dumber than I an now 🤣🤣🤣5

Update:
The wasp is still alive.
I walked in today to find the damn buzzy mother-earth-fucker on the window. It doesn't have much energy now, and I didn't let it out because mofo got the chance a million times over to just leave me the fuck alone. So I just let it be. no idea where in the lab it is hidden now, and the robots will watch him all night, every night.
And you know what, I'm not gonna open the damn window for it ever again.
(Sat in my hoodie, wrapped, the whole day and was paranoid about it flying and sitting on me, but the war is on. He won't get out of this lab alive. )16 -
It's 2017. This person used an AsyncTask to get results from an API. During a hiring task. He has over 2.5 years of experience.20

I've always been critical of python as a development language because of it's efficiency issues and the fact that it's essentially pseudocode. However, today I had to reflect 200 coordinated over the line x=355 for a course lab and I hella didn't feel like doing it in my normal languages. Wrote it using python in less than 2 minutes. It might be a bad language for efficiency, but it's one hell of a scripting language. Sorry, python. I never fully appreciated you until now.15

Navbar is cool now, better than the older one. But can you please move this circle for creating a new rant to the right? Actually it's all over everything and really disturbs. And possibly also fade it Out when you scroll.3

Man they're coming today. I got another one.
An issue filed over an issue tags color being "too bright" and "draws more attention than other tags"
It's the "good first issue" tag you think maybe I did that by design?
Holy fuck.1 -
Every time I have to recall how to LaTeX, it's a huge pain in the ass. It's like learning to code in Greek (I don't know Greek). Happens every single time (it can be months before I need to use it again).
However.
Every time I finish my creation, I fall in love with LaTeX all over again.5 -
A 12-week coding Bootcamp won't turn you into a full stack web developer.
It's like a diet it takes time, it's not over in a few weeks even if you start intensive and really commit to it.4 -
That's it, it's over, I'm done! I'm officially a graduate! I have my paper and I'm out!
Goodbye preditory USA college related companies and practices I won't miss you!

hello devRant!!!
i've made a lmgtfy remake for fun over the weekend!
it's still not finished but i'd like some feedback

Me, before November 2014:

Unsavy guy calls: hey, my computer don't start.
*some testing over phone

Me: why?
Him: It's dark here. The power is out.

Today, I found this gem here in the codebase I've taken over:
#define BYTE unsigned char
FFS, use typedef, it's there for a reason. Solving the puzzle in the first comment.6 -
It's the FUCKING....
WEEEEEKKKKEEEEENNNNDDDD!!!!!!!!
I don't know about you lot, but it's felt like a long time coming since Monday morning.
Several concurrent projects pulling you in different directions take its toll.
Oh and to answer your question.
Yes, I am mentally unstable right now 🤪3 -
Over 3 years since my last rant... you might think lifes been like.... 🍹😎
It hasn't!
But, it's good to be back here with fresh new material. 🍿
Buckle up... "Where we're going, we don't need..." managers!4 -
It's maybe a cultural or language thing (or perhaps a generation thing!), but I've read some rants today where there has been a suggestion to shoot/kill yourself if you're guilty of some inefficient process or bad practice.
At the risk of over-reacting or coming across as humourless or stiff, it's not something I would ever say to anyone - light-hearted or otherwise.3 -
You know your expertise is increasing when you're working on your side project for over a year, and you thought the code you wrote in the beginning was so awesome and such a master piece. Now, one year later you realize it's shit.3
-
So haven't been on devRant in awhile but it's a new year and I definitely have some new goals. For starters, I'm building my first LFS system (on phase 2 of my toolchain atm), which I thought would be way over my head. Apparently, all these arch experiences have paid off xD I've always wanted to truly understand what went on under the hood of linux and maybe after going through this over and over I'll at least understand a little more.3
-
Am I the only one who procrastinates only on starting a task? Like, once I start the task, then it's easy to keep going till completion; but I can't freaking get my butt into the chair and start.
Any tips on how to get over starting troubles?7 -
Everyone and their mother has a JavaScript framework and the NEWEST cool npm module you're an idiot for not using.
It's like musicians and gear acquisition syndrome, coders love to have new stuff even if it's over-engineered, already exists, or redundant.
Hate dealing with tech hipsters 🙄 is nothing tried and true anymore?2 -
If a tree falls over in the woods..
And important dev work gets done and shipped,
And it's not in JIRA.. did it even really happen..5 -
Have you guys tried the 'recent' rants tab?
It's like going back to the early days of devrant when it was unusual to see a rant over 100++ 😍6 -
Allowing programming to take over my life; if it's not work, it's side projects; forgetting to live a life away from work in some form.2

There is this around 50 yo guy who seriously said in a room full of linuxers "oh, I'm already over with that Linux thing, it's for children. I'm using Windows now."
The sad thing is: he meant it seriously.3 -
If you can pick it up, it's a PC.
If you can't pick it up but you can push it over, it's a minicomputer.
But when you can't pick it up or knock it over, it's a mainframe.1 -
I'm absolutely terrified by my company... yes, these are fridge magnets. They're all over the place. It's not a tech company, but still... o.o"4

Sales person - I've got this bespoke job in, here's the spec *hands over a price of paper with a drawing* and I've charged 7 days of your time.

No arguments.. just me bitching over
var name_variable_int;
var someOtherNeme;
var ThisIsAlsoInSameFile;
that some guy thought would be nice to have in same file..
Just pick one, even if it's incorrect for the language, ffs!!5 -
Going through a WordPress site that hasn't been updated in over a year. It's so severely infected that even the Wordfence and Security plugins say it's fine. So I'm going through the file structure manually.
File by file, folder by folder manually searching for infected files. This is the most tedious thing I've had to do. But I'm learning some really interesting tips. One file looked empty and I almost missed it because the code had been tabbed over a few hundred times clearing it way off the the right of the screen.10 -
I haven't touched my laptop for five days (because I've been sick) and now that I'm better, I've been making so many typos and I can barely type. It's like I'm learning touch typing all over again.

It's tough when you want to do every fucking thing related to software development over a fucking night 😑2

Why do most docs have grey text color over a white background! It's just incredibly difficult to focus on. And my brain is like a potato to begin with.6

When people keep asking the same kind of questions over and over and you realize it's your fault for always helping them out so they don't learn how to debug on their own.
It's hard to do nothing but in a learning environment it's often the best.2 -

Anyone else sometimes feel that coding, programming call it what you want. Has taken over their lives and fucked it up!!!
Some times wish I never started this shit. But can't stop, it's like an addiction.7 -
Oh my God I fucking hate humidity
I've been without power for over 40 hours now. It's no big deal, but the fucking humidity makes it so fucking hot on my house and every fucking building.
It's about a nice and cool 70° f outside, but I'm still drenched in fucking sweat. Hopefully the power will be on soon.1 -
I started using Google Docs over the weekend working on my thesis paper for my CS degree. I've come to the conclusion that it's a suitable replacement for MS Office and my need for Microsoft's ecosystem. Don't know why I kept paying it for so long.7
-
Telstra and Vodafone Australia have released unlimited data plans for mobile.
With a base of40GB for $69/month and 40GB for $60/ month respectively.
When you go over the limit, it then throttles you to 1.5Mbps max.
It's a start, better than charging you heaps for going over, but they still have a way to go...6 -
I just took over a new project from a brand new client today. It's an Android app that he said needed some updates and refactoring, and he said it wasn't well documented but he would add some comments for me before giving me the code. He gave me access to the code today and one class in it is over 1200 lines long with exactly 4 methods in it... the shortest method is still over 200 lines long. There is one comment at the very top:
// Needs refactored.
... gee thanks.2 -

It's been over a year coding professionally as a frontend Dev and it seems like I have built my career so far just by knowing flexbox.
(I'm a flexbox wizard now btw)4 -
The reason I choose only devRant over other platforms can be seen through the sane reaction to the GitHub controversy.
It's good to know that, when your fucking job isn't on the line, people become normal.1 -
Dear colleagues. Please use your brain. Don't ask me the same things over and over again. It's really annoying... 😡2
-
My cousin needed quick website and I could never turn him down for the kind of relationship I have with him. When I completed the web, he was like "how were you able to finish it over the weekend?". And I said, "it's all magic"3

I thought Docker was supposed to make life easier.... Instead, it's giving me imposter syndrome all over again because I can't seem to wrap my fucking mind around it.10

It's been three weeks now that „SPRING“ is over and Nerdism won over our interior decorations. Neither wife nor friends and family noticed. But I do. Every morning. This time I made an impact to our decoration. This single time4

I currently work with a guy that constantly blurts out, "It's awful quiet over there."
This is intended for me to reply to when I'm in the middle of troubleshooting some code. I put both headphones over my ears, crank up some metal, and continue being quiet. I don't reward stupid behavior with a response.7 -
Bought a new tv. Over £1000 which is probably classed as mid range. However it's still a chunk of money.
It's my first experience with android since 2008.
It's still ABSOLUTELY SHITE!!!
Wish I'd gotten another TV now.15 -
Got a nice PR merged. Happy because it's on a popular project with over 4k stars. Ashamed because 50% of the commits are changing indentation from 4 spaces to tabs 😌1

Coworker who mostly works from home: "Who took my keyboard?"

Co-worker is in his office.
Co-worker whistles continuously "The rains of Castamere" from the Game of Thrones series.
I like Game of Thrones.
I also like the series' score.
But not the way my co-worker interprets it.
Because it's wrong.
Anyway, he whistles.
Sometimes louder, sometimes less so.
It's very out of tune.
It's annoying.
I can't concentrate, let alone code.
Co-worker goes to a meeting.
Silence.
I delete the bullshit I've written earlier.
Then, I get some coding done.
Then, I'm relaxed again.
Then, Co-worker returns.
Now he hums.
It's the same song.
Over and over again.
Again.
It's not that much out of tune, but it's still annoying.
I can't think, I can't concentrate, let alone code.
My thoughts drift to a certain Red Wedding.
I imagine it in vivid detail.
Strangely, it's a happy place right now.
I imagine throwing my screen through two fucking walls.
I don't do it, because the laws of physics are against me.
But the thought is enough.
I'm at peace, again.
... also, I got to leave early today, so I got that going for me which is nice.
(I already had to tell that co-worker *not* to whistle loudly in the cafeteria - you can hear it in a big part of the building. We had some important customers over and Office Management was not amused.)6 -
It's a tie between 3 things for me.
1. md5 hashed passwords
2. post variable concatenated into sql with no checks
3. admin login over http
sad thing is that all 3 was one website I redid a few years ago8 -
Today is a deadline.
I think this project is going to be a disaster in delivery.
But hey, at least it's over for me after today. Yay?4 -
I'm so happy to have quit my current job. Just a few weeks to go. To see my colleague take weeks for an task I would have done in a day or two, gives me enough satisfaction to stop carrying him in front of our boss. Just hearing him say "I haven't done this before" Yeah it's not like I told you over and over how it works for two years.4

Just discovered bulma.io! I've got to say I am completely in love with it! It's sooooo much faster than bootstrap and it's completely JavaScript free, you have full control over what parts of bulma you import and use, making it even faster.
I haven't had this much fun re-doing a front-end in years!
So what's your opinion on bulma.io (and/vs bootstrap) ? :)4 -
Hmmmm so the MacBook I'm looking at just got upgraded with a new CPU and better screen... Hmmmm if only the 16gb of RAM didn't cost so much!
Still think I might go for it, general consensus seems that it's the better option over a pixelbook10 -
Always double your level of effort estimates to any management over what it's really going to take. Always.2

Anyone else think it's crazy how over engineered it's become to render a website? Why do we need to invent the world everytime??3

So I finally switched from Visual Studio 2015 to 2017. As you can see it's going great so far :/
Took me an entire day to install it and to get it to compile the most basic program. On top of that it has already crashed/frozen up over 4 times over the past 2 hours.4 -
Why do marketers always tarnish the name of new concepts by turning them into buzzwords?
For example, "Cloud" is one of the most misused and overused words on the internet. If something has anything to do with the internet, it's likely to be plastered with the word "Cloud".
It's like "App" all over again. Anything remotely related to technology is called an "App" by it's marketing team and layman users.2 -
When you've got a demo to do over a lunch meeting, but it's still broken and your 2-person team only has 2 hours to pull it together..3

This is my first time working with Android Studio and I'm not sure if it's really building my project or just got stuck...
It's been over an hour and I'm still waiting.6 -
"I'm a recruiter for this company that does mostly finances. It's a very stable company. It's over a hundred years old."
That sounds nice, but I can't help but wonder the abyss of legacy codebases a company that old can have. Specially since it's not a dev agency.8 -
There's nothing like creating an account here less than 24hours ago and already have over 40++. It's good to know I don't suffer my pain alone.1

So I've been just assigned a code review. For a complete new feature.
It's over 20k lines of Code.
Time to quit -
Reach office early and you know what stack over flow is down god save me it's 15 minutes already some one please up it.
Bad start for monday.1 -
At the core, alongside repositories and IDEs, the trusty pen + paper is best for seeing bigger picture and fast note taking.
Although my chicken scratch handwriting isn't one to rave about.
It's changed from cursive to curseive over time...3 -
Freaking out over this tweet, it's making it sound like I've won something. I never win anything. Has that changed now??? 😲😲😲4

I can't work
I can't sleep
I can't eat
I can't code
I can't go have fun
I can't have a conversation
Because I've got a new exciting idea "💡" buzzing all over my mind all the time.
It's been 9 days already and it's still exciting, probably even more. I think that means it might be worth going ahead and realising it.6 -
It's been over a week now without writing a single line of code. Maybe this is a reason for being so sad?1
-
Just spent 4 hours working on a somewhat complex restructuring of my current project that, when boiled down totals about 50 new or modified lines.
While I realize that line count != productivity, all the testing and reworking over that period has me feeling like there should be more to show for it.
But then, there's the fact that it's working properly as it's supposed to now, so I guess it's a win in the end.1 -
Creating something out of nothing and knowing there's people from all over the world using my creation. One last thing is the developer community is so rich in diversity, walks of life, experience...it's truly awesome to get to know so many people who all program.

Checking out a project on GitHub:
> Using advanced condition-based AI logic, Compactor can skip over files that have been previously found to be incompressible, making re-running Compactor on a previously compressed folder much quicker.

I fell in love with CodeIgniter...
It's just a so simple but powerful and feature-rich PHP-Framework.
I like prefer CodeIgniter over Laravel!15 -
one of my friend is new to frontend dev.
and he's trying to center a div (text).
using position absolute and relative.
It's not working BTW.
We're communicating over text.
Must be loosing his mind.
He'll finally understand center div memes.6 -
It's been more than 3 years since ES6 came out.
Why are tutorials STILL coming out with people using "var" over "let" and "const"?
Var is dead folks.8 -
I have made 2 mistakes today.
1. Upgrading from Fedora 23 to 24 on a busy work day - it's taken over 2h now...
2. Trying to switch to a new TTY and launch GDM while it's updating - I now cannot see anything and live in fear of restarting.
Conclusion don't try and be clever with Linux, it will win3 -
I just had to explain a friend of mine, an "engineering" student, how to copy and paste text in MS Word over the phone for half an hour. It's 12:30 in the night and I am frustrated as fuck9
-
Unicode's biggest problem is that it isn't a streamable format. Given a section of a Unicode string, it's impossible to assert that the next character won't be an accent or zwj or other modifier. This means that it's impossible to convert stdin into an iterator over canonicalized Unicode graphemes.12

Literally the worst part about my boss is that he has to talk over everyone. I can't get a fucking moment to say anything.
Its really fucking exhausting.
I've just learned to not say anything because it's not fucking worth it.1 -
It's almost 9pm and I'm on the phone for over 4 hours because of migration problems.
I'm thinking of putting the phone on mute and escape...1 -
Does anyone else ever get so distracted/tired/pent up with other shit going on that they become a liability?
Last night I had about 5 hours sleep and have been worried over general UK politics lately.
Today, on a phone call to get support over getting locked out of our Apple Developer Program account, the call centre agent asked if we had the password.
I immediately replied "Sure! It's **begins saying actual password allowed over the phone**6 -
Okay, seriously, who invented merge conflicts? I want names! It's like playing Jenga with code, hoping your masterpiece doesn't topple over. I've seen more ">>>>>> HEAD" blocks than actual code lately.
Can we all agree to commit more frequently and save my sanity, please?5 -
Smell the lies and too much process. Learn how to smell it and stay the same. It's the best also look over political correctness8

PSA: If you do reverse proxying stuff, prefer unix domain sockets over localhost internet sockets, if it's on the same machine (and if it's forwarded over ssh too). You can even serve HTTP as a unix socket.
Unix domain sockets don't have the overhead of IP, so generally speaking, data will flow to your other process with much less overhead.
I've recently stopped being lazy at this, and it's worth it.3 -
!dev?
It's getting cold now over here and all I want to do is sleep... I have no motivation to do anything useful (dev, useful reading) either, just binge watch TV...
So wondering how do you actually get shit done (stuff you should do but don't have to do)? Maybe it's the food related as well?7 -
When syncing node_modules via nfs to Vagrant it's an even better excuse than 'it's compiling' - it literally takes 2-3 hrs and the ssd request is pending for over a month now. Looks like nobody sees it as an issue...1

It's not really an 'app' or a 'start up' but over the weekend I build my own personal website:
neilmunro.herokuapp.com
I'll link all my other projects into this site.5 -
i like getting drunk and shitting on all the overly smug idiots on hackernews. sure, they may earn 100x what i do, but it's painfully clear most of them are juniors and have never owned or operated on a large production tech stack in their lives
OOHHHH WOWWWW SVELTE!!!! LOOK!!! WOWWWW!! OMG VUEEEEEEE
its the same over and over again until we all die

How do I avoid carpal tunnel? Simple: my school bag (it's a laptop bag) usually has like 3 laptops in it plus miscellany tools and such, making it over 100 pounds usually. I also don't use a strap, so it's hand-hold only. It also helps train grip strength!4
-
Yea... it's not at all obvious I have my nose buried in a book and constantly tapping at the keyboard to run tests for how I might work out this problem. Now is an excellent time to repeat my name over and over, since I've been trying to ignore it, until I look up at you, just so you can show me that hilarious giphy thingy you found.1

Just started using ZeroNet(https://zeronet.io/) and it's a nice technology, well thought, but it seems like it can't expand itself or find it's way in the end. That's sad. I don't know if this will improve over years or be forgotten.

Testing a script embed plugin I am building on various random websites, and came across this.
Like, bruh; have you ever heard of a javascript map? Basic functional programming? Or even a switch statement?
It's the same statement, over and over again, but with different parameters. Even old javascript had enough tools to do this with at least a basic stench of "efficiency"11 -
Cocoapods - an easy way TO SHIT ALL OVER YOUR MAC AND PROJECTS. Jut add frameworks to project? No way, lets put hundreds of shit, projects in projects, run all over the place some piece of shit scripts written by who knows who and for what reason, it's always fun when one little misstep can ruin all your plans for weekend.2

"Falsehoods programmers believe about names" is old, brilliant and mysteriously missing from the search results. It's 40 points in all so read the full article over at https://kalzumeus.com/2010/06/...

Pet peeve #3984 - when managers / salespeople anyone else pretends it's just appropriate to "add up" years of experience.
"I'm sure we can solve this, the team have over 100 years of coding experience between them"
...yeah, that's not how experience works, doofus. Unless you'd really trust 20 people with 6 month's experience over a single person with 10 year's experience.6 -
It's not a new year unless you spend your first day back firefighting shit that broke over the holidays 🙃
-
Angular 2+, it's just so elaborate, and over the top complicated. On larger projects it easily becomes a mess. I started a new job where I inherited a angular 2+ project, that is terribly made, it's so frustrating. I now use Vue.js 2, and it's just so beautiful, especially single file components :D1
-
I'm migrating a site. I moved the host, I need to change DNS servers. It's protected with one time codes sent to an email I don't have access to. The guy who has the access disappeared without a word, it's been over two hours now. I CAN'T DO SHIT WITHOUT THOSE FUCKING DIGITS YOU FUCKER
-
Compile before leaving for the night, everything's good. Compile when I come in and it's all fucked up. Over 50 files changed and hit overnight.
14 hours later, compile successful 100%
That's how a day should end. -
Ok it's not the "worst" technology I've ever used, but it's undoubtedly one of the most maddening…
Auto Layout!
Powerful? Certainly. Intuitive? Not a chance.
There's nothing "auto" about it. Like shit, give me back my HTML and CSS over this over-architected shitstorm. 😠 -
Several JavaScript Frameworks / Libraries keep springing up everyday! After learning Angular, everyone is saying it's fading and React has taken over.
What's fucking wrong with Front end?!!15 -
I'm still looking for a job after more than two months. Never thought I'd say this but after all these interviews I'm starting to prefer live coding tests over take home assignments. You spend a few hours preparing by reading interview guides (the interviewers usually get their questions from these same guides) and then you either do well or fuck up but it's all over in a few hours and you move on with your life.5

iOS 10 pulls this 3D Touch shit on me and they're dropping headphone jacks. What's next? Vegan iPhones? Gluten free home buttons? Over engineered shit. Nobody wants 3D Touch. It's stupid.3

Ever tried explaining GitHub to someone? I swear it's like trying to teach a dog to ride a bike. You can try, but it's probably not going to end well.
Okay, rant over. Back to coding... and dealing with merge conflicts... and pull requests... and GitHub issues... sigh.4 -
I changed nothing but now it works.
It's been over one week since I started battling this bug. I guess I'm glad it's fixed, but how, and why?4 -
Just published my first composer package :) It's no big deal most likely but had to let go my excitement somewhere...
It's a package to jumpstart PHP projects wanting to use Gitlab CI by adding some defaults, and adding automated on commit formatting checks.
Main reason I created it, is because i was tired of doing the same config over and over again for my projects...
Anyhow if anyone were to be interested, here it is => https://packagist.org/packages/...
Oh and by the way, yes, it's PHP, and yes I actually do like working with it :)3 -
OK what the actual fuck is going on within this company.
TL;DR: Spaghetti Copy/Pasted code that made me mad because it's just a mess
I just looked into a code file to search for a specific procedure regarding the creation of invoices.
I thought "Oh this is gonna be a quick look-through of like 1000 lines MAX" turns out this script is 11317 fucking lines long and most of it's logic is written there multiple (up to 6-7 times). And I'm not talking about a simple 10 lines or something. No! Logic of over 300 lines.. copy & pasted over .. and over .. and over?! I mean what the fuck did this guy drink when he wrote this.
Alsooo 10000 of those 11317 lines is ONE FUNCTION.. I kid you not! It's just a gigantic if / else if construct that, as I said before, contains copy-pasted code all over the place.
Sadly my TL thinks that code cleanup / optimization is "not necessary as long as it works" like wtf dude. If anyone wants to ever fix something in this mess or add a new feature they take a few hours longer just to "adjust" to this fucking shit.
This is a nightmare. The worst part: This is not the only script that has shit like this. We got over 150 "modules" (Yeah, we ATTEMPTED something OOP-ish but failed miserably) that sometimes have over 15000 lines which could be easily cut down to 1/3 and/or splitted into multiple files.
Let's not start about centralization of methods or encoding handling or coding standards or work code review or .. you get the point because there's a character limit for one rant and I guess I'd overshoot that by a lot if I'd start with that. Holy shit I can't wait until my internship is over and I can leave this code-hell!!2 -
Project for a client, release date: tomorrow.
We handed over the project two weeks ago, for their QA to test everything.
Guess when they complained about having no access.
Hint: it's today1 -
A project that is used across our company with multiple clients. It's huge, over 2million lines of code and 116 separate projects. Not a single piece of documentation. Took me three weeks to track down where the authentication occurred with visual debugging and mapping tools.2

In regards to SO being down and the ensuing dev freak out.
To me, that's not a sign of devs using it as a crutch or being lazy etc, but rather a sign that devs are using it as a tool to resolve an issue they have not encountered yet. It's a sign that they are challenging themselves to find a good solution and not a hack, it's a sign they are learning, a sign they aren't just implementing the same project over and over again.
Like Martha Stewart says, "It's a good thing."2 -
This old man is making me upgrade his waaay to old iMac to Windows 10... This is our third attempt (so the third day I'm coming over to try and upgrade), it's working - albeit slowly - as he has upgraded to 16gb ram...
I'm a software (C++) developer -_-3 -
Would you say it's naive to assume that a Node.js consultant knows what 2FA is, how to clone a repo over SSH and how a .env file works?3

I've been waiting for over a week to get permission to add finished code to a part of our intranet site. My work have been delayed. Had to tell people to wait. Makes me look bad.
I have read access. It's nothing top secret. It's literally about some guy not ticking a checkbox for whatever reason. -
I once had a heated discussion with another developer over whether AngularJS is backend or frontend. For some reason he believed it's a backend framework.1

It's a shame how you as a freelance web developer complete a project and hand it over to client and you check it over and over and you never find the client use the project.
It hurts my feelings really really bad.4 -
The amount of times i've had to reinstall linux over the last week because some random command complete fucked up the filesystem, removed system apps, or whatever, is quite an achievement.
I think it's something like four times over four days4 -
My boss writes code like this:
def someFunction (someArg: String) = ...
Who does that?! A space? Da fuck?! And it's all over the code base. Whenever another dev touches any of his stuff, we correct it:
def someFunction(someArg: String) = ...
The way god intended it!8 -
I'm fucking annoyed by low contrast bullshit all over the web!!!
Seriously, 1.9:1 contrast ratio for text on a documentation site?
FUCK YOU ASSHOLE. STOP THIS SHIT. IT DOESN'T LOOK GOOD. IT ISN'T USEFUL. IT'S GODDAMN INFURIATING THAT I HAVE TO SQUINT TO READ SOMETHING THAT I'M SUPPOSED TO BE READING AND MAKE MY EYES BLEED!
It's not cool, it never was.

It's all based on the dev's experience. A beginner always faces trouble estimating a feature/project, but seniors don't, cuz they have the experience to get over the hurdles in software development.1

It's harder to grab hold of underperforming colleagues and give them a shake up, and harder to catch contractors working more than one job at once and doing poorly at both.
I'd still take it over a long commute and office work any day, though.1 -

How do you find the balance between just howing the junior how it's done (or end up doing it yourself) and giving them hints so they can figure it out on their own?
Not trying to be an ass, on the contrary, I just want to help.
But it's frustrating as fuck seeing all the little, simple stuff going wrong over and over and I end up just giving in and take time off my assignments to "help out" (point out the error/give the solution).5 -

Dependency injection is the most useless piece of crap ever invented. Convention over configuration my ass.
It simplifies nothing a good architecture and pattern can't solve. It's just the current trend but it's the hugest pain in the ass I've ever experienced. It just adds complexity to the project.
I think it's just a thing for masochists and lazy devs, but then why not sticking a huge dido up your ass it's the same fucking thing.12 -
Damn it's hard to alter code, on a big (side)project, that is pretty shitty... And it too big to start over.. :/
I'm just gonna run with it and rewrite the damn app piece by piece as I am writing new features..
It's by the way a project I kinda quit half a year ago or so. Now it's coming back., but better. :)1 -
Can this week be over now(), it's been an absolute nightmare in terms of development. I just want to sleep.1

Real question: what's the fear behind people putting tape over their Webcams? It's not that I don't believe they *could* be compromised, but why would anyone want to capture and go through hours of footage of me staring at my computer? My picture is on Facebook it's not a secret what my face looks like.18

What do people think of Vue.js over something like Polymer for making Progressive Web Apps?
I've used Polymer a lot (Angular 1 before that) and I'm not a fan of it's data binding. It is using a web standard though, so should have more components available than any library that makes it's own component system (like Vue.js). -
I swear it's been over a year since I've used a optical drive on a computer.

It hurts.
It really hurts.
To be fair, I'm sharing my phones wifi over Bluetooth, because I forgot my cable at home. So it's kinda my fault 😂 uni wifi is 👌 -
Though JS is a terrible language( as it's absolutely insane ), why do developers love it and why is it taking over the programming world?
JS is just like the C for web, but a bit weird.13 -

I am on Pop_OS! and it's working great for me so far. The package manager and actually good appstore is definitely a pro over Windows, and I really like the customizability.8 -

Me: you got it

Julia sucks!
It has similar syntax to Python and it's messing with my Python's knowledge.
Thanks to my Image processing subject's professor who preferred Julia over Python, because it's faster! and then he uses a package called Pluto (similar to Jupyter) which makes running Julia code super frustrating.1 -
So glad I decided to use Spring Boot... Love it's bean configuration for dependency injections... Also love the RowMapper interface that's used with the JdbcTemplate. No more redundant Exception handling over and over again and I can still get close to the metal with writing my own queries. DOPE.

Just wondering if anyone is noticing high battery drain since installing devRant Android app?
I've lost over 50% battery this morning and it's showing high use by this app.22 -
Not learning web quicker, it's now the most growing thing and there are so many technologies and frameworks and I haven't had enough time to go over them. However, the only problem is some of these frameworks last a little while and die out so it's not all that bad.1

So I was on github today and this teenager came up to me and asked what I was doing but I was too chill to answer at that time.
My screen read "Forking in progress" and now he's been saying it over and over again and thinks it's funny.
*smh*1 -
Apple denied the bugs that I reported , stating it's a duplicate of a future bug😂😂 I guess bug report id are on a rolling basis nd they jus said 1>2 🤣🤣 WTF!! over it they fixed the bug...heights of cowardly acts😕

*attempts to leverage browser caching to raise site speed
*Site speed suddenly jumps to 100
*Very happy for 2 seconds
*Realise it's because I've knocked the site over

I wasted 470 rupees ($5.6 USD) recharging on the wrong WiFi account, today.
😭 How's your Friday going? 😭
(I did ask Customer support if it can be refunded but they said No, it's not in the policy to refund these transactions).
It's a good thing I always chose 1 month recharge over 3, 6 or 12 months recharge, otherwise I'd have killed myself today.7 -
Anyone ever dealt with a workspace that takes a whole day to get working and then after that it's like a Jenga tower waiting to fall over? I would fix it permanently but there is way too much to unfuck without significant risk.

Learned Angular2+, I'm used to eclipse, I should probably install some Angular extension... Found a great extension in the marketplace, installed it... Found out it's not free and it's expensive as hell, and the best part, you have to keep buying it every year!
Why can't I just pay that shit once? It's not a service, it's a fucking product! I don't mind paying for some new features, but why the fuck should I pay for the same software over and over?3 -
I set up my first git for my internship stuff. I just looked at it and it's so disorganized and weird
anyone know a tutorial for learning how to use git that I can do over the weekend???3 -
This is a massive tossup between RandNoRepeat( from TI-BASIC (returns an int between 2 passed params but tracks what's been given from that range this power-on, meaning if the range is too low IT ENDS UP HANGING THE FUCKING CPU IF YOU RUN OUT OF NUMBERS and it also rolls over and over so it's slow as shit in general) or Python forgetting how the fuck if statements work.16

I've been at my new company for about a month. It's a startup that went from a dozen people last year to over two hundred right now. During the dot com era, that type of growth typically spelled disaster. It's crazy how many people I've met have only been at this shop for one to three months. Everyone is 100% remote, across multiple countries, and vast timezones.1

Hey guys ,
I just finished the first specification of a format I call CommandFile.
https://github.com/thosebeans/...
It's a configuration file format, largely designed after dockerfile with bits of TOML.
Can anyone of you, who is more well versed in writing specifications than me, read over the spec and check if it's concrete enough and if restrictions are reasonable?4 -
I don't even know what this is. But - it's over... but I can renew...
But what about my hotel discounts!?9 -
The only thing worse than realizing scope creep is taking over a project is realizing that it's only 5 minutes into the kickoff meeting >:/

What do you guys think of the Adobe's new "Photoshop" on voice technology?
It's innovative, but I understand it's benefit other than heavy potential misuse it can used for.
See the video: https://twitter.com/ziyatong/...
RIP voice over artists and impressionists, it looks like your job is gone.1 -
yo so wtf opengl doing over there
all I can find on "APIENTRYP" is that it's "macro magic that makes everything work" but it's breaking fucking everything. I remove it and it works again (well, kinda, i still gotta fix some typing horseshit)
why is opengl in shambles i just wanna compile gdi -
It's not GDPR compliance unless it comes from the GDPR region of Brussels.
Otherwise it's just a sparkling high latency CRUD API over Email enforced by law.3 -
Ok. As a tech reference tool
I'm hooked on chatgpt
You just have to double-check what it in outputs
Fuck you in people for shelving it over and over it's awesome3 -
I'm compiling an entire Android build from source. Even with 16 dedicated compilation threads, it's like watching paint dry.
It's nowhere near my early days taking over 24 hours to compile a Linux kernel... But it's still painful. -
The 1080ti is rated at a little more over 11 teraflops. GPUs with over 1 teraflops of compute performance was released in the early 2000's.
It's 2017 and we are stuck with fancy gen xxx cpus.
I smell a huge compute performance wastage.1 -
Am I only one with this? : Got new macbook, and every time it gets 100% charge immediately after unplugging it, I am checking a lot when it's coming to 99% and trying to make the battery consumption low. When it hits 99% , I tell to myself it's lost, ideal dream is over, let's use it into its full power. And typically adjust brightness, turn on things I was holding on. But it's changing with time :D Sometimes I feel like it's overheating, or too quickly discharging.4

Will the cocksuckers who create remote syslog viewer applications as abstractions over standard Linux tools create some Linux-like fucking abstractions. One can only learn so many different query langs(however similar) in his fucking lifetime. It's an operational nightmare ffs1

> pass optimization flags to the compiler for inlining small functions even in debug builds
> runtime performance is over 4 times worse
Ah, it's that kind of Friday -
Telling the customer it's not a system problem but their end users network problem over and over with proof and still making a fuss over it. What the hell do I do next?1

Node and other apps are so freaking cool but for small businesses it's a pain in the ass and just not worth implementing them over php due to them having to run like an app.
Plus cpanel and similar products integrate like hot garbage with it. -
Have you ever looked at one of your work projects written years ago and after looking it over just deleted it because it's obsolete.... Hopefully?

In the middle of a dev ops module in my final college year, and it's caused more frustration than all the other modules combined over my 4 year experience tenure...

Few minutes into work and I'm already hungry and sleepy. I had breakfast before I left home today. It's raining over here don't feel like moving from my desk.
