I’ve been thinking lately, what is it that devRant devs do?
So after a couple of days of pulling data from devRants API's, filtering through the inconsistent skill set data of about 500 users (seriously guys, the comma is your friend) i’ve found an interesting set of languages being used by everyone.

I've limited this to just languages, as dwelling into frameworks, libraries and everything else just grows exponentially, also ive only included languages with at least 5 users out of the pool.

When I was in 7th grade, my neighbor (a DoD programmer) challenged me to write a sorting algorithm for a hypothetical super limited environment (he said a satellite). It didn’t have any built-in sorting methods, had very limited memory, slow processor, etc. so I needed to be clever about it.

It took me a few nights before i found a solution he liked. The method I came up with counted the number of occurrences of each number in the array and put them in the appropriate spots in a new array. This way it only required O(2n) running time and 2n memory.

I just learned today that this is called the “counting sort” 😄

There is this service that I want to use (wont name it for privacy/legal reasons) and I have created a trial account which gives me a limited access to their apis. However the usage is where things are interesting.
The api access is restricted to some 1000 calls per trial account. But also they have a explorer option which lets to have the functionality as a web app like a dashboard and the explorer usage has unlimited access.

Now since I didnt want to exhaust my api limit, I let my service call the explorer apis instead. Is this ethically wrong or it is the fault of the service providers that they have such a big gaping hole in their licensing?

How I discovered I was a developer:

The company had hired a pair of computer science graduates and we had been commissioned to build a magento store. Weeks went buy with limited progress, and missing functionality was met with protestations from the devs about unreasonable demands.

I have in my head parts of a game, I'd love to build. A top-down space colonization game. You control various spacecrafts and build spacestations etc. to expand your control.
The catch is that you have limited direct controls in-game. Most of the "gameplay" consists of having your own piece of software running somewhere, communicating with the API and controlling your colony.
Similar to Screeps, but I don't like the limitations of writing JavaScript and uploading it to the service. I'd love for the user to have free control of what language to use. They just need to be able to create a TCP socket and communicate with the API

I am having fun building a captured wifi portal. It shows up as "Virus Distribution Point" as an open AP. If you connect to the AP it brings up a page that looks like the picture.

It does nothing except show the page. The page will eventually do some limited javascript animation to make it look like it is doing something.

Right now it is an embedded webpage. Strings in a source file. Eventually I would like to turn this into a product of sorts that would make it easy for someone to use for advertising/pranks. Man, what a way to start the week. Our mailserver went nuts (something about a Shellbot virus, I don't know) and we were forced to migrate to a new one. Spent an hour and a half renaming a method everywhere in a project from `feature_name` to `feature_name!`. There are a lot of constants, symbols, and other methods that use "feature_name" as a prefix (plus comments and spec descriptions), so was a little more difficult than normal.

Should have taken like 5 minutes with a proper IDE refactor tool. but noo, it was too difficult for RubyMine. wah wah wah. Stupid thing. Not even the search tool was useful -- it's limited to 100 results, and there were around 250 for that substring.

Just finished my third year of my comp sci degree when a friend found me a position at a very small startup. I was asked to build a web crawler to take job postings off kijiji and craigslist and place them in our database for our clients to find. It didn't take long to build (even with limited experience). It was pretty shady. I didn't think i'd have to deal with the ethics of a task so soon in my new dev-life! Luckily it never made it to the live site. After that they got me to work on their android app (not so shady)

4 years later i still work for that company building apps. It's still a small team, and i love 'em 🤙

After YEARS of research, I couldn't find a single working load testing tool

So this weekend I created my own. With blackjack and hookers.

I’m working at an architecture firm these days, so I don’t have many “dev” stories to tell. However, I’d like to share this anecdote to reassure (or demoralize) you all that the kind of nonsense we’ve all dealt with as software developers isn’t limited to the software industry.

I’ve been working on a project to build townhomes and apartments on vacant lots in an urban environment.
Space is limited, so the client assured us early on that they would be centralizing all the mechanical equipment (water heaters, air conditioners, etc.) in the basement of each building. We finally got all the apartments laid out and presented them to the client last week. During that meeting, we get a casual “oh, by the way, we need a 3-foot by 3-foot mechanical closet in each apartment.” Did the project manager push back? Of course not. Have our deadlines been adjusted as a result of changing requirements? Don’t be silly! Starting tomorrow morning, the team gets to feverishly search for an extra 9 square feet in each of a couple dozen different apartment layouts that are already “cozy” in time to meet our next deliverable.

Clients suck.

So recently I completed side gig from random freelancing site where I had to shadow troubleshoot performance problems over teams call with random Indian guy on his client's AWS account. Long story short you can autoscale new instances all you want but it's not gonna help if your FIFO sqs has only one message group ID. Sometimes I wonder how software development in (bigger) teams worked in the 90s.

Take the first Pokémon games for example. It was the mid-90s and the final product would be Assembler code that goes onto a cartridge with limited space.

I believe version control systems didn't really exist back then (Git & Mercurial: 2005, SVN: 2004). So probably people took backups of the chunks of code they worked on, copied around a stitched-together code, threw everything together at the end of the day, etc. etc. ...

I learned in my limited experience in software development (for the uninitiated, I am 16, started coding at 12), that you must want to learn it DEEP DOWN, because if solving problems is not your cup of tea and you don’t like thinking big, then GTFO lol.

I'm on the hunt for new and exciting languages!

I'll state the ones I already know:
Python, Haskell, C(++), C#, Java, JavaScript, Ruby, Rust, Lua, about every kind of Basic, some branches of Lisp, BrainF**k, assembly, Octo (Chip-8) and GML(basically JavaScript).

I've also learnt some styling languages:
Html, CSS, Markup and Markdown.

Some misc languages too: Regex and a runny bit of the Wolfram Language.

Also I'm kind of limited to Windows, Linux and Android, as I do not own any Apple hardware except I have access to an old iPad, so are languages like Swift still good?

I have a question for all you Linux pros:

My son's PC runs on Linux Mint. We wants to switch to the Pantheon desktop so we installed it (I think). I can't work out how to actually switch to it, though.

We don't have an option when we log out.

On a related note, we switched to Linux from Ubuntu because his old machine couldn't handle Ubuntu's resource requirements. I'm curious whether vanilla Debian would perform better?

(No, I probably won't switch to Arch, that's a little too much for my limited Linux capabilities).

We make a small server product with a web based admin system, as we were going to have limited customers who will use this (usually just the engineers) and this was not on the www. We dropped all support for all browsers other then chrome/firefox. No more IE/safari bugs for us XD

My dream project is to continue and improve my gaming website. It's a blog & community that's supportive of (but not limited to) female gamers. It's a positive place for gamers of any type to go, judgement free.

I have so many big ideas for the site, a forum, possibly user profiles, gaming quizzes and trivia, lots more ways to interact. I would love to do like a "find the right game for you" type of thing and have more time to blog..but I just simply don't have the time right now. :(

Afterwards, I look up what the way to go is how others do it and compare. Mostly, I don't adjust, it's just smth for next time. That's the whole hobby. Just keep going

My old mechanical keyboard broke, so I had to buy a new one. I'm Brazilian, so the local market for mech keyboards is either limited or very fancy (fancy as gaming keyboards).

So I got this amazing Logitech G610, which unfortunately is not sold with blue switches here, only brown ones. Very solidly built, well made, good extra keys and whatnot.

I hate my tablet...
It is a giveaway from my sister and it is a bit damaged. It's unresponsive on a straight line from the one side on the middle of the screen to the other.
It's an old tablet, so it has not much memory and it lags a lot, especially during app updates.
To "work" with it, I have to switch from landscape to portrait mode and vice versa, because many apps put dialogs exactly in the middle of the screen, on the unresponsive part.
But what I hate most about this situation is that there are apps that are locked on portrait mode and I can't access them... It wouldn't hurt much if all apps could rotate from one mode to the other!!!
I'm on limited funds for quite a while, so I'm stuck with it for now. Meh... ☹

Is dual booting between linux (specifically pop os) and windows 10 possible these days or do we have still the grub ignores windows and/or windows ignores linux problems?

We had a pretty big group-project.
We we're tasked creating a multiplayer version of "Labyrinth" in Java, using SE practices.
The problem was, that not all student that took the class were CS students.
So, me group consisted of 4 CS students , including me and 2 med-tech students.
Those two were nearly a dead weight.
They spoke nearly no German and only limited English,
Lied about their programming knowledge(non existent) and gave our profs false expectations about the final product.

I still can't imagine, why the uni thought they needed to take this class.

So working on the cutting edge of 3d scanning (think project tango) i feel like my boss and his client are trying to sell a sham.
The technology is amazing but very limited. They are trying to sell magic. The PoC barrely works properly by their standards, and the one they are trying to sell to saw a fluke in behaviour that made it appear as if the PoC worked like how they are trying to sell it.

Creating a Microsoft account was a mistake. They just spam your email constantly from different emails they own, and there's no unsubscribe button. Instead, email footer says “this email is a part of limited promotional email series” or some other BS like that. And you bet, there is no email preferences anywhere in settings.

This is why I use email aliases. Instead of bowing to those bastards, contacting their “support” and begging to stop, I just disable the alias I used to create their account. Boom, done. As a kid, I wanted to try new stuff. New programs, new games, new websites, new OSs. Those were the days when we had very limited and slow access to internet and cloud was still to be discovered. I had everything on my local HDD.

So one fine day I decided to try out Ubuntu on my Windows 7 Laptop.

I emptied a partition, burnt the image to a USB drive and booted from it. Installation went well.

Somehow I ended up deleting the logical partitions on my Windows machine. Not only I was not able to boot into Windows, my HDD was just one tiny partition. I cried my eyes out. That disk had everything I ever had.

PS: I recovered everything by restoring the partitions.

Today is my last day. Even thought it was tough sometimes it was a really good experience.

I worked with amazing people and had a little taste of IT limitation. Didn't had full admin access so I was limited on a lot of things I had to do but that taught me to say no to my supervisors when some things were not possible.

I'm very proud of the final result so do my superiors and colleagues. I'm really impressed by what I was capable of doing and that gives more self confidence. I know I made the right choice and I know I'll continue enjoy computer science as much as I do today.

I love it. It combines the best bits of C++, Java, Ruby and even some Python. It still is C ABI and C++ ABI (ish) compatible. It can do everything you need it to. It's not limited like Java. It feels cleaner than C. I LOVE IT. But I don't understand why there's not much going on about it. Is it because it's not 100% stable yet? I don't know. AAAARGH

Took a day off and came back to find my team and I were moved from frontend to backend (which I always wanted to be).

Erm not sure if this qualifies. Not so long ago I was tackled with having to read a device memory at a very high address in 32-bit linux process (kernel is 64). The 32-bit mmap is unfortunately limited to range of protected mode PAE so it just wouldnt reach that high. So! I wrote my own syscall in assembly that would switch to long mode first so I could use long registers and then I got my page and switched back :)

I've been writing unit tests for an existing project for a couple of months now. I'm not experienced at automated tests, so I'm not sure what's good unit tests supposed to be, but the unit tests that I wrote basically just confirm the flow that already implemented, which to my limited understanding of unit tests is supposed to be the other way around. The good thing is that I could catch some minor problems with the implementation such as not imported class used, the wrong variable used since the project is a rewrite of legacy code so a lot of copy-pasta, I also have to wrap some part of the code that interacts with the filesystem in a DI class so I could test that part.

Without any proper JS knowledge careeroptions are very limited... and i won't be able to pay my rent without a job :/

I think mine had to be when I was working with SQL and Lua. I was attempting to store some ints into the database but kept having it fail randomly. It was a 50/50 chance that it would succeed or fail. I tried reading errors (Limited on what I could see) after a while (Almost 3 days, since everything I could think of didn’t have issues and was completely lost) I realized the system another developer setup returned either string or int, thus it causing it to error out when I gave it a string. Once I added a tonumber statement, all my headaches went away.

So I live in the middle of nowhere and therefore I have a very limited choice of different ISPs. The short version of the choices is a fast but very limited in data size or one that works 99% of the time (I'll talk about the 1% later) but doesn't have limits on downloads. So I obviously chose the second one.
It works pretty great most of the time and I don't have any problems usually... The problem with "usually" is that the 1% of the time it doesn't work is all it needs to frustrate me. I could be downloading a massive file and around 70% the Internet decides to disconnect. It wouldn't really be a big deal if it wouldn't cause the file to get corrupted.
My point is that if you're going to share a big file, don't upload it to mega, mediafire, dropbox or anything like that. Just use torrents. They work way better for big files.

My high school computer labs all had Macs and SSO for the students. I found out that they had remote login enabled on all of them.
Using CSSHX, I could log in to every computer in a room simultaneously, turn the volume all the way up, and make them sing.
I never tried any privilege escalation, so my capabilities were basically limited to that.
Still fun as hell to freak out everyone in a room all at once.

So after two and a half months of waiting 30-40 minutes for every build on the build server, and trying my best to start refactoring the hugeness of our main solution with limited success...

I discover that 2/3 of the build time is caused by the Get Source step deleting and getting EVERY BRANCH IN THE MAIN REPO!!!

This was taking 15-25 minutes. Every. Build.

I changed the build definition to map and cloak the repo correctly, so now the Get Source step takes less than a minute, and the whole build completes in 12-14 minutes...

Idea: pwyw conference software where the call ends after 40 minutes if the host isn't paying €5 more monthly than everyone else in the call. I have two questions to WhatsApp

1️⃣ Why does WhatsApp store a copy of ALL images ever sent? LOCALLY? I thought it is a cloud service. Why would I want to keep gigabytes of data on a device with limited internal storage?

2️⃣ Why no proper multi-device capability on Mobile? Why no voice call on Desktop?

Bruh WhatsApp is so limited and awkward it is a shame it somehow got so popular

And yes, you thought if you don't like AngularJS you can easily switch to ReactJS. But guess what, every framework will use their own scripting languages like Jade, Blade, Typescript making it learning something new extremely smooth.

Putting aside my ordinary moral horror for a moment I'd like to comment on rust.

I have never seen a language that seems to have very limited use that so many people make a point of pointing out their use of so proudly and I have to wonder why.

It's a tie between HP Loadrunner, which is literally older than I am and behaves like it hasn't been updated since release, and ServiceNow, which is just so.. limited and forces you to think real fucking creative to get anything useful done, for me. Working in either is absolutely painful 😖

Tech people should have a codeword. So that I don't have to explain to every data provider showing off their own crappy limited analytics tool that "I do know what SQL means and I just need the ODBC user/pass, thanks".

Not a rejection per se, but a company I applied to just stopped emailing me after trying to arrange a day for me to come to the office and meet the team, following an informal phone interview. They dragged their heels while I was on leave and by the time they got back to me I was back at work and had limited time. They basically just ghosted me after that.

So im a massive ChromeOS fan and would love to own a Pixelbook but cant afford it at this time...

I've been watching a few late reviews and all they do is complain about the price and "limited selection of things" chromeOS has, just watched a reviewer pull an iPhone X out of his pocket.

A pixelbook has the same functionality as an android phone and more for roughly the same price, why can't people see full comparisons rather than just oh its not windows, really shits me!

Okay before you read on this is a stupid question!

So the most common response I get when I ask for advice is contribute to open source projects but theres some problems.

Because of reasons we had to use the reactabular-module in our react application. There were problems giving relative values to the table-columns so a coworker decided to install a resize-listener in the window and calculate the relative values itself when the window width changes.

But i have to defend the guy who did this. Given the other things to do and our (limited) knowledge of the css-display-attribute and the reactabuler-module this was the best thing to do. Or we just wamted to finish this because we already wasted hours on this.

I can understand why in technical interviews they use those algorithmic questions. It's an incredibly short period of time to assess someone's coding capabilities. BUT can't we find a better way to do it? I mean, I've never implemented dijkstra in a work environment, and I had never heard of someone that faces those kind of problems in a normal day of work.

I may be judging by my limited information, but wouldn't be more useful to actually ask to solve a more plausible problem?

For example, create a microservice that implements this API, send us the GitHub link and the API url.

I started my first job as a junior JS developer a month ago, and I'm quite overwhelmed with all the things I don't know. I feel like the knowledge gap is vast between my colleagues and me.

So what's the best advice you can give for me and how I can keep improving myself. I used to take many online courses before I started, but now my time is limited, and can't watch as much as before :(

New Office gave me an admin protected machine with limited access to users, but I have successful installed Android studio and sdk for flutter learning and Node setup for side hustles.

How can you finish you task if your workstation don't have internet access, your "internet" laptop - which your personal laptop - have limited/intermittent internet connection, and the db your testing is under restoration...

Can github (not google) copilot be run on a company server? Or some scaled down version?

I could see this being useful for a version that only parses the code the company wants it to parse. Like an existing codebase. I often find snippets on how to solve something in the existing codebase, but it is usually hit or miss.

- set timeline for feature for 2 weeks
- share timeline with everyone involved
- project manager calls and says it's taking too long
- dev adjusts timeline to 1 week
- project manager call next day asks for a new feature to be included in the 1 week timeline

What the f*** is wrong with these ppl. People don't seem to get the concept of schedules, timelines and organizing work. It's not like there is an abundance of resources (only few devs available ) with limited budget and salaries

That despite my skills and education, I'm unable to survive on my own, and am nothing more than a corporate cog with a limited lifespan.

So, I've been working on a new project, it's basically a java library/package/jar with a lotta nice gadgets and stuff in.

The current functionality is limited, but will expand more as time goes on.

Right now it's able to:
apply ARGB filters to images (changing ARGB values), save objects in files on disk(Serializer/Deserializer), send emails with working create/load/unload configuration-system which saves a user-config to a file, loads and works with it, but the most coolest thing...

All the summers a small local company that offers IT services, mobile and web development hires me to help, as in that time they have a peak of work and is when the employees takes vacations, so, this year my job there is to help with a web they decided to make using django, over it installed other framework and also installed a lot of libraries that some are in beta.

We have limited time and we are wasting it fixing all the fucking broken code, incompatibility between libs and other fucking problems because their lack of vision.

I'm fucking mad as we are not even close finishing the project and the deadline is near. I fear this will mark me for the company to hire me future years.

Every time a new hype thing appeared, I was annoyed, like "kids these days and their tiktoks".

But at some point in time, this pattern of mine changed completely. I don't know how it happened, I don't know when it happened, but now I experience... acute nostalgia?

I miss Elon Musk and his twitter fanbase. I miss tiktok. I feel like a time traveller who went into their past, which is our present, to experience the cultural landmarks once again, because their time here is limited, and tomorrow they will have to go back.

I miss my autism problems and mental health uphill battle. I miss avengers and thanos. I miss metaverse.

- you have limited amount of resources (churches, processors, RAM, holy items)
- when you torture it, usually it will comply but not in way you are expecting
