Morning conversation with wife.
As she puts a stainless steel water bottle on the counter
She: can you make a water bottle for our daughter before school.
Me: I'm not sure, does it have to look like this one, I don't have any training working with metals. But if I have full control over the design. I may be able to come up with something.
She: that not funny, why do you always do that.
Me: do what, that is exactly what you told me to do.
A little later.....
She: I'm running late, can you make sure "everything" up stairs is unplugged..... (She means her curling iron)
I can't wait until she comes home.........;-)21 -
Girl: you don't...see sharp
Me: I'm... Not a Java developer
Girl: I never said you were
Me: but why make that joke?
Girl: what joke? You hit your head on a beam tripped over a chair and missed your drink. You clearly need glasses
Me: *gets glasses* oh your not a girl 😳7 -
I can't believe that something I threw together in an afternoon to make my work flow better turned into something people actually use! People are opening issues and suggesting things. Never thought it would get over 2.5k downloads! 😮18
-
"Can you make it pop more..."
A moment of silence please, for the same fucking, irritating word that every goddamn Joe, Jim and Jenny uses for describing how a site should look. What the hell is pop supposed to mean, you want an epilepsy warning I'll put some popping lights and nausea inducing Nyan cats across your screen. You want it to pop more, sure no problem...
There's a window over there, go fucking throw your PC out of it.11 -
"Running the sample code is easy! Just git clone, make sure python, lua, gcc, docker and cuda are installed, and run ./install.sh. Easy!"
Me: Light 6 candles, sprinkle some thyme water with unicorn tears over my keyboard, start chanting an unholy hymn... shit... some compiler error from a library I've never heard of before.
Why can't these "interesting samples" come with easy pre-compiled binaries...18 -
Woman: IF you could make all the people in this forum brawl, I would go with you tonight.
Man: (Type) PHP is the best language all over the world!
The whole forum goes into brawl...
Women: You got me. I shall go with you. Do whatever you want. Let's go.
Man: Hold! Not today! I must convince them all!joke/meme very looooooooooooooooooong i suppose joke hey how long can this tag be? php wow a new guy7 -
Just who the fuck from apple thought its a good idea to make the FUCKING SCROLL BAR overlap, the FUCKING PROPERTY ARROWS, everytime i accidentaly hover over it? I cant change shit! I have to wait few seconds every time i accidentaly hover over the scrollbar so i can be able to FUCKING CHANGE the value!
Dear Apple Inc,
Fix your shit! We're paying 100$ a year for what? More bugs and toruture? I didnt sign up for this bullshit! Give us back some real quality products, or just buy the company Jetbrains and let them build the IDE for you instead.12 -
Client: I need html code for this search bar *attaches png*
Me: Ok. I will send you the code. HTML is just for front end views.
Client: ok. I will place an order, you can send it over *places order*
Me: *copy 6 lines of code from bootsnipp*
*make some changes*
*submit to client*
Client: Thanks but when I press the search icon it does not display the relevant records.
Me: *smh*4 -
Riskiest Dev choice...
Leaving a previous job, moving 1000KM (620 Miles) away with no job prospects and going absolutely broke.
This was all in the name of “I need a better job”, so what better way to force yourself to get one.
I’m currently in my second job since then and now make just over double what I was earning before.
Sometimes it takes a high risk to get out ahead.4 -
"An experienced developer is one who doesn't make any new mistakes, but repeats the same old ones over and over."
-
Once had a classmate schedule a meeting with me to "go over something" for a project we had together. (Not a CS class, but it was a general education class.)
I agree, make time on my schedule for this meeting.
I get there and they say "Yo I just wanted to let you use my flash drive so you could make some changes to the PowerPoint I started last night. Just get it back to me a few days before the project is due and we'll look over it together."
You asshole. Go fuck yourself.
This lesson taught me to ask what meetings are about in order to prevent this bullshit2 -
Can we, please, put some substance into our rants? Over the course of the last weeks the amount of rants of the type "%NAME% %SWEARWORDS%" has increased tremendously. You want tell everyone that (for example) Windows can go fuck itself? Great. But why? What is the story behind you're enragement?
Please make this place more fun to browse by sharing stories. Not just a random amount of names and swearwords.4 -
Had a job interview back where I want to move(2300 miles away), doing exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately it was for a senior developer, a bit over my pay grade.
First Interview: "It is above your skill level, but I like you. We will make it fit you."
Second Interview(technical): " You did super well! I will make sure to pass the good news onto the boss! I am excited to work with you soon!"
Response to my thank you email: "We decided to not persue you further for this position. We are going with someone who has more experience."
Why string me along?!?!4 -
Some developers get over-excited about using dependency injection and make further maintenance a nightmare.5
-
Am I only one thinking that Linux is kind ok cliche among programmers. Some of them brag about using Ubuntu over Windows like it makes you a better programmer. I have seen brilliant Windows developers and shitty Linux developers. My point is not that Windows is better, just stop bragging that you are using Ubuntu, it does not make you smart or better than others.20
-
Wtf y'all see shitposting and then you decide to continuously upvote it.
Look retards. Part of being a Computer Scientist, or whatever shit branch you are part in this vast field...is detecting patterns....if you see some dickwad shitposting the same shit over and over or using fucking retarded ass themes, or some jase shit then downvote the shit out of it.
Fuck me.
Someone can make his theme to be just posting ascii penises and you retards would upvote that shit to oblivion.
Stupid ass community.
"THeN lEave" <--- i was prob here before you dickhead....go suck on cock somewhere else.
Damn y'all are fucking idiotic...this what happens when we make retards believe they can be engineers54 -
Coworker: Hey, you made some changes over here in module X?
Me: Yeah. The old way was deprecated and we need to switch all of our modules over to the new way.
Coworker: Okay. I'm working in module Y now. When are you going to get to it and make those changes?
Me: ... I sent out an email and a message in group chat saying we all need to make these changes as we find them.
Coworker: Uh-huh. So when are you going to update this? It's blocking me.4 -
I decided to give my old keyboard a makeover. The top bezel used to be silver in color.
Dell SK-81253 -
So yeah. There is some problem on production. I'm working on it for over a day, and can't make it work. The bad method is 500 lines. The method that calls it is almost 1000 lines and its class is 5k. This is the second one. FML :(16

Got migrated from 3-nerd room to 18 person open office. Even call centers have cubicles, but noooo.
Who the FCK invented open plan offices?
I can see how the morons are rubbing their two cells together:
"Who on earth would like to have some quiet when thinking? Thinking is for nerds! Sales people make money and they like to yell all over the F!#!#! place.
Fck this. Turning in my resignation today.7 -
Me vs a government employee in India...
Me: You should have setup net banking on your website. I had to travel 20 miles to get to your office to make a payment.
Employee: Sir, we do have net banking enabled.
Me: I searched all over your website but couldn't find it.
Employee: Oh! Well, I guess it stopped working since it rained yesterday.4 -
I was in class and this one guy was having difficulty with Word's auto correct. The teacher goes over to help him and this is what I overhear.
"Damn artificial intelligence... We need to make sure that we're always the ones on top and that we never give them to much control!"
*teacher then proceeds to discuss the dangers of AI with the entire class*
The funniest part is, this was in my Japanese class 😂4 -
So the lady that owns the coffee shop at the office park I work in, is as obsessed with coffee as I am, and very proud of her cappuccino making skills.
As a result of our discussions about coffee, when ever I come into the shop, she takes over from the barista to make my cappuccino personal to ensure that it's perfect.
That is a wonderful gesture, but the barista make a much better cappuccino than she does.
I don't want to hurt her feelings, what do I do?17 -
When will Linux shall triumph over the desktop market?
I hate to see games and software being developed only for Winblows and MacPrison.
Why don't some company make a normie-friendly distro and heavily support it, same as Google did with Android, but for desktops?11 -
Okay, fuck me if everyone knows this but me, but CSS3 transitions supports letter-spacing.
So I was just fucking around and experimenting and I found that I could make a button whose text spreads out elegantly when you hover over it.
Fuck, that's cool.6 -
I got an alert for a job and decided to apply for it.
First, it forced me to make a new account on their HR site. Strike one.
Second, it forced me to upload my resume to then make me re-construct my work history from scratch because these stupid resume import systems never get anything right. Strike two.
Third, it requires me to provide a PHONE NUMBER for EVERY employer I've ever had!? Over a 26-year career? When half those companies either no longer exist or the people I knew phone numbers for, and their phone numbers, are LONG GONE? Get outta here!
Three strikes, you're out!3 -
Seriously, wtf is with the new "make-everything-in-javascript" thing?
JavaScript is a terrible language. The type safety, or rather lack of it, gives me nightmares about debugging. The standards are always different. It's way too flexible. Ugh.
I'm tired of all the awesome services that I'd love to use being centralized over Node and JS. I don't want to use your stupid fucking language. Who does?
Also what happened to that dart thing that was supposed to replace JS?11 -
SMM: Can you chat over the phone? Just want to make sure we are on the same page! I am not great with web lingo!
Me: Sure.
Me, internally: You're a social media manager. That's literally your one fucking job.3 -
Has anyone here ever used tinkercad.com? (for simulating Arduino setups, or other circuits)
Where can I find community content for circuits? They make it so easy for their 3D models.. But not for their circuits..
Also, can someone tutor me in the basics of circuits over telegram?
(for those of you whom have never heard of it, I attached an image ^~^)14 -

Hey guys I posted back in October that I was starting a hobby that I've always wanted to do making programming related videos and tutorials with a lofty goal of hitting 20 subs by end of the year and you all blew that goal in 24hrs! That sudden support really excited me to do more and I want to say thank you!
Now that it is released l really wanted to make a tutorial over the new Google Assistant API and it is now officially released this month. I'm hoping to make a multi-part series over developing for the assistant and Google home plat form. I'd really appreciate your support and feedback on how I can improve my channel and possible video topics you would might like to see.

Thank you for your support DevRanters as always!8 -
Let me ask you something: why do most people prefer ms word over a simple plain text document when writing a manual. Use Markdown!
You can search and index it (grep, ack, etc)
You don't waste time formatting it.
It's portable over OS.
You only need a simple text editor.
You can export it to other formats, like PDF to print it!
You can use a version control system to version it.
Please! stop using those other formats. Make everyone's life easier.
Same applies when sharing tables. Simple CSV files are enough most of the time.
Thank you!!?!18 -
#storytime When I was in my apprenticeship and learning to code I often did make the same mistakes over again so my colleagues and I found names for them and they just had to say 'potatoe sack' and I knew what was going on. It actually help to never make these mistakes again #throwback3

Non dev activity that has helped...
Erm, working in retail stores for many years before deciding to take a serious look at devWork as a full time job rather then a hobby.
Has helped make a great base knowledge to what customers expect and what sales people expect a platform to be able to do which just makes things easier in an over complicated environment 🤣1 -
Boss: We need to make a site but the content will have bolded words where the user can hover over to see more for each term.
Me: Ok sounds simple.
B: It's for a client and we aren't gonna touch it in the future so make it simple.
M:okay... so no JavaScript?
B: That means we are only going to send them HTML and nothing else. Here's a list of the images they have.
Me:......
Now I have to make about 80 pages of pure html with inline styles on each page.10 -
Got the ideal job right now. Over market salary. 100% remote. Mornings to myself until the rest of the team in another time zone comes online. Working within my competency with just enough challenge to make it interesting. Free products for being an employee. Only wish it came with paid health insurance but I do get a partial reimbursement.2
-
Idea was to make a little helper utility to be used once (only for myself, not client). But, I've kept adding layers of functionality over layers of functionality ... Long story short - this monstrosity (UI is bad, code not that much) was used for 10+ years (again, only by myself).
Finally, personal embarrassment was too big, so I took wooden stake and monster passed away. All related files deleted (but not before one final screenshot).6 -
Dear companies of the world.
If you offer customer support over Intercom, and the officer is a cute boy, I am gonna flirt like hell.
Keep this in mind.
Or maybe you do... maybe the photos are thirst traps designed to make us more forgiving... 🤔5 -
Is the software at your company so bad that it's a miracle that anything works?
Does it feel like this colossal pile of broken electronics from the past 30 years duct taped together and patched with multiple tiers of adapters, wires spliced together with scotch tape, and someone on stand by with a fire extinguisher?
Do you feel like getting your product to work is like how we used to get things to work back in the eighties? Not just turning things off and on again, but things like hitting the tv to make it work again, blowing into cartridges, and the feeling of pulling on the starting cord on a gas powered mower over and over again to no avail?
That is exactly what my company's codebase is. A huge amorphous, heterogenous pile of shit that somehow works and occasionally has to be massaged to make it work again. Fuck my life.3 -
I've been looking at the shittiest code today. Hundreds of lines saying
this.thing.otherThing.EvenAnotherThing[this.someFuckingIndexThatShouldntBeAField].theOnlyBitThatsDifferentPerLine.AlsoNoneOfTheNamesWereThisMeaningful
Over and over. They're all wider than the editor window. Clearly copy pasted. Just make a fucking variable Jesus Christ how do you expect anyone to read that2 -
I'm a founder of a small startup. We had a board meeting on a Friday, and Thursday night I sent a strongly worded email to the chairman and point investor, both of whom are worth well over $100 million, expressing my concern that we were undercapitalized and they were taking advantage of our youth and inexperience in order to make a quick return on their investment. The board meeting the next day was 2 hours of me getting railed.1

Mum: can you look at my phone?
*bunch of random shit pops up all over the place*
Me: your phones got a bunch of viruses on it or something. You'll have to get it fixed
Her: can't you do it? You make apps. Can't you just make an app for me to fix my phone?
Me: I don't really make apps, besides that's kind of impossible.
Her: so what did you go to university for?
Me: -___-2 -
This only took a couple of years to make.
a journey of @C0D4's life over the years on devRant.
Who knew taking a screen shot every now and again would pay off 🤗5 -
When you create your CV in HTML/CSS print as PDF and attach that to the job application, because word is annoying you with its lack of layout abilities.
I just wanted this bit of text over there --->
but no, I have to go make a text box, position that thing in an "absolute" way and have it still be wrong when exporting as PDF.
Really how hard is it to let me build a nice layout 😒10 -
"adding that feature is not hard, the devs are just lazy"... or maybe... just maybe development is more complicated than you make it out to be when you vomit your middle management all over it?
-
I love it how managers try to act busy by going through the same mails over and over again while waiting for a new one so that they can instantly reply to it and show themselves off as "prompt" and screw us, who have to actually do some work, about not sending mails promptly and they have like this one single excel sheet opened at all times and they just make one obscure entry whenever they get an update and WOW, some of them don't even know how the fuck you spell Avro (spelt it as avero, handwritten) and oh, not to mention waste everyone's time by asking a mundane question that other managers are so eager to answer, one by one, over and over and did I mention THAT THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HALF THE PRODUCT.
-
We get so spoiled with stuff at work that it is starting to show.
Way too much paid personal time during the week makes me lazy.
People bringin biscuits and shit make me fat.
Keurig machines all over the damned place.
Birthday celebrations left and right.
And much....much more and I love it.8 -
Ok. so my ISPs port 53 was DDoSed and I couldnt resolve hostnames anymore.
The only app that worked was Telegram because it (thankfully) calls an ip and doesnt use a DN.
The friends at @codrTalk were so kind to resolve like 20 sites for me by hand in order for me too 1) find out what happened 2) find hotfixes 3) download tor
Now, that I downloaded tor, im doing this over tor.
PWEASE @devrantron team and @devRant team
Could you please make it, that devRant get called over ip as opposed to by DN in your apps?
Anyway, thanks to those in codrTalk.13 -
With every new Apple product it seems that Jony Ive's job is reading the dictionary and finding less and less understandable words to be used in the next commercial to make the production process seem more and more complex although the result is the same device over and over again.

I feel JS has taken over...
The good.
Easy to learn, thus everyone knows it
The bad.
Everyone knows it, so npm has disgusting code that's used in prod.
Npm itself is still an unstable mess at times.
No one knows what it is to be a good programmer .
Dozens of frameworks every year since everyone thinks they can make it a bit better.
Classes still suck , no interfaces !6 -
Quarantine and unemployment gave me opportunities to do side projects, here is another one I’ve done recently and I think you guys will like it
It is an image mosaic that preserves features based on color gradient, and tries to use as many photos as possible instead of just repeatedly using same picture over and over.
Here is the link: https://github.com/txstc55/...
For those who care about my minesweeper game, I’m working on submitting it to steam and make it a free game.2 -
Failure is not the problem.
Problem is not admitting and accepting that you failed.
Problem is not learning from your mistakes.
Problem is causing the same damage over and over again.
What's worsens the situation is defending the dumb act.
If you cannot handle failure then not only you stagnate your growth, but you also negatively affect people around you.
Mistakes make you perfect only when you fix them.7 -
If you do this as a developer I will personally come over and make you eat all your money you earned with this scam cent by cent until you exploed and die.
Fuck you.2 -
For other just beginning web devs: spending hours fiddling over a bunch of CSS layout/formatting/animation to make a small widget look just right... Then showing someone your 500ms animation and they say "yeah and....???"1
-
How useful was my CS Degree?
I don't have one. I went $50k in debt trying to get one, but after shuffling schools and trying to make it work around a full time job...I took a break.
I've been a professional developer for 4+ years and worked in IT for over a decade.
I'm not sure if it's worth going back, but it sucks to have all that debt and nothing tangible to show for it.5 -
I love it when people make a mistake and break something on their website then act as tho the are losing millions of pounds every second like they are going to have to remortgage their house "life is over", if it's not fixed in 30 seconds the world will end!
Then you look at their website and you think they probably have about two users every week, and the website looks like it has been built by a one armed monkey. Delusional2 -
Everyone I start feeling like a badass programmer and I can take over the world, there's another programmer that comes out of the woodwork and make me feel like a noob. Why do I even try. Fuck your way of doing things.2
-
I came first in a 48 hour 4x person gamejam with a game idea in 6 hours with 3x people.
Some info: I had an idea as soon as the topic went live, told the team this is the idea (button masher), we are going to do it in unity (at the time I was working at a studio that used UE4.x), and I'll also make a custom controller using an old keyboard to make it more fun. Ended up coming first place and won a nice bottle of champagne each, and at no point did we over stretch. Nice clean project with a good night's sleep in-between. The team was me (dev), an artist and a technical designer.
That was my first start to finish use of unity and C#, and now I exclusively use unity and make games for Xbox One and Steam.3 -
Can we please stop using a file structure (YAML, JSON, XML etc) and just changing the file extension and calling it a new file type?
Stop trying to make your software/framework sound more complicated by saying this shit, if you use something, own it and don't try to mask it...
And mini rant over...11 -
Working at FB sucks. Managers talk make-believe . Gratuitous use of made up acronyms. Chaos chaos fucking chaos. I’m there only to pay my over priced rent.10

Email from boss: Have a nice weekend everyone!
Colleague A's reply: The weather is gonna be bad...
PM: Oh then A, you can stay at home and make sure the sites are working over the weekend!
5 seconds later boss replied:
Oh enjoy watching the sites then!
I can tell you two are from the same pile of turd *smh* -
So this phallus decided to make my day a night mare, I coded the Interface in separate class for each distinct services, He just told me to re write it to one class, before he don't understand it.
I wrote documentation, he said it is not professional. and now the fucking codes are containing redundancies.
For instance if he use my method, all he need is call my function once, and call it everywhere. But now the code is messy as fuck, calling the same thing over and over again which can be done by separate it to a function once, and reuse it.4 -
Why do some Devs feel the need to over complicate code to make themselves seem smarter?
No, we don't need a wrapper for a <p> tag that builds a normal <p> tag with a message your provide.
Use a normal tag! /facepalm4 -
I don't know why I am a programmer. I went into engineering because I wanted to make video games. I did controls engineering to make physical systems go vroom. Now I mainly write software to make specialized physical systems go vroom. When I was a kid this was not what I would have wanted to do with my life. My 10 year old version of me is standing over me looking down saying "Pathetic". I feel like I need to do something about this before I die.
I want to make a game system for RPGs that is similar to an authoring tool to allow me to make games with some very specific features. Think creation kit for arbitrary RPG games. I am thinking I could make the authoring tool a product as well. If people want to make their own games. But I also want to make moddable RPG games using the authoring tool. I want to give people the ability to mod the game. So I am struggling with how to allow modding and sell an authoring tool. License to distribute unique games? I dunno, maybe I will just keep it as a modding tool for the games I make. I feel like good quality games are moddable. I hardly want to play anything that isn't.7 -
Software:
added a "Coke zero" to my order and the app asked to show my ID to the delivery to make sure I'm over 18.

Ordered a milkshake instead. More appropriate for my (mental) age.15 -
I may have over delivered my service to this first customer i got.
It doesn't help that pricing was dirt cheap and i over promised in a bid to make it attractive.
But in my hurry to please the client, I've been feeling so much stress since last 24 hrs. Dealing with customers suck. I hate this.
They can be little dumb and doesn't think much before blaming you if something's not working as expected.
I hate this feeling and now i remember why my initial business model was designed such that I wouldn't have to deal with clients.
But somewhere along the way, i forgot about that. :/
I wish I could get rid of this customer.3 -
i got my account perma-locked on twitter over a joke the other day and the only presented option was to delete my account. Apparently you talk about cool shit all day and 2 people see it, but you make a joke about a bad neighborhood and 700 people flag literally every tweet and reply you've ever made.13
-
The moment when it's absolutely quiet in the office and you accidentally make a weird sound with your mouth and then make the sound over and over again so co-workers don't think you farted......6
-
So today I spent the whole day at work in a website to make it go full responsive. When I finished, the PM told me "Forget about these and those screen sizes, make everything over 1024px a desktop view". There are tablets with screen bigger than just 1024px... Anyway, I got a little mad because I spent the WHOLE day working with those tablets that are bigger than 1024 just to get a " Forget about these and those".
Fine, I'm fine now... I needed to tell this to someone, I know you will understand my pain, guys :)2 -
I've been been in consulting doing systems implementations for about a decade. I just started a new e-commerce project with perhaps the most agreeable client I've ever encountered - in fact they're extremely eager to make my job easier. Just today one of the stakeholders, completely seriously, uttered the phrase "maybe we don't need to care about IE".
After ten years living thru every client cliche imaginable over and over again I now find I don't know how to trust. Their acceptance of best practices and my recommendations is almost unnerving...3 -
For the Project Management exam, my university requires us to install a program on our PERSONAL laptops that is meant to take over the control over the entire system during the exam, monitor any “suspicious activities”. The software is closed-source (it’s called Schoolyear Exams), does god-knows-what in the background, takes the control over the entire system and can be summoned through any Chromium web browser.
Don’t get me wrong, I get that you want to make sure nobody is cheating - but at this point, I’d rather write it with pen and paper. Or just provide us with computers for the time of exam.
I decided to whip out my old laptop instead, installed a Windows 10 on a separate SSD, and installed that software on it.
Also it’s very amusing that this software is also mandatory for the Linux exam… But the program can’t run on Linux (it’s Windows and Mac only and doesn’t even support M1 chips).
EDIT: typos11 -
anyone else make grand prediction in the past which turned out to be bit off like:
"Silverlight is the future its going to replace html/javascript" :))
"Windows Phone 7 is going to take over from Android and Apple"6 -
Going on a trip in the middle east in less than 48 hours. Not gonna take my laptop. Can't risk losing it. Most likely will be offline for over a week.
Excited to see the pyramids and the holy sites. I wonder if seeing those holy sites for real would make me religious. 🤔
Most importantly, hope to be back in one piece🤞🏻4 -
I can’t stand how designers insist on over designing <select> elements. No, 50 divs with aria attrs will not make this component as usable as the native elements4
-
Does anyone else have this problem?
I hate designing a personal website. I'm never content with what I made, and even if I feel satisfied a couple of days later I want to start all over. I've gone through at least five complete rebuilds in one year because I can't make up my mind! How do you deal with it?11 -
Does anybody out there actually really love their job? Because I do. I'm not sure if it's just me or that my job is actually great, but my coworkers are respectful, my boss lets me have control over each project's pace, I get to write tests and invest in refactoring, and I make good money doing it.
Is this just me?7 -
"Stop throwing errors in your library! They cause my app to crash"
Who amongst us hasn't hear of the popular maxim: "Fail late even after you know something is wrong, and then make sure the failure cascades over the whole app in mysterious ways"5 -
Why has Google implemented those stupid menu bar buttons across the bottom of their apps. Isn't the YouTube app over jammed already. With most android phones using on screen buttons, you have to reach your thumb over the bezel, nav buttons and menu bar just to make a scroll motion for your content. I've sent Google feedback multiple times to of course (typical Google) to no avail. Let iOS have lower third menu buttons. We don't all have an S8, which as I see it is the only way this is alleviated.14
-
Pick fun and enjoyment over money. I make considerably less than I could somewhere else, but I enjoy doing it.
Good and friendly co-workers are also a huge plus.1 -
I love how my University CSSE courses make it hard for Windows users.
Student: Is it possible use VALGRIND in Windows CMD?
prof: I don't know, I only use Linux command line. Next question.
All programs must compile and run on Linux using g++. So everyone using windows has strip the IDE bloat and transfer the project files over to the remote Linux lab every single time they compile and run.
Benefits of being a Linux user!5 -
If you're going to fucking build a fucking templating system, you fucking better make sure it fucking follows proper structure -- Bootstrap, vanilla CSS, whatever -- so that when I follow conventions your fucking shit doesn't fucking shit all over the fucking place in fifty fucking different ways.1
-
When graphic design agency hands over inconsistent, partly done "desktop" A4-layout made in 2 days in InDesign. "Okey developer guy, make it responsive, magically. Oh, and pixel perfect!!" Design agency takes 40% of the budget. Never again.2

Now add real hostnames... Make this list longer (roughly 15-18)
Add resource calculation, migration of VMs, organizing new hardware, removing and rebuilding hosts, etc.
I think my brain is permanently damaged and cannot be repaired.
Hardware migration finally over tomorrow.
I really won't miss the fuckton of Excel lists, constant speaking mistakes, having sore fingers from mutilating the desk calculator etc.
I'm too tired to be happy. But... It's over.1 -
All these switching to linux posts and it feels universe is telling me to make the switch.
Yesterday, again, i had to go through failing windows 10 update. Wasted over 2 hr just booting up my pc because of fucking update that is incompatible with my PC.
I want to switch right now.
Which linux distro do you recommend? I let devRant choose my OS. ( p.s Its a laptop )33 -

Client: yeah gradients don't go with our branding and could you remove those curves!

Spend 10 minutes patiently waiting for a progress bar to gradually make its way to the end, only to reset to the beginning and start all over again. Realize you actually have NO idea what the actual progress is or how long this is going to take and that the first progress bar was actually just representing the progress to this realization.

Spend the last year helping to rescue a company from the brink of collapse. Literally live and breathe the company for no extra pay or reward, supporting and improving all aspects from IT and development, HR, Legal, Procurement, business day to day running and Accounts.
Create a business plan and forecast for 2019 with the General Manager over the weekend (unpaid) to grow the business and start to make lots of profit, hand it over to the director and he makes me redundant the next day.
Furious doesn't even cover what I'm feeling at the moment.3 -

Stop building libraries.
You can't build libraries.
You're not software engineers.
Write your script as plainly as possible.
Why?
Cus for every fucking paper that has code associated with it, unless it's from Meta or Google, I'm having to edit to make shit work.
Stop over-engineering shit.
Write your model and fuck off.12 -
Got into a fight with a teammate last week (acting PM, she was) over how she basically failed to do her job.
Got blamed for talking about it by project owner. (basically, they wanted to make themselves feel good by passing down the blame down the blame chain... But I rebelled)
... Don't want to walk into the same meeting tomorrow. 😢😔😞8 -

Why can’t you just make a document with the description of the things you want?
Why do you feel the need to send me fucking voice notes over 9 min long?2 -
It's one of the rare fields where you get to be both creative and functional. Whatever you want to happen on the screen you can make it happen. You can really put yourself into whatever you are making. Maybe you can't do that and make a ton of money at work. Maybe you can't do that and release a product everyone will love. But you can do it. You can put power in people's hands. You can embed parts of yourself, your philosophy, your thoughts, your wishes, etc. into software and spread it all over the world very quickly. I like that about it1

@dfox Would you make it possible to cluster push notifications that occur on the same post? When I receive a lot of notifs at once it clogs up my notification center.
Additionally would it be possible so that I can completely turn off seeing certain types of notifs even in the app not just for push notifications (from what I gather that is the only thing I have control over)2 -

We’re a young and dynamic team of messy data-scientists who have failed at being employed on the real market. Our experience in losing data and throwing files away is more than amazing! Over the years, we have managed to get rid of so much important data at home and even at work. Pictures of our holidays, important invoices, login details… it’s all gone. So we started to make a business out of what we’re good at.2

Urgh. One key skill that wannabes seem to forget is patience. Patience, patience, patience. Don't panic, don't be lazy, be methodical. This is the way of the analytical computer scientist. Don't panic all over the place or make assumptions..

It is easy to believe something is over-engineered as a junior. You open a solution and get slapped in the face with a wet fish of many classes, with strange names, doing very little, with everything coming together in ways you don't understand.
My advice is to learn about design patterns, clean code, clean architecture, and model driven design. Until that point I don't think you can make such a distinction. And indeed once knowledgeable of patterns and techniques as well as the domain, the same solution can look obvious, elegant and readable.
In a field where everyone is saying 'dont over-engineer', one must be able to tell if something is actually bad, or just uses techniques you don't recognise.
Telling your senior you think something is over done just because you don't understand it is not good. First learn techniques, understand the code, then form opinions that are at least relevant then.
From someone who committed that crime.4 -
Using chatGPT. Seems about as cooperative and willing to do its job as I am.
Can you make me a word cloud in svg format?
"I'm sorry, I can't directly generate svg content, here are some other tools for that"
Can you write code?
"Yes, certainly, here's some python to generate a word cloud"
Can you write svd code?
"Yes, certainly, here's an example word cloud in svd format"
Can you make the words get bigger when I mouse over them?
"Yes, here's the code".
It's mastered "have you tried googling it?"2 -
Very much! My internship during school turned into a full-time job over the summer! I don’t make crazy money, but I LOVE the work and cost of living in my area is pretty low compared to the rest of the country. So, I’m great! 😁😁2

I've just realized that a game with over 1 million downloads (the ranking list is over 2 million people) has its solutions saved in the preference's file. So anyone with a rooted phone can access this file. This make me so fucking crazy: you make a stupid shitty game and get over 2 million users and don't even bother to make it good.
Now I have to decide whether to write to the developer to inform him that this is a stupid way to store the solutions or to make an app to let everyone know the solutions.4 -
In my second year of A levels in secondary school (college) we had to make a quiz game using Microsoft Visual Basic. Was my first time using the software, got annoyed within a few weeks and downloaded a template off the internet. The whole IT department thought I was some form of genius until I crashed the servers (in over 200 schools) trying to hack them 6 weeks later.
Sir if you're reading this, I'm sorry.1 -

1. Scream internally
2. Realise I’m getting over-stressed

6. Make myself a drink (tea etc)
7. Come back and work the problem with a better perspective and fresh eyes.3 -

Best boss is my current boss(es). They don’t breathe down my neck, no micromanagement, and basically let me outsource anything I don’t want to do or don’t know how to do. I work 100% remote on my own schedule (except for a few core hours) and every time I ask if they have any problems with my work or feedback for my improvement they say they couldn’t be happier. If I make a mistake, they don’t rake me over the coals and they just let me handle the problem.
I’ve been waiting over 20 years for a job like this one. Why can’t it be this way for everyone?3 -

How to mess with Github Copilot:
1. create open source repo with MIT license
2. create generic functions that solve specific problems
3. put violent, racist, sexist, phobic, political, etc phrases in the code

5. watch as people get upset over copilot being evil and putting shit into their code4 -
Doing research at my school over summer. Talk to some other researchers from other departments (chem, english, bio, etc). Worst thing? Absuse LINQ and not in a fun sexy way.
Entity framework > check.
LINQ query > check.
Standard IEnunerable magic > check
The developer had decided that it would be a good idea to thread the enumerable all over the place and collapse it anytime they wanted access to the data.
I know it’s a rookie mistake a lot of people make, but it was some pretty core data that ended up being used all over the place, so it was a nightmare to correct and it really impacted performance.
Needless to say they felt very silly when we explained how LINQ was deferred. -
I had a user tell me how important he is and how our software is making it harder for important people like him to run reports on people in their region and how it "just doesn't make sense" for important people like him... and on and on and on and on.
I was on the phone for over 30 minutes.
Deep sigh -

How do you (not) secure your Rest based web service?
1. Chain it to shady organic authentication system built by a hoard of monkeys high on Tequila.
2. have secret keys that get copy pasted into config flat files, and index them on your code search engine.
3. make the onboarding extremely platform specific that you need 500 environment variables, 50 scripts, 5 fancy device presses and a tap dance to make a GET call to the service.
4. fish through 500 rotating log files that the authentication system generates for each API call made.
5. Leave traces all over the host so if you have to start over, you should sudo rm -rf / and set fire to your computer. -
So working on the cutting edge of 3d scanning (think project tango) i feel like my boss and his client are trying to sell a sham.
The technology is amazing but very limited. They are trying to sell magic. The PoC barrely works properly by their standards, and the one they are trying to sell to saw a fluke in behaviour that made it appear as if the PoC worked like how they are trying to sell it.
I hear them brooding over this plan to just sell that without any real plans to make this project work. There is no way they can make it work eithout compromises.
I do not want to be part of this ._.2 -
Watched a co-worker configure a new "MacBook pro" as a replacement for the four-year-old one this personcurrently has. A replacement machine is justified as the old one is on the fritz... Naturally because MacBooks aren't any better than any other machine, build quality or otherwise. I still cannot fathom why anyone would even consider budgeting over $3000 for a single machine, only to then buy several adapters just to make the thing work.
Apple is off the deep end. People who fall for that BS are off the deep end.
I feel like showing the manager several alternative models at half the price just to make the point that MacBooks are a pointless waste of money.4 -

Best: Realising I can code and I actually do have the drive to pursue this career but need to make some changes to get there.
Worst: Also realising I'm very logic oriented and process driven and work in a company that would rather piss on exposed power mains over training their staff. -
Question for my programing elders.
I am a high school student. If/when I am asked to make a client a website, what is the general price that I should charge? (Remember, I am a slightly inexperienced american highschooler, so I don't want to over or under charge them for my work)15 -

WhoTF at sennheiser engineering thought it was a good idea to make the wireless headphone say 'lost connection' every 2 seconds if not connected to a device. frkng gives me a headache everytime i hear it. worst thing is that if it is connected to two devices and gets disconnected from the device i am not using, it starts shouting "lost connection" over the playing audio.7

Concept: an app that runs on a smartwatch that activates when you disable an alarm (temporarily, not through the settings) and uses the on board sleep sensors to re-enable the alarm so you dont over sleep. But if you do actually wake up the first time, you dont need to disable a second alarm.
I would love to know if this app already exists or if someone is going to make it6 -
If I don't stop being a piece of shit entropy will prevail and my life in general will suck
I need to do something different like stopping being a crazy bastard that literally does exactly the same fucking things over and over and then denies them when someone confronts me

Okay, Google. Stop this.
I'm very upset. Drive applications have gotten slower and slower over time on every single browser that isn't chromium based. This isn't their fault. You can't make your application, that tons of institutions pay for, gradually slower on every browser that's not yours. This never used to be a problem, and now it affects everyone *but you*. It's highly suspicious given your track record with YouTube. Hidden div over the video to prevent hardware optimization. What the hell?
You used to be the only big 4 company I had some trust left in. Over the last few months, I've lost it.11 -

No Rant:
I guess I will start a religous discussion with it but I want your opinion on what tool I should learn.
Vim or Emacs (or stay with my IDE)?
For all of my programmer life I used IDEs... From Eclipse over CodeBlocks over VS to IntelliJ.
But now I realized that I want to be one of the cool kids. And using plain IntelliJ is uncool. No matter how much I love this tool.
So now I want to invest some time into learning. I never managed to do much in Vim since all code-completions sucked ass, feedback on syntax errors was bad and I never saw how I could be any faster with that shit compared to what IntelliJ does for me.
Will Emacs solve all those problems? Will Emacs make me code 1000 times faster and make having a mouse useless?
Or am I just too dumb for Vim? Can Vim itself do what my IDE does for me? Will it make me look as cool as I want to be?
Or should I stick to IntelliJ and just install Vim bindings?
What is your opinion on Vim vs Emacs vs any IDE?8 -
As a kid when I was coding I used building blocks and I used some yesterday for Lego robotics at a science center and I felt really dumb because over 2 years since I was 10 I used actual code like typing it and it feels much better than blocks and just over all building blocks just make me feel so stupid😵2

Why does my brain just struggle so much with Rust.
So much of the design fundamentals I've learnt over the last 10 years from doing OO in memory managed languages don't carry over very well into Rust, and my brain is sucking at coming up with alternatives, or finds the alternatives I do make ugly.
Frustration is real.2 -
That’s it! I have had enough of business development, design and other non-technical departments of the business! STOP making us technical types sit through your demo meetings and circle-jerking each other on how great everything looks and “how exited you are for the future…”!
Look, I’m all for enthusiasm but taking it in turns to make over optimistic comments feels false and nauseating!!!!3 -
We are 3-4 days away from deployment to production. We are still bug fixing. But one coworkers decided this is the time to make a fuss about the way everything is set up. He doesn't like the dev database. So he knocks it over.. and while so doing it, he doesn't inform the team. And when I ask if something else is gonna knock over? No answer! (And something broke down too..)
Now we have issues to test our bugfixes. The whole thing took me half a day finding out and made me distracted with frustration, and not just for me. Most bugs could've been done in that half a day!
I so wanna punch the guy xD but no, I gotta save face, pfff!2 -

ColdFusion and all ColdFusion devs should be executed. Its a god-awful software from the 90's and if you still use it you're either braindead or ignorant.
Shut up about legacy CF code too! No one cares whether or not your embeddable calendar would be hard to make in JS; fucking figure it out.
I realise that CF may make things easier in the short run, but in the long run you'll have introduced so much technical debt that you'll run crying back to JS anyways; CF is so hard to refactor and even to make flexible that you would spend less total time over an application lifecycle learning JS.11 -
Fine! If I’m not allowed to make improvements to the site, I’ll blatantly write you shitty code and continue to fuck you over for the future. I tried to help but you guys are fucked.3

The CEO just made a huge huge push-over to the developers.
He doesn't have any customers/clients and wants us to push our limits to make a Service Oriented Architecture where legacy code is needed to be revived, no documentation, and a single motherfucking mobile developer who has 3 projects already in his 1st month of stay.5 -
Not much of a SQL Dev, still an apprentice and had a basic run throughs. Client needed a migration script to run, which I was assigned. Took me a good 6/7 days to make, transfer over a secure (and VERY slow) network took 2 hours. Infrastructure 3rd party took 2 days to clear and run. After all that process. I then realise, I left the fucking rollback in1

Is it me or you also feel guilty for handing over the shitty code that does the job and try to make it better before handing over?

I was making coffee this morning when one of my managers walked up and asked me if I could make a cup for him too.
I was like sure, anything to make you happy. (Maybe you'll lessen the amount of work I have to do today 😀)
I finished making both the cups of coffee and the brought his over to his desk. He drank some and then almost spit it out. He complained about how the coffee was not dark roast it was medium roast, and he could tell the difference and I should have known that.
I was like "well if you're going to complain about how I make your coffee go make your fucking own". (I didn't say that out loud though, I probably would have been fired!)8 -
Bloody superglue. Every time I think I'm remotely skilled enouh to make a "quick repair" using the stuff, it always goes beyond horribly wrong and ends up with blobs of superglue all over the desk, one hand stuck to the thing I'm meant to be repairing, and the other stuck to some random nearby object. Dahh. Seems so simple.
I'm sure there's a dev analogy there with your least favourite language too.6 -
After much consideration I've decided to learn and use react native over ionic/cordova as I'm going to rewrite most of my views from an existing Web project anyways (if I wanted to make it work with ionic)
I feel anxious and excited at the same time. Hopefully I made the right call.
Anyone here have good experiences switching from ionic to react native?2 -
Saw this meme in an article the other day about why it's a bad idea to make your guru-grade devs quit.
It suddenly dawned on my that the meme pretty much summed up all the decent Devs i've worked with over the years - they generally turn coffee and beer into code. -

"I showed it to my graphic designer friend and they said it needs more fonts"
"I've made some improvements in Word for you"5 -

How to impress the extent of your power over your employees and partners:
1. Make the tech team spend inordinate amounts of effort to investigate someone stealing an almost worthless piece of junk, to make an example for the rest of the workforce.
2. Complain in "secret" meetings that the tech team is not up to the task of delivering the project.
3. Announce that the project will probably, but not certainly, be shut down. -

Question for those who have programming for several years :
Does it sometimes feel like the logic in your mind is reflected by the career path you have chosen?
Meaning, for me, when it comes to decision making, or when trying to understand an idea, I usually black out when a variable in my mind does not make sence.
Sometimes it feels like programming logic has taken over how I think.2 -
Sometimes I write code so pristine, so sexy it blinds
but sometimes...
sometimes I can't let it go
gotta get back to it
make it flashier, prettier, faster, smaller...
And always, ALWAYS! I shit over it, full-blown dysentery. diarrhea so bleak, so dark and nasty it makes me question my sanity, my soul cracks, my mind numbs...
Today was one of these days, but it was the last. I shall never ever do that again.4 -
I will literally pull out you soul, grill it, and then put it back into you just to kill you, roll you up in nice mustard, pickles, bacon, pepper and salt and then roll you over with beef so I can properly make a roast and then, when you're ded, I will take your soul again to just torture it for all eternity.

So I make websites on the side for small time clients for some additional income. And without fail every time I sit down to work on this one site something goes wrong. First there were problems with the hosting, and now the template that the client chose is no longer for sale. Real shame because they picked what I considered the favourite too and now I regret waiting to fork over the money to make the purchase.5

has anyone written the first flagship software of a company and what happened to the software afterwards?

After months of launching an intranet for a major corporation, that ONLY were supposed to be temporary until they went over to Microsoft Sharepoint solution. They're now asking for new features, like not having it locked to their VPN, and make it responsive, maybe make it an app!
It was all thrown together and a lot of spaghetti code, because the terms were that it would be temporary from when they merged with another company till they got the Sharepoint solution up an running. Oh, and it is all run on a Wordpress 3.3 solution, they don't want to upgrade it, because they would loose some irrelevant plugin that they love.2 -
Received a contact for a new job today, 3 months notice if you want to leave, 1 if they make you redundant. Working hours are 9- 5:30, but evenings, weekends, holidays can be requested with no extra pay or time off. Recruiter recommended I sign it within an hour of receiving it, before I had time to read it, despite them taking over 5 days to get it to me. Suddenly my new job is soured.6

I rarely donate money to charity, but I consider myself fairly charitable in other ways. For example, I rejected the 16th "billion dollar app idea" presented to me over the course of a few years, today. (Counting only ideas that come from semi rational people). I do believe I make the world a better place.

Not finding a way to make money posting YouTube videos all day long. Like that woman who uploads DIY “how to make slime from Elmer’s Glue” and makes over $100,000 every month from ads and merchandise. Or that 5 year old who makes millions per month in ad views playing with toys on camera and his parents upload it to YouTube calling it a “toy review”.
I wanna be a YouTube star for just a year so I can retire.5 -
A while back I was learning web development so I could create web apps. I'm by no means any good at graphic design and whatnot, so every time I'd make a page to rig up with some JS I would get really frustrated with trying to make the page look decent and professional (not professional quality design, but usable as an application in a professional setting), even with bootstrap.
Does anyone have tips for getting over that hurdle? I want to learn, but I get discouraged by my graphical ineptitude.1 -
Joomla, motherfucking Joomla. It was supposed to make managing content easy. With just a little coding you could make a fully functional, multi page website. Ugh. It took more time to master the oddities and weirdness of Joomla than it would have to just code the fucker.
This taught me the painful lesson that there are no REAL shortcuts. Useful “shortcuts” in development are just abstractions over mastery of a task. There are many more shortcuts that are more like dangerous hacks, and Joomla is rife with them and opens a lot of opportunities to make more.2 -
I am really thinking of switching my main computer over to linux. I’m getting pretty tired of windows bugs and I keep finding myself wanting to use linux commands. The only reason I haven’t switched is MS Office products and video games, but I suppose I could make a new windows image just for that and dual-boot...13

Ideally, there would be 3 engineers and 2 sales people. The engineers would pair with the sales folks on calls to figure out what customers need and hire designers to design just want needs to be built. Everyone would be responsible, not over commit, not oversell, and figure out creative ways to make the company money and achieve technological superiority.

I’ve always hated the pixel fucking part in a webdev project. It’s the most frustrating becausing it’s partly about optinions.

God damn the last few days:
JUST give me some modular-ish code that is a bit more explicit and doesn't measure every fucking thing over and over.
Like I get how taking a couple .lenght and a bunch of other variables adds up to "Make a meat lovers pizza".
But fuck man when the code goes all over the place just give me a block of code that measures all that shit in ONE PLACE a god damn pizzType variable that I can use elsewhere and just fucking know what is going on.
Every damn corner becomes this maze of measurements that you cant be sure is exactly the same unless you fucking watch every damn variable, I get how that happens but god damn.2 -

A team of over 70 completing around 3-5 tests per day, per person. A deadline 8 days from now with around 900 to go. Ideal job
I do creative projects whatever I want with no deadlines or pressure, everyone loves whatever I make except me because I know I can do better than that last crap I made, getting paid plenty of money to pay off all my family and friends debt and have plenty left over. God I hate slow burn in projects.
Trying to do something with a feature that's still in beta for the language. No docs so I asked for this.
Seems like a cycle of days where I'd be trying random ass solutions to no avail when suddenly one time I mistype the Google search and it brings me to this obscure ass blog with a potential solution that raises some new issue all over again.
It's been modification/addition/removal of over 10000 lines in different local branches and commits and only 200 of them actually are going to make it into the final code.1 -

There was a project I took over that was supposed to be at 90% when the previous developer quit. The project was in QA with some "minor" bugs that needed to be fixed. When I looked at the minor bugs I realized that the project had major underlying data issues. So after working 80 hour weeks I managed to hobble it together and make the release date.
That was a little over three years ago. Since then another developer has taken over maintenance and enhancements on the product and overall the application works pretty well for what it is.
So his analogy is, that the application is a tank that was made out of aluminum foil that has been hit many times in battle. Whenever it has been hit we have patched the tank with random things like bricks, soda bottles, and old car doors yet somehow it keeps going. The tank is still surviving the war but we really don't know how.

I hate this modern fad of "composed" , "modular" extension/plug-in development. ALL I want to do is add two dropdowns to a phpBB forum, one for users and one for a single admin setting.
Guess what? I need TEN fucking files to make this extension work. Fuck your fucked dependency injection, fuck learning your whole bloody "ecosystem" (kill me already), fuck having a "tutorial" that doesn't explain what half the settings are...
It really drives me nuts that I have to spread my code over so many files to make this work.
That said, I don't really hate phpBB, but maaaaaaaan, making the simplest, dumbest thing is unnecessarily complicated.

In recent time my anger comes from a junior dev who keeps saying he's got no time to test and breaks working code leading to others getting the blame and the team leader not addressing the problem.
In the past it was micro managing managers who thought they knew how to make a UI best, and also that one project where they gave a client carte blanche on changes to avoid legal trouble. Nothing more infuriating than multiple people telling you how to change things over and over while you're being passed around in their power struggle.1 -

just saw MS' presentation on bing+chatgpt. It could actually lead to something.
If someone could make a kanban-to-slack bot that can answer my Sprint status, it could vastly reduce my time spent answering the same question over and over to different people.
That is yet again AI doing what it was born to do: creative, artistic and engaging personal connections so that humans can focus on tedious calculations and repetitive labour.
If someone could make a bot to answer my emails for me I could spend the whole day without having to interrupt my workflow to interact with a single "professional" human!7 -
We had a meeting where all the devs on a large sprint team were told they must attend late that evening. The gist of that meeting was 'well done your all working hard and done some good work but we have over committed so work harder!" but they took an hour and a half to make the point.

Do the design first and make sure you get it reviewed!! If the reviewer is always too busy to look at your design, remind them that you can't start the actual coding until they do the review and go over it with you. And be open to their suggestions, it may save time later down the line.

Recruiters on LinkedIn will be like: "I just came across your profile and ...". Scrolls up the message history and there is the same message a few times with a different job.
I know recruiters have to send out tons of emails and using templates makes it a lot easier, but at least make and effort to make it look like you aren't just reusing the same message over and over. -

Hello tech community ,
Quick question. I have been learning web development casually over a couple of years. Now,I'm stepping up my game. Playing with big boy libraries like Vue and React. Diving into JavaScript and functional react.
I can make static websites. Even dynamic ones. I know how to deploy websites from my terminal and I have done an ftp once before ,which was weird. But it was a long time ago. OMG my question is how do you transfer over a project to a client? I made a cool site. Added some JavaScript. Maybe it's pulling in some data. Maybe it's static. What is the best course of action? I really want to start a web design/developer side hustle.
Thanks homies.10 -

Least favorite enterprise software (so far) is Oracle JD Edwards (but more specifically the integration between systems).
Unfortunately a board member was friends with an employee who recommended JDE. It required full time maintenance and a few years later that employee left and the company wrote off over a million dollars to go back to the old (but slightly updated) system.
Following that, a board member (the same one I think) agreed to have another friend's security business install CCTV across the branches. The project was not scoped and no thought had gone into it, making a real mess for the IT department to sort out (provided hardware was under spec'd, existing networking equipment needed replacing, etc)
Who do these upper management people think they are that they can make decisions based on little fact or research and expect the people beneath them to just magically make work.
The huge salaries of those people is not justified. We're the real workers who actually get stuff done so the pay and appreciation should be spread accordingy.
Rant over. -

Not to mention the disastrous android app update recently that still has unaddressed that make daily usage a pain...3 -
Is it possible to continue file upload for android default browser without the browser being open?
I’ve been tasked by a company to make it so video and photo files can continue being uploaded from an app even when that app is closed. Slight issue is that the app is just a web viewer that goes to a web app.
I know this is convoluted but would the only way to do that be to overlay an actual upload button over the web view so that I can use androids built in service to do that and make a whole new way for the file to be uploaded to the server?
Surely there must be an easier way.14 -
I just finally took time to look at creating symbolic links for node modules and package and package lock json files all from a boilerplate code for my frontend projects,
I saved over 15gb of disk space,
my SSD is 40gb so that's fair
now I have all my node modules for frontend projects in a separate container and node modules for backend projects in a separate container
I still havent figured out how to trim down my package.json file before pushing because there'll be some unused libraries.
for now any direct changes I make to the package and package lock json files will be reflected in the the symlinked directory and them reflect over all projects that share it
I have to be careful here8 -

So when i was playing saxophone, I realized that music and coding are just the same. When you get a new score to play you need to start over by learning how to play it. When you code and start a new project you need to start from zero. When you play the score over and over you learn from your mistakes. When you code you debug your faults when there is something wrong in your code. At the exam you need to make no faults when you play music. When you’re at the deadline. There shouldn't be no faults in your code

I feel like the fear of technical debt is driving organizations to make rash decisions. I see now that a few things that make programing seems so hard are;
1. Over thinking, over thinking will have you in a box not knowing where to start at times.
2. Procrastination, don't put off learning that concept or paradigm. A lot of stuff are interlinked or transferable regardless of language. So you don't need to lean it all but learn as much as you can.
1. Perfectionism, your code early on might just suck, and that's great cause then you can fix it and make it suck less. Nothing is perfect and they don't have to be in over to be good.
These are some of the things I wish I could go back and tell myself.4 -

Developers are magical machines powered by coffee that can make something out of nothing. The CEO machine runs on expensive Amazonian coffee and comes up with ideas and unreasonable deadlines. Daisy chaining them makes the CEO machine's idea into a product with uncommented code and console.log()s left over from development.

Should we fight RIAA? I think we shouldn't even acknowledge its existence.
Every zoomer knows where to get every type of content they want. Every zoomer knows where to get it for free. This is what I always strive for — to make walking over RIAA our culture, to walk over RIAA without even knowing RIAA exists. Zoomers really pay for digital shit only when they feel like it. If something is "taken down", zoomer still gets it in like thirty seconds, maybe two minutes maximum if the thing wasn't popular. This became the basic internet skill and oh how I like it.
For every problem they make, we invent a solution. We have the fundamental and unbreakable principle of the analog hole (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...) AND the smartest people on our side, they only have the greediest.
We don't have to take down RIAA and others. We don't have to fight — we already won.11 -
Okay people I need help. I've researched a ton, but I can't really find a good answer. I'm trying to choose between Linux mint and Ubuntu. Now I know that there aren't any huge differences, but can you please help me, find out what would make you choose one over the other?8

Why Linux Mint feels like a teenager who doesn't want to grow up and be a real man?
Over the years Linux mint is what it is and i can assure you will be in the upcoming hundred years, it's so boring by default, it is based on Ubuntu, if that's the case why the devs are re-inventing something worse than ubuntu, people will argue, it comes with customization, okay, do you call few extensions a gateway to customization? I installed it in a VM and customized it to what i almost wished for however, it still feels like a child who spoiled his room over and over, is that the best thing the devs can make? I try my best to love it but from the inside there is no love, it's like your girlfrienr who you pretend to love but you are disguised....

I can make a prediction the same dirty ass bastards that screwed me over the last time this happened will do so again because god forbid I live on like I have so many times before like an ordinary man with some moral improvement no no
That messes with their circular walk into oblivion without life2 -

Starting yesterday, I'm going to study a total of 400 hours over the next 3-4 months on coding, system design, and behavioral interviews. My goal is to 2x my current salary (currently make almost 6 figures) and get out of this shitty company. I want to make it big and say that my studying was all worth it.
Wish me luck peeps. I'll come back in dues time to let you know how it all went. -
Hey guys,
What books had the biggedt impact on how you live your life, conduct your business, the way you code or make decisions?
I'm reading "Zero to One" for the second time now and love reading it all over again.10 -
Can anybody share some tips on desktop devices that will make my life easier? I build apps and websites on multiple devices. My desk is a mess, devices are all over the office, wires are everywhere.I need more zen.
I need some kind of shelf or tray that holds maybe 5+ different tablets/mobiles neatly. I also need charge points, maybe a nice under-monitor tray. Needs to be robust.
Thanks6 -
Watching nature recycle itself into precise movements of insects and birds in the same places over the years because humans are doing EXACTLY the same things over those years, yet again, makes me feel like i'm in a damn simulator where some logic issue is causing everything to loop.
https://youtube.com/watch/...
kind of like that.
except in the sense that tons of people moving about in scheduled lives is creating a continuous circle we're all getting caught in that is spreading out and animal life and even weather are in sync with it.
and it never used to be this way until a group of fucked up sadists decided to make it this way.6 -
My code editor has been frozen for 3 minutes because I entered a single character. My computer is a 16core 5.2ghz marvel of engineering. Visual Studio is a plague on humanity full-stop. Working with Unreal Engine gives me no choice but to use this piece of trash IDE that has only been going downhill since 2013. Cancel the project. Don't start over. Give up. Let Jetbrains make the IDEs.5

Should be noted these people have some things to make up for since their worthless asses are hogging up the housing yet again and this job is taking advantage of my situation and trying to keep me screwed over therefore collectively these people need to pay or spend several seasons in the street4

I want to print the first number in the Fibonacci sequence to contain over 1000 digits. I got fibbonaci to work but I cannot seem to figure out how to implement the "Contain over 1000 digits".
Do I make a list to store the fibbonaci numbers in then do a statement?
My Python 3 Code:
def fibonacci(num):
if num == 2 or num ==1:
return 1
return sum([fibonacci(num - 2), fibonacci(num - 1)])
print(fibonacci(7))7 -

Reading over some docs today and I had a horrible flashback to something that I wrote when first learning how to code.
I couldn't figure out how to make a variable accessible in an imported file, so I made it a builtin. I might cry. -
It's always hard to balance time between romantic affairs and programming projects when both are going on simultaneously. I've been talking to a girl at my college, and even though she doesn't take up much of my time, I still feel like it's harder to make time for my programming. I guess this is more of dating affecting my code, but I personally prioritize code over dating currently in life.

What is gonna happen in 8/16, 2048?
(August 16th, 2048)
People are always making dumb conspiracy predictions. Let's make one, like that's the date when AI relinquishes control over the economy to leave earth or something.7
