Seven months ago:

Project Manager: - "Guys, we need to make this brand new ProjectX, here are the specs. What do you think?"
Bored Old Lead: - "I was going to resign this week but you've convinced me, this is a challenge, I never worked with this stack, I'm staying! I'll gladly play with this framework I never used before, it seems to work with this libA I can use here and this libB that I can use here! Such fun!"
Project Manager: - "Awesome! I'm counting on you!"
Six months ago:
====================
Cprn: - "So this part you asked me to implement is tons of work due to the way you're using libA. I really don't think we need it here. We could use a more common approach."
Bored Old Lead: - "No, I already rewrote parts of libB to work with libA, we're keeping it. Just do what's needed."
Cprn: - "Really? Oh, I see. It solves this one issue I'm having at least. Did you push the changes upstream?"
Bored Old Lead: - "No, nobody uses it like that, people don't need it."
Cprn: - "Wait... What? Then why did you even *think* about using those two libs together? It makes no sense."
Bored Old Lead: - "Come on, it's a challenge! Read it! Understand it! It'll make you a better coder!"
Four months ago:
==============
Cprn: - "That version of the framework you used is loosing support next month. We really should update."
Bored Old Lead: - "Yeah, we can't. I changed some core framework mechanics and the patches won't work with the new version. I'd have to rewrite these."
Cprn: - "Please do?"
Bored Old Lead: - "Nah, it's a waste of time! We're not updating!"
Three months ago:
===============
Bored Old Lead: - "The code you committed doesn't pass the tests."
Cprn: - "I just run it on my working copy and everything passes."
Bored Old Lead: - "Doesn't work on mine."
Cprn: - "Let me take a look... Ah! Here you go! You've misused these two options in the framework config for your dev environment."
Bored Old Lead: - "No, I had to hack them like that to work with libB."
Cprn: - "But the new framework version already brings everything we need from libB. We could just update and drop it."
Bored Old Lead: - "No! Can't update, remember?"
Last Friday:
=========
Bored Old Lead: - "You need to rewrite these tests. They work really slow. Two hours to pass all."
Cprn: - "What..? How come? I just run them on revision from this morning and all passed in a minute."
Bored Old Lead: - "Pull the changes and try again. I changed few input dataset objects and then copied results from error messages to assertions to make the tests pass and now it takes two hours. I've narrowed it to those weird tests here."
Cprn: - "Yeah, all of those use ORM. Maybe it's something with the model?"
Bored Old Lead: - "No, all is fine with the model. I was just there rewriting the way framework maps data types to accommodate for my new type that's really just an enum but I made it into a special custom object that needs special custom handling in the ORM. I haven't noticed any issues."
Cprn: - "What!? This makes *zero* sense! You're rewriting vendor code and expect everything to just work!? You're using libs that aren't designed to work together in production code because you wanted a challenge!?? And when everything blows up you're blaming my test code that you're feeding with incorrect dataset!??? See you on Monday, I'm going home! *door slam*"
Today:

Project Manager: - "Cprn, Bored Old Lead left on Friday. He said he can't work with you. You're responsible for Project X now."24 -
At the moment I'm trying to optimize a slow old MySQL query from a project I made several years ago. The execution time is in excess of 55 seconds. Not good :(
After about an hour of experimenting I finally set a good index and reduced the time to < 3 seconds.
Chuffed :)3 -
Often saying fuck it when I've got a project and I kind of really need to use git but I'm not good with it so I just go back to good old scp again 😅11
-
Guess what my supervisor had lying around the house and gave me? (from an old company project) My desk is gonna shine bright like a diamond. Yes, it's RGB.4
-
PM : Have you finished the login issues?
Me, junior dev: No mister.
PM: Why not? You're going to delay the sprint.
Me: The other PM told me not to do it.
When you're the only dev in a project with two managers, life suddenly feels like you're back to 5 years old with your parents arguing all the time.6 -
You can hate me: as a 34 year old php developer, i've never used git in my workflow...
I plan to start today using it on one of my personal project (only because i have arrived at "backup-49.rar")(yes i develop on windows).
Finger crossed17 -

Boss: ehi I was checking out our latest product (made in vuejs) it's blazing fast and responsive.
Me : shiny eyes "... Can I refactor our biggest project from angular 1.5 to vuejs?"
Boss: "mmh what can you save from the old code base? "
Me: "mmh.. A lot.. Mmh like.. The CSS!"
Boss : "no"
I hoped!5 -
After 5 years of neglect I have finaly found some time to work on an old project of mine.
Not a bad view to work from either9 -

So I was digging through some old projects of mine and I came across this lil pokedex project I had started but not finished sometime last year. The frontend is great but sadly the backend was non-existent because I didnt have that knowledge yet.
But now that I do, I'm thinking of building the backend and just keeping the frontend i have with some tweaks here and there. Anyways, I'm pretty proud of this project.7 -
Okay so my weekend project went well :D put my retropie system inside of this old r2d2 I've had collecting dust. Has a cooling fan inside as well as a 16x2 lcd I was playing with. Got a red led tied to the rpis txd pin, ports in the front for easy access and power cord and hdmi coming out the back.2

A few months ago, I decided to let go some old clients with bad behavior and/or bad projects, since I noticed this was affecting my mental health (lowering my self esteem, make me feel depressed, anxious, etc).
I was exhausted of doing miracles in projects without git, build files, staging enviroments (yes... you can imagine), and receive all sort of curses when sudenly something stopped to work.
I set some requirements to work with any new project/client: 1) project needs to be under version control, 2) it must have staging enviroment, 3) I must work with build files.
As I still have contracts running, I'm communicating this to clients as soon as I finish my obligations.
Today, one of these clients told me they are leaving to work with another developer.
Reason: They said my new requirements are unreasonable and they prefer doing the old way.3 -
When client compares his cheap 3 months old project App with well established multi Billion $ Bigwigs' Apps :|
"Look how cars are moving smoothly on map in UBER, I want something like that"
"Look how fast is GOOGLE Search"
"Look how AMAZON figures out what we want next"
Are you fuckin serious :|5 -
Decided to update an old project. Turns out I wasn't stupid 6 years ago and my code still makes sense :)))4

*Checks the time*
06.30AM
Oh... yeah...sleep...
Hello coffee my old friend...
Time to head off to work then :)
How often does this happen to you?4 -
just wanted to look up something in an old project. saw things i could to better.
Ended up refactoring the whole project. Forgot what i was looking for.1 -
I raise my middle finger:
- to the past developers of this 4 year old piece of garbage project that we are maintaining, who thought that using StringBuffers to construct html documents as a Http response as a good idea
- to the bosses and managers, who keeps on giving unreasonable deadlines yet passes accountability to others.
I gave you all a Linus Torvalds style fuck you!!
That is it, I decided to resign -
Bugfix. About two years ago. Old C# codebase, MVC project... A fucking piece of it was sending money to the wrong Dynamics account, FOR TWO FUCKING YEARS.
Anyway...4 -
God fucking dammit.
I got assigned to a WordPress project...
I AM NOT A WORDPRESS DEVELOPER!!!
Why do I have to deal with this giant pile of stinking shit?
I'm a php developer, I make applications, I don't write fucking wordpress plugins...
WHY DOES THIS EXIST, WHY DID WORDPRESS BECOME SUCCESSFUL WHY CAN'T I JUST DEV IN PIECE.
Dear wordpress developers,
Please suffocate on a big fat old cock.
Regards.10 -

I'm so so happy to have joined devRant: it gave me lots of motivation to work on my personal projects. In the last two days I worked more on an old dream/project than I did in the last year. TWO. DAYS.
Don't know for how long this motivation will last, but - for now - thank you so much, people :')3 -
- Find an old js project in your computer
- Try to start it
"Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'undefined' of undefined"
- Delete it -
Coolest project : I revamped classic old school "Rogue" game ☺️
(while I was learning C programming)6 -
I took my old project and I was like "Why don't fix it and open source it?". So from 2785 lines of code in main class, I've cut it to 1662 lines of code while keeping same functionality plus some more...4
-
I found an old project on which I hadn't version controlled, so I decided to manually commit progress on a past date. Only problem GitHub calendar wouldn't show it.
I emailed them and because it was private repo I added them as contributor. Then I got this reply.15 -
This is a somewhat old story. I joined a project in making a 2.5d platformer in Unity. A couple months in, the project manager had decided that this game would have two sequels, an MMORPG, a live-action movie and a web series. He informed the whole team of this decision. One week later, every member of the dev team had left. This scope crept forth from the depths of hell and ruined a simple project. Lesson learned: Keep the scope small and don't bite over more than you can chew.
Edit: I know that you should dream big, but don't make 4 games, a web series and a movie simultaneously.3 -
Sooo I've been working on an ancient php 5.6 project that did not have any documentation and was a homemade "framework" created 7 years ago. The original creator is long gone and no one else knows a lot about this project.
When I first looked into it I almost immediately noticed the security flaws...
Old outdated libraries
a "development" feature to easily turn dev mode on/off
BY A GET PARAMETER!
it spits out full sql queries and php warnings -.-
Oh and did I mention that the site is a webshop.... and has a backdoor password?
AND THAT THE CUSTOMER REQUESTED THAT?3 -
Earlier today I had a old schoolmate of mine PM me.. long time no see, yada yada, don't beat around the bush please... Turns out that he wanted to get a bot for OldSchool RuneScape and found a bot that was paid... And didn't want to shell out 70-odd shekels and wanted me to write a "private script". Looking at the program he linked, it looked like it'd easily take thousands of lines of code and well over half a year to reimplement.
I'm sure that it's a problem we've all had at some point, and with old friends it's especially hard to deal with. Would you give in to something that's obviously gonna be a trainwreck of a project? Tell them that they're an ass for even thinking of something crazy like this? It's not exactly hard to get offended by something like this, as if our time and expertise is worth absolutely nothing.
Honestly, I just told him.. this will take several months to implement. Here's another project I wrote (https://git.ghnou.su/ghnou/cv if you're interested) and looking at the commit log, you can see that I started it half a year ago, and more or less finished the project 3 months later. That project took ~100 lines of code and this project would easily take thousands, and months if not over a year of work. It's easy to see that it's unreasonable. Now he's going to get a project that's behind Patreon instead, after I told him that it's completely reasonable to ask money for a project like this. What's more, when private it would cost a hell of a lot more - my time isn't free.
Long story short, just honestly explain that so and so is why it's unreasonable, and this and that are other more viable solutions because such and so. Non-technical people aren't necessarily unreasonable because they're dicks, most of the time it's just ignorance. Nothing wrong with that, and mistakes happen to the best of us :)3 -
During job interview
Me : Am I going to maintain old solution?
Interviewer : Of course not.
2nd day
PM : Please fetch project X from SVN5 -
Ignorant, stale old Dev I work with discovers huge bugs with a new project. A few weeks earlier I had brought up the fact that he does zero unit and behaviour testing and got basically laughed at.......
-
I was thinking about using Drupal for project, just to try out a CMS. Before using it, I decided to search devRant for "drupal" to see how bad it is.
Nope, I am just going to use plain old VueJS with flexbox.9 -
Project Owner: We don't need Git, it's a waste of time to set it up!
Yeah, whatever you say old man...7 -
Any project that started out with "All you have to do is make a copy of the old code. That should take 2-3 hours..." and ends with a huge list of change requests that takes days to fulfill.2
-
Just came back to an old project I haven't touched in a while and realized I did an awesome job documenting it. It's almost annoying my level of detail. I'm proud of my past self for thinking of me now.3
-
Boss: -We're firing one of our freelancers and you are taking over one of his projects.
Me: -OK, what is it?
Boss: Old POS project written in Java.
Me: -But I'm C# developer. I haven't touched Java in years!
Boss: -You'll manage...
FML I've managed to finish and fully refactor this piece of shit project.11 -
Current project:
A fairly simple and basic single page-ish project with no framework at all.
No backend or database.
No jQuery.
Plain old Gulp task, npm scripts and Webpack.
Some parallax and other scrolling effects.
Client is actually a pretty simple, cool and understanding guy.
This is too easy.
What is this madness??4 -
Completing 95% of a project is infinitely more difficult than completing 70% of the project.
I am still in college studying for an electrical major and my side projects are the only dev work I do, so I don't even have any excuses to not complete them, I just jump to the newest project idea I had and forget all about the old ones until one day, several months later, I look at the code I wrote, get disgusted by how terrible it is and lose all the remaining motivation to work on it.5 -
I just opened an old project in Android Studio, right after I had updated the IDE itself.
It compiled without any issues. I think I want to wake up now1 -
Legit considering quitting my job and going back to my old workplace.
Fucking getting real tired of fucking around with html and css on the daily.
The school is fucking crashing down on our shitty as web services. But my manager (as much as we love her) is forcing everyone to double time on a rather stupid project that keeps constantly changing on the daily.
I am so fucking tired of it4 -
Tuesday.
Director: we need to add our partner's project to our ci pipeline
CTO: we need to add ci to this repo, it should work via this tool (not the one we use now)
PM: we need to use this new tool, figure it out until Friday
TL: we need to move all our projects to this new ci tool, don't ask, the task is given by CTO
Me: okay
Friday.
Me: everything is ready except for this one old project
TL: we couldn't use it for one of our projects
PM: we had difficulties with the new tool
CTO: we couldn't add our partner's project to the pipeline
Director: *gives me a warning for being incompetent*1 -
It seems like the project I'm tasked to tweak last edited when I was 4 years old... 😏 I doubt is there any dinasour alive who used that generation's technology. :P4
-
This Android app is my coolest project because I did it on my own and it actually works! Well, my 3 and 5 year old sons think it's the coolest, anyway :)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...3 -
Today I am gonna start writing code in react to replace/improve an old silverlight project.
I need to show react is faster, easier and more efficient than angular.
Thumbs up if you like react and comment if you think I'm wrong 🙂9 -
Just decided to revive my old, dead and unappreciated project. Even bought a domain for it. So hyped!
...why am I doing this?5 -
First rant (well, first on devRant anyway)! So, I'm working on a project to refactor a decade old codebase so that all references to ip addresses are in config. It sucks. But I did find an ascii art fish in an old cron script, so that's something.9
-
I just did a code review on an old project of mine. 10k lines altogether. 5.7k TODO's. I can't even.4
-
my coolest project is one i am currently working on. its my 12 month old daughter. She challenges me everyday and gives me enough kicking to find the best solutions for all my other projects. every developer should have this muse.2
-
Code fuckup day or what?! After two weeks where I wasn't on my project and a co-worker handled it, I came back to my project and reviewed what he had done so far.
Me: "I don't understand how this new code part here can work?"
Him: "Uhm, actually, it doesn't, somehow."
Me: "..."
Then he had checked in his stuff with spaces while the whole project is with tabs. And variables that were used in a different way, but still under the old name, now completely misleading. Bypassing existing infrastructure and defines with "just for this case" hacks. But the best was tracking higher level state by peeking into lower level data buffers, even pulling out their data definitions into global header files - instead of using proper states in the higher layer itself.
NOT! IN! MY! FUCKING! PROJECT!!!
So I spent the day cleaning up the shit to fight off software rot right in the beginning.4 -
So the company I'm interning in just got a project in WordPress from an old client. I'm their "WordPress backend guy" apparently coz I'm apparently the only one who seems to know WordPress. The site has multiple malwares and they want to redesign the thing too. Work starts on Monday and now DevRant algo is showing me a lot of WordPress rants. Guess good times are ahead.4
-
Installed SonarQube and Snyk on the CI/CD of a 2.5 year old project that only had a linter enabled previously.
Practically zero problems found. One minor problem (same code in different branches), a few false positives, and a few possible problems in dependencies that I have no control over.
Now wondering:
Am I really that good or are those tools just shit?10 -
Having a big legacy project written in good ol' vanilla PHP 5.4, running not in a server but in a desktop PC powered by a Celeron CPU.
Turns out that old buddy serves the tools everyone uses to work.4 -
have you ever felt having bad code ocd that you feel like you really need to clean this old project that you got assigned to fix, but cleaning the whole project up would take too much time and it is just not worth it . But you feel like you really need to do it...3
-
$category = 'Story';
Holy shit it finally worked I finally got a private server up and running for an old game, after countless forum posts and broken links (note the form isn't that active anymore since 2010)
After finding a working server source you also need a client with the same version
Even though this was a pet project, it feels good to finally complete it. I might even try to build some custom stuff into it6 -
Don't you just love it when you have to debug someones years old project, who left ages ago and you see1
-
That fealing when someone that picked from the graves an old project that you've started when you were just a noob developer... and then you look at the code... and then the shame.2
-
So I took my old C# project "RotatingCube" for a spin and transformed the unreadable and inefficient mess into a different program, featuring better readability and more comments, with multiple cubes at once, without the shitty flickering.
I did that for school but it was quite fun to tinker with only outputting the differences to a previous output.
Check it out at https://github.com/filthycoding/...!
Next I just need multithreading for performance reasons. -
Damn I'm pretty hard hitting my limits here
My company asked me if I would like to work some extra hours because otherwise they don't make all the deadlines
But damnit asking 10+ hours a day from a junior web developer is quite a lot
😒 Especially if it's an old legacy project where I have to work on...8 -
Old PS2 controller + Windows 10 = Twin USB Controller, sensitivity working
Controller + DiRT 4/Project Cars 2 = still end up last against Easy AIs
Maybe I just suck at driving and playing real time games...
Well at least I don't spend $50 buying a controller...9 -
Me apprentice 18 years old in germany: I don’t want to go in another team
Also me in the new team after 2 days: playing with my new boss during work CSGO and say everyone we are to busy with the big project3 -
I am now the only experienced developer and the person responsible for the delivery of a project AFTER WE ARE ONE MONTH PAST THE DEADLINE! All because user wants to replace the old system with new system with all EXACT SAME FUCKING FEATURES!
-
Yesterday my docker build started failing for my .NET core project, but it worked on Windows!
Today I found a Github issue, 4 hours old, what fixes it? Downgrading my kernel, which I upgraded a few days ago to v5
I would never have discovered that on my own, what the hell1 -
Out of the blue this morning... little spaced out.
Open terminal. Navigate to my project.
$ svn update
Command 'svn' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install subversion
The fuck is wrong with me? I haven't used svn in like a solid 10 years. Old habits die hard I guess.4 -
Working on a C project right now, this is the only thing that comes to mind...
Good old printbugger.1 -
Note to self:
Fucking comment your fucking code
So I finally got time to work on an old project and now I can't figure out what does what.6 -
Boss: Why are you trying to build the old program?
Me: Because I need to determine behavior of why old program works with data that new program does not.
Boss: Does it affect the output?
Me: No, but...
Boss: STOP! Just filter it.
Me: Okay.
Boss: Go write new fun code, not work on old shit.
Me: Thank you for saving me from myself.

I recently started working on a 3 months old project, that was outsourced to two Indians genius. One of them left just before I arrived.
I had the chance to discover those guys were not using any version control system, just exchanging a zip file. I don’t even talk about the codebase, never seen such a mess …
Even better the project managers, were not using any IT program to follow the project advancement, but just Excel!!!
After a few days I realised that the remaining dev was not committing anything, the guy was always lying, (so many people died around him + some emergencies)
So, the guy got fired, but don’t worry management found new genius to save the project 🙂
Can someone tell me if outsourcing is really working?7 -
I spend the whole day decoding Assembly code for special formulas that we require for a current project.
And the client doesn't have them anywhere else.
There's only that old desktop application - written in assembly.
My Pc and I never felt so close before...
If it sounds like it was fun, it wasn't.
NOT. AT. ALL.1 -
I've been creating a game in Unity and I made sure to tell all my friends, but now every other day when I see them they ask me if they can play it. It gets a bit old, I try to explain this is a very long-term project and there's nothing to play until it's almost complete. Only a few of them get the memo.11
-
Finally had a weekend to myself to work on some projects. I got my hands on a Sonoff switch. Did a manual flash of some new firmware and got it setup on my crappy old washer to do a little DIY smart home upgrade.
Always nice to get to do a personal project 😊 Just wish I had time to tinker more.3 -
Something that really bothers me about the oop idea of "oop allows better code reuse" is the fact that I have yet to encounter a situation where I need to reuse old code for a new project.
And the code I do want to reuse I've put into a library and made genetic anyway. Something which can easily be done with any language supporting generic programming, object oriented or otherwise.6 -
From a Dev at my old place: Don't use git for such a small project, I think we should use email to send our code to each other.
Turned out that this "small project" was a piece for a larger project.
Also turns out there's such a thing as merge conflicts outside of git.
Our code was broken for 3 days once because of his shitty advice.2 -
The happy moment you start a new project a Find that you can use your old code, then realizing you don't remember how it worked but use it anyway.1
-
So this just happened. A friend whom I made a little project for came to me like "hey man that project thing just gives a white page". It's written upon the old version of a framework I'm still writing. After a few minutes I found out that it's failing to load all core modules. Turns out there was a file in the core modules directory with the .save extension. Never thought I'd have to take that into consideration in my code!
-
Ahhhh.. the great feeling of starting a new project at work after the stresses and health deterioration of maintaining old code bases.
-
Why invite me to a 3 hour meeting where my old manager just pretends I don't exist and is trying to push me out of the project completely?
He's just bitter because I asked my new manager advice because he was too busy trying to get a new job at a different company.. rather than being my manager. -
NNNNNGH IT DRIVES ME SO CRAZY WHEN I DO MY PERSONAL DEV IN GLORIOUS MASTER RACE LANGUAGES BUT THIS PROJECT FORCES ME TO SWITCH TO 10 YEARS OLD TECHNOLOGY THAT TAKES 10 YEARS TO EVEN COMPILE ON MY POTATO PC3
-
Me:To my new boss I think its fare we adopt version control for the project we working on.
Boss: No need just do what we hired you for.
Me:Its my second day of work and don't know how this will play out
Am beginning to dislike this boss he still sticks to old practices4 -
Looking through some code from a new project at my old job.
It seems they are sending off some audio files from interviews into an online transcriptions-service, and putting the result unsanitized into a string-concatenated INSERT-statement into the db.
I look forward to the demo, I’m going to yell “single quote Drop table users semicolon dash dash” -
Client: We are completely unable to plan a construction project successfully. We want you to use AI to do all of our project planning for us. Our requirements are that instead of needing to spend any money or time planning we just want to press a button and have a computer instantly put together all of our project plans for us. The program also needs to identify optimizations on it’s own and change all related plans enterprise-wide. All copies of the plans should be able to be kept up to date at all times so we’re never looking at an old plan again. We also want the ability to print.
Dev: …11 -
I like my work, don't get me wrong, but any time I need to work with this fucking 12 years old project that has so many conflicting branches, css that remembers float layouts, half of the files not being tracked, ruby dependencies that are a decade outdated I just want to quit.2
-
Here's my flow:
1. Sit at my desk and contemplate the Universe
2. Sort out specifics by pacing back and forward
3. Draw like a mad man
4. Copy an old project and change a few lines of code
5. Go home happy that the Universe is safe once again
;)2 -
Just opened a month old android studio project and now I'm wondering what the hell is going on. And later realize the importance of comments. :-(3
-
going over some old code in the project...
thinking what garbage is this?
oh oh it was junior me :(5 -
So now you want the old version? Now you want GIT? Now you want a branching model with CI? 1 year into the project?
FML3 -
So I just fixed about a year or so old bug by removing my solution entirely.
As very few of you will know, I work on/ off on a project called TG which accelerates cmd.exe
One of my oldest bugs in this project is that the buffer resizes real weird. If you adjust both the height and width at the same time, it goes into this weird infinite loop business.
As it turns out, cmd.exe handles that by itself just fine. I just removed my resize listeners and now everything is running smooth.

Many years ago two foolish young men found together to make an game with an old game making tool. The project didn't succeed, but the person stayed since. A good result i think ❤️

*opens the code of an old project still running today*
*see the horror spaghetti code*
*decide to modernize it with good code and practices learned by the years*
*can fucking decide where to start *
*réalise it is impossible *
*rewrite it from scratch in a few hours*
*be proud*
It's really rewarding to go back to old projects and give them a good hug. You réalise then you really got better5 -
Lets create new project!!!! Oh our favorite package is 5 major released ahead. It completely another piece of technology after 7 years of development. Lets use 7 years old package!!!

It's important to redo old projects and ideas, here is why:
I worked on a project about 6 months ago, it was mostly just a "coding challenge" and I worked on the project for 3 days and I didn't get it to work. But I started working on the project again from scratch 2 days ago and I got it to work this time!
The moral of this story:
Just making new projects makes it hard to see how much you've grown and improved. But redoing old projects (even if they worked) gives you a concrete representation on how much you've improved (and if you have at all😉)3 -
FUCKING HATE VUE 3
It's pointless, it's not an incremented version of Vue 2, it's basically a completely different framework, probably one nice to start a project with... But migrating from an existing Vue 2 project to Vue 3...
What the hell were they thinking!
first, setup() with all the logic and functions in it DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE to me!
second, your old DEPENDENCIES NO LONGER WORK!.. good luck finding replacements for EVERYTHING, and do the necessary adjustments to work with the LASAGNA CODE YOUR PROJECT HAS BECOME!!
PS: the update/upgrade PR has almost 300 changed files!!!!19 -

I love the first weeks after a job change. It's just like falling in love, everything seems to be perfect until you take off the pink glasses.
Have to wait until I'm assigned a burning project to have a full picture.
Actually I am in a burning project. Deadline in 2 weeks. Doing Bugfixes which do not require in-depth project knowledge, and... It's fine. All a matter of perspective. I also think that project based work suits me more than usual 15y old legacy enterprise shit. And I'm able to switch. From embedded C++ over hardware dev to fullstack .NET (I consider myself as a full-fullstack dev, able to do everything from hardware to frontend).
Topics such as IOT, medical, device engineering, machine learning. Wow.
It's my first company having >50 employees and multiple offices in multiple countries. I used to jump every 2 years from one shitty garage company to another.
Wish me good luck ✌️2 -
That bad feeling when you leave a project aside for a few weeks and then when you finally decide to continue it you don't understand the code you wrote...
I'm searching a solution for something I already solved once again. FUCK!5 -
Finally closed an Epic that was started on April of 2019 to migrated everyone off the old Jenkins server. Finally completed, nearly a year later and under a different project manager and director.3

So, here I am browsing steam for something new to play.
Thanks kwilliams for a solid 30 hours of gameplay 🤘
But anyway, I was just scrolling through and came across and old gem.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/...
And it got me thinking, if anyone else used to play this old bad boi around here.
It's not High Def or modern, although it does 1920x1080, but damn it's a trip down nostalgic lane.2 -
When my old boss from previous company called me to take on a project that their current developers didn't able to finish. I return to my old office like a saviour of the day 😝5

Very important lesson I learned while working with Xcode:
Always have multiple major versions installed and ready to be used.
Xcode 9 can't convert old Swift 2.2 project to Swift 4 and can't open the "old" project? Xcode 7 can help you.
Xcode 9 crashes randomly while moving top level packages? Xcode 8 can help you.
Yeah, always funny to find new bugs in Xcode...4 -
We are switching to an infinite scroll mode for our app. I told the backend dev in my project (we're just 2 people) I need an API to get more than one post at once.
He told me to use a loop to call the old URL 15 times.
...Not sure if stupid or just too lazy4 -
Anyone got interviewed by an 18 year old kid for a freelance project... like is he planning on paying me from his allowance or what5
-
I miss the old Version Control, copy pasting project folders with every single update, hiding them in different locations just in case some get deleted, then actually trying to find the latest one..... Good old days
Felt like them text RPG games with lots of endings1 -
You're asked if you know how to use git, you say you can but you can't.
You decide to change your entire codebase because you realized your previous approach was a bad idea.
You ask how to change the old repository-content for the new project, you receive answer but you can't get it to work, you don't ask again for help.
What's the logical consequence? Create a public GitHub-Project and dump the entire customer-project under NDA into it -.-* -
Why would anyone use -1 for true and 0 for false in a database.
Booleans people!!! FFS
Making migration of old project a real PITA4 -
Project configurations... why, for ffs, whenever i come to old project i need to deal with configurations, build systems, certificates, project settings. I want to write code not dedicate my life to Maven and making directories by hand for Android Flavors.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaa! -
I have a really old Toshiba NB200-10P notebook with Intel Atom CPU and 2 gigs of RAM and 32 bit architecture... It was made for Windows XP, and now it barely runs Windows 7... So I'd like to give new life to this old piece of hardware with Linux (for basic tasks like Office, and maybe coding with Notepad++)...
I really like Manjaro, but after they ditched 32 bit support, the Manjaro-32 community project seems a bit unstable...
So, could you devs please recommend some reliable - and somewhat good-and-simple-looking - Linux distros?20 -
My biggest challenge was trying to convince my old boss why things need to be done the way I'm saying and not the way he wants (of course, arch wise and not business wise)
After giving up, I ended up going back to collage, studying Masters in Business Administration just to know how managers think, took me two years, and now I'm in my final semester, even though I left my old job, I am now able to handle things in a better way in my current one regardless if I was arguing with general manager, or project manager, luckily clients are not allowed anywhere near me ... -
Reading through old post-it notes and found a TODO that says "fix code" with no indication of a project it refers to lol1
-
Sometimes I look at my old code and I wish I could go back in time and punch my self in the face for writing that shit
But then I look at it as I'm actually improving so guess it's ok?
Spent 4 hours fixing callback mess I had in my ReactJs project, making it all as Promise and async hope I don't fuck up this time -
"Hey I know we're doing Agile but, just real fast for some paperwork, I just need a quick estimate, nothing complicated, of the LOC to convert our decades-old millions-of-LOC project from 32-bit to 64-bit, just real fast like whatever you can come up with in 30 minutes"2
-
Entirely my fault. I was getting frustrated that the CSS I had copied and pasted from an old project was not appearing properly. It just wouldn't work. Spent an hour before I lost my shit and closed the IDE, to discover that I was saving the old project repeatedly and hadn't even touched the new project which was serving.
-
Whenever I cancel out old chunks of code that do not serve their function anymore, or that I commented out in early phases to make space for better functions, I feel dead inside. It's almost like if I was saying goodbye to a very old friend, who supported me through the project and reminded me of how I started it.
Than I notice how stupid and/or inelegant that chunk was, and feel better. 😂 -
There was a task to upgrade, refactor and rewrite azure functions project. It was assigned to guy who was about to leave the company. After 2 weeks at his last day at 16:50 he committed the changes. He literally copy pasted the old project into new file structure and left the building. FUCKING ASSHOLE.
-
Finally got rid of my old job I ranted about so much. Started a new one on Monday. A bit anxious and terrified (there is a lot to learn) but it feels good. The team is fun and they know what they are doing. BUT most importantly: they know how to plan projects and know how to intervene if a project is about to run out of resources. NICE.
I'll keep you posted on how it goes3 -
Nothing really successful, but someone once wrote an article about my old buggy version of JS select plugin...on website noone visits :( Anyway, I think, the new version is pretty good and fast and would be happy to see it somewhere, especially search is fast af.
I have one more project which could have been successful. Never finished, never ended and never used...no time for it... -
> mmmmh this old code I wrote for my previous job could be handy now, lemme just git pull the thing real quick
> clone the repository in my new pc
> can't deploy because I intentionally didn't commit any of my old credentials, no env files other than the example, and everything is smooth clean to prevent some dumb fuck like me from just grabbing the project and do whatever
There's an old IHateForALiving giving me the middle finger. -
I propose renaming the title "project manager" into "plim". Why? Well, there is an old soviet nursery rhyme:
I came up with a new word
A funny word called Plim
And I repeat it over:
Plim, Plim, Plim!
It jumps around shouting
Plim, Plim, Plim
Nobody cares about it
Plim, Plim, Plim -
I joined a a new company .. the Technical team leader .. is coming from a lawyer background.. and feel threaten by new technology and insist on using old technology so he feel relevant !
The project manager has a background of business management which I understand but .....
It's been 3 days and am asking my self if I made the right choice by joining such company ...3 -
I need an AI that can figure out how to compile this POS project at my company. Nobody who works here knows how to compile the damn thing. The last guy that might have known his computer was wiped. I am going to ask that people document their current build environments and how to build. That way 5 years from now I don't have to deal with this shit again.1
-
So I started at a new company about two months ago. I was hired as a Senior .net developer, which I am well qualified. I also told them that I did MVC but haven’t done react or angular.
So my first project with this company is building a react-native app. (Never done a native app either) The craziest thing is I am the most senior on this project too.
What is even crazier, I still work for my old company on the side, and the only .net I am doing is for them. And even funnier, my old company thought the reason I was leaving was to do more .net development.2 -
I got handed over a project that has hundreds of lines of commented codes, some dating back to 2013. I am then told not to delete those as we "might need them". WHAT DO YOU NEED A 4 YEAR OLD COMMENTED CODE FOR???1
-
Oof, scope creep
Come back to an 8 month old project and I can't update the website because something in webpack needs something in python to compile... Um why. Literally just a poster with some images and a markdown parser.
So I spent 5 hours and 850 lines of code later modernizing the code and... I have the same website again but now it compiles. Woo? -
Reviewing and explaining 1 year old bad application logic to your client because he asked for it and now he can't remember how the application work.
-
I currently work for my college for the web team. We are working on a year long project which is to update the college's old website to one that is not only more user friendly, but is also mobile friendly (unlike the old one). My job for the past week (with another week to go) has been to simply delete all HTML attributes that were used in HTML3, and this entire site was written using it.
-
My old boss who somehow has gotten his small team of 4 PHP development contracts with Vodafone and Tesco etc. No QA, no tests, no frameworks allowed.
Sets random deadlines and used to suddenly drop demos on me for projects I'd just started and he had no idea of the state of them. Needless to say one project I was so rushed with no idea what I was actually making (for real) that I got sacked. -
The person responsible for making layouts in CSS/HTML got moved from our project and now our team had been forced to improvise by ourselves until a replacement is found.
Suddenly all those old, untouched bugs seem very appealing.1 -
Looking at an old Java project, running java 1.6, test folder doesn't even exist and the "old but gold" java.utils.Date class is used throughout the whole thing. How do I initialise a new date again...? I actually just googled that :D At least the constructor parameters are named nicely... wait.. what...1

Check this out :
Lib-A need Lib-C version 10.0.2
Lib-B need Lib-C version 9.0.0

Lib-D need Lib-A some old version ..

Some other shit...my solution .. nuke the project start over and try to use as minimum libs as possible..2 -
Puts three months of work into this project; cronjob to ping 3 APIs at regular intervals, cleans, massive features extraction, dumps into PostgreSQL db. Got Django on top of that with a small neural net and interesting viz - absolutely gorgeous!
Can’t fuckin wait to showcase that.
Feedback: “is that the right blue? I think you have the old company logo! etc”

Never create a work around for assholes. It will eventually become their solution.
Man fuck this guy, this project is almost a year old and it was originally supposed to be a patch. But even with all my insisting, they never tried to move to the real solution.
Now this jackass brings it up and he's a hero, and I don't know what I'm doing. What a fucking way to start the week. -
I wish the retard to who wrote these programs before me had the decency to write some documentation. Even a few lines of comments.
Been working through this refactoring project for about a month now. It physically hurts to keep going through this guy's old code.7 -
Due to a service window, we were requested by customer to set up a separate instance of the same web application so they could keep working.
The separate instance was set up and all parties were informed.
Customer and project manager complain that people are still using the old instance, to which I replied I sent an email informing which instance should be used.
Their response: "You wrote to use the new instance, but you didn't write NOT to use the old one."1 -
Always fun to come back to an older project to update stuff only to find your IDE and SDK updates have broke your old code base and you now need to debug and update a lot more then you initially wanted to. 😣1
-
Ever feel like your boss is playing buzzword bingo with your project?
We have new project. Buzzword bingo words for us: microservices and cloud. We're moving our old, big, monolithic app to microservices.
And very strong demand that we keep all nasty solutions gathered in there for the last 10+ years working.2 -
The moment when your code is like,
Yeah I'm working, not throwing errors, but not doing anything closely related to the things I should do.
Fuck this construct, I'll recode the whole thing and stop using any two-year old legacy code, for this project -
Just found an old project where I tried getting a version of ubports to boot up as an AVD... Fuck me I really wish I could remember how I was going to do this...
Still can't find a supported device cheap enough :'-( -
You are almost done with your project. And lowest version of IE it needs to works on is 10 and that makes you happy! That means you are getting old because you remember the IE 6 days.1

So, started working in a nodejs/react personal project with an old friend. I code in linux mint, my pal always at windows 7 never worked in something different from php. From the very beginning I advised him to move to linux
Me: hey man, the backend is running now, pull the changes and `npm start`
Friend: ok so I need to install dependencies right?
Me: yup, easy peasy lemon squeezy
So after a brief(one week period) until my friend could install visual studio to get some deps installed
Friend: hey I ran `npm start`, it got stuck. backend does not start at all, no output messages, no error, no nothing
Me: FFS, that's why I told you from the start, "use any linux distro for this project" :(
Then for a couple of hours(4) trying to install a distro in his 7 years old laptop...
Me: Ok, let's call it a day, 7 tries to install this thing in your old machine is enough. did you not realize your HDD was really busted? in your 7 years with your laptop? this is BS that's why I could not install linux :|
Friend: I didn't, windows never showed me any problem, maybe windows is better than linux in that matter.
Me: GTFO6 -
Flask people
so I was given this old flask project, around 3k lines written in py2, the code is simply old and not refactored. So, it's pile of shit. Migrations completely botched as the original author created reference to live data in models.
Very strict line formatting resulting in backslashed ternary conditions.
Even saw manually formatted json responses... _line by line_.
My job is to clean this mess and eventually do as much as possible to freshen the whole project.
Currently just refucktoring the code as it's the only easy thing to do out of everything that could be done (it's still slow process).
Any tricks and tips? currently considering to try upgrading it to py3 but it feels like throwing gunpowder into already burning house.3 -
Me - Ooo I've got this idea ! This will fix this "No ones" problem in programming.
(Thinking this will change the programming for everyone)
Starts Coding......
Few minutes later ...Searching stackoverflow for silly syntax errors.
...Finds a 2 years old project from some guy, who already finished working on the idea and answering question as "This is a bullshit idea!, Never try to make something like this."
Me - (Suffering from existential crisis)2 -
I used to strive 7years back to become the company project manager. they agency was helping me to get there, and when they fired the old PM I thought "this is it!!!"
instead they hired another guy, which got me frustrated.
all that being said, I give that guy full credit for everything I know today. -
So today I started looking at an old project (site/api tester) I backlogged due to various blockers.
I started remembering things and after setting up the testing app, I realized it depended on an extraction app that I wrote before that. And this reminds me of the whole start of all this testing stuff going back more then a year ago.
It sorta felt like I just took the cover off a hole? And then remembered how deep it goes.
And thankfully I left myself documentation... Though took me a while to find and still looking... (tracing from 1 project to another) -
Working on a tiny new project, can't build DLL libraries from our old projects. Contain mixed version of .Net written in VB and C#
Asked our senior developer to help me out.
...
After an hour, he's still not able to build it.
...
So he basically implemented some features I needed on the fly...
😂
DLL hell is real! -
I NEED COFFEE HELP PLZ! :'(
I have a long time working on a project, since I started taking coffee in the mornings i realized that the coffee sucks..
So i looked for it and realized that old coffee was processed every day with the new coffee...
Anyways..
Im up to shitty project, shitty pc, shitty documentation, stress, pressure..w/e i don't care..
What I can't FUCKING stand is a disgusting coffee that tastes horrible! D:<
Is it too much to ask?? :'(6 -
Project is dammed, is broken, we complain about it for almost 3 months, daily, code is old and client is full of bad practices and is always searching for a way to blame us for his failure.
Administration decides that best solution is motivate meditation techniques on dev team1 -
Wow. All these weekly rants work so well with my current project lol.
A 4-5 year old iOS project, written in Objective-C with some jQuery thrown in to keep things interesting. Its the kind of codebase where you look at some code and think "what the....how....you know what nevermind". Everything has CoreData mangled into it somewhere which causes all kinds of issues. got search results from a web API? better save those to CoreData. Why? Who knows...1 -
Fuck AngularJS' scope fuckery. Yes it's legacy shit in an old project.
A minor change fucked up the model scope shitfuck thus leading to improper input model fuckvalues.
Go rot in pieces and perish.1 -
How is it called when I rant about something my colleagues experienced and I just supported his debug session? Third party rant? Anyway, here's the thing.
Other team built some project specific code right in the heart of their software, which in itself would be worth a rant. But as you might guess, it's getting rantier.
For a new project the same code is used, but needed some tweaks. Now guess what happened:
1) Someone took the code, refactored it, made project specific stuff configurable, everything works fine now
2) Someone changed the code completely for the new project, everything seems to work fine for 5 months, then the old project needed a new release 💣 -
Is it ok to hate your old code?
I always say to myself "WTF is this? There's a better way of doing this" when I have to make some changes to some older project.
But, I see it as a good thing, it means that I've improved a bit since then.3 -
Why the fuck does it happen every god damn time???!!!?!??!! Oh look the 5(0) year old designer created an Armageddon (layout) and went on holiday but that's okay cause it has been already approved by our sweet project manager WITHOUT SHOWING IT TO THE DEV TEAM FIRST. Fucking this fucking fuck fuck! FUCK. You deal with this idiots, i fucking QUIT bitch bye.4
-
Fell in love with it in high school but I had a strong bond with computers and technology early on. Done some C programming there. Had a project in ASP, Access and JavaScript. Old times 😃
-
I was refactoring a 4000 lines JavaScript file, turning whatever I could into components. It was a pretty old project that I ended up being one of the few wizards to actually know how most of it works.
At one point, I noticed that login into a user account redirected us to the dev-test server, even when working on a local Docker container.
I never quite understood the issue, but ended up having the bug mysteriously disappear.
Until it came back two months later, then disappeared again.
At one point, all of the dev team on the project (four developers, me included, and one project manager) was investigating the issue, and we never figured out how or why this was happening.
Just Symfony routes shenanigans I guess.15 -
Starting the Monday with a good old heap corruption in a c# project that uses only managed code.
Occurs on 2/3 PCs.
Today is going to productive :/ -
Project managers moved all the tickets around and then got mad that we couldn't find them to log our time.
Mass mutiny about logging time in general and expected dev hours per week.
They returned the tickets to the old system at least -
Your time is better used somewhere else, let the intern write the documentation. While the project was transitioning to a whole new team with no one from the old one.1
-
I just started a new project with a new client who once off-handedly mentioned offering us stock options if the site is successful. He's paying us real money to do the site and I hope he doesn't pull the old "Oops, I'm out of money. Would you like stock options?" move. Thanks to hellobonsai.com contract language I think we're covered.2

Starts search and replace.
Trys to replace a type in the whole Project.
Syntax Check: lol no, apparently everything is broken now, good job
(literally my whole project was marked red)
Reverts changes
(project still marked red)
Syntax Check: lol what? Your code already looked like shit before, won't let you compile this.
It was a bug which breaks the syntax check after big replace requests. Had to start a new project and copy my code step for step, so it didn't break again. However I've forgotten to replace the type before I copy...
Another story regarding this shit:
Renames Variable
IDE: oh, let me help you by replacing all old var names with the new one
Agrees
IDE: oh shoot, didn't know it could break things
Wants to revert
IDE: did you think I would go through this mess again?! Do it yourself!3 -
"Some time ago I wanted to rewrite my old project. I saw code without comments and cried. Cried so much."
Programming teacher in college
People who teach us programming usually write a quicksort every year for 5-10 years. It is sad af :( -
My old client, contacted me for a new project. He contacted at the right time when I'm getting rejected for jobs and just simply being bored with college. Excited to have extra cash to have fun at college and have a working purpose.2

My favourite tool currently is Gulp, although that sentiment is slowly eroding as I integrate it into a project that is 10+ years old and follows few standards with regard to css and javascript files. At least it is a quiet period in my workplace at the moment and it will improve development workflow when I'm done3
-
Node developers are something else, you can work on a project that is 2 years old and find abandonware dependencies that were last updated 4 years ago.4
-
It's really sick how beginners start to code in Javascript and CSS, and their complex frameworks, without even understanding atleast the paradigm first. Googling your way up can be fine for smart ones, but as least time optimal this learning method sounds, it's as dangerous and non-productive too.
Also once project gets to a certain level, it's practically impossible to revisit and refactor old codes in front-end languages which kills the maintainability. Views?3 -
I find it hopeless to achieve anything with applications aimed at non-devs, such as PowerPoint. How the hell can it be so difficult to use the same theme in one presentation as in another? If it had been code, I would just have copied the XML, XAML, include, link, script or whatever code in whatever language on whatever platform from the old project and pasted it into my new project. But with "user-friendly" apps I have no control of how anything actually works. I give up, my presentation will be unthemed. Maybe it's for the better anyway, less distracting graphics.5
-
Always double check the code you're sending to the teacher after finishing a school project.
I once sent them an old version of the code that had useless comments and debug messages everywhere. Some of them "politely" pointed out the fact that I really hated the subject, that it was pointless and that the assignment was way overcomplicated for first year students.1 -
Fuck not-so-old-but-deprecated-nontheless-software! And their also deprecated dependencies.
We're using a year old dotnet version which apparently only works with a specific libicu version.
Then there is node.js, but it has to be version 6 otherwise nothing will work.
If you wish to use VS code you have to manually install a specific version of the c# extension and keep it from auto-updating because project.json is deprecated and not a thing anymore.
Migration is not an option, it fucks the whole project.
I mean it is a great project and all, but the dependencies are driving me crazy!
Why does stuff get deprecated so quickly? -
I need to finish a project where the boss is a nice woman (maybe 55 years old), and her assistant (30-35 years old). Guess who is always asking about any single button? Who is always saying "But that label is ugly", "I don't understand that", "Maybe we need some new features..." Yeah, the assistant. She hates us and we hate her1

Eclipse deleting my entire project, roughly few thousand LOC and a lot of assets. (Probably my silly mistake, though I don't know what I did)
Good thing I had a half a week old back up2 -
I can't get over the fact that my company downgraded the project from Elixir Phoenix to nodejs express.
I asked them why, they told me, the elixir is difficult and blablabla. In my resume, I did mention I have the experience for 2 and a half years (phoenix one year) , I can do that. and previously the senior here used elixir for scalibility , etc. Personally, the system he built weren't bad at all.
now in nodejs , with the async await promise shit.
but 'we prefer old tech' they say . old is gold they say .
Wait nodejs isn't old. To me elixir is like Ruby and Erlang had sex and gave birth to it and named it elixir.5 -
Every time there is a new project, we programmers swear to ourselves that we will code it better this time. We get elated that we do not have to deal with the tech debts piled up in the old module.1

Normally when I revisit an old project feel like tearing out my awful old code and rewriting it all - not today; today I feel like I am backsliding. I sidelined my personal project months ago when my real work got busy.
I have spent the evening discovering all the cool shit the project does and wondering if I'll ever get my head around it all again.
Looking forward to many nights tinkering and getting my memory back. -
Never realize how much you hate yourself until you dive into code on an old project.
Damn comments that mean nothing 😣2 -
Best: realizing that development could be a career and switching to it as a major
Worst: first dev job working on a 15 year old legacy visual basic project with over 3 million lines -
When I was literally sat down by two women VPs old enough to be my mom in an actual corner of a room like I was a child and accused of messing up a project when what really happened was the project manager saw me as a threat to her upward mobility and made up stuff about me. That went on for 2 solid hours. All that was missing was the bright lamp and the threat of no dinner before bedtime.2

I dont understand how am i not fired. I literally dont know how to do shit in this legacy 30 year old junkyard code. I am literally alone working on this project on a giant codebase and have no one for help. The project is burning on fire and scrum master is talking shit for breaking deadlines and i cant do anything about it. Why dont they just fucking fire me that would be such a huge relief bro40

I'm looking for a hobby project during winter as I can not drive my motorbike during that time. Anyone has a good idea?
Maybe I could start with my old business plan idea, but I would for sure need people to help me.6 -
The moment when ur almost going to finish a project, but u stumble upon this module/library/framework. And u start a side project. And slowly ur side project becomes main project and ur old project stays incomplete.2

I've learnt a lot over the years. There's nothing more than working on an old project to remind me of that.1
-
I ran `git rebase` on a shared branch and pushed it to the origin. It messed the whole history. I tried a few things to fix what I did (I don't remember the commands I tried) but I only made it worse.
The final result? Even though I was new to the project, every old commit in the history was changed to include my name as the author of that commit.
Lesson learned the hard way :hands_down_emoji:3 -
Legitimately lost an old very terrible project. But I didn't have to deal with it anymore so it was ok. Just called it no longer maintainable. I was so convinced it was gone that when I found it 6 years later I finally realized "losing" the project was my mind just protecting itself from insanity.
-
WTF is wrong with with you VS?!111 I only updated these efing NuGet packages and my whole project goes down the toilet? Don't tell me these files are not there!! THEY ARE!!!! I SEE THEM!!!
...ohh i forgot, my fault! these files in my packages folder are the new ones and YOU STILL WANT THE OLD FILES BECAUSE YOU FORGOT TO UPDATE YOU FUCKING PROJECT FILE! -
Please don't try to decipher your code from 5 years ago, it's a mistake. Thought it would be a great idea to bring an old project back to life. Turns out it is not. Not when I can't understand my own code...3

Old one but popped into my mind today,
during 3rd year project, when all computer science students were mixed together,
I wrote the design / implementation doc
had a lot of acronyms as it was a technical course
referenced VS IDE
Idiot on team came along and decided to expand these acronyms
IDE became Intercompany Data Exchange

I was put on some old forgotten project this sprint... looks like someone injected a shitload of heroin right into their frontal lobe and though it was a good idea to write a framework. Fuck.

Finish my studies.
Find a (half)decent job.
Build the Linux distro I need to start the real project.
Fund the startup I've been planning last months of 2017 before the tech gets old. -
It's 4:00 AM here, and I decided to go through my old project where I had put my maximum effort, it is a PHP Project, sadly not in production, I had built it from scratch, the sad part is password hashing, I had to go through 3 different files before the actual password is getting hashed, password_hash($pass, PASSWORD_BCRYPT), I am feeling so stupid right now I can't even describe in words, ok bye

Looking through old audio code I wrote. Found these macros. Will most likely reuse for a new project. It works damnit!
Do you feel lucky?!7 -
Old but gold.

"Client is the one who doesn't know why he wants a baby." -
Have a side project going to rebuild some of my old projects in rust, I’ve really been enjoying that experience.

After 12 hours I've managed to delete old and obsolete code from my project... Well, from part of it... Okay, small part... From 10% of it...1

Trying to build a 4-5 years old project (starting with Dockerfile builds). Fixing build errors feels like fighting windmills...
wtf. It was working perfectly fine 3 yeas ago!!
All the more motivation to start using nix for project builds.... Docker simply isn't reproducible enough...8 -
That big moment of relief: had a project idea I was way too excited about, that involved a bunch of things I have no idea how to do. I don't have any spare time to do the project, but I wanted to do it so bad. Turns out there already is quite a good version of what I wanted to do. Now I don't have to worry about when and how to do it.
For the curious ones: I wanted to use an AI to detect grains and scratches on old images and have it automatically assume from the areas next to it what color they should be filled in with. -
The lost his I've worked in a row were 74 hours straight had a deadline and a project to finish back in uni. So I only got off of my laptop for lunch and dinner and natures call. I slept for 12 hours the next day...
Got an A on the project and got through the deadline....
Good old days -

I actually debugging a feature i made..
And i just realize well, this project is already 8 months old and i cant remember what other features i made. -

Usually I come here to rant but this time I want to appreciate a technology which many programmers loves to hate: the old .NET Framework.
It may not be the most cutting edge or performat technology but it makes dealing with legacy code such a breeze.
I had to work on an old .NET Framework 4.5 project and all I had to do was opening the .sln with Visual Studio and I was ready to go, in the meantime Node.js projects unmaintained for few years easily succumbs to missing packages and breaking changes making maintenance a PITA.2 -
I asked this on Twitter, but I get the feeling that I might get more responses here and I'm really curious to know what people's answers are.
No judgement question: As a developer, when you’re working on a project that involves something you’ve done previously, how often do you check if the way you previously did it is still the recommended way before referring to your old code to accomplish the task?7 -
Other dev in my department thought it was okay to comment out the latest version of jquery lib that was used in the project and replace it with about 2 year old version to make his feature work. He did not informed anybody about this and today when build was tested, blame was on me because the feature i implemented does not work. I found issue was because of old jquery lib he put.
Funny thing is, his feature does not work with latest jquery version.
I guess it's gotta be either me or him. -
Kinda slow day, let's read some of the old test specs in preparation for the next project...
zzzzzzzzz......
Oh, look at the time! Let's just finish that tomorrow.. -
Just got excited about maybe using rethinkDB for some new project.. 10 minutes later I stumble upon an old notification that it's shutting down.. well...1

When you're trying to fix a bug in your project and realize the problem is a bug in the platform your project is built on.... FML

Searches mailing lists for the problem
-- Hours later --
Finds that bug might be fixed in the new unreleased build.

Installs release candidate of new build.

Still broken.... *Facepalm*
Now to try an old build and see if that works...2 -
For the first time I work for an old and absolutely massive company. I have never seen systems so byzantine and so outdated ever before. With how the project management on top of it all has been going so far I'm really impressed that anything gets done at all.2
-
I haven't had to work with much legacy code other than mine. I always wonder what I was doing every time I have to fix something in an old project. At least it verifies I am learning and improving my programming skills.
-
Just got out of a meeting where they revealed to me that I will be the only dev on this project and I'll need to update the entire thing to a more modern coding standard.
But the project is 10 years old... and is massive... Why do they hate me so much? -
To all who use CSS:
Do you vertically align using flexbox or some weird old hacky method? I just used flexbox throughout a personal project to find out it doesn't work on my mom's computer...
Sorry if this question is too serious for this, but it really bothers me :D12 -
Today we picked an old (6 months old) iOS project back to add some features. We clone repo and run `pod install` to pull the dependencies.
There seems to be a bug with FBSDKCoreKit (facebook SDK) and the only solution is to delete the Podfile.lock
if we do this, it will pull the new version of every dependency, and the public API of each dependency is broken. Meaning we have to spend about 18 hours+ just to make this shit compile.
Fuck this shit!! -
Stitching old frameworks / libraries together...
What a lovely joy.
An override here... Testing if it runs.
Oh lovely, shitty shaded jars.
Creating other project for shitty shaded jar.
An override here, an override there...
Oh we need some system property to unfuck JVM upgrade...
Since it's shaded, need to add overrides for the non shaded and shaded variant...
Done...
Back to framework / library....
Another override, another system property...
Its seemingly endless.
Stitching together old shit with new shit to get JDK 20 plus running.
I hate everything. -
Before get get source code for freelance job, the person who cantact me say the job is to continue the project for some update and tweak.
The UI from design is beautiful and he gave good explaination for the project and the update, continue to conversarion, negosiation and deal.
but he is not the IT guy and also the project is not his work or something that he do previosly. All the person who work on that project is already leave and not contactable.
And here that I get:
- source code
- domain cred.
And here what's missing:
- documentation
- .env file
- db backup / old db cred.
- server and hosting cred.
And after some hour of learning the code I find out that:
- latest commit was 2 year ago and different from production version.
- most of the branch is RnD.
- the code have many wtf/minute lol
And for now I still re-negotiate with the person who give me the project with 2 suggestion from me.
- continue with this code with condition, he need to search for the missing part at least backup db or documentation.
- recreate the project with more time
And here's one funny part of the code.

Been working on an Android app for some time. Silly me too lazy to use VCS. Anyway, one day android studio just could not build my project and errors that should not be errors popped up everywhere and nothing I did fixed the problem. Somehow my project got corrupted. 3 hours later of googling and trying to recover my project I had to resort to creating a new project and manually port the old files in one by one :( but all I have to say is WHAT THE FUCK ANDROID STUDIO3

I tried to build an old outsourced project with a sky high js stack and it's just breaking everywhere. I believe rewriting it in another stack will be faster than figuring out this mess.1

That moment when your project manager tells you he never heard of a technology, then gives you his old project to redo using that tech....
-
So. As some of you may remember. I got a new job. However! I didn't end up taking it. They ended up terminating my current boss and gave me his job (and salary to boot).
They then told me to begin rebuilding the department and expanding it, something my old boss was not a fan of.
What tips do you guys have for building and managing a team? I've never ran one before. So I'm looking for advice on a project management platform. We are a C# shop so If it has nice integration into VS all the better.
Thank you and rant on! I am sure I will have some ranting about hiring and junior fuckups soon!2 -
Me, an apprentice, got to contribute towards a project for the business.
I only have access to the git of that particular project, no access to the other projects, databases or sourcecodes.
Thing is, we basically have to redo an old programm to access and work with the database, so having access to the sourcecode of that or access to the database would be very very helpful.
I have to guess the attributenames of the tables and what the code looked like that assembled all the data together for the overview.
I feel incredibly unprepared for this. -
I want to learn Spring framework. A bit of research shows that spring boot allows me to skip all the painful xml configuration and generally makes life a bit easier. However, what if I have to maintain an old spring project in near future?
So,
a. Should I learn spring before spring boot
b. What is the best resource for the above?3 -
Looking for some advice from anyone who has used and transitioned away from Material-ui (React).
https://material-ui.com/
Tasked with removing the Material-ui used in our react project. Old team took shortcuts like using these types of frameworks at every step and the software is brittle.
Any advice from anyone who has ripped Material-ui out of a project.
We are doing this to move away from CSS-in-JS and this is conflicting with every fucking element in the fucking project.
<TextField> with it's special internal props
<Buttons> with its fucking "classes" prop that one take fucking CSS-in-JS
Any advice or just say some random shit or post a GIF for the lulz.
Peace.2 -
Today I started tearing off some parts of the external wall of an old abandoned wooden house, built either in 1860s or 1930s. Surprisingly, the HTML is still very solid, except for the parts it was supposed to rot.
My project is on!!!
While it would be freaking cool to live in a renovated and modernised 150+y old house, a nearly 100y old house is still good enough!
I already imagine myself WFH there...3 -
Starting a project for work and realized it would be a good idea to use a framework as by my initial anticipations i see this growing fairly complex. I choose to go with Angular 1.x because I'm lile "hey i know that already", but there's one teensie problem--it hit me that i haven't looked at Angular so long that I have no fucking clue how to start up an Angular project from scratch properly. Oh well, time to dump an old project in the public folder and figure this shit out one error at a time
-
Android studio is a fucking demon that clings to your projects' soul.
>> Was working on project "a"
>> Thought of doing something different, but didn't wanted to create a whole new project or integrate changes here, so simply copied the project in a new folder "a_copy".(even copied the cache for faster build)
EXPECTATIONS :
1) i will be simply working on a copy of the project.
2)every changes made in a_copy will remain in a_copy.
3) when trying to build and run , my old app will be updated with new changes.
4) And if those changes doesn't fit, i will be simply removing a_copy files, going back to unaltered project "a" .
5) Building and running project "a" will update my previously updated app back to old state
REALITY :
1) ANY CHANGES MADE INTO PROJECT a_copy ARE REFLECTED BACK TO PROJECT "a" ! EVEN WHEN PROJECT "a_copy" IS CLOSED!
2) NO CHANGES OCCUR IN "a_copy", it remains in the same state as that of "a_copy", before all those changes got reflected!!
WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? its like studio treated the whole project copy as some windows shortcut?!?!1 -
So the project I'm working on atm and ranted about a couple of days ago... There is absolutely no documentation and the code is at least ten years old.
At least I can contact the old dev, but he's slower at replying, than reading the code through and figuring it out 😐1 -
I only prefer { on same lines if not used for class constructors & try catch blocks..
Other than that, I adapt to the existing codebase styles, to not fuck up things further, even if it makes no effing sense (old project, styles & best practises changed 'a bit')..
So I guess I'm being influenced most by the old code and pass devs on the projects..1 -
If you guys are ever looking for a chance to shine in the eyes of people you don't respect, may I humbly suggest multithreading a 20 year old project that uses COM and global variables?
I didn't need that hair anyway. -
Used to love our old severity grading methods on my old project. Traffic light system worked a treat. Defect raised... Have we seen this before? Green light
Never seen it but it's on stack overflow? Amber light
Not on stack overflow? Red light and most definitely an "environment fault" -
New ERP project has been going for 1.5 years. Project team comes to me asking to create an import process from old ERP to new ERP in 4 months, oh we need data loaded into Test today so we can complete end-to-end user testing. Project team doesn't have any requirements documented or know what data is needed in new ERP. I have never used/seen either ERP system. Project team keeps changing what is required in the new ERP weekly, and they don't understand why all the imports into new ERP are bad.
-
XHTML, I had to work on an old project that was developed around it with IE 11 in mind, many bullshit limitations where a hassle, from all the tech, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Developing with workarounds was the norm. Never gonna develop with it.
-
Comment in our code, followed by 3 identical SQL queries with only the table name different (Admin, regular user, old regular user).
Then we duplicated the entire project as it being a contract first webservice prevented us from changing it's signature to accommodate the needs of a new application.2 -
Im creating a "settings" functionality of sorts, unique per "account"
Ideally I'd create a new table, FK it with the Accs table with each Setting variable being a column
But im also inclined to just turn it into a JSON and not bother with N columns for it specially since arrays are involved in the settings
Could version it to ensure that if Settings change on code-level, old accs with old settings dont get fucked up
Now this is a pet project so im free to experiment, not bound by high level design documents
What do y'all prefer/recommend? JSON<->Settings Obj or plain old Table/column with FKs9 -
My first dev project was back in the third grade. I made a simple (and hideous) HTML website. No CSS, no JS, just plain old (and I mean old) HTML.
Showed my whole class, there was much awe and wonder.
</end story>2 -
So at the end of our sprint retrospective we (me and one other dev) apologize to the project owner for the fact that QA had to happen on dev for a few days because the database changes were not properly applied by the DBA. It was a one time thing, a little weird but not a big deal.
A few hours later we get a call from a new DBA saying that the project owner said that we wanted the old DBA off our project. So now we sound like assholes ruining a guy's self confidence and made working with him awkward as hell.
Thanks, project owner. -
Didn't know it feels so great to take the 4:30pm shuttle back home. I played with my 4 year old, had tea with my wife, tinkered around my personal project, watched a YouTube video on microservices, and to top it all dined together. If only I could do this everyday.
-
Is there some sort of tool where I can put in a package.json and it show what the latest version of each can be used or which package(s) is blocking any upgrade?
Have a project that has lots of dependencies but they are very old and some maybe deprecated or are preventing new libraries from being installed5 -
<ideaForTheFutureOfProgramming>
I wish there was a way for PROgrammers with Jobs to share their work with someone who does not have a job, but yet need practise. I think in the future someone could post a part of a project to a website and someone could finish IT and return it to them. The person posting the project could also optionaly give something in return. (money, money on steam) This way newbies get practise and experience, while people can get work done. This was thought up by a 15 years old boy.

When my boss wants me to fix bugs on a very old project because they want to bring it back into production since "there was a project that already did what you propose".
-
I'm needing an idea for a new project. I began tinkering with one of my old C# projects and I'm just **disgusted** with the amount of crap in there.
What do you guys think, should I finish it or move on?
Any good ideas on how to find another idea for a new project?3 -
Had to fix some bugs in some really old ASP code today. Need Front Page Server Extensions which doesn't work after XP. Spin up a VM, install XP, IIS, FPSE, then we need Visual Studio 2003 because the project won't migrate. Turns out - installing 'Visual Studio 2003' is a prerequisite for installing 'Prerequisites for Visual Studio 2003'. Cheers Microsoft 😯

Git: "Your local changes to the following files would be overwritten by checkout. [...]
Please commit your changes or stash them before you switch branches.
Aborting"
Fucking nitpicking, that's not "Aborting", that's meant to be:
"Dear user, would you like to overwrite your current changes, even more so as you are currently in a so-called detached head state anyway, as you obviously just checked out an old tag to try a temporary rebuild of an old project state."
Yes, the build targets are checked in, as this can be very useful in some scenarios.
It's just! some! CSS! from the SCSS!
Stop "Aborting"!4 -
I got relegated to updating an old project. It takes just 35 lines to do what we can write as a single liner in the new one.2
-
when you merge changes from other branch, made by other team, and see that huuuuge old project is now basing on dependency injection instead of one singleton- manager approach. Even merge conflicts look beautiful!
-
I love documentation and git stashes.
Old project haven't touched for months, now need to pick it been up again...
Well I left Mueller a nice doc that has all the rationale and project setup structure.
Also detailed notes about how to run certain things and what needs to be done.... Although lots of files
.. Didn't really cleanup before switching focus...
But better then nothing!!!1 -
Found my old project that deals with algebra in multithreading fashion
Just pushed it to github
Have a look at https://github.com/rational-kunal/... -
Gotta love working on a project that is over 13 years old, was made with Java 1.5 and creates HTML and JavaScript that is put together on the server side with string builders.

The Phoenix Project made me really excited about DevOps - but I see comments about it being old logic. Why isn't it used everywhere then?2

Old but gold. The Expert sketch A.K.A. how it feels to be a developer during a project meeting. https://youtube.com/watch/...
-
So here's the thing.
I'm a junior-developer in a small company and have quite few experience working on big company projects. We have this old massive project which is not very well written. At all. A couple weeks ago I finished small cms project which lets you deploy sell sites. And now my manager assigned me to refactor this old project which is thousand times more complex then the one I developed to use the same concept as mine.
I have no experience managing other programmers, I don't know how are you supposed to separate tasks and how to plan all project till the end. I've never worked in a team where you have lead developer and who gives you technically explained tasks. Mostly it's just "place a button here to export this graph. And please be fast, it shouldn't take more then an hour." when in reality you only spend hour trying to figure out what tables to use and how this graph was created in the first place.
I'm overwhelmed and totally stuck.2 -
I found my old ppt for my senior year project (A hackerrank or leetcode clone).
My love for minimalistic graphics started back then. -
My last days at work before changing job. I am an angular expert, and I have contributed to build the first angular enterprise project for my business; during my last 20 days you know what I am doing? Maintenance on a pretty old GWT project that nobody wants to care...1
-
actually it wasn't mine. But it affected me. So we had a project website on wordpress and wanted to rewrite the theme. everything went well to the Point of production. Site is fine locally, at testing and on stage. On production we still see old, a bit broken old version, but only on homepage. Wtf. Nothing helped. After couple of hours later we found out, that the admin was updating php version and he left html shot at production, which was taking over.

Wanted to start a little project of writing a website from scratch with a given template. No framework, just a basic thing. Apparently I've already done some work, long ago. And of course, I don't understand several parts anymore that are written. All knowledge and context gone. fuck...
At least I've realized I went for BEM css, instead of my utility css approach nowadays. Now the css has become hard to change, without accidentally breaking things. Also no git, surely because it was "just a small thing". Almost about to delete and redo. Fuck fuck fuck!1 -
Any tips for onboarding a new joinee to a couple-month old Django back-end project and eventually take it over, as my tenure ends?
The newbie is from a theoretical CS background and only knows very basic Django.
It's gonna be fine, I know; I'm just not sure how to go about handing over the project since even with coding best practices and detailed comments and a README.md, there's still a lot of stuff happening in the background that I know only because I've worked with it daily.3 -
Anyone else planning to raise buried projects from their grave on New Year's Eve....? :P
P.S.- might come with a resolution or two while at it!1 -
Began working on an old project at work today. It has been about 6 months since I last touched it and 10 months since I began working here. No one that works here knew how to get the project running on anything other than one specific computer in the office...i work remotely. So instead of remoting in I finally figured out how to run it on my computer!
*crash*
Turns out it only runs on vista.... -
At this stage, I feel like I'm too old to setup a new project and setup a database and write migrations and all that. I just wanna all that setup for me and I do something less mundane. It's probably why I don't start any new projects anymore.5
-
the time when android studio sucks.
tried using an updated version of the library and it's still working with the old.
downloaded the latest from github, added as a project dependency and it's still not working. 😑4 -
Be interrupted by request for help. Needed help is much more interesting than my main project because 1) need for it is so clear 2) and it's skunkworks without stifling PM oversight. If result of helping is deemed good enough it becomes my main project and old project gets another lead dev or is on hold until I get back to it. Usually this cycle repeats around 1,5 years.
-
Still working on this oldass project. Casting enums to different enums.. longass methods call another longass methods at the end...

Should I start a new project or re-do an old one? 🤔
The old one is actually being used by people, but I've been modding that damn game for years now...1 -
Coming home fully energized to work on a collaborative project, turn on linux pc (quite old, but works best with git), open github, start git pull, open vs code, click on reminder to download new version -> open new chromium tab (takes longer than normal...?), open start menu

....
? ... pc frozen😔😥
forcing shutdown, restart ... wifi gone😓? oh come on!!😑😣4 -
At job. I open old project I don't make. Nice i made with scss for clarity ! That guy put all is css in a scss file and compile them ... For fuck sake1

For the old school gamers out there, today I realized that the method by which the Temporal Security Annex detects temporal disturbances in the game The Journeyman Project is, effectively, unit testing time itself.

Update of previous post
I just got assigned to a project.
Project-specific training is designed to take up to 20 days.
I got materials, videos, and a person who is in this project for a long time to supervise training and introduce me to the project.
Only problem is that the project apparently uses 5 years old version of base framework. -
Spent most of my day trying to create a new project that looks like the rest of our old projects. A quick GitHub template would go a long way please.
-
I know it doesn't really exist in one solution, but I need management software to keep track of customers (crm), projects, products, licensing and contracts, and time keeping. Right now we are using MSCRM (ugh), and old homebrew project/time tracker written in Perl spaghetti (double ugh), email (sigh) and handwritten notes (kill me). Now I suddenly find myself with a budget (somewhat) and the authority to actually fix things. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm interning at a 40yr old tech company which develops network/app monitoring tools. Was put on a customer project where I had a bit of work on the UI. Fairly simple task, except the code was in jQuery... Fml :(2

Thought I found the perfect library for a personal project but it's 8 years old and has absolutely zero documentation..

Goddammit, newb here is busy in an old project of mine. I don’t have time for guidance and he’s just going to fuck things up now. Pretty sure about that.
Who will be the one cleaning up the mess next week?
Me!1
