Client: We have a HUGE security problem.
Me: *thinks about any possible vulnerabilities* What is it?
Client: A user can take a picture of our website and steal our content.
I’m done for today.36 -
This is fucking annoying with some clients.
Client calls:
Me: Hello, how can I help you?
Client: *explains problem*
Me: *tells possible solution*
Client: you sound young, could you connect me to a more senior person?
Me: Sure.
Collegue: Hello, how can I help you?
Client: *explains problem again*
Collegue: *gives same solution as me*
Client: Oh uhm but that's the same solution the boy I had on the phone before you told me.
Collegue: Yeah......?
Client: well he sounded so young...
Collegue: Being young does not equal being inexperienced/less knowing about something.39 -
A rare bug appeared. It was my duty to finish it.
SH = Manager
SH: So when do you think you can finish the task?
Me: I still have to analyze the problem. Give me a moment and I'll get back to you.
SH: Alright.
*An hour later*
SH: *Approaches my desk* Have you found the source of the problem?
Me: Not yet. Please give me some more time.
SH: Ok.
*An hour later*
SH: *the approach* You found it yet?
Me: Yes, I've found the the source of the problem, But... *explains the problem and thus concluding that it's a complicated bug*
SH: Can you finish it by tomorrow?
Me: I'll do the best I can but I am not entirely sure if I can finish it by tomorrow.
SH: OK great!
*The next day*
SH: *Le approach* Hey I have a colleague here that may be able to solve the problem, he has skills with XYZ. Ok, I will leave you two at it then. *the leave*
Helper: So can you tell me about the issue here?
Me: *explains the bug and the source of the problem*
Helper: Have you tried solution A?
Me: Yes sir, but it yields a different output... *explains what happened with solution A*
Helper: Well, that won't work. What about solution B?
Me: I've tried that, too. *Another lengthy explanation*
Helper: Welp, ok. I'll get back to you on that.
(...But he never came.)
*A few hours later*
SH: *A.P.P.R.O.A.C.H.* Hey I have this team lead from another department. I think he can help you out on this one. *L.E.A.V.E.*
Helper 2: What seems to be the problem?
Me: *Explains again with all the solutions I tried but failed*
Helper 2: Wow. That really seems to be a complicated problem.
~~
Me (In my head): -_-
~~
Helper 2: Listen, I need to get back to my team. I'll keep you posted if I happen to find a solution for your problem alright?
Me: Alright thanks.
*Towards the end of the day*
SH: *APPROACHHHH* Have you resolved the bug yet?
~~
Me (In my head): You made me spend half the FUCKING day explaining to these people who didn't even give a piece of FUCKING SHIT to contribute to the problem and you are asking me if I am done with this FUCKING BUG? FUCK YOU, YOU SON OF A -
~~
Me: No, it is not finished yet..
SH: You have to finish this because we don't have tomorrow.

I recorded it for a friend two years ago!9 -

First day on the phone as a support guy!
Before the first call came in I thought like 'please no email related issues as that's the one thing I suck at!'
Fair enough, first call:
Me: hello, how can I help you?
Customer: well, we've got this email problem...
Me thinking: MOTHERFUCKING FUCKING FUCK WHY ME 😭
Me: what seems to be the problem?
Damn, really?!9 -
That moment when you finally solve your problem and you can close your browser with 20+ tabs of searches for your error message. Feels damn good.2

When you show the senior developer your clever solution to a problem and they come back with "you can also do XYZ" and his solution is much more elegant. Appreciate your superiors kids.4

Sales manager: Hi all, we are launching a new internal hackathon. Form up a team with the right expertise to help with address the problem statement and get going!
Me: what’s the problem statement?
Sales manager: you have to sign up first. There’s proprietary company info with our plans for next year involved. You have to agree to terms and conditions before continuing. Legal say so.
Me:
*signs up*,
*fills in docU-sign*,
*clicks through 3 other screens*
Ok let’s see this problem statement.
“What new and magical customer experience can you create and launch to win in our markets”
... that’s not a fucking problem statement ... and why the fuck does that require filling out a docu-sign form to see?
I REALLY fucking hate legal / sales people. Wasting everyone’s time.4 -
Asking a question on Stackoverflow, explained as best as I can, provided links code everything.
5 minutes later I see a notification. Wooooo someone will help me fix my problem.
Some Indian dude suggested an edit.
You know what his edit was?

The problem with Linux... It's stable, you can get exactly the desktop experience you want out of it, BUUUUT, there's always an urge to tinker a little more, then you break everything and it takes hours to fix6

PM: We really need to solve this problem fast...
Me: So you want me to solve the element width or to reimplement the template?
PM: Yes! (and leaves before I can say anything)
Me: *poker face*4 -
ok, companies that use a robotic automated attendant on on they main phone where you are supposed to describe vocally your problem can actually fuck off and die.

The problem with working on a debugger for a living is that you can end up debugging a debugger debugging a debugger that is remotely debugging a debugger which is debugging a program...

Client calls: "hey man, my shit isnt working".
Me: "uh... Have you pressed ctrl+f5?" while coding on the speed of light so i can say it was his browser problem -
Stack Overflow is my rubber duck. I can't tell you the number of times I've figured my problem when I'm typing in my question. Something about trying to find the best way to word the problem helps jumpstart my brain and so I can figure out the solution.3

Studying Multimedia Arts, we are required to take a couple of courses in basic web development. (PHP). Since its known as new media grrr 🙄
Coming from a webdev background, I have no problem understanding PHP. However other designers in my course do.
A friend messaged me asking me how to fix a problem while in the dev environment. She tried explaining her problem without any of the terms we use in our general communication. You can read the conversation below.14 -
>Hello IT, how can I help you?
>Random problem...
>Have you tried turning it off and on again?
>Random excuse...
>Could you check if it is plugged in?
>Thank you!2 -
"That's a frontend problem."
Really? And you call yourself the engineering lead? Oh right, "frontend is not engineering", was that it? Ok, thanks a lot for the help, you can continue licking your balls now. I don't know why I still bother trying to ask you for advice.5 -
I can get absolutely dead pissed by the fact that a FUCKING 1800 euro laptop can't do a fucking basic thing like connecting to a bloody WiFi ap?
so why, you wonder? oh no, the problem isn't the fucking hardware. IT'S THIS DEAD BEAT PIECE OF SHIT CALLED WINDOWS. mfw when it runs fine under Linux, BUT WE CANT HAVE NICE THINGS CAN WE ADOBE?!?8 -
Just noticed on "winehq" that the acronym for "Wine" is "Wine Is Not an Emulator". This is great and all, but all my mind can think about is the infinite recursion problem they've got there.11

Best part of being a Dev us that we are basically wizards.
Now stay with me on this. At our command is the ability to think a solution to a problem and only using our minds and some gestures we can create entire worlds (games) .
We can create software and devices that can literally allow people to walk again.
We can connect people who are not even on the same planet as us (Sace Station) and have full conversations with them.
I don't know, there are limits to what we can do but give us some time and we can keep pushing them further and further.7 -
Of course you can call me at 9 o'clock on a saturday morning to fix your f****** login problem!
My private life is just a rumor!1 -

I've never had a problem with helping junior devs but when their keyboard and mouse looks like they bought it used from a primary school - glossy and covered in food etc... All I can think is burn it..... Burn it with fire.
Seriously... Keep your peripherals clean... They get nasty pretty quickly.1 -
Programmers then:
No problem NASA mate, we can use these microcontrollers to bring men to the moon no problem!
Programmers now:
Help Stack Overflow, my program is kill.. isn't 90GB (looking at you Evolution) and 400GB of virtual memory (looking at you Gitea) for my app completely normal? I thought that unused memory was wasted memory!1!
(400GB in physical memory is something you only find in the most high-end servers btw)9 -

How I feel when my family says "Sure you can fix the TV! if you can make a video game, this shouldn't be a problem."1

Sales: "It is urgent that we fix the problem ASAP!"
Dev: "what problem"
Sales: "The problem! I talked to the VP RnD, So he can make sure you are on it!"
Dev: "What exactly do you me to fix"
Sales: "The Problem!"8 -
Think about it:
It wouldn't be a real "bug" if it needed a 200 line fix. These little insects are so tiny they can easily hide even behind a misplaced apostrophe.

Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6 -
[technical problem]
"Please give more details, like OS, hardware, …"
"you see i'm working on pc."
Oh, alright, so I have to start at the very beginning... *starts explaining that more than one OS exists and that you can do different things with your computer*3 -
Why does FireFox has the shittiest dev tools?

I'm gonna decline the next time someone asks me "hop in chat with them" to discuss their stackoverflow problem.
I'd already given my two cents about the problem in question and I thought something was unclear about that so I say okay what the hell, made a chat room and invited him in.
Him: So I have this OTHER problem with [insert JS plugin]
Me: ... I don't know enough about it. I've used that specific plugin maybe once. The question I offered you my help with was PHP.
Him: Yeah but can you take a look really quick?
Me: I'd have to reread the documentation. I literally don't remember how to use it.
Him: No problem, here's the documentation. I want to do X, Y and Z.
Me: I don't think you can X without doing A and B first.
Him: I was told not to do A, so how can I do X, Y and Z?
Fucking hell I'm not gonna do your job for you. You know english. There is documentation available. Just read it and at least try things.2 -
The application has a system for sending reports and errors.

Today in IT class our teacher said: 'you can only use char and int in a switch statement'
I was confused because I was 100% sure that you could also use string and so when I got out of school I immediately looked it up.
It is true, well it was true until 2011 when Java 7 was released which added the possibility to also use the string data type in switch statements.
In this I see a huge problem with the education system. Teachers (almost) never 'update' their knowledge and then teach outdated stuff to their pupils. While this may not be a problem in some subjects, it definitely is a huge problem in IT.
The development world is always evolving but if the teachers don't follow along the pupils get taught outdated stuff which, in my opinion, is a really big problem when they finish school and go out in the world to find jobs.9 -
* KISS (keep it super simple)
* don’t try solve a problem you don’t already have
* admit if you messed up. We can solve a problem early and minimise the damage. People should never be scared to admit when they mess up. No one is perfect.
* voice your opinion. You’d be surprised how helpful this can be to your team, as we need to look at things from all angles.
* help your team. If you see something wrong, make the team aware of it.
* ask if unsure, don’t assume8 -
I DID IT!!! just fucking installed lineage os <3 never imagined that it could be so complicated... they really don't want you to flash your phone man. I guess the main problem was that my phone is old x)
So I'm trying to get a clean and free environment, any advice about applications? My biggest problem is with telegram, I'll try wire, bit there is anything else that can replace telegram and on android and Linux? I mean I need to keep conversations sync, and I won't use a Chrome application TT so no signal.41 -
Go to fucking hell SO!
Question: "How to do X?"
Answer: "You can solve your particular problem without doing X."
God fucking damnit, yeah some noob tried to use X to solve a completely unrelated problem and thank god somebody pointed out a better solution. But since all other questions about doing X are labelled as duplicates of this question, could you dickheads at least provide an actual answer to the question instead of an answer which only works for that particular problem and has nothing to do with X?3 -
The worst kind of problem you can have while coding is an inconsistent or intermittent bug... For code you didn't originally write...1

sometimes our application users can't login to our application and they report the problem to us. The fucking problem? Almost sure they forgot the password because we can login with their account.. Yeah we should not have access to their password, but we do xD. The worst is they send a Word file with only a print screen of the application error saying they can't login. Why not a .jpg??! The word takes 4 seconds to open13

I accidentally chat this on our general channel on Slack.

I remember the days when your only problem is creating an asterisk pyramid with for loops. Unlike now when you are thinking how idiotic a user can get.

Dammit! My daughter seem to have a resolution problem with her drawings. Anyone know if there's a device driver that can be upgraded or something?6

Some have good teachers and do some good work.
The main problem for me is their false promises. There is no scarcity of junior developers. None.
Anyone can be a programmer doesn't mean that everyone can be a good one.
The first 2-3 years will be very complicated.2 -

Me: This is a good article about a CSS problem I always have and can never remember how to fix. Imma bookmark that.
Me, the next time I have that problem: Dang. Why doesn't this work. Better Google it.3 -
Submitting a pull request seems a good way to end the week. That's what I love about (some) projects on GitHub; instead of just ranting about bugs or out-of-sync documentation, you can fix the problem and send a pull request upstream. :-)2

What really gets on my nerves?
People that think I can fix every computer problem there is, just because I'm a developer and therefore must know everything about PCs.

So it was not a problem, to begin with. Aaaaarrh........ I'm so mad at myself.3 -

I started doing it after I faced some problems due to the extremely bright lights. It's such a complicated problem that no one in the management or admin team can do anything about it. 🙄12 -
What does GPT-3 tell us about how our brains work?
I just read an interesting article (link below) about how it does on the turing test. I've had this inclination for a while that state of the art AI is "incomplete", in the sense that we have some of the systems to make AGI, but not all of them. One of the comments they make is that "GPT-3 often finds it easier to write code to solve a programming problem, than to solve the problem on one example input", and that's the nail on the head. We can codify situations, describe the rules, put them in memory and run those rules in our head. We can manipulate the input to see how it'll change, we can spot from a problem statement what the rules are instead of focusing on what the answer is. Anyway, light bulb moment shared.

i understand and accept why some people prefer mac.
every mac i have ever used has shit the bed during normal use. while windows and Linux machines have too, however less frequently. unlike mac there is always something i can personally do about it to fix the problem.
i like having complete control over my computer and don't like the idea of paying a premium to be told how i can or can't use it.6 -

Me VS Dentist:
Me: Hey Doc, it hearts on the left side of my jaw, can you take a look at it maybe?
Dentist: Awh that’s nothing. If you just keep it clean there is no problem. Let’s make a picture just to be sure.
Also Dentist: i can’t see it with my bare eyes but the picture indicates an upcoming problem on the right side. I HAVE TO REPAIR THIS!
No fucking complaints there but still.

I had contact with the BenQ support recently.

That was the answer:
"Thank you very much for your inquiry.
Insects entering the monitor through vents are a common problem that is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty as it is not a manufacturing problem.
This problem is known to all monitor manufacturers.
The cause of the problem is usually that the monitor is used in a dark environment without a secondary light source being activated.
If the insect is still alive, you can lure it out with a light source (the monitor should be turned off and cooled down).
If the insect is dead in the monitor panel, wait until it is completely dry. Then you can carefully press on the screen, next to the insects (avoid crushing them) and it should fall into the panel and leave the visible area.
Nevertheless, please send us a picture where we see the problem you are telling us, I inform you that the picture must be less than 2 MB in size."5 -

Not the question itself, the attitude was the problem.
I didn't solve the problem that they gave me, and struggled for a while (I ended up solving it an hour after the interview).
Their attitude was that they were both sitting on their computers working and not paying attention to me.
That was disrespectful and stupid. Interviews are also about figuring out whether you can work with the person being interviewed, not just their tech chops. They completely missed the opportunity.
I went to round 2 which was the same. Didn't go for round 3. -

Background: Process issue in the plant that the workers said was a software problem. I’m a Software Dev Manager
Exec: This is broken and it is a software problem. We just noticed it this week.
Me: Couldn’t have been us, relevant code was changed this time last year. Sounds like a process issue.
Exec: Can you give me an exact date it was changed last year?
Me: (Seriously, WTF?... checks git...) It was changed on December 2nd, 2016. Couldn’t have been us.
Exec: Can you detail that change for us?
Me: (GTFO) No, not my problem, stop trying to make it my problem.1 -

My problem with “The DevOps Handbook” is the same problem I have with Star Trek: The Next Generation: it gave me seriously unrealistic expectations that senior leaders can be convinced to abandon stupid ideas.
Or maybe it’s just that in my mid-to-late thirties my tolerance for manglement is as low as it’s ever been, and I’ve grown out of that idealistic kiss-ass stage of my career.

Hating small talk is what most tech guys would do. What's the point in indulging in it when you can not talk?
But there are times when you're cornered and can't do much about it. I figured out a way in which i can use this, still.
So whenever pushed into small talk i tend to tilt the conversation in the direction of the current problem I'm working on. I would then use the other guy as a sounding board to talk out the problem aloud. Helps me in clarifying my own thought. Also if i haven't already bored the other guy to death and the guy seems genuinely interested, i get a few pointers too.1 -
Is there any exact way to get the product of all primes under n multiplied together, without explicitly knowing what those primes are?
Lets call this number V.
Because hypothethetically, if we calculate from the *base* of V, then we can derive easy divisibility rules for V-1 and V+1, as laid out
here:
https://notaboutapples.wordpress.com/...
And then, unless I've misunderstood something, the problem of factorization has been changed from division into an addition and subtraction problem.12 -

Amazon rejected me twice, idiotic people think only dsa people can succeed. I ain't bad at DSA, it's just that I was being interviewed by an idiot who had crammed the problem from LC prior to interviewing. I could also pick a problem from LC which is unsolvable. I may not be good, but I accept that. These idiots think coding from other's soln makes them brilliant.11

Meta, Microsoft, Google, and countless startups have been investing and growing, making devs crazy with incredible salaries, incomprehensible hiring processes, and toxic corporate culture. They tried to make masses of end users beta-test their MVP products and services, turning them into subscribers and regular customers. Then they laid off many engineers and now try to run their businesses using immature artificial intelligence instead.

For solving a problem I document everything. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep, I want to have written out the problem in full and everything I have tried to get to a solution. When I really hit a wall the goal for me is keeping myself DRY and knowing what I've tried and haven't tried.1

Anyone know of a way of viewing DNS records that show CNAME entries. Usually they get followed and omitted, which can be a problem when changing Nameservers and you don’t have domain control on the original server.3

How to grow in a start up as a developer?
For sure, the scale is low. Product is easy to understand. How to grow so that I can proudly say that I solved this business problem or at least sound like I solved something good?2 -
Can anyone help me understand how can I identify Dynamic Programming problem and general framework to solve the problem using DP?

I'm in love with F#, the tooling can be a little buggy if you're used to TypeScript or Java but before learning it I've never been able to solve a real life problem with less than 10 lines of code7

I was talking to some post doc researchers today about a complex logic problem and a fresher interrupted and said, I think you can do that with objects... (The logic problem didn't depend on how the solution is modelled)
-
Posting here so everyone can tell me if they have the same problem. I can't scroll through older notifications, so I get stuck with notifications in the end since I can't read them (outside the limit fetched). I think @dfox should implement infinite scrolling like on the Rants screen.
Do any of you suffer from the same problem? -
Have anyone used machine learning in real world use cases? (would be nice if you can describe the case in a few words)
I'm reading about the topic and do some testing stuff but at the moment my feeling is that ml is like blockchain. It solves a specific type of problem and for some reason everyone wants to have this problem.7 -
I saw a rant/post yesterday about a helpful website for designpatterns, anti patterns etc. The problem is, I can't find the link now. FML.

Anyone else here get errors when using the latest SDK tools? It's like a manifest error but if I change the compile Target and min SDK to 25 it works. Is something wrong with SDK 26? I see that app compat is using v25.3.1, can this be the problem?3

"I go to work every morning with the possibility that I might learn something I don’t already know… You should look at every problem and think, ‘what can I learn by doing this?’ And if you think you can learn nothing, forget about doing it." - Milton Glaser1

Took me way too long to realise what the (annoyingly simple) solution to the problem I was having was.
This is the problem with derailed projects that just feels never ending, you get stupid after a while.
God I hope I can finish this shit up this weekend. I'm so done with this project. -
Managed to apply Particle.js to my personal website today. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can make some pretty interesting effects. Recommend it to everybody.
Only problem is that Chrome doesn't seem to like this library very much. It doesn't start on Chrome unless your website is on a server (you can always use Live Server or something like that from your code editor). Or you can always try a different browser. It seems to be only a Chrome problem.
Can't wait to get my site live and hear what you guys think. Though, don't expect too much please.8 -
Ok guys ... real talk ... I've been stuck on a problem for over a month! The thing is that the problem and implementation is too specific for stack overflow. I've tried everything that I can think of and it's actually keeping me up at night! What do you guys do when you hit a brick wall?8

When you start doing cp / noob at it:
Thoughts in my mind
- spending hrs to solve the problem
- should I see the solution. No no how can I build the logic then?
- think try
- told my friend,
He: oh tell me the problem
(After seeing the problem stmt)
5-10 mins scribbling with code
He: There you go it's that simple
Me: really! This is easy. But why I was not able to solve then :|8 -
Maybe one of you can help me, since I can't find something online.
I want to do a transfer.sh-like app in Go. So you can upload a file with curl, it gets stored there for some time and you can download it later.
The problem is, I only found tutorials for uploading files over html-forms, not over curl.
Does any of you know, how to write a handle-function, that accepts something Like
"Curl --upload-file SUPERIMPORTANT localhost:9999/upload"1 -
No matter how large and insurmountable the problem might first seem, it can always be hidden into smaller and smaller parts, until a solution can be found.

Why are there so many template languages? Do people enjoy them? I certainly don't.
What is the problem with just using functions? E.g. using https://j2html.com/ or http://www.lihaoyi.com/scalatags/
You can do code reuse with functions, for-loops, classes, interfaces etc.
Why are they avoided in Spring, PlayFramework and similar? -
HOW CAN I LINK THE STYLESHEET FILE IN MY HTML????????? I have struggle with this problem for so many times, yet none of the time I succeed and have to start over. This one single question has had made me got headache so many times in the past, yet I never can solve it.17

People are like programming environments, in basics all people are the same like all programming environments are the same, every programming language have a loop and conditions, numbers, strings and dates. The problem starts with syntax to write code or can you call it communicate with person. There are syntax errors, someone use functions and classes and that’s ok but someone is writing everything in one file and then it’s hard to communicate or change something. But the real problem are libraries or you can call it believes. Everyone is believing something but when you start using it and want some advanced functions there’s always something missing. When you want to contribute to fix that stuff you often can’t cause it’s closed source or maintainers are pricks. You end up writing wrappers and decorators, ignore malfunctions to somehow live with that problem. That’s called social skills.
We’re just programming environments. That’s all.1 -

Is leadership's willingness to accept shoddy code and a shoddy deployment process, as long as you can develop shoddy features early, a common theme among startups?
I really get a "not my problem when I sell this business" vibe from this attitude.5 -
