So today this Mother F**ker get HR to back him up to accuse me of not communicating well in the team because I consistently asked him (the code owner) why he kept coding not following the coding guideline.
How is it not communicating? He literally ghosted me and blocked me every time I ask him questions. Which I somewhat don't understand what he is trying to do. HR lady told me that a senior software engineer should have the knowledge to understand everything and all the code.
But the code looks like this :42 -
Manager: Why did you clear the data from the database? The client is now specifically requesting it and we don’t have it anymore!
Dev: You told me to.
Manager: Well why did you listen? It’s obvious now that that data was very important and should have been kept!
Dev: Last time you told me to do something that wasn’t a good idea I tried to explain why and told me not to question you ever again and that doing so was “disrespectful” and then threatened to have me fired. So now I just go along with what you say and let you suffer the consequences of not listening.
Manager: Well don’t do that then! It’s obviously not working very well! It’s ok to disagree with me you just have to make sure that what you think is something I agree with!
Dev: …13 -
3 hours of interview end up asking me
“Are you Chinese”
“Why don’t you look and sound Chinese”
“We only hire Chinese speaking candidate”
After told them that I withdraw my application as they only hire “Chinese speaking candidate” , they started to yell “you not professional , you waste time , I will ban you for life, you quick quick go away.”
So I ended up telling people not to join that company.32 -
Boss: Our customer's data is not syncing with XYZ service anynmore!
Me: Ok let me check. Did the tokens not refresh? Hmm the tokens are refreshing fine but the API still says that we do not have permissions. The scopes are fine too. I'll use our test account... its... cancelled? Hey boss, why is our XYZ account cancelled?
Boss: Oh, "I haven’t paid since I didn’t think we needed it" (ad verbatim)

So today I receive 23 emails on DMCA takedown notice from last year project (which is a personal project). I asked Github why they think it is violating their policy, they told me they receive tonnes of complaints from a company, they shared the chat and that's the ex-company that fired me.
Even the project is not related to them, they seem to want to "Cancel" me on Github. Bro this is Github, not Twitter! Cancel culture does not work here.
Some of my IoT projects they flag it In Github, which I believe my ex-company they don't do any IOT projects. How the fuck it is violating their so called "code nondisclosure"?33 -
I got assigned approximately 20 tasks, all are high priority.
Coworker got assigned 2 tasks, (“like fix button sizes and padding”, “localisation “)
He completed.
I got questioned: “are you sure you are a senior developer? Are you doing your work at all? If your coworker can finish low priority tasks in a day , why you as a senior can’t? “
Me :”if you have the ability to see , please tell me how many tasks I have that are in high priority.”
“Exactly, I need you to complete it now , I expect more from you as a senior. “
Me: “why not you tell me which tasks are higher priority? Because can’t be all are urgent. If everything is urgent , nothing is urgent.”
“Stop giving excuses, be a team player.”
Me :” how is it making excuses for asking urgencies of the tasks?”
“Hahaha you called yourself a senior. What a joke”
Me:”likewise, you called yourself a Project manager yet can’t manage. What a joke indeed.”20 -
I applied to Amazon recently not really thinking about it I was just bored. Dropped my CV and I was asked to fill in why would I want to work in that position. I un-ironically put “It sounds like a lot of fun”, got rejected instantly then got an unrelated message from an Amazon recruiter from another division inviting me to apply, rejected it because it didn’t sound as fun.
I’m an honest bloke I just want to have fun.12 -
So yesterday one of the "senior" python developers woke me up at 1 am (we work in different time zones, and he knows how many hours I'm ahead) asking why isn't his code working. The error message was:
[ERROR] Runtime.ImportModuleError: Unable to import module 'app': xxx is not installed, run `pip install xxx` Traceback (most recent call last)
I am at lose of words and patience. Not only idiots who can't google simple stuff are seniors, additionaly we went from "DevOps is a culture" straight to "hey I'm developer in my silo, if it doesn't work on my machine it's DevOps problem, plz fix".14 -
*PM on drugs*
PM: The destination list on our Infinity Rider app is not updating even after the user changes their pickup location.
Me: ???
PM: Infinity App not updating after pick up point change.
Me: Not really sure what you mean... Can I get a screen record?
PM: {{sends screen record}}
PM: You see it's showing results of old search. Not good!!!
Me: {{Watch media half way through and saw the obvious}}
Me: Results on available destination are relative to the user's current location and not the pickup address.
PM: Why would that be? Not good enough!
Me: You actually requested that implementation after I had previously made the destination recommendation list relative to selected pickup address.
PM: Please revert immediately!!!
Me: Hmmm... You told me the reason why that implementation was needed was to prevent users from selecting interstate addresses because they could.
PM: Ooh true. You can leave as is.
PM: {{proceeds to delete all older messages but last}}
Me: (⊙_⊙)
{{ 4 hours later }}
PM: I think we need to look into this implementation a second time.5 -
My friend got laid off today. He was told to not come to office from tomorrow. No explanation given even after a good performance review.
Why companies are so bad at treating employees like people.6 -
1. Applied to a tech company based in Seattle
2. Interviewed
3. Got rejected because "At the moment, they do not hire international students."
Then, why did you interview me in the first place? :')4 -
No no no.
This newbie pings me for every thing !
It's fucking annoying !
And I'm annoyed with myself for still being nice !
I don't know if he's ever heard of searching for a solution online for even the most trivial problems !
He's not even aware of restarting something !
I have to tell him to do that !
He doesn't even read the help information for commands !
Why why why.24 -
"Did you not see (x important announcement) guys?! It was posted very clearly in the group teams channel and everyone was tagged!"
"No, we turned off notifications for that teams channel so didn't see it."
"What?! Why on earth would you turn notifications off, everything posted there is incredibly important! You must turn them back on now!"
Channel history:
- @everyone "HEY GUYS IT'S FRIDAY! Let's celebrate by everyone posting their favourite gif! Go go go!"
- @everyone "Choo choo guys it's the training train! How about we all share our best training experience for a bit of positivity?"
- @everyone "Hi I lost my laptop can anyone help find it"
Yeah... I wonder why...4 -
Action takes place during demo to the stakeholders.
Manager : During the demo we will show a working prototype of new functionality. In this sprint we focused on that feature not on UX. Please do not pay attention to UI and focus on business values
*Dev starts sharing screen*
*1 sec after*
Executive : This is unacceptable. It looks gross, why you don't use default controls.
Manager : We did, this is how they look like, but please do not pay attention to UI, it is not finished
*Dev continue presenting*
*1 sec after*
Executive : I see missing comma in that sentence. It is unacceptable to show features in that state, lets move on to another team.
It was really large feature working as a charm, but they focused entirely on unpolished UI :/4 -
Recruiter: "Take this culture survey. It's not a test. There are no right or wrong answers."
Me, internal voice: Then why give me a list of words to choose from that I think describe me best and another list of words to choose from that describe how I ought to behave at work? Clearly, there's a matchup you're trying to do here. So clearly there's going to be a wrong answer if I don't choose enough of the former to match the latter.4 -
I often hear
You will be promoted as lead if you act like it or take charge
That is really stupid, there is difference between responsibly and effort.
Why would i put effort for things that i am not getting paid for ?
Fuck that6 -
God damn fucking Windows bullshit.
Why is the fuck does Microsoft HATE its users?
Latest updates, and no fuck Windows 11, completely BREAKS all of my WSL environments.
Home directories are gone, or the environments are corrupt and won't even run.
99% of the issues these dense shit-fucks cause are because they RaNdOmLy reboot for their dumbass updates instead of scheduling them with the end user. During these rebots, do you thing they wait for everything to shut down?
HELL NO!
They just shut that shit down like they fucking own it. Editors? Gone. Browsers? Gone. WSL Consoles? Gone. Docker containers? Gone. IEdge? Hey, we have great news, we made IE your default browser again! BTW, your upgrade to Windows 11 is free until we force you to upgrade!
I'm so fed up with it.....so fucking tired of it...
The only reason why I even use WSL these days is to ssh into my Linux devices or run some quick dev tests in containers. Why not use PuTTY for SSH? Because it fucking SUCKS that's why.
I'm feeling so many emotions right now over bullshit that shouldn't even be happening. I'm literally at the point that I'm just going to install Linux on this device and just create a Windows VM on one of my hosts so I can still do "work" things that involve leadership.19 -
Y'all need to chill!
**DO NOT** downvote a newbie's post without telling them why. It may sound like a spam to you, but it's someone's best effort at an icebreaker joke. 😠63 -
I have a deadline in 3 hours and my iMac mouse battery is EMPTY AND BECAUSE OF APPLES FUCKING RETARDED DESIGN I HAVE TO FLIP IT BACKWARDS SO IT CAN RECHARGE AND I HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE BATTERY IS ALIVE WHAT THE FUCK WHO DOES THIS WHO THE FUCK BUILT SUCH A RETARDED DESIGN, WHY NOT HAVE THE USBC HOLE ON THE SIDES??????30

Story of a penguin fledgling, one of my end users whom I migrated from Win 7 to Linux Mint. She had been on Windows since Win 98 and still uses Windows at work.
Three months before. Me, Linux might not be as good, but Win 10 is even worse. User, mh.
Migration. User, looks different, but not bad.
One month later. User, it's nice, I like it.
Three months later. User, why does Windows reboot doing lengthy stuff?
Six months later. User, I hate Windows. Why is everyone using this crap?
One year later. Malware issues at work. User to IT staff, that wouldn't have happened with Linux. Me, that's the spirit!31 -
Warning: American perspective of some shit that happens in America that I do not know if it is the same in other places of the world.
I got a notification from my child's school saying that she has been selected for doing <bs activity> between the hours of 1-3 and that parent cooperation is expected. I called the institution and told them that she would not be participating. They asked me WHY, to which I answered that said schedule does not align with my daily schedule. They continue to press as to WHY she would not make it to which I added in a very harsh tone: "because I am fucking working and my wife is fucking working, what age do you think it is? the 1950s in which I can have some meaningless desk job and pay for a house that would be worth half a mil now a days when my wife stays at home all day and just goes with whatever whim y'all have?"
Needless to say, she is no longer in said activity group, but this seems to be very frequent inside of school systems in the U.S, they really ain't evolved much.
No, wait, they have, we have active shooter trainings now, that shit is semi-new.18 -
Why the absolute fuck do I need to have nvidia membership to download cudnn? What evil do these mofos think people achieve with free access to a fucking programming tool?
Jesus on a bike! I nag about open science and all I end up with is always these spying morons, who purposefully disable scientists. Fuck!

Me, talking to a colleague:
"No, thats impossible. The problem can not be in my code. Let me show you why. You see, the code does this, and than it goes here, and then… oohhhh…. I’ve found the bug."4 -
I'm in internship, why the fuck am I the one explaining them how to use git, Android studio????? Why am I the project manager?????? I'm supposed to learn from you not the opposite. Fuck this monkey.15

Instagram just imported my birthday from my Facebook, which btw, was not specifically linked when I used to post on Facebook.
Mark Fucking Fuckface Fuckerberg's team is destroying Instagram now. Ffs. 😒😒
Why is everyone okay with this invasion of privacy? And when is telegram launching an image sharing platform?31 -
Why do managers always want to fucking "discuss"? If you had literally a first-grader's education in basic electronics, you could define tasks and tickets by yourself and not have to fumble around all day and fuck it up,13
-
Some company invited me for coding challenge. Tbh, I can't be arsed. Why can't they look into my fucking git? There is way more info there about how I actually work, so why the fuck not look at what I have done than their fucking exam project?
Urghhhhhhh24 -
Performance Review: You’ve slowed down.
My head: I never get to code cause all we do is meetings. Like no shit I have slowed down. Why the fuck do we have 3 days just full of meetings that I don’t even contribute to ?! I’m not gonna do overtime for this shit
Me (actually): Ah, shucks! Guess we can work on that huh?32 -
Not biting off the head of my incompetent manager.
Genuinely took a lot of effort. Partially the reason why I have depression. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -
Girlfriend: How much water did you drink today?
Me: About 3 litres.
Girlfriend: How much of that is coffee?
Me: 5 cups.
Girlfriend: How can you count coffee in that?
Me: Why not?
Girlfriend: It's diuretic.
Me: Yes, but it's still water that goes through my body.
Girlfriend: You're such a smart-ass, huh?
Me: Well, yes, I am.
Girlfriend: So why are you so tired if you think you're drinking enough water? Well?
Me: Never ask a question you don't want to know the answer to.
Girlfriend slammed the door.
So no, women don't want honest men. Guys, lie, lie, lie.
And now I can look at the error message.14 -
start teaching people how and why to delete code instead of teaching them only how to write code
compare functional and object oriented languages as well as high level and low level languages and explain what are advantages of using certain language without going into the syntax
let people do mistakes and don’t punish people for making them but let them explain what happened, if they know what was the cause of mistake it is worth ten times than doing things correctly
mix teams per period of time instead of per project
make showcases how to modify ugly code to pretty one and what are the steps and what patterns people should look after
teach by not showing old stuff but showing where old stuff exists in modern things and why it’s important there and what’s the purpose of doing things certain way instead of flat theory based on ancient examples1 -
Some undocumented, never touched, 15 years old recursive function at the core of our business model suddenly stops working in a niche scenario, debugger is not available and I have to find out why.16
-
I have not remotely had the energy to post here. Nor reply. And it is a shame because most of you I consider friends. And if not friends, at least excellent aquitances.
People make comments, I dont reply. People make threads, and I dont respond. People make ++s, and I'm a ghost.
I enjoyed shitposting, and asking questions, and hopefully entertaining some of you. I really do.
I'm just in a funk where nothing seems to matter right now and I dont know why, pr how to get out of it.
I have threads, and responses from scor, nanos, nachoscode, and a dozen others I usually enjoy interacting with and it's like all the life has just been sucked right out of me.
I feel isolated and alienated from everything and everyone and I dont know why or when it started. Its just..there. nor how to talk about it.
I think I'm becoming a misanthrope or something. The more I go on with this sensation, the less I want to be around people, and I dont understand why.15 -
These bloody form designers.
I was filling in this form earlier and there were some fields which were not marked mandatory so I didn’t fill them in (because why should I ?)
And then later, I received a dozen automated e-mails one for each non-mandatory field I did not fill asking me to provide them that information.3 -
Is it done yet?
Stop micromanaging! We are providing updates every morning, what difference does it make to ask for the update in the evening?!? Don't think no one can see that all you are asking is "is it done yet?"
Like a small child who does not understand the concepts of travel yet, you won't understand why "such a small change" takes so long. It's because we are scooping all the crap, patched by assholes who cared only to please you and did not had the courage to say no to your pressure and do things smart way.
If you think it is necessary to keep reminding everyone to do their job - then you you do not belong in IT.3 -
I contributed to my first open source project on GitHub. It is so much better and fun to do. Why have I not been doing this since 🤔😊😁
-
CTO: Research, problem analysis, customer need validations, and data based prioritisation is stupid.
Me: So, then why should we solve this problem?
CTO: Because my team invests a lot of time in here (read "because we build a shitty system in past without thinking and we are doing it again").
Me: I don't see this as a good idea.
CTO: I become emotional when I request product to align and they don't. We must solve this problem and not what customers want.
Me: I am not participating here.
CTO: And I want you to work on weekends to support my team.
Me: *disconnects*3 -
Wasting about an hour trying to leave detailed comments and suggestions for a fellow student on an university project's code.
Said person just respond on the team group with "If anyone does not like something, he/she can go ahead to change it, so we would move on faster"
THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE WE STILL DOING CODE REVIEWS???6 -
!dev (or maybe dev? Idk)
I'm a strong starter but not a strong finisher. I have rarely ever enjoyed putting "final touches" on anything. This is why I would appreciate working with someone who's a strong finisher and is not a credit-thief. But in this day and age for some absurd reason one must be both a strong starter and a strong finisher. One should be a complete person. 🙄8 -
Hey, it's 2023.
If your component isn't written in TypeScript, I'm not using it :)
"TypeScript is overly complicated!!!" why, because it pointed out everything wrong in your JS code?
"TypeScript is not flexible!!!" why, because it makes you not rely on fragile "only possible in javascript" patterns?
"TypeScript isn't needed!!!" why, because you've never worked on a project with more than 100 lines of code where dependency management and clean code policies were implemented?
god just stop with the JavaScript purist BS, you aren't going to win this battle, and it's even worse because not only are you injuring everyone in the software community, you're injuring your own productivity and skillset
actually, you know what, fine. just use pure JS and HTML implementations. see you in 10 years when i'm retired and you are still running around in circles wondering why the world has left you behind28 -
Tesla lost $879M in 2020. Tesla is not profitable.
In USA, gas cars automakers are legally required to give money to EV makers, like Tesla, that has 100% EV fleet. Tesla reported making $727M in 2020. But, other automakers gave it $1.6B. Tesla lost money. They lost $879M.
Tesla manages to lose money even without competition and with all that dotations. Imagine what happens when the competition in EV arises from other automakers? Then, dotations will stop. Tesla had no competition and had dotations. They're not gonna get any dotations anymore, and they will have rising competition.
They're gonna die.
In 2020, in Europe, VW sold more ELECTRIC cars than Tesla. And then you ask why I don't buy Tesla stocks. That's why.65 -
Hell World
So to followup with the enterprise grade goodness, I made a little prototype~
https://github.com/EnterpriseSoftwa...
Not very enterprise like yet, but a fun first 'extension' to writing a proper hello world program.
Ideas
--------
*Things that might make it more business like*
- Lots and lots of abstraction
- Tests ( not very business like but more stuff = better )
- FFI | Shared library, because why not
- Threading / workers
Hardcore:
Design a dedicated language for writing hello world programs that is compiled / interpreted on a simulated custom hello-world-cpu and displays it's content on a simulated screen.
Note
--------
I want to keep the documentation & code normal / actually helpful as a contrast to the concept itself and of course to keep my sanity.24 -
If you're angry at someone not figuring out your code because it was “obvious”, remember:
even before 9/11 happened, emergency lines found out they should say “nine-one-one” instead of “nine-eleven”. Why? Because panicking people were looking for “eleven” button on the keypad. They learned it the hard way.
No one is rational 100% of the time.9 -
I see now why people can despise WordPress.
2nd week of just pure learning and I gotta say that I can see that the way it was built was paved with good intentions, but it's clear people wanted more from it and things have only gotten more and more messy.
Honestly, it's fine. It's not my favorite stack, but whatevs.16 -
I'm having an existential crisis with this client.
We are spending millions of $s every year to make sure the product's performance is perfect. We are testing various scenarios, fine-tuning PLABs: the environment, application, middleware, infra,... And then we provide our recommendations to the client: "To handle load of XX parallel users focusing on YY, yy and Zy APIs, use <THIS> configuration".
And what the client does?
- take our recommendations and measure the wind speed outside
- if speed is <20m/s and milk hasn't gone bad yet, add 2x more instances of API X
- otherwise add 3xX, 1xY and give more CPUs to Z
- split the setup in half and deploy in 2 completely separate load-balanced prod environments.
- <do other "tweaking">
- bomb our team with questions "why do we have slow RTs?", "why did the env crash?", "why do we have all those errors?", "why has this been overlooked in PLABs?!?"
If you're improvising despite our recommendations, wtf are we doing here???
One day I will crack. Hopefully, not sometime soon.3 -
[wordpress trigger warning]
Had an idiotic colleague who re-implemented the insert image function as a shortcode. A “senior php developer”. No, I’m not kidding.
Him: “But this way we can set a class”
Me: “As you can with the standard mode”
Him “No you can’t”
Me: *shows*
Him (smiling): “well why don’t you remove my stuff then?”7 -
Hired a friend who is kindoff a spoiled brat. If me or the rest of the team tell him anything he answers with the team does not know enough to tell him what to do. The slightest words (why is it not done yer etc. seem to trigger his ego and threaten to resign). His skills are also not what i thought they were , they get the job done but thats pretty much it. Should i work to placate his ego or let him resign.10

SAP is not a business system. Its goal is not to solve any kind of business problem. SAP is a club. Just like Supreme clothes, it's expensive for the sake of being expensive. Everyone else also knows they're expensive, and this is why you buy them. If you adopt SAP, you do it just to show potential investors that you have money. SAP is designer clothes of IT.
I kinda thought about it, and it was confirmed by a person who worked with SAP for the last 20 years.45 -
Websites with a very bright background and very dark text make me psychopathic. Specially when I'm tired and moody.
Why can't everything have a dark theme and a not-super bright text?8 -
Not the worst, but probably the only one I can sort of explain & not get into trouble for NDA breach..
Umm.. here it goes.. wrong id returned from db procedure, tried to do something on db with that id and got exception that the id doesn't exist. Instead of checking why the procedure returns nonexistent id, he just wrapped everything in try catch without any logs.. & of course, didn't tell anyone about this.. o.0
I know, I know, code review could have prevented this, but holy fuck..
Guy's cv had more experience than I have now, so at the time, I didn't think I'd have to check every line of code he wrote, especially not for shit like this.3 -

Working from third world country means getting paid just 10-20% of world wide salaries and already being happy about it, because your salary is still 4 times higher than other local ones.
Silly wishes for career. To achieve getting paid 90%+ of the salary in the next close years. Or at least 50%.
Some of the local people continue work for 10% salary all their career life here... I wonder why? Why not to fight for your place in the world?10 -
Was looking through some repositories and found this in a 2y old PR, the only PR there is and ever was in the repo..
Ends with:
> Best wishes for the Wednesday launch.
> Steve
Steve never got an answer (on the PR at least) .. but the README links to his fork now (and no other changes have been done) .. why not just accept the PR or at least close it..7 -
Why the fuck do people not change their router admin password!? I was at a hotel today and could access their router admin interface with the default credentials. I guess this isn't purely the fault of the hotel because not all people know a damn thing about security and only use the interface to change the SSID and password of the AP. But why allow them to leave the default password? Why isn't this a standard feature to be forced to change the password :|12

Security!
Offensive and defensive at both code and infrastructure levels.
So many times I see devs not give a flying pancake about security. Whether it be rolling integers for sql injection or permission guarding to prevent someone executing something they shouldn't.
Why is security in this industry always the last thing to be concerned about when it's the first thing that's going to kill your business.
😓7 -
Last night by accident I put my phone on coconut paste. (don't ask.)
Although it doesn't show signs of damage, and hopefully it hasn't been damaged, my heart is still not at rest. I had enough panic for one year.
But why does this keep happening to me with tech stuff accidents? Whyyyyyyy?24 -
Stakeholder: Users are connecting invalid memberships to their web accounts. They shouldn’t be able to do that.
Me: Their memberships were valid when they set up the account. Your team’s record de-duping project is the issue here. You decided to mark those memberships as invalid.
I’m real tired of this stakeholder acting like this is a website issue or user error. Plus, this chaos could have been avoided if they and other involved stakeholders had just cc’d me on this de-duping project. I would have said their approach was not a good idea. But they didn’t because they want to do what’s convenient for them. If they want to be a reliable source of truth for our data, then they need to be responsible with how they’re handling that data.devrant why are you so irresponsible with our data this is not user error i’m real tired of this stakeholder2 -

It's official, the "front end dev" doesn't know how to code.
Why.
And it's not a "Well I don't know JS because I use React." scenario, no. He has almost no idea of coding.
What was he thinking trying to build the front end of a very complex app with just HTML, CSS and stupid copied and pasted snippets?5 -
I'm forced by my job to use this fucking unusable piece of horse shit also know as a Windows operating system.
And it's not only that I have experienced every fucking corner case bug that is possible to occur in our universe.
Not only that that for last 2 years I seen more blue screen than blue sky.
Not only that forced updates fucked my schedules so many times that now I'm really *afraid* to turn off my computer off because I have zero guarantee that I will be able to restart it in a reasonable amount of time.
No, neither of those broke me.

NEW TALES FROM THE FUCKING CRYPT. It's disgusting...
... how managers keep to invest money into totally useless gadgets at the company to keep themselves motivated with stupid toys, tech and gear. WHY in fucks name would you not spend the money on hiring more devs and a dev consultant?
It's funny how they presented the stats first: "yea well we have ten big projects in dev right now" (we are FIVE FUCKING PEOPLE, tells you everything, right) "... BUT WE HAVE BOUGHT NEW SCOOTERS FOR THE COMPANY!".
Ok... why though? Who would actually use those things except the ones that bought them. Just another way of spending more money to reduce the promised employee return on the company's profit...2 -
Why even is Microsoft Teams?
Why does it suck so bad? Why is it a memory hog? Why does the ELECTRON desktop app not have native ARM64 support neither on Windows nor macOS? Why is it even an Electron app? Why the web version does not work with Safari (then again, barely anything more complex than my portfolio site works on Safari)? Why is the UI from 2016? Why is it preinstalled with Windows 11? Why the pre-installed Windows 11 version is a completely different entity? Why the preinstalled Windows 11 version does not work with school/work version of Teams calls?11 -
All these super expensive and fancy enterprise tools. CloudWatch, AppDynamics, Grafana, Splunk and whatnot. Spent a month trying to figure out why the fuck the app does not perform well.
Took 1 day with tcpdump, awk and gnu utils to figure out why.
Should anyone need a tcpdump analyzer -- try my awk script. Shows response times of each network call w/o impacting app performance :)

Me: I would like to receive external training for RHCSA course and certification
Company: Sure! we will open a ticket for you and keep you posted
Me: it's been almost 3 months, could you give me any updates?
Company: Oh actually you are not eligible! this certification is not aligned with your job description!
Me: But...I use linux every single day and it's one of the main requirements to be able to do my job?
Company: Yeah whatever no need to get certified still..!
Me: Why didn't you tell me that 3 months ago?
Company: Well the process was changed and we decided this certification does not match your profile
Me: What matches my profile then?
Company: certificates in Azure and GCP
Me: But I don't ever use those platforms?
Company: ......

I really invested into this work from home lifestyle, moving in an appartment where i could have my own office, upgrading my personal workstation, leaving overpriced locations close to subways behind.. so i do hope it will remain like this for at least a few more years (or why not, even forever for dev roles)
It's way better than a shitty office placed in location equally incomfortable for everyone
Otherwise.. well, there is always the option to go freelancing from home3 -
Why the fuck does every operations app do popouts now? I don't want a simple view of the data, I want all the data so I can compare it together.
It's not like you're saving any bandwidth! All the data is there, I can fucking see it 👀 in the dev tools!
I hate how every product now desperately tries to be like their competitor and everyone fails at it because everyone is copying everyone else.7 -

Repositories with 1k+ issues and / or 50+ pull requests are basically lost causes I would think..
1. Hard to recover properly
2. The same people that let it come to that point won't be the ones to be able to recover it in the first place
'lost cause' as in the project will just slowly because worse and worse in most ways, not that it's outright useless / non-functioning / ..
Does anyone have a counter-example of such a project that did recover?

- every gym rats are “quiet dieting.”

I hate web dev because I know enough to know how it "should" be done, know that it's not done that way, but also don't know enough to do it that way quickly.
Or why I spent the last 2 days scripting deployment of a website that costs 9$ a year to run, when I couldn't find a deployment script anywhere else.3 -

Why do Android apps not clear their own irrelevant notifications?
For example: If I mark all notifs as read within the devRant app, or archive an email in Gmail, or read a message in the Jira app, why does it not clear the status bar notification?
Is there a good reason, or is it just often overlooked by developers to perform a cleanup action like this?6 -
Why the fuck they keep insisting a backend developer to do frontend shit?
No fucking shit I'm slow on this crap. And i told them several times it's not my forte. And they keep inisting to keeping a high standard blah blah blah

I'll find another job. I don't care at this point.6 -

Spotify... why don't you have a volume slider specifically for your output on my phone..?
Why do I need to turn ALL non-call volume down to just turn the music down.
Sometimes I want to play games with music but I don't want the music to be totally loud.
Sometimes I wanna do WHATEVER at full volume with some music in the background.
But I just... can't

Visual Studio 2022 compiles our internal c++ cmake project as a mix of x86 and x86_64 binaries, then fails to link.
VS 2019 correctly compiles everything as x86_64.

I got invited to interview with a startup(series B) by a former manager. I told them I had RSUs vesting in six months and that unless they could give me a sign on for their amount I couldn’t leave. The recruiter says “Don’t worry, we can get creative with the sign on bonus”
I go through their whole interview process and get the offer.
Sign on is 15% of the amount of my vesting RSUs, and a base below what I make now.
Why waste my time not telling me the comp range from the start and why lead me on with a comment about a sign on? I told you up front what I made!1 -
I swear to god "old school" C++ devs are menace to humanity
Why yes let's make this one line long function, that could even be constexpr, and make it a macro.
Why the fuck not, let's make compiler errors worse by foregoing any type checking. Let's throw away namespacing as well, great.
Fuck you.
I shouldn't have to dig through 4 levels of nested macros just cause "muh performance" and "we've always done it like that".

"Why do you even need to access your apps' servers?" wut
There are just SO many amazing devs here who have NEVER had do any of those things, I'm quite literally an idiot and don't know what I'm doing, sorry for my ignorance. I'd forgotten that there is only exactly one way to build software, I wish I'd done it "that" way sooner! Foolish me.

dude fuck fucking salesforce i fucking hate the day someone came up with the brilliant ass idea of inventing this garbage crm software that i must deal with even though it is not my area. i fucking hate the developer experience to do third-party implementations, not letting you upload changes to another environment for the sake of """"good practices"""", the fucking interface is slow as shit i could've already had intense hto sex, taken a shit, cook lunch and sleep 2 hours before it can load a single retarded lightning page.

I am currently working as a consultant and I like it. Pseudo-flexible working hours suck. I get the "choice" to start work between 7:30-9:30 AM. I'm a night owl so waking up at 6AM is not an option. Why can't they just allow to start at 10AM and finish at 6:30PM? Between 7:30 & 9:30 is peak rush hour and I'm bound to lose 1h30 in traffic for 30km (normally it would take half an hour) and start my workday pissed off.6

a bet:
this birthday, i will get:
lemon glutenfree cake (if any) because mom can't have gluten and sister likes lemon cake. i hate both of those. but that's irrelevant as it always was.
if any, then gifts will be anything except cigarettes which is basically the only thing within price range they're willing to spend, that i would actually be happy about.
birthday is just an artificially glorified ordinary day. and i'm not the type to do hysterics to artificially glorify it. and it's fine. but then, why are they artificially glorifying it while unwilling to actually glorify it properly, as in, glorify it for me?
pick fucking one. artificially glorify it, in which case, FOR ME, or just don't give a fucking shit same as i don't.
but why are you artificially glorifying it for the purpose of ignoring me and glorifying everything exactly in spite of me, without even being aware that you're doing that?
like seriously, what? make your "i love not you, but my daughter" day, as an extra to her birthday. i don't give a shit, i'm happy you have a nice relationship. but doing all of the "i love my daugther day" shit on my birthday, AND PRETENDING IT WAS DONE FOR MY BIRTHDAY, FOR ME, and being sad about me being sad that all you did "for me" was in fact for yourself and for everyone else, that's the combo that gets me.
"oh why u making me so sad by being so sad that i ignored everything you like and kept telling me you like for the past X years and i just ignored it because it's not my nor your sister's preference?"
guess why, you fucktard. how about you ignore the day next time instead of making it an unconscious (that's the worst, that they don't even realize it) mockery of the day.
"oh why are you sadand shitty feeling that we made this bullshit ignorable "celebrate you" day about ignoring everything that celebrates you, and made it into the opposite instead? why are you so demanding and cruel?"
SHUT. THE. FUCK. UP.
go have a walk with your beloved daughter and please ignore me as you always do.
just leave me the fuck alone.5 -
Why, in 2023, do we still have a path length limit in Windows?
I know it's not that trivial finding a good soution, but at least if I managed to get a .zip which I can't extract in that directory because of a few files with a too long file name, let me know in advance (and not during the extraction) and maybe (amazing idea) let me know how many steps I have to go back in the directories tree to make it work…13 -
I just realized that college professors aren't teachers, they just did "really good" in their field of study.

If you ask any sane person "hey, do you want to get some disease with fever, headache and potential risk of dying?", I doubt anyone will say "yes".
But if there exist a way to prevent it with a proven efficacy from both evidence-based medicine and science, why not get it today? I'm not even talking about covid. Why people are not getting their flu shots? How's that logic works? You mean you don't want disease, but you also don't want to take any measures to prevent it?
Every time in late autumn people get cold. For a sane person, one such case with themselves is enough to say "hey, I don't want this to happen again the next autumn". Yet people do nothing.
I can't understand this.
And this is only a flu. Hepatitis will destroy your liver and potentially will destroy your whole life, so why avoid vaccination?10 -
I’ve never bothered to try Linux as past experiences with it is not as amazing as people say. What advantages does Linux have to Windows? Until today, I had assumed deploying stuff to prod would NOT be one of my responsabilities in this company. Apparently that's not the case.
Had to deploy my code and pray it didn't break anything. Why is this a big deal at all?
Well you see, there is no repository. At all. No git, no svn, not even duplicate folders. No tests, no pipeline. Just a bunch of CPanels.
Had to manually copy files and folders from the development site to the production site and partially copy a database. "Just drag and drop" were the instructions I was given.
As if using CakePHP2, PHP5 and having to parse fucking Excel files wasn't bad enough, now I have to deal with one of the worst ways to deploy code.
Fuck it, I'm switching on the looking-for-job flag on linkedin.5 -
I'm getting tired of coding. Not really the coding part, the dealing with people who tell me what to code and why part. Sort of considering making a move into a scrum master or PM role just so I can get fired when I say "No, we're not changing everything they've been working on in the middle of the sprint" or maybe "Yeah, no we're not going to put in a bunch of tickets to change the UI/UX without first talking to the designers, because that's what they do. Yes, I realize we aren't Facebook, but do you realize we "compete" with them because a huge number of people will compare our usability to theirs? (even if just subconsciously)"2

I feel like it might be a tiny bit (not much) better among React developers, but I ended up within one of those enterprise Angular till death companies, and it seems like nobody would ever doubt their Typescript skills, yet nobody actually understands Typescript at all.
In theory, I love Typescript. But you can abuse it to a point where it's almost as painful to work with as normal JavaScript.
It's not that I'm a master of Typescript.
But while I feel like I'm the only one understanding the mental model behind Typescript and also get stuff like mapped types or why you might wanna replace your enums with as const assertions, the rest calls themselves Typescript developers in their CV, no doubt. But It's way to easy to write whatever Typescript, while it's not as easy to reel get the hang of it.7 -

Is the CS field creating terms for the sake of creating terms?
Someone mentioned a "closure" in another post. I instinctively knew what they meant by that based upon the code I saw. I had heard the term thrown around before, but it had not yet connected in my mind. I wondered why I had not been exposed enough to care.
So I thought: What does C++ have as far as closures?
I found that C++ has lambdas. Those are definitions for function objects. They do not exist at runtime. But a closure does. The analog is you have classes. They are definitions and do not exist at runtime. But instances of classes do. So at runtime the instance is what you are working with. This is the same as lambdas vs closures in C++. The closure is the runtime counterpart. Why a separate term for what essentially is an instance? Is it because it captures data and code? As far as I know the closure is all data that gets passed around that calls a function. So it is essentially an instance of a lambda.
Another term: memoization. I have yet to see this added to any dictionary in online tools like a browser. Is the term so specific that nobody cares to add it? I mean these are tools programmers use all the time.
My guess is these terms originated a long time ago and I have just not been exposed to the contexts for these terms enough. It just seems like I feel like I have been in the field a long time. But a lot of terms seem alien to me. I also have never seen these terms used at work. Many of the devs I work with actively avoid CS specific terms to not confuse our electrical coworkers. My background started in electrical. So maybe I just didn't do enough CS in college.6 -
Friend: What do you know about Wordpress?
Me: Why???
Friend: My assistant made changes to my organization’s website and now it’s messed up. The page formatting is off.
Me: Wordpress has a version history for some things. Maybe go back to an earlier point in time?
Friend: I think she changed something that the vendor told us not to touch.
Me: Like a custom plugin that your website vendor made?
Friend: Maybe…
Me: Why is your assistant even touching things like that?
Friend: I really don’t want to contact the vendor because I don’t think they’re very good with website development. And I have no idea what this would cost.
Me: You might have to bite the bullet on the cost. And maybe fire that assistant for a butthole move like that. At least you have messaging to explain the wonky css is due to technical difficulties. RIP to your website.5 -
Why would you send me an email that "the opening is not longer available" when you're going to list the job again 3 more times in the same month??

Dear BOSE, how can you make a "smart" speaker so dumb and complicated? Why require to use an app that needs frequent updates and takes up so much storage space for ... what exactly?
Dear Spotify, why not add features to the web player if your app does not run on older devices? Which native feature would your app need that is missing on iOS 13?
Dear companies making money due to the fact that some real artists make real music that real people love to listen to, how come your apps and gadgets always make me nostalgic about actual records and make me tune in to an actual radio station at the end of the day? At least you keep showing us not to rely on digital technology and rather go visit actual live concerts to listen to live music in the real world more often!2 -

I would have never considered it but several people thought: why not train our diffusion models on mappings between latent spaces themselves instead of on say, raw data like pixels?
It's a palm-to-face moment because of how obvious it is in hindsight.

For the love of the God and compiler. Why do tech companies keep putting finance people in charge of operations?
Everything gets reduced to a value in a spreadsheet and ifsum<pretendprofits it’s a problem.
Company just closed $40m in funding and here I am quibbling about fixed costs with some MBA holding jackass to get $200 so I can equip my team with a licenses for a better IDE.
I’m this close to saying fuck it, buy independent licenses and then expense it back to the company. It’ll cost more than bundling but that’s why I’m not in finance.2 -
remote team bonding/social activities like playing pictionary or whatever
can we not? maybe its cute the first time, but we're all awkward and i just wanna go home
i dont even understand where this is coming from, if u actually want to make people happy u could just send them home earlier
otherwise why have this stuff instead of just making us wageslaves work like normal anyway
is this another thing like how the hiring budget is bigger than the retention budget or is there different MBA research for why the fuck this is a thing to begin with2 -

Large majority of rants is about incompetent project managers.
No matter where you live the problem stays the same. Most of them have no clue how software is being made and how dev/qa work looks like.
I frankly do not understand this phenomena. I have friends in automotive/constructions industry and theirs managers are engineers too in that field. Why it can't be the same in software development?5 -

Just because Elon Musk is acting like a horse let loose in a hospital over at Twitter does not suddenly give all employers the right to treat us like animals. I will not give you double the work performance for the same amount you agreed to pay me. I will give you the bare minimum and until you pay me more, you will not get more, and even then, what makes you think I will give you more? I rather work less hours a week rather than continue contributing to keeping the corporate machine running just so that you can stuff you and your shareholder's pockets rather than helping your employees, who by the way are your customers too! Why be loyal to you when corporations are not loyal in return?!

What things do people around you keep repeating related to programming?
For me it is surely "linux is soooo permissive", which is true but still funny when people start saying it unrelated and simply as a mean to jokingly explain why something doesn't work how is supposed to. Even if the problem is not even on a computer4 -
Why is mobile development still a thing?
Hear me out. All these simple apps, like shopping centre discount, eshops, vinted, other kinds of webapi consumers. Many have a website and a phone app.
Why??? Why the phone app? What's wrong with just embedding your responsive webpage into a webview and call it a day ffs?

The thing with youtube videos and online programming courses is that they don't show you the production way of doing stuff, this is one of the reasons why new developers think they aren't good enough or that they just don't know what they're doing. If I someday become an educator, when I'm teaching I'll be sure to make my students know how to build solid production applications and not some lousy side project that can't even handle considerable traffic.3

I don't like when client decide which tech use in the project. I got some weird tech request like:
1. Move existing database from postgresql to Hadoop because hadoop is Big Data (is kinda move from amazon rds to amazon s3 just why? have you index, cluster your postgresql table?)
2. Move from mysql to postgresql because mysql cause deadlock (maybe their previous developer just fucking moron)
In this situation we just explain why we don't use that and propose alternative solution. If they insist with their solution either ignore it or decide not continuing the project.5 -

So I got the LSTM working in keras.
Working from a glorified tutorial.
Why the fuck do people let their github pages go down with no other backup?
Especially if its a link in your blog?
Why would you do that and not post the full script (instead of bits and pieces interspersed with *partial* explanations)?
In any case, its working and training on a test set and examples just to debug my own understanding of the process.
Once thats done I can generate some training data and try training on a small set. If that goes smoothly and the loss looks like it is heading in the right direction, then I'll setup the hardware for the private cloud and start writing the parallel computing component.2 -

How the fuck is Firebase still a thing? I just spent hours debugging a random "not authorised" error, only to find out you need to enable a deprecated API even if you're only using the new (recommended) one. Do they tell you about it? And why the fuck does the official SDK send image URL as { "imageUrl": "http://..." }, when the endpoint expects it to be { "image": "http://..." }? Why the fuck does the documentation mention both options interchangeably, while only the latter one actually works?7 -
Why does github have a field in my profile setting where i can set my pronouns? She/her they/them Are you fucking retarded? How can such an intelligent service of github downgrade their intelligence to the level of those mentally ill people? I keep ignoring that mental illness bullshit but now im surprised that even intelligent people are taking it seriously. Anyone who thinks genders.amount > 2 returns true is a mentally sick person in my eyes. Why is this pronouns bullshit even being mainstreamed as normal? Heres my advice: instead of standardizing pronouns as normal, why not send those people to mental asylum hospital and give them some treatment since they desperately need it?10

Strapi...
So much promise let down by poor documentation. Adding custom commands is not in the docs but is supported in the code.
Spent 2 weeks through trial and error trying to get custom commands written to import content and its been a pain in the ass.
When your documentation is written, give it out to novice or intermediate programmers with minimal exposure to your system. Note down their issues and improve the documentation.
Hell, why not add a form to submit feedback on the docs to a dedicated team of writers.
Anyone here good with Strapi who could assist?1 -

A medical doctor gets fired for clearing a football player to play for not having an injury.
What does that do to the intellectual ecosystem?
These people go to college on full scholarships…to throw balls around?
I mean it sounds very silly when its put that way, but the initiation and training of a doctor is not a joke.
Why is this money being spent on football players?
I think operating tables should be televised, with announcers, and pundits, and star surgeons,
A person placing bets would need a working knowledge of the operating table if they are going to be placing bets.
We are smarter than this as people. Sports should not be just hulking drones throwing balls around.5 -

Do you believe that the earth shouldn’t be touched and people should just leave nature alone? I thought about this and came to the conclusion that natural resources play a part in keeping the earth balance hence why you shouldn’t fuck with it.
For example. Oil serve as an insulator between the core and the surface hence why the surface of the earth has been habitable for thousands of years and not just a hot rock where nothing living can exist.
But then I asked myself? If the earth is all natural and everything thing on it is was created to maintain a balance, WHY DID IT CREATE HUMANS? Because all we are doing is slowly depleting the earth.
Why did it allow us to become so intelligent to start fucking it up?
Is it that we are a virus rather than apart of the earth?
There’s this theory that says whenever a civilization becomes too advance and start fucking with the earth and doing things they aren’t suppose to do a shift in the earths magnetic pole occurs and causes all natural disasters to unfold basically ending life as we know. Something like a reset.
What do you think?21 -

Management suddenly decides they wanted to see if a new process is any good and decides to load all the work on 2 people ( including me ) and keeps the deadline 5 days later ( when one person is taking a 3 day leave in this 5 days ).
In this situation, the other person involved in the process, routinely infuriates me by suggesting we fix up something within these days and not worry about readability or code quality. My argument is the POC is subject to heavy changes, so why not make it more "modifiable" from the start and not create a sphagetti which i would be left trying to fix when he goes on leave.
I would be blamed for slowing down things unnecessarily if i put forward my argument too sternly. Genuinely conflicted about whether to go on the offensive or to accept the reality and make myself uncomfortable by doing this faster.2 -
I had to contact technical support for an API. I’m pretty sure I was emailing with a bot because I was getting all sorts of stupid replies.
Me: I’m using your SDK for language X. It’s returned null for some properties. In the user portal, I can see there are values for those properties for the transaction. I don’t know why I’m not receiving them on my end.
Tech Support: Hi! I see the following was sent in the API response. [Sends api response to me.] You can also go the the portal to see those values.
Me: Yeah, I know. You just repeated everything I wrote to you. I don’t want to go to the portal. I told you I want to figure out why your SDK doesn’t seem to map those properties correctly when I receive the api response.
TS: Let me look at the docs. I think you need to send the properties you want in your request in order to get them back in the reply from the api. Such as <property>value<property> in the xml message.
🤨 The docs do not say that. They don’t even imply that.
Me: What the fuck?! That makes absolutely no sense. We have already established that the api **is** returning values for those properties. I want to troubleshoot why your SDK is mapping them as NULL. -

Do you want to know why all the popular open source projects have less-than-optimal, sometimes really dirty code?
It's because their developers ditched all the unnecessary stuff to just get the damn thing done. When I choose an open source dependency, I don't need unfinished stuff. I need a stuff that works and has all the features I need from the very start. If it works, I don't care about code quality in my deps.
This is the reason why dirty, rushed stuff with a great idea behind it gains popularity. PHP, Git, jQuery, the list is quite large.
While you've been busy polishing your files hierarchy, these guys already shipped their product, gained adoption, and their userbase doesn't need your product anymore.
This is applicable only for true open source, not "it's developed by a full-time team of principal developers and the CTO is fucking Kent Beck, it costs $1m per month but yea we have it on github".3 -
I hate the fucking Spring WebFlux and the goddamn Project Reactor on which it depends!
Even debugging a simple CRUD microservice with simple business logic is such a pain in the ass, exception handling has a lot of "magic" implicit stuff which makes me waste hours in fucking trial & error and I have to use very little breakpoints because if a request is paused for more than few seconds it gets terminated.
I love functional programming but why shove it in fucking Java making me waste 90% of my time in trying to guessing what the fucking framework is doing, why not just use Scala which runs in the JVM? We don't even need compatibility with legacy code since it's a greenfield project!
And before you ask yes, I read a fucking book about Project Reactor and Java reactive programming and a lot of docs on Spring, Spring Boot and Spring Web Flux.2 -
I have lost track of the whys, but I'm writing something that loads a datastructure not unlike specifications of C types (plus struct single inheritance and generics) from any DLL-s tossed in the same folder, then organizes them into a pretty database. Now I just gotta keep gradually broadening the scope until I get to the feature set of the modern C# type system.rant what is this not gonna halt another project at least i can show off my mathz i could've went with lua i really should stop writing in the tag row why
-
What the hell is the point of this small projects team spending 2-3 months on developing extensive logging system for an internal application for inside and outside customers to use if your application isn’t going to log any of the fucking errors. Sure you write the failure status to the database, but it just says failure with an even more vague explanation than microsoft’s errors. “An error occurred”. No shit, that’s why I’m looking in the logs and database to debug the application to get these files on their merry way so our company can stay in compliance with the state, feds, and not pay out the wazzoo in fines. All our other applications state where the error occured such as “failed to connect to the email server”, why can’t this one.

I hate working with sh*tty Devs
I used that term specifically.. No it's not about juniors, it's about those who pretend to be seniors.
In a major company project, one of us has to take a week or two to refactor that one "senior" dev work. When tested it performs poorly, when checked, it violates every SE principle and the business people are wondering why we keep seeing `refactoring User Stories/Tasks` and why we still don't have a working project yet. Yes, we will never have, that mess that `senior` dev created is almost impossible to refactor without major rework.
Now, major rework coming, we need to give something to that Senior so he doesn't feel left behind. Argue to never let him get anything in core or this company will go under...
In short, I hate working with sh*tty devs. -
Why redis, why?! You run "redis-cli -h <host>" and it looks like either it cannot connect to <host> or the redis-cli is frozen.
What was the fix? Adding "--tls" to the call. Why can't you just say "You are starting a non-tls connection to a remote but the remote wants to talk TLS"? Or give any other indication that you did reach the server but did not understand what it said and hint for TLS? I was hunting non-existent connectivity issues for hours just because there wasn't a good error message...3 -
Let's play a little stupid game!
I had a dream last night and when I woke up I was wondering:
"Which one of this PadLeft algorithms is faster in your opinion and why?"
I've performed a (100% not scientific) test in C# and have some results that I will share later, I'm curious what do you think first.
Let's do this! 😁34 -
Each time I see THAT, there is 50% chance that server will not reboot :(
Fucking linux....
Why, just why we don't have roll backs and all nice things we have in windows ?7 -
> totally disable logging on console
> logging is redirected instead on some 1200 separated files (no, not "log files rotated through 1200 days"; every part of the program has its own log file, and there's 1200 of them)
> still, in all those files, none of them contains MY log; somehow it disappeared
Why some people even chose to become developers will always elude me2 -
Why?! Why do companies need to build a useless application for their product every... single... time? It's not like I'm going to watch the state of my (future) pension every single day, I only want to update my personal information.
(I kinda get why, but still, you can get similar features out of a PWA as well, which is less annoying for the end user)2 -
Holy shit! Why is it so hard to find a JSON viewer for android that doesn't absolutely suck ass?
I want a viewer that:
-reads json from the clipboard
-queries json for strings in context
-allows copying of values, not the key and the value put together
Major bonus points:
-JSONPath querying
-Free/pay version without ads7 -
To those working in the US as software engineers, is it worth it? Would you recommend it ? If not, why ? And did you live all your life in the US or are you coming from somewhere else ?2

Open question:
Do you and your dev team openly embrace using a formatter for your projects, or do you not? And why?
My senior dev is trying to argue that it creates too much noise for commits, especially on older files and it's driving me nuts because I religiously use it (default TS formatter in VSCode btw, nothing crazy or super opinionated!)15 -
I've got a question for people who understand GO:
Why do I get this error in one of my projects but not in the other?
> gopls requires a module at the root of your workspace
Both projects lack module at the root of my workspace, but only one of them refuses to cooperate...
Bother.2 -
I really dont think the project manager who passed out from IIM recently deserves to be paid so much than us devs. I don't know why but I feel it's not fair to pay someone 3 times that of my salary for just sending emails and having some meetings..3

Why is no one ever talking about cli flags in OS X?
For instance: "ls / -lahtr" doesn't work in OS X.
The flags must be directly after the command.
And I have no fucking clue why. The only reason I can think of is that there must be some best practice paper and for the OS X version they compile a version that complies with those best practices.
I mean, not all programs do that. But a surprising amount.
And it is so annoying when I use a Mac. I have the habit of first saying what I want to do and finally adding flags at the end as an afterthought.
Recently, my wife couldn't make a curl command work she got from a tutorial... Turns out the curl command was written for a linux system and ended with a "-o filename" argument. Solution, move the argument to the front. Worked like a charm. But if you don't know about this; this might stop you dead in your tracks...
And the strangest thing... I never read anyone talking about it. Complaining about it. Or at least warning about it. Something like "hey, when you're on a mac, make sure to put the flags in front". Just acknowledging the existing of this.
Why is it that this quirk did not make it into public debate?6 -
So... I've been looking for a week on why my machine was braking tools on every piece...
Found out yesterday, it was machining without water....
Told the engenheir (my direct boss)... Started working at midnight and was the same...
Decided to fix it, besides the fact that I'm a temp and shouldn't be doing his job...
Can't fix it... To many broken pieces....
Well a few metal pipes like straws and some rubber bands and its fixed for now...
I really can't understand why a engenheir gets 10x more money and can't bother to fix the machines....
Well I know why... He's not the one paying for new ones when these brake.
Next: other machine Is working without oil...
And no, I'm not messing with that... In a few months they will just have to buy a new one.4 -
"Longest you worked without rest + why?" (2)
Oh, I am an idiot 🙂! 7 hours isn't nearly the longest I've worked without rest (see my previous rant.) I just remembered working non-stop almost for a day in the past.
It was for an annual 48-hour hackathon where people gathered to make games.
It made me promise myself not to work excessively long hours non-stop. My creativity level was way below the ground, and during the after-party, my body sort of kernel-panicked, and I started to become incoherent. I had to call a taxi to find my way home that day.
For the following years, I made sure to get some rest (e.g., go home at night to sleep, spend the lunch break time actually having 'lunch break' and not coding while you're at it, etc.) because I did not want to wreck myself any further. -
Working in a company where you can't even have your recent tabs when opening the browser and have the stupid corporate start page. At least there's Session Buddy where you can open a window with yesterday's tabs, but why on Earth would employees not have the possibility to keep the recent tab setting enabled? Especially when it was like this pre-merger.3

I have never understood the default configuration of Javascript Back-end frameworks.
The documentation says -> Install expressjs. Its a "framework".
But then u need to setup EVERYTHING yourself. Install cookie-parser, body-parser, io, routing FUCKING everything !!!
Why can someone not make it a standard installation covering the basic necessities ??5 -
I watched a few reviews for the new nvidia RTX 4070 Ti graphics card. One question on my mind is: why is it so huge?
⏺️4090 is huge -> ok I get it, 450W power is a lot of W
⏺️4080 is huge -> ok I guess, 320 W of power is a still a lot of W; although it should be considerably smaller than 4090 (but it is not? why)
⏺️4070 Ti is huge -> 3 slots size for this graphics card? What the actual hell? This card is rated just 285 W. It makes no sense
I do not get it. The only explanation I can find is that the manufacturer got so lazy they cannot be bothered to design 3 different cooling systems, so they reuse the same cooling system on all graphics cards. RIP4 -
Why the fuck do consultants / noob types LOVE using fucking props in react components. This app is complex, just make a fucking redux slice and use that. I'm not passing 23904 props to a component to get it to render. God13

Why do companies waste serious cash in office parties? I'm talking about those hundred-thousand-dollar extravaganzas that major tech companies seem to be addicted to.
Poll after poll finds that most employees would rather have the cash, so "kissing the collective asses of tech staff so that they won't leave" is not an explanation that holds up.
The "Roman Triumph" explanation also does not make any sense. If rich assholes want to flex their immeasurable riches, why would they invite mere mortals that do not put a lot of effort in being famous or pretty? Couldn't they invite the entire Victoria's Secret catalogue of models and the NE Patriots? Surely it would make for much more impressive photos of decadence.
The "Michael Scott" explanation also falls short. Companies spend serious cash on consultants and professional party planners, that are sure to know a lot of people. Money can and often does buy personality, so no rich asshole is ever a party dud.
Why else do they force most of their own staff into what they perceive as a "do not relax or you may get fired" loud and poorly lit meeting that takes hours to dress up for? What am I missing?5 -
Today marks the second day of me having to build an email template and I never hated anything more in my life than that. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE SO COMPLICATED? WHY CAN'T THEY UPGRADE THEIR STUPID RENDERING ENGINES SO WE CAN USE MORE MODERN METHODS?!? Sorry but I don't want to create an E-Mail and having to pretend its 1995. The table view is so outdated and I'm aware of the fact that some clients support divs but not Outlook (Outlook itself sucks pretty hard but thats another story). I just wanna be able to use grid, flex, etc. to build my template.
I HATE MY LIFE5 -
Why is it that so much of the Apache software for data is written in... Java?
I'm not a veteran Data Engineer, but I cannot imagine what makes Java better than Rust or Go9 -
Programming at a job to me is no longer creating something fun and valuable; it's more like figuring out why shit doesn't work, con-stant-ly.
It' s like coming in to your desk every morning, dreading the day because there's yesterday's shit to fix. "Hmm, what shall today be like? Oh yes, troubleshooting why my database model doesn't work, redesign it completely and break my mind over db details. The next day? Having to redesign my classes to implement new patterns because apparently the current design isn't good enough." Even if you work on new deliverables, that's just new problems in disguise anyway.
Pleasant? Not really.

I was called on a review meeting on why the task took so much time and why my performance is going down.
I clearly stated that I was not managed well and I had lot of dependencies in presence of my reporting manager. She didn't look happy. Now I'm kind of worried that she could act weirdly as women are also emotional beings taking everything to the heart.5 -

A 30 years old software "bug" caused 5k+ planes delays or cancelations and the software will be update in six years
https://abcnews.go.com/US/...
30 years old software?
Why has not being update yet?5 -
One of the more memorable friends through coding is a guy I met at 9am at what had to be an early lecture with 150+ students. We were both following it as part of a minor but the only ones there: we apparently didn't get the message that it was cancelled because we were no majors...
We decided to just work on the group assignment because why not and became friends.
Little did we know that we had already met dozens of times (but never really talked) the two years before as we are both members of the same students association, only strengthening the bond!
Sometimes not receiving a notice of cancellation is not that bad... -
dude why there so many dum fuck in this industry like people who just graduated , and don't know shit about tech or anything but flex and complain about shit just can accept that they don't know any shit this many years fucking noobs nothing like why are they , this don't deserve jobs just make bug and always call for help like why cant they figure out their shit, its just cant just spoon feed they every time, like i dont know what happens to this people after or they just survives in it? just tired of getting my ass on whenever they suck dude they dont know how to commit git lol , but never accepts , i am not talking about one person its like a species now , they dont even try to learn even tho they get jobs for no way , itrsucks2

My brother works in fintech sector. He had created an Options strategy after months of hard work and deployed the strategy in production via CI/CD.
However, the strategy didn't deploy automatically on Monday and few trades didn't happen leading to loss. His boss came down firing at him as to why strategy was not deployed.
Turns out the IT team had changed the password on Friday evening as per their routine password updates.2 -
Why are big software documentations versioned by url rather than adding the most current update to relevant sections and signifying it as such?
1) only select parts of the software is updated in between major version updates. Why duplicate the entire docs for only sparingly updating those parts?
2) references hold versioned urls that could go out of date. I imagine it takes some effort to have a banner on each page indicating whether this is the most up-to-date version of the software
3) deprecated documentation is redundant since it's no longer maintained. Why does it continue to exist? Not everyone has upgraded, you say. That, and I guess, it costs the maintainers nothing to have an idle folder 6 major versions behind the most recent
I already have a folder for my v1 but I'm considering pulling them into a permalink. What challenges or disadvantages are there to doing so?6 -

So, I have a friend and he asked me to do a discord bot for him. (The language was kinda up to me and I chose Python). Nothing complicated (theoretically). I coded it, tested it and sent it to him. But after installing it, he got a different issue EVERY single day. And he didn't change anything! The most infuriating part is, that I couldn't even reproduce the issues he had. WHY? Why can't it just work? Why can't a simple project not just be simple?4

Terraform + helm-chart ... I really ned a break. Who the fuck invented this shit.
The HCL format sucks
The documentation sucks
The dev tools suck
The debug output sucks
But I'm ok with that, I can manage.
But today really it shot the bird ... I can't have a fucking comma in a string? Because idk why the fuck helm-release tries to parse that fucking string and wants to make an array or whatever out of it? Why, you fucking abomination?
Something in the docs? Nah, who reads them anyway.
Because you know it's totally not strange that a string is analyse and oh wait there's a comma in it, the dev surely wants me to make an array out of it, because you know ...
So now I have to escape my fucking comma to prevent it to parse my fucking string. I just want to have a fucking string you hideous monstrosity ....1 -

is laravel app really enjoyable to write ?
i started as a laravel dev. the known story , all code in controllers etc. As i started to improve, fortunately i changed company, and worked with a symfony project. A symfony that looked like java. hundreds of classes, tests, yaml injections , objects for requests, for everything.
I thought that i missed the old laravel days, and i took an extra job on laravel again. I was soooo wrong.
It was not only that the code of the previous dev was inferior to what i am now used, it is that i have to be with an open documentation all the time. Even if the project is in the same version that i have used to earlier (an old one).
You have to check all the time the model settings, the migration, the magic tricks of model mass insert, the castings, the validation rules, why the tests are not finding some routes, why this, why that, how it is written this.
Excuse me, but i think the fun and easiness is far from what they say and what i thought it was. I start to change my mind and believe that inserting the request to a simple php object is more controllable than the gandalf tricks that laravel is doing, and you cannot know if it is worth your time to test it . And more importantly, you do not have to look at the cookbook, all the time@@@5 -

Is Apple alone who owns the rights to its systems? Or do users also own the system when they buy the iPhone? What I know is that users have a USER ONLY license, a non-private, limited and revocable license by Apple. And if what I think is true and that Apple owns its systems, then it is a private right for it, isn't that true?. So why are governments such as the governments of the European Union trying to impose laws on Apple and try to impose changes on Apple's systems even though the systems are private and not public or open source? Is this not considered an attack on private property? I don't know, I just want to get your opinion on the matter more..
What I know is that there are options other than Apple's own systems!!. Therefore, if you want to change, take Android instead of forcing Apple to change what Apple does not want to change.9 -

Not really a programming rant, but how fucking hard is it to spell someone's name in an email correctly. There is no single key for 'ph' and if there were it would be no where near the letter 'V'. But then again I'm just trying to help you out with your simple SQL script which you can't find out why you're not inserting data and you're only the director of informatics. Why is instagram so thoroughly broken and a user experience torture.
I know the standard answer of "As long as the core flows that hold up the popularity work, no one cares much", and yeah, true, but that's a reason for why no one fixes the broken stuff.
What I want to know is why is it so thoroughly broken in the first place? Granted, Facebook isn't the best of places but one would expect at least a certaim level of competency from a team coming from the same organisation that gave us React JS(even if Instagram did not originate there, they have been in the Zuck empire for a while now). Why do such thoroughly messed up UI/UX and features get pushed to prod in a company that has the time, resources, and talent to do things professionally(read: better than the mess that instagram is). Not to mention a fuck ton of missing simple features that would make using it much better experience (JUST LET ME AT LEAST COPY COMMENTS GODFRKINDAMNIT IF ENABLING EDITING COMMENTS WILL COST YOU YOUR FIRSTBORN'S SOUL)
Maybe I am somewhat biased since I use Instagram desktop more than the mobile app, but my point should still stand.2 -

Trying to make a nodejs backend is pure hell. It doesn't contain much builtin functionality in the first place and so you are forced to get a sea of smaller packages to make something that should be already baked in to happen. Momentjs and dayjs has thought nodejs devs nothing about the fact node runtime must not be as restrained as a browser js runtime. Now we are getting temporal api in browser js runtime and hopefully we can finally handle timezone hell without going insane. But this highlights the issue with node. Why wait for it to be included in js standard to finally be a thing. develop it beforehand. why are you beholden to Ecma standard. They write standards for web browser not node backend for god sake.
Also, authentication shouldn't be that complicated. I shouldn't be forced to create my own auth. In laravel scaffolding is already there and is asking you to get it going. In nodejs you have to get jwt working. I understand that you can get such scaffolding online with git clone but why? why express doesn't provide buildtin functions for authentication? Why for gods sake, you "npm install bcrypt"? I have to hash my own password before hand. I mean, realistically speaking nodejs is builtin with cryptography libraries. Hashmap literally uses hashing. Why can't it be builtin. I supposed any API needed auth. Instead I have to sign and verfiy my token and create middlewares for the job of making sure routes are protected.
I like the concept of bidirectional communication of node and the ugly thing, it's not impressive. any goddamn programming language used for web dev should realistically sustain two-way communication. It just a question of scaling, but if you have a backend that leverages usockets you can never go wrong. Because it's written in c. Just keep server running and sending data packets and responding to them, and don't finalize request and clean up after you serve it just keep waiting for new event.
Anyway, I hope out of this confused mess we call nodejs backend comes clean solutions just like Laravel came to clean the mess that was PHP backend back then.
Express is overrated by the way, and mongodb feels like a really ludicrous idea. we now need graphql in goddamn backend because of mongodb and it's cousins of nosql databases.7 -

Why do any tutorials on any kind of technology start their projects on ports like 3000/8080/4200/5000 and so on? Why not start them on port 1/2/3/65536/etc.? It works with one article but not with another. There MUST be some very exact problem with one of my images, but Twitter just doesn't fucking give me a proper log.1

These morons uses to associate devices with rape prostitution and sex acts..
Why make them comment about the same things ? Sucks but not fair to be punished for what lying whores were doing in the background

I'm troubled by the stuff I made back when I did not know how I should use Unity's Animator. I have these animators that open and close a dialog with transition effects, but I used Triggers to accomplish it. With Triggers, no matter how I construct it, it seems that there is always this weird edge case that can only happen if Triggers are spammed.
Why I did not use Bools for open/close state is beyond me. And I have tons of those Animators to fix. FML. -
Fucking mql5 - code gives no errors, it should create a file but it does not. Why is that?

I have searched all my computer, there is no such file.9 -

i want to stab him.
and the question I have to ask is.
why perform the actions that bring me here closer to just giving into my impulse ?10 -
Not asking a dev to do a whole document rundown of built components and then asking creative to fucking add new shit making the document worthless. Oh yes. Then complain why the document was not up to date.

So I wanted to learn rust, and I was thinking: practice is the best way so naturally I went on to leetcode
After spending 4 hours to solve two questions I was like: fuck it, why do I need to go back and forth to the discussion page, why not just show it to me.
So now I spent 4 days to develop a chrome extension that shows the top 10 solutions in the discussion page for a specific question with specific language.
I showed to friend and she was like: you look at the discussion?
The moment I realized that I developed a hot pile of garbage3
