Our dev team got a new manager. On our first face 2 face meeting:
Manager: So, what technology are we using for web apps?

My brother and I have been messing with our IBM 5150 and doing cool stuff with it. I got it to play a youtube video via telnet via my bro's mac via mplayer with libcaca (ascii video output) + youtube-dl (a youtube downloader. The mac is doing all the heavy lifting, but it is still cool to see these images on a IBM 5150, just by typing a few commands on that old keyboard... more fun projects to come with this old thing.

So i was playing around with terminal apps in node.js a few weeks ago and made a CLI version of devrant. Images get converted to ascii just for fun. This is about was far as it goes for me though - anyone want to take it over? (The code is shit - this was a midnight proof of concept). Currently there's pretty much just the rant listings, the login works too but I think @dfox would need to approve it's use.
Next script I'm writing is going to be a terminal rant posting tool so I can rant from my server 😉

Large corporation. CEO tells everyone to attend this mandatory meeting via the internet.
I work remotely. I can't log in, meeting is full. But our colleagues have made a parallel meeting just for us in the meantime, where I could hear them make fun of the meeting, which is basically the CEO showing some Powerpoint slides to a room with 10 people. Nobody can either see the slides (bad camera or connection) or hear the CEO (crap microphone). 1000+ people watching this "mandatory" meeting that lasted for an hour. Nobody had any idea what it was about in the end. Just slides and muffled voices. -

I joined this place when I was roughly 16. I spent nice 2 years here. :)
I saw more people join and have fun and not be toxic. I've made friends here and this community supported me like literally no one had before. I felt like when I was down, people listened and people answered. People wrote funny rants and posted memes which helped me out when I was sad and I didn't know how to rant about it. Everyone here is kind. Everyone here is cool.

Management had the idea to have a hackathon on saturday. Everybody should gather ideas what to do on this day, but top priority is to have fun.
In the end, management decided that we should work on tasks from our backlog.

A lot of times during holiday parties, I meet new people.
Afterwards, often a quick group chat is created to share pictures with all the people there.
Every goddamn time we come at this point again where this is done and since WhatsApp is nearly considered a requirement to function in society (Netherlands) and I refuse to use it and other mainstream media...
The moment that I have to explain why I don't use WhatsApp arrives, yet again. I don't find it awkward anymore but it doesn't improve the atmosphere and getting called paranoid for the rest of the party also isn't the most fun thing ever!

Today the lead developer and I where loling and wtfing hard to the following code:

Mind you, we had no clue why he named the variable $trunca, and even then it had been set at the top of the file as 1 to begin with....was never used up to this line and $looked_column had also a set to true.

New HOE came. He “streamlined” the processes and “standardised” the policies. And in turn.. fucked up the whole startup feel of my company.
I saw it happening right in front of my eyes in a matter of only few months.
Earlier, things were flexible, work was fun, people were even ready to put in more hours because we were all having fun. Now, work feels like work, fun is gone, frustration has become normal, and the most frustrating part is that.. WFH is now a “privilege”.
Fuck this shit man! That fucker exhausted the whole company in just a few months. Given enough time, he will be the end of this company.7 -

I love coding, solving challenges or making something. But the current state of most of the jobs in the industry is sad, specially in this part of the world. I am stressed out and depressed when stuck in a never ending daily grind.
There are days when I seriously consider the idea of leaving the industry and start my own restaurant or cafe. It feels like coding for fun and doing something else for a living could be better.
Am I overthinking this? Are there any other people who are feeling the same?

'Twas a fun day today...
Construction workers cut into the fiber line to a medium sized company this morning. We got the splicer guy on site quickly, but it is going to take a while, because the whole cable needs to be extended a bit in order to repair it. We got the company online through a LTE modem for the repair duration. Oh and also had to set up VPN on all PCs to connect to their server in our datacenter. A fun day indeed.

Not usually a person to rant about spacing and conventions but this is great.
4 devs, all using IntelliJ. Now IntelliJ auto-changes tabs to spaces which is nice, and GitHub doesn’t really care as long as the spacing is consistent. Now here is the fun part: 2 devs have 4 spaces per tab, 1 has 3 spaces, 1 has 5 spaces.
GitHub merge conflicts everyWHERE.

After 25 years coding in all types of languages and environments, I’m no longer having fun.
It now seems like it’s a fight to get interested in the code. I used to be something that I would spend hours / days doing. Now I just want to walk away from the code.
Is it true (do you think) that after a while all you see is a for loop, an if statement, a null check and you just think to yourself. Fuck this! Because I think I’m there.

Found out other team's project result about performance for uni assignment. It's that Matlab is the fastest, followed by python and C++ is the slowest.
They are gonna get roasted during presentation (by many people in the audience including me).

Just made a proof of concept expression templates based linear algebra library for my own projects. It was actually a lot of fun to make, and seeing it spit out optimized, loop-fused code with no temporary variables...magic.

A Gentoo installation might be fun, but it sure as hell isn't worth it, both in time and effort. Broken audio, broken video, broken stability. Would anyone actually be interested in POC'ing an open source alternative to devRant? Unfortunately it seems that this platform is going to the ground with little to no maintenance and even pipeless.io giving 502s.
I wouldn't expect anything real proper of it but could be a fun community project. Would require some planning though and probably more than just the odd person contributing.

all languages can be useful, coding for games, coding for apps, for hacking.
don't choose language because people says it's the best language.

Last year I changed jobs from a large multi-national to a small local agency (which happens to be run by friends of mine).
One of the reasons for doing this was that my work involved more office politics than *actual* software development, and had just plain stopped being fun.

For one of our clients we have to connect to (a lot) of third-party APIs. Often even SOAP APIs!
Now I hear you protest "But that is no fun at all! SOAP APIS SUCK!" Which is true, more often than not. 😔
BUT! My friend started an internal API-SNAFU Trello board. Every time you get bitten in the ass by some ill conceived fuck-up of an API, you get to add your complaint to the board.
Beside giving as something to reciprocally rant about, the board also serves a serious function: depending on the amount of fuck-ups an API has been known to make, the price for working with that API will go up.

Last year, I had an inevitable programming session while I was drunk. I didn't struggle at all. I programmed like composing a poem. Btw I have been programming for last 18 years and never enjoyed this much after college programming labs.
Since then I've been drinking before complicated logics and never disappointed.

For the first time ever, I’m writing an academic paper while worrying it will be too long, as opposed to being too short. The difference with this paper is that it’s on something I’m passionate about. I’m having fun writing this one - I’m getting paid to do something that doesn’t feel like work. Almost a month has gone by with my new job, and I already hate it. I thought it would be fun... but it is the worst!

This is a small program which first gets the address of the String variable and then 100 times the address of the addr variable, prints that address and dereferences it 101 times, to get the actual String back. But does it have an actual use case?

You are free to use any design you want, however you can implement more advanced features that would lean towards specific designs. What will be punished is that you don't have a dynamic memory allocator. We will run the tests for these offline after the deadline

This is one from when I was in school, so I wasn't a dev but it made me feel like a CS student badass.
A class mate and I were having a discussion about his study habits. Basically he was freaking about the mount of studying he was going to have to do for this class:

Me: wait you bought the book? Also we took this same professor for several classes. His syllabuses are always huge. What did you get in the prereq to this class?

So I'm working on a Gnome shell extension. Which is a nice integration wtih Todoist. It's far from done but it's starting to shape up.
From all projects and things I've done, this is a pain. There is almost no documentation so I'm almost entirely reliant on source codes of other extensions.
And yeah, stackoverflow isn't going to help you...

My JS app can crash IE11. Totally reproducable.
Had a fun debugging session to find out how this is triggered. Happens inside a deeply recursive call in a library I'm using which redraws the DOM.
Found a hacky workaround to avoid that as I see no real solution. It's not like I'm responsible for fixing IE. These are the days where I'm happy I'm mainly a backend dev...4 -

After having my soul suck away by "corporate", I installed VS code on my Windows 10 gaming machine.
Now, I have a pretty hardcore dev setup on my MacOS (it's unix-based and it's good, so stop the hate). I'm talking about fully automatized Rakefile that will provision it from scratch: vim, macvim, tmux, iterm configs, 15+ brew tools, 15+ brew-cask tools, themes, plugins, etc.
Installing VS Code, Node and MongoDB on Windows, just for the fun and giggles, and not having any of my hardcore tools, made me feel like... it's something silly and fun again. I'm once again that softcore developer with no stress and no constant self-reminder to improve workflow effectiveness.
Made me a little happy.

Yesterday, my team had a react crash-course workshop.
It was like "you have to import a couple of libs, use 'em in different react elements you pull up and Tadaaaa! Magic is happening and your app works".
This workshop was the pinnacle of "intense".
I understood 60% of the stuff.
My team-mates about 15%.
So react is the front-end technology of choice after our architectural-team. The other teams have to use this the technology for their UIs.

Had a fun adventure this morning. Had to deliver some bags to some houses. Entered the addresses in Google Maps. Off we go. First house, no problem. Second house, and Google is taking me on a weird route, through some parking lots and stuff. Finally, it wants me to turn onto a bike trail. WTF? My Google maps is set for bike routes. Went a lot faster when I set it to car. No wonder there were so many bikes and the road seemed so narrow.1

I decided I am going to get full into Minecraft modding. It will be an opportunity to learn Java and Kotlin. I want to explore some game ideas in a well defined sandbox.
Some things I want to explore.
1. AI that helps you build and survive. This fascinates me and seems like it could be a good challenge. I like the idea of learning how to separate structures into chunks. I think I will learn a bit about tree data structures here. Maybe learn something about BSP trees (if applicable).
2. The idea of an RPG quest system tacked onto a sandbox. I want to spawn structures and create non-repetitive story lines. Minecraft can be really desolate if you are not playing on a server. Worlds tend to be empty and devoid of story.
3. Maybe try a hand at terrain gen. This could be fun to explore entropy math. It is fun to draw things with math.
I am sure I will come up with other fun things to explore here.9 -
Hardware Developing.
My current school project where I build a gps thief lock for my moped had me realized one thing. I don't want to go into Hardware Developing. The first problem took me about 4 months until I finally gave up and solved it differently. And this goes on and on and on. You fixed something and the next day it doesn't work anymore for some reason. I never had this problem when coding. It's fun to do stuff with electronics but coding is just way more rewarding. Anyone else had the same experience?1 -

So you guys have seen my Unreal Engine adventures. I have to use a plugin for it, on top of everything, to extract some data. I've been using this plugin since ages on another pc, but now I had to set it up from scratch since this is a new project, new models, etc.
There is a new version. If I use the new one, it will break the chain which is to follow.

After hours, and tons of hacks and outcommenting stuff (there is physics involved with which I do nothing), it finally starts doing something. Finally!

but turns out some other person p is using an appleId with my personal email from a year.

I had to build a few packages today from a git source.
Everything just plain text or shell scripts - so no fancy shit, no buildsystem... Nothing.
I was painfully reminded why I had forgotten a lot about dpkg package builds.
Fun facts:
- seems like impossibro to define an output directory for debuild (../ from source which must be pwd/cwd)
- i used /opt/<vendor_name>... Purging the deb from system deletes opt too, as it is empty
- reprepro (or whateva it is called) fails with an "uncommon GPG error" instead of saying "I don't know which key to use"
- creating rolling release numbers (as the packages won't have a real versioning system...) is fun - when you remember that date isn't sufficient, as the time part is necessary to build multiple packages (versions) per day
Compared to an Gentoo ebuild, this was really rocket science....
Guess as soon as someone does not follow the debian way, he must be shunned and exiled. At least it felt like this ....

Learning C/C++ started to become fun, mainly because I've managed to do seemingly cursed stuff lately.
For example, today, I learned you could totally call a class member function using a type-matching nullptr variable. The 'this' variable is so null that it will crash as soon as the program hits 'this', though, but the control flow does go into the function.
It's not *that* cursed once you learn the behind-the-scene stuff, but that kind of weird s#!+ is funny, even amusing for me, who've mained languages other than C/C++.15 -
I cycle between games I play. I am now back to Minecraft. Playing FTB OceanBlock. It is progression lite. Less of a grind with short and long term rewards. It is like a skyblock, but you can start on an actual island. I am really enjoying the mods FTB developed just for this modpack. The modpack has plenty of tech in it to satisfy my need to build something purely for fun.5

Slowly adapting Go to some microservices projects I have. Shit is intuitive as fuck and I believe it has to do with what lil knowledge I had of working with C back in uni and by myself. For the web Go fits quite nicely. Really loving my time working with this language.

At a previous job I worked with Linux for ages and git used to how streamlined it is when working with a console. I then moved to Windows (to make games I'm Unity3D, which was awesome!) and found myself pining for a decent console. I finally found ConEmu which has a multi tab feature!

Someone, somewhere, in the standard C library headers for my particular libc implementation, is #undef'ing assert() unconditionally and it's causing massive headaches.
Fuck the C preprocessor. There's no way I can track this down it seems, but my assert implementation is being quietly ignored and I have no recourse for it.
Gotta change all of my asserts to a different name now. Fun.

"Macro expansion ignores <token> and everything after it"
does NOT mean that macro expansion on general ignores this token. What it DOES mean is that the macro expanded to something, then the parser was invoked, and the parser stopped consuming tokens at the specified point.
In normal human speak, this means
"This token is invalid in its context after macro expansion. Refer to the generated code for concrete error."
I spent hours moving intermediate results into macro parameters because I thought the error meant that your macro cannot expand to the second half of a comma-separated list or whatever, until I got the same message about '(' which is very obviously permitted macro output and doesn't even really make sense given that it's not a token.2 -

I was using the one and only Google to look up fun games to play. I found a game on this website called "scratch", which was actually a site that taught people how to code. I liked games, and I wanted to make them. So I did. The rest is history.

So I was writing some C code, pretty simple code. I had to pass a matrix to a function. The matrix had been globally defined as arr[100][100]. But the actual size of the matrix was stored in 2 vars m, n. Now when defining the function if I do like this:
void fun(int a[][n])
The code doesn't work as expected but when defined as:
void fun(int a[][100])
Works perfectly.
I have no idea why this is happening, any insight will be very helpful.5 -

Wanted to add a simple log entry when a model changes state in a certain way.
Unit tests pass, functional tests pass, manual tests through application GUI pass.
But for some fucking reason the single line logging call I added results in an error 500 when the application is accessed through a REST API.
Going to have a fun day tomorrow debugging this shit. -
I've been in a rut lately... I haven't been programming as much as I used to and haven't had fun/exciting projects to work on. I think most of this is due to a lot of life changes happening at once. Regardless, I have felt super unmotivated lately and want to get back to my happy place -- coding. Have you guys ever experienced this "rut"? Right now my current job is primarily a support position with a bit of development. But it's not nearly enough to feel like I'm advancing my development skills. Any feedback is welcome 😌3

The timing for this weekly rant is quite perftect, as I have actually just finished rewriting JavaRant! :D I redid a lot of work tried to make it very easy to use, and I think it has improved a lot.
This was also a nice occasion for me to set up Jenkins on my personal server to use that as a CI server (not that it's really necessary, but it is fun).

Started working on a library to allow manipulation of bit sets. It will read in bits in 1 to 8 bit packets and tack them onto a structure that is represented by sequential bits. It will include ways to interpret the bits in 1 to 8 bits per mapping. Each mapping will be able to do logical operations on the bits. The whole point is to be able to take a stream of possibly malformed bits and try and make sense of them.

I'm creating a little tool for myself on a web page, including server-side php, css, html, mysql and jquery, all just for fun and the experience.
I've got several ideas on how I want this tool to work and behave ...
But it's fucking difficult to wrap my head around all those technologies available. I don't know how to achieve certain things (yet) and what even to look out for😣

Today was fun, i set up a dedicated minecraft server on my old laptop, to increase fps when I play on my shitty phone now it runs real smooth. The server is running on a proxmox vm - ubuntu server.

I am building a synth program for producing waveforms such as binaural. The programs I have used in the past have been mediocre.
In that project I am working on a realtime scope to visualize the waveforms. It is fun to learn how to streamline moving data between parts of the application. Right now it has a lot of unnecessary data copying going on, and resizing of vectors. So I am reading some books on high performance C++ to learn how to do this better. As part of this I am thinking about building a circular buffer so the vector is never resized and is always in contiguous memory.

So I'm being asked to move to a different country for a couple of months. While, this would have generally been a fun thing, the deadline's pretty tight. Add to it the fact that the knowledge transfer is going painfully slow and I'm already being asked to finish tasks on tech/stack I've never ever seen before. It's a mess!7

I'm wanting to basically make a program or collection or scripts to automate all the boring parts of my life (cause I'm a lazy shit basically)
Any idea on what would be the best language to do this. I'm thinking python tbh. The end goal is going to be bills being payed ( I will out money manually into a PayPal account or something for this) and shopping being ordered to my house. Like I said I'm thinking python but wondering if there is anything better. Trying to get a multi container setup using nginx (also in a docker container) to work with web sockets. There's a chance that the load balancer will also cause issues later. And the front end uses nuxt, which will probably also cause issues once we turn server side rendering on as well.
This is not really something I've studied deeply before.

Honestly turned out to be like any other mobile free to play... And I couldn't figure out what was so fun about it.. Probably just the small rewards that keep u coming back but eventually the lvls are pretty impossible... Only a whale can get there... Or sometime really dedicated to the game

My least successful one.. This is definitely dwm-status.
It is a daemon which sets the status bar of dwm with many configuration options. The main selling point is the way it updates: It listens to updates like file changes, dbus messages, output of a running process to be as less power consuming as possible.
Was a lot of fun to dive into rust! :)

Hello, I'm new to programming and I need to write a website that allow some people to bet for sports match scores (without any money, just for fun). I want it to have leaderboard, personal statistics, easy way to add and remove teams from database (last one for administrator). My question is what programming language/maybe framework will be the best for that? I'm interested only in this bet system because rest is almost done. Thanks for help4

Google will be doing its last online coding competition in April. They've been running 20 years. Personally I think this kinda thing is one of the highlights of being a programmer, a load of random people around the world coming together to do their fun, nerdy hobby.

Most of the web stuff I have done in the past have been PHP, Wordpress, cgi, etc. I read about nginx and was very impressed by what it accomplished in the last 20 years. Now I have a desire to play with this tech for fun.
What I want to do:
- create, manage, and launch minecraft servers
- provide a web interface for managing servers (I would like to learn how to make the server use the infrastructure of nginx to be managed like its other services)
- make this packaged so others can use this (probably on github)
I don't know anything about nginx other than it is really really cool, can serve massive amounts of web pages, and can do a whole lot more than that.
Question:
Is nginx suitable for this? Is this a big learning curve? Will I have fun doing this?
I am currently running a multi-instance minecraft server being managed by a piece of software called Crafty Controller. It is really neat. However, I am finding it buggy. I also see that the next version of this software will be behind a patreon. This is really disappointing. So this is spurring me to consider building something fun for myself, and if useful, for others.
I will most likely do very barebones and inflexible web interface that just gets the job done. I know enough to get by. So I assume I have a large learning curve ahead to do this.
Any advice? Is this going to turn into a large time sink?2 -
Last weekend I started a project with a Angular front end and a WordPress backend.
The front end is for me so I can do the work faster. The backend is for the client that is slow at learning new technology. It's easiest to keep her WordPress setup
It's been a lot of fun setting up the jwt authentication but creating users has been a pain. I'm determined to work through it though.
Has anyone here else tried this? Any tips?4 -
I had this dell server lying around and finally got to make a virtualisation server out of it.
It is now running xcp-ng as its hypervisor, with a CoreOS VM in it, containing a docker container serving xen-orchestra for managing the server.
Enterprise grade hardware really is a thing of its own. Also sysadmin type of stuff is quite fun. I look forward to be playing with it some more. :)1 -
Just watched the movie Caveman again after about 7 years since the last time. The movie never gets old. The fun part is relearning the language of the movie again. It is funny that a lot of successful actors may have made their debut in this movie.

An explanation to this...
In JS whenever it sees '==' it has a set of rules that it follows before comparing quantities...
One such rule is...
When we compare a number with a boolean using '==' it first converts boolean into number then compares the two quantities...
So in this case..
When we convert true to number we get 1 and when we compare 1 and 2 they are obviously unequal hence we get false...

Doing office even when it's vacation day today...
Not because I am a workaholic or there is work pressure from company...
But because I like doing my work as a developer and it's quite peaceful and fun to code for some hours rather than idling around at home figuring out how to kill time especially during this lockdown period...

Partial thoughts, are thoughts that sound like they should have more to them. However they are intentionally left short to create a sense that more is to come. This creates a state of anxiety in people and their desire for closure. The sentence is more effective if you say the last part of the sentence with an increasing pitch. This indicates there is more to the story. When in fact there is no more to the story.
Here is an example:
"I saw this guy walking down the street..."
People will automatically assume there is more to this story. So they will say something like, "And then what?" The response is: "That is it. That is what I saw." This is the peak time of frustration. They may even argue with you or storm away. Be prepared to be called names.

Hehe, no, I am not going to leave you high and dry. In high school a dude I knew would always make fun of my friend. So I started doing these partial stories to the dude. He would get mad and storm off each time. I would do this several times per day. So it can be a tactic to deal with difficult people. -
I have been tasked with planning a feature retirement.
Basically the plan is to move this feature to another plan where it makes more sense and is more stable.
Now we don't have any data on how many or which customers are using this. And I need to plan a migration for them.

You know what sucks? Android having only 2 languages for their android app documentation why can't it at least support rust or typescript or other languages, im sick of all of this "fun" stuff
