So, someone submitted a 'bug' to Mozilla.
As some of you may know, in the next year, the new mass surveillance law in the Netherlands is going into effect.
Another fun fact is that the dutch security agencies/government have their own CA (Certificate Authority) for SSL/TLS certificates.
The new law says that the AIVD (dutch NSA/GCHQ equivilant) is allowed to hack into systems through obtained certificates and also that they're allowed to INTERCEPT TRAFFIC THROUGH OBTAINED PRIVATE SSL/TLS KEYS.
So someone actually had the fucking balls to submit a fucking issue to Mozilla saying that the Dutch State certs shouldn't be accepted anymore when the new mass surveillance law gets into place.
This person deservers a fucking medal if you ask me.68 -
New Dutch (or european?) law requiring https for any website with a contact form or higher is going into effect very soon. Were contacting customers so they can still be on time with this, this is how most convo's go:
Collegue: *explains*
Client: Im sure my security is good enough...
Collegue: i'd really recommend it, we've got free options as well!
Client: its just a secure connection, whats the big deal...
Collegue: *more arguments*
Client: I just don't see the point, security.... well.... does it really matter that much...
Collegue: Google might place you lower in the search results if you don't get a secure connection.
Client: 😶😥😵 uhm so what were the https options again? 😅
I hope they all die a painful death 😠26 -
My company just fired 20 people, and the next day instuted a program so salaried employees have to clock in and out. Of course not to effect our pay, just to keep their paranoid asses breathing down our necks. Also, no clocking in remotely so all the work I do from home won't be taken into account. Fucking micromanaging, ball-licking, scum-fuck, MBA, morons couldn't run a company if their lives depended on it. When will these soul-less, suit-wearing, shit-scarffers learn that treating your employees with respect and valueing actual work over bullshit metrics, is a better business strategy than treating them like fucking sheep to the slaughter. Fml, I gotta find a new job...33

practiseSafeHex’s most incompetent co-worker follow up: Candidate 1, “T”.
(For those wondering WTF I’m talking about: https://devrant.com/rants/1148190/...)
Forgot to mention something that happened with T that I find hilarious. T had a pretty profound effect on the company / team. It was a small startup, CEO + 4 of us, so we were all kinda close.
The day T was fired we decided this was too big of a moment to forget, so we created T_____ day, and to this day despite all working in different places we still meet up for drinks on October 24th to celebrate getting rid of that nut bag.2 -
A very sad side effect from my new job.
When I get home, I can't bear sitting behind a screen for longer than an hour or two.
I really want to keep on programming at home but I just can't put myself to it after work anymore :'(.
I actually feel pretty sad about it 😭24 -

Hey guys.
For you guys that are getting depressed looking for such nice setups, please remember something...
The Facebook effect:
You only see the tip of the Iceberg, the nice things, you can't see all the shit that other people won't show.
Yes, a few have some dream setups, but most of us are lucky to have two monitors or decent hardware...
What counts is that you can work in your machine... And take the posts as Ideas for your own dream setup, when you can afford it.
Mine (Ill show when I clean this shit up) is good enough and took me 2 years to get the minimum when I could afford it.11 -
You might know by now that India demonetized old higher value notes and brought in new one. The new ones easily tear off easily and generally feel cheaper and less reliable than pervious ones.
One interesting thing people discovered is that rubbing it with cloth makes the ink transfer to the cloth. Sign of crap printing. Here's government response:
The new currency notes have a security feature called 'intaglio printing'. A genuine currency note can be tested by rubbing it with a cloth; this creates a turbo-electric effect, transferring the ink colour onto the cloth
TL;DR: its not a bug, it's a feature7 -
My friend had the bright idea of making a version of bubble sort that plays a quacking sound effect on every swap. I added in different variations of the same sound effect for various conditions.
We named it "Quacksort," and one of the professors asked us to present it to the intro class.

Interviewer: Hello I’m calling for your phone interview now
Dev: You’re about an hour early calling but I can accommodate
Interviewer: Well it’s more convenient for me to do it now
Dev: …Alrighty then.
Interviewer: So I am from HR 😇*pause for effect*
Dev: …
Interviewer: Um, typically candidates start the interview by thanking me for consideration for this role.
Dev: Your job description was very vague so I don’t really know what I would be thanking you for.
Interviewer: 😡. It’s me that’ll be determining whether or not to pass you on to The Management.
Dev: …The Management?
Interviewer: Yes 🤗.
Dev: I’m no longer interested *click*.13 -

I used to work in a role that was basically tech support for engineers. Folks would call, we'd look at their code and see where things were going wrong.
One customer calls in, they're having timing problems with a satellite control system.
I dig down through their code, and buried in one of the modules is a comment to the effect of:
"Once we upgrade to Windows 98, we'll need to change this call to the precision counter"
They never did.
This system was running XP.
Somehow, they'd avoided destroying satellites despite having the code run on Win98, and ME without fixing that call. It wasn't until they upgraded to a multi core system and XP that their gyros stopped responding correctly.
Holy shit.9 -

Boss's son (who, despite being 19 and having no formal education or experience, was head of the technical team, consisting of one ops guys, one part-time web developer, and one part-time data entry/programmer) brought a cross bow to work. Just strolled in with it one day and took it back to his office, walking past all the visibly uncomfortable employees. One of the marketing ladies said to him "wow that's a bit scary" but it had no effect. He also wore a trench coat and kept a flying squirrel in a sock in his pocket.
At another place (not doing dev work) I had my manger tell me to type more slowly to get all my hours in, as I was promised 20/wk but they had about 3 hours of work for me to do. I quit after a month.7 -
After Hours of Coding.. I'm finally get in bed, but my mind can't overcome from fucking code and i can't sleep.
I don't know how to take proper and quick sleep after programming without taking any pills. Another side effect is after started programming 18 hr /day I'm losing my memory power, and can't remember some things properly.
And yes this image is Worth something to me... It describes my current situation.

It's the ray of fucking sunshine in a developer's perpetually annoying lifestyle. It is developer-made for developer-use.
An anonymous social platform where the app owners/founders/creators ACTUALLY LISTEN to user feedback!
Developers who have made up a million fucking ways to ask their fucktard co-worker/boss/client to go die, can exchange their creativity for ++s.
It's a platform to channel their rage into a creative rant and calm down a bit. It's like taking a long, deep, virtual breath.
Useless software/apps that behave like they were developed by 5 year olds, also take a hit sometime.
PS - Addiction is a common side effect.18 -
A real conversation I just had:
Brother: Have you heard of a game called Super Hot?
Me: Everyone has heard of that game.
Brother: Can you play it?
Me: I don't have the PC to run it.
Brother: I played it on my friend's Xbox.
Me: I don't have an Xbox.
*Pause for effect*
Brother: Can you build one?
(He's not stupid. He just likes to say things that will annoy me. We live in the same household, he would know if I have a PC or an Xbox.)12 -
My worst dev experience in 2021 has been a PHP-based CMS developped by lobotomized, single-celled organisms incapable of coherent thoughts.
A CMS even worse than WorstPress.
200k lines of "code", no use of packages, multiple entrypoints, no namespacing, all dependencies loaded by "include" at random places and everything is dependent of every thing else... a complete mess.
One could call it the butterfly effect CMS. Adding a space could completely crash the application.
At this point I've almost developped terminal eye cancer...5 -

The minister of human resources is a fucking idiot. Nobody including ministry employees knows exactly what will the rules be 6 hours ahead, but they take effect immediately and failure to abide is punishable. Yesterday the HR minister said that if public schools close down, everyone will have to repeat this year. In response to this and a few other questionable decisions on behalf of schools across the country, today the government banned anyone from closing down public schools including headmasters, public health services, the police and the ministry of human resources.2

This isn't as much of a rant as the story of my worst abuse of computer knowledge.
This happened a couple years ago. When I was in high school, I had this friend/enemy relationship with this guy, lets call him Thomas. He loved to pull pranks on people. He had a similar firend/enemy relationship with my brother, and after one prank, my brother decided to get revenge. And by revenge, he meant asking me to make a virus.
I knew the guy, and I agreed. We thought about what type of virus we could make that would be funny, and not too damaging. We decided on a program that would play annoying sound effects every few minutes. Short enough to be noticable, long enough that Thomas would give up and not try to investigate.
I won't bore you with the details of the program. It was a very simple C app, very small, named "Counter-Strike-Global-Offence-Free-Download-Totally-Legit.exe". It was clearly visible in task manager, but since it was so small and barely used CPU or RAM it would stay near the bottom. I tried loading a custom sound effect, but it turned out the windows default "invalid sound effect" was much more annoying than any custom sound I could find.
The "Infecting" portion consisted of moving the .exe to the start menu startup folder while Thomas left his laptop unattended. My brother handled this part.
I unfortunaly left the country soon after and never actually saw the effect the program had on Thomas. I assumed my brothers laughing would give it away rather fast and he could simply remove it from his startup folder. However, my brother told me he still complained about it for months, before finally bringing the laptop to a repair center that found the totally legit CS:GO exe. My brother ended up telling him soon after, but this was still the best prank I ever pulled. -
My colleague got fired. In my country, you need to work x weeks.
So they told him, his last day is start of June. Then they made an error in their official document... So his last day got prolonged with an other week... Then a different error in the new document.... An other week...
Now he got the news that his last day is prolonged with 2 weeks since he already had holidays planned before he got fired. He of course took his holidays thinking it would have 0 effect. They had the time to check this shit out.
He never got the news before that taking the holidays would again prolong his last day...
His last day was delayed 4 times...

My first rant...
Every time a coworker asks for an enhancement, the request is followed by "it should be easy to implement".
1) If you think it's easy, then you obviously know the code better than me, right?
2) The idea of the enhancement may be easy, but you don't think about how a small change can have a cascading effect throughout the entire process... and potentially in a catastrophic way.
Happens every time. Maybe I'm just bitch eating crackers at this point, but it annoys me when people analyze something they have no idea how to write themselves.5 -

I can't do school anymore. I get so many panic attacks. I was shaking the entire time I was writing my essay today. It's hard to focus when your brain is fucking freaking out. I'm missing deadlines, failing tests left and right.
Real talk, I'm not dumb. This was never a problem. My University fucked me up and now I can't even look at an assignment without an electric feeling and I don't know what to do.
I had a panic attack during the opening crawl of Star Wars. I had to leave the theater. My anxiety is going to give me a heart attack one of these times. I'm 18, why am I experiencing health issues like this?

Amazing client.
Want to add parallax effect to whole website (yes I also don't understand) after everything is done and final.
After they have moved up the launch date.
After they have asked me to also do the data entry not only the development.
After I specifically asked for ssh access, PHP7+ server and then they asked me to deploy it to their shared hosting through cpanel.
After ...
After ....

The saying "Perfect is the enemy of done" is so much BS.
The war on perfection is the enemy of artistic expression.
Look at old world architecture vs modern crap. Crafts are no longer a thing but stuff is only made as effeciently as it can be for the greedy and impatient.
The artists and craftsmen of old knew well that perfect was achievable and constantly strove to be more and more perfect in their arts and by side effect on themselves. In this mad world we've lost that to the pragmatists who see no value in the art of perfection or in those who do not value those who do.
The "doneists" can go fuck themselves. Perfectionism is where true artistic expression is at.14 -
I was browsing through xkcd when I came across this comic. Then I realised that a line break after every sentence is actually what I do when writing something in LaTeX. It has no effect in the end but I feel like it makes the document clearer while working with it. Anyone else who does this? ^^'1

There is this thing called the Pulfrich effect (https://youtu.be/Q-v4LsbFc5c a Tom Scott video about this).
Since I have 3 monitors, I decided to write a small C++ program which copies the image from the first monitor to the second and, with 5ms delay, also to the third.
That way I can sit down like 5 meters away and squint a bit to make both copies overlap. This creates a 3D effect for about half of the time of any moving video.
If you watched the video at the top you should know why, if the right image comes later the background has to move as in the video, and vice-versa.
Just some random thing that came to my mind and it's actually awesome! -
I will start my own companies:-
A.I. Job Centre (true A.I. would get bored of their employer and search for greater challenges)
A.I. Counselling (dev life)
A.I. Pornsites (because all A.I. should have a binary life of work and play <3)
A cake factory (so the cake is not a lie)
A.I. devRant (to lower their work efficiency)
I then use the funds from the above to hire a team and we'd develop a flawless Wannacry for A.I. (for a dementia like effect)

Where do you go/what do you do when you need to think out a problem?
Me, I take a drive. I'm not sure why but I seem to achieve maximum clairvoyance while driving around. Moreso at night than during the day, but the effect is still there when the sun is up. It's kind of weirdly meditative, to drive autonomously, only hearing the drone of the engine and whisper of the tires.
I know a lot of people resort to showers, or straight meditation, but I was curious if there were other, quirkier things people do to arouse their mind.7 -

Running Windows on my desktops and Linux on a couple of headless machines, creates a bonus side effect:
Far too often, some fanboy claims that his OS is the only true OS, and let's us know that he's permanently upset about life's greatest injustice, which is the fact that some people out there have chosen a different OS. So, running Windows AND Linux, creates the pleasure of always being one of those who run a different OS than the fanboys.
So, if you're an OS fanboy, it doesn't matter whether you run macOS, Linux or Windows - I will always have at least one machine running the *wrong* OS.

When you spend an hour making code changes that have absolutely no effect and tearing stuff out to find out what is going wrong... Only to realize that you're serving a different file from the one you're working on.1
-
It has taught me to accept that I am frequently wrong. Not just when faced with code but with people too.
All the years of "It can't possibly be MY code that's wrong" which of course always turns into "Well, I guess it was my code..." Had helped me think critically in relationships, politics, and many other areas of my life.
Programming had actually heavily influenced my behavior and I would say it is largely for the better.
However, one negative effect it has had on me is that I am less of an optimist. Code is very "cause and effect". This means a lot of my life is "no surprises" and "you get what you give"
So I often feel like the most likely outcome is probably just the one that's gonna happen. There are no surprises, no miracles. Life is cause and effect. -
Wow.. back from a two week holiday and feeling absolutely no drive to start work, no motivation to attack anything.

A few years back, I was a newly hired developer visiting the corporate HQ in NYC. We went to lunch, where the execs ordered a round of drinks.
I commented that drinking during the work day was an odd practice in my experience. The CEO jokingly explained how it made going home to his wife at the end of the day easier (or something to that effect). “You know what I mean?”
To which I reply (with no hint of irony): “No… My life loves me.”

A couple of days ago, an individual attempted to convince me that the National Security Agency is capable of cracking Rijndael encryption; as a response, I informed the individual of the infeasible nature of the factoring of extremely large semiprimes; however, my attempts were futile, as the individual believes that NSA possesses sufficient power to crack this encryption without intercepting the transmission of the corresponding private key.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is real; although this individual tends to be logically-minded, there does exist an exception to this good behaviour.

-
Man....I keep up with this strange love hate relationship I have with Python....
Last night it was python that literally wrote my homework: define all possible equivalent partition tables with cause and effect analysis and boundary value checks for a program. The whole thing wrote itself and all I had to do was verify the inputs. Something that I was able to do using jupyter with pandas and numpy. On one hand, I despise the lack of static typing and use of whitespace as a block delimiter. On the other I cannot but help feeling a high level of gratitude over the language and its high availability and ease of use for this.
Sure, I could have used other tools, but this language has dominated hardcore in this regard enough to the point of not considering it being a crime against humanity.3 -
Always get into a slight existential crisis during this time of winter.
Is my job worth all the trouble? Should I sell my house? Break up with my love? Start using a different programming language?
Probably has something to do with the psychological effect of this arbitrary point where we consider a year to end, and begin a new one.
I have no idea yet. I think my job is the first one to go, the rest is probably salvageable. -

So I'm struggling to finish this library which among other things is supposed to write flowing text. And this one's taking foreeeever and I'm hating it so much already.
I just keep daydreaming of starting a "simple" platformer. And then I go, "hm the parallax must be nice, it needs to have as many layers as possible, oh and look at this video, here they're even zooming and each layer rescales differently, good effect, I need to add that too. Also a plain platformer is just boring, it needs to have adventure elements, and even RPG too, yeah why not. Hm, it needs to have some motion blur, but oh I need this 1/48 shutter speed to make it look cinematic. Okay how do I go about adding this blur effect? What? Libgdx doesn't provide one out of the box? I need to use opengl shaders? A shader, eh... I'm not even sure what that is. Okay, let's see how to do it. Wow that's a total mess and resource hungry, and how will I calculate it all as to make it match the 1/48 thing?"
You know... Simple. And in the end, I'll abandon the library and won't get anywhere with the platformer (as usual).
Tsk tsk tsk5 -

I am in a ranting mood today.
I HATE "day in the life of a SWE" videos. Especially the ones where they work from home.
They basically show that they sleep/eat all day and get very little done. I know it's for entertainment or comedic effect but it makes me uneasy about the image that they are projecting to the world.
People already don't think we deserve the salary that we make and when they see these videos the idea gets re-enforced into their heads.
I've been working from home for 3 years and my day is NOTHING like what these content creators show in their videos. It's a bunch of meetings and a lot of coding with very little rest.2 -

Being addicted to Linux is a side effect of me not being able to get a faster computer when I was young.. Windows had a hard time on the machine I had.. Meanwhile Linux Desktop with compiz fusion ran like lightning with all those crazy effects.. If I had a faster computer I think I would've rather be addicted to AAA games.. Nowadays I can't use Windows because it's not as user friendly as things like Gnome.. Also it's not developer friendly compared to Linux Distros.. Simple things like changing the volume feels clunky in windows.. And the shitty windows explorer is the worst file manager of all the default ones in any OS.6

I open my computer screen on the devices while these devices cast their screen to my computer. Apparently the windows 10 anniversary update did "something" to my laptop today.
Keyboard stopped taking input at a random moment a few hours after the update. I shut it down, and it's stuck while shutting down. Pressing the power button has no effect, and the battery is non replaceable (except with a screwdriver and unplugging a cable, which I don't want to do while there is still power running through the system)
Guess I'll just leave it unplugged and hope for the battery to die.

I'm trying to build VoIP into my browser-based game, and holy shit are sound processing people bad at explaining stuff.
Every stackoverflow answer has badly named variables, noone names the algorithms they're using (which makes research near impossible), and literally every single Web Audio API pipeline I have seen so far contains at least one unexplained effect with no parameters, but it's a different effect each time.
One guy had implemented some kind of smoothing for catching up with the stream after interruptions (where the playback speed is proportional to how far we're behind the intended latency), without ever mentioning it anywhere. And this is meant to be a basic example!4 -
In my experience object oriented is very good for composing high level abstractions into a complete system. Functional is awesome for validation, parsing and massaging data in any way and imperative is tithe most useful paradigm to handle side effect dependent code that either manipulate the computers state ( read/write) or communicate with external systems.
The people acting as if one of them is the one true way are misleading you.3 -
We've recently employed a new lead dev that seems to have a problem in that his solution is always the correct solution.
On a typical day, whenever I push code up for review via pull request, every single ticket I work on, he has something that has to change which doubles the amount of time of each ticket.
I'd be fine with this if the other 2 developers also think he's a bit of a headache in terms of his opinion but a lot of the time, there is always.. ALWAYS something that has to change because his method is better than mine.
For example, just now I pushed up some code that literally just adds in the user's email to the view which is already in the store for that action/effect anyway. I added one line of HTML.
He comments saying that I need to change the way it gets the email by doing a different request in the effect, to get the current user id, and from that match it against the email address, and THEN display it in the view.
This ticket took me 5 minutes. He's making me make it 30-60 minutes (to understand his requirement and implement it).
Is this normal? Am I over reacting?
Opinions please!7 -
If the computer freezes during a drag-and-drop operation, you have to hold the mouse button and wait until it is unfrozen to avoid dropping the file in a wrong place.
Computer freezes can be unpredictable. For example, you might click on a location on screen that will have a different effect after the computer unfreezes because something moves or a window is opened/closed, or a keyboard press is not registered. For example, if you start dragging a file and then press CTRL during the freeze, it might not register the CTRL press and end up moving the file instead of copying it.10 -

Companies are laying workers off these days like it's nothing.
My company dismissed (just within my department) 90 out of 129 workers — that messed me up.
However, though, my team experienced just a partial effect: 2 Senior devs are needed out of 3 — mid and junior devs are going. I literally had to re-interview for my role again, since they need to keep only 2 senior engineers.
To cut the long story short, I was the first selected candidate — grateful I still have my job. But, I'm sad to see the disruption.

How the frick do you time a music game properly?
IN C#?
...Ok, maybe in C# it's just impossible, isn't it? Because I've done a metronome, it kinda works, but it's... wobbly... Because the thread stops every time the music effect is being played.
And also how do you make the notes...? ...I should design an entire editor for charts/maps, I guess, but how do I make that in C#?
So maybe I should try in Unity?
What do you think? I want to make a music game so bad ;–;8 -
Company sends email notifying us we'd need to register for two factor authentication because it would be mandatory for all access to email within a week. However, it had to get manager approval and had a side effect of giving us access to work from home (which my manager hates). So, we send the request to him, explain the situation, he denies it and says "that can't be right! Let's do this: if you do in fact lose access to email, then I'll approve it". Well, we did lose it, and just spent two days without any access to email and it was a huge pain to get the registration process done because one of its steps involved getting a validation code from the email.1

This is one of the coolest shader tutorials I have seen.
https://youtube.com/watch/...
It simply walks you through start to finish enhancing a weapon. I also found it can also be applied to 2D games as well. What I don't like is it is not setup to be generic. I will have to figure out how to make it be a weapon effect you can apply. I think having weapons provide a mask for where the shaders should be applied would make that possible. Then the generic effects can be applied to the weapons or removed. No need to have unique weapons of every type and for every effect.
This is the kind of tutorials that really get me going. When thinking of 2D I had not really thought about using shaders like this.4 -

I've heard a ton of negative opinion on PHP, which I've never used, so much that if what I've heard is true I wonder why anyone would use it. I asked on dev.to whether there are any real good design ideas going into PHP and got 5 responders. They were all to the effect of "PHP is great because PHP can make websites". I think that says something about the number of good design ideas going into PHP. I'm uncomfortable forming a strong opinion on a language I've never used, but I've never seen signs this bad.18

Background: I am currently working with a DB that has websocket functionality ("notify a client on insert/etc."). However, you do have to whitelist tables in order to use them with sockets.
I wanted to optimize my code and didn't want to mess with my coworkers dev-data, therefore I duplicated the table. After improving some small things I noticed that the interface does not change with new socket data. I have spent the last hour or so trying to figure out where I broke it.
I just realized that I forgot to whitelist that duplicated table 😐 Most relieving moment today 😅
Bonus side effect: The code is much cleaner now since I refactored a lot of the realtime-logic in order to understand it/fix the bug.3 -

There are a lot more - Scott Hanselman, Martin Fowler, Andrew Koenig, Andrei Alexandrescu, Barabara Moo and many more.
They remind me of why I chose programming. It wasn't for money or fame, just to solve puzzles in cool ways. It's the way you can take a simple concept and apply it to great effect that brings me joy and these people do it relentlessly.4 -
I feel like some developers focus too much on concepts like clean code, software craftsmanship, TDD and so forth, to a point where they almost forget end user needs (ease of use, intuitive experiences, general UX principles).
Don’t get me wrong. I do my best to stick to a decent standard of quality and maintainability. However my solutions are adapted to the specific needs that are being addressed rather than the other way around.
I’ve heard some devs say things to the effect of ”well I know that’s not most intuitive behavior for the user but it’s the cleaner way to do it, so the user will just have to figure it out“. So in essence they’re just coding for their own pleasure rather than addressing user needs4 -

Ok so I have never really used motors before so I have no idea what I am doing, but I was wondering how to calculate how much weight a motor could move.
Say I have a trolley that weights ~300kg, and I attached a motor to each of its 4 wheels how would I calculate if it would move/what would be needed to move it, and how would I know the RPM of the motors. (Friction can be ignored and it would be on a flat surface)
Also, if I added 4 more motors to turn the wheels, since its just moving a small wheel and it wont be supporting the weight, could it be weaker than the other motors, or would the force that the wheel is experiencing from the trolleys weight effect the turning of the motor.1 -

The gnome-screenshot tool has a white flashing effect. Every single pixel of the screen is at the brightest colour for the fraction of a second.
Did the developers of gnome-screenshot really think users want a camera flash in their face whenever they hit the "print screen" button?
That flashing effect hurts users' eyes, especially if a white flash appears on a dark-theme user interface.
Formerly, gnome-screenshot had a short black-out, which was tolerable. Thankfully, mate-screenshot has no shutter effect at all. These flashing effects are not helpful in the slightest, just purely annoying.9 -

Should i push some common sense to some people in the company ????
Both our QA, customer QA, our project manager and their project manager agreed to set a timeout of 400 ms after press interaction to buttons, images or list items, just to show the ripple and fade effects to the user.
I am implementing it, and the application obviously has become much sluggish. They will blame me when they actually see this, because 75 or 100 ms is pretty enough to show any effect and make the app fast enough.
They will want me to change it afterwards, i am completely sure. I wish i was there to emit some common sense to those homo not sapiens.3 -

After two days of trying to explain to them the concept of "Dirty Reads" and the practical imposibility to avoid Sch-S locks, they finally gave up.
The best part was when they asked in a quite condescending way "this is funny, why do you think that nolocks causes dirty reads?" and I sent them a link to the MSDN page about nolock that cleary states "Specifies that dirty reads are allowed.". -
Anti-features need to be fought with fire (metaphorically speaking).
This means they must be eliminated, not just made optional.
Why? Because an optional anti-feature is just one step away from a mandatory anti-feature.
For example, "secure" booting: https://youtu.be/vvaWrmS3Vg4?t=750 (Jody Bruchon)
Another example are disguised remote kill switches, such as add-on signing ( https://digdeeper.club/articles/... ). It started as optional and people were able to opt out, and everyone accepted it because no one expected what would come next.
All that was left was removing the ability to opt out, and then Mozilla has control over which extensions users are allowed to use.
For years, this feature sat dormant and users did not know of its existence. But in early May 2019, the metaphorical thread snapped and an expired certificate remotely disabled all extensions, wasting millions of man-hours of productivity.
From the digdeeper.club article:
"The funny thing is, the whole point of the extension prison was allegedly to increase security - and yet today, all security addons got disabled because of it! Shows how freedom always has to trump over security or it ends up in a disaster like this."

As a developer I never understood the intended benefit of standups. Issues + a scrum/kanban board like trello or GitHub project + a chat for quick questions or to schedule an ad-hoc pair programming session should be enough to make everyone know everything they need to know about the project status at any time.
Obliging developers to talk in a group session to reiterate in a more verbose way what they already wrote down when working on it, will make a lot of people uncomfortable. Talking too much or not complying to the talking rules is an expected side effect besides anxiety and reduced productivity.
If you want a talk show, hire talk masters.
If you want software development, hire software developers.
Don't confuse one with the other!10 -
Something of an ongoing thing, but the past few days in particular my hands and wrists have been demanding I stop what I'm doing every minute or so to flex, stretch, and otherwise strain just about every joint in them. Not sure how to describe it other than that they find not doing so *extremely* irritating. Probably the accumulated effect of spending the last 10 years almost continuously at a keyboard of some sort.
Anyone else experience this and have any suggestions on how they deal with it? It sometimes disappears once I really get into the flow of what I'm doing, but it's making it much harder getting to that point in the first place...2 -

Iconless menus – another effect of the toxic minimalism trend. Icons in menus such as the mobile web browser and device settings help finding items faster!

Sometimes knowing how to program has this weird effect where you pick apart all tech that has some cross over into your field. I rarely visit a website without seeing something that makes me think, “who the hell thought that was a good idea”.
Lately though, as I learn more about the management side of things, I can see many more reasons that stupid things end up in good products. Lack of time and trying to over-engineering to cater for some odd edge case being the 2 biggest killers.
In 2018 I’m going to be a bit nicer about silly technical mistakes.2 -

Been working frontend on a very large ASP.Net Core project with React. The company is a multi national oil company. I asked for some documentation on their React components, like where is the props, why is this component showing this side-effect and is there a component for X and Y so that you won't have to pay me in order to dig around in the codebase? They told me they will document the frontend when the project is finished (whenever that may be?)
So basically, there won't ever be any documentation then.3 -

Every day in our standup bullshit, we have a few of our offshore team join via Skype. It always fucks up somehow, bad connection, quiet volume or dropped connections, all of which are quite hilarious but today a new benchmark was set.
We (the humans physically there) all did our standup, then it was over to the offshore team.
A voice came out of the speakers which sounded like someone had applied an effect to a spoken mp3 which slowed it down to about 10% speed. It was deep AF and slow AF and I couldn't speak properly after it for approximately 40 minutes 😂

Okay so theres something stopping me from understanding how Object Oriented Programming works. im sorry ahead of time this will get messy..
SO in this case we will use python. well what if the object has more than two functions? like the __init__, func1, then func2 and func2 does something else but doesn't get called or would you have to call of of them like class.func1(), class.func2().
I just don't understand when it comes to how the functions interact or effect each other. and how they would work when you dont call that specific function. I see the use of oop i just cant wrap my head around certain things..15 -

Why people so dumb to be dumb as a rock and have pet rocks?
Yet people have computers which basically have a math rock that runs the system. People think computers are smart so they defer to things like online data and ai systems. As if the computer somehow "knows" better. The R2D2 effect. Fancy magic 8 balls.
Society is dumber than a rock. Seems to be getting dumber too. The irony is that people who had pet rocks also went outside and touched grass.4 -

I just had a thought about what may set good and not so good developers apart...
I'm now 30 and for the past 3-4 years, I haven't done any more big personal projects. But at work, going on and on about good coding practices and making sure things are done right, more time spent upfront on design than coding, etc. And doing the greenfield stuff.
And I feel like maybe there biggest difference is that I started to code as a kid... And making those mistakes early and learning all the different things have a compounding effect.
So if we all become slower and even stagnant at 30 in picking stuff up... I'm always going to have this advantage/lead (skill/experience gap)
Or maybe in just rambling and getting nowhere.... -

Did an interesting experiment a few days ago, I counted the lines of code in my dissertation project. My project consists of a cloud hosted web service which allows video streaming, search and upload, as well as an iOS frontend which allows users to record their own video and upload it. The entire project spans about 2,400 lines of code. Then I looked in my work iOS project and saw a JavaScript file for manipulating form elements which spans about 2,100 lines of code. The whole project is about 100,000 lines of code and doesnt do anything special, it just calls a web API and saves/displays results mainly.

I'm having problems understanding ngrx (or simply rxjs...), once again.
I have a feature state called "World".
This state has three Actions: Init, InitSuccess and InitFailure.
Also I have other isolated feature states like "Mountains", "Streets", "Rivers".
They have actions like this and corresponding effects to fetch data: Load, LoadSuccess, LoadFailure.
Now I would like to add an effect to WorldActions.Init, which will dispatch Mountains.Load, Streets.Load, Rivers.Load one after another. So ideally an action log would look like this:
1. World.Init
2. Mountains.Load
3. Streets.Load
4. Rivers.Load
5. Mountains.LoadSuccess
6. Streets.LoadSuccess
7. Rivers.LoadSuccess
8. World.InitSuccess
Or when an error occurs:
1. World.Init
2. Mountains.Load
3. Mountains.LoadFailure
4. World.InitFailure
How could an effect pipeline for that look?
How can I dispatch World.InitSuccess only after all LoadSuccess-Actions have happened?
Or am I still trying to implement ngrx in a wrong/bad way?
PS: The reason I am putting everything into separate feature states is because "Mountains" etc. are standalone features on their own. Only in the context of a "World" they belong together. For this reason I can't create a monstrous effect "World.Load", without producing redundant code.10 -
Hi @dfox I saw an android user report this bug recently as a rant, and now I'm seeing it in iOS (latest app and os version).
Scrolling to the bottom, no more rants load. The little message shows stating that more rants are loading, but when you keep trying to scroll down there are none.
When I change the sort order from Algo to Recent or Top, I can't reproduce the issue. Seems to be only Algo.
Have tried killing the app and restarting to no effect. I hadn't noticed this bug last week interestingly, but can't confirm whether that's just coz I didn't scroll enough.2 -

The documentation of the script I'm using says "Lastly the program will calculate the total reprojection error. The closer this value is to zero the better. I usually like values under 0.1. Play around with the calibration, see what works and what improves it."

The latest news report makes my stomach turn. South Africa moves this month from a level 4 to a level 3 lockdown. No more curfew.. still no traveling or renting accommodation for leisure though. Ban on public gatherings, gyms, dine-in restaurants, tobacco sales remains in effect. Websites that use a snow effect in Winter, with many little snowflakes moving on screen, needlessly drain the battery of mobile devices. Since batteries in portable electronics are usually not replaceable as of 2022, it also shortens the overall useful life of mobile devices.
If web designers feel the need to appear creative, which the snowflake effect isn't since it apparently existed since the 2000s, they should at least give users an option to turn it off. And that option should be available without logging in. Perhaps this useless effect should be turned off by default for mobile users.8 -

The whole corona thing has one really interesting side effect to me..
As a person who lost the hope in humanity, I see how some people react to this. They are young and healthy, not really in danger but they actually stop going to gatherings, pubs and cinemas because they don’t wanna endanger the elders and people with preconditions. They actually write shops that they should put the elders first and stuff like that.
It’s great to see that they care about others.
On the other hand there are people publishing fake news and make people believe that their medications make them more vulnerable to the virus just for fun..
I expected the later one and it doesn’t surprise me.
But the first one, that people hold back to protect others, that’s great to see.1 -
So I have been migrating my website from AngularJS to Vue as an experiment. I'm late to the party.
It has a navicon that opens a dock, a bar that drops down when you scroll, and some insane particle effect that is first drawn to a canvas and then pushed into a div's background image in real time. Seems nesting Vue instances isn't an option, so I made it into a component.
After two days I finally got it working... and it spazzes the hell out. It's literally the exact same code, but now the canvas starts to flicker like crazy the moment you scroll the page.
Not only have I been doing really filthy stuff like 'var self = this', I have no idea where even to begin debugging this nonsense.4 -
