"Can you put my site as the first result on google?"
I can add SEO to your site, just give me your preferred keywords, a description, and let's make sure we follow white hat best practices etc.
"No call someone at google and ask how much to go to the top of the list"
So you want to pay for ads or..?
"No get a figure I can pay to get to first page"
"Or can you just edit the google"
... And so I never renewed that contract ever again, the end.12 -
First day at new job, let's go and see how this is going to go! I'll finally be able to call myself a professional linuxer 🙌😄17
-
Just had to use Google maps for the first time in ages because nothing else was working.
It displayed a bus stop at a wrong location. I just fucking missed my bus.
Thanks for nothing, Google, go fuck yourself.14 -
Fucking hell. If I like your bloody app, I'll go rate it myself you fucktwaddle. Don't ask me to rate it just after I've opened it for the first time.7

trying to teach my little sister(13) her first programming language. decided to go the microsoft way and start with C#.

That akward moment when your App finally takes down Pokemon Go down from the first place to second in AppStore but you can not be Happy about it 😑. Katwarn warned the users about the incidents of munich #prayformunich. Good to know people still care about the important things. 🙁3

You guys ever spent a longer period of time on finding a bug and once you found it, first go grab a coffee/snack to allow that bug some final moments?
Like some sick kind of power play along the lines of “I will fix you at a time and location of my choosing”6 -

Okay: "ハローリーダー" - "¿Qué?"
Seriously? "Hola lector RFID" - "Что?"

"Hello RFID Reader" - "Hello"

It's been a long day and the brain is obviously the first thing to go to sleep... even when you're still awake.2 -
The sooner you start coding, the longer it will take.
This was meant as a way to tell us all the slow down and plan first. If you go right into coding things before the structure is thought out you will end up with garbage code.4 -
How the fuck does these testers find these bugs
there are like
- go to this
- click on this
- type the first 57 digits of pi
- sacrifice your first born to the devil
-> there the table is misaligned by 13 pixels, fix that7 -
Almost got my manhood out at work.
There I was in deep thought needing the toilet but wanted to get a coffee first. So I get up go to the kitchen and catch myself next to the bin unzipping.3 -
So we hired a junior engineer. 1 year of experience, this is his second job.
First task: Send some data to a web service using its REST API. Let me know when you've finished.
Two hours later I go to check on him.
- "I'm trying to decode this weird format the server uses"
He was writing a JSON parser in Python from scratch.

I ran out of instant noodles and had to go out to buy some, and literally the first thought that came to my mind was "Why the fuck is the sun so bright"
No, seriously, why does it feel so bright1 -
College Graduate joins the team, assigned the first jira story.
Perfect logic, variable naming can be improved, but I can let that go, since the logic was good.

Friday 6pm to Sunday 6pm, with toilet breaks, snack breaks and a three hour nap on Sunday morning. Roughly 44 hours. It was a hackathon, Nov 2016. My team came in fourth place and the first three teams went to Germany!
Well, I got a well paying attachment from it so it didn't go all to waste.
Me and my laptop then... -
Get really motivated to make something at 1am.
Pulls out laptop, earphones go in.
Types first line of code, girlfriend wakes up, complains about the lowest screen brightness with dark theme being too bright.

A physicist, a mathematician, and a statistician go hunting. They spot a deer, and take aim. The physicist shoots first and misses 10 meters to the right. The mathematician shoots next and misses 10 meters to the left. The statistician then throws down his gun and proclaims, “we got it!”1

Almost ever day I am the first one at office in the early morning. Other devs arrive at least one or two hours later. I don't mind. I just want to have a bit of sun left, when I go.
But why the heck...everytime I go, one of those other fucktards (which I normally really like), mumbles something like "you go this early today?"
Yes I do you dipshit!! You could arrive earlier, too!
And then, those late birds get credit for staying longest!!!
I mean, sure... If you start to work at 11pm, you have to stay long...
Meeeeh7 -
I love group projects.
There is no greater feeling than, after you set up the repository with the first code files, your team mate changes the indentation and commenting style in every file to his own style without even discussing the general coding style rules in the group first.
Fucking awesome start.
Go eat a sack of unwashed hobo balls you filthy cunt.3 -
Woooooooo!
Just finished my first fully automated CI/CD system. Now all my commits go through the pipeline and gets deployed to live automatically.
It's a small project but still, it's really cool!10 -
I have been awake for 21 hours and couldn’t sleep last night, because of long vacation and my bed time is messed up. This is my first day working after training and I got 9~10 hours to go
P.S. coffee doesn’t help4 -
My first year at the Uni I believed I was "superior" to others as I knew Python and they knew C.
I'd give my kidney to someone who can go back in time and bang some sense into my empty skull.9 -
I always find it more productive to have at least two ongoing projects at once.
That way, if I get stuck on a bug/frustrated with the first project, I focus on the second and more often than not, when I go back to the first project I realize that I had made a dumb mistake and keep going.2 -
My non-programming project: the first 10.000 decimals of pi, in small wood sticks. 9.974 to go ...3

Netflix, why is your loading spinner so horrible!
Do you know what a percentage is??? 99% means you are ALMOST done. Just a tiny fraction to go. I should not see 99% for seconds or even minutes on end. Much less after the first 98% took only a couple seconds!!

Why the fuck do people go to so much trouble to justify what they did instead of just admitting they were wrong?
The way I handle this type of people is to first ask a straightforward like "X implies Y, right?" If they answer "yes" I say "then this here isn't right" and watch them go around the world to find a justification for it not being wrong.6 -
Anyone else having connection problems after the recent Windows 10 update? We've been slammed at work with them. If you do, here's an easy fix:
0. Go to Command Prompt (Run as Administrator)
1. First command:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
(One of them will probably fail, that's fine.)
2. Second command:
netsh winsock reset
3. Restart the computer.13 -

First day of our hike complete. We met a reindeer, got covered by a huge cloud, and finally had the sky open up to cover us in rain as well. Not too eventful, thankfully. Time for a well earned shower.11 -
This has been a great year for me programing wise. Learned Go, got my first job working in it.

Someone here on devrant that used to go under the name LetMeCode ranted about php and said how much they'd rather work with the Phoenixframework.
Love on first sight. Studied Elixir to get a job as an elixir dev and got my first and current job right after graduating high school.
So yeah, that rant might have changed my life. Saved me from becoming a java or php dev for sure!4 -

A few days ago I had an interview, they asked me if I knew Angular. I told them I never used it, and they told me to give it a go anyway. I made what they asked me to do in 8 hours and submitted it for review. Today they called and said they liked it, and asked me to go there tomorrow to talk terms.
Well, tomorrow could be my first day as an Angular developer!3 -

Writing a brainfuck interpreter is a lot fun: Mine does recursion within loops. I also added functions: strings, you can cheat. Stackdump(!), Exit script(*) , go to first cell (^), go to last cell(?), nulling cell (0) It parses this for example: "retoor" ^[.>]. It will dump string retoor. Explanation: the string moves ptr to sixth place. ^ will reset pointer to first. [] is a loop that executes as long there's data in current cell. The "." prints char of current cell (Number if not alpha etc). ">" moves a cell to right. [.>] will thus print until it moved to an empty cell. To move to first, I could've also used my repeater function by adding times to repeat after command: <6 moves six places to left. .>.>.>.>.>.> is also a way to print six chars. +[,.] works as the Linux program "cat". , is one char keyboard input.

What’s the most nonsensical habit that your non-tech-savvy friends or family have with computers or electronic devices?
Here’s mine: when my parents first got iPhones, they were deathly afraid of going over their data plan limit, so they would go into Settings and turn cellular data off whenever they weren’t actively using the phone...8 -
Didn't know about using php includes for headers and footers when I coded my first big site. Now having to go back through and add it in page by page so I can roll out updates more easily down the line. Bleeeuuggghhh1

I'm a junior dev less than 1 year into my first job out of college. I'm halfway done reading Clean Code (my first software book out of college) and I'm really enjoying it!
What should I read next? I was thinking something about design patterns. Should I go for the classic GoF book or continue with Robert C Martin and read "Agile Software Development, Principles, Patterns, and Practices"?9 -

Also don't follow the programming language band wagon. Focus and master the basics first HTML, CSS, Jquery. These aren't going anywhere and a SOLID understanding of JavaScript will go WAY further then you think4 -

Couldn't save a file because it showed me that this file is opened somewhere else. So I go to the resource monitor to check for its handlers, but only explorer.exe showed in list. I restart explorer and get back to the code. For the first time..... for the first time in my life I hoped that this won't work. I press Ctrl+S, andddd, file was saved.
So, basically, windows's explorer can lock files. Nice job Microsoft. Nice job. -
Halloween reminds me of when I started my first tech job. It was a week before Halloween. I arrive for my first day. The front door that’s normally locked is wide open. It’s quiet. There’s caution tape everywhere. I think, “oh no, what happened?!” I debate whether I go inside or go to the lobby and ask security if they’re aware of a possible crime scene upstairs. I cautiously step inside and…everything is business as usual. It was all part of their Halloween decorations. I can laugh about it now, but I had quite a scare. 🎃

My mentor always told me to tackle 1 problem at a time. “Go get the basic scenarios first then we can decide/derive what happens on complex scenarios.”
This shit helped me through my 4+ years in the company. Now that I’m a mentor myself I’ll make sure the legacy continues. -

Some weeks back I mentioned (in a comment) my small program capable of editing the tags in audio files based on the filename.
Today, I had some spear time and implemented it in Go (the original version was Ruby).
For people that are interested, here is a link to the repo: https://github.com/SirWindfield/...
Any help/feedback is appreciated!
I promised someone to mention him if I get to publish it. But I forgot his user name :(9 -
Thanks, AfterShip.com, for working flawlessly while the system I was building was in dev/test mode and for the first few days in live mode, then completely crapping the bed the first day I needed you to work with real tracking data with the live system. Fuck I am to stupid to set up an ubuntu.
I just installed ubuntu as a dual boot on my notebook.

First year of college. We had to write a program in assembly to let lights go on and off slowly but I couldn't get it to work and googled the shit out of it trying to get it to work to no avail. So I go to the teacher as I expected him to have a bit more documentation/knowledge on how the shit worked. He literally said oh let me google that for you. Which made me go 🤦♂️. In the end I never figured out how to get the lights on or off but luckily my team mates did a good enough job to get us passed in the class.4

When starting a new project full of challenges, do not go to your technicians right away; go to your artists first - they will know what to do. Then go to your engineers - because they will figure out how to do it.4

First time posting. But I need an advice, I want to learn a programming language to get a better job. I have just the basics of C#, should I keep going with C# or go with F#? I heard a lot of good thing about F#. Thanks. You guys are awesome!6

So I got my first Dev job as a Junior!!!! It is in a big company that seems to be full of energy and ideas.
I am really excited and hope this all go well.
I'm just lost about how to be prepared for the first day and afraid to not meet the expectations I think they have on me.2 -
Dude. Listen.
The deployment didn't go 100% well, fine. The main menu got fucked up, fine.
But no one gives a fuck when you send an 15 words long email to 6 persons just whining about the fact that no delivery go well on the first try.
Learn to shut the fuck up sometimes. -
Ah yes i also love not having a meeting before our first sprint because 'there is nothing to talk about yet'. I see absolutely no way this could ever go wrong.1

As some of you may have read, I'm working on an terminal based passwords manager, written in Go and i just published its first usable version.
Its my first ever open-source project, and I'm so damn happy to finally have something to show the world.
Its still lacks many features and has quite many bugs, but I'm looking forward to work on it in the next few weeks.

I'm getting started with Go (so cool so far!) and I'm trying to interact with Tumblr API using their Go Client...
Every time I google something about it I got the growing feeling that I am the first person who uses that client LOOOL2 -
the only thing that lets me go on is trying to squeeze some form of even minor happiness out of each day because comfort surely isn't present right now
I'm living in the first world sliding into the third world.10 -
Just attended my first conference and it was awesome! So many new ideas, but also tired and overloaded. Can't decide if I should code tonight, go to bed early, or just do something mindless.1

Hey guys! So I need advice/strategy’s on how to let someone go in your life. It all started when I became friends with this person through other mutual friends, at first I didn’t even think twice about him. But now we started talking more and I realize he’s funny and nice, however, he does do some pretty bad things I don’t agree with. And whenever we are in public he ignores me and goes off with my other friends, how do I stop stressing about this. I really just want to let go of this person and move on, go back to not even thinking twice about him. I need help on how to do this, thank you so much for your time and advice.5

This is first month Kotlin has entered Tiobe top 50 languages (at position 41) ❤️surpassing Clojure, Rust and others.
Way to go Kotlin.1 -
I wish I were a super hero who's special powers were development related. Like being able to change a person's pointer to point to null or being able to cast a Queue as a Stack so I can go first.

I'm gonna be installing Arch for the first time, and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations.
I'm mainly interested which filesystem and system (aka systemd) thingy should I go with. But fell free to leave any other suggestions.15 -

Announcing Covey (v0.1)!
A lightweight (or at least that's the goal) Linux cluster orchestration/management system.
https://github.com/chabad360/covey
Why?
Because there are no systems with a (web) GUI (that I could find) that can run on a Raspberry Pi or similar.
This doesn't have a GUI!
It's coming in the next week or so (hopefully).
The codebase is shit!
I know, I'm actively refactoring it (feel free to send a PR).
What is it written in?
Go, with Postgres as the database.
Can I use it?
Go ahead and try, it's currently more in the MVP stage then at the stage where I recommend you use it.
Do you know what you're doing?
Maybe... This is my first big project in Go, and the first time I've ever used SQL. So I'm learning as I go along.9 -
Personal favorite quotes from my cubemate...

- trickle-down badge-o-nomics: when I have to ask someone else to lend me their badge because someone else borrowed mine
- Haskell users can kick a motherfunctor right in the monads
- You can't put monads in Go because they try to prefix everything with go-
- Always use live rounds when troubleshooting -- never blanks
- Equifax's Apache wasn't patchy enough
- I saw the last episode of the first season of The Last Kingdom
- You gnow it's good cause it's GNU1 -

Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now. -
Better ideas:
I love building stuff and when i have something that I'm really into, it's hard to concentrate on the boring stuff i need to finish first.
Sometimes i just need to do what i feel like doing, doesn't matter. No, i won't go to bed, no i can't do the other stuff, i need to do that!1 -
So I wrote my first blog since July, so go check it out or whatever.

Just had a very productive night with @hahaha1234 and @jappe. Revisited a lot of code, made it simpler, faster, storage efficient and future proof. Our smart search engine is getting somewhere now. Tomorow we will be continue building ofcourse, but first: time to sleep! It is 3:45AM and after that, go running on the beach in Zandvoort.1 -
Go to compare two technologies. Ask google.
What do I get?
saashub
stackshare.io
slant.co/
g2.com/compare
Fuckign comparison sites, first 4-5 results, practically the whole damn first page.
And all their 'comparisons' are autogenerated masturbation or something keyed in by interns at yet another worth-fuck-all tech startup.
Googles search engine is fucking garbage too.
This is Advertising taken to the level of mental pollution.
Fucking assholes.6 -

Yay my first day back and I'm 1 hour and 15 minutes late because the main road I take into work was a parking lot. And then I have to go directly into the world's longest meeting. And I have a peer review to do so I guess no dev soon for me today.

Boss complains this morning about having to go to a Cubs game, and even calls it a "First world problem." (outing with management and client).
We're super behind on a lot of things, most of us are busy coding, and he sends us a photo from the game to our Slack channel.2 -
This is the first company I've been at without annual performance reviews. Employees are supposed to go to their manager when they feel they deserve a pay increase and start and undocumented process of writing up their contributions for the year. No standard cost of living increases.7

How to create an application using kivy.
- Install Kivy
- Open PyCharm and create your first application
- Follow the documentation
- Try to start the application
- The application crash for a arg that the run() method doesn't require
- Go to google to find the solution
- Don't find any solution
This is what I have done in the last 3 hours
Thanks Kivy3 -

Best: Public docs, especially quick start guides... That actually work.
Worst: my team's. It's basically non-existent... I'm the only one that writes docs and design diagrams and well that's mostly for myself to remember/understand stuff and use when ppl ask....
My first response is usually like: "Here RTFM... (Now go away because I have other things to do)" -

Read about first Android Go device launch will happen lately this month.
Read about restrictions for Android Go section in Google Play.
" - RAM usage less than 50Mb"
With removed Google Maps (they decided to replace with something lighter later) and without stripping functionality app barely fits 64Mb.
With Google Maps it takes 150-200Mb.
Gave up.
Today found Google Maps Go apk.
It's fucking PWA wrapped in apk.
Fucking awesome.
Poll: Go in Android Go stands for...
- Go fuck yourself
- Go learning web development
- Go writing 100 shitapps per second, all with one button -
Favourite year as a dev? The first year. It was still so new and interesting to me yet to be soiled by money, deadlines, managers, waking up early, commuting, coworkers etc... Ah to be able to go back to those days.

I'm intrigued, what are you all trying to learn in your spare time and how?
I'll go first, brushing up on maths by reading K A Stroud advanced engineering mathematics.
He's got an intro level book that's also very good.5 -
What should I learn first, Python or Rust?
All I know currenrlly is JS, and I want to get away from the browsers. And I'm a Linux guy, so Python or Rust seem's like the way to go :-)9 -
Maybe some of you will find this useful.

I was just thinking about this.
How old was everyone when they first go into IT? Something along the lines of when you wrote your first program or script, or when you first started a programming course, etc. And what was the reason?
I was 22. First proper start was through an Intro to Information Technology course as part of my current degree. I was working a dead-end, depressing callcentre job. I was thinking what my life was going to be like, so I made a concious decision to start my degree and make something of myself. It's, of course, a bit more detailed but I am more interested in what others have to share.15 -
My first internship was at a small startup in Belgium, we were 5 including me. Most of the time, we would all go to my boss's house for dinner and play rocket league then go back to work.

A few questions from a highschool student looking to go into a programming job post-secondary.
Did you go to college, university or jump right into it? Any regrets?
How did you get your first job?
I'm a little paranoid because while I'm great with programming and math (high 90 average) I am horrible with classes that require taking apart stories like English or history.4 -
Any recommended reading material for someone deploying a go web application for the first time?
I am trying to see if I can deploy a go app into one of my institution's test linux servers. I would have one of the technicians create the server, so It doesn't really matter what it is, but lets say for argument's sake that the servers in question are either an ubuntu server or a red hat/centos server. Any recommendations before I dive in?6 -
When you are at a crossroads, what helped you to decide?
I have two great job offers, and though my gut feeling is telling me to go one way due to tech stack and first communications, the other opportunity is (slightly) better paid and the company is much larger and nationwide active.3 -
heck yea, started my first real React Native project. It's called R8 I stole the idea from @n3xus because in lazy and have nothing else to do. If you wanna check out my progress or fix my anything I can't fucking do, go to my GitHub, retrax24.2

First go through any getting started guides or introductory tutorials. Then depending on comfort level and available time, either start exploring further on your own or search for more advanced tutorials.
Try to make use of what you learned, either at work or in hobby projects or small proof of concept programs, as the case may be. -
Received insider information about my magazine. Two possible things cab happen tomorrow:
- I wake up tomorrow and we go through our first meeting of the year (general meeting happen three times a year) and everything is fine
- I wake up tomorrow as the new editor for my section but at the cost of my closest friend leaving the magazine.2 -

Lisp is such a cool language, and I feel like because functional programming is becoming so popular, Lisp could end up the go-to language because it's so versatile and, though there are many parens, it's friendlier at first glance than Haskell. (And there are so many libraries for it, omg)6

Change my mind. Golang can be more difficult than it needs to be sometimes:
Find the first "non-null" value in an array:
Go:

() -> third() )
.map( x -> x.get() )
.filter( s -> s != null)
.findFirst();

Do the design first and make sure you get it reviewed!! If the reviewer is always too busy to look at your design, remind them that you can't start the actual coding until they do the review and go over it with you. And be open to their suggestions, it may save time later down the line.

Well, what should I say. I don't know if it happens to anyone here. But I recently made a backend in Go. I am not an experienced programmer either and I had to complete my main project in Node.js first. I was short on time too.
But me being a great lad, thought: let's do the server side in go. So, started learning go and then web programming in go. And well, didn't complete the project in time.
Lost the guy who hired me. I am a freelancer btw. Although my thirst for learning was gone. I have faced this problem many times. The desire to learn new stuffs instead of trying perfect what I already know.1 -

If you're working on a project don't be concerend too much if it's made perfect.
Make a working example first and then go refactoring and improving functionality.
If you want something to be perfefct from the start, you will never finish it. -
Cherry picked my first commit today, am proud.
Luckily I'd done all the work for a develop MR in 1 commit and could just cherry pick the 1 commit into master.
Not sure how I'll go with a commit range lol -
Does anyone else have problems with devRant? Whenever I exit a rant and go back to the 'main window', where the rants are supposed to be listed, I get an empty page (with the typical devRant background but without the loading animation). Rants won't load for me then.
Rants won't load for me except for the first time when I open the app. After I clicked on a rant and go back, it won't load.
Using a OnePlus 3 with Android 7.1.1, in case that matters. :)6 -
👋 to all my fellows working on saturday.
Let's spill out the real reasons. I will go first :
Working because my manager wants to justify the salary. He wants the team to work more before going to december holidays. Although this one day doesn't make any difference 😑 😑😑😑😑😑😑6 -
Which one comes first? vulnerability or threat? 🤔🤔 I would go with vulnerability how about you guys?5

Go is the first language with it's own dedicated hate page. Just go to golang.sucks
The anti-awesome github backing the website is also something I've never seen before.
Is GoLang really just a hype and a language created of retarted developers at Google ?2 -
Whenever you're stuck with a problem, Google it and open the first five search results in different tabs and then go through each. You learn a lot more than just the solution to your problem that way. =)

I go to YouTube and I get recommended the same selection of videos almost everytime.
I made a joke about being a virgin on 9GAG, after that the first video recommended to me on YT is "Master of Virginity" by penguinz0 (MoistCritikal).
Is that how being spied on like ?1 -
Alright sure this quarintine time would go with no issues... Right?

*Waits 30 seconds*
*Page loads without the logo*
*Searches about a problem I have*
*Wait another 60 seconds*
*Page loads with no results*

*Now there are links*
*Clicks on the first link*
*ERR_TIMEOUT*

Data test generator tool?
I'm on my first work with a development that will go to production, and I'd like to test performance, UI and all of that with random generated data. I know about dbSchema but it's trial pulls me back -
Should I implement the application first or plan about cloud hosting first?
Do I even go ahead with cloud hosting in the starting?5 -
First I thought I finally found some public WiFi which isn't unencrypted (Password was on a sign outside).
*Opens WiFi settings*
*WiFi is unencrypted*
Huh? *Connects*
*Sign in page opens up which asks for the password*
Well... VPN is the way to go...9 -
When ever I start working on a project of some kind I usually find myself cursing the code, cursing myself and asking why I couldn't just go into something easier. But without fail, every single time I get the project working for the first time, I have a massive grin on my face and feel like a child at an amusement park for the first time. All the bad feelings I had towards the code dissolves and makes me excited to keep moving forward.1

Learning Tip:
While learning some new tool/technology never just go and start looking at the handbooks and/or tutorials. Always set small goals for yourself first or ask someone proficient in that tool/technology set these goals for you so you can follow along and make real progress while learning. -
I'm about to build a webshop for a customer with about 5000 products.
I'll also maintain the site after it's finished.
Is magento 2 the best choice or what should i go with? Fire away :)

My life has changed forever. I can't go back!2 -
I think I'm supposed to start this with some kind of no rant tag, but I've never been good at following the rules. I just watched the first episode of the third season of Rick and Morty. Best ep I've watched yet!
That is all, go write some awesome code.2 -
I always have a tough time waking up and getting going I. The morning - today my first thought was “I have to run the go function.”
What is wrong with me. Also, why don’t humans have a go function. -
Altera Quartus II. Fuck it. Fuck its licensing, its installation script, and its humongous size!!!
Seriously! It's almost impossible to install it properly on Linux in one go! 😠
And "Aborted. The application will now exit". Well, thank you my good man, for the fucking helpful error message!!! Go screw yourself!
Also, first post ^^ -
Going to my first front-end meetup right now. Probably won't understand a thing from lectures, drink a beer, utter not a single word to anyone and go home. Wish me luck!
