Meeting with client.
Me: our solution does not require a central server, any computer (windows, Mac or Linux) on which you install our software can act both as a client and a server
Client: no we need to have all our data on our server
Me: sure, you can install our software on any computer
Client: no, we need it on our server
Me: ok then, we can make the needed changes to install our software on your server, it will cost an additional fee though
Client: very good then17 -
On the last working day of our CEO.
CEO: As a software company, if we are to build an airplane would you ride on the airplane that we built?
Everyone was silent.
Me at the back of my head: I'll ride. I know for sure that the airplane will never start.9 -
My boss is a bit annoyed that I’m listening to the music in my headphones during work.
“Are you sure it doesn’t make you lose the focus?”

Sales Guy: Hey Man, you know what? you should go back to college and advance your knowledge in Software Engineering. This way you will be an expert in programming and handling the Servers.
Me: I started programming at the age of 17 and started handling servers by the age of 18. Can I ask you something if you don't mind?
Sale Guy: Yea sure I don't mind anything
Me: Get the fuck out of here8 -
Hey everyone,
We’ll be doing maintenance on our web server on Sunday, April 29 at around 3pm EDT. The app will probably be unreachable for about 10-15 minutes over that time. We apologize for the inconvenience and we’ll be sure to get it back up as quickly as possible.
Feel free to let me know if you have questions.30 -

Pm: Can you make a prototype in 3 weeks?
Me: Sure, but just for the sake of demoing something to the customer. It will take more time for production ready code.

PM (to customer): We can sign you up today and you can use it tomorrow.

Boss: No, just need to talk.

Neighbor: Hey! You know how to make websites right?
I: ya! Look at some of my work.
Neighbor: Nice! Will you make one for this concert i am hosting?
I: ya sure! It'll cost 2500 INR.
Neighbor: ok. Will inform you.

------2 week later--------
Neighbor: look at these posters I got made for the concert... Since you have an eye for good design, tell me how you like them?
I: they are pretty good. Wont you require the site?
Neighbor: No. It'll work without the site.
---------1 year later-------
Neighbor: hey. Will you make a site for me? Where i can showcase the photographs i take and people can comment and like them?
I: Ya sure. Will cost you 4000 INR.

People will always ask us to fix their computer :/
Had a meeting with IT-director of our client.
Me: Yes, with our solution you will be sure that the details of all your 17.500 employees will be stored and accessible for all required third party systems. We will have a 6 month preliminary schedule and it will cost..
Random: Excuse me!
Random employee interrupts and has actually stepped into the meeting room.
Random: Can you take a look at my computer? Something is wrong.
IT-director: Is there noone else who can look at this?
Random: But it was working a minute ago. It probably will be a quick fix?
IT-director looks at me like "what even is this?"
IT-director: Go down to the 12th and talk to IT there, we're having a meeting here.
Random: I thought you guys who are so good with computers could fix this in a jiffy!
Me: Burning inside
IT-director: Just leave us, please.
Random leaves.
IT-director looks at me and I look knowingly back. We are both sad for a moment. Then we continue.9 -
I've been very busy in the last weeks so I haven't read a lot about the recent "Linux CoC drama".
Now I'm reading what happened and, well... I'm disgusted.
Especially being a woman, I'm disgusted knowing that a group of people pretend to speak for me saying that we don't need meritocracy, but only more "inclusivity" (whatever that means). I don't give a fuck of your gender, write useful code and I'll appreciate you. And please, give me back the original Linus Torvalds: his irreverence made me laugh.
Sure, sometimes discrimination exists, however good companies will hire you if you are competent, no matter how you look. Instead, I encountered some incompetent women whining about "nobody listen to my ideas because I'm a woman". No, RTFM and maybe you will able to propose better ideas and people will listen to you.26 -
Developer: Can you upgrade my machine to Windows 10? I need it for SQL server 2019.
IT Guy: Sure.
Some time later...
IT Guy: Good news, Windows 10 is loaded. Bad news, I need to update TPM to enable Bitlocker but the firewall is blocking me from downloading the update. I will need to download it from home tonight.
Developer: But you're the IT administrator...
IT Guy: Yes...

Boss: Something urgent has come up, can you take care of this.
Me: Okay.... But I am already working on X and it's a critical thing.
Boss: No, X is no longer of priority. You need to now pick up Y.
Me: But I was already........ Never mind. Yeah sure I will start working on Y.
Next day
Boss : What is the update on X?
Me: I was working on Y, also wasn't it de prioritized.
Boss : I think I was very clear when I communicated to you that X is very critical. Also you need to learn to manage your time.

When I was looking for an internship...
- Hello, I noticed your cv and you have a great portfolio! Are you familiar with responsive design?
- I have a basic knowledge on that, i am not an expert.
- Ok, can you come for an interview on Monday?
-Sure
Monday morning....
Interview with CEO...
- What's your experience with responsive design?
- I have a basic knowledge on that, i am not an expert.
- Sorry I need someone expert
- But the job is for junior dev and it's an internship
- Yes but man hours of someone to training you will be a cost for me.
- Ok, thank you
(Step before closing the door)Btw you should had check my portfolio, 4/8 websites are responsive.4 -
A real interaction I just had...
Team Member: "Can you handle this ticket for a bug fix?"
Me: "Whats the problem?"
TM: "We aren't exactly sure..."
Me: "Ok, so can you show it to me?"
TM: "We can't get it to happen again, and when it does the machine freezes and we can't debug it..."
Me: "So, if I find a fix then how do we test to make sure it worked?"
TM: "I'm not sure..."
Then today,
Product Manager: "How's that bug fix going?"
Me: "Well, let's see. The problem still hasn't been defined. I have never been able to recreate the issue. I have a hacky fix in a PR..."
PM: "Great, so we can deploy today?!?"
Me: "No, because we have no way to reproduce or test this issue at all..."
PM: "Do you think your fix will work?"
Me: "Honestly, no. If you're asking for my opinion then you can have it. IMO this is NOT a bug fix but a change to how the system operates altogether. This system was built by someone who didn't know what they are doing. We have done our best with it but it is a house of cards. And now the solution is to replace a card at the bottom layer. It is likely that no matter what fix we do (even when we can fucking test it) that it will topple the house of cards..."
PM: ~Looking at me in disbelief~
Me: "If you ask me for my honest professional opinion then you will get it. Keep that in the future if that honest response was outside what you expected."
PM: "I will do that, thanks for your assessment"
Where do we go from here? God only knows.
Praise Joe Pesci5 -
Me: Can you go to that page and see if the issue is fixed?
Colleague: if I go there it breaks things
Me: yes, it should be fixed now, can you please check it to make sure?
Colleague: but if I go there it will break things
Me: Can you just go to the page
Colleague: it broke something
Me: what did it break?
Colleague: I don't know
Me: ...then how do you know it's broken
Colleague: because the gallery doesn't work
Me: WELL THEN THATS WHAT'S FUCKING BROKEN THEN ISN'T IT13 -
Me: Boss, your new project is ready, we've tested the technical aspect but we're waiting on your approval before deploying, will you test it?
Boss: yeah sure, I'll test it in 5
*2 weeks later*
Boss: why isn't that project deployed yet?
Me: you haven't tested it, and we haven't gotten approval
Boss: oh right, I'll go test it right now!
*2 weeks later*
Boss: I NEED that project to go live RIGHT THIS MOMENT!!!
Me: sure, have you tested it yet?
Boss: nope, but I need it
Me: well, I'll put it live, but me and my colleagues are shifting responsibility to you, since you haven't tested it. Are you sure?
Boss: yeah, yeah whatever...
*put product online*
*2 days later*
Angry call from boss, bugs have been found, tell him that he approved the state of the product and that the bugs will go on the to-do list...
Boss is extremely pissed, but recognized his mistake...
Now, the boss actually tests everything thoroughly at the moment we tell him to! No more bugs, complaints, and I got a raise!5 -
Wannabe entrepreneurs approach for building their app.
Them: So you're familiar with Android?
Me: Yes but it's been a while, will take some time though.
Them: Not a problem.
Me: So shall we talk about the payment?
Them: Yeah, about that.. Listen, we don't have any funding now but we're sure this idea will be a hit and take off, then later we can pay you.
Me: Ok
*Gets up and leaves*10 -
Do you also like the idea, if devRant would have patreon or paypal for donations?
++ the rant if you like the idea. Maybe @dfox and @trogus will consider it then 😄
Servers are not cheap and it would be great if the community would finance itself.
Sure devRant got a Store, but I live in Europe and ordering/shipping is not so cheap, we got huge taxes for it. And I dont wont to order a stressball or sticker every month.

Me: Sure, I'll check it out. When are you planning to go live?
Other Dev : Oh it went live yesterday...
🤬😭2 -
"Hey, about that matter from yesterday..."
"Yes, what about that?"
"We need to talk about that again! How often do you trigger that system?"
"Once."
"You sure?"
"Yes, but i can check it, if you like."
*find references*
"See, only once."
"Can it happen at a random point later one?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes"
"Can you check it?"
"Okay."
*shows code"
"Look here, as you can see, it will not happen at other times."
"Do you have an idea why it could happen anyway?"
"Maybe that system does the action without my software telling it to do so, wasn't that specified that way?"
"Yes, but it normally does that roughly 10 seconds after you give the command the first time, so we thought maybe you could say what makes it do the action at other points maybe."
"Did you check that systems sourcecode?"
"No not yet. But did that happen with the older version?"
"No. But we didn't try."
"Did you change something between the versions?"
"Yes, the new feature."
"Could that make a change in behaviour?"
"I don't see how."
"Can you remove that feature for test?"
"We can take the old version."
"No, we need the new version, but without the feature you added."
"That IS the old version, there is no other difference!"
"Are you sure?"
"Would you like to see it in source control?"
"No, ~ okay. What do you think causes the problem?"
"I haven't had any new ideas since we talked yesterday."
"Okay. Mhhh,...okay. Lets talk again later."
YES SURE! BRING IT ON! I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT! PLEASE COME BY OR CALL ME AGAIN! AND BRING THE BOSS WITH YOU, TO SHOW HOW SERIOUS THE MATTER IS! LET ME TELL HIM THE STUFF I TOLD SEVEN TIMES LAST WEEK!2 -
Designer: Can you hide scrollbar and still make web scrollable?
I: Sure.
Designer: Ok fine, i'll do that in next design.
I: Wait, how users will know the web has more content?
Designer: I'll put the mouse icon on the bottom.
I: It is not good idea. People can overlook it.
Designer: It will be fine.
I: I strongly recommend to you not to do it.
Designer: Why?
I: Confusion besides other reasons.
Designer: If you can do it, do it.
I: Ok than.

You know the story about Battlefront 2? How long it takes to farm points to unlock those cool characters like Darth Vader etc? Yeah, it takes some time. Time that I necessarily don’t want to spend on mindless playing. I thought I’d try to beat the system by building this thing that would play the game for me by moving and jumping every few seconds.
I already have the code ready and now I just need to build the physical thing that will actually interact with the controller.
I am using an Arduino Uno with two micro servos.
Honestly I just want to see if I could build it, I’m not sure I will actually use it (you barely get any points if you’re not killing people anyway).
I’ll keep you posted with the result!13 -
Me: I have an input stream!
Library: I want a file.
Me: I can see your code, you will convert it to an input stream! Don't any of your constructors take an input stream?
Library: No. I want a file. Okay, you can also include an encoding.
Me: I don't care about encoding.
Library: Fine, just give me the file then.
Me: You mean I have to somehow convert my input stream into an actual file so I can give it to you?
Library: You're gradually catching on, yes.
Me: Can I add a new constructor myself that takes an input stream?
Library: Sure! Good luck in getting it approved by the maintainers and the new jar distributed everywhere, including Maven Central before your deadline.
Me: Fine, I'll just rearchitect everything so I can give you an actual file.
Library: And then everything will be fine.

Recipe: "baked developer"
you will need:
- 1 day = 1 story point
- 10SP per sprint
- every team member must deliver all the SPs.
Now for every sprint slap on 20+ hours of mandatory meetings, mix with 2-5 days of ad-hoc tasks, which must be addressed, because they are blocking the release/other teams/prod, and make sure all the devs try not to spill no matter what, and you get a perfectly burned out team.
Brittle/crispy on the outside, mashed/soft on the inside
enjoy!26 -
Just wanted to say cheers to all those coders among you who make sure their login is encrypted, their passwords are hashed and salted, their codes are tested and their forms are code injection safe.
No client will understand what you did, so take my props for it! After all, its our responsibility to make sure software is secure. That's all :) -
If a CPU were an employee...
CPU: Hey boss, I'm seeing you are giving me a lot of mathematical tasks that would really profit from splitting into parallel calculations. GPU's are great for that, we should get one.
Boss: But you can still do them, right? If you can do it, I'm pretty sure you can do it at GPU speeds. We gotta save up so I can buy another car!

Boss: Why is this taking so long?
CPU: I'm overloaded with work, so I'm overheating. Maybe you could buy a GPU to help me out, or at least a fan...
Boss: You're overheating? Your personal problems should not affect your professional life. Learn to get your shit together or we will hire someone who will

"Can you do this?"
Sure, give me the information I need...
"We don't have all of it yet"
So I can't do it then
"Well when can you do it"
When you get the information
"Do you need *all* of it"
Well, it's either I do half a job and waste my time, or get it all done in one shot
"The client wants it tomorrow"
When will we have the information?
"We don't know"
Well they aren't having it tomorrow then, are they...

This is for all the junior devs and people moving into the corporate world.
Remember, HR is there to protect the company, NEVER the employee.
Do not fall for the okie-doke when they tell you they are there to help.
If destroying you is cheaper in the long run than damage to the company then be sure they will slit you from ear-to-ear.5 -
Had a job interview back where I want to move(2300 miles away), doing exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately it was for a senior developer, a bit over my pay grade.
First Interview: "It is above your skill level, but I like you. We will make it fit you."
Second Interview(technical): " You did super well! I will make sure to pass the good news onto the boss! I am excited to work with you soon!"
Response to my thank you email: "We decided to not persue you further for this position. We are going with someone who has more experience."
Why string me along?!?!4 -
We mistakenly think that you need motivation to start something. The reality is that often you just need to start and then the motivation will come. And when it goes away again, you just keep on going. Because while it sure is helpful, you are still capable of doing something without.3

Real life job interview…
Manager: what about this problem? Could you solve it? (Showing me a problem about scanning a 2d array to find a value written on a piece of paper)
Me: sure! Just give me a piece of paper and I will write a solution.
Manager: no need for that. I don’t have the knowledge to check that anyway… if I wanted you to solve it I would have called one of my programmers.
…
Manager: do you have any question about the company?
Me: What do you exactly do in the company? I wonder what is the purpose of a person that makes questions about things he doesn’t know.3 -
People: I will never put one of those smart speakers in my home! You're basically just putting in a microphone that will spy on you!
Also People: Hang on I have to grab my phone/high-fidelity microphone/high resolution camera/GPS tracker/Data Aggregator and make sure I have it with me literally everywhere I go, because who knows when I will want to comment on a cute picture of a cat!?13 -
Boss: Can you modify the prototype, so that I can show it off to the customers who will visit?
Me: Sure, when do you need it?
Boss: In two hours.
Lesson learned: Always have a branch in your git with a working demo.7 -
Always remeber:
The interview goes both ways. Ask the interviewer how he likes to solve problems, and how he works with ppl. This will give you the information to decide if you want to work with him or the company.
This is especially effective on HR: ask about thier corporate culture and how they deal with promotions/good people and how they deal with bad people.
And make sure you visit glassdoor.com before the interviews begin. -

C#: You don’t want a horse, but Microsoft wants you to have a horse. Now it’s up to you if you want Microsoft or not.
Swift: Don’t buy an overpriced Unicorn if all you wanted was a horse.
JavaScript: If you want to buy a horse & confidently ride it, make sure you read a book named "You don't know horse".
PHP: After enough optimization, your horse can compete the top most horses in the world; but deep down, you'll always know it's an ass.
Hack: Let's face it, even if you take the ass from the ass lovers and give them back a horse in exchange, not many will ride it.
Ruby: If you want a horse, make sure you ride it on top of rail roads, even if the horse can't run fast on rails.
Python: Don't ride your horse and eat your sandwich on the same line, until you indent it on the next line.
Bash: Your horse may shit everywhere, but at least it gets the job done.
R: You are the horse. R will ride you.

At my next job interview. "So, do you have your lpic or redhat certification in vigor?"
Me. "Better. I have these, motherfucker."
(They arrive a few days ago, but I couldn't show them till now. If you're living outside US and worries about if you can get your stickers, be sure you will. They made all their way to Spain, and had no trouble to receive them. Be patient, and eventually they'll arrive safely and beautiful.)2 -
Supervisor: so you're going to write a perl script that will compile a jar that will be used to invoke a web service
Me: okay. What does the web service do?...
Supervisor: I'm not sure how it works. It'll just return a success or error code
Me: so I'm just going to invoke a black box?
Supervisor: that's a good way to think of it
Me: so how does the qa process work with this black box/how can we debug?
Supervisor: we don't have qa for it and we can't debug
What the fuck?!?!? You expect me to call a literal fucking black fucking box?!?! This isn't lambda calc you jabroni.2 -
[Dark Rant]
I'm sick of this stupid tech world.
Don't get me wrong, I love tech. I just can't stand anymore the global brainwashing that we're part of.
Think about all the huge companies making profit on our data. For a better service, yeah sure, but do we really understand what the cost is?
Ok sure, you don't care about your data because you trust these companies and the advantages are all worth it. What about the fact that we are all forced to buy the next new smartphone after 2 years?
Like if removable batteries were a problem for us, users. Or like the audio jack. Because now someone decided that the pricey wireless headphones are Just What You Need™.
Do you think you own your smartphone?
No, you don't. You are paying a bunch of money for something that soon will be just a useless brick of glass and metal which you can't repair. But you'll be happy anyway.
Someone is so happy to the point that they will defend their favorite company, doesn't matter how they decided to stick it into their ass.
Open your eyes, you've been brainwashed.25 -
Team leader: so can you develop uwp application?
Me: sure...
Team leader: ok! You're hired to find our bugs , by the way, we give our employees Microsoft Lumia phones.
Me: OMG.im out. the phone will get bsod.

Work: there is little work for our freelancer we're getting rid of him at the end of the year
Me: are you sure, that will put a lot of work on my schedule.
Work: I'm sure you can handle it
*two weeks later*
Work: have you finished feature xyz yet
Me: nope had a server crash today so pushed it back
Work: why didn't you get "free lancers name here" to do it for you
Me: I could of if you didn't fire him, he could of also done the other features you want too
Work: ah ok1 -
Avoiding bad companies starts at the job interview. Remember that the job interview is not only for them to evaluate you, but also the other way around. Make sure to ask a lot of questions. What are they doing, how are they working, what help is there if you get stuck, are they doing code reviews, what will you be doing etc.
The job interview is the opportunity for you to get an inside view of the company. Don’t just accept any job because you are desperate. Luckily qualifies devs are much needed in companies.
Also, make sure to go to multiple job interviews so you can see the differences. I think it can be difficult to avoid in the beginning, but as you get more experience, you can sort of tell whether it’s a good or bad company at the job interview.
Though sometimes you are just unlucky. In that situation: leave. It is so good damn easy to get a job in this field.3 -
I'M TIRED OF HEARING THAT DEVELOPMENT IS NOT A CREATIVE FIELD! Creativity is emerging new ideas from non-existent ones. It is not confined to pretty designs or well-written copy. Sure, devs are logical problem solvers – but not a single dev will solve those problems the same way. Code is like the paint on our dark-themed canvases and you can see yourself out if you think devs are just robotic coding machines8

Slack Boss: hey, could you check work of dev that is okey, we want this update fast.
Me: hey, just tell him to open PR and assign me, I will check and merge changes.
Slack notification: Dev: Hey, could you please merge Pull request on the project ?
Me thinking, hmm weird, I didn't get email.
Checking github, 0 pull request.
Me: hey, I don't see any pull request open, and when you make pr, just assign me I will merge it right away.
Dev: takes half a day
Dev: Makes pr and assign correctly me.
Dev on slack: HERE is PR open now @me.
I get 3 notification to see this PR, sure at least it is there.
I check this PR, 50 commits, X conflicts, cannot merge this.
Me: Hey, @dev please fix conflicts in your PR.
DEV: takes another 2 days to respond.
Boss in the meantime: hey, have you pushed those new changes ?
Me: I am waiting for conflicts to resolve.
Dev: I fixed the conflicts @me.
I check the PR conflicts are there.
Me: are you sure you pushed your changes @dev ? I don't see them resolved
Dev: takes another day and pushes changes to resolve conflicts.
Me: merges PR to master becaus he based it on master, I will sync the developer branch myself.
All good, everybody happy.
I write to dev: Next time base your changes on develop branch and resolve conflicts before making PR.
Two weeks later new PR From this dev.
Based on Master, conflicts everywhere.8 -
I hate when someone throws at me some task all of sudden with a tight deadline.
Wednesday was one of those days.
manager: we want to remove all the offices because of our tight budget this year (multimillionaire company, lol), everyone will use office 365;
me: ahn... ok, but everything was already tested? Some macros, routines, old documents can be a big problem, as far I know (I don't use M$ at home, servers are Linux, so I really don't know about that). I can do some tests, only will need some real documents to make sure everything will do fine;
manager: yeah, yeah, everything will be fine, the high management already decided, don't worry, just remove the offices in the company, ok?;
me: alright...
*me deploys the remotion script in every f*cking machine*
48 hours later...
manager: well... everyone is complaining about the office 365, random complains, can you attend all the calls and reinstall if you can't solve the problem?
WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!

Real fact: 1999
IT: IT, how can I help?
MrB: I'm Butcheek. This program is shit, I can't even log-in!
IT: oh.. Ok Mr. Butcheek, let’s see if I can help...
MrB: of course you can: fix this shitty program and made me log in!
IT: I’ll try to do my best to assist you, can you...
MrB: I just want to log in! Can you speak my language? This new program is ridiculous, I wonder why you IT guys changed the old one, it was a mess but at least I could log in...
IT: I'm sorry you are experiencing this problem, but to assist you I need to know exactly what's the problem
MrB: I CANT LOG IN!!!
IT: ok, I understand this, but can you please provide some more information? Do you receive any particular error messages?
MrB: it says “wrong password” but it's not true!
IT: Ok, that's strange. Look, I'm resetting your password and then you will try again. At the first log in you will be asked to change it again, ok?
MrB: just be quick, I can't waste any more time on this!
IT: sure... Ok done. Please, can you try again? The password is “butcheek”
MrB: it asks for the username. What am I supposed to write here?
IT: “butcheek”
MrB: oh... Ok. And what's the password?
IT: “butcheek”
MrB:... No... Wait... Ok, “butcheek” is the password but what's the username?
IT: “butcheek”!
MrB: you don't understand, I have to put both username AND password!
IT: I know! “butcheek”! For both username AND password!
MrB: so I have to write “butcheek”-”butcheek”?
IT: yes, “butcheek”-”butcheek”!
MrB: so... “butcheek”...twice? Sounds weird... are you sure?
IT: yes I'm sure! However, you can choose either to write “butcheek” twice or “ASS” once, if you prefer...4 -
I'm a lead engineer, I design, I code, I debug, I test, I struggle, I deliver, I'm just a basic building block in my company, hardly involve in product roadmap planning. This is pretty clear in my LinkedIn profile. Jp Morgan recruiter called me for Vice president role. VP? Seriously? me skipping 4-5 levels, just with an interview process? Are you kidding me?
I asked her two times "...are you sure?", I lost my words, somehow gathered courage and asked, "what's the portfolio looks like, how many people will report to me?" Then she, calmly revealed that it's just an ic dev role and they name it that ways in their company.
What the actual ducking-duck-duckkk!
P.s. not sure about jpmc rest of the world but that's how it is in jp Morgan india.8 -
Boss: You have one month to finish the program.
Me: It will be complicated but lets see how it goes.
To be cleared the end date is 2 of July.
Boss on the last friday: You have to finish on the 20th of June
Me: Yeah sure....
Boss yesterday: You have to finish on the 15th of June.
Me: You said one month.
Boss today: you have to finish by the end of this week
Me: No problem Boss you will have it tomorrow!!!
Boss: You have to. There are more projects waiting...
Me: -.-
This is what I have to deal with. But hey... don't forget... tomorrow is a new day so ... fuck it.5 -

Yeah sure, the Metaverse will be bigger than the Internet.
I really believe that. Short of a system collapse, there's nothing which will stop some Web/VR/AR amalgam from eventually going mainstream. If anything, a prolonged pandemic will make humans hunger for more digital entertainment and socializing options.
Might take 5 years, or 25, but it will happen in some form. Eventually, people will even readily accept various augmentations to their bodies to further immerse themselves and connect to digital experiences.
BUT:
We're still pre-bubble.
Does no one remember the dotcom crash?
Facebook/Meta will become the new Yahoo, decimated to a sliver of its former glory. Million dollar hype NFTs will become the new $10 parked domain names. 99.99% of all current efforts and content will end up like a modern day Geocities Archive.
So yeah... when I read that my pension fund is considering "investing in metaverse technologies"...
...you fucking bet it's time to transfer to a different fund!22 -
Me - Yeah great so you say it's big data we are gonna be analyzing and having to store, are you currently utilizing a service and aggregating any of it into smaller manageable segments?
Client - well yeah it's lots and lots of data, we can share it with you if you sign a nda.
Me - ok... sure, how are you gonna share it with me.
Client - oh I can email you the spreadsheet.
Me - .... Spreadsheet ... Um... Ok... 'Stands up and walks away to tell this as the most interesting meeting of the month, to some one that will get it'

TL;DR
This works: email+rant@domain.com
Spam filtering protip:
Did you know that the email spec allows you to use youremail+something@domain.com and the emails still come to you. This is especially useful when registering to a lot of places where you are not sure whether they will spam you or not. Filtering will be easy because you have a unique email address for each service. Also you can find out which service leaked your email address to spammers.
Additionally if you want to register to a service with two accounts but still want to use the same email, you can do this easily by adding +whatever in your email address.6 -
Me : Can I have your Server Access to deploy project.

Helped out a junior today with a minor JS issue he had. Told him, "cool so that should fix it on this page but it may break things elsewhere. Make sure you check it otherwise the client will go into meltdown. "

“Like herding cats.” I’ve heard this out of the mouths of PMs and other management types. No shit that’s what it’s like because cats aren’t herd animals. It’s what happens when you put some of the smartest people in your company at the bottom of a hierarchy, and then have some doofus manage us that reads inspirational leadership blogposts all day.
We will undermine the shit out of your shit, and you won’t even know it’s happening.
We will make every single reprimand of yours into a joke while you’re not in the building. “Hey Joe, I’m pretty sure what you’re doing right now is spreading negativity. Don’t you know it’s contagious?”
We will game every single metric you try to use on us. We will game every single one of your leadership agendas.
When I think of these things, I laugh in my heart like Skeletor.3 -
Hello (World)! Noob here. I installed devRant around 5 days ago. I just keep reading the rants and didn't created my account because i was not sure if i will stay here for long time coz most (cr-)apps are boring.

Yeah, sure Fortune. Please tell me more about my personal finances that you know nothing about.
The longer this drags on the more it feels like a war against the proletariat.
I also feel like the aristocracy is building a terrible financial charade that will be the toast of the town by November. They REALLY want to make sure the labor doesn't see any rise in wages. Can't have those peons thinking they can get ahead, right?
It's going to be the best sales pre-thanksgiving! It's going to be so popular one would say it's going to be on sale on fire, or is it a fire sale?
When November rolls around, I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.15 -
User: "Why isn't this process updated? There's something wrong with your system."
Me: "Did you submit the request?"
User: "Uh yeah I'm sure I did..."
Me: "Go submit the request again." (they never did the first time)
User: "I don't know how. Will you show me?" *shows user how to do it* "Ok I did it now."
Me: "You did it wrong, you need to resubmit it."
User: "Ok I resubmitted it."
* a week later *
User: "The process still hasn't shown any progress."
Me: "You didn't resubmit it like you said you did."
User: "Will you show me how to do it again?"
* fuck me *
Me: "Sure..."
Process works as expected and everyone lives happily ever after, except the developer that knows it is just a matter of time till the next user blatantly lies, has no respect for anyone's time, and demonstrates a complete lack of desire to care about their job at all and just wants to bitch and complain like a typical lazy ass-hat.6 -
THE FUCK!!!!
Some stupid assholes on my company have adquired the idiotic habit to call me to supervise some videoconferences using Skype, Hangouts or other fucking systems that i never heard about. I hate it because is a big fat waste of time. You don't need a engineer to handle your stupid password mismatch, your "why this is so slow? can you fix the internet". Or why the sound is so crappy or why don't you have a better microphone. This are your fucking computers, and your fucking calls. what the next? sending your emails? Wipe your asses? is not my fucking role.
Next time I will put your notebooks inside your assholes. Your crap will be better transmitted for sure. -

Client : We want to develop this particular software. While developing it, we will be following Agile methodology.
Developers: Sure.
After developer achieves few features and decides to give 1st Demo of the software to the client.
Client : Wtf is this? This is an incomplete software, there are bugs in it.
Developer : Yes, you point that out to me and I will solve them.
Client: What do you mean point them out for you l, couldn't you do it yourself?
Developer: As a standard method, we often do unit tests, but we are not testers and with a strict deadline to match, we are more on the core implementation then checking again and again for minor bugs.
Client : I thought it would be a full proof software without any bugs in the 1st demo.
Developer : Software development is a process. It's not straightforward, hence you only mentioned at the initial, it's agile.
Client : If that's so, let's make it not agile and make you rot in hell for the next few fays. Now you next time show me a demo with no bugs, great complicated features and we will not mention you our expectations, predict them by yourselves, and most importantly, here's an impractical strict deadline.4 -

CSS quick maffs:
Using viewport units to define font size but sometimes it's too small?
Instead of font-size: 10vw;
use font-size: calc(10vw + 20px);
This will make sure that font size is AT LEAST 20 px no matter the viewport width. Treat the resulting font size like a function of viewport width and feel free to experiment with it. With calc in that case you can achieve the best typeface responsiveness possible.13 -
The more I learn about programming the more terrified I become about having huge knowledge gaps and learning something wrong by possibly making wrong assumptions about how certain things work or by falling on bad tutorials. I'm constantly hyped about coding, and at the same time I always feel I will never be able to say confidently "I know how to code".
How the hell do you make sure you are learning programming correctly as a self taught? Or do i just have to accept that no matter how and what I code there will always be a better way to do it, resulting in me constantly feeling as a low-skilled coder?3 -
When will medium and its coding tutorials die out already? Why the hell are every fucking post of this plattform so cringy af, like tf why you start your tutorial with a fucking irrelevant meme you dumb asshole? Your code snippet is mostly garbage and you aint explain shit; I am not even sure if the code is yours. Go eat a dick and learn the subject properly before even start to teach people online.6

Corp: yeah, you can spend more than 4h but be sure to spice things up abit. Since it is frontend, and all we spin up from the backend is flat data. But it must exhale an exciting user experience.
Me: stop the cringe pls!6 -
Ever open a mail with a body consisting only of "can you look into this?" before noticing a mail exchange is attached, and in it is a week long discussion about an issue new to you where someone has said on your behalf that it will be fixed by the end of the day?
If I'm lucky I might know if someone - and if so, who - is working (or has worked) on that aspect of the system by the end of the day.
There are no words in any language I know that will sufficiently describe how nonexistent the chances are in any of the infinite amount of parallel alternate universes where I implement and deploy a fix by the end of the day.
But sure, I'll look into it.1 -
Best email of the year so far, from a "reputable" IT supplier.
I had asked for numerous copies of x86 and x64 copies of Windows 7.
Clarification email came back "I can't find an 84 bit copy of Windows. Can you clarify?"
Not sure that mail will be beaten this year. They weren't even looking for an 86 bit version.
Unfortunately I just had to explain rather than play along for a few hours as time limited.

TEAM PROJECTS IN UNIVERSITY BE LIKE:
You will need to write a paragraph of text, approximately 100 words long.
In order to manage your work more effectively, you must split the paragraph into sentences and each one of you should write one.
Make sure you don't clash with each other, the text is meaningful and it flows nicely.
You have one month: you should meet at least twice a week to discuss how to go about the tasks, review your work and plan ahead.
We will be checking on your progress on a weekly basis.
Most importantly, do not just wait until the last minute and have one person do all the work: that's just silly.7 -

A team at school spent 3-4months on an eStore web app, for selling items. The title was "Securing your eStore".
When they were done with their presentation, the examinator asked: "But... You haven't said a thing about the security part."
"Oh, sure we did, as we showed you, we added validation on the email address and credit card text fields etc. If you press the Pay button here, you will get an alert()-dialog telling you which fields are invalid..."2 -
Yay! Finally got my first job in IT.
They call it just "IT admin/sysadmin", but it's... eh..
What I do is make sure the servers work (sysadmin part) and make desktop/mobile apps. So far, the company seems to be quite nice, there are already 4 devs who are friendly. *knocks on wood*
Will see how it goes, and I'd like to thank you for sharing your stories. Learned quite a lot from them!5 -
Pro Tip: If you're working Tier 1 tech support, before you start reading your script to the caller, be sure to let the caller complete at least one sentence to tell you what steps he's performed and what the error message is vs. what you're thinking it is. That'll save you from a lot of grief with your boss who will ask you why the customer was screaming at you on the call recording to SHUT UP FOR A SECOND SO I CAN FINISH TELLING YOU WHAT THE PROBLEM IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!8

Why do some people have to be so self-centered?
They asked for my help with a logo. I said I will help even without any charges. I know they don't want to spend money. And that's why I frankly said I can help free. But then they said they will feel bad then and ask for my quotation. Ok, I sent.
They said "Sorry it is too high, can you give 60% discount?" Ok, sure.
Then they asked if they can get it in 4 days. Ok, I said.
Then they said they changed the name just now.
At least give me a fucking ounce of respect.2 -
About starting your career at a medium-bigger company that's well-established, versus starting at a smaller company.
That's my point of view:
It's always wiser to begin at a company that's more established (you will also be sure that you will get paid on time). I started at a well-established company, and I managed to buy gear, travel, do stuff, and then I realised that I wanna do more, not only live to work 😎.
Smaller companies are kinda risky, think of it, their goal is to reach the level of a well-established company, which is some levels lower than that. On the other hand, if you do well at a smaller company, your next goal will be to work for a bigger company, which will surely be nicer, more professional and will pay better. So you will have managed to et there with all the skills in your pocket already, which will come in handy later!
Bigger companies are excellent if you have a family (wife and kids), they provide stability, that's the most important thing, but I believe that in order to get "settled" in a company like that, you should at least have tried something else first, like doing your own thing or get challenged in more complicated gigs that require you to up your skills.
In the end, it's all sun and fun, with you code editor by your side 😉. I'm interested to see your opinions.1 -
HTTPS requests in most languages:
Import a couple of libraries, you may need to install a few as well. It's possible that you will need to initialize and set up the socket. Be sure to specify SSL settings. Create the connection, provide it a URL, and attempt the connection. Read the response, usually in chunks. You may need to manually create a buffer of fixed size, depending on if the language has buffer helper classes or not. You will probably need to convert the input stream response to a string to do anything with it. Close the connection and clean up any buffers used.
HTTPS requests in Python:

When your non-programmer boss asks how exactly some code/bug was fixed.
"You sure? I mean, alright... "
It's not like every time something doesn't work right, this will be the fix. We're not going to have a conversation in the future where you help me troubleshoot something by remembering parts of this conversation.1 -
Boss : we need you for a voice conference at 7AM tomorrow in case of technical questions
Me : Sure thing
I work from home so will most probably still be in just underwear1 -
Just don't open it...
Will definitely not pretend to be productive 24/7. But the below help me reach a satisfactory 8/5 most day's.
- Exercise in the morning
- Eat breakfast
- Listen to good music
- Make sure to have fun moments throughout the workday (++ for initiating)
- Catch air, have a walk, take a break
- Minimize interactions with toxic people
- Be open in sharing knowledge, thoughts, work , good people will repay you
- Get in the kitchen, cook nice healthy meals
- Set concrete and reachable targets
- Remain eager to learn
- Celebrate successes
- Spent time with friends and family
- Catch enough sleep
And above all, DON'T open devRant!!! -
Yup, sure our team of three devs will build you a fully functioning e-commerce site from scratch that grabs data from several APIs and uploads it to several more.
You need it in two weeks? No problem.
Me: Wait...what the...?!
One week in and I only have access to test one of the four necessary APIs as the client hasn't signed the necessary paperwork with other providers.7 -
Just added some stickers to my notebook
Lord and saviour tux will always make sure that the only kernel ever running on this notebook is the Linux kernel 🐧
Thank you devRant for the stickers and I am proud to advertise you. Please stay way it was when I got here.4 -
Today at 7am i got s phone call please go to this client
I responded sure no problem what am i going to do at this client.....
Don't worry they said you will find out when you get there...
So i go to the client and as I expected its not dev related at all
It was for installation of point of sale tills and printers 😱😱
That are 7 years old with no cables
(2 hour drive to get here)
Anyway I ended up selling hardware to them....this developer is going places 😂🙈1 -
kinda long but please read (skip to the bullets if you're lazy):
hey dR. I stumpled across a search engine that aims to help the environment. it's called "Ecosia" and it will plant a tree for every ~45 searches you make. just think, one stubborn bug could make you the reason for a new forest! I'm not sure if it's legitimate or not, but apparently it uses 80% of its profits to plant trees, and makes that profit from ads. is it safe to use? I'm not sure.
here is what you should know (some are based on claims by ecosia and aren't proved, but probably true):
- they plant a tree for about every 45 searches you make
- they are able to plant trees by using money from ads
- they "respect privacy"
- they're "fully transparent"
- they're a "social buisness"
- [I hope this isn't a turnoff] the search results are powered by bing
- since 1.9, vivaldi has included ecosia as one of the preset search engines (I'm not sure if it's the default)
- it has opera, firefox, and chrome extensions
thanks!9 -
* Teams meeting, doing some early testing with the client *
Dev Team: This is an early build, so please be aware that bugs can occur at this stage. (That's why we didn't want to show it but you insisted)
Client: Sure, don't worry.
* 15 minutes later, first bug happens because some state management at the front end was not tunned yet *
Client: Can you solve this bug?
Dev Team: Sure, just let us replicate it and we come back to you as soon as...
Client: Can you solve it now?
Dev Team: ... Okay, let us ser whats happening and we will come ba...
Client: You don't need to hang up, just solve it.
*Dev Team internal chat*
Me: Fuck
Other dev: Fuck
My leader at the time: Fuuuuuck
PS: This happened in two separate occasions. I hated that project.6 -
Network, talk to people, and get yourself on the spot, document everything and make sure that you take action when others do not.
Kissing ass can take you far, but I ain't about that life, because sooner or later the fucker that promoted you because he liked his pp getting suckd by you will leave or get put in the spot. Or change alleagiances.
Your best bet is to be ANYTHING OTHER THAN A FUCKING NECKBEARD WITH AUTISM and be someone that people likes being around, I know it sounds hardcore, but people around you will ignore the things you don't know if you are a charismatic guy. Dress well, work out or find ways to improve yourself in ways that are noticeable, use human psychology to be fucking likeable.
Work hard, both on yourself and on your craft, study, get better, be social.
Stop being a twat because high chances are that the higher executives of your branch will not give a shit about your knowledge, but how good is to have you around. Join the circle, fuck your opinions about anything else, this is business, and business doesn't care about a lot of things. Don't cut throats, but make yourself a force to be reckoned with.
Source: Upper management, deals with VPs on a daily basis, knows that being a neckbeard will not take you anywhere.9 -
Another Developer: bro, shit hit the fan. The x web service is throwing some error. Can you take a look please. I want to go home. I'm tired.
Me: Yea sure bro no worries.
Another Developer: I go pee, after that I will delegate the ticket to you.
(Another Developer goes to the washroom)
Me: (04:59 PM) Oh time to pack-up and get the fuck out of here
Me: (05:08 PM) Receive a message on Viber from Another Developer. It reads "Fuck you, I'm going to rub my balls on your desk"3 -
I have a coworker who, when frustrated with a bug in his code then finds the simple solution, loudly exclaims "You Idiot", or "Ah dammit", or "What the Hell?!". He also belches loudly, and says a few other humorous things throughout the day. It has inspired me to make a sound board that would say whatever he would say in a given situation. Don't think it will ever get built, but it sure would be hilarious!2

She: Hey, if I send you a video (made of photos), could you please rotate the images (they are rotated 45 degrees)?
Me: hmmm sure.
*She sending the video*
Me: Wait... there is some text over the rotated photos...
She: That's a problem?
Are you fucking kiding me? How the fuck I can rotate *only* the images in a video where you put also some text (not rotated)???
Can't you visualize that if I do that, the text will be rotated 45 degrees and the video will be still wrong? -
To those able to join us in the Netherlands:

"You should have done it differently! You didn't know it and it's your fault for not asking me about stuff you didn't know existet. I often screw things up and blame others, but i made the boss like me so it's okay. And since i lost my spine some time ago, i will now go suck my own dick and feel awesome . "
Not sure that is exactly what he said, but he meant it. -
NEW RULE
From the 15th minute of a meeting onward, my mind will phase out and I'll stop listening.
It's your care to make sure you say everything important before that happens.7 -
You know how my 'about' here says I create features from bugs?!? Well if you didn't before, now you do.. :P
Anyhow, today the most bizzare thing happened.. Customer played 'reverse uno card' on me..
Meaning?!
They reported a feature missing on uat env, when in fact I fixed a bug they have on prod..
Not sure how I should feel about this, but it sure made my day! (: I just hope they will not open a bug report for this missing bug..4 -
I have a big progress / update meeting to lead my team tomorrow.
Our investor has "ideas" on features and things that will significantly change the information we have to include in our code.
We are suppose to launch Jan,1 2019
He says I'll Call you tonight to give you the details so you will be ready for tomorrows meeting. .........
............
...........
yep never calls.
Fucking Awesome! can't wait to tell my team tomorrow. "glad you all came in today, looks like we have to change somethings I'm just not sure what yet."
Maybe I'll order pizza and beer to the office and we will all play video games until he shows up. and say if you aren't going to take this seriously why should we.
Fuckers!!!!!!!!!!5 -
If you host a forum for dev discussions, make sure that, even in code blocks, every single or double quote will be replaced by quirky typographic quote characters that resemble their ASCII equivalents so closely that cut-and-paste programming will be punished by hours of searching the error in the wrong place.4

I have this coworker who praises himself or being vegan an caring a lot about the world and his health, but smokes and drinks quite a lot. He also is very friendly with everyone but then he privately complains about them with me and goes back to be friendly.
I could ignored this behavior until it started affecting me. Now he is just passive aggressive with everyone, including me. The kind of guy who sends a slightly bitter comment with a wink at the end almost everyday. The kind of guy who will talk to you non-stop like he is your best friend and next morning don't even look at you. The one who will try to teach you some lesson whenever you say something publicly (which he did tons of times and ended up fucking up because he had no idea what he was talking about).
I feel like ignoring him from now on no matter what he says, because he is only waiting for the perfect opportunity to make you feel like a not caring human being so he can keep standing out and controlling everyone. Yes, if you ever try to organize something, he will make sure to criticize you.
So... that's it.2 -
Me: "can you please send my credentials for the database?"

Congrats to jweiland.net for not being able to support their customers.2 -
Android flow I’ve found(fixed in android 8, working on 7.1.1):
To make app uninstallable by the normal user make the app device administrator, add “android.permission.SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW” to the manifest and make sure it’s not granted by the user.
Now when you try to uninstall the app, it tells you to disable it from device administrators but the device administrator disable dialog is System Window handled by the app itself and if the app has this permission but not granted, settings will crash with SecurityException leaving the app untouched.4 -

Devops (By Azure) is so stupid.... (I won';t even start of YAML, it will be a 10pages rant).
me : Ok I have 5 projects, each has it's own Azure conexxion for deploy.
Me : Can I do just ONE shared connexion ?
Devops : Yes. You need to click 150 buttons and it's done !
Me : Ok. /* doing actions */
Me : Ok ready !
Me : Project 1 do your release pipeline !
project 1 : Sure, just wait 5 minutes.
5 minutes later
Project 1 : All good.
Me :Ok now sharing test ! Project 2 : do your pipeline !Project 2 : Sure ! It's strated !
Me : Ok I'll go take a beer
... 1 hour later..
Me : project 2 ? PROJECT 2??!!!
Me : fine... going into logs.
Message : You must accept the shared conexion from Project 1 before pipeline can run
Me : WTF ? I literally just SHARED it to project 2,3,4,5 !!!
Why that idiot check ?!
One thing is sure, I hate devops more than I hate JavaScript.5 -
Found this aluminum Arch Linux sticker on Etsy. I'm sure some of you will enjoy it. I thinking of ordering a few myself.

I mean, ONE of these days, the Prod pipeline has GOT to work... doesn't it?? Just basic odds say EVENTUALLY it will, doesn't it??
Of course, I'm sure I could have had it working long ago if not for the fact that we have to use common scripts developed by another team that we can't alter, and just guess where the problem is.
You know, standardization and DRY are good principles generally, but if you just apply them without thinking and without at least SOME flexibility, you only make matters worse.2 -
Just learned that the existing US administration is going to restrict AI to a just a handful of allowed companies. They are talking about limiting AI like they did physics during WW2.
If you don't hate your government then you don't know the evil shit they are doing.
Not sure what will happen come January.12 -
Visual Studio in the recent releases got some updates where it "accelerates build time" by caching DLLs or something
Good in theory? sure.
In practice? So very often, a "hot reload" now doesn't trigger a DLL swap. VS says that changes have been updated but you see stale code and you've to turn off the program and re-run it
I'm sure there's a way to turn this acceleration off and will do that after this rant, but I don't get how such retarded features get green-lit and make it to production :v
I understand that for biiiig solutions with minutes of build-time, this would be god-sent, but if it's this unreliable in my 8-Project Solution, I wonder how unreliable it'd be in bigger Solutions
at least turn it off by default if you know it's shit ffs.5 -
Nothing makes me happier than listening to my neighbor's disgusting banda music playing as loud as it can.
No worries tho, the cops will be here in about 20 mins (it usually is 20) one would have expected that after getting the cops called on you for 3 times already you would get the message:
No homeslice. If i want to listen to that cantina piece of shit music on my fucking friday nights I will make sure to let u know :) but I actually have class so no thank you.
This is why Trump hates us (Mexicans) -

Learned an important lesson today- Never be sentimental towards your code.
The only thing common in all clients is the habit of changing their requirements, how sure they are about the unsurity of what they want. And if you are sentimental towards the code you write, about a difficult algorithm you implemented you will be in a mess -
So, let me preface this by saying I come from a backend (mostly c#) background.
The way React handles objects changing in state is horrendous. And if you decide to try using hooks, God help you.
I honestly don't know if it's Blazor or something else that will kill js, but something absolutely needs to. It is a dumb, terrible language. It has to go.
All that said, of course I'll go back to work on it tomorrow.
Sorry, js/react guys/gals. Just venting. I'm sure once I 'get it', it will make sense.7 -
Yay, Dubba didnt die.
Okay, hello'ed back, lets fucking rant.
Im fucking SICK and TIRED and ANNOYED by all freaking cloud fanboys. Yeah, sure. You get scalability. You waste less resources. Sure. But it depends on use case. There is suprising ammount of services that can be run on VPS or dedicated servers that will be a lot cheaper if you just DONT run it on cloud. And dont you dare to missinterpret me. I fully recognize that there are valid uses for cloud services. But for fuck sakes, its not anwser for ALL of your needs, and it costs insane ammount of money if you use it where you should use dedicated.
WHY we, as humanity came to this place where self-claimed "proffesionals" will anwser you "cloud" before you even ask your question.
No, fuck off, take calculator and think for around 60 seconds. And than decide if you need cloud or not.
And no, this mail server will be fucking few times more expensive on cloud, and I know it becouse I have fucking calculator and I was running it past 1.5 year and actually run sometimes htop, so stop bullshitting me.
Sorry if some cloud die-hard felt offended but it is exacly how I see and feel it.
Peace.1 -

If any lecturer in my department discovers you are very fast in typing, the lecturer will turn you to a typing slave.

I work with content. More specifically I work on content migration and improvement.
We connect to many platforms and pull and push documents into it. This one time we had to connect to some outrageously expensive (6 figures) system which we obviously couldn't afford to buy just for testing. The client wouldn't give us a testing server either.
My literal warning: "We need a testing server because we're gonna push it until it breaks. Then we know the limit." Client: "nah it will be fine." Us: "I promise you the server will go down..." Client: "It's a stable system. You can test in your own folder on our server"
10 minutes later we had an angry client because the server crashed due to overload.
I'm not sure if I'm annoyed or amused :p -

Show a comment field below a discussion, with rich text and link functionality, to inspire people to craft a detailed answer.
Maybe they will forget to type Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C before hitting send.
So when they do, show a message that "you must be logged in to comment". Use a JS SPA to make sure that there is no way for users to restore their drafted comment. Don't show it after they logged in. When they use their browser's back button, they surely want to exit the application, so make sure to discard any transient data in that case.
Seen on WordPress.org using their infamous Gutenberg block editor.7 -

I grabbed 30 random DOS malware samples from my collection, rolled via urand over Python list, and tried to figure out how they work.
Results:
1x zipped EICAR
4x working but effectively useless ("yeah you wiped the first 100 sectors of the drive... but you wrote their prior contents. Literally nothing's changed...")
10x CPU hang
10x crashdump back to DOS
5x crashdump back to DOS but ERRORLEVEL=0 so normal termination despite real errors being given?
also make sure SOURCER is disassembling using 486 or Pentium opcodes or it misses some 286/386 opcodes and will count half the program as data.2 -
Remote work as a sure thing. WFH 4EVER.
Currently I'm still not confident that most companies will keep or adhere to a remote-first culture because those are full of managers who can't see past their own insecurities.
We will probably see a wave of company failures and bankruptcies (sorry, I should have said "industry consolidation") in a few years while those few that managed to automate away their future-averse middle bosses take over the world.
The day you can't tell if your boss, that you only see in a Zoom window, is organic or a fully virtual #SFW #Professional interactive LinkedIn ad? That is the day I longe for.2 -
I absolutely hate software to the point where I started converting from sysadmin to becoming more like a dev. That way I could just write my own implementations at will. Easier said than done, that's for sure. And it goes both ways.
I think that in order to be a good dev, you need these skills the most:
- Problem solving skills
- Creativity, you're making stuff
- Logical reasoning
- Connecting the dots
- Reading complex documentation
- Breaking down said documentation
- A strong desire to create order and patterns
- ...
If you don't have the above, you may still be able to become a dev.. but it would be harder for sure, and in some cases acceptance will be lower (seriously, learn to Google!)
One thing I don't think you need in development is mathematics. Sure there's a correlation between it and logic reasoning, but you're not solving big mathematical monsters here. At most you'd probably be dealing with arrays and loops (well.. program logic).
Also, written and spoken English! The language of the internet must be known. If it's not your first language, learn it. All the good (and crucial) documentation out there is in English after all.
One final thing would be security in my opinion, since you're releasing your application to the internet and may even run certain services, and deal with a lot of user data. Making those things secure takes some effort and knowledge on security, but it's so worth it. At the most basic level, it requires a certain mindset: "how would I break this thing I just made?"4 -
I am new to open source, so i was trying to solve some issues on an organisation. At first it seemed like what the hack is happening, i was not able to understand the codebase that well but slowly and eventually i get to learn some stuff.
Now, i got stuck at a small problem and to solve that problem it took me a whole complete week. During that phase, i realized some things that i want to share.
As a beginner it was too hectic to find the solution to that problem so i entered that problem on every platform from where there is some chances for reply, and i realized that no one is going to help you out completely and this is the best part, i mean if someone is going to spoon feed you than you won't learn anything. I know that feeling when you are scratching your head and you just want to get out of that mess but you are stuck and there is no one to help you out, believe me just hang in there, there will be some moments when you will realize that there is no more options left and you are done than for sure you will find something which you can try.
So you should also not ask for spoon feed, if you want to learn than fall into many problems as you can.
Best of luck.5 -
Not sure if a rant but.
How many of you guys gets so bored durning meetings on all the none important stuff or not related to you that you just start codeing instead?
I have these hours long meetings with analist that can talk calculations all dat long, how usefull they are, wich analyses you can do for them. I really don't care. Just tell me the formula and I will make it. Do not care whether A is voltage or the amount of pink clouds on sunday.3 -
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6 -
Anyone else feels technology didn't have a major turning point in a while?
I mean, since the late 1980's we had an explosion of technologies:
Gaming consoles
Macintosh
Windows
GNU/Linux
World Wide Web
Smartphones
The rise of advanced web applications and JavaScript
But now? It seems like stagnation for the past 5-10 years or so.
Sure here and there there some nice stuff(like Cryptocurrency, Cloud services, IoT), but nothing that feels completely game-changing.
What do you think will be the next thing that will completely change our lives?18 -
so current elon - Twitter situation is like this:

Twitter - Whaaa!!!

i guess some disaster was expected from this takeover and twitter mgmt throwed themselves on the axe on their own.

Just an update : never fucking install windows 7 on a new desktop without first reading , fucking piece of shit won’t detect my SSD , tried different solution over the Internet to no success, after 3 hours of nerve wrecking debugging I read a post on the Internet that “some”(not sure which) versions of windows just don’t detect an SSD,
Finally done by installing windows 10,
But nooooooo will windows let me die in peace, noooooooo
Every fucking time I restart my PC “ windows is installing updates
I mean fuck you , how fucking many bugs do you squash in a day.
Probably some engineer at Microsoft will be “ oops o dropped a donut on my keyboard, let just press ctrl + z” to undo changes and upload , lol “8 -
@DFox @trogus found a bug- not sure how easy it will be to fix... if you change your username, mentions in rants and comments still have the old username which will be confusing for people trying to figure out who the mention is for.
Is it possible that on editing a username, all mentions in all comments and rants are renamed as well?12 -
An UI guy which actually complimented my will to work with non-dev professions in order to deliver quality features.
Spoiler: I am willing because you are awesome and are not offended in me asking questions outside my area of competence in order to be sure what I do is what you want, so if you happen to read this post kudos on you M. , not on me :) -
On a project that will crash and burn due to a badly projected date given to the business. I'm team lead and the Developement manager. I'm not sure how to save my career from this one. 22 years at this company and this may end my employment.
Can't change the date because the business has had it with deployment failures. Not enough time to do any of the technical debt and I'm not sure one if the issues has a solution.
Time to create a resume I guess. Been a really long time.

Them: I want to be a full stack developer!
Me: Are you sure?
Them: Yeah. absolutely I'll do whatever it takes!
Me: I'll hold you to that, I will piss you off everyday if I have to, to get you learning.
Them: OK, yeah, do it!
Some weeks later
Them: I want to be a front end developer, routing and models are confusing.
Me: I would laugh you out of an interview, keep practicing and just stick with one thing before chasing the next quick reward endeavor until the difficulty curve ramps up and you give up on that too!
Them: ... But it's hard...
Me: So practice, over and over until it sinks in, it's like playing the cello or whatever, just keep practicing!6 -

Can you recommend me any 13 inch notebooks. I want to buy a notebook to use as my main workstation.

Oh, me? I am so excited about all the computing power that's gonna be stolen from people who had updated their Intel CPUs last month.
I dunno what they're up to but I'm sure it's very exciting. I'm lost between Skynet and a one world government cryptocurrency mining they will use the power for.
What do you think?3 -
Fuck, I want to report a bug to KDE, but the more I think of it the more it looks like it's someone who implemented the shit.
It's a feature!
For some fucking reason KDE launcher overrides the commands from one of my programs with its shortcut entries. That's mostly OK.
Now, the problem is that if for some reason the shortcut goes broken, KDE makea sure it is stores in some sort of database, so that even if you delete it from the disk you will still have a broken link overriding the real command.
Until here it's OK. The thing is that, if you delete the shortcut , you will be prompted with a message showing its contents, asking if is it secure to launch the corresponding shortcut?
I'm like, what? Man I deleted the file, there's no shortcut anymore, just let it go and show me the original command.
why would I want you to store previously deleted shortcuts so you may make sure I launch my programs through them?
PS: forgot to tell the whole problem started from a bug in another program, which for some nonsensical reason creates shortcuts calling system commands through itself rather than just calling them out. The result is that once this program is removed all the shortcuts it created no longer work. -

His long do you think it will take for Google to come up with a true replacement for Java. A replacement, not an alternative like Kotlin, but a complete "go f**k yourself, Larry" replacement that anyone can port their Java app over to. On January 1, if you are a for profit, Larry had said if you want to update to the next version and use Java SE to code with, you need a support license. It's a brill move, because Java is everywhere, and at least for a little while, it will generate a respectable profit for Oracle. But I'm sure Google is working on something to stick it to Larry. Wonder if EU competition chief Vestager will threaten am investigation. This should be fun to watch.19

Next time when you are building a website make sure you add some polyfill for the dinosaur people
# We don't officially support any browser that doesn't have
# requestAnimationFrame. But... we had one very nice person
# write in who was using Opera for Linux (latest version was
# released in 2011, what). It doesn't hurt us to polyfill
# here, and if we don't then dinosaur people will just see
# a big blank Trello. -
Management: let's be agile... we can all meet and discuss a project that will take more than likely 6 - 12 months but you guys can estimate and create a road map....
Engineer: I'm not sure you understand agile3 -
Ok ok ok, I will preface this by saying I am still a student so you can assume my complete and utter lack of experience.
There is all this fuss about unit testing and TDD but i still have my doubts about it. How is it that if your code works for certain inputs you can be sure that it will work for whatever can happen after deployment?
I mean, to my understanding testing can assure that some business requirements are cared for but as far as actual code correctness goes I don't see how that is achieved.
As far as i am concerned the closest it comes to complete code correctness is a mathematical type of proof but that should be impossible to be done effectively in an OO language.
How can you be sure that your code is what you think?
(If i have this all wrong please correct me)8 -
Bah! I am sure computers know when you are in a rush. Without fail my computer will run as fast as a snail riding backwards on a turtle every time I am in a rush!3

Next week is super-efficient-daily-standup-and-monday-status-bonanza-meeting week!
The most effecient way is NOT to attend.
If you have no questions/impediments/whatever and you feel like you have velocity > whatever. Be a no-show!
I am SURE you know what is expected from you!
Hey, younglings! Some meetings are _not_ compulsary. No need to be there if you know the drill. If you are in a good work place, everyone will get it. You’re working. This is not always understood by juniors.
But, communicate what your intentions are! Don’t be quite. Communication are difficult. More is better than nothing! Just right is very difficult to obtain and will never be mastered.
And, Windows 11 really sucks… -
15h/day for at least one month.
Manager to someone: How long do you think it will take you to build this?
Someone: Erm... 6 months.
Manager: Fine, I'm pretty sure you can do it in 3 months.
I was invited/forced to join someone's team because he could not do it in 3 months. Neither did we, but we managed to deliver the project in 4 months.
The dickhead manager got a promotion, money prizes etc for burning us out. I can't stand this kind of managers.
Neither I or someone work for that guy anymore.
If a Dev tells you it would deliver something in X believe him, he's telling you the best he can.1 -
C/C++ is so fucking unreadable. Who had the cancer idea to use abbreviations for EVERYTHING?? If a word is longer than 3 chars you can be sure those psychologically unstable devs will use a shortcut.

rollback ==> rb

Current boss is best boss.
Seriously though, he's a great guy. He has a lot of knowledge technology-wise, especially in electronics and will explain things to you without tiring if you don't understand them.
He lets me run my thing which is cool and letting me run too freely/not taking enough time is probably the only thing I'd criticize.
He seems to have a similar mindset to mine which makes it (most times) enjoyable to work with him. I like him personally - though I'm sometimes not sure whether he gets my somewhat weird humour. -
You have a job for 7 days and you will get paid with 1 piece of gold per day. Problem is there's a block of gold made up of 7 pieces, and there is a knife that can cut it only twice. How would you solve this problem? Making sure the employee has the right amount of gold every day!
There are no tricks in the question like buying a new knife or whatever. There is a unique mathematical solution. Go!8 -
I'm not sure which is worse: games that display the "unsaved changes will be lost" warning immediately after you saved, or games that display the warning and there's no obvious way to actually save your game.
Bonus points when there really is a manual save process and you lose all your progress because you thought it auto saved.1 -
Okay ranters, I'm asking for your help.
I'm currently an IT Technician at a facility. I am doing this part time while finishing up my last year of college. I graduate in April of 2017. I just received a job offer to do Web Development part time in the same city. I'm not sure if they will work with my schedule, but they say they will. I will need to learn PHP, because I haven't used it yet, but learning a new language is easy for me. I'm done with most of the difficult classes in my CS program, but I will need some time devoted to study. I'm unsure whether the job is a golden opportunity or if I'm going to screw myself over and be unable to graduate. What do you guys think?8 -
Prof - Students, from now If someone asks you what you did yesterday, explain every minute detail of the task... Use fluent English, use rich vocabulary and MOST IMPORTANTLY -- if you were not able to complete your plans, make sure the other person knows it wasn't UR MISTAKE.... Don't forget to call out things that u asked for but will be delayed due to "unavoidable circumstances".
Make sure you take atleast 2 mins to finish. At the end greet everyone by saying "That's it".

Is it racist to don an Indian accent when an Indian scammer calls you?
I got a local call from South West airlines with a guy that had an Indian accent. Sure, local to my state. Bullshit. I was tired and didn't feel like fucking with him. Probably should have to keep him from scamming someone else.
After the call I started thinking of things to say in and Indian accent. Maybe next time I will mess with them.20 -
Dear Passionate Programmer,
Do you ever wish you chose a different career?
I’m a self taught dev & wanted to make something of what I learned. So I moved from a small town, landed my first tech job (!dev), but the closer I get to my goal the more worried I get.
I’m worried that making my hobby a career will eventually lead me to loathing the one thing I love. And I’m not really sure if I should stay the course or turn around in hopes to save the ship.2 -
Apple is fucking EVERYONE over with Safari 12. They are changing how extensions communicate with the browser, they are calling the new type of extensions Safari App Extensions. It means all current Safari Extensions will not work in Safari 12.
The problem with this is that they require all extensions to have this “backend” written in Swift with a VERY LIMITED API. Maybe you want to close a tab with your extension? “Fuck you, you’re not allowed” are Apple’s response to that. On top of this shit show their documentation is horrendous.
They will kill the extension ecosystem with this new approach, I’m sure of it, because most of the current extensions will not be able to migrate all their features to the new approach. They have built the API around specific extension types, so lots of extensions will simply not work in Safari 12. For distribution they will only allow extensions to be distributed via their new(?) Extension Store where they will review your code, just like an app for App Store. Unless you’re in the Apple Developer Program, which is $99/year.
I do not understand this change and I think it will hurt Apple in the sense that people will use other browsers where extensions are not as strictly controlled. Usually I understand Apple’s changes but this one is just beyond me. 🦆 you 🍎. -
Rant!
When senior dev's or successful startup founders ask me to shift from Open-sourcing my Projects and start making revenue, it gets me very awkward and uncomfortable with myself.
Their argument is Opensource won't feed you unless you're linus torvald, I understand their point however it's irritating that public good isn't a mode of income.
Watching Jobs and Social Networks gets me similarly worked up.People disregarding companions of their journey as they choose money over friendship.
It sure is a cruel world. I'm not sure if i ever will be compatible with it. -
Okay, so there's one guy in my class, which offends me for no reason (I don't give a f about that), and then few minutes later he comes to me and asks "can you make forum/launcher/website". So I say no, because I'm not gonna waste my time for free... So he offends me even more.
When I was telling "Sure, but that will cost you X PLN (Polish Nominals)" - he laughed.
This is really annoying.7 -
My lead: Here's an epic to remove a framework from all our projects. I want you to write every planning step in a document before you make any tickets or do any work.
Me: Okay cool. Before I do that, I'm just gonna finish the removal from the project we're 99% done with so we can remove that from the planning stages. I already did it locally with no issues so we know it's a 1 pointer. That takes us from two dependency graphs down to one which will help immensely in planning.
Lead: No. Don't make any tickets, this is a spike. Just put it in the document so management will know how long we expect the whole thing to take. And make sure you pull in this engineer from a completely different team who has his own tickets and doesn't even know I'm doing this. Make sure you include him on everything.4 -
I think it will be hard for Facebook to recover from this.
It seems like most people can tell that it is toxic.
Of course, a heroin addict would tell you they know heroin is bad, that doesn’t mean they are gonna stop using.
So FB isn’t going anywhere (they already have their needle in a lot of veins), but I’m not sure that even the addicts will see them the same way again.5 -

Hello.
So we have a query inside our company :
We are developers. We are (At least supposed to) logic.
Do you think We developers can influence environment of the planet?
For my self : Not sure, but I would like to believe that more my code is optimized, less resources it will use.1 -
For the new/aspiring developers:
1. If you are still looking to learn more, but you don't know where to go, start brainstorming. Make a list of projects you could make and sort them by difficulty. Put the ones you could do now at the top of the list, and the ones you aren't sure how to do yet, at the bottom of the list. As you go through them, if you want to do something but aren't sure how, just hop onto an irc chat and everyone will be glad to help. As you go through the projects, your logic and program design skills should improve, as well as your knowledge of programming.
2. Put comments in your code. Seriously. If you are working on a project and suddenly stop working on it for a week or more, you will go back to look at that code and be extremely confused. If you are making something open source, its even more important. If people can understand the code, they are more likely to contribute to it.
3. Try not to focus on code for too long. The longer you work, the more tired your brain gets. Eventually you get tired and make really stupid decisions in your code.
4. Don't code while tired (look at #3)
5. If you are writing code as an assignment, make sure to rename all variables to proper names before submitting it. The instructor will likely not be pleased to see variable names with the f-bomb in them. -
I just implemented the cookie popup you wanted me to make. And now you give me a call that your tracking code doesn't appear in the source code?
Oh, but you don't see the cookie popup? You saw it right? So you've already set your cookie permissions, probably not to accept tracking cookies. We can check by... what's that?
If I can make the tracking code appear anyway?

Yeah, sure, no problem, change will be live in five minutes.2 -
Ok so I'm a high school student in grade 11 looking to get a degree in computer sciences. I've done it! I've implemented a new feature. I call it, wheal. its just like the wheel you know and love, in every way, shape, and form. But now, you can take comfort in knowing the state of the art has surely progressed, every time you go to reference, "wheal". This has the added benefit that others who may already be familiar with wheels, will have no trouble at all coming to terms with wheals. Just please, do not make reference to wheels, or your software will not compile. And also be sure to annotate all instances of wheals *wheals are just like wheels!* until all devs have been on-boarded.1

Had a recruiter contact me about a Javascript Developer position. This job was an on-site job 8 hours away and I have a wife who has interviews for a teaching job in the area we currently lived. So she asked if I knew Javascript well, and I said yes for Web Development. She says, "Well I'm sure it's the same for Javascript applications, right?" I said, "I've never created a Javascript application." She says, "I'm sure it will be fine, do you want to come in for an interview today?" That's when I hung up.

I often think of how words are made, how they relate to other words, sometimes I discover interesting relations and etymologies.
Like the word ASSISTANCE. ASS-IS-T[A|E]N[S|C]E. And sure enough we need it most when we are frustrated and our asses are tense.
Coincidence? Idk. But I'll never see this word the same again.
Neither will you.

You suffered a plane crash above the ocean, only you and one other passenger survived. You get washed up on a deserted island.
As you wake up, you realize they woke up before you. You look around and find them sitting on a huge pile of coconuts. While you were unconscious, they went around and collected every single coconut. There is no food on the island other than coconuts.
Of course, you can resort to fishing, but according to statistics 9 out of 10 startup fishermen die of hunger. Coconuts are your only realistic chance of survival.
You ask them "Can you give me some coconuts, please?".
They say "Sure, I can give you some coconuts, if you suck my dick."
Will you suck a coconut man's dick? ©10 -
What I "discovered" recently is, that Android will sometimes update certain apps even if you have auto-update disabled in Play Store.
Yes, just like that. I am not sure what exactly triggers the update, but it is certainly possible.
Just now I have seen that my Netflix app got auto-updated. Which is not a big deal in itself. But taking control out of the user's hands IS a big deal. This needs to stop. ❎10 -
I'm sure everybody here knows that when you lend a usb to somebody, your coworker or friend... THEY NEVER GIVE IT BACK. And you can't ask it back outta nowhere because it will make you seem like a cheapskate. You can't also ask them in a casual conversation too because you are not that close (if it's coworker or a friend you don't talk much to anymore). And even if you ask them they still won't give it back because they usually have the memory of a goldfish. So you go buy a new usb.. knowing that it will also disappear.4

Rant to myself: Don't try to be too smart, you dipshit!
3 weeks ago I packed 2 small changes in one commit, because I was sure (and obviuosly lazy) that no one will ever need these special changes separate.
Guess what happened today? Right, I had to make a change on an old version and needed the one half of this commit.
Cherry-picking ended up in changes I don't need and furthermore some nice collisions.
Thank you very much, past me, for saving 2 minutes 3 weeks ago, which now wastes half an hour. -
Seriously is kivy just lacking documentation on purpose.
You want a tutorial will just look at these apps other people have made I'm sure that will help.
No looking at some game code doesn't give me any ideas on how to create a basic form or a nav drawer.
Seriously are we supposed to fucking guess?
At this point it would be easier to write a gui framework than learn kivy.5 -

coding all day long and then realising that you haven't commented anything...
after all, deciding not to comment your code because you are lazy and sure that you will know what you did in every single line of code when you were writing it... and then 2-3 month later blaming yourself for not commenting when you have to fix bugs or rewrite the code! damn! -
Sure just interrupt me constantly all day, I don't have anything important to do.

I have a huge axe to grind about companies sending me emails I have not consented to. Sometimes they have a checkbox for it, which I always, ALWAYS make sure I do not check. Sometimes they just add you automatically as soon as you enter your email adress.
Sometimes the 'Unsubscribe' link leads to a dead page, or just doesn't work.
And sometimes... They send you a bunch of emails to let you know they will absolutely stop sending you emails 😑
Why. Why? WHY? WHYYYYY?!?!?
Why are so many, even otherwise respected and very customer satisfaction minded companies so disgustingly cavalier or downright dirty about emails?
Even after this whole GDPR thing! -
Imagine being laid off from big companies such as Meta after basically doing jack shit for months if not years.
Employers are aware of the "day in the.." videos and gonna interview u thoroughly in order to make sure that you are actually competent.
I doubt many of the laid off bunch (especially the incompetent ones) will get an easy pass.7 -
I am sick of Android cave dwellers go outside everytime iOs released and make their old tired “inNOvatIon” joke.
Apple does not say we brought these things first, so there is no base for a joke even. But when Apple does, you can be sure it will be far more perfect than your average Android phone has, or even top end ones.11 -

Need an advice on what android phone to buy.
I am looking for decent cpu (snapdragon preferribly), decent storage, screen size around 5.5 inch and not too big. A decent battery life. Fingerprint/faceid sensor is a must. Ram at least 4gb.
I am really interested in samsung s10 however they ship s10 devices with snapdragon only to usa and china as far as I know. So In Europe s10 is being sold with exynos cpu which I heard is laggy.
Then I was wondering wether to get a Pixel 4, however I dont like that the battery is only 2800mAh so Im not sure if that will be enough. I looked at Pixel 3a bet then I'm not sure wether 4gb ram will be enough?
Any ideas? Can you tell me about your devices that you are using?9 -

Okay, sure. This may happen to indie stuff etc.
But we are talking about bigass company thats fucking trying to assasinate steam (and so far kindda fails). You dont want to show customers error messages, sure, but at least, if you do it, and you tell your customer to send email to admin, make fucking sure that you provide an actually fucking working email. No wonder they cant conquer steam. And thats positive side3 -

Unreal Engine 4 has the worst for sure. And i mean official docs as well as forums.
Answers to most questions tend to kind of boil down to "it's easy!".
As in, that's the only thing the answer will tell you. that it's easy to do. And by that implication, they don't actually need to tell you how to do it.
Or something like "it's easy, just turn this setting on/off".
Nobody will tell you, though, which tab in what window opened by which tiny button in a property grid in a window opened by which dropdown submenu under which button in what toolwindow to find that option.
Second place in the list of worst is shaders: ShaderLab/HLSL. Because they at least don't pretend that it's easy and that they're giving you answers, they usually just don't exist. -
I'm asked by a friend (writer)

UNOFFICIAL DEVRANT CLONE JAM - LAST VOTING DAY
4 people have cast their votes on devRant clones with 19 points for @retoor and 3 for @SidTheITGuy. It's a huge rift, which will be hard to clamp by 12:00 UTC!
Finnegan (by @retoor): https://devrant.com/rants/9946268
ragedev (by @SidTheITGuy): https://devrant.com/rants/9946238
Despite the obviousness and overall weirdness of the end product chosen for this hackathon, I want you to give your feedback to others who want to see the best of devRant, but somewhere else. What do you think a serious devRant alternative should have and what are expectations for the design?
I'm sure all these topics will keep reappearing, so maybe this rant can be used to gather all the thoughts in one place before spreading them around.1 -
Just a friendly note: If you use the same technique as I i.e. local GIT repositories backed up on cloud, ALWAYS make sure there is still at least as much free space as the largest repo shallow clone.
It may happen that some really really archaic "commits" will disappear and git won't work as usual, but mostly you'll have an access to the branches, which you can diff against the master and make patches. Then just clone, make branches from patches and code happily ever after.
Also... you really really shouldn't push when you discover(git fsck --all) such an issue in your local repo, although I think git won't even allow you to do so. -
dumb mistake on my part. so when accessing an AWS S3 store via the Java SDK, make sure you don't use the virtual-hosted URL to connect and to list objects in a bucket. you will pull your hair out when you see puts and gets work but list bucket doesn't. a major hint is if your put/get/delete calls don't accept the bucket name but instead accept the top level prefix, then you're doing it wrong :/
-
I'm sure it already happened to you :

Me : I did my best and the feature is ready !
*Fortunately no one will check the svn logs :D*2 -
Any advice what you guys consider when changing jobs?
I don't like my current job anymore as it is very chaotic, unstructured and lots of people are leaving. However, people think highly of me and I could get a good salary while having an easy+ safe job. With homeoffice allowed, flexible timemanagement...
Now I got this new offer and it is in a field that is more interesting for me but they are only offering the same salary as I have now, without getting compensation for overtime. Homeoffice will be okay but only after 6 months of probation. I only got to know the CEO and he seems to be cool, but i worry that i might have to work overtime regularly. Also I dont know for sure if the processes will actually be better than in my current workplace. I am still in the beginning of my career so i think i shouldnt stay in the current company for too long but of course i dont want to end up in a place that is worse.
How do you guys make sure you are moving to a better place?2 -
Devs are divided on gitlab blunder, some appreciate their honesty and transparency while other are either cursing them or grateful that they didn't use it. But think like this :
You own a MacBook and you love it like your baby, if someone drops it, there is good probability it won't break but it will sure give you a fucking heart attack. You won't ever let that person touch your MacBook.
Gitlab just did that. They scared the hell out of the developers.
I hope everyone learns from this and it doesn't happen to anyone in future.4 -
Have you ever tried, getting a free web server from portal.azure.com, with your university account? It took me 2 seperate accounts, 5 hours and lots and lots of different services to manage it. I am sure now, that I will use Linux later on.4

Yeah sure it is totally the fault of framework X being less popular than framework Y. That is the reason why you don't find devs for framework X.
The low pay and bad organisation has nothing to do with this. Yes it is probably the best idea to take the 4 years of work in X and continue it in Y. The devs will fight for a job where an Y app is integrated into an X app... -
Am I the only one that feels like the development and software engineering will loose the high paying benefit soon? Remote work normalised hiring developers from farther away. I've been approached by quite a few recruiters that want to hire from much farther away then usual. It seems like only a question of time untill most of the things will be outsourced to third world countries where developers get paid basically nothing. Sure they were usually a worse choice in the past, but it always gets better with time. I'm sure that there are a lot of vry smart wngineers there. Why pay your developer 50-90k/year when you can pay 10k/yr for two developers in India?
We're also automating ourselves out of jobs with all these no code platforms. Thoughts?8 -

I get a call asking how I would handle a problem using the system from one of the Project Managers.
I told him that with very little information, the system is designed to do 80% of what he wanted automatically and walk you through the steps to make sure him and his whole team know what's going on during the process.
He says back, honestly I don't want to learn that, I'm just gonna use excel and here's why
**hang up phone**
It's a walk through that does 80% of the work automatically that will take you days... What is there to learn? -

This is a Rave, as opposed to a Rant. Working with a team that will actually test the backout scripts, and migrate twice in QA in order to make sure everything works. This is refreshing, because most teams don't test their backout, and you really are in trouble if your migration fails, and your backout doesn't work.

Ahh yes. Thank you professor for assigning me a research topic on a framework that hasn’t been updated since 2016. I’m sure it will work perfectly fine. (It doesn’t)1

All programming blogs/bloggers are one of three types:
1. Actually writing to help people learn the thing they have gained knowledge in - they write clearly, succinctly.
2. Writing purely to impress colleagues and lessers of their deep knowledge that their brilliant minds have grokked, and instead of being at the top of the knowledge hierarchy alone, they will impart their wizardry onto you, but not really, because they will speak as abstractly as the subject matter or more so, maximize use of esoteric language, and end up providing little to no value to you. but they sure look smart!
3. some weird third type where they dont really fit into either of the first two somehow; just kind of like to hear themselves talk...er.. see themselves write3 -
Q: Why is windows better than linux?
A: Cos when you download zoom on windows, you can be pretty darn sure that it will work without you having to debug stupid permission issues. Linux would be dead if web browsers weren't a thing.19 -
I've spent the whole day writing editing a proposal a partner sent as docx. I've tested out writing revisions and saved the file to be sure, and I could re-open it just fine. After some hours, I've sent the file to the partner and he said he couldn't open it. Looks like Libreoffice broke the document.xml file beyond repair when I edited my last comments. Will need to work until midnight because this piece of shit software is incapable of handling the basic document structure it is written for. IF YOU SUPPORT DOCX FILES HOW ABOUT YOUR RELEASE VERSIONS DONT LEAVE BROKEN CORRUPTED MESSES YOU PIECE OF SHIT. HOW MANY HOURS DO YOU THINK HAVE YOU COLLECTIVELY WASTED??1

Lately I am working using icestorm!
I know very few people know it, mainly beacuse not a lot of us works with FPGAs.
It is foundamental for the open source scene because is the only FOSS that gives you the ability to "compile" for FPGAs, otherwise you would have to use some proprietary tool.
People are building lot of things on top of that, and I hope more people start workin with FPGAs: dealing with them is still quite hard, especially if compared with MCU programming.
I am sure that in very few years we will see something very interesting in that field.4 -
I am thinking of how I can make data upload reliable. I am sure that I am making it more complex as it could be and I need some pointer.
My goal is to have a pause/resume feature in file uploading.
Here is how it would work.
In order to start uploading , you give the server
1) File Name
2) Folder path you want to upload it to
3) Checksum of the file
Here the server will check whether you can upload it to a folder, whether the file have been previously uploaded (by file name and checksum)
If you could actually upload to the folder , server will return "unique file token" , "folder path" , "unique byte token". Let call it init_upload().
The client will use "unique file token" (to identify the file) , folder path (to know where to upload it to) , "unique byte token" and byte[] (data which to actually upload). Let call this operation data_upload().
If the operation is actually complete , server will return new "unique byte token"
Internally it will actually work like this.Let say we want to upload "file.mp3", when the client call init_upload() it will create
file.mp3 and unique_byte_token.file.mp3.
When the client upload data first time , it will append data to unique_byte_token.file.mp3.
When the client upload data second time , it will check whether the "byte token" that client put is the same as previous "unique_byte_token". If it is same ,
1) we move the data from unique_byte_token.file.mp3 to file.mp3
2) Delete unique_byte_token.file.mp3
3) Create new unique_byte_token.file.mp3
4) Append data to unique_byte_token.file.mp3
The reason I am using "byte token" is because I want to check whether previous upload is actually success.
Let say we need to call 50 part of data_upload() will put 49 part to file.mp3 and 1 part to byte_token.file.mp3.
Finally the client need to call data_upload_complete() which will
1) Put reminding 1 part to file.mp3
2) Remove byte_token.file.mp3 as cleanup6 -
"If a feature or product were legitimately easy the user would not be writing in to support about how stuck they are. Sure, some percentage of users will find questions to ask about any interface. But do you want to start the conversation by assuming the user falls into that percentage? You venture to learn much more if you assume the software is wrong, not the user." - Andrew Spittle

@dfox is it a known issue to have crashes on iOS when visiting the notifications tab?
If not here’s what I can gather: When opening the notifications menu, app will crash after the devRant logo wobbles 3-4 times. After reopening the app and repeating the process about 3-5 times, the app will load into the notifications menu. However, when tapping on any individual notification, it will often crash after the same 3-4 wobbles of the devRant logo.
Now, I’m not a mobile developer (Nor a react developer, if you guys are using react) but here’s some things that I would think might cause this:
- An unhandled exception?
- If you use multiple server instances, they may be out of sync?
Not sure what it could be tbh. But I hope this helps, keep up the great work!7 -
Is it more morally correct to just kill yourself and let everyone know or leave a note saying you decided to move to this country and you will never come back and then die in a way and place you are sure no one can find your body and know what happened to you?32

I think I found a way to audit college courses without paying for them. Find someone that is taking the courses and get paid doing their homework (for cheap/free). Make sure they take good notes and provide access to all materials. Do their homework of course. If taken to the extreme you could have a CS/CE/Math background while possibly making money on the deal. Any time you want to take a course you advert that you will do the homework. You could even wrangle the victim to record the lectures so you can reference as needed.
At the end you won't have a degree, but will be able to do everything the degree demands.
Obviously there are issues with this, one being a moral issue.4 -
I know it will be disturbing for a few of you, but it has to be said...
I'm not sure how I need to say this, but...
but...
GOD DAMN FUCK YOU ARDUINO YOU STUPID LITTLE FUCKER WHY DOES MY CODE NOT WORK AFTER HOURS OF REASONABLE DEBUGGING FUCKING FUCK YOU IT DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!2 -
Oh damn!
I have been tired of everything for a couple of years and thought it is temporary and it will go away. But today I discovered there is a thing called Chronic fatigue syndrome.
Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Fellow developers, if you are experiencing similar symptoms mentioned in the wiki, make sure you visit a doctor; trust me, this permanent state of fatigue will not go away.
I just made an appointment to doctor and urge you to do the same!1 -
I probably got an internship for this summer and I'm really really excited for it.
However, I've juste finished my first year of CS and it's my first internship and it makes me really scared that I'll be unable to do anything. Like sure I know OOP and how to code, but what will I do in a business?
Do you have any tips or so? It would help me a lot, I really want to do it well.3 -
Question.
If you're working remotely- like a whole other country/continent- do you have to give taxes for the country the company is in?
Context. Got a "job". Not sure if I'll take it full time but for now I will be getting some backpay so I want to know everything before deciding and planning
Right now in my country I don't have to pay taxes so I want to know if that still stands3 -
Don't fall into frivolous arguments about tabs/spaces or brace style. It doesn't matter. But please make sure your code is at least formatted in a *consistent* manner - everyone else that reads your code will thank you.1

What I tell every Admin Padawan and I hope it will help you, too...
---
Whatever you do on any system, always make sure you know and are able to revert your changes so you can return to the last working system state.
---
It is basically somewhat similar to "always have a backup". But it goes much further in my opinion because it also implies that you know for certain that a recovery works as well since:
"Nobody wants backup, everybody wants recovery" -
https://learnbchs.org - The web framework consisting of OpenBSD, C, httpd and SQLite.
What do you think? Not sure if I should call C-webdevs insane or genius (maybe both).
I think the code will either end up very secure or with more severe bugs than any PHP website ever had. Please talk me out of trying it.7 -
It's something that comes with practice, but in general it's much better to overestimate than underestimate.
- Always take your time. Don't be rushed into plucking a number out of thin air.
- Break the task down into really small, atomic chunks.
- Each of those chunks will take at least twice as long as you think it does - nothing goes to plan 100% the first time!
- Make sure you add contingency at the end. -
6 hours of manually testing a new library will save you 5 min of reading the documentation for sure!1

Wrote some awesome methods in my application which writes products and their variations directly to SQL for a WooCommerce shop, avoiding uploading any images and constant handshakes for thousands of API calls for each product.
Been heavily criticised for it though as bad practice and to just use the API. I say fuck you, it's lightning fast and works well. Sure the API spec could change in a year but these methods will scale well.
Who agrees? -
To the slackers on this team - fuck you all.
I know you don’t work during the day. I’m either getting another job or moving into management, and god help you if either happens. Your current manager has been watching you like a hawk, but he’s scared of attrition. But if his manager pushes him on it he’ll PIP you all. He hates you too.
If I get a new job - our manager’s manager will know, our manager will get pressure to PIP you, and you’ll endure months of hell while every stakeholder with deadlines realizes they can tighten the screws on you and if you don’t respond well you’ll be seen as even bigger fuckups.
If I move into management - PIPs incoming. You’ve made my life hell. But I’m going to make sure you’re stuck in this hell with me for as long as possible. That transfer you wanted? Fuck no, you will maintain this legacy system under increasingly unreasonable deadlines until you quit. Should’ve done your work back when there was still time. And until you quit, it will be torture. I plan on asking for constant status updates that are sure to break your flow. And when you quit - better leave us off those references.
Fuck you. The rest of the team is working overtime because of your shitty personality. I know you like this job - get ready to lose it and watch everyone who’s been chomping at the bit to make your life miserable take swings at you.7 -
Is JavaScript the Tower of Babel? What will be the long term effects of the explosion of new frameworks. I liked it when you could use a backend server side language and had JavaScript as the special sauce that could do what the backend could not do. I am sure I will be sent to hell for blaspheming the hot, new js frameworks. Oh well better to burn out than fade away.

I am in final year in computer science and i have to do a license. I know for sure it will be something about networking( not programming)(I am junior sysadmin in a company, i told you that so you can make an idea about the field). I did not find any great idea until now. Can you help me with some ideas? Thank you.

Motherfucking colspan broke my damn breaks my damn parser.
Which unnecessary, inferior lifeform just adds this shit occasionally and without patterns.
If I mtet that person I'll make sure it's ass will have a colspan="minutes of my life wasted because of you"

I hate using fpdf and mpdf.
I'm sure the people working on them are great, pretty sure they have helped a lot of people, me included.
But boy do I hate not being able to write my html in peace only to find out the style I want to apply isn't supported within a table
It's making me want to jump out the window.
Anyway, I hope you whoever is reading this had a nice day, and if you didn't, you will tomorrow, you got this!1 -

I am going to my first hackathon in 2 weeks and am kind of nervous. I don't know anyone and don't have a team. I was wandering if it is a requirement to work on a project? There will be a lot of workshops and I am sure I will learn a lot even without working on a project.
If you could give me some hints on what I can expect that would be really helpful. -
Manager: Can we achieve X?
Dev: We can do with Y. But with the time that you are allocating it is difficult to complete Y.
Manager: Can we do a temporary fix?
Dev: Sure. We can do Z. But we need to prioritise Y in the next sprint else Z will cause issues in the long run.
Manager: Sure
After many next sprints,.......
Manager: Hey, Z is causing us issues regularly. Can we do something about it.
Dev: We still can do Y.
Manager: Come up with document on the implementation. We'll implement it.
Dev: Sure. Will do.2
