Git makes it easy to search through historical changes they said. Git is amazing when working in teams they said.
It sure is.
If your coworkers do not commit every time they burp or fart, do not use "🚀" or "✨" or "fix" as a commit message, and do not push all their shitty experimental broken branches without cleaning up.
I'm surprised there are no piles of fecal matter behind their desk chairs.19 -
Turns out, double tapping the rant too fast will not ++ it, but open it (sometimes twice even).
Not certain if it's a bug or just my shitty touchscreen, but make sure you tap more slowly if you have similar problems.5 -
Not sure if it just doesn't have the right character encoding scheme, or if my existence is being questioned...4
-
I've just googled
"How to kill a demonized puma"
And now I'm not sure anymore if I'm a developer or a wizard4 -
At least it wasn't Disney who acquired GitHub. Not sure if the world is ready for GitHub branded tampons yet.7
-
I'm not sure if my in-laws know me really well, or if they are secretly plugged into Github and are making a comment on my code.4
-
You all, something is wrong. No one has pissed me off at work recently (other than boss, but he does that by existing). I'm not sure if they've all learned, or if shit is about to hit the fan.10

Not sure if it was the missing spaces in the title, the text lingo and bad grammar in the description, or the clickbait-style graphic but I AM SOLD.5
-
So I had another seizure last night... (yea not fun), it's been awhile and yesterday's, I have no recollection of what happened.
But today, what do I do? Make sure I can still read and code :)
Honestly, if I forget how to code, not sure what I would do.....
Oh and I just wrote this and somewhat related:

First day on new job. Hardware guy comes to my office, says "Hi, here is your computer" (no eye contact) and leaves a pile of boxes on the floor.
A few hours later I finished building the computer from scratch lol.
Not sure if it was some kind of test or just him being weird 😂3 -
I like when a recruiter calls, decides you're not experienced enough for the role they called for, and immediately ask if you know someone who is. Sure, bro, let me help do your job for you.4

Not sure if posted before, but I found this useful tool, good enough to leave simple 'to do' directly on the server

So as most of you know I was inspired to create a Minesweeper that allows continuing after you hit a mine.
Not sure if such a version existed before but... if it doesn't now it does.

Sorry @linuxxx Windows only... don't feel like learning Electron ATM or JavaFX... honestly I just wanted the games to continue after hitting a mine.18 -
I think I once saw Richard Stallman in a subway in New York, but I'm still not sure if it really was him or just another hobo.
I wanted to go up to him and ask, but was too scared that I might offend him if it _was_ him or get attacked by a hobo if not.5 -
To all C# devs out there who also write some js, I'm not sure if y'all know about linq.js, but the thing is amazing. If someone already uses it I'd like to know if there are any reasons not to use or if there is a better similar library.18

Um.. yea I've published a GDPR contact email on our website, for issues about our privacy policy. Not sure if you Chinese marketing fucks behind the GFW know what this regulation is about though. I'm not interested in your stupid moulds.
Perhaps that firewall of China could use some further tightening... 😒4 -
I asked my manager for a compensation adjustment today since my peers at the same tenure and experience as me were making $30,000 more than me. They said no since I haven't worked on any big projects yet and the projects that were big enough, I didn't do it by myself so they don't count.
I'm not sure if they know how software teams work... I'm pretty sure we make software for TEAMs...6 -
Just found old logs I had with an ex-client, pre-devrant:
"What if we add the newsletter checkbox to the login, so each time a user logs in, he has to uncheck it, or else he will be subscribed to our newsletter?"
Not sure if that even needs a comment, I am speechless that was an actual suggestion, ever.1 -
2 extra screens on the go for a laptop?
Seems a little bulky.
but for $400 I'm not sure if the price is right.12 -
After one year of learning to code I am still not sure if I am an adequate programmer or a really effective Google user...5

The other day when I visited a local cafe, I noticed that the bartender's jukebox PC type of thing has Windows XP on it. Not sure if I should visit that cafe any more 🤔13

I’m doing my friend website css, not only it’s hard but I spend like 1 hour trying to figure out why I could use png image but jpg image couldn’t show up. Then I just convert the jpg to png. Not sure if this gonna affect the site on the future
I hope not6 -
Not sure if those are real song names or Spotify is trolling me when I try to trigger a "no results" UI in my app.6
-
Someone I know recommended me to Google... Not sure if I'm excited or scared if they call.
Not getting my hopes up though. 👀9 -
!rant, just wanted to express my excitement to someone
Not sure if this counts but technically I got my first freelance dev job designing an app for a club/small business at school. I have a lot to learn still but I'm really happy about the opportunity3 -
I'M TIRED OF HEARING THAT DEVELOPMENT IS NOT A CREATIVE FIELD! Creativity is emerging new ideas from non-existent ones. It is not confined to pretty designs or well-written copy. Sure, devs are logical problem solvers – but not a single dev will solve those problems the same way. Code is like the paint on our dark-themed canvases and you can see yourself out if you think devs are just robotic coding machines8
-
PO: "I'll email you the details."
Me: Sure, I'll start with what I have right now.
I start coding, 7 hours later I got something working, not sure if it's what he wants.
Still no email.
I might have a followup rant tomorrow when he tells me it's not what he wanted at all.3 -
!rant
Since I joined DevRant my productivity went down...
Well... Im not sure if I should be happy or sad about it.7 -
I've found that suddenly and infrequently, for the past week or so, letters are missing from typed code, and I have to go back and fix them.
Now that is not super weird I guess, but as someone who tends to type quite accurately, and uses a high end mechanical keyboard...
I'm just wondering if the keyboard is broken, or if it's a brain tumor.
I've tried to test it, but every time a letter is missing I'm not actually completely sure I hit that key...
And considering the price of the keyboard, I'm also not completely sure which cause I prefer.11 -
Installed Elementary on an old machine. Wouldn't boot. Started over fresh, worked the second time, did nothing different. It's pretty, but not sure if I'll keep it.15
-
So fed up with this "Linux is hard to handle"-bull. If you want to do things the hard way, sure. But if you install a normal distribution like Ubuntu it's as close to "just works" as I have seen. Sure if you want to compile everything yourself into your perfect system it can be hard, but on windows or mac that's not hard, it's impossible.13
-
I'm not really keen in relying too much on JavaScript to render a properly functioning web page. HTML and CSS is now than good enough for it nowadays.
But if due to technical limitations, i have to use JavaScript, I make sure to not use jquery.
I don't like jquery.13 -
Reading books, not sure if you can even call it a non-dev activity since it is essential in my opinion but reading improves my programming skills everyday!
-
Not sure why non tech people has no common sense. When they saw pokemon go became a hit they say they want to develop something like that. Wtf man, If I can develop that why do u think I need to work for you?4
-
The moment when you stayed up far too late setting up a new OS for your PC, stood up too late, it's now 15:09, and you're not sure if you're eating breakfast, lunch or dinner right now

If your JavaScript and css is not loading on your server, make sure your folder and files have the right permissions.
Two days of running around like a headless chicken because I'm retarded... 😫4 -
Not sure if this counts as a dumb request but:
Customer- There are too many tasks, we need a 'SELECT ALL' button to complete everything easily
Me- sure that's easy to add
(After addition)
Customer- people are completing the tasks too fast! We need to get rid of the select all !
Ugh5 -
So I just created a function called GetMinutesFromMinutes... It actually makes sense and I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse :)12

My Neighbors still have written "Merry X mas" on their window... I am not sure if they're dead or just using IE

When you start inspecting code of the page you are using, and you find something like this...

Yesterday
Boss: Can you export the foo data and send it to me?
Me: Sure
Me (later): Ok, just shared foo.csv with you. It should have everything you need, just let me know if you need the bar data.
Boss: OK, thanks.
Today
Boss: Did you get the foo data exported?
Me: Yes, I shared that with you yesterday
Boss: What did you name it?
This is all in a chat, by the way, not in person. Scrolling for 1.5 seconds reveals all the relevant information.
How do I respond in a way that is not sarcastic and does not belittle my boss? I'm not sure it's even possible.2 -
The company I work for insists on having windows on every work laptop although the work I do doesn't require windows. I bought a new hdd, replaced the old one and installed gentoo. Not sure if they could fire me if they found out, however my productivity increased from the first day on.16
-
This occurred on a company wide chat
Developer: Getting an error insufficient space on disk when uploading to server, any clues?
CTO: Let me Google the error a second.
Not sure if he was joking...3 -
I have not researched it so I'm not sure if this is a widely known thing but I figured out a sort of hacky way to get a max integer value:
-Declare an unsigned int.
-Subtract 1
-Divide 2
That is your max signed int value
int main(){
unsigned int a = 0;
a--;
std::cout << a / 2 << std::endl;
}7 -
Sure Amazon, 0.02$/GB * 0.000120 GB = 0.01$, not 0.0000024$, sure, that's right.
0.05$ for what amounts to less than 2MB of data transfer in total (there's two more lines like that in the bill).
Eat a bag of dicks.
Free tier my ass, if I wanted to spend money I'd rather use Azure.3 -
Knockout JS.
I am not sure if the library itself is so bad or the code which I was working on was ugly. But since then I avoid anything that is related to knockout js.10 -
Not sure if this is a dumb or genius way to debug 🤣... Nevertheless, I find it awesome!

PM sends email to development team with the whole management team in cc.

I've been working late nights for so long that falling asleep when it's still dark is an achievement for me. So is waking up when it's still morning.1

How hard was the transfer from Apache to Nginx server for you? I'm not quite sure if I should put Nginx on my to-learn-list.7

So I installed Nougat yesterday on my OPO as some apps n Google seem to not like CM 13...
It runs so fast and smooth... Not sure why but kinda feels like I got a new phone 😄😄
Wonder what it'll be like if I ever get to upgrade to Oreo... 🤔🤔🤔🤔
And it seems it likes attracting cats14 -
Does anybody out there actually really love their job? Because I do. I'm not sure if it's just me or that my job is actually great, but my coworkers are respectful, my boss lets me have control over each project's pace, I get to write tests and invest in refactoring, and I make good money doing it.
Is this just me?7 -
When you used hours to find an error, and then it dissapears after restarting Visual Studio.. Not sure if i should laugh or cry4

Forget mobile first... it's offline first now

So my time saver automation can not be used because automation is not reliable.
Yeah sure make me extract data manually from 800 urls by hand and see if there is no human error.

Is there a difference between vscode and visual studio?
Or are they two names for the same thing?
Either way, do you guys like it/them?
I want to try out vscode but am not sure if I should.10 -

When a manager asks if you can implement a feature (their are legitimately not sure if it is even possible) and you say yes and they say, "Good, 'cause I already assured the client that we would provide it on the next release"

So my boss yells at me for texting right after she finished her text. Not sure if I wanna throw back the sass at her.6

Make sure to keep your clients regular... Cause if they do not have their daily shits, it will migrate to their brain, and a shitty idea will spawn... Avoid having a new shit offspring, keep clients regular...5

Just discover that I can send "echo bomb" to one of my fellow students trough SSH with the write command.
Then I discover the wall command to send messages to every connected user. Not sure if I am brave enough or if I am going to be banned from our network if I do that 😅5 -
Not sure if Google Assistant is playing dumb so it can cheat me out of a point or is actually dumb :)
Considering how well it works otherwise I'd say it's cheating :)3 -
When you hear the data engineers talk about ambari, storm, sqoop, kafka & phoenix and you are not sure if they are talking about frameworks or pokemons..2

Client: Everything looks wrong. If it's not working it should say 'coming soon'

Client: Put coming soon up please1 -

Dear recruiter,
Open space is not a perk.
If someone tells you they want remote, not bit of remote or any other indication,
Why would you ask how much remote is ok?
If someone tells you "i want open space" would you ask "how much open space? Like half office?" No, you wouldn't.
But for sure, what is not acceptable when someone tells you they want remote is answering "that's a shame" if you want to get a developer a job, work, if you want to get cash because of a developer then do that. -
Just came across this in a website project of my company.... and it goes on for about 5 times of that. But it's not in the html code, guess it comes from some js framework. Not sure if bug in framework or bad code in website.8
-
Not sure if this is progress or what... But the people who asked me to fix their laptops or build their website now want me to help them out in starting their very own crypto currency.7

How about "nope"?
I have never been to an interview.
I would like to work in an IT company to get money(such wow) besides of my college time.
The thing is that... well... I'm not really sure if I can do this since I have 0 experience with interviews. I can not imagine the situation :)9 -
https://github.com/jaggy/ideas
I've decided to open source some of my ideas that's stuck in my notes app.
Not really sure if it's useful or not but feel free to suggest some or comment on those ideas.2 -
Why does everyone screenshot a Tweet, instead of using a perfectly good app 'Tweet2Pic' being available on Play Store.
P.S: I am the dev, shamelessly promoting my app. I am not sure if I can share links here 😅3 -
This is my first time working with Android Studio and I'm not sure if it's really building my project or just got stuck...
It's been over an hour and I'm still waiting.6 -
Started working on my old idea about contact app... Looking for some good name... And found an app having 30% common features I was thinking about. :(
Not sure if taking patent is a good idea on rest of the features.6 -
Not sure if this has been posted here already but if you want to troll someone, replace all the semicolons in their code with the Greek question mark ( ; ) and see how long it takes them to figure out the problem6

Hmm. Not sure if this was the best screenshot to show off Android 7's (Nougat) improved Doze mode. 95% = 59mins2

I’m not sure if I like my software development teacher using my code for examples to show the other students. Sometimes I get the “oh that’s nice” and other times I get the death stare”🤔8

!Rant
I was just listening to a podcast and they mentioned patreon. Not sure if you two, @dfox and @trogus, thought about creating a patreon page. I would definitely support you guys for the work and time you two put into devrant. Would be awesome to have some method to tip you guys some dollar for a tea ;)2 -
Worked with a team of interns learning Swift. They had a really tight deadline, so they decided if they were not sure what the app should do if a nil showed up, they would just force unwrap and let it crash.
-
I have a Mac at work right now, and if/when it putters out, I would be fine with another, but not if it's the touch bar variety. In that case, I'll ask for a surface or a latitude(the options the company offers to the MacBook) and just hijack Linux onto it. I won't even ask if I can, because I'm sure the answer will be no.7
-
Im putting together a new stack (i do it every 8-10 months). Queue the dramatic music, its not java this time. So far i got Python Flask and maybe React but im not sure yet. Question is, what db should i use? Ill probably go for a json one, thinking about rethinkdb for now, but if anyone has a better idea, please share.17

Not sure if I love or hate haskell... It's awesome, but then again the syntax is so fucking confusing...6
-
So I've recently become interim sys admin at my current job.
I'm not sure if I'm doing things right but...hey, I switched the entire office to Linux so that counts for something right?3 -
I don't know if some people are incompetent or just simply dumb.
If you're not sure what to do, ask.
If every guideline for each workflow has been uploaded, read and watch.
Don't wait until the very last minute.
Don't even act innocent when I ask and you don't even know wtf I'm talking about.
Don't "disappear" and come back when the deadline is in few days.
Just stop torturing me with your horrible work ethics.3 -
Mac guy here.
Thinking about buying the funniest, most gigantic headphones just so people realize to leave me the fuck alone.
Not sure if they just don’t see my earbuds or if they just don’t care.7 -
Not really in work as a job, these people inspired me rather in lifestyle and thinking: (these are not quotes!!)
Richard Stallman - you can't be sure the program isn't harmful unless you see and understand the code.
Linus Torvalds - doesn't matter if you like the person or not, let the code speak for him/her.
Raymond Hettinger - there are both stupid and smart people. It doesn't matter. What matters is asking the right questions and providing clean and explaining answers. -
Anyone else get neck pains due to sitting at a computer all the time? Not sure whether it is that, or if I have not been sleeping properly 😟15
-
@DFox @trogus found a bug- not sure how easy it will be to fix... if you change your username, mentions in rants and comments still have the old username which will be confusing for people trying to figure out who the mention is for.
Is it possible that on editing a username, all mentions in all comments and rants are renamed as well?12 -
Hey everyone. Not sure if we're allowed to do this or not. If not, whoops sorry. Anyway, I'm Vylcas. New to DevRant and developing things as a whole. Currently know html, css, and python. Trying to get better and figure out which direction to go. Hope DevRant has some chill people for something with an emphasis on ranting. Really excited to start using this app to see whats out there. Guess thats all. Have a nice day!5

Content strategy expert: How long would it take to program an SVG animation intro video
Me: I'm not sure I've never programmed one before.(still teaching myself)
Content expert: iS it even possible?
Me: yeah all things are possible in programming ;)
Content expert: so then how long would it take
Me: no.
Content expert: but wouldn't it be easier if...
Me: no, go away2 -
What's the best dev-related book you ever read?
I've sure I'm forgetting some, but I'll go with "Don't Make Me Think".
Thought I might see if there's anything intriguing I've not come across yet.4 -
We are switching to an infinite scroll mode for our app. I told the backend dev in my project (we're just 2 people) I need an API to get more than one post at once.
He told me to use a loop to call the old URL 15 times.

I'm not sure if I really should have celebrated 1024++ by buying myself a desktop PC.
But I really prefer it over any kind of laptop. 😸2 -
An incomplete list of 2018 personal dev goals:
* do more web development (It's fun. In a crude way.)
* finish the smart lamp I started building in 2016 ...
* fix up more electronic devices while learning their inner workings
* learn Python and some other language
* get myself a blog again
* get that testautomation thing which is haunting me in my dreams already to production
* be more relaxed
* do some home automation while not cursing all that much -
So udemy just changed their logo... I'm not sure if I'm a fan of it...
In all honesty, does changing a logo really change anything that much? I mean why change a logo?

So I guess, I'm a technical recruiter, part of the screening process, now, for Java applicants. Yay or Nay? I'm not sure if I should be happy or not, because I hate Java and Oracle

Need confirmation:
A friend message me (this) saying that “it came from Mark Zuckerberg himself and facebook will...” blah blah and then another friend asked me if this is for real.
Let me know your thoughts on this, because I’m not really sure if I should resend it as well17 -
Do you use personal assistants for home automation? If yes, what's your setup?
I'm thinking about setting up a RPi/similar with Jasper and bundling it up with Home Assistant, however, I'm not sure about the audio hardware yet.3 -
Ok so I'm a high school student in grade 11 looking to get a degree in computer sciences. I looked at the requirements for big Universitys in Canada and they say you only NEED calculous and vectors and no sciences. I wasn't sure if not taking sciences will impact my acceptance probability or if any of you got accepted to universities without highschool science.6

Not sure if it is a rant or not but I'm getting worried about Apple... Two days passed uploaded a new update multiple times and all ended on the first try 😨
Usually it takes many tries for it to be uploaded 😨
On top of that, iTunesConnect is faster and no longer stuck at loading when token expires 😨
I hope I'm not dreaming 😅5 -
Always thought a "scrolling distance"-counter would be neat on Facebook, so that people can realize how much scrolling they do. Not sure if I want that on devRant, though... 8)5

If by some cruel act you're forced into working on a live environment, just make sure you're absolutely sure that your test code is definitely the code that's going to run... Not some horrible script that rolls back the clients database a year ;)

On a project that will crash and burn due to a badly projected date given to the business. I'm team lead and the Developement manager. I'm not sure how to save my career from this one. 22 years at this company and this may end my employment.
Can't change the date because the business has had it with deployment failures. Not enough time to do any of the technical debt and I'm not sure one if the issues has a solution.
Time to create a resume I guess. Been a really long time.
Let me know if you want a developer in Des Moines!2 -

Not really a programming rant but, I'm pretty sure VW engineers and developers purposely do this:

dev: but it works...
me: yes, but not optimally.
dev: Working as intended (TM)
me: ... teh fuq?

If you refused to pay for extended support there's no need for us to "Fix" a problem on your app when there's a new IOS or Android version released.
Sure it might work and no we can't future proof it.
Just pay for extended support and no that's not part of the development. -
If you tried to fix a bug
And put it on stage, but still not working!!!
MAKE SURE HAVE HAVE REBUILD YOUR SOLUTION3 -
At my school, there was this thing called avid, it was basically English lesson, replacing one of your electives.
I didn't do avid, but everyone I knew did, (I thought it was for idiots lol).

Hey guys, could use some opinions. So I live in a country with a pretty small economy. I've been working at a big company out here for about a year now. Initially my plan was to work here for a year then apply for grad school in the states, try and use that leverage for one of those big us dollar jobs and potentially one of those magic green cards I've been reading about. I work about the equivalent of 35k/yr in my current position. It may sound pretty ordinary to some of you guys, but here it's a pretty huge salary. It's pretty hard to walk away from it. It's now becoming difficult to make the decision of giving up such a high salary, to make the time and money investment in school. Running the risk of spending a year or 2 in school and then not being able to work in the states. Putting the money aside i know that there'll be greater oppurtunity for learning and growth in the states, so it may be worth it for the experience alone. What do you guys think ? Take the risk? Stay safe in my job? look at other countries maybe ? I'm all ears.6

My code worked without any error, now I am sure there is something perky, if not now, then there will be an issue because of this module... Yes, there will be a problem.1

I hate it when an opinion is valued by someone seniority.
Sure, you might not like react, fine, but if your only argument for that is it being built by Facebook, you're just an ass.
Sure, you might not like node, fine, but if your only argument for that is your prejudice towards javascript , you're just an ass.

Not a rant, just something that made me laugh way too much. We wanted to test this error logger we made to see if it could report where the error happened, so we wrote a function that just throws an exception. Not sure what to call it, we called it “shitTheBed”.
So it looked like:
service.shitTheBed()
I almost want to leave it there.2 -

Fellow JS devs. Is TypeScript worth learning? I notice it's trending quite a bit but not sure if it's a fad or a new direction. Any thoughts on that? I learned CoffeeScript a while back and have yet to see a single job that requests it, let alone requires it. So I'm skeptical.11 -
Not sure if other programming languages class a Boolean as an integer value buuuuuuut...
The amount of times I've seen people do code such as...
if(value == true) {
variable = "blah blah";
} else if(value == false) {
variable = "blah";
}
Instead of doing a simple 1D array and going...
variable = strings[value];
It drives me crazy, such a small thing that has no real benefit but... Ugh... Whyyyyyyy3 -
"If a feature or product were legitimately easy the user would not be writing in to support about how stuck they are. Sure, some percentage of users will find questions to ask about any interface. But do you want to start the conversation by assuming the user falls into that percentage? You venture to learn much more if you assume the software is wrong, not the user." - Andrew Spittle

My coworkers are great; they actually manage to solve problems in really unexpected ways.
Problem: documentation is not up-to-date with latest changes.
My fix: update it, make sure it has all the latest modifications.
Their fix: if there's no documentation, they can't complain about it...1 -
Not sure if this is the laziest but it’s certainly the most current... waiting til Oct 15th to collect my accounts and file income tax 🤦🏻♂️3

I always love when I pick C again just for fun. I'm really used to "print" something if I'm not sure about that in basically everything.
You wanna print something in C? Well unless you know what and where it is (no point of print-checking then), it'll just happily crash without any reported error. Not to mention if I wanna find a bug, I don't have to get a debugger! Printf alone is basically a breakpoint! Ah stupid me :D -
So, I've a side project for some sort of touristic blog, it will have some special graphic customization (interactive maps and other things) and I'm not sure if deploying a WordPress and creating some plugins for the customization or start a website from scratch, I've googled a little bit the pros and cons of WordPress because I've never used it but I'm still not really sure
