I’ve been thinking lately, what is it that devRant devs do?
So after a couple of days of pulling data from devRants API's, filtering through the inconsistent skill set data of about 500 users (seriously guys, the comma is your friend) i’ve found an interesting set of languages being used by everyone.
I've limited this to just languages, as dwelling into frameworks, libraries and everything else just grows exponentially, also ive only included languages with at least 5 users out of the pool.

I have a huge problem.
I fell in love with a girl and I can't concentrate enough to code. I sit at my PC, open editor and start, but from time to time I find myself staring blindly into a screen realizing i lost some time thinking of her. Then I get back to work, but I start to write nonsense out of confusion. Today ive been trying to code from 10 am til 4 pm, but nothing. Ive literally done nothing today. Just lost time...25 -

So at the end of last month our complete team was fired because restructuring in the company. We have had this countdown running since the first day we got the news. Ive made this photo yesterday so only 3 days and a few hours to go and then a month of sitting on the bench at my work (Im a consultant and work on project basis for other companies)

sometimes I hate python....
Ive just chased down a bug where a simple string saved in a simple dict sometimes came out as a f*cking tuple(!) when I needed it!
turned out that at some point this dict got updated with values from some other dict. And at some other point, I decided it was a great idea to rewrite that update code into individual setter's instead ... and of course forgot to remove one the trailing comma's, thus creating a perfectly legal tuple .... *sigh*
No errors, no warnings - just plain corrupt data....

...ive been on call for 27 minutes. Have had 2 calls already. One "resolved itself as [their] coworker restarted the server on [their] end" and the other didn't realize the page they were trying to load was decommed 2 years ago. They submitted the request.
I'm sick, annoyed already, and don't want to deal with this, but will because it's my job. Kind of. I have to respond to the call, even if it's fucking dumb.14 -
Ive just bought a domain name for my nephew of now 36 hours old. Ive a really common lastname and it took me 8 years to get a domainname with my name in it.
By the time he is ten (or how old they will be when they get their first email address) he will have his own personalized email and when they learn the basics of programming he can use his own domain for his site.8 -

Sister of a friend of mine fucked up her Mac, her Dad, they called me to fix it.

Just got a lection from my manager.
Today he sent me an email with request to change validation on one field validation from decimal(5,3) to int which will be 5 digit number. Ok i did that, I changed it on UI, changed validation, changed mappings, changed dtos, created migration files, and changed it in databse. After i did all of that I replied to his email and said that ive changed validation and adjusted it in database.
After my email here comes rage mail from manager with every fuckin important person in cc I kid you not. Manager is asking why the fuck did I change database when Ive could only use different validaton for that field on UI.
I Almost flipped fuckin table. What does validation good do if you wouldnt be able ti save that form? And form has like 150 fields. And if I left validation only everthing would fuckin break.
Sometimes i think that its better not to think.

Aye so i got a new job, and its android. I thought "yeah sure, ive been a java dev my whole life, it will be easy".
And it is easy.
But its like a fleshed out java, with a trillion built in classes and xml (seroiusly, fuck xml), and also the studio eats away my ram.5 -

Clients r wankers. He wants to be able to send login details incl passwords in email to his clients when he adds them in the cms. The passwords are encrypted and generated on creation of a new user. Ive told him that sending credentials in email is shit and not secure. The stubborn bastard wont budge, so instead i've put explicit instructions to reset password once logged in with the credentials they send. Any other suggestions?3

Ive just finished the Global Game Jam.
We were in a team of three people. An artist, a dev who is in school and knows programming syntax and can make basic things and me worked on a game. A fourth person who makes audio for games w did do some of the musics in our game. The following is the result of 5.5 hours of sleep in 48 hours time.

I hate phonecalls so i rarely do them. Today my project lead called me with a question and he just couldnt hear me. This was my fourth phonecall in 2 years time with this phone. And everytime they couldnt hear me. After switching to speaker they do.

Ive never used vim. In my life. I've never had the need to.
It was only yesterday while I was installing a new relic plugin to my MySQL server when the plugin installed opened vim for me to add some configurations. Took me about a minute to add the configs, and another 20 minutes to figure out how to quit vim.
Gotta say that I'm more comfortable making HTML websites with pretty CSS animations in sublime text than working in VIM!!! 👀5 -

The past few days ive been looking into angular.
Its a bloated piece of crap. It makes your page twice the fucking size and adds tons of unneccessary code with shit syntax. Whatever you do in angular can be done in a normal language, even fucking vanilla javascript. Stop fucking making unneccessary frameworks for js developers who are too lazy to learn a proper language.3 -

MacBook Pro's (2017) keyboard is a fucking nightmare. So far Ive had more than 10 keys being detached from the keyboard. Luckily Apple has replaced those keys for free but this should not be a fucking problem on a $2600 laptop. Fucking hell.8

Providing hosting and site management services to clients was the best decision Ive ever made. Now they don't get access to their websites until I get paid.
Getting a managed dedicated server was an even better decision. Allowing me to focus on the development while a professional team takes care of my clients security.3 -

Got fed up of waiting for the carrot on the stick that is 'budget approval' and decided to start using trials of IntelliJ and JRebel rather than eclipse and restarting my server everytime I make a change. I dont know why but everytime I want to make something I start out, find out its not possible and when Ive put it down and wait a few days there will be an sdk availble to make it possible.
5 days ago I started making a toll which reads the current song playing in spotify and it should send it to discord so other people can see the music Im listening to.

ive got a server set up, and a client app. the client has a the server's public key built in, and encrypts the aes key/iv and sends it to the server, simple enough.
but now, after the first socket connection is over, what do i do? ive got both sides with the same aes key, but the server has multiple keys for other clients. so when the first client connects again, how do i know which key to use?
ive tried implementing a session class where there's a session id, but it doesnt work because the id must be encrypted, too. can someone help a fellow ranted out?1 -
Hey fellow devs, my friend showed me this Godot game engine. Ive spent 15hrs over the weekend building strategy game client which consumes my api server. Ive done a lot! It was easy to understand custom Gdscript which is okay. But before i dig in, i want to know what you guys think about this game engine? Is it going somewhere? Is it good option for indie games? Is it good option for building android/ios games? I need to make my mind 🤔5

So at my new job Ive been waiting for credentialls, server access software installation, etc ( i know i know but thats for another rant ) and all that idle time has given me opportunity to crawl in the company's sharepoint page which has the career path for a software developer, since Im a student Im listed as trainee, but after that I have to wait 3 years + certifications to be considered as senior and then be able to hop to next hierarchy level Software Designer and then another three years to be able to become a software architect. So my point, as I was seeing this I thought "I dont wanna wait 6 years to become a software architect, Im going to be better faster in order to become needed and make them promote me faster"
The thing is Ive always wanted to become a softwsre architect and learning that I have to wait 7 years to be considered a proeficient architect just makes me mad.

Context: ive been porting a single threaded D.A.G scheduler into a lockless multithreaded one. Point is its an objectively complicated project where theres lots of overlap in the code and architectural boundaries are very fuzzy.
My boss: "Can you just make new branches for every 'large' change youve done. Its too hard to merge this one giant branch youve got"
Me: "Fuck bro, but this is 2 months worth of significant refactoring where the commits are not atomic and you told me way back then that it was cool to work in my own repo. Now ive got to go redo half my work"
Boss: "Well yea but isnt it so much better to work with clearly seperated histories"

Ive not programmed in a few weeks I wanna say, and when I do I go on the binge and then I "take breaks" to relieve the stress because I want to just relax but I dont force programming out of my life I also think about better ways to do stuff but I feel like shit because I want to just enjoy and relax with some games but I enjoy and LOVE programming but I just dont know what to do. because I want to enjoy some of the games I got for christmas but I want to keep improving and I feel if I go a day without it just that much shittier for not. and I cant see how much Ive improved. So SQL Cursors definitely suck. Got a one time data migration script that needs to migrate 3 million rows of data (which I misread as 300k)
Using cursors it would take 15 hours to complete. Ive just had to make the most disgusting script using recursion and a whole lot of CTE's but it now takes about 15 mins to do the same faff
I feel dirty just reading the script, but atleast it'll be dead and buried once it's been ran

So the last two weeks Ive been trying to flash lineageOS on my new OnePlus6. Ive done multiple phones with custom roms without issue, but the new A/B partitioning makes it a lot more impossible.
I followed LineageOS their official guide for the phone twice and also suggestions from both OP subreddit as LineageOS subreddit.
After every fail I end up with a black screen and a blue LED, both when booting the OS and when booting TWRP from fastboot. Then Im doing a factory reset through a windows only tool and start over.
Im getting pretty frustrated, to a level I am almost saying FUCK it I will use google, since my current phone only works while connected to a charger. Since I really hate google I hope any of you can give a suggestion of flashing my phone.10 -
So ive been on this project for months. Project lead did not have a role anymore and now they decide this other guy is the new project lead. This while i am the one having to deploy everything and answer questions from mr Free Lance.

Ive been looking for a contact manager for Android with a certain feature, but can't find anything for it.
Ive got quite lot contacts on my phone and some of them are from people online (devRant and other communities) as well as family, friends, old classmates etc.
Sometimes I forget who is who and thus Ive to add people as: "Jane (devRant)", "Jane Doe (Niece)", "Jane (Classmate school A)", "Jane (Classmate school B)"
Now I am looking for an app that allows for adding tags to a contact (preferably multiple) to avoid polluting names with something behind the name.
I dont need any cloud saves for it, although I would like it to be able to export/import it to csv, xml or json.

Writing simple driver for AT24C256 eeprom on pico (RP2040)
It turned out it was FT24C256A, which should follow same protocol.
After literally over month of coming back to it, getting stuck again, rewriting things (including some functions of pico-sdk), i almost gave up a d started just yolo trying random shit.
Afterall the documentation on addressing the chip fucking missled me -_- (1st bit is r/w flag and 2-7 bits are address, counted from MSB->LSB)
I made it work yesterday.
In meantime Ive rewritten Wire library, Ive modified someone's else rewrite, extended sdk to allow getting i2c registers, tried to use tiny go just to learn it doesnt support i2c slave mode, resoldered entire thing few times, measured connections few too many times etc.
Frustrated I doubted I will ever manage to finish putting this project together because it looked like Im just too noob.1 -

The one I use the most often is the AWS API (usually via a wrapper like boto3), but I hate it so it's not my favorite.

i've installed lamp and my php -v is 7.1.15. i created a form and when i request to a .php file, it says "php-cgi not found: Please ensure that configured PHP Interpreter built as CGI program (--enable-fastcgi was specified)".
but ive specified the php.ini file from etc/php/7.1/cli.

February will be the first full year at this company as full time employee.
I've updated so many legacy projects, optimized a lot of workflows as well as built new tools to improve efficiency and remove unnecessarily duplicate projects (sometimes literally only 3 variables were different between multiple projects)
My one co-worker taught himself enough code to do the job but doesn't think like a programmer though he is asking me for help and advice to improve what he does since ive proven i know a little. my other direct co-worker I'm practically teaching a Programming 100 course to them
My direct manager at one point said he was so happy he took a chance on me even though I didn't interview well
I like my job, I find it so much better than my last job which was horribly toxic, and more fun than my first 'real' job as a night shift help desk for basically a warehouse environment.
But I feel under paid sometimes for how much i do and all ive improved in my first year, I have my first yearly review coming up. I'm hoping to get a decent raise for all ive done and I want to somehow go over everything with the HR person to justify it. But I have no idea how to talk about my dev work to them in a way a non technical person could understand. I'm also not sure how the review process will work. Like will my manager be there. Or is it just me and HR, is there a paper I'll be sent to fill before hand,1 -

Rust's Result is definitely the best error-handling experience I have ever had. I started working on some Typescript stuff after using Rust for a few weeks and had to implement my own Result. It's just so easy and clean that it leaves exceptions in the dust. I don't think I can live without Results anymore.
Now I understand why everyone loves rust so much. It's just so clean, safe, easy (after you get the hang of it) and so fucking powerful (procedural macros are awesome).

I read. Alot. When I'm going to do something simple, even if I've done it before I google a bit on "how to do x" and see if there are better ways to do it. And I follow the rabbit hole a bit to see where it goes.
Example, I just learned about the unix command mktemp. I wasn't googling about making temporary files, but it was part of a solution to a different problem. Ive discussed how to make temporary files with colleagues before, and this builtin unix command has never come up. So many minutes wasted coming up with random filenames. -
Ive never been able to use rails console because I could never resolve an error.
I spent about a day on three separate occasions trying to fix it.
The last time I tried, I gave up and decided I would just live without rails console.

I'm trying to pick up game development as a hobby (im already a full stack software engineer) and ive decided to either do lua with roblox or java with minecraft. im going to start out doing mods and building on top of already existant systems and then venture further if i like it. which do you think i should do? lua or java?5

Question for those running Linux on a Dell XPS 13 with a 4k display. What distro do you use? I tried using Ubuntu 16 but had to uninstall it due to absolutely terrible battery life and heat.
Ive been doing fine using the Linux subsystem for windows, but I kinda wanted to give Linux another go and dual boot just for the heck of it.6 -

I am making a downlader for talkpython lectures and ive managed to get the "user_tpt" (auth key) well when I'm set up the request I sent it in the header when its supost to be in the cookies. I couldent figure out why it wasn't working so I left it for 2 days and now just when I open it I see my mistake1

Anyone know of a free screen sharing application for Windows for mirroring my Android device. Vysor is ok but I don't want to pay for anything. Ive tried wireless mirroring but that is slow, so I prefer USB connection. I am looking for a free, no ad, program that is fast.3

Ive been running a brute force program on kali linux virtual machine which was using multi threading by sending Hundreds of requests per 10 seconds 24/7 my laptop overheated and shut down and now my kali linux vm wont boot up something got broken heres a screenshot help please

Today I escape from the clutches of the legacy iOS project ive been stuck in for about a year and a half.
Starting on a new team, totally different stack (TypeScript/Angular).
Its bad that what makes me happiest is that we have unit tests, something thats been missing from my life for so long now. I might actually get to do TDD now.

Hey all. So I'm a bit of an aspiring developer/engineer. I am in highschool right now and am getting to the point where I should start looking at colleges. Ive wanted to do something computer related and for a while now ive had my heart set on some sort of security engineer/tech/researcher what have you. But it has been pointed out to me that computer sciences often require several high level math courses namely Calc. Problem being I'm pretty bad at Calc and haven't been able to do too well.
I'm not too sure what I should do. I'm struggling with my highschool calc classes and and fear that college level course will just go over my head. Ive never had issues with math before until I got to Calc. Ive got some of the basics of cryptography such as hashes and cryptographic alorithms but thats about it. Do computer science degrees really rely that heavily on Calc?7 -
I came across an issue with Visual Studio 2017. I'm unable to collapse multiline comments, there is no - sign in front of it like with code blocks.
At home it is no issue and I can do this without problems.
Ive looked online and all I can find is people not being able to collapse comments in VS Code. And people who want to collapse everything but the comments, but the comments do get collapsed.
Is it a setting I cannot find?2 -

Ive been looking for a new keyboard for a while, im currently using some wireless HP membrane keyboard, no idea of the model.
I stumbled upon a Corsair Gaming K70 LUX RGB MX Silent.
Anyone have experience with this keyboard? Is it silent as the name indicates?
I really cant make up my mind if i should buy it. Its price is lowered 33% this weekend, but my current keyboard functions just fine. Usually id say i shouldnt, but a part of me wants to. Im split in half xD9 -
Whats your take on Patreon (and services like it), have you ever considered one or been told to make one?
personally I think its cool that if you have a game community that wants to support you or just people that like your work in general that can support you a little for your work. and Ive been told I should make one but I dont see the point for my own case personally.

I've been trying to work with net SNMP, and I can't seem to send traps to managers.
I've opened the ports, and it seems I need to edit the conf and add the appropriate trap community. I have tried that, but it just gives a warning of unknown definition. Ive tried to follow the stuff on the wiki but it just gives the same error.

Going to be a Senior next semester and ill be taking a software testing course as an elective. From a student perspective, it sounds pretty important. Nevertheless Im excited to jump in to a simulation of real world application of what Ive learned so far in college.

Okay so Ive been working on a custom queueing system
basically the system generates ticket numbers for checked in paients and then assigne them to a room when it's their turn to be attended to
so I'm having some challanges with the database when the patient finishes their session with the Dr the admin can remove them from the queue and is supposed to reset the room.state = 0 //which means room in unoccupied
this is proving to be problematic coz it's not even finding the room

Ive got a weird issue with my raspberry pi script that doesn't let me type anything into the command line after the script runs.
I should explain I'm trying to write a script for retropie to load games from a script and to exit the current game from a script.

heres my problem, ive got a table, inside the table is the tbody, now i only want two rows to be displayed in each page (im doing html for pdf docs). so what ive been trying to do is adding <tr class="display:block;page-break-after: always !important"> whenever it meets the condition (rowCount%2!=0).
Ive been trying to figure this out for the last 12 fucking hours. cheesus fucking crust. ik this isnt stackoverflow but stack hasnt really been helpful as well :( FML6 -
If you upgrade your framework/php/React version then you need to have tests to makes sure nothing breakes after upgrade!?
Ive never seen a project with tests that completly covers everything and ive been a developer (web) for over 10 years.
