WINDOWS USER VS LINUX USER
A Windows User's view on computing
I have the blue screen of death again
You'll never hear me say
I'm happy with my computer
At the end of the day
my operating system
dictates
my choice
in programs i use and the features I've
i have complete control
over nothing
i lose sleep
worrying about getting viruses
and
microsoft patching vulnerabilities in time
i don't have time to think about
some thing better.
i've learned
to live with old software issues
There's no way i'm planning
to change, and
its worth it to me
A Linux User's view on computing

- Sleep 7h+ each night (you think you don't need it - but you do!)
- drink NO coffee (you've slept enough!)
- pair-up (you're not as good as you think)
- get a grasp on the problem (it's time will spent!)
- communicate constantly (you're not alonw especially)
- refactor just as much
- learn from you partner
- celebrate even small accomplishments (you need success!)
- go home and do something else (your pet project does not need more than 5hrs per week!)
- repeat (because repetition makes perfection!)20 -
* Starts work with boss
* Works till night
* Decide to continue the next day
* Both leave work at the same time
* Both arrive at work next day at the same time
"Hey is the work done?"
Oh forgive me for not fucking dreaming up the work in my fucking sleep.5 -
A true story... sad but true
2.00AM ->> git commit -m "it's time to sleep"
2.45AM ->> git commit -m "I can't sleep, fixed the UI issue"3 -
- Think first, write later;
- Do not rush into purchasing servers. You might not need them for another 10 months;
- It takes away a lot of family time to do side projects;
- NOT playing any games saves tremendous amounts of time. Also applies to watching TV;
- If you get stuck - get some sleep. Morning brings you better ideas;
- Write proper abstractions or you'll end up refactoring everything way more often that you'd like;
- Side projects need a loo-ooooot of your will and determination19 -
How to beat jet lag with style:
When your normal sleep schedule was so broken it became completely normal in the different timezone.
I used to sleep from 5am to 1pm in my country. With a -7 time difference this became 10pm to 6am.
Should I be happy?9 -
It's 4 A.M and I just remembered what I did wrong, this happens every freaking time 😐
What the hell brain !
I need some sleep !5 -
Also a big “fuck you” to whoever decided under any circumstance holding the power button down on a computer case meant anything other than shut this mother fucker all the way down and try the fuck again.
Gahhh. When I hold the power button I don’t what you to sleep, I want you to die! I’m electronically smothering your bitch ass. When I’m holding down the power button to restart, the computer should feel like it’s being waterboarded! Like these may be it’s last moments on Earth if it doesn’t act right and get in compliance! No it’s not nap time, it’s time to shut up or shut down...forever!9 -
Been awake for like 18 hours.
Ok one last push to gitlab.
*Gitlab offline* welp, guess ill do that later, time for some sleep.
*Reads their status on twitter about data loss* (panic)
FUCK9 -
I wish there was a way to feel well rested without actually sleeping.
Or maybe I could somehow learn to program in my sleep.
I would be so productive, and finish so many projects if those options were possible.11 -

I just implemented parallelism in one of my major data collection tools for work, and cut the tool's run duration by 90%. That seems like as good a time as any to go to sleep.2

How everyone see weekends:
Its party time and I can finally sleep and watch movies as much as I want...
How devs see weekends:
Finally I can work more on this cool project...6 -
today i was very sleep deprived and i had an anxiety episode at work. that was the first time my coworkers saw me like that. they took me to a cafe, got me a pastry and kept chatting about random stuff while i calmed down. i felt vulnerable and ashamed for not keeping it together, but it was one of the nicest things anyone's ever done for me.14

1 fix my crappy sleep schedule.
2 organise my time better.
3 stop being a glutton.
4 earn a aws cert.
5 build a portfolio site.
6 build projects to go on portfolio site.
7 find a new job?
8 do some machine learning.
9 find love?
10 continue automating people out their job at their request.4 -
I was on Tumblr and I thought I was on devRant so when I was scrolling I kept wondering why everyone kept posting book aesthetic pictures.
Either I spend way to much time on devRant, or I need to sleep.7 -
Have a meeting at 10 AM.
It's 2:25 AM now.
Can't sleep but also don't want to sleep for an insufficient amount of time.
So I'm going to stay awake till 10 AM.
I don't like meetings.3 -
that moment when you are in bed with your smartphone and it smashes on your face, then you know: it's time to sleep2
-
Sleep time. If anyone else breaks their shit tonight, I'm going to be pissed. 2.5 more hours until my wonderful coworker on the other side of the country takes calls. I can survive this...1
-
Just gotta love random hibernation wake ups, went sleep on time in like a year, fell asleep quick and then my fucking 3 monitors turn on and the fucking pc woke up, for no fucking reason, blasting equal of 4 suns into my eyes.9

Some words of wisdom passed on by our Scrum.
1. I am responsible for setting boundaries. Work time, sleep time, family time, me time. If I don't set them properly, things WILL get unbalanced very quickly. (And I would add, burnout will follow closely).
2. Being productive isn't about doing more and more in less time. It's about doing only the most important things well, and either saying no to the other things, or finding another way to get them done. (Prioritize!)
3. I can't win (let alone run) a marathon by thinking of it as a 26 mile long sprint, or a week as a five day sprint. (Eat a digital elephant a byte at a time).
4. Loved ones are good judges of when things are in and out of balance.
5. Taking time off is essential. Vacations, yes, but also nights and weekends. (Or you WILL burn out and hate what you do).

People say programmers are no fun!! But they don't know the truth.
We have big Ass container of emotions almost ready to explode anytime. We are spending too much time in debugging stuff one after another that having a free time is just a hoax to us, even when we came back home for sleep, it's only to dream about solution. We would be happy with debugging the error that is not letting us sleep for weeks.4 -
I hate the feeling of not being able to get shit working and it's time to sleep but you don't want to sleep until it's fixed4
-
So I've been exporting a JSON dump of ~120GB for hours and when trying to processing it, and write it to a new file, I wrote to the same file. FML. Hours of export became 0 bytes in no time. Think its time to get some sleep.4
-
I have been awake for 21 hours and couldn’t sleep last night, because of long vacation and my bed time is messed up. This is my first day working after training and I got 9~10 hours to go
P.S. coffee doesn’t help4 -
Week 26 advice - you all probably know this but good to refresh!
Eat healthily
Sleep well
Document clearly
Annotate your code
Use version control properly
Keep yourself in check with project management tools
Your peers are your friends... And competition.
As much as your boss is an idiot respect them and your life will be easier.
With great power comes great responsibility; don't touch that keyboard until you think through what you are doing chances are your first idea is not the best.
Don't write quick fixes and say you will go back to clean it up later on when you have time. That time will never come.3 -
Had 4-5 hours of sleep last night because I had to wake up early this morning for an internal demo of the feature I worked on. It was scheduled early morning because the boss was busy.
I come to the office looking like a zombie, practically sleep walking my way to the office, and guess what... The app server is down! Yay.
I had to reschedule it to right in the middle of lunch time because hey... The boss is busy. Now everyone in the team hates me for ruining their lunch.
Now I'm sitting here, staring at my code, remembering the sweet luxury of sleep.2 -
When you've tried for hours to fix a bug, But you know you have to try and get some sleep, and at the same time know you won't be able to sleep if you can't solve the bug...1

Ok. You're just lucky I don't sleep.2 -
Was coding on a project at home and suddenly i got the feeling that i had forgotten something...
*Checks the time*
06.30AM
Oh... yeah...sleep...
Hello coffee my old friend...
Time to head off to work then :)
How often does this happen to you?4 -
*plays game for 10h consecutive*
.. yeah yeah I know what you're thinking. This guy doesn't have a life. And you're probably right.
*gets hungry*
… I could really use a hamburger right now 🤔
… But the fast food tent is ~30 minutes walking distance away, and this game automatically logs you out after 30 mins inactivity...
What if I could program in some delayed input?
*jazz hand routine engages*
Hmm.. so if I do something like:
PS C:\Users\Condor> $wshell.AppActivate('BlueStacks'); Sleep 1; $wshell.SendKeys('abusing this chat~'); Sleep 1; $wshell.SendKeys('for upkeep of 10h play~'); Sleep 1; $wshell.SendKeys('while I get myself a hamburger~'); Sleep 1; $wshell.SendKeys('sorry~');
that should work, no?
Le output:
abusing this chat
sorry
Well, even for PowerShit.. good enough, right? It gets the message across 🙃
Hmm.. let's just put an afk message instead, as I'm using the guild chat and don't want any of the members to think that I'm a freak
PS C:\Users\Condor> Sleep 1; $wshell.AppActivate('BlueStacks'); Sleep 1; $wshell.SendKeys('afk~');
.. which seems to work like a charm.. alright, perhaps I can entrust PowerShell to do that again after a 900 second delay, which should give me enough time to get that hamburger.
*comes back home*
"Logged out due to 30 minutes of inactivity."
MICROSOFT POWERSHIT, YOU'VE HAD BUT ONE FUCKING JOB!!!!
Well, guess I'll do that no-life 10+h gaming session somewhere next year again then. Thanks Powercunt!21 -
A few weeks ago when I was sleep deprived I found a way to use devRant in multi window view and now I don't know how I did that anymore. :c14
-
Me: "I've got an exam tomorrow morning, I should try to go to sleep early tonight".
22:00 - Get into bed and put on audiobook
23:00 - "Alright I'm getting sleepy now, I should fall asleep soon :)"
00:00 - "Must be soon now"
01:00 - "Maybe in 15 minutes"
02:00 - "Still got 6 hours to sleep, plenty of time"
03:00 - "My body is tired, my mind is not"
04:00 - "RIP"
It's safe to say that my sleep rhythm is utterly fucked.14 -
Sometimes I feel like I shouldn't rely on f.lux to tell me the time... But the fact that it's getting brighter tells me that I probably won't get much sleep tonight...3
-
Drunken neighbor: Did i piss you?
I: No.
Drunken neighbor: I know i do, but i want a girl. This is my problem.
I: Go find her.
Drunken neighbor: I can't, i'm black.
I: It's not the reason.
Drunken neighbor: It is.
I: Reason si you are dirty, drunken pig.
Drunken neighbor: You are racist!
I: Och, sorry, i forgot. You are dirty, drunken, black pig. One more time you will wake us at 3am i'll call ku klux klan on you so my girlfriend can sleep at night. Now fuck off and let us sleep.
Happy new year.7 -
So a few months ago I started dating. I love my girlfriend with all my heart, but something has been bothering me a bit. I can no longer easily do my day-to-day work. Whereas previously I would be productive at any time I want, now it's more of a "I can work whenever she wants to work". It's hard to balance and even harder to actually get to it.
Previously I would stay with her during the day, and then wake up in the night to do all the household chores, learn her language and if I can get to it, even improve some of my shitty code. Needless to say, she didn't like that I didn't sleep with her and it's not exactly healthy either - I barely slept at all.
How do you balance work/relationship without throwing sleep time in the mix? Both work and girlfriend are at home for me.7 -
Not really a dev habit, but a habit many devs have.
My beyond fucked up sleep schedule.
SLEEP CAN
SUCK
MY
ASS
I've woken up at 8 and went to sleep at 12 for two days, and I'm beyond happy with the purely accidental progress I've made, really hope to not fuck it up this time like always.2 -
My coworkers are all working remotely because they're hungover, and all shocked I'm in the office today.
You think a night of drinking and 4 hours of sleep is enough to hold me down? Please. If I'm hungover enough to not go to work it means I'm probably in the hospital lol.
That being said, I have discovered that scotch does not agree with my stomach, so I'm not having the best time. At least I'm here though!9 -
The only good thing about morning classes is going back home to sleep and still waking up at a reasonable time.4
-
Time flies, one minute you're starting a project at 11PM and finally ready to sleep...at 5.45AM
You know that feeling when you're "on the zone"2 -
good night my fellow devs....
just finished my coding...
Its 3:20 am in India now...
Time to sleep9 -
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
I HAVE A TEST TOMORROW AT 8 AM AND I'VE BEEN TRYING TO SLEEP SINCE 12.30 AM. IT'S 6 AM ALREADY, 6 AM!
I guess when they no screens before sleeping they really mean it. I'm fucked, I'm really fucked. I guess I'll stare the ceiling until the alam goes off and accept an awful day and hope I get pumped up during the test or something. Fuck me. I want to fucking SLEEP. Fuck.
I just wanted to install vivaldi before sleeping and watch the last rick and morty episode. Does that fucking make me a fucking night owl? No. I could've use these precious time learning or writing code, or even sleeping, but fuck! I'm stuck here in time, just waiting for fucks sake!
Good night...
OR That's what I WOULD say if I could sleep...16 -
1. Keep your rythm: 7/8 hours of sleep each day and DON'T take your work home. Unless you have your own business ofcourse. Still: don't wear yourself out!
2. Put on music. Me personally like fast punk when i'm struggling with a deadline. Makes you want to go faster.
3. Close ALL communication like chats, mail etc. Hell i even thought of a sign "do not disturb"
4. Coffee. Lot's of coffee
5. Use a time tracking method like pomodoro5 -
I lost sleep because of Kubernetes...
Rancher you fucking cuck you didn't tell me ahead of time OpenEBS can't RWX YA FOKIN WANKER FUCKING DAFT CUNT PIECE OF SHITE BLOODY BELLEND8 -
Got an 8:30 class in the morning.
Me: so close to fixing this bug. Just a bit more.
12:00 am
Me: I'll just install SQL and head to sleep.
1:00 am
Me: holy crap what time is it.
1:30 am
Me: I hate myself.1 -
Manager: Morning Alex, how are you?
My Brain: I'm fan-fucking-tastic, I've had 1 hour of sleep, hurt my back, feels like my tail bone is broken, struggling to walk, every piece of code I've written for the past 3 day's has been a complete waste of time and I'm at work...
Me actually: Good thanks .-.3 -
Time to go to bed.
Why not trying this lib ? it's not that late, let's give it a try for an hour and then --> sleep.
Woaw what, two hours passed already ? I was just still beginning to have fun ! so frustrating. Na, I could not sleep if I'm frustrated, let's dig deeper for 30min and then, go !
shit it's been an hour already, man, go to sleep now ! ...Actually it's too late already, better not sleeping and keep digging !
In the morning : can't wake up, tonight I promise, I go sleep at nine.
In the evening : oh new angular ! could worth a quick try before sleep !1 -
This is the last straw. I am so done with Chrome.
…
I woke up AGAIN this morning to my MacBook shining away brightly, having not gone to sleep the ENTIRE night. I did some better research this time and discovered it's actually Chrome that is causing this.
Yes Chrome is deciding whether my MacBook goes to sleep or not.
I am not ok with this. Worse, it doesn't even have any ability to change this behavior. It's basically a hidden "feature" of Chrome: it wastes your hydro too!
This is not the first time this has happened either. Last time my MacBook wasn't properly plugged in and it completely drained the battery, shutting it right off. I ranted about that already.
But I am just SO fucking livid about this right now. What on EARTH is going through google's mind that they think this is in any way even REMOTELY acceptable?
I've already filed a bug report but I think this is the last straw. I am just sick to death of Chrome. This bug is literally costing me money and damaging my property.
Shove it right up your fucking ass, Google. Right up there and twist it around.
I'm switching back to a real browser.32 -
programming fact.....
long time ago ,
the people who sacrificed their love, family, sleep, food, laughter and other joys of life were called
"saints"
now they are called "programmers"1 -
Almost 7am. My body is now used to going to sleep this late. I have to start waking up at that time soon.
This is what holidays do to me.6 -
People having sleep deprivation.
If your health is at stake, you may want to aim for maximum healing potential.
Humen always should prefer more natural substances and techniques.
As chemicals mostly alter the status quo but tackle the ultimate reason why.
Military has developed glasses that simulate the sunrise to wake you up / keep you awake.
That technique is like 20 years old. And who is gonna get those glasses for me?
Nowadays, studies published find humen feel more at ease by rising and sleeping with the sun and moon.
Having two weeks of camping once in a while is recommended. At least once a year.
Alternately you can try to regulate your days rhythm.
Start your day with a cup of hot speedwell tea.
Like every freaking day.
Its augmenting your activity thus easing your sleep at night.
Give every technique at least two weeks time to take effect.
And always remember :
Sleep is a thing that can be influenced but never will be controlled.
Good night ;P9 -
I recently started working with CI/CD in gitlab. I don't know why I had such a hard time getting it to work. I left it hanging for another day. Yesterday, before I went to sleep, I merged to master branch. On waking up I can't explain my happiness when I saw my pipeline... 😀6
-
When it keeps happening every time but you're too lazy to fix it because you always remember it at 7am when you want to close the computer and go get some sleep...
Ugh...1 -
That time when you check devRant in your sleep and have a dream that a rant has over 300 ++'s. Waking up was such a disappointment.2
-
I feel like a man out of time and space.
I can work from anywhere so I am nowhere.
I work all the time, and I have no time to work.
Hours, days, and weeks. They all feel the same. The gentle barrier of sleep that denotes when one day ends and another begins is barely remembered if observed at all.
What the fuck did I sign up for.4 -
Annoying thing happened at work as usual -> can't get the mood to code -> procrastinate -> finally get my shit together -> get some work done -> shit it's 07.00 PM I should be going home already -> still coding because I started late -> shit it's 09.00 PM -> get the fuck home -> I need time to be alone and relieve stress by surfing the web -> shit it's 02.00 AM -> try to get some sleep -> Why did she left me? How's dad doing? God I think I that function that I coded today is awful, gotta fix it tomorrow. Am I going to afford a house EVER? Fuck what I'm doing with my life. -> Shit it's 05.00 AM, I MUST SLEEP. -> (kinda sleep) -> Fuck it's 10.00 shit shit shit shit -> arrive at work -> I'm not ready to open the code -> procrastinate -> ...4
-
What I should do:
- organise my files
- make a pp presentation for English that I haven't even started
- learn for a test about insurances
- learn about characterising, processing and evaluating data
- more shit
What I do:
- browse devrant
- play games
- flash a new ROM until I find a good one
- restore a backup
- flash another ROM
- restore a backup
- go with the least worst ROM I had installed
- sleep
- sleep
- sleep
- sleep
- FUCKING SLEEP
At least I completely blocked YouTube...undefined android time waster fuck this shit list tasks sleep wasted time wasted time management rom school6 -

It's time to go sleep when you vomit instead of commit. -
Caught cold badly.
The worst part is that must finish the android project so I don't even have time for sleep.
I can't concentrate 😭 -
My weekend full of exhaustion and sleep is drawing to a close. Time to start a week full of exhaustion and struggling to stay awake at work.9
-
Pulled an all-nighter
Was too busy ans haven't had any time to eat anything next whole day.
35.5 hour sleep deprived, cameback home with takeouts
Let's pull the repo before i start eating.
Open the laptop and connect the charger while laying on bed.
*fell asleep and woke up 9 hours with laptop still running*
The worst part is that the problem i was trying to solve is still there.9 -
Sleep rant time!
As per usual, I got home late and tired, but wanted to keep on with learning to use Electron for a personal project. I setup everything, created the project and began to tinker with it.
One issue, the script I made was not loading, I spent like 30 minutes wondering why, reading docs (it was 12:40AM). When I was about to give in, I opened the index.html file and guess what? I IMPORTED THE SCRIPT AS A FUCKING STYLESHEET.
I laughed like 2 minutes, then shut the lid of my laptop and went to sleep and thought "Oh, so silly"3 -
I need to stop doing this,
"Fk I have this, this, and this due tomorrow. Well time to implement this cool new thing I found yesterday in my personal project. *2am* okay if I sleep for 4.3 hours and then..."
Why don't I just do required stuff first so I don't have to stress?!1 -
Before learning the css grid, I fell asleep so fast everytime at night. After the bootcamp
This is the 3rd day and I still can’t sleep on time, my brain keeps on banging my eyes to wake up and try all of the websites that have been piled up on my brainbfor 3 years
P.S. I start learning grid after using bootstrap layout the first time. Not gonna touch it again. It breaks my brain kinda bad1 -
was working on a passion project, looking at the clock periodically. was surprised a couple of times that it's still before 12 but kept on working. it wasn't. its 3 am. windows' clock was stuck. i have to get up in 4 hours. fml.3
-
Be careful when you go down the rabbit hole of creating custom observables (rxJS).
I wasted half a day just to find out that there are hot and cold observables and that the whole time I tried to use the wrong one.
It finally works. 01:00 in the morning.
My boss will be proud when he pulls the changes and the code looks completely fucked up (clean, well structured code, but he doesn't really know observables).
Now something different: Sleep. Cya. -
My pain medication makes me drowsy all the time but only lets me sleep at inconvenient times. For example, I got to sleep at 5:30 this morning. Work up at 6:30. But my body will be more than happy to put me to sleep in my computer chair at random intervals throughout the day.
Guess I'll get to work, then?1 -
I'm torn between waking up early so I can have time for myself to study/code to get a better job, and getting enough sleep. I end up getting neither.3
-
This fucking professor who doesn't go to classes and demands make up classes to catch up. Like WTF, So now you are taking our precious resting time where it is the only time we get our precious sleep? Fuck off. It was not our fault that you did not show up. I get that you want to catch up but taking our rest time is not cool. You are not the only one who stress us with fucking projects and exam shits...13
-
Today I decided sleep earlier and not to code late night , But when I checked time It was 12.20AM. And after that I was just checking rant, It's 1.00 AM now..☺😁2
-
So, I was on-call last night and I got paged four times in the six hour period that I slept. I had to get up and handle the alerts and make sure all the systems are up and running each time. I have a meeting in 20 minutes and I just want to sleep.2
-
I try to take things slow for a few days. I also stop coding on my free time and play some game or watch some shows/movies. And sleep a lot more. Chocolate helps, too.
-
31 hours
I was on a hackathon, we got time between Saturday 10AM until Sunday 5PM.
Most people went to sleep at some point, i literally used all the time i got and could submit a finished and playable game.
I felt drunk and incredibly dizzy at the end3 -
Hi everyone
cozyplanes here
Long time no see
If you remember me, please leave a comment
I miss this place a lot.
I am active on twitter and Instagram with the same name
Hang along with me there if you are interested
Thanks (will have some sleep and will be back tomorrow morning)28 -
They ask me how i can stare at a screen for 6h and go to sleep right away. They say it makes them unable to sleep after that time.
I say EMBRACE THE POWER OF F.LUX1 -
I went to sleep immediately while taking a break from debugging and the dream was me debugging the same error the entire time. Then I woke up in my chair and resumed debugging3
-
Woo crunch time! The 3 panic attacks a day, no sleep, massive guilt complex, caffiene addiction, lack of seeing my wife, phone breaking(calling doesn't work), lawn needing mowing, upper management bothering all of my team, more guilt, more panic, inferiority complex, theory that coworkers think I am slacking, and technology just not working because the machine spirit decided I pissed it off is starting to get to me a little.3
-
1 am, wide awake,
I want to go code but cannot take,
for time is not my friend,
If I go now, it will not end.
Rest is needed, sleep must be,
or tomorrow I will pay the fee,
concentration will be sparse,
and boss will surely kick my arse.2 -
Me, about to head out for work: Hey I wonder how much time I have left before the train departs
Clock: 02:00
Me: fuck I did it again
Waking up thinking it's time to start the day and then figure out you can still sleep for 4 hours, while having already showered, put clothes on, eaten breakfast6 -
Last time client got hacked...we just could not get rid of the malware...it replicated itself short after deletion.
Ended up creating the same files with zero content and setting them read only.
Not clean, but enough to sleep.2 -
Never been to one.
I'm firmly opposed to the idea of sacrificing sleep and free time just to show everyone how awesome and creative I am.3 -
Not sure if this counts as a dev skill but
Not needing sleep anymore.
Imagine how much time you had if you didn't need to waste several hours a day just sleeping4 -
A mosquito got into my room the other night and feasted on my foot for 9 hours. I could hardly walk the next day, and the itching was insane. I couldn’t go to sleep the next night I was so absorbed by my fixation on finding him. Eventually I barricaded myself with blankets. The one time blankets will actually protect you.3
-
May the people responsible for the decision to let Windows 10 wake up people's PCs from sleep mode in the middle of the night to install patches and then force-restart be tortured for eternity in hell. All of the hells. Of every religion. At the same time. While having to stare at a Windows ME bluescreen of death without the ability to blink or look away. For 65535 eternities. Followed by a buffer overflow.5
-
Hey devs!😀
Will drinking coffee help you reduce your sleeping hours?
I'm used to sleep 6-7 hr but still need more time , wondered if I can reduce it to 4 hr with drinking more coffee.
Any pointers?42 -
50 hours straight.
Attended a hackathon for 3 days and sadly when it was time to sleep the "sleeping arrangements" were already taken by some other teammates and there was no place for the rest. So me and 4 other teammates decided to work through the night and day to finish everything so we can go home and sleep.
Finish 3rd in the hackathon tho, not bad for a first time.😁3 -
So... I was in bed going to sleep 5 minutes ago... I just had a thought I have no idea from where...
My dreams are controlled by code source files...
Change source files, I will have different dream....
Guess I spent a good amount of time with source files today 😅😅8 -
Please take sleep deprivation seriously!
Take care of it and don't allow stress to take you over.
Here's a little story of what happened to me:
I've had sleep problems for all of my life, but the beginning of last summer 2018 it went too far. I turned 18 and somehow all the school, dev and personal work started to pile up, I stressed about them and started to have no sleep every other day and little sleep another. Immediately I took time off from everything for trying get better sleep.
Having no sleep means that your brain starts to run in really low gear but you might not even notice it. So I started stressing about every little detail, making ridiculous decisions and doing stuff that didn't really make any sense.
I went to a doctor and was ordered to take time off for a month or so and start medication with bunch of different pills. At the time I thought the medication could wait for a day and went to an old work friend's place for night stay to discuss about everything. That wasn't obviously the thing I should've done. I was up all of that night, he slept, and in the morning he noticed something was really a bit off about me.
We went to the hospital and I agreed for a treatment in there. They got me to sleep normally again and I rested there for a while. I went back home or actually my parents' place and the problems continued, and back to the hospital I go. This time there was no choice. After a really long while, my mind started to stabilize enough that I was allowed to return to my everyday life: enjoying my summer break. It was an awful summer. I often felt lonely and bored. But at least I slept normally.
In the fall I returned to my usual busy schedule. And life's good again. This time I will manage my stress and sleep better and take them to account when planning schedule.16 -
By the time I’m able to put my baby girl to sleep, I get hungry again.....
I just remembered, I haven’t had pizza in a long time now...12 -
End of Hackathon. Students and faculty voted on applications. My group got student voted best overall. Now to sleep for the first time since before Hackathon. So tired, my brain’s literally got “background Zoom meeting sounds” - typing, soft cursing under breath, etc) on loop. I haven’t been in a Zoom in hours.2
-
I wish I could tell my dog not to get up from his comfortable position or sleep each time when I simply want to goto the bathroom or stretch.
Like bro no need I’ll be right back..7 -
I hate my freelancer life.
1. No weekends
2. No particular time to close
3. Work for 12 to 14 hours without sleep sometimes
4. Keep explaining the dumb clients about how development is not wordpress.
Its all fucked up. I have no life.
My average Lines of code this month is around 700 LOC/day. Whereas the average that showed on internet is 100 LOC/day.
I have choosen a hellish life.10 -
What the fuck is wrong with Windows?
I put it into sleep. After a while, it just wakes up again.
I put it into hibernation. It boots up again.
I closed anything that could potentially wake it up like instant messengers etc.
Still it wakes up after a random amount of time.12 -
If you spend a lot of time looking with computers then PLEASE use a blue light filter to reduce strain in your eyes as well to help you sleep well.
My favorite program for this is "redshift" and can be set up with this one liner
apt-get install redshift && redshift -O 300015 -
I have to comment, how the fuck do you guys stay up so late and work for so long into the night? It doesn't matter how much caffeine is in my system, my productivity eventually just reaches absolute zero and I can't go on without sleep. And that's being awake for like, 18 hours. At most! I'm frankly kind of jealous.
But hey, if you are that type, just remember sleep is just as important as food and water. If you've been up more than a day, it's probably time for bed. Your brain will thank you. :) </psa>4 -
Here comes the sleep time again. Now I will think about all the amazing stuff that I can build tomorrow and make it big out there just to wake up and do the same thing again and again till I go to sleep and repeat this cycle. Peace.

So, I finally got a bicycle today. Time to start working on my health...
Am I the only one who's daily regime was:
1 - Go to work, sit around for 8 to 9 hours
2 - Come home, sit around for 8 to 9 hours
3 - Sleep for 8 hours
Goto 1?
I was surprised how the bikes these days are so incredibly light. I could lift it and keep it up no problem!12 -
Seriously these assholes just gave me shit over half a day and made me use vacation time for a client holiday recently when I work so many hours that family and sleep are a fading fucking reminder of a different life....
Seriously....fuck you -
You know you've been wired in for a long time and need some sleep when you typed in wrong css property.

I have a neighbor with a really annoying car alarm.
It went off at 2am.
It’s not the first time it’s gone off in the middle of the night (though sometimes it goes off in the middle of my work meetings; variety really is the spice of life).
I can’t go back to sleep once I’ve woken up (doing so, like, always results in getting a migraine).
I am so tired.10 -
...and they said AWS never goes down. Well developers this is a good time to sleep or catch up on tv-series. Enjoy!5

So I had been debugging this code for the past 2.5 days without much sleep and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work.. Turns out I was passing the wrong variable to a method -_-
On the bright side, while debugging I was able to optimise the code and now it runs waaay faster 😎
Now, time to go into hibernation 😴1 -
Project deadline = 7 days
Day 0: start coding
Day 1: few bugs and crashes
Day 2: fixed those bugs project is 30% done
Day 3: ok I have time... sleep
Day 4: sleep
Day 5: sleep
Day 6: 48h coding to finish the project on time.4 -
It’s almost 2am, I cant sleep, I have an early morning class that I’ve already skipped twice this week, but I just can’t make myself fall asleep... I’ve been switching from devRant to Facebook to instagram for like 3 hours just to have something to do.
Thinking about just getting up, making tea, and working on some code to at least be more productive with my time
But I have sleepy-brain and idk if I am even capable of coding right now15 -
So, depression, yeah?
Two good days of work in a row, and on the third, I sleep late and think during sleep and throughout the night, wake up tired and feel shitty and feel a crash-burn in my feelings. (or whatever you want to call it. Burnt out? Tired? Exhausted? Lonely?) So now I have the rest the optimizing sql bullshit project and a paper to finish, plus I need to work more on the thesis. And ofc, work itself.
Everything feels so gloomy.
I know it gets better, but feeling shit doesn't help either.
Anyways, I'm fishing for attention this time so gimme your good vibes! 🙂4 -

The last week or so, my boyfriend and I have been sleeping almost nonstop. It's beginning to concern me - we're always tired. We'll sleep 8 hours, wake up for maybe 4 or 5, and then sleep another 8 hours.
Is this the weather? Quarantine? Are we getting old? We're getting absolutely nothing done and it's awful. Wtf.
I actually have a history of chronic (diagnosed) insomnia which I grew out of in my late teens thankfully. Sleeping *all the time* is much, much worse.18 -
Me: DMs coworkers that appear online after their working hours to check on them and make sure they’re not feeling like they’re obligated to work more/encouraging them to take time for themselves
Also me: Can’t sleep at 4am, so immediately start trying to chase down the genesis of an error someone complained about4 -
I work 3 PM to 1 AM as a daily office job. Then go home and try to learn programming. Wake up next day at 8:30 AM for kind of another work until 1PM. Doesn't pay as much but I have to try. Then if I get free time do some freelance on UPWORK with whatever little graphic designing I know to help pay the bills.
And the fact that even my laptop is dying is a huge blow. Don't know when it might give up. Has 1st gen core i5 dual core, takes ages to load Adobe softwares. I have wanted to hulksmash this shit, but can't.
If I'm lucky, I get a stress free 6 hours of sleep a few days a month. And my depression doesn't help. More sleep should ease me a little, but I can't afford to waste any time. But this is life, isn't it.3 -
3 days 2 nights with only 20 min naps and max 1h of sleep in between. I was finishing my masters thesis. Then I handed it in the next day and everything felt like it is in slow motion? The printing, the going there to hand it in, etc. Couldn't sleep for that day either xD do not recommend. Start writing your thesis on time kids
-
Time for late night coding, debugging, thinking..been busy since I woke up, work, college, exams, work..work while waiting for an exam..
Coffee - check
Cigarettes - check
Music to keep me motivated - check
Laptop still not lagging - check
Will probably want to sleep in couple of hours - check -
Long time ago, people who sacrificed their sleep, family, food, laught and other joys of life were called saints now, they are called programmers.1

I mean, impossible for who? For someone working 9-5 without procrastination, sure there are.
I have been a student and a procrastinator most of my life, so yeah, a 40 hour week's work is possible in two days with minimum sleep.
Also done massive projects in a week's time. If you know what you're doing, it's not that impossible.
Although, I find working with others almost impossible in some occasions, specially where you don't see eye to eye despite however much you try. (time-wise, speaking)9 -
This week's huge fuck you goes to... Drumroll please...
Slack!
You earned this prize for your stupid auto-sleep if there is no interaction for x minutes!
I don't want to install your crap software on my system, so i am forced to alt tab every 15 minutes just to press space and then delete, because God forbids i am being productive on my freaking IDE, second computer, test device and/or meeting!
Also lovely how phone notifications are not sent on mobile unless you are on sleep mode... How could I ever ask for urgent notifications if i take a small break? Oh, right! I should go to sleep mode, so people will think i didn't touch your shitware for 30 mins every fucking time i go to the toilet! :D
Please get your prize whenever possible!12 -
The fact that the sleep function is in the time module and not in, like, the threading module is so stupid.7
-
I have a strict rule about putting my computer away by 7pm.
I've found that if I get started on something, no matter how stupid it is, I will stay up all night working on something. If I try to quit, I go to bed and can't sleep because I'm still thinking about it.
Setting a time gives my brain time to let go before it's time to go to bed.2 -
At the turn of September, my mental health went really down hill.
I have always had problems getting to sleep and feeling that I don’t get enough sleep. So having a day without sleep didn’t feel so strange to me. Usually after that I have had great sleep, the next night not so much, and so. It is often a cycle of good and bad days / nights that gets triggered by too much stress probably.
This time I didn’t get to sleep the next night neither and I started getting really stressed about everything. I had psychosis-like symptoms. I super duper over-reacted to every stimuli and my head wasn’t in a good place.
I posted here about watching news and trying not to overreact and stress too much.
https://devrant.com/rants/2243611/...
Then I posted almost a cry for help where explained the situation with politics and world news. I don’t get it either.
https://devrant.com/rants/2245488/...
So I freaked out for no reason, and I just stressed more about the attention I got from devRant. Then I had a feeling that I’m being followed and thought that someone broke to my apartment. I was paranoid.
I left my home to calm down elsewhere. My dad’s and mom’s house. Didn’t help, and I ended up in hospital. Not too dramatic though. Just resting and trying out new medication.
Now it's better. I have the new medication and I'm having some health studies done on me so it won't happen again.2 -
My experience two weeks into being married:
1. Any other couple can fuck off. We're the protagonists now.
2. My sleep schedule has done a complete 180. I start my day at 7 am now, previously it was 12 afternoon. I also sleep early at 10 pm now. I feel a lot better about this schedule tbh.
3. My wife has an office job, so I get my work done in peace and am able to wrap up my day early to make time for her when she gets home.
4. She's serious about investments, stock market, SIPs, Gold prices or whatever and actively puts money into those things. Good for me.
5. Going out with her is actually fun, because we plan our Sunday ahead of time. I used to scoff at other couples before, but now I get it. It may look cringy from the outside but not to me it doesn't.35 -
Once I tried to install Visual studio 2017 at night time and went to sleep.
Woke up in the morning and it was still installing.3 -
So I've just finished a long day at work (warehouse) from 5.45 till 1.30, got home, had some herb tea, started dropping off, then my cunt of a mate sets a firecracker off IN MY TUPPERWARE, CRACKING THE BASTARD, THEN FUCKING THREATENS ME WHEN I TELL HIM TO SIT DOWN BEFORE I BREAK HIS NOSE. I don't know whether to just kill him or beat the shit out of him, but I'm sick of him doing shit like this when I finally manage to drop off to sleep (I don't sleep well).
FUCKING COCK SUCKING CUM STAIN.
I really want to try to beat the shit out of him but at the same time he's my best mate, what should I do, because I'm FUCKING SICK OF IT?!?30 -
In two weeks of christmas holidays my brain had enough time to fire the guy that was in charge of my sleep pattern and to hire a new guy with less experience that is really trying hard to fix the mess that has been left for him.
Went to bed at 5am...
Woke up at 9am...
I'm getting there!4 -
Windows 10 Rant:
Windows 10 has so many frustrating issues. Most recent being when my computer, if the PC goes into sleep mode, or sits unused for 40 ish minute period of time (screen still on), when I return; awake the computer from sleep or sit back after being away, the WiFi stops working. Turning WiFi on and off again doesn't fix it, only way is to restart the device, which is damn annoying if you have multiple windows, chrome tabs, or programs running. Having to open and set everything back up is a complete pain.
I must point out, this issue only started happening when my device (auto) updated itself to the Anniversary build of W10.
Thanks Microsoft.2 -
I can't work
I can't sleep
I can't eat
I can't code
I can't go have fun
I can't have a conversation
Because I've got a new exciting idea "💡" buzzing all over my mind all the time.
It's been 9 days already and it's still exciting, probably even more. I think that means it might be worth going ahead and realising it.6 -
For me its a good night sleep and have a strict rule not to work from home/not-working-location. It will make the window of working time more focused.2

Question time! What was your first programming job or internship experience like? What I mean is, were you eased in or was it baptism by fire?
Mine is currently baptism by fire, coffee, and no sleep6 -
It's amazing what a night of sleep does...

Devs! Heard about this thing called going to sleep without dreaming about ways to fix a bug?
Whenever I force myself to sleep whenever I get stuck on a bug or confused about the implementation of a feature and started dreaming about the approaches I can take. Most of the time I wake up around 2 or 3 am to try out an idea I had and most of the time it works.
Now I fear this is becoming a habit. Is it something I worry about or ignore since my problem is getting solved?8 -
Is it just me, or is it extremely frustrating that we get so little time for our side projects? I can only manage like 3 hours every night, losing up on sleep.. 😢5
-
Lmao probably the time I worked 150 hours over two weeks (had to sleep on the job) for a project. During delivery I worked 09-22 during the weekend (unpaid) while my boss was out on his boat.4

Sleep.
Usually, after sleeping, the clearing of the mind opens up a lot of possibilities and more often than not, a solution comes quickly after. Happens to me all the time.5 -
Mornings. Not just the run of the mill “I’m not a morning person” but I legitimately would be more productive if I could work night shift. It’s easier to think at night, and easier to sleep during the day. Not just a night owl, but it’s hard to breathe laying down at night sometimes. Sometimes I randomly can’t sleep. I’ve never had this trouble during the day during the occasions I get to sleep for long periods during the day. The morning is prime sleeping time IMO. Not wanting to wake up is one reason, but the changing weather helps and it just feels right.
I also don’t feel awake til the afternoon usually. Even if I get enough sleep and coffee. Code churns slow in the a.m.
I dream of night time being work time with long, restful naps durning the day. I feel more creative at night, and it’s easier to focus. There’s less thought of “oh it’s a nice day I should do x”
Just sucks that it’s not largely accepted and there’s not enough other night hawks to hang out with on my off days. And my work won’t let me do such a schedule. Everyone is an insufferable morning person.
Early to bed early to rise is a load of shit. We should be allowed to sleep at times it makes us happy.3 -
No brain. Half 11 at night is not a good time to learn a new programming language. Please be quiet so I can get some sleep and go back to working on really boring things tomorrow without being grumpy about it
-
I am mostly sleep deprived.. loves to spend time on laptop more than with my family. Prefers coding over cooking. Would love to have partner who relates to this field, so he can be partner in my craziness. Coding has alot impact on my life. Infact it is my life and passion ❤2

Concept: an app that runs on a smartwatch that activates when you disable an alarm (temporarily, not through the settings) and uses the on board sleep sensors to re-enable the alarm so you dont over sleep. But if you do actually wake up the first time, you dont need to disable a second alarm.
I would love to know if this app already exists or if someone is going to make it6 -
I think my laptop is living and hates me... I press shutdown (Yes the actual windows shutdown and not long-press power button) I close my Laptop, expecting it to shutdown, right? Nope... It goes to sleep mode and next time I open it up, it continues to shutdown... It's like it doesn't want to shutdown and is playing a joke on me.....13

!rant, throw everything away
When you spend 9 hour at work, 2 hours in that fucking exploded bus, tries to spend time with friends and family, spend enough time with that one special person, try to sleep descently and manage to work on your personal projects during that two hours in the bus, and that each day, each week, the whole year.
You need a lot of motivation!
But when today I loose two months of work because of a hardware problem and that (because I don't have internet in the bus) I didn't backup on GitHub , I just have lost all motivation and will!
I just can't anymore!

Damn it, it's 3am and I just confused myself with my own code, and edited the wrong file AAARGH
Probably time to get some sleep...2 -
There are a couple of things I like to do before sitting down to code for the first time on a project. Throughout all of this I'm (sometimes unconsciously) planning out the project.
- Clean the house;
- Buy groceries;
- Buy/prepare food & eat;
- Arrange everything on my desk so that everything looks slick as fuck;
- Actually sit down to do something;
- Realize it's past midnight;
- Go to sleep.
Sometimes I wonder if I have OCD...3 -
When you make a typo in a command and spend 20 minutes googling why it isn't working trust me its time to sleep and reboot.4

I'm a young dev with ADD. Basically I just need to stay up late, and then get myself to hyperfocus on my code. It typically gets done in time to get a decent night's sleep.1

1st day of the job tomorrow.
Tried to reset my (broken) sleep pattern by going to bed earlier and getting up at half 5, which is the time I'll need to get up. In typical fashion, I just didn't sleep. I just laid there with my eyes closed. This has happened before, so I know what will happen - no sleep again tomorrow and I start my first day after being awake for ~48hrs...
Fuck you, insomnia.2 -

A friend of mine stayed over and had to leave early. Idiotic as I am I set the alarm an hour earlier than necessary. Now that he's left there's no way I can go back to sleep again, so I've had plenty of time to track translations in p5.js, while my GF's sleeping. Aaah, aren't weekends wonderful?2

Once when I attended Global Game Jam, I worked on a game pretty much 36 hours straight, excluding some lunch breaks. Didn't sleep for 46 hours.
Gotta say, was a pretty weird feeling to wake up to tuesday when I went to sleep like 4 AM on monday. I slept over 20 hours. I remember waking up at one point and thinking that I'm still tired, so I'll just go back to sleep.
That was the one time when I truly 'slept a day away'. -
Sometimes code behaves weird !!.
Spent all night trying to get something to work but now it works weirdly and I honestly don't know what to do anymore as it's not the type of thing you would be able to explain on tack overflow.

Windows... Thou art a fickle mistress...
How dost thou survive the most deadly code written by the most wearied devs yet cannot survive the adding of one of thine own features using thine own "turn windows features on or off"?
Thine face now turns blue each time thou art awakend only to again enter the sleep like death.
Leaving naught but the riddle of "service_critical_failure" each time before departing to the realm of dreams.2 -

Ok so I had a phone interview with a start-up for an internship and didn't get a call, for like a week(actually more) but today they called and wanna meet me tomorrow for work. Problem is, I fucked up my sleep cycle, big time. I hope me requesting to meet them at 7pm won't cause a problem!

Log 1:
Day 10 of crunch time. I have entered a sleepless zen state. Lord willing, I will be able to get 7 hours of sleep Saturday night. The building is terrifying at night, as there are a lot of noises. Security guards are nice, but curious to see me all alone. Must not show weakness in case they think numbers will give them an advantage over me.
Supplies are low. Only one type of energy drink left in the machine, and coffee gone for the night. My phone is out of fast data so Pandora is spotty at best. I have battery to get me through the night at least.
Tomorrow and Saturday decide the fate of the project. My team lead has not slept in at least 2 days. I feel guilty napping when I do, but she is driven like Ahab so I will let her obsession carry her.
If I am alive tomorrow I will report in.1 -

Something "very" unique happened to me this morning/night: I've managed to lose my sleepiness after just 7:45 hours of sleep (interrupted sleep, actual sleep was more like 5 hours). I had trouble falling asleep and woke up like 4-5 times in total. Last time I woke up at around 7:50am I decided to put up some white noise (vacuum cleaner sounds on yt) to relax me and at least make me feel like I'm having a superficial sleep.
PS: I usually sleep 10+ hours without even trying, most of the time I only wake up from bed so I don't feel bad for wasting half my day doing basically nothing. I start work at 11am and even then it's still hard for me to wake up at around 10am, sometimes I just pay Uber to get me to work just for the extra 20-30 mins of sleep. -
When your partner decides right as you are able to sleep is the time to be worrying. No that freckle on your arm doesn't look like a bed bug bite. You've obviously never seen a bedbug bite. Now I have to look them up on Google to prove I'm correct. ಠ_ಠ4
-
I don't know if I'm mentally connected to the other developers in the world, or maybe I sleepwalk and read devRant at night while I sleep, but every time I think something someone else has posted it a few hours before.
Even something stupid like "why the left is called left hand side? Doesn't make sense"1 -
How is that there are so many JavaScript frameworks and fkn no actual way to learn. Tried vue js, this fucker doesn't work half the time, I'm under a no sleep mod tablet, thought it'd help me but I am just raging right now.7
-
2 years huh. well...
1.Have a side business
2.Build an IoT project for home.
3.Refactor my code (Im not saying I'm a bad coder but, if some of you saw my code, you'd probably want to strangle me to death in my sleep, so....)
4. And finally, maybe post a rant/reply with no spelling mistakes so that I don't have to edit that shit every fricking time after I post something. -
As soon as I'm starting a project in my spare time again, I'm starting to dream in code again..
Came up with a solution in my sleep though.2 -

So I'm bouncing between projects.at the moment and trying to get SDLTTF working and yeah, going well.
On that note. I think it's sleep time, 5 hours till I have to go pick up my series x .-.2 -
It’s 2.30 am and I am so hungry. Should I get up and eat or should I just sleep so that I wake up on time and not ruin the day by waking up late.9
-
Never ever have to sleep, eat, shit, piss anything like that. Every damn time I do that I loose the focus/idea I had when I started.
-
Shouldn't there be a phenomenon named "critically timed bug" which always shows up like '15 mins before sleep time', '10 mins before your workplace's leaving time' or even worse '5 minutes before production/presentation'?
-
It's difficult to turn off the brain after a full day of work... you can't sleep 'cos the ideas must be purged or else they will rattle around all night... so you log on remotely just to get it down but proceed to (accidentally) work another nine hours... you finish with only enough time for two hours sleep before you'll need to get up for work again.
-
I really shouldn't use devRant before going to sleep, but that's at least currently the only own and peaceful time I have during week days because of really busy school and work schedule. (Yey, it's weekend!)
If I don't realize that I should stop using devRant at night it moves my sleeping time so that I don't get enough sleep or I won't be able to wake up in a timely manner.
I just immerse in the reading, commenting or even ranting so that I forget the passing of time. Making thing worse is that when I'm writing something my inner perfectionism wakes up and I try to make the text as good as possible and so I get more and more active when I should be relaxing and getting ready to sleep.
Do not worry about my sleep. I'll probably just start to read a book instead. But when it's a good time to use devRant then... 🤔
When or how do you use devRant?
What kind of sleep routines do you have? -
It's 2 AM, and I need to get to sleep.
I am not wanting to compile OpenCL for my Pi in the hopes that it helps this go any faster, but I also don't want to waist my time waiting for this to go.
My current dilemma.1 -
Am i the only one having a strong tendency for afternoon sleep?
It's 5.12 in the morning now, and i am still awake because of this stupid , holiday routine that unknowingly happens on every damn holiday.
I wake up with a sound 10-12 hours sleep at 12 noon or 1 pm, eat some breakfast (or "brunch" , you say) , turn on some youtube or web series, watch it till 2/3pm, then try to study/ code , and then... Zzzz am asleep..
Usually am on my bed full time: eating there , studying there, watching movies there... so maybe that's the reason, but i sincerely don't understand where this sleep comes from?
And then i wake up at 9 or 10pm, eat some more on the bed, back to binge watch till 12 or 1 in night , then eat some more, then binge watching some more , and then when my mind seems to drift back to sleep, i realize i haven't studied anything and then i start at 4 or 5am..(that is , now)
Every fucking holiday ever. maybe these web series and other diversions that messes my brain, but even if am not watching any web series, i am in front of youtube tutorials , stack overflow, twitter , my IDEs,... for almost an equal time.. and the sulking extra sleep routine still happens.
I am starting to think that its somewhat related to being in front of laptop for full day than what am watching on it. whatever this is , I only want to be able to work on my usual holiday afternoon, like i would do, when am in college or some coaching centre5 -
I've discovered the best time for me to write blogs!
6am... Now back to sleep 😪
Hmm... Not really dev related (but the post I will was...) Maybe I should also start using Twitter... But then I need to find followers.... -
Ability to stop time, it would give me enough time to finish my extra projects, catch up on my sleep, and always be finished ahead of schedule.
-
I've been drunk quite a lot lately, yet i'm not tryna forget or quit anything. Am i getting alcoholic ? This create a lot of bad situation going around my life, sleep deprivation, health problem, etc..
Am i thinking my work and my company to seriously? Last time i work too hard, i got hospitalized for exhaustion. My brain can't stop thinking, always getting left and right, here and there. Am i getting crazy?13 -
I just finished working on an obfuscator
Its like voldomort horcruxes with Chinese and Japanese chars every object and every everything 😂 for android and just looked at the time and hoooooooooly shiot ita 5:55 am 😂
The result is just great . Finally i can sleep 😂🤣 -

-
Another curious question.
How much is your hour worth? In average. Mine is no more than $10/hr and probably $5/hr sometimes.
Whether freelance hours or full time salary. So I will know how low are dev getting in my country. And then probably I can cry myself to sleep. 😁5 -
When I close my eyes I see identical objects in array, forming random numbers.
Last time it was a 7.
Anyways, gotta sleep.1 -
If I had a Dev superpower, that would be: Never need to sleep.
Why? That would enable me to finish all my work in time! -
Fuck. Lack of sleep messes up work. I was writing code changes to a build for two hours but I deployed it to the wrong directory every time and then I wondered why my changes weren't reflected..
sleep++ needed.. -
my sleep issues are getting out of hand. i have insomnia and sleep apnea, and materials for my APAP are expensive and nothing that won't fuck up my brain over time (i.e. any sleep aid that isn't melatonin, pretty much all of them make you lose brain matter density over time, and melatonin does jack shit) is strong enough to knock me out. at this point i'm getting one 5AM-4PM sleep cycle a week. i can't exactly fix it as i'm expected to be awake and present during the day, so i'm stuck sucking down caffeine all week during the day to try and be awake for 8 hours. i'm not even employed, so it's sitting and doing fuck all during that time.
goddammit why do i have to go through this shit8 -
What do you do when your family time conflicts with your work time? What can I do to rotate my work schedule forward so I can get some fucking sleep without giving up on either work or my family?
This sucks, I get like 5 hours of sleep at night and my job wants me to be here no later than 9 for whatever reason.
Not to mention my commute is about 45-60 minutes both ways
Not to mention I'm making just enough money to cover my bases. Going to Costa Rica for a vacation is no where near my ability.. hell even driving across the state for a weekend trip would be wildly out of budget.
I've tried asking for a flexible schedule and ability to work from home as needed but its just become a circular debate.
I'm getting burned out and always feel tired, have no energy to stay motivated or give a shit4 -
Music on, use half an hour on selecting project to work on, start working and forget time... Realize it's 4am and goto sleep 😐
-
Couldn't sleep most of the night because was thinking about dependency injection (Spring) and unit testing...
And came to the thinking that pretty much every time you need to create a new method it should be in a new class, wrapped with and interface?
So then how do you decide whether to create a new class/interface vs a private method in an existing class?7 -
I am in school. Talking to the dean of the program he mentioned that there is a programming class that is required. Naturally I inquire about the language in the class and he responds with Python. I am ecstatic. I love Python. I eat, sleep, and breathe Python. Class comes up, and time to buy books. I am now the owner of Windows Powershell Cookbook and Learn Powershell in a Month of Lunches. :-(2

Ever get the feeling of enthusiasm on a Monday when you decide you are going to finish the project way before time but then you sit it in front of your IDE and you just want to cry and sleep.
I am going through that right now. -
I still remember when I installed Android SDK for the first time. A friend told me that it was huge and I innocently assumed it was 5 or 10 gb at most.
So I let it install before going to sleep. Next morning I woke up and had the biggest gasp I ever had in my life.2 -
Getting ready at midnight.
Driving to town at 1:30am to get the bus to the airport at 2:30am.
Will arrive at 5am to get my flight at 6:45am and fly for 2h.
Arriving at 11am local time.
Will reach final destination around lunch time..
No sleep tonight then...
Never taking the early flight again, no matter that it’s cheaper..3 -
I've been running on practically no sleep for the past 4 days, I think the most I got one night was 5 and half hours of sleep with my average being more like 2 hours. Luckily I have broken leg that makes it so I can't work so I don't have to worry about going in but I do have the problem where I'm working on a project to hopefully replace a 3rd party piece of crap we use and I'm dead tired every time I work on it. But I also get great ideas and solve problems faster, so I'm trying to figure out if I should sleep or if I should just stay awake and attempt to push through with little to no sleep.1
-
finally done with my goals for today and i tried testing it out on google chrome and it worked nice, and then i tried it to other browsers.......
i'm just going to sleep for tonight and just do it tomorrow
time check: 4:31 AM here in the Philippines2 -
Fuck you mesa
I installed arch again due to some other mess up (another rant 😂) and this time I was facing problem with sleep.
The system froze every time I tried to wake it up from suspend state.
This is how I wasted past 2 days:
- Wifi device sleep issue, disabling wifi
- Probably sddm issue, let me try lightdm
- Last time I installed gdm, might try that as well
- Had to remove all the bloatware then I suspected plasma
- Checked system logs and found amdgpu error
- Tried disabling graphics using nomodeset, system failed to boot
- glx IP block hung!, it's the graphics driver
- Checked another arch forum, a guy was having a same problem after upgrade
- Downgraded mesa to 18.3.4-1
Worked like a charm though hibernate is still not working2 -
Was watching movie & drinking tea. Operations called about problems with app. 4 hours on a conference call with 3 other Devs..problem fixed.
1:03 am Time to sleep- manager will be expecting full day tomorrow2 -
It's been a few months I became a freelancer, the cool thing is I still have no sleep but this time it's not for deadlines! ... XD
It's for ...
You complete the rant !2 -
Think about how big this project could get. Use version control. Build anything as future-oriented as possible. Use all common standards.
I still have some quick'n'dirty side projects that don't let me sleep well sometimes: "Nah, it will be a one time thing, no body will use it anyway" ... -
A visit to the planet earth.
Alien I: Hey look, look at these things. They work like sloths and sleep like koalas. Wonder how they have survived this long.
Alien II: It's a pity. I told High Commander this is totally a waste of time and resources.
Human: Well, we do have programmers too.
Alien I: WTF!
Alien II: Now, that planet is worth colonizing. Let's get to work then 👽1 -
Question for you fellow ranters. I need to learn some new tech. But sitting down to learn new tech can be tedious. Don't get me wrong I love coding, but I do it 45 - 50 hours a week at. Reserving 10 hours per week to commute and 42 hours for sleep. Leaves me with ~60 hours for everything else. How do you motivate yourself to learning new languages and technologies in your free time?3
-
I'm so tired when I got up. Didn't sleep much last night. Working on a Sunday night till 2AM because I did not work the week on the project I was given.
This is not happening for the first time, I sleep late around 3AM to do my work, as day is too noisy and distracting. Attend some meetings during the day and get lazy in the evenings. Work during nights and then the next day I'm all tired for daily stand up.
How do you people tackle this schedule? I need serious advices.5 -
It's 4am and I finally installed Linux for the first time (Ubuntu, the easy to install one)... And now it's stuck and won't load after login asdasd I feel dumb and I need to sleep.
I really thought I had done it lol "bitch you thought"4 -
When your IDE is installed a so fucked-up way you have to launch it with root privileges for it to start, you can't manage to find a good Git GUI client, and you already wasted 3 hours trying to solve both problems without fixing anything... You know it's time for you to get the hell off your PC, cry out and get some sleep.21
-
few hours back I ranted abt tired body and caffeinated mind, I came back from work and I alcoholized my mind. still the bastard is nt allowing me to sleep. I think it is the time for some phishing the people who are using my free wifi.
-
If you can afford it (time constraints), go for a walk, sleep on it, mull over it for a while. Otherwise, just ask for help.
-
Friday night : oh look at all these frameworks/package/tricks I heard about this week, time to test them !
Saturday night : well I guess I'll sleep better tomorrow...
Sunday night : fuck ! -
So you guys, at what time exactly do you all sleep? Just wondering because i know what it takes to choose IT as profession. 😁
Always AM4 -
Time to burn it in your inner ear...
...
How can we sleep, when the bed is burning!
...
The time has come to say fair's fair, to pay our check, to pay our share!
...
Let's give it baaaaaaack!

I love to sleep a lot and can't stay up too late.
I love cooking meals that take a long time to make.
I love video games, books, TV shows and exercising at the gym.
But I also love software development, and I fear I can't enjoy both worlds.
All of my freelance developer friends always stay up late and never have time for anything. In one hand I'm very jealous of their programming skills and wish I had these too. But I fear I will lose my life to it.
Can I still be a developer and have a life?2 -
So the cocks* where i work have recently started a policy where sleep mode is no longer a good idea anymore. This is so that they can push gpupdates everyday, i.e bogus corporate propaganda such as changing our desktop wallpaper. Like developers give a fly f* about corporate events and wtf marketing actually do with their time. Filled with noisey ass b*.
I wouldn't be half surprised if the policy is enacted by the head of IT. C* refuses to teach any one on his team so this way he looks important and busy all of the time.10 -
Sick at the start of the week end, then there was daylight savings time.
I haven't had a good night sleep in almost a week.
Calling it for the day to rest. Sacrificing half the day to save the next two. -
I procrastinate till Wednesday and then I get this strong feeling to work hard on my shit but at the same time I get another thought that weekend is just 2 days ahead and you ll have stop it in the mid without completing as we rich people don't work on weekends, so we better start at monday but then i do nothing but sleep and the loop goes on 🥲🥲1
-
void main()

escapeMeetings(); //Go home.
startEveningRoutine();
} else {
sleep(1);
}
} else {
playWithKids();
doYardWork();
if( kidsSleeping() ) {
sleep(1);
}
}
} //end main. Like a microcontroller, this forever loops. :) -
All the night thinking about a possible solution, finally got it, code it, push and went to sleep some time, then I realized it didn't deploy and doesn't actually run ._. almost cry, and then I realized the error was that i was using the wrong variable and forcing an infinite loop .___.
-
Just wondering if heading to a burnout is common among us.
I had some responsabilities in releasing an application for the humanitarian comunity last year. Quite important if you realise it can help to save lives in Palestine and Syria, so I was very motivated to succeed.
Unfortunately my manager, a former developer, could not admit we needed time to integrate devs, test, etc...
So I ended up chronically lacking sleep, like few ours per day and no sleep the week end.
... and i finaly just jumped on the first other job I saw to make sure I would not fail my life miserably under a train, because life is not worth it when you don't sleep.
Did you or someone near you experienced that?2 -
Sometime I need to eat and write code at the same time..
And when that happend I bite my spoon with my hand busy at the keyboard.
The question is why I write some text here when I know I can sleep longer..4 -
Other teams not related to my project bothering me with some on top requests not related to my project. I have lots of tasks to do in my project. I'll put those to my client hours and tell my client about it. I will not put those in my non office time because during those time I am sleeping to help cure my illness. I need lots of sleep.
-
that time I finished an urgent ticket, without a keyboard, just by clicking on something on a big screen; stress, think too much and sleep little, is a bad combination
-
there is time when you're bored to death and you don't have any project ro work on, and again there is time when you have plenty of projects offer started.
BOTH CONDITION SUCKS,
I'm only one person who need atleast 4 hour of sleep -
I had %1 of charge before going to sleep last night. My phone was turned off and not charging all night (~10 hours). I woke up and I turned on my phone as usual.
And I have %19 of charge. How is this possible? Does anyone have an explanation?
(This is probably my second time facing this.)
(P.S: Nights are cold here)5 -
This semester I'm taking a class in my university about Cloud computing. You know, how to use the cloud better, when to use it, and we are using AWS in the class. That mother fucking class takes a lot of my time, I couldn't sleep for 2 nights in a row doing homework, and now EVERY TIME I go to YouTube to chill and see a video I GET A UDEMY AD TO LEARN AWS. WHY??3
-
first of all, fuck you Google!
So my phone, out of nowhere, decided to download the backup of Photos and all of the pictures of my ex are WIDE and clear to me. Every time I want to post something with a picture she pops up and seeing an image with her makes me feel more and more guilty, so fuck you google! I hope you're happy, I cannot sleep anymore!4 -
Yet another Windows 10 rant:
Since hibernation is broken (just locks the screen), I put my computer to sleep and went to bed. After a few minutes, IT STARTS UP.
So I disable hybrid sleep, wake timers, Update, etc. Same thing.
I try again... This time, it starts up too, but DOESN'T EVEN RESTORE!!
And this is a month-old install with latest update and no fishy drivers.
Windows really does hate me.1 -
Test your code. Take extra time to do self-review. It'll improve your code quality and position within your peers.
When you enter that "minor change-trial-error" phase. Go to sleep or take a long break. You're loosing time and adding more work to be reviewed and corrected later -
Our Jira does reindexing every night. At that time no issues could be created or resolved.
It just tells us to go to sleep in its own weird way. -
Fucking spent a full day fixing a very big issue.
Very happy to have found a solution.
Time to pack my shit up and go home.
Realize that I didn't git pull.
Seems like I fixed that bitch issue last night when I couldn't sleep.
Since I did not sleep I might have been too tired to recall that.
🤔 Guess I'll kms -
Ever feel like you're in a labyrinth, but instead of a Minotaur, you're being chased by DLL dependency hell?
I've lost more sleep trying to untangle this spaghetti than I care to admit.
Let's make dependencies a breeze, not a brain-twisting puzzle. Seriously, my debugger cries every time it steps into that abyss.3 -
Couldn’t sleep all night again... the last time this happened was 3 weeks ago.. so I’m getting better I guess..
-
My dream is that by the time you're 40 you could drift into the eternal sleep. I haven't yet, but the only thing I know is that you're going to go away. I know how people feel, and I want it all to go away forever.1
-
my sleep schedule is spectacularly fucked. i go home from school, fall asleep, wake up at 1 AM to try and work on my various web app projects, stay up until time for school the next day. this fucked up schedule has decreased my productivity a lot and i have done nothing to fix it. i feel like in the future when being productive actually matters this will be a huge set back for me. any idea how i can fix this?2
-
"well why don't you walk around outside more often if you're so fat" bitch i got college to do and during what few hours I can spare it's usually raining or way too fucking windy. I get 5 hours a week off on average, excluding sleep time.15
-
Not been to any lectures in the past week. Fuck. I just can't seem to fix my routine and wake up on time for any lectures. How do you guys manage time and get to sleep and wake up on time? My routine is royally fucked.4

Management just sent urgent email to ignore all communication with one of the projects. Looks like some companies struggle with the idea of paying the invoice in time. Can't say that I'm unhappy about skipping 9am call, need my sleep
-
1. I don't have much of a social life.
2. I Sleep whenever I get time off It makes me feel better and think better.
3. I don't get in any kind of argument I prefer losing tho rather than ramming my head in senseless arguments.
4. Most important I take a break sometimes too.. helps me keeping my mind Positive. -
ok this is fucking ridiculous.
i had devrant open and my screen went to sleep mode. i tried to unlock my phone and my whole phone froze because devrant froze. i couldnt unlock to my main screen everything was blank. this happened multiple times by now and every time i had to wait like 5-10 fucking minutes for devrant to crash so i can force close it and use my phone. this time i had to restart my goddamn phone so it can unfreeze.3 -
So I have been working somewhere around 35 hours straight, with 3 hours of sleep in between and 'breaks', because tomorrow is the deadline for my university project and every freaking time I fix a bug I make another. Most of the time it's something I just fixed...
I'm currently telling myself not to give up. *bangs head on keyboard*2 -

I was told that there was going to be sleep.

Mondays aren't the best time for me.
If it is a lazy weekend, this is the routine:
Sleep most of the morning in, wake up - do things, 10PM, think of some code to work on. 11PM, yeah, enough energy now - lets code! -
When you're so busy with work that you haven't had time to shower in a week, your eyes have purple sockets, you've had 20 hours of sleep over 5 days and you've missed an entire week worth of e-mails.
-
When you want to improve your life but time isn't enough because you have to earn for a living. To pay bills,l and necessity. It's far easier to find low wage job than pursuing to become a software engineer. Sometimes I eat once in a day and 6 hrs of sleep because I have to improve my programming skills.
-
Though I'm being affected by an suggestion based in a memory forgotten and consequently just recalled the second time seems people who have to push through life don't slow down as fast
Though sleep is good not what I'm talking about1
