I really think DevRant should change "Comment" buttons to "//" or "/**/", or something in that fashion. That would fit well with the increments and decrements :)23

You know why i hate lenovo with a burning passion? Not because they make industrial waste and sell it. Not because they trick non tech people into buying their garbage. No, i hate them because their shitass laptops dont even fit in my rubbish bin.27

Demoing a new feature in the Dev environment.
Me: The images are just placeholders. The communications team are still coming up with appropriate images.
Management: Can we change that image? It doesn't really fit the theme of what we are trying to achieve.
Me: As mentioned earlier, all images are just placeholders. Continues demo.
Management: That image also doesn't really fit with the theme. Can we change that one too?

God... My (l)users are killing me... I think I'd much rather lay on my back and piss up than to get another phone call saying the printer isn't working. How the fuck did you manage to make the toner fit in backwards, Becky?!5

You can’t become fit physically by reading a lot about fitness.
You actually need to go to the gym and put the hours and sweat in!
Same concept applies for coding as well.3 -

Dear sales team please stop promising the customer stuff that doesn't exist within the system and then promising them dates for getting said functionality without discussing it with the product team let alone the development team. Also repeating 'but I promised the customer they'd have it by august' will not make 6 months of development work fit into that time frame!5

Drove 1.5 hrs for a interview at a company which was developing mgmt software for fire departments. They were very pleased with me, as i am with a volunteer FD and a perfect fit in their opinion. I declined after i found out they code base is mostly VB6 and they considered source control unnecessary.
Thanks, but no thanks.2 -

Satoru Iwata.
You might remember it as the former president of Nintendo, but he was also a very impressive programmer. As he was president of HAL Laboratories, he helped with the development of Pokémon Stadium for the Nintendo 64 by porting the Pokémon Red/Blue battle system not by having any sort of documentation, but by reading the assembly source code.
He did so to allow Game Freak's developers (who were only a team of 4 at the time) to focus on their work on Pokémon Gold/Silver. But he did more: when they had to localize Red/Blue for America, they couldn't fit everything in a cartridge. They had the same problem while developing Gold/Silver, since cartridges had at most 8 Mb of storage capacity back then, and they had to fit not only the Johto region but the Kanto one as well! So Iwata stepped in, and created a graphics compression tool which managed to make everything fit in the cartridges.
He did this while not even being part of Nintendo, and the work was so impressive that the Pokémon devs thought it was "a waste to just have [him] as president!" (ie. why not make use of such programming skills).

Dev: So we need around $50-100 a month to activate and use some key services that would greatly reduce our backend complexity. Would this fit into our budget? Actually, we've never really discussed in general what sort of tech budget we have to work with...
Management: UNTIL WE HAVE SUSTAINABLE REVENUE, OUR TECH BUDGET IS 0
FullStackClown: 0? Are you serious? You can't spare a few hundred dollars TOTAL over the next 3 months until our next round of funding clears?
Management: ALSO WE ARE REALLY GOING TO NEED YOUR HELP TO FIND PRODUCT MARKET FIT FROM THE TECH SIDE
FullStackClown: Oh no... we've gotten to the classic point where they think tech is the thing that will solve their problems... abandon ship...7 -

Got reminded of this job search bullshit they say after interviews, when they say you're not "fit for the culture" but they want you to be "challenging the status-quo".

One of the soulless parasitic drones commonly referred to as a "recruiter" happened to find a good fit. Pure coincidence, as he had no clue what the company did, or what the tech stack was.

Turning my 27" monitor vertically was the smartest thing I did all year.

So I found a job that fit my stack perfectly
I phoned the CEO and we had a mini phone interview, it was easy
And the next day I had an offline interview
It was fast as fuck. I answered all of the questions, showed my projects and we were done in 30 mins, pretty good huh
So the CEO tells me to wait a week
It's strange but ok
The week passes, and you guess what
"We can't hire you, you psychological portrait does not fit in our team..."
I'm like bitch, what the fuck
I had declined other offer cuz I though there was no reason not to hire me
Also this is a small company tho, I should've saw it coming 😐12 -

My most ridiculous recruiter experience was the time he called me back to say to me that I'm too confident and... too good for the job. I was so confused ! I had no experience at all, and I was a very introvert person. What a strange way to say that I don't fit for the job.4

Worst recruiter experience wasn't mine, but it was one I overheard:
Buddy of mine who, like me, was older does a couple rounds of interviews at a nice place and gets a call back from the company recruiter. He puts the recruiter on speaker phone so I can hear too.
They are very nice and tell him they selected another candidate, bummer but no big deal.
Hey I the age of ghosting at least they called right?
He is still upbeat and asks if there was anything he could do better interview or technical stuff.
She tells him "We weren't sure you would fit into the culture."
This is a bit odd as this guy is outgoing and one of those folks that everyone loves being around and working with, just a naturally likeable guy.
He asks what she meant about culture fit and she responds "Well you're older..."
He thinks he misheard her and asks again "Your older and we don't think you will fit in that way."4 -
Once a LinkedIn recruiter contacted me about a job position.
The same crap as always.
And then I replied: "sure I'll look"
And the recruiter sent: "?"
I replied back: "I'll take a look and give you a feedback if the positions fit me or not"
BOOM
Got ghosted

Dear client,
Please carefully look at the image size recommendations as it makes your images look like shit. I don't have time to get each image and resize them in Photoshop to make them look decent... I've done my job to constrain the images to make them fit in the box now it's your turn to resize them to fit them in the box correctly -

These days when I go out with friends for gatherings, it feels really awkward to talk with people. Most times I don't fit in the crowd at all. I feel at home, with my laptop doing something, even procrastinating seems worthwhile when compared to this.

Me using numpy.polyfit() to fit a function to some data. Blame polyfit for not being accurate, search the web to find any related problems, as the polynom doesn't fit at all. It kills me when people performing UAT do not know how to test a particular functionality but still mark it as a defect when something uneven happens! We use IMF to build the input using tags. Sometimes they won't even care to know the right tag to fit in the params, but would still mark it as a bug whatsoever!

Does soft-bricking my PC with broken MBRs count?
Otherwise, to stay fit I like to walk/hike. Hate any kind of exercise, unfortunately, but found a way to stay relatively fit by just going walking regularly -
Time to pump some iron. I'm getting fat and will do some cardio with complete body workout later. No excuses. Developers need to take care of their health and be fit! Let's do this guy's

Don't you ever try to translate code from one language to another. Instead grasp the problem and write the solution in the other language itself. You don't want to sit there for hours thinking if hashmaps are a good fit for phps nested arrays.1

The slim hdd that I bought for my laptop as a replacement does not fit! It's a little thicker. UGHHHHHHHH!!! FCK.3

Hello @everyone,
What is your favorite programming language?
And what else would fit to website programming besides HTML5 PhP CSS and MySQL?16 -
One of my very first PR's didn't even get a comment and I worked hard on it...
Feels bad man, all I need is some kind of yes, thanks for this, or no, this doesn't fit the project goals.
After patiently waiting, went ahead and created my own gem! No response sucks.
Why does this happen?1 -
Never been so fit, so able, so sublime.
Being 26 year old, I know it won't last forever, but I will cherish it.5 -
Client sending files containing / in their filenames..

Can anybody point me to advantages of Vs Code over Sublime Text. I have used both fit quite some time. The only thing I see Code do better of support for debugging in the editor. Sublime has the remaining features, often in more refined versions in my view.9

When you jokingly suggest overriding MAX_INT32 to be something 10x larger to accommodate larger trades, then come back to numerous messages about how "the number wouldn't fit into a signed int anymore" and "you can't just do that wtf", you really start to question who you're talking to 😂😂

For those devRanters who are active (or passive) on Twitter, I am looking for fellow programmers to follow.
I am looking for educational, interesting and funny tweets about coding/programming.
Of course if think you think you fit in the description, I would like to follow you too.
Do you have suggestions?14 -

Anyone else loving solarized? Loving it so much that you try to use #002b36 when ever possible? I've even changed my corporates backgrounds colors to fit. Using it for years now and still in love. -
I've already done this week's topic (https://www.devrant.io/rants/703795) but here's my second one.
The Windows wScript API. It's just crappy. The easiest way to use it is to use AutoHotKey, FFS. That's a separate, 3rd party, script language. Not a simplified CLI, not a standardized library. There are both of these things but they barely fit the specification above. Ugh. -
When the program exactly fit on the MCU, using up every available byte of flash. It was just a small display unit, but it felt nice that I had chosen the smallest possible controller for the job.

So how long before someone like @Jumpshot44 or our won @dfox reaches a million +1s on their profile?
@dfox @trogus what is the datatype you guys used, in other words, how much can fit?7 -
Tell them to not buy the ceapest $Machine. They will buy the cheapest and complain why it's not working few weeks after.

Tell them to buy 1TB ext storage. They will come complain that their data didn't fit their 500GB cheap ass solution and, clearly, it's your fault 'cause 500 > 1 ...(sic!) -
No, friends and family, just because I code doesn't mean I'm a software engineer, or "in IT" and no, websites don't resize themselves to fit mobile devices with fekin magic, that's what we do as web devs, we MAKE that magic

How fucking hard can it be to show a simple image. Guess which app has this feature.
Images are cropped to frame, but you can tap to fit the whole image to frame instead. No way to see the image on full screen. Pinch to zoom works, but it will immediately unzoom if you let go even one finger.4 -
If a developer made a database design choice (too short field length) 3 years ago on a project, should the development studio or customer be expected to fit the bill for any time taken to fix.
It was only small so we did it for free, but I just wandered what's the norm?12 -
The DataEase system that tracks escheated funds I wrote in the last millennium that lives today! The entire system can fit on a 3.5” diskette 😀 Does anyone remember DataEase? Popular dbms eons ago. Fun fact - Microsoft wanted to buy them to be Microsoft Access but they turned down the offer. 😫

I started a months ago in a new company and I grab a horrible legacy system and what makes me more angry is they know the code isn't code and isn't fit our new reality but they don't want to refactor the same.
So which more features we produce more bugs comes along because the legacy code bugs still on there.4 -
My last workplace would fit to that tag quite well.
CTO who was also in charge of firing / laying off people is a code nazi that forced everyone to use some absurd code styling. -
My pm just had a fit because the website is different on the stage environment compared to prod , quote : "thinks it is unacceptable"... Is it too early for booze 😐😐4

Spent almost a month writing real time sync between two platforms for client. Changed it n times to fit their custom conditions. They tested it for real time sync.

I wasted all of yesterday trying to create a business object in staging which can't be created with the admin panel instead of modifying an existing one to fit the case I was testing, because i forgot that this is staging and just assumed that existing objects are not to be touched.
Flu Brainfog sucks.1 -
Was a tad depressed yesterday and couldn't get any serious work done, so I start doing random chores to distract myself. Fixed my urxvt extension to correctly toggle fullscreen on and off, and then I remember that the reason I have a black desktop background is I couldn't stretch the terminal to cover the whole screen, so it looked weird.
Well, not a problem anymore, so let's have something more colorful. I have this image of the eastern veil nebula laying around, for no real reason other than I thought it looked pretty. Used to be my desktop background. Let's make it so once more, enable terminal transparency, turn opacity down to 82%; now I have something other than code and the void to look at.
But curious as to what this nebula is, I g*^gle it out. I don't believe in astromambo, but I do find it funny that it's in Cygnus, because that's a swan, and the mascot for my projects is a swan too -- not because of the constellation, but because I suck at drawing.
See, my mom is a sabuner, I mean soaper. She makes olive oil soap. And we had an old box of Nablus soap in the house, which we kept because it's pretty, and the front of this box had a picture of an ostrich, drawn in bright red. I tried to base my logo on it but it ended up looking more like a swan than an ostrich; I accepted my failure and decided then and there that this would be the mascot.
It's a multitude of little relationships between things I never really thought I could relate to one another. This is utterly random shit and it cheers me up.
Anyhoo moral of the story is nebulae are fucking cool. -
The company is bad-mouthing the dev that I replaced:
"oh he liked to do things in a separate environment first and it took him time to complete tasks"
Sufficied to say he was not a good culture fit, so they let him go.
Clearly I am in a place with "Just do it" attitude5 -
When someone gives you a requirements document that has too many details including table names that do not fit your convention but doesn't give a simple breakdown of things such as when x = y do this.
My job is so much more complicated since the requirements document is almost 3k words when it could be a few paragraphs. -
I once added a scale css-transform with a media query targeting some specific Macbook to the whole <body> of a site.
Some designer came up with a pretty stupid navigation which wouldn't fit into that viewport, deadline was close and the customer wanted to see exactly the layout he had approved. Still feel bad about this :/ -
does anyone know where I can report bugs on here?
just a simple one, if you write a response that is too long, then delete some characters to make it fit, and the remaining is <= 20 characters, it won't post, web version... using chrome... I could get more detailed and reproduce if anyone cares3 -
So my processor fan will no longer fit in my mobo, caused by 3 out of 4 stands broken. I don't want to fry my CPU, so won't be using it until the replacement arrives.

If you are learning to code like me just because a language is claimed to be the easiest to learn doesn't make it best for you. I spent so much time trying to learn python and struggled but switched over to Java which is definitely more complex than python but I've actually been learning it better. Find what's best for you!

Who is going to tell Netflix that not every title need to be a 10 part series? A story that should fit into an 1 hr (maybe 2 max) is padded with unnecessary stories to be a 10 part series of 1 hr+ per episode.2

Not something that's happening. Just remembered a debate I had with a coworker from a long time ago regarding hiring and diversity.
Assuming there are two candidates.
Objectively one is slightly worse than the other (let's say 10%)
but the objectively better candidate is more of the same as your team (In terms of stack, gender, ethnicity)
Obviously if one is a lot better (say 30%) I'd hire the one that scores higher.
However, in this scenario (~10%). I think I'd hire the person that offers a different perspective even though they may be less talented.
My reasoning is the team needs someone that thinks differently and looks at a problem from a different box. Otherwise it becomes too easy for my team to go down a path that we like but isn't necessarily better.
What say you?13 -
Shits ridiculous
So much of my goddamn time wasted
Perfect idea really
Gradually grab all pixel locations that fit space constraints
Remember finishing this script and watching the areas populate
Purpose ? Extract shapes to feed my damn neural network for custom character recognition
So much goddamn time wasted
Bastards I hate you all !3 -
Ever spent too long coding around a limitation in a piece of code further down the stack, blissfully unaware that this particular piece of code resides well within your team's scope and that you could have just extended it to fit your needs? Side note: Senior engineers don't appreciate you wasting their time...1

"Designers tend to overvalue differentiation and originality. We are taught this in design school. The best solutions are created ex nihilo, break new ground, resemble nothing else in the world. Everyone wants to stand out, or else what’s the point? But this isn’t true. Most people don’t want to stand out. They want to fit in. More precisely, they want to fit in with the people they like, or want to be like." - Michael Bierut

I started wondering where does all the bullshit fit inside my body? How can 1 human have such trillions and trillions of bullshit storage? Got called by a recruiter, the team wanted to know if I am culture fit. They schedule a remote skype interview for 3 hours and check if I am culture fit. Next is onsite interview, they asked me if I want to fly to that location which is 2 hour technical. And one of the guy in previous round mentioned they dont give offer unless they do onsite. But I have to pay out of my own pocket expense. I am approx 4 years experience and the position is Senior SW. I dont know are they really interested?1

My first interaction with Computers started in 1996/1997 and it was Dangerous Dave, PacMan, Mario, Pre that pulled me in so deep. We had multiple Floppy Disks and each of them used to go awry after a few months of use. Had to keep deleting stuff to fit all my Favourite Games
A year later I learnt the basics of MS-DOS and GWBasic. Looking at seniors do C Programming on Borland Turbo made me feel scared and one of them said it is the real language to make Games, and all types of Animation stuff. I was very intrigued but only for a while. I kept playing Games which was what I was fit for at that time -
