It saved me from suicide.
You have to understand first that things in India work differently. Academics are not personal, but a social business. Academic competition in India is very high and not in a good way, or for the good reasons.
As a teenager was sent off from my home to the other side of the country. I didn't like it. My studies suffered, and I failed my exams. Came back home and faced months of emotional abuse (guilt trips, scornful comments, plain insults) from my parents, neighbours and relatives. Indian society is just built that way. They didn't know they were damaging my psyche, or they were too angry to care. Lots of other shit (lost friends, lost love) happened at roughly the same time period and everything started to fall like dominos.
I fell into severe depression. Lost appetite, lost sleep. Nothing mattered anymore. There were mornings when I would wake up and not get up from my bed for hours, and not even move a finger. Self-hate became the motto of the day. I became violent and anti-social. I would either be angry or trying not to break down and give up all the time. Many a night, I considered suicide. I would end up googling for easy ways out to take.
But what gave me a way out of the pains of my reality was programming. It helped my keep my head, figuratively and literally. It kept my mind distracted and gave me a sense of purpose. I would shut myself in, plug in my headphones, shut the world out and just experiment.
I am not saying that I am the best at what I do, but those sleepless and troubled nights, and many other similar nights over the years have given me a definite edge over my colleagues.
Even today, when everything is falling to pieces, I know I have something to fall back on. I still get episodes of depression every now and then, but I know I can always pick up a new project and distract myself. It probably isn't healthy, but eh...
I am alive. I code. I kick ass. My colleagues respect and value my opinion. I love my job.
Computer does what I tell it to do (mostly :p) and I feel good. Because for that small moment, I am in control of everything. For that infinitesimally small moment of my average, boring, and somewhat painful life, I am God.51 -
The hardest part of being a programmer wasn't the education, the self-teaching, the sleepless nights or the hours of agony trying to fix a bug that would break a program I'd spend weeks working on.
It's the realization that my family, friends, coworkers...nobody understands at all what I do. They don't know of my failures or my triumphs. I can't talk about it with them and it's becoming more apparent to them that it's taking up more of my life. And in a way it feels like a part of myself has just become, well, alien.
Best way I can describe it is, it's like the "Tears in the Rain" scene from Blade Runner.
I'm stuck, I think. I know I've been shutting out people from my life more and more as I don't want to "deal" with people's issues, but I don't think it's been good. I'm can verify that I'm depressed beyond my normal levels.
It's time for me to make an appointment with a therapist.
Remember that you are loved here, and appreciated. Don't let anyone tell you different.
Stay strong.25 -
Every fkn 3 to 4 days, some random dev shows up in my office really really fkn confused and frustrated about something he doesn't understand - because I have a dark secret.
Sometime, in cold lonely nights, when no one is watching, I write my documentation before the actual code.
Somehow, sometimes documentation without code attached to it makes it to production.
Today someone yelled at me for wasting his time because he wasted 3 hours trying to find the code the documentation belongs to - and demented I stop the practice from now on.
Agh.13 -
100 applications did not do the job. 1 night out did...
After approximately 3 months of endless applications, interviews and rejections i was feeling depressed. One of those nights i went drinking and ended up in a club at 3am...i was tired. I wanted to leave. My gf wanted to stay and tried hard to convince me. As part of that effort, she introduced me to a guy who she claimed to have similar interests with me.....
....4 hours later...I got the job. I am now writing this story from my office...11 -
*me, coding at a pub*
*random dude walks up to me*
He: "what are you doing? Programming? What?"
Me: "yup. That's a horizontally and vertically scalable webservice, that's using amqp, rest APIs and encryption to schedule starting, stopping and autoscaling of a total of 90 heroku applications. This webinterface *showing* allows you to trigger starts and stops manually and monitor all processes."
He: "oh, so you are programming a Website? In HTML?"
Me: "euhm........ Yes."
I understand this dude had probably no clue what I was talking about.. Yet I am angry at him. Reducing more than 12k loc to HTML... Go fuck yourself.22 -
“Start your own company” they said
“It will be fun” they said
“You’ll be your own boss” they said
Idiots forgot to mention how hard it would be. Late nights, early mornings. Client searching...
It’s all good though, locked down three well paying clients today. Drinks on me 😎8 -
A few years back, there was a super repetitive task I needed to do to create a bunch of new screens for a new feature.
The task was so repetitive that I just couldn't bring myself to do it, and was avoiding it as long as possible.
Finally the day came where I needed to get it done. I sat at the computer readying myself to finally start/finish the task.
As I was going through the files, I could see all the work had already been done..? Confused, I opened up git history, and saw that I had checked the files in a few nights back.
Best I could do was trace it back to a house party where I was the last to go to sleep.
That was the day that I realised the power of auto-pilot :)1 -
When I was in 7th grade, my neighbor (a DoD programmer) challenged me to write a sorting algorithm for a hypothetical super limited environment (he said a satellite). It didn’t have any built-in sorting methods, had very limited memory, slow processor, etc. so I needed to be clever about it.
It took me a few nights before i found a solution he liked. The method I came up with counted the number of occurrences of each number in the array and put them in the appropriate spots in a new array. This way it only required O(2n) running time and 2n memory.
I just learned today that this is called the “counting sort” 😄
I’m proud of little 11 year old me.20 -
Second semester
Java - OOP Course
We had to write a game, an arkanoid clone
Neat shit
And a fun course, mad respect to the Prof.
BUT
Most students, including me had this ONE bug where the ball would randomly go out of the wall boundaries for no clear reason.
A month passed, sleepless nights, no traces.
Two months later. Same shit. Grades going down (HW grades) because it became more and more common, yet impossible to track down.
3 months later, we had to submit the HW for the last time which included features like custom level sets, custom blocks and custom layouts.
So before we submit the game for review, they had pre-defined level sets that we had to include for testing sake.
I loaded that.
The bug is back.
But
REPRODUCIBLE.
OMG.
So I started setting up breakpoints.
And guess what the issue was.
FLOATING FUCKING POINT NUMBERS
(Basically the calculations were not as expected)
Changing to Ints did it's job and the bug was officially terminated.
Most satisfying night yet.
Always check your float number calculations as it's never always what you expect.
Lesson learned, use Ints whenever possible.18 -
- Wife logs onto uni website Saturday at 11pm to drop an elective, drop deadline is Monday
- Goes to course list and chooses course to drop
- "Course modification is available Monday-Saturday from 6am to 10pm"
😑 are you kidding me..
Like 😡😠 websites don't have business hours! Servers don't need nights or weekends off!! It's ridiculous to think that someone had to code this block for these hours, more effort than just leaving it always available.6 -
Girlfriend got me a fidget cube for Christmas. I have yet to put it down. This is gonna come in handy for some long nights in the future15

PHP sucks
JavaScript sucks
Python sucks
C sucks
C++ sucks
Apple sucks
Microsoft sucks
Linux based operating systems suck
Vim sucks
Emacs sucks
$IDE_OF_CHOICE sucks
Docker sucks
The way we talk about our tools makes we wonder why we do programming in the first place.23 -
I've resigned 3 weeks ago. I have also completed my handover process.
Yesterday I was told that I have to work in the weekend and at night because project delivery date is the following week.
Kindly I responded that I have resigned and working on weekends and late nights won't benefit me in anyway now actually I wasn't benefiting from working on weekends and late nights even before my resignation.
Project manager is pissed off at me.
Oh well, it is what it is 🤷8 -

I am so damn happy right now 😁! Finally I 🎉 released 🎉my own PHP Framework after countless sleepless nights. I'm happy that I want to spend more time looking at my open source project, surfing on same pages than going to bed. LOL! 🤣
Anyway if you're interested please pay a visit on the link below. I will humbly ask your support—a few stars and forks will keep me motivated 🔥 on improving my project. Thank you everyone!
When it comes to PHP frameworks one is forced to choose not the best one, but the least evil.

Why do people (Some devs too...) bloody hell think that devs have Hard time fixing the Semi Colon issue, we have a lot of other issues to figure out, like the Structure of Data, Code Fragmentation, API Creation, Invalid Data Handling, Injection Prevention. But no, since we are developers, we are having sleepless nights because of one fucking semicolon? FUCKING NO, it hardly takes 30 seconds to figure out that there is a missing semi-colon. Really People, stop the ; thing!10

How did I learn programming?
When I joined college I was literally the dumbest in the class... I didn't even know what is a char and what is a String.. Our lecturer made fun of and humiliated me in front of the whole class....also my parents barely afforded my college tutotion fed...
So one night I sat with myself and reevaluated myself and decided that no matter how hard it is gonna be, I must become an excellent programmer....spent restless nights and days learning the core of programming in c++ then switched to Java *best day in my life* and also learned Android development.. And later JavaScript "mostly worked with jQuery and AngularJs*
In my final year project I built an Android web browser that even the lecturer that made fun of me was impressed by..and my app was rated the best project of that batch.
Now I'm working as a Java web dev and made a promise to myself that I'd learn something new every day.8 -
I got my first own office... We did it. We just painted our mini Iranian office in two nights and we about to code it,has 5 min distance to our college and it's a golden opportunity to work and study at the same time.8
-
Just woke up and had a shower. I can hardly keep my fucking eyes open.
Only three nights to go. Yay for being the on call/disruption engineer 😑7 -
I just hate how non-developers can easily conclude that we are drug addicts. Just because we talk to ourselves while coding or always seem off/cranky because of the countless sleepless nights. I mean like, please be a bit more considerate. It may seem like it isn't a big deal since it isn't true anyways but it clearly shows that they can't understand our situation.
Try being in the shoes of the misunderstood for a change. You won't like the feeling since all you ever wanted to do was good.5 -
I've been a lurker for a long time. However, I decided to make an account to let you guys know I use Arch. Thank you for your time.10

What the shit!!!
At 11:00
While studying
"ah... I'm sleepy, can't tolerate any more", and just go to bed.
At 11:05
While scrolling rants
"hahaha... So true, same happened with me.. bla bla...."
At 12:47
Doing same thing from last 1 hour 40 mins
Even not sleepy yet!!!
It's too addictive. Having so much good posts, much better than fb feeds.... Loving the rants... New experience3 -

It's one of those nights again. It's so hot that I'm constantly sweating my fucking ass off and its near impossible to ventilate here. Fucking irritated for some fucking reason and questioning all my fucking life and work decisions yet again.
I don't fucking need this right now. Have to get up in 6 hours but oh boy is this going to be a long night.14 -
Some words of wisdom passed on by our Scrum.
1. I am responsible for setting boundaries. Work time, sleep time, family time, me time. If I don't set them properly, things WILL get unbalanced very quickly. (And I would add, burnout will follow closely).
2. Being productive isn't about doing more and more in less time. It's about doing only the most important things well, and either saying no to the other things, or finding another way to get them done. (Prioritize!)
3. I can't win (let alone run) a marathon by thinking of it as a 26 mile long sprint, or a week as a five day sprint. (Eat a digital elephant a byte at a time).
4. Loved ones are good judges of when things are in and out of balance.
5. Taking time off is essential. Vacations, yes, but also nights and weekends. (Or you WILL burn out and hate what you do).
Comments in () are mine.1 -
I have been in this field almost 13 years and experienced multiple burnouts. But now feels different.
I miss those days when i spent all nights doing programming on junior high school.
Once you turn your hobby into a profession, it may ceases to be your hobby anymore.13 -
I was in college studying stuff I couldn't care less about and had a job that was consuming me. A couple of colleagues and I then decided to open our own company. Four years of sleepless nights later, all colleagues left. I had lost touch with family and friends, had lost a girlfriend and had been left with all the company's debt to pay. Going back to my old career seemed like the only option, but I couldn't let me sabotage myself again. I sat my butt in front of my sister's computer and downloaded every coding class I could get my hands on. Getting used to sleep deprivation helped. Eventually I built my first app and landed my first freelance job. All hat in hand, I told this company I didn't have much experience and they told me they'd hire a senior developer as well. It was on a Sunday morning, at 4am, with the deadline breathing down our necks, that the senior developer had jumped ship and the company asked me if I could take over the project. That moment I realised it's all about being competent. That moment I knew I could do this.5

Project manager: We have 13weeks for this project. We have promised the client.
Me: okay, why wasnt I consulted on that commitment?
Project Manager: yeah.... we have to do it
Me: okay, if we have 2 dedicated backend and one full time frontend - ONLY on this project.
Project manager: (with the face of lies) yes yes sure we can do that.
6 weeks later, after continuous interruptions. Frontend is behind because he was only on the project to an amount of 2 weeks of the 6 weeks.
Project manager: Are we still on time?
Me: *looks around for prank cameras* no the f#*k we not
Project manager: can we put in weekends?
Me: its 2019 bro, that ain't happening
*But because I am a nice guy, and dont like taking Ls, we will have it ready. Just not gonna tell the project manager, he deserves a few sleepless nights *7 -
It happened 2 nights ago.
We had a whatsapp project for the distributed application programming class, my project mate and me were coding for 2 weeks whole day to finish it, especially with the end-to-end encryption feature that teacher asked, till 2 nights ago the project was trash, the private chat wasn't working and and nothing else is done we had only the UI, we was really doomed especially we had 1 more day to deliver the software, and we decided to deliver the project as a trash and get marks from the UI and the presentation.....
Till the night before deadline at 8 pm
I wanted to try fix some interface pictures and to make it better......
The next thing it was 6 am and the project is full working..
When I told my project mate he was not believing, I had to swear multiple times fot him and hat to go and show him the project by the eye.
We delivered the prohect and got 22/25 😁😁😁
It was incredible I didn't believe my self at first place.
Sory for the long story 😓.3 -
Dear Windows,
All I wanted was for you to live in harmony with my Arch install on my laptop. I appreciate both of you guys for different reasons. You guys did okay for for 2 weeks. Then, when I was using you, you blue screened quickly and rebooted.
On reboot, the BIOS couldn't boot. I reboot again, but instead of my normal GRUB menu, it just goes straight to you. I call for Arch, but only you responded.
I understand you are a bit possessive, but you really need to learn to play with others.
You are in time out until your brother is fixed. Now nobody is happy.9 -
When I was 23 or so, I worked nights in a tier-1 control room. Each workstation had a win98 desktop, and two HPUX workstations running CDE. I read all of the lord of the rings in text files on the HPUX machines, and since it was in an xterm window, my supervisor thought I was just tailing logs.7

$50,000+ Computer Science fucking diploma, yet here I am on a Sunday evening doing data entry coz there is no one else to do it!11

For my school coursework, we have to create a search facility, now the problem is my class weren't taught this. So 3 sleepless nights and with basically no knowledge of Javascript, I create it. Now, I like my classmates so I don't want them to fail, so I distributed it to them with clear instructions and told my teacher that I'd done this. They asked for my help anytime it crashed but no-one said thanks, they just treated me like an easy route to a pass. I went onto my school private development forums and it turned out my teacher had created a tag for me called 'Unsung Hero' and made a UH appreciation thread that I could read but others could only type their own post. People in my class were praising me for what I'd done and how much I helped. I understand why I do development and why I'll never stop.9

It was friday evening and almost everyone in office had left. I was assigned a bug related to some of my code changes. I called my senior to help me debug (has three years of experience, whereas me having only one year exp, who is also a very good friend of mine *always helps in debugging*).
So the code goes
switch (someEnum) {
case One:
doSomething()
// no break
case Two:
t.x = someEnum
break
case Three:
.....
}
I had recently added new enun One and was reciting the code logic to him as we were looking through code.
Him: Hey you haven't set t.x in case One. How did you miss that?
Me: No look, I haven't but a break on it. It will go ahead and set it in next case.
Him: What are you talking about? if the someEnun is One why would it execute Two case. Lets copy that line up there and try it locally.
Me: No no no wait. Are you saying that groovy doesn't need breaks in switch (Me being new to groovy but good with Java).
Him: Why would you need break in switch case even in Java?
Me: *stares at him*
Him: I'm going to execute a psvm right freaking now.
Me: *while he writes the psvm* Why did you think there were breaks in switch in any code?
Him: Shut up. *writes psvm code cursing me everywhere*
*executes code*
No way. Really??
Me: Tell me why do you think are there breaks in switch.
Him: I though they were to get you out of switch block and not execute the default block.
Me: So were you coding switch until now without breaks?
Him: I don't know man. I'm starting to doubt all the switches I have ever written.
Me: Anyway that's not the problem, so moving on.
*a while later*
Him: If a interviewer would ask me how would you rate yourself in Java. I would be like "Well I worked on various projects for 3 years in Java, but didnt know why we put breaks in switch. So you figure it out yourself."
One of the best moments in office.8 -

I was nights out drinking yesterday. Today I discovered that I've booked a flight and a hotel for Lisbon. I don't remember doing that. 😆
Well... it's non refundable, so vacation it is.15 -
Coding is like pizza
You love it and can't get enough, but you torture yourself indulging in it at nights, wish it didn't make you seem fat and attractive to the majority of the population, and it will never love you back -
I as the "coffeedrinker" stopped drinking coffee and energy drinks. I do not want to be anyone's boss but if you think you can live without them, do it. I am fairly young and after a long period of frequent consumption ( 1 coffee or drink per day), I was waking up at nights or struggling during the days from constant heart pains. Now 2 months later this phenomenon happens seldom and I feel better and more refreshed after my sleeping. I know this is irrelevant but I know fellow devs that overconsume these kind of drinks. At least if you can limit your dose! :) I just want everyone to be healthy and happy! Have a nice day! ♥58

Feel like a god!
I've made an API service that returns a list of countries based on a temperature range that they will have within the next 10 days for spur of the moment holidays.
It even finds you the cheapest possible flight ticket from your location to it.
So many nights were spent raging since I had never touched node js until 9 weeks ago and I have other huge pieces of work on the burner.
Once it's finished and works properly, how does one market such a service?9 -
Once, when working on top down RPG, I woke up at 3am and wrote map moving system. It worked flawlessly. Later had to spend 2 days to understand how the fuck it actually worked.
Ahh nights so full of passion.2 -
Recently I've been working on a side project and I've been working on it a lot over the last week, with lots of late nights.
My girlfriend said to me the other day, "do you not wanna give it a rest for a bit, you'll be starting your new job soon, you'll get fed up of it".
I then explained to her that, programming is on of those few careers where you'll continue to do programme and do side projects, even after a full day of it, and I couldn't imagine it any other way.
I can't wait to start work.. but then I also don't wanna lose out on project time 🙁4 -
Fuck you, you motherfucking fuck. How DARE you have the capacity to sell fake fucking chips on Amazon and make me fucking waste hours of my god damn fucking nights trying to program your shitty, lazy-ass implementation of an EEPROM.
I followed the datasheet specs down to the fucking microsecond just to find that nothing would write to the chip, and then spent hours of my goddamn life trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, making myself feel like a fucking failure for not being able to write 1s and 0s to a few pins. Fuck you, fuck you with a giant horse cock with needles on the tip12 -
I work for healthcare client project in a start up, worked two years straight without a break.
Client is very inconsiderate about developers work-life balance, he always wants to release every features yesterday.
Never had a reasonable deadline, worked late nights most of the time. No one had backbone to control this client from our side.
Its only developers team, no project management, scrum masters or anything, everything has to be taken care by Dev's.
I decided to take a week break from work.
The first day of my leave he pinged me 3 times to change an "from email" address for notification email which no one give a damn about.
I never replied or did anything. But the part of myself is dying of guilt.
Now I can't relax myself completely.
Re-thinking of my life choices atm.
I loved programming since high school, I can work on computers 24/7 without tired. That's how much I love it. Now I'm just tired of it.
If anyone who read this till here. Thank you.18 -
Not a rant, but...
Friday night. Birthday party of a girl friend. I'd rather be configuring mi Raspberry Pi at home.
Those are my late 20's nights.14 -
3 nights of "why doesn't this work?", "what else can I try?", "why doesn't that work either?"...

Want to work on a pet project, but gf demands all of my time. So, I work at nights. Then I get bitched at why I'm always tired and don't want to do anything -.-4

Past few weeks, I have started to work late night and sleep whole day. I go to office at around 7pm and returns back next day 8-9am. I found it super productive.
But, my manager wasn't happy about it and now, she shifted daily scrum at 1 PM and emailed me to make sure I attend it daily.
Now, I have to fix my sleeping cycle... Nights are so great to work. Silent and nobody around.
Now, from tomorrow, I got a new challenge everyday to make it to scrum daily.6 -

Finally, the jeezless present is done.. fuck this shit, where's my booze and my bed?! 😒
Anyway, it's essentially a power bank with LED's attached to it. The LED matrix is at the back side and looks reasonably decent (but I don't wanna disclose the age it's displaying). It's powered through a 47ohm resistor and is directly attached to the 5V lines. Yellow LED's with 2V voltage drop that have each number completely parallelized, and then those numbers are put in series to increase the combined forward voltage of the LED's to 4V. That way the circuit is around 80% efficient (resistor drops 1V, LED's drop the remaining 4V). Other than that, nothing too special. It did take 2 nights to build though.. way too much for a mere formality 😑13 -
When you slog many nights and whole weekend to complete a particular feature and then..

Funniest meeting ever!
Some years ago, there was the regular department meeting where useless news from upper management were handed down. The team I was in was also there: team lead, co-worker and me. The team lead had a new girl and was daydreaming of their nights, my co-worker wasn't quite back from the football match on the weekend, and I was playing chess on my mobile.
Department lead was blah blah blah and when can we do this on your rig? We looked at each other and instantly realised that none had been paying attention.
My co-worker was the fastest to recover and straight-facedly turned to me: "Well Fast-Nop, that's your domain."
I picked the ball up before team lead could say something: "Sure, but schedule appointment is for our lead."
Our lead couldn't contradict us and then had to negotiate a schedule while trying to find out what it was about. *LOL*2 -
We all have those nights sometimes (and sometimes way too often for a while)

my mind is multithreaded but can not physically execute more than one thread at a time.
i.e. i want to say 5 sentences in the same time bc im too lazy to wait and say them one by one after a specified delay of time, so i fuck myself over while speaking.
like atomic regions, i bust a few words from time to time from different sentences i have in mind and it ends up not making any sense to what im saying, but it does in my head.
so this is what too much covfefe and sleepless coding nights does to people12 -
Always use an editor with color syntax highlighting. About 20 years ago I spent 3 days and nights debugging something that was a simple typo error. Since then I always use an editor with color syntax highlighting.7

So I finally did it and quit my job.
The new company seemed to be a really realy nice place to work.
And yesterday I heard that they even allow one colleague to sleep 2 nights a week in the office because rents are high and he otherwise lives far away. They even bought a sleeping couch and a washing machine for him. O.O
can't wait to start to work there!2 -
Wish me luck. I HAVE to launch 10 websites (yes, ten) this week and half if not all of the clients don't know their DNS accounts or log ins. I foresee a lot of long nights in my near future. Story of our life, right?5

I had a week off at Christmas, didn't do any coding and barely touched my computer for 10 days. By Jan 6th I was still getting 7-8 hours sleep every night. "This is great", I thought, " I think I'm going to take at least a month off coding at home". Halfway through Season 2 of Brooklyn Nine Nine, my brain goes, "Why don't you learn some security stuff and join HackThisSite?" And that was the end of early nights.

Was cleaning up some of the old files on my system and found the first ever raycast program I had written.. in c++
This was during a time im pretty sure all of you guys just like me learnt the things that you could possibly do using code.
The experience of the first time I ran this and saw the sprites appear was the awe all of us have experienced in our own ways.
The reason I found this picture interesting is many of us end up losing the wonder and sense of excitement that got us into development in first place.
Go back , clean up your drives .. find your old code. I'm sure there is no better feeling than looking at the past you , writing bad code , with a probably bad language on a bad editor with sleepless nights to get nothing more than the output we wanted.
It's amazing when you realise everything is better when it's simple. -
- Be me
- Been in a new job for 2 months
- Was excited because of 50% salary increase and better position
- Have a new team of 6 devs including me. All new guy
- Market crash
- Top management demands a trim down to all divisions
- Will be left to 3 devs next month
- All the while being asked to
- Deliver a shopify like marketplace from end to end
- Deliver integration with partners for data inventory tracking
- All within 2 months
- Furious when target is not met
- Demands a micro management to every single person on the team on what their day to day schedule
- Demands everybody to live by hustle culture and ready to work non stop even nights or weekend
- Be me
- Been working non stop for at least a month
- Sacrificed weekends and holidays
Beginning to think that maybe the money and position isn't worth the hassle6 -
I spent many late nights working hard and it paid off. I achieved a first in Software Engineering!3
-
Refactored and upgraded a web app from 2013 in a week. Long days and nights of changing horrible jquery selectors I'd written when I was new to coding into nice a nice MVVM structure. Finally shutting down my laptop, beer in hand and sat out in the sunshine.
Only people reading this will know the feeling of relief I am feeling now!1 -
Spent the last days trying to reach paypal tech support, hung on the phone across the globe, with people at paypal CS, who weren't even familiar with their own terminology, read tons of VERY 'straightforward' documentation and it kept me up two nights straight.
ALL because I REFUSED to believe that it is like I understood it between the lines that I read.
Today I got my answer. You can create Billing Plans (rules on which you'll base your subscriptions, i.e. amount, intervals, duration..) ONLY over the rest api, and only when a customer purchases a first subscription, you're able to EDIT the plan on Paypal dashboard!
What fuckery is that!? You have a edit form, but you can not provide a create form?! TY paypal for making me build a whole billing plan manager for usually a one time transaction per website.
I AM SENDING YOU MY PHONE BILL.1 -
The British summer results in restless nights and broken sleep filled with nightmares.
One particular dream last night involved my friends messing around with a ouija board and they begin asking in questions. I remain sceptical and tell them to ask it to reveal the solution to the issues I'm having retrofitting a legacy web app with a new design.
The board disconnected itself. Hell had no answer. -
I think we all know who the Atlas really is.
I've had this feeling ever since I've started my IT career.joke/meme titan overtime sleepless nights we carry the world on our shoulders it staff atlas hard work11 -
After devRant:
The poops were longer
The light was brighter
With devs surrounded
The nights of wonder -
!rant I’ve been with the same company for 6 years, but the past few years things have been continually declining. Nothing has been awful, I just feel like there is very little room for promotion, or even worse, knowledge gains (we do a lot of win forms, c# mvc, vb6, sql stored procs). I’ve been so desperate to learn “new stuff” that I’ve been picking up contract work where I can find it (for nights and weekend projects). I’m excited to say that the company I’ve been doing most of my contract work with has offered me a full time remote position! It’s a 30% increase in pay, all new tech (mostly React Native, ReactJS, GraphQL, Nodejs, python, and integration with existing .Net applications)!
Feel honored DevRant, I’m telling all of you before I even share the news with my family (with the exception of my wife)!1 -
Having a healthy body is good. I go trail running on the weekends usually 1200+ above Sea Level.
On weekdays I just go home and play video games or watch TV. On Friday nights, party with friends in the city.4 -
Working late nights for the most productivity because you're a night owl and don't have to interact with a new colleague/coworker/manager/client every 5 minutes1
-
Leaving work with no bugs in the code! Everything works flawlessly!
Coming back the next day and all of a sudden nothing works and we need to spend the whole day getting it to work as well as it did yesterday.
There seems to be programming gnomes, ruining our code at nights!3 -
Can we talk about something? I can't be the only one...
Code dreams.
What are they? You either sleep poorly, lightly, or not at all and continually repeat nonsensical code that you would otherwise KNOW is wrong when awake, (and it may even be a problem you already solved!) but for some reason your brain just wants you to mull over it over and over again.
I've been free of them for quite some time, but it happened now the past two nights. Drives me fucking nuts.17 -
Scrum. And agile. And people over-communicating. And estimating work complexity on a prototype. And people in general. I like nights, when all annoying people just shut the fuck up and sleep.1
-
I've been working late nights for so long that falling asleep when it's still dark is an achievement for me. So is waking up when it's still morning.1

In case you are interested:
My new job is so damn awesome! I had pain in my jaw for weeks, I got a teething rail for the nights, but the pain was still there. Since I am on my new job it's totally gone. I am so much more relaxed and more productive now.
Life is good! -
After several long nights of learning to resize encrypted lvm partitions, fixing grub, finding screws, and waiting....
I finally managed to move my system files from the old drive to the new SSD.

Director of the company asked me to design an app that's near impossible on Tuesday. Explained to him the constraints of what he wanted, he told me to give him a low down of all the constrains by the end of the week. Gave him a a full report yesterday.
Calls me in today and tells me head office's CSO is coming next week Friday and he wants the app ready by then so he can show it to the CSO.
What the fuck. Guess I'll be spending nights late coding the impossible. (because my actual job at the company has nothing to do with his bloody app).
Communication is key, but when the communicator is flat out fucking ignored, what's the point.1 -
Getting my first dev position. 3 months of boot camp being told I'd find a job locally in no time, only to find out the true cost; 8 months (after program completion), 100+ applications, 5 interviews, two call backs, and a lot of emotional nights questioning my decision to switch careers.
Feels good to have the first year of work under my belt. Unfortunately I'm back in the hunt.
Onwards and upwards!6 -
Sleepless night are often the start of great idea's, if only i could remember them the next day after finally falling asleep
-
Started working as a developer about 2 months ago and on the first day of of work I was tought how to make coffee.
I couldn't understand why is coffee so important to the everyone in the company. I didn't drink the coffee for the first 2 week.
Now after many sleepless nights spent coding i then realise why the people worship the drink so much.
People get very pissed when they go to coffee machine and find that there is no coffee then the last person to have a cup is going to be shouted at and at times even get insulted.
Now coffee is my fuel and cant do much without it.6 -
Worked nights and weekends for a month to launch v1 of a fixed cost client project(ie, we lost money). Launched it successfully with a few 15 hour days at the end. Three days later the client tells us they are outsourcing the rest of the work to India.
Completely felt spurned like I worked super hard to impress a girl and then she ran off with some other guy.6 -
For months I was weak and tired. All the stupid IT work drained me of power to develop cool stuff during the nights.
And then I discovered my wunderwaffe- machine capsule-espresso.
Oh boy that shit is amazing.3 -

Just wanna share yesterday nights story because I really really enjoyed it..
Have been to Galway with a friend.
Went to the pubs and 2 Irish girls tried to speak French - just for fun. A French guy wanted to flirt with them and said: “you British girls are so cute when you try to talk French.”
The girl completely freaked out and screamed at him: “ DONT YOU FUCKING DARE TO CALL AS BRITISH..” and the second girl started singing in the middle of all the people: “Come out ya Black and Tans, come out and fight us like a man”..
Ended with those girls trying to stop other Irish guys from beating up that French guy.
Few pubs later at 2:30am walking to the car (driver didn’t drink) when the “irish Jesus” (YouTuber) walks by and asks us if we have “something”, he really needs to get stoned 😂
Best night ever..
No offense to the British here, I assume you’re familiar with your shared history;)2 -
Assignment release: this is a basic assignment that is supposed to help you understand the basics of memory allocation. You are free to use any design you want, however you can implement more advanced features that would lean towards specific designs. What will be punished is that you don't have a dynamic memory allocator. We will run the tests for these offline after the deadline
2 days before the deadline: we released the tests for checking whether you're allocating memory dynamically, but these tests also check for this specific design. So fuck you for choosing any other design than this one. Have fun on sleepless nights.
Fuck me, I guess, for worthlessly working on a different design than they wished for, but didn't specifically ask for from the beginning. I just wasted 2 weeks of my life and feel unmotivated af to do anything anymore regarding this. Fuck this shit. Fuck them. Fuck this course.1 -
I wanna be a millionaire, so fuckin bad.
So, throughout this week there have been massive trials and tribulations regarding my lack of coding practice however through many nights and days coding I have almost completed the task I was set last week.
I didn't realise how out of practice I was so this posed as a big challenge for me. However I pulled through and tomorrow it will be ready to send for the interview!
I also have another test to do in vanilla php - Typical blog which would be such a doddle now I'm back in the zone. I just have to remember I'm not using Laravel!
The sense of accomplishment is real and I'm so relieved I've come this far. Maybe I will have this career of my dreams which I rightfully deserve.
Below is Stripe, doing random tests :) -
Going on a school camp where all the students in the school go.
2 nights and 3 days, planning to bring my laptop and my phone to make games there. (poor 15yo)
Any ideas not to be seen to the teachers? My loyal friends wont tell it because i promised to bring some old android devices for them to play games.10 -
3 straight days with less than 3 hours of sleep per night. If something or someone wakes me in the first fifteen minutes as I'm drifting off, that's it, my wired for however long.
Previous two nights I just barely slept at all. Last night got awakened twice as I was drifting off. To start with, its ettypre for me to be able to fall asleep at all a second time.
Last three nights I'm not actually sure I even slept. I blinked and it was morning and I woke up exhausted. Only thing I can remember is racing thoughts, as I fell asleep, and the very same exact thoughts *as* I woke up, as if my brain had been thinking the same thing on a loop for a few hours, while I was catatonic and unable to fully shut down, stuck in 'on' mode all night and not realizing it.
Not a single fucking job I work honor's their god damn promises, let alone my repeated requests for night shift.
Was so exhausted yesterday my chest hurt.
How am I supposed to drive to work on less than 9 hours asleep spread out across three days? Cant catch a fuckong break lately, and when I do it's like the universe fucking sabotages me with shit like this.6 -
When it is 645am Friday and you spent the whole week with meetings and tasks and sleepless nights.
You just cannot give a tiny rat ass about the naming of routes and functions.
DO NOT ask me about my variable names!3 -
Little story, about how i get things fucked up.
I've been working for two nights on some project, and we have notifications in slack about new commits, and i've been working for myself, not pulling any commits for this time, cause no notifications 've been received, and then when i've tried to commit&push i've realized that there is 14 commits before me, and someone just accidentally turned off notifications :C1 -
I'm fucking frustrated.
Almost Every project, almost every task I did in the past 6 months has been a failure or partly done. Even the most trivial of tasks take me hours to complete, after immense googling and copypasting.
I know that I'm a junior with less than a year of dev experience but it feels I'm traversing through hell itself. I truly love to program, have tremendous passion and want to be a professional dev but it seems destiny itself wants me to keep doing what I do best but hate(Sysadmining).
When will this nightmare end? When will I be able to accomplish anything I need with code with so much ease, like my dev friends do? How many more courses, bootcamps should I fucking attend and how many more tutorials to watch? When will be able to work at nights without falling asleep? When will I have a fucking dev job and freelance projects instead of being a goddamn server-managing monkey?14 -
Nothing makes me happier than listening to my neighbor's disgusting banda music playing as loud as it can.
No worries tho, the cops will be here in about 20 mins (it usually is 20) one would have expected that after getting the cops called on you for 3 times already you would get the message:
No homeslice. If i want to listen to that cantina piece of shit music on my fucking friday nights I will make sure to let u know :) but I actually have class so no thank you.
This is why Trump hates us (Mexicans) -

Do you also sometimes have these nights in which you don't want to sleep but instead want to learn new stuff?
Right now I have one of these nights again and I have spent the last 1:20h watching a lecture by a German professor about cryptography. Man I can't wait to leave fucking highschool behind and go to university to learn stuff I am interested in.5 -
Ranting after many light years (oops that's a unit of distance)
Damn Damn Damn.
There is complex workflow engine, and the only thing I know is once you fix and get success response from method A(), call method B().
After 2 days and nights effort, method A() is fixed and I am getting success response.
Now, when I pass this response to B()
One data is missing and hence failing.
Where the hell is that data getting kicked out...
I am in a dead end. I don't even know where to look.
Pinged engineers for help but all in vain till now.
Working on one of world's largest system, and I am miserable in debugging with this system.
And the worst part is there is nothing that I can turn off and on so that it works.
(Don't blame me. I am not that dumb. I just started using it since 3 days)2 -
The Cup Saga
My cause is valiant. My warrior's hearts were true... And quite frankly we are sorry if we have offended you.
Background: been missing my favourite cup at the office. I brought said cup from home like many of the devs do, we have our preferences you know? For 3 weeks I have been drinking mediocre coffee and the endless quest for my cup perused... I couldn't find it.. It was just missing.... Where could my trusty cup have gone... Its been with me since my second job in 2014, and its gotten me through so many late nights and early mornings, the reward of the perfect ratio... Turns out... Someone took it because... Well they liked it and habe been holding on to it ever since.... Why? No one really knows.. But I have my cup... And I intend to guard it... Since unlike the other cups it cannot be left in the cupboard.. It has to be defended.... Valiantly we recovered the cup... And tirelessly we will guard it now.. Sweet cup of mine...9 -
Not sure if I'm disappointed or relieved.
Just spent 5 years trying the get into this class. Studying and asking and getting recommendations. I knew it had less than a 5% pass rate but it's all that I've been aiming for for years.
Finally got into it, and spent 4 months working my ass off. Today I got told that I'm maybe being dropped. And honestly, as disappointed as I am, and I might need a new dream to aim for, I'm actually pretty okay with it.
I've been so stressed and annoyed and unhappy lately. I was starting to debate if this is even what I want. And for the first night in a while I can just drink whisky and not worry about the next test or doing classwork at midnight instead of sleeping.... I can just relax and whatever happens happens. I can't control how tomorrow goes.
Not sure if "oof. I need a drink" or "thank god, lets celebrate with a drink!"3 -
I'm freaking done trying to get Linux on my machine. I've tried every distro with many different versions of the kernel and I always run into the same problem on my desktop.
The computer super stutters for 2 seconds ish than freezes.
I've spent DAYS looking into this issue trying to find something. The worst part is that it can happen 5 minutes when I boot or 5 hours. At first I thought it was Compton. Then I thought I installed arch wrong. Maybe an update to the BIOS? How about downloading updated microcode? Maybe this obscure bug with AMD processors and setting power idle to typical? Nothing. I'm now behind on my school work because of the massive amount of time ive spent getting this fixed. It works just fine on my laptop, but it doesn't work on the machine I built to code with. I'm done. Give me Force Lightning, a red lightsaber, and call me a Sith baby because I'm joining the dark side. Here I come Windows.
For those who are wondering my setup:
Ryzen 7 1700
Rx 480
Asus x-370 prime
16 gb Corsair RAM
And no, Windows has never had this bug.31 -
a friend of mine and me developed a mmorpg years ago on friday nights and we were learning a lot of sql on the way. for a tidy nested query that sped everything massively up i got a sudden kiss on the cheek at 5am. best reward ever.1

My office gets seriously freezing at night 😐 stupid uk and its freezing nights 🙄
Really hard to program when it's near freezing9 -
Stupid !
Just 1 cup of cappaccino can make me stay awake the whole night :/
2 nights no sleep , not gonna get anymore caffeine tonight !3 -
Great things aren't developed in one day and night with excessive caffeine and hard work. They are developed in many days and many nights with excessive caffeine and hard work.

All week I was too tired to work on my projects in the nights.
Now it's weekend and I'm still tired.2 -
When my boss called me 4 nights in a row at 3 AM where I had to get up at 6 to go to school, and forcing me to work 25-30 hours a week when the contract said approximately 15.4

I swear my co worker said we were meeting at the data center at 10pm all week! I call him and he says 10:30. Wtf?!!! Well guess I got some time to read more rants.2

Almost a year and a half. I was so overworked and my failures were so impactful. I would go home and obsess over work all evening and have fever dreams on nights that I could sleep. It was so mentally painful that I was going to jump off a building after a few drinks to make it stop. A military turned civilian doctor told me that I showed symptoms like soldiers in prolonged conflict. He told me “quit or it will kill you” without even knowing about the suicide stuff. So I quit the job and to this day still suffer flashbacks and have crazy mood swings.
Burnout is real. Dangerous stress is real.4 -
Voice in my head: You should do something good this weekend.
My body: Yeah let's code up a community fostering app for the neighborhood.....
Two Nights later:
Amidst a half empty bottle of Jack ...
Voice in my head: dude why isn't this shit working, you've done this billions of times.
My body: It's your fault...time to drink you away.
And like that,
At the break of day,
A hungover and glazed developer,
Debugged! as they say.

3 days 2 nights with only 20 min naps and max 1h of sleep in between. I was finishing my masters thesis. Then I handed it in the next day and everything felt like it is in slow motion? The printing, the going there to hand it in, etc. Couldn't sleep for that day either xD do not recommend. Start writing your thesis on time kids

Today we launched the website that I’ve been working on for months. But the stress and fatigue of everything else (my personal life, the sleepless nights) got to me. Even though I got it done and it looks great, all I can focus on is how I ended the project. How I let the frustration of everything get to me. I just needed to get that off my chest.1

Hearing about something I'm not familiar with and spending most of my nights reading and learning about it, you never know what useful tool you will find

Can't sleep because never ending brainstorming/problem solving, any of you guys who suffer the same sleeples nights, and do you have any tips? Was thinking of trying out prescription medications.5

My company have become fucking douche bag! I have been working overtime everyday day till late nights for 2 weeks including one weekend and I got a notice for slow work just because I was not able to work on the second weekend because of health issues. You know you need to stop debugging and sleep when you start rearranging your comments in the hope that your code will work!

Finally got through a second interview with a company that won't abuse me(working late nights, early mornings, and weekends for months now) on Thursday! They even said I did a good job and they like me! Most intense waiting of my life for a call back!2

We had a closed beta today for a product I've worked on for the last 6 months. We've been working late nights for the last week to make sure we get all the kinks out and make sure our demo went smoothly.
After a bit of hyping via a power point presentation by my colleague, we finally start the demo and of course the login fails. Both the API and database were offline. The servers were on but we just couldn't reach the applications. My colleague stalls and I get to debugging.
We were standing in front of 50 people who were hyped-up on a product that was failing in front of them.
But after 10 minutes (felt like an hour) of hemming and hawing, the app just decides to start running again.
What in the actual fuck? Does this happen to anyone else? Coz it feels like it happens to me every time.3 -
After a rough exit from one company, I was diverted into Ops just to continue to have food on the table and keeping the lights on. This, over time, unfortunately made me more or less unemployable as a dev again. Got stuck in that place 13 years doing almost no professional coding.
During the last 5 years I took courses, got side jobs writing articles and tutorials, went to interviews and generally worked hard to get the fuck out of ops and into development again.
After getting to choose between level 1 customer support and quitting in a re-org, I quit without having a new gig. I got a lucky break through someone I'd worked with earlier to start a junior position working on some legacy systems with legacy tech.
After all that work late nights churning away using up my passion for coding, I now can't make my self pick up even Advent of code or Hacktoberfest... My passion is dead... I hope I get it back, but for now I fill my spare time with my guitar...3 -
Be me at work, 12h nights shift, 4th day like that
Following online course on machine learning, instructor says we'll use python 3.x as the interpreter for the project, boot personal laptop and start pycharms, create the file, choose right interpreter no big deal
pip install the modules I need for the course - done, try to import them.
Doesn't work, first reboot, still not working, browsing Internet for answers, no ideas, reboot again (you never know) reload pycharms, browse Internet again, find out the modules only work on python 2.7.
Wasted 45minutes for this shit
Feels good bro.2 -
Finally received my stickers!!! Where should I place the other two?? 🤔 This is a tough decision here..3

Mornings. Not just the run of the mill “I’m not a morning person” but I legitimately would be more productive if I could work night shift. It’s easier to think at night, and easier to sleep during the day. Not just a night owl, but it’s hard to breathe laying down at night sometimes. Sometimes I randomly can’t sleep. I’ve never had this trouble during the day during the occasions I get to sleep for long periods during the day. The morning is prime sleeping time IMO. Not wanting to wake up is one reason, but the changing weather helps and it just feels right.
I also don’t feel awake til the afternoon usually. Even if I get enough sleep and coffee. Code churns slow in the a.m.
I dream of night time being work time with long, restful naps durning the day. I feel more creative at night, and it’s easier to focus. There’s less thought of “oh it’s a nice day I should do x”
Just sucks that it’s not largely accepted and there’s not enough other night hawks to hang out with on my off days. And my work won’t let me do such a schedule. Everyone is an insufferable morning person.
Early to bed early to rise is a load of shit. We should be allowed to sleep at times it makes us happy.3 -
I was developing an Android app during college training. I made the app in three days, actually, three nights.
Three consecutive nights of only coding had its toll on me. I got burned out.
I couldn't even look at my laptop. Every code I looked made me want to throw up. That's how much burned out I was.
Well, after three more days, the feelings of throwing up receded, and I was back on track.
This was my second worst burned out experience. -
Okay so I just went from getting no feedback on job applications to having more appointments than I can manage.... You'd think this is a good thing but how do you do this with or raising suspicion... Guess it means I did something right in all my hard work and late nights....11
-
Coded a project for months, only tested it in Firefox. Then I think about the other users, so I fix everything in Chrome. After this I sent it to a friend to try it out, says not working at all in Safari, Mac. Okay, another few nights without sleep then... 😩8

A couple nights ago I was thinking how can absurdly incompetent programmers exist out there (based on stories I read here), and I think I know the reason. They just don't like doing it, to them it's just a job. They get into the building, work and go home. They learned programming in college but probably never wrote anything for fun. Because of that they don't dedicate themselves to learning new tech, don't try to improve and be good at the job, all they want is the money to be able to survive and that's it. Since they don't have the curiosity to drive them forward, they just don't and keep writing shitty code.
I'm not saying you need to have a bazillion side-projects, work an 8h shift and then go home and spend 3h on personal projects, or that you have to breathe programming and tech. All I'm saying is that, to be competent and good (this probably applies to most jobs) you have to like what you do and have at least some interest in it.7 -
Prepared for one of the best start ups around me. Able to make it in my second chance. Answered some of the most difficult questions asked in the interviews.
Now when it's about the salary, they are giving me a nominal hike.
I mean seriously, my days and nights for this.
Height of frustration when I'm trying to switch for a year now.5 -
Explain to me what is in the 1.6Gb Adroid Studio download because I've spent the last 3 nights downloading a gazillion extra things over my 28 kbps satellite connection and I still have not managed to actually do anything yet.
Silly me, I thought if I get the Studio with SDK bundle that would be enough. Sigh.19 -
It's one of those nights.... works on my machine but not in QA....
Me:Remind me.... why am I a developer?
Coworker: because you're a maschist1 -
I actually have a quite good social life..
I keep at least 2 nights per week to spend time with my friends and drink!
The only issue is that no one of them are in tech. But yeah, as said in a previous rant, i'd like to have dev friends, mentor..6 -
IT teach giving a speech that our MS excel exams are shit and we have no logic and that we suck at math. I mean, yeah it's true that I suck at math and I've never used excel before coz I never had to but ffs I code during nights and I love it, also there are so many fields, saying that you'll be just a part-time waiter... If you have the attitude to solve a problem that you care enough about you'll get there eventually. Sucking at something doesn't mean you suck at everything, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.5

My CS grade came in today and I'm sad because even at my best I could not get through it. Even with all the time I spent in and out of class, and those sleepless nights spent programming into the morning. All this effort and I still couldn't pass this class. My final killed me, and i'm upset because I know this exam doesn't represent all that I can do. It worries me because I feel like I will be told by employers that I'm not qualified because of a number. The number isn't everything, there's a story to every number.8

1 year into the project, spending nights fixing issues, but
today the client realises that things aren’t working out and we need to stop the project. 🙃
Does money, hard work and time grow on trees for you? NO CLIENTS ARE NOT GODS. They’re cuckoo.2 -
I am so sad. I've been having problems with Linux installs on my desktop since i built it. It just hangs at random times and the journals don't mention any problems. I finally catch a lead and it turns out it's a bug with the microcode of the Ryzen processors. There was a possible work around, but it didn't work for me.
Guess I'm just going to have to use Windows exclusively on my desktop. I hope for a fix but the bug has been around for a year. :(4 -
With one of my best friends during university years (9 years ago) we thought about a simple wysiwyg online platform (before WIX or others) to create simple sites . We started working on it , during multiple nights , we got a working demo (we got a nice intership with it ) the problem ... it was written in FLASH (AS3) witch died 2 years after . So the project died with it . I've learned alot.1
-
I've spent several long nights and even pulled all nighters debugging issues patiently. Even the most frustrating and ugly bugs, I've dealt with calmly for hours.
But this. Numbering fucking lists in Word. Why the fuck is this fucking crap piece of software trying to teach me how to fucking count? For fuck's sake, when I'm on level 2 of a list and I say I want 4.1, I mean fucking four fucking point in between and a fucking one. I've been screaming and pulling out clunks of hair for the past half an hour now before it decided to just work.
And now, towards the end of the report, all of a sudden it just decided to change the dictionary language to fucking French! Fuck you, Word!5 -
My body is begging me to sleep, but there is so much caffeine in my blood that brain is not letting me to do so....

Tutorial: How to get rid of your dev?
1. Find a very old (2+ years) jira task that took a lot of sleepless nights to get resolved.
2. Make sure that your dev is still on the watchers list.
3. Reopen to 'change some labels'.
4. Forget to close the task again.
5. Remove the body. Heart attack will get classified as a natural cause.
6. Close the task.1 -
Is there anyone else who's working for a company regardless of day and nights? Holidays or working days? And still get the old shitty pay?
Fuck this job I want to resign but can't do it because of financial problem.
damn I'm hating this situation.
do anybody know how can we build freelance profile how much time it takes?3 -
I’ve been coding for over 25 years, for the last 10 years my primary languages are C#, C++, Xaml. Prior to that I used to develop web applications.
Just recently, I’ve totally lost my motivation to code, I used to come home at nights and do stuff for myself, at work i used to develop utilities and apis to help everyone, some of which have been made production ready and released.
Now I just cannot be arsed......
I need to get out of this rut.
☹️😢14 -
So I live in the south. And it’s been pretty cold here the past few nights. And now there’s a gaping hole in my laundry room and water going everywhere and a plumber who seems to still be reading the README.md file. And my kitchen is flooding. And my gf is losing her shit. And I’m drinking coffee sitting at my bar, checking emails. Somebody wake me up.9

2am: I can just go to bed at 4am and get 4 hours of sleep and be fine
4am: Eh, I'll just sleep at 6am and take a nap before work.
6am: Who the fuck needs sleep? That's why I bought coffee -
The Online Marketers I work with sometimes ask how I know so much about certain things.
Well, while you guys were partying in your late teens/early 20s and playing sports with your friends, I was sitting home on nights and weekends learning about computers, networks and code.
It only sucks they make a shit ton more money than me and work about 4 hours a day.
At least I'm making more than most of my peers and probably 90% more than people I went to high school with.2 -
I guess I should relate what work experience I have: my internship.
A little backstory I suppose. It's required at my school to do an internship to graduate except under certain circumstances. They encourage work experience a lot where I study. It was around time for me to apply for internships. However, the closest I got was a phone call with Amazon that I biffed when they started asking about stuff like sorting algorithms and other Big O notation stuff. So I was pretty desperate. I found a small company that were looking for internships and got an interview with them. The pay was dirt (I made more as a crew trainer at McDonalds) but I needed that internship and they were only 10 minutes away.
Immediate red flags when I showed up to the address. At first I thought I was wrong, But I noticed the sign of the company pointing up some stairs that were installed on the side of the house I was in front of.
Interview was a bit weird. It was with the CEO and the marketing manager. Again red flags. I show up for work a week later.
Turns out, they have no full time developers. 1st day was getting my workstation ready and 2nd day I was running Ethernet cables to the basement where the phones were connected. Spent around a week doing that.
This was supposed to be a Software Engineering internship?? Excuse me?? I came here to learn how working on Software is supposed to be like! I was also their "tech support" both for their computers and their crappy software that was built 16 years ago that people still pay for that I had NO idea how it worked because I just started and NOBODY taught me anything! To make matters worse, even if I wanted to delve into the code to see how it works it was all made in ancient Perl which didn't make things any easier.
But I needed that internship to graduate. And thus begun my 9 months with them and boy howdy I have stories to tell. Stay tuned in the future.3 -
It sucks big time when you've put in days and nights on a particular project and later face flak for not delivering it on time. What can I do that it took time 🤷🏾♂️
I did not purposely intend to lose business hours, I only want to do my work properly with the full (or atleast some) knowledge of what I'm doing !
Guess I just had a Bad day 😅9 -
Being the sole contributor to a project is such an experience. After endless nights of bug fixes and brainstorming, I have breleased my app to play store.
Currently it is Alpha phase . I'm getting some positive feedback as well as some great comments from my friends . Really looking forward to release the project in production soon15 -
Okay I give up. I just don't get this docker networking stuff. I need someone to save me these sleepless nights and get on a call with me. A docker expert please. I am dying and my make believe devops engineer persona is crashing on me.15

My weirdest dream about programming?
I was sitting with my buddy and we were programming, and literally, verbally arguing with compiler that he should compile, and he was spewing out different errors each time we compiled, and it somehow matched our arguments, so it literally was "replying" with different kind of errors ;-;
I mean, we didnt change code, but tell to compiler "no, no, no, you dont understand. This error is wrong, becouse here and there is this and that and it just should work" **pressed compile again and gets different errror**
Yes, that was after few nights of c++.
Edit:
yes, in that dream compiler was spewing out bullshit errors that didnt made sense.2 -
Anyone just have like a weekend where they stay up really late doing nerdy things or work on their personal projects? I sometimes find myself on certain weekends that I just work on a bunch of personal code, websites, or even if it is changing my accounts around.5

They say nightmares are bad, but have you ever solved a bug that was bothering you for a long time in your dream, only to wake up and realize it wasn't real? Worst feeling ever. And this happened three nights in a row. For three different bugs. You would think that after the first two nights I would know better, but yet again I was fooled.3

I'm currently working nights, away from home, and have no time for programming. God I miss programming... So much.2

Past nights: clear sight on the yellowish moon
Yesterday: freaking heavy rain! Until 4am.

I've submitted a PR to a large open source project, and I've had no feedback in over two weeks.
I spent a weekend and many late nights working out how to solve this bug - it was my time - and the project team haven't eaten acknowledged the PR.3 -
There's a big emphasis in our community on long nights and working all hours. Don't feel like less of a developer; if you need sleep go to sleep.
Take a shower, eat something, take care of yourself. Your bugs will still be there.1 -
The whole class is approaching me to solve the assignment coding problems, in addition to it our professor is changing the way we code as i insisted him. I don't know if this is the result of my past sleepless nights.

I jst need AI to detect typos in my js code and it's probably going to save me hours of debugging.. 🙃
Or maybe it can help me get a well nights sleep.. so I can detect it myself.. 🤷🏽♂️8 -
Sometimes, at least once or twice during the month my body just fucking breaks. Right now for example I can't sleep and I am beyond fucking tired. This is going to hurt bad once I eventually pass out but feel the weird pain that I get from going sleepless for 2 fucking nights.
I work out like a motherfucker in order to get tired. Every fucking day I land on the gym(monday to Thursdays and Friday I take it easy with saturday and sunday rest) i run 3 to 4 miles just to get tired enough.
But not this week. Have not been able to sleep since friday for more than 4 hours.
Why am I this fucking way? I am far too young to be fucking around this way. My caffeine intake is close to null.
Fuck me I just want to sleep.4 -
This is getting bad, I’ve legit lost track of how many Friday nights in a row I’ve had to work implementations. I know it could be much, much worse. I’m overall very fortunate, but sheesh this is getting old.2

Two nights ago I was in full rant mode but when I tried posting the second rant, the app said I had to wait two hours. Now I've forgotten most of my rant topics from that night .-.7

So here I am with just 4 nights left at my disposal, in which I have to make a Major project worth 10 credits for my college degree and simultaneously prepare for my oncoming exams... You might think what was I doing all these days then!
Well did I mention I was busy contributing to Open source community (mozilla to be precise) which I enjoyed doing more than I would like to cram things up for my exams and do major project which my teachers expect to be an out of the box idea.

Back in the day when daily standups where still physical, i worked at a place you had to pay a euro if you where late. This money would then be used to buy the team dinner on pizza nights for example. Ofcourse everything changed with the daily standups being digital now.
How would you still implement somekind of correction for people being late unnecessary?3 -

An idea which was once your dream.
You worked very hard.
You exhausted all your time.
Your no.1 priority is your dream then family.
Your sleepless nights were comforted by naps.
You dropped out of school.
You stopped your lovely job.
Finally, you succeeded.
You brought the dream to life. Hurray!
You were very excited including the people around you.

The sheer amount of information to be gained in this field, and in my case specifically at my job, is mind boggling. Maybe it's just the week of fatigue talking here but I feel I'm way in over my head. Learning business, teamwork, development strategies, progress tracking, the code base itself, how different teams work together, how different sectors work together, overarching goals, individual goals, and then going home and having a social life, good nights rest, and somehow exercise in there?
It's certainly overwhelming. I know being new makes it seem worse than it likely is but I don't see how people even manage to amass so much knowledge in such a short amount of time. It's honestly so exhausting to keep track of everything and try not to make mistakes that it's nauseating. I'm still gonna try but good lord does it feel impossible. -
Been lying on the bed for 5 hours now and still can’t sleep. Popping a melatonin now... hope I don’t overdose on this stuff....RIP....11

Currently, I refactor some code in a private project at home. Yesterday I ran tests and some things didn't work I thought I already fixed. After I fixed them other things were broke and again errors felt familiar. With every fix and every new error I was more and more sure, I already did exactly the same things before. I thought, maybe it is a Déjà-vu or I dreamed about that.
After two hours, when everything was working again, I realized I did all this two nights before in a branch and totally forgot about it.
I wasn't even drunk -.-' -

I'm on a project that has been off the rails for a few weeks. We're no longer working off tickets/the scrum board. Clients are asking for production servers yesterday.
Things are behind. Some people are working nights and weekends. I'm one of the people who are vary vocal about not working over time and I haven't worked a single night or weekend yet (we're salary exempt too; no extra pay).
I even bought up in a meeting how I was not happy about people being guilt tripped for not working over (our PO messaged me out of band a few weeks back telling me my teammates would appreciate me putting in more effort).
I agreed to work this Sunday and already regret it, even though they said there'd be compensation (without mentioning what that compensation is). I was also told everyone is doing it and that's not true either.
In my 18 years in IT, I've worked at ~ 13 companies. This one is in the bottom 3 for sure.2 -
First rant in a while, been up to my eyeballs in uni work; still am.
I have a week to finish my concurrent programming assignment, and I'm stressing a little.
On one hand, I have to figure out a way to make a resizable lock-free hashmap.
On the other, essentially implement snapshot isolation for a sql database.
It's going to take a couple of long nights I suspect.3 -

The company I'm contracted to have just realised they're a tad behind with product delivery after the Development Manager and his second in command left. Leaving two contractors and one junior member of staff to deal with the backlash of "wtf is going on with x product why is it not delivered?".
Company: "Ok we're going to need to do overtime, you guys will be willing to work overtime on weekend and nights, right?"
Me: "What's the rate?"
Company: "It's day rate is that going to be an issue?"
Me: *mutes phone to pmsl*
Company: "We're all up against it so we all have to help out"
Me: "Not interested in a day rate for overtime, thanks"
Company: "Your holiday you have booked in two weeks time, can it be moved?"
Me: *laughs* "No I won't be cancelling my holiday to work"
Company: *salty as fuck now* "Well the question needed to be asked"
Me: "I'm not cancelling a holiday I have paid for to make up for a lack of planning"
I come in the office today and Mr Company has fucked off on a three week holiday!1 -
Just ordered my first ssd as a sort of self-reward for managing to get my groups project to get the 2nd highest score in class after many sleepless nights refactoring and optimizing the codebase
Honestly I’d have been happy with a C just so I passed the damn class. But my individual grade was an A and the group’s collective grade was a 86. The second highest group grade in class2 -
Literally begging my brain to relax so I can sleep.
I've gotten my drive and passion for coding back (Working on a project that'll be released for beta soon) but unfortunately, the sleepless nights came back with it.
It's currently 6am and I want to sleep but soon as I close my eyes, I see more features, optimizations and potential bug fixes. I have a slight migraine which is quite annoying.
Wish I could turn my brain off on command. Please make it stop 😔17 -

Normally when I revisit an old project feel like tearing out my awful old code and rewriting it all - not today; today I feel like I am backsliding. I sidelined my personal project months ago when my real work got busy.
I have spent the evening discovering all the cool shit the project does and wondering if I'll ever get my head around it all again.
Looking forward to many nights tinkering and getting my memory back. -
Have you ever felt like you're too committed to your job, even though you'd be doing basically anything else? Yeah, me neither. That's why I spend the last two days and nights on writing a suite of smoke tests for our system.
Here's basically all the work hours I wrote down, during which the majority of the time I was writing the test suite. If anybody's curious about Wednesday, let's just say that decisions were made, and baggies were emptied.6 -
Into a bunch of open source hogging meat heads because no one likes paying for things their own peers toil days and nights creating and creating more under documented over expensive licensed stuff (because agile) while throwing buzzwords to clients just make business while simultaneously choking the life out of underpaid overworked devs and engineers with the skill of running away from responsibility trying to save their own skin with the inept ability to look like a hero/King at the end of the day with a single mail sent with psychic communication or the lack thereof with people who are slogging their asses off to fix a problem created to the vulnerabilities and bugs introduced due to the impatience of the same moron who couldn't afford to give his employees/subordinates more time to figure out an elegant solution to a non existent problem created in the confusion of improperly documenting unnecessary requirements of an ignorant or unknowing client who is way too eager to process way too much load with way too less resources all the while whining about lack of features theyre not gonna use.3

took me 3 nights (i spent my daytime working out) to refactor our whole system cause i made a huge change to the class that we are using to all of our stuffs, no regrets.
I'm the one who made the class, and I made that when i'm not that really exposed to web development, but when I learned lots of stuffs, I saw that the class I made that we are using is not really that fast and there's a much easier way to implement such thing.
i want to punch myself every night, but then i care for our project and of course our first big project that can be seen and used by many.

A week of vacation has begun, and every time it feels like I'm joining the Nights' Watch:
"Night gathers, and now my watch begins.... the watch to see how long it is before I actually WANT to go back to work. Tuesday? Wednesday? How long IS my Netflix queue anyway? Ugh, can't go anywhere, COVID done fucked that all up, so me and the couch are on a first-name basis again. Shit, should I check email, like, just quick, so I don't have thousands to go through next Monday? Oh, maybe I should spend some time prototyping that new screen... no, gotta keep from thinking about work! Oh, there's a big list of home repairs I need to do, now I have time... no, fuck that, that shit sucks. Hmm, maybe I should start that game project I was excited about a week ago? Nah, I'm not really excited by it now, never mind. I guess I could play some Halo again... no, that's boring. I wonder if my team managed to do the deployment today, and how those tickets I Ieft them are coming... ah shit, I want to go back to work ALREADY!"
That's how George R.R. Martin wrote it, right?? -

Literally can't afford to sleep less than 6 hours two nights in a row. If I do, like I did last night, my dumb tired sleepwalking ass will just turn off my two alarms and be late for work by like an hour.
How does something like this happen? I have no recollection of waking up even briefly to turn off my alarms but I know I wouldn't sleep in consciously on a work day, so whom can I even blame?3 -

Today my old professor wrote on my school's slack channel that someone was needing some js and css work on their web page. Even though i have a good grasp of programming (I've been studying for 7 years while working as McDonald's to pay), front end web work isn't my forte, but I might be able to do it.
On the one hand it would be nice to have something to show to potential employers, but I'm a bit too nervous and I'm not interested in doing front end for future employment. What was it like when you received your first client? Nervous? Confident? I want to hear everyone's early experiences. -

I remember reading a book on HTML. I also remember reading about how to implement the towers of Hanoi, which I never attempted to this date. For a most of the time while I was learning I didn't have a computer, so I would still up in a friends room banging away at the keys. I have, however, implemented a lot of algorithms to date. I had to sit up countless nights trying to debug programs, I still do. I think programming is a life long learning situation. There are no off days. I have had situations where all I needed to do was add a missing colon or so. Greatest lesson learned know your syntax, APIs, frameworks etc. And above all follow best practices and move with the times.

!rant but it's a history
Last months I've been working on an investigation for an assignment on my uni. I required to collect specific data, so I coded an app to aid me on that. Time goes by and one day my mobile development teacher calls me (I used the app for my investigation and as final project on another subject) and tells me if I want to go into a contest with my app, "Why not?" I thought.
I asked some friends to join me because the contest required a team of 3 members minimum. In two days I had to justify the development of my app, how I would make money with it and other stuff.
I swear, this app was just a by-product, and I know you're hoping to hear a win story... We got second place, but hell it feels good to think that some sleepless nights coding along could give back so much.
Moral of the story: Never give up any chance.2 -
They should merge my pr first, so the one who will resolve the conflict is not me. I spent 3 days and nights cleaning 60 files in the projects. 60 files! Sadly, my manager merged other pr with 2 files changes from my junior first, destroying many of my changes.5

Good bye hard work
Hello sleepless nights -
I’m in a tough spot - I’m completely overloaded with sysadmin type work (server upgrades, firewall and vendor coordination, security, password maintenance) that I don’t have time to complete any programming work assigned to me. My bosses are aware and have done their best to help, but I just can’t keep up (have two young kids too and just can’t work nights anymore without trouble at home). My bosses have been great, so I feel terrible about this, but I think I’m going to have to look for another employer, I can’t do this anymore. Am I a horrible person to leave them with so much work even though they tried to help me?8

I had %1 of charge before going to sleep last night. My phone was turned off and not charging all night (~10 hours). I woke up and I turned on my phone as usual.

So I have an idea for a game. While I'm still learning the code required to make it run I'm also fleshing out ideas in my dome box. Keep in mind this is a basic rundown of said game. Not an all inclusive list of features or mechanics.
A Text RPG MUD loosely based on Stargate. Make a world creator for it and let people connect thier own worlds to the network. Original idea came from games like Neverwinter Nights where people could run thier own privately hosted modded servers.
Base game is effectively a tutorial leading up to powering on the gate.
At which point you will have one or two randomly generated worlds that can be explored by other players and role played in.
I'm a long way off of being able to make this but what do you all think?2 -
I'm developing an add-on to management a real estate and I was almost 2 months trying to solve how to reconciliate accountant accounts depending on the owner, which tax resolution could be variant, after many nights and tears today I've solved it in less than 2 hours. 😒🤯1

I try to wake up early, do some productive things, try my hands on different stuffs in life, learn a new skill, switch to a new career field, become famous and change the world... but these damned bug fixes make me stay up at nights and so goes the cycle of my life.😑

Well, it has been 4 months since I sent the mail for the stickers and the ball, and still haven't gotten them.
They probably got lost mid way 😔
And the only thing i can wonder is that there is a delivery guy somewhere, letting loose all of his anger on the ball which was meant for me... 🙈
Keeps me awake at nights😑🙊3 -
Worked on a little project which now is on tests by application team. They waited until the last day before final release to report some issues found a week ago.
I'm not working during nights, sorry. -
Popping a Klonopin after staying away from benzodiazepines for nearly 2 years. Hopefully I won’t relapse. I wish my mind had an on/off switch or something. Fuck insomnia!1

Exciting and challenging projects really helps with burnout. I didn't really believe that the solution is to work more it sounds stupid, but it reminded me why I love my craft, it was worth the sleepless nights(wouldn't do it in the long term). I hope you get the opportunity to work on something that you are passionate about and reignite that fire 🙂4

If a job (swiss knife developer) is preventing you from reaching your goal (freelancing) and take all your time so you can't learn new things, you can't go to the gym, all the projects are boring (theme forest wordpress integration, prestashop hack into cpanel ...), make you sleepless at nights, and grumpier than grumpy cat ... will you quit ?1
