Combo offer @ $60.99

This weekend I took a break from programming and online courses. 2 days of pure video gaming. Haven't done that in months.
I regret nothing.6 -
My wife. She's also my best friend.
Back then, when we were just flirting, I helped her and her friends(they were all medicine students) with their programming courses which included sql and html. I guess that help led us the way we're here now.12 -
Buying courses in Udemy (or similar), is like paying for a gym membership.
Sure there are some who actually use it. But the vast majority is like: "Now that I paid for this, I'm sure I'll get around to using it..."11 -
How did I learn to program?
It's the funniest story actually.
I studied Computer Engineering where I took programming courses.4 -
God damn it udemy, you have courses on the fundamentals of ass wiping but I can't find a good quality c++ from scratch course
༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Kill me15 -
Udemy strikes again with their amazing courses..
So many things wrong in this image that I don't even want to start..
Seriously, who teaches people to write code like that?25 -
Life of a junior self-taught dev with a sysadmin job:
1)At work, desperately try to script and automate every task, even when it isn't nessecary.
2)Learn dev skills from tutorials and web courses at every minute of your free time.
3)When returning home get self-guilt because you're procrastinating instead of doing an all-night development like your dev friends
4)The only productive thing you do is more tutorials and courses because you feel your dev skills aren't high enough for a self project
Frustrated.13 -
If you want to fly to the US, you might want to get back to your CS courses first.

Me: Alright, lets hammer out some Udemy courses...
*Opens course*
Instructer: So we are going to go ahead and download Code::Blocks
Me: *Audible sigh*10 -
When scrolling through free Udemy courses for fun, my gf says:
"Whaaaat? Data analysis with Panda and Python? Isn't that shit dangerous? Like they go in the jungle and stuff?"
Me:"oh..."
(Disclaimer: She has no background in CS)5 -
I graduated last weekend. Walked in the commencement ceremony, took pictures, posted a !rant here, the whole 9 yards. Then what happens? I get an email from the dean of the engineering college at my university stating that my degree check was done incorrectly and that I am 3 credit-hours short of graduating, it is too late to sign up for an intersession course, and there are now 3 credit-hour courses offered as 8-weel courses. So here I am, with two Job interviews coming up, without my degree, wondering why the hell I found all this out A WEEK AFTER I "Graduated"! DA FUCK!!!!!9

Universities: our courses are up-to-date so you will be learning the latest technologies
Their lecture slides in 20215 -
Most Computer Science courses at my University begin at 7:30 am. I live an hour and a half away. Having to get up around 5 am sleeping less than 4 hours a day. Help7

Be me, reading the slides of the courses I missed for my semester abroad, when I hit this slide :
"Always code as if the person maintaining your code was a serial killer who knows where you live"
I think I'm going to enjoy my semester in Mérida, México 😀2 -
Our university labs still use computers with 512mb ram, celeron processor for programming and networking courses. Even worse some of the mouse/keyboards/monitors not working and we occasionally have to do exam on those machines ...5
-
I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!4 -
rant init....
I feel like the programming courses in college don't ready you enough for the outside world 😧 - computer science student.
rant complete....15 -
My plan to become rich:
1. Create a library / framework that's really just an easy wrapper for other libraries.
2. Write a bunch of books / courses online teaching this "new" library
3. Market it to overpowered but impressionable PM's who'd fall for anything with the word "inovative" in it6 -
Why is C++ the first language taught in schools when Ruby is a much simpler and fun language?
History says because the courses didn't get updated.
Conspiracy theory says it's to keep out people who can't deal with complexity.20 -
How many of you learned your programming languages from courses/study and how many of you from just grabbing a project and bullshitting your way through until it stuck12
-
Most of our university courses are stuck in the early 2000. Feels like it's mostly due to lazy professors who just use the same material year after year.
What do you think?
It feels like I'm not learning anything useful anymore. Should get out of here ASAP.10 -
I feel like my Uni is setting me up more for failure then success.
One of my courses needed for graduation is only offered in the spring of even years. Can't wait for 2020!9 -
Guys
What would you recommend?
Shall i go to college or take courses in programming?
Is the college worth it?12 -
Sitting at Starbucks cause my train is delayed and it's the only place with freaking free wifi.
I found the stereotype hipster :D
A guy having Beats Headphones on with a MBP, iPhone X obviously next to his MBP, searching for Elon Musk Audiobooks and Courses for Smalltalk and Management on Audible 🤣6 -
Why is it that all University sites are full of broken links, despite the fact that some claim to offer the best software engineering courses out there.6
-
My company makes us take "courses" such as 'Maintaining a positive attitude towards your company' and 'the downer'(my personal super low budget skit)

I can't stop the urge to buy Udemy courses. Help!! If I don't stop, I go broke cause I'm still aiming for a job.10

My middle school teacher showed me Scratch, I really loved it, then I jumped on AppInventor and SmallBasic.
I'm really glad I attended his courses.
Now I'm in college babyyyy -
New Year resolution 2018:
Actually read / pass at least 2-3 of the 100+ books/courses on professional topics that I bought in 2017.
And stop buying stuff I don't use.3 -
why do i feel like sOfTwArE cErTifiCaTiOnS are the biggest scam in the world
literally zero prediction of the quality of work you will produce, cuz you could float through them anyway
i guess even more 🤡 is companies that request certain "certifications"
correct me if i'm wrong; are there certifications of the equivalent rigor like the fundamentals of engineering (fe) exam? in this sense, our industry is far behind... though to be fair 90% of software is non life / operational critical like building a freaking bridge is10 -
There are not enough words in the English language to describe how much I fucking hate general education courses and math.
I don't even want a CS degree anymore just to escape the hell that is called required general education courses.
Like why do I need two fucking lab based science classes? Sure, if you were doing the Computer Science with a focus in Chemistry, that makes sense. But I wasn't doing that.
Why do I even need a lab science of CS to begin with, let alone two.14 -
Now I know why our Australian trained junior "Software Engineers" are so dumb. According to academics, "...students in postgraduate IT courses were unsure how to use a computer or a USB drive."

This summer was my first internship and the developers at the company weren't using any version control.
It was literally painful to see the engineer (my mentor) make backups of each file before changing anything in it.
I really do feel, version control should be included in our courses as well.14 -
One time in college we had an android project for one of our courses. Then this one member of my team didn't want to install Android studio because he didn't want to install any unnecessary software and libraries to his machine. We wanted to do his part editing directly in github.5

hey
if my udemy course is too complicated for you
no reason to give it a shitty rating
you're just an idiot11 -
I haven't created anything.
I follow(ed) many courses about programming (CodeCademy, Khan Academy, Udacity, Coursera...), but haven't created anything really personal (excluding robotics) and I feel sad.
I have lots of ideas but many of them require me to learn something new (iOS dev, Fluttr, ElectronJS etc.), and I'm scared of falling in the loop of just following courses and then never finishing projects.5 -
So our HoD just sent us this image for doing some courses
And after seeing that superscript ++ I am not even gonna think about it1 -
Spent 2+ months this year building two new software courses. They've netted me a total of... $17.00
That's 5 cents per hour at 40/hours a week, not bad!!!!
also please fucking tell me how a $49.99 course with 92 enrollments this month earns me a grand total of $93 (even rounding up here for generosity)
creator: $93
udemy: $4506
udemy: "instructor gets 37% of comissions"
yeah okay then where is my fucking $1000+
I mean what in the literal FUCK is going on here
better put: i average a single fucking dollar for each $50 course I sell?
Please kill me and end it all in this mindless race to the bottom
taking a deep dive on this revenue share and then i'm going to fucking get the money i deserve10 -
Mom and Dad were proud, when I said I will develop Apps. They helped me to found my own company and arranged some new clients.
My brother is happy with it and is taking CS courses at school.
I've never met people who treated me as a nerd or did not accept my choice1 -
I was passing through a street where I found a sign board that said "Linux installation certified course"
What has the world come to these days? -
Was delaying learning a course for quite a long time (felt boring). The finally got the stuff by reading the documentations !
Tell me I am not the only one who thinks reading documentations is way better than taking course (in case of proper documentation ofcourse)2 -
I remember the days when you'd struggle to find a free course online. Now there are too many and you can't complete them all. Can't there be the enough amount of free courses, no more no less?
-
I'm hoarding free courses on Udemy which I probably won't even watch. I even enrolled in stuff not related to dev, things like meditation and etc...1

Bad: i got told that i need to stop playing overwatch @ work
Good: so they gave me a bunch of udemy courses1 -
After procrastinating 3 whole months of my vacations, I realise now that vacations about to end and I see that 3 online courses that I didn't even bother to start, are about to close in a week.

We'll see about that4 -
Talking about bad error messages
I missed the regular enrollment period for courses starting in 2 weeks, but I did have late enrollment days, which I remembered.
When wanting to late enroll, I was greeted with th error message in the picture. Bad news first, good news later I guess
As you can imagine, my heart skipped a beat. Nonetheless, it was all good in the end, because I was already enrolled for the compulsory courses I wanted to take4 -
Question?
Did you or anyone you know take a nano degree from Udacity? Is it worth the money ? Do companies or academic bodies recognize it?
Some of their nanodegree courses look very interesting!!17 -
I knew I had to become a dev when I started learning PHP instead of sleeping or playing while skipping my high school courses.3
-
My employer forced me to do video courses and pass quizzes/tests. Questions were vague, not directly related to the video and it took me over a week to get past them.
I think i should mention, there was a month for this, but I missed the email and learned about this courses by being warned that deadline is near.
On the second day I made a userscript that stores given answers and mark the correct ones in the next attempts, so that brute-forcing would require less copy/paste.
Topics covered by the courses are a nice subject for another rant. -
My university provides advanced education courses and you'll get certified if you pass them. I'm really interested but I don't have so much time, so which one should I pick?
List of courses I'm interested in:
SQL
IT-Security
Project Management
PHP
I'm curious about your suggestions ;)9 -

When the company my mother worked for was arranging computer courses and could not leave the computers in the borrowed classrooms.
They brought them home and I got to play with them :)
Sinclair ZX80 with 512 bytes of RAM (no hard drive, diskette or CD).

Udemy is full of crap.
I got some course that had been "discounted" from $200 (I already mentioned it is an ugly trick) and it was over in like 20 minutes. The fuck?!
All the info they gave was either common sense or something you could find on the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article on the given topic (it was a soft skills course, not a technical one).
Just junk.
Maybe there are some gems out there, but I'm not sure I would risk it again.
Udemy feels like the Booking.com of courses in terms of deceitful UX, but it's not nearly as useful.
Maybe you guys have found something good there that you could say is a bargain? If so, please let me know.10 -
Beginning of semester in courses with group projects.
It's that time of the year again where you look around in the lecture and try to find the person that least likely makes your whole semester a misery.2 -
This is going to sound stupid to some.. I recently finished sololearns JavaScript course and I loved it but I want to learn more but I have no idea where to start.. I've been browsing tutorials on YouTube but it doesn't help too much.. does anyone have any suggestions?12

My boss keeps pushing me to do „any“ courses..
I’d say I’m doing my job exceptionally well. In fact he even told me before he promoted me.
I had to tell him what I wanna learn in the next 2-3 years. I told him I wanna be decent in C++ because i love the language and in my opinion every dev can improve by learning a low level language.
Have some MITx courses and stuff I wanna do (I actually want to do them) but he keeps pushing me to send him the courses so he can push me and (I think) Monitor my progress..
C/Cpp and asm have always been my love, I wanna improve and learn. But I wanna do it for myself, not for my boss. The company doesn’t have any use for it anyway..
And those courses are 4 weeks to 12 months with scheduled assessments.
I shouldn’t have mentioned it. Now it’s an expectation they have.
Now I have to force myself into doing those courses in time.. on a schedule..?
90% of then will bore the shit out of me cause I already know it and the remaining 10% are stuff I wanna look at when I feel like it. But I don’t have a paper that says I know those 90% so yeah..
Why can’t he just be happy with the work I do during working hours and leave my free time up to me???12 -
My parents have a very good grasp of what I do.
The first computer I got to try was one of the educational computers used for courses arranged by the company my mother worked for and my father studied programming before me ;) -
The course videos were done in November 2022.
It's May 2024 and i'm still shuffling paperwork to get the damn thing published.
"Course authorship is down on our platform! Why is it taking so long for our authors to publish!? Whats going on here?!"
Maybe because nearly all of the authors you have full time jobs and a family like me and don't have time for an infinite revolving door of new tools and frameworks!!!! RAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHGHGHGHGHTHTHTHTHHHHH
Never again.1 -
Do online courses/certificates actually mean something to companies/universities?
Coursera courses? OpenClassrooms? Stuff like that.5 -
Hey folks, I just saw this list of 90 currently free Udemy video courses that normally cost up to 200€ per course.. just wanted to share them with you, as there are many developer and business courses :-)

Getting to know Vim Editor for university. Do you think switching from visual studio code to Vim is a good method for learning? Do you know any good Vim courses?12
-
Friends/Seniors : "Hey, you should take these courses. They are easy and you can get easily an A!"
Who the fuck decide what optional courses to take based on if it's easy or not?!
Students take them because :
a. They are interested in the subjects
b. Knowledge/skills after attending the courses will be beneficial for future career.
I put my money more on option b though, i.e I'd rather get C's in courses that I found it useful, than getting A's in useless courses.
(Btw, my avg grade is just a little above Cs)
If my sole purpose was just to get straight A's, I would enroll in liberal art courses instead of this stressing half-CS course we're in.
You're a joke to yourself, that's why I don't hang out with you.3 -
Hey, all you shitty devs who give my Udemy courses 1 or 2 stars with no comment or feedback
FUCK YOU!!!!12 -
I always make the mistake of choosing the wrong courses thinking that I might learn something. I learn nothing and I drop out of the course as a result.
I always forget that my university is not a place to learn anything. It's just for a fucking piece of paper no more, no less so I should take the easiest courses to just pass by.4 -
Here in Spain instead of calling it CS we use the term "Informática", which is closer to the broader IT. Which means that hyped me enrolled in all the "Informática" courses since high school, only to be shot in the face by yet another "Let's learn PowerPoint" course. I honestly hate that.
I've been giving small courses (one week long) to kids at age 12-16 about real programming, starting from scratch to real-world arduino or Java, because that is what I hoped I would have found at their age.1 -
!rant => found a free Xamarin+Azure certification course!
So typical it started on March and will end up on 30 June (something like that) and there are some cool courses for entry level and an official certification from Microsoft if at the end you show them an app you made with the given courses ! Well I liked it and wanted to share ! Check the 'content' page for the details
https://ticapacitacion.com/course/...
Enjoy -
I will major in AI. No, I will major in Big data, wait, I want to major in cloud too. I think I should first complete the courses I enrolled on cloud academy or the tens of courses in enrolled on Udemy on all the domains possible first! So many technologies, so many dreams!
-
Personally, I prefer learning from examples, trial-and-error and official user manuals over teachers or online courses.

When in the screening phone call the HR guy tells you will be using AngularJS. So, you brain like .. ok this is a good reason for you to learn it.
Now I can’t wait to do all the courses online to learn AngularJS lol8 -
I will learn java, c#, python and swift in udemy in 6months... purchase the courses, started , only did hello world for each course, never came back3

For anyone interested in startups, Ycombinator is offering a new massive online open course for people all over the world who aren't directly apart of YC. You'd actually be apart of their courses and even get to speak with industry professionals and successful founders. Just an FYI 😊

Decided to jump into the machine learning bandwagon and picked up a few books and some online courses. I already feel way out of my depth.5

Some Udemy courses are super cringe.
Can tell this guy isn't formally educated nor a professional programmer.
His code is so badly formatted and his naming conventions reeks of inexperience.
Spaghetti everywhere.4 -
Resolution for April : I should get started with the Udemy courses I have already paid for.
*** goes to Udemy site, sees new courses for $10 **
Ok, I guess I'll buy these two courses - they seem to be highly rated, i can always catch up on studies later. 🎓1 -
Sometimes just I hate school.
While my gf had to take 2 "Leistungskurse" ("advanced courses"), I have to take 3.
Also, our little-country-side school doesn't offer IT-class as a Leistungskurs. So besides Math, I need 2 extra courses I am super-not interested in. I chose English since it's okay (but I'm not really good either) and ( ._.) chemistry. I had a good teacher in 10th grade but now I have this teacher who
- uses 1980 material
- explains not/bad most times
- is childish as fuck (we are 17-18 y/o)
- expects too much (we need to learn everything by heart)
- throws ugly, unorganized prints at us w/o context & explaination
and I could name more. My A-levels are going to be so fucking bad. Tuesday is my chemistry exam. Kill me, please......4 -
With the upcoming black friday I wanted to ask: is there any actual good sites offering quality paid tutorials/courses (doesn't have to be just programming) just like for example laracasts? I have quickly scrolled through lynda and skillshare and they seem to be rather investing into quantity rather than quality? I am sure somebody here uses some site and can give either good or bad feedback.
Nice tag suggestion by the way lol3 -

STUDENTS NEED MORE HANDS ON COURSES !
I'm doing a year abroad for the fourth year of my masters. I come from a school that really pushes projects, pitches and research forward while leaving in some theory.
Now that I'm at another uni in a different country I can't help but note how UNPREPARED students are for a professional setting ! And they are one year away from finishing their masters in Software Engineering...
Students should use version control tools, they should test their software, they should apply their knowledge to a concrete project ! A 3 hour course on software testing is only as good as its practical counterpart. -
I expect you to have data before advertising data analytics courses to me Udemy ... You don't even have my %lastname% for god's sake1
-
Just realised I had been gifted a tonne of Udemy courses covering Unity 2D and 3D, Unreal Engine, android studio etc...
Well... Know what I'll be doing over a few weeks!2 -
Udemy, Skillshare, Coursera, Pluralsight, and FreeCodeCamp are all kinda garbage.
Has anyone tried Team Treehouse?
I have a strong feeling that Udacity is the best thing that I've ever discovered in my learning life.
Can you share other online courses I haven't mentioned? Thanks.11 -
First day of job. Im doing jack shit. They just make me watch udemy courses of Azure and linux shell and bash scripting all for devops purposes so they can pay a microsoft certificate for me to pass and get certified and they pay for udemy courses. Im basically getting paid to watch courses on the job10

for now i'm fueled by rage

I study both mathematics and computer science at Delft university. There's a difference between the approaches these two studies have.
Mathematics is usually about going to lectures, learning complicated stuff there and then using the obtained knowledge in a exam at the end of the course.
The CS courses are kore about engineering. They have practicals way more often than the math courses and the exams usually are of les importance.
It feels as if the "academic level" of the CS courses is lower. In math, we learn the real deep, abstract matter, while CS is more about "tinker up something nice in the practicals and you'll be fine."
I'm not sure if either approach is better, but I'm sure I like the maths version more. The CS approach is more HBO-like (HBO being the lower-level universities)
It is even that, generally speaking, the people who study maths seem more serious about studying than the cs people.
Not all of them, and no offense meant, just an observation.
Well, that was not really a rant. If you read up to here, I'm curious what you think about this.3 -

Anyone looking into how A.I. can improve language learning courses (and obviously, speech recognition) and such?
I know, A.I. buzzword, but I think it's applicable here..
Who is actually coding A.I. right now anyway? anyone?6 -
I've been wanting to get into circuit design and general electronics for a while now. PCBs seem interesting.
What can you people recommend me to start learning it? I've only found some random courses by people with thick accent I cant understand.5 -
I'm going through my Udemy courses for the hell of it and see if I might even learn some things, started a course I knew would start of way too basic but Jesus Christ, 7 lectures for doing basic player movement and animation... Strap in boys, it's going to be a long ride

Stupid useless humanities courses, because, really, who cares about humans? Besides that, silly Excel questions at work, my boss talking of his non-work projects and devrant (because it is not a #wk51 rant without saying it)

Studying multimedia developer course Class year one learning HTML.
Build this with tables and inline styles....
Assignment was clearly written and you where able to copy past most of it.
I was like fuuu. I build it in CSS and external style sheet.
Time set for assignment 4 days, time used: 3 hours.
This was in 2008......
I hope now for you students out there that it has changed and you are learning proper coding and are correctly challenged3 -

I want to be able to learn how to program as of now but there's no good courses online that I can actually interact with and my programming elective starts next semester in school. So unless one of you Devs can give a good suggestion, I'm basically sitting here playing with the commands I do know in my Linux terminal.6
-
Hey guys.
So, got tired of trying to learn on top of the knee (Portuguese expression) and decided to do some courses to get the basics.
Where do you recommend I go?
1. Course must be free
2. Not over 100 hours per course (I'll have 1 to 2 hours a day if I really focus on it)
What I need:
Language (lvl of knowledge)
- Python (know the basics) + kivy (basics)
- Html (good) + css (basics) + javascript (basics)
- node.js (0)
- Jquery ( 0 ) + Django (0)
I know there's lots of good courses out there and lots of dumb stupid ones, care to give your opinion? Thank you5 -
Anybody have any great tutorials about web scraping with python? The data science courses I took only covered maipulauting and visualizing data not getting it.4
-
Listening to Kavinsky and having the urge to do some coding in 80's atmosphere , then remembering semester starts in two days and I really gotta pass those courses. *sigh*
-
god remind me to never work with an education software company again
first, they didn't even know my course has been done for months, like, does anyone look at what your company produces?
then, they completely change the intro page and wording, have to reado that, its anyway a wall of text which they probably smugly think is good for SEO, *WRONG*, if every page is formatted nearly the same with some words swapped out you for sure are PENALIZED, not rewarded... clueless clowns
and NOW, I need exactly to-the-pixel dimensional images????? wtffffffffff
all for a course that *MIGHT* bring in something like $500... *MIGHT*
I mean for these courses it's more important about giving back and helping the community, but asking this much paper pushing busy work bullshit that you know won't even amount to an hourly wage north of something like $2... it's just not worth it anymore
never again -
Just like there are many programming courses, bootcamps etc. there should also include documentation bootcamps and courses1

Usually my home internet download speed is around 800-900 KB/s
Then I purchased Academind and codewithmosh courses then tried to download the courses but the download speed became 63-90 KB/s wow nice 👺
Maybe because of the holiday. Hopefully the download speed will be ok tonight.

I wanna start getting into the programming of android apps.
Any suggestion where to start from? Any good online courses you can recommend?6 -

Super funny front end developer which has great courses. I learned a lot from him and his humor is great and make his courses interesting and funny to watch.1 -
I get bouts of motivation and when I do I pick up 100s(clearly exaggerating) of things to learn which includes taking up new courses everywhere(literally), trying to be an open-source contributor, the most recent one is I've purchased a Ukulele (it's going good so far, well thanks for my $1 Masterclass subscription that I took last year!).
The sad part is that I have many unfinished courses everywhere. I'm learning to handle one thig at a time.2 -
Love going to out-of-state programming courses on the company dollar!! Went to Germany, Denver, and Rochester, NY for Codesys training. Hate PLC programming but it's fun traveling and learning new things.
-
Curiosity as a kid with Visual Basic. Then university courses with Java and learning C++ on the side. And started the self learning journey from there. I never touch those 3 first languages anymore.3

Free python courses/study material? (online)
Thinking of learning python bcuz of how popular it is. Any websites/apps for beginners (that also extends to advanced without IAP or other form of payments)?
Thanks in advance.19 -
I watch pirated movies but is it just me who feels really weird that people even pirate udemy courses? I'm not saying pirating movies is a good thing but pirating study materials... Man it's a weird feeling 😅12
-
I feel like I have a creativity blackout.
I want to develop a self-toy project but I have no idea what to do.
I just spend my free time on web courses. I guess that's better than nothing.3 -
So i made an account on this education videos android app for checking their ui. Used the name "Han solo" and... they contacted me for buying their courses!

Anyone know any good JS ES6 courses? Don't mind the price. It's great if it encourages practical learning :)
(Got a new developer on the team, junior AF)2 -
Anyone else take online classes in college for programming and find several of your courses not having lectures and completely relying off a book, even for assignments?
Week X:
Read chapter x
Do end chapter assignments x x, and x -
4 years in high school (turbo Pascal, Java, c++, didn't learn much more than basics), summer course with Macromedia director, a few college courses/internship with html/css/flash.
But most of all, just working and learning as I go.2 -
Since MIT is giving free access to their courses online, I shall study Computer science web programming with Python and Java
as I thought it would be so cool to have a large snake round my neck as I drink coffee.2 -
There is a deal on udemy for black Friday, all courses are 9.99€ in case anyone cares, I know it's really popular among devs.
I got one for unreal engine and one for python machine learning - they are well taught so far.5 -
Pluralsight or lynda or udemy or udacity or treehouse or tutsplus or edx or coursera or codeacademy or codeschool or video2brain
Which one is the best for JS related courses?
Currently I use pluralsight, udemy and udacity
So much to learn so little time :|5 -
The training courses I am currently writing for work. I just love learning stuff, and sharing that knowledge. It's a lot of work though.
It's actually really strange. I am a real introvert, and hate every human, but I love to stand in front of a dozen people and train them...3 -
I’m a homebody anyway and never want to leave the house. Now I have a valid excuse for not leaving the house. Feeding toxic and unhealthy behaviors? Yes. Is right now the time to care? Probably not. Queue bingeing 12 hours a day of Udemy courses.6
-
Make CS introductory courses introduce more. Last year I took one in my uni to check out how was formal education in programming. They took an entire semester to teach what I learnt in about a week (about 2 hours a day of dedicated learning). They only taught python, a language you can pick up in about 6 hours of learning. To give you a sense of how slow this course was, they took TWO weeks to teach how lists work. This are university level courses in an institution that pretends to be the best in the country. Fuck that shit, they are incompetent as fuck and treat their kids as 5yo boys.
-
As I have a break between uni courses, and I’m bored of C# I thought I’d try learning C++.
I’m working my way through Bjorne Stroustrup’s book at the moment and also have the C++ Primer in my kindle library.
Can anyone recommend any other good sources to learn the language?9 -
Many higher-level courses preach about importance of HCI, UX, etc., but not a single class in the program I went through actually touched front-end development.
-
Most of you might already know this but for those of you who don't - Pluralsight is offering all of their courses for free, for the month of April. Anyone who wants to learn anything, now's a good time to start. Besides, you can get a skill badge on your Stack Overflow profile if you manage to clear any test.
https://pluralsight.com/offer/2020/...3 -
So radio ads for federation training keep touting having available courses in IT... Check the website and IT isn't even fucking listed... Thanks guys -.-
-
I learned at IT school, because I didn't want to learn bad practices. And I don't regret that choice, teachers and courses were great !
-
So I get it is a trying time right now as most people continue to adapt to a physical distancing world. But it is so frustrating that some teachers can't figure out how to start a video meeting 😑
Makes it really hard to be tested on lectures you can't watch.
Also WebEx sucks! -

It takes a fair bit for me to enjoy an online course, let alone want to recommend it.
if anyone is looking at using their "free" time learning something new during these troubling times, i would go look at the Packt Courses.
@whocares suckered me in the other day, and i have to admit, i dont regret it.
https://devrant.com/rants/2441665/...
So with that i would actually say to anyone wanting to get into:
- Java
- Python
- Go(lang)
- Data Science
- C++
- Ruby
- Clojure
- PHP
- webDev (html, css, javascript)
then checkout these workshops.
https://courses.packtpub.com/pages/...
or
https://courses.packtpub.com/enroll...
you can actually enroll into all of them using the free coupon, so theres that ☺
one down side is the lack of dark mode, but im sure we all have browser extensions for that.random i usually hate online courses @whocares covid-19 free time learn something new free courses i dont normally do this no dark mode2 -
Be humble. Nobody knows everything.
Keep learning: read books, take Pluralsight courses, go to meetups.
Write unit tests for your code. No really! Write unit tests for your code!
Learn what the SOLID principles are.
Your job does not define who you are, you define who you are.1 -
Functional programming course starts today. I'm really looking forward to it, but it is so early compared to my other courses10

Of all the browsers required to complete mandatory classes online for the USMC you would think they would support a modern browser and no IE6 or flash heavy courses only...2

My dev goal for the new year will be teaching others, and I could use some help!
For quite some time I have been thinking about setting up some kind of community project in my area teaching people who are having a hard time finding a job in their field how to program, specifically web development, in order to advance their job prospects. There is a lot of demand here in Holland and as we all know it doesn't take much more than dedication, disambiguation skills and an almost fanatical fondness for solving puzzles to lead a very happy life as a developer. I'm hoping 2019 will be the year.
What complete courses can you recommend to teach someone how to code, that are fun/inspiring enough to keep someone motivated (and able to go to school and/or make a living in the meantime) until they can use their built up skills and portfolio to get a first job (perhaps 1-2 years)?
I plan on tutoring once or twice a week for a few hours and being available for chat the rest of the week when not working. I have enough experience (and curiosity) to help with any assignment but I do not have that much spare time, which is why I need this resource to be as good as possible, and to need as little extra explanation as possible.
My benchmark is the excellent freecodecamp, but I'm wondering if anything else is available. Bonus points for anything in Dutch, or anything that stands out by explaining things in the clearest way possible, and with great assignments of course.
Also I'd be very interested in any stories about similar (not-for-profit) initiatives, especially from a learner's point of view.
Thanks!1 -
!rant very happy to see a development at my uni towards having programming(+related courses) being more and more examined throughout the course through assignments and seminars where you have to explain what you did and why. I think this is a much more suitable solution for some courses best done with practise than having a paper based exam.3
-
! Rant
FYI for those who are interested, this course starts again today: https://coursera.org/learn/... -
unfortunately i had to learn the hard way how to pick online courses ( yes, i am not very smart), udemy has disappointed me.6

Are there any online courses / University Certifications / Books or similar things that talk about Software Architecture?
I am reading Clean Architecture from Robert C. Martin but I'd appreciate other suggestions.7 -
I wish to learn embedded systems and programming . Are there any online courses and mobile apps,? I'm a beginner.7

Anyone know any good free courses to learn programming for a total beginner?
The guy who needs it is looking to work with JavaScript and Node eventually.3 -
PHP devs and enthusiasts, any online courses that you can recommend to someone who never touched PHP7
-
All these online coding courses, and I have to wonder... Are they as good as they seem to advertise?1
-
Bossman called me up the other day, asked if I had looked at courses and told me I should think about signing up in September.
Thing is, I don't have a degree or anything beyond a high school diploma, since I'm self taught and got hired because of my ability to learn fast and my portfolio, and I told them I'd consider looking at a two year program.
But I don't want to have to be doing coursework after work, and besides, if I do a course, I want to do so because I wanted it... Sad thing is, yearly review is coming up in a month and I worry my salary is gonna stay where it started... Which is not great :S
Any thoughts?5 -
Do you ever enrolled online dev courses on udemy or platforms like that?
What's your opinion about these courses?
I want to learn Angular, I bought a course on udemy but i don't know if they're useful or not8 -
A web dev newsletter that's targeted at "advanced beginners" (people who are done with FCC/Codeacademy etc courses and have nowhere else to go). It's ready and stuff but there's just not enough motivation to keep at it consistently 😂
-
There were no tools that would of been a great help during my college courses. So I decided to make my own. After a long time of hammering Google and watching YouTube videos it clicked, I fell in love with programming and I built the tools to make my life easier.
-
When training course planned couple months ago gets canceled because you are the only One that can fix a bug before upcoming release. Sad and happy at the same time.
-
What is your opinion about courses?
I got into the world of development from the world of Sysadmining and security with 10 month long Java course and now doing web courses in my free time.
I feel this really helped me, as before I tried to learn completely by myself but failed. Now I feel much more confident learning by myself(albeit I still feel Noobish as fuck)
How did you learn? Did you take courses? Completely by yourself? Through work?4 -
Finallyyyy...
Being stuck for so long doing courses.. I now have built something.

Does wanting to leave a company simply because of legacy code with no documentation and too much work a bit reason? I guess it probably is as anywhere could have the same thing :) Maybe management would be better suited for me, time to take courses8

How do you learn new tech things---large things like framework, language, etc? Books, online courses, instructor-led course, blogs, randomly poking around?
I buy way too many tech books and spend way too many weekends reading them.6 -
Hello folks. This is not a rant but a call to comrades for suggestion and advice. Currently, Java programmer by profession. I am planning on migrating to Python and am looking to start learning. Looking around for tutorials/projects/courses to learn. Please suggest your insights. Thank you.

This summer I have a goal to master web development(nice joke, I know, but you get my point...). Html, CSS, Javacript, Python-Django etc and a website that is getting better all the time. But I have a big problem, something that really bothers me. I lack in understanding. I set up servers following tutorials and God help me if something doesn't work, I use patterns and libraries I barely know what they're made of, technologies that are totally strange to me. Right now, I'm totally confused of whether I need to have my database on a different server, or a dbaas, what the hell do I do if static files pile up etc. What can I do to get myself out of this path? Any books, courses, whatever, that teach not only the how but also the why? Thank you5
-
I'll remove some courses - make some optional and some courses mandatory.
I'll explain- I did my B.E. degree in I.T. I'll remove some courses like the ECE subjects (Digital electronics , Communication Theory) - something I'll never use. If I will - I can learn it at that time. Some mandatory courses like DBMS, OS etc. And some optional ones you can take according to your passion like - security courses or scalability courses etc. -
Looking for "real reviews" of Udemy courses.
Who here have taken a Udemy course?
Which course did you take?
What was your opinion of it, in terms of overall quality, material coverage, interactivity (the coursework), and so forth?
Did you feel you actually learned useful things at the conclusion of it?
Had you taken a similar course through a different service? Which service and how did it compare?
There are some $10 courses at Udemy I'm considering purchasing. But there are two $100/each courses I'm highly interested in. TMI: We are a single income, single parent household of 3 with Christmas nearing and all the childrens have birthdays this month. Spring Break was apparently a very busy time for the adults of our extended family. Hence, even the $10 is hard to part with.4 -
2017: This year I am going to learn a lot of stuff. *Buys 10 courses*
2018: I am going to finish all the courses I bought, *Buys like 10 other course*
2019: This is the year I am going to do it. *Ignore courses goes to Youtube*
2020: This year is the charm. Hopefully. 😬🙃4 -
So I just failed my maths exam.
Nothing more to say except all other courses have way way better grades than my course.
So my teach's got two courses and both of them massively fucked up, course average (both) 4.5-5.6 (d- - f).
All other courses are just Soo way better that I just can't believe that fault is only on the student side here.
And to top it off, this scenario is not new at all.
Had the same shit with our courses failing unlike the others anothet time too.
FUCK YOU FR. NIELEN4 -
How has your experience been with Udemy courses?
I've taken three courses among which a low quality one and I'm not impressed at all:
- not in-depth enough
- no quality control on courses
I think that I learn much more from official documentation (MDN, books,..) than from such courses in general.
I've taken Lynda.com courses and they are of the highest quality and learning value. Lynda.com was amazing and professional. Pluralsight, same thing.
I have to learn how to filter courses better.
Onwards to more learning..4 -
Hi
I am a php dev, i want to go up in position/salary increase,

Programmers in python are few in my opinion I wonder this because of the lack of courses in French or the complexity of the language ? 🤔6

What's the general consensus on the forced training courses? We now have a 3rd party arranging a course about FooBar and our managers though it was a great idea for everyone in my team to participate. Since...well you don't know when you need FooBar, so it's good to learn it now! And any education is only good. Makes employees smarter.
Except that I am not interested on FooBar. I don't use it. I can google it when I need it. I can read a book. I could travel to a 3-day course with 9 hours of straight lecturing per day and 200 slides with 10 second pause between them. But I am dead shit sure that after 30mins you lose the focus and after 1 week you remember nothing.
And everyone who's ever been on any company arranged courses, you know that there's always some guy who already knows everything. So starting from the first second he wants to challenge the trainer. Have a dialogue. Discuss about the problems that he has seen. Noone else cares. So you have 30 people listening to 2 guys debating.
But hey, maybe after 6-12months our company starts using FooBar and then we have a couple of dozen geniuses who have taken that multi-thousand-euro class. Or not.
At least you get a cup of coffee and a sandwich on mornings and afternoons.2 -
I can't be the only person who feel that public/online education courses for programming is terrible. As far as I've seen it just teaches people bad practices. You're better off reading on your own.7

2019 Recap: Quit studentjob. Got engineering degree, worked as a devops consultant, got a child, bought a house, started at new company as mainframe developer.

Don't laugh but can anyone recommend any free Javascript tutorial/training courses?
It's for a friend... No really13 -
I found every book of Arduino a total waste of money. There are lots of courses free and a lot of documents, projects in Instructables or Hackaday to start to learn. I say it as a teacher and course/document writer.

Just wondering weather i should be preparing for a college supplementary exam that is to happen in may/june (that i have already failed twice and i hate that subject ) or should use this free time to learn new courses/tech that I always wanted to learn3

Courses and modules for languages don't focus enough on the "Dark Side". How TF am I supposed to help prevent XSS when it's not explained to me beyond using a sanitizer. Sigh!1

Does master degree really matter or if I take some courses will be better if I'll not go through academic life10

can you share some interesting and useful topics for a web developer(PHP), who want to become nodejs based full stack developer?
udemy courses link will be useful.2 -
Why do I feel like development market is being flooded right now?
Indiehackers is full of posts about “businesses” that are selling courses.
More like selling shovels during a gold rush, amirite? -
Don't ya think Sololearn should come up with more courses on Python modules like PyQT, Django, Flask, Bottle, Robot and so on.2

Are there any good courses for practical machine learning (that uses an actual language)? I tried out Andrew Ng's course and it seems more theoretical than practical.2

What's better for improving knowledge of programming?

I'd like to learn about functional programming. What books, courses, tutorials or articles would you suggest? I have a good understanding of abstract algebra and I felt the need to learn it because my Typescript is a mess and I visibly don't know what I'm doing.1

Just started my first job out of college. Didn’t really get a good idea of what the responsibilities were when I was interviewing. Turned out that it’s like an advanced help desk role, no coding. No coding sucks but atleast I can use some cool software right?
The entire first month is only fucking online courses on soft skills. Can’t use the cool software until after I finish the courses. AND, I couldn’t even get confirmation that I will be using cool software. I might just be talking to customers. Fucking kill me
All I want to do is code and now I’m stuck in this shit job with no coding2 -
I like egghead.io cause they're quick and straight to the point compared to frontendmasters.
Are there other online courses you can recommend to learn the JS ecosystem?
These two are a little pricey for me (outside US).2 -
Question.
TL;DR: Best C# and .NET accreditation courses (UK)?
I've started a new job as a .NET Software Developer. Now I have never done C# before but they want to send me on some courses to learn.
First I have to recommend what courses though. Price isn't an issue but they want me to give them a variety of courses available. Ones that are crash courses and online learning courses. I want it to be accredited so I can come away with something to show on my CV/LinkedIn.
What C# and .NET courses would you guys recommend or what course providers would you recommend (in the UK).
Thank you in advance!3 -
