This weekend I took a break from programming and online courses. 2 days of pure video gaming. Haven't done that in months.

I regret nothing.

My wife. She's also my best friend.

Back then, when we were just flirting, I helped her and her friends(they were all medicine students) with their programming courses which included sql and html. I guess that help led us the way we're here now.

I get an email from the dean of the engineering college at my university stating that my degree check was done incorrectly and that I am 3 credit-hours short of graduating, it is too late to sign up for an intersession course, and there are now 3 credit-hour courses offered as 8-weel courses. So here I am, with two Job interviews coming up, without my degree, wondering why the hell I found all this out A WEEK AFTER I "Graduated"! DA FUCK!!!!!

Our university labs still use computers with 512mb ram, celeron processor for programming and networking courses. Even worse some of the mouse/keyboards/monitors not working and we occasionally have to do exam on those machines ...

I feel like there are more and more people who only THINK they can program, but in reality they barely can make the “Hello, world” program. Many of them come from all of these “online courses”, I’m not saying that from there come only the bad ones, but many of them are bad programmers, who just think that one or two courses is good enough.
You have to gain experience by doing actual work, not by doing pre-baked exercises. In real life most of things you have to solve with your imagination - Stackoverflow will only provide you some raw draw!

This summer was my first internship and the developers at the company weren't using any version control.

It was literally painful to see the engineer (my mentor) make backups of each file before changing anything in it.

I really do feel, version control should be included in our courses as well.

One time in college we had an android project for one of our courses. Then this one member of my team didn't want to install Android studio because he didn't want to install any unnecessary software and libraries to his machine. We wanted to do his part editing directly in github.

I missed the regular enrollment period for courses starting in 2 weeks, but I did have late enrollment days, which I remembered.
When wanting to late enroll, I was greeted with th error message in the picture. Bad news first, good news later I guess

I knew I had to become a dev when I started learning PHP instead of sleeping or playing while skipping my high school courses.

My employer forced me to do video courses and pass quizzes/tests. Questions were vague, not directly related to the video and it took me over a week to get past them.

I think i should mention, there was a month for this, but I missed the email and learned about this courses by being warned that deadline is near.

On the second day I made a userscript that stores given answers and mark the correct ones in the next attempts, so that brute-forcing would require less copy/paste.

Topics covered by the courses are a nice subject for another rant.

I got some course that had been "discounted" from $200 (I already mentioned it is an ugly trick) and it was over in like 20 minutes. The fuck?!

All the info they gave was either common sense or something you could find on the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article on the given topic (it was a soft skills course, not a technical one).

Just junk.

Maybe there are some gems out there, but I'm not sure I would risk it again.

I’d say I’m doing my job exceptionally well. In fact he even told me before he promoted me.

I had to tell him what I wanna learn in the next 2-3 years. I told him I wanna be decent in C++ because i love the language and in my opinion every dev can improve by learning a low level language.

Have some MITx courses and stuff I wanna do (I actually want to do them) but he keeps pushing me to send him the courses so he can push me and (I think) Monitor my progress..

a. They are interested in the subjects
b. Knowledge/skills after attending the courses will be beneficial for future career.

I always make the mistake of choosing the wrong courses thinking that I might learn something. I learn nothing and I drop out of the course as a result.

I always forget that my university is not a place to learn anything. It's just for a fucking piece of paper no more, no less so I should take the easiest courses to just pass by.

Here in Spain instead of calling it CS we use the term "Informática", which is closer to the broader IT. Which means that hyped me enrolled in all the "Informática" courses since high school, only to be shot in the face by yet another "Let's learn PowerPoint" course. I honestly hate that.

I've been giving small courses (one week long) to kids at age 12-16 about real programming, starting from scratch to real-world arduino or Java, because that is what I hoped I would have found at their age.

I will major in AI. No, I will major in Big data, wait, I want to major in cloud too. I think I should first complete the courses I enrolled on cloud academy or the tens of courses in enrolled on Udemy on all the domains possible first! So many technologies, so many dreams!

Personally, I prefer learning from examples, trial-and-error and official user manuals over teachers or online courses.

While my gf had to take 2 "Leistungskurse" ("advanced courses"), I have to take 3.
Also, our little-country-side school doesn't offer IT-class as a Leistungskurs. So besides Math, I need 2 extra courses I am super-not interested in. I chose English since it's okay (but I'm not really good either) and ( ._.) chemistry. I had a good teacher in 10th grade but now I have this teacher who

I'm doing a year abroad for the fourth year of my masters. I come from a school that really pushes projects, pitches and research forward while leaving in some theory.

Now that I'm at another uni in a different country I can't help but note how UNPREPARED students are for a professional setting ! And they are one year away from finishing their masters in Software Engineering...

Students should use version control tools, they should test their software, they should apply their knowledge to a concrete project ! A 3 hour course on software testing is only as good as its practical counterpart.

I expect you to have data before advertising data analytics courses to me Udemy ... You don't even have my %lastname% for god's sake

I study both mathematics and computer science at Delft university. There's a difference between the approaches these two studies have.
Mathematics is usually about going to lectures, learning complicated stuff there and then using the obtained knowledge in a exam at the end of the course.
The CS courses are kore about engineering. They have practicals way more often than the math courses and the exams usually are of les importance.

It feels as if the "academic level" of the CS courses is lower. In math, we learn the real deep, abstract matter, while CS is more about "tinker up something nice in the practicals and you'll be fine."

I'm not sure if either approach is better, but I'm sure I like the maths version more. The CS approach is more HBO-like (HBO being the lower-level universities)
It is even that, generally speaking, the people who study maths seem more serious about studying than the cs people.
Not all of them, and no offense meant, just an observation.

Super funny front end developer which has great courses. I learned a lot from him and his humor is great and make his courses interesting and funny to watch.

I get bouts of motivation and when I do I pick up 100s(clearly exaggerating) of things to learn which includes taking up new courses everywhere(literally), trying to be an open-source contributor, the most recent one is I've purchased a Ukulele (it's going good so far, well thanks for my $1 Masterclass subscription that I took last year!).
The sad part is that I have many unfinished courses everywhere. I'm learning to handle one thig at a time.

Love going to out-of-state programming courses on the company dollar!! Went to Germany, Denver, and Rochester, NY for Codesys training. Hate PLC programming but it's fun traveling and learning new things.

4 years in high school (turbo Pascal, Java, c++, didn't learn much more than basics), summer course with Macromedia director, a few college courses/internship with html/css/flash.

But most of all, just working and learning as I go.

Since MIT is giving free access to their courses online, I shall study Computer science web programming with Python and Java

What books or courses would you recommend to further my knowledge in C/C++?

I’m a homebody anyway and never want to leave the house. Now I have a valid excuse for not leaving the house. Feeding toxic and unhealthy behaviors? Yes. Is right now the time to care? Probably not. Queue bingeing 12 hours a day of Udemy courses.

Make CS introductory courses introduce more. Last year I took one in my uni to check out how was formal education in programming. They took an entire semester to teach what I learnt in about a week (about 2 hours a day of dedicated learning). They only taught python, a language you can pick up in about 6 hours of learning. To give you a sense of how slow this course was, they took TWO weeks to teach how lists work. This are university level courses in an institution that pretends to be the best in the country. Fuck that shit, they are incompetent as fuck and treat their kids as 5yo boys.

As I have a break between uni courses, and I’m bored of C# I thought I’d try learning C++.
I’m working my way through Bjorne Stroustrup’s book at the moment and also have the C++ Primer in my kindle library.

Many higher-level courses preach about importance of HCI, UX, etc., but not a single class in the program I went through actually touched front-end development.

For quite some time I have been thinking about setting up some kind of community project in my area teaching people who are having a hard time finding a job in their field how to program, specifically web development, in order to advance their job prospects. There is a lot of demand here in Holland and as we all know it doesn't take much more than dedication, disambiguation skills and an almost fanatical fondness for solving puzzles to lead a very happy life as a developer. I'm hoping 2019 will be the year.

What complete courses can you recommend to teach someone how to code, that are fun/inspiring enough to keep someone motivated (and able to go to school and/or make a living in the meantime) until they can use their built up skills and portfolio to get a first job (perhaps 1-2 years)?

I plan on tutoring once or twice a week for a few hours and being available for chat the rest of the week when not working. I have enough experience (and curiosity) to help with any assignment but I do not have that much spare time, which is why I need this resource to be as good as possible, and to need as little extra explanation as possible.

My benchmark is the excellent freecodecamp, but I'm wondering if anything else is available. Bonus points for anything in Dutch, or anything that stands out by explaining things in the clearest way possible, and with great assignments of course.

Also I'd be very interested in any stories about similar (not-for-profit) initiatives, especially from a learner's point of view.

Are there any good course providers with completion certificates?

!rant very happy to see a development at my uni towards having programming(+related courses) being more and more examined throughout the course through assignments and seminars where you have to explain what you did and why. I think this is a much more suitable solution for some courses best done with practise than having a paper based exam.

Bossman called me up the other day, asked if I had looked at courses and told me I should think about signing up in September.

Thing is, I don't have a degree or anything beyond a high school diploma, since I'm self taught and got hired because of my ability to learn fast and my portfolio, and I told them I'd consider looking at a two year program.

But I don't want to have to be doing coursework after work, and besides, if I do a course, I want to do so because I wanted it... Sad thing is, yearly review is coming up in a month and I worry my salary is gonna stay where it started... Which is not great :S

A web dev newsletter that's targeted at "advanced beginners" (people who are done with FCC/Codeacademy etc courses and have nowhere else to go). It's ready and stuff but there's just not enough motivation to keep at it consistently 😂

There were no tools that would of been a great help during my college courses. So I decided to make my own. After a long time of hammering Google and watching YouTube videos it clicked, I fell in love with programming and I built the tools to make my life easier.

When training course planned couple months ago gets canceled because you are the only One that can fix a bug before upcoming release. Sad and happy at the same time.

I got into the world of development from the world of Sysadmining and security with 10 month long Java course and now doing web courses in my free time.
I feel this really helped me, as before I tried to learn completely by myself but failed. Now I feel much more confident learning by myself(albeit I still feel Noobish as fuck)

This summer I have a goal to master web development(nice joke, I know, but you get my point...). Html, CSS, Javacript, Python-Django etc and a website that is getting better all the time. But I have a big problem, something that really bothers me. I lack in understanding. I set up servers following tutorials and God help me if something doesn't work, I use patterns and libraries I barely know what they're made of, technologies that are totally strange to me. Right now, I'm totally confused of whether I need to have my database on a different server, or a dbaas, what the hell do I do if static files pile up etc. What can I do to get myself out of this path? Any books, courses, whatever, that teach not only the how but also the why? Thank you
