I am Computer Science Student
Yesterday I asked question to my classmates, what is Linux,
here's some(non-forgettable) replays:
3- An App
2- A Soap
1- Game character
and most (suggest me..a word) :
0- Linux Crackers(Food)
and that guy sent me this..17 -

How everyone uses stackoverflow:
1. Work on some project
2. Spot a bug
3. Try to solve the bug and fail.
4. Write a question for SO.
5. Post question on SO.
6. Get the answer and some points.
How I use stackoverflow:
1. Work on some project
2. Find a bug
3. Try to fix the bug and fail
4. Write a question on SO
5. Get scared that I might be downvoted.
6. Spend 45 minutes optimizing the structure of the question.
7. Try additional tests to cover all possible scenarios.
8. Still scared to click post.
9. Scrap everything and restart line by line writing further details of each step in your question.
10. Find the bug myself.
11. Click cancel on the question that took me 3+ hours to write.
12. Cry.20 -
1. Go to office!
2. Make coffee!!
3. Start computer.
4. Get to wo.."Windows must restart in order to install some updates".
4. 3 hours later => "Working on updates 68% n/ Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while."
4. Fuck this, I'm going home.
I miss Linux...14 -

I've seen some people on here mention a show called silicon valley, so I thought I would check it out. I started yesterday... I'm already in the middle of season 3, I didn't sleep much last night...5

1. Search on google for an answer
2. Find someone asking the same question on some forum
3. See the question has an answer
4. The answer is "Please search yourself before asking. Thread locked."
This happens too often..4 -
"Today I won't code, I'll just play some games or watch TV and relax!"
"Hmmm... I'll just fix this one small thing here... shouldn't take long. And then its time for some gaming!"

The Dutch referendum about the new mass surveillance law is a go, fuck yeah!
Also, due to a some stuff, a delay is postponing the start of the mass surveillance to May next year.

A story about the shittiest boss I ever had.
We were a consulting company, I was leading the dev team. We're on the phone with a client who needs a change to the software we're maintaining for them.
Boss (mouthes at me): How long?
I (hold up 3 fingers, mouth back): 3 days
Boss (to client): You have it by tomorrow. *hangs up*
I: What the actual fuck?
Boss: You said 3 days, 3 times 8h is 24h, better order some pizza and Red Bulls for your guys.
He pulled stunts like this all the time and yet genuinely seemed surprised when I quit.7 -
Best computer/hacking/tech TV and movies?

"I am a software engineer"
3 most frequent conversation routes
1. "I have some great app ideas maybe you could help me..."
2. "My computer/phone crashes frequently, what is wrong with it?..."
3. "so how many software/games/mobile apps have you developed?..."5 -
After 3 hours of trying to implement a feature, I’ve moved from 10 errors to 7 errors!

I contantly keep forgetting to turn on my music. It's like:
*open youtube*

*alt-tab to ide, start coding*

3 hours later...
"Oh yeah let's turn on some music"

Some people assume that since I am techy that I have a really good laptop or setup.
Nope.
Just have my raspberry pi 3 as my main computer. Go Linux🔥🔥12 -
Well. Here is the story.

Give some personality to your CMD!
1. Make a file called i.cmd and add the following text to it:
@echo off
echo me too
2. Move the file to somewhere in the system path (e.g. C:\Windows)
3. Enjoy!1 -
why i like c#?
1- easiest way to build a program with good GUI. just put some XAML code and it's done.
2- I love syntax of c#. it has types. god I hate php XD
3- C# is also fast and strong.
4- don't forget the .net framework that has almost every thing I need.
3- A god like IDE, the Visual Studio.32 -
You can kill me for this...
I've one old printer and and I wanted to print some pages. So I did following steps
1. Plugged printers power cable and turned it on.

1. Finally publish some of my open source projects.
2. Career progression (move to more of a tech leadership role).
3. Stop taking shit from managers who know nothing about code. -

My plan:
1. Draw the logo in paper with black marker
2. Scan with the infamous printer
3. Load in GIMP
4. Edit some parts
5. Put some colors
6. Print or save as image file
7. Use everywhere
As I start to do step 2, I noticed something VERY wrong.

Our team changed to Linux about 3 years ago already and I can see some of them struggling to insert some commands when I'm talking to them.
How the fuck do you struggle to `cd` into a fucking directory?
Ok,ok... I've linuxing full time for 8 years already, I understand I've been through this... But come on! If some one said to me on day ONE "dude, you can cd /full/path/of/fucking/whatever" or " ~/ means home" I would be doing it from day one.
Probably I'm overreacting but wtf dudes? 3 years... Step up your game.18 -
Who also has some Raspberry Pi's?
& for what are you using yours? 🙂
I use my Raspberry Pi 3 for ownCloud & my Raspberry Pi 2 for PiHole.32 -
How many guys have experienced this?
Heard this from a supposed Linux user

What I want: powerful enough computer for some general gaming + IDE + shitloads of terminals with 6 screens running a Linux distro.
What I have: powerful enough computer which can run quite some games and handle my IDE + shitloads of terminals. Runs Linux already but still have to order 3 screens.

Ruby’s fanciness bit me in the butt today. It’s pretty rare, but often confusing AF when it happens.
array = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
array.count +1 +2
# => 1
What the fuck?
array.count +1 +2 +3
# => 1
What the fuck?
+1 +2 +3
# => 6
Okay.
(array.count +1 +2 +3)
# => 1
What the fuck?
(7 +1 +2 +3)
# => 13
Okay...
array.count + 1 + 2 + 3
# => 13
Alright, so spaces matter here...?
((array.count) +1 +2 +3)
# => 13
But not here!? ... Oh. I think I know what’s going on.
Array#count
Returns the number of elements. If an argument is given, counts the number of elements which equal it using ==
Well fuck me.
Ruby is seeing `array.count(+1+2+3)` instead of `array.count()+1+2+3` since `+1` is a value, not an operator followed by a value as is the case with `+ 1`.
Now, why was I using +1 +2 instead of adding some spaces like I normally would? So they would match what was in the comment next to them for easier reference. Heh.
Future dev, I did this for you! So this is all your fault. :|36 -
Yes - I fucking hate xcode too.
These are the main reasons:-
(1) Why the fuck make people go into Terminal to run pod install to build something? this is absurd.
(2) There are always fucking problems with the provisioining profile - like wrong fucking profile, or expired profile - which fuck wit came up with such a convoluted way of deploying? and then you to have to login to the apple develope and agree to some new fucking terms with some other bull shit crap.
(3) Swift 4 is out when nobody has been learnt swift 3.... What the fuck??
Fuck Apple!9 -
I started color-coding my bash scripts to more easily see when things start and end.
At first it was just some headers here and there, but now my terminal looks like it's shitting rainbows all over the place.
It's so pretty :36 -

Me: "hey CEO, that product that's only had 3 devs on for a couple of years has grossed a million brit bucks 2 years running. Any chance we could get some laptops for the team that aren't heavy as fuck and 4-5 years old. Maybe some monitors that aren't tiny and dull as fuck?"

So apparently iOS 11 doesn't allow you to add up 1+2+3 as it tells you it's 24 and you can't type the letter "i" as it will be converted to some non recognizable character, so my question now is, who tested this and who got brutally murdered?4

There are a few ways to get unstuck:
1) On Windows delete C:\Windows\System32
2) On linux-based OS type in a terminal: sudo rm -rf /

For fuck's sake man! I know you are an inexperienced junior dev/student but estimating 3 months at 6 hours /day for slightly modifying some C# code is just ridiculous.
I may have never touched anything .NET before but the modification required just 3 fucking lines and I did it in a day. In three months I would have finished the whole fucking project.
PS: VS2017 (RC) was quite lovely.8 -

Could do with some dev input here.
Going to rename most of my projects before I start them up again just for some consistency amongst everything so...
Because I name my projects internally as a different tree for each milestone (1.0 is maple, 2.,0 is pine etc) I'm going to have my other stuff follow a tree related naming scheme, first up is my game engine/framework...
It's currently called the 'Mod Engine' but I have 3 idea's and want to know people opinions
- Woodsman Engine
- Lumberjack Engine

Which is best do you think or can anyone think of any better ideas? :-320 -

Some have good teachers and do some good work.
The main problem for me is their false promises. There is no scarcity of junior developers. None.
Anyone can be a programmer doesn't mean that everyone can be a good one.

Anybody loves python? I don't know why, but the more I use python, the more I seem to hate it. Specially the poor naming of the functions are just horrible! specially when you've been following the #CleanCodePrinciple strictly.
Let me give some example:
What does even "len" or "str" mean normally? is it a variable or a function? can anybody imagine?
where as in Java or JavaScript it is array.length and anyValue.toString()
anybody can understand what these things are, whether a variable or a function.
in python some functions are like "dothisorthat" and some are "do_this_or_that" some are "doThisOrThat". I mean, why can't you just follow an unified rule?
and there's this fragmentation between python 2 and 3! whether in stackoverflow or in youtube/udemy, a lot of them used python 2 and some uses python 3. I mean, can't they have some BackworkSupports?18 -

TI made some retarded ASM routines (as usual) for drawing various things to the screen, most of the time whatever you try to draw takes upwards of 3 frames at 15MHz to draw. A LINE KNOWN TO BE 100% STRAIGHT SHOULD NOT TAKE 1/3 OF A FRAME TO PLOT EACH PIXEL OF. I managed to get it down to 300-some cycles per pixel on the 2 i've messed with, which still isn't great, but it's a massive increase in efficiency, so fuck it, i'm happy. The "click" was when I managed to get a serious optimization working that took over 3 hours to debug.2

Opening my IDE 3 (!) hours after getting to the office.
Then instead of writing some code I go to devRant to rant about it ;)1 -
What I learnt after 3 hrs of debugging for a stupid issue today ?
Lesson 1 - Getting some unknown error even though your code ks right and no error in logs ? Check you SQL version and its rules.
Lesson 2 - phpmyadmin is fuckin shit ass software
Lesson 3- I need to learn JavaScript for backend ASAP3 -
Life goals:
1. Port Linux to Brainfuck.
2. Make a some how object oriented Brainfuck fork.
3. Make IDE for #2, with completely random auto completion.1 -
1. Finish what is left over from 2017
2. Get some experience with machine learning
3. Finish internship and work as a normal full-time dev -

Anyone else here with a Github filled with half-finished, mostly abandoned projects? Mine is basically made up of cool ideas i had at some point and promptly abandoned 3 weeks later at most :D Should i feel bad?7

[CMS of Doom™]
Imagine creating a CMS so bad that you let the owner (who I work for) define in a simple input field what email address is used as the sender address for the welcome email of newly registered users.
Basically they filled in a personal email of the company some 3 years ago AND of course the person with said email address left the company a few months later thus for some 2-3 years newly registered users received a welcome email with a sender address of an unavailable user.
And I thought I've seen it all in this CMS...3 -
1. God Complex
2. You can get things done with little effort. ( script or program that does personal computer chores for me, etc..)
3. Lots of $$$ opportunities if you are able to get some clients. -

Today i had to revisit my code to change some functionality for an application i made 3 years back.
I wish i could go back in time, refactor the code and write Unit tests.1 -

Had a feedback meeting with one of my senior devs today, it went really well and allowed me to get a new view on some things, like some common behavior patterns I do. Really happy about it :3 If you didn't have something like this yet, go for it, it's definitely worth the time ^^

A day in the life of a paypal dev.
1. Slurp some starbucks
2. Do a lil' Meeting
3. Eat lunch
4. 1on1 Meeting with manager for one hour
5. Scroll over some code and look at the beautiful Momentum ToDo app
6. Bid some employee farewell (seems to happen every day there apparently)
Sounds pretty efficient. When you write no code you cannot create any bugs...3 -
Me compiling c++ code at 3 am be like:

After writing the whole code again notices was using gcc instead of g++... -

Sometimes you do 1 hour of work everyday for 2 months and spend the rest of the days memeing away. Some other times you gotta turn off all the chat apps, put on the headphone, and code for 3 days straight, only stop for some food, sleep, and coffee.1

Coding distraction
To be honest - task distraction
1. Starting a task, you need to do
2. finding old code you want to refactor
2. Doing some improvements
3.Fixing the bugs created by prev actions

Task not finished
But that's kind of fun. Livin' on the edge2 -

I feel I need to write some side project summary somewhere.
So here it is about 3 months later:
- deleted 90% of code I created during last 3 months
- rewrote backed 5 times
- 200 lines POC still waiting to put in any meaningful architecture on frontend
- frontend part after aurelia, next, gatsby, react I think it would be vue powered by nuxtjs
- forced myself to buy food for whole week and don’t go out (except go running ) before I finish at least what I wrote on whiteboard
Now some positive news:
- there is not much left to be fucked up, removed or unnecessary added
- I think I got a plan
- this is probably first side project that makes me happy for such long time
- there is some probability it would help people and this is what I want to do in my life
Most important is that I know it would take at least half a year to do basic version of it and I don’t care.
Wish me luck so I can put some sneak peak after next 3 months. -

For some weeks now I've been having strange compilation issues with Android Studio on Windows 10. Some of my builds fail with funny errors that have only 1-3 StackOverflow entries. I let my monkey brain come up with a reasonable estimate after evaluating what is required. Then i just add in some random amount of time (If my estimate is around 3 days i just randomly say it'll take me 3 days, 3 hours, 21 minutes and 50 seconds). It usually cracks up people during meetings and ends up getting me more time because they like to round it up xD3

Today I created some reusable clean decent code to replace the random chaos in a huge project and then realised I had 3 options:
1. Sort out every instance to use the new code. This is very high risk because the project is both a shit show and has no tests. I don't have time to manual test or write unit tests on so much stuff.
2. Move over only some so that I can manually test. Still no time to unit test (management is fucked on their priorities). This will fuck the project even more since i will never get time to revisit this and adds yet more inconsistency and chaos to a project on its last legs and has this problem in droves.
3. Leave the project fucked
\_(^^)_/
I'm veering towards option 3 these days.1 -

Hy to all,
I managed to install Archlinux after 3 days of continues documentation but I still have some problems that I need to solve.
1. Any idea how to run gnome-terminal?
I've set the locale if you guys are wondering and installed vt3.
2. Couldn't install visual studio code.
3. How do I install themes. I have gnome gui.
I've read the arch documentation but still can't figure out how to solve some of the problems. If you guys have a website with a good guide or any tips that would be great.
Thx in advance.1 -
I'm gonna soon start on a gaming project with my team, it's not gonna be something we want to push but it's gonna be an on going project to slowly grow some skills within the whole learning and understanding game machenics. Any advice from any fellow veterans :3 ?2

Is there anybody else who also happens to think that Quake 3 Arena and Blood Omen 2 are some of the best games to have ever come out?13 -
I really dont think the project manager who passed out from IIM recently deserves to be paid so much than us devs. I don't know why but I feel it's not fair to pay someone 3 times that of my salary for just sending emails and having some meetings..2

asked a developer to give me a software for free. he showed attitude, so after 3 month i created a better version of that software.
my only companion was a vb6 book, some source code to read and test and a slow internet connection.2 -

Some cost conscious companies be like: I pay you for the these 3 tasks, and after few months start giving 5 more tasks which you will do properly, then judge you for not performing well on the 3 basic tasks.2

I've been doing web dev for 3 years. Now, I want to do some mobile stuff. After I went through some internet resources, I decided to give Phonegap a chance.
Is it worthy my time?!7 -
What should you do if the project manager is not assigning you any new work after the backlog already has been cleaned up?
I currently work as a junior front-end dev. For the past few weeks, the 2 juniors (incl. me) are lacking tickets. For example, I got 2.5 days of work assigned during our 3-week sprint. We already followed some courses, read some books & created some designs for upcoming features (that have no "functional specifications" written down).3 -
My goals this year:
1. Getting certified for Spring core
2. Getting certified for Java OCP 8
3. Write my first blog about “something interesting”
4. Update my personal website
5. Getting a drivers license
So if someone has some ideas/tips that would be great.1 -
I would like to hire some 3 week Treehouse programmer just to fire them after 3 days. Damn good we have better standards. Treehouse, your video commercial sucks.

Any good free HTML5-CSS3 visualization tool for Java Swing?

My new year resolution as a dev:

4. Waiting for devRant stickers.. -
Literally the best feeling in the world followed by 3 fist pumps.
The feeling I am describing is that sense of accomplishment and god-mode when your working on a feature/bug and you write some code to implement it, run it, and it works flawlessly. Ahhh. -
Is there a reason my team is using deprecated AngularJS? Surely there must be some >3 year old AngularJS code somewhere, but no. Git history says AngularJS usage started 1 year ago.
No worries though we’re “agile”, we should expect to be rewriting code1 -
Thinking about getting a 3D printer like the Creality Ender 3. Any of you guys print and what are some of the fun hobbies or tinkerings you've don't with it?

Big thanks in advance. <34 -
Any one got a good experience of mobbing ?
Seems like it’s one person driving and the 2-3 telling them what to type.
Couldn’t we just use some voice input software to do that?
I must be missing something4 -
Have a hackathon starting in 12 hours and have no ideas rn. Kinda freaking out, so would love it if you guys could help me out with some ideas! My team includes 3 computer science juniors, and we've worked with Java, Python and frontend and backend web dev frameworks.
