I used to get annoyed when my dad(65+ years old) had a simple computer "problem" like copy and paste that I needed to help with.
But then I remembered he showed me how to use a spoon and not shit myself so I guess it all evens out13 -
A: So are you the programmers of this software?
B: Yeah, I did the front end
A: Oh it looks so fantastic! It is simple, yet beautiful and responsive. Truly great design, you are so talented!
C: I did the back end...
A: Oh, you mean the server stuff?
C: Yeah
A: Niceeee11 -
Me: intern in XYZ company
Boss: boss of XYZ
Boss: Why are you taking so much time in developing a simple webpage.
Me: *explains because you asked for so much bullshit to include**
Boss: I can develop it in half an hour.
Me: *-_-*
Boss: I developed a website in PowerPoint when I was intern.
Me: In PowerPoint? How?... Really..?
Boss: Ya, that's the type of skills I have. You're so lazy, you take so much time to make a simple webpage.
Me: -_-22 -
"What took you so long to do it? It looks simple."
"It looks simple because I spent time making it simple."10 -
When I was a kid, I used Dreamweaver and my mother would watch me doing things and she used to say "Oh, my dear there are lots of icons and buttons!!! How do you manage that? How do you know which one is for what purpose? You are really brilliant."
And now I use Atom IDE and she says "This looks very easy. Technology has evolved so much that you don't have to click so many buttons and just write simple lines, just as simple as writing letters and the software does the rest of the things. These softwares have done a brilliant job."
Seriously the technology has changed (and my mother too) !!!11 -
Providing work estimation:
Dev: This should take about 2 weeks
Non dev: Really? But it's so simple. Shouldn't be that long right? I think it can be done in one week.
*After one week*
Non dev: Why is it still not done? I thought you only need one week?9 -
Bulma framework, thanks for existing!
Lightweight, CSS only, very fucking easy to use and understand and a beautiful!
As a backend/server/security guy, front end is hell on earth for me. I understand the basics but that's it.
This fucker makes it so simple!19 -
Observed my bf spending at least a half hour browsing devRant in bed, so asked him what he'd do if devRant didn't exist anymore.
His simple reply?
"Cry"
May God help him tomorrow for the scheduled downtime... ;)8 -
Just remember, if someone ever makes a colony on Mars, you may have to support their timezone in your applications. And their day is longer, so a simple offset from UTC won’t do....14
-
Instagram coding pics are so fucking cringe worthy....like for real man. A picture of a simple cpp loop, or averyfuckingbasic Express hello world in some hipster filter with inspirational quotes and everyone looses their shit for it.
Instagram people are so easy.11 -
There once was a bright young engineer who was hired by a company to design their new light ship.
Like 50 seconds after getting inside the company, the engineer was approached by a douchebag in a business suite.
"Hey, can you make us a mock up of the ship's design in the next hour or so? Nothing fancy, it must be very simple! To not overcomplicate it! Just a simple mock up so we can all see what are we talking about in this project! Please do not overthink this!"
The engineer, young and naive, just folded some piece of paper and gave the douchebag a paper boat.
"Fantastic! That's all we need for the presentation for the investors!"
A couple hours later the suite was back screaming.
"YOUR FUCKING FARSE! YOUR SHITTY SHIP EMBARRASED US ALL! THE VERY MOMENT OUR CEO TRIED TO STEP ON IT IT SANK! YOU ARE FIRED AND WE WILL SUE YOU FOR INCOMPETENCE! I ASKED YOU SOMETHING SIMPLE AND YOU CAME UP WITH THIS OVER ENGINEERED PIECE OF CRAP, YOU SON OF A.. [many, maaany expletives suppressed for brevity sake]"
This is how I feel everytime someone asks for "a tiny change" or some "very simple solution".
If it was so simple that it could be done in such short notice, than why the fuck do it at all, instead of buying it? I heard people sell all sorts of things in the internet nowadays. Software fucking included.5 -
So Scratch is well crazy ass stupid, but for kids this is freaky awesome for a simple game builder that gets them interested.
This thing took like 10 minutes to make 😂
Move the witch with arrow keys and score points for catching the Ghouls.10 -
This is a thing I love about my job. You can solve something really easily for someone through simple instructions or a simple guide and those people praise you into heaven and are so thankful.
How something so simple can make someone's day, that makes my day.4 -
why in 2019, are browsers so fucking inconsistant.
im not even doing anything stupidly complicated.
simple UL List conataining links and background colors on the LI's....
and yet, every single browser is different, or in IE's case completly lost the plot.rant design in 2019 why cant we just do things the same even simple is complicated browsers front end sucks ass22 -
Builds a site around a CMS, so non devs can update content
Gets asked to make simple changes that can be made using said CMS
🤦♂️3 -
MOTHER FUCKER IDIOTS!!!
SO I HAVE TO ROLLBACK OUR PROD DEPLOYMENT BECAUSE IM THE ONLY FUCKER WHO UNDERSTANDS THE SIMPLE CONCEPT OF "DONT PUSH UNFINISHED CHANGES"?!?
DAMN!!!! FUCK YOU ALL...10 -
PM: Please get this done by tomorrow. It's just a small change.
Dev: No its not that simple.
PM: Why is it not simple? Please explain so I can understand.
Dev after a hard thought finally explains: blah blah blah
PM: Well, we have promised the client so please do this by tomorrow, thanks.
Dev: *bangwall9 -
Coolest thing i've built solo? I think it's my 3D snake multiplayer game.
It all started with a simple 2D snake game to teach programming basics at community college. Then i added a multiplayer mode based on a simple UDP implementation. Then i wondered how it would look ike in 3D and i had the idea to figure out how to implement a 3D engine by myself and i dove into the maths and wrote a simple 3D engine based on a windows forms picture box.
I showed the game to my colleagues and the loved it and we played it a lot.
So i added special mode boosters, and sound and map events and obervermode and observer polls.... you know it.
Here's a little collage of the journey...8 -
My first dev job was to code a minecraft plugin that was so simple but I made it sound super hard. The guy who bought it from me thought I was some professinal plugin maker so he paid me 100 swedish kronor for a plugin he could get for free ☺️9
-
So simple, but so brilliant!
I love the new code editor in Visual Studio 2017. 😁
(when you hover on a dotted line you see a preview of the part of code where it starts)6 -
I was getting tired of this guy asking me about really simple things, so when he asked me how to change the email signature I taught him how to google it. He unironically thanked me.3
-
Ok, so I was working with Python, I wanted to make a simple chatbot. I spend hours trying to figure out what was wrong, until it hit me... the prints weren't indented.8
-
"There are two ways of constructing a software design; one way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult." - C. A. R. Hoare
-
Devs online be like "I started learning to code when I was 2 years old and submitted my first application at 5, since then I've made a few simple apps and pull in 2 million a day, not much but it pays the bills"
So discouraging to come up with a novel idea for a simple product and spend a lot of time just to realize you're absolutely lost and severely lack the knowledge to even produce a working product of any sort. All the while some kid makes something "simple" 10x more complex than what you failed to do, and in like a day nonetheless.
How do people just pick up so much knowledge so quickly? How do they just figure out information they couldn't have possibly known like it's intuition?
Life is hard man.14 -
The problem is that timeline for a development work is decided by people who have only made PowerPoint presentations in their career ... So they feel everything is as simple as drag n drop 😆2
-
I love Json format. It is so simple, powerful, easy to read and all that good stuffs. There is only one thing I wish Json could support, that's commenting.13
-
A few weeks before, my neighbor came to me saying his wifi is hacked and someone is abusing it.
So I tried the wifi and found out there is no password. And the one who was abusing a simple open wifi was me XD.
So I set a password for her and disabled wps. But hopefully no one (expect devrant) will know I used that much bandwidth.2 -
DigitalOcean
My god, it's so easy and simple to spin up a server for a few minutes without being stuck with a contract of a year. Also, being able to manage all my domains there is a blessing :D4 -
teenage me: "people asking me to help them with the printer or simple tasks are so annoying"
now: helps anyone with anything just to catch a break and get some validation2 -
Why Whatsapp... Whyyy?? Life was so simple with you!! No stupid duck faces, no selfies, no freaking location updates of people I dont care about... Why did you have to go snapchat on us!8
-
"I am a fucking idiot"
These words ring loud when I'm stuck on a bug and the fix is so simple that I can't help but hate myself lol 😅3 -
I wrote some simple rules so everyone with an iPhone, iPad or OSX device that is visiting my site is redirected to https://stallman.org/apple.html28
-
Adios Motherfucker!
Finally got that pile of misery finished. That simple ticket exploded in complexity and had quite a bit of scope creep. So so glad it's over. I mean, apart from code review and QA. But still. It's done!
Also: I may have been drinking already. Clearly not enough from the painful lack of typos and silliness. Gonna go work on that.6 -
Plugging in a second wireless keyboard into my colleague's PC and typing so he thinks his computer is talking to him.
Simple but provided hours of fun!1 -
So I decided to commit to a big project. Since I want every user to have some default avatar before I implement file system, so I wrote a simple avatar generator:
https://txstc55.github.io/simple-av...
Feel free to generate some avatars!34 -
Seriously why hasn't anyone made a coffee brand just for devs called "java" .. So we can show some superiority over the simple folk drinking coffee..
😏☕🍪11 -
Damn, I really love Vue! 🥰
It's so clean and refreshingly simple compared to the shitfuckery called AngularJS (should be renamed to AngularJK or AngularRIP btw.).
I don't understand why I haven't tried Vue sooner... much mind boggle, so regret, many thinking...16 -
Pro security tip:
Use a very simple password because h4x0rs expect a difficult one so they can't cr4ck yours8 -
"I'll just fetch the data from Wikipedia, it must be really simple using their API"
I've never been so wrong.2 -
Boss: We need to make a site but the content will have bolded words where the user can hover over to see more for each term.
Me: Ok sounds simple.
B: It's for a client and we aren't gonna touch it in the future so make it simple.
M:okay... so no JavaScript?
B: That means we are only going to send them HTML and nothing else. Here's a list of the images they have.
Me:......
Now I have to make about 80 pages of pure html with inline styles on each page.10 -
Application level developer: It's so simple just import that dependency and use that API.
Low level developer : That's cute.2 -
This is probably a really simple stuff but I kinda got annoyed with medium big ass header and footer, so I decided to remove it.
https://github.com/devTeaa/...
Anyone with a medium link article list is welcome to add more6 -
Python seems so ... simple, yet beautiful.
(It's just ... a feeling, I only did the codecademy course and doodled on the command line by now.)
But this whitespace/tab thing and the fact that missing semicolons don't result in errors is just fucking confusing.15 -
using 21 js files (most are jquery based) and some 17 or so css files for a simple static one pager,
the only dynamic part is a filtered list of images,
big fuck you to whoever wrote this shit -
I like PHP.
It's not as bad as its reputation. Just because it's easy to learn, does not mean it's bad. In fact, with a framework like Laravel or Zend it's not so simple and keeps the whole spaghetti code developers away, which led to the bad reputation.9 -
Fukken School project
I spent days writing good documentation with step-by-step tutorials. I broke the project down into small, simple tasks.
Trying so hard to make everyone’s job easy.
And they still fail.
Give me a cookie2 -
For me, it was when I discovered how dynamic linking (.dll, .so) works, and why a linker is needed to run even a simple "Hello world!".5
-
As someone who doesn't know a lot about JavaScript, but occasionally needs to create some quick and simple scripts, I swear I'm going to kill someone if I read "just use jQuery" one more time on SO.7
-
I'm learning Unity! I don't have a lot of experience with C# or game development but it's fairly simple and super interesting so far so I'm excited!
!Rant, just excited :)8 -
when my relatives know I'm studying IT:
"ooh, did you know that this guy made this and become rich, and this guy made this app and is rich now too, so why haven't you made anything yet?"
//its not that simple...3 -
Hey im a fullstack DEVELOPER, not a fullstack DESIGNER, so dont fucking ask a colorblind person to 'just throw a simple design together, it shouldnt take more than 10 minutes'3
-
I might have got my first freelancing gig. It sounds like a really simple thing, might just take one hour or so.
So comes the eternal question from the freelancing noob: how much should I charge?
I'm thinking approximately the hourly pay I get from my full-time job. Does that make sense? Even though it might just take one hour?1 -
A question for all the front-end developers of devRant. How the fuck do you get a really good color scheme for a website?
P. S. I am not a front-end dev so please simple words17 -
Got a simple task
Decided to refactor some related shit so I don't have duplicated code
Get loads of problems with the shit I'm trying to refactor, now I'm late with the simple task13 -
• Plan out everything by taking notes on the rough functionality of the project and how it could be done in a preferably simple way
• Writing code, but documentating it while doing so
• Also trying to write clean code so it can be more easily built upon
• Also keeping everything simple. If I'm using nasty, unreadable one-liners because of efficiency advantages, I'm putting a comment there for what could alternatively be used + explaining it
• Abandon it because side projects never get done1 -
Was so confused what the new walrus operator did. Why don't the docs give a simple comparison example like this?5
-
Wasted a couple of hours because I was overthinking it so damn hard. Reduced a whole module into a simple, single function.
I should stop adding feature I don't even need, but think other might need😰 -
bro just learn C bro I promise it's all smooth sailing bro haha lol just take up HTML with CSS bro its a piece of cake bro what bro lol just start coding up differential equations with numpy library haha its so simple bro just start with Ruby bro it will take only couple days bro what lol bro take this aeronautical course on how to code an airplane simulation bro its so simple bro just start algorithms on cryptography bro its so easy i cant bro just start writing drivers for printers bro haha lol just start writing a bootloader for a new Linux distro bro lol haha easy bro just make a billion dollar company bro haha its so simple.

Introducing No.js! A revolutionary new framework. Just build your templates and then... Stop. No worrying about browser compatibility. Web dev has never been so simple.4
-
Have an 'anger' project open to the side, so when you get annoyed or tired of the paid work, take a quick break and jump into that project to clear your head, even if it is just a simple command line tool, done it before and it's quite a good thing from experience
-
I can't explain why, but I really like writing small tools in shell script.
Its so simple but so powerful.7 -
Why is Drupal so hard to learn?!!!!!!
It feels like you are learning an entirely new language. Yes it makes hard things simple, at the same time making simple things hard to accomplish.
And also modules are buggy, you would fix bugs instead of doing your tasks.
I want to learn Drupal but I guess it is not friendly for beginners like me.12 -
So, just started my new job (stoked btw). At the last interview - boss: what kind of OS do you work on?
Me: I'm a simple guy who uses windows and notepad++
First day at work - get a brand spankin' new macbook and endure the most unproductive day ever...19 -
First post, woo!
So I just decided to create a simple coming soon page, slowly getting to grips with javascript finally (I think) but I like just diving into the code and see what comes out at the end of it.
Demo: https://coming-soon-template.netlify.com/...2 -
I love Flutter. So simple. Such good docs. Not totally shit multiplatform. Flutter is my new favorite framework. Good job Google5
-
someone: so what do you do?
me: I'm a software developer
someone: oh, can you design me a logo?
me: no
someone: something simple, I'm sure...
me: NO, IT'S NOT MY F***ING JOB6 -
I guess this happens to everyone but damn, hate it when dreaming about code, and not just any code, but the code your enthusiastic about, somehow everything seems to work, so that when you wake up and sit in front of the computer you just go blank... what was that code again, it was so sleek, so simple, yet so robust...
12 hours later dream about it again to wake up realizing you wont ever be able to wake up remembering the code in the detail...1 -
I just want to say,
wow the Cloudflare API is awesome.
In less then an hour (from a blank file - to automation and tested) I was able to setup a DDNS task that basically just pulls my public ip (see https://devrant.com/rants/2050450/... for details) comparing it to the current DNS records for and update them if anything has changed in the past 30 minutes.
So kudos to these guys letting me in next to no time having a simple yet elegant way of dealing with my missing static ip.
Why can’t all APis be this simple?3 -
How can you fuck up your code so badly that what should be a reasonably simple desktop app is lagging on any system, no matter how fast?8
-
10 Hours straight.
I thought a simple list in Android isn't a big thing, because I have made some css. I was so wrong.3 -
Today I got more praise for adding a spinning animation while loading page than the 5 months of complex coding I've done so far.
Users are simple, look shiny, ignore that nothing works.1 -
@trogus are you responsible for designing all these cool avatars?!? they are so simple and sleek and AWESOME how did you do it what do you use?4
-
programming is not a piece of cake that you come and eat.
friend of mine thinks programming is so simple.
fuck you who think its easy it takes hours of dedication6 -
Keep it simple, but at the same time try to build it so that any known or unknown future change can be easily implemented. Do not block your future.1
-
when undeveloped brain intern ask how to do something so fucking mundane, or simple as fuck shits which they can just google it in like 0.42069 femtoseconds.5
-
Possibly the start of a very bad adventure: I'm helping my brother-in-law set up a website for a business he'd beginning with his wife. I'll be needing to provide him a simple cms & shopping cart that he can manage. No payments as we want to just use PayPal so as to avoid having to actually manage user data & credit card information.
Wish me well....
Also advices appreciated cause otherwise, I'm gonna use a simple Drupal or WordPress site with like 1 theme and 0 plug ins.4 -
*meeting on Monday*
Client: so I've got this project I want you to do, it's simple right?
Me: seems so
Client: so I'll pay you this much because it's so simple
Me: uhhhhhhhh
Underpaying client: I also told my higher ups that you'd be done by Friday you can do that yeah
Me: ..................2 -
- - Hey buddy, can you create a simple App for me to publish on the Play store?
- let me see first what features you need
- - **Spending 20 minutes talking about so many features and out of the box design**
- that's it?
- - yes that is it, it'svery simple I know it !
- so you think it's simple huh? so fo it yourself !...4 -
Making games for my TI-Nspire CX CAS is so much fun!
It's so simple but you can do a lot with it. It's also a bit of a challenge because you don't have a huge API with lots of methods and events. You have to use what you have.
Oh btw you can program it with Lua!15 -
I've written a script that logs my time tracker information into my timesheet at work and its fucking fantastic, so simple yet so satisfying. I needed to tell someone5
-
This was about two years ago, and is so fucking simple. But it's because I fucked up something so goddamn simple that I'll never be able to forget.
One of the stupidest fucking things I've done?
Went into the GNOME Disks utility trying to wipe a SanDisk Cruzer USB drive. BAM! There goes the entirety of my /dev/sda disk! Oh, and you know all partitions on that disk?? Gone!! Nothing I could do.
I don't know which pisses me off about myself more: The fact that Linux has more complicated tools that do the same exact job but make me think about what the actual fuck I'm doing thus preventing fuckups, or the fact that I was too fucking lazy to use them and decided to go with the dirt simple option and still managed to fuck myself over in the end...
Lesson for you kids that haven't fucked yourselves over in a way this dumb yet: ALWAYS have that backup installer USB somewhere. ALWAYS. -

So often my stackoverflow posts are answered in a matter of minutes. I wonder if I am just extremely fortunate or if my questions are extremely simple.2 -
Hypothetical Question:
Write a complex code to make it efficient Or
Write a simple code so that the next developer who works on it understands the code easily.10 -
I am a bad developer. I know nothing. I had a very simple requirement just to change the strings.
I couldn't collect all the requirements. I connected with PM offline, slow replies and miscommunications. Ahh!! How will I be shipping bigger projects? I have 3 years of development, in my last company we worked totally different though.
So, at the time when I thought I will be raising a PR I am stuck on the requirements.
I am a dumb shit. I can't do anything right. A simple requirement I am not able to deliver. I am so embarassed. :(12 -
When I just spent 45 minutes ripping my code apart clueless why something so simple won't work, just to find out that the problem is spelling event.keyCode as event.keycode.. maybe don't code while tired at 1am rookie. Complete moron over here5
-
Can you make me just a simple site? Only a few pages..... It won't take you long, we're family too so how about I pay 10% of the real cost??
Weeks of personal free time lost, and a fully fledged eCommerce site 28 pages deep with CMS controlled everything later....5 -
So I hear some drama going on in Vuejs community related to next version which will bring breaking changes.
https://dev.to/danielelkington/...
I was just getting into Vue and feeling happy about learning such a beautiful and simple framework.
What do you guys think?12 -
Literally swear I despise flash. So, had a small job to update a page that consisted of a list of members, clicking on a members name will populate an adjacent div with 3 or 4 contact names. Simple stuff on the face of it.
However, it turned out the previous developer had decided to use flash for this, meaning there is a horrible .swf plonked into the page.
I mean seriously, why can't things be simple? :(2 -
I couldn't sleep so I made a CLI 3D to 2D cube displayer in C# in an hour. Controls are (WASD) or (arrow + DEL + END). If you press ALT, the cube will rotate faster. Simple af. This is perfect as my first public repo.

> Moment you thought you did a good job, but ended up failing
> Times the bug wasn't actually your fault
> Times you took the blame for a junior or other dev
> Times someone took the blame for you
> Times you got away with something you shouldn't have.
> Most valuable data loss
> The bug you never fixed
> Most satisfying bug to fix
> Times where a "simple" task turned out to be not so simple
> Debug code left in production?
> Moments you wish you could undo
> Most satisfying optimization
> Have you ever been ranted about? -
Man, making scripts for random shitty tasks is so god damn nice. Like pushing a new version in a repo. Throw together a script to find metadata and kubernetes files and identifies and update versions automatically, then commit, tag and push. Simple script, not even 100 lines of bash, but saves so many silly mistakes.16
-
Eloquent is so fucking slow, my (dead) grandma queries faster. It takes the fucking double of time on a simple query with only one join for maybe ~200 rows... From now on I go fucking back to raw SQL in my Laravel projects. 😤16
-
OpenCL...
Okay so I'm completely new to OpenCL and I just put some stuff together to get a simple GPU Kernel running. Well that worked pretty good.
The reason I got into OpenCL was because I wanted to do some simple SHA1 cracking on my GPU. What I did was, I got a fast implementation of SHA1 from the internet, which works perfect in normal C++, but for OpenCL I have to rewrite some things. So I replaced all the memset and memcpy and so on with simple for loops and it still worked. Now, this should work on OpenCL, too, I thaught. God I was wrong!
Somehow the clBuildKernel got executed normally, but when I try to access the returned value (the error code) I get an Access Violation? It just doesn't make any sense to me?
Well I will try some stuff tomorrow again and I will find a solution for sure, but still, until now I just don't understand it. -
Not have privileges in prod database, so i have to create a simple 'hidden API func' in the backend of apps that i develop, so it can receive raw query and give response for the results, the REST API is (/getReport). Still Works :/2

- Did you know Google is who manages Android.
- It's a simple fact.
- so you know Visual Studio is not designed for Android? Then why it's easier to build a hello world app in visual studio but Android studio which Google build it?
- O_o22 -
How do you write your "identity" in your code so that others can see that it's you who made it?
Do you do it with a simple "made by" or do you write more?17 -
I think I've reached the point where I've been programming for so long that I have off by one errors doing normal math by hand. Nothing more humbling than getting beat out to a bunch of simple math problems to a grade schooler.
-
In PHP, constants can only be of simple data types like strings or floats.
You can't make a database connection a constant because it's not a simple data type.
That makes the only way of accessing complex "constants" within functions using the keyword global... which is not encouraged and forces you to make the database connection global (that may not be convenient in some software patterns).
The last option is passing the database connection as a parameter (either to the function or to the constructor of the instance whose methods will use the connection)... which would be good if I didn't want to go full OO. Because it's a pain to do so.
So all in all, constants are not well supported by PHP.
Come on, constants...12 -
So I came up with an interesting idea for a quick side project. "Should be doable in an afternoon," I thought to myself.
Then I sat myself down and started diagramming all the components and sections I'd need to build. Suddenly, simple project no longer seems so simple.
...dammit, not again.1 -
Just looking at the basic syntax of Kotlin gives me half a chubby. hahaha
It is just so damn simple and sexy!
https://kotlinlang.org/docs/...2 -
Was working on a game and I hated having to hardcode stuff I wanted to add so I started splitting it into external json files but by the end (and to an extent still learning it) learnt how to do mod support and simple user generated content, really cool stuff to learn about.
-
Just had an interview. First few minutes felt good then they gave me a simple coding task.
It WAS SOOOO SIMPLE, but my brain just blocked and stopped working. It was litterly just a console application and you had to print some symbols dynamically.
Im so mad at myself.3 -
Best advice so far: "KISS: Keep It Simple and Stupid"
That works every time because your design of the code will be understandable. Your code must seldom to be refactored. You aren't that asshole who never comment and document anything. And the most important part: The code works as designed without flaws!4 -
So I started to write a small script that my boss asked me to do.
I thought I will be able to do the job simple in just one file.
after 5 days, mostly researching and writing like 10 important functions I gave up the idea of being easy and I configured it as a project.
Feels so smooth now.1 -
Got inspired by @linuxxx to do an simple URL shortener service.
Turned out to be actually useable!
So here it is: https://srt.clan.rip/
Got the domain for free. That's why it is looking so strange.19 -
Light Shot is the worst app and website ever .... No privacy
So I write a simple PHP script for Windows machine, to randomly generate integer and char for randomly open URL.
By running ```php run.php``` you able to see some sensitive information sometimes.
Refer https://github.com/johnmelodyme/...6 -
Wasted 2 hours of my life trying to make an actionbar display white text on a dark background after migrating the legacy code from ActionBarSherlock to the supportactionbar.
And guess what? That fucking actionbar still displays black text.
What. The. Fuck.
Giving up on this for today...2 -
I hate developing for iOS. So many certificates here and there for simple things. And to top it all off, sometimes, you get people reviewing your app that say you can't upload to the App Store for stupid reasons. Does anyone feel the same way?10
-
I love Heroku. It's so simple to use with all the add-ons, the deployment options and the fact that it's free for most of my projects. Heroku FTW.1

loop {
So I want to write a simple program in language X. Create a new project. Language X does not have this feature. Okay, Let me write a library that does that for language X. Create a new project. What was I doing again?!

Yes, this will be fun and very simple ...2 -

Explaining difficult things in a way that they are understandable by non-expert audiences.
This helps a lot to focus on simplicity when programming. And simple means it'll get understood by your peer programmers, it is simpler to test and it will be easier to maintain, and so on... -
I fell in love with CodeIgniter...
It's just a so simple but powerful and feature-rich PHP-Framework.
I like prefer CodeIgniter over Laravel!15 -
Just started using Electron. Seems alright. But
coming from Java, I have no fucking idea how that shit works. Started with something simple, so I wanted to show currrent date and time in a <h1>.
Well, I'm stuck. Time to read docs again :) -
After creating my own PHP MVC framework with Twig as templating engine, everything is now so simple and so fast, I juat cant belive how much I understand now. The development is just so smooth, you know exactly what to do all the time... And for my simple project, it does not even hurt that much to use PHP (and its even strictly typed 7.2, so not that bad). I think that I am in love. ❤6

I am so f'ing stupid. Half an hour of debugging, only to discover the problem was a simple typo. this feels bad.4

My most humbling experience was finding the source code online to the original Pokemon games. It was right after I had finished my first text based Linux console game and I was looking up other programs source codes just for shits and giggles. Most of them were simple and I learned a few simple tricks but the red and blue Pokemon were the first codes I saw that fascinated me. The addressing, the memory allocation, even the simple audio processing was simply genius. So many unique innovations and techniques. If I achieve 1/5th of the skill I found in those files, I can die a happy programmer!3

I don't get why the most devs are so into defending they're favorite programming language. I mean choose the language that gets the job done and not what's your favorite if language b sucks at doing a then I chose another one. So simple but most people don't get it. It's like the pc VS console discussion. Just play both period1

A colleague of mine was very smart, but didn't know how to use classes in .net or object literals in js, so he organized his data with arrays.
It worked, of course, but, god, did I hate working with his code. It would take hours to make simple changes.1 -
FUCKING CSS and browser inconsistencies.
Trying to make a simple static site but these fucking browsers are making it so hard I want to program console application instead.
Also for some reason mobile Firefox don't give the right window height and width fuck everything.9 -

OMFG caddy server is fucking beautiful, I'm falling in love with it at every test... So simple 😍
Does anyone have experience to share with it?10 -
I am working on a boring project. At the beginning, I wanna create some fun on it, so I decided to write a simple game.........And some time later, I found myself on devrant instead.

How do I avoid carpal tunnel? Simple: my school bag (it's a laptop bag) usually has like 3 laptops in it plus miscellany tools and such, making it over 100 pounds usually. I also don't use a strap, so it's hand-hold only. It also helps train grip strength!4

So I'm on my morning stroll. Walking, enjoying, watching the world around me.. It's nice how cherries blossom. They smell very tempting to stop there and enjoy the moment. Some flowers under the cherry...
Why do plants blossom again? Oh yeah, that's right, to exchange some speciments in order to grow fruit and seeds. To have their offspring. Just like every other living macroorganism [with a few exceptions ofc]. Life has no other way to survive but to exchange genetic material between two parties and only then trigger growth of the new life.
And that is a very strict rule. No more, no less: it takes exactly 2 organisms to make new life. But why is that? If my memory serves, theory of evolution says that life is like business: cut the losses and let the profits run. Over time it discards everything not required for the organism in order to save energy, and only successful new "investments" remain in the genome. The unsuccessful ones die before they proliferate, so the bad genes shall not survive.
It also says that very simple things, very simple changes lead to very complex outcomes. Us. Life.
But what is simple about life having to need 2 other lives? Exactly 2. It's either simple or efficient, depends on perspective. BUT IT IS NOT BOTH. Look at cells. They just split in half and multiply. Dead simple. It takes one of them to make another one. But with mammals, birds, reptiles, plants and other macroorganisms [excpt fungi] this is not the case! Why?!? I can't think of any scenario where two generic microorganisms, following some dead simple mutations, would come up w/ something that inefficient and overly complex. Like they're living on their own, multiplying by division, and smth very simple happens and they can no longer divide, only mate in pairs. The primitive, efficient and simple mechanism gets terminated and replaced with a different one, incredibly complex one!
Sure, we have protozoa which have similar reproductive mechanisms. They exchange genetic material to multiply.
But look at our, human cells. They dont need that! Look at some reptiles, some plants that only take one to make another. They don't pair as well! It's simple. Efficient. Why do protozoa need 2 for the species to survive?
It's not simple and efficient [tho helps us adapt, but its not my point for now]. See, things like this make ne wonder. What if we, the life, are not as accidental as we think? What if this whole mechanism was set off by someone or something billions of years ago? That's mean there are much older, much more superior cognitive organisms than us. What if protozoa was version 3 of new life [the first two did not survive]? Viruses - v2? Sea creatures - v3, reptiles - v4, and so on until they came up with us, mammals? That'd surely mean we are not alone in this universe. Are they watching us? Will they create a new species any time soon? What's our purpose, are we just an experiment?
And so, from cherry blossoms to existensial dilemma, my stroll is over. Time for breakfast :)1 -
With one of my best friends during university years (9 years ago) we thought about a simple wysiwyg online platform (before WIX or others) to create simple sites . We started working on it , during multiple nights , we got a working demo (we got a nice intership with it ) the problem ... it was written in FLASH (AS3) witch died 2 years after . So the project died with it . I've learned alot.1

Boss: I want a simple form builder.
Me: Ok.
Boss: It must cover all our customers needs. They can build their own form and save their customer submission.
Me: What is their needs?
Boss: Quiz Form, Sales Form, Events Form, Bla bla bla..
Me: Ok, that's not simple so we need to analyze the system first.
Boss: It's similar to wordpress (referring to wp cms) so it must be easy.
Me: But, Wordpress already started before I work here. And..
Boss: I already have a customer and I need it in 1 months! -

Boss: I'm not seeing the fix for the simple text change issue
Me: (who cares about little design details which said boss really likes about me) That simple text change is a long line of text and breaks on all screen sizes besides your big ass monitor, so I asked for a designers opinion, which I finally got today.
My bad for caring just a little bit... -

Go assign a super simple ticket to your "product owner" or "manager" or whoever the hell claims they "work so hard" and "have the vision" or whatever blah blah blah when in reality YOU'RE the one working 12 hour days, completing the features used by THOUSANDS.
Just try it. They'll never complete it. I guarantee it. Here I am looking at one that is three weeks old asking to update the f&*(@#$ credit card credentials for a simple log service to be reactivated.
So sick of this backward world where us devs never get any credit.
Who wants to start a software union with me?2 -
Hey guys so we need to start taking accessibility seriously, it’s the law - right now we currently do nothing.

why is every auth provider utter and complete shit?
why are docs and tutorials that try to teach auth so complete shit?

So I'm in the process of learning go for building RESTful microservices and I have a really stupid but simple question.

So you're working on a product that basically the main thing it does is fire off http requests and parse their responses into a nice model. We've made some nice helper class that allows you to do this easily, but a simple piece of functionality is not in there yet.
You agree to add this one simple function and decide to:
- Not conform to coding standards set by the team
- Document its behavior which does NOT match the implementation
- Not write a single fucking unit test to prove it's functionality

Is it just me, or do Adobe products just get progressively harder to use? I'm thoroughly frustrated with trying to figure out how to do simple things like annotating screenshots in Photoshop, like I used to do several versions ago. So recently, one of my coworkers had some issues with their configurations on Visual Studio : To test our feature, we have a specific setup that I won't describe here. Thing is, it's not a simple localhost. Remember that.
The issue of the configuration was on that feature : they went back on localhost for no reason and couldn't get it back as before. So the testing was different since some uses cases weren't redo-able on their setup.
So my co-worker had that and nothing had done the trick to fix it, so they just left it like that.
Then another one had the problem. And another one, and another one, etc. And I don't.
So what was the problem ? An update that messes up everything in the setup.
A simple internal update. Glad I didn't updated yet. Now I'm the only one in my team (4 people right now) who still has that feature. -

Hello everyone
Do any of you python programmers have any tips for simple projects you can do to learn python?
I am mainly a backend/system engineer comig from C++, slowly picking up rust and have been using bash as my scripting language so far. bash is nice because it is so fundamental in the linux world but you just dont get very far with it and its usually not pleasant to write.
So I would like to learn python, though I have no idea what I can do to practice it, so that I can just quickly whip up a script the next time I need something done in the file system or want to write a simple parser for something.
Do you guys have an idea of something small (not necessarily useful) which makes use of pythons strengths? Just looking for ideas here, so stick it all out 👋💕12 -
Cab someone please tell me why windows has so many update but still taking so many time to even open a simple app????3

I’m very surprised at the lack of PHP micro frameworks with correct Namespace and Class support. I had to spend my weekend adding it, as well as making it so you can easily add a ORM library to it.
Sure I could use Laravel or Codeignitior, but I just needed something simple for rapid development of simple GUIs for desktop and server applications. I couldn’t justify copying over 6500 files for something I’m only going to use a quarter of its features. Now, I can just use composer to install the features I need.8 -

5h spent on actual bug fixing, code reviews and so on.

Find a simple project that I think would fit the technology and Google how to so every single baby step I think my application will need to do.

I tend to overengineer. Why? Because I had a view in JavaFX with its controller that had a bunch of key listeners which changed the UI. I wanted to change the view based on wifi connection/no connection with a server, which was managed in a Client class. The controller took the client to give it a message that client then had to send. For "separation of concerns" I created a separate view + controller for the "not connected" state.
Now the Client knew all about the connection, so I put up the Observer pattern and wanted the Main (Application) class to swap the layouts as an Observer of the Client. After an Exception on FX thread and Platform.runLater(), to solve the issue, I faced a new problem: the key presses weren't executed anymore. I still don't know why this happens. Maybe I'm missing something.🤷
Then met with one of my group partners (it's a uni project):
Let's attach the Observer to the original controller. Have only the original view that changes due to the controller updates as Observer. Let's see if that might even remotely work...🤔
It worked🤦😂 -
One of the most irritating things is when a marketing or a sales guy comes up with something so fucking simple and obvious but it starts gaining the smallest amount of traction and then the bastard starts acting as if he is Steve Jobs.
-
So, you COULD make a remarkably simple SDK to upload files that needs little documentation, OR we could make an SDK that is basically impossible without three triple-shots worth of espresso and 20 Stack Overflow windows. I think we'll take the more frustrating one3

!Rant what's so hard about multithreading for newbie programmers. (An actual question. Trying to tutor some friends who just don't get it)
It's practically a requirement for MVC.
In c# it's extremely simple. Just create a background worker with a handler/interface.2 -
There's this one customer wanted the most cheapest server for hosting their simple website, I suggested them Bluehost, hostinger , etc. But he expected to pay only 0.45 MYR per year...
So I told him that's I can make it for free, easier and fastest....... In LOCALHOST.
LOCALHOST the fastest, host there.4 -
Has it ever happened to you that you take a simple 6 hrs task, build it and then redesign to make it generic by wasting 30 hrs more and spend another 20 hrs documenting it so that others can use that generic feature?1

Practicing Pomodoro.
Keeping a Journal.
Using Git Flow.
Learning Modular Structure.
Cursee trying to live a simple life with disciplines.
I have lived enough year without any discipline. So I wanna check the other side. Maybe this is what I need. Who knows.4 -
I had a good time delivering pizzas in uni. The work is simple but there's just enough variety in destinations so it's not boring. The pay is shit though.1

After a few days of Mac. I seem to understand the pain of using a Mac. Sometimes doing a simple thing in Linux, it requires 2x efforts to do so in Mac. It is very user friendly, but it needs more developer friendly. It is very different.13

Has anyone ever tried making symlinks on windows?
OH MY GOD. How can someone fuckup something so simple. It really pisses me off.
I mean. I am obliged to `git submodule add` because i can't `ln -s`7 -
So... Three of us have the task to do security reviews for one team... As to who reviews what, we decided on the basic algo of assigning an index to our names and then doing (ticket number) % 3 to get the index and therefore the reviewer for that task... Simple enough, but still you need to modulo the number and remember your index so I created a simple .html file so we can easily see who reviews which ticket by inputting the ticket number... In a hurry I named it whoreview.html
Today, the manager saw it and said to rename it before HR gets involved :D -
It broke again this morning.... Apparently he didn't finish making the change yesterday... or maybe he realised after I got his server hard with some payback...
He changed the download url now but it's relatively simple so 20min change.. -
I just spent like 4 hours trying to figure out how to make a simple httprequest to the google directions api in android... nothing worked :( running it in a seperate thread, tweaking the address...
I'm sure there is something simple I'm missing... but I'm feeling broken and defeated right now...
They make it look so easy on the android5 -
I just started studying and commenting did not seem so important to me because we've only written simple programs so far. Recently, a friend showed me his book and a story that was in there.
They bought a code and all the names were in Hebrew. Not so bad, if not all comments would be hebrew too. Wtf!
Now I know why commenting is important.1 -
!rant after struggling with version control in a very restricted enviroment where nothing can be installed on the user's machine.
I finally found a way that was allowed after days of digging, so simple yet beautiful, thy name be clickonce. -
Guys.. i am currently pursuing BCA , and i am also learning web development with Html, css,js, jQuery, bootsrap. But i see the popularity of react nowadays.. So should i must learn react or first learn simple js or jQuery first as always?7
-
I'm struggling with actually quite simple but yet so complicated human behaviour.
How does one know what some other thinks of what the one thinks?
That's rethorical question. One simply does not know. But why would I even ask such a question then?2 -
Debugging my resume built with some simple js/jQuery functions
Took 30 minutes
Missing a comma and semicolon I didn't even remove
I didn't know any other appropriate reaction so I just threw up instead -
Game developers:
Don't you always have dreamed with making a game like Flappy Bird that is so simple but gets so popular and you become millionaire?
2nd question: why do you think that this game was the lucky one that got so much fame? Because there are thousands of other games like it.1 -
On my last project we needed to have about 5 or 6 different webservices running and 2 ssh tunnels open to run the app locally. So i wrote a simple script to automatically split my terminal window into seperate panes and cd into each repo. I also had a script to go into every repo and git pull. Really simple scripts, but very useful.

I have a domain and nginx server configured on digital ocean. Im trying to make it so i can forward any emails to support@mydomain.com to an existing gmail.
can anyone link a simple guide for this? everything i saw seems to be half solutions that didnt work for me7 -
I want to start learning to write a simple game server emulator in C#. The game works LAN but it gets LAN disconnected when internet drops so some sort of keepalive is implemented. I can copy the files to another device and it works online without a login etc so there is no online authentication but as soon as internet drops the LAN game goes down to so i need to emulate the online update server or something like that to prevent that from happening. (spotted with Wireshark etc)
I don't have much experience , just created a simple tcp client/server console app but in this case I ofcrs will only need a server one in combination with custom dns. Any tips on where to start? Does someone have an example game server emulator? or update server emulator?1 -
1OWE Android App
A simple mobile app to make deals with your colleagues, friends, wife, kids and others on how much you owe them (chocolates, $$$, trips, pizzas, etc).
Deal gets activated, when friend confirms it.
So next time, when some dev helps you, you owe them (something). -
Just finished my internship. I had one month vacation. Now I kinda feel like I want to reach my limits in web development by creating something simple but really useful and fun to build. Can't think of any so please rant I'm open to your suggestion! thank you6
-
And why is symfony so fucking slow? Well I guess it has something to do with depending on code annotations for everything, or every simple task requiring a whole cloud of a thousand classes, stupid design decisions....I fucking hate symfony, piece of shit software
-
So for my work i need to build an app (preferably react native) which runs completely inside a webview. Is there any sane way to get the Webview to display a simple Web App made with standard Js? Im losing my mind over it5
-
So, I have a friend and he asked me to do a discord bot for him. (The language was kinda up to me and I chose Python). Nothing complicated (theoretically). I coded it, tested it and sent it to him. But after installing it, he got a different issue EVERY single day. And he didn't change anything! The most infuriating part is, that I couldn't even reproduce the issues he had. WHY? Why can't it just work? Why can't a simple project not just be simple?3
-
I spend so much time trying to come up with great app ideas, and something as simple as The List App (http://li.st) goes viral.2
-
So I'm trying to learn Rust and I want to do like a simple project with it but I have no clue what..
Any ideas?4 -
Apparently, Spotify requires auth on all of their endpoints. So now, if I want to write a simple CRUD app I have to deal with fucking OAuth.2
-
I'm surprised by how complex simple things could become. Alt+<key> in vim didn't work, so I copied a script from stackoverflow that makes vim poll the esc key every 50ms, if it is pressed together with another key in this period it is interpreted as Alt. My terminal sends esc+<key> instead of Alt+<key> so it works perfectly.

Android DevStudio. So much work for a simple button! Even worse when you're trying to call API and explicitly return a type of data that you need.
-
Okay, so last to last week I came across Hacktoberfest's advert somewhere on the web. I was so excited to know about the cool stickers and tshirts that companies let out on doing some simple work that I posted PRs in many companies repos and here I am completing the task for devRant. Please help me get some :D
Thanks a lot!! -
Trying to change security settings for Internet Explorer in a Windows Server is so 😫.
I just want to download a simple file from email.
What would I do that on a server you may ask.
Well is just a virtual machine in a testing environment, so it doesn't matter.1 -
So im about to finish a mean stack bootcamp in 2 weeks. Im working on my final project and its nothing too fancy im just doing a simple inventory app (i have future plans for it to bundle it into an entire suite for a specific subset of retail). So i take my live coding exam and fork it (simple app with crud finished) and im trying to add an edit feature that populates tge fields with the prior data. Spent the whole of yesterday working on it from 12a-midnight. Just this one feature to bring previous values into an edit page. Seems simple enough. But it wasnt working right. So im looking all over posted on SO even got a friend of mine thats been programming for 20 years to help me and we cant figure out why it thinks a variable is undefined when it clearly has a value dorectly before the save method fires. (Console.logged that shit)
At about midnight i realize its because i needed to write a router.put in the api because i was just using the regular save originally :/ -
Ever started to like a company so much that you wanna subscribe to their spams because it was so simple to unsubscribe from their spam?
-
Answering simple questions on Stackoverflow and gaining confidence that I have somewhat improved. Losing my mind on bugs from my shitty code just to find out the answer hours after on SO, explained in the best and simplest manner and realizing that I've actually improved only by a toe.
-
I've always managed the different versions of python manually on my machine, and set up virtual environments off of them.
Now I've found pyenv, it's so simple now.
Can't wait to see what plugins are available for it2 -
Everything that isn't code drives me nuts. Like build scripts? How do those even. And I always find myself fighting against my IDE to do simple things. And how do I use a debugger? Println statements only take me so far.

So I'm making a very simple ionic app that creates a highly customizable feed from different wordpress-based websites of user's choice.
Can you please spam this post with wordpress websites? Just to add some "default" websites to the user5 -
I have to deal with the hardest part of programming: naming things! i fucking hate it, being so incredible uncreative finding a name for a side project..
So heres my idea: I want to build a little cli tool (and probably in the future an app or a web interface) with a rest api on my server for simple storing text snippets. I will be a simple key value store, but my goal is experimenting with new languages and software ;)
I can't imagine a cool name for that thing, do you have an idea? :)3 -
When did it become difficult to wrap 3d models in textures? I swear it used to be as simple as dragging a graphic on to an object :(
I feel so old and in the way.2 -
Ok so.. thoughts on MySQL,
SELECT max(column_name) from table_name;
Outputs the max value in the column by kinda traversing the whole column huh... Recursive🤔
While
SELECT concat(column_name) from table_name; outputs simple endl separated srrings. . .. no recursion. PHP backend sucks
😣7 -
Simple. Get that fucking project I’ve been on and off working on (mostly) by myself for the last year and a half or so into production so that I can begin the transition to my new role… where I get to be a major pain in the arse for all our devs with my security pitchfork. Mwahaha!
-
Being told all those crazy startup ideas by friends and family with the comment "this is so simple, I'm sure I can learn to code and do it in 2 weeks"
-
Why cant every server-application have a feature like openssh AuthorizedKeysCommand?!
So pretty much a command-hook for authentication.
You pass username, password and additional stuff to it, and its STDOUT and exit-status determine the authentication result.
No, instead of something so simple,
You're forced to use MySQL,LDAP...4 -
So I created simple blog for family member. She only writes three posts within a six month time frame, and then this morning she sends me an email asking for some changes. In it says if it's to time consuming that she can create a blogspot...
-
Lemme just say... Wow. Wireguard... It's so incredibly simple and elegant. I cannot believe how easy and how little reading it needed to set it up.
And unlike OpenVPN, the Android client is even able to override the system's DNS servers, meaning I can finally start blocking nosy apps from contacting their big brothers in the cloud via DNS blackholing!
Wow. Wireguard... 10/10. Simple, fast to set up, elegant.4 -
So I have a MEAN app that is super simple just basic CRUD operations.
Everything works fine. Decide to extend it by bringing values over into fields on an Edit page. More work than I thought it would be but got it working, just passed values through an array in the URL. Pretty simple. So then I click save and it's broken. _id is apparently now undefined. Oh I posted it on the Javascript chat on SO and got nothing, instead everyone is talking about porn folders, a tweet, a random picture that looks like either a woman doing oral to a guy or a guy reading a book, and now Obamacare. FFS just answer my damn question >.< So I post it on SO itself and still crickets there. Worst part is I know its something simple I just don't know what it is because I'm still new to programming in general only been a few months in a bootcamp just learning the basics of MEAN stack (which I do like a lot tbh)
Man SO is so frustrating. -
Linux: sudo apt-get install IDE dev-libs etc
Windows: install wxMSW, extract compressed binaries, set environment variables, set preprocessor/project settings in VS2017, set search directories, etc.
Why is it so ANNOYING to set up a simple GUI development library for C++ on Windows? -
So I'm using bxslider on a site I'm developing...when it's not running everything lays out nicely (pic1). Then using a simple script and options it functions just right (pic 2) but a huge layout issue in the thumbnail pager happens (pic 3) and I can't locate where or why. Any ideas?
-
Why is there no music player for Linux with a clean, organized UI and only the basic features? (showing album covers, search, sorting by genre, artist etc)? All players so far are either buggy, look like shit, or have some cloud sync stuff .. I just want a simple mp3 player man D:14
-
Need a backend advice. I have a php webhosting with a mysql database and im looking for a simple REST API backend solution so that my android app could fetch data from mysql via api. Any suggestions?13
-
Fuck xrdb and it's shitty documentation. Why is it so hard to setup pywal ? Why can't you put simple docs? Configuring anything sucks!1
