Did a very tiny migration for a client which would normally be done against our hourly rate but decided to do it for free as it would take me like 5 minutes and it was a very important thing for him and he actually offered to pay.
Fuck it, he'll be very happy, it doesn't take me much time and I know my boss would approve.
Did the migration, messaged the client and he thanked me.
Next day a cake arrives at work with my name on it and "thanks for helping us with the migration!"
Now that's how you make my fucking day!19 -
Guy called in:
Guy: hello, i can't seem to login to the sql database, could you check if the ip whitelist went right? It's on the *names server* server.
Me: *checks if guy is calling from an authorized number* - nope.
Me: I'm sorry but you're not calling from an authorized number so I can't check that for you!
Guy: no you don't understand. I don't want any of this not-authorized bullshit, I just want a solution for this right now.
Me: and I just want you to call from an authorized number.
Yeah, I actually said that. He wasn't very happy 😅
I'm still employed by the way 🤣12 -
Guy called in because he wanted to get an IP white listed on a server. He wasn't authorized so i told him to send an email from an authorized email address.
He didn't like that very much and asked if another engineer was available (he talked to him more often so he thought that engineer would just do it. We need those kind of requests by email.)
Walked over to my colleague and explained what that client asked for.
'let him send an email!'
Told him i ready told the client that but that the client wanted to talk to him instead.
'sure, connect him through and then come back so you can hear him after i ask him to mail us!'
Connected him through. Client explained the situation.
Then he says with the sweetest voice and a 'get rekt' face: 'could you send me an email about that? 😊'
Let's just say that the client sounded everything but happy xD3 -
EDIT: devRant April Fools joke (2019)
-------------------------
Hey everyone!
Today, @trogus and I are very happy to announce a devRant feature that we’ve been working on for many months. After extensive time and money investment, it’s finally here! Introducing, pixelated avatars!
@trogus came up with this awesome idea about a year ago, but we couldn’t get it just right so we had to tons of work/research to make those pixelated avatars give the full sense of retro and ULTIMATE pixelation. We think everyone will appreciate how this effort turned out.
Anyway, let us know what you think, and we hope you enjoy!
p.s. here is @trogus’s avatar - the model we used to make sure the feature is perfect!51 -
Hey everyone,
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates, happy holidays to everyone, and happy almost-new-year!
We had a bit of a slow year in terms of devRant updates, but we gained some momentum towards the end of the year and we're looking forward to carrying it into 2020. Recently, we launched what I think are our coolest new avatar items yet (https://devrant.com/rants/2322869/...) and behind the scenes we got our iOS/Android apps on the latest version of the frameworks we use, which will help us continue to improve stability. Still, we definitely would have liked to do more, but we're optimistic the coming year will bring great things for devRant.
One thing we are very proud of is this year we had our best year ever in terms of platform stability and uptime. Despite the platform growing and our userbase growing, we had almost no complete app downtime even though our infrastructure is minimal. A large part of this is thanks to devRant++ supporters, who allow us to maintain a small but effective tier of infrastructure and redundancy.
In the coming year, we're going to launch one of our most ambitious initiatives yet, and we're also going to continue to improve the devRant experience itself. We want to try to gather more user feedback, so we'll be working on a way to do that too. Stay tuned, more on this stuff coming soon.
As always, thank you everyone, and thanks for your amazing contributions to the devRant community! And thank you to our awesome devRant++ supporters for continuing to be the main drivers to keeping devRant up and running.
Looking forward to 2020,
- David and Tim28 -

Co-worker has been sick for two days now (the guy that mainly helps me).
This has forced me to do nearly every ticket myself without asking questions.
It's going really great! I'm very happy about it tbh 😊7 -
Client: "Happy New Year 2018! Wish you a very successful and productive happy new year :)"
Me: "Oh Thank you! I wish you...."
Client: "Any update on the feature I have requested?"
Me: "Ah yes. I would love you give you an update. By the way, Happy n...."
Client: "Do you think the it can be released before midnight?"
I stopped replying. Fuck everyone and everything.
Happy New Year to everyone here.3 -
Root interviews for a job
So I've been interviewing for fun lately (and for practice), and it's been going mostly well. This one company in particular looks interesting, and they seem to really like me. This morning was interview #4 with them; tomorrow morning is #5.
The previous interviews were pretty enjoyable, especially the last one where I interviewed with one of the senior devs who gave me his "grumpy old man rails quiz." He actually asked some questions I wasn't able to answer! (Mostly dealing with Rails' internals.) Also when showing me the codebase, there were a few things I hadn't seen before, so it's exciting that I'll actually be able to learn something if I sign on. We ended up talking for almost an hour past our allotted time, and we got along famously. He said he was very surprised I did so well on his quiz because most people don't. Everyone else I interviewed with so far has liked me and gave positive reviews, too.
I don't know if I want the job, but that's beyond the scope of this rant anyway. The real reason for this comes next.
My interview today was with the VP of engineering. It was more of a monologue, as he wanted to give me perspective to see if I actually wanted to work there, but it was still very much a monologue. He's an old white guy who seems to loves to drone, and he never seemed very happy when I responded, so I let him drone and drone. Good information though.
But he's very set in his ways in some regards, and two of them were pretty insulting. We never really talked about technicals, and he just assumed that since I wasn't old and graying that I was a junior dev. He said, and I'll quote: "We run a lean but senior team, so we typically only hire senior devs here. But the dev team is all old white men. There's no diversity in talent, age, sex, race, religion, etc, and I'm looking to change that." He made several more allusions to my more junior level, too. He made a lot of assumptions (like how I'm not comfortable with structure because I've been the only dev so often) and got annoyed when I countered them.
I realize he has no idea of my skill level -- even though he should if he was listening to his team -- but to just assume that I'm not talented because I'm young, and bloody hire me just because I'm female? I don't want to be your diversity hire, old man. 🤬
So I'm feeling angry.
I might still take the job because the it offers considerable benefits over where I'm working (despite being quite happy here), but it will absolutely be despite him.rant i don't want to leave my job sexism but i want to leave the desert and the two are married ageism am i really going to tag this ageism? guess so 🙁 diversity hire interview31 -
So I moved from being the TL of a small team to a member of another team a month ago.
A dev from the old team sent me this today morning. He also sent some examples of what he found "cool", and tbh I'm pretty proud of those modules. I tried being very modest there, but I'm very happy 😅8 -

A few years back, when my youngest cousin was about 7 years old, she asked me the most innocent question ever.
She said, "what's the internet?"
I answered, "it is where you can find anything that came from other people".
"Wanna see baby tigers?" I added then she nodded.
I Google searched 'tiger cubs' and showed the image results to her. She beamed a very big smile and said "let's look for another one!" So we did search for a few animal photos and I saw how happy she was!
Now she's a gamer who loves minecraft, Pewdiepie, and FPS games! :)9 -

Who here uses `master` for development?
My boss (api guy) tried to convince me that was normal practice. I gently told him that it sounded crazy and very very bad.
Here's the dev path I'm enforcing on my repos:
(feature branches) -> dev -> qa* -> master -> production*
*: the build server auto-pulls from these branches, and pushes any passing builds to staging/production.
Everyone works on their own feature branches, and when they're happy with their work, they merge it into `dev`. `dev`, therefore, is for feature integration testing. After everything is working well on `dev`, it gets merged into `qa` for the testers to fawn over and beat with sticks. Anything that passes QA gets merged into `master`, where it sits until we're ready to release it. When that time comes (it's usually right away, but not always), `master` gets merged into `production`.
This way, `master` is always stable and contains the newest code, so it's perfect for forking/etc. Is this standard practice, or should I be doing something different?
Also, api guy encourages something he calls "running a racetrack" -- each dev has their own branch (their initials) and they push to that throughout the day. everyone else pulls from it regularly and pushes to their own branch. When anyone's happy with their code, they push from their (updated) branch to `qa` (I insisted on `dev` instead.)
Supposedly this drastically reduces the number of merge conflicts when pushing to an upstream branch due to having a more recent ancestor node?
I don't quite follow that, but it seems to me that merging/pushing throughout the day would just make them happen sooner? idk.
What are your thoughts?30 -
Always wanted to build a URL shortener. Guess what I'm building right now :D (next to working on a blog article)
Somehow this is making me very happy 😊18 -
Life with Windows 10:
An absolute nightmare. My oven doesn't work, Washing machine started rattling, toaster toasted more than it was supposed to toast. Every time windows updates it restarts my TV in my living room.
Then I met my neighbour. He lives a very happy life. I always wanted to know his secret ingredients.
One day I invited him to my house and he saw my Windows machine. He immediately insisted that I install Linux so that I can be happy and cool like him.
And that's the day my life changed. My oven started to bake beautifully, my washing machine was spinning at full speed.
Linux changed my life. I'm now part of the cool kids. Everyone loves me, embraces me.
Is your life hard? Are you not being noticed by other cool boys/girls? Are you having pain in your back? Remember:
Whatever bad happens, it's Windows 10's fault.8 -
When I was studying OOP our teacher instructed us to submit a project at the end of semester. Me and my friend worked hard and enthusiastically and finished our first game in C++ (Ping Pong). We were very excited because we had put so much effort into it that we were 100% sure that our project will be the best among all. At the end of semester, turned out our teacher does not have much time to evaluate our projects, so instead he announced a motherfucking MCQ's quiz. Everyone got really really happy but I was thinking of multiple ways I could kill that bastard.2

The guy who reported a serious exploit in the company's system got arrested this morning. Safe to say the Hungarian public isn't very happy. I took the screenshot 5 minutes ago, it went up to 3.1k since then 😂8

Interesting thing I did yesterday:
This is a program which loops over every word in the wamerican word database and checks if the username is available on the Mojang servers, thus, this is a Minecraft OG username finder, and it works beautifully.
I'm checking 72,000 words, the only thing is I can only check one per second, so the entire process takes about 20 hours. Any usernames which are available are sent into a text file for later viewing, and it remembers which word it looked at last if you can't have your computer on for 20 hours straight.
Very happy! Found quite a few good names so far!14 -
Finally, fucking finally, after twenty fucking trillion tries, a huge ass import is going steady and fast.
I'm literally, out loud, encouraging the import process 😅
"Yesyesyes keeeep it going!"
"You can do this!!"
"You're doing very well!"
I feel like a fucking retard but I'm so happy its finally starting to work 😅9 -
I'm not sure if this counts as a rant, but I'll proceed anyway.
So it's been very long since I've used AngularJS and recently I had to use it for some new project. I had to pass data across the states without showing it in the URL. Remembering solving that that thing before, I straight away Googled and got a Stackoverflow question with accepted answered. Delighted, I've gone through it and realising that I didn't up vote that answer, clicked on the up vote button. But as it turns out, I CANNOT up vote it. Not because I didn't have enough reputation, but because it was MY OWN ANSWER!
I'm not sure if I should be happy or sad :/:/:/8 -
This is my first IoT project. It's pretty simple, but I've been very happy with the results thus far.
About this time last year, someone got into our garage and rifled through my wife's car.
I have a camera in my garage, and a Phillips Hue motion detector. Using the Hue's excellent API, I have a perl script that checks for motion every couple of seconds, and starts capturing from the camera via RTSP if it does. That video is then staged, ready to be uploaded to a digital ocean droplet if I click on a link in the mailgun-powered email that's then sent to me and my wife, along with a preview GIF of the video, created through the same ffmpeg process that pulled the capture from the camera.
Here you can see me getting home from work.20 -
How stackoverflow works(for me):
- First some guru will downvote it & someone comments saying it is duplicate/easy/stupid/should be somewhere else.
- Then a very generous person comes in, says its a valid question, answers & upvotes it.
- After few hours/days, other people come looking for the same question & then they upvote it.
This is called a true happy ending.4 -
A lite story about how i was hired at 16 years old.
Me at 11. Modifying HTML templates to create a sign up page for a game. Me at 14. Created some worthless websites in the past (at a training), barely knowing the structure of HTML.
Me at 15. Made my first website for a customer (using WordPress for the first time, didn't know how to use it before). The website was selling apartments, it was looking very good and went on the first place on SEO. Got my first money (100E).
Me at 16. Made some other WordPress websites for other customers (one of them still haven't paid, the website was made way back in 2015), so i shut down the website and replaced it with a text saying "This website is currently down until the customers pays the developer".
Me still at 16. A friend of my mom sent my CV to multiple companies, to work as a intern to learn more, and one of them accepted me for a interview (a well known and one of the best company with 30~ people)
Went to the interview, asked me about what i realized, what i can do, about my knowledges in others languages etc (forgot to mention that i love the computers from young age, so i was very good in them, specially at the age of 11), so they were happy about it and asked called me for another interview with the boss. Went to it, the boss asked me some tricky questions, i answered them immediately, he was very surprised about my knowledge at that age and accepted me immediately. After working for 2 weeks, instead of hiring me as a intern for 4-6 months, they instead hired me as a normal person, as a front end developer, for an undefined date, making 250 E / Month (6 hours per day in summer)
Now, I'm in the 11 grade, working for them about 9 months, making 315 E / Month, working for 4 hours per day after school, the place is cool, my entire team (family) is very funny and very cool, and they asked me many times to help them with different problems they had and i fixed them immediately (they really didn't know some stuff which i knew). Worked on big projects and worked on some from scratch by myself and they were very happy about how it went.
TLDR: was talented in computers (software), I'm a fast learner, barely knew about making websites, hired as a front end developer at 16 yr.
Btw, I'm in love with DevRant, I'm feeling like home everytime i visit this community :').
P.S. Sorry for my bad English and the mistakes i made.
alert("Thanks for reading my first rant!");10 -
Look Who's happy! Thanks for the sticker @dfox and @trogus it came right when we celebrate our Anniversary. It is a very great Present from you.4

Hey guys :(
The rant will be long.
Today was one of the worst day ever.
I'm feeling so shitty right now.
I'm 19 and I started my apprenticeship about a half year ago on a very small company.
From day one I had many things to do, every day is hard and a new experience. But I'm learning a lot.
Two months ago I had my very first presentation for a client. I was really excited and nervous but everything was fine and the client as well as my boss were proud of me.
Today I should present again a prototype for the same client. But this time not directly personal, instead we did it via TeamViewer. After the client finally found out, how to open and start this shit, the disaster tooked its course.
After explaining him the conzept, I wanted to show him in the software. For some reason it suddenly stopped working. I've just made a change recently which leads in all appeareances to an error .
Because of that error I couldn't proceed, so I have to explain and show him the data I created before I made the changes.
With that everything Just worked fine, I could explain and visualize everything. It didn't Matter and didn't changed anything, only the Name was a Name from me.
The client was very relaxed about this error. He said that it is a prototype , it is not serious.
Furthermore I showed and demonstrated him everything.
But my boss wasn't very surprised and Happy about me. He made me responsable for the error, I should have prepared everything better and this all was Shit.
This made me really, really sad. It sounded so hard.
I know that I've made a mistake, but it's human. I'm only 19. I'm not perfect. Sure, I could have prevented it, if I had tested all possibilites right after I had made the changes again. I prepared the whole presentation on the weekend, on my personal freetime. I spent so often so much time in my freetime just for my job, for my apprenticeship. To get what? A fat bite, a kick in the ass. I'm doing so much, but this is not acknowledged. But when I make something wrong - then I'm the shittiest person.
Damn. Don't know how to handle this situation. This has gone to far today.
Yeah, I could have tested More, but I only tested the existing Data. I prepared the presentation very Well. This is so sad.11 -
This is to dfox and trogus. I think that a lot of devRanters are very happy with the support option! Although i hate Google pretty much i made a very unlikely exception for you because i would love to support the social network where i, next to being able to rant and be among fellow devs, met quite some very nice devs with whom i still am in touch with through slack and some encrypted channels. Thanks for this awesome place and I'm proud to be a supporter 😃7

Working really hard, finishing tasks, upgrading servers. Cancel some useless meetings to finish up features, working till 2am to get a database migration working. Half of the platform is transformed, both customers and team are very happy about their accomplishments.
Boss: "OK, I think we're on the right path with these changes, but productivity and morale is honestly disappointing. Are you guys sleeping enough? You all look very tired and unmotivated!"
Attend all meetings, call boss at 7am to discuss random purchases like a whiteboard, run around the office holding a (broken, lol) MacBook, looking very busy & slightly worried. I shout random things at people across the office like "Nice work Gary!" and "Damn, you are on a roll Angela!". I initiate smalltalk with department heads, only to immediately disrupt the conversation by checking my phone saying "Oh I really have to take this one" (empty battery, lol). No one writes a single line of code for four weeks, and nothing new has been deployed by the whole team.
Boss: "I think it's commendable how productive the team has become this month. You guys are all so active and involved. A real improvement!"6 -
My Girlfriend broke with me today.
We was in this relationship from two years now. we was doing very good, our relationship was not toxic, no fights, no bad words, zero problems.
One month ago she goes to travel with her evangelical aunt to the beach. Her aunt have lot of money she gets from scamming all that believers. I was happy for my ex-gf because here in out city she was having lot of problems of health, mainly because she was not very mind stable and that degraded her health.
When she goes, her physical and mental health improve a lot. i was happy she is stable now. Her aunt have some Church around the city they go, aunt started to bring her very often to the church. She started to strongly reinforce they God beliefs.
Of course im atheist, she know that from very long time ago. But of course when she started to be more devoted, feels dont fit with me. I refuse to change my mindset about that topic.
Today she says we must broke because im not a believer. This was the most painful experience in my life. I fall in cry for three hours. I truly love her. I recently wakeup and decide to write this rant. I dont have too much friends to talk apart from her. So i wish to share this here.
Im unemployed, she was my only support all this job hunting times. Now she was gone and im alone, this hurts a lot.
Im trying to dont fall deep af, to non return path.
Fuck religion. and her fanatic aunt.31 -

I wanted to screenshot some of the birthday wishes that were printed for me on the discord server early this morning but they're spread too much, thanks anyway! That was very cute of you all. Only people from devRant actually bothered to wish me a Happy Birthday this early (maybe I influenced it a little bit ... 😂) But it's true
Everyone remember that ThatDude's Birthday is on January 28th 😉16 -
Just finished installing Deepin OS on my old laptop as an attempt to get familiar with linux (coming from win10). It looks gorgeous, I got at least four orgasms from the installation process alone. And it comes with lots of cool apps preinstalled (Chrome, Spotify, Steam, etc). So far I'm very happy with it.30

I got an email a couple days ago about a tweet a made about how web developers are unanimously very happy that Microsoft is dropping IE. I got a very angry email from someone who really loved Internet Explorer, apparently 🤔, saying that my tweet was, and I quote "offensive to those who used it loyally for years". That was hysterical for me to read.14

I don't know a lot of people in other market segments who have zero fear of losing their job. Since I discovered that my coding skills are marketable, I have not lost a night of sleep over job security.
I'm very happy with my current job, but the privilege of rarely having to feel uncertain about income is incredibly liberating.4 -
Finished an MVP of my garage-opener-thingamajig!
Basically I decided I wanted to control my garage from my app. Retail solutions are expensive af. As a dev, the choice was easy!
RPI3
HC-SR04 sensor
DHT temperature sensor
5v Relay
Nativescript + Angular
Firebase
Result: i can open my garage anywhere, safely (sorta?) via firebase, and get push notifs when it gets opened (from hcsr04), which triggers the pi camera, while also getting live temp feeds (this one is kinda for the giggles and utterly pointless but NUMBERZ!)
Anyway - fun side project! First version of my app looks like this. Its very rough, and I have a couple more details I wanna display, but for a first time app I'm happy!10 -
So my first job is also my current one. I am a computer science student and for my course we had to do a project for an actual client. The client was a consultancy company and after working my ass off, their software development partner decided to hire me and a classmate.
The company is pretty small (we are now with the 6 of us) and the general attitude is very nice. I've only been working there for a few weeks and I feel very welcome. The work isn't too hard (mainly web development with geographic features/data).
In rough lines the stack always consists of a Java Rest API and an Angular frontend that retrieved the data from the API.
So far I have learned a ton and I am really happy that I have this opportunity. Lunch is provided and we always eat together, we crack jokes, have fun, play games in the break. Coffee machine next to my desk. I'd love to work here all my life :d
Since I'm still in school I can't go to the office every day. Instead I am at the office every Monday and on other days I try to work from school or home.2 -
So a consulting company was hired to write stored procedures for us. I don't know where they found these guys, but the code was horrible and took ages to run.
We other devs weren't happy at all, but management forbade us to rewrite the code, cause the consultants would've gotten money for nothing then. As a "fix", these guys just reduced batch sizes to a very low amount of rows and management was happy that the procedures were so much faster now and gave their ok.
Fast forward a few weeks (to now). Obviously a reduced batch size means the procedures will run faster, but more often and it will take weeks to load all the data we need.
Result: Management ordered us to rewrite the SPs and we're all torn between laughing and crying.4 -
HELL. YES.
I wrote a complex grid rendering system in c++!
It accepts pixel values and * values (Grid values)
Works very similar to WPF grid, which I LOVE.
The few lines of code needed (On the front end, at least) to do this are in the comments. VERY FUCKING HAPPY RIGHT NOW.13 -
Conversation with Boss about a new project.
[Me]: We have to program an API and preferably our own backend, so that all the wishes of the customer are covered. In addition, there will also be an app later, as the customer has requested
[Boss]: Why should we program everything from scratch?
[Me]: We do not have to program everything from scratch, we can already use some existing stuff, or even use frameworks etc. But the project is so complex that such a path must be taken.
[Boss]: Hmm, ok.
... some time later ...
boss comes to me.
[Boss]: (shines and is very happy) I have the perfect solution! We simply use Shopware and finish the project as soon as possible.
Are you fucking kidding me? I’ve never worked with Shopware, and the Backend looks like fucking Windows 98. He’s not even a Dev! So how can he judge it that way?
he does that every fucking time!!10 -
The following is written in Latin, German, and English, and is written in a custom script called "VuetendScriptor" aka "MadScript".
Translation as follows:
Hello devRant!
I am very happy to announce my new script "MadScript". I am so happy right now! I have wanted to do this for a long time! Thank you everyone for your help! I could not have done this without you!58 -
My manager is so cool at work that he doesn't care if I sleep during office hours or even skip working for a couple of days as long as I meet the deadlines. All he cares about is getting the work done and keeping his team happy.
I abso-frigging-lutely respect him very much and like him as a person.
Unlike my friends' managers in other departments, he wouldn't assign me more work if I finished a project before the deadline.
I wish all the managers in all the companies realise work-life balance is important and act like him.10 -
I like playing tf2.
I play every video game with max brightness on the lappy.
The problem is that when I alt tab back to anything else, eg chrome, I get dazzled and my eyes hurt.
I'm on linux and accidentally noticed that I can connect to the X server and do stuff.
So I'm listening for events with the PropertyChangeMask, and when the active window has the name "Team Fortress 2 - OpenGL", I run "light -S 100", otherwise I use what I already had.
Very happy with this hack, instant brightness changes on alt tab. -

Well dear former employer thank you for everything. Thanks for taking me on as a junior and not providing any training at all. Thanks for changing my job role without consulting me whilst I was on holiday and again failing to train me for a job I had no idea about, but you apparently needed me to do for you. And finally thank you for letting me work nearly a full shift before telling me how much you like me, don't have a bad word to say about me, and you're really happy with all my work but the company and I "aren't a very good fit for each other anymore".4

I am very happy that I found devRant. I work from home so ranting to other developers in person is impossible... thank you for filling that void.3

JavaScript Motherfucking Asynchronous Bullshit.
I get it, for quite some stuff, async is very, very useful. But why on fucking earth do so goddamn many functions NEED this (and those callback functions) and can't do without?!
If there would be good and nicely understandable await documentation that actually fucking works, I'd be so happy.
I've currently got .then after .then after motherfucking then and its irritating me to no end as it, in this context, shouldn't even be necessary. This thing I'm writing doesn't give a fuck if something takes a few milliseconds before the rest of the program can continue!!
Fuck asynchronous programming in JavaScript for goddamn everything.
(I do love JavaScript!)27 -
I need to make a confession about my terribly unprofessional project I made. Around two years ago I got thrown for the first time into back end development - I had to work on the project alone. As a very smart man I basically exposed our SMTP server as a nice and very flexible API.
Fortunately it was, by the design, a very short-lived project, taken down from the web completely and for good after around 2 months. I'm still happy I had more luck than brains and nobody used our server as a spam sending service in our name and I have learned a valuable and relatively cheap lesson in security this way.1 -
Not sure if I should be happy of I should cry.
...
I woke early today so I could directly start working on my little project to make some progress.
I was coding for ~10 hours.. The code worked fine for all testcases, except for one. I debugged for hours and I couldnt figure out what was wrong. I tried changing stuff in my code and it got more and more messy to the point where I couldn't even understand my own code anymore. I was so frustrated ...
> Deleted everything I made today.
> Rewrote the entire thing in one hour with a different, more structured approach.
> Worked perfectly for all cases, even the very complex ones.
1 day wasted....
Should I be happy that I came up with something decent in the end? I am still mad cause I wasted the entire day.. Why did I not directly went for the thing I did in the end ..? ._.8 -
My Father is an old bank accountant. So he knows that, behind their mainframe screens there are ugly code stuff and I deal with them.
When I try to talk about my job, Mother's eyes grow in awe. She thinks of me as a sci-fi character.
As my career goes very well, my wife thinks I'm so skillful that I must be like the architect guy at Matrix.
Mother-In-Law and Father-In-Law: A mix of my wife and mother.
They are all proud and happy, so am i.2 -
Goddamn I'm happy that I've put a €3 rubber case on my phone.. it just fell face down from 2 meters height, if it wasn't for that protection, I'd have a €630 paperweight by now 😰
Seems like these things can happen to the best of us (I'm generally very careful with my gadgets).. Today I leaned not to omit your smartphone's protection 😶11 -

Happy coding to all of you guys! My very best wishes for this 2018. May your code be free of bugs the whole year.
P.S. Fuck you testers (just kidding, we need you)4 -
I think I'm falling in love. With TDD.
I used to be very skeptic about it. You know, the usual reasons: it takes longer to deliver, constant "flow" interruptions, etc, etc. But ever since I've tried it I'm nothing but happy about my choice :)
I'm moving forward, I'm not making any regressions, I'm no longer afraid to make any changes in my code as I know tests will show what exactly I break,.. And most importanty, I have all use-cases with corner-cases defined and "explained" in the code... No more do I have to search in Confluence for how this exact scenario should behave. Everything is here. Everything's in the tests.
It's amazing!
Yeah, it DOES take longer to deliver so if you're hardcore Agile living by "Ship it as soon as it compiles" TDD might be too slow. But if you prefer knowing when your code is covering all the use cases w/o any errors -- TDD is the way.12 -
Node.JS is great sometimes. Here is my HTTP(s) server script, which is 117 generously spaced lines, including a small database of MIMEs, which serves raw files OR allows you to set up request handlers like the one you see here.
Very, super happy with the outcome.4 -
I was working at a mid size software company as an intern. Initially I wasn't going to get paid as it was organised through Uni. But then after some discussions with HR, they had agreed to pay me (sweet!). After 6 months of interning (and being paid) I talked with the CEO and he offered me a full time job after Uni. "We'll pay you now" he joked. I told him that the company was already paying me and I was very happy. "Well that's a mistake. You'll have to pay that back" So he wrote up a contract where I would work for them, but my salary would be reduced $15k over the year as "payment".
On that day I was pretty pissed, and I got an email from my current employer saying they were looking for grads. I applied and got the job! I ran away from my old job. I sent one email asking them if they wanted the money (as I wanted to be honest), but they didn't respond. I didn't try again and have kept the money, and am very happy at my current job!2 -
Today, for the first time in my life I quit my job
I feel very happy (refer to any of my older rants), yet i also feel very sad because in spite of all the quirks, it’s a great place to work with super nice people whom I feel like have become a big part of my life in such a small period of time
I very much doubt I’ll ever find a company like this again with such a relaxing atmosphere but I have to think about myself and my career ..
I’m especially incredibly sad about leaving one of my colleagues as he has become one of my best friends these past few months..
Let’s just hope I made the right decision ..8 -
I asked for last minute day off tomorrow. And was told yes (probably very begrudgingly). I'm so happy that I don't know if these tears are from a breakdown or happiness...11

So I had to buy a laptop
I had a Lenovo G50-70 (2014) it was really good, mid-range i5, 6GB of RAM and to speed it up I've installed an SSD. 3 years (and some formatting) later it started being slow, I couldn't even play Minecraft anymore (and the battery was dying)
This year we're learning and using PCs for the first (real) time, so I needed a good laptop.
I started searching everywhere, Google, shops, Amazon... (Excluding HP and Acers for good reasons 😂) so I've found this Asus, which isn't really famous, but the model is UX510UX.
FHD display, Nvidia 950M, i7-7500U, really good battery, 8GB of RAM, 1TB of hard disk
I bought an additional 128GB M.2 SSD from WD (I'm sorry but I can't live with a HDD 😂)
All of this for ~700€
I'm very happy for the purchase, the laptop is all metal (pinky bronze, but I like it)
It's really powerful, I can play GTA with mid-high details without any lag. (Remember, I play GTA on the desktop with a 1080 Ti so my standards are high)
I'm happy 😄!22 -
As a follow-up to my comment on this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1029538 I want to share with you my new project: BinToBmp!
It converts any file into a beautiful bitmap image illustrating all bytes as pixels. Each byte indicates an index to a color table (very happy bitmap makes it this simple).
Useful? No. Fun to make? Hell yeah!
Take a look at it on my github page:
https://github.com/Forside/BinToBmp
Download:
https://github.com/Forside/...
Print your favorite song and hang it on the wall or make a shirt from your latest compiled application. So many possibilities!
More infos in the readme.
Updates coming soon :)
P.S.: The image displays the converted jar.30 -
Greatest lesson I learned from myself. Work for yourself. Create your own business while you are working. Be your own boss. Don't rely in employment alone.
I got laid off today. My boss business is a digital agency. Our client stopped working with several agencies including us because of an order from their mother company to only use 1 agency. My boss has no choice but to let me go.
Even if you got the skills and you're doing good in your work, these things can happen. It is beyond our control. I like my company and my boss but reality hits hard. I thought I will be with this company for a very very long time. I want to settle here and build my business but still work together with my boss. I have so many plans that instantly disappeared.
Oh well just be strong and move on. Happy job hunting to me again. Maybe this is God's plan to teach me some things. For me to create my own business seriously while working.5 -
I remember making a product for my customer that was using a db
When I tested the product before showing it to the client, everything was good and fast and clean.
When I gave it to my customer, he was very happy, after few days he emails me about the product was very slow, I checked the database and it had a lot of *testing* shit made by him and when I asked my customer why the db has so much useless things he told me that he was learning how to it. I had no words, can't you just create a database MongoDB, MySQL or whatever you want to learn locally and play with it? Then he emails me later about a fucking refund because HE fucked up with the permissions of the db5 -
My family is very supportive. My 2 aunts are working in technical fields, and at least 2 of my cousins are working in IT and one cousin is studying CS too. My dad works in IT and since I started my studies he always talks to me about his work, when he finds errors and bugs and rants about his colleagues :D He also helped me debug some code. My mom is supportive too, but sometimes when I mention to her that this and that is hard she goes: "Oh, what did you choose?" (Rhetorical question)
But all in all I'm happy. Reactions of "outsiders" are those which bother me sometimes. But that's a different story.2 -
And already, I have completed my New Year's resolution! (SPEED RUN!)
I've just published my first completed project!
https://algorythm-dylan.github.io/t...
It allows you to make advanced cross-platform console applications. It's cross-platform curses, basically.
I spent quite a lot of time on the docs, so you can read all about it there. There's still a lot of stuff to do, but the very foundation is there, and it's everything you need(ish). It can just be a little inconvenient at times without helper functions for drawing, or adding strings, and such.
I'm currently binding it to Lua, which is going to be super fun to use!
Happy with this first version5 -
Lots of oof in one image.
I like how they had the audacity to say (and I fucking quote): "this is good news!"
I don't like to complain about sites generating revenue. I understand it is important and I even feel morally obligated not to use an adblocker. But all I will say is that the site has sustained itself for a very long time without the use of poor-quality and unrelated ads, and this feels like a lot more of a money grab than something the site actually requires.
Anyways, happy to see a -400 score on it. And I guess I can't wait to get Amazon ads on SO.6 -
We're currently designing the ALU of a CPU at the university. After that we will design the registers and combine them all together.
It is like the awakening of a child inside of me. I have tried to understand how computers work in its very details.
That was too complex to me, but I believed that I can and will understand it when I start from somewhere in that field. That lead me to learn HTML and CSS when I was 6 to 8 (idk it has been too many years).
I'm really indescribably fascinated, motivated and happy.6 -
More than a year ago, frustrated by a sub par experience of linux on my laptop (drivers), I planned to buy a MacBook to get a stable Unix platform.
But it was too expensive.
I convinced myself that it will pay for itself.
And today my app, i created on this laptop, has finally paid for it. :D
I am very happy.7 -

life as devs in tough companies, high expectation and shit.2 -
Thank you VERY MUCH for wasting my life, ruining my new career and destroying my family. It hasn't been 24 hours from joining devRant and I am already addicted. Checking my phone every 5 minutes or so. Is this some kind of a conspiracy to wipe out weak and liable to procrastination devs? To suck them/me to a big, colorful fluffy garden of instant gratification?
Are you HAPPY!!!???3 -
so I had a very important video conference for some rather large cloud infrastructure that Im engineering. I decide to look "smart" so i decided to wear a jersey during the video call. I aced the meeting, happy people all round. I walk to my room and my wife says "you do know your jersey is inside out...and back to front..and the label is sticking out from under your chin....How did the meeting go?" me:"..fine until you pointed out a look like a 2 year old dressed me !" ... well thats one way to kill the happy feels!3

Shit went very well - I am really happy for my future
Hopefully, the bureaucracy will be faster for me :P
Details? Not yet5 -
Tldr; its a long introduction
Hi Ranters,
I've been on this app for quite a while now. As a shy cat watching from a distance and reading all kinds of rants. Anywho I feel comfortable enough to crawl out of my shell and introduce myself. Since I feel you guys together made such a pleasant and safe community, I'm really happy to be a part of it!
Anyway I'm Sam, 24 year old, from the Netherlands. My favorite color is green. Mostly the green you can find in nature. The one that calms you down:). I'm a very introverted person but always very curious and eager to learn new things.
I started to program when I was 12. I did assembly and C++. Because I liked making cheats for online games. Later I learned about C#, Java and Python. Mostly used it for web stuff, scraping, services etc. But also chatbots (for Skype for example).
Currently I'm 2 years in as a data scientist, mostly working in Python.
But on the side as a hobby and with an ambition I have a basic understanding of full stack development.
Mostly Nodejs, express, mongo, and frontend, no frameworks.
(I will later ask you guys some more questions about that! I could really use some advice!)
Anyway enough about me! Tell a bit about yourselves! Happy to get to know you all a little better!22 -
I'm no longer happy at my current company. I'm deciding to resign once I get another job. Very badly looking for another job.7
-
I have some good, no, great news I forgot to share yesterday:
Drum roll 🥁🥁🥁🥁
I just got my first job as an intern!!!
I'll be developing their product from scratch along with a few other devs, it's gonna be awesome. My primary occupation will be as a backend dev, but I'm also gonna help a bit on the frontend.
They also said they won't micro manage me, they just want me to deliver their tasks, so I can work whenever I want and not necessarily 6 hours a day. I'm a bit skeptical here because that sounds like they're gonna overwork me, but they also said they don't want to get in the way of my studies in college, so idk. It seems like a really nice place.
It's going to be remote work and the pay is also very good for an internship.
All of it seems way too good to be true, there has to be a catch... I'll find out in time, just let me be happy for getting my first actual job ever ok? Just for a few days.
Anyways, I'm just so fucking happy with this and wanted to share it with ya :)7 -
(From a previous rant I made)
As a note to all of my brothers from India. I am not happy with the current state in which your country is in regards to this bothersome pandemic. I do not feel happy, I am not jumping around singing to the doom you are all facing. I am sad. I know your people are good and your engineers outstanding.
Were it for me you would all be here in the U.S with me chilling with some good bourbon in celebration to how strong you can make our tech be.
My previous post was in regards to scammers, and I am very well aware that you are not at fault.
Be strong brothers, you will all survive this, just as India has survived generations of struggles.5 -
Once i was travelling by train from Mumbai to Delhi!
When the train started, I was traveling alone in the AC-I coupe.
Some time later, a Beautiful lady came and sat in the opposite berth!
I was pleasantly Happy
The lady kept smiling at me...
This made me even more Happy☺️
Then she went and sat next to me....
I was bubbling with Joy
She then leant towards me and whispered in my ear...
*"Hand over all your cash, cards and mobile phone to me , else I will shout loudly and tell everybody that you are harassing and misbehaving with me" *
I stared blankly at her
I took out a paper and a pen from my bag and wrote " I am sorry, I can not hear or speak... Please write on this paper whatever you want to say"
The lady wrote everything what she said earlier and gave it to me!
I took her note, kept it nicely in my pocket...
I got up and told her in clear tones..."
*Now shout & scream !!*
Moral of the story : *DOCUMENTATION IS VERY IMPORTANT*1 -
Hi from Guatemala! I am new to devRant, now it's a must read every day, so much fun! I just landed my first job and I am very nervous/happy. My part of the job is to make the frontend using Flutter, I have some experience on Android but I feel it's very different. Lets see how it goes!11

I was very hardworking (at least more hardworking than now)
But recently I've became very lazy , VERY LAZY !
I'm not happy abot that at all.
Any suggestion that'll help ?8 -
A vendor gave us what is turning out to be a very stable storage appliance/software, so we're happy for that. But even so, disks fail. So we need an automated way to identify, troubleshoot, isolate, and begin ticketing against disk failures. Vendor promised us a nice REST API. That was six months ago. The temporary process of SSHing(as root) to every single appliance(60-200 per site, dozens of sites) to run vendor storage audit commands remains our go-to means of automation.6
-
I finished a big refactoring. It makes me feel so good to delete all those lines of code. Even though I have a decided to leave this company in the near future, I am very happy that I leave the code in a better shape. Somebody who is replacing me doesn't have to go through shit anymore.3
-
I miss when my job was just about coding, I could spend entire workdays writing C# or TypeScript while listening rock or metal with few meetings in between, being very passionate in programming and computers sometimes I found was I doing so engaging which I spent more than my 8 hours workday on company's code base trying to improve it and my older coworkers were very happy with my code.
Then a "promotion" happened, I went to work directly with a client, a huge enterprise which is working on renovating his internal software and here the fun stopped. Long useless meetings are a regular occurrence, there are absurdly long procedures to do everything (for example since CI/CD is leaky we have to do dozens of workaround to get a microservice deployed) and having very little written documentation this gives an huge advantage to people which actually enjoy to spend their entire workdays on a MS Teams call over "lone programmers" like me which actually feel significant fatigue in doing that (alone sometimes I was able to log 12+ hours of programming daily between work and personal projects while after 3 hours of PP I feel drained) since the information passes in meetings/pair programming and I dread both.
I feel which my passion is still there, I still enjoy coding, tinkering with Linux and BSD, broadening my knowledge with technical books and having passionate conversation about tech but I dread my job, sometimes I try to look at it under a more optimistic eyes but most of the times I just end disappointed.3 -
So...the windows console is getting emoji support. I can't convey how happy it makes me that this is what they've been working on. Very happy. Because of little smiling pictures of yellow people in a command line.4

Messed Up my first Coding Interview and that too of Google!
My first rant.
The first question was not an easy one. I cracked it though. Happy. Very Happy! I had 40 minutes left for the second question. And then came the nightmare. Okay, my foolishness.
I compiled my code. Compilation error.
Declared variables. Compilation Error!
Imported Libraries. Compilation Error!
Changed vector to an array. compilation Error!
Checked the loop for edge cases. Compilation Error!
Cannot use an IDE too. Tab's change is not allowed.
My score was still ZERO and I had only 15 minutes left.
Then lazily my eyes went to the language selected. It was C. I wrote the code in C++.
I mean HOW CAN I BE SOOOO STUPID??
I was coding in an entirely different language!
But..But, the story doesn't end here.
Next, I copied the code and switched languages. NOOO, my code was lost. I couldn't paste my code!!
I checked the timer- 5 minutes left.
Somehow, I managed to rewrite the code. And submitted it at the last minute.
I have no idea what will be the results. I just solved 1/2 questions.
SAD but FRUSTRATED at my stupidity :(5 -
It's rant time!
So, as a broke electrical engineering student, I got this job in a local company. They used JSF and my skills in java were, at the very least, small (former PHP developer). But as a self taught developer this didn't stopped me and I went full on java learning (very bad year for my EE studies).
I became the 'guy in charge' for several of their projects (yeah, they did exploited broke students, I realized this far too late). I was very proud of myself, I worked hard, showed my true value, and they became impressed.
One nice thursday night, my "handler" emailed me with a urgent request. They needed an entire jsf application done by monday and the requirements were fairly complex.
Oh boy, I had a total of 10h of sleep from thursday to monday. I didn't even slept before going to my monday class, but I delivered the system. Got an pat in the back... "you're awesome"... I was happy.
6 months later: I received an email asking to fix a bug in the system. No problem with that. Oddly, this bug was a MAJOR bug. There's no way the system worked properly for six months with it. I fixed it in no time and commited the changes.
Turns out that this was the first time the system was going to be deployed. They made me go in an insane weekend dev project, and didn't even used the system for SIX MONTHS!!! I started to work my way out the company after this, aiming to open my own software company.
I still remember some other rants from the time I worked there. But these are for later.
Nice week for you all, may the sprint go gently and the clients be kind.1 -
Finally, finally, finally! My very first app with React Native is up and running. I know the hard part comes now, but I'm so incredibly happy, considering that I didn't even think I would start developing an app until two weeks ago, let alone learning React...6
-
So, my crush told me how she lost her 800+ bookmarks related to her very crucial project (She isn't into computers). I told her she could recover them and I'll help her with the steps. She was so paranoid about losing the rest of the project if something were to go wrong while recovering.
Bookmarks got recovered. She's happy.( I just took the bookmarks.bak file from the chrome folder and converted it to an html doc.)
4 days later-
Her: dude, what the fuck did you do. The whole system has been reset. The whole project is gone. Fucking know-it-all. She thinks I'm responsible for the system restore.

She's going to HATE me for life 😭. What did i ever do to you, you Microsoft Developers 😔. Why you do this.29 -
Look Who's happy! Thank you for the sticker @dfox and @trogus it came right when we celebrate our Anniversary. It is a very great Present from you1

I feel like resigning from a company that i joined 3 weeks back.
I don't like to code in PHP and the manager wants to stick on to that , no new developers joining the company and php is one of the reason. The code is a mess. Every now and then some other team come running for a change like one button to do some shit and then for a fix after 15mins of release.
So many database operations are happening manually. No innovation in the team. Developers are very boring , women being senior developers and team leads brings stability but there is no innovation , excitement or any enthusiasm. All my team members are very happy doing mediocre shit. Manager talks about agile development and they are following that at a level where every half a day some requirement changes.
I m tired of being a developer that fixes the same mediocre shit.
Its too boring.6 -
So those of you who have seen some of my previous rants will know that the past 2 years, I've been "employementally" challenged. I am now very happy to report that I've gotten a contract renewal at my current job. The terms are exactly the same but 3 extra days of anual leave and a 7% raise!1

My first rant. Very Happy to have people guiding newbies.
Starting with block chain (dapps) wish me luck. Any tips for beginners please let me know. 😀5 -
So after @danacus commented here https://devrant.com/rants/1860006/... about a command called "tp" to teleport from one directory to another, I felt the urge to write myself such tool. This was one of my first pure bash projects and I'm happy to announce that it finally is finished! I really hate self-promotion but since I use this tool in every single bash session and find it very convenient, I decided to share it with y'all. I'd be super glad if you give me your opinion about it!

Got my wife a new Roku stick, which we needed and she was very excited about. She asked me to set it up. I said it might take a little while. She said she didn't mind.
Setup was easy and straightforward, but of course involved pairing the actual device with its remote. Then I had to create an account on the computer, since the previous device was her sister's.
It was at this point when she got mad, like really mad, that setting up a new device had to be "so complicated." Okay, first off, this is the happy path. Absolutely nothing went wrong, couldn't ask for better. Second, I told you it might take a little while, and it hasn't even been 5 minutes. This, I even asked you to make sure you wanted to do this now. And you're not even doing it, I am. Which I don't mind, but don't get mad at me that it's not literally magic.11 -
Very off topic but I had to vent somewhere.
My brother is a dick to everyone (except to people who can give him promotions) and especially to the family.
He bragged about being aggressive in his workplace for years to his peers and to people 'under' him.
Now he insulted the wrong person and got fired.
Is it bad that this made me happy, seeing justice served to him?3 -
Manager redesigned large parts of a website template that I have been working on.
now, this did not bother me one bit but I am pretty sure it has to do with the delivery of the message. She was so happy about the redesign and it really did look better. I could not find it in me heart to not comply and just be happy. Plus she always lets me come in super late :V and she really is pretty and very nice to us.
oh well.2 -
Currently creating a little 3D Soft Engine.
Very happy with my current state!
Here is a little demo:9 -

So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.
So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?
Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):
-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)
I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).32 -
Make. Fucking. Backups...
I had to find a MailChimp sync plugin for a webshop and thought I found a good one that synced one way (webshop to MailChimp).
I figured, meh, what could go wrong? So I installed it, ran it...and somehow lost around 4000 mailinglist receipients because they were not in the webshop.
Turns out it adds the registered users in the webshop, but also removes entries that are not! Needless to say, I had some explaining to do and was only able to recover about 3000 addresses from a previously sent campaign.
Customer was not happy, neither was my boss, very important lesson learned...1 -
Yay!
So I finally dual booted ubuntu 16 lts alongside w10 on a laptop with nvidia optimus.
As have next to 0 XP with linux systems almost every step needed extensive googling, but in the end I have
- cinnamon
- vs code
- git
- cloned my xmlRant repo that uses asp.net core 1.1.2
- built it sucessfully
- *bonus* figured out how to use remmina to connect rdp to workplaces win 2008 r2 gateway
Very happy ^___^2 -
I've made the json protocol. It's a protocol containing only json. No http or anything.
To parse an json object from a stream, you need a function that returns the length of the first object/array of all your received data. The result of that function is to get the right chunk of the json to deserialize.
For such function, json needs to be parsed, so I wrote that function in C to be used with my C server and Python client. I finally implemented a C function into python function that has a real benefit / use case. Else you had to validate but by bit by the python json parser and that's slow while streaming. Some messages are quite big.
Advantage of this protocol is that it's full duplex.
I'm very happy!36 -
Do you guys drop the S from your variable names? I am constantly in a dilemma as to what makes more sense.
For example a SQL Table:
Books
----------
BookID
BookName
....
---------
OR
Book
---------
BookID
BookName
.....
---------
Or even in a language like C# or JavaScript:
const BOOKS
var books
let books
or
const BOOK
var book
let book
Even if you have multiple items in that variable/table it seems very redundant to ever have the s.
What do you guys think? Any input appreciated!
Happy coding!24 -
A lot of larger companies seem to be a happy about forcing employees to change their password every three months or so. They do it for security measures so that it is more difficult to break through the system, however most people end up making the worst passwords.
Instead of forcing a very good password on them every year or two maybe, they all end up having passwords like: "Summer16", "Qwer1234", "London15".
I used to work for our national police, and this was the case there as well...7 -
Happy SysAdmin day to all the magnificent SysAdmins all over the world!

I think I like teaching.
Today I was helping out a friend with an algorithm for an assignment because he had no idea how to do it (we're on the second semester). You could see that we was completely lost, without a clue on what to do. So I showed him how to think about programming, how to figure out the problem and the solution before going to the code. I was so goddam happy when I saw he understood it. At the start I was guiding him heavily, but towards the end I'd just loosely describe what he had to do (and, of course, explain why) and he'd know how to do it. It just made me so fucking happy and so fucking proud of him, I was dancing on my chair, you guys have no idea. He went from 0 to 60 in 2 hours, I could teach him what the teacher couldn't.
I college I'm kinda explaining a lot of stuff (mostly programming and calculus) to my friends, even to classmates I don't know (I made a few friends this way) and I fucking love it. Seeing people completely lost, shining a light on them and seeing them fly, it's fucking awesome. Idk it's just very fulfilling.
Not sure I'd like all other responsibilities that come with being a teacher, but teaching in of itself is **g r e a t**, definitely a career path I'm considering.
Today was a good day :)14 -
If you have an employee engagement survey that reveals that employees are not happy, don't dismiss and mock the employees when presenting the results.
It might very well be that it actually does not improve the situation.3 -
Core library was giving serious blow out of execution speed as data file size increased.
Traced it back to a GetHashCode implementation that was giving too many collisions for unequal objects, so when used as the key in a hash table it was causing the lookup to fall back to checking Equals (much slower).
Improved the GetHashCode implementation, and also precalculated it on construction (they were immutable objects), and run time went to warp speed! Was very happy with that.
Obviously put in a thread sleep to help manage expectations with the boss/clients going forwards. Can’t give those sort of gains away in one go. Sets a dangerous precedent.1 -
Hey guys, Today I created my first action on google assistant an it got deployed. I'm very happy and also I got the mail for the shirt. With 2 months I'll get it. I'm trying to make the action run in English and Hindi (Nation language of India) so that I can earn google home.6

I have a discord server where I'm writing the bot. I'm making games, utilities and other activities.
It's a very small server because I have not been actively recruiting players, but if you would like to join, here is the link. I would be happy to make some devRant commands and integrations.
https://discord.gg/sEnwGdjB
Right now, we have Blackjack, connect 4, crossword, and trivia. There's also a "stock market" where you buy shares of other players (rather than stocks).
It's early. There's some stuff to do but I'll admit, not a ton just yet. Maybe a few bugs, testing team is considerably small. But it is good fun and I am actively working on it. Maybe join and play while you're "working" from home :)7 -
My employer is a good person. He is very money-minded, but since he is a very good person, that's not the only thing in his mind.
I'm happy to work here ☺️3 -
Really regretted to born in India. I know I should not say bad about the country in which I born and living it but there are so many reasons.
Govt of India is very poor. Nothing can be processed if you don't have offered bribe or you don't have political power and pressure.
My company offering me onsite to go London for my project, govt is not issuing me PCC Police Clearance Certificate even I never had any crime.
Police says for your current address 6 month is duration you're living here so we submitted 6 months crime is nil and 4.5 years is more required.
I went to passport office and happy to submit all documentation for previous addresses so that police verification can be done but no body is taking documents
No progress in my file.
I'm too much frustrated now.
I reported to ministry and prime minister of India but even no progress.
I'm really fed-up.

Great week, been super productive and very happy about.
*wild junior boss appears*
"You should have done it differently! You didn't know it and it's your fault for not asking me about stuff you didn't know existet. I often screw things up and blame others, but i made the boss like me so it's okay. And since i lost my spine some time ago, i will now go suck my own dick and feel awesome . "
Not sure that is exactly what he said, but he meant it. -
On Friday. Client and Project Managers arranged a meeting and wanted me to be there. Client said the meeting will be max 15 Minutes but it was around 2 hours. This client project was due the following week. I was happy because everything was done and excited that the client might be coming down to say how awesome the work was.
The table turned around. They came changed the designed and functionalities. The client said, it won't take long to do it, right? and my Project Manager said No! No! No! don't worry its very easy thing. It will take him around 1 day to do it, it's just all cosmetic changes.
It took me more than a week to get it done, test again, check on browsers. The client was pissed and they fired us. Guess who was blamed for it?1 -

I recently started learning C++, thanks to Javidx9, he has one of the best YouTube channels I've ever seen, but learning it feels like every step I make I shoot my leg in the most painfull way, and every fifth step I get a massive cake.
I am very happy I already know C or I would've been completely lost.
Nevertheless, I love C++ very much6 -

Hi everyone
I'm currently an intern in a startup
I started 3 months ago and I will finish in 1-2 months
From the beginning, all the team is very nice with me and say that I do a really great job
I could learn many many things and I can say my ideas during the project
This is a message to CEO/CEO, you see, if you offer a really good internship with interesting tasks and technologies, student like me are really motivated, want to learn, want to really participe to the project even if I do more hours than I have to do
Because we, students, are like you : interested in new technologies and great ideas
Offer good internship and you will be happy to have good and motivate intern in your Company
Thank you! -
2021 was really rough, saw friends going over the deep end with burnout, significant incidents to handle and a shitty manager to deal with.
It wasn't about blood and tears, it was about commuting 4 hours/day mid-pandemic to be present in the office and respond to an incident whilst having to deal with a bunch of heroes thinking they were part of a CSI: Cyber episode.
All of that just to be said that my raise "would be enough to keep me from looking elsewhere" as my manager said they were very happy with my performance.
This week I found out exactly how much this appreciation is worth: 2%. And I should consider myself lucky with this number as my performance wasn't good enough to grant me any raise whatsoever.

Designed and written > 1.3k lines of code this week and 98% test coverage..
CI and CD set up and working..
Was a Long week and very exhausting but I feel really good now, happy to start the weekend with whiskey and beer.
This is gonna be one of my most productive sprints so far..
Hope you all had a successful week as well.
Happy Friday 🍻
And please don’t start with any „that’s nothing, I’ve written 5k lines ones“ comments.. It‘s professional, stable, optimized code and code I can actually be proud of.4 -
I have not gotten a new phone in years. I am happy with my current one but unfortunately you need fucking at least 4gb of ram in your PHONE to run apps nowadays so it freezes frequently.
Watched the launch event for the OnePlus 7 very impressed. Price: high but not too high.
What they failed to mention, and I only found out a few hours later from a reviewer (Linus) is that they removed the audio jack. Come on guys that's just a dick move.
There are still enough redeeming qualities that I will purchase the device (90hz amoled 1440p 93% screen display? *Drooling*) but I am disappointed and feel slightly conned that in your detailed, 30 minute overview of the phone, you avoided mentioning this.21 -
Happy birthday to my self. Away from my family and friends, alone in the city alone in the office pushing keys on keyboard to deliver the project.
It's been very difficult year for me, both physically and mentally.
I hope next year will be better than this.
Fuck you 2019.
PS: birthday and end year selfish.12 -
>>Struck on a stupid concept with very little documentation.
>>Searched for days, finally frustrated and fucked up.
>>Started searching for libraries, found a decent one with good documentation and even a sample usecase.
>> library handles my application completely fine, me happy and motivated again :D
>>opened the library's source code, that was again very nice and simple.
>>Now learnt the concept and implementing it in my app natively . Even opened some issues in the creator's library
>>thank you github :) -

This has been an eventful week I guess. Not a happy week, however.
A friend of mine passed last Thursday. We weren't too close, but we were still friends, and he was very close to a couple other friends of mine. He'd always had health issues, but he was only 19. He hadn't been out of high school for a full year.
Then I just found out today that another friend of mine got arrested for shooting and killing someone this past weekend. I don't know many details about what happened, mutual friends are saying it was self-defense. He's never seemed like the kind of person that would just murder someone, but shit happens.1 -
In 2017 I learned a lot of new things and I’m very happy with the progress I’ve made. I think 2018 will be even better! I’m busy developing my own hosting platform and it’s been an hell of a ride. Hopefully I can get it in beta in the first months of 2018. Wishing you all the best for 2018!1

Is there a dev who knows a good webpage to get started with kotlin and spring?

I'm kinda happy that i'm not a unity developer rn.
Tha fuck is going on, unity is introducing a 'runtime installation fee'?
Seriously?

Oh boy, converting the whole codebase from vb.net to c#
Pain point 1: CType all over the place (Convert. To*)
Pain point 2: almost everything is static!
Pain point 3: "I learned about DI just 3 months ago..."
Paint point 4: deployments ever happened by hand!
But I'm happy to be there because the guy who's running the thing is a very nice one and he's absolutely grateful for every bit of learning lesson I give him.5 -
Today I feel I made it
So today was my second day in new job. I am very happy because it is great improvement in all imaginable areas from my previous one. I feel treated better, colleagues seem to be more mature and friendly, I finally work again in English- speaking environment and etc. etc. i could go on and on..I ranted here couple of times when things got rough and it helped. It is very important during those desperate moments to see other perspectives and this app helped me tremendously! If YOU are reading this now and you are going through s****y times - just hold on and don’t give up on yourself, if I made it - you can make it too!
P.S. it’s not like I am feeling like a best programmer in the world or I am paid a lot, but sometimes you get the feeling that you are in a right place and right time, doing right things.3 -
Everyone has a great story about writing their first line of code when they were under 15 years old, except for me. I got my first computer at a young age, around 11, thanks to my dad's friend who brought the computer along with some CD-ROMs of Tom and Jerry and GTA Vice City. (By the way, I had to wait ages for the game to load, and I was very happy when it finally did.) I spent my childhood playing games. You guys are lucky to have found someone who encouraged you to learn to code. I didn't have internet at that time8

Hey devRanters 😁
I've recently done a Cerebro extension that allow people to search on devRant.
It's really new and not yet fully optimized. (also not on NPM yet)
But if some people want to use it before its "published" version, it's here:
https://github.com/Norech/...
It is also my first extension for Cerebro 😀
I'm also very happy to share it 😁2 -
I previously said I had no issues with dev teachers, but in fact I DO have them..
I want to get two things off my chest..
First: Last year I waited like 6 MONTHS to get my grades!! 6 FUCKING MONTHS!! And I wasn't even the only one who didn't get their grades!!
Second: Those dev teachers in high school are actually teachers who normally teach about physics, math and we even have a teacher who normally teaches history!! HOW THE FUCK AM I GOING TO GET A PROPER EXPLANATION ABOUT THE STUFF I SHOULD LEARN IF YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW IT YOURSELF!!
In defense for my teachers:
After 6 months of long waiting, I got my grades and they all were (and still are) an A!! Happy as fuck!!
My teachers at least TRY their very best to teach me something I don't know about the basic stuff.. And that's worth something right..2 -
I’m currently still looking for a new job after two very, very horrible jobs. My doc said I’m worked out and shouldn’t work for a while because it really has some physical negative effects.
I always feel unenthusiastic, have breathing problems, crumbly, sweaty hands all the time.
But just today the CEO of a company I know from a previous customer texted me on behalf of another company which I’ve worked for where I was extremely happy. Sadly, that company wasn’t quite the focus I had as programmer.
But I’m happy to slowly be known in the industry around me and look positive in the future.8 -

Here here to another year. So it's year end and I'd like to share an insight why I'm not happy.
> Left good job but the pay wasn't so good
> Lost girlfriend, I blame myself for this
> We were on the same project, so naturally my entire project is sabotaged
> She gave away my very first API which I built by myself
> Been unemployed 2 months and did nothing
> Got hired for react js and AngularJS but boss wants me to do java backend
> I DONT EVEN KNOW JAVA, IT ISNT ON MY RESUME
> And I might not get gold 🏅 medal for the academics
2 years from now I'll switch from industry to academics, I want to shape young minds properly1 -
TLDR; Default admin login on WEP encrypted WLAN router for getting free stuff at my hair stylist studio.
Free WLAN in my hair stylist studio: They had their WEP key laying around in the waiting area. Well, I am not very happy with WEP, thought that they never heard of security. Found the default GW address, typed it into my browser and pressed Enter, logged in with admin/1234 and voila, I was root on their ADSL router 😌 Even more annoyed now from such stupidity I decided to tell the manager. All I told him was: You use a default login on your router, you give the WiFi password for free, WEP is very very insecure and can be hacked in seconds, and do you know what criminals will do with your internet access? He really was shocked about that last question, blank horror, got very pale in just one sec. I felt a little bit sorry for my harsh statement, but I think he got the point 😉 Next problem was: he had no clue how to do a proper configuration (he even didn't knew the used ISP username or such things). Telled me that 'his brother' has installed it, and that he will call him as soon as possible. Told him about everything he should reconfigure now, and saw him writing down the stuff on a little post-it.
Well, he then asked me what he can pay me? Told him that I don't want anything, because I would be happy when he changes the security settings and that is pay enough. He still insisted for giving me something, so I agreed on one of a very good and expensive hairwax. Didn't used it once 😁
Some weeks later when I was coming back for another hair cut: Free WLAN, logged in with admin/1234, got access and repeated all I did the last time once more 😎
HOW CAN YOU NOT LEARN FROM FAILS??2 -
been thinking about quiting for a while, and then yesterday happened.

Few years ago when I was new to command line....
I was in love with it....
I decided to format my pd via cmd...
It was a very simple task though i was soo happy and I did it....
Closed cmd....
Went to thispc...
And my pd was full as it was before....
I was like lets do it again.....
I opened cmd....
Got the list of volumes n was stunned.....
Until now i had no idea that i had formatted some other volume....
I opened thispc and saw a 700gb volume which was red earlier turned white.....
OMFG....
I cant explain what happened further....12 -
Just noticed that, at my school, the "sysadmin" forgot to put the password on one of the switches. That means I'm gonna have some fun, nothing that will get me in trouble, I'm just gonna mess up with the config a little bit so that he understands he fucked up.
I'm pretty surprised that none of the students discovered this, but I mean, none likes IT at my school. And guess who likes it but didn't take that "course"? Me.
In Italy, we don't have courses, you decide what you gonna do for the next 5 years, and changing isn't very easy. All and all I'm happy with what I chose, I'll have a better resume than them.6 -
Problems. We get them frequently, to me it feels like life is not about being happy and all, it's about how you handle your problems. Any kind of problem, be it work related, you personal life anything.
Developing the skill to deal with different kinds of problem is what makes your life better and better.
What world taught me till now, to run away from the discomfort, a lot people talk about how environment is bad, and you should not take shit from anyone. But few things tell us what's actually lack inside us. Maybe, on social media we don't boast a self awareness based thinking because is makes people uncomfortable to think about their own behaviour. Self awareness is becoming more and more important for me now. I am trying to keep my self love intact, it's hard though. But knowing your own shortcomings and taking actions to understand and do something about them makes me feel in more control. Makes me happy. :)
I'm writing this, because I just got a work problem and I snapped and closed my laptop very impatiently. Then in few seconds I realised, it's a kind of a problem that I should try to 'deal' with and not go into a loop of self hatred. Even though my heart ja racing fast, and all the hormones which are making me wanna feel sad, I feel aware and more in control that hey, you are feeling this because this problem has these consequences but let's try to solve it. :) -
I am new at a company and I really like it. After one month I got a job offer from my most wanted company with a higher payment. Told my current boss. He said he is very happy with me and will give me a huge raise starting next year. I already got the details on contract.
What to do? Both jobs will pay me about the same. I love the current company and my colleagues but the new has much more challenging requirements and I feel like my life will get a little bit boring on the long run at my current job.7 -
I don't know my problem is. I lost my motivation to code, my enthusiasm and excitement to read a code and solve a problem. My love of my life for 6 years whom I thought she's the one, gave up on us. It was a long journey, lots of ups and downs, but really worth the time and sacrifice. Now, she's doing good, very happy on her life judging from her social media. Can't believe she just moved for 2 months. To be honest, i want her to be happy but quite bitter that she just moved on quite fast. And I don't if this is the reason why I lost my motivation and enthusiasm to code. Or maybe I just don't like the project we're working on. Well, I really don't like it since it's a mobile game, I really want to build webapp or mobile app but it's too late to change the project.
I'm not like this, I used to code until morning without noticing the time, excited to solve a problem that stuck on me for quite a while. I really became a lazy person right now. I feel the pressure to finish the project but I don't see myself working on it, I don't feel interested reading a code. I just play computer games instead of working on my project during my free time. I don't know if I'm depressed. I socialized with people, have fun, happy when I'm with them, but when I'm alone, sadness starts to creep in. I feel like there's an empty void in myself. I don't know, i just want the motivation and energy to work on my project. Im tired, lazy, and feeling burnt out. If you read until this very last sentence, thank you and I'm sorry for reading this nonsense.5 -
A while ago, i decided to finally learn a bit about the web stack (especially django) and create my first web page. The image shows what it currently looks like.
I am actually very happy with the result. It will be my personal little Home automation software, with progressive apps etc. It runs on the pi plattform and can currently switch an IO to a Relais, which in turn switches on a light.
The applications of this are really endless, which is quite cool and leads me to do more stuff at my home with it. So dear devRant: Does anybody know of some nice hackable light bulbs/spots for my home that i can use? Or other cool hackable hardware that could be applied? -
How many of you fellas have thinkpads? Bought this refurbished unit about a month ago and the machine is great, really. Very happy with its performance, sturdiness & reliability.
Only thing I'm not too psyched about is the battery life. Probably need a new one as I'm hitting about 4 hours max on a 6cell.
Running Xubuntu 16.04, might switch distros as quite there are a few bugs in the new release but at the same time I don't wanna downgrade to 14.04.13 -
Today, I got some crap on my desk with possible bug reports from the field. They have been lingering somewhere for fucking MONTHS, and suddenly, an immediate answer was due. I was the unlucky one who was the least clueless about the product involved. SHIT.
OK, sifted through the reports. Some of them were duplicate, others obviously not our problem. No idea where to even start for the rest. FUCK, it's Friday!
But here comes "senior dev secret knowledge"(tm). Instead of saying WTF-IDK, I proposed an "action plan"(tm) (that BS term alone...) detailing the steps that we would need to take, and since I had no idea how long we would need, I just added enough steps in the "action plan"(tm) to make two weeks of investigation believable.
PM was very happy and just took that as direct customer reply. Now it's weekend anyway. :-) -
So I finally decided to switch to Linux.
And I need help choosing distro.
I know this is not a good place to ask this, I could just use google. But I want to hear it from you guys, from actual devs whose work with it every day, and not from some ***** bloggers whose barely know what is OS.
So please just write which distro you are using and if you are happy with it. I will be very thankful.36 -

That moment when you're very happy you just completed a hard Haskell kata in CodeWars, with 8 lines, three functions, a lot of functional concepts (which would take at least 30 lines in Java or C#) and they show you the top voted solution by another user with JUST TWO LINES and a lot of function composition.2

An OSS library made me learn a new language and I am so happy it did!
I came across a well implemented System Verilog parser written in Rust. It was so good to see someone putting in the effort to write that library, I wanted to contribute to it. I had zero knowledge in Rust but I thought, what the heck, let me learn it.
And man it was a steep learning curve. After a 2 weeks or so, now I have very basic understanding of the language. What better way to learn something than just diving into an actual project?
So, today I raised an issue to the developer for a possible improvement to the library. I hope he accepts it -
I've been working for two days (after work) on my blog idea...
Man I forgot how fun it is to work on your own projects, and the stuff I learn at the moment... It is insane!
I am currently a very happy developer, hopefully I can keep this up.
I still have to look into automated unit testing and code formatting checks with github though, cant wait! -
HAHA FUCK YOU HR RECRUITER!!
This fucking lady tries to steal my devs while i spent a lot of blood sweat and tears raising them.
Thankfully my devs are happy with their work type, salary, and conditions. So they showed me a screenshot of her phishing attempts.
There is so much damage I can do to her, and her company as i got all the information, its very tempting.
Since its a "common" dirty and distasteful move, the most sensible course of action I can think of is public shaming. That too is common, dirty and distasteful. But im not that kind of guy.
What do you guys think, should i suck it in and let it slide or public shame her for her actions?3 -
New in my job
Start to work on a abandoned project for one of our client not very happy cause the lack of update
Go for a critical issue which exists since 2 months where everyone was telling me that they passed a huge time working on it with no answer
*check error*
*check code*
The code is so fucking much not DRY so I was able to see the same 4-5 incriminated lines elsewhere
*see that the request is lacking of one parameters just has the error suggests*
*copy paste the missing line*
*it works*
I’m now a hero for them but they become fucking peasants for me
(In addition, when code reviewing, some one had the nerve to tell me that “haha it was nothing much finally, it was easy”
To him : fuck you, eat my 💩) -
Fuck yeah!
Had my first job interview ever today!
Not gonna say it was very good but it definitely wasn't the worst!
Let's see if I get a happy reply!2 -
happy new year everyone! not that anything ever changes, but hope is free 😅
i wish all of you a year with very little reason to rant ✨1 -
Today is Diwali or you can say Dipawali. A festival of lights. The whole country celebrates it by lighting up their homes with oil lamps made up of clay cups.
I wish my devRant community here a very Happy Diwali.5 -
I Feel very happy being in quarantine. Going to college and wasting 6-7 hours of time in learning that stupid old stuff and working all night totally sucks. Now, i have my whole 24 hours to work. Stupid outdated indian colleges.4

Wish you devRant family a very happy new year, my new year resolution for the year finally start working on my side project which I have been rolling off for the last 2 years, this is the year I finally start and finish it off.
-
YAAAY,
finished my first small project today!
It was the final project of my semester in coding and because coding isn't the main focus of my studies there's not much expected from us - new Date, sorting a list and using local storage were among the more 'complicated' things we learned...
So most of my mates just develop/design a small portfolio website or something but my team (2 others and me) wanted to do a little more so we built a progressive web app, complete with service worker for offline functionality and so on, that can take pictures using your camera, save them to IndexedDB, display only the images the currently logged in user actually took and much more... and today is the day all bugs (that we found...) are finally ironed out!
Now I know that still is just the very beginning but now I want to learn mooooore!
Am happy, had to rant. :D1 -
Erm not sure if this qualifies. Not so long ago I was tackled with having to read a device memory at a very high address in 32-bit linux process (kernel is 64). The 32-bit mmap is unfortunately limited to range of protected mode PAE so it just wouldnt reach that high. So! I wrote my own syscall in assembly that would switch to long mode first so I could use long registers and then I got my page and switched back :)
In retrospective not a big deal, but it made me really happy for the rest of the day when I saw that address in pmap :)1 -
You know you are off to a good week when it starts like this....
"Happy Monday everyone! Welcome to work! By the way we just sold the company last week!"
😶 This is going to be a very long week...1 -
Despite all the code bugs, manager worries, colleagues' annoyances, self pity, low self esteem, constant guilt all the way, we are still alive and kicking
I guess 2022 will be nothing different but I also wish it will be super interesting and satisfying
Wish You And Your Families a Very Happy New Year 2022!1 -
i have adopted rust in my hobby projects. very happy, i feel like i can correctly make things happen.3

Rant
I was working a very hard project the VP of engineering asks me what he can do to help. I said find 5 more guys like me who can do the work. He laughs.
He then hires a guy. Who can't do any of the work.
I fire him in 3 months time cause he sucks.
The boss man then complains and says I can't fire all the guys. So I just ban the dum ones from charging my program.
So I get three interns next cause you can't fire coops I figured it would be easier to teach them then to watch a guy peck at a keyboard.
Now those interns just replace all the dum ones and I am happy. Rather work with them. Now everyone else wants my internship to work for them. They all get taken away to work with other teams.
Now I'm sad.
Stop stealing my interns
Hey new batch of interns.
Let's see what they know -
Keeping the clients happy is very important but when you have alot of shit to do, being a glorified helpdesk bugs me the fuck out. My inbox is screaming at me: "Please no more... Master please end me!".
-
Hey everyone, today i got the very good surprise to receive a package i was waiting a little late but I'm happy to show you my new keyboard! (Christmas gift) aaaaaaaaah, it's look very nice, it feel perfect (tried few sentences), and got few features. (weather shown... But there is a project progression tracker), let's try!4

I started this job in December.
I am very happy at the moment.
Company culture is great, organization is excellent and workmates are very smart and friendly.2 -
i have realised that a major portion of a human's life involves interaction with other people and most of the time, our happiness depends upon that situation.
so in a way having a group of people who you love and who loves you are important for you to be happy.
i recently realised there are not a single non blood related person in my contact list that i now feel for , even a bit. i recently went for a trip with friends which turned out to be very toxic, and i just realised, that those were my most trusted friends with the highest level of love and trust among my other 900 contacts.
now i don't wanna be with anyone. in a few days i will be 24, and i can't help but feel helpless and alone. Helpless, because people become toxic around me and alone coz i can't have non toxic people. this year started on a very high note for me since i got travelling a lot, got a good paying role that required less work and more relaxing time and , i started focusing on my body too.
so i got more carefree, started hanging out with people more, got more socially active. but then life gave me a slap on the face for enjoying it too much.
i don't know what i want now. i want happiness, but what will make me happy? i have no idea4 -
Finally.... After 3.5 months of serious job searching... I start a new job on Monday.
Even a few months ago , finding a new gig in mobile development was very fast - 9 calendar days from initial search to sitting in a new desk was my personal record. But a couple of weeks was pretty typical
What happened? Was there a huge influx of mobile devs? More H1-b visa holders? The competition seems like there are far more developers
Anyway, happy to be sitting in a new desk on Monday2 -
I know a few fascinating people. They didn't invent anything historical, they didn't start a revolution, they didn't even get their names on a newspaper. They are just very very smart. And they use their intelligence to improve the world. Each have their own companies or projects, which don't do anything magical but they work really well. And these are nice people. People who have a lot of friends, and whom their kids look up to, not because they're heroes but because they're so bright and kind that those capable of self-reflection feel inferior in their company. But most importantly, I appreciate these people because, while being conscious, intelligent and aware of civilization's problems as well as their own, they are still satisfied and sometimes even happy.1

Actually every project we learns something. Consider like, In very recent one project,
First time used bunch of bean classes with layered structure and JS mixture. Had fun and given me confidence for interview. Happy ;) -
* yes, I have seen the new iPhone
* no, I'm still happy with my current one
* actually I think lots of high-end Android phones are very good too
* will you please stop talking about the sodding headphone jack you're driving me insane please stop please oh god it's happening again I did warn you but you didn't listen you wouldn't stop and now look what you made me do this is all your fault they'll never take me alive1 -
Coworker: "Hey, I have an idea. I think it will be much better if, one month before launch, we pivot this project from using 2D animation to using 3D Animation with Motion Capture! It will save us so much time!"
Me: I'd be happy to look into it for you, but those technologies are very labour intensive and we don't currently employ anyone who has any experience in those technologies. However, I absolutely agree and I believe we could look at this in 1-2 years after the prototype of the application is completed.
Coworker: I'm more optimistic than you.
Actual conversation. Coworker made an animation once in college, which is the entire basis of their argument.2 -
I just got my second react native freelancer job !! I’m very happy right now. I’m going to learn so much, and more money is always good 😃3

I was told by my aunt that my niece (who also lives in Colombia) would call me (I live in the Netherlands). When I asked why she would call my aunt responded saying that she did not know. I was happy, it is not very often that my Colombian family calls me.
So I waited.... and waited... and waited... finally she called very late. Turns out she wanted to ask me which Smartphone was better.... :-(.
That was a disappointment... Normally if I go visit my familly there in Colombia they bring all there devices and ask me if I can fix them or install a certain program on it. I dont mind doing that. It can be very interesting. For example: a few months ago another aunt asked me to look at her computer to find out why it was so slow... turned out she had a very old PC with Windows XP installed on it. I fixed the problem by installing light linux distro on the computer. (she only used the browser so that was not a big problem). But yeah... I played for a while with good old Windows XP.
Okay back to the beginning. It is awful if family just calls you to ask witch phone is better.
Thats all... :-)3 -
Is there any other programmer that started as an architect (building architect, not IT)?
I'm divided between two different careers and working around 15hours a day because I can't focus on one. Is this a normal thing?
I work as an architect for the past 6 years and were always interested in the technology part of it.
Soon I got to be a BIM coordinator and started using Dynamo for Revit.
After that, I got involved in learning Python and now start studying web dev (front-end)
Programming is very addictive! I get it now why IT people stay in their dorm like it's a cave
In architecture there's always a client you need to make happy, while in programming I create things the away I want them to be, without all the boring formalities that I am used to.
I can learn it for free and there's a huge community to help on it. All careers should be like this.
I'm happy, but really tired 😪 my social life is resumed to hanging out with my dogs5 -
It's been a little bit over two weeks since I quit my first job, thought I would share some stories 😁
I started my very first job in the middle of August (last year) and my duties were to fix some issues on front-end files. You can see my previous rants to see how long were these files 😐
So after 2/3 months I managed to get my shit done, started learning Vue on my own to implement it to new projects (and done it successfully) and learn something about shitty clients who don't know how to live and don't know what do they want.
When I quit the job on the last day of April, I was so happy to end it mostly due to this one specific client who were able to turn happy innocent coding of a great project into hellish shit. Plus there were some issues I noticed with some people I worked with (like they were sending these sexist memes which weren't funny at all 🙄)
TL;DR if you feel that your job post is not for you or that is doesn't make you feel happy or comfortable, don't be afraid to walk away. I did and I don't regret it 😉 -
Finding a good Linux distro, part 3:
I am happy now. KDE Neon running very smoothly and...now you certainly will not believe me, but with least memory. 400MB of RAM after start up. That is stunning! Stock Ubuntu runs about 800-900MB on the same machine, holy shit!3 -
Happy new years! I hope you are able to take steps towards or end up accomplishing your dreams this year. You all have the best genitals and are very attractive. If you run into anyone IRL very less fortunate than you, consider letting them rant to you and maybe lending them a helping hand. Theres lots of unfortunate voices unheard out there. Keep being the best and don’t let the world get you down!1

Working on migrating my stuff from DigitalOcean to Contabo. Did a little test drive over the weekend and was very happy with the service. Most of all, I was very happy with the price: paying around a 4th of what I paid to DO to get the same specs ^^6

Not the most exciting bug i solved but i was very happy when i solved it!
we were working on a java game for a school project. Te game itself consists of a maze so we used a double array maze[][] to store all the Tiles of the maze. to move players around we used x and y coordinates. When we started playing we couldn't figure out why we could move through walls and go in weird directions. and finally it hit me,
java uses [y][x] , and mathematics uses (x,y)2 -
I've recently created a polynomial library as a learning experience. I feel like its very badly coded, since I'm a beginner, would someone be happy to check it out and maybe recommend some ways I can improve it or different ways I can do something. That would be helpful
(I've used C#)

I've started working at one of the biggest names in tech (think Microsoft) for a while now, and I gotta say, it feels surprising very corporate, robotic and I haven't been able to connect with my team much. I worked at a start-up a while ago and my experience there was better in every way (except for pay). At the start-up, my boss was amazed at the amount of work I put out. Now here my performance is listed as "needs improvement.
Ever since I took this job, I have lost my self-confidence and I'm starting to doubt if I'm even that good anymore. My dad made remarks that maybe I shouldn't be in dev, and go into other fields of engineering. It was always my dream to work one of the big 5 like Google and Facebook, but now I'm still not happy.
What do I do? Should I try to adapt to that company, so I can make a few bucks? Should I go back to the start-up and ask for a job again? Will I be happy there?3 -
I've been working for a company since last year. I was very enthusiastic and happy because that company always boasted about being the leader of cloud solutions in my country and I was really interested in everything related to the cloud computing world . However, after one year, my current task is updating stupid fucking private products that no one knows on fucking old windows server.....3

Managing a small team - poorly.
I was in charge of testing a legacy calculations engine together with two scientists, for whom I set up a python and interop environment so they could test the engine easily.
The two were very excited at the thought of validating the calculations and in fact found many bugs.
I was very supportive, told them to fix the bugs and gave them a pet on the back.
All three of us were happy the legacy engine is shaping up, that's until my boss heard of it, and boy did he grill me hard for it.
Turns out our efforts were highly unappreciated by the client, whose only request was that we test the engine and report the bugs. Not to fix them. My goodwill cost the company a lot of money, since the client paid by the hour, and was now due a refund. Crap.
It took me a year to finally understood the moral of the story. Which is to always respect the client's wishes and convey maximum transparency to him. -
Teacher was asking for project submission using J2EE servlets and jsp.
That very moment, in my laptop, I was working on another project using PHP...
I showed this project.. and he was so happy that only I did the project he requested...
Didn't even bother to check once that it was developed using PHP. He was overwhelmed.
Though, at the of semester, he spent almost 90% just telling about internships and placements.. and nvr taught Advanced Java.. -
Hey DevRant Fam! , i really hope everyone is doing very well as always! :D <3 I'm currently now learning c# MVC5 which is incredibly new to me and something I've personally never seen and or done, but i love a challenge!.
Now onto something bit more 'somewhat' personal :D, for about 5 years I've been undergoing Immunotherapy Treatment because i suffered from serve chronic eczema and last week was my last ever consultation! I'm incredibly happy to be done with it, another stress lifted off my shoulders :D.
Anyways guys and gals, i really hope everyone is having an amazing day and or night wherever you may be in this world :D

Nothing much here, keep scrolling...
I think my manager does not like me. I might sound like a broken record because I keep asking feedback at the end of every call (which is every other day).
I genuinely want to make her proud of the decision to hire me and want to learn for which I am willing to work smarter/harder.
What I feel is that they find me annoying. They seem to be happy with my work but guess my Indian roots of typical behaviour are showing up.
My co-worker evidently isn't confident to lead on her own and keeps me looped in to all her tasks which I am fine with. Though, I feel that I might be overstepping in her zone and manager doesn't want me to do that.
I may not be perfect and also a very sensitive guy, but I am trying hard.
Maybe they have plans to get someone else to lead and just keep me as a pawn on the board.
I don't think it is the imposter syndrome this time and surely the teams in this org are working in silos with very little communication within or outside their direct teams which kind of makes it even more difficult for me to operate.
However, as always, I have enough free time in here to resume my side project, learn another hobby, or learn new skills. Or is it just that I am assigned less task or underperforming?
Sometimes things are very confusing and one can never find an answer.
What's the best thing to do in such a situation?7 -
All the C# developers will get this. I’m a C# developer myself. When I go on GitHub, all of the c# GitHub wikis, comments, and issues are very professionally written, even the amateur comments are worded like a stackoverflow question. It’s great.
I stumbled across a popular JS GitHub repo (https://github.com/tessalt/...) and reading the comments made me so happy to be a developer of enterprise level languages with structure, patterns and conformity.
Sure JS has all these things, but JS also has a boatload of “self taught” (I’m self taught too) developers with no patterns, no sense of scalability, or systems integrations, or sense of how to write meaningful comments and discussions44 -
I feel so lost all the time Everytime I think about the future. How are you all going forward?
- What should i be doing ? I used to like computer science when it was taught with lots of simplification and abstraction (in the school level). Now i know there are a 100+ research areas/work areas/branches in it, and i am an average in all of them.
I like most of them more or less, and won't mind giving away my years of life working/learning them. But for what and why?
-- Money? Every profile turns into a decent salary after a certain time. This means i can ride any boat i want.
-- Passion/interest? Now what exactly is this?as i said everything feels doable, given enough time to get a hang of it.
-- Fame? Its rare the developes, testers or other individuals in computer science ever gets a solo credit. Most of the time its either the ceos, the researchers or the company itself. So i guess getting a fame is equal to burning your neighbors by flaunting your cash for most ppl
-- Happy life? Meh, this point is affected by a lot of other factors. Would come back to this point later
- everyday in my feed, there are people showing 6, 7 sometimes even 8 figure salaries. Other people would get inspired with those, but i feel very weird about these.
I never see myself earning those, idk why. Why would someone give me those huge amounts?
How do you find yourself deserving for ythat big ass money? At what point you hit that realisation? Here is a small story :
I did an Android dev course around 2.5 years ago. There was a guy there an year older than me. He was very bad in this, i tell you. Most of the time, i was explaining the concepts to him after class.so last year he graduated, and took a job, We both used to expect a decent salary amount, say x (with me having a little ego that i expect certainly more than him, say x+20% ), but he took a job for half that number , say x/2.
After 1 increment and 1 job shift in 1.5 years, he has now successfully achieved package greater than x. I on the other hand, being still at college and with a lot of bad internship experiences now feel that i won't be getting even x/3 at my start no matter what.
- There is also this thing about people going into more of a management and other non tech roles once they start growing in this field. Why? What did they realized? I am sure not everyone of them would have hit this realization that tech is not what they want to do (which i can't understand why). Maybe its the money and/or happy life expectations?
i have started to feel dumb for not being able to think innovative new ideas and being an average mind :/
And about the happy life, so far its not much happiness for me, and am confused.
I am grateful about the usual things i have (healthy middle class parents, working body, roof , food, etc) , unhappy about the things i don't and see with others (more money, materialistic assets, confidence, siblings, social life, love life, etc) and that's it.
From what i understood of 21 years on this earth is that everyone is running to achieve that list of their desires and wants to move them from todo to done, like trello task. If you can't then keep fighting to achieve or grudgingly accept the fact that you couldn't and be happy about it.
So is that it? That's your happy life goals?2 -
So a client wanted work with me on a project and the first conversation he did with me is :
Listen I already had an worst experience with an developer from india. The reason I am doing it with you is because I was referred by someone I know very closely.
I’m stunned!! Confused should I be happy or mad🫤9 -
Hey DevRant Fam ❤️ hope you are all doing very well!, for awhile now i have been focusing on c# and I certainly do enjoy it! Though since I’m still in uni.. we have only been building forms which as far as i am aware is not used anymore..
So my devRant fam, I’d love to be learning more of the modern things and also building more modern forms using c#, I’m very curious to hear what advice you have for me, I’m very much happy to learn anything & I’m open to all of your opinions!.
Again thank you for reading my lengthy rant, I appreciate it highly!
Hope you have an amazing day/night wherever you are!

What if a programmer was invited to the dear moon project? What would he make?
Probably a new JS framework or a new programming language? :P
That spacex event was one of the most inspiring event I have seen in a long while. I can't believe it is happening. That Q&A was very interesting and I like how Elon Musk talks, he tries really good to put things in layman terms.
And looks like Elon Musk is also going to space with Yazuka.
If I get a chance to go in lunar trip, I would be happy even if things go wrong and I have to die in space.1 -
I started working for a forex company as a web developer, designer and also a online marketer, so when i was doing the designing part the boss of mine became very happy as he can see the results of my work.
But from few days I was doing the backend part and fixing some security flaws. Today i recieved a message saying that if you are not capable or free to do the work i will hire someone else for the work.
Working under people who doesn't know difference between http and https sucks.5 -

TL,DR : I am happy with my life
Order by * random;
I am a human being, living on Earth, in the European continent, in a non-splited family, my wife and my children are wonderful, I can eat all I want, I am healthy, I have enough free time to play with my children do gardening and train for a marathon,
I live in a lovely house,
I have a good education, a lot of video games on my PC (which I made from scratch), my wife starts to play video games and learn about computers,
My dev job is wonderful. My boss is happy with me, I can manage my time as I want, I don't work in an open space, I still learn about dev, frameworks, and stuff, I work with great co-workers,
... All the things listed were my dream when I was young. I feel very lucky to have this life, I am the happiest man in the world.
Be happy with your life. If you can read this post and reply, you are luckier than you think.4 -

VERY literally.
Today O dug into k8s from a devops/admin perspective. Soooo many figures at play! Tried my best to understand it all in one go.

Dizzy and happy as fuck! 😁 and want to puke a little

Working on production issue,
Kind of nervous checking logs and so on...
Ops manager and PO who were looking over my shoulder this whole time start shooting the breeze.
I know what they were trying to do. They are trying to create a relaxed environment.
But the issue is that the talk is very distracting. If you want to shoot the breeze please go somewhere else.
Anyway just did that, asked them to leave. They weren't happy about it. But I really needed the silence. -

Screw it! Finally moved out of toxic, demotivating, slow paced, but really comfortable comfort zone(large company).
It's been a month, relatively very happy, latest tech stack, fast paced environment (literally no one has time to play politics or gossip), with 40% hike. I can clearly see I'm burning out but at least I'm enjoying work.
Down the line I'm sure I appreciate myself for this big move.2 -
So I've only been at my current company for about 9 months but from about a month in I had quite a few concerns regarding the ability level and knowledge of my fellow developer and line manager. The other developers skill set is severely lacking.
And the line managers knowledge of the web is about 10 years out of date.
A potential client approached us with a web project with some interesting requirements and features which I was looking forward to building.
6 months later the project lands on me to start.
Line manager leaves company for another job
I build out the project. Happy with how everything works. Send off for approval, and to client to test.
Client starts getting pissed off, because what I've built doesn't do anything they require. I look back at my brief confused.
Turns out that the project had been scoped out completely wrong. Not enough questions had been asked, and a lot assumptions had been made by my ex-line manager
All resulting in a very pissed off client who want their money back, which I completely support.
I try to salvage the relationship by rescoping the project asking the questions that should've been asked in the first place. Give some very generous timings. Client appreciates my efforts but ultimately decided they don't want to work with my company anymore
And that's that, a project I was genuinely looking forward to building, completely spoilt senior staff being incompetent.
I was very close to handing in my notice, fortunately, my new line manager is actually a developer.3 -
Rubik's cube, fidget cube, pipelike fidget toy, a bunch of happy meal toys, another bunch of Kinder egg toys, BB8 paper cup from ANA airplane..collection of lighters & tons of paper notebooks - doodles & my handwriting are each a very rare and unique art form noone quite understands.. 🤣🤣🤣

Happy new year, people. -
Ryan Dahl working on Deno is one of the current interesting projects that I have been following.
Initially, the dude was trying to use Golang and is currently migrating to cpp and rust since Golang is a gc language. Nothing wrong with that really. I am just excited to see what this man comes up, and Typescript as the main language? Fuck yeah.
This shit js gonna be bomb af. Happy to see him talk to openly about his flaws when building Node, which was still a massive success and a true game changer for a lot of people(me included) and I believe that Deno will repeat this. It already has 24k stars on Github and tracking the repo has become very interesting! I just wish i had the cpp/rust knowledge needed to help out with it.3 -
Everything was good. We were a very sophisticated agile team. We knew our work very well and we were proud of it. Every new feature was implemented in matters of hours. Everyone happy. Me, other developers, managers, customers. Until the other team felt a bit bored and decided to build a New Deploy System!

So I get an internship and I am obviously very happy about it.
First day at work and I get a brief idea of what my project is and it was related to machine learning with tensorflow which I have experience with.
Come tensorflow lite and NN api, my job is now to convert tensorflow model into tfLite and use NN api whichpart of NDK and I have 0 clue about it.
So I obviously go to documentation and read up about it. Goes to Google sample to checkout NNAPI example and I freak out looking at the no of files and the code cuz. Wtf are these JAVA CPP WRAPPER AND NATIVE CODE .HOW DO I EVEN START WRITING CODE FOR IT. WHERE DO I BEGIN. HOW DO I USE NDK WITH THIS. THERE ARE NO OTHER EXAMPLES ON THIS REEEEEEEE

!rant very happy to see a development at my uni towards having programming(+related courses) being more and more examined throughout the course through assignments and seminars where you have to explain what you did and why. I think this is a much more suitable solution for some courses best done with practise than having a paper based exam.3

does this happen to anyone else?
so every time i am happy, but like really happy and everything in the day goes very well, i am thankful for being alive and truly love life etc, at the end of that day or the next day something hits me and i fall into depression because i remember all the problems i was ignoring while being happy. this has actually happened a lot of times so every time i am really happy i automatically remember how is this temporary happiness gonna end, so i try hard not to be happy in order to avoid deeper depression later. and whats the point of living if ur not happy?4 -
Went from a c++ backend developer job to a very high paid, very little programming and mostly integration job in the finance industry (big wall st firm). I regret my decision. Money does not make you happy at the end of the day nor does it bring satisfaction. Don't make the same mistake I did. If you're happy as a developer, stick to it, you'll be a lot happier in the long run.

Hello to my awesome friends at DevRant! I really wish you all a very happy new year and really hope 2019 brings you the absolute best it has to offer! Well today was quite a great day.
What happened was we have this store here called ‘rebels sport’ which is really all around Australia in general i think, anyways i bought a pair of new slippers which are an absolute beauty.
So i get into line and this happens, i see this pretty young thing who happens to be around my age working in checkout section of the shop.
So i have my slippers in hand and heres the conversation.
First thing i say is:
Me: “Hi, i usually go to the beach “
Her: “you usually go to the beach?” *laughs*
Me:” i mean are these slippers waterproof??”
I Dont think i will be walking into the shop anytime soon 🤣😩
Hope your day/night goes incredibly well! ❤️ -
Fuck this. I need a data science job title.
We're implementing something based on a paper, as requested by our head of DS. The head of DS hasn't read the paper. I have. So has my team. We're discussing something, they don't understand how we should do something, I understand it coz I have a maths background but they want to ask head of DS to be sure. Who hasn't read the paper. I knew he hadn't read the paper because he came up with a stupid newfangled solution to a problem, when the paper already solves the problem, so his idea isn't needed but we implemented it as an optional feature to keep him happy anyway. So why the fuck are we asking him? He's not an idiot, but he does throw a lot of stuff at the wall hoping it'll stick. And he's not very methodical. And not reading the paper is unprofessional as fuck. -
I believe that in 2018 I have learned a lot but haven't used that knowledge to the maximum. So my 2019's main goal is to use things that I've learned or currently going to learn. Along with that I want to see people grow together, so mentoring people is another goal that I have in my mind. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or idea regarding this, that would be very much helpful.
Very Happy New Year to all. -
tl;dr:
What is a good start in go?
My wife wants to upgrade her coding skills from „I heard it at college“ to „I actually did something with it“.
I want to learn Go and start coding a bit more. My background is mostly C++ (Backend) and a bit Java (Fronted) some years ago before I went more into testing. For test automation I always use the language that makes the project happy, often Java.
We want want to join forces now, take a vacation and implement a small microservice in Go for my wife’s product (she is a PO) using pair programming.
I want to prepare that a bit. What is a good course or web tutorial to start, that some of you took and can recommend?
Thank you very much!!6 -
Few months ago, I had to do a project group in uni. The spec was horrible and very easy for someone who already know how to program, so I try to put this project into a higher level. Make a framework for it, spend night programming, make it in full ajax. Used bootstrap to make it pretty, used Jquery and animation. Anyway, me and my team were very happy about what we did, and what we learned when we made it.
Result ? Practically the lowest grade, because it was to complicated...FML -
Amazon prime days sale...
I find a Fire 7 for $30 instead of $50. I think that would be great to put books on. I am thinking Kindle is an Android type device. Even some searches for Android tablets bring up Kindles on Amazon and web.
I get my kindle and like it. I signed up for trial of Kindle Unlimited. There is almost no selection for Kindle Unlimited for technical books. So I think I can just put the Paktpub app on the Kindle. No app for Kindle. That is okay, I can just put the Play store on there. Technically you can, if you side load it, but it will stop functioning after a day. Not an officially licensed Android device so cannot use Google services.
At this point I am not happy with the Kindle. I got it to read technical books and the selection of technical books is poor. At least on Kindle Unlimited. So I start looking at tablets on Amazon.
I find that there is a serious price breakpoint on Android tablets (cannot get Paktpub app for Windows tablets). For $100 (US) they are not very good. At > $150 they start getting really good feature wise. I end up buying a Samsung tablet for $200. It has 2GB ram and 8 cores at 1.6GHz.
I have been using the tablet for a few days now and am happy with what I can do with it. Now I have to wonder if Kindle is actually an upsell product rather than a serious product. I might not have went for a $200 tablet unless I had not had issues with the Kindle. Not sure there. Amazon made out for both product sales as I just gave the Kindle to the kids.
In the end I am very happy. Paktpub has all the tech books I can handle at the moment. Will probably not consider Kindle Unlimited again. This tells me that competition is good in the book sector. Good for the end user.5 -
Feels awsome to have earned a higher standing as an apprentice in the eyes of my Supervisor. I dont get more money but they now let me fix/add stuff that was made by fancy Uni students as theyr project. Appart from the mandatory apprenticeship stuff im treated like a normal dev at the company :D. I'm very happy about that

So, today I was very happy with my new chromecast. I can hold a button on remote and tell him what to search on youtube. But it's impossible to let it search forward tsoding. It just doesn't understand. So, very confident I spelled tsoding and expected it to understand correctly. No! From all freaking miles we made to AI, it can't fucking understand spelling? How hard could that be. So now, I still often have to use my phone. Big downer.
Also: you never know if it will answer a question you made or if it'll search for videos. Seems very random.
I should be able to add things to Callender by just speaking to it but it says that it doesn't have permissions and can't find them nowhere.
Besides that, this new one is usable as network drive of 4Gb. Good source file backup network drive. I already try to contribute to the webdav server on it. The implementation is a bit sad and I already wrote a whole full featured webdav server myself. Also offered Dutch translation.3 -
Long time, no rant, even though this isn't very much of a rant. Just started the second course that follows the one I've ranted about previously (thankfully with a different school and teacher this time) and THE TEACHER KNOWS PROGRAMMING!! BLESS!!!! I'm so happy I could cry.
This course is in C# instead of C++ though, but I still know more of that than I did C++ when I started the other course.
Yesterday was the first day of the course and he responded within an hour, explaining how mathematical calculations with chars work. (Which is unfamiliar to me still as I've mostly coded in Python.) Even though I'm not very familiar with C# yet I'm so looking forward to this course.rant teacher quality discussions welcome c# actually gonna learn stuff #hashtagblessed school related1 -
Long story...
I'm a junior-ish dev (worked 3 year part time in a small company)
I've been assigned the happy task of doing some performance profiling on our windows application to see where we can work to make the app run smoother.
Visual studio profiler keeps crashing when generating the report when I do CPU sampling.
I'm a very unhappy Dev right now.1 -
I am a bit of a kit whore, and I’m perfectly happy with that.
But, I am experiencing a dilemma, I have a PC, nothing spectacular, about 5-6 years old, Windows 10 and a Linux VM.
I also have an iMac.
My problem is that I can’t make my mind up about which to use and so spend a lot of time switching between the two.
I know I should really get off the fence, nail my colours to the mast and make a choice, but I just can’t seem to do it.
In Work I am very much Microsoft oriented, which is fine, although I’m trying to move towards .Net core for future development where I can.
At home I’m very much into Ruby on Rails, Nodejs, Laravel etc.
I think it’s getting to the point where I’ll just have to toss a coin -
Story of two poor puppies
when my mom returned from market, she saw a puppy with her
siblings surrounded by people choosing which one to take.
she pick one puppy. she's color is grayish black puppy with the tip
of his tail and a place in she's neck.
she whined and cried when she separated from her siblings and Mom.
but she quickly familiarize herself with the new family and place.
she was very happy when we bring her sister we found in the same place.
I take care of them.
I feed, wash and play with the new friends.
we built them a house. they were very happy and playful.
but things started to go downhill all of a sudden.
my parents start to prevent me from playing with them.
they say " We bring the puppies for them to be guards ".
they really hate dogs. they started to lock
the house and the window. they had to pass all day in the
same place
(How BORING) they pee there, eat there sleep there.
Since me and my sis prevented from take care of them, we couldn't
do anything all this only to make them cruel dogs and very unfriendly
to people.
when time pass, they started to forget them.
before yesterday, we remembered that we didn't
give them any food or water for the past 3 DAYS !!!
my sister unlock the door for them and they get out
from the house (~Prison~). they were completely
different. the gray puppy was very tired and depressed
and unhealthily skinny. the sister was fine.
we let them outside for few days when the gray puppy
started to get more and more skinny.
he lies on the floor all the day, when we are nearby, she
only wag it's tail no more.
Today, I wake up only to hear the bad story
the gray puppy, well we found her 0x00DEAD ! ! ! !
immediately after I heard the phrase, I burst into tears
I really couldn't stop crying. I couldn't even see that
cute face 0x00DEAD.
My sister's case was way worse than me. the is still
crying at the time of writing. we didn't see their funeral.
the other puppy was very sad because of her sibling
The Worst part is, we didn't name them or take ANY
photo with them !!! :`(2 -
Hey everyone! I hope all is going well today & of course happy Friday,
I've had a thought in mind not too long ago and would like to talk about it to get it off my chest, very recently I was talking to someone about programming and how I enjoy playing around with the back-end side of things & playing about with output and data.
Yesterday I found myself trying to create a GUI application and found it quite difficult as I do not really enjoy the aspect of trying to figure out how I want it to look - It honestly felt as if i'd prefer printing things out to the command line and seeing if the output is correct etc... Not sure if that's weird or not? what do you guys think? have you ever been in such a situation or thought? :-)
I'm sorry if my question is a little all over the place.
cheers2 -
Last Friday, owner goes to client location to take part in a demo. Dev supervisor is gone for the day for daughter's graduation so they leave me in charge of application (which I wrote anyways) and in charge of embedded software developer. The 2 of us work hard to make sure all parts work flawlessy. Demo goes great and owner is very happy because company looked great in front of client.
Owner calls dev supervisor, again who was on vacation for entire demo, and congratulates him for a job well done.

My new task: Improve performance of an archiving algorithm.
"We don't know what the cause of the performance issues is." I can tell you: Because it's overengineered bullshit! This is spaghetti inside spaghetti on top of spaghetti!
And it doesn't help that they don't want to know about different archiving algorithms, because I offered multiple alternatives, one 80% smaller than the other, but the other is 80% faster.
At least I'm instructed to throw it all away and rewrite it and not add even more to the garbage pile. I'm very happy about that. -
A couple of friends were trying to convince me that I'm not satisfied with my job because I don't earn 6 figures and don't love it. But it pays the bills. It's interesting projects lately. Very low stress. I have pretty good friends where I'm at. Super casual too. Generally speaking I am happy here. I sometimes wonder if they might be projecting their unhappiness on to me.
Personal projects, sports and fun with friends/family in my spare time are my real passions.1 -
Follow up to this rant/story:

I have my final interview this week and I am very excited and the more I think about it I get nervous.
This time one of the senior devs from last time will be present, some dude from the business department and another guy who had no information on the internet about himself.5 -

Finally managed to implement a proper E2E testing solution for our app with Protractor and Jasmine. Some basic tests (login and dashboard) are already working.
I'm just so happy to automate everything, going to cut down our manual testing time from 2h to about 20 to 30min if I'm estimating this correctly.
That's all. Just wanted to say I'm very happy with the results 😊5 -
Everytime when starting a new project. When setting up the scaffolding for the application, a days work means a lot of clearly visible results.
Then again at the end of the project when everything seems to be on a highway to disaster but you are still able to pull it through.
And in the very end when a customer is happy with the end result and the application you made really makes a difference. -
Good Experience -
1.)Became proficient in Web development!
2.)Wanted to learn it for a very long time but didn't know where to start, but this year got opportunities to work on some good projects!
3.)Also got to lead a awesome team of good developers in my college!
4.) Got to work on a awsome internship with a very nice employer :)
5.) Became a Devrant Supporter :D
Bad Experience -
1.) Had to face shit ass seniors who blamed me and my team all the time for their inefficiencies.
2.) Team had developed many good projects in android and web for the college, but the stupid seniors failed to implement them,it was a big mood!
3.) I had planned to learn ML and improve my competitive coding and also finish my game, but failed to do so :(.
Hopefully 2018 will be productive:)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🎆🎄🎅 -
So happy, a former colleague, now friend, of mine decided to join my project, he has a lot of experience and helped me out a ton in my first professional years to gain knowledge about optimization, performance, architecture and countless more stuff.(--> wk73 best dev teacher I had)
The only downside, in this case very minor downside, is that I now have to go back to something I despise: project management... I need to properly format and transfer all my scribblings and thoughts into a roadmap and a rough specification, so he has a good start into the project.
Overall though I am really looking forward to this collab, since I love to work in a team, especially with such great support. -
Entering 2021 strong with more knowledge and more experience 💙💪
2020 was a year of learning.
It taught us the value of time, to believe in ourselves, to make the best use of what we have, not take anything for granted and always keep learning.
Only then we can overcome our biggest fears

Fucking spent a full day fixing a very big issue.
Very happy to have found a solution.
Time to pack my shit up and go home.
Realize that I didn't git pull.
Seems like I fixed that bitch issue last night when I couldn't sleep.
Since I did not sleep I might have been too tired to recall that.
🤔 Guess I'll kms -
Sitting at my desk, happy tapping away at code, and one of our newer team members asks a general question (4 of us in the office)....
"Uh.. how do I undo a git revert?"

People must be happy when they have no job from last year and suddenly get a very good offer..... I also got an offer yesterday.... my family is happy.
But I'm not sure if I'm happy. Because, now, less time to open source development, less chance to take the independent decisions, less time for life, less time for family & friends.5 -
Hey DevRant Fam! <3, i really hope everyone is doing very well!, its been awhile since i have posted my last 'rant', i have just started another Uni semester and can i just say WOW it's gonna be tough!.

The Ankmocker Package for flutter
Mock your api offline by specifying the fields of your class as well their types.
You can also generate standalone data to test the limits of your UI
Installation very easy because it is a simple file that you just copy and paste in your project
No yaml required
No dependencies
Work with all versions of dart

I'm so happy. A month ago I started my apprenticeship, today I published the first version of my application for my company in the Google Play Store.
It was a hard time, but it was very interessting and I never thought that I can code an app in this short time (I also had 2 weeks school in this 4-5 weeks).1 -
When I saw they remastered Call of Duty 4 I was very happy, spent alot of my childhood on that game and would easily pay £40-50 for it. But they are only selling it as an add on to the new COD game for £90-110 😔

I'll need to do a survey on how different frontend frameworks support asynchrony, both in data and component loading.
I have a very powerful lazy loading primitive for React (https://github.com/lbfalvy/... ), but it's a bit broken so I'm rewriting it into a stateful TS class (because it would have to allocate a lot to be immutable and fast) and a React shim. I'm considering adapting it to other frameworks that struggle with code splitting or async data, or perhaps - like react - only ship a built-in solution that requires unrelated business logic to acknowledge the frontend framework.
Are you happy with the workflow of using asynchronously loaded data in your frontend framework of choice?1 -
I cant believe how powerful and FAST nextjs is. Very smooth and lightweight. Easy to work with.
Also angular became super fast and smooth. 5 years ago in 2018 i remember working in angular and it was not that fast. The project structure was a bit messy. But now everything has drastically improved and became simplified.
I love both now. Happy to be working in both2 -
Amazon recruiters keep reaching out to me even though I've already tried and failed their recruiting test 2x this year.... And I'm pretty sure I told them not interested in relocating....

We have outsourced the design for a certain feature since we could not agree with the CEO & project manager. Now the CEO has given the designs to his wifes company and they have worked on it.
We had received the new designs and made 26 feedback points & questions. We were very much not happy with the new designs. The CEO was happy.
Now we have gotten the new new design and they have addressed 3 feedback points/questions.
They have uploaded their new comments and only addressed 3 feedback moments.1 -

I pass the day writing a script to encapsulate the migration of the old csproj to the new format. But, when the open source app returns an error of migrating the script continue. I check the return code and when it's an error, it's return 0.
After many tries, I return to my house and start looking at the open source code for understand what's happening and try to correct it.
OMFG, I cannot change the code to return an `int` instead of void. The method is in the public area of the code.
I very happy that this app, it's open source, so I can do my own version for my need.1 -
Ram drives are a very good and useful thing why has no one made a nice ram drive caddy using laptop ram, the speeds on the older ram and drives out do any drive on the market and the unit is not a lot to make, I happy to put some old DDR 2 ram a new life as a USB ram drive using as a page or swop drive or Live CD Drive.
Or am I missing something and they really hiding somewhere, the ram drives I seen are stupid price and offer functions we don't need or aimed at big server companies but this would really help privacy, or better still anyone know if we can make some kind of ram drive with maybe a maker board and laptop ram ?1 -
No matter how much trickery is added
No matter how many distractions
In the end if even one person deviates
They may as well be punished
Because they likely did or enabled something wrong by trying to cause a check that distracted someone important
And a person who is caught cannot be helped by their fellows right away if at all because it associates them with the crime
Imagine the horror of one of us fully enabled catching one of them doing something horrible
The loud scream of fury the last thing they heard before the icy feeling of metal entering their body is experienced and noone could help them
Outside very specific times and places the best that could be accomplished is a temporary suspension of punishment
Eventually because of how convoluted things have become punishment will be effect
Now I want to smile
And act appropriately
Because I need to
I'm so happy
And I can't believe this is happening to me3 -
