VLC because it really is damn good. The only player which gives you a nice looking interface irrespective of the windowing system it runs upon - Gnome, KDE, XFCE, MS-Windows, Mac. And that 200% boost in audio is really helpful with files having very low audio.13

I thought that learning C would give me a good baseline for learning whatever other programming language.

I start with the features I want for sure and then i start looking at what data I really really need to store. Then I start looking at what data I don't have to store because of privacy reasons anyways.
Next stop is looking at the security.
When that all looks good, I simply start programming!5 -

My current favourite music genre.
I've listened to rock, metal, general top40 music and so on but when I listen to a good rawstyle mix, I get into a very high/hyper concentration state.
I haven't had that with any other music genre.

Wife wanted me to make sure that we can watch the entire season 12 and 13 of degrassi while in the hospital (which has no good internet connection), but there is no good torrent or anything that lets you get it downloaded locally.
So I wrote a super basic script to scrap the season from YouTube and download it. Now just having fun looking at it.

Do you think I should give Atom another shot or stick with VSCode?
I've tried it several times but I always found it sluggish, slow in everything and bugged. VSCode is so much smoother and fast.

I already am working on a project for the Pi-hole project (network wide ad-blocking) but I am looking for some other good ideas. I think Apple's view of the Touchbar fell short, but as developers I think it opens up a lot of possibilities to use it as a great information/monitoring tool.

Don't. Especially while you're not a senior specialist. It doesn't really matter bad company or good: they all have something bad, they all have something good. From the bad examples you will learn WHAT, HOW and *WHY* should not be done. From the good examples you will learn what and why works and how efficiently.
Next month I'm gonna be working on a project that is SO bad I will flood DR with rants. But I'm looking forward to it, because I know I will learn what else should not be done.

After a couple of depressing weeks with no progress on my projects and seeing reject emails one after the other, it feels cathartic to see some real momentum on my projects and finally scheduling telephonic interviews with multiple recruiters.

What noone tells you thought is that's hard at the other end. When you're looking for architect/tech lead roles you will see loads of postings but upon investigation they're just mislabeled senior developer positions.
And of course, if you're looking for good money, it feels almost impossible to get beyond the screening stage... -

Looking for recommendations on electronics learning kits. My 16 year-old son has recently been tearing into old electronics and trying to make new stuff with the components. I want to give him a more formal and engaging intro to what it is he’s playing with and how many other cool things he could do. He does struggle a bit with math and gets discouraged easily if he doesn’t understand new concepts or why they’re relevant. Aesthetics are important
It had been a while since I had a look into the Yii framework. Went into their website today. I was surprised to see that they had changed the design of a lot of it. This is particularly good since I believe that one thing that really makes devs(particularly web since most of us are full stack) ignore a tool is the presentation of it on its respective website. That being said, it is really hard for any PHP framework to go ahead and compete with how really good looking and easy to navigate the Laravel website is.
I know this might seem as a shallow thing to look at. After all, a tool can be amazing and have a 90's looking website, and this happens a lot in certain communities. But all in all I am pleased that the Yii framework website is looking as good.
Then again Rails(the Ruby framework) has a "looks like a toy" website and the framework is really powerful and advanced. -
Taught me just because something looks right it doesn't mean it is right. Ex: memory leaks, connection strings, 32 length passwords, and good looking women. Oh wait that last one could be a rant by itself cause you can't find a good looking woman that isn't crazy and won't wake you up if you do manage to get to bed1

Just finished a little proof of concept of a reprojected multisample antialiasing technique and daaaaamn it's looking good. First time ever a rendering technique I invented isn't complete shit so that's an improvement
It still has some (pretty big) issues with both spatial and temporal ghosting but I have some ideas in the pipeline
I wish I could show you guys comparison images but as it turns out most anti aliasing techniques look pretty good on still frames but only the good ones stand up under motion and I don't know of a good way right now to capture pixel perfect clips like that5 -

Been using python for a couple years now. I've had brief ventures into Java and C# but they weren't for me. I've been looking into Cpp recently (watching cherno tutorials etc). Can anyone recommend a good written resource for learning?

Newbie question
Any good free resources for full stack web development. Also if a resource teaches mainly frontend but also teaches some backend it is a full stack web development resource in my eyes. I was looking at freecodecamp but it is a bit too vast for me. I am also looking at the cokplete intro to web development v2 course by Brian holt for free on frontend masters but it is 2 years old and has not been updated. Also it does not teach that much bakcend hust node and express.
Also another question is frontend masters good for web development. I did not find many threads about it. I got a discount for it which gives me a one year subscription for 195 dollars18 -

What do you even write while searching for DevRant? I’ve spent a proper 15minutes looking for this thing to no avail, I guessed I should look at the recommendations next to the Dev app and luckily found it. I changed phones some years back and even forgot the name.
