It's disheartening to see a senior member of my team shitting on the code of less mature developers. Don't just say "this is unacceptable", elaborate, teach them. How are they going to action anything from that feedback?
Take the time to respond to their questions when they ask for clarification on what you're saying. Don't berate them.
Honestly some developers need to learn a thing or two about code etiquette.
There's no room for good cop / bad cop behaviour.10 -
So you build a beautiful site; you spend good time on UX, refactoring, server optimisation, getting good page load speeds, SQL all optimised - life is good.
Commercial team comes in and slaps clickbait, generic advertising, tracking scrips over the lot.
Page loads go from a second to 30 seconds and even though you made sure all those crappy ad scripts are asynchronous pages still hang most times. PingdomTools lists your page scripts as going from 40 files to over 900... now users are ringing me up giving me grief about how slow this new company website is...5 -
My team are the best coworkers I've had. Admittedly I'm only 4 years into my professional career, but my team makes me stay with my current job.
My team do a lot of silly things to keep everyone in a good mood, and stress free. This week we've had a game where in a quote moment you just yell the name of a primitive type (like BOOL). Why? No idea, but we're enjoying it.
We also have a chicken hat that we named Barry. He sits with people on their desk to do code reviews and such. When people leave they get their own Barry to take with them to their new job. We introduce people to him as a regular member of the team.
Sometimes work sucks. Being a developer can be hard, and can be stressful. Working with this team makes it worth it. -
A recruiter called today.
A new job proposal. Higher salary, manage some 5 men team, DevOps buzzwords, cool product, great conditions but then she says "and we're working only in Windows environment".
My ears ringed "only in windows env".. "only windows"... "windooowwssss".
"Nope, thanks, have a good day!" - hung up.18 -

My first job was at a web agency. Non tech background, trying to transition into tech through frontend. Month 1: graphic designer, month 2: CSS guy, month 3: UI guy, month 4: in the frontend team doing react, month 7: leading the team, also doing some rails backend, month 9: full stack, month 11: leading web team.
How? Everyone else in the dev team left at month 7 lol. Literally thrown into the middle of the rainforest, fighting bugs by myself. But became so good at debugging and learning on the spot. Left at month 12 for a better job.1 -
My boss just told me that my next task will be to create a website like amazon... It took me quite a long time to explain why something like that needs a big team and a good amount of money.6

My team lead force pushed to master. This guys always complains when we merge PRs with wip or fixup commits and he just did it himself and tried to cover it up doing a rebase on the master branch.

TL;DR: a good friend recently finished building an electric car from scratch with a team and I bought him a C++ devDuck as a congratulations gift!
one of my best friends recently presented at my colleges capstone rollout, and his teams project was to literally BUILD AN ELECTRIC CAR FROM SCRATCH. all the circuits and everything, designed from scratch, and nobody else on the team was very good at software, so he pretty much wrote the software himself. I just ordered him a C++ devDuck as a congratulations gift!8 -
I'm the leader of a team developing a project at my company. Recently I had an accident which required me to have a surgery, and I was out for the last month.
Since it's an important project, our CTO reassigned a Xamarin dev to help my team (in JEE) while I'm out, you know, cause "C# looks like Java". The guy had to write a file stream handler, and - though the guy does a really good job - it's funny to see how desperately he's trying to understand how Java works with streams. Censored because of reasons.7 -

My colleague often forgets to lock his computer when he’s away from it. I’ve told him countless times that he should lock it because of company privacy reasons. Yet he forgets. I’ve started to change his IDE font to Comic Sans lately, the team always gets a good laugh when it happens.

I got laid off.
19/08/2022 - I received an email at 3pm advising me that I'm part of a group of 100 employees who are being let go. All the accounts were deactivated except Slack so we can say final good-bye to our team.
The decision was made based on "Last in, first out". It sucks because I loved the work and team plus work from home.15 -
I have NEVER had a trust issues with a hard-working developer. It is always good to have someone you know would move heaven and earth to solve a problem, if demanded. It was a privilege to have worked with a handful of them.

Today I learned a lesson from corporate survival 101.
The difference between get it done vs get it right.
Boss, manager always want to get it done, while developers always want to get it right, most of the time. If you don't listen to your boss, manager and insist get it right, will eventually cost your job. I saw many get it done code, either the dev moves to another team or already left. They avoid their own code forever.
Perhaps be a good student, not the smart student is a good way to survive. Thought????4 -

Brought in a meeting a really good idea. One guy out of 9 sayd, that it's stupid and we could not use it.
1 week later the same guy proposes the same idea to the boss and team. Took all the merit and when I confronted him, he denied, that it was first my idea.

1. Aim is to complete work as soon as possible and not worrying about good coding practices.
2. Senior Engineers take credits for everything that Junior Engineers work on. And that Junior Engineers are just shadows
3. Credits? Team lead and senior engineers take. Complains/issues/delay in product delivery? Junior Engineers are blamed
4. Testing? Test cases? What are they? Why do we need them? That's what my team lead asked.
5. Take work without even knowing what it is or what is to be done and then just keep carry forwarding it.
6. Junior engineer dares to point out any mistake, he/she is very rude and is taunted forever

sprint retros with PM are a fucking farce, it cannot possibly get any more grotesque.
they are held like this:
- in the meeting, PM asks each team member directly what they found good and bad
- only half of the team gives real negative feedback directed towards the PM or the process, because they are intimidated or just not that confrontative
- when they state a bad point, he explains them that their opinion is just wrong or they just need to learn more about the scrum process, in any case he didn't do anything wrong and he is always right
- when people stand up against this behavior, he bullshits his way out, e.g. using platitudes like "it's a learning process for the whole team", switching the topic, or solely repeating what he had just said, acting like everybody agreed on this topic, and then continue talking
- he writes down everything invisible for the team
- after the meeting he mostly remembers sending a mail to the team which "summarizes" the retro. it contains funny points like "good: living the agile approach" (something he must have obviously hallucinated during the meeting)
- for each bad point from team members, he adds a long explanation why this is wrong and he is doing everything right and it's the team's fault
- after that happens the second part of the retro, where colleagues from the team start arguing with him via mail that they don't feel understood or strongly disagree with his summary. of course he can parry all their criticism again, with his perfectly valid arguments, causing even longer debates
- repeated criticism of colleagues about poor retro quality and that we might want to use a retro tool, are also parried by him using arguments such as "obviously you still have to learn a lot about the scrum process, the agile manifesto states 'individuals and interactions over processes and tools', so using a tool won't improve our sprint retros" and "having anonymous feedback violates the principles of scrum"
- when people continue arguing with him, he writes them privately that they are not allowed to criticize or confront him.
i must say, there is one thing that i really like about PM's retro approach:
you get an excellent papertrail about our poor retro quality and how PM tries to enforce his idiocratic PM dictatorship on the team with his manipulative bullshit.
independently from each other, me and my colleague decided to send this papertrail to our boss, and he is veeeery interested.

Clearly it’s as pissed off as I am about receiving shitty emails from the other team manager in my dept giving me and my team work to do and throwing us under the bus when he does jack shit all day except read BBC news and go on Facebook. On the odd occasion he does actually do work, it’s not good work, it’s riddled with bugs because he’s ‘too senior to need a code peer review’. Such a fucktard...
Oh, and the work he’s asked us to do technically sits in his team so I’ll be firing that straight back at him 😁
I’m all for being a team player and helping each other but I’m going to protect my team over helping someone. The gloves are about to come off....3 -

Debugging a system error with a good team of fellow developers/devops people is fun.
We had an issue on Friday where we were getting a pretty cryptic error in our error reporting system. A couple of developers and I got together with a couple of devops people and we worked it out well as a team and figured out a pretty complex issue in a reasonable amount of time with everyone playing a solid role.
Nobody tried to steal the show and everyone listened to each other's ideas on what the problem might be. Through and through a great debugging session and made me think about bad ones and good ones I've had in the past.4 -
I just spent 2 hours helping a fellow Sr Dev format an “if block” in code. Then helped show them how to step through the code. This is what passes as a senior at my company? I no joke have stayed at this job for 6 more months than I wanted to out of pure pity for my team. I want to quit so bad, but the team is in such terrible shape and can’t hire anyone new that is willing to stay. All good people personally, but gosh this job is just brain dead and eats my weekends when I should be focusing on family. Back to helping through the 500 line if block. There are worse things in life, but this just feels terrible.11

4. Evening 6 pm go on another call with the team explaining what you did for the day.
5. Time tracking software should always be on, so we can monitor your keystrokes.
6. Track time on Clickup tasks, as well as move them to appropriate tabs indicating their status.
7. Before u log off, post a detailed report on the group chat about what you did for the day.
Surely, this will increase productivity of the team, right?10 -

Christmas reminds me of my favourite development team ever. I first visited the team for a quick hello, before I started working with them, at Christmas time. Unlike the rest of the the company they had decorations and Christmas treats and the radio was on with Christmas songs. This set a very good impression.
When I did come to join them after the holidays I discovered that this team like having treats, would often sing songs together randomly and even make up new ones about their code on the spot. They had a great attitude to work and made the working environment a fun place to be. We did get lots done but I also learned so much being with them. When I left they wrote me a card filled with raps they had come up with reflecting my time with them. I still have that card.

So I'm working at the company for 8 months now. Best 8 months in my career, great team mates, great work, the best - a team leader who is one of the best developers I've ever worked with, but more importantly he is a good friend, brother like. We had great time, from the interview we understood there is a bro-mance there.
So why am I ranting? He got promoted and became a group leader, not even of my group. Now we don't have a TL and we're afraid they won't be able to get a swell guy like our exTL2 -
First Hackathon ends today. Long story short: I was the only programmer of the team, we only had 2 days to develop it (of which we spent the first day doing research, so 1 day of coding), so guess what it's shit.
I basically took a bootstrap theme, hardcoded some data. Put some js on top for interactions and a node js backend, to interface some APIs. Just by looking at the code you'll get cancer, but the others of the team where impressed, how good it looked an worked...
Let's hope the judges aren't familliar with coding as well (our challenge got two judges whereof one works at a bank as some guy whearing a suite and sponsoring stuff... Ao chances should be ok)

Just joined a new team at the organisation as senior dev.
Team lead keeps singing about how we need unit testing and good standards.
I implement domain pattern on the backend supported by unit tests.
It passes QA and then get an earful about the code not being 'restful'. What does that even mean?
Well, it matters not since team lead changes the whole feature in the release branch and all unit tests obviously fails. Builds start to fail.
The solution? Comment out all unit tests. In the sprint retro, we hear the same old adage 'we need 80% code coverage'

I wish all newbies would read clean code. I feel if you understand the concepts you can more easily join an established team and contribute more quickly with less do overs. I realize writing elegant, testable code is like making good whiskey. It takes time.5

When every ubuntu based distro fails, from kubuntu to xubuntu, lubunto, mint etc.
You will always have Linux Lite. How the fuck this thing manages to keep 2 vs code editors opened as well as firefox and chrome at the sime time while at 3.55g mem(according to htop) without fucking up?
Good engineering, das how. Kudos to my ninjas at the Linux Lite team. This is why I recommend this distro to anyone wanting to go Linux. Good for the beginner and the working professional alike(I use it for work)4 -
I just joined a team that is tasked with developing a robot that plays soccer. It was a lot of fun until I found out that someone in the team has been developing a full framework / rtos from scratch because existing rtos solutions were "not good enough".
I tried blinking a led with it today and found more bugs than I can count...

The guy who became my manager just pushes to the prod branch.
On a repo where another team clearly set up development and production branches.
This guy has been pushing code like crazy and I always wanted to take my time setting things up properly in our team: TDD, CI/CD, etc.
Because he pushed so much he became my manager and I was seen as unproductive.
Data Science and software development best practices just dont coexist it seems.
Yeah yeah, it's up to me to start introducing good practices, but atm "getting it done" takes priority over the real based shit.4 -
So, we’ve a small UK based dev team, we follow good practices and get good results. But ‘they’ want to deploy quicker (it was suggested we skip the test phases...) but don’t want to invest in more staff.
So their suggestion is to outsource development to Bangladesh and have us in-house devs work on discovery and innovation.
I’m uncomfortable with this as it feels they are thinking they can get quicker and cheaper dev done abroad (which I hate as it feels disrespectful to my fellow dev brothers n’ sisters).
Also disjointed as in my experience planning and dev’ing work best when you can talk face-to-face.

Today I was writing Selenium tests and was struggling to find a good way to test a text editor. We did a weekly code review and my team lead rewrote the test ij 10 lines to generically handle all cases.

I thought any fledgling dev could become a good one with enough team guidance, frequent discussion on ideas and reasoning with seniors, experience, and work variety
But one I know is proving they don't have the knack.
I really wanted to believe anyone could be a good dev if they tried hard enough but this one is just...
They've dragging us down.
Not paid enough to make it my problem to raise it with management. I've tried to help them grow but I've never seen such slow growth despite the different learning/teaching styles *we've* done to improve their capabilities (the entire team)
I dread working with them and I'm not alone apparently6 -
As a software house, we have many teams on different projects. One project was due to a Thursday, and the PM asked the team 1 week before if they could work over the weekend since there's a lot of things to do.
On the Friday before, one of the devs showed up a bit later than usual (around 10am), but ok...
After lunch he asked to talk to HR and also the boss. They talked for around 2h, then he started to say "goodbye and good luck" for everyone.
The project was on fire and he just... leave.
On the next 2 months another 4 people leave the company. All from the same team/project (but not with a big surprise like him).
Apparently, the team was constantly complaining to PM and boss about unrealistic deadlines and constant requirements changes, but they didn't did anything about it. Just when more than half this team had left the company they started to rethink this actions to this project and the others on the company.2 -
Yesterday, I and my team built a good hospital management system for Trauma centers containing two apps and two websites.So that the system should contain transparency. But unfortunately, we didn't made a place in top 3 but it was a great experience to build this project with my team.3

So apparently the CIO knows all about my team lead sucking it up as a boss, and is letting him do it. He's constantly on the team leads ass about stuff and it's stressing him out.
The CIO wants him to stop being so micro managey and let the team handle things... But instead of telling the team lead that, he'd rather just blast him constantly and stress him out which makes it roll onto us and stress the whole team out.
I wish the CIO would just tell him to square up or just fire him... This stress isn't good for anyone. -

That sounded good for me, until I realized that all they need is an interface between them (the boss) and other employees to force their style and monitor every fucking thing that could be different from a dev to another. But since the boss is a sEnIoR with mOrE tHaN 10 years of experience but he does not have any clue about good practices and how to make a code that does not push you to be humiliated by the client, he still thinks that he's the fucking programming God.

My current new boss is pretty awesome. When he arrived, we were a lot of juniors dev crumbling under pressure. He directly went to product team and to sales team and totally reduced our workload to something acceptable.
He values sane work environment a lot, and I think that's what make a good boss -
My client requested me to release the source code to their development team today. They are going to handle the further development from now. Client has paid for the app in full.
That wasn't a good news to me.6 -

Recently was in a recruitment hackathon for leading technology company.
So, to test ppls networking, team building skill they grouped ppl into a team.
I was teamed up with noobs, and had very bad experience.
One guy in the team was arguing to use PHP for developing a web app.
Me : What PHP framework are u good at!?
He: what is framework !?
Me : like laravel etc..
He: no I meant we use plain PHP!
Me (mind voice) : go fuck yourself, I am bailing out , I Do not need the job

It has been a week now since a co-worker and I started mentoring this intern who joined our team. I have to say it is quite satisfying. His reaction when I told him about lambda functions and list comprehension in Python was gold. I feel good teaching him stuff and the best part is that he's ready to learn, has a brain of his own that he uses and I'm hoping I learn stuff from him too!!!

How bad it feels when it work in a place where Agile and DevOps are mostly abused buzzwords.
Forced doing "scrum" with:
- half of the team providing endless daily reports instead of focusing on the 3 questions
- a scrum master that is barely reachable
- a product owner that would not even make a decision
- a sponsor that pushes us to go faster regardless of current technical debt (it's important to look good to other sponsors!)
- doing all possible scrum ceremonies with no value added
- not even estimating stories
- not even having accurate description in stories. Most of the time not even a description.
- half of the team not understanding agile and DevOps at all

Real story :
There's this one colleague, who was a very good friend of mine. Always helped me in everything. That one friend in the team, who shares a lot of stuff with you.
And she suddenly, turns offensive when it comes to professional things and mainly competitive stuff in the team.
She becomes a completely different person when I get recognition for something in the team or when I become popular in the team.
She has that feeling that she should always stay in the lime light.
When I steal the show by doing something good, she starts to show faces.
Decided that it is a unhealthy friendship, as the friend i knew is no longer a friend when it comes into professional behavior at work,
And it started reflecting a lot in our personal friendship, outside work too.
Decided to cut the friendship and only be colleagues.

TL;DR The prodigal son returns.
A long time ago my partner in crime left the company. So I was a "one man army", until management gave me 2 newbies to train. We'll call them X and Y.
X was new to the company, while Y was moved from a different area. During the time I was training them I realized which of the two had potential, or at least was paying attention.
Some more time passed and X was showing signs of being a good candidate to join the team. Y, on the other hand, well there were stories from his previous team. Not good.
Guess who was added to my team. It wouldn't be a rant if it was the capable one. Y was added to my team, while X was sent to a completely different area.
Time passed and I suffered many misfortunes. But this week, I saw him sitting next to my desk, X is back. I'll probably have to get him up to speed, but my little prodigy is back! -

Back at my masters degree there were 3 group projects and 2 of them were dev related. Being the last to enroll and classes had already started, I entered a team missing one person. 2 out the 3 team members were complaining how they couldn't keep up with the workload and kept doing nothing on the group assignments. The other person and me did all the work because we wanted to get good marks on the project. Sadly, the teams remained the same on the 2nd semester, mainly because all the star students were grouped together to our chagrin. This time though, neither the teammate nor me were lenient on our comments during group assessment which influenced heavily on the individual marking.

So I joined this new firm around an year ago and ever since my team lead resigned, we have been managing it ourselves. Then a senior member suggested me that I could be a good fit as a team lead role. Now there are members in my team that are more experienced than I am but they either don't want to lead or are not good at it. I never had a formal leadership role before although I have driven projects. Higher management is open overlook my lack of experience but has also said that I may not find lot of technical growth as I am moving to a more administrative role. Any piece of advice on what I should do? I would love to have a leadership role but would it really affect my technical learning?14 -

My worst team experience finished only a week ago:
- Be me
- be averaging 80% in completed modules and on track for a 1st
- have to take a team project worth double credits
- get stuck in random team with 40%ers
- lose 1 artist at the start (team of 12: 6 artists, 6 programmers)
- 2 artists contribute nothing and disappear for a few weeks
- I'm forced to do level design to have something to show (looked good tbh)
- weeks go by and too many contribute very little.
- by the end the team was basically 4 programmers and 2 artists contributing.
All other teams basically get an easy 2:1/1st just because their team turns up and contributes.
I could lose a 1st because of this module bringing down everything else, it also had a huge effect on what I could achieve for my dissertation due to time.
- did get an award at the end for managing to not kill someone and showing restraint 😂😂
Basically don't choose a degree where more than 25% of your mark is almost entirely out of your hands.
The small individual component I averaged over 90%! -

First, if everything is perfect there is no need to hire you.
Second, think about the value that you can bring to the team instead of making them feel bad, how can you prepare an improvement plan and start to learn the factors and reasons behind those decisions.

The company that I work for just opted for PHP in favor of Elixir, Node and Scala(Akka really) for building a high-concurrency system, because we have more people who work with PHP (mediocre skill really). How do we convince our team leads and higher-order beings by the hierarchy to try newer (or at least better suited) technologies? Good luck popening and pthreading stuff on this project I guess.11

I had very small experience on programming and applied for a dev Job kind of accidently.
But having good mathematical Background I convinced the Interviewer to give me the chance of learning during an internship. So I started a console Tool for special testing purpose with good success.
After the internship they asked me if I'm willing to lern Javascript and HTML. Though I had a lot of fun there, the answer was easy 😏
Now I'm a senior there having a team of 4-5 devs
And I still enjoy coding a lot 😎

One stubborn (but not very good) dev working on one part of new project (Windows desktop application with C# underneath) decided he didn’t like the interfaces we were agreeing for the algorithmic code.
Instead of discussing with the team (we were still very much in design phase), he made his own interfaces with the same name but in a different namespace, and in his assembly rather than in the base library. He was senior to the rest of the dev team, so when we raised our concerns he pulled rank and just carried on.
I resigned not long after that. -
I'm a backend developer and one day my team lead asked me to make a architecture diagram of our system, which he had to put in a PPT and demo it to a client. I did it for 15-20 minutes. And I completely hated doing it. I went and said "I will not do it". He then just took it from me and did it.. which he is supposed to. Felt very Very good doing that!!1

My GOTOs are:
- Check if focus on teamwork is emphasized. Does the company state themselves? Spend a day with the team if possible, see how they work together.
- What tools do they use? Sometimes this will hint you towards whether or not you will encounter a good environment or a jumbled mess.
- Is there organized communication? I know, sometimes there are too many meetings, but that is better than too vew. How often does the team meet, even if just for 10mins? How does management communicate with the team? What ways are provided to give feedback? Are suggestions to improve practices welcome?
I left my last company and joined my current one, where these things work out the way they should. While I liked both projects with respect to development, my mental state has improved dramatically in the new environment. Stress is down, productivity is up. I love my job. -

People think we depend heavily in javascript because our products are extensions, our golden product is an extension, so a few members of my team insist in depending in our core team and use their javascript stuff, even for string parsing, even if we do have a python package that does rhe same thing that is officially maintained too.

The team had a really good spirit. Often too good, as our team manager often gave up on us and left our weekly status meetings because we were all just joking and having a good time.
Still, we usually did an OK job and delivered on time.

We are researching enhancing our current alerting system (we use Splunk) to be 'smarter' about who is emailed/texted/whatever when there are problems in our applications.
Currently, if there are over 50 errors logged within a 15 minute period, a email/phone/text blast to nearly 100 individuals ranging from developers, network admins, DBAs, and vice presidents.
Our plan is to group errors by team and let each team manage their own applications. Alert on 1 error, 5, 500...we don't care, let the team work out the particulars.
The trick was interfacing with Splunk's API (that's a long rant by itself)
In about a day or so I was able to use Splunk's WebHook feature to notify a WebAPI service I threw together to send myself an email with details about the underlying data (simulating the kind of alert we would send to the team)
I thought ...cool... it worked. Show it off to the team, most thought it was a good start, except one:
Dev: "The errors are not grouped by team."
Me: "No, I threw the webapi service together to demonstrate how we can extract the splunk bits to get access to the teams"
Dev: "Well...this won't work at all."
Me: "Um..what?"
Dev: "The specification c l e a r l y states the email will be team based. This email was only sent to you and has all the teams and their applications"
Me: "Um...uh...the service can, if we want to go using a service route. Grouping by team name is easy using a LINQ query. I just through this service together yesterday."
Dev: "I don't know. Sounds like I need to schedule a meeting to discuss what you are proposing. I don't think emailing all that to everyone is a good idea."
WTF! Did you not listen to what I said?!!!
Oh well..the dev's proposal is to use splunk's email notification and custom Exchange rules with callbacks into splunk that resend...oh good lord ...a fracking rube goldberg of a config nightmare ...
I suspect we'll go the service route once I finish the service before the meeting.1 -

I reported to our team leader (who is not a developer) that me and my colleague has been having problems with our senior developer whose codes are unmaintainable and messy. I told the team lead that I am losing my trust towards my senior developer and that his codes are messy and not following the coding standards. I was nervous at first because this certain team leader is tight with the senior dev. But still, I expected the team lead to be objective.
I was surprised because the team lead asked me if 'I was perfect' and then the team lead continued to shift the conversation towards me. Team lead then started to compare me with the senior dev which is unfair because I've only been working for 2 years whereas the senior developer has been doing this for 6+ years. Team lead said that I was arrogant. Team lead sent our convo to the other teammates and friends. Team lead told me that I am such a baby.
Fast forward, the senior dev talked to me. Told me that he was busy so he didn't get to improve his codes. Which I dont buy because I often see his discord status as playing during work hours. Told me that it wasnt him. Which I dont know if i should believe since he always lies. Told me that his knowledge is outdated. Told me that maybe because I came from a good university and he did not. He apologized and told me he will improve. Sounds good right?
It's a lie. Because then my friend gave me a recording of his voice ranting about me after our talk. In that recording, he said that I have nothing to prove so I dont get a say. He said that he doesnt care about me. He said that I am cocky. Which I dont understand. I only commented abt his work, why is he attacking me personally? Plus, if someone new like me already already noticed the flaws in his work, what does that say about his skill?
My teammates then asked me to just take the fall lol take note that these teammates were also complaining about this senior dev. they asked me to just give them what they wanted to hear. That I am the one who's wrong and the bosses are right. I said I wanted to defend myself but they hated me for that. They told me to think about what would happen to them. They told me I am selfish. Is it selfish for wanting to defend myself?
I defended myself. I told the senior dev that my intentions are for the right reason. He told me he understands. Later that day, a friend told me he talked behind my back again.
Senior dev told me that the team leader cried because of the words I said. Which i found confusing because it was my own feeling, my own opinion that i am losing trust with this certain senior dev so why would the team lead be so affected by that? Also, i showed our convo to the most objective people i know and they said that i didnt say anything that is offensive nor arrogant I have no control as to how people would react to the words I say. It's beyond me.
I feel so helpless. I told those things to the team lead because I think a team should be open to each other but I was blown out of proportion instead. My friend told me that the team lead and the senior dev are still talking behind my back.
If they do this every time someone tries to speak up, will they ever grow?24 -

I was in dependency hell for two days.
Im a junior working in a team creating an ember app. Suddenly a main component refuses to work since an addon threw "EmberObject undefined"... Nobody could reproduce it and we where out of ideas, so I tried fixing it for 2days (7h total). I finally got it working after updating yarn :D

I was moved from a team I loved where I felt my tech leads were competent, where my tech leads valued my skills and my manager was fabulous and excelled at making sure everyone had the resources they needed and was rewarded for good work, to a team where my tech leads are inconpetent and constantly treat all the junior devs with condescension. Additonally, although my new manager seems nice and has good intentions, she is focused too much on the results of work and not the morale of her team. Consequently, she consistently ignores the negative feedback that is given about the tech leads because "the tech lead gets the results"

Today a senior developer and a colleague started looking into my code reviews and started commenting best practices that were never used in the team.
Got my chance back at the senior developer's code when he raised a code review, which had none of the best practices.
Gave back a good set of review comments to him :D

Mine wasn't bad. Seems like the project I am working on gets on track, I mean my team (squad) is able to do good things, I really like all the people I have on board. We all are in the same miserable but sometimes funny world.
Shit happens all the time, but at least there are other people we can share the shit with. -
As the head of the Web Operations team of my college, I managed to compose quite a convincing pitch on college mail, as a call for interns for the team during the summer. The basic idea I explained to people was that even if you aren't a pro, you can still try and apply: you have one week to impress me with your CSS/JS/PHP skills(Really basic stuff in the problem statement; I didn't even make all of it compulsory), and encouraged them to start from scratch, cuz that's how I made it last year.
Last year they had around 30 responses in 7 days - I got 42 responses in 7 hours itself. I could shut down the portal cuz of far more than enough responses, but where's the fun in that. ;)
I'm not a good programmer, I'll admit, but I certainly benefitted in this field of being the head of the web ops team with knowledge and experience my non coding friends keep sharing with me. Not having a lot of code buddies didn't turn out to be so bad.
It's not much of an achievement, geez, there's literally everything left to be done for a whole year, but well, good start! -
So i'm working with people from another team to bring about a feature. I was wondering, "how come they're churning out so much shit in so little time!?"
Apparently, they make code, merge request to the release branch, and then do unit tests later.
How do people, in good conscience, think that they can skip unit testing for extremely vital components???1 -

After being "migrated" into a newer smaller office and getting another team member we are now three people on about 5 square meters of space.
Another good thing is that we don't have an air conditioning unit in the new room and gained a few more PCs.
Oh and did I mention that we are on the sunny side of the building now.
Basically we are working in Satan's Asshole now. Good thing is that I am working on a thermometer now.

Best way to deal with office politics?
As background: we have our own implementation of some C++ data structures, including an "Array" class (basically the same as std::vector).
A few years ago, the senior guys on my team refused to add new features to it for (seemingly) no good reason.
So senior guys from another team added the features anyways, in THEIR repo.
My team couldn't stop them, but refused to allow the new features in OUR repo, so now our Array is split between two repos for no good reason 😢.
Two years later, here I am, hoping to clean this up. As far as anyone knows, there's no good reason to have it split up like this.
How do i convince my team that we should move the code to OUR repo where it belongs?7 -
Hi, I am the programming director of my FRC team from Israel, MisCar 1574. In this competition, the robots operate autonomously for the first 15 seconds scoring points and than for the rest of the match which is 2:15 minutes the robots are being controlled by drivers. Before the Detroit world championship we uploaded a showcase video of our autonomous, we reached a pretty good level and as the programmers we requested a specific song to be used in the video. This song is called in Hebrew "Yam Hashibolim" and it has a meaning to us, this is what we listened to while working hard every night until about 4:30 am in order to do this. But our media team didn't listen to our request even when all the other team members were with us on this. Last day on my first job where I stayed for a year. I really enjoyed it, loved the team, we were always laughing and making jokes, even in the worst moments.
Had a leader who became a friend, I made some good friends in there.
But I was really unmotivated as a dev, we maintained a really old and complex software, with a poor infrastructure for the dev team.
The manager was a great guy, but couldn't handle much pressure, saw him about 3-4 times quarreling with someone when he should be talking with the team to solve the problem.
But as I said, he is a great guy.
Today the whole team will be making a happy hour as my farewell party. I love this guys.
After that, on monday, I'll be joining a new company, working with a whole new stack, studying a lot for this new challenge.3 -

One enterprise (Genexus, a big enterprise) I would join the I+D team, good salary, EXCELLENT work place, and 2hs of travel from home.
The other enterprise (InnovaAge, a little but powerful enterprise in grow) I would join as trainee / junior developer who helps in the development team and I would constantly learn to become like my teammates, same salary than Genexus, good work place, and 1.5he of travel from home.
Same working hours amount and same salary but InnovaAge have the GREAT advantage of be near from my University, Genexus is TOO far from there.

I just got an offer to transfer to a better uni course!
I just finished my first year of "Computer Applications" which is kind of like computer science with software engineering mixed together. Because of the grades I got (1st class honours) I got an offer to transfer to a more practical course that focuses on team work, testing, agile etc. Needless to say, today is a pretty good day -

XYZ is our office boy. He completed his BSc IT from 3rd Grade college due to family condition and lack of knowledge, he has to work as an office boy.
So my team decided to teach him web development. We are starting it from very basic. We get total 1:30 hours of a lunch+snack's break so each one of us will give 1-day to teach him but It is not free. We will need good coffee in this deal. Our MD like this idea and promised us that once we gave him a green signal. He can do his first internship here. -
The ones I have now! I have a team of great people I'm working with. We get good work done and have alot of laughs. And since we work for a huge fortune 500 company, we have plenty of people in the enterprise to complain to each other about!

My Teamleader is such a dick, he has mental and isn't able to act as a normal human being. The year started with his disappointment that we didn't worked for the company during the holidays! Sorry, but my family has higher priority than the company, especially during the jolly days, you lonely nerd without any interest beside sitting in front of your computer all day long.
He managed to get me thinking about moving to another company. I need the harmony in the team and won't fight every single fucking day. I noticed that I get very nervous when he enters the room. Everyone in the team is hating to discuss things with him because he knows it better.
The problem is that we're a small team with big responsibilities for each developer. Loosing one team member is quite hard to compensate.
Should I still try move? I guess the harmony with all your teammates is evenly important as it's in a good relationship, right?4 -
During the company's Xmas event, we were off-site at a place that does events to do a team-building event followed by dinner party.
An error report came up, it wasn't a showstopper, but it was fairly serious, and the perfect excuse to sit out the BS improv team-building exercises that the powers that be thought would be a good idea to have.

At My current internship they treat an intern like an employee meaning having some great opportunities and rights. Having rights to ask anyone anything or question any decision or pointing that you are wrong.
Me: I don't want to work with this product.
Team lead: okay then there are some other options choose one of them.

So in my company there few small teams all with lead devs. One team is leaded by a girl who changed her profession. She's good at architecture/Dev stuff. But one thing she's terrible at is her leading role. She won't confront any bad behavior, she won't ask about any problem with the tasks. She won't ask her tram how long will the tasks take, so she puts her own valuations.
But the killer is she's whining everyday to the management about her team members. That they didn't do their tasks/don't want to cooperate. Never looking in the eyes even when she whines about a person in the same room.
Another thing is that our CTO is always doing her leading job, confronting team members, giving them reprimends. She lost all her authority by this. Nobody respects her. And after a slight note about her behavior you just gonna get a big talk with CTO and nothing will change.
Another thing is that, she Nevers connect with her team. Don't talk together, won't go with them for the coffee, never at the integration parties.
That CTO connection is another topic...
Oh and I'm by the next month I'm gonna be throwed into her team, so wish me luck...1 -

Senior dev on our team is concerned that we are raising standards above and beyond what we need to deliver the project.
For 6m+ this project has delivered little, but what there is is full of bugs that got through testing, and no standards (coding or otherwise) in place at all.
I hate dealing with people who preach “good enough” is fine but won’t accept they aren’t even close to doing “good enough”7 -

Been working for a client in different time zone. We are an offshore team of 18 ppl. Now we have 2 an hour long meetings daily, one is our internal and the other is with the client.
Today I mentioned that we are consuming 36 man hours daily just in the meetings and they were like, nah man, we are good. 🙄🙄 -
We had a meeting where all the devs on a large sprint team were told they must attend late that evening. The gist of that meeting was 'well done your all working hard and done some good work but we have over committed so work harder!" but they took an hour and a half to make the point.

Not the one with "leadership" or "strong ownership" skills and "team player" or "go getter" attitudes. This is euphemism for promoting someone just because you like them, or because of their charisma.
There are many other industries where charisma can play a role in leadership but software is not one of them. To build good software we need to be objective thinkers, not influencers.15 -

How do you tell people in your team their code is poorly written?
I am not an amazing developer, I lack experience of real world and don't have many finished products under my belt.
But I feel/think my code is well separated into separate classes, follows DRY well and is generally considered as following good practises.
However, the main Dev in this new small team which has been put together and I have been appointed to manage sees things differently.
He writes good functional code(it completes it main purpose) however it's all in the one program.cs file, lacks good comments and is just generally untidy :(
I kinda fell into this whole management thing and it's kinda new to me..
Maybe he just needs a bit of direction? I am going to be putting in a code styling guide
Any tips on managing a Dev team would be very much appreciated.

I like being an employee in product development team (rather than a consultant in a project) - we're exempt from reporting hours per project and making sure to stay within budget.
But on the downside it's frustrating to se how the org happily spends development time without considering we cost money. Just found out that one department ordered a campaign site that took 4 days for 2 devs to build.
It's now ended and revenue was only a few hundred bucks.
When I asked "Didn't we lose money on this project? Considering our salaries and the ~60hour dev time"
- "Oh no, we don't count the dev team as a cost! You already work here and would get paid no matter what" 😑

A peace of work to be done within 2 weeks for 3 devs
1 dev gets pulled off the team, the other decides now is a good time to take a 2 week holiday
So am the only one left and because the designs weren't even ready for the first week i only had a week to do it, i managed to finish it with some defect obviously, and testing oh yes the testing non, non whatsoever. Only test i had were snapshots. Other than that, nothing. So the demo seemed to please everyone and the whole team got praised for some gr8 work, work that was estimated for 3 but done by one and hah no testing...yet1 -
Guy blackmails the whole scrum team that he wants to work on a python user story, because he loves python and that's what he's good at.
Then in a week writes about a hundred lines of code, didn't hear about pep8 and complains about the speed of the code.
Used re.seach instead of re.match. In half an hour there is a 100x speed-up. He loves python.3 -
Gotta love the client forced deployments, making the team work all weekend. Having the push to live at 9pm at night and then with 10 minutes left cancelling the whole thing. With a lovely "good job but we are not ready yet"

Joined a startup, pretty happy with the company over-all so far truthfully. Secured a large project yesterday with higher billables so job security wise things are good. However... The project I've been working on is a mix of a Spring boot webapp and a game. Two separate applications that interact with each other.
Two teams. A home team, and an away team, plus.... 2 "AI's" to play against... Well.... whoever designed this "AI" designed it so they can only ever play as the away team. Why... every function, every method, every bit of logic is coded around what "Half" of the inning it is.... Now I had the bright idea of picking up the hardest task on the ticket list, of making these AI's be able to play as the home team.
WHAT A TASK, and to make things worse. Instead of using some kind of proper inheritance with actual structure, we have TWO COPY AND PASTED AIs where the other has more hard-coded team sided logic that needs to ALSO be adapted.

The craze to be a developer in top product companies has literally worn off for me in the past few months since I am working from home.
Like if I have to continue this WFH lifestyle it literally won't matter if I am working for a top product company or a startup...
The priority has shifted towards
1. A good team
2. A well-natured and polite manager
3. A flexible working culture which is better suited for remote work
4. And obviously a good salary🤑5 -

Recently some changes were announced that a developer was promoted as the engineering manager and the second one as a team leader.

One of my seniors is leaving the team. Honestly, I did not talk about personal stuff with him but during this lockdown, he was the only one whom I talked to this much. My most projects are with him, so in the team I kind of only know him. And now he is leaving, I feel so heavy.
I was anyway feeling no interest in my work, and now this, I really don't want to work at all. I don't want to be in this team, really without his guidance I can't do good. And this reminds me now I don't have anyone in the team to guide me. It's the same feeling as you get old and now no one to support you and you need to support yourself and slowly others. It's frightening.
On a good note, I hope things will turn out to be good for him, he's a nice person after all :) Everyone respected him, and he was trusted so much.2 -
Everything was good. We were a very sophisticated agile team. We knew our work very well and we were proud of it. Every new feature was implemented in matters of hours. Everyone happy. Me, other developers, managers, customers. Until the other team felt a bit bored and decided to build a New Deploy System!

To my review of 2021 ... a good lesson was learned.
I was doing so much for my company.. late night workings.. team handling.. client handline.. to name a few.. But in december they broke my heart.. Altough after little negotiation I was able to get a good package but somehow I Realized this is the time to switch.
But am at good position in my current company so I just cant go away for few pennies. I have to check for company's culture.. my tech stack.. etc too..
But I am determined to get a good job and packge with Challeging tech stack in 2022.

I did not feel good last week due to my vaccine. I really don't know what happened what even after a week of it, I feel week and dizzy.
I couldn't work at all due to all this, and now the senior from my team is indirectly saying that this project is slow. I know it is slow because I couldn't work without getting 13 hours of sleep.
I am scared. I think I do not the element of good developer. I am trying my best though.
But whenever I get these kind of remarks I fail to do even the easiest thing possible.7 -
Can someone explain to me the need of a "technical management"? I know my question is naive, but try to explain it like to kindergarten kid.
Case 1. When team is good, and has a good tech leader(s) then the software director/manager makes more harm with his silly ideas, pompous cliche "calls to arms" etc.
Case 2. On the other hand, when software team is shit, it means that the management is responsible for assembling such team. Then it further means that they can't distinguish impostors from really good talents, which leads to bad quality, missed deliveries, bugs, frustrations, etc.
I saw many times when good technical lead (aka architect, staff, principal) made a positive difference. But I NEVER EVER saw that things were bad and "manager/director" made a positive change. This concept is soooo flawed....

Question for leads...
Have you found that it's possible to have a balanced leadership style instead of ruling with an iron fist?
Let me explain what I mean.
There's always going to be room for improvement, there's going to be at least the occasional issue that happens, etc.
As a lead, your job is to not have issues happen and to have the team work effectively.
Now, for me, my goal was to have a balanced style in the sense that if there's a small issue or small room for improvement, but the team is already stressed, I take the heat for it if necessary and let them relax so they're not stressed and they can focus on the bigger things.
For medium improvements, I essentially put it to the vote so the team can have their say in whether they agree with the proposal on improvement.
And so on, idea being to have a balance between "Do what I tell you" and "do whatever you want".
However, I have found that doing so does essentially nothing to improve team morale and team cohesion. Any thing that needs doing and I force them into it, any thing I don't protect them from, any thing they don't agree with will still manifest as problems in the team, a single "you have to do this" will make them complain about the leadership style being "force to implement".
Being completely hands off and essentially not a lead, just basically a support dev more or less, is not what I'm really looking for, but also isn't good for a team that does genuinely have things that need to improve (stupid errors not being caught in dev OR review, system not being fully testable because of external dependencies that are not really necessary for tests, etc).
So the only option I see there is simply ruling with an iron fist and leaning into being that hated lead that just forcea you to do things and "doesn't care about you".
I've already stepped down from this lead position because I don't want to be that guy, but if I'm looking for another position I'm curious if this is just universal or hae you guys found that it IS possible to have a "good team" where you can be adults and discuss things as a team and improve as a team?6 -
How can some developers take a full remote position when they work in a team?
I really appreciate the in real life contact with my team members, to discuss code, solve brain cracking problems together, doing peer programming etc
The days I have worked at home were good for focusing at my own tasks but I missed the team feeling.
Sure with tools you can share screens, collab on code via liveshare in vscode, use Skype to talk and what not but there is no random coworker passing by who takes a look what your doing and helps u with a problem that he knows how to fix

I am an average Dev who is striving to improve. I currently work in a setting where I have the most experience in a corporate setting. I came from a very disciplined team where I had a great mentor. Now I am in a looser team with very bright people who don't have that experience. They are mainly JavaScript devs without much production experience. We are working in .net but they don't like working with back end code or databases. This is a 3 month contract. I want to do a good job. I have made enemies in the past and I just want to leave on a good note.

Should I just tell my manager that being the most expensive developer on the team, it would be a good idea to just let me do what I'm supposed to be doing and not spending all my time involved in bs meetings that don't need me, other then because I'm part of the team, or fixing issues I didn't cause and have no idea about the app that causes it?

Used to get really mad at the testing team every time before a production deploy. They only tested the developments that same day, and still I wasn't sure they did a good job. Sometimes they asked for an extra "feature", so we entered into speed-coding mode. Got used to it.1

So I have a pretty decent job on a more than good wage working for a larger company... I have my own team and get a good bit of responsibility with the role..... But the culture outside of my team is non existent....business is a mess and everything is a war to get anything done... I wish I could just take my team and do my own thing.... So.....
An old colleague and a great friend wants us to do our own thing... The money looks good... There is great demand... She is already doing it and making great money and turning down work and wants an equal partner in the business idea.. Equal equity split...
.... Why am I so worried about leaving a job I don't really have much loyalty too? Ironically the friend wanting me to go do our own thing with hired me here and got me promoted!
I want to go do it but something is keeping me here and I don't know what.... Am I just making excuses not to go?

Today I escape from the clutches of the legacy iOS project ive been stuck in for about a year and a half.
Starting on a new team, totally different stack (TypeScript/Angular).
Its bad that what makes me happiest is that we have unit tests, something thats been missing from my life for so long now. I might actually get to do TDD now.

I learned React.js, and got into MobX team doing open source.
I learned ClojureScript and RoR and feel comfortable with them.

How do you do your CI/CD pipeline? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Just wondering how the tests and deployment usually runs. Is it on a per team basis? Is it the whole release getting deployed to Test many times per day? What happens if too many automated tests fail or there is not enough coverage, does it abort the deployment? If so, how can every team get delayed by every issue - is that actually a good policy?
My pipeline is very slow and requires a team of 12 people working in shifts to complete it. I’m not an expert but I know it does a lot of steps and never completes without manual intervention. I would like to help but I’m not sure how bad it is.3 -

I've been a freelance for almost 20 years, so I had the ability to choose my tech and architecture. Now that I'm leading a team, I'm finally needing to fight with other developers to convince them to actually use what was the scientific state of the art 20 years ago, because our field is so disconnected from science and good practices…
The upside is that I get to teach that state of the art to my team members.
I'll see in a year if it's more thrilling or tiring. -

It was on my last job before the one here. I met one of the other programmers in the team and it was an instant click. Really liked this dude. His name was Adam, he was older than me and we spent most of our time talking about code and listening to music (he was a hardcore Caifanes fan, which is one of the greatest Mexican rock bands ever) and he would show me the oldschool tech he used to work with. He was really cool and we still talk all the time :) another would be on a conference my current job sent me and my team to (all of my team are my friends as well) but we got to meet tons of cool people and we still talk to most of them.

I am an intern and was put into a fresh project to do node back end. They didn't really give me any supervisor because the company lacks employees and has too many projects, and they were afraid I won't do myself. I was assigned to a front end oriented colleague to make a team, and cooperation with him is really demanding. After a month, a company that outsourced for us did a complex code review and said we wrote some darn good code, and they were said we are both mids (while colleague is a fresh Junior with an intern by his side). Damn it felt good :)
And also our pair is said to be the only Dev team in the whole company that can call client for itself, without PM or any host of the call, as others, with a lot of experience, need to be guided through each call :D -
I joined a startup and suddenly all I thought I know was disappearing and a very complex creature fell into my laps asking me to code it. Then there’s these trello cards asking me to pick them up and start solving.
Well, first, no idea how the whole app is structured.
Good thing, have a supportive team for sure. -
Tried to explain to the department lead that having devs spend more time documenting what we spend time on, asking for permissions to do anything doesn't make the project go faster.
Leads might feel good about having better overview for themselves, but in reality you just slowed down, demotivated and annoy the entire team of people doing the actual work. Noone wants to or will do overtime because we have to ask for permission first. And you took away one good dev to spend his entire days in meetings instead of actually doing any real work on the project.

Small start-up story:
The company hired independent foreign devs. The tech lead developer has decided to leave (due to some disputes with the boss(es)). The rest of his team are subcontractors/other independent devs that are good friends with the lead dev. We also recently adopted a 'scrum' which they really dislike.
So I guess there is a small change we will have a back-end team in the near future.2 -

So I've been working on a project that has gone to shit, scope isn't clear and deadline is too tight. Developers get dropped into the team to "make it work"
Currently I think it is unavailable to succeed within the deadline. But this got me thinking, how do you actually save such a project? Could a good project lead save a chaotic project? If so... How? (And more importantly to me, how does one become a good project lead, do I need 10+ years of programming experience?) -

How do I create a Collab..
Well, I'm looking to form a team of 2 - 4 members. We will be devoted to learning machine learning through books, Kaggle, self assignments and various group discussions and pair programming. We will form a group name, open a GitHub account and upload our projects there. Am looking up to extending it to build projects together. This can also help us build our portfolios.
There are no tight requirements. But some good programming skills especially in Python will be great and a good understanding of high school math. We will be learning together.3 -

so a good thing happened. after struggling with our current TL for whole last year, one SSE was promoted to TL and the team got split into 2. now our team has the new TL which is strict but a much more responsible lead and a good friend.
and in a striking change of culture, she has askedus to define our own KPIs rather than using the pre default KPIs. our predefined KPIs were weird :

Lately I've had to write a bunch of CLI tools for repetitive tasks that any team member might run. I've been using normal bash for this, and it's great, but it feels a bit cumbersome when you have to do a lot of prompts and progress indicators. What other language would you suggest? GO would seem like a good candidate.9

Good company refuced my contracting service. Fuck that. And reasons do not sound good to tell - like team did not want me anymore, maybe too dificult project, I am not independent enough, too many fixes after code reviews. This sucks that I do not know how to fix those parts, I have tried. And about too dificult project - how can I do better on dificult projects, I am not sure. There are projects of similar dificulty in most companies. And if projects would be easy, then everyone does that and reward would be small.18

So I joined this amazing team at a pretty good company. They're solving some interesting problems and improving the company's product. I'd been very motivated working with them from the start.
A few weeks ago the company announced they'd be allocating more resources for sales related teams and turns out my team is one that's gonna be gutted from 7 to 3 devs.
I've been extremely demotivated since I just left a fintech cause I found the space extremely boring. Haven't been able to work, finish tasks etc knowing I'm gonna go back to something I know I don't enjoy.
Not sure if I should leave, just slack off or what since the pay is really good and I've only been here half a year. There was also a small singing bonus I'd have to return.
