Introducing avatar pets & a new way to unlock avatar items! Pets include cats, dogs, birds and tigers. We know getting all those ++'s can take some time, so while all avatar items are just as reachable for free by earning ++'s from rants and comments, we now allow items to be purchased in-app based on the difference in ++'s you have to the ++ unlock value of the item. (To purchase, you'll need the latest app version)
Paying for avatar items helps us keep the devRant servers up and running and also is extra motivation to add more fun avatar items. If you have any questions or find a bug, please let me or @dfox know. Happy ranting!38 -
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for waiting for this new release of avatar items! We have new pets, new computers, new eye wear, some fun shirts and a special treat for our #1 ranter @linuxxx. The required ++ pts for these are a little higher than normal to reward the dedicated people who have helped support and build this community over the last few years. Thank you all!33

Dear Steam,
Is it possible to send ONE FUCKING E-MAIL for the "items on my wish list that are on sale", instead of sending 4738258382 EMAILS FOR EVERY SINGLE ONE LIKE COMPLETE FUCKING MORONS?!?!6 -
Historically, tattoo artists would operate free of charge on women's breasts. This was an attractive offer for both sides, and spawned the phrase "tit for tat", which now represents two sides of an argument offering items of equal value.
This is a fact I just made up, like "Java runs on 4 billion devices"9 -

A sidebar.
Literally just a sidebar.
And yes, this was in Hell.
Its code was spread across at least 40 files, and it used a bunch of freaking global variables to unfurl accordion sections, hide other sections/items, highlight the active item, etc. These were set (and unset!) in controller actions, so if you didn’t unset one, it remained open and highlighted until another action unset it.
Some of the global variable checks (and permissions checks) were done in the individual views, some outside of the `render` statements that include them. Some of them inherited variables from the parent, some from the controller, some from globals. Getting a view to work was trial and error. Oh, and some had their own inline css, some used css classes.
Subsections were separate views, so were some individual items, both sometimes rendered using shared templates, and all of the views and templates had the exact. same. filename. (They were located in different directories, and thus located automagically via implicit relative paths.) So, it was a virtually endless parade of`render partial => “sidebar”`. Which file does that point to? Good luck figuring it out!
Also, comments in several places said adding a new section required a database migration. I never did figure out why.
Anyway, I discovered this because I had an innocuous-sounding ticket to rearrange the sidebar, group some sections/items under different permissions, move some items to another menu, and nest some others differently.
It took me two bloody weeks, and this was when I was extremely productive every day.
Afterward, I was so disgusted by it that I took a day and removed every trace of the sidebar I could find, and rewrote it. I defined the sidebar in a hash, and wrote a simple recursive builder to generate the markup. It supported optional icons, n-level nesting, automatic highlighting of the current item and all parent nodes, compound and inherited permissions, wrapping of long names, hover and unfurl animations, etc. Took me a couple hundred lines of Ruby at the most, plus about the same of css.
Felt so good to remove that blight.5 -
I saw a commit with suspicious code days ago. After warning my immediate superior he ignored me and yesterday proceeded to deploy.
Now we have items in cache for days instead of minutes. I guess next time he will listen to me.4 -
This is my work desktop. Since I'm working in a Japanese office, they're very specific about making sure your workspace is clean and tidy at all times. Also they expect you to have very little to no personal items on your workspace.

CHILD: But how can Santa deliver toys to every little boy and girl on his list in one night?
MEH: (laughs) It's quite simple. The items on Santa's list are called blocks, and each block in his "blockchain" typically contains a hash pointer, a timestamp, and transaction data...6 -

Hey @dfox and @trogus, was wondering, are there any plans for items higher than 20K upvotes? I'm at more than 120K now and I'd like a new item and also maybe something to work towards :)
Also, I'm just asking/wondering, I know what a busy life is. This is nothing more than a question, not demanding anything! (I'm deffo not in the position to demand anything)
Thanks!24 -

How come the cat pet is on the floor?
From my experience they should be sleeping on the keyboard or sitting on top of the mouse.
@dfox, @trogus: I would suggest swapping this around. The cat should be on the desk all other items should be on the floor. I feel this would more accurately depict typical cat ownership.5 -
When management produces a list of priorities but every item on the list is #1 priority. So some items are in BOLD to signify their even greater priority over other priorities.14

Currently in the middle of quarterly planning (its been fun so far). Needs to be signed off by business today.
- My team has ~25 man weeks available in terms of capacity.
- Looking at only priority 0 tasks, last night we calculated the ask from product stands at 64.
- Including P1's, P2's etc. its well over 100 man weeks.
- Email was sent around from business with a list of tasks, asking which can be dropped, de-scoped etc.
Product (non technical) response this morning:
- This one can't take 2 weeks, its not that complicated.
- This one needs to stay, It was originally a Q1 task.
- Can we make this one smaller? (currently only a 3 week task)
- 14 comments on other teams items.
<extreme-sarcasm>
... ah perfect, that cut down the items by less than half. We are now ready for the deadline in 4 hours to have all this signed off on. Great job everyone. Thanks for all the insightful discussions. Go team!

The robotics proffessor has offered me :
1- joining uni's robotics team
2- joining the startup team
I then asked if I can take both of them and he said this is not recommanded.
So what do you think?
Whick of the 3 items (3- none) fits best?10 -
client: We need a system that will monitor the items from warehouse X from a distant location

us: ...
we don't shit money to handle the costs given that we're still starting out our business. Fts.4 -
I once had to make a shitty canvas game as part of a marketing campaign when I worked for an agency, for fuck only knows what. You dragged a shopping trolley back and forth in an aisle, and got points for catching items that fell from the top.
The initial round of feedback had the complaint that sometimes players weren't receiving points for items. I spent a night playing this senseless game over and over, but I never failed to get the points for an item. I was pretty confident that it worked, it wasn't like the logic was complex, so I sent it over.
Second round of feedback had the same complaint. They were getting quite annoyed by it, said that it was a bad user experience. Again, I could not reproduce it at all: the game was an equally tedious waste of life on every device I tried it on.
In exasperation, I asked the sales guy whose pitch it had been to get me a video or a more detailed report. The client was quite arsey, as they saw it, at having to do bug-fixing for us, but they did agree.
Anyway, it transpired that they were angry that players were not receiving the points for the items they *failed* to catch. The way they saw it, the game wouldn't be fun if you were punished for not catching items - so they wanted the player to get ten points for every item on screen, regardless or not of whether they caught it in their trolley. Of course, I thought. Silly me.
I was actually quite impressed at how a marketing department could accidentally undermine the very notion of a game whilst seeking to make one more fun.8 -

Java's shitshow, or why I'll never like java, the language:
The fact that you cannot read the length of an iterable at any point in time without iterating through it. Did I just read this from DB? Yes, I did. Do I know how many items I read? No. Why? Because fuck the designers of this shit language and all its shitty third-party libraries. 😠😠😠18 -
When a shitty website does a bad job at preventing behavior by disabling client-side items (such as right click), I take it as a challenge, and usually do everything they don't want me to, simply out of spite.1

Typos kill, kids! And deploying to production.
Instead of "for item in items" in my script, I accidentally did "for items in items". Thus, an exponential loop has been entering things into the database for the past few hours before I found the place to fix it.
By the way, this runs on cron every minute. So there are processes still running exponentially right now, possibly 180+.
Yeah, I'm setting up a a test server instead now.11 -
Paraphrased with imaginary ending:
Me: Ok so this X will never be more than Y items and not more than one pages?
Person: Yes. it won't be more than Y items and never more than one page.
Me: If this is always Y items or less and not more than one page, I can hammer this out quick then. If it is more than that it will take much longer to complete.
Person: Awesome!!!
-later-
Person: OK here's the template for Y x10 items and multiple pages.
Me: Oh I'm sorry, we're going to have to stop working on this. I thought you actually gave a fuck about this 'important' project and that you had deadlines you cared about, but apparently not enough to participate in this conversation with any level of intellectual honesty. Please fuck off now while I go work on more productive tasks....4 -

I like coding in a way that anyonr who comes into my code base can understand whats going on. That way more people can maintain the code base.

So, I got a ticket to make a page using a given wireframe that had submit buttons and other buttons to add more items in the wireframe.

I really fucking hate somebody asking me to implement a scammy function on a shop/marketplace like "if theres 54% items left, put up a red label that says almost sold out", it works, it drives sales, and they will just find someone else to do it, if its not me, but its such a fucking dirty and ugly way of making people buy your own sold shit more than actual legitimate sellers (that already pay like 25% off of sold items) in the same category, since the shop/marketplace allows for other sellers to sell their stuff on there too, but those tricks don't apply to them, only after they cash into the "booster" program that costs almost 150$ a month, disgusting.10

Gotta love product owners that don't seem to understand agile.
We delivered the set number of items in the sprint we committed to plus a little extra polish. During the last day of the sprint we're spending the time to push all our work to UAT do he can actually perform acceptance testing...

Had to explain it to him at least 5 times during the day.3 -
A team at school spent 3-4months on an eStore web app, for selling items. The title was "Securing your eStore".
When they were done with their presentation, the examinator asked: "But... You haven't said a thing about the security part."
"Oh, sure we did, as we showed you, we added validation on the email address and credit card text fields etc. If you press the Pay button here, you will get an alert()-dialog telling you which fields are invalid..."2 -

Do you guys drop the S from your variable names? I am constantly in a dilemma as to what makes more sense.
For example a SQL Table:
Books
----------
BookID
BookName
....
---------
OR
Book
---------
BookID
BookName
.....
---------
Or even in a language like C# or JavaScript:
const BOOKS
var books
let books
or
const BOOK
var book
let book
Even if you have multiple items in that variable/table it seems very redundant to ever have the s.
What do you guys think? Any input appreciated!
Happy coding!24 -
Product Owner keeps demanding developers do items outside of Sprint, deleted story points to get extra items in, signs off holiday for my staff, even hired some unqualified developers, etc. for my team (I'm the Dev Manager). I'm blessed to report into the PMO who backs up the Product Owner, in front my own reports, meaning I have no authority. What would you do?
PMO has decided that if we drag items from Sprint to Backlog when they reach SIT, we have more space for Dev items in the Sprint :-| Though he expects developers to actually do the SIT work, including writing the SIT tests :-|2 -

A checkout application where, in the confirmation screen, everything (amount, references, currency, quantity of items, etc.) was sent to the client as a form, and they submitted this form to confirm.
...but there was no verification on any of the above. So any of the above could be changed and it'd collect whatever funds, and order whatever items, with whatever references you gave it.
This wasn't a major player in the space, but was big enough that most people would likely have heard of at least some companies using it. It's still being actively used today, and I can near guarantee not all the flaws have been fixed.1 -

I am the old famous kiddy here, who just came back days before school exam starts^^
Just to say, I want to ask you all, is it ethical(?) to release a hacking/cheating creation tool for games for educational™ purposes?
I have been making a cheat creation tool called Mysterium, but I am not sure where to use it. I made cheats for some big title games, and reported them to the developers, patched, and got some in game items in return....
Long story short, is it okay to release to the public, or should i release this product to game developers?
Sincerely,
A kid who made cheats since he can't play games well and wanted to get some free items4 -
Devops is an HR/management wank-word.

So I am a Junior Dev in this small company. We have different tasks for the current sprint so I don't care what my teammates are doing. Then came the integration of our works, where a Mid Dev was assigned to create a Carting/Basket service. As we are integrating, I noticed that we are passing data to his service as is. We are passing the price, item name, etc. on his API. I asked him why the fuck are we not passing the IDs of the items instead. He didn't understand what I'm saying and instead defended his work. I showed him how I was able to manipulate the total amount of items I added to cart. He wasted almost 6 days of developing. Ughh.3

When it comes to the idea of programming and magic, or the comparison between software developers/engineers, computer scientists etc as magicians or wizards, nothing brings the idea much more close to hearth than the C programming language.
A while ago I read the R.A Salvatore books concerning Drizzt, the dark elf. I loved the books, have not continued reading them but I remember them vividly. There was one book in which a human magician came about wielding extremely explosive magic, humans were capable of channeling large amounts of it through explosive and unwieldly ends.
This is the same feeling I get from C
Consider:
int items[] = {1, 2, 3};
printf("Third : %i\n", 3[items]);
and fuck me if shit like the above is not dangerous, it makes sense, arrays have the first items of it server as the pointer address to a first element, doing the above operation returns the third element of the array of 3. But holy shit if I don't think this is dangerous and interesting as fuck
there are many more examples I have that I am finding through me fucking around with: language development (compiler, interpreter), kernel programming as well as net sec. C is the most powerful and devastating thing we have in our hands indeed.7 -
Starting to get really hyped about how my book is progressing, thinking about starting to put some promotional items and desk tat together...
Oh lord I'm a better author than a dev, someone slap me...

So today I published my very first VS Code extension! 😁 I don't think anyone but me will think it's useful but it saves me a few seconds every time I change something in my code and I want to test it. Just hit a button in VS Code an and ta da! The project is compiled and running!

This weekend I was working on a fun hobby project with a friend of mine. While he was modeling items for the game I started with a dungeon generator.
This morning I got stuck at a bug which took me more than 12 hours and 4 developers to fix. In the end I found the issue. I was checking
If y > arraySize && somethingElse
DoSomething();
It had to be:
If y < arraySize && somethingElse
DoSomething();
After I changed that everything worked without issues... Day well spent... -
My GOTG pop figures are my favorite items on my desk. Whenever I have a bad day at work, I make their heads move and that cheers me up :P Drax is missing though2

Do I know how to use flex? Mostly.
Do I know how to center a div inside a flex? Yes.
Do I know if I need to use align-items or justify-content for it? Absolutely not.13 -
Currently working on an inventory system. I have main, Side, local and premium items. And I also have inventory slot lists for each type. My Lists are called:

I'm playing a PC game, Yakuza 0, for passing some free time. It's an action game so I get to fight and stuff.
In the latest mission, I'm supposed to run to the supermarkets (different ones too) and get 5 items for 5 NPCs to unlock the story progression.
I'm basically running errands for 5 NPCs.
What the fuck am I doing with my life3 -
English is killing me here, so I'm going to crowd source a label here.
Best one wins a virtual hug 🤗
So, I need a customer facing word or words that doesn't sound like I gave up and just said "parent / related order"
Context being that a customer makes a purchase, but then comes back and purchases additional items in relation to the previous order on a seperate order.
I need a word!!31 -
IBM's Urban Code Deploy.
Had to use it at a previous role. It is one of the worst packages. The Web based ui is a terrible, confusing mess.
For example, there are two levels of menus. Depending on which page you are viewing, you would have two menu items with the same label that do totally different things. Also you can set filters, but it doesn't remember them, so you have to recreate them everytime (they're not stored in the url or anything useful like that).2 -
What the Fun Javascript!!!
'==' in Javascript is supposed to do type conversions, before comparing the two items.
Then...!!7 -
Dear X. There's an obvious error with the way you're merging arrays; instead of conditionally adding items to the existing array, each condition overrides any items added by the previous conditions, which is clearly not the desired behaviour. I'd love to add a test to illustrate this behaviour, but you're not using them. I'd also love to create a simple pull request, but for some fucking reason you're using the worst possible version control system so I can't do that. I've submitted a support ticket along with all the code needed to fix this silly mistake, but apparently you either don't understand 2 lines of your own fucking code, or you didn't even bother looking at it before posting a shitty generic reply about "needing more information". There is no such thing as more information. There are two IFs, and they are supposed to add items to the array, not override any previous items. It's written in your own comments, and it's pretty obvious from the way the rest of the function merges those items.
Also, use a fucking linter, your code is a mess.7 -
Fucking love it when the windows copy/move dialog gets stuck at 100% with 0 items remaining and I can't get rid of the damn window for 20 seconds.

How did we normalize Project Managers (non-technical scumbags who literally just make excel sheets and track work items) yelling at Developers (they literally get everything done).
Imagine having PMs yelling at surgeons for not removing a tumor fast enough or something.5 -
I don't think it could be more .net core than this: Several parts of the application ended up failing because of a too long URL. For example we used a List to store selected items in an array and they each looked like this:
&model.selectedIds[n]=true
The server side made more sense but we were running late with the project so we just went with it and hoped no one would use this feature. -
Aha, more c++ knowledge. An implementation of a List (already provided by vector).
Lots of learning here, including use of the placement new operator, which is required for containers like this because if you just use the normal new operator, the buffer will construct a million items.
Also, the buffer is of type char*, not of type T, which really confused me in the beginning.
Lastly, with placement new, you need to call destructors yourself.
Interesting stuff.1 -
Holy crap, just ran npm install on the vueJS webpack template. node_modules is 272.7mb with 21785 items :/6

my boss some months ago: so there is this new project, and we're planning to slowly fade in and gradually increase the time you guys work on this project
new pm last week: welcome to the project, you're now 100% allocated to the new project, that's your highest prio now
me: ...what about the other projects? they might have questions xD
pm: don't worry about that, dealing with that is not your job
my boss this week: yeah no, the other releases are most important for our company. the new project needs to be subordinated and has lower prio, at least lower prio than critical and highly prioritized bugs.
me: so.... who decides which items from which projects i shall prioritize higher than the new project and how much time i shall spend on them?
my boss: it is your job to talk to people, give them estimates and tell them how many items you can work on, so they can decide which items they pick
so basically i'm having the feeling that i need to manage myself here. it will be fun to attend the new project daily standups and tell the new pm all the time that i couldn't do anything because i had no time. anyone else with this experience? is this normal? actually i liked our new pm's attitude "dealing with that is not your job". i should have known it was too good to be true ^^'5 -
I specified a requirement where certain bits in a certain message shall be evaluated for certain items. The tester came up to me and talked some BS about how to guesstimate these bits by totally different bits. I said, look up the interface definition, the bits are there. Got an email, same BS. Tester was just too lazy to look it up. So I answered that message ID X has bits 60-63 for the four relevant items.
However, I carefully avoided telling him which bit was for which item so that he knew what it was, but I still forced him to look up the inter fucking face definition. -
I think one of the hardest part while making an RPG game is setting the prices of the shop items and determining the rewards you get from quests.

How do you folks handle your pagination at backend?
I was initially using skip and limit. But that is prone to error.
Then I thought about using last sent items id and using its created_at time and fetching rows/documents after that. But that too is prone to error ( more than one can have same timestamp) hence either having data repeats or data That gets missed.
What is your goto strategy for pagination?8 -
I‘d like to work more on my 2D game.
The idea is to make a mix of "Factorio" and "Knights and Merchants".
I’ve already got a decent basis with infinite terrain generation and units that collect resources and store them in containers as items.2 -
I had six items that I wanted to centre horizontally via CSS. Problem was that depending on the viewport width, the items could either take one, two, three or six lines. But the items broke to the next line like text so that e.g. the top line had five items and the second only one. What I wanted was three items each in this case.
Finally, I came up with a hack of media queries to make the parent container just so wide that six, three, two or one item would fit horizontally, and then centre the parent container with margin left/right auto.1 -
@dfox - I really like the swag store and all, but do you think you could come out with some unique/not-available-on-the-swag-store items for the big milestones?
It just adds to the allure imo!
Thanks for all that you both do!2 -

Going through my graduate program I have come to realize that there is more to A.I than just machine learning algorithms. As if ML was not complicated enough, we add more to it such as KRR and other topics that border on the areas of Cognitive Science, Boolean Algebra, Logic and even Philosophy and you know what? I dig it. I dig it because finding some of the information in the course that I am getting is damn near impossible to see in other items. Such is the case as a method for fucking signature unit propagation which afuckingparently was developed by one of my instructors(not complaining, just really fucking impressed)
The thing is, most of these items would normally have a parallel in software development that we use on our day to day basis, all of us, no matter if you do web, systems development, database development whatever, the general concepts are the same: you represent real world concepts, such as that of logic and knowledge in programatic/mathematical representations.
I am really amazed at the content of these items, I really am. I just wish for some clarification on ambiguity, seems like most things are left better if it where explained in a programmer's point of view. Most of the items that I have seen could have easily been summarized in a programmers logic if only they would have preferred to take the time to do it, and I get that there needs to be mathematical intuition formulated before anything, it is better sometimes to learn concepts from an outside point of view, a mathematical point of view, but shit is just strange sometimes.1 -
I don't care if you're a Senior Developer. You just make me look dumb adjusting to your needs of not normalizing your database queries.

I see Amazon taking a lot of flak and being called a monopoly, but they aren't. Sure, Amazon sells branded items, but the majority of items are sold by small mom-and-pop businesses that have access to markets that they would not have without Amazon. Case in point, I've ordered items that have come not just from the US, where in live, but Europe and Asia. I just ordered some 4711 cologne, and was sort of expecting that it would come from Germany. Nope, it's coming from a small seller in Japan. Amazon is a global equalizer that enables people from all over the world to sell to people from all over the world. The politicians messing with that are going to remove that ability, and we will all be the poorer for it. Maybe this is a rant after all.4

I have this irrational cringe every time that people say infinite when they actually mean unlimited. I hear and read it everywhere, multiple times per day. In English and in German.
"You can do this infinitely often"
"AI bots have infinite APM"
"The number of items you can store is infinite"
Aaaaargh! Stop it! It hurts! 😫22 -

Before I left my other company I was in the midst of finishing one project and I was ansious to finish everything to leave as a rockstar. Now, one of my js scripts brought a huge and long json response that had many nested items and arrays and whatnot. Instead of properly destructuring or finding a particular piece that went similarly to "status": "Verify input"(that was nested unser a shitload of items) i did the unspeakable......i stringified the whole object and just used indexOf.
I still feel guilty over it...but it works :P thing is, if it returns that it means that the user entered an invalid status into the app (it was an inventory application) but it works :P
Oh well. Mind you they thought it was going to take months and I finished in 1 week so yay. -
Time blocking my calendar with busy items so I can limit the amount of meetings PM's can invite me to. Works well and helps me stay of task.1

I don't get why the company where I work is pushing a new cloud platform to create website with.
So yesterday I dove in a website(that an intern made) to make a search and filter on some items.
I thought sure, just finished a website with a lot of search thingies and filters.
But this intern wrote 500 lines of code to just get items from an API endpoint. Dude really why??? Ok, your cool an all and you definitely have skills, but this is just ridiculous.
Burned an day on the piece of shit, while this is in an stupid cloud platform. Without even es6 to write JavaScript. I could have write the whole thing in react In just one day!!
Just work locally on your machine and put you code in a git repo. And deploy when finished. That how I like to work, but no this company wants to keep pushing this cloud platform.
For fucks sake, just let me code! And don't let me use vs or that stupid cloud platform.4 -
So Im taking over an project from an colleague. And it involves a lot of things from an external API. I cool with that, I enjoy working with APIs in general.
Let me explain it a bit more. I enjoy consuming APIs with frontend frameworks like reactjs and angularjs.
But my colleague had allready started some with consuming one of the endpoints.
He did it with ajax....for god sake. Are you serious?!?!?!!
Ajax calls??? Why ????
So I pointed out that we could use vuejs, we don't have to compile anything like with react or angular.
Things that we need to do are not that interesting nor big. Mostly getting items and maybe filter these items.
But he insisted on using Ajax because there wasn't that must time to use fancy frontend frameworks.5 -
I often dream that I discovered a rare edge case in reality that can lead to a crash if corrupted people create any object together. Corrupted state is infectious but due to caching and lazy copying strategies you mainly spread it to previous owners of items you infect. Also I can't edit the code to fix the issue because I'd have to recompile and our world is an in-memory artifact of the current execution.1

The code is not as beautiful as it can be, but it's a truly one-off thing that can be deleted afterwards, so it doesn't matter :)2 -

I have a question that my friend and I can't work out an answer for. Is a list of length 0 sorted?
A list of length 1 is sorted so you'd expect this to be sorted but then there's no items to be sorted. But does this mean it it sorted???3 -
As a tech lead i sometimes find it very hard to defend developers for no fault of theirs.
Management is completely incapable of noticing hard data like git logs or action items updated on an excel and seems to have an idea that the devs are incompetent , but the ba that sets impossible goals and crap business documentation is competent.
Should i just let the project and juniors burn.2 -

I want to share a small model in my iOS app. Now on android I'd do with with ViewModelProviders, but on iOS I'm going with SharedDataContainer which is basically a singleton class that store key value data.
Is there any better approach? Data will not be bigger than 10 list items with guid (key) and int (value)
However; when I have big data I do cache on disk or hello OOM exceptions (or whatever they call that bitch on iOS) -

How many layers of increasingly verbose macros generating calls to each other is acceptable in Rust? I have to choose between 2 and 3 but IMO the 3 macro setup is nicer because it allows shit like walking a list, windowing the items and skipping the last to be separated from the actual things that are being generated.4

Iconless menus – another effect of the toxic minimalism trend. Icons in menus such as the mobile web browser and device settings help finding items faster!
In 2014, Samsung removed icons from the upper right menu of their mobile Internet browser. At some point, roughly 2017, they realized it was a bad idea and brought them back. Could've told ya that earlier. 😁5 -
Programming is like religion.
- you are making sombody to obey your will
- you have limited amount of resources (churches, processors, RAM, holy items)
- when you torture it, usually it will comply but not in way you are expecting
- smashing nail with hammer is not good idea (you can run out of resources again. Getting new CPU is costly as same as getting new believer)
So, who's in for new Church of Unhandled Exception?1 -

I’ve abandoned the classic for loop from my tool belt for quite a long time now. The vast majority of the code is functional.
But today I’ve encountered a problem where I’m considering to use the imperative for loop again because I can’t come up with a good functional approach.
Maybe you guys have an idea.
I have a list of items and I want to make a new list which is like the original list, but it has extra items in between of some other items.
The tricky part is that there is a condition that needs to be checked for each pair of items to determine if the new item should be inserted in between. Otherwise nothing should be inserted.61 -

Me (to peer): I counted all of the items in the list, and if the list count is zero, we branch to this logic.

The objective c stdlib is pretty cool, it's what backs the swift stdlib on mac. The collection classes dynamically switch backend depending on size and expected performance characteristics. EG a set of 3 items is faster to linearly search a vector, so it'll switch that out.

I finally created a kotlin android app for a simple project idea, just personal usage. Beginner level. Quite a good and bad experience.
Functionality is done, just sucks with UI, as I'm not proficient enough with styling on android.
The result is a predefined purple action bar at the top, an almost white text section right below it with *very* light-grey textview descriptions (you can guess how visible they are on my phone...). Center is a big recyclerview, which in android studio has white background with dark grey text items, yet is black on my phone with white text items. At the bottom 3 text inputs and a centered purple "add" button.
... It's a mess as long as you don't know how to design and style on android studio.2 -

Is GraphQL worth it? It promisses to keep some load away from backend programmers but what about this scenario:
There's a list of items with scroll load/infinite scroll. There can be several filters as well as the Option to change the ordering of the list items.
With "traditional" REST, I'll hit the DB with one request, get the data in the right order to the backend, might itterate over it once to add additional information, cache the result in Redis/Memcache and send it off.
Using GraphQL, the frontend has to load all entries first, sort them in JS (which probably is slow on mobile devices), and then display it. No matter how "expensive" the query is, there's no caching.
Is that about it? Did I get something backwards?2 -
Ebay is a huge pile of freshly juiced garbage.
Their settings menu looks like its from 2005. And when it looks halfway decent the CSS doesnt load cause you have do not track enabled.
If you go to write their support, it returns an unexpected error.
when you use the shopping cart the number of items you have in it is not the same as the number it says that you have in it. And when you want to checkout that cart, not all items show up on the payment screen. Despite the item being shippable.
And the worst thing of them all: IF YOU THEN CHECK OUT ALL THESE ITEMS IT MAKES AN INDIVIDUAL TRANSACTION FOR EACH ONE. THUS THE FRAUD DETECTION OF THE CARD BLOCKS THE CARD, CAUSE TOO MANY TRANSACTIONS HAPPEND AT ONCE!2 -
Co-worker with 20 years of "computer" experience, and another that's a graphic designer who has never used Illustrator make suggestions to the owner about what's best for the site... claims the problems he is having with Pricing wouldn't happen if he wasn't using WooCommerce, because "it's really only good for small sites, not sites with 3000 items or more..."
I died a little inside from laughing, as the problems are coming from a custom plugin created by his dev!

In Kotlin or Java, I have a list of items that have an ID property. This list is generated based on another list. Now I get a List of mentioned list items and I want to select all items in the parent list, selecting by ID equality.
Is there a more elegant way than just iterating the parent lost for each derived item? Thank you :)5 -
Back in college I was writing a parser for a personal project in python. I was adding nodes to a set, but somewhere down the pipeline, some of the items I added to this set mysteriously disappeared!
I never removed anything from this set, nor did I replace it, so it baffled me that I couldn't find some items in the set.
It turned out the problem was I updated fields in these nodes that were used for taking the node's __hash__, which would prevent them from being found in the set

That moment you update your ui library, to find out this update has a small align-items css prop that breaks every form on every page.... imagine the impression when you see it all broken... priceless

It's now 3am and this issue has been keeping me up for inner an hour... In Entity Framework..
I have a 2 tables/classes in a relationship: Item has many Tags.
I'm trying to delete some Tags using context.allTags.RemoveRange({list of tag objects I want deleted}) but now for some reason it's trying to reinsert/duplicate all Items and thereby violating all uniqueness constraints.
Guess will post the source code TMR but this is like wtf?1 -
GitLab, you really should fix your CI.
I mean, I know .gitlab-ci.yml has to be written carefully, having in mind that GL shell is a castrated bourne shell, but come on... Failing a pipeline because I used a semicolon in an `echo` parameter string?
echo ""items: 0" ## this will fail
echo "items 0" ## this will pass
This is a bit too much.
Removed the semicolon and the pipeline worked just fine.11 -
Is there any way to view my devRant post and comment history beyond the 25 last items?
The comment page on my profile only shows the 25 last comments, and nothing loads at the bottom. How to view anything older than that?7 -
PM: hi, how are you?
Me: Okay, Not okay
PM: same here --- Okay and not okay.
PM: Also, I see three items are still pending with you. can you give it closure today?
Me: Okay, I will look it now and try to close it. -
so... self-referential arrays.
do you know any languages that have them? thoughts?
what I mean is (in pseudo-c# syntax) :
string[] r = new string[]{ "1", "2", self[0] + " and " + self[1] };
which would result in an array with items:
1
2

So yesterday there was a discussion at my company about what would be more user friendly for deleting an item or items from a list. Long Press or swipe. We came to an agreement that depends on the UX and choice. What do you think?6

Struggled whole day to remove duplicate objects from a list in java. Those objects (of a custom class) contain a unique id, the remaining properties can be identical across list items.
Wondered why hashset.add() always returns true and thus duplicates are still inserted.
Little did I forget about things like equals() and hashCode() 🤦1 -
Is it just me, that when tapping a rant on mobile the UI marks multiple list items as "selected", although only the one a actually tapped is opened?
It happens within the time I've written this, independently of app restart and it randomly highlights multiple rants below the selected rant, like a connected group of rants.
Anyone an idea?2 -
Best prank of me? I think: Making a screenshot of the desktop and setting it as the desktop background. It was funny to watch people trying to move the items. We also locked the screen and moved the unlock window almost out of view (windows xp). They tried opening the browser or the start menu, nothing worked...1

If I could create laws, I would pass a "software usability act" which would eliminate many annoyances we face daily.
For example, the law would mandate range selection in file managers, mandate time-stamped file names in camera and voice recording apps, and require that browsers open a new tab next to the currently open tab instead of at the end, and all user interfaces must have a dark mode to reduce eye strain, and all operating systems must have a blue light filter, text editors must create a temporary copy when saving to avoid corrupting the existing file, camera applications should not corrupt the entire video file when ending unexpectedly (crashing), cancelling file operations must not cause data loss ( https://support.google.com/photos/... ), no mandatory pull-to-refresh ( https://chromestory.com/2019/07/... ), to mention a few examples.
Mobile file managers commonly lack a range selection feature (also known as shift selection or A-to-B selection), where all items between two selected items of a list can be selected immediately. ES File Explorer had this in 2012, yet many fancy new file managers still don't have this. To select many items, each item needs to be tapped individually. This is an unacceptable annoyance.
This is not to be confused with the inferior drag-to-select which requires holding the finger on the screen until all desired items are selected. Drag-to-select is not range selection, only its ugly stepsister.
Ah yes, under the imaginary software usability act, Mozilla would have to say good-bye to its evil add-on signing. "For our protection" my arse.13 -

I keep having these ideas of a steam like interface for transfering money and buying virtual items, but I can't for the life of me figure out how i would go about it other then a basic flask mongo db set up which would be ripe for malicious attacks5

Shoutout to the guy who made the Starfall vscode theme, I'm really loving it so far. This theme is fantastic, supports over 50 languages, and also super underrated, with only ~650 downloads. Definitely worth checking it out

When creating a nav bar, u float the list items to left. This collapses the border. I can see this as the border does not cover the whole container but shows up as just a line. Why does this happen and how to solve this?2

Fuck google, fuck android, fuck their engineers. Trying to implement paging library 3 from last 10 days. Hitting my head for 10 fucking days. I even created a REST api for this. Before it i was using firebase sdk. After trying everything. As last resort I put my code on their sample source code. still same problem. only god knows how their sample works but lookalike my code doesn't. My Problem is recyclerview keep loading more items without me scrolling.6

So. The question is. Is what is in this for any rational person ? Past this all items and photos returned immediately because let me say this these people seem anything but happy with their crap system6

The moment a trainer u made your boss hire tells u, that it's far from normal that the devs (me) setup the tfs themselves and add also Backlog items, Testcases etc, because PO and Team leader are thinking TFS is way to technical and an developer only tool...

So earlier today I went to a super market store and started gathering some items. After collecting a dozen items I felt like not buying. I put my trolley in a corner with items still in it and walked out if the store without buying anything. My first encounter with abandoning a cart in real life.. 😁😁

[Prestashop question / rant]
Yes, it's not StackOverflow here, neither is it prestashop support forum - but I trust u people most :)
Proper solution for working with big(?) import of products from XML (2,5MB, ~8600 items) to MySQL(InnoDB) within prestashop backoffice module (OR standalone cronjob)
"solutions" I read about so far:
- Up php's max execution time/max memory limit to infinity and hope it's enough
- Run import as a cronjob
- Use MySQL XML parsing procedure and just supply raw xml file to it
- Convert to CSV and use prestashop import functionality (most unreliable so far)
- Instead of using ObjectModel, assemble raw sql queries for chunks of items
- Buy a pre-made module to just handle import (meh)
Maybe an expert on the topic could recommend something?3 -
first() function in python...
Because it does not exist
Why have a any() that returns True if any of the items in iteratable are True
But what if I need to get the item itself...
In C it's as easy to write as the any func The performance will be the same6 -
Tell you what happened to me last time. I went to this fucking job and it lasted the length of orientation just because they're assholes. Just like the assholes.modfied my work schedule by half and hour so I have to leave an hour earlier. Mother fuckers. Give me my goddamn earlier items back and go to hell early !
Imma make things out of them that they sell and feed orphans with them ! Oh and haha exactly 360 rants this morning ! -
Are there any off-limits items for weeklys (other than politics)? Like could we get a "bad dev pickup lines" weekly or should i just start a thread?2

Project released to dev environment... None of my changes are in there. Check the TFS check-in history and the check-ins aren't the code I wrote for specific items. Don't know why, or how. My life is a lie.1

I want to build a industry grade recommendation system. Total users are 1M and total items are more than 100M. Conversion events are item consumption in form of view time and view.
Can you suggest me how to build or some step by step tutorial to build full fledged recommendation system5 -
HI all.
I'm a novice in Web Development and I've made simple Web App I've just publish on Github. I just wanted to play a little to learn API manipulation and JavaScript's Fetch. So I decided to build an app based on Discogs' API for my personal use.
ShuffleBum is an app, which after providing a username in the dedicated field, retrieves all items of user's collection then randomize one of them before displaying it. That's help me to find my next listening records (I have 400+ vinyls in my collection and I always listenning too many time the same records ^^).
Because of Discogs' API construction, I must perform two fetch to retrieve all the items (Items are stacked at 50 per page). So, for my collection, there is 10 pages with 50 items. So, I used a foreach and a fetch to scan items and store them into an array.
But, this is really slow (800ms for each request), so for 10 pages, that's a lot. But I can't see how to improve those request. I can't do otherwise. Well, I guess.
Hope I will have so recommandation, hints, tricks.
Thank you.13 -
It's always some dumb thing that goes wrong. Like, a semicolon I forgot to type, or a period or a misspelled variable. Last week I spent two hours on a Discord Bot coded in Python that refused to iterate a list of names. I had forgotten to put quotation marks around each of the items in the list so they would register as strings instead of integers. Will it ever get better?6

visual basic dotnet
ComboBox and ListBox both have Items property, and also both are descendants from ListControls
but ListControls have no Items property
do those developers understand object oriented programming correctly?1 -
When the client amends the content and removes critical items to be surfaced via the API just because. Fuck it I hate working with immature API's, guess fraud data till they fix it I hate doing shite twice.

I wonder if it'd be possible to use the fidgets on the fidget cubes as controllers or programmable buttons.if that were possible what would u use each of the items on the fidget cube for

Working a week on LSTM based text classifier, getting 89% accuracy only to then get better result with Logistic Regression which was supposed to serve as baseline, lol. Background: 180+ classes of google product categorization taxonomy, 20 million rows of data items (short texts). Had a similar experience once on sentiment classification, where SVMlight outperformed NN models.

When is it a good idea to use linked lists?
In my pet project, I want to have a list of items with an index. The index of an item should be updateable, and the index of the other items should adjust.
A linked list would make it very easy to adjust the order since you just need to update the "next" node of 2 items, but I think this would make getting the index of items more troublesome.
What is the preferred way to do something like this, am I just overthinking it, and would updating all the indices of the items not be such a big job?
The project uses React and mongo (express-mongoose) btw, if that's important.4 -
