New devRant feature! Filtering by post type! This took a bit longer to get out than we had planned, but now that extra click to label a post type will be put to good use! Hate memes but love rants? Want to only see questions? Don't want to see random off-topic posts? Filter away!
We're pushing to Android now, iOS shortly, and web will be coming soon.41 -
One of my favorite aspects of devRant has always been getting to learn more about the awesome people who use it. Beyond just the awesome stories posted by many here, one of my favorite ways to learn about and feel connected to the people here has always been desk/setup reveals. I personally love seeing different kinds of setups from all over the world, knowing that’s what the people here use to do their work and compute in general.
As an experiment, we want to try a few different things to highlight desk/setup/remote coding location posts. First, we’ve created the first devRant Instagram account, which is completely focused on developer desks/setups/workstations/remote coding. Please check it out here and follow: https://www.instagram.com/devdesks/
I want to use the account to bring more attention to the wide assortment of setups the awesome members of the devRant community post from all over the world. We’ll promote cool desk/setup/remote work images that are posted on devRant to the Instagram account for more exposure/additional audience.
Beyond that, I also want to try to come up with a way to better organize all of the desk/setup posts on devRant and encourage more of them. One kind we don’t see that often that I personally really enjoy is people coding with their laptops in locations that show the culture of their country or something special about the region they are from. Personally, I’m going to try to post some of those for where I live and work.
So how can you help with this effort? It’s easy! We encourage people to post their setups/working remotely pics and we will start featuring them on the Instagram account and hopefully elsewhere in the devRant app for some increased visibility/searchabilty over what we have now (since pics are kind of hard to search).
Also, we plan to make the weekly rant this week “post your setup,” so maybe wait until then to post, and you can work now on getting that awesome shot :) I know a lot of people here love photography like I do, so I think that part is fun too.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or questions about this, and I’m looking forward to seeing the desks/setups of many more devRanters in the next few days!
P.S. not a requirement, but one thing I think makes these photos better looking through a lot of them is when there is code visible in some way.44 -
EDIT: since this announcement, collabs have been made free to post for all devRant members!
Introducing two big new devRant features!
First, the one @trogus and I are most excited about - Collabs!
Collabs are an easy way to start projects or work on existing projects with the awesome members of the devRant community. You can post a collab listing for the awesome open source project you started that could use some more contributors, that fun idea you have for a brand new project, or really anything you want to gather some fellow devs for. We think it will be a lot of fun.
Collabs also is a devRant first - it's our first paid feature. For each 2 week collab posting, we're charging $14.99. But we wanted to make sure to thank devRant users who have been with us for a while and anyone who contributes often, so anyone with 2,000 points or higher (now or in the future) gets one free collab listing!
The main reason we see collabs as a great first paid feature is because requiring payment or 2,000 points serves to be a slight barrier in posting a collab. We think for collaborations to be successful it's important to have some way to keep out listings where the poster has no intent of following through and we hope this is a good start to doing that.
NOTE: if the collab you are looking to create is devRant-centric (ex. a devRant Chrome extension), we will give you a free credit especially for that so you don't have to pay or use your earned free one. Just contact us (info@devrant.io) if your project falls into that category.
In addition, after tons of demand from the community, you can now change your username and email address! One important note is that you only get to change your username one time every 6 months, so use it cautiously :) You can access this feature in the "more" tab, then settings, then "Edit username or email."
If you have any questions or feedback about any of this, just let us know! We hope everyone enjoys :)52 -
How everyone uses stackoverflow:
1. Work on some project
2. Spot a bug
3. Try to solve the bug and fail.
4. Write a question for SO.
5. Post question on SO.
6. Get the answer and some points.
How I use stackoverflow:
1. Work on some project
2. Find a bug
3. Try to fix the bug and fail
4. Write a question on SO
5. Get scared that I might be downvoted.
6. Spend 45 minutes optimizing the structure of the question.
7. Try additional tests to cover all possible scenarios.
8. Still scared to click post.
9. Scrap everything and restart line by line writing further details of each step in your question.
10. Find the bug myself.
11. Click cancel on the question that took me 3+ hours to write.
12. Cry.20 -
Shit... I just got my phone stolen. Realized it 40 seconds post factum [left it at the shop counter and someone took it].
20 minutes later called the police [cuz I had to get home and use wife's phone].
5 min later poluce arrived
10 min later they got all they could from shop's security officer.
Police officer asks me to login my samsung acc on his phone. 2 minutes later we are on the way to the exact location my phone is at.
15 minutes later officer hands me my samsung 😁
got my phone back in less than an hour after theft.
maybe... Ummm... Maybe all this tracking thing is not that bad...?13 -
I wanted to post a note on devRant community etiquette and rule-breaking behavior we’ve been seeing lately to make clear it will not be tolerated. This is pretty much a rehash of this rant, https://devrant.com/rants/609739/... and also our official rules which I highly encourage people to read: https://devrant.com/rules
I’ve noticed an influx of a select group of members, mostly older users, expressing a distain towards other users or declaring content they dislike “shouldn’t be posted”, “please stop”, etc. If you find yourself about to post that, as per our rules, please don’t. It blatantly violates our rules and we are going to start cracking down on it much more. Whether you have 30k+ points or 10, we will apply the rules fairly to everyone and not give breaks to specific people, which admittedly I’ve done in the past.
If we see this behavior in rants/comments first we will give a warning (and the rant/comment will be deleted) and the next offense is a ban.
A valid question (even though I’ve answered it before) might be why does this need to be a rule? Simply put, it’s a rule for a number of reasons: posts like described try to inflict one’s will upon the entire community (even though we have a Democrat voting process...), they create confusion (almost every time they try to sound official, ex. “Stop doing this”), and beyond those two main reasons, they literally accomplish nothing because they offer no constructive methods of achieving what’s being requested, and only a fraction of the community will actually see it.
Here’s an example of what’s not allowed and what is allowed:
- Allowed: posting an issue on our GitHub issue tracker saying “I really dislike seeing this type of rant in my algo feed, here’s some ideas I have to improve the algo and add more personalization so I can see what I want.”
- Allowed: posting on GitHub issue tracker: “I found this awesome image similarly algo that I think can improve the ‘repost check feature’ - you guys should check it out and see if it might be good”
- Not allowed: “Omg stop shitposting windows update rants and Linux rants I hate them. Go post this type of rant because that’s what everyone really wants to see.”
One is constructive an the other is merely an opinion expressed as an enforcement of a self-made rule on the community and tries to tell other people how they should use devRant.
I cringe when people tell others how to use devRant because without fail when I see those posts, I go through that person’s rant/comment history and I nearly always see them using devRant in some kind of way I disagree with or isn’t exactly what I like to see. But that’s OK. I understand I’m not going to enjoy everything posted and I’m also not going to agree with everything posted. But I think it’s fair for those same people to then lecture on what isn’t appropriate to post on devRant, and it’s even more silly when their posts are sometimes irrelevant to development and the posts they are complaining about are relevant.
In the end, based on the large majority of feedback we get, we want to make devRant a place where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves and doesn’t have to think about possibly getting ridiculed every time they post and that don’t have people trying to dictate what kind of ideas they are allowed to post. We also realize there’s types of content people don’t enjoy, but telling others not to post it is not the solution. We will soon be launching post type filters that will make filtering rants by post type possible.
Please let me know if you have any questions and thanks for reading.64 -
Here's a list of unpopular stuff which I agree with:
1) I love Java more than any other programming language.
2) I love sleeping more than working.
3) I'm not a night owl. I thrive the most during daylight.
4) I don't like or need coffee. Tea is fine.
5) Webdev is a huge clusterfuck which I secretly wish that could just die already.
6) Cybersecurity is a meme and actually not that interesting. Same passes for Cloud, Machine Learning and Big Data.
7) Although I'm a huge fan of it Linux is too unstable and non-idiot proof to ever become mainstream on the desktop.
8) Windows is actually a pretty solid OS.
9) The real reason I don't use macos is because I'm a poorfag that can't afford an overpriced laptop.
10) I don't like math and I hate that people push math shit into random interview questions for dev jobs which have nothing to do with math.
Post yours.279 -
My dad called me up at 11:30 PM telling me that his computer wasn't booting. I drive over to see what was going on. I notice immediately that the motherboard light is a solid amber light.
Me: "The motherboard is amber, that means it's failing to POST".
Dad: "How soon can we fix it? I need to run my Ebay business."
Me: "A week probably. You have a laptop that works can you use that?"
Dad: "It doesn't work great with Windows, it's not a very powerful compu"
Me: "You're going to use Linux dad. Welcome to Linux."11 -
I wasn't going to post this because I expected loads of hate but fuck it, I'd rather share it anyways. Also take into account that sometimes there's no choice because money is needed or other circumstances :)
This one guy told me to never let down my values and what I stand for if I can afford to do that, no matter what they are.
I'd quit my job over having to use tools like Google or Slack (luckily my company is highly against using Slack and most people have moved to ddg) and as for WhatsApp, I said at my interview that I'd either wanted a business phone for using WhatsApp or I wouldn't use it. Boss said 'thats cool!'
I quote from him(that person who said this to me):
"they force you to use something you're uncomfortable with? Fuck'em. They don't understand your reasons? Their problem.
Even if nobody in the entire world understands/accepts your reasons, doesn't mean they're not valid."29 -
That’s fucking insane.... Probably a double post; sorry in advance... I just have to express my anger and amazement for a second.
Angry that they didn’t use such a high powered DDoS attack against say... Facebook or some shit like that, amazed at the sheer size of that attack...
I kinda wanna touch it.22 -
*On a programming support forum*
Guy: My compiler keeps throwing null pointer exception at line 128.
Me: Ok. Can you post your code real quick so I could figure out what is null at line 128?
Guy: No I'm not going to show my code to someone on the internet. What if you want to steal my code?
My mind: "Dude wtf why would I steal someone's code on a support forum?"
Me: *Use the next 15 minutes explaining that showing the code is necessary so that others can actually help him, and that no one on a support forum is going to steal his code.*
Guy: "You know what I'm more convinced that you want to copy my code. I might as well just try to fix this on my own."
What?14 -
Alright, since Facebook released a VPN service a little while ago but they're actively advertising it as a secure and privacy friendly service, I felt like - although I'm very busy right now - I should do a security/privacy blog post about this.
If you even slightly care about your own privacy or the privacy of anyone you're communicating with, for the love of God, don't use this service.
Hereby a blog post explaining stuffs: https://much-security.nl//...44 -
"devRant has changed" "I'm so fed up with this site" "Its a bunch of hate and memes, it was so much better before"
A rebuttal.
devRant is approximately the same as it was when it was just a newborn. Remember the days of semicolon jokes being unironically funny?
Look at the top rants of all time, for fucks sake. #2 ever is:
"A different error message! Finally some progress!"
Posted three years ago. That's the second most upvoted rant in history (Remember, this was a "rant" because the joke/meme category didn't exist back then), it made it's way into the app store screenshots, and was a welcome post.
Now imagine that posted today. It would probably go over okay, in fairness, but it's certainly at risk of any number of pretentious pricks complaining about how this is "devRANT not 4chan" or how they had seen the joke before and it's a shitty repost.
And sure, the repost bullshit is fair. I'm not saying that all the reposts are good content. What I'm saying is devRant has always been full of reposts - they just weren't reposts in the early days. The quality of content is the same.
There's also the common misconception that your posts need to be directly related to tech to post on devRant. This is a myth propagated by 0 IQ heathens that don't read any further than the name of the application. Your posts can be anything that isn't prohibited, like porn, spam, and, importantly, politics (commonly overlooked rule)
"All the memes are just too much". Oh you poor fucking baby, let me pour you a healthy serving of pity juice. First of all, you can turn off the memes category, and while they will still find their way to your feed, the concentration will be much lower and it will once again be bearable for your pitiful, weak little soul. Do you seriously get annoyed that severely by shitty posts that you need to leave the app altogether, or do you just want the attention of being a "cool hipster that hates on xyz"?
"This place is just filled with hate! Why can't you just respect xyz technology, it isn't actually that bad!"
This is probably the most stupid fucking thing you could possibly ejaculate from your fingers into whatever device you are using to type. Welcome to devRant, we hate on shit. That's at our core. No, xyz technology ISN'T actually that bad, you're correct. But we're here to tear it apart because it probably has frustrated us in the past. I fucking hate JS because it was my first language and it confused the shit out of me. JS is a great language. But I still talk shit about it, and that's what we're here to do.
Like seriously, I know a lot of people post stuff they're proud of here, and then they're met with "Would be great if you didn't use xyz tech", and that hurts, but holy shit, this is devRant. If you're sensitive to criticism, or even just straight up being made fun of, don't post shit that you're proud of. You won't have a good time. It's just not what we do here.
Quick interlude before the conclusion, "My girlfriend dumped me after I named a class after her. She felt I treated her like an object." is also on the first page of all-time most popular posts.
In conclusion, devRant has not changed. Reposts have been a nuisance since day 0, and just because reposts look different these days doesn't mean the quality of content has decreased in any manner. The two main sources of your frustration are the volume of low-quality posts (Mind you, not the concentration of them, but the volume of them) and your own prejudices about the platform. You're looking back with rose-tinted glasses.
Here are some tips for a more enjoyable experience:
-Make sure you have the "Hide reposts" setting ENABLED in settings. Any posts marked as repost will be hidden in your feed, pulling down the concentration of low-quality posts.
-Keep to the algo sorting method. Obviously, algo is a bot, and there's still gonna be some shit content in there anyways, but if you're in recent, you are absolutely guaranteed to see low-quality posts. It's unfiltered.
-Keep in mind that what you consider a "quality" post is not what others consider a "quality" post. Just because you don't like memes doesn't mean memes are poor content. There are people here who have never seen the bobby tables comic. And they deserve the same experience we got when discovering dev humor.
-Don't be a prick. And if you cannot help yourself, leave. Ironically, you're making the site worse by complaining about how bad the site is. You can always come back if you aren't a prick anymore. And you can leave permanently if you choose as well.
-Downvote and move on. You're not doing anything but making yourself more aggravated by leaving a shitty comment about how shitty the shitty post is.
-Think critically. Obviously optional, and I know not many people like to use their brain when a phone is suspended between their hands, but if you want a better experience, remember to use your head and not to lose it.21 -
Before anyone starts going batshit crazy, this is NOT a windows hate post. Just a funny experience imo.
So I was tasked with installing ProxMox on a dedicated server at my last internship. The windows admin was my guider (he could also do debian). (he was a really nice/chill guy)
So we were discussing what VM's we wanted and the boss (really cool dude by the way) said he wanted a VPS for storing some company stuff as well. Fair enough, what would we use? I suggested debian and centos. Then we started discussing what we'd do if the systems would fuck up etc (at installation or whatever).
So I didn't wanna look like a Linux Nazi so I suggested windows. Then the happy/positive guider/windows admin suddenly became dead serious (I was actually like 'woah' for a second) and said this:
No. We're not going to fucking use windows for this. For general servers etc sometimes, fair enough but we're talking about sensitive company data here. I don't want that data to be stored on a proprietary/closed source system, hell what if there's some kinda fucking backdoor build in, who can fucking verify that? We're using Linux, end of discussion.
😓
I was pretty flabbergasted as he's a nice guy and actually really likes windows!
Linux it became.5 -
Mam: Hey can I ask you a question about Facebook?
Me: (Christ give me strength) ... sure whats up?
Mam: You know when you get a notification and you click on it and see what someone uploaded?
Me: ... you are not on Facebook, you can't be getting notifications
Mam: well I do. Is it possible to...
Me: No hang on a second, it is 110% not possible for this to happen. Something else is going on that you think is a notification.
Mam: You know when you are on, and you see a message like "12 new notifications"
Me: on? on what? this is happening on your phone is it? Can I see?
Mam: No its on my laptop at home.
Me: ... you have an old laptop with an old windows, you can't get notifications on it.
Mam: OH FOR GOD SAKE! ... you know when you are in your emails and it says "12 new notifications"?
Me: ... right so we are talking about EMAILS about unread notifications and not getting notifications on your phone. So you have an old account then that you don't use?
Mam: Yeah I don't know the password to it, haven't logged in, in years.
Me: of course
Mam: Right anyway. When I get one and click on it, lets say its about you, can you see me reading your notifications?
Me: ..... you can't not read my notifications.
Mam: uh, can you see me reading your emails then smart arse?
Me: ... can't do that either.
Mam: So what the hell am I doing then?
Me: You are reading a post someone uploaded, which you got alerted to from an email.
Mam: Right, can you tell when I've read your POST then?!?!?!
Me: no
Mam: was that so hard?
Me: ... yep7 -
I can't post a rant about wk50 because I know some coworkers use this app and I'm afraid they'll realize how stupid I really am.8

So just recently my school blocked the following for unknown reasons websites
Github
Gitlab
Amazons aws
stack exchange
Bitbucket
Heroku
The hacker news
DuckDuckGo
The Debian package repositories yea all of em
And all domains that end in .io
Now some of you out there are probably just saying "well just use a vpn" the answer to that is I can't the only device I have a locked down school iPad can't install apps cannot delete apps cannot change vpn or proxy setting's I cannot use Safari private tab they have google safe search restricted to "on" they even have "safari restricted mode which lets safari choose what it wants to block" and even when I'm on my home wifi it's s still blocked as they use Cisco security connector THIS IS HELL
Also this is my first post :)30 -

I'm tired of those post and memes about wasting four days finding a missing semicolon (;).
Where do those guys program? Notepad?
Come on! Use the existing tools!8 -
The problem with my life is acceptance from others. Validation (almost wrote vladiation).
For instance, I finished my course in Advanced Java Programming a few days ago. Supposed to be a year course or some shit, finished it in two months. They told me I don't need to go to the remainder classes and I could write the examination. Got the certifications, passed with flying colours.
Well done me? No, fuck you me. "It's not through Oracle, so it's completely useless. Har har you wasted your measly salary on a course and it means nothing". You know what? Fuck you and fuck validation. I will validate myself from now on.
Anywhom, what a start to a shitty rant. Let's go over some generic points so I can finally make my avatar.
IE can suck a duck ("oooh you made it and it runs fine in every fucking browser except fucking IE - slow clap).
Chrome RAM usage can suck a duck, two times. (just generic post, don't actually give a shit - I use Firefox).
People who can't use one fucking indentation standard ("oooh two spaces, oooh three spaces, oooooh a fucking tab button... " etc) can fuck off.
That fucker who came and converted my buildings in Age of Empires with the "wolololo" priest can fuck off too.
Been reading through devRant and you know what? You guys are pretty cool5 -
Hey, this is my first day and first post on DevRant ! :D
I just wanted to share with you how much i hate the WIX ads on YouTube!
"Hey, want a website? Build it yourself !"
What's wrong with their dumb algorithm at Google? I'm very familiar with web development, just use my cookies and understand that I MAKE MY OWN WEBSITES!13 -
I don't understand why people tend to shit on certain languages.
I`ve seen my fair share of shit software written in a plethora of languages, and the problem was usually that the devs used the language/framework completely wrong.
Languages and frameworks are designed to solve problems, if you don`t use them in the correct way then you are to blame.
It is like sticking your dick in the exhaust pipe of a Volvo, and then writing a Medium post complaining about your charred dick and how all Volvo's suck. Yeah I'm talking about you PHP haters, all of you that shit on Java on a daily basis and you morons saying "python is slow"
Don't get me wrong, I send PHP shitposts/memes all day to my friends working with it. But if my code doesn't work, it is my fault and I own up to it.
With that said, I will blow my brains out before writing a single line more of PHP
Rant over10 -
I feel a bit bad when I reject most people after interviews - they'll do alright, just don't have the knowledge we're looking for.
Other people who fail interviews just piss me off.
If you're applying for a *senior* position, yet you tell me a race hazard is "what happens when concurrent applications are working efficiently", a GET request is "only ever used in a REST API", a POST request is "when you use TCP directly" and you can't write a single line of code in a new project because "in the real world we always just modify what's there already", then please sod right off. There comes a point when you clearly know bugger all, have extensively lied on your CV, and you're just trying to con your way into a position while hoping no-one notices.
Argh.18 -
Okay, y'all!
Thank you for being remotely interested in my post. It really cheered me up :-D
Here's the definition I submitted, also attached the proof of my humiliation.
devrant
It's the ray of fucking sunshine in a developer's perpetually annoying lifestyle. It is developer-made for developer-use.
An anonymous social platform where the app owners/founders/creators ACTUALLY LISTEN to user feedback!
Developers who have made up a million fucking ways to ask their fucktard co-worker/boss/client to go die, can exchange their creativity for ++s.
It's a platform to channel their rage into a creative rant and calm down a bit. It's like taking a long, deep, virtual breath.
Useless software/apps that behave like they were developed by 5 year olds, also take a hit sometime.
PS - Addiction is a common side effect.18 -
Github bought by Microsoft.
GitLab migrating to Google.
I Already didn't use github but I'm a - that'll change soon - gitlabber.

My startup boss took away our teams chat because we needed to "let everyone see our conversations for context". i said that's more like paranoia. then he told us we had to use company portraits and logos on LinkedIn and Social Media. and to post company ads and links on social media at least once a day. im not a social media manager, im a programmer MF'r. is this normal?????11

I reversed engineered the network protocol for a game.
I uploaded the source code to GitHub and made a post on UC Forums.
I kept getting bombarded with messages from the same person, it went something like this:
Him: "I can't get this hack to work, pls send finish hack, thanks"
Me: "First of all this is not a complete hack. You actually need to know how to code to use this library."
Guy: "Ok, can u help me make hack for game?"
To keep this short, I basically told him:
"No. Look through the code, learn it, use what you learned."
Couple of hours later he replied:
"Ok. I look through code but don't know how work. Send me code pls."
From the kindness of my heart I made a extremely simplified wrapper for the already simple code and sent him the project files.
He replies with: "Thank for hack, I not able make it work. I build I try inject game but no work. How to run dll file."
At that point I gave up...3 -
Okay, question;
Can I use ANY phone number in my game?
According to Wikipidia:
"Numbers between (555)-0100 & (555)-0199 are reserved for fictional use."
But.. I'm wanting to have a little phone pop up in my game that you can enter phone numbers into and text the corresponding player (and i hope to have more than 99 players) I would just have contact names, but I want players ti be able to dick around with other players.. Like, post their number to in-game telemarketers and such. What fo you think I should do?29 -
Wow Mozilla published an infographic instead of an actual blog post and didn't include an alt-tag. Let's just ignore the fact that blind users exist and use screenreaders, articles about privacy don't apply to them right?9

How to post a question on a forum:
1. Create an account with a cute girl name like AnnaLovesYou143
2. Post your question. Ex. "How do I use Google? Thanks xOxO <3"
3. Wait for guys to give you a complete answer for your question or an offer to help you via a private message.7 -
WordPress related, get ready for some disgust.
So today early in the morning my boss forwarded me an email from a client, it was about a bug, and asked me if I can have a look at it and fix it.
"Yaay, WordPress!" I thought and opened the page containing the mentioned bug. She wrote that in the italian version of the page, users can select dates in the calendar, which should be disabled, like in the german version.
So yeah, I opened the code. Everything in the function looked perfect. Really. And the Data was also correctly set in the backend of WP.
The function was only 3 lines of code:
- Get the german post ID of the current post (german or italian) by its ID (using a Polylang function)
- Get an Advanced Custom Fields field by name and from a post with the ID from before
- json_encode its content and echo it to a JS var for initialization and later use in some AngularJS.
No fucking missing semicolon, it was fucking perfect like a sunset with your soulmate.
So I tried to find the bug with my personal way of debugging:
"Shitstream Debugging"
When a creek suddenly is full of water mixed with shit, walk upstream through the turds until you reach clear water. This is where the bug is.
=> So I first looked at the HTML source: Turds.
=> Then the ACF field content: Still turds.
=> Then the ID of the german post: Shit stain and turds (var_dump: null)
=> Please god at least $post->ID? Nope, fart smell and turds.
=> Nothing more to check: Clear fucking water and the flowery smell of 99 devVirgins
So it replaced $post->IT with get_the_ID() and it worked like a charm.
Afterwards I feel stupid, but $post->IT worked all the times before...
Conclusion:
FUCK YOU WORDPRESS YOU UGLY PIECE OF HUMAN-CENTIPEDE-PROCESSED-DOGFART.
Thanks for your patience.
Only one beer was sucked dry during the writing of this fucking rant.2 -
There was maybe one of the coolest methods of apply for a job. There was a company in Sydney on linkedin on the apply href for the job was pointing to localhost (might of been a accident) so you had to find their website and with the trailing url get to the page then they said to send OPTIONS request to a endpoint here you got a link to a api doc to where you send a POST to apply for a job they had a example body to use. So sending the Post request with with postman required headers so looking more into the doc it gave the headers needed. Now the example body for the post had some errors in it and once they are fixed you can then submit the request.
NOW thats the way to find competent developers shame I'm not one of the.5 -
RANT TIME!
Sorry guys, I know this is devRant and probably not a place to post this but am fucking burning with fury and fatigue! I should probably develop elecRant and post it there instead.
I FUCKING HATE POWER ELECTRONICS!!
I am in my final year of electrical engineering and I can fucking say with confidence that power electronics is the most fucked up unit I have seen in my life. A whole load of useless math from simple RLC circuits just to make students' lives miserable. For those who might not know, power electronics is some unit that involves use of solid state electronics(transistors, diodes etc) for power applications(switching mostly). Basically things like inverters and converters. UPS systems are an example of their applications.
Now don't be fooled by how that sounds cool and so smart, this shit is fucked up. These circuits in the attached picture might just seem like simple RLC networks with some BJTs, but they are devils in their own right. They fucking need some advanced unnecessary calculus and Fourier analysis to even calculate the simplest output current!! Worst still, some of these motherfuckers have more than 1 mode of operation, needing one to analyze some fucking 100+ waveforms. I fucking hate this shiit! I hate it!
You might say that i am just being lazy and don't want to study. Let me tell you something, FUCK YOU TOO!!19 -
Basically finished the notification filter script* already, but there's still some small bugs I want to get to first, so in the meanwhile I created a "subscribe" button script**, that simply posts a pin emoji and "Subscribing to the comments".
On desktop I usually used to post a dot to subscribe to rant comments, but with the new people wave, that was often misunderstood (you emoji users won the evolution of comment subscribing, RIP dot) I'm sure some other people that use the webapp more often, will find it useful too.

That would probably be implementing multithreading in shell scripts.
https://gitlab.com/netikras/bthread
The idea (though not the project itself) was born back when I still was a sysadmin. Maintaining 30k servers 24/7 was quite something for a team of merely ~14 people. That includes 1st line support as well.
So I built a script to automate most of my BAU chores. You could feed a list of servers - tens or hundreds or more - and execute the same action on each of them (actions could be custom or predefined in the list of templates). Neither Puppet nor Chef or Ansible or anything of sorts was consistently deployed in that zoo, not to mention the corp processes made use of those tools even a slower approach than the manual one, so I needed my own solution.
The problem was the timing. I needed all those commands to execute on all the servers. However, as you might expect, some servers could be frozen, others could be in DMZ, some could be long decommed (and not removed from the listings), etc. And these buggars would cause my solution to freeze for longer than I'd like. Not to mention that running something like `sar -q 1 10` on 200 servers is quite time-consuming itself :)
And how do I get that output neatly and consistently (not something you'd easily get with moving the task to a background with '&'. And even with that you would not know when are all the iterations complete!)?
So many challenges...
I started building the threading solution that would
- execute all the tasks in parallel
- do not write anything to disks
- assign a title to each of the tasks
- wait for all the tasks to complete in either
> the same sequence as started
> as soon as the task finishes
- keep track of each task's
> return code
> output
> command
> sequence ID
> title
- execute post-finish actions (e.g. print to the console) for each of the tasks -- all the tracked properties are to be accessible by the post-finish actions.
The biggest challenges were:
a) how do I collect all that output without trashing my filesystems?
b) how do I synchronize all those tasks
c) how do I make the inception possible (threads creating threads that create their own threads and so on).
Took me some time, but I finally got there and created the libbthread library. It utilizes file descriptors, subshells and some piping magic to concentrate the output while keeping track of all the tasks' properties. I now use it extensively in my new tools - the ones where I can't use already existing tools and can't use higher-level languages.4 -
Doing linguistic research where I need to parse 2000 files of a total of 36 GB. Since we are using python the first thing I thought was to implement multi threading. Now I changed the total runtime from three days to like one day and a half. But then when I checked the activity monitor I saw only 20 percent of the CPU usage. After a searching process I started to understand how multi threading and multi processing works. Moral of the story: if you want to ping a website till they block you or do easy tasks that will not use up all power of one core, do multi thrading. If you need to do something complicated that can easily consume all the powers of a single CPU core, split up the work and do multi processing. In my case, when I tried to grab information from a website, I did multi thrading since the work is easy and I really wanted to pin the website 16 times simultaneously but only have 4 cores. But when it come to text processing which a single file will take 80 percent of cpu, split it up and do multi processing.
This is just a post for those who are confused with when to use which.12 -
My Android phone is 5 years old. Everybody tell me I should buy a new one but I'm a stingy environmentalist and I refuse buying new stuff if it is not strictly necessary.
So, for 9€ I replaced the phone battery and then I installed a custom ROM, so it looks a bit newer.
Unfortunately, it seems that something in the network configuration has been fucked up.
The phone is able to browse the Internet, but:
- WiFi hotspot is not working
- USB tethering is not working
- Bluetooth tethering is not working
- PPP over USB is not working
But, hey, I never give up, so this is my current setup:
- I installed a proxy server on the phone
- I'm using "adb forward" to forward the proxy port from the phone to my laptop
- I configured Firefox to use that proxy
And, yes, I'm using that connection to write this post. :D8 -

> IHateForALiving: I have added markdown on the client! Now the sys admin can use markdown and it's going to be rendered as HTML
> Team leader: ok, I've seen you also included some pics of the tests you made. It's nice, there's no XSS vulnerabilities, now I want you to make sure you didn't introduce any SQL injection too. Post the results of the tests in the tickets, for everybody to see.
I've been trying to extract from him for 15 minutes how sending a text through a markdown renderer on the client is supposed to create a SQL injection on the server, I've been trying to extract from him how showing all of this to the world would improve our reputation.
I miserably failed, I don't know how the fuck am I supposed to test this thing and if I a colleague wasted time to make sure some client-side rendering didn't create a SQL injection I'd make sure to point and laugh at them every time they open their mouth.9 -
I opened a post starting with a "NO TOFU" logo and I was wondering what relationship existed between the SSH protocol and anti-vegan people.
After some paragraphs it explained that TOFU stands for Trust On First Use (a security anti-pattern).7 -
@Everyone, I would like to congratulate @Haxk20 on being the victor of our little upvote fight.
It was a hard battle, and although I was ahead briefly, I would like to name @Haxk20 the victor!
Starting ++:
@Haxk20: 36,872
@C0D4: 35,401
As of post:
@Haxk20: 39,935
@C0D4: 38,454
That's an impressive: 6,116 up votes in total from everyone involved.
As I have noticed requests for the repo, i would like to state It will be deleted, but I will re-release it as an empty template in the event others want to use it later - as per our original agreement.19 -
For any keyboard lover like me: this little guys are the most valuable things in my setup. Ortholinear keyboards from http://olkb.com I can't recommend them enough. They are fully programmable and comes in kits for you to finish mounting. The red one is a planck and the other is a preonic.
I'm using dsa keycaps from pimpmykeyboard and the switches are gateron blues.
They just opened a new massdrop for the planck, these are already assembled and ready for use. Check it out at https://massdrop.com/buy/...
P.S.: I have nothing to do with the project and I'm not getting paid to post this. Just love them and want to spread the word. Hope someone love them as much as I do.15 -
So I finally decided to get a theme for sublime (And other packages). I'm loving it. Post your IDE/Text editors or whatever you use to code.32

Why the fuck does people who teach in professional colleges doesn't have the mindset to update their godamnn fucking dinosaur knowledge to the least basics of modern technology.
Had to do this mini-project for uni, and the languages allowed included java, python, php or any similar frontend tools for creating desktop app or web app. I planned on taking React + Express cz apparently that'll fall in the category.
Now she starts yelling at my project saying its not allowed and when I fucking asked her "can I use node.js which is basically javascript" she said yes.
And for gods sake she has a Masters degree and phd but doesn't even know what's the difference between get and post request!! Fed up with this college shit!!7 -
To all "StackOverflow is BAD" ranters - give link or don't post. And even before, please read
http://rtfm.cz/smart-questions.html...
Facebook/Instagram era taught people that it's easier to just ask question gazzylion of times before doing research / using search (even "site:stackoverflow.com" search)
I do rarely post on SO just because in 99% of cases I find solution when preparing my question during research or due to yellow duck effect.
When I got qualified to do reviews on questions I started to see how often they are so abroad or so primitive than 10min of duckduckgoing would solve it. But no, it's easier to use other people for you.5 -
Hello there, I'm new here and decided to post something from my short experience as a developer.
A few weeks ago I was working on the software for a Uni project (using a Raspberry Pi to create a combination lock "safe"), and as I was using one of the University's Pi's, I was writing the Python code on my laptop (because University computers don't have Sublime Text), then copying it to the uni computer and ssh into the Pi to run it.
As I had to make a few changes, I decided to use IDLE on the uni computer to do them, but when trying to run the code I couldn't see the changes made. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what's wrong and then I realised... I was saving the changes to the local machine, not the version of the file on the Pi.
It was a very frustrating experience..6 -
So to start off this happened today while I was at school.
Each student gets a netbook for school and the amount of restrictions put in place are probably up to government spec. Well I brought in my personal netbook and a flash drive with a few distros of Linux on it on it to mess with during study hall(all on my own hardware).
I told my friend that about it and said I doubted it would boot because the bios is password protected and the IT guy probably removed external drives from the boot list but let him use it anyway.
5 minutes later he is showing me his screen with Ubuntu running on it, I was freaking out some and asked for it back and he gave it back to me.
About a minute later he shows me his screen. All black with white text shooting down it saying windows disk integrity check or something like that. All I see is "file xyz deleted" and was freaking out even more. I just sat there for the next 20 minutes thinking of how to explain this to the IT guy and hopefully get in less trouble.
Finally after the longest 20 minutes of my life as a student I see the windows 7 boot screen appear. Probably the one time I actually wanted to see it honestly but I was so happy to see the end of the situation.
Sorry this was so long but I hope it's fine for a first post here, I've been putting it off but after this decided to finally post.3 -
Becoming a High Reputation Stackoverflow Master
Can work like this:
1. Look for questions like "How do I add a value to a list"
2. Post "Use list.Add(x)" faster than any of the 20 expected answers that will be written for this question
3. Become accepted solution
4. Get 100 up votes as more people unaware of API documentation come across your answer
Sometimes answers and questions are so trivial you wonder how this would be upvoted by anyone ever.2 -
FR rant
Warning : Do not use devRant in the lavatory, especially the shower.
So i was browsing devRant in the lavatory like a normal human being (?) and saw a post super funny, laughed so hard, and dropped the phone. Now the bottom left of my phone doesnt work.
So i was browsing devRant in the lavatory like a normal human being (?), went inside a shower without noticing that i went into the shower, turned on the faucet without noticing that i turned in the faucet, and i was attacked by fierce water with the pressure level 10 (10 is the max). Then i found out my favorite snoopy t shirt, which i wore just before coming into the lavatory, is wet. Completely. And water is dripping from my phone's charging port, but works flawlessly for 5 days.
So i was browsing devRant in the lavatory like a normal human being (?), writing this rant, and just because i feel tired, i moved a little bit and got my bottoms all wet which feels so bad...
So the final thing i would like to say is a feature request. Please check whether the user is in the shower or not. Lavatory is fine. But shower is not. You can use thr data retrieved from thw humidity sensor.

So I've seen people post pictures of what their setups look like but i havent seen anyone post about what software they use, I was wondering what peoples software setup was like in terms of operating systems, window managers and programs that you use to develop/ help develop and whatever else you might use.
I personally use ubuntu with i3 as a window manager, atom as a text editor and of course terminal and google.24 -
Dear devRant:
What is your favourite color scheme?
I've been trying gruvbox over a month and I like the softer colors and the retro 70's feel. I had been on solarized for over 3 years before making the switch.
What do you like to use? Post screenshots!11 -

Just wanted to spread awareness about a Windows 10 devRant app called "devRant Unofficial". It's literally a 1:1 clone of the Android and iOS apps.
Maybe the devRant team could contact the dev for come co-operation and get an official app for Windows 10 with little to none effort?
It works on mobile and PC so I can easily use it on my Lumia and Surface. I know most of you guys here use macOS, but for us Windows devs, having an official app would be cool.
I know Valve talked to an unofficial developer of the Steam app for Windows Phone, and gave him approval for removing the "unofficial" tag. I suggest you guys do the same.
Happy 2016's death everyone, and sorry for the long and boring post!13 -
I only see rants here about people who post to StackOverflow. I use it a lot but all questions i wanted to know were usually answered so I just had to search for them. I never posted something there and don't even have an account. Anyone else doing the same thing?4

Read a blog post at work yesterday from the company head of IT security. Line 1:
As part of our company policy we enforce the use of usernames and passwords, known as two factor authentication. However we also need to ensure.....
Stopped listening at this point as I hit Google to confirm the definition of two factor auth.
Nope I'm not loosing my mind, the blog post is insane....1 -
In some other rant I told @rusty-hacker about the "not a MacBook" I use for work (and play), but apparently you can't attach an image to a comment, so I thought I'd post this here.15

Just over heard, Dev A was reviewing another team's code ...
Senior Dev A: "I don't understand this teams code. I hate WebAPI. Wish we could use X."
Senior Dev B: "Why can't we use X?"
Senior Dev A: "It's frowned upon."
Senior Dev B: "By whom?"
- couple of seconds of silence -
Senior Dev A: "X is not a Microsoft technology"
- few more seconds of awkward silence -
Senior Dev A: "X is magnitudes slower than WebAPI anyway."
Senior Dev C: "What? How much slower?"
- caught off guard..didn't know Senior Dev C didn't have his headphones on -
Senior Dev A: "Um...I don't know, that is what you told me."
Senior Dev C: "I never said that. I've never used X. I prefer WebAPI anyway, but both WebAPI and X use REST based protocols, I doubt X is magnitudes slower. Actually, I think you told me WebAPI was slower."
Senior Dev A: "Different paradigm."
- second or two of silence -
Senior Dev B: "What?"
Senior Dev A: "Hey, did you see on twitter ..."
Have no idea where he thought that conversation was going. Maybe he was hoping the other devs would dog-pile/attack the code. Pretty funny it backfired. His face when Dev C said 'I never said that' was priceless. Like "Oh -bleep- ..how do I lie out of this one? ...quick, distract with random words or a twitter post" -
I've got a rant-type question:
Why would you EVER use Google Chrome?
There are a million browsers in the world, you could've used Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi, Brave, Bad Wolf, Qute, st, Epiphany etc, but you chose to uss Google Chrome.
What would be the reason you would ever choose Google Chrome over any of the million browsers, out of which many of them get the job done much better than Chrome? Okay, I get it why you might use IE or Edge, cause you might be too lazy to install any other browser or you just want the performance benefits you get with Edge which totally, most definatelly, a very big plus point for Edge.
*"Chrome has a balanced-bloat out of all browsers"*
But how tf does that matter? That doesn't even help performance wise anyways.
I can't get over the fact that I have to see/hear about 'Chrome hogging RAM' EVERYWHERE. Like, why do you even care about the god damn browser? Why is it a standard over the million other browsers that exist? Why can't the general public be educated that browsers have choices (just like phones) and you don't have to spit crap over people who don't use Chrome.
It just drives me crazy of how many people hate Chrome, and still it's a 'default' browser.
I would quote Vivaldi (the company/browser):
'A browser should adapt to you, not the other way around.'
(Disclaimer: Rant of a former Firefox, qute, st, Opera, OperaGX, Edge, and ofcourse, Chrome user. Currently in deep love with Vivaldi.)
I'm done ranting. Have a nice day!
(My first post here, if I did something wrong, let me know! I'll make sure I don't do it again!)55 -
Wow, since vue passed react on gh, this is like a competition, but only for the stars.
It's been like 2 days that there's < 10 stars of difference.
Looks like shitpost that you see on facebook, where the likes are not use to "evaluate" a post, but mostly as a dummy counter.
Am i the only one to found this ridiculous?7 -
1. Apply to as mant jobs as possible daily on dice/linkedin/indeed
using keyword resumes customized by scrapping
2. Filter out low-effort crap companies and filter out recruiters.
3. Post "dice/indeed/linkedin daily decrapified."
Tada! Fewer time-wasters during the job hunt.
4. Bonus: turn into a search engine.
5. Daily double round: turn crap listings and quality listings into AI training sets. Incorporate into search engine.
If industry can use bullshit hiring filters, we can use application filters!4 -

Java dev here. I rewrote an app and replaced a system call to ssh with a modern jaxrs post for uploading a file and (new) some additional data.
I even used a stream.
1 hour in production, first client doesn't get his file. Log says OutOfMemoryError: heap.
Me: wtf? I already use streams.
Looking at the Jersey library. Docs say nothing. An issue from 2013 says: oh if you silly don't use the Apache httpclient addon, we disable chunking and buffer the whole body, because our tests fail with the jdk included http client otherwise.
Me: meh.
No warning in the logs. Thank you soooooo much! Who could have known?4 -
God I fucking hate WordPress
Today I found out a single WooCommerce site is using 20% of database CPU (for comparison, 50 other sites use only 10% between them). Upon investigation it turns out that WooCommerce loads every single product in order to do the taxonomy count. Because the data is stored as PHP-serialised values in post meta, there's no way to do a decent "SELECT count() ... GROUP BY ...". And that code came straight from the WordPress devs, no more and no less...8 -
When I use devRant in the browser, want to post a comment and click right next to the post button accidently, the comment text field thingy is empty after re-clicking the 'add comment' button. Annoying as hell when you just wrote a 800 character comment! @dfox @trogus5

Saw a post talking about vegans which reminded me of the below video of "if meat eaters acted like vegans". Probably the best thing you'll see all week. Personal favourite quote (which I hope to use one day):

When you're using a sophisticated software and you've shown your work to your non-dev friends and they say "Wow! What APP did u use?"
Furk it! App sounds like a small icon on your mobile phone to take a selfie putting a dog filter to post for everyone to see! You call this tool just an "APP"? May Zeus forgive this blasphemy.

Linux is shit, OSX and iOS are trash, windows is the only OS that actually works, open source is always inferior to closed source, if you use VPN or encryption youre a criminal, java is slow, vim worse than nano, ..
Now that I've got your attention and you probably raged and downvoted.
Downvotes don't actually work on devrant. (not a bug)
This has been going on for months already - why have that function to begin with, if its just not fucking working? The usual answer to people throwing a fit is "just downvote it", WHY? it doesnt fucking work.
For a while specific options while downvoting DID actually work, but now any of the downvote options are just straight trashed and ignored, they are saved, dont get me wrong (or else it would be too obvious), but they dont affect any of the scores at all.
I understand mass bot downvoting should be prevented, but why take away anyones voice by completely ignoring downvotes. I really dont get it, its not "punishing" the creator of said post or comment, its simply reflecting what the users actually think of said comment or post, it boils my blood how thats even a thing, I am honestly disappointed.
Why should also downvoting something hide it from the feed (especially on the "recent" filter), let me fucking decide what I want on my feed via option then atleast. What if I don't agree with a rant, downvote it, but then want to see what others thought of it? how am I supposed to find it again?24 -
Here's two tips for doing better posts that a lot of people seem to need:
1) Use smaller paragraphs instead of a giant one.
Be nice to readers and avoid posting single giant walls of text.
2) If you post something short and the first comment is "why?", then you're just annoying readers. Whenever you do a statement like "I'm having a shitty day" or "X technology is garbage" please include enough explanation or context that motivated the post, don't make users chase you for explanations.16 -
Google Business Profile is probably not meant for developers. "Help customers find your business by industry." Dev: set primary category to "Web Developer". Google: We didn't understand your category. Please select from the suggestions that appear when typing. Dev, typing: "Web D"... Google suggests: "Web Designer, Web hosting company, Well drilling contractor, Waterbed shop". Okay, Google, nevermind.
Google: "Update your customers. Keep your customers up to date about your business!" Dev clicks "add update", adds info about that customer should use different phone number temporarily due to broken phone. Google: "Your post has been removed from your Business Profile on Google because it violates one or more of our post content policies." Okay Google, at least you let me add an additional phone number on my profile without requiring to verify my primary number that I currently have not access to. Anything else?
Google: "Claim your €400 free advertising credit" Dev: clicks "claim credit" Google: "To access this Google Ads account, enable 2-Step Verification in your Google account." How to combine idiocy and deceptive patterns in a single UI: Google knows! Apart from their search engine, their unique business advantage is simple that they suck a little less than Apple and Microsoft. Sorry, not a day to be proud of our profession, once again.5 -
I am going to post cryptic ass shit on y'alls shit that gives over a fake sense of me knowing what I am talking about in terms of faking my credentials from working on big companies and having tons of knowledge of software development in an effort to convince you all in of my credentials to get massive upvotes by making you all think I am intellectually and technologically superior to you in multiple senses! I will use a thesaurus for this btw! not my general day to day speech! after all, it will give my fake ideals of credibility more success and acceptance! remember! i worked for all companies starving kids in different parts of the world did! nothing but my word for it!
Some people really need to consider the shit they read online from people that have been caught bullshitting all the time.
9/10 your shit is good enough, stop letting phonies make you feel inadecuate over their supposed success in this works ffs16 -

A story about RAM and being... well... not so clever...
I've built a mid-range gaming PC for a friend, based on skylake, with 8GB DDR4 RAM. So I filled up only 2 slots to leave 2 more for upgrade. So he decided to do so.
Later he calls me and says "Hey, can you visit me? My PC won't boot".
So I came and he told me what happened: he found a random RAM stick and decited to put it in. He somehow(wait for it) managed to do it and PC refused to boot. He removed this stick, but PC won't boot anyway.
Soo, when I came, he showed me a stick he found: a random ddr2-533mhz 512 mb stick. Ofc, MB was shocked to see "grandfather" and refused to boot. I looked at the post code, which said ram error, cleared the cmos and it booted just fine.
Check compatability, young builders, and use Google if you're unsure :)9 -

Top image is before, bottom is after a single click. I just join boxes and let it work it out at the end. Then obviously do some adjustments to read how I like but seriously makes it easier to trial various layouts. I even make stuff in yED before recreating in something like Visio, if need be.
If anyone got another diagramming tool they like to use, post below (trying to add new stuff to my toolbox lol)
EDIT: Ahh, tried but you can't see the lines after the image gets compressed after upload (and DarkReader on chrome isn't exactly helping :p).9 -
1. Focus on learning; earning should come secondary
2. If it doesn't add anything to your resume, it's probably not worth picking up
3. Do not re-invent the wheel. Explore third parties and libraries thoroughly. Use them as much as you can.
4. If you stuck at a problem for more than 2-3 hours: post on stackoverflow
5. Plan, create deadlines, and focus as if an executive chose you.
Lazy = failure!5 -
RANT:
Google is just a steaming pile of shit!!
I've recently installed LineageOS onto my phone and wanted to degooglify my life.
So my current Smartphone doesn't have any GApps installed and I get along fairly well.
Should I need anything, I should just be able to use it in my browser right?
RIGHT?
Nono!! As soon as I want to log into a third party Service using Google (older acccounts with the other choice only being Facebook) I need to "verify my identity". And the only option are my old smartphone who still have Gapps on it but are slow and don't accessible when I'm away!
For those who say: "Google is just beeing secure. They don't want anyone to steal your account.". I USE 2FA AND HAVE BACKUP CODES.
BEFORE DEGOOGLING MY DEVICE IT NEVER ASKED SUCH A THING!!! WHAT A PILE OF SPYING SHIT!!!
And the best part, after I remotely started my PC at home and just want to take a screenshot of the message for this post before just using a working session, the message didn't appear.
Somehow google decided that me logging in 15 mins later (same ip) proves my identity?!?!?!
IF THIS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO AI. FUCK THIS SHIT. GOOGLED SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE AN ONLINE CASINO BECAUSE THE CHANCE OF JUST GETTING LOGGED SEEMS COMPLETELY RANDOM!!!
(I also had this prior when using my smartphone browser. There I couldn't "circumvent" this and I was at home. But having this shit on my browser which should've a session is unacceptable.)7 -
Fuck Java and its related build tools.
Decided to throw caution to the wind and actually try to build a Java project, from scratch.
Install intellij, except it keeps complaining about the missing JDK, openjdk is installed but it doesn't like it.
Ok, whatever, I read that it's supposed to come with its own and so I point at that, no dice.
Ultimately I stumbled upon a stackoverflow post saying to just download the tgz JDK and just use that, I knew I could do that, but I wanted to use the tools the P environment suggested, but gave up.
Ok, so now I've got intellij and JDK installed, and I want to start my automatically generated project.
Except I now need gradle, fine, whatever, and now gradle complains it can't find the JDK...
Fucks sake... I was happy using Lein and Clojure, I didn't realise how fucking complicated it is to set up a Java IDE these days...9 -
Why do clients always try to use our lingo? They sound stupid. I read a post yesterday that said "no coding necessary. Just HTML and CSS" . Um. What? I also have a client that always tells me "I just need you to make some updates to the CSS with programming" . 😐🔫2

Previously: http://bu.tl/8t
I wanted to grab a script off another computer, and was getting strange scp errors. Turns out my use of .bashrc to hold all my aliases and custom variables was not "best practice," and scp was flipping out. I renamed my .bashrc files to .bash_profile, and scp worked properly from there. But then, I found that by default xterm doesn't consider an xterm session a "login." So I had to update my .Xresources file with an option for xterm, and re-merge it with xrdb. SO! I was ready to grab my script to set my openbox config the way I like it.
All the while, I noticed that the trackpad tapping didn't work, so that was my next hurdle to take. Next post! -
-_- every time I use windows recently, I'm reminded of why I haven't for years... I swear, the simplest things are so freaking hard to do. It's like, windows doesn't support W, but blog post A references program B, which converts Z into Y, and after spending 3 more hours googling I find programs C and D, which convert Y into X, and then X into W. Were you able to follow along? Yeah, neither can I. The logo comes up and I immediately get PTSD and start falling down Alice's rabbit hole only to realize I've just wasted 5 hours of my life...
Unfortunately, ASUS is horrible and refuses to make even the most basic, minimally-functioning Linux drivers, or provide anybody with the resources to do it themselves, and they put everything on GPIO chips capable of frying the laptop!!! I'm so freaking done...
I feel like an adult locked in a child-safe playroom full of baby toys...22 -
Finally back at home (after having some trouble with Deutsche Bahn).
It is cold and cloudy here.
It feels so weird to use a laptop. I was there (in Turkey) only with my phone, typing this post on my laptop. The screen is so god damn big.
My bed is very soft. My kitten got very strong and fluffy. He looks more muscular now lol. And it seems like he missed us :3.
I missed him and I missed my car that I did not like like a month ago. I really understood how much value it has. Besides of that my mind is clean now. It was like meditation.
Fuck that pussy ass description.
How was your day, fellas?6 -
There needs to be a class in schools before college called: "how to use a search engine" (HTUASE)
This alone would save countless frustration with people who won't have an f-ing clue and post on professional forums dumbshit questions. I often take the time to even provide the search engine keywords I use in an effort to get these people to think for themselves. I fully expect someone to respond back some day and say: "How you google dog?"2 -
finally...a nice round number of ++, hopefully they use more than an unsigned 8 bit otherwise I'm gonna overflow after this post! :P1

Whelp. I started making a very simple website with a single-page design, which I intended to use for managing my own personal knowledge on a particular subject matter, with some basic categorization features and a simple rich text editor for entering data. Partly as an exercise in web development, and partly due to not being happy with existing options out there. All was going well...
...and then feature creep happened. Now I have implemented support for multiple users with different access levels; user profiles; encrypted login system (and encrypted cookies that contain no sensitive data lol) and session handling according to (perceived) best practices; secure password recovery; user-management interface for admins; public, private and group-based sections with multiple categories and posts in each category that can be sorted by sort order value or drag and drop; custom user-created groups where they can give other users access to their sections; notifications; context menus for everything; post & user flagging system, moderation queue and support system; post revisions with comparison between different revisions; support for mobile devices and touch/swipe gestures to open/close menus or navigate between posts; easily extendible css themes with two different dark themes and one ugly as heck light theme; lazy loading of images in posts that won't load until you actually open them; auto-saving of posts in case of browser crash or accidental navigation away from page; plus various other small stuff like syntax highlighting for code, internal post linking, favouriting of posts, free-text filter, no-javascript mode, invitation system, secure (yeah right) image uploading, post-locking...
On my TODO-list: Comment and/or upvote system, spoiler tag, GDPR compliance (if I ever launch it haha), data-limits, a simple user action log for admins/moderators, overall improved security measures, refactor various controllers, clean up the code...
It STILL uses a single-page design, and the amount of feature requests (and bugs) added to my Trello board increases exponentially with every passing week. No other living person has seen the website yet, and at the pace I'm going, humanity will have gone through at least one major extinction event before I consider it "done" enough to show anyone.

CONTEST - Win big $$$ straight from Wisecrack!
For all those who participated in my original "cracking prime factorization" thread (and several I decided to add just because), I'm offering a whopping $5 to anyone who posts a 64 bit *product* of two primes, which I cant factor. Partly this is a thank you for putting up with me.
FIVE WHOLE DOLLARS! In 1909 money thats $124 dollars! Imagine how many horse and buggy rides you could buy with that back then! Or blowjobs!
Probably not a lot!
But still.
So the contest rules are simple:
Go to
https://asecuritysite.com/encryptio...
Enter 32 for the number of bits per prime, and generate a 64 bit product.
Post it here to enter the contest.
Products must be 64 bits, and the result of just *two* prime numbers. Smaller or larger bit lengths for products won't be accepted at this time.
I'm expecting a few entries on this. Entries will generally be processed in the order of submission, but I reserve the right to wave this rule.
After an entry is accepted, I'll post "challenge accepted. Factoring now."
And from that point on I have no more than 5 hours to factor the number, (but results usually arrive in 30-60 minutes).
If I fail to factor your product in the specified time (from the moment I indicate I've begun factoring), congratulations, you just won $5.
Payment will be made via venmo or other method at my discretion.
One entry per user. Participants from the original thread only, as well as those explicitly mentioned.
Limitations: Factoring shall be be done
1. without *any* table lookup of primes or equivalent measures, 2. using anything greater than an i3, 3. without the aid of a gpu, 4. without multithreading. 5. without the use of more than one machine.
FINALLY:
To claim your prize, post the original factors of your product here, after the deadline has passed.
And then I'll arrange payment of the prize.
You MUST post the factors of your product after the deadline, to confirm your product and claim your prize.99 -
What’s happening to devrant the other day I saw a post how ppl preferred git gui over cli, just now saw a post where light theme ppl united. Where is my elitist crew?

Oh I've had loads (and still have) of projects that got me to learn cool stuff! To keep them separate, I'll post some in different rants.
The thing that has helped me most over time (it didn't teach me cool things but it's very useful in general) is that, when api's have rare limits and you need/want to use them more often than is really allowed: you write your own alternatives.
I've especially had this with a geoip api's. Needed one for nearly every project but hit the rate limits with every goddamn service.
Wrote my own in a weekend and no rate limit hitting since then!3 -
Well since I cannot post my work setup due to post-its with 'important stuff' (NDA, not passwords, mind you!!😋) & a lot of curse words & other stuff.. I decided to shame, I mean share my home laptop.. Most of the time, he is lurking in the shadows, trying to upgrade shamelessly whenever I need to use it, occasionally he embarrasses me in front of clients, or makes my summer days at sea a living hell..
So here he is! Everyone, meet LOKI!! :/1 -
Best password manager?
I usually use the post-it-jutsu art to save my passwords.
But I think that when you have too much passwords, there should be a better way to store your info.20 -
A request:
"Hello, John! How are you today? Listen, if you have 15 minutes today - could you please do something for me? I need you to compare the results of test runs 1111 and 2222. Thank you!"
- How normal people read it:
* reads every word*
a grammar nazi takes a few minutes to look up whether the dash was the right symbol to use in this context.
appreciates the politeness
appreciates the personal touch (John, How are you)
- How a programmer reads it
".*compare\s.*(test|run).*\s(\\d{2,}).*\s(\\d{2,})\s*.*"
I would post this post as a joke/meme if it were one. Unfortunately, this is usually the case and devs, like regexes, sometimes tend to miss some important detail in the .* part.4 -

We have the funniest and weirdest conversations during lunch, most of them not dev related. Have been thinking about ranting them for a while now because they are just good fun.
The following one brought a bit of a discussion so It convinced me to post it because i would like to hear all of your opinions about this one:
Imagine that one day you come home and there is a (deep) clone of yourself having sex with your wife, what would you do?
We got divided into 3 groups mostly.
Group one would send him away and let him life his own life.
Group two would make use of the fact that there are 2 of them.
Group three would murder him, the explanation Why Was quite interesting, because it was the first instinct of them, it would also have been from the clone, that's why that had to.
Again I would like to hear what you all would do :)
Maybe if this one does okay I will post more stories11 -
!Rant; Week40
Honestly, before starting my post secondary education in Computer science I had wanted to become an architect.
Since I was maybe.... 10 years old all the way till the semester before graduating from highschool I was sold on becoming an architect.
I love design; Interior design, art, unique use of colors, architecture. I love systems that looked good and worked as well as they appeared.
Over the winter break of my grade 12 year a friend said to me, "Why don't you become a UI/UX developer? You love technology, software and design, why not go into a career where you practice on all three?".
I was surprised to hear that. It had honestly never really occurred to me since I had always told myself I would become an architect.
I guess that leaves me to where I am now. Still a student, but loving my time learning the details behind software development. I do not regret choosing Development over becoming an Architect.2 -
Best way to avoid procrastination : We tend to avoid commitments or to do large tasks as even visualizing them seems tiring and the longer it takes, the vulnerable we are to distractions
So I use this simple trick
I break my task into numerous sub tasks. For example if I need to finish a feature before day end, I would first list down all the cases I can think of in order and write them down using actual pen and paper.
I then start implementing them step by step.
I mark them checked once done.
It gives me a sense of achievement as I see those checks besides the sub tasks and I can also take breaks between steps.
So all it takes is just first five minutes of planning.
I had to do the above procedure, for this post as well.
Hope it helps fellow developers

@linuxxx’s recent post inspired me to try out linux again and see if I want to use it as my primary OS. My past experience with linux has always been endless fiddling with settings or drivers or whatnot, so I was wondering if you’ve got advice on what level of complexity is appropriate in solutions. E.g. if using the terminal and changing a bunch of config files is normal, or if that is generally unsustainable on the long term.
Thanks, I can’t wait to see how this experiment goes 😄18 -
ok so first post, i would like to say whoever the fuck decided <!----!> was gonna be comments in html, i fucking hate you. not only is it the most ugly comments system out of any language i know, but its so unusable to type out, i'd rather call <script> just to be able to put it in // half the time (if i ever use comments, i rarely do) python its one single character, js its 2 which yeah is kinda annoying but atleast its 2 of the same so i dont have to reach across the fucking keyboard, here comes html the language most devs need nowadays to promote a project at least saying reach across your entire keyboard to fucking write a comment.7
-
This is a long post and if someone comments without reading carefully I don't care about that person's opinion.
I have 3 accounts here, and that is a must have for me. Let me explain:
Let's think of people and who they are in layers.
The innermost layers are made of private and intimate things: fears, dreams, shames, basically things that are mostly shared with very close people, like family, best friends, and specially significant others.
On the other hand, outermost layers are the public persona, who you are as a citizen, who you are in your profesion, and so on.
So, you wouldn't normally tell your boss about your favorite sex positions.
Let's also say there can be layers in the middle, and all the layers sometimes overlap, but let's not get too deep into this as I think I got the point across.
Here on I explain the original thesis.
I am a developer, and as such I want to fulfill my needs on dev communities, one of them being devrant.
I wish to learn from other devs, I expose my (sometimes controversial) points of view. I rant about annoying shit in the workplace.
But also, at some level, I wish to be taken seriously as a developer, I wish to build a reputation, and I wish to be accepted, even in a shallow social level. There is a social factor to what we do and it's totally normal.
Now, the problem is that I also would want to express my inner self.
So what I do is I don't use my main account for that, I use another, in fact 2 other accounts.
There are several reasons for that:
* I want to hide intimate shit from trolls.
Imagine I griefpost about a loved one that died, then later found myself in a heated discussion about some language, and then some troll comments something like "I'm glad your x died". i wouldn't react very well.
* I want to keep my posts consistent.
If people become interested in what I post as a dev, then they are going to expect dev related stuff from me. If I start posting like controversial points of view, that's not very cool because I'd be doing like a bait n switch on them.
* I want to maintain a reputation, and I want to not get banned on the main account
Reputation as a profesional is a real thing, and it shouldn't be affected by your personal shit.
Also sometimes you argue, and things get heated, and sometimes you get suspended or banned.
You try your hardest to be respectful, but in some communities, some mods are trigger happy.
By restricting this on your alt account, you're in a way promising that you'll have the upmost behaviour on your dev account because that means being professional.
Now, I said I had 2 other accounts.
The reason for having 2 is because I separate two layers:
In the 2nd account I am open and direct regarding my points of view, and more argumentative, but still trying to be relatively civil. I would also post things that might be controversial or not popular. I try to be real basically.
You can conclude that the 2nd account is the one posting this, since this post could trigger some people.
In the 3rd account, I talk about intimate shit like traumas, fears, emotional pain, things I know I'll get support for (the same support I give others when in need) and are not controversial in any way.
This way I can vent painful things and avoid trolls.
Cool people appreciate it when you're transparent about your shortcoming and dark thoughts.
But it takes one asshole in a high horse to judge you. And sometimes you need to give that asshole the middle finger without being afraid of ruining your reputation
or getting banned,
or being scared of that asshole laughing about your intimate shit (again, I use this account for that)
I know it sounds like I have multiple personalities but I swear I'm ok, and hopefully what I said makes sense. People might say "don't use alt accounts, go to another site", but I find that devrant has some interesting people.
The obvious downside is that you end up knowing people more than what they assume, because you interact with them through different accounts.
This is kinda shady, but I'm not interested in taking advantage of others anyway so...27 -
(Long post)
ARE YOU SERIOUS??
I never really used Facebook but I did use Instagram until around a month ago when GDPR kicked in and they asked every user about their age. For shits and giggles I entered "1 year old" which was followed by the app crashing every time I open it and on the web site a message like this:
"You are too young to use Instagram. You will have 14 days until your account gets deleted. If you think we made a mistake you can send us your personal id."
As if I sent anything personal to FB on purpose! Then so it be, I said. I downloaded my data (images and account details) and after two weeks I couldn't login anymore and I checked on a friend's phone within Instagram: My account was gone.
NOW LOOK WHAT I GOT TODAY:
A NEWSLETTER from Instagram! "Check out new posts by X, Y and 8 others!"
Now, these aren't new... I would get these emails when I havent logged in for a while. But seriously? My accounts should be GONE!
Sooo I logged in again. And when I tried I got this (freely translated):
"Apparently, you requested to delete this account. For more information, visit the help area: http://help.instagram.com/ (403) (/accounts/login/ajax/)"
So that's it. Yeah sure, "deleted". I didn't request the delete, Instagram did so on it's own. So it doesn't even listen to it's own commands...
Guys, where is this world heading5 -
Hey guys, does someone knows if Twitter colludes with other websites and/or services to collect data, because I thought that privacy-wise, Twitter wasn’t as bad as Facebook as I just use Twitter to follow youtubers and Donald Trump(to keep up with his craziness) and never post anything. But I just got a Python Machine Learning ad just. And it’s spooky because I’m currently (trying to be) learning Deep Learning and Google knows it (🤬🤬 you udemy ads) but Twitter!!?? Do they have a way to link my account??6

Here's an idea.
I wonder if a politician who work as a dev can belong here...
=======================
Content Boundaries and Use of devRant
Rule 2.
Politics: You may not post rants regarding politics unless they are directly related to a current event directly impacting development/tech. We've gathered lots of user feedback on this rule, and it is widely appreciated as devRant is a platform to have fun and somewhat of an escape for developers, who want to keep real-world issues and controversies off the app.3 -

I seriously don't get it guys, can you answer to this post with your job and the os you use?

2. navigate to devrant.com
3. enter your username and password

5. post a comment "SUCCESS"
6. do all of the above w/o using your hands (e.g. use your toes)19 -
We are switching to an infinite scroll mode for our app. I told the backend dev in my project (we're just 2 people) I need an API to get more than one post at once.
He told me to use a loop to call the old URL 15 times.
...Not sure if stupid or just too lazy4 -
Finding out how not to do it.
An example, learning how to parse HTML, and finding a stackoverflow post with the answer "use regex" triggers tech junkies so much that they actually comment a mostly accepted way of doing something.3 -
I would like to present new super API which I have "pleasure" to work with. Documentation (very poor written in *.docx without list of contents) says that communication is json <-> json which is not entirely true. I have to post request as x-www-form with one field which contains data encoded as json.
Response is json but they set Content-Type header as text/html and Postman didn't prettify body by default...
I'm attaching screenshot as a evidence.
I can't understand why people don't use frameworks and making other lives harder :-/3 -
guy creates very cool looking, advanced css effects library that went viral
guy puts it up on GitHub
guy writes a ranty post and pins it to top the of issues with stuff like "i'm not going to make this a module or library that can be installed, and also don't try because i've already created a seperate repo for that" ON AN OPEN SOURCE LIBRARY
dude, you already open-sourced it, people are going to use it however they want
idk, just found this to be a very weird vibe, thought i'd share. thoughts?13 -
Ok I need a second post for this week. A tech lead decided to have a one on one meeting with me in public on the clients' floor where he decided to get angry at me (in public mind you) about using too many design patterns and inheritance because that "makes the code too hard to read. Instead use a lot of if-else's like I do." So not just is he an idiot, he did this in public on a floor with people who didn't know programming so now I look awful. I was furious.2

Spam filter update!
You now all can control the bots.
Suspicious post count of user + suspicious comments is now blocked too! Like here: https://devrant.com/rants/11507563/...
Also, if some one is spamming, just say @ragnar in the comments and the spam bots will come to help in less than a minute.
I used @ragnar, since that's the name of the anti spam system but it was already an existing use. He left dR, so fuck him! :)
Don't abuse the power guys.11 -
Just wanted to code some better public transportation route calculator (better ux) and found out that the pt company offers an API.
EVERY FUCKING REQUEST HAS TO BE SENT AGAINST THE SAME FUCKING ENDPOINT IN A POST REQUEST WITH THE ORIGINAL REQUEST AS FUCKING XML IN THE FUCKING BODY. At least they offer xsd files... BUT THATS NO FUCKING HELP. At least not that much of a help. AND THE DOCUMENTATION DOES NOT STATE A SINGLE FUCKING EXAMPLE OF HOW TO USE THAT FUCKING ENDPOINT. I FOUND THIS OUT BY SENDING RANDOM REQUESTS TO THE ENDPOINT TRYING TO REVERSE ENGINEER THE EXISTING FUCKING FRONTEND AND NOW I NOTICED THAT 80% OF THE FUCKING DOCUMENTED FEATURES ARE DISABLED BECAUSE: NOT FUCKING SUPPORTED!!!
MAAAN WHY DO YOU DO THIS.
Alternatively I'd use the GTFS files they provide but THEY ARE FUCKING INCOMPLETE AND DONT STICK TO THE EXISTING STANDARD GOOGLE DEFINED... They also offer a different propietary format... BUT THATS FUCKING UNDOCUMENTED AND FUCKING INCOMPLETE... -
Some people of devRant are astonishingly stupid.
I post a rant of Ryan Dahl where he says he don't like the unnecessary complexity of modern software. It's an obvious UX rant, but @Crost says that it's about rushing releases and writing sloppy code to "tick the item off my list and solve the problem". @Crost and other boubas, if Ryan's vision was more widespread, macOS, the OS you all hate so much, wouldn't have existed because Linux would have the best UX ever.
I post a rant about Google algo being nasty and throwing triggering shit at me. I previously posted stuff like this, Root confirmed that it works just the way I think it works, it's a manipulative piece of crap. But @Oktokolo says that "The algorithm literally just gives you same of the stuff you just saw", well, I don't know, nice view of the problem for a guy with no computer and no smartphone, @Oktokolo! All that "youtube recommendations gathered us together on some obscure video" comments, and you still don't get it.
I post a rant about how I redesigned a fucking color wheel icon. It shows a "before-after" pic and the colors are obviously the same, but fucking @Oktokolo be popping up again, telling me that I have eye condition (!) that makes me see more blues than yellows.
No wonder you guys don't know how to use CSS, the simplest programming language (yes, it's a programming language).
No wonder smart people like SortOfTested just leave.
I still refuse to believe that devRant user base consists of stupid people exclusively. Perhaps they are just average, and I'm the genius with my Aspergers just getting way more information out of my environment like I always do.20 -
Today I created my first shell script for automation.
I have a git repository I use for backing up documents at the training centre I'm at for work. Not a specific project, just all of the documents and miscellaneous stuff. The need for this came about because they re-image the computers every month with a new version of windows (Because they're too cheap to register windows). And I can't risk forgetting to copy all the files onto my USB drive the day before they re-image.
So at the end of each day I open a git bash and type:
git add .
git commit -m "Backup - dd/mm/yy"
git push
Not a particularly laborious task but repetitive and time consuming.
So I decided to create a .sh script to automate the process
(The idea originally occurred because of this post: https://devrant.com/rants/329221/...)
So after about half an hour fiddling about with dates and $ signs, I came up with GitBackup.sh:
git add .
today=$(date '+%d-%m-%y')
commitMsg="Backup - "$today
git commit -m "$commitMsg"
git push origin master
Not much but proud to call it my first automation script.2 -
I guess I'll post my first rant, rant.
(Aka rant that wasn't a pun)
The Ipads our school use all have the same code, 0000. Even though about all the features are blocked... They never blocked the ability to change the pass code. No one would know who did it, and there would be 9999 possible choices for the new IPad. Who ever though it was a good idea to let highschoolers (12-18 year old) find this out.2 -
Trying to re-type a massive essay I lost because the app refreshed for some reason. I'll try to keep it short (spoiler: I lied).
Recently, I had a conversation with a couple of non-tech people about AI and the fear of computers making humans obsolete. I have some strong (borderline ranty) opinions about this, and thought I'd post here to see what reaction is get.
This is not a "machines will destroy us" post, it's more about the very legitimate great of losing jobs.
- AI is a tool. It's main use would to be help optimise the more complex routine tasks and free up people's time to be more creative in their jobs. Basically, it's the next step of automation.
- Human intuition can never be replaced. Sometimes, things just seem a bit off. Sure, an AI would avoid ever getting in that situation, but only if it had learnt it in the past. A human will always have to be at the helm of any such system.
- Achieving true intelligence and sentience is like trying to travel at the speed of light. The closer you get, the more challenges you face.
- Getting hyped by sensationalist news that claims the end is nigh because two computers optimised the language they used to communicate when trying to reach a goal is stupid. All this shows is that the tech is working as expected and the systems can optimise on the fly. To me, this was a pretty awesome moment.
Now, I'm not saying dystopia is impossible, neither am I saying that it is inevitable. Just like any tool presented to us, if we use it responsibly, we can make life and society a lot better.5 -
So I quit after 10 years of service to start my own company. Never had the resources or tools to put the full documentation effort in unfortunately. Trying my best for a handover. The board have started to treat me like shit, no respect after a decade of propping these assholes up. I have offered my services post employment but they are being difficult.
Just got an email and call from our data centre... they are shutting down the site and can't relocate our boxes physically due to the ip ranges in use. Only option is to migrate the sites and code to new boxes. Which means patching of db and code for newer versions.
Do I leave them with this mess since they are being assholes or try to sort it properly in my last few weeks while I also document..3 -
I'm considering getting to learn to use Linux, however, I have No idea what distribution I should start out with, any recommendations? If you know a good tutorial to getting started, feel free to post :)23

My mom is a basic user that needs to use only basic apps to chat and speak with family, post photos and play one or two games.
She is always ranting about how difficult is to do simple things. And she is mostly right.
Like, where are my fucking photos gone?
Why is facebook/whasapp/whatever different today, where are the fucking buttons gone?
what the fuck happened (when while clicking something a update windows popup and you click something else). Why the buttons are so small (when you want to close a fucking ad windows with a little invisible fucking "x" somewhere and you click the ad instead)?
I don't want no fucking cookies.
Why after windows update my fucking game doesn't work anymore. Why I can't hear anything through the fucking skype?
The fact that she knows I'm one of the moron who builds kind of not-usable and buggy fucking things, doesn't help.2 -
To the person who talked about termux in a post, thank you. I tryed to find said post but to no avail.
I've been frustrated because I can't use servers or run Linux in Android 8 and termux is a bliss.

Public REST (-inspired) API. Should I skip numeric IDs because it's easy for consumers to snoop around?
Example:
POST api/foo
201 Created api/foo/69
Uh, I'll get 68 just because I can. Hopefully it returns Unauthorized, unless we some kind of bug.
Is it just security by obscurity if I use, like, guids or something instead of sequental IDs?17 -
Ladies, gentlemen and fellow Aussie ranters....
Today is the day, I finnaly admit defeat on running GMS2 on a Linux distro...
Depsite the use of multiple wine version, swapping between 32 and 64 bit installations, throwing mono in as well as attempting with .NET core, even with all of the above at once (Don't ask).
With many hours behind me and many... many... many broken installs and dead VM's, I am admitting defeat.
The war between me and wanting to use a product I paid for where ever I wanted has come to an end and I am the only casualty in this war.

Morning guys. How are your desks? Do you use normal desk or maybe standing one? Do you keep your desk clean or maybe it's more like a mess? Haha!
If someone is curious about my hardware on the photo:
- Dell XPS 15 9550
- Marshall Mode Headphones
- 16gb pendrive that's in business card format but just the important part of it as you can see
Post your desks!

Are you familiar with chess? What classes/objects and methods/functions would you use to implement the game of chess? Who knows if checkmate is reached? What about timed games?
It always leads to an interesting discussion and you can easily throw out prodding questions if they get stuck. I've never had anybody give me the exact same answer, and it's been complimented post-interview a handful of times.13 -
2nd post progress of this project https://devrant.com/rants/9985730/...
I went to shop to buy missing ir diode and bluetooth for arduino.
Launched arduino today with ir receiver and I managed to reverse engineer protocol.
Turns out it’s just NEC remote codes.
I used this library https://arduino.cc/reference/en/... to easily send and receive ir signals.
Everything took me whole day cause I’m rookie in hardware.
I can now remote control medion md 19500 using arduino.
Next step is to make it riding itself.
I need to measure speed and turn angle with error rates.
I will probably use pen and paper and let vacuum cleaner draw angle for me and after that I will use the most modern, accurate and cheapest angle measurement tool that is protractor - school welcome back
Speed can be more complicated and need another external complicated tool that is tape measure and a clock.
I also bought second robot because I got this stupid idea to allow people to control robots using internet.2 -

So I've just seen a post on Facebook looking for a website designer. Which need to use Vue.js and Laravel.
So what your looking for is a website developer and not a designer.
Why do agencies and employers/clients using the terms "website designer" for development now as well. Design and development are separate.8 -
There has been a post today about the existence of too many js frameworks. Which reminds me of this awesome post https://hackernoon.com/how-it-feels...
At first I thought someone was corpseposting, as it is my understanding that the js ecosystem is calming down a bit. But then I noticed that post got almost 20 upvotes. So here's my thoughts:
(I'm not sure what I'm ranting about here, as it feels kinda broad after writing it. I think it's kinda valid anyhow.)
I'm ok with someone expressing frustration with js. But complaining about progress is definitely off to me.
How is too many frameworks a bad thing?
How does the variety and creation of more modern frameworks affect negatively developers?
Does it make it hard to understand each of these new frameworks?
Well, there's no need to. Just because it has a logo and some nice badges and says it will make you happy doesn't mean you should use it.
You just stick to the big boys in the ecosystem and you'll be fine for a while.
Does it make you feel compelled to migrate the stack of every project you did?
Well, don't. If you don't like being on the bleeding edge of js, then just stick to whatever you're using, as long as it's good code.
But if a lot of companies decided to migrate to react (among others frameworks), it's because they like the upsides: the code is faster to write, easier to test and more performant.
In general, I'm more understanding/empathic with beginner js programmers.
But I have for real heard experienced devs in real life complain about having to learn new frameworks, like they hate it.
"I just want to learn a single framework and just master it throughout my life" and I think they're lowering the bar.
There's people that for real expect occupying positions for life, make money, but never learn a new framework.
We hold other practitioners to high standards (like pilots or doctors), but for some reason, some programmers feel like they're ok with what they know for life.
As if they couldn't translate all they learned with one framework to another.
Meanwhile our lives are becoming more and more intertwined with technology and demand some pretty high standards. Standards that historically have not been met, according to thousands of people screaming to their devices screens.
Even though I think the "js can be frustrating" sentiment is valid, the statement 'too many js frameworks is bad' is not.
I think a statement like 'js frameworks can go obsolete very quickly' is more appropriate.
By saying too many js frameworks is a bad thing you're
1) Making a conspiracy theory as if js devs were working in tandem to make the ecosystem hard,
But people do whatever they want. Some create packages, others star/clone/use them.
2) Making a taboo out of a normal itch, creating.
"hey you're a libdev? just stop, ok? stop"
"Are you a creative person? Do you know a way to solve a problem in an easier way than some famous package? it doesn't matter, don't you dare creating a new package."
I'm not gonna say the js world is perfect. The js world is frantic, savage, evolves aggressively.
You could say that it (accidentally) gives the middle finger to end users, but you could also say that it just sets the bar higher.
I liked writing jquery code in the past, but at the same time I didn't like adding features/fixing bugs on it. It was painful.
So I'm fine with a better framework coming along after a few years and stealing their userbase, as it happens almost universally in the programming world, the difference with js is that the cycle is faster.
Even jquery's creator embraced React.

Every time I read someone reply to a post with "lol" I stop for a moment and imagine myself actually laughing out loud to that post. I've got to say, only under ~1% of such posts were actually worth lol'ing. Other times laughing out loud to whatever is there would be retarded at best.
So either I'm a bum with only notions of a sense of humour OR there are far too many retards laughing out loud to basically anything.
Or perhaps there are too many idiots who use 'lol' without knowing what it means.
Or those people so desperately want others' attention that they lie to others pretending to like what they say/do/write by saying "what you did there made me feel so good that I burst in loud laughter".
This is stupid.
If you don't laugh OUT LOUD - then don't say that you do.
If you are not in immediate danger threatening to your life - then don't say you are LITERALLY DYING.
FFS, is it THAT hard?26 -
So here's mine!
It's a github for the more artistic; a place for designers, photographers, and stylists to post their work. You can choose to make your work interactive, so others can comment, or you can simply present your work. A professional option is given to present your work in a professional, clean manner with a short URl to attach to a CV or such.
Users choose whether to release their work under Creative Commons, or which attributes they wish, so students can use them in their research.
It also serves as a community and a place to collaborate.6 -

Following on from my previous SQL script to find prime numbers
https://devrant.com/rants/2218452/...
I wondered whether there was a way to improve it by only checking for prime factors. It feels really dirty to use a WHILE loop in SQL, but I couldn't think of another way to incrementally use the already found prime numbers when checking for prime factors.
It's fast though, 2 mins 15 seconds for primes under 1,000,000 - previous query took over an hour and a half.5 -
Hi developers.... so i just feel like posting this post
I'm a self-taught developer its been 6 years now and i managed to get myself a job this year at a tech startup and they actually developed this developer department just for me..... with the promise that if i manage to get this department up and running I'll get a higher position as the company grows
So it's been 4 months now and i think i'm doing exceptionally well as a developer since I'm the only developer in that organization..... and some how I feel like if i use my problem solving skills to work on other real world problems not just code and designing systems..... like bringing solutions to real none code related problems i could actually achieve more and make a big difference
but I'm actually learning a lot and hope i'll become more and do more within this organization and grab that top position role3 -
Just signed up for this site, took me three minutes to figure out how to post a rant.
Do the designers know what a call to action is? Where in this screenshot tells me "post a rant here" or "click here to write your first" or "new rant" or even a plus symbol, pencil, paper, or any sort of symbology?
Nope. It's in a vague, almost invisible menu with a symbol of three dots that usually means "things you don't normally use might be in here". The main function of the site. Tucked away where nobody can see it.
Bad UX has no excuse in 2020.14 -
This is not about devRant… but it might as well be.
Imagine public forum. Everyone can read and post, everyone can comment. And there's no way to send a private message.
You use said forum for years. Whether you like it or not, you form alliances, friendships, frenemieships and engage all kinds of social contracts. There's no ro(ot)ster either, so you keep all that in your head, until one day you need a social contract formalized — exchange contact info. With Steven.
You can't just “@Steven text me, here's my phone”, that's borderline suicidal. You yearn a safe haven. A proxy that'd allow privacy. So you quickly spin up a service, let's say Discord (it wasn't Discord, but close enough), post a link, and within seconds Steven joins… He and seven other Stevens.
So you send each a unique sentence, a 2fa token so to speak, and ask them to post it on said devRant-like forum — they can delete it later after all. And a few minutes later there's eleven Stevens posting garbage faster than mods can delete, because whitespace power. But you bravely sift through that shit until the correct Steven rants “I'm blue, da-ba-dee da-ba-da”, and finally you know which Discord Steven is blue, so you can privately chat about colours.
And then Steven's 75 years old, well-reputed account gets banned on devRant for posting along other spamming Stevens. And you can't even PM administration, because devRant is a public forum without PM-ing indeed.28 -
When I saw a blog post said you need more than 1 cup of coffee to get AWS configuration done, I didn't believe it. Now I know... it's true. very true. It takes forever to make use of your config. By the time it's done, you already switch to something else.

I couldn't easily find it again and I didn't screenshot it yesterday. But this is not made up.
Yesterday I found a Sponsored post on Facebook about a class for one of WordPress premium theme with visual builder. Well it's more like a workshop rather than a class.
The description said if you want to have stable income, want to work from home, want to experience a *real developer life*, etc etc.
REAL DEVELOPER LIFE. No kidding.
I do WordPress websites. Yes I use premium themes. Yes I do visual builder. Fuck but I don't call that work real dev work and I'm not proud of those projects as real dev works.
In the end, the hungrier guy gets the bread. I guess. I haven't thought of providing such courses at all.
PS : the mentioned theme is Divi from Elegantthemes. -
After a lot of work, the new factorization algorithm has a search space thats the factorial of (log(log(n))**2) from what it looks like.
But thats outerloop type stuff. Subgraph search (inner loop) doesn't appear to need to do any factor testing above about 97, so its all trivial factors for sequence analysis, but I haven't explored the parameter space for improvements.
It converts finding the factors of a semiprime into a sequence search on a modulus related to
OIS sequence A143975 a(n) = floor(n*(n+3)/3)
and returns a number m such that n=pq, m%p == 0||(p*i), but m%q != 0||(q*k)
where i and k are respective multiples of p and q.
This is similar in principal to earlier work where I discovered that if i = p/2, where n=p*q then
r = (abs(((((n)-(9**i)-9)+1))-((((9**i)-(n)-9)-2)))-n+1+1)
yielding a new number r that shared p as a factor with n, but is coprime with n for q, meaning you now had a third number that you could use, sharing only one non-trivial factor with n, that you could use to triangulate or suss out the factors of n.
The problem with that variation on modular exponentiation, as @hitko discovered,
was that if q was greater than about 3^p, the abs in the formula messes the whole thing up. He wrote an improvement but I didn't undertsand his code enough to use it at the time. The other thing was that you had to know p/2 beforehand to find r and I never did find a way to get at r without p/2
This doesn't have that problem, though I won't play stupid and pretend not to know that a search space of (log(log(n))**2)! isn't an enormous improvement over state of the art,
unless I'm misunderstanding.
I haven't posted the full details here, or sequence generation code, but when I'm more confident in what my eyes are seeing, and I've tested thoroughly to understand what I'm looking at, I'll post some code.
hitko's post I mentioned earlier is in this thread here:

Indie game devs: I have a couple of questions for you guys, sorry for my naivity and the subjectivity of some of the questions.
Is it as fun as it sounds?
Do you work as a team?
What tech/language do you use?
What platform/os do you produce games for?
Is your primary income from making games?
Im asking because I would like to get into it, but want to get a realistic view of what it's like.
Thanks guys. Please also take this chance to post your work.4 -

The dangers of PHP eval()
Yup. "Scary, you better make use of include instead" — I read all the time everywhere. I want to hear good case scenarios and feel safe with it.
I use the eval() method as a good resource to build custom website modules written in PHP which are stored and retrieved back from a database. I ENSURED IS SAFE AND CAN ONLY BE ALTERED THROUGH PRIVILEGED USERS. THERE. I SAID IT. You could as well develop a malicious module and share it to be used on the same application, but this application is just for my use at the moment so I don't wanna worry more or I'll become bald.
I had to take out my fear and confront it in front of you guys. If i had to count every single time somebody mentions on Stack Overflow or the comments over PHP documentation about the dangers of using eval I'd quit already.
Tell me if I'm wrong: in a safe environment and trustworthy piece of code is it OK to execute eval('?>'.$pieceOfCode); ... Right?
The reason I store code on the database is because I create/edit modules on the web editor itself.
I use my own coded layers to authenticate a privileged user: A single way to grant access to admin functions through a unique authentication tunnel granting so privileged user to access the editor or send API requests, custom htaccess rules to protect all filesystem behind the domain root path, a custom URI controller + SSL. All this should do the trick to safely use the damn eval(), is that right?!
Unless malicious code is found on the code stored prior to its evaluation.
But FFS, in such scenario, why not better fuck up the framework filesystem instead? Is one password closer than the database.
I will need therapy after this. I swear.
If 'eval is evil' (as it appears in the suggested tags for this post) how can we ensure that third party code is ever trustworthy without even looking at it? This happens already with chrome extensions, or even phone apps a long time after reaching to millions of devices.11 -
My fiance is also a developer, we moved to a bigger city and she is looking for a job. She lost all motivation and doesn't want to look at any code anymore... Not even my freelance projects.. Does anyone have any motivational things to say? She doesn't use devrant, but i'll show her this post.3

IPhone speech to text has come a long way. Definitely has improved. Real-time dictation rather than batching it.
I am currently doing approximately 50 percent of my rants by voice. In fact the rank you are reading I did by voice.
You can easily do punctuation such as a period, new paragraph, new line, caps and lower case. The speech recognition is excellent even with my New York accent and it learns the more you use it. Rarely does it get a word wrong.
Editing still has to be done manually and is a pain but that may change as dragon already allows you to do in-line editing. iOS speech to text has already surpassed dragon in some facets.
I do have to press the add new and post buttons at this Time to post my rants. But that may change as the enhanced dictation on the map allows you access to specific commands.
I will keep you informed of progress and I will be testing on android over the next few days as well.4 -
In SublimeText, I noticed that my markdowns formatting was not showing up correctly— I decided to download the new markdown package altogether hoping for some kind of update/fix. Turns out the package comes with a super ugly color theme which overrides the default theme of SublimeText. After some googling and experimenting, I found way to override this through the package settings. I always use git through my terminal but I thought let’s try to use git through my code editor and see how it works. I downloaded the git package but then I notice that git tool shows status and all correctly but doesn’t push files to GitHub (it says fatal: unable to read current working directory). Then I download another application called SublimeMerge. It works correctly on its own (pushes files to GitHub) but SublimeText is still not doing the same. Then I tinker around with my SSH keys hoping for a fix, but nothing works. I even go to stackoverflow and search for a solution but I find nothing (I even wrote a post asking for a solution but no replies till now). Fuck it! I now open the file with VSCode. Open terminal within VSCode and add/push/commit through it and everything works perfectly. So goodbye SublimeText I guess 👋🏾11

And fucking stackoverflow ..what the fuck is wrong if I forget an single comma during posting a question ..what the fuck..and you know what the real feeling is when I post a issue on stackoverflow and I got nothing from them expect some minus points...and then the holy fucking coder inside me tells me to solve that fucking problem and I feel like having dope bitch. For a new microservice we were designing, I recently had a design discussion with a team member on creating REST endpoints for a new entity. This discussion went on for almost 3 hours, most of the time was spent on why to have two endpoints for getting this resource, one is a POST using a graphQL-like query and another one is a GET using unique ID. I said, the client-side use case is different, one is a dashboard where search results need to be shown based on multiple fields and the unique ID won't be available there because it is a system generated value, second one will be used when the unique ID is present in the client as a result of previous search result. Their responses will be similar, first returns a list of entities, second returns a single entity of the same structure.
Then came the next argument: if both APIs are returning same response, why do we need two different requests ?
It was like saying, because 5+6=11, any sum of two numbers resulting in 11 should always use 5 & 6.
Are people so frustrated of working remotely all the time that they come with such weird arguments ?1 -
Its 5:32 am been working on a new social media website opened up devrant to check whatsup and found out people really have amazing pc setups ♥️ I couldn’t post mine because my laptop has a broken keyboard and i use a usb keyboard also my laptop overheats so i stuck skateboard wheels to two of the back supports its an i5 processor with 3gb of ram but I love it,its what you do with your resources that really matters right ? with that broken keyboard i created a website for my college department which now 720 students and teachers use and we have around 8k entries in 3 days. Running the website on a local server at my college so no money spent on hosting. Taking small steps towards my goals and hopefully one day i’ll publish my setup1

The fuck? I'm trying to automate login for an asp.net website from a C# console app using HttpWebRequests. I used Fiddler to see how the login happens and how the browser obtains the session and auth cookies from the server. When I replicate the same procedure from C#, I am able to get both cookies withoth a problem, but when I try to use them to get data about the user, I get a 500 ISE. What the actual fuck? I've double-checked every single header and the URLs and it's doing literally the same thing as chrome: Get asp session id (POST)-> get an auth cookie (POST username and passwd) -> interact with the site using the session id and auth cookie (GET). And obiviously I don't have access to the server logs... :/2

I think I just came up with my next app idea while writing a blog post:
--Sometimes Ignorance Can Really Be Bliss?--
I like to be in know so I read a lot. My reading list will never end as there’s always more I can know.
Part of the problem is lack of clear priorities but all these articles and books are just so interesting….
I probably spend 4-5 hours every weekend reading… mostly from my Inbox. Yes I try to clear some daily but again, I keep a lot just because they look interesting.
I also use Boxbe and recently setup some Automatic Cleanup… but sort of hurts when I see an email I want to read but then it’s gone tomorrow…
**An App Idea!**
What if I never see these actual emails. But my computer does?
What if I can use it to generate a list of articles from all my emails and just show a few in a Weekly Digest?
Thoughts? anyone else have this problem?
But the key is still, never actually knowing what you missed!8 -
Ok, all of us have seen the memes about how nasty Stack Overflow can be, this is why I usually try to find an existing SO post to read instead of making one. This time however, I found an error that I couldn't fix. A nasty C runtime error. I decided to ask a SO question for help, and awaited answers. I came back, and the question had been flagged to require more info, so I added more. I came back later, and someone told me I was doing it the hard way, and I should be using Visual Studio (I'm on Visual Studio Code), which ticks me off, because I don't want to use the hacky way around the problem, then this same person closed the question! They didn't even answer it, they just offered a simple workaround then closed without an answer. Man, SO sucks sometimes.15

Twitter comments are shit
How the fuck to use them? Why don't they just show one under another? If post has more than 2 replies it can be clicked to open its direct replies, some of them are shown in main thread, some of them are shown under opened thread. Some replies from main thread are shown under child thread. And to make it even worse any comment of sub thread can be expanded as well showing some random replies that could be expanded recursievly so you may end in main thread again. It is just impossible to read all replies in chonological order. Show me the moron who made this, I wanna kill him....1 -

Hey Devrant friends!, i really hope everyone is doing very well today, and that also their week is treating them very well!, i'd like to say to everyone here i'm very sorry for my level of activity within the community.
Approximately one month ago on the 21/01/2019 i lost my best friend and fellow companion for the last 13 and a half years, therefore things have been quite difficult emotionally and just overall :-( though with time things should only get better, (I'm positive) .
Now to more of a positive part of my post :'D, i'd love to ask my fellow developers the following question, if you could help me out i'd be very much grateful!, so for awhile now i had a hobby of messing around with the stock market, and have been re-searching a specific field.
That would be investment-banks such as JP.Morgan, Morgan Stanley etc. What sort of languages would they be using, currently I've been using , C#,C++,Java, Py(learning) :'D, though im not so sure if its a good idea to be juggling so many languages at once, Also i'd love to know do they have opportunities in which allow students like myself to visit such places and see the technology behind the trading and what developers use? i'm really curious, Also are there such positions in which developers work with traders? not really 'quant' type positions, developers who work in the section?.
Friends, i'd like to thank you very much for reading my post, i know it may be quite lengthy and most likely all over the place (im sorry!) , i'm very grateful you have taken the time to do so :-), i really appreciate it!.
I really wish everyone the absolute best <3.
Thank you
Milo <38 -
Fucking Fucking Fuck.... fucking acumatica and fucking IIS.
I’m not shitting on CS or ASP but the fucking windows server/IIS implementation. No one should use that shit. Fucking horrendous garbage.
Literally every goddamn thing we do in acumatica has major fucking gotchas.
Today apparently goddamn concurrency is fucked cause IIS and acumatica. I love friggen obscure issues being only documented in a friggen comment on a damn post in a random difficult to search corner of the friggin internet.4 -
So i ranted about how bad the snapchat app was in terms of design and performance a few days ago here and at a couple of other places and the general conscience was that I should use it for a few days and i would like it.
Well, here's what i have to say. IT STILL SUCKS!
I tried to use it every day to keep up with what others are doing and sometimes try to post but i really don't like his bad the app is. It doesn't make me want to use it. Its a battery hog. It fucking drinks through my battery like nobody's business. The v10 update made it a bit better but it still sucks.
I still don't like the UX design but I have come to hate it less. It still sucks though.
I still don't like that there isn't a proper way to discover people. The "discover" tab is just paid advertisement.5 -
I just realized that I didn't post anything since the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
But I'm a force ghost now, so I should use devRant more -
Hey @dfox , after using this awesome app for some time now I thought about Posting some feedback about some stuff which may can be improved in future releases:
Maybe it would make sense to seperate the notifications in two areas: one area for your received likes and one area for comments made on your posts or posts you comments on. I often find myself not seeing when someone commented on a post because of the many like notifications.
Speaking about the likes I sometimes click on the Username to see who liked a post. If you don't hit the username you are taken to the post instead of the profile. Maybe it would make sense to make the username a little bit bigger or give it some button like layout to make it easier to click, because I often find myself not hitting the username correctly.
Dark Mode is a great Feature, but it would be even better if you could choose when to use darkmode and when to use lightmode based on time maybe, so that those two themes automatically switch.
These are just my 2 cents, which in my opinion would make the app even better than it is and which you may consider in some future releases.
All in all I really like this app and the Community is great, so thanks for creating it. :)4 -
I'm so tired of fs issues with webpack/react. fucking useless piece of shit. I look online and it looks like it's a pain in the ass for anyone actually using a modern stack. Literally just trying to use mailjet's API to send emails from a React app and I've been solving dependency issues for fucking hours because of the MANY node modules it requires. requires fs, dns, tls, and dgram for a FUCKING post request because mailjet makes you use their node package.1

I'm currently studying for my exams and I don't have much time left before the first one.
I have dual-boot on my laptop and I almost always use Linux, this morning I used it and while I was studying I updated the software in the background.
Then I powered off the laptop.
This afternoon I powered it on and it booted to grub shell. Just updating the system screwed everything.
FOR FUCK SAKE LINUX I FUCKING NEED TO STUDY.
I'm posting this rant here because I could not post it on r/linux subreddit, I'm sure my post would be deleted and this is sad. Those people who criticize Windows refuse to get criticized , refuse to see reality. Their beloved os is not so reliable after all.
I fucking need to study and what am I doing this afternoon? Fixing Linux shit of course4 -
It’s 2019.
* Google employee reviews.
* Maybe check out how volatile their stock prices are (if they’re publicly traded).
* Use LinkedIn to find their employees and then stalk them on Facebook and see what kind of content they post.
* If you can’t tell from that, just DM them. Tell them why you’re contacting them and ask for their honest opinion. -
Questions/best practises for git?
For example:
- use present tense in commit messages. (why though?)
A friend of mine also starts his commit messages with either [Task] or [Cleanup]. Useful for finding Commits in Gitlab etc, because only the first line is shown from the message.
Also, one teacher recommended the usage of branches and the other didn't because of alot of potential merge conflicts when working in a Team or a larger Collaboration. What are your thoughts?
Sorry for the messy post, have a hangover4 -
Microsoft is always at it.
Hello, I recently discovered this eye candy of a looking website and how good the CSS looks (Kudos to whoever made this) , and I decided to post a rant of my own. And its about MS Edge and other applications.
So I built my own ATX tower a while back (Loving it) , and I found that it was WONDERFUL to have a computer that was brand new, that didnt have candy crush preinstalled on it when I got it.
Windows 10 users, do this:
Press WIN+I to open the settings menu.
Go to "Apps"
Scroll down the list....
How many applications do you see there that are actually useful , or that you have downloaded?
I never downloaded a Realtek Driver... and I never need it for anything to work. This is the case for 90% of the things you may see in the applications.
Why is HULU installed?
Why is NETFLIX installed?
Why is MINECRAFT BETA INSTALLED? THE BETA HASNT BEEN OUT IN YEARS?
But I digress, this is the case when I work on a computer such as my grandmothers who, bless her soul, isnt very adept at basic file management. Heck , she uses free Norton Antivirus against my recommendation to use the PAID active firewall application on her computer (VIPRE)
So needless to say she needs help. All the time.
So here comes microsoft recently, reinstalling like 15 different programs on her computer , including MS edge. Who else is tired of bloating? I know I am.
I recently found this program on Git!
Its the Sycnex Windows 10 DeBloater
But guess what? DONT USE IT.
Wanna know why?
Because if you do, it works, and if it works, it disables:
- Cortana (basic search engine for your OS, good luck finding candy crush).
- Microsoft Store (That means no XBOX games pass either)
- It breaks part of the file explorer
Wanna know why? BeCaUsE it geTs riD oF Ms EdGe
And believe it or not, apparently MS edges source code is Mandatory for certain functions on your computer. So even If you try to uninstall the browser, it stays behind in some form.
So there you have it. They hard coded it into windows.
Enjoy!
So its not even the author of the GITHUB programs fault, its just a real techincal limitation of the platform.
I hate that stuff man. I really do. There should be 20 things installed on my computer and thats it. Everything else is just, space for games on a solid state. Or Eclipse Photon, etc.
I would post links to show you guys a few things but. Unfortunately I cant post URLs yet!
However, thats my first rant. Hope you liked it.20 -
so my friend and I are canvassing NLEs for our guys at the Post Production squad in our project (we were in charge in infrastructure). We looked at Premiere since it's kinda ok until we found Black Magic Design's Da Vinci Resolve.
First of all, I was suprised with the price. 299 for the Studio Version? Holy fuck, that's cheap as hell! Then there's a free as in free software version which has the core editing features with 1080p rendering. So we grabbed that and kinda suprised it requires postgres but as seeing Resolve having collab and render queues, it makes sense.
Installed them on the PCs the postprods gonna use, they were amazed. We literally saved 500 bucks for an NLE. When they asked how much is it. Our reply was:
"That's free".
and there was silence...
"And it's also 299 bucks for the cooler version".
And silence still ensued.
Guess our guys wasted alot of money on a pipeline that is cheap as hell but more jam-packed than any other NLE found in the market.
Props to you BlackMagic Design. -
I just stumbled across this post about signed-only mails: https://k9mail.github.io/2016/11/... (TL;DR: Signed-only mails are not worth it).
So far, I've been signing all my mails (as not that many people I know use OpenPGP, so I'm far from encrypting everything). I've got a few replies like “I can't open that attachment” and “What is that .asc file?” but I have seen it as doing my part in motivating more people to use encrypted mail with little effort.
I DDW for a bit but couldn't find any other comments on the usefulness of signed-only mail per se. Consequently, I'd like to ask you: How do you use OpenPGP?6 -
"In Python 3, exec is a function; its use has no effect on the compiled bytecode of the function where it is used."
Found in a stackoverflow post.
So wait, you mean to say, you could hide code in a pyc file or am I mistaken?
How is this not a security concern?12 -
$this->newTab->devRant->postRant();

Literally just did this. I went to open Synergy(While typing a different post on dev rant) and instead it opened the wiki link for "Synergy"2 -
Recalling the the time I was discussing a web dev based assignment with a classmate( And I wouldn't even go as far as to call it web dev, it was just making connect 4 using js and node).
Me: so did you get to implementing your game with firebase.
Classmate: no, but hey did you use loops for making the board?
Me: ?? There were like 50 elements ofc what did you do.
( Sigh* to think it's going to this)
Classmate: copy pasted
Yup 50 elements copy and paste. like the person I was talking to wasn't even incompetent I mean he had like a 3.5 gpa, how is there any correlation between this stupid number and how they actually code if you can't even code loops. The dude was a 2nd year student. And this wasn't even the only person I heard this from.
Apparently the TAs had to post about how to use loops in Js before we had our lab exam cause so many people copy pasted instead of loops, to think that would ever have to be the case.
The future is not bright. -
Got recruiter spam from a "devs only" super-hip recruiting company. As they announced in the mail, they develop themselves and know the difference between Java and Javascript. On their blog where the last post is from more than one year ago, they have hints how to pimp up one's resume. Amongst other useful things: don't use Comic Sans.
WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK?!5 -
The JavaScript community should invent the word "outd" to use instead of "outdated" just to make sure they give forewarning about frameworks and tools going out of fashion, because by the time they spell the full word it's already too late and a post-mortem announcement.

Continuation from: https://devrant.com/rants/979267/...
My vision is to implement something that is inspired by Flow Based Programming.
The motivation for this is two fold
* Functional design - many advantages to this, pure functions mean consistent outputs for each input, testable, composable, reasonable. The functional reactive nature means events are handles as functions over time, thus eliminating statefulness
* Visual/Diagrammable - programs can be represented as diagrams, with components, connections and ports, there is a 1 to 1 relationship between the program structure and visual representation. This means high level analysis and design can happen throughout project development.
Just to be clear there are enough frameworks out there so I have no intentions of making a new one, this will make use of the least number of libraries I can get away with.
In my original post I used Highland.js as I've been following the project a while. But unfortunately documentation is lacking and it is a little bare bones; I need something that is a little more featureful to eliminate boilerplate code.
RxJS seems to be the answer, it is much better documentated and provides WAY more functionality. And I have seen many reports of it being significantly easier to use.
Code speaks much louder so stay tuned as I plan to produce a proof of concept (obligatory) todo app. Or if you're sick of those feel free to make a request.3 -

I ended my Medium Subscription today.
Reason:
Non Technical =>
Repetitive posts, often by the same author saying pretty much the same thing.
Multiple copied of the same post being suggested all the time.
Click baity titles which have no real content.
Amazing amount of self promotion rather than any actual value in the article.
Technical=>
Very slow loading of media on the pages, videos don't even load.
Provided solutions in tech based articles often unconventional, super harmful in long term if you have them in your code.
I do agree that they definitely have some good content, but I don't feel it's enough to make me stay given all these issues.
I'd rather just use it on my pc without logging in.5 -
Well for starters the website that gave you assignments on security of web applications shouldn't have an SQL injection vulnerability on the login page.
Next would be the method of teaching, they would skip what not to do and go straight to what you should do. This in turn causes people to use the exec command in php that actually takes a POST parameter.
And stop allowing teachers to be lazy fucks that don't explain shit and only give you assignments.
And finally when telling the teacher that a method he uses would cause another vulnerability the teacher should properly fix this issue not say it is for an "advanced course".
Yes I am pissed -
This is my first "Fuck you Windows" post. I just got a warning from GitHub that blocks me from using it;
"You must update your password to continue using GitHub.com"
Who the fuck are you? I am risking to be hacked. Why do you care, you just warn me and move on. How dare you block me and force me to use better password.19 -
Are there any *performance benefits* in having your users comments on a separate page rather than the actual post/article page?
Example use-case: medium.com5 -
Anyone know of any good reference material that teaches you how to implement and train your own Yolo object localization neural network? (Preferably for tensorflow) I'm not looking for pretrained models that you just downloaded and run, rather a tutorial that walks you step by step through the implementation of the network, the reasoning behind the architecture, and examples of the training data used for the training as well as the process of training?
I know it's a lot to ask but it's really frustrating when ever example is just "clone this repo, hit run and use the pretrained models" sure it might get you up and running quickly but it doesn't really teach you anything...
P.s. - seems like every educational post goes from super simple to super complex without any middle ground and the super complex stuff doesn't tell you why its used the way way it is.5 -
Looking for a lightweight blogging platform to add to my website and I came across this:
https://mashable.com/2014/05/...
SUCK IT WORDPRESS
Ahem sorry, all these Wordpress rants along with my own Wordpress experience has kinda influenced my decision making.
Does anyone have any personal recommendations?
I feel like given the frequency at which I intend to post and the lightweight requirements I have since I’m on a pay-for-what-you-use host it’s probably best just to write posts manually as HTML pages9 -
Hello fellow Devs,
I have developed a small Android library for handling HTTP POST and GET requests. Anyone who is looking for an easy way to perform HTTP calls, can use this library. It supports post requests with JSON and Multipart Form data, file uploading and Get request with URL parameters.
Hope it will help you guys.

First post on devRant... Aaaaand it's university hw... I can't wrap my head around this...
So, the problem is: I have to implement writing and printing 64 bit decimal integers (negative and positive with 2s complement) in NASM Assembly. There are no input parameters, and the result should be in EDX:EAX. The use of 64 bit registers is prohibited.
There is a library which I can use: mio.inc
It has these functions:
- mio_writechar (writes the character which corresponds to the ASCII code stored in AL to console)
- mio_readchar (reads an ASCII character from console to AL)
It also has to manage overflow and backspace. An input can be considered valid or invalid only after the user hits Enter... It's actually a lot of work, and it's just the first exercise out of 10... 😭
The problem is actually just the input - printing should be easy, once I have valid data...
Please help me!3 -
Situation a few months ago: Talking to beginners in a WhatsApp group and helping them with their problems and questions. Thought it would be nice and easy.
After a few weeks, we are "talking" about programming languages used to build a simple website (we were main talking about frontend) so I did my thing, helped them etc.
--- btw. you need to know that the link to the group was available on on a learning platform("sololearn")---
Later in a personal chat with someone:
He:Can you teach me a bit
Me: what do u want to know
He: hmm like what is the exact difference between backend and frontend
Me(in short): [...]languages you mostly use for the frontend thing are for example JavaScript[...]
He:what is JavaScript

Dude. Still have got a painful headache.
Oh btw here are some learning-platforms:

ASP.NET Web Forns?
Can't tell how many times I printed out the page lifecycle diagram for myself or a coworker. So many hours lost trying to figure out which lifecycle hook to use for a specific scenario and then have it all break down because something new was added to the feature. Or figuring when data can be bound, or doing some hack because things break when handling a POST event or some shit.
Overly abstract piece of technological excrement. Might as well express the thing in contemporary dance and check that into source control instead of that ungodly mess.
The switch to AJAX and API calls was such a huge relief it's almost hard to explain in words (I can do a dance tho). And then upgrading to AngularJS, man, worlds apart...
I don't care how much they pay me (okay, you got me...), I'm never touching Web Forms again. -
/rambling
Arghhh!
Okay, so have just been having a play with Mailgun's webhook functionality (a client finally has a decent use for these).
I setup a test endpoint that sends a mail via Mailgun and then handles the POST data too. It emails myself the raw POST request response from Mailgun when I open the email. Mailgun fire an event their end when they detect the message has been opened.
All is good apart from Mailgun are posting multiple requests for each event, which is annoying.
After an hour messing around and getting annoyed I have a complete face palm moment.
In my test script Mailgun is called is send my notification email! So I'm creating multiple events for the same test message.
i.e. send original message, receive post back from Mailgun to my endpoint, my script then emails me the result using Mailgun. The latter itself generates its own events again.
Sooooo stupid of me to not notice something so obvious :(1 -
Why open-source matters: I can remove annoyances like starting in front-facing mode from a smartphone camera software, and hide the button for the "effects" drawer that I never use since I can add Sepia or black/white in post processing should I ever need it.
Both of these annoyances cause missing moments. If the source code of the camera software is open, and if the operating system is rooted, these utter annoyances can be removed.
There are open-source third party applications like "Open Camera", but they lack quick launch support and might have, presumably due to lack of optimization, a two-second shutter lag. Big no. -

I know that DI(dependency injection) is probably just another good pattern out there like many others, but dear lord have I been burned on it with acumatica. Acumatica just loves having friggen magic crap everywhere with no damn explanation(*may be in a blog post somewhere but that’s no replacement for good documentation).
I believe they use AutoFac in C# on an asp.net server. They love to utilize reflection and injection and in turn the server takes multiple minutes to startup whilst it dynamically registers everything, as well on any individual pages.
Development is a pain in the ass on this damn system.
I’m constantly having to dive into the damn code using dotpeek to understand what the fuck they are doing and it’s often friggen stupid shit. They like to reinvent the wheel a fair bit.1 -
Greetings to my fellow developers and also my friends which I consider you all to be to me!, so very recently I stumbled upon someone by the name of ‘George Hotz’ I really think thats his last name but anyways to continue!.
I watched many of his coding streams (he seems to use python all the time) so friends, He seems to be pre good at what he does, and it really inspired/motivated me to learning python, and I really hope not for the wrong reasons 🤓😅, so how do i go around to getting onto that level of being a python dev? Just some back story I started with c# then went to c++,
Personally I’m finding it quite the struggle to understand python😅, I’m currently trying to learn by using a book called head first in Python, i personally love how the book is made through many pictures and less wording :D , and also i use IDLE which looks to be a learning given by python 🤓
So everyone, I’d once again like to say thank you for reading my very long message or post, I appreciate your time to read it also! I know i seem to ramble on alot but my bad 😅, i hope you have a wonderful day/night wherever you may be ❤️

Hi, first post here, I'm wondering, does anyone actually use uml diagrams? I completed a course in first year, apparently "system analysis and design" means draw uml diagrams all class, then draw more later, without ever actually touching a text editor.3

Having an argument about "empty" function in php.
someone told me that we shouldn't use this function because this is deprecated and doesn't work on php 5.3.
He has this opinion because once we took a site live and there few conditions broke. And they were like this " if ( empty($this->input->post())"
While I was trying to tell basically it wasn't empty fault I used it wrong, because the docs says nor its deprecated neither it'll break if we just use variables in it and not functions.
Argument ends up in "not getting any reply" :/ -
Use less dev rant. Yes I know it's ironic to post this here, but I waste way too much time on browsing through posts every day :/

PM, we are going to go to an agile methodology for working. (despite PM having never done agile, and most of the team having never done agile) But we will have 4 week sprints, as 2 week sprints are too short. We are going to have daily stand ups, oh but we'll only have then once a week... And we will keep the 3 hour mid week meeting. Oh and we'll keep our existing JIRA, but you also need to use *new* JIRA as well, but that's going to the customer so don't post bugs on it.... (all with a ln important delivery in a few months) The suggestion of getting an adviser (either internal or external) who has experience with agile to help us transition smoothly and provide best practice got shot down. feels like the blind leading the blind...2

I fucking cannot stand CMake. I hate this stupid fucking piece of software. I've been trying for 3 fucking days to get SDL2 to link just once and I cannot. It doesn't work in the slightest.
Every time I look for help I find a Stack Overflow post from 5 years ago about someone having the exact same problem and all of the responses are "This function is deprecated, use this instead"
THAT DOESNT SOLVE MY FUCKING ISSUE
WHY DOES CMAKE DEPRECATE THINGS EVERY 1.5 YEARS
THIS ACTUALLY MAKES ME WANT TO SWITCH TO INTERPRETED LANGUAGES I CANNOT STAND BUILD SYSTEMS
SURELY IT CANT BE THAT HARD

I am currently in the hunt for a job post college. However with the 300+ jobs I have applied to, I think I have also got that many phone calls from spammers. However, some of them are getting good. They use a CallerID (that isn't even the name or company they are) most of the calls are from stupid insurance companies. So I have started to play with them by pretending to be different food companies (PizzaHut, Papa Johns, ect.). I think this is more fun. What have your experiences been lately?2

First post woo
So I need some opinions guys...
Just started a new job and they are trying to force me to use eclipse rather than IntelliJ (which I have used for a good while )
I have asked for their reasoning and they simply say it's so everyone is using the same thing in the team , I think this is a pretty crap reason , especially when all the projects are created in maven , what do you all think ? Am I being unreasonable ? P.S I pay for the license myself4 -

Today I discovered that Betheme for Wordpress stores data base64 encoded in the database. Meaning you can't just do a search replace when you migrate a site to a different domain. That combined with Chrome based browsers not loading mixed security assets, but Firefox (the browser I use) does, makes for a confusing trouble ticket.
You have to change the setting to serialize sanely, then go into every post and save to update the stored data. Fortunately, the site is new so I only had one page to update, but I can't imagine the headache an established site would be to migrate.3 -
I feel like such an idiot every time I use windows just slightly beyond clicking buttons. I'm trying to write a very simple macro to simply send an email out when I receive an email with a particular header. and no, outlook doesnt support that with rules. so now I have to use this garbage IDE, writing a script in a 25 year old language, with every bell and whistle button you could possibly think of and no way of figuring out how to do anything without being balls deep in a decade old forum post. I hate microsoft more and more every time I use it. I thought maybe if I got good and started "dev"ing with it more, I'd hate it less, but no... its always some super clunky application with shit tons of buttons and you dont know what they do, and when the app breaks, it gives you some hex number and nothing else, and sends all the good stuff to microsoft so they can fix it in the next "big update" thatll fuck up youre entire days worth of work and kill an hour of your precious time. Ugh.1

Me post a lot of investigation in a slack thread and come to a conclusion
20 mins later engineers in thread post things like they didn't read anything I wrote and come to same conclusion, but involve other parties AGAIN making us all look dumb
Why do they just ignore what I wrote, literally linked the same splunk dashboards and same error numbers that I did. I don't get it.
Why should I care? I hoped I could use this as a way to convince manager once again that I do the things he asks me to, but it seems it's all useless.

MongoDB database with really relational data. One main collection that had refs to four other collections, all of those references necessary to populate data for a page view. Complicated aggregate to populate all the necessary data and then filter based on criteria selected by the user. And then the client decides that he wants the information to be sortable by column. Some of those columns are fields on the main model, no problem. Others are fields on the refs, which is more of a problem. Especially given that these refs aren’t one single object. They’re arrays of objects.
The revelation was that I could just write an aggregate function to flat map the main collection, returning only the fields necessary for the search, and output it to a new collection and instead use that new collection for displaying and filtering/sorting search results.
But you can’t run the aggregate all the time, you surely say. If anything changes in the main collection, it won’t be reflected in the search results!

How about a rant about devrant?
Where the heck can you find info about how stuff works within a rant?
How do I embed a picture or a link properly?
How do I use the smileys?
Actually, the post-window itself should empower the user to do these things, but all you get is the attach image thingy.
I presume this all works out of the box when ranting with your mobile phone or something, but using the port rant thing on the site, I have no clue.
So, can someone please link me to the OBVIOUS location where this info can be found and that I missed? Thanks.22 -
Does anyone blog or post on dev topics / tutorials, and if so what platform do you use these days?
- Medium is just full of aggressive paywall crap these days - not interested.
- Freecodecamp is more geared towards tutorials, though I wouldn't be against this - but seems like it's mainly geared towards "getting started" tutorials, and there's no way to comment on articles either.

had this professor for Formal Methods and Logic who would show up clueless as fuck didn't use the internet to communicate any information. Didn't post notes or anything. Didn't have our quizzes pre-printed and showed up late to a class because he went into the GIANT by campus and was "lost like a monkey staring at shiny objects" (-his words not mine) Also guy didn't know how to teach and said everything was trivial when you would ask questions. He was an asshole and unfortunately tenured.

Given the number of people on here who say "I'm learning" or "I want to learn", I saw this and thought I'd post it. Sorry if a repost or advertising or otherwise not really acceptable, but might be of use to someone.

Working on my new WebSite/Shop while discovering an Error....
I got a "Download" button as <input> that triggers an JS-Script that makes a POST-Request to a target=_blank, that downloads the file via a header (so that people won't know where the content is located, but I blocked the source with .htaccess, too)
So the error: While testing in Mozilla everything worked fine, but as soon as I switched to Chrome THAT FUCKING STUPID DOWNLOAD PAGE WON'T FUCKING OPEN! I HAD TO CHANGE IT FROM AN INPUT TO AN DIV AND TO FIGURE THIS SHIT OUT IT COSTED ME FUCKING 1 HOUR! FUCK YOU CHROME! FUCK YOU! YES YOU FUCK YOU! YOU RUIN EVERYTHING! MOZILLA IS FASTER WHY THE FUCK DO I STILL USE YOU BESIDES OF PORN! OH WAIT I DON'T EVEN WATCH PORN BETTER UNINSTALL YOU NOW! FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU6 -
I’m gonna make an iOS app, here’s the idea.
Everyday user gets some credit. User can use credit to make a post. One credit means one view. The post will be viewed by random people, and after certain views, the post gets destroyed. Users can only view random posts, they have like a little button that whenever you press it, you get a random post
If another user saw the post and thinks it’s interesting, he can sponsor this post with his own credit. Users can make comments however everything will be anonymous. If one user finds another user’s reply or post interesting, he can request to add the user so they can see each others name on posts in the future.
Regardless how much credit a post gets, when it ran out, the post gets deleted.
Before you say anything like oh shit now people have to pay to make posts? Im not gonna make this a pay to win system, so people don’t just gets more credit by paying.
Let me know what you think7 -
I can't stop laughing at the irony of this post : https://freenode.net/news/...
in fact, all posts from rasengan on the freenode "news" site are laughable. If you want a good weekend laugh, you should subscribe to the site.
I rarely read freenode's news because it was mostly only technical update posts that wasn't too relevant to me. But now, this person is using an IRC network's news site as their personal ranting space and probably want to pass them off as "news".
oh, and apparently, they have too many designations that they need to use a new one with every new post.12 -
I ask what i think is an interesting question i havent been able to answer on software engineering stack exchange ("why did the original Basic use the caret for exponentiation"). Even said "no subjective answers, please provide a source" in my post.
Result: a bunch of comments saying it "because it looks like an up arrow", comments saying I'm rude because i said no subjective answers, and a bunch of downvotes.
Did eventually get a good answer though. The system works.2 -
Service worker.
I've been given the task to write a website for our school, where teachers would post plans, images, polls... I decided to use this new technology called service worker. Been struggling a lot with just, but hey it looks like an app and works offline.
It's really something anyone can add to any website in a week, but the advantages are quite a lot2 -

I was going to comment until I realized it was a post from 300 days ago.
Just want to say ask you how it went or give a post mortem. Also Congratulations. I hope you brought a long run way when you started almost a year ago.
Remember starting is 80% of finishing, and carrying through is the other 20%.
Success looks easy when all you see are the success stories. Steve jobs wasn't the most famous marketer, he was the most famous salesman, and what he sold was a dream.
Marketing is a buzzword, and a lot of companies try to use marketing as a replacement for sales people, but nothing really beats a good sales person or team. Thats the secret to marketing: forgo it as much as possible and work on sales and relationships instead. Awareness is nice, but money and sales are better.
This coming from a guy who had six businesses by the time he was twenty six and helped his family to start two other successful businesses.
Apparently I'm good at helping other people make money just not good at helping myself do it.
What I've learned is if you can get 1 customer you can get 10 and if you can get 10 you can get 100. And then keep going.
Good luck.3 -

*Long post*
Fuck Firebase.
I am working on a Instagram clone. So far it was going good until I came to the follow/unfollow part. Specifically where users post will only be visible to the friends who are following him/her.
Initially I thought I could use Firebase rules for that. Turns out you can not use the rules for filtering because of cascading properties of firebase rules.
Second one was the traditional approach in which you can check the author of the post and if the author is in my friend list then display it. But this seems idiotic approach because in the long run users will have to download thousands of posts just to check them. I know I can use the order by but this is also a cumbersome approach nonetheless.
Does anybody has any idea on how to do it. I'm stuck here.4 -
commodore amiga 500, when I was 5 or 6.
what was the very first thing on it that i experienced, i don't know, but some things i remember:
Cannon Fodder 2
A-Train, a game that i played for months, it utterly fascinated me and i was utterly unable to keep my company afloat, because i was utterly unable to understand how the mechanics of the materials moving around worked (i still don't, actually, but in a different way)
some Apache simulator, which took us (me and father) literally a week to figure out how to get into the actual game from the main menu stylised as a military office. it took us several days to even realize it's the menu.
the Lotus Esprit 2 game, which we played regularly.
some Airbus simulator where i took two weeks of trial and error to figure out how to take off, without manual.
some experiments with midi sequencing and notation music programs.
how every two months, dad came with a 20page long list of programs and games from some pirate seller, which we would go through, mark stuff that sounded interesting (going by name only), then he would send it by post to him, and after a week, we would go take a package from post office full of floppies, literally like 200, and the next two or three weeks, we would be trying all of it out, seeing what the things we got were about, putting the good ones on one pile, the boring ones on another (cheap floppies for use)...
ah the magical times of wonder and exploration...2 -
Fuck those who hate on Mac os and say that they aren't customizable and cost money for everything. Like some days ago I saw this post about how Mac users need money for like getting simple shit done. Tbh most of the ppl haven't even used Mac for dev stuff. And after using Linux I would say MAC IS AS GOOD AS LINUX. (if u use Mac ports or brew as a package manager) and u can even run Linux apps in there without almost any hassle.9

I don't live in a vacuum. I need to open an occasional Adobe bs format file (Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop). An occasional MS Office file too (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). And don't tell me LibreOffice supports .docx. It doesn't support edits suggestion mode well enough. I needed AutoCAD for a period of time.
Desktop Linux people, what do you want me to do? Go to devRant and post “windows bad” rant? Go cry on Reddit?
I too think Windows is evil and 11 is essentially malware, but when I suddenly need those things done yesterday, and my livelihood depends on that, I have no choice.

Ok so, another post got me thinking…
Every browser I’ve tried sucks one way or another. Chrome, Firefox, Vivaldi etc…
Safari on my work Mac is so far the least annoying one, although it seems to have an issue with Google’s services…
On my personal computer (Linux) I use mainly Vivaldi, tho I have Firefox installed as well since apparently Vivaldi doesn’t quite support everything on the interwebs…
So, fellow ranters, what are your favoured browsers (all platforms go!) and most importantly, why?11 -
hi all
my friends and I are creating a game! I've had prior experience making games before, and my friend who does all of the modelling has some experience with Unity Snaps which we can use to make some buildings, but we've never really tried to make a team project before, until now!
we're making a top down urban warfare game and we're making quite good progress so far! we are done with configuring a server to host, player movement, and almost player shooting
I would post a link to the discord server but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to advertise and could not find the TOS. anyway yeah please tell me if I can post it3 -
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but couldn' find the proper reddit about to get this combo so, I want to know if this runs Ubuntu Xenial and what kind of power supply do I need.

Im always trying to learn new things. Im passionate about learning new things, especially development. So much i started a small collaboration group of developers and slack group to collaborate new projects/ideas,get to know new people, and just to learn new things from each other. The group is not language specific developers only, but mostly consists of PHP/Laravel developers at the moment, so im always trying to grow that network as much as possible, so if you would like to join my network to collaborate new ideas or to just even talk to some cool cats, ill send you an invite any day. Anyways, back to my original reason for this post. Im mid level developer who considers himself pretty knowledgeable in PHP and Laravel. Im curious to what other developers use to learn new things. Im constantly questioning my skillset and compare myself to senior developers who always blow me away with their knowledge which often makes me feel like i dont know enough. Currently I use resources such as:
-laracasts.com
-serversforhackers.com
-digital ocean articles or any textbook that wont cost me an arm and a leg lol
I mean i just want to learn about tech related stuff always but currently interested in learning specifically about development topics such as:
- Server administration because i would consider this my weakest skill set (things like provisioning,nginx/security, deployment)
- Continous Integration (as ive never been at a job that practices it)
- RESTful APIs(as ive never developed one)
and so much more but i wont waste your time with my never ending list. What resources/tools do you guys use for your learning?6 -
I read this rant about IE (https://www.devrant.io/rants/514347) but could not relate to it (I use Linux MS suckers!) So I thought I'd post a browser rant of my own, and this time it is about Chrome (or Blink since it also affects Opera). Whenever I start typing localhost Chrome suggests "localhost" but when I click this suggestion it takes me to a Google search result when all I really wanted was to test a webapp on my dev box. This is very annoying every time.

How do I get it to execute blocks of code depending on the type of value it receives in a variable?

I always thought J2EE was like a completely different thing from general Java. It has features like Enterprise management beans, special packages and has it's on Project type, structure in IDEs.
But it seems like it's not actually that different? If you use Spring, Hibernate, custom library annotations and build a Servlet, web server with @POST, @GET or use Serialization... And maybe use JDK instead of JRE, Maven, Ant... apparently that's considered J2EE?9 -
Another Mojave Post...
Apple added 4 new apps, all of which cannot be removed (oh boy am I off to a great start). I saw the new home app and thought "if your stuck here I might as well attempt to put you to some use" so I opened it to try and maybe add my smart plug or something, but it told me I need an iOS device to add accessories...
Why the fuck is there any functionality that is locked behind iOS especially something as integral to the core functionality of the app like adding a fucking device to an app that manages them.
On a side note apparently news is bugged for me and I cannot find it it the launchpad so that's slightly less bloat.2 -

Folks should give Clojure a look. It may be Lisp on steroids. Need to wrap your brain around macros to use it properly. It's interpreted so it must be slow, riiight?
Not so, er, fast.Ran across a discussion re C++ vs Clojure running data acquisition at 100 MBPS or better. Bottom line, original Clojure code was sped up 76.6x and blew the doors off the C++ code.
Be warned, a number of optimization steps were required. The end result blew me away. Had a link I wanted to insert but it's not on my phone and I may have re-installed Linux wiping it out. Have looked for the post for hours, no joy.

I don't know why I can't understand how to use thymeleaf. It's concept makes sense, split an html page into two so you have a header html page made up of code you don't want to change, and an index html page of content you do want to edit. But no matter what it won't fucking connect the classes.

If anyone has experience with this you can take a look at my post here on it, maybe give some input. For now though I'm going to just run a single html file and make comments in my index page. :/5 -

I only learn and work with aws. Never tried gcp or azure
Someone explain me the difference between all 3 in your own words
1) A quick summary in 1-2 sentences each
2) Pros and cons
3) Which one is the best in your opinion
4) which one would you recommend for all projects
5) would you recommend to use 1 for all projects or does it depend on a project, if it depends how do you determine which one should be used for which project
6) some people post on linkedin about azure cosmos db glorifying it of how superior db it is. Never tried it. Whats so special about Azure CosmosDB since this is only for Azure i think2 -

So I’ve been wanting to build my own web apps for a while now, but I can’t seem to find any info on the legal stuff that goes into that. I know at minimum I’ll need a privacy policy.
Like do I need a lawyer to get everything set up? I’m not talking about creating a startup. Just web apps that people can use, e.g. a casual budget app or content aggregator. Just looking for a side hustle for a little extra cash and some experience.
What about compliance with the tech I use? If I setup a freemium app, am I out of compliance with open source tech I’m using? Anyway sorry for the long post 😅3 -

Some background:
About 2 months ago, my company wanted to build a micro service that will be used to integrate 3 of our products with external ticketing systems.
So, I was asked to take on this task. Design the service, ensure extendability and universality between our products (all have very different use cases, data models and their own sets of services).
Two weeks of meetings with multiple stakeholders and tech leads. Got the okay by 4-6 people. Built the thing with one other guy in a manner of a week. Stress tested it against one ticketing service that is used in a product my team is developing.
Everyone is happy.
Fast forward to last Thursday night.
“Email from human X”: hey, I extended the shared micro service for ticketing to add support for one of clients ghetto ticketing systems. Review my PR please. P.S. release date is Monday and I am on a personal day on Friday.
I’m thinking. Cool I know this guy. He helped me design this API. He must’ve done good. . . *looks at code* . . . work..... it’s due... Monday? Huh? Personal day? Huh?
So not to shit on the day. He did add much needed support for bear tokens and generalized some of the environment variables. Cleaned up some code. But.... big no no no...
The original code was written with a factory pattern in mind. The solution is supposed to handle communication to multiple 3rd parties, but using the same interfaces.
What did this guy do wrong? Well other than the fact that he basically put me in a spot where if I reject his code, it will look like I’m blocking progress on his code...
His “implementation” is literally copy-paste the entire class. Add 3 be urls to his specific implementation of the API.
Now we have
POST /ticket
PUT /ticket
POST /ticket-scripted
PUT /ticket-scripted
POST /callback
The latter 3 are his additions... only the last one should have been added in reality... why not just add a type to the payload of the post/put? Is he expecting us to write new endpoints for every damn integration? At this rate we might as well not have this component...
But seriously this cheeses me... especially since Monday is my day off! So not only do I have to reject this code. I also have to have a call now with him on my fucking day off!!!!
Arghhhhhh1 -

I'm a lefty and even I use my phone mostly with right thumb. Also it's very easy to report a comment without noticing (happened to me twice. Reported a perfectly legit and appropriate comment because of awkward report action placement.
IMHO opinion the report action should be placed anywhere else in the post but where it is now.1 -

When learning programming languages what kind of projects/information sources do you all find most helpful?
I'm working on learning more about C++ currently for use with Unreal but other than books I pick up here and there not sure what else to try my hand at to help expand and strengthen my knowledge. This can be applied to any language that's just my current focus.
I know typically most people seem to have a decent grasp on what they're working on in here but I consider myself a novice.
Sorry my first post was a question. Been a lurkers on and off for a bit.2 -

Oh, now I understand why my past self had some pain in the neck in front of his computer. Twas his future self (the latest version of me writing this post) strangling him for the terabyte of duplicates of so many shit spread around my external storages.

So I was building opencv some time back.
Nice enough package, like most python linked packages I'm finding though I know you can use it via c and its meant to be but why would you want to ? .. it contains a whole bunch of half finished crap that is actually useful in part including the capacity to tear apart video files and manipulate frames one at a time and then rewrite them back to a file. about the only lib that's easy to use that I saw that does that. hell I can even compose my own video frames. also the only other lib I saw that does that thus far.
so...
I post a bug, because of FUCKING CMAKE NOT WORKING. not conforming with the well thought out build environment that most GNU style c packages use.
you know like when you need an upstream source package to build the code, or a downgraded package to build the code and don't want to fuck up your host environment so you have to specify a bunch of lib paths and the like so that ld and gcc work correctly etc etc etc from your custom build location and so you can later use these same values to find the compiled lib and build software against it.
fucker closes my ticket saying i hijacked the c environment................
no.
its because cmake sucks.
they're using and i don't know why a module specifically written to find libtiff.
specifically written but doesn't find the only source on my system that provides tiff which my env variables point directly to !!!!
lazy fucking cocksuckers !
I want to code a solution this issue.
something that translates ac files and am files and cmakelists into something intelligent and easy to follow that doesn't sacrifice the flexibility of make and gnu shit and unfucks cmake based projects !7 -
Was working as the only frontend developer ona project having 4 "senior" developers. They use Laravel to make an API feeding the angular app.
Why the documentation sucked?
Half the API call params where missing, and not one time did I come across an example stating that the API expects a boolean only to find out 20 minutes later that they mean int 1 or 0 not true or false. Best part however was sending arrays in POST by sending the elements as comma separated values (e1,e2,e3...). Oh and not documentation but while at it a rant... There are other response codes except 200 for fucks sake -
Alright, I found the root of the issue from my last project post.
It’s the damn MEM indicator.
In my project, I want to be able to load presets from an SD card in order to let the user switch from preset values to values determined and calculated from a potentiometer.
So it’s pretty hard to discern when you’re using the memory and when you aren’t without some kind of indication.
Every fucking time I try to put on that indicator (a red “MEM” at the bottom of the screen) it completely fucks the entire display.
I HAVE NO IDEA WHY!!!
Might be possible that there is a VRAM space issue... idk.
Will probably use a LED for indication instead. -
My stickers arrived. They are awesome. Many thanks!
Since i have a shitty phone and don't use twitter anyway, i'm not gonna post photos. -
They asked me to build a small website they will embed in a native application with some web wrapper in Android and iOS.
But also asked me to build a login web service that will return a JWT. Done.
They want to do a native code login form that opens up the web wrapper with my small website already logged in using the login web service.
I have no idea how to proceed in the backend.
At first i tried using postman with a POST request to the sessions/sign_in route and sending a form with the authenticity token and the email and password; but CSRF stopped me. I don't want to turn it off because of reasons.
Now i am wondering how to use this JWT to generate a cookie with a session inside it that they can use in the web wrapper.
Any help would be appreciated :)4 -
I have a couple of "at risk" teens (I won't say what) who need an extra level of Internet filtering and restriction for their own protection against their use of really bad judgment. I've already enabled the OpenDNS parental control URL/content filters on my Netgear R8000 router but one of the teens has figured out how to install a VPN on mobile. I want to enable the router's OpenVPN feature for better overall security for all of us. But is there a way to block the use of an "unauthorized" VPN, like on a mobile device, without also effectively blocking my router's OpenVPN as well? I was looking at this post (https://community.netgear.com/t5/...) but wondered if anyone here has experience with this.6
