This guy at my last internship. A windows fanboy to the fucking max!
He was saying how he'd never use anything related to Linus Torvalds because he hated him for creating Linux.
Two seconds later I saw him initializing a new git repo.
I was standing there like:
*should I tell him?*
😅😆65 -
Dev: why should I develop windows phone apps. Almost nobody uses this kind of shit.
Customer: Why should I use a fucking windows phone. The windows app store is as empty as a ghost town.31 -
Manager: Hey, this is Junior. he will work with you from now on.
Me: Oh cool, we could use some help.
(moments later...)
Junior: Hey i got this error. Im new with this engine. sorry.
Me: It cool, then you should read the documentation first. its all there. including your error.
Junior: whats documentation?
Me: ...

A friend of mine: Look at this nice app I made 😎
*shows me a normal looking app with tabs and different views"
Me: Hmmm… looks good.
Friend: Do you know how I made the navigation between views? 😏
Me: I'm afraid to ask…
Friend: Since I didn't know how to use the piece of code I found on internet, I made multiple views one above another with visibility set to false, and during the navigation I just change the visibility. 😁
Me: WTF? Man… this isn't something you should be proud of… it shouldn't be done.
Friend: Do you also want to know how I backup the code?
Me: No…
Friend: I send it to myself via email.
Me: FUCK!
Friend: I also never use while loops, I prefer to use for instead with a break inside. 😊

A convo with my !dev colleague.
Her: Can i use your PC for a while?
Me: Yeah sure.
Her: Why is this so wierd? Why i can't refresh?
Me: It's Ubuntu.
Her: Man, this sucks, you should use windows 10, it's the latest!
End of Convo.
After that day, i heard her talking to my other colleague.
Her: "Go ask him. The one with the weird PC."

Alright, since Facebook released a VPN service a little while ago but they're actively advertising it as a secure and privacy friendly service, I felt like - although I'm very busy right now - I should do a security/privacy blog post about this.
If you even slightly care about your own privacy or the privacy of anyone you're communicating with, for the love of God, don't use this service.
Hereby a blog post explaining stuffs: https://much-security.nl//...44 -
Ranted about him before but this just came to my mind again.
The fucking windows (to the max) fanboy I had to deal with for too long.
Every time I mentioned something about what programming language to use in a project he was NOT part of:
"I know it's none of my business, BUT I think you should use .net"
(All backend JavaScript and php guys).
Every time I mentioned something about what server system to use:
"I know it's none of my business but I think you should use Windows server"
(All Linux guys)
Every time I'd say something positive about Linux he'd search as long as needed to prove that that was also a windows thing (didn't even come close sometimes)
Every time I told the devs there about a windows security issue (as in "guys they found this thing, install the next update to stay safe :)" - "ahhh will do, thanks for letting know man!") he'd search as long as needed to prove that Linux also had had security issues like that.
(Okay?!? I know?!? I'm just trying to notify people so their systems stay secure and they're genuinely happy with that so STFU)
MOTHERFUCKER.17 -
This should probably be labeled a meme, but I'm going to actually rant about this meme.
People use the term hacker way too frequently. Solving your trashy fucking "Pa$$w0rd123" password and getting access to your Spotify account isn't hacking.
Same douchewaffle probably thinks you could hack a Facebook account in 30 seconds. I fucking hate the way movies have portrayed hacking and created a dramatized bullshit idea for people to believe is real.21 -
A customer did send a 3GB+ .txt file to the database guy in my office. He (senior dev) starts ranting about how he should handle this since his tools failed to do whatever he had to with this data.
After seeing him struggle some time I did a short search (I'm apprentice since 4 months) and then told him to use "split -l".9 -
The past 2 years where I work:
Me: hey let's use git instead of ftp!
Boss: should we?
Some time later: he is loving it...
Me: hey let's use trello instead of excell!!??!
Boss: huumm.. Dunno... Should we?
After much convincing: whole departments are using and loving it....
Me: hey let's move from rackspace to DO!
Boss: huumm... Convince me...
Year latter: everything smooth and muuuch lower prices... Managing 6 servers instead of one...
Me: UNIT TESTS!!!
Boss: nah, this but a waste of time...
For real? Get a grip man, I only encourage solutions tested ( no pun intended, or is it ) by me for a long time...4 -
Saw my uncle using Microsoft Edge today.
Me: Uncle, you should use Chrome or Firefox. They are better.
Uncle: Windows 10 showed a pop up few days back that chrome drains battery faster. So I uninstalled chrome.
Me: But Windows is fooling you to use its product. Edge is horrible and useless.
Uncle: So you think you are smarter than Windows people? Are they idiots who designed this whole software?
Microsoft u got 1 more Edge user. Enjoy, you lying and misleading company.28 -
FML. An overreaching supergenius "architect" and a database team:
A: "We have decided that apps should use mysql. Install a MySQL so we match cloud"
DBA: "we don't have an image or experience with MySQL. We have mssql and Oracle "
A: "ok, use mssql in data center and mysql in production cloud"
DBA: "that's... not going to work well"
A: "just do it!"
...
Me, reading this shit, sends email: "ignoring the fact that we have more than 500 queries in this application which will need to be checked and most likely rewritten, how are we supposed to test the mysql queries without production access?"
A: "just use mssql local and MySQL in cloud"
M: "... Just to make sure I understand, you want us to write queries for mssql, test them locally, and then write separate queries, with a separate SQL connection abstraction that deploys to production? Again, how are we going to test this?"
A: "no, use same queries, should be fine"
M: "they really won't, they're different dialects"
A: "do the needful, make work!"
If karma were a thing, this person would have long since exploded into a cloud of atomized blood.18 -
I'm so fucking done with all those "woke" YouTube programming tutorials like: "Why you should NEVER use else statements", "Why functions should ALWAYS return a value", "Why switch statements are actually EVIL" and stuff like this

Example #1 of ??? Explaining why I dislike my coworkers.
[Legend]
VP: VP of Engineering; my boss’s boss. Founded the company, picked the CEO, etc.
LD: Lead dev; literally wrote the first line of code at the company, and has been here ever since.
CISO: Chief Information Security Officer — my boss when I’m doing security work.
Three weeks ago (private zoom call):
> VP to me: I want you to know that anything you say, while wearing your security hat, goes. You can even override me. If you need to hold a release for whatever reason, you have that power. If I happen to disagree with a security issue you bring up, that’s okay. You are in charge of release security. I won’t be mad or hold it against you. I just want you to do your job well.
Last week (engineering-wide meeting):
> CISO: From now on we should only use external IDs in urls to prevent a malicious actor from scraping data or automating attacks.
> LD: That’s great, and we should only use normal IDs in logging so they differ. Sounds more secure, right?
> CISO: Absolutely. That way they’re orthogonal.
> VP: Good idea, I think we should do this going forward.
Last weekend (in the security channel):
> LD: We should ONLY use external IDs in urls, and ONLY normal IDs in logging — in other words, orthogonal.
> VP: I agree. It’s better in every way.
Today (in the same security channel):
> Me: I found an instance of using a plain ID in a url that cancels a payment. A malicious user with or who gained access to <user_role> could very easily abuse this to cause substantial damage. Please change this instance and others to using external IDs.
> LD: Whoa, that goes way beyond <user_role>
> VP: You can’t make that decision, that’s engineering-wide!
Not only is this sane security practice, you literally. just. agreed. with this on three separate occasions in the past week, and your own head of security also posed this before I brought it up! And need I remind you that it is still standard security practice!?
But nooo, I’m overstepping my boundaries by doing my job.
Fucking hell I hate dealing with these people.14 -
Caller: My client looking for experienced developer in Technology X,Y and Z are you open for new position?
Me: But I don't know this X and Y, I only use Z!
Caller: Please add them to your CV and send it to me so I can pass it to the client...
Me: But I don't know it!
Caller: Neither me nor the client know it also, please update the CV...
Me: How many years of experience should I add then?
Caller: 3 years will be OK!

Good news: Learning to use Vim was tough as fuck but worth it. I've been on it for a week and not having to use a mouse for text editing anymore just naturally makes more sense.
Bad news: Nothing. Else. Has. Vim. I am going to be spending hours figruing out how to get this to work in MS Office online and Firefox to keep my workflow the same.
P.S. devRant should have a Vim option. Make it a perk for supporters. :)22 -

Went to see Jason Bourne last night. No spoilers, but I'm guessing this is how the writers came up with the story:
Writer 1: Let's make it super techie
W2: Yeah, that way it's about current issues, like Internet privacy.
W1: Should we hire a tech consultant so we get things right?
W2: Nah, I saw the Matrix once, I understand computers.
Actual line from film:
"Use SQL to corrupt their database"

I love devRant. But the people constantly saying "Python is shit" OR "Windows is for idiots" OR "Never use C it's ancient" OR "Microsoft sucks" OR any other fucking subjective opinion that's absolutely worthless drive me crazy.
I see many people here asking "Should I do [option1] or [option2]?" And the only responses are "[option3 which is not a fucking option you degraded fuck who thinks his/her opinions somehow matter in this discussion while they are clearly NOT helping]"
Sorry but this place has "Rant" in it's name so I thought this would be appropriate.22 -
These clowns make my blood boil.

I love when job postings are like, you will use THIS tool, and THIS is how it will be accomplished!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
bitch, i'm the senior engineer, I should be the one picking and choosing tools to match your needs, not you and HR pals!
no wonder your job offer still isnt' filled!
i'd love to ask these organizations why they chose such boomer technologies in the first place and why there is no effort to change to much more developer / user friendly tools.... just a red flag from the start11 -
Once I got zero in an exam just because I chose to make a function for a piece of code I had to use repeatedly. I went to my lab teacher and asked her what was wrong about my code to which she replied "This code is wrong because there should not be this function in this class". She was our lab instructor and turned out she marked us by matching our code with code given to her by our lecturer. I quietly returned to my seat and started thinking about how did she get this job.8

I had a few interesting ones for my current job. Most of you should of hear it by now, but still a decent brainteasers.
You have 9 pool balls, 1 of which is slightly heavier than the other. You have a balance scale, find the heavier ball. You can only use the scale twice.
Devs, let's not spoil this by actually posting the answer.16 -
With regards to what @trogus writes here: https://www.devrant.io/rants/520228
I have now purchased double monitors for $8.99. Until @trogus and @dfox figures out how to monetize this wonderful place, may I suggest that everyone buys something for their avatar? The margin on those should be close to 100%.
On the subject of how much I would pay for using devRant, on one hand I use it more than Spotify which would mean I should happily pay $10/month, on the other hand I shouldn't be using devRant so much since my time is limited and devRant isn't exactly a productivity tool.
I'd personally be OK with every 10th or 20th rant being an ad though for instance. As long as they don't appear in comments.
I hope we all find a way to sustain this great place.13 -
I built a feature. I asked questions for days. Nobody helped. I built it anyway, and while I'm not sure it's quite right, it works.
During a code review, I asked for clarification on who the fuck it's for. Simple fucking question. Didn't get an answer. I did get the same crap response twice, though. It's great because it both doesn't answer my question and makes things worse.
Let's refer to this as "branding." Here we go!
------
Root: "Should this be changed to blue? I'm not sure who the end-user is."
TC: "should be purple, then call it something more convenient" (...what?)
Root: "Better phrasing: if we use the feature, it should match our colors and be blue. If customers use it, it should match their colors and be red. It shouldn't be both. I looked through everything again, and i'm convinced that it's only for us, so it should be blue so it matches everything."
TC: "this should be purple, and then call it something [sic] red" (...what!? also: lolcopypaste)
------
But like, that's wrong in every single way. It's internal, not external. Doing both makes it confusing. Doing both and calling it external is fucking stupid. Did she even read the PR? or any of my questions? ugh.
I swear, it's like arguing with a boulder and expecting it to listen. An ugly, oversized boulder that comically resembles Jabba the Hutt. No joke.
Whatever, it can be purple. Later, if someone complains that it's confusing, I'll just link them to the damned PR. Then again, almost everything here is confusing AF, so I doubt anyone will actually notice.
Screw this place. So glad I'm on my way out.rant thundercunt the ugly boulder responds jabba the hutt root asks questions root has a code review6 -
"please use a secure password*"
* But don't make it too secure, 20 Charakters is enough.
Why would you fucking do this? The only reason I can think about is a scenario like this:
"How do we store the passwords in the database?"
"Just like anything else?"
"So I create a VARCHAR(20)?"
"Yeah why not? It's good enough for a name, and you shouldn't use your or anyone else's name as a password, so it should be perfect"10 -
Him: Relation databases are stupid; SQL injections, complex relationships, redundant syntax and so much more!
Me: so what should we use instead? Mongo, redis, some other fancy new db?
Him: no, I have this class in Java, it loads all the data into memory and handles transfers with http.
Me: ...... Bye!5 -
Dev: This could be sooooo easily optimized...
Me: Uhm. Don't think so. What's your idea?
Dev: Just use threads.
Me: Nope. Problem requires 3 shared resources per process step, it won't be faster by threading. Shared resource will only lead to locking contention, decreasing performance.
Dev: I don't think that will happen. Can you PROOF to ME that this will happen?
Me: It was your suggestion, so you should proof me wrong. Nice try, but no thanks.
Dev: Yeah, but it's too slow and it should run faster.
Me: If you cannot find a better approach than the current one, it runs as fast as it can while providing correct results. That's not slow. That's just working as intended and designed.
Dev: Yeah, but it's still slow.

"Quality CSS" is much a fucking misnomer. As someone whose been writing this shit at scale for 15+ years I can tell you all CSS code is garbage. The only thing you should do is make sure you don't have name collisions. Classes/components are self contained. And use variables when possible. DRY makes sense usually, but if you're dogmatic about it you shoot yourself in the foot.9

Client reads about MomgoDB ransomware attacks online.
Him: I heard that the MongoDB is not secure, we should use something else in our system.
Me: Those databases got attacked because security features were turned off. If you want you can have an external security team to test the system when it's done.
Him: I don't wana take any risk, so I we should use something else.
We have been working on this system for almost a year and the final stage was supposed to be delivered in a month.
He wants me to replace it with MySQL11 -
Today I'm going to work on my side project that I haven't touched in weeks.
I want to utilize Angular 2 which means I'll need to learn TypeScript. I also want to use the new .Net Core and EF Core 1.0. Oh and I want to handle authentication using JWT!
Wow, that's gonna be a lot of effort to get things off the ground... maybe instead I'll use this time to learn some new concepts. Maybe watch this episode of Fun Fun Function, or maybe this video on writing Assembly code for an app on Raspberry Pi, that sounds cool!
Actually, you know I should really teach myself dependency injection and unit testing for once. I'm so behind the times.
Well, really I should finish this book on design patterns first. Ok, where did I leave off? Page 20 I think... ehh... maybe I'll just work on my side project.
Tomorrow... tomorrow, I'll work on my side project.9 -

I like frontend when using no frameworks. I also like when websites use no frameworks and don't write unnecessary code. So that I can use it even if my mobile internet speed gets locked at 16K and from the consumer perspective I think especially in Europe developers should consider this. Moreover I think it's generally more fun to just write your own site from scratch, it will take longer but it will allow one to be more creative and the whole experience will be more fulfilling.12

Senior manager: I cant understand how this project has taken so long?
Me: Well you hired me as a C# WPF developer and then asked me to deliver an android app without any kind of training so i had to teach myself app development and reverse engineer the undocumented protocol it needs to use to communicate with our product.
Senior manager: Ok. I get that, but it should only take around 3 months to get up to speed though right?
Me (to myself): how in the hell? New platform, self teaching, undocumented protocol for a complex low level real-time system, other responsibilities taking at least 50% of my time and i should be as productive as an outsourced app dev company in 3 months???!! FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!3 -
Client: I need a Website, You have "complete freedom" to choose an apt design, it should be professional and creative.
Designer: Ok.
~ Makes a top-notch Demo inspired from Apple Website ~
Client: It is not professional at all, you should use yellow color for header background. Matching the yellow in the logo, text should be in red. Use blue borders. "Make it more professional!"
Designer: Ok.
~ Client is King. Does exactly as client said ~
Client: Change the font of the website, use something like this (shows Monotype Corsiva). Reduce the image sizes to stamp size. Give a zoom effect to the headings. Increase the text font size to 16px.
Designer: Ok.
~ Client is King. Does exactly as client said ~
Client: Now it looks more professional!! You should hire me to your design department! And now, as I did the major design part you are only eligible for half the payment......
Designer: <<< what will you say? comment it below.. >>>10 -

My CTO in the 'good old times', when he still talked to me and shared his wisdom, once told me what I should know about oop and explained me the world of programming and what really matters:
CTO about oop and C#:
"I think this object orientated stuff is overrated and useless. You don't get finished. I write everything in one file. You should do that too. The fastest way is always the best one."
So, dear readers, you might think, he maybe understood, what oop means. I have to disappoint you. He is as FUCKING STUPID as he sounds.
He didn't understand the whole concept of the language C# or oop.
He doesn't use properties, every single method is static void and there is nothing like an object.
Since there is more from where that came from, this will be continued...7 -
PM has decided to learn linux. Today he asked me if "downloading" linux would make it so he can't use windows anymore.

Client: why do I have to use such a hard password for this website?
Me: For security reasons to protect your content and identity of your clients.
Client: Can't you just use the password that I'm used to? I use it on my banking software, and I've never been hacked so it should be good enough for you!
Me: what's the password that you want me to set up for you?
Client: you ready to take it down?
Me: go ahead.
Client: T ... U ... R ... D. You got that?
Me: ... Yes ...

Who else agrees that the play store should have a section which tells if an app needs a mandatory login to use it ? Like why the hell does a simple offline planner todo app need you to sign-up if you don't wanna use cloud backup. Jeez the user just trusted you by spending valuable time and bandwidth downloading your app. You owe it to him to show him some features of the app before shoving a sign up in his face. As an app developer myself I really think that this kind of behaviour turns off more users than anything else.2

I'm the guy who posted Surface Pro photos recently, just in case you see some similarities.
=========
This, is the Microsoft Designer Bluetooth Mouse.
It is beautiful. Magnificient. Minimalistic. Fast. Accurate.
I first thought it would be my future mouse.
I thought I would use it for years.
I used for an hour, and literally threw it away.
I thought it would be comfortable, since i used cheap logitech mouse which of those were all too high in height.
But, this mouse, is so low in height. It literally puts your hand in the floor.
You, the devRant members, pointed out at my previous rant that it looks, and would be uncomfortable, and I literally said shut up!
Well, sorry about that, I regret my words.
It is piece of beautiful trash.
The click sound is very quiet, the scrolling is very good, but the height of the mouse....
If I keep using this mouse, I would probably get a carpel-tunnel disease(is this correct?).
I guess I should only use this mouse when I need to use it quickly outside, since portability is number one among all mouse in the world.
Next coming, some more Surface pro coding sessions, and Surface pen.
Anything interested about the surface pro? Leave in the comments below!26 -

Windows servers are a joke. A bad joke.
I feel sorry for people who have to work on them and have that as their profession you never used Linux
If someone came up to me and said we should use a windows server for this I'd laugh in his face and fire him. Seriously. I would.
That's how much I hate them. Got it? Ok good ... I'm calm now 😎65 -
So, privacy aware dutchies of devRant.
I was waiting for a friend at Utrecht central Station and saw this sticker (image attached).
Basically, by walking in the building with your wifi and / or Bluetooth active, you're giving them consent to track you.
They use the tracking to see where passengers wait for their train and what the popular routes are.
I thought you should know.

I feel that I should mention my reason for having joined devRant.
Although I often write computer programs, I do not consider myself to be a computer programmer, for the problems which I solve often do not pertain to the method which I use to solve a problem with a computer program. Rather, I am an intelligence analyst, and this has been my title for approximately sixteen (16) years.
I joined devRant not only because I wished to better the computer programs which I write, although this could be better accomplished by again reading the specifications for the programming languages which I use, but also because I wished to join an on-line community of which the members are interesting and competent. As I read threads, I observe that both of these requirements have been matched, with the emphasis being placed on the latter requirement.
I thank the majority of you for maintaining an on-line community which is not (total) crap. Ha.9 -
Seriously? Javascript is the best?Javascript is the future?
Dont get me wrong. I have to use angularjs and nodejs in my work so I am quiet familiar with them. Js csn be usefull and make things easier and simpler but it comes with a price... You can do someting in third amount of effort but you have to debug three times more. Yes you can use typescript but thats not an option always. What about single threaded design yes you can use callback and promises but really? Thats the way it is should be working? And what about that if you need one functionality than you dowbload a module but with that you are started to depend from other 737373737 packages.
I am just simply not getting this hype around JS.24 -

Ok, so I work at this "Great" company. I joined a new team recently with a project that is supposed to be a lot better than many of the other projects we have.
THESE MOTHEERRRRRFUCKERS don't even have hot reload on the app. You have to rebuild the app everytime you make a change. Are you kidding me?! We are using React. One of the basics of React is hot reload. I get into a fucking meeting and one of the devs is like, "I have one important thing to tell you, don't use hooks (a not so new feature in react yet something everyone should use at this point)" and the critical reason we don't use it is because they don't want to confuse the Java devs who are used to their little oop style o_O
Maaaan fuck your developers, it's not my fault you guys can't learn something so simple like functional programming. I haven't even started a sprint yet, I'll burn this app and make you rewrite it all.15 -
I finally moved to Fedora Silverblue 30 which is a really awesome OS.
Silverblue Edition unlike the standard version, runs a immutable core. That means the entire FS is not writable except for certain parts that are mounted to /var. While this is limiting, this allows for atomic updates, which is the whole point of Silverblue.
Now this also might throw off even myself, because I might need to run VSCode in the host and I might need C++ libs. Fortunately there's a tool named toolbox that allows you to use standard DNF inside a OCI container. Now the thing is, now you need to tell your IDE to use it after installing it.
I wrote a little helper script to do just that. I wrote it primarily for VSCode but it should also work for your IDE if you happen to want to try to use Silverblue.
Helper script: https://t.co/sXYOgcwLBg?amp=1
Also if you wanna try Silverblue for yourself, here's some notes:
* To install apps, you need to run flatpak. Make sure you also have the flathub repo listed.
* don't use the Flatpak version of the IDEs. If possible, use the RPM versions. Silverblue allows you to install traditional packages (to some degree, not everything works in this thing because of the immutable design) in the host. So as much as possible if you need dev libs, use toolbox for those.
* Silverblue also comes with podman and buildah installed (aka what if Docker had no daemon and was more secure?)
*Do your updates via rpm-ostree upgrade, or turn the auto updater on if you're lazy
All in all I like this environment, I've used this kind of workspace before (Chrome OS), so its pretty easy for me to get used to.
What do you think guys, think you'll give it a shot?5 -
I broke into hotels WiFi. So here's the setup
They have a main router (TP-Link) which they use for official purposes then they connected the main router to a Microtik router for guests.
I got a glimpse of the software they use for accomodation, billing etc. It runs on php stack maybe MySQL too and some ip can't remember now. I can use wireshark to sniff the packets. Basically should I tell the office of this hotel about the security? Or just let it go.
P.S: Guys you know I'm visiting my gf but I've got some time for myself as she had something to do. So you know I'm not using my laptop when I'm with her.13 -
Let me tell you the story of how a feature request no one asked for got put in an early grave:
PM walks into weekly meeting with a single use case that one user called in about, despite never having this issue during the past year and a half that our app has been in production. PM's boss (genuinely one of the best people i have ever worked with) happens to sit in this particular meeting for no reason other than he felt like he should once in a while.
PM brings up use case and wants to devote 3 weeks' development time and another 3 weeks to test RIGHT NOW while other projects are already in motion. PM's boss speaks up with this: "Listen if this guy is really this upset, we can just tell him to build his own service. All the other end users have no problems with this, so it's not worth spending the resources on, i don't think."
And that is how i went from "this is bullshit" to "i love you" in the span of 20 minutes.2 -
My Task: Create a new application in a custom C#-Framework, to replace screens from the old application.
Me:Fine.
The old application has a Java Frontend.
Me:Fine.
The old application has an Oracle-DB.
Me:Fine.
The old application has its logic fully on the DB.
Me:What ??
You cannot connect to the DB via ODBC.
Me:But why ???
You cannot use external libraries, just our framework.
Me: For what are you thinking i can use to call the functions on the DB
You have to use a custom connection-bus which uses JDBC
Me:Fine.
This connection-bus cannot call SQL Statements and return the result.
Me:WTF, how should i get the data out of the Database ?
We don't know find a way.
Me:Ahh fuck off.3 -
Create an web application(a product of our company). Manager insisted on using X third party API instead of Y third party API.
Now the app is complete.
*Very slow, Shitty User Experience *
I feel shameful for creating such a disaster and also wasted 3 sprints on it. But couldn't do anything because I don't have an authority to take decision which API or technology stack I should use.
Business head and manager had a meeting. Now they want to use Y third party API.
So they called me for discussion, lets me know we will now use Y third party API and it should be completed within a week because we just need to change the API calls in code that's all, despite of knowing all the core logic is built around those API.
Don't know how to react to this :( Want to hit my head on a wall3 -
AAARGH ELECTRON IS SO FUCKING...decently pleasant to use?
So I've been working on a FPGA based synthesizer on a Xilinx Arty A7 board (that little Artix 35T chip is surprisingly capable), and since I hate typing commands into a serial stream for anything even decently complex just like any sane person should, I needed something to build a UI for controlling it and other synth projects while I make the Eurorack compatible enclosure and knobs and stuff. I chose Electron because they said it was simple and easy to make cool looking stuff, fast.
And they were right. In like two hours, with Electron and p5.js, starting from zero since I don't know jack about frontend, I had a pretty nice UI driving the hardware synth and effects modules. Not bad. I should use this more often.11 -
I don't know how i should feel about this....
Honestly only reason i am on FB is bcd i need to use Messenger....13 -
Pet peeve #91847 - when your non technical manager routinely forwards you articles about technical subjects, usually written by non technical idiots, and says "please see if this is something we should be using".
Yeah, I get that your business manager friend has heard Blockchain is amazing, Rsocket is revolutionary, and everyone should now be using Kafka, but none of that makes any sense for our use case.
The clincher had to be telling me to look at AWS groundstation though. And no, we don't have anything to do with satellites...2 -
I started thinking and worrying about numbers much more than before
in the US, you write numbers like this:
1,000.00
in Germany usually like this:
1.000,00
and in programming languages like this:
1000.00
now i wonder how to type a number, whenever i have to use german software
should i use the US way, the german way or the dev way? the wrong one could possibly break it11 -
Recently bought some programmer T-shirts
made me popular, now I am known as the guy with the cool shirts.one of them has this on it:
2b || !2b ? "2b" : "!2b"
my fav joke now
I use these shirts to make friends and it actually works, you should also try ;)11 -
I keep seeing comments like “This should be on spotify” under youtube videos. Guess what — I download them with youtube to mp3 converter, drag n drop them into apple music, and boom, it syncs to my phone. They live among apple music-native tracks. They don’t eat up icloud space (I don’t use icloud), and they don’t disappear when apple music subscription expires. I don’t know any music streaming service that has everything in hi-res or lossless and allows that.11

So I started a 80hour intership today at our Department of Education and this is how it went...
Boss : Design a database to show all applicants that applied for jobs at schools.
*I start thinking which tables and columns I'm going to use and start designing the database, writes out all the tables on paper*
Me : Is there a pc I should work on or should I use my laptop? And which database engine do you use?
B : No you can use your laptop. And btw we use MS Access
*Thinking wtf kind of business even governmental uses Access for their databases. But anyway, start creating the databases and relationships when my boss walks in*
B : No, what are you doing?
M : Im creating the database you asked for.
B : No, you design it on paper. Draw all the tables, draw the report and the form then you come show it to me, if I decide its good enough you can come in tomorrow and start creating it.
*Wtf kind of place is this, are you mentally retarded? You have a IT staff of 3 people, in which only the actual fulltime intern is a qualified IT professional, but when me or him tries to do some actual work, you give us shit about doing what was asked from us*5 -

AGAIN !!! MICROSOFT (MAY GOD SEND THEM TO HELL) GAVE A DEADLY BLOW TO SOMETHING I USED TO LOVE !!
This new UI update is just aweful, i mean, i love github, i work using github, i do so many things with it, or should i say that i used to ....
This update seems so un-natural, it just doesn't fit.
Why would the collabs be shown so obviously ??
Why would the main window be so narrow while the rest is widescreen ????
My eyes get tired so quickly when i use it now.
It used to be something nice, easy to use, but now it is more like a social media than a professional coding tool.
I HATE YOU MISCROSOT WHAT EVER YOU TOUCH TURNS TO BE A SHIT HOLE25 -
Ok, I've tried multiple times to learn it, but just hate React and JSX. I don't know why-maybe because I'm a not a professional developer yet and can't see the right use case for it? I feel that's it's so overly complicated to render some HTML. Should I keep trying to learn this or just work with what I like for my projects, then learn React later? ARGH18

There's this one lead dev in our dpt who keeps posting pictures to our company's Teams 'general' channel with shit in the toilet after someone forgot to either flush or use the brush.
Caption usualy says "I don't mean to cause nausea to anyone, but we are all adults here and should know how to flush / use the toilet brush".
Does every company have this guy or are we the chosen ones?8 -
Personally I am starting to think that any development tools, resources and sites should not be allowed to use marketing dribble.
It should go
-> Land on home page
-> Hi, we are a realtime database cloud host
-> no you cannot host it yourself
-> here is code to speak to our servers
-> here is the cost
->now take it or go.
Something like that, and not
We provide clients with the leading cloud and hosted data solutions that can scale vertically and horizontally on and offline data management keeping people connected and saving kittens.
Fuck you show me one kitten you saved? Lying pieces of shit that do not want to just say hey this is what we have , this is ours, it may not be much but it is what we believe in and if you would like to use it here is how , thank you now move the fuck along our server can't handle so many concurrent connections.2 -
Conversation that probably went down when they designed the pc case I use:
Person A: You know what we should do, we should design quick-release clip things so that you don't have to use tools in order to install or remove a hard drive.
Person B: That's a great idea! Should we also have the opening for the drives to slide in to on the side so the user has easy access to the drives. Or at least make the front panel completely removable for this purpose.
A: No, let's have him remove the fucking gpu in order to install a new drive.
B: That sounds impractical!
A: Fuck it, you know what, lets design it so bad that even that won't be enough. Let them take out the fucking whole motherboard, so basically let them disassemble the whole working pc in order to add a single drive! That will be hilarious! -
daily.
me: i looked into the customer dev's project and even though it's C#, i can use it as a source of inspiration for my own C++ library.
PM: okay, maybe we can even still use it, so that you use a C# dll with your C++ code.
me: ...
other colleague: that's a bad idea. it can already be a challenge to use unmanaged c++ in dotnet, but the other way round it's even more difficult. C# and C++ are languages that behave quite differently and it will be hard to implement a correctly working interface.
PM: okay. well... then please analyze this project's complexity in terms of LOC and create a class diagram, so we get an idea of how complex it is.
me: sure.
PM: hmm... maybe we should split this topic. since dev x will also rely on your library, analyze this project together with him, each of you look at another part of the classes.
me: that's.... i think that's a bad idea. implementing this functionality in this library is my job, not of dev X. he won't be involved in implementing any of the funcionalities and for him, it shouldn't matter how this works.
PM: yeah, but since we are prototyping, maybe we should just violate the "separation of concerns" rule.
me (internally): (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
in the end i could convince him to do it my way, but for fuck's sake... when was the last time he actually succesfully implemented something? 🤦♀️ -
This is why I hate Windows:
For about a month now, I've been learning/working on salesforce, so my Macbook was enough for me.
Today there was a bug in something I built in iur Python backend, and since it has a dependency on windows, I booted the old guy up.
And this is what I see. For about 1.5 hours this went on.
Then it started, but system consuming 100% disk and 80+% CPU. Can't do a thing.
And when zoom finally opened (for a quick meet), the camera turned on halfway down the meeting, and then the system restarted on it's own.
Old man showing that same screen again for more than 30 minutes.
Since I have dual boot on this one, I hard-shutdown it using power button, and now boot into ubuntu 20. This works so beautifully (although it froze for about 5 seconds before popping up the updates panel, something I CHOSE to keep enabled). I try going back to Windows, and it's hell again.
Here I am now trying to set up a ec2 instance and setup the app source there so that I can debug with RDP.
And yeah, Component Object Model is a motherfucking bitch. Person who invented it should die. People who build apps leveraging this should die. Business leaders who say "Hey this app (built with COM) can solve the problem easily, so use this" should die choking on their own phallus. And developers like me who keep using this because "the last guy did this" should die too.
Microsoft and it's products are the death of sane people.
Fucking Gates. Its the same damn hardware.13 -

The idea of a smiley face in text wasn’t invented by Scott Fahlman in 1982. It was invented by a Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov. In his 1969 interview for the New York Times, to whether he considers himself a modern writer, he replied:
“I think that in typography there should be a symbol that conveys a smile, a bit like a paren laying on its side. I would use precisely that symbol to reply to your question”.
This is why russian, Ukrainian and other people still use “)” as a smiley face still, instead of Western “:)” and “:-)”. We sometimes add more parens, like “)))))))” instead of “xD” or “:D”.19 -

I figured out a way to make your code readable!
The main idea: make everything into a function. Each function should be small and you should gradually use past functions to build future functions.
Depending on the language and the size of your code you should make your functions with different sizes, but always keep them small.
This function splitting allows for debugging small parts of your code, avoids repetition and abstracts your code, each making it more readable.13 -

RANT:
Google is just a steaming pile of shit!!
I've recently installed LineageOS onto my phone and wanted to degooglify my life.
So my current Smartphone doesn't have any GApps installed and I get along fairly well.
Should I need anything, I should just be able to use it in my browser right?
RIGHT?
Nono!! As soon as I want to log into a third party Service using Google (older acccounts with the other choice only being Facebook) I need to "verify my identity". And the only option are my old smartphone who still have Gapps on it but are slow and don't accessible when I'm away!
For those who say: "Google is just beeing secure. They don't want anyone to steal your account.". I USE 2FA AND HAVE BACKUP CODES.
BEFORE DEGOOGLING MY DEVICE IT NEVER ASKED SUCH A THING!!! WHAT A PILE OF SPYING SHIT!!!
And the best part, after I remotely started my PC at home and just want to take a screenshot of the message for this post before just using a working session, the message didn't appear.
Somehow google decided that me logging in 15 mins later (same ip) proves my identity?!?!?!
IF THIS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO AI. FUCK THIS SHIT. GOOGLED SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE AN ONLINE CASINO BECAUSE THE CHANCE OF JUST GETTING LOGGED SEEMS COMPLETELY RANDOM!!!
(I also had this prior when using my smartphone browser. There I couldn't "circumvent" this and I was at home. But having this shit on my browser which should've a session is unacceptable.)7 -
I don't know if I should cry or laugh...
Our CMS is a CMS as a Service. So, our providers, for me they all suck, everytime they make a development, everything breaks.
Today's flash news?
Well, basically any page containing some user-made dynamic objects are **empty**
But not only on our site, on their whole network of clients that use their CMS. Everything is broken.
They release new features (I should call them bugs rather) every week, and yesterday's update concerned these pages.
And for the record, they don't test. They wait that we come back and complain to see if their shitty development worked or did not.
This CMS is even worse than your first project in HTML - I mean, your first word document on your mama's computer when you were 3.
Seriously. What kind of non-quality is this?8 -
A couple of weeks ago I had an internship. I worked there with a classmate. We had a simple assignment, but since we're noobs when it comes to web applications (and because you don't learn that in school), we even had a hard time preparing.
Finally, I... I mean "we" decided to use React because it's close to the way we learned to solve problems in school. I asked him to implement a page with a date picker/calendar. I even searched for a repo that. 2 Days later he was still not able to implement it, he experimented with the code, but he
1. didn't even read the readme, just copied the tutorial expecting it to work
2. Didn't even look at the logic behind it.
3. Demanded to use this other repo with less functionality
10-30 minutes should have been more than enough. Instead, I wasted time telling him to read and code properly. He refused the second (and probably also the first), because "Why should I care? We'll be here for 3 weeks and then we're done with this"
Guess whom I'll avoid in any possible group project3 -
I saw this image on IBM's blog. The author was explaining how blockchain could be used to implement self sovereign identities. But, isn't the last step wrong? In order to decrypt Alice's message, Bob should use his private key instead of Alice's public key, right? Of course, while encryption Alice has to use Bob's public key.3

Today I was refactoring code with 10 levels of indentation. Java 8.
Lambdas.
Each one is a block which spans multiple lines, that makes the outer ones hundreds of lines long.
This should be forbidden: () -> { ... }
If you don't understand why, please never send me any code.
PS: intellij shows multiple errors on each line.
PPS: my colleague should be happy that I do not use swear words.6 -

From a Dev at my old place: Don't use git for such a small project, I think we should use email to send our code to each other.
Turned out that this "small project" was a piece for a larger project.
Also turns out there's such a thing as merge conflicts outside of git.
Our code was broken for 3 days once because of his shitty advice.2 -

I don't have a life.
So I'm back at work on a Saturday afternoon (admittedly, I prefer this to staying home or going out to ... Clubbing? Idk what the youth does nowadays) and just about every sound frightens me. Like, I don't mind the squeaky building, but my hormones are off and just about everything sends me into a panic mode. (my mental health rn is... funny 😬) so, I was thinking, I should make something thay covers up the squeaks. Like, plays something classic over squeaks.

We just learned in university that you should use '1 << i' instead of 'Math.pow(2, i)' because it is faster when calculating 2^i...

So I am for sure not the best web developer but I have been working on a personal project for over a year now.

Linux experts, please read if you have time
Seeing all the posts ranting about Ubuntu, I'm starting to wondering : I have a laptop on Ubuntu that I set for my courses at school, I took Ubuntu because I could try at school with VMs, liked it and because between this and Linux Mint, I wasn't aware of all those distributions.
So my reflexion is : Since I've started my internship, which would be the final semester (I'm in last year of studying), I use this computer mostly for personal coding projects, which aren't ambitious and I sometimes use my Windows too, so my computer is a kind of switch-not-so-often.
Should I keep it to Ubuntu or should I try to install something else ?
I've heard of Solus, which got my curiosity, and Arch Linux, but this one is not want I think I need. But seeing all those distributions here made me confuse, I dunno if I should upgrade something that's a kind of placeholder for coding and do stuff when the Windows (which is my main laptop) is busy doing things.
Have any suggestions ?21 -

I just want to fucking read the page, quickly; get off my screeeeeeen!
There should be a standard to add something that lets the browser tell the page if you accept cookies or not, and which options to use; or at least make all the sites use a specific attribute for the elements of the div, so it can be automated (I know this is a dream).5 -
TLDR: Walmart bug 😠
As a dev, I know that bugs happen. But as a dev from a small shop that has many clients and very few devs, I absolutely despise when a large company with many devs has a bug in a product that millions of people use.
WalmartContacts.com. How many devs do they have? And how many dedicated to this 1 product? How many people in QA? (how many on DevRant... lol)
And yet I can't even place an order using their reorder functionality. Seems like they should have this shit down. Seems like they should have all their regression testing ducks in a row. Seems like they should at least show some kind of error message so the user knows what's going on. Instead, no message at all, just the final checkout payment page reloading when I submit leaving me to wonder if my card has been charged or not.3 -
I was teaching a friend of mine how CSS works for her exam and we reach the point where she had to style the tables and she reads:
To avoid having spacing between table cells you can use:
border-collapse: collapse
[...]
border-collapse can also have value "separate"
She fucking freaked out like "WHAT THE FUCK IS EVEN THE SENSE OF IT? SHOULD I HAVE BORDER SEPARATE: SEPARATE? WHY THE FUCK SHOULD I WRITE THAT TWICE? HOW THE FUCK DOES THIS EVEN WORK OUT?"
I just loved how she doesn't know how to make a website but she already hates CSS before even using it on an actual browser2 -
Meeting at 'Derp & Co', the topic was what data model should send the back-end to frontend & app via API calls:
- Coworker: 'we should send the data structured like this for reasons'.
- Me: 'Yeah, this nested object.object.object should do the trick for the front end, but this will be a pain in the ass to convert to POJOs. Why not use something like idk better structure?'
<Mad/intrigued faces>
- CoworkerS: 'Why you need to use POJOs?'
- Me: <More Mad> 'cause I work with java in android... and we have/need/like objects?
<Captain Obvious left the room>
- CoworkerS: 'Oh yeah, well... we can do it the way you say'.
Why you need Objects... what is the next?
- Git? For what? Did not have the usb key from day one?2 -
Hey guys, quick question regarding employers and stuff.
I'm 14 and I've been learning and making things in PHP for around 1 and a half years now. I quite like PHP as, despite the code being quite messy sometimes, it's super easy to learn, and has plenty of features for any use case. My biggest concern is that, when I end up getting a job, whilst 5 and a half years of experience using the language is good, do you guys think PHP will still be in-demand, or should I look towards learning a new stack? Perhaps I should use Ruby on Rails, or Express - React and Redux, or maybe Django? With so many options available for developers, I'm finding it difficult to choose a stack that will stay in-demand in the future. Could anyone help me out with this? Thanks.
Edit: I've been learning Laravel, too.15 -
I decided to learn Flutter, because the idea of a common code base between Android and iOS sounds nice. I'm late to the party, I know.
So I install everything and start typing in the tutorial. TAB... two spaces. I absolutely hate that so let's change it. In the settings, it sends me to a FAQ which more or less says this is the way it is, deal with it. But I want my tabs to be four spaces, every code editor since the dawn of time could do this... I'M PAYING FOR THIS SHIT!!!!!!!
Ok, let's check the JetBrains website, I'm starting to lose my patience, but let's do it. At this point I should also mention that I'm feeling pretty stupid. I mean, I'm checking on the internet about how to do something which obviously must be obvious, why am I not seeing it?
I find a page on the official website. JetBrains' replies are along the lines of "Why would you want that?", "The holly wars between tabs and spaces are over", "Most people like it this way", "The overlords said this is the coding style to be used" (Ok, the last one was me reading between the lines). At the end of the thread, they provide a "hackish solution" (their words, not mine). Which doesn't work. Because why should it?
Not even when PyCharm's debugger randomly shat itself and I had to use print statements I got so angry. That was relatively fine, bugs are a fact of life, and the overall package is good, so I kept paying.
But now you're telling me that I cannot use what should be a common feature of every code editor just because you and the overlords know better?
Well, fuck you and the horse you came in on JetBrains, you've just lost a customer.16 -
Brazil is the country where companies spend the most to find out how much tax they should pay on a product. This process is so complicated that it consumes more than half of all software development professionals available. I'm one of them, and I can't stand working with this shit anymore. I have other projects, but I can never get rid of this niche that is more profitable. It sucks when even though you do what you love, you use it for such a stupid purpose, which is to calculate how much you should give to the government.10

question:I just learnt c++ programming language and i really cant find a use of this language except iot and really simple programs, how can i make gui programs, or should i learn more languages??10
-
I'm gonna start by assuming I'm not the only one who has to deal with this (because that's the case in almost any "Am I the only one that x?"), so here it goes...
How do you deal with the urge to use a framework / library for everything?
I started to notice this behavior in myself a few months back, "there's definitely someone who has already made this, so why should I reinvent the wheel?", and my biggest fear is to become someone who just links chunks of code 'till it works. Did you had to deal with this at some point? What was your approach to this "problem"?3 -
A colleague is walking me trough some of the source code because we try to fix an issue.
colleague: Oh we don't use this anymore
Me: ...

colleague: This part we should refactor someday

colleague: Oh I think this is old code and does not exist anymore.
Me: .. .. ...
Great Colleague BTW :)

good evening folks,
im living in germany and want to get my first domain...
should i use ". de" or ". com", what would you prefer?
It should be an portfolio of myself if i finished it.
We have people from around the world here, how are you handling this? Does it matter at all?
thanks for help.7 -
Only questions I consider stupid are the ones that are permutations of an original question asked constantly from month to month. They should know the answer by now!
Asker: "Theres a bug. I cant log into this account"
Dev: "It's a different dev database, so use the password for that one" -
Why React is soo complicated? Seriously why do we always need to use some stupid shit like this
const [state, setState] = useState();
what the fuck is this? Who designed it that way, why it should always look like shit for no reason? Why its API feels like spaghetti? When i am comparing other front-end frameworks they feel like heaven in their structure.
AND WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME HAVING A QUOTE ON A PARAGRAPH ELEMENT, WHY DO I HAVE TO USE FUCKING HTMLENTITES FROM 2000?
FUCK'ERE35 -
Why is it so hard to remember, that devs need an error message if they should help you. just saying "it does not work" is not helping.
I even wrote you a checklist. so f*ing use it! I'm not there to be called every time just to tell you to do something that's already on this list.
Every. F**ing. Time.2 -
I have to say that I'm a little pissed by all this windows bashing... Can't understand all that Linux is the only OS you should use...
Have you ever tried to Programm C# without windows?!? It's really quirky and shitty if you can't use Visual Studio.
Have you ever tried to do something according to sound and producing... So you probably known something about Logic and for this case MacOS seems to be best.
I think Windows improved a lot over the time and they have done some nice things with the "new" powershell.
Don't get me wrong Linux is quite nice and you can get distros for nearly every use case but if you want your software to run by most of the people with a computer you have to develop for windows...16 -
Okay, wait, is it a common practice to push changes to master that you KNOW break some other features? I always assumed that that's what branches are for and master should be the "to the best of our knowledge it should be production ready"? But apparently in this company you need to hunt for the right revision, interrogating people why suddenly nothing works on your end and half the time it's "oh, this guy has been working on something and it broke half of the stuff others have been working on and isn't covered in tests yet. Use revision 21xkcd7a"7

Im putting together a new stack (i do it every 8-10 months). Queue the dramatic music, its not java this time. So far i got Python Flask and maybe React but im not sure yet. Question is, what db should i use? Ill probably go for a json one, thinking about rethinkdb for now, but if anyone has a better idea, please share.16

yesterday I had to use a Windows VM.
Took me less than 5 minutes to remember why I'm no longer using it.
- I'm doing nothing; CPU is at 100%
- Laggy AF
- Windows Updates not only download, but also install themselves and restart my OS automatically
- right after restart it starts downloading and installing another set of updates (restarted my PC while I was away, I come back - all my work is gone. And this dumbass Windows has a popup "I want to install more updates. When should I restart?")
ooohhh the horrors4 -
So I have to build a frikkin site builder at work. It's supposed to run in the browser. Anyone has any good advice on how I should approach this? Should I use an already present library like GRAPESJS, or should I build it from scratch?3

"I don't think we should be playing with our privates {variables} like that" - framework designer
= context =
It was noticed that we have too many setter functions to change private variables just to do unit tests. So we had a small meeting to discuss what to do about this.
Options:
- don't do the test
- ignore till another time (ie: keep the functions till its a problem)
- put the variables into a provider
- use reflection (the above quote was a reaction to this option)6 -

So our server guy installs a log server (gray log), and tells me to read the documents online and to log our stuff in there
I'm so frustrated and can't use it.

And can't send logs using postman!

I came across this website: https://webdock.io/en
I really like their prices in return for the specs, but they use Let's Encrypt :\
Not sure how good is Let's Encrypt when handing over payment info and not sure if I should be trusting them anyways.
Anyone tried them?9 -
A famous quote attributed to Jamie Zawinski:
"Some people, when confronted with a problem, think "I know, I'll use regular expressions." Now they have two problems."
I am living this nightmare. Joined a project where schmucks are parsing SQL using regular expressions. Talked to a friend, a compiler developer expert. He told me that regexes can't be used for checking if braces are matched. Pumping Lemma. Those fuckers should have used ANTLR or something. Anyways planning to leave this project.2 -

Question to people who use vim as their main editor:
I want to use vim as my main editor and I setup a color scheme. This only looked the way it should in gvim but looked weird in vim. I have read online that this is because of the limited color support of terminals.
So the question: do you use gvim or how do you handle color schemes in vim?3 -
I can't share it but I basically just wrote an email at work that's pretty much a rant.
Basically something like should we use Java for this new component? It needs to communicate with our existing server written in JS.
And someone was like no we should stick with JS and Node because that's what the website is written.
And so I'm like wtf... It doesn't matter as long as everyone agrees to follow the same rules... And then added a part about commenting and documenting stuff being more important so I don't need to keep doing CSI on the codebase when something blows up.2 -
This little game took me like 2h of development, it's build without any framework whatsoever.
It is based on my memory of a very old game my brothers used to play on DOS, it was used to teach how to type superfast
Little details on how this works: the inputs at the bottom are programmed to be used with keys (only letters), ENTER and TAB, no need to use mouse in this game to move around, just hit tab to move to next, hit enter to confirm what you typed.
I know I should upgrade this to use a list of actual words instead of just random letters, but never wanted to actually work on it again.

I highly recommend trying it on a PC, also contains Ads, not invasive, tho

Spent hours synthesizing few novel ideas on Notepad, and then did Ctrl-A, Ctrl-X so I could just paste it in my private blog. The blog wouldn't respond, ssh'd into the server to troubleshoot, and then realized my habitual use of Ctrl-C destroyed that very content I spent hours on. Only realized this after I got the blog back up running again. X-( I should start getting into habit of using VSCode or Gvim more.8

I always had this mentality that I shouldn’t rely on a certain library or framework for my entire project because what if one day they stop supporting it. (Yeah I’m talking to u vuetify) That’s why I came up with this code structure that for everything that I wanna do I have a ‘driver’ library all coded by myself that interacts with that third party framework or library so if they stop supporting it I could just change a couple of lines of code in my driver file and my codebase should be working again. But I feel like this ‘driver’ approach is not the most efficient way of going in terms of memory usage. Do you guys think I should keep it simple and directly use those libraries or this is actually not a bad approach.7

My code works.
Well, it should, but not like this.
I've set some datas to a nested form, saved by a variable named 'stat1', however the code won't work unless I use a variable named 'fields'. Not 'stat1'. I'm only 24 years old and I already feel too old for this shit.3 -
Me(backend developer tries to be full stack): What type of font should I use for heading and body?
Client: Something like comic sans.
Me: should I use comic sans then?
Client: No this font is very informal though.
Me(thinking): All font seems similar to me.
After two hours of searching
Me: I think comic sans is best for you.
Client: No...
(Most difficult part of frontend is choosing appropriate font)4 -
Second night of my life wasted trying to get fucking Webpack to work. I just want a goddamn working dev server. I just want it to auto-refresh my browser, and yet fuck all happens if I use the "--hot" option for "webpack serve" in my npm start script (as described in the extremely terse and overwhelming documentation). How do the people from create-react-app configure this cancer? Jesus fucking Christ, this is all so overwhelming and extremely confusing, maybe I should quit web development altogether.2

Started a new contract:
Dev: "here, take this draft document containing a rough explanation of the requirements and write this service that exchange messages with these two subsystems"
Me 😐"ok"
-- couple weeks later --
Dev: "oh btw, you should go through ALL the fields in those messages described in the 'documentation' and double check them because we use millimeters and they use meters, we measure milliseconds and they use seconds. You should handle conversions when you deal with those messages"
Me (in my mind): "fucking son of a bitch! Why didn't you tell me this little piece of information at the beginning so I could have accounted for that instead of bloating the code now with your spaghetti style, full of horrible hacks, ifs and workarounds?
Me 😐: "sure, I will"
(don't worry, in the end I managed to find a clean solution for that 😉) -
You know what i really like about right now? That is not like in 2016 when a new Javascript framework was release every day that does the same as jQuery but different, now days i can use it and everybody says "nice" instead of "you should do this with X.js with 4000 libraries on ES^N edition" to quote an articule i read on the time "I need to display data on a page, not perform Sub Zero’s original MK fatality."2

80 PERCENT Of in-person transactions use COBOL
95 PERCENT Of ATM swipes rely on COBOL code
220 BILLION Lines of COBOL in use today
"Experienced COBOL programmers can earn more than $100 an hour when they get called in to patch up glitches, rewrite coding manuals or make new systems work with old." [1]

I love the whole NodeSchool thing, so not really a dis to them - but this is a good example of some of the problems I have with web tutorials. I think things like npm should be explained before you have someone use them. Just like jQuery, you can end up with a majority of people taking parts of their stack for granted.1

I'll never use code hacked by another dev for work.
I got code that only solves one single fucking use case but there are way more to consider ...
The way the problem is solved ... not dev friendly to use, clean code is non existend and did I mention that it doesn't solve many other important use cases?
All has to be refactored and rethinked and everybody complains about why it takes so much time and the code should not be a technical masterpiece.
I'm sick of these bullshit devs, not taking their role as professionals serious.
Devs should not only learn how to code but also to work as a professional. Soft skills shouldn't be optional and the way how IT is seen has to be reshaped.
There are reasons why in these days the developed software has a lot of bugs and is not flexible. Everything has to be done now, changes come so often that they conflict with previous ideas and nobody knows the complete customer specification so the conflict shows in dev phase up.
Most devs work like they are in a hackerspace. Stop doing this.
You can do this in your freetime but stop doing this when you work in a professional environment.2 -
After having tried my hand at setting up Linux on my personal PC, something has dawned on me.
I don't think Linux should be used as a desktop experience. I absolutely love the idea and concept of Linux, and of course use it for servers and the like, but with the current state of most distros, I don't think it's a suitable replacement for Windows/MacOS.
Any good arguments against this?20 -
I've been constantly switching between my Linux PC and Mac. What a pain in the ass. Why can't they have same keyboard layout?
Don't hate me for this but linux seems more productive to me. Mostly because of the ease of use and the shortcuts. I mean yeah I can create new shortcuts and stuff for my Mac but why should I bother? Any productivity tips for mac?7 -
#Question
I never worked directly developing. All my experience is by myself: I try things, they can work or not. So when I am writing a new site/app, I always have millions of doubts of how should I proceed with X or Y.
EXAMPLE: I am dealing of data from a mySQL in a PHP website right now, so I never know how should I treat it. Should I use a function to get data from database and return an array with all fields? Is there a better way?
So my question is: where can I learn that kind of thing? Is there any specific book you recommend? Is there a website? Another way to learn this?
It is easy to me to learn about commands and the programming language itself. There are plenty of books and websites, but I could never find an answer to these questions I have.
Thank you so much in advance!15 -
I prefer three spaces-wide indentation in my code. This is unconventional to say the least, as many people prefer four or two spaces width.
This is why I use tabs — every developer that works in my company can do two clicks in their IDE to set the indentation they like, and I realize I must not force it my way with three spaces. Indeed, one of my colleagues prefer four spaces, and it took them less than a minute to set this up and not to worry about it ever again. To me, this sounds like a good alternative over arguing and finding a compromise that "everyone in the team are okay with".
This way, every developer who comes to my company at any time ever wouldn't have to get used to the indentation width standard that is different from what they're already comfortable with.
I want to live in the world where "convert indent" button in IDEs that replaces spaces with another spaces is dusty and abandoned. I met those who use four spaces, the most popular standard, who also thought everybody who disagrees with "The Standard" should change their ways. This makes me sad.2 -
An app I wrote in react native broke. It just checks for new episodes and opens the actual download link so this all the ads. The URL seems to have changed from www to www1.... So the Find/Replace broke.
I don't think I will be using RN though because I can't access all features like root commands, that can be done from Android SDK. And probably easier to access all Android's features?
So should I try to fix the RN code (prolly 1 line) or port the whole project to use Android SDK?11 -
Well for starters the website that gave you assignments on security of web applications shouldn't have an SQL injection vulnerability on the login page.
Next would be the method of teaching, they would skip what not to do and go straight to what you should do. This in turn causes people to use the exec command in php that actually takes a POST parameter.
And stop allowing teachers to be lazy fucks that don't explain shit and only give you assignments.
And finally when telling the teacher that a method he uses would cause another vulnerability the teacher should properly fix this issue not say it is for an "advanced course".
Yes I am pissed -
There's people that should be in jail.
Or at least they should be banned to use a computer. And I'm looking directly at this company that provides a dodgy API, which is just a ton of static XML files hosted behind an apache. One file per language, of course. You want the prices too? Another url. In German? Oh, another url.

I have to confess: I don't use a version control system. But, as of today, I'd like to change that.
I have a few questions for the community:
What VCS are there and what are the differences? I've heard of Git, but are there any others?
Can you recommend any hosting services? I know of Github and Bitbucket. Are there others? Which is better?
Are there any tools you use? Or just the command line application?
Finally: Can you recommend any tutorials for using these VCS?
Thank you in advance,

My TL has his custom rules to format code, we use python and black as formatter, still, We have to remember his rules. He forced us to mention type rather than compiler do it for us. Our pr will not be approved until we do this.
My point is if you want to follow this then forced it programmatic way, event better use a language which gives this all by default. why we should remember all of these rules. PC: Yo' bro, remember when you had no clue at what you were doing and you didn't buy an 80 Plus certified PSU and used stock intel cooler? Yeah man you're going to need to replace both of these things, that'll be $280!
Of course this fucking happens, knew I should have waited till I actually knew what I was doing with PC hardware!5 -
Yesterday I asked a question on stack overflow about what algorithm I should use in order to parse command line strings like in gnu getopt for example.. And I've got downvoted for no GOOD FUCKING REASON. On top of that, my question is on hold. WTF?! For some time now stack overflow is becoming more and more a community of fucking cunts, arse-holes and toxic people.
Title:
" What parser algorithm is best suited for command line parsing? [on hold] "
My question:
"I want to write my own command line library from scratch. What algorithm should I use in order to parse gnu style args like in getopt for example ? I mean what's the best way other than tokenizing and parse them in a naive way? Should I try to look at LR, LL algorithms or this is way too overkill?"
Their response:
"Your question sounds like "I want to do X. What's the best way to do it?". Too broad, you need to be more specific about what problem you're having. (And keep your question clean. No meta-stuff in there.)"
I mean, what more context-specific reason should I add you dense motherfucker!? I want an algorithm to parse your momma's cunt so hard 'till it blows the fuck up. This what you want? You fucking senseless piece of garbage. God, give me a car to run over their fucking internet cable and over their head, too.8 -
I am an stupid human being. How many times should I experience the same problem to learn from it? I don’t know why should I possibly be obsessed by latest MacOS updates? This fucking error ruined my day. Those fucking idiot coders in Apple must use some unit tests (including transparent iTerm in second display). Fuck you all. My £1600 Macbook pro is literally useless until some fucking coder finds what is wrong in their NEW update.3

A : Why don't we remove this feature ?
B : We might be needed in the future.
A : You have to stop think what we might needed in the future with our current state.
............
(After several conversation)
B : So, should we replace X with Z ? Since we only need the X
A : Don't, I can see we might use Z in the future.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK IS THIS SHIT.
In my opinion, companies attention to detail is one of the main things that I use to determine how good they are and if I should use them. This kind of thing where the FUCKING ENGINEERS IGNORE THE ISSUE AND REFUSED TO FIX IT is what really pisses me off. At least companies like apple ship working products while Microsoft is sitting here on their asses trying to make the most money with minimal effort by screwing over their users and repurposing their Windows phone OS for use on laptops. Read: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...undefined fuck microsoft actual rant dumb interns engineers my ass fuck up windows attention to detail4 -
First post on devRant... Aaaaand it's university hw... I can't wrap my head around this...
So, the problem is: I have to implement writing and printing 64 bit decimal integers (negative and positive with 2s complement) in NASM Assembly. There are no input parameters, and the result should be in EDX:EAX. The use of 64 bit registers is prohibited.
There is a library which I can use: mio.inc
It has these functions:
- mio_writechar (writes the character which corresponds to the ASCII code stored in AL to console)
- mio_readchar (reads an ASCII character from console to AL)
It also has to manage overflow and backspace. An input can be considered valid or invalid only after the user hits Enter... It's actually a lot of work, and it's just the first exercise out of 10... 😭
The problem is actually just the input - printing should be easy, once I have valid data...
Please help me!3 -
Me: If I am going to refactor this code I should use test driven design

Google decided to deprecate the ProgressDialog class in Android O (26). Now I have to deal with all those deprecation messages in Android Studio!
From the docs: "ProgressDialog is a modal dialog, which prevents the user from interacting with the app. Instead of using this class, you should use a progress indicator like ProgressBar, which can be embedded in your app's UI. Alternatively, you can use a notification to inform the user of the task's progress."
They also bugged the Toolbar! Nice.3 -
As always IE and Edge holding back progress. Dying to use CSS variables but can't because of these 2 wank browsers. Once this is fully supported it should wipe out the need for pre-processors (IMHO). Not that I feel the need to use pre-processors anyway.1

Hey, privacy guys, I've recently decided to switch to DDG, and I just came across this DDG browser addon. It promises things like
"block all the hidden trackers", which is what AdBlock can also do, "force sites to use an encrypted connection", which makes no sense since most websites using https will redirect to https automatically, "Search Privately", which is already supported by them without installing the add-on, and "Decode Privacy Policies" which is the only feature that seems to be useful. Should I use it?3 -
Is booting linux from a drive a good way to start with linux if I'm not too sure I should make it my main os? The only thing keeping me back at this point is gaming since it's my gaming rig but idk I have 2 distros I want to use/decide between that I've loved on vms in the past but it's just me actually going through with doing it22

I'm currently in a bit of a predicament.
Here's the deal:
I want to separate my back-end from my front-end code a bit more (currently PHP code is mixed up with all the HTML, Javascript etc.. basically: front-end and back-end are one).
The question here is: how should I go about this?
In my current project, I have written some javascript code with jQuery that checks whether the user is logged in or not (checks for an auth token and UID to be present in the cookies).
However, this results in the page (in this case a dashboard that only logged in users should see) being visible for a moment before the user is redirected to the login page...
How could I go better about this (No, I won't use AngularJS for this)?7 -
Just had to debug this javascript bug. Not sure if I should get a better keyboard or only use strongly typed languages.
if(rating.upperBouds > maxRating) {
// this code never runs no matter what value I give to upperBounds

Do you have a good use case to start learning kubernetes using the 300$ Google cloud startup bonus?
I need to build up knowledge because my work doesn't do it, so it could be either docker, or kubernetes. Both has to be done in a cloud platform because I have to do this in my spare time...
So do you have use cases and tasks for someone who's completely new to kubernetes? Or should I start with docker?5 -
I hate when programmers never want to go out their comfort zone. They should be relegated into a hell spinned inside a Virtualbox instance.
I have this *** angular setup. We want to try to keep the dev environment congruent between all the colleagues.
The decent programmer would use a node version manager, or try to keep up with everything. LOLNOPE THEY FUCKIN' SPUN A FRIGGIN' VAGRANT VIRTUAL MACHINE RUNNED WITH ADMIN PERMISSIONS which is slowing everyone down. A single "npm i" now requires half an hour.
I tried to use YARN that is faster and makes a mergeable lock, NOPE WE SHOULD KEEP USING THAT STUPID NPM INSTALL that is slow AF and sometimes messes up the versions.
I tried to make 'em use the peerDependencies correctly but LOLNOPE WE SHOULD RELY ONTO THE AUTOMATIC PEERDEP RESOLVER INSIDE NPM7, SO YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOUR VERY SAME LIBRARY IS INCLUDED OR NOT.
Thank god i'm changing job. -
How about a rant about devrant?
Where the heck can you find info about how stuff works within a rant?
How do I embed a picture or a link properly?
How do I use the smileys?
Actually, the post-window itself should empower the user to do these things, but all you get is the attach image thingy.
I presume this all works out of the box when ranting with your mobile phone or something, but using the port rant thing on the site, I have no clue.
So, can someone please link me to the OBVIOUS location where this info can be found and that I missed? Thanks.22 -
Just found out that something like this would actually work in Java:
int a = 2;
switch(a) {
case 1:
int b = 1;
break;
case 2:
b = 2;
}
I know about the variable scoping part, but that doesn't means if the language allows this kind of shitty code you should use it.. Fuck took me 15 mins to resolve the merge conflicts. As during merge the 1st case was partially removed. And the code was filled with these kinds of logic. This could have been done in a minute without the shitty code..4 -
Me post a lot of investigation in a slack thread and come to a conclusion
20 mins later engineers in thread post things like they didn't read anything I wrote and come to same conclusion, but involve other parties AGAIN making us all look dumb
Why do they just ignore what I wrote, literally linked the same splunk dashboards and same error numbers that I did. I don't get it.
Why should I care? I hoped I could use this as a way to convince manager once again that I do the things he asks me to, but it seems it's all useless.
Really want a new job but tough times, should be happy I even have a job I guess -
Would it be clever to use a password manager with randomized passwords and also store them in chrome's password vault?
I mean it's less secure, yes, but should something bad really happen I can just change the password and this would be a good upgrade in terms of user experience
What do you guys think?16 -
Okay so.
I have a docker instance with 2 running apps. Normally one of them is just a proxy to the other one, so a http req to app0 is redirected to app1 and the same with response.
This works perfectly on bare machine, i can just rewrite the ip in the config file and it works. Now my boss decided that yeah docker is absolutely needed for this software so i have to containerize it.
Thing is docker seems to break local ips? I cant use localhost/, nor assigned ip. Is there a way i can debug this, or what should i look up??? Im lost, this is devops afaik and im far from devops.2 -
Guys I need an advice. I have a very good idea for a mobile app, but at the moment I know only C++. What would you recommend me to learn for building a mobile cross platform app, and, of course, what tools should I use? I'm completely lost, but I really want to develop this.4

I don’t know about you but I use backticks for every string in js. I want to know that I can always use quotes and apostrophes and backticks ensure this. Also they allow templates and Babel got me covered when it comes to old browsers.
I don’t see the reason why should I use something but backticks in 2020

I hate when programming books have shit code examples.
Just came across these, in a single example app in a Go book:
- inconsistent casing of names
- ignoring go doc conventions about how comments should look like
- failing to provide comments beyond captain obvious level ones
- some essential functionality delegated to a "utils" file, and they should not be there (the whole file should not exist in such a small project. If you already dump your code into a "utils" here, what will you do in a large project?)
- arbitrary project structure. Why are some things dumped in package main, while others are separated out?
- why is db connection string hardcoded, yet the IP and port for the app to listen on is configurable from a json file?
- why does the data access code contain random functions that format dates for templates? If anything, these should really be in "utils".
- failing to use gofmt
These are just at a first glance. Seriously man, wft!
I wanted to check what topics could be useful from the book, but I guess this one is a stinker. It's just a shame that beginners will work through stuff like this and think this is the way it should be done.3 -
So I'm writing this shitty kernel/os/abomination with Soldierofcode and I noticed that, to do essentially anything further than a shell, I should use UEFI.

I made a custom CMS using Phalcon in PHP for a client we needed to get out of WordPress. I'm happy with it and even considered forking it into a product to expand upon and sell, but I'm starting to wonder if this is a bit behind the curve.
So if I made a CMS today, what language and database combination should I use? I went with Phalcon because I was impressed with the performance, and because I'm the most experienced with PHP, but I'm open to any and all suggestions3 -
I've been a windows user for a long time now, but I've been thinking of trying out Linux sometime soon. Which distro should I start with? And can I still play steam/origin games? I might also use a VM to see how I like it before I move over.

Hey devRant!
University student here. I’m trying to learn how to build scalable applications. I figured what better way to learn, than to ask this community!
So, some questions:
1. What is a good stack for scalability
2. Regarding microservices, when and where should you use node, .net, and go
3. I hear much talk about docker and kubernetes... how would you use these concerning microservices
Thanks!7 -
A: Do you know Big O?
B: Yea I know Big O. Who doesn't know Big O?
A: So what's the Big O of X?
B: It's ....
A: Oh what about Y?
B: Oh that has a bigger Big O.
A: Hm... how about this one?
B: That's a really big Big O. Why not use mine?
A: Ooh that looks impressive, very small. So which Big O should we use?
B: Well there's a constant trade off, even though small is good, in this case I think the bigger one works better.4 -
Any SUPER AWESOME patient... JS PRO that wants to help me with a few problems it would be appreciated..
Okay so I'm having trouble with JavaScript and this can apply to other languages but for now focus on JS. so I'm learning how to manipulate the DOM and I don't really know how to start I picked out a tutorial but I'm afraid I wont learn a lot from it. here are my concerns and yes they don't all have to do with the DOM
> I don't know how to learn without mimicking what the person is doing and when I try something that's related I cant use the related information and techniques because I either don't remember, dont want to do the literal same thing for something slightly different or dont know how and somethings not working even though it should be.
> I do it one way and when people offer to help its just me getting responses of how it could be done completely different and I dont understand why either way should be used
> Why should I have to generate a webpage or div if I can just use HTML5
>whats the difference between JSON and Arrays???????????
>I am not good with arrays, lists, dictionaries, (I'm stretching to python with lists and dictionaries)
>I recently tried the basic quiz project and it was more complicated and fun than I was giving credit for but I want to do it a different way to show myself I learned but I cant because I dont understand how the person managed to loop through the entire array printing the individual questions and answers to the div. like I understand the parts that use the html tags in the code but I dont know how when or what to use it all
>any good javascript/dom resources?
At this point Im just stressing because all I want is a basic skillset with JS but I dont feel like Im learning anything and I dont know how to apply my knowledge or improve upon the programs ive been learning from or trying to make. and arrays have been tripping me up to especially since I have no clue what the difference is between them and JSON and why I should use one over the other and dont get me started how shit I am with manipulating them. FUCK IM STUPID10 -
Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.
Thanks for some advices and pro/cons11 -
Sorry for posting this, but I would like to know if you think that this notebook would be good for programming. I will put arch linux on it.

Well, jokes on me, I'm using MS Word (latest) for my master thesis. I know, i know, I should use LaTeX for such things or Scrivener, but I just had enough of that bullshit of learning another language which costs me time that I don't have.
Back to my problem: I don't get why for christ sake that SmartArt bullshit was programmed in the first place!?!? It lacks of everything to configure and gives you just a pain in the ass whenever you use it!
Whoever designed that peace of crap should use that shit forever as punishment!

A question for Web developers:
I'm planing to start working on a web part of my project. Important part is that it's supposed to be working with MongoDB. The idea is to build a small digital library, so the main functionalities should be user registering, his login, querying database for books, showing list of results and viewing pdf files up to 200MB size.
Since I have almost no experience with web technologies, I would like to hear your advices and opinions on the technologies/languages I should use and learn. Should I go with JavaScript? Php? Something third?
Please note that this is a school project on which I'm working after my job, and not something to be deployed to customers.
Thank you4 -
We just finished a small discussion or debate about why we should use uuid instead of other field or property like name.
Gets funnier when you know the guy who started the debate proposed uuids few weeks ago.
My vp engineer and junior frontend (that's the team) both said "having not strong feeling about one or the other"
While they were finishing that sentence I started this rant.1 -
Okay so update/JS pt2
This is just me throwing my thoughts down and some questions
I've been practicing arrays/objects and loops more and I'm getting more understanding it helps that you can do them both at the same time. But like I need more looping techniques (if that makes sense) like instead of always using for(let i = 0; i <= x.length; i++) and I havent completely learned how or when I use for(x in y)
Questions.
• what's the difference between class objects and objects that look like a python dictionary
• when should I use classes over the other kind of classes
• any good resources and projects I can practice with loops cause I'm kind of running dry on ideas
and I dont wanna google cause I barely already have no social interaction2 -
So, I manage my server with docker containers (nginx-proxy and the letsencrypt-companion). I limit access to some subdomains using basic auth, but I want to use client certificates for convenience.
So my questions to the experts:
1) Do you know a good (and convenient) way to manage client certificates ? This should include revoking certs and allowing specific certs only for specific subdomains.
2) Should I use my letsencrypt CA for this or would a self signed CA better suited?
3) Any things I should be aware of?1 -
I’m a front-end developer. Whenever I need to introduce a new library or framework into the project, I always wonder if this tool is the best choice we have? How about its alternative? It always triggers my decidophobia.
I think one kind of data I can refer to is how many real repositories use it. So I crawl the JS projects on GitHub and record their dependencies usage and build a website called npmusage to check whether I should use it or not. More than 85K repositories have been fetched already.6 -
C++ or Python for coding interviews?
I used to do a lot of developments in Python and JS/TS. But now I have been doing a lot of back-end stuff in Golang at work (1+ year) and C++ for some of my side projects. So when I started grinding leetcode, I used C++ all the way.
Today this question struck me and I keep thinking if I should continue with C++ or use Python, which will help me focus more on the question than the language.5 -

Trying to write a program a la `man` in ncurses and just, is this hell?
I just want a floating header, a scrollable main body that reads from a file, and a command line footer, why is that so difficult? I finally got it to handle resizing terminals but now I need to try to compile it for windows, which does have unofficial ports of ncurses, but I have no idea how to use them.
Should I just restrict the windows version to a non-interactive command instead of a TUI like I want?2 -
ISO floating point numbers are essentially wrapped in a hardware-level monad because the normal meaningful values aren't closed over basic arithmetic so conceptually wrapping everything in Maybe using the 'infectious sentinel value' NaN leads to substantial speedups.
With this in mind, I think high-level languages that have a Maybe should use those and have the language-type float refer to a floating point that isn't NaN.2 -

I have a long question for developers out there... bear with me.
I'm currently learning and devoting all my time towarda Java and have been for the past two years although it's moving slow because of summer courses. The catch to this is, I'm not sure what I'm learning it for. How do I implement this code, I'm not sure what to do with it. The only project I plan on doing is a discord server management bot... besides that, I'm blank... Is java used in web development? What exactly should I be using it for..?
I'm planning on learning javascript, php, mySQL, and CSS I pretty much have down but I don't know what to use them for. Besides how I want to script for the game Hackmud which is in javascript.
I'll put it into simpler terms... I love java and I'm looking forward to mastering it but I don't know what to use it for. I want to use it on my free time and all but use it for what? One more thing: what other languages go hand in hand with java? Sorry if it's confusing lol.3 -
I hate when I visit a new web framework's site and see documentation that promotes HTML tags like this:
<input type='text' name='foo' value='{{val}}' />
If you don't know enough about which quotes you should use and why... I have no faith in the quality of your software solution. -
My most consistent enemy at work is this fucking system I have to work in, holy shit. Not only is there no default support for shit you would really think there should be, no real control over the interfaces with the UI, and the far too complicated method they use to magically make said interfaces, but we also have to use their build environment to build this shitty thing. So builds take anywhere from 4 to 12 minutes a pop and ridiculous style guide will stop the build, no questions asked, for dumb violations like spaces between if and (. And it doesn't catch these, sometimes, until 7 or 8 minutes in. I have wasted so much time on this. And seeing as we work in 2 week sprints that are really 7 to 10 day sprints based on whatever hair goes up my bosses ass and have to deliver feature complete in those two weeks, I can't really afford all this nonsense. I used to joke about having an alcohol problem, but I think I actually may be developing one at this point.

Hey guys,
I´m trying to create a generic class, which inherits from an Interface, which is also an generic.

Is this possible? It´s a bit complex ^^ but that´s just my thought :)3 -

{name:Type,name:Type->code}, and thus writes a clean code.

Person A : "wtf is this shit? why it works?"

- Beautiful is better than ugly.
- Simple is better than complex.
- Readability counts.
- Special cases aren't special enough to break the rules.
- There should be one-- and preferably only one --obvious way to do it.
- If the implementation is hard to explain, it's a bad idea.
-...

Question:
For a real time chat (web) app. Whats the best technology to use for this? I dont want the chats to have delays or glitches (in case it gets sent but not delivered etc).
Backend stack is java spring boot
How about kafka? Or rabbitmq? Or socket.io? Should i use redis? Should i use AWS SQS? Talking about cloud what AWS tools should i be using to handle this the best way?
Note: it must be scalable. Meaning if i wanted to extend this software more by building a mobile app (aside from web), i should be able to use the same backend easily
Note 2: it is not ONLY a chat app. Chatting is just 1 out of many functionalities. So chatting is not the main component of the project just a side thing
Keep in mind the backend is a microservice architecture etc. Database postgresql.14 -

Rust's Fn traits feel weird. The argument tuple is a generic parameter, but the return type is an associated type, even though Rust is supposed to use Hindley-Milner type inference, so inferring through return type should always fail if this were a regular trait.
Then, this would mean that blanket implementations for Fn(T) and Fn(T, U) should conflict because AnyTrait<(T)> and AnyTrait<(T, U)> aren't mutually exclusive. I tried, they work just fine.
There's some weird and I suspect unnecessary special case magic here, and I'd like to uncover it.17 -
So I've just about finished a simple application practice project, it's just a program that will show you today's horoscope for different signs from an RSS feed, but I'm wondering if or how I should include disclaimers/credits for things like fonts (The two fonts I use are both open source.), and/or things like the tools used for building it (Written with Python and Tkinter in Atom.)? Do I add it under a "Help" menu or something?
What are the rules and etiquette? And is there anything specific I should include in a separate file? This is also kind of my first proper project.4 -
Is GraphQL worth it? It promisses to keep some load away from backend programmers but what about this scenario:
There's a list of items with scroll load/infinite scroll. There can be several filters as well as the Option to change the ordering of the list items.
With "traditional" REST, I'll hit the DB with one request, get the data in the right order to the backend, might itterate over it once to add additional information, cache the result in Redis/Memcache and send it off.
Using GraphQL, the frontend has to load all entries first, sort them in JS (which probably is slow on mobile devices), and then display it. No matter how "expensive" the query is, there's no caching.
Is that about it? Did I get something backwards?2 -
One of my least favourite parts of the world of programming is the "there's a usecase for everything" attitude. Like take this part of "You don't know Javascript" https://github.com/getify/...
> But var is still useful in that it communicates "this variable will be seen by a wider scope". Both declaration forms can be appropriate in any given part of a program, depending on the circumstances.
Now you would imagine that after this comment the author added a good example of this or at least had a reference to another part of the book where it showed this, but nope it goes on to include this note:
> It's very common to suggest that var should be avoided in favor of let (or const!), generally because of perceived confusion over how the scoping behavior of var has worked since the beginning of JS. I believe this to be overly restrictive advice and ultimately unhelpful. It's assuming you are unable to learn and use a feature properly in combination with other features. I believe you can and should learn any features available, and use them where appropriate!
Which again, "durr there's a usecase for this feature" or rather it's coming with basically an insult towards people who don't think you should use var without actually addressing anything. And what usually happens when someone tries to "there's a usecase for everything" is to either be really vague, or come up with some silly thing that you "might" do. -
One of my collogues seems to now think Excel macros are a good thing and something that should be used on the reg.
I don't like this. Crappy in-house software is my department. And I won't use F***** Excel for it either2 -
I like docker. I think the technology is cool and I have a few ideas on how I can use it. But I sometimes think I'm too stupid to use it.
I'm currently trying to convert parts of my dev environment to use containers. But following tutorials on it confuses me and I get lost with it really quickly and get discouraged for a few days until I give it another try and fail again
Like fuck I already know I'm mediocre but this makes me feel like i should go into a manual labor field instead of software development6 -
Someone here on devrant told me
You cant learn everything. Its impossible. Instead you just have to learn how to learn
Now i got flashback to this several weeks later
And i begin to realize as i learn gitlab ci/cd (i only know github cicd so far)
Wondered
How would i integrate this cicd with spring boot java backend app?
Or angular?
Or nextjs?
Or nodejs?
Then I realized
I dont have to fucking learn all of that individually
Instead i can just learn how gitlab cicd works once
And then apply that same concept with slight modifications to whatever tech stack is in use
Does this make sense?
Is this how i should think while i learn new tech?
Is this the proper way of learning how to learn?7 -
After spilling covfefe on my imac magic keyboard i looked up on yt how to fix this and they said to put Isopropyl Alcohol on it. Just finishes my ITIL course (basically IT support management). It was pretty interesting, if somewhat irrelevant to me, but I got paid to do it (and get a qualification) so that's fine.
My issue was with one specific thing the instructor said - 'IT support always complain people who can't fix basic issues shouldn't be allowed to use computers. Wrong. Customers don't need to know anything about IT, that's your job'.
His analogy was that we can drive, or cook with a microwave, but we don't know how cars or microwaves actually work in at a technical level. In the same way, customers can use Word, but need us to recover their deleted files and install Office.
This seems sensible, but if you follow the analogy, there's a disparity.
I might not be able to *fix* a microwave, or know how the components inside it work. I can, however, cook with it. I know it won't work if the door isn't closed, or if it isn't plugged in.
Similarly, you need a license to drive.
Customers don't need to be able to *fix* the tools, but they should be able to *use* them properly. Turn them on, log in, open & use some programs, browse the web, etc. If they aren't confident in this - well, why are we giving an expensive bit of kit to them? I wouldn't hand a chainsaw to someone who doesn't know how to use it. Or a fine piece of china to someone clumsy.
I think people should need to prove they can use the tools before they are allowed them. They'd be happier in the long run.2 -
Alright devs, in the US, can I not get a SIM card on which I simply put some money, and can use that until it runs out? Seems there is a 30-day limit tied to everything!!! I don't need data for 30 days!!!
This is totally possible in Europe, what is going on with regulation in US? Seems like it should be illegal.4 -
I need a help salesforce guys,
I am trying to automate Salesforce sandbox creation, then copying the client secret and key from an app and then use those credentials for some application.
Sandbox creation and deletion is done, but I am not able to get how should I fetch client credentials. I searched internet, and I only find gui method : login, select app, select view, get credentials.
At last I wrote a shitty selenium script but I don't have faith in this approach.
If anybody can give me insight, It would be great help.5 -
All you emacs cultists, share with me your wisdom. As someone who wants to learn how to use it I have a few questions.
what resources should I use to learn more about it and configuring it?
What's the difference between emacs, doom emacs and all the others I've heard about?
Are you able to and do you use the GUI or the CLI versions of it?
And are there any packages equivalent to VSCode's Intellisense?
please for the love of God don't turn this into a holy war of vim vs emacs I don't mind either I just want to try out emacs cause I think it looks awesome and something I'd be interested in.1 -
I'm writing this in response to the article shared by @Christine
God!!! And I wanted to start learning web development. Should I even start with HTML? I mean.. ugh!
Any SANE web developer here who could share their usual tools for building a website.
And if you would use entire different tool sets for different sites, which ones would you use for which kinds of sites?
(Is this question too much?)7 -
So the question is:
is there any better alternative to material ui?
mui is powerful, but I see no good in it in the field of customization.
You can't do shit without searching smth like: "how to remove the ::before in that mui component"
and getting some answer like:
"oh you can't do that with css! you should use that prop and shit or you should config your library in a way which you can remove ::before"
FFS WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS
I JUST WANT TO WRITE MY BORING CSS AGAIN10 -
Quickie... :D
I'm competent at back end (in Java) but need to whip up a Web front end. Aim is a simple but beautiful UI for admin settings and basic stuff like that, but might extend to some visuals for graphs etc.
Back end already exposes a RESTful API (JAX-RS).
Question is, should I be looking into serverlets and Javascript? I've used Bootstrap a little (and will probably use this)?
Given that there appears to be about a million front end frameworks, where would you suggest I head given the use case above?7 -
Can anyone share their thoughts/opinion about jQuery?
I'm already using jQuery but I always have a doubt in my mind that using this library cause to lessen the performance or slow our webapps.
And also I was planning to use native Javascript rather than jQuery can also anyone share their thoughts/opinion what are the things I should consider when using native Javascript?10 -
So I started learning html, css and javascript this year... After getting stuck in understanding a few concepts I started learning a little of sql and Java...
Now after a few begginer tutorials I have no idea where to go or what to dedicate my studies...
Most companies around my city use Java, but I'm already 29 years old and I feel like this will be a problem... Should I focus on learning frameworks and try big companies internships, or go for web development and start working on my own?5 -
Just wondering weather i should be preparing for a college supplementary exam that is to happen in may/june (that i have already failed twice and i hate that subject ) or should use this free time to learn new courses/tech that I always wanted to learn3

There was a rant about an online hoster "comparable to Google", "for free" and "with moral" this morning.
After I asked how it makes money and pays the services one gets for free, the rant got deleted.
I should have kept the name of the hoster in mind, to know which one I will never use, obviously. This is too suspicious.8 -
Alright, I need your help! (Im going to so fucking regret this...) My external backup HDD is corrupt, the EaseUS Trial (piece of fucking garbage tool) can detect all the data, but im not going to pay 50-80 bucks for this (fucking piece of shit) tool...

My project has just ended. And I feel a bit too settled in my current company, as my employment here is approaching a 10yr line.
An ex-colleague is tempting me with freelance/contractor devops/dev/all purpose handyman adventure.
I'm a bit concerned, but equally tempted.
What should I consider? What would be the reasons you'd use to reject this adventure?
Is contractor role paid better or worse? Or the same?5 -

Another newbie question
Is ruby on rails worth learning now and is it dead ? I am a bit of a newbie to backend. I did create a site for a friend a year or two ago with django but still it was pretty simple. My horrible code is available here :- https://github.com/akshaytolwani123...
Also is this course on coursera for free on audit decent for the basics https://coursera.org/learn/... or should I just use freecodecamp or similar.5 -
I want to manipulate CSV files with Python and I was using NumPy, what I want to do is 3 columns, with an undetermined number of rows, and I want to be able to remove, add and edit every value, this is my questions:

FUCKING SHIT, I HATE THIS
Does anyone have problems with axios?
I've been trying to make this work for at least 1 hour. If I use Postman, it works alright, but using axios messes it up.
Practically what happens it's that Django does not picks the foreign keys, it loads all the fields except those two.
I've been like fucking crazy trying to understand what's going on but to no avail... I want to die, it's friday and this stupid thing is delaying me more than it should3 -

Hot take: Rust doesn't go far enough with explicit clone; dropping any type that isn't trivially copiable should also be explicit. I don't mean that it should be leaked if you don't delete it, I mean that the compiler should force you to explicitly say
"I am done with this object, anything that had to know about it has already been notified and either there isn't a single last point of use or it isn't a clone, therefore dropping is justified."
This is the whole meaning of dropping a complex object. I think that this is far too strong a statement to imply in bulk for every value in scope at the end of the function.4 -
I know this is very high level but just looking for some ideas/guidance.
If you were using a front end that acted as a portal to 1st and 3rd party applications that should be "plug & play" hosted in the cloud, which technologies would you use, and why?1 -
SAFARI! What the hell do Apple think they are doing? This has to be the worst browser available, or I should say not available! Problem: It won't load pages; it continually freezes; it just doesn't work. And, there is no use clearing out history, resetting, etc. Apple's folly still just does not work. Every update takes it a further step backwards. If this is the best technology on offer, then it does not bode well for the future.

A lot of our web forms are done with AngularJS and combined with jQuery it does everything I need to satify the needs of people who are most impressed CSS transitions and have no technical knowledge whatsoever. I have no peers to ask this question.
I'm the only person deciding on what JS libs to use at the company... and since AngularJS goes into maintenance mode... what would you guys suggest to handle form input and add/remove CSS classes to HTML elements?
Should I get on the VUE bandwagon this year?13 -
I'm fascinated about story games like: Sentece, Who's the killer, I'm innocent etc.
I have a question, how can I build a game like this? How is this game created?
I'm an android developer and I work in Android Studio, is there any solutions to build this kind of games in Android Studio.
If is this possible, how?
If is not what should I use, unity or?5 -
Looking for a recommendation on what I should use to code on my phone.
I own an iPhone and usually spend a lot of time on public transit. I thought that it would be better to spend that time coding or learning something new. I am semi experienced in programming and this would help me get better as well.
Any recommendations on any app (possibly free) that I could download to kinda allow me to code and learn at the same time?5 -
How would you create a mock for an Aggregator Microservice (stateless) which makes requests to other services for each request, transforms the data and then responds to the user?
I want to create a mock service where I don't t have to run the other services but it should create kinda realistic responses.
Have you had to create something like this?
I'd use it for testing another microservice that uses the aggregator.2 -
Hello, I am doing master in Pharmacy, but I like programming and consider to switch or connect somehow industries. I could write simple scripts and small programmes in Python, but I want to write code with good practice from beginning.
So my question what should I know and put in use, maybe some resources if someone has them or just terms for further search. At this moment I use gitlab for VCS (my commits sucks and my whole usage of Git sucks, but at least I use branches), I am trying to separate control from model (MVC but I guess I do it poorly), also I use keepchangelog rules for changeling, and semantic versioning for versions, PEP8 and Pokemon names for my variables and functions as it helps read code later.7 -
Can anyone recommend any good code/screen sharing tools?
My use case is that I have a Windows work laptop with a garbage keyboard and I want to share my editor with my personal MacBook without having to clone the repo there or actually share any files.
I tried Live Share on VS Code but the shared terminal barely ever works, and you can't stage files from the editor GUI. I imagine something like TeamViewer would be very slow for this?
I'm not sure if there's any tool that covers this use case or if I should just stick with Live Share and try to workaround its issues. :/9 -

I want to automate some tasks in my PC. But usually when I try to automate something, I have to show the bot exactly step by step, how to do it. Like click on something that looks like this then write something here and so on.
But I want to make a bot, that will learn from my usage replicate the behavior, even if any step gets missed in the middle.
So my question is: to achieve this, which programming language and framework/library should I use?
Thanks13 -

Having a dilemma... I need help with my gaming projects. I know a guy who I could train since he has lots of potential but Im having trust issues. Its because I invested around 10k into my codebase and Im afraid to give access to that guy since I suspect that he might use files and some day run away to make his own project. So im back to square 1 again which is loosing my mind with this huge workload. What should I do? Should I just say fuck it ant make him sign some air tight NDA agreement? Even then he could stand up and leave 2 months in and open a competitor project if he doesnt like my management style...3

I'm working on some custom software for work, and I've been keeping a changelog. I use three main headers: Added, Fixed, and Changed. Under what header should 'general stability improvements' go? These stability improvements are too vague and broad to specifically mention what changed (because nothing changed, just some source code was re-arranged/re-worded) What category would you put this?
Edit: This changelog is for the `non-tech` employees5 -
FUCK ANDROID SETTINGS. I wanted to find a single setting to change my default write disk. A SINGLE SETTING. last month i got a project signed to build an app to do few idiotic things, the whole point of it was for my client to earn money using google reward video (imagine). well i've worked on a lot of projects and this one seemed to be too simple. after checking Ionic website i saw lots of plugins among them where admobs-free and admobs-plus and even a paid version so i checked them out and it seemed to be pretty awesome, well. after a month i can only tell you this: DO NOT EVER USE IONIC. NEVER. you should constantly remove platforms and add it again and even so it gets messed up quickly. right now i just regret that i started this project with ionic and i cannot tell you how many bugs i ran into. JUST DON'T USE IT!

Whenever I try to copy any text from any webpage & create a list, there are a lot of things to do. Switching multiple windows, ctrl+c, ctrl+v, then again do the same for the next selected text.
Is there any Chrome extension out there to solve this exact problem? Less action to copy-paste texts?
Or should I make one? How many of you are likely to use something like this? -
How would I use \n in Python as a string?
Use Examples:
If you are making a string calculator, and using \n to separate the numbers/text from each other and put them individually into a list, which the conclusion for example:
24\n10\nhi
This should get a list like this:
[ '24', '10', 'hi']
What is the solution?
We can simply use one of the following solutions:
r"\n"
OR
"\\n"

I'm troubled by the stuff I made back when I did not know how I should use Unity's Animator. I have these animators that open and close a dialog with transition effects, but I used Triggers to accomplish it. With Triggers, no matter how I construct it, it seems that there is always this weird edge case that can only happen if Triggers are spammed.
Why I did not use Bools for open/close state is beyond me. And I have tons of those Animators to fix. FML. -

Is there a way to force VLC to stream a second monitor when there isn't one?
So trick the PC into thinking there is a second monitor and then have VLC stream that one?
Then watch the stream on another device.

Hi, in my JS project I have to update a variable value that is getting a text input's value in order to use it dynamically with different functions across my program. What would be the best approach to doing this?
Should I make a function that updates the variable for every character typed or should I simply get the value when the function is called?
Thanks!2 -
I may have inadvertently gotten my old university's Comp Sci System Services addicted to CTF wargames. oops.
I also just found out that you can prevent a more command from automatically exiting on completion only by limiting the size of the window of your terminal. I lost a good 4 hours of trying literally every ssh command combination I could, when all I had to do was use a small terminal screen. Whoever designed this last challenge should be given an award and then shot.3 -
When is it a good idea to use linked lists?
In my pet project, I want to have a list of items with an index. The index of an item should be updateable, and the index of the other items should adjust.
A linked list would make it very easy to adjust the order since you just need to update the "next" node of 2 items, but I think this would make getting the index of items more troublesome.
What is the preferred way to do something like this, am I just overthinking it, and would updating all the indices of the items not be such a big job?
The project uses React and mongo (express-mongoose) btw, if that's important.4
