devRant just hit 50,000 downloads on Android (fancy new store badge, yay!). Thank you everyone for being part of this community and spreading the good word! @dfox and I have some fun new features in the works, exciting times!23
So i was playing around with terminal apps in node.js a few weeks ago and made a CLI version of devrant. Images get converted to ascii just for fun. This is about was far as it goes for me though - anyone want to take it over? (The code is shit - this was a midnight proof of concept). Currently there's pretty much just the rant listings, the login works too but I think @dfox would need to approve it's use.
Next script I'm writing is going to be a terminal rant posting tool so I can rant from my server 😉
$ rant -m "fml" -f ~/screenshot.jpg -t "lol"20
Large corporation. CEO tells everyone to attend this mandatory meeting via the internet.
I work remotely. I can't log in, meeting is full. But our colleagues have made a parallel meeting just for us in the meantime, where I could hear them make fun of the meeting, which is basically the CEO showing some Powerpoint slides to a room with 10 people. Nobody can either see the slides (bad camera or connection) or hear the CEO (crap microphone). 1000+ people watching this "mandatory" meeting that lasted for an hour. Nobody had any idea what it was about in the end. Just slides and muffled voices.
IF YOU WRITE IN A FORUM ABOUT A PROBLEM AND YOU SOLVED THE PROBLEM, TELL US THE FUCKING SOLUTION YOU MORRON! YOU TOOK THE EFFORT TO JUST WRITE "I SOLVED THE PROBLEM" WITHOUT WRITING A WORD ON HOW THE FUCK YOU DID IT. DO YOU THINK I READ THIS FUCKING TOPIC FOR FUN? I AM ONLY INTERESTED IN THE SOLUTION, I DON'T GIVE A SHIT IF YOU SOLVED IT OR NOT!!!12
I just started playing around with machine learning in Python today. It's so fucking amazing, man!
All the concepts that come up when you search for tutorials on YouTube (you know, neural networks, SVM, Linear/Logic regression and all that fun stuff) seem overwhelming at first. I must admit, it took me more than 5 hours just to get everything set up the way it should be but, the end result was so satisfying when it finally worked (after ~100 errors).
If any of you guys want to start, I suggest visiting these YouTube channels:
Just built a custom retropi for the boyfriend for his bday. Custom paint, button, box, splash screen, and games. Fun little project.18
Interviewer: "Show me a cool side-project you have been working on!"
Me: "No! I do not have a cool side-project to show you! I work to pay the bills, and do other things in my spare time! Like go fishing, or play video games. Why the fuck are you assuming that I spend my weekends coding for fun!? Do you call random people asking them questions every Saturday and Sunday just for the LOLs of it?"38
You: I am working on an Instagram clone just for fun. Want to take a look?
Friend: Sure. Where are all the filters?
You: They are a work in progress.
Friend: Instagram is better.9
devRant terminal client.
Currently it can display rants, comments and images and avatars are
converted to ascii images just for fun.15
Just started to dive in to C. Lots of fun. This is my first creation. I'll have some friends to test it for me... >:)13
You know your week starts great, when you receive a call, that the whole shop database of a company is not working anymore.
Turns out MS Fucking SQL decided to drop all tables, just because the harddisk was full.
A SERIOUS FUCK YOU TO MICROSCHROTT!
It's not a lot of fun, when 15 people have to wait for you about 1 hour, until it is restored.
Why does this have to happen on a monday?11
Spend half the day setting up a dedicated server at work (including getting all the hardware together) and installing CentOS and tweaking around.
For a client? Oh no, there just literally wasn't anything else to do and I didn't want to sit around doing nothing or working on shell scripts AGAIN. (working in support (+ linux server management) and due to the holidays hardly any support requests come in)
*Hmmm, lets install nginx for fun*
"yum install ngi..."
*wait, let's compile from source and make it more fun!*
So yeah, that was my day, I guess.5
I have just modded my router and added working USB2.0 to it.
I told about it to my classmates and they told me "You dont have a life"
My response "Maybe not but i have router with USB2.0 soldered to CPU"
And then told them that its maybe not life for them since im not drinking alcohol every friday but that this is just pure fun for me to do this with Tech.13
A young man was walking along in the forest, when he heard a muffled voice crying for help from behind a log. He leaned over to see a frog sitting in the mud.
The frog looked up at him and said, "I'm actually a beautiful princess, and if you kiss me, I'll transform back into my true self, and be yours for eternity."
Silently, the man scooped up the frog and continued on his walk.
A minute or two later, the frog piped up again, "Hey, buddy, maybe you didn't hear me -- I said, if you kiss me, I'll turn into a princess. What are you waiting for?"
Annoyed, the man stuffed the frog into his coat pocket.
Shocked, the frog yelled from inside the man's pocket, "What the hell? I'm a princess! All you have to do is kiss me!"
Opening his pocket and peering in, the man said, "Listen -- I'm a software engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend. But a talking frog is kind of cool."3
1. Started to program Python 3
2. Thought of doing a little program just for fun
3. Now 1 1/2 years in developing state with nearly 3000 lines of code and 11 modules
4. Python skills :)14
I asked: What are you looking for in a developer?
They: Just that he is a fun guy. We'll take your word on your technical capabilities.
Needless to say, I didn't get the job.7
Friend: Hey can you check my code, can't seen to find this one error, and i have been trying for hours now.
Me: Just one error?
Friend: Ya, just one. And it i am not in a hurry, check it whenever you can.
Me: *understanding the pain of not finding that one fucking error*
Cool, just send me the code i ll check it tonight.
Later that night i check the code, debugg that error, shit ton of more error pop up.
Me: Well i have solved the one error, now i can just hand over the rest of the code to the guy so he can take care of the rest, its not like i am responsible or aything. HOWEVER, maybe i can solve few more, just for fun, i can't just let this code get the better of me.
*ends up clearing all the error after a lomg night*4
(I know Linux is not included)
Which one do you like most?
(and yes, it's far from perfect, just a little CSS sketch for the fun)25
I am a student who is just starting out in cs and web design. I don't really like web design that much and don't see a future for myself but I run a small website for fun.
Whenever and I mean ｗｈｅｎｅｖｅｒ I show my roommate or friends a side project hosted on the site I get a 8 minute long speech about how an aspect of my design is flawed, how my color scheme is trash, and how I should do X thing instead. Whenever I argue and say that I like my design I'm met with "I'm the end user and the user is always right"10
Just applied for this job and I had to share it here, really cool and fun concept :)
Years ago, when i was a teenager (13,14 or smth) and internet at home was a very uncommon thing, there was that places where ppl can play lan games, have a beer (or coke) and have fun (spacenet internet cafe). It was like 1€ per hour to get a pc. Os was win98, if you just cancel the boot progress (reset button) to get an error boot menu, and then into the dos mode "edit c:/windows/win.ini" and remove theyr client startup setting from there, than u could use the pc for free. How much hours we spend there...
The more fun thing where the open network config, without the client running i could access all computers c drives (they was just shared i think so admin have it easy) was fun to locate the counter strike 1.6 control settings of other players. And bind the w key to "kill"... Round begins and you hear alot ppl raging. I could even acess the server settings of unreal tournament and fck up the gravity and such things. Good old time, the only game i played fair was broodwar and d3 lod5
Can we, please, put some substance into our rants? Over the course of the last weeks the amount of rants of the type "%NAME% %SWEARWORDS%" has increased tremendously. You want tell everyone that (for example) Windows can go fuck itself? Great. But why? What is the story behind you're enragement?
Please make this place more fun to browse by sharing stories. Not just a random amount of names and swearwords.4
People say programmers are no fun!! But they don't know the truth.
We have big Ass container of emotions almost ready to explode anytime. We are spending too much time in debugging stuff one after another that having a free time is just a hoax to us, even when we came back home for sleep, it's only to dream about solution. We would be happy with debugging the error that is not letting us sleep for weeks.6
Get children! You'll have so little time over for your fun projects that you force yourself to stop procrastinating and start accomplishing truly amazing things in just 5 minutes here and 20 minutes there.7
For the hell of it, I decided to see what would happen if I did the infamous sudo rm -rf /*
This laptop had Kali on it from a while ago, and I wanted to throw Arch on just for fun experimentation purposes.
It was pretty interesting, watching everything disappear, and then it froze, at which point I restarted it and was greeted with this.
Bored science has concluded, time to do more bored science.5
Bad dev practices:
1. Forgetting to version control some fun project i am doing for a long time and then commit everything at once. And forget about it again..
2. I probably have too much love for abstraction. So i abstract stuff just for the fuck of it to the point my friends dont even understand what the program is for.
3. I have no patience and due to that i lose motivation when i think of some idea that is big.
4. I cant keep my ideas small enough, and i dream too big until problem3 kicks in, and then i drop the entire idea.6
Today I'm going to work on my side project that I haven't touched in weeks.
I want to utilize Angular 2 which means I'll need to learn TypeScript. I also want to use the new .Net Core and EF Core 1.0. Oh and I want to handle authentication using JWT!
Wow, that's gonna be a lot of effort to get things off the ground... maybe instead I'll use this time to learn some new concepts. Maybe watch this episode of Fun Fun Function, or maybe this video on writing Assembly code for an app on Raspberry Pi, that sounds cool!
Actually, you know I should really teach myself dependency injection and unit testing for once. I'm so behind the times.
Well, really I should finish this book on design patterns first. Ok, where did I leave off? Page 20 I think... ehh... maybe I'll just work on my side project.
Tomorrow... tomorrow, I'll work on my side project.9
Don't get me wrong, I hate using Java for real life projects. But there is a reason why almost every university use it as introduciton language. It's great start to learn programming. Saying that the 'Hello World' in Java is complex and can scare people away, it's complete nonsens. For fuck sake, yes programming should be fun, but it is also hard. People can understand that they are going to learn what 'public static voiď means later. It's the structure of many Computer Science classes. It's the assigments that are not designed in engaging and fun way for newcomers. That's the problem, not the language.21
Shopping for computers is so fun and relaxing than shopping for makeup.
So here's the scenario...
I walked into a makeup store and I was looking for lipstick. I was wearing my devRant shirt, jeans, and a laptop backpack. A sales lady approached me and just stared. She didn't even ask what I was looking for. The way she looked at me made me feel that I don't belong there. She should've just left me alone than giving a judgemental look. I got intimidated so I looked at her and gave the biggest smile, then fleed. I panicked. I salute those female developers who doesn't have problems shopping for girly stuff!
For the record, my sister encouraged me to wear a little makeup so that I don't look stressed. That made me decide to go to that makeup store. I'd rather order online now.
It's so hard to not be girly by nature.17
I created a random website a month ago (a project which took me about 2-3 weeks)... made for developers.
But unfortunately I didn't find anyone interested, just a few users that used it once (ok, I spent nothing for marketing and posted it only on my Twitter and on Product Hunt).
Anyway this is it: https://reviewti.me/
I spent about $4 for the domain, maybe someone will find it useful and it wasn't a waste of time and "money". 😅
Please don't see this as spam, I earn nothing (free website, 0 ads), I created it just for fun and maybe to be a little useful for app developers.
If it isn't for you, just tell me what do you think about it (if you want).
Our professor once asked us to 'mess up' the functionality of a PHP script with one shell command for fun. People tried different things like occupying the port, messing with access rights etc.
My friend just wrote a 'sed' command to replace all the underscores with an empty space...😂
It goes without saying that he stole the show.2
Here's a silly side project I've been working on just for fun:
It "programmatically" creates sound from code (or plain text) on GitHub. I wouldn't call it music, because it sounds kind of horrible almost all of the time :D It's very simple: The length of a line defines the note to be played. Really just a nerdy bit of fun.
Unfortunately I have absolutely zero knowledge in music theory and I have no idea how to make the resulting sounds more pleasant or even melodic. If you're interested in making this better or helping out with feedback, you can find the project at https://github.com/dneustadt/...
Also feel free to share if you find anything on GitHub that makes for some decent sounds :D (I doubt it)14
Was just reminded of this by another rant: http://www.codewars.com
Fun for practicing code challenges. Also noticed you can give yourself a 'clan', so if anyone wants to sign up put 'devRant' as your clan and we can get a bunch of devRanters together 👍☺9
Made a bunch of bad decisions.
This one is the absolute worst.
Studying biology as a main subject intstead of computer science in high school.
Indian people in here would know, studying PCMB is no less than being a dare devil. 🤣
Why did I do that ?
I didn't want to get into medicine.
I just wanted to study it for fun.
And thought, I'll be able to study all of computer science in college 😶.
Its totally useless now.
How much of biology do I remember now ?
Studying CS would have been much more beneficial for me.13
Sitting down for an entire weekend with a couple of friends, just to work on a side project.
No deadline, just fun. And beer, lots of beer 😅6
Holy shit I never realised how frustrating it is to code for a client the way they want it... I mean I just want to go back to coding for fun4
It is time for me to run an experiment with the people of devRant. There are just a few simple rules for this experiment.
1. Do not change the username
2. Do not change the password
2.5. Do not delete the account
3. Respect others
4. Don't get banned
5. I am watching
So.. Time for the experiment.
Functional Programming literally has 'fun' in the title; OOP is one letter away from 💩. I rest my case.4
"Eww that is not Dev-related!"
Shut the fuck up. For me, devRant is a social media for developers and not a social media about only dev-related shit.
"devRant is a fun community for developers to share and bond over their successes and frustrations with code, tech, and life as a programmer!"
"about code, tech and *life*"
For fucks sake... Stop crying around and just dislike it if you don't want it.7
So the teacher made fun of me today stating that knowing what USB stands for is pointless :/ I thought it was just basic knowledge for a geek like me. This statement of my teacher really infuriates me!!!12
I tried to build an application in a container, but the build failed with 54 warnings and 86 errors.
My coworker watched the build fail from behind me, and jokingly said "Well... have fun going through all that".
I told him to wait just a second.
I switched out the image for the build step with a slightly altered one.
Build fails with one error.
Coworker just stares at the screen with his mouth open.
I'm starting to appreciate Docker now.3
!Dev. Just back from the supermarket. Seriously there should be a special place in hell for people who leave their trolley at right angles to the aisle. The place was full of them today. Still it was fun ramming their trolleys out of the way, preferably sending them scooting away down the aisle.55
Sitting at home debugging code for the fun of it when... "I would debug 500 bugs, and I would debug 500 more. Just to be the man who debugged a thousand bugs to fall asleep on the floor."1
Made image file format just for fun, called .spf
Here spf reader:
And here spf renderer chrome extension:
It seperate image to strips with the same color.7
Well, it finally happened.
After 25 years coding in all types of languages and environments, I’m no longer having fun.
It now seems like it’s a fight to get interested in the code. I used to be something that I would spend hours / days doing. Now I just want to walk away from the code.
Is it true (do you think) that after a while all you see is a for loop, an if statement, a null check and you just think to yourself. Fuck this! Because I think I’m there.
God it’s depressing to think that I no longer find it fun.4
Hahaha guys I got the HTTP response codes tattooed on my arm so I don't forget them! Aren't I fun and quirky? I'm such a code nerd, oh thanks for the likes, Twitter! Wowowowow i am just SO FUN. Look at my nerdy tattoo!!10
I pranked my friends ex, nothing bad, just fun. First i screen shorted is desktop, flipped it and made it his new desktop. Then flipped the resolution, so my upsideiwn bf was cool. Lastly I change his mouse behavior, I set it for reversed.
Fun right? A typical person might get a lil pussy and have to fix it. Some might even fix it themselves. Regardless have a lil chuckle.
He smashes the monitor and keyboard, left them, both in a pile.5
Game dev update: I'm procrastinating the project cuz I need help with stupid background and it doesnt mix well so Im just contemplating existence
But I did this for fun8
Interviewed a guy for a senior technical job. I worked hard on making my own questions that hopefully make the interviewee think instead of useless gotchas.
He told me at the end that they were fun questions and this interview was loads better than the rest who just ask questions off of Google.
Having had my share of shitty interviews, this makes me feel so good 😊11
Once upon a time I sent my CV to a handful of companies. Just for fun I mailed them my physical CV copies + personal statement/motivational letter (3 pages total).
Right at the end of the horribly formatted 12pt Comic Sans pages it read:
"Turn pages to read the Helvetica version".
Never actually wanted those jobs anyway...2
When I was 14 or so, we had acces to some computers during break. I went through each and every one of them, rebooted into Safe Mode (yeah, Windows), logged in as admin with no password, and gave admin powers to my account (each student had one, at least). Then, installed a keylogger and one of those "trojaans" that let me remote terminal, keyboard and mouse control to all the PCs (I had tried telnet server, but this was soo much easier).
Then came the fun.
"Why does the start menu keep opening by itself?"
"Why is the CD tray opening and closing on its own?"
Then I found out social media passwords like (translated from spanish) "bigdicks". Never used them, because I considered myself one of the gray hatted. I did it just for the fun.2
Wouldn't it be cool if there's a set of these? Any professional designers here (cuz I'm just a hobbyist)? Or any thoughts? What should your favorite language look like?9
hmm i think is when my game start to blink like a party lights and just for fun i added sound it was cool but then i found The bug and solve it but it was fun
Time to go to bed.
Why not trying this lib ? it's not that late, let's give it a try for an hour and then --> sleep.
Woaw what, two hours passed already ? I was just still beginning to have fun ! so frustrating. Na, I could not sleep if I'm frustrated, let's dig deeper for 30min and then, go !
shit it's been an hour already, man, go to sleep now ! ...Actually it's too late already, better not sleeping and keep digging !
In the morning : can't wake up, tonight I promise, I go sleep at nine.
In the evening : oh new angular ! could worth a quick try before sleep !1
After serveral weeks of stress, bug hunting, despair and fun - I JUST COMPLETED A PROJECT MILESTONE !!
Time for a reward :]3
I came to visit my mum for Christmas, and my days are all about changing ringtones and showing her how to change volume on her phone. The worst is that she doesn't even try, it's just easier to ask me. Fun times.2
I wish there were some sort of nerd club in my city were IT ppl gathered and build a datacenter just for fun13
So there is this programming competition i regularly enter. I dont give a shit about the competition part, its just fun to make something in a limited time. This year, i was kinda hyped that i threw together a modern stack, with Java Spark and VueJS, that would be really cool to use.
Today we got the requirements.
Php and jquery.
Well fuck me for living in 2017 apparently.1
My boss has gone for a long vacation from last week and will be back in Feb. And office feels soooo awesome and fun. No office politics, no senseless meetings. Just pure work in peace.
I wish he doesn't come back only....3
✨ Gave my portfolio a fresh minimal look and feel. Integrated Spotify to show my currently playing track, just a fun little tweak.
Leave any review for future improvement :)20
Been working for a while with some terrible code with no documentation that I just inherited from a previous employee
Topic: multi-threaded program in Python
Goal: kill both parent and children with keyboard interrupt
Intuitive idea: check in children processes if parent still alive
- parent creates socket connection
- keyboard interrupt kills parent and thus the socket connection as well
- children receive some specific socket error from the loss of connection
- children catch the exception and are killed
In Python 2, of course
I, too, like to inflict pain on myself for fun7
Just got AWS free subscription, had fun for 30 mins. Now I don't know what to do with it. Can someone give me idea for something to do with it.17
Legit got excited because today...on friday...one of our servers went down.
Tell me, do you know how fun it is to call your admin if he was "able to get it up" just for him to reply that he is having some "performance issues"?
Lmao it's fucking hilarious.
On another nothe, plz halp5
The more I learn about advanced C++ the more I love this language. C++'s template system is so insanely cool!
Just made a proof of concept expression templates based linear algebra library for my own projects. It was actually a lot of fun to make, and seeing it spit out optimized, loop-fused code with no temporary variables...magic.
Long live C++.7
Must fun was definitely when I programmed the automated installing tool to make my life easier at my old work.
Imagine having to install about 30+ PC's in an period of 2 days and that repeating at least 1-2 times a week...Having standard programms to install like acrobat pro and more...
Just deployed needed software on the net. wrote a ghost installer programm and let him deploy the software for me. No continue smashing anymore. God bless that idea I had.7
Hi, this is my first post here.
I am a poet, musician & software developer, who is entirely in love with art. This a just a place to rant right? I'll do just that!
I code for fun, write poetry to keep my sanity, and I make music, well ... for fun.16
As a guy who really just started his web development life I just say the most fun I have is clicking the refresh button ( or npm does it for me ) and seeing my magic work, unless it doesn't and then I press again , maybe this time it will ..2
Oh what fun, nothing like an open windows XP machine in a hotel. So many fun things to do with it, sadly I feel if I browse the web for 5 minutes it will litteraly burst into flames and blue screen. I might just set chrome's startup page to www.crashchrome.com9
Anyone else really struggle with motivation?
Time was back when I was a fresh dev that I couldn’t stop coding, it’s all I ever wanted to do.
I think doing it for a job has sucked the fun out of it, and unless I’m getting paid (and even then), I find actually getting down to it is really difficult.
I’ll start looking into making something, perhaps get as far as opening the IDE and then just nope’ing and bingeing YouTube / gaming / Netflix instead.6
Just finished recovering all deleted files from my old hard disks I found in the attic, just for fun.
I was hoping to find some old photos or something. Instead I found my awful old Qt code.
Back when I started the recovery it was sunny and perfectly clear outside. As soon as I found the code the skies went dark and now it’s raining like hell and lightnings are blasting.
Wtf i just summoned2
Just rememberes a collegue i had for a short period, i was remote and he was on location randomly added, I was told he was a php developer.
What he did was delete ALL the whitespace in the php code and called it optimising, he told the director it’ll make the code run faster. You can imagine how fun that was...2
You guys choose your specialities? I just find myself falling into them, and occasionally being interested in them. If the two line up, bingo.
Occasionally I get a reputation for being good at something I can't stand to work with though, which is never a particularly fun combination.4
!rant (kind of)
I have the bad habit of suggesting "awesome" and "cool" features for projects and stuffs.. (Mostly just for fun and won't give a lot of value to the project, but would be cool). The less fun side.. I'm the only developer (in most cases..)
Me: Hey, wouldn't it be cool if the user could do this or that, or if this was implemented etc.. ?
Boss/Leader: Oh, hehe yeah, hmm.. *thinking* [a bit later] .. You're right, go ahead, implement that feature..
Me: .. Damnit..
But hey, on the bright side.. It's an extra feature! :D4
Its possible that this or the next build of Lineage15.1 will finally boot on my Nypon.
If it doesnt then at least most of the shit is fixed and what comes next will be pretty quick i hope.
If it does then im gonna have looooot of fun on XDA and Telegram with people. Because they have no clue im almost done with 8.1 Ohhhhh yes im terrible person for not telling them but i dont want to get their hopes high if i fail somehow.
Im gonna be like */Takes picture of the tasty oreo coockie/* They are gonna tell me thats nice and wont beleive me. Then im just gonna post a link and tell them to test it without telling them what it is and renaming it to 13.0 just for fun. Then they boot it and find out that its oreo. MUHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA. Its kind of nice.2
Just browsing job postings for fun, see a junior developer posting I thought I would read.
Previous experience as a Web Developer (18 months +)
Who would this role suit:
Graduate Web Developer
Yeah fuck off...3
I just ported kali nethunter for my device.
Im so happy and exited to try it out fully.
Now i have full kali on phone ohhh that weill be a lot of fun.2
Last year I changed jobs from a large multi-national to a small local agency (which happens to be run by friends of mine).
One of the reasons for doing this was that my work involved more office politics than *actual* software development, and had just plain stopped being fun.
Now, I am having fun again! An example?
For one of our clients we have to connect to (a lot) of third-party APIs. Often even SOAP APIs!
Now I hear you protest "But that is no fun at all! SOAP APIS SUCK!" Which is true, more often than not. 😔
BUT! My friend started an internal API-SNAFU Trello board. Every time you get bitten in the ass by some ill conceived fuck-up of an API, you get to add your complaint to the board.
Beside giving as something to reciprocally rant about, the board also serves a serious function: depending on the amount of fuck-ups an API has been known to make, the price for working with that API will go up.
Who said it doesn't pay to complain? 😀1
We have 'informatica' (translates to 'computer science') on school. Tuesday we received an assignment to create a 'web-app' with JQuery mobile to show all of the US presidents.
Nearly nobody in my class has experience with PHP, so this is gonna be fun for them. All they have to learn from is a website from 2013, they are tought to just throw variables inside the query's.. Yay for SQL injection! 🎉
It actually contains a lot of out of date information, for example it says that jsp is competition for PHP, and that 'most sites with PHP have a PHP Powered logo'2
Just for fun and for experiencing the good old days before fancy text editors, I edited some CSS in notepad😂👌🏻1
Me: lets make some fun thingie
Me: i need a random word api for this
Me: ok ill just make one
Me, 3 hours later: i never actually made my original idea6
Warning: I code just for fun.
Today I finished a website and I asked to my friends to tell me what they think about it saying that it wasn't yet properly responsive and that could be some error, so I asked if they could use the computer to view it and all of them sent to me screenshots of the website on mobile.
I hate them.
P.S. Sorry for my english...8
Linus Torvalds, while writing about the future of Linux in his autobiography 'Just For Fun', said Linux will be used in cell phones in near future. He wrote this in 2000. After 16 years, we see Android (based on Linux Kernel) in over a billion cell phones! What a visionary! Makes me wonder!1
So I took my old C# project "RotatingCube" for a spin and transformed the unreadable and inefficient mess into a different program, featuring better readability and more comments, with multiple cubes at once, without the shitty flickering.
I did that for school but it was quite fun to tinker with only outputting the differences to a previous output.
Check it out at https://github.com/filthycoding/...!
Next I just need multithreading for performance reasons.
Devs, post your device's homescreen screenshot here.
Starting with mine.
Device name : One plus 3T26
I have an idea to make server side html. Just for fun. Or for noobs who just wants to know web development.
... something amazing
(This could also be the much needed revolution for backend)14
Now I feel bad for calling myself a programmer as a highschooler after seeing so many people shitting on the younger people. Goddammit I picked up programming because I thought it was cool and fun not because I want money or shit. I'm not the retard kiddies that overstate my ability. I like coding, I just like coding.
Now I wanna quit.7
Just bought a cheap wifi USB adapter with antenna and damn its perfect just little hot glue to make it not falling a part every so often.
Tried wifi hacking (My own wifi) works.
Packet injection Works.
Tried all the tests that airmon-ng offers and all passed.
Damn for 2 $ you can get really good wifi adapter for lot of things.
Ohhhhhhh it will be fun at school.1
Coding is like the minds virus for me. I can't stop, but I sometimes question if it's good for me. Work is ok nowadays, but keeping a balance in hobbies is so hard. When I discover something new that's fun it can eat me up for days. But that excitement can leave just as quickly with very few projects ever finished as a result.2
Not gonna lie. I’m in the mood to make a game and I’m gonna try it. I think it’ll be fun. Wish me luck!
For anyone curious I’m gonna be using Godot because it’s not bad and It’s not nearly as fat as Unreal and Unity. They’re not bad just not what I want rn.7
!rant, but some kind of story
I work as a lead dev on a gmod server of a pretty big german community. With the fun stuff, there come the duty‘s to help Jr. Devs or even help people get into Developing. The part, where you help junior devs is always fun, but what I find interesting is the part where you help people learn coding. It’s not easy work, but you learn more every “lesson”. I catch myself exploring and learning something new, even if I know the topic. For me it’s a new journey every time.
Not sure if there are many people who can relate but I just wanted to tell my side on it.1
I remember the days when I coded just for the fun in it and not for some client I don't give a shit about2
Waking up and finding your Notifs panel full is like Christmas. Slowly opening every mention and ++ you get. Then, just for fun, you read every comment on rants you've commented in. Oh and comments in your own rants are the best.
What a nice start for the day.5
Soo... I made a bytecode editor for Java just for fun. On the left you can see the original decompiled class, on the right a slightly changed class which still runs normally. Below you can see the pure ASM bytecode :)
It's pretty awesome for learning how bytecode works (together with a listing like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...)! It also has an AutoComplete feature and some syntax highlighting (which I'm still working on).
What's special about it? It's a pure text parser! It assembles a full class from just a String!
If you want to look at it: https://github.com/SuspiciousActivi...
(I'm new to GitHub, don't judge me :D)2
Either CloudFlare itself has decided to join the fun of attacking my DNS server, or somebody is just spoofing their IP in the UDP packets.
Crap, my ipset script is basically useless now, since the real source could be from anywhere :(
Any suggestions on what could I do to make this attack stop? It's not causing any real issues (at least for now), but it's still annoying as hell.
Get fucked, stupid skiddie who keeps manually changing the ip source in his script10
Since it's 42 & I am fond of the number..
The 'most fun' I had was making a completely useless feature for our customers that we (our team) knew will be useless (&wrong) once finished and we will have to rewrite it. But we had to do it nevertheless till the end of the week, since the customer is the king. It turned out hilarious and fun because everyone was making jokes on the floor about what idiotic stuff we code and implement. Even the boss was like: yes, yes, I know but please do it, you can rewrite it later to not do anything, just leave the button on gui. It was crazy it was fun, a little bit of mindless coding to lighten up the atmosphere and it (coding & jokes) brought closer the whole colective reaponsible for that particular customer.
Is it just me, or is the rants longing for stickers and balls (sounds vaguely euphemistic) becoming just a bit too common?
I love some good stickers as much as the next guy, but wouldn't it be more fun to have them for something more, well, rant-y?
But by all means, keep ranting about what you think about, I love all of it.3
I'm glad I have a job where we don't have team 'building' nonsense. We just come in and we team-build on the spot, as in, we get along.
Oh, the nightmare of my previous job where they resented employees for not joining some stupid party where they all got drunk and had forced 'fun'. I like authentic environments.5
Some thoughts about time relations in app dev:
10% - minimal ui & coding main functions
10% - testing
10% - writing web api just for fun
70% - try to "design" an ui
Am I the only one having problems with ui?? 🤔3
Between high school and college, working in a circuit board manufacturing storeroom.
Fun fact: when we are bagging small boards, we do not gently lay them in containers, they're usually thrown at least 6 feet into a bin of the same type of board after they're placed in the bag. We also don't remake a board when pins are bent, we just bend them back with tweezers. And you know that rule about not touching the gold connectors... Yeah... So much for that... Did I remember to mention that these boards are for medical equipment?
On the bright side, we at least have electrostatic discharge control going on all the time.3
I gave my project manager a prototype of the ocr app we're developing to play with, just for fun. The next morning, I enter the office to see this along with a well structure spreadsheet with some 40 columns.
Never underestimate the seriousness of a project manager.3
Project BluePly, all people are blueplying their pfps just for fun, for another Discord anniversary, so I also tried it, using my DevRant avatar....just don't ask what went wrong...9
Started to redesign my wifes website into grid-layout with SASS. It is fun and I save a lot of markup HTML.
I try to keep the green theme, but I realy suck at design... I just have no eye for colors. I rather would keep everything white and grey...3
Just realised I've been member for over 2 years now, it has been fun to see the community grow and what the platform has become!4
Made this app just for the fun of it. Let me know what you guys think about it. And do suggest places for improvement. 😃
Here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...21
I just wrote a function with a while loop AND recursion because I wasn't paying attention.
That was fun. Also, MySQL isn't happy right now. I'm posting while I'm waiting for my local service to restart.3
Well, its nearly impossible to describe what i do/study to my family and relatives. most of them think i just fix computers. Just imagine what would they think when i try to explain them that im learning ML and AI.
here, a Huge part of our economy is depends on IT Industry. But the elder generation thinks computers are a waste of time and they are useless other than for fun.4
Just solved this riddle hidden in my friend's agency homepage. www.webfactory.ie. I am not looking for a job myself, but the riddle was fun anyways (despite short).1
Who has too much time on their hands and wants a throwaway project? :)
Say there are some poll results. Like this one. Each item has xx.yy% of all the votes. The task would be to come up with an algorythm that would read in those results and make a few predictments on how many participants were in this poll :)
I don't need it, I just came up with it and thought it might be a fun project for someone. I know I'd go for it if I had free time on my hands :)
P.S. if you're up for it, sharing a solution code is more than welcome!20
I've just got in from bar* work, a little drunk*!
My last dev employer actually offered me my old job back, but as HR are so awful I said the situation was past that and demanded compensation. A nice payout agreed for me, for not taking it to tribunal 👍
Now for the new job! I thought working the night scene would be fun, but it's not well paid and the freelance I have is but it's hard to juggle the two.
I might have a break or a month or so doing this, then look for another job.
Anyone recommend good companies LGBT friendly in London?16
Fun fact for today
Do you know why we call computer bugs as computer bugs, and not just the formal word for it - "errors and glitches"
Some of you guys might already know this, but still worth sharing:
Just making my own start page for fun on vacations.
How would yours look like?
What links and categories would you add?
Lacks Google search bar, I know8
Today I went to a computer store,
I ran dir /s C:\ ( "ls -r /" equivalent for Linux, sorry GNU/Linux)
left it there
Hoping someone will panic thinking that computer has been hacked5
Wow... I haven't done complex/algorithmic level coding for maybe 6 months (yes that's how mindless my day job usually is)...
Now I just finished part of the code for a scheduling app I'm doing just for fun... Though there is also a use case at work but I don't have the free time to think about problems at this level...
Earlier this year, we built a custom gift box builder for a local popcorn company. I had decided to use vue.js for the interface which was really fun to learn.
I hadn't used any reactive frameworks like vue before this project, but I was surprised how easy it was to use, and it was so satisfying watching the frontend change just by modifying the data. I was able to easily add little transition animations when the states changed which was really fun too (something that would be really tedious otherwise).
That's was probably the most fun I've had on a project in a while.
Today my therapist suggested I work towards one day getting back the will and energy to start coding side projects, just for the fun of it.
That was a long, long time since I had the ability to do. Maybe I can get back to feeling that much in control that I can let work go for a day or two each week and just... Have fun coding. What a mind-boggling thought.2
As of late I'm creating private game servers on my local network in my free time for fun / relaxing
I've already running:
a World of Warcraft vanilla;
Travian version 3;
And I am currently working on a conquer online private server, but getting the right client for it is the hard part...4
I've been using visual studio for years and always found debugging pretty fun. At my new job I have to use xcode and FUCK DEBUGGING IN THAT ILLEIGBLE SHIT TIER DEBUGGER. and fuck objective-c, at least you can ignore the objective part and just code c..
I never thought I would say this, but damn, I miss Microsoft.10
Code = play games
Watch a tutorial = watch a movie
Read docs = read a novel
So I end up being scolded for never studying for my academics and just having fun all the time
This weekend I'm going to attempt to write an application that I'm missing right now. (It might exist already but hey, I'm in for a programming challenge)
I'll probably have a stable backend within the hour, the frontend is going to be 'fun', though 😅
And yes, I'll be using a frontend framework because otherwise I could just as well quit right fucking now.
Its been a while, this is going to be fun!20
Why does downloadmoreram.com even exist, who's paying all the hosting charges. Why would you want to host a site that continously keeps generating complaints from their more gullible visitors.
It's all fun and frolic for peeps like us, but for the other peeps, I just don't get it!2
Job huntings been kinda fun actually. All these recruiters all over the united states stroking my ego telling me im perfect for this and that.
But then I sat back today and looked at all the recruiters im working with, something like 20 of them, all the companies. How many interviews do I have? 1. 1 interview. They get you in the door and then just drop off the map.8
Just saying hello. I'm a Google Store chronic downloader and found this. I'm so happy to see so much conversation around coding. I've been learning by myself for 2 months and since then I've been desperate to have someone to talk about programming and stuff. I hope I can learn more and have fun here :)5
Back from long weekend... Already want another...
Perhaps I've finally realized the team cannot be saved, work isn't fun anymore, it sucks being the linchpin, and I'm just not having fun anymore...
And for one I think I've even take a pay cut to get onto a new but better managed and 100% senior team
Hi everyone I'm new there =)
Basically i'm just here for the stickers.
But this look like a really fun place to be as a dev, so i'm maybe going to stay a while ;)
anyway have a great day, you can resolve this bug !5
not really a rant but the more i code, the more fun it gets. i havent really dived this deep into coding and allowing myself to take most of my time doing it has made it more interesting for me. now i want to learn more and start creating personal projects aside from real university projects. people may think its weird that i have been devoting a lot of my time writing code, but i guess they just dont understand the difference of coding for grades and coding for fun.
we are all in it for fun!1
Sadly I just had to switch to android, I was in a shop and a notification popup: "Are you enjoying this shop? share some comment, picture, review...) ... the notification was from google maps, it was the latest google app to be disabled, now there is only play store. google account is used only for the play store... fun facts that most of people complains about windows 10 telemetry, but almost nobody complains about "don't be evil" google9
I dare you to spend the last 3-7 hours of 2020 NOT looking at your phone! Go masterbate... talk to yourself... read a book... drink!.. Play chess... just lay down and groan... clean the kitchen!!! ANYTHING! And maybe even the first 24 hours of 2021!!!!!
Get out of your own ass for a while! Or into your own ass - but out of your fucking phone!!It’ll be fun!5
Just curious; what kind of music do you guys listen to while coding? I tend to listen to all kinds of instrumental music, which I find great for keeping focus.
Please do share if you're sitting on a great playlist for coding, it's always fun to listen to something new!20
My team now does daily mini-standups: what you did, what you will do, what's blocking u
But with this wfh, I feel like slacking more or just seen to have less critical work to do... but not sure if the other guys are just "padding their list" or actually really busy.
So wondering when I have nothing to do for work/no defined deadlines or deliverables... How do you look busy?
I do have a lot of optional tech debt improvement work I could do but basically these are like backlog... And not really fun.6
Just switched from Debian to Ubuntu, should have coded for a project today... But I passed hours playing freeciv... At least I had fun!!
Books. I love them, I buy them, where ever I go. My favorites are the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett, but I will read any sci-fi/fantasy-styled book I come across. I would attach an image, but my phone's camera is pretty shitty, so just imagine some shelfs filled with books.
Music is imortant to me too. There will always be music playing when I'm around. I'm trying to make some myself. It's not that good but still fun. I am also a collector of vinyl records.
And then there are games of course, because sitting at a pc just for coding is not enough :D3
Release on Monday === almost 10h of code today... Though it's just an internal release, so not that serious really. Though it's be fun to have something we've been working on for half a year working decently the first time people actually get to try it... Well, well...
After having my soul suck away by "corporate", I installed VS code on my Windows 10 gaming machine.
Now, I have a pretty hardcore dev setup on my MacOS (it's unix-based and it's good, so stop the hate). I'm talking about fully automatized Rakefile that will provision it from scratch: vim, macvim, tmux, iterm configs, 15+ brew tools, 15+ brew-cask tools, themes, plugins, etc.
Installing VS Code, Node and MongoDB on Windows, just for the fun and giggles, and not having any of my hardcore tools, made me feel like... it's something silly and fun again. I'm once again that softcore developer with no stress and no constant self-reminder to improve workflow effectiveness.
Made me a little happy.
Checkout this picture, this is my Windows 10's "tmux" lol3
There is a special place in hell for people that use Boostrap, only to destroy it and recreate to destroy it and recreate for "customisation purpose"
I just spent a whole day figuring out what the fuck was going on with the collapse system that wouldn't trigger or was dying to trying to, only to discover that someone played the smartass by adding or removing a class when the collapse was triggered, so it would put everything in display:none
FUN FACT : ARIA-DISPLAY="TRUE/FALSE" HAS THIS EXACT PURPOSE, FUCKHEAD4
sometimes i wonder when i see a rant 3 weeks old with just one ++ if it's just @dfox himself or not4
This is a funny one:
So I’m in school and it’s time for midterms. Our assignment is spending 3 months building an application of our choice, what did I choose?
A social media application in Kotlin
(I’ve never used kotlin i just thought it’d be fun to learn)
I get to my first class/build review and everyone else smarter than me chose calculators, timers, dice rollers, and dnd glossaries why am I like this3
Just finished listening to devRant's new podcast. In fact, I listened twice! So good, so much info and so much fun. Special guest Andy Hunt, surprise devRant community members and more. Each segment was a blast.
Thanks @trogus and @dfox for a great inaugural podcast. Can't wait for the next episode.
I hope everyone has an opportunity to enjoy it. https://devrant.io/podcasts/...
People sometimes say "you work too much" but the truth is most of the time I'm just coding for fun. It's rare to say, but at least to me, and surely many of you guys my work is one of my hobbies. It sucks that many can't understand that.1
I find it funny that, one of the most expected features on Windows, is not even a Windows feature. The teams at Microsoft must be feeling the same way we feel when, after a huge project, the client gets super excited when we implement or change something really, really small, that we did in a couple hours, just for fun.
So the gf just came home, threw this in my face (literally, but not intentionally) and said "they were giving these away, thought you might have fun".
I've only heard of raspberry pi, arduino and such, but never actually used one.
Anyone have any experience with this thing in particular? Can I actually do anything with it or is it mostly for learning?8
Anyone here has any apps that they want to get tested for vulnerabilities and stuff?
I am training for job in it-security field but it's hard to find a starting point for testing a real app/site/whatever
So I would like to test some stuff you guys make, just for fun8
Having that teacher that just laughs at you and makes you look like an inferior piece of sh*t just cuz you ask a question in CS class..
Any question for that matter
And of course he is the head of department...
And with that: hi guys, i'm new, seems like a lot of fun here :D1
Just out of curiosity, will anyone be at VEX Worlds in Louisville, Kentucky?
For those of you who don't know, it's a robotics competition.
Currently waiting for my sponsor and rest of the team to get through TSA. (precheck is fun)3
I remember the first device I programmed on it... Ordisavant.
It used to be a classic question-answer machine (with multiplayer !), And ... Basic language!
I was so proud to make music with beeps, or a calculating machine, just for fun.
It was hard to read a program line by line, but it was so cool for me.
I was nearly 6 when my parents bought me this really great toy.
I wonder if anybody know it?2
Don't you just love thise dev days that just flay by, looked at the clock now and its just after 5pm,been coding pretty much all day.
Was reading up on progressive Web apps last night and just as a quick test made my own website one, so this morning through I would take the next step.
Few months ago I had made an events list app for android, also just for fun, but I point blank refuse to take it to ios as I see no reason to spend nearly 6 weeks salary on a Mac book because they a bunch of dicks, not to mention the $100 you need to pay each year just for them to annoy you.
Anyway, so after a quick update to my api, no thanks to Gitlab. I put together a fully offline capable pwa in react. So awesome how simply it really was, it's basically done, just needs some polish.6
Started a new job this week, picking up the front end development of a property management system, since they're old developer just left.
Oh my god was his code bad, inconsistent use of js versions e.g only sometimes using lambda for anonymous functions, variable names that were a single letter, no comments, no documentation, and over 30000 lines split into almost 30 js files, following the logic of it is as fun as a hedge maze with no exit.2
Hello and welcome come to hell for developers. Take a seat at any open computer.
You may have noticed we did away with the fire and brimstone.
Instead we just have you maintain the legacy code from your first job.
We would say have fun, but that's not really the point.2
HOD keeps coaching me in regards to my new role as a manager for my institution. I really like it, the man has a lot of knowledge and would show me stuff that not only deals with my job, but his as well. Thus far everything has been working rather smoothly, mind you, i have been acting manager for more than 6 months thus far, but they just made it official after our vp conaidered that most of the applicants for the manager role were not as qualified as I was, kinda had the advantage since I wrote the job requirements.
All in all it has been fun, stressing, but fun.
I am able to work 15 hours on my pet project then take a short walk outside and feel like a balanced man, but even just an hour on a commercial project is a massive effort even though the code is clean, the stack is modern, I'm good friends with the client and I also like the concept. The mere fact that I'm doing it for money takes the fun out of it.3
In a place that i worked we decided to made a xmas lunch/party just with TI.
So, we did a BBQ at boss house.
While we were waiting for the lunch, that "boss's favorite guy" takes a mic and start to make fun of all people in the party... ONE BY ONE, in a really tougth way.
Everyone was upset, just the boss and "that guy" were laughting. So people just started to leave.
It's a shame know people that feels good with itself when jokes with mates disabilities...3
// look at my previous rants
So keyboard is painted. But painting quality sucks (my first spray paint attempt) and looks ugly in some places. anyway. I think I'll repaint it maybe on summer, but for now I am done. I tired. Anyway, I added 5 rgb LEDs on the bottom for underglow (just for fun and exerciseing in programming) and rewired keyboard LEDs for controlling them from avr (in old XT keyboard is not allowed to control LEDs with computer). Last thing left. usb cable. And then assembly and firmware & rgb LEDs driver coding.2
Question here - what do you guys think of Kotlin?
Do you also think it'll be sufficient to learn Kotlin and not java to programm for Android?
I just began the transition, it's fun playing around with it, but a friend of mine wants to learn Kotlin to learn Android programming (and not java, he only has java basics).
What's your opinion on all this?12
This articles are what is wrong with developers. They build these stereotypes for us.
If it was funny article, just for fun I get it. Er all laugh. But this writer seems pretty serious in this.
I've been working for 3-4 years as developer. I still use Google every day. Does that make me a bad developer ? No.
Yhese are new things every day that we learn. It is yech world. It changes every day.2
Take a computer, any computer. Remove all the useful shit that makes the operating system actually work and rewrite all the prompts in simple English. Just for fun, give it the complete inability to perform everyday tasks that a child could use an Etch-a-Sketch for. Put all the useful settings/options in the background and make updates look like they're going to install up until the last minute until they error with "Unknown" as the only reason. Now interface it with your cobbled-together backend system and REQUIRE it to communicate with that system for EVERY task.
Then paint it silver.
There. Now you have a Mac.
Why the fuck does windows use 100MB for the efi partition? Like oh hey I will exactly allocate enough space for me. Oh you want ArchLinux and NixOs too? Well fuck you have fun dangouresly moving around partition just to increase the fucking size of the efi partition I just allocated at install-time without ever asking you about it.6
Pokémon go is fun, but it's not great.
Doesn't everyone think that it would be better to actually battle for your Pokemon's level?
They could perhaps keep a similar evo system (Everytime you fight you get like 1 poke candy)
This catch and release system is getting kind of annoying in my opinion.
I want to get attached to my Pokemon and actually feel like a trainer, not a garbage disposal for Pokemon.
They already have a battle mechanic, they would just need to enable ai battle algorithms and ambient encounters.
Project management 101:
1) For a new project, pretend it is similar to a project in currently in development
2) Proudly state that everything can be copied from the older project, so the schedule of the new can be tightened
3) Calculate the new schedule based on the "just copy and paste" effort.
4) Now the new project will be finished before the older project
5) Enjoy the applause from upper management for the successful project that hasn't even begun yet.
No, this does not belong in the joke category.
That's gonna be fun...1
Made a dockerfile for a reproducible build environment today. It's been a few months since I had this much fun working, so refreshing.
This counts as devops right? In that case I might take a better look at devops sometime in the near future, I think I might like it. I just did it out of necessity (didn't want to bloat my system with build tools and sdks) but I ended up liking it. For some reason devops seems exceedingly boring to me, which prevented me from looking into it until now, let's see if I can overcome my laziness and learn it.4
Just spent the whole morning making a custom loading indicator for our app (an animated version of our logo). Animations are fun!3
I just love code-golf, I only started recently, but sometimes it's nice to fuck all coding conventions, missuse lazy evaluation and abuse scope leaking.
I'm normally really tidy with formating and whitespace placement, but code-golf is also a testing field for uncommen constructs and I think it can give deeper insights into a language.
I don't like languages specifically for code-golf though, these are just stupid and no fun (at least for me).1
First patch for buildroot submitted and added applied to master!! 😁
I had the impression that git (like, more than "git add ." was just too complicated and that making patches was some sort of dark magic using some obscure unix tools.
Well, it turns out that is actually pretty easy, fun and exhilarating!!
Looking forward to build up until I'm making contributions to the kernel! 🤓
Day 5 of devWholesome...
It's almost halloween! Today is a day for relaxation and carving pumpkins. While halloween may be less exciting this year we should try and make the most of our circumstances. Dress up and have fun! Even if its just with your family dressing up is so fun. Carving pumpkins and baking are also super fun. We can all celebrate even if we can't necessarily go outside. And as always, make the most out of your day!11
Just published my first internal app, which is nice
We’ve also now started using GitLab, so I need to work out an easy way for use to transfer all of the reports from SourceSafe.
There’s only about 500+ of them, should be fun2
I need help.
I love software and hardware development but over a period of 4 years now i have lost motivation. I hardly finish anything i have started and if i finish, it's never rewarding.
I also feel like i live a very boring life. Staring at the screen all day and doing very little.
What do you guys do for fun? What activities or books do you read to keep yourselves busy or entertained?
I have been having this desire for someone to love but something makes me think that it's just a reaction to a soul that has lost purpose and only feels like loving someone will be a source of happiness. Luckily, nobody has been available for the mess i have been.
I really admire busy people. People who are passionately working on something they have chosen to do and still have fun.
I think talking to someone about how bad i feel about myself will help a little but what i really need is help on how to restore the motivation i had 4 years ago.
Can someone give me a fun project i can work on? Not for making money but something i will do, learn and feel happy about it.
I will also appreciate if someone can recommend a good book that will help me learn. Get me motivated and also hide me from this reality.
Broke up with my girlfriend due to ongoing stress to commit to the relationship, to perform at my current job, graduating early next March, looking for a full time job/studying for interviews, and going to school.
We never really planned long term and we were just in the relationship to have fun, but man do breakups suck.
I want to be able to focus on myself so I can set myself up for greatness in the future. Unfortunately that means sacrifices have to be made so I don’t lose my mind. Oof4
Any one that has any tips on how to start programming assembly programs (just for fun), aswell is there any good sources.12
Of you, you were the last I've expected such failure and misery...
Not once, not twice, but I have you a chance so many fucking times...
I won't deny it, we've been through good times, done so may things together, and I admit that I'd never be able to work without you.... this codependence is just too damn fixated...
But, I think I should part ways with you, I'll visit sometimes, not just to have fun, but mostly because of work matter.
Sorry Linux, you've failed me, I'm leaving you for Windows.5
I fucking love my SD card reader driver fucking up my whole system. How did that driver even pass BayHub's fucking QA, causing a bluescreen of death right during reboot of Windows? Anyways thanks Microsoft for that nice new bluescreen not telling me anything about the fucking problem why Windows just crashed. But at least it looks nice, so that it's more fun working all night and half a day to find the fucking problem myself. Fuck this.1
If I can’t find software I’m looking for it I don’t like the options I can just make it, it gives me the ability to automate tasks, it’s fun and it gives me a logical outlet.2
Best: I started a little game project with a coworker for our "8 hours a month" research/fun time.
Worst: I can't get used to be "just a soldier" on my actual team.3
It's in rc they said, write prod ready apps they said, it will be fun they said.. Arjziglfns.
just started rewriting for rc5 and modules, multiple declarations everywhere fml.
I just spent 3 days with 1 or 2 hour of sleep just for learning a new way to code. Not a project it just for learning. And it make me crazy i cant stop thinking about that. And now im not sleeping at all and code almost 24 hours. But i feel a lot of fun while writing a line of code. I enjoyed every sound i made with keyboard.
Im soo happy now i learned a lot of things. I dont know how to stop and i dont want to stop coding.
I dont know what im talking but thanks devrant for letting me post this shit.5
My computer started crashing two days ago. Logs say its the audio driver. Now I wanted to start the diagnosis just for fun. Guess what? The conclusion of it was: You have a low volume level, we will increase it by 20%p... GOD DAMN. YOU HAD ONE JOB TO DETECT THE DRIVER IS OBVIOUSLY CORRUPTED (Reason: Unknown)1
I'm developing a new (just for fun) programming language and I'm wondering what features I should add next? These features are already implemented:
- Printing text
- Datatype conversion (String, Int, Float, Bool, List, Dictionary)

is there anything you often use missing?11
When you type
"SFTP://SteffTek.de" in your browser window just for fun and devRant is missing you ❤️1
My current school project where I build a gps thief lock for my moped had me realized one thing. I don't want to go into Hardware Developing. The first problem took me about 4 months until I finally gave up and solved it differently. And this goes on and on and on. You fixed something and the next day it doesn't work anymore for some reason. I never had this problem when coding. It's fun to do stuff with electronics but coding is just way more rewarding. Anyone else had the same experience?1
Soo I am currently using Kali to have some fun.
While checking out MITMf I saw you can inject own JS scripts. I immediately begun to work on a "Marcel Davis Injectoin" Troll!
(FYI Marcel Davis is an German meme because he worked for an ISP as "The Service Guy")
My Script changes backgrounds, plays a Meme Song and puts a canvas in front of every input so you can't just click anything.
More features will come! :D stay tuned6
I was on glassdoor today, and a survey came up. The survey looks like market research for a product that sounds like it will be exactly like one of my side projects... Deciding if it's worth scrambling to beat them to market with what's barely a MVP and no marketing resources, or just chalking it up as fun and good experience.6
I signed up for a web developer job... I am now making programs in VB.NET
This was not what I was expecting, however I am completely fine with it.
Crash course learning is fun. Just know that the first hundred programs i write will be really unoptimised.
My fascination for programming began around 13, when i started developing plugins for my minecraft server in java.
Had an awesome time with creating plugins for some fully custom servers with relatively large playerbases(50-200 players, depended on the time of the day).
This sparked something in me, and i started creating crapp ass "portfolio" sites for myself with php and mysql login and registration forms. After that I got into some basic c# abd had fun with some cute console/form applications.
And here comes today, in the process of picking up more css, php, html, js knowledge, probably heading towards react or vue.
I just love programming to death.
Applying for an entry level software job and having the "let's do a hackathon" project. It's super fun cos I know the effort I put in doesn't actually matter since you'll just choose someone more experienced. But I still have to go ahead and put in max effort or you'll have a reason to call me lazy :(
So lately, I've been screen recording when I am working on my projects just for fun. I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) and SimpleScreenRecorder for screen recording. I'm using VidCutter for video editing but for some reason, it's giving me some errors and not able to save my edited videos. I don't want to do heavy video editing. I just want something like Windows movie make if some of you remember that.4
Nothing feels quite like starting an exploratory project with title "Just For Fun" on a cozy Christmas Eve.2
So we need a plumber, but first, show me some plumbing that you had do just for fun
-if every job would be like a developer
The most fun I ever had coding was when I first discovered Kotlin. After using java for most of the time I've been programming, Kotlin felt like a godsend. When working on converting one of my old projects, I was amazed by the reduced verbosity and just how clean it felt.
To any devs that still use java at all, do yourself a favour and take a look at Kotlin (kotlinlang.org)1
I just finished my second semester of computer programming. I then say to myself : "Let's use my new knowledge to make the program I worked on for fun two years ago better and more efficient!".
It was a bad idea.
When you finally start a project just for fun, and then you give your computer to IT to fix it. 1 whole week...
Just wrote the first part of what will become a rather large Go project!
Almost the whole thing is gonna be pluggable, which adds an extra challenge, but nevertheless, the is gonna be a fun ride!
Also, it's gonna be Open Source, but until I'm at a reasonably stable version, I'm gonna be leaving it closed. Lmk if you're looking for something to do and want to join, this is gonna be a big project.7
So I made an website(just a fun project) that gives you a popular song(in Romanian/English) from an Array of songs, the song is random.
Can anyone go to the website and test it for stability and see how it works on older browsers.
And yeah, you can also listen to some Romanian music in this time :)9
I gotta say I really love the beauty of being able to merge math, code, and hardware all in a well tuned symphony to make something awesome. Building an LQR controller for a custom quadrotor flight controller and it is just so much fun!
I was coding some random script for fun and my cousin that visited my parents that day walked in my room, he said
Him: Hey! What are you doing?
Me: Oh, I'm just coding, nothing really.
Him: Wow, I used to code too!
Me: Really? Didn't know you coded!
Him: Hahaha, now you know.
Me: Btw, what language did you use for most of
Him: I think I coded in HTML, if i'm not wrong.
i found playing with arduino is never-ending fun. and then i tried Raspi and feeling the same. now i buy a bunch of raspi and trying to cluster them up, just for another random project.
yeah this is clearly nonsense. this is myself when my boredom gets high enough. No, vacation is not helping, trust me i've been camping in a jungle for 5 days and the next week i go to the beach. this is bad.
making things worse, My way of life is like any ordinary people (or maybe a developers) but turned upside down for example I program, learning for fun, and going vacation is just another medical need that i need to follow.
I am an university student, studying IT. I've been programming since 6, and geeking anything around technology and astronomy till now. this is my third semester and i don't get challanged enough for this kind of curricullum. i need some kind of project that even i don't think about any number of money anymore, but just enough to challange me up. just need to get rid my boredom.
sorry for ranting from a to z, this is just buzzing around my mind.
There are few things.
1st is for sure the radio communication project im working on slowly but surely. (Making quiet the progress TBH with you).
Still im lacking encryption since the law limits that i can send only few messages per day. Have to do a calculator for that.
Other then that its working really well. Have to get somebody to test the range with me. Im hoping for at least 15km. 30 would be amazing.
And just for fun we are creating a tiny kernel just for fun and main idea here is to learn assembler and low level C. I mean structs properly and all that nasty lovely crap.
(It might be weird but yes Haxk20 doesnt know low level C even after 9 or so years of programming in C)
That is all i think.11
fml. too tired to learn something new. after staring at the screen for half an hour i give up, shut down brain and await to wake up more frustrated because lack of creation.
thought i'd spend a good time coding during my vacation but instead i am exhausted of home restauration. i can hardly remember when was the last time i did something just for fun and not because it simply had to be done.1
I haven't touched my OpenVPN server configuration in almost a year. Everything seemed to "just work" the way I wanted it.
I have now just found out that all ipv6 DNS queries were actually going to the wrong ip.
Why am I such a magnet for stupid shit like this?
Every time I try to do something beautiful, elaborate, complex, I always get some small shitty detail wrong.
It's like "close, but no cigar".
Bonus fun fact: I only found out thanks to Windows' DNS leak feature. Thanks, Windows!5
Contemplating buying a domain for 1€/year for my personal projects.
I don't even need it really. I'd just mess around with it and attach it to a random vps or something, just for fun.
My hands are itching. Please stop me!6
Is there anyone who actually likes using Angular?
I decided to learn it (im backend only for many years) to be less clueless in the frontend world.. and so far i find it horrible.
Is it just a "culture shock" or do frontent angular devs also find it.. not so fun to use?
What i dont like so far is the inconsistency of syntax.. i feel like similar things done differently and not following rules that can be learned, i can't remember/guess anything, everything needs to be googled
i.e- `*ngIf` vs `[ngSwitch]`
Not to mention 3 different syntaxes to simply bind a property..
I tried vueJs about 3 years ago and it was so fun and EASY21
I really love coding, like a lot. I code a lot of Web related stuff at work and I also learned a tiny bit about Java. But the problem is I only code at work. I never feel like coding at home just because I dont know what to code. I would love to start coding more at home, for fun obciously. Any suggestions?4
Today's progress. Updated the cms to update category titles :D So when you click the edit link, it displays the current category title in the input field. Then you just change the value and submit it to update the database info for that specific category. Fun stuff!
My old client, contacted me for a new project. He contacted at the right time when I'm getting rejected for jobs and just simply being bored with college. Excited to have extra cash to have fun at college and have a working purpose.2
Well IDK if it was possible but i just found out it is. Resident Evil 2 remake is black screen for me on X11.
I just for fun tried Wayland and to my fucking surprise it ran very well. Heck above 45fps on very high settings. Now that i call a nice surprise. Now just for that nasty firefox wayland bug where full screen videos get a black bar at the top and it will be for sure that i will use it as default.4
Just got accepted as a Tutor. I have to teach PhD students in medical field SciKit package for image processing. Been coding in Python using pandas and numpy for years, but I know jack shit on SciKit.
I applied just for fun and got the position. Now I am fucking terrified.
Meanwhile I rejected a Teaching Assistant position because of this one.6
Does somebody know how to send data to the PHP CGI executable directly and how to receive it (stdin/stdout)?
Or point me to a useful resource?
In a side project (just for fun) I try to implement the interface on NodeJS so I could process PHP through ExpressJS (long story).
I've been able to send and receive stuff, but the PHP CGI always tells me that I am "not allowed" to use this interface...
Docs/mailinglists seem reeeally old and don't want to go through the Apache source code 😅
Or does Node not have enough privileges for communicatig with PHP CGI exe?8
Every time I see someone praising the intelligence of the algo I imagine dfox and trogus sitting there laughing their asses of trying their hardest not to tell everyone it isn't that intelligent just has convenient timing
Almost like the texts in school that were written for fun but the teachers somehow made up the authors whole life story just by reading a line.
Apologies if the algo really is this intelligent allmighty creature2
So there is this Summer School happening in Banglore, IISc on 2-7 july. Just wanted to know if there is anyone from devrant who got selected for it? Or If any devranters are from IISc.
Would be fun to meet my fellow devranters there.
Wondering if Linuxxx fixed his SQL join problem yet... But I've just finished most of my app. Now I just need to start using it and see whether it's a keeper...
I changed the name though as you can see.
Now why can't work be this fun...
O yea ideas for icon?
So at work I still haven't gotten enough time to try/learn Docker/Openshift...
Should I just login on weekends to play with it, create some small projects to see how it all works?
One part of me says it my boss really want me to learn it, then he should clear the time for me.
The other part is like "I'm learning this for my own good and it might be fun since I'll finally be doing something new... And then I'll be the smartass on this too"5
The ability to ssh to an Earth terminal.
chown -R sionc /socialmedia/facebook
chown -R sionc /alphabet
I would then have the resources to do way bigger projects. Elon Musk can keep his businesses though. I like Elon Musk.
I'd maybe chown my company too, just for fun.
I'd ping my fiancé everytime she goes in a mood and ignores me for half an hour. She'd have to respond and it would annoy her. :3
userdel could be used on the bad people. >:)
There's probably a whole list of these that I've not even thought of that I'll see people write in the comments. I'm pretty sure this could get dangerous.6
Hello fellow ranters.
I'm looking for some inspiration in the kitchen.
Lately I've been on somewhat of a health binge. So I'm looking for some ways to make my dry and uninteresting food more interesting. Like a sauce or something.
I usually like hummus a lot. But it's getting old. Does anyone have any fun I can take inspiration from?
I'm not looking for recepies, just inspiration.
Don't know if I need to say this but obviously I'm not looking for unhealthy stuff. So nothing too fat.15
1. Being assigned as mentor just because my ex-mentor wanted me to be a mentor too or did just for fun. The sad part is the mentee that is assigned to me
2. Bestie coming to my city for convocation but can't meet me because her bf wants all the time together
3. Both 1 and 22
So, for my final year project I'm tasked with creating a mobile app for iOS and Android.
A YouTuber I watch avidly decides to go with Xamarin for his next app. Cool, I think: I'll go with Xamarin for my app too (I'd like to test run the app on PCs just for fun).
Looks for Xamarin tutorials, nice, found one! Goes into VS, creates a new project. I add "Hello World" to the centre of the screen.
*F5* Build started... 5 minutes later I come back and it failed. No reason why it failed, all parentheses closed, semicolon at the end of my only line of code.
Watches YouTuber's new video, he has the same problem ( ´ ▽ ` )ﾉ. He adds a button, builds, build fails. Tries a second time, build succeeds. And this goes on for a couple of minutes while he's troubleshooting the problem.
Oh well. Time for hell I guess.14
For all those who lurk here and enjoy other people's misfortune - you might enjoy the subreddit justnomil
It's about horrible mother inlaws (and sometimes just mothers) and is great fun to read and get riled up about3
finally after months and months of just planning and doing boring stuff a piece of code that was really just fun to code and plan for some days:
i just wrote my first "real" parser for a simple DSL. so much fun! i just really can recommend that to everybody.
i've use a parser combinator. the concept of this parser combinator ist to combine simple parsers (like when it starts with a number or a "-" and continues with numbers then its an integer etc) into a big one. i've written it in c# and used "Sprache" first and after some time i switch to "Superpower". a really great lib, but lacks a bit of documentation. anyway, i've your're interested in these things and want learn how your "daily code" gets parsed i would recommend that to you! :)
greetings to all fellow devRanters and happy coding / parsing! :)1
I just started maintaining a few AUR packages, and I got to say it's rather fun and rewarding, just to know that your responsible for making sure that something is up to date, and that no one using the package is getting anything bad.2
How do you guys explain to your CEO, PM, boss [whatever] that you cannot give them accurate time estimates for debugging? 😅
If something i made has a bug, and uses external libraries, not even debugging my code (more like, how i used / implemented something has a problem), i obviously have to first of all check what the hell is wrong ! I dont just make bugs for fun and happen to know exactly what is the problem and therefore the solution ...
So i got this service i made for fun and learning. Theres many providers in it for money, not me, only a little (lets not lie to ourselves).
Id just like to have a handful of happy clients to make it pay for itself so i dont lose money.
I have no idea how to advertise or gain clients. Those potential clients i cling with are from US and the server is in EU, and i wont convince anyone to buy something i wouldnt buy myself.
I suck at marketing.2
I've been playing with code for years, but only finally started trying to make it profitable by working through making websites for cash. A friend of mine is just getting into it brand new and is really dedicated. He is going to learn fast and I'm going to be able to walk him through a lot of my mistakes to move much faster than I did.
Is it bad that my favorite part of this relationship is that I will have someone that understands me when I make fun of jQuery?
I have not been able to work for quite some time already due to a chronic condition getting worse. Even when I have been at work I wouldn't get anything done due to chronic pain (a literal pain in the ass), so this year hasn't been very fun so far. I cannot sit nor stand for extended periods of time. I just want to be able to work again! :C8
I'm just testing out some code for Spring Boot with Spring web. Whilst inspecting Spring's HttpStatus enum I suddenly realized there are a lot more HTTP status codes than I had estimated. I knew there were many, but woah that's a lot.
On a side note, it really helps to debug work stuff at home. More concentration, more time and such.
Wk49 - Started by learning the basics from a C# book when I was around 14, then found a project I thought would be fun and started programming. My logic worked but wasn't the most efficient, but as I found more projects to do, my skills got better.
I'm now a full time programmer for a large company, I don't have any formal qualifications but now studying MTA.
You don't need uni to get a job in programming, just a passion for learning and patience.
linux and microsoft taking their battle to another level.
(credits pic owners)
should be linux vs windows though but just for fun
! Not a rant about Linux being better than Windows.
I used to ignorantly think that but experience and awesome community's like this have taught me better.
At a previous job I worked with Linux for ages and git used to how streamlined it is when working with a console. I then moved to Windows (to make games I'm Unity3D, which was awesome!) and found myself pining for a decent console. I finally found ConEmu which has a multi tab feature!
Just wanted to share this, knowing it made my life way more fun!6
After redhats totally dick move, who would actually stay with openshift paas? Theyll just take v2 down with a month notice and think no one is affected. They could do that to v3 too one day, they clearly dont think about the customers. I guess openshift isnt for production after all, only for fun.10
As an intern, my first assignment was to code a small script to parse some xml files. It was kinda fun because I like codind so I decided to do it in both JS and Python (just for fun). But now they asked me to install the VoIP stuff for everyone and it was boooring (also am I the only one getting so much bugs and errors on OVH's website?)
I knew I wanted to be a dev in 10th grade when my Chem teacher told me about the work environment & pay at Google. When I actually started learning to code, it was so much fun & the whole Google thing just seems like an added perk if I make it there.
(Apple wasn't quite the place for me)
I am bidding on freelancer for more than 2 months with the lowest charge with 1 day delivery but not getting any project. In fact nobody is getting selected for that project. At last what I see is No Freelancer Selected..
What the hell is going on Freelancer??
You need to change your protocols..or something..
Are the employer just making fun of us??2
Gave Windows VM 8Gb of RAM just for the fun o it. It ate all of it. Sure allocated it but still 4Gb usage after start. WTF windows ?
Also god damn performance sucks in Windows VM. Due to being on HDD. If i put it on SSD its OK but well dont have that much space TBH.
BTW i can have 4 VMs run with 2Gb RAM each and still have no issue on CPU side LUL.
AMD is awesome for this kind of stuff.
Ouuu yeah and its laptop.1
A bit of an off-topic, but people need to shut up about copyright.
I see people making cool fun stuff all the time, and they start talking about a liscence to use it and copyrights and stuff. Wtf!? I get it if you're making a big commercial project, but no one's gonna steal your cookie clicker clone nor your minecraft mod.
I get it that people want their work to be protected, but ffs it reay annoys me when people bring up legal stuff when mentioning a project that was clearly just made for fun.8
I've been trying and testing all kinds of frameworks to get up to speed with modern development. Tinkered with VUE. That was fun. Tinkered with Laravel. Also fun.
I would rather stock shelves at a supermarket then learn yet another crappt framework that will be redundant in 5 years. I'll wait for the next one.7
Mod_wsgi for apache is like scratching your freshly cut nails on a chalkboard while eating oysters covered in ketchup.
Why does WAMP have to be a pain for everything? I'm going to just use some premade thing for this because getting stuck on setup is not my idea of fun when I have python APIs to debug.4
Whenever I find answers after Googling for a long time, I open those links and immediately loose my concentration. I just let those answers pages hang out in my browser while I go do something fun and distracting...
Just finished a hackathon this past week trying to hone my skills in node. However, the amount of time I spent debugging stupid type errors was...quite miserable to say the least. Because of that, I’m looking for a new web library or framework XD. Anyone have some fun alternatives with languages that are preferably strongly typed?2
I’d either advise a small break where you just focus on other hobbies for a few and let yourself relax,
or I would say learn something new like a new programming language, or a new area of programming (like game development or web development) and just try to make your own projects and stuff that you find fun or new,
or maybe focus on something different in tech, like try IT, Networking, Security, etc.
I suppose it would depend on the person/circumstance.2
The timing for this weekly rant is quite perftect, as I have actually just finished rewriting JavaRant! :D I redid a lot of work tried to make it very easy to use, and I think it has improved a lot.
This was also a nice occasion for me to set up Jenkins on my personal server to use that as a CI server (not that it's really necessary, but it is fun).
If you like it, check it out on github: https://github.com/LucaScorpion/...
And feedback/help is of course always welcome!
today I learned how to license a git hub project have I finally made it to intermediate developer?
------if Ur interested in a little something I did just for fun--------
I recently got an Asus K53S for free, without HDD/SSD.
Im looking to purchase a cheap but kinda reliable and fast SSD, at 64GB or more. Money is an issue, and the laptop is just for pure fun, so id rather get bad quality and save some cash, rather than spending alot.
Does anyone know where i can purchase that, or have experience with cheap/trash SSDs? Any recommendations appreciated.
If its shipped from outside EU, the price should be $12 or less, and i doubt thats possible.24
Life has been cluttered for a while. Currently backing up important files to reset my Windows laptop and also install deepin OS.
May be even install MacOS on it just for fun.
Hoping for a fresh start to 20172
I'd like to dive deep into web development.
I'm creating a little tool for myself on a web page, including server-side php, css, html, mysql and jquery, all just for fun and the experience.
I've got several ideas on how I want this tool to work and behave ...
But it's fucking difficult to wrap my head around all those technologies available. I don't know how to achieve certain things (yet) and what even to look out for😣
Fun fact: I already experimented with HTML, CSS, jQuery before as a noob. Yet today I've forgotten almost everything and need to start almost all over again, now even including PHP and MySQL, too.
This is gonna be fine. 😐
Hey DevRant fam!,
I hope everyone is well as always! I was just curious... Very recently i bumped into a website called 'LeetCode' and was curious about trying to solve some problems for fun. However to me it seems that i get stuck on the wording or it just gets confusing,. I personally always enjoyed building things but wasn't really a fan of doing the actual coding problems from websites like this not sure if that is a terrible thing?, was wondering has anyone else been in this position? Maybe i'm lacking something? :-)
Would love to hear anyone's input! thank you for taking the time to read through my post as always!
Previous job I worked, we had a system for taking bookings. I may have made a slight miscalculation in implementing the payment api. Which resulted in people being double charged, undercharged etc. Tbh the payment gateway was ancient and we had to grapple with their SOAP API not fun. But just shows we all made mistakes, suppose it's how you deal with them, when they crop up that defines us as devs.
Anyone wanna start a project of some kind?
I'm a noob but I'm willing to help and learn along the way. I just wanna get as much experience as possible.
Doesn't have to be big but something cool and fun. I'd really like to make a game for Android and IOS10
Made me think and treat other people like disposable objects.
I also try to send as few packets to them as a result, u kno', to keeping the noise down.
Nah, just kidding.
But it has given me a solid foundation and framework for understanding for understanding so much in life..
Programming have also granted me something I continue enjoying and that I don't grow bored of quickly...
Particularly object oriented and event driven development have given me a pretty good ground to support me, on my personal endeavors onto noeroscience and understanding of the human mind..
Just for fun and curiosity tho :)
Hello, I'm new to programming and I need to write a website that allow some people to bet for sports match scores (without any money, just for fun). I want it to have leaderboard, personal statistics, easy way to add and remove teams from database (last one for administrator). My question is what programming language/maybe framework will be the best for that? I'm interested only in this bet system because rest is almost done. Thanks for help4
my ECC project is taking a while so sorry if anyone is still interested and waiting!
but I am trying to work out the bugs and maybe layout the frame work for anyone else who likes cryptography for fun and is just starting
I am building a synth program for producing waveforms such as binaural. The programs I have used in the past have been mediocre.
In that project I am working on a realtime scope to visualize the waveforms. It is fun to learn how to streamline moving data between parts of the application. Right now it has a lot of unnecessary data copying going on, and resizing of vectors. So I am reading some books on high performance C++ to learn how to do this better. As part of this I am thinking about building a circular buffer so the vector is never resized and is always in contiguous memory.
Just plain fun!4
Job interviews finished! I just kept one at Rouen (embedded systems) , and now I'm waiting the answer for Nice (Cry Engine).
Gosh I want to live in Nice and be a game developer, that looks really fun. I mean I enjoyed the test x)
Let me hope a bit guys :p
Does anybody know any good software engineering companies to work for around LA? I'm looking for an entry level software engineering position. Full stack would be ideal, but at this point I just want to get my foot in the door with a good company where I can learn a lot. Maybe even a company that knows how to have fun too (if that's not too much to ask hehe 😅).3
I always love when I pick C again just for fun. I'm really used to "print" something if I'm not sure about that in basically everything.
You wanna print something in C? Well unless you know what and where it is (no point of print-checking then), it'll just happily crash without any reported error. Not to mention if I wanna find a bug, I don't have to get a debugger! Printf alone is basically a breakpoint! Ah stupid me :D
As soon as we got into the actual coding part of my first college programming class, I loved it. The next semester, I took two more programming classes and an introductory web development class, and about halfway through that semester, I knew this was what I wanted to do for a living. 2 1/2 years later, I've worked as web developer, both for a small company and a freelancer, I have a web development internship lined up for this fall that I'm excited about, I've written a few smaller programs in a couple languages just for fun, and I wouldn't want to do anything else at this point.
From last one week I m just sleeping for 2 hours trying to solve a problem in elasticsearch by writing plugin .. its always fun i never understand when it becomes 7am in the morning.
Have your ever tried to reply the spam message just for fun? I tried this with my legit email address now again they won. Fwak them.2
I want to use a old (like around 6 years or so) old laptop with a i3 as controllcenter (for music, smarthome and stuff), writing machine and for some light virtualization maybe. It will run Arch (because i want toll tinker around with arch, so much fun ^^) and i just want to know your oppinions: Good Idea, Bad Idea and do you think it will even be working?2
I'm wanting to basically make a program or collection or scripts to automate all the boring parts of my life (cause I'm a lazy shit basically)
Any idea on what would be the best language to do this. I'm thinking python tbh. The end goal is going to be bills being payed ( I will out money manually into a PayPal account or something for this) and shopping being ordered to my house. Like I said I'm thinking python but wondering if there is anything better. I'm gonna end up having a computer or something set up just for theses scripts as will then extend into home automation or whatever I think looks fun. As the best way to learn is to try and making something fun2
Not a job but some years ago I have set up a boot password, I don't even remember, on 2 school computers...
Just for fun...
They didn't catch me though :)1
Aww... The End
Only took a few hours for them to catch but this game wasted basically an entire week so guess this is for the better.
Honestly turned out to be like any other mobile free to play... And I couldn't figure out what was so fun about it.. Probably just the small rewards that keep u coming back but eventually the lvls are pretty impossible... Only a whale can get there... Or sometime really dedicated to the game
Back to Poker...3
Is it just me who feels the application they are currently working on is dumb, filled with issues, basically a pile of shit no matter how big/small easy/complex it actually is.
Just today for fun I opened up a clients webApp I worked on long ago, which I considered as shit but it I actually kinda got impressed by myself lol.
I now realize after binging for 3 days that Prime Video is a lost cause.... The time wasted is just not worth it... And my watchlist. I have about 270 movies that I at least need to preview and isn't going to get smaller... Especially if I'm "trying to get my money worth"
Quite frankly it takes the fun out of watching movies... At least for me.
My first annual subscription will end in 2 months. I guess I'll miss the prime shipping but guess I'll go back to grouping orders... Hopefully won't need it though.1
I used to write documentation for the applications i created. It was fun, some how, for me. But now situation has changed. Who will read that long documentation when you can just dial my number and ask? Now i feel like i am an author without a reader base.1
I'm thinking of building an open-source React Native app for DevRant just as a fun project. I came across an unofficial API documentation and also a wrapper.
If anyone has used these, kindly let me know your experience and which one is better.
PS: I have no intention to publish or earn money from this project. Anyone who is interested can jump into the project and help in making it better. If enough people want to use it, I can compile an apk/ipa for people to download later on.
A friend of mine asked me to create a Discord Bot for him with randomly generated jokes / puns. The coding process might be easy, I know how to make bots, it'll just be the "random puns" that'll bother me. How could I make that?
I thought about having two "databases" where the bot could randomly pick a "start" and an "end" for the jokes. It will surely generate bullshit but that could be fun.
Anyone here knows of any joke that could be cut in half? Google's propositions aren't funny at all and I'm not funny at all.6
Just be true to yourself and to them. Know your own terms when looking for a job, and know if their terms fit with you. Ask them a lot of questions. These questions should provide you a glimpse of what their company culture is like. Try to have fun during the entire process. Don't stress out. And believe in yourself!
****these tips are actually somewhat meant for me but we're all in this together in the process of job hunting
Hey all, just want to say thanks in advance. Last night, my friend and I were in a project together (realtime), and I was teaching him about some basic Keras models in python, stacked with tensor flow. When we were at school the previous day, he was really interested in the actual concepts behind the code, but when we were actually making the model, he seemed kind of uninterested. I suspect he was just getting distracted, and its better to write down the code and go over it at school, but is there some way I can try and make it more fun/interesting for him?3
If anyone is looking for a great tutorial on getting started with a docker cluster check out https://dockerswarm.rocks/
I had a 4 node cluster up on Digital Ocean with Traefik + Lets Encrypt, Prometheus, Portainer, Grafana all that good stuff in under 2 hours. Not much longer to test a basic WP and Next Cloud container with full SSL. Neat stuff. Just burning through $100 credit for testing but it's been fun5
Just asking for an opinion, I'm gonna do a project. Which one would you guys recommend MEAN or Ruby on Rails? I just want to do this project for fun and as a side project I know somewhat node js but RoR seems fun so what will you guys recommend??8
Hey my bros. I’m trying to create a simple messenger bot just for fun using this tutorial:
But it seems that I’m kinda stuck with setting up the webhook on the fb page, it displays an error
“the url couldn’t be validated, callback verification failed...”
I googled for answers but it seems that it doesn’t work for me. Can you please help me? Thank you so much.4
I kinder have two phones now and I bought one only for fun and testing apps &dev rant , I made a simple java app where I can control one phone only because I don't wanna mess anything on the other , trying to find a way to hide a simcard inside ,so when I lost it I can always find it, or just run a custom ROM ,but too scared to mess it up haha4
Well that was fun while it lasted... (1 day) Now I think I need a new person to impersonate... Or maybe just build a bot to impersonate anyone for me... Automatically...
So, to keep a long story short, I am for the second time in my life the proud owner of a Macintosh Performa 6115CD in working order. The original Descent is just as fun as I remember it being—after taking a day to remember the best control configuration for keyboard.
I've got some ideas on how to get it online* so that I can transfer things to it.
Just for fun, however, I've been thinking it might be an interesting project to try and do some programming for it. I got my start on this setup, though not in Objective-C. Anyone happen to know of any free/abandonware coding setups for classic Mac? Running 7.5.3 at the moment.

I just wrote up the most fun and vitriolic rant about Windows 10 Calendars. I was about to add that after entering the info. correctly, when I saved it, it lost half the info.
The rant disappeared offa my screen. Don't tell me I'm losing my mind. The stress of the possibility of DJT winning the election took care of that. I just wonder if the orig. rant will show up now.
Thanks for keeping me from going batshit crazy for another year. I'm deeply indebted to you all.
Was solving algo problems for the last few hours again. It's for technical interview prep but what I realized was...
If I just see them as puzzles rather than a pointless barrier to me getting a better job... they actually become fun...
That and maybe I'm bored at work, need something intellectually challenging/requires thinking, and out of ideas for personal projects I want to build.
