Last day of work at this place, my students offered me this t-shirt 😍
I'll miss them, they amazed me by their learning capabilities.
Starting a new job on Monday involving Flask and AngularJS, I hope I won't have to rant too much 😅16
Holy mother of god, 100K!
Honestly what happened? Upvote sprees or something?!
I left devRant with 95K this morning 😱
I'll do a bigger rant later, just came out of work, most of the day went well but last hour was more stressful than anything so gonna go home (have a coffee on the way) now and prepare an emergency security blog article (something happened in the security/spy world).
As much as we love to complain about our PMs and coworkers, I feel blessed to be in a field where after working all day, I enjoy what I do so much I come home and work on my own projects. Who's with me?11
Worked all day and got my embedded systems project working the first time! Bluetooth as well! 😁
It's a Fitbit clone that keeps track of steps that I did from scratch and writing the companion app from scratch as well in flutter/dart. Ask any questions if you're curious!35
New job (first CS job).
Day 1: Install Ubuntu
Day 2: Dev said "it was so cute when he asked if he could uninstall windows." Also, first pair programming with engineer of 12 years. First commit (he did all the work, I just tried keeping up."
Day 3: "Here, try this bug " nearly get there. Have to leave early. Team event (Group VR experience, was wicked fun with drinks afterwards. Turns out boss man is a total bad ass. Swam with sharks and giant Wales)
Day 4: Fix bug. Notice odd behaviour. Fix that too. (All on my own). Code review: "This, that but works and is good." Get asked if I want to go to customer to do A, B and C. Tell Boss I only know B. He said "Tell me what you need for A and C."
I'm so God damn happy.8
Me: Your computer has Operating System corruption.
Customer: What does that mean?
Me: *something, something potato chips* and the only fix is to reinstall Windows.
Customer: Well that's stupid! I need my computer! Darn Windows! Microsoft should pay for that reinstallation! What causes that corruption anyway?
Me: Well, any number of things, but it's mostly caused by a part of the update not downloading correctly, so when it gets installed it creates a hole.
Customer: So now hold on... could shutting the computer down during the updates cause this corruption.
Me: It could, yes. That's why they say to not unplug your computer or shut it down while running the updates.
Customer: I see. Cause yeah, I remember that I was angry when it said it had to do updates, so I shut it down.
Me: Yep, that would cause it.
Customer: Okay, reinstall Windows...11
I have a little Gradle,
It's slow as f*king sin,
And when I'm on a deadline,
It loves to sit and spin.
Oh, Gradle, Gradle, Gradle,
It takes all goddamn day,
I guess I'll make some Ramen,
'Coz Gradle loves to play.
PM: What did you do yesterday?
Me: Tried to come up with a funny post on DevRant.
PM: Wait... So you didn't write any code?
Me: Oh yeah of course I did! I came up with algorithm that grabs the highest rated rants and compares them to determine the best time of day I should post said rant, to get the best possible amount of up votes.10
Managing an app in Canada, came back home to Thailand to visit my parents.
No deployments while you're gone, just bug fixes, boss said.
Landed at 3am, "hey I know we only support desktop but we got new customers only on iPad, make it responsive in a day and deploy." Wtf.
Haven't even seen my parents. In Starbucks.15
Cute girl: what do you do for work?
Me: I'm a programmer
Cute girl: Meaning?
Me: that I spend all my day seated in front of a computer doing computer programs
She: (waits 20s) hmm, so i forgot my Facebook pass...
Me: go to hell (leaves)12
SpaceX just landed their first reused first stage and is in the process of recovering the fairings.
I watched the livestream and cried like a lil bitch.
TODAY HISTORY WAS MADE
I can't wait to talk with my kids about today. And I can't even imagine what we'll be capable of at that time.
It took SpaceX 15 years to pull that off and I can't wait to see more. I can't even think about the amount of engineering and developing involved in this project.
Things like that let me believe in humanity.
HAVE A NICE FUCKING DAY <311
!!rooting while drunk
I got drunk last night and painted my nails. I bought a really pretty shade of purple that should match one of my favorite shirts, and it's my last day at the office today (EVER; lease is up), so dressing up is a great idea, right? I'll feel better and more confident and it'll make everyone miss me.
Except. I was drunk.
And for some reason thought painting them in the dark was a great idea.
Oh, they look horrible!
and apparently I don't own any nail polish remover, so.
Today's going to be the best day ever!
After knocking off from work, I went to nearby Coffee shop to grab a Coffee. I met a girl and we started talking about our day. She asked me to do her a favor and take a look at her laptop, it’s been playing up for sometime now. So, I went. She took me to her bedroom where the laptop was, and the conversation continued on topic romance, sex and girlfriend. You know what happened next…Yes.
For the first time in my life I fixed a hot cheeks computer and got laid.
What was wrong? There was a malware in her computer which was opening random websites.22
Communication with a new RFID-Reader:
"Hello RFID-Reader" - "何?"
Okay: "ハローリーダー" - "¿Qué?"
Seriously? "Hola lector RFID" - "Что?"
Wait a minute...
[puts wire into *correct* port of the development system]
"Hello RFID Reader" - "Hello"

It's been a long day and the brain is obviously the first thing to go to sleep... even when you're still awake.2
Last teacher rant from me and this one is about: my mentor.
Let's call him Bob.
He was a person who'd always be ready to help you out, did some lessons on bullying and the effects of it, stood by me many times when I'd have hard times with something I'd trouble and one of the most important things, he had a very good sense of humor!
Also, since I always wore a suit (still do), he introduced 'FaF' day, aka, Fancy as Fuck day. Every Wednesday the guys who wanted to would come in suits.
Yup, he got me through loads of stuff, miss that guy :)7
We keep ranting about managers, here is something good about mine. He increased my salary a 100% of my current. Which is freaking awesome.
That's all have a good day. ☺️8
Gooooood morning devRant! Fucking friday, fuck yeah.
Hereby a rant which @dfox asked to make to test if a possible bug is fixed.
Have a great day everybody and thanks to dfox for keeping me in the loop on this!22
So now I'm working on my first collab with a fellow devRanter on a privacy website thingy! Excited and want to start working on it right away.
BUT OH NO I'VE GOTTA GO TO WORK IN 15 MINUTES TO STAND BEHIND A TABLE PACKING MOTHERFUCKING BOXES ALL DAY, YEAH NO THAT SOUNDS FUCKING COCKSUCKING EXCITING. (okay I can pay rant but still).
I need a hug 😞45
Probably isn't a righteous rant... But there's a new guy who shakes his leg... All day... Makes my screen wobble... All day... Trying to think about about my code... But thoughts being shaken to the floor... All. Goddamn. Day.
Follow up rant from my previous one about the Linux job hunting.
Recruiter called today! He said that the company he recruits for is looking for people with a lot of Linux experience and since I've been working with it for seven+ years (not extremely long but keep in mind that this job requires no certifications etc except for a highschool diploma) he really wants me on board.
Asked him what my chances are and if he could be honest about that (it's a genuinely nice recruiter) and he replied with "95 percent".
It'd be loads of traveling every day but including free certifications etc so awesomeness!
Let's see how this goes :)7
It's my first day on devRant. It's been hilarious so far. Everyone seems really cool and interesting.
I'd post a rant but I'm more tired than annoyed by anything right now.
Cheers from Argentina!9
<This is my first rant, though I've been spectating in readonly mode (ie, without an account) for a while now./>
*Programs all day Saturday adding innumerable lines of code to a new project*
*Builds and runs project*
*Everything not only compiles, but the app works flawlessly*
Quite the opposite of a Rant actually. Very good day today! Had pancakes to start the day, finally got a second monitor for only 5 bucks - it is so much easier to program with live change monitoring!
And, I finally got my very own server rack :) just wanted to share!10
Rant rant = new Rant
rant.isRant = false // !!!
I woke up this morning after not thinking about my code for a day, and realized i had a flaw in my validation design. I fixed it before opening my eyes.
It's kind of amazing how not thinking about a problem can help solve it. Even if you don't know it's there!6
It's 21:42. I had 1 month to write a report on my internship. Day after tomorrow is submission. I'm starting now.
I deleted Facebook Inc.'s products long time ago, deleted YouTube app, removed Quora account, put filters on suggestions for Stack Exchange networks, blocked Reddit, stopped Spotify, started Trello/Wunderlist/Evernote to organise thoughts, ForestApp and StayFocusd for controlled browsing, deleted Tumblr etc. All this just to focus on the report and get it done as soon as possible.
Now I FOUND devRant! What the fuck world! Why!? I'm now ranting about issue on devRant with this rant. <- this sentence is a meta, if you didn't realise.9
My first rant so be kind ;)
All week have been waiting for a day off to finish a side project, and when that day finally comes, my daughter has a fever.
Will have to wait till next week.6
So, Today was the last day of my internship.
and it was a great last day but everything was fine until.
I started my computer and for some reason it got caught up in boot. It didnt start Nautilus.
So i asked a Senior Dev for help. Nice as these Devs are, he helped me look for reasons. And we found them. My ubuntu hadnt had enough disk space to start. (On a side note there is nothing but Atom Firefox and a few files on there.) So we looked for the biggest files in the system and found them. Syslog was 40 Gb big. And if you think that is shocking behold. Because Syslog.1 was 290Gb big.
Not really a rant but a Story.6
That moment you write some magnificent code and everyone is sleeping so you can't share it with anyone but you feel like the room should turn into an exciting musical where you win an award. (Best code can ONLY be written between the hours of 12am and 6am)
The next day, you try to explain to your significant other (user) how amazing this new genius way of doing that "thing" was, in hopes of sharing your excitement but all you get is a "you're such a dork" instead.
You may even try to share it with a coworker or fellow programmer but somehow they just don't see how exciting it is for you.
Today is my age++ day !
And with it came the end of school, a new job in an awesome company, a new life in a new city !10
Yesterday was my first day at my first internship as a naive rising uni soph. I brought my tiny 13 inch thinkpad thinking I was gonna code on that. Imagine my surprise as I walk in and HR brings me to a table with 4 monitors on it. l o l
I like it there.1
Boss challenged me to get something done before a demo and he'd give me tomorrow off paid. I completed the task on the time and at the end of the day told him I was leaving for another position. He was totally calm, cool, professional and still gave me tomorrow off paid. I don't know how that happened. Life is good.4
Just had my first day at my new job at a games studio.
It was fucking amazing! They were all so nice and understanding and they were techy as well! Finally I can talk to someone about work and they'll understand what I'm saying!3
Sooo... I didn't posted a thing in a while sooo.
I GRADUATED YESTERDAY WUHUUU
(I hope used the word graduate right)
Today my first day, still in Germanys biggest (and most hated) IPS as an planner of new telecommunication routes (love planning fiber)
I hope I can still dev, at least I am able to spend more money on tools I don't even need ❤️❤️7
You guys made my whole day for the first time since I joined. (yes all of you!)
1) I had a 'fight' with a guy I'm making a startup with. Had to explain some of the story of my life, just to clarify that I'm not evil or generally unwilling to understand - regarding me, having the need to keep using practices
2) I've found that a whole niche-community of people seems to ignore the rest of the community and won't tag along. Having spent several months to be able to help, and receiving shit or absolutely nothing, for finally trying
3) Was in a bad mood the moment I woke up, because I fought with my girlfriend last night because she fails to communicate simple things and won't realise it.
Sorry for the bad punctuation, I tried and smartphones aren't a nice way to edit such things.
So my rant is basically a thank you! Not a rant.. But still, I think you people are the best for being so relatable and making me laugh, and feel like there's more of 'my kind'.
I also just fixed a bug in my app by (finally!) asking the framework maintainer what's up, and got a response which made no sense in a logical manner.. That's a rant for another day, I'll aggregate all the 0 fucks given, when I'm finally able to leave this thing behind, and give you a proper curse-filled shit stack of the nonsense I'm experiencing!
The bug would still live if I weren't so energized by devRant
EDIT: '!' != ','1
Nothing quite like spending a day coding with a friend on a project way over your head and actually making progress and learning shit. That feel when you run your script and it gives a DIFFERENT error? Or when it doesn't even crash at all?? Or when it ACTUALLY WORKS?!
I just experienced the opposite of rant.
I spent 1 entire day ranting about a algorithm I couldn't write with no issues, it occupied all my mind and got me pissed of.
And today, I rewrote it entirely, and it works perfectly everywhere.
I was like : "No it can't work here. Oh ok", "And here's the bug ! No ? Nice.", "Don't tell me it'll work here. I'm a God".
That's why I love being a dev :D
Thank you, you freaking problem I had !7
That rejuvenating feeling when you've been trying to get a piece of code working for days, google hasn't helped, and you're just about to call it another lost day, when a random "what happens if I do this" solves everything.
I'm going to dream about puppies, prancing through a meadow, and rootbeer floats tonight!2
I just wanted to say how much I freaking love this place. I come here every day, and what I find is a magical community of people who are accepting of everyone, supportive of each others hopes and dreams and sympathize with those struggling with jobs or school or just life in general. DevRant honestly makes the world a better place, at least for me. Thank you @dfox and @trogus for this beautiful Eden!3
You know, the whole AWS outage being caused by a typo while debugging got me thinking... whoever did that is most probably a developer who had a REALLY bad day. Could that person be on DevRant? Because the story of what the rest of that day and week was like for him or her has the chance to be the most epic rant on here ever. Poor guy/gal.3
!rant I don't understand how a lot of you guys can work 10-14 hours a day! I see a lot of those messages and it makes me wonder if I am a lazy dev or something. After 8 hours of working I'm just exhausted and wanting to go home to my family :/12
From this rant: https://devrant.com/rants/1842092/...
For the one piece lovers put there. My buddy made the ship and although i'm not good at watching anime i appreciate the work he puts in. I'm just here sharing hes work, maybe its for you and maybe it isn't but as a person i would like to live in a world where everyone got to achieve some success doing something they love.
The work of him (PS, hes a writer too)
Have a good day all7
Thanks again devRant, @dfox and @tragus.
Those stickers are amazing.
Hope to get the stress ball one day too.
Btw @dfox what do you mean with +1’s here? 500 +1's on a single rant for a ball4
Its been a few hours, and i was busy with meetings but
THANK Y'ALL FOR 10K ++
I remember wk20something, when i joined devrant. I was just starting a job as a data analyst, and the wk at that time spoke to me on a personal level, so i wrote a quick rant and didnt give it much thought. The next day i opened devrant and had like 100++s and a bunch of comments. Since then ive met a lot of awesome people here and im happy i clicked the install button back then. Thanks cfox and brogus for the opportunity, love ya.
Already got a longboard as a 10k-day gift :^)2
Rant. Always start debugging with the start point :p
We have a lamp with a dimmer.
A day, the dimmer make some noisy noise. Just down it and the lamp never bright again.
I open the dimmer, check all connection, bullshit what is wrong?
I decide to bypass the dimmer with a standard interrupter. But doesn’t work.
Finally.... I check the bulb 💡 and... burned...
Morality: if the bulb doesn’t work, check the bulb!
My wife saw me posting on Dev Rant raging about my boss, and suggested I ought to use a different user name instead of my usual one... considering he spends all day using social media I think she might be right... passed the advice on to some friends we are all now paranoid and have new accounts. <33
!dev but still rant
So I'm a photocopier technician by day, alcoholic coder by night. Just spent 3 fucking hours trying to diagnose a black line on print outs, checked drums, dev units, toner cartridges, fusing unit, everything...
Called up one of the guys I work with and they said to come back with some samples to try and pin it down...
I turn around to leave and remember I didn't check the transfer belt and lo and behold it isn't cleaning and is smearing the paper...
3 fucking hours to work out such a simple error, I've had program breaking bugs diagnosed and fixed by then... ugh -.-1
Epic newb here. Like, can-barely-read-HTML new. But I'm curious and interested. I work in an office filled with very skilled developers, and I bring the human component to the operations. Not a day goes by when I don't learn something, or teach something. Sadly, that enriching experience accounts for maybe half an hour of my day. I wish it was more. Anyhoo, rant on, Wayne!8
Started with a small rant on the platform to meeting some awesome people.
And now look what I got.
Love from NY to KTM that made my day brighter. 😍😍8
Not really a rant. But, since I found devrant I started needing less caffeine to help me get me through the day.2
Earlier this day i reached 1000++. Nice, isn't it?
Suddenly an idea comes to my mind.
Why not make a rant and thank everybody? And now comes the important part:
Why not make up a funny story telling how i met @dfox and welcomed @linuxxx and @alice on devRant?
Because somehow the story isn't funny at all because nobody got that it was a joke...
People think i'm really old (19 btw.)
People think I know @dfox personally
@linuxxx can't even remember how I never welcomed him
So... sry... I guess? But thanks for the really nice comments!9
So... The kid from yesterday's rant....
Keep in mind that I have been in classes with him for 5 years.. and he has been annoying me the whole time
I will post a link to yesterday's rant that I am referring to in the comments.
He has spent the whole day annoying everyone in the class and he has spent the last 2 hours stealing our computers and making himself the owner of all of our files then sharing them to him.
What should I do???33
Spending a lot of time in 'recent' I greet many people with "Welcome to devRant" every day.
The funny part: half of them used devRant before I even knew it existed but they just now decided to write their first rant8
It's a non-working holiday at the office so I'm at home doing nothing. I asked my boyfriend what to do for the whole day then he said "Spend your day to something you really enjoy".
So I'm building a new project. What an exciting day!1
One day Boss was doing code review of my work
Boss to me: What the fuck dev1!?!? All efforts I spent to quit smoking and your XML routine gave me cancer anyway!
Another day, a colleague needed to make change to a program that hasn't been changed in looong time and sees a commit from our Boss done 15yrs ago!!!
Dev2 to Boss: Boss this signal catching routine sucks dicks! How did you become a our Boss?
Me to dev2: He sucked as many dicks as his routine did
Boss to us: Oh look! Performance appraisal is due this week. Bye-bye 7.5%
Here 7.5% referring to pay raise that is average pay raise3
My first ever post! So awesome to find out dev rant and cheer up my day as I go thru everyone's story/rant.
I was single the whole time while I'm at school. After graduated, I finally pick up the pace to date girls. So I signed up for a few online dating sites/apps. Every single time that I create a new profile for the app/site, I always get frustrated and confused about the language field. Especially when there's only selector or check box for languages selections.
Boss just gave me a bonus out of the blue for my "continuous show of dedication and engagement". Not sure what I did specifically to deserve it, but pretty happy nonetheless!
Not really a rant, I just wanted to share. Spent the whole day smiling like a retard :)2
Has anyone been in a situation where a sr dev, with 12 yrs of experience and paid more than you, can't fix something after trying for a week and now the boss comes to you and expects you (a lowly paid dev with only 5) to fix it in a day, now that it's super urgent?
That describes my day... FML... I have to do overtime tonight...
Feels nice to have some place to rant now though....10
Finally did it! Since yesterday about 17:00 CET I am a fully blown "Fachinformatiker Anwendungsentwicklung".
Today the first day of work where I get finally paid a living wage!
Sorry for breaking the protocol, but I'm not here to rant. I want to thanks all the ranters (is that a thing now?) for recommending Mr. Robot (the TV series). Just watched the first episode and I can see myself watching it all day. Be back tomorrow.6
Just saw a thread about Global Reddit Meetup Day. Do we have one in devrant? If not, is it possible to have one? I know the user base is not comparable with reddit, but it would be fun meeting other local developers who rant too 😛8
<rant>why the fuck do live demos NEVER work properly when a day ago the code was fine?? What is this bullshit sorcery!?</rant>7
What a beautiful day:
Made myself coffee.
Started fixing wifi on my ROM.
Spent entire day fixing it without any luck.
Searched forum for a little error i got booooooooom.
What i dont see. Wifi is dependent on Bluetooth clock. Like wtffffffffff ??????? WHYYYYYY ??????
Tomorrow im gonna test if fixing BT makes it working and if so then im gonna be mad and the RANT will be the best rant you ever got from me.3
a big thanks to dfox and trogus for making this app, and ofc to the wonderfully whacky and awesome community here!
My job situation has been difficult lately, and this app helped me tremendously with coping.
So: thanks everyone!
// anti rant over, enjoy your day! ( or don't, who am I to tell you what to do) 🙃2
Someday I will have a rant that gets enough ++ to get a stress ball. Until that day I will keep taking out my stress on my poor mouse. At least I hardly ever use it so it doesn't matter if I break it...
My fucking awesome ass JS #SwagDuckie arrived!
Also, stickers arrived the other day. I ended up mounting them on Black because the Apple logo shining through annoyed me 😊
Now I need a vinyl design that looks like a duckie for the back of the laptop.
Thanks @dfox, @trogus; international shipping to the uk was remarkably fast, I was shocked.13
With all the people around here ranting about their PM's, I'm really curious to see how a PMRant app would look like. What are they complaining about?
Devs that listen to music all day long and never want to be disturbed?
Engineers who talk in long, incomprehensible words?
...TDD taking too long?3
This rant has been boiling for a long time now so please bear with me. Here it goes.
A slight introduction of the lady working in my office. She's a soft spoken person who works for like 2 hours a day at max (rest of her time goes on surfing facebook etc).
NOW WHAT FUCKING GRINDS MY GEARS IS THAT SHE FUCKING THINKS SHE KNOWS HOW TO "CODE" ONLY BY KNOWING HTML!! FML
She claims of being a Social Media Expert, Digital Guru. But, SHE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO FUCKING USE GOOGLE TAG MANAGER!!
MY WHOLE FUCKING DAY GETS RUINED BY EVEN INTERACTING WITH HER!!!!!!3
A few days ago I had an interview, they asked me if I knew Angular. I told them I never used it, and they told me to give it a go anyway. I made what they asked me to do in 8 hours and submitted it for review. Today they called and said they liked it, and asked me to go there tomorrow to talk terms.
Well, tomorrow could be my first day as an Angular developer!3
I just wrote a long-ass rant and deleted right away because it was, again, a FUCKING WALL OF TEXT.
I fucking need to learn to summarize my thoughts.
I'll write it again another day, and I think I could even divide it into two rants.
PS : that was a rant about my fucking verbose mind, so no category problem here.3
Yesterday was an extremely stressful day. Several things went wrong, clients were already preparing for the weekend, a horrible headache was building up during the day, all in all: a day, where you'd better have stayed in bed. Finally home, I approached my mailbox, put the key in, opened it, expecting bills or similar things to... *cough* sweeten *cough*... my weekend, but instead found a letter from devRant.
Guys, I gotta tell you, this really made my entire day (if not my entire weekend). I know it's silly, because we're basically talking about a letter and some stickers, but it's the small things one should appreciate, as they can brighten the worst days.
Thanks @dfox and @trogus for building such a great platform, that allows fellow developers to vent about *certain* things from time to time. Keep up the good work!2
All I want in life is to be left alone in a fucking sub-basement somewhere so that I can just code and research and drink coffee and ignore other humans until the day I die.
Is that so much to ask? To be left the fuck alone?
PLEASE NO MORE EMAILS OR PHONE CALLS CLIENTS! I JUST WANT TO WOOOOORRK!5
So I was told why a bash with Git isn't allowed in my company.
The people that built the development kit (IDEs, tools, etc) estimated that Git wasn't necessary since integrated in Visual Studio.
They clearly never tried to do a pull request or a rebase then. Good to know.
(a coworker gave me a way to have a bash anyway, so that made my day \o/ but rant needed anyway)
They say a rant a day is good for you.
So I’m just going to leave this here for anyone looking at trying somethingn new.
$15 for what appears to be every course @udemy
This might seem like a dumb rant to have but I just started a new job, and I asked my boss about the Work From Home policy and basically, there is no work from home, at all. I'm bummed out because I got into a really good WFH rhythm at my last job and now I have to go into the office every day, even though I am stationed in a different city than the main company office anyway. I'm already remote! Why do I have to pay to come into work remotely anyway!? Argh.15
My first rant! let's see what is about!
Greetings from Venezuela, the oil and corruption country of South America...
Is it possible to become a good software developer just being constant, every day trying, even when you don't know what you're doing but, keep it up till you accomplish a goal? Or is anything more needed to succeed? I mean I'm trying to make my first desktop app and sometimes I feel like fck! I'm leaving this... I'm trying to dominate the software development process to get better a better job, in here or out there... But geez its hard...
Well, I want to believe that maybe someday I will become a good software developer...
First rant without thinking too much...10
Does anyone have an idea about a nice goodbye message to write on cakes for my last day on my summer job?
- Should be short enough so I can write it with a choco pen on 20 cakes of about 10cm each.
- Should be about me leaving (I worked on a terminal application in qt c++)
- Should have something to do with programming17
Good April fools day joke on my mom. Wrote a vbscript to make an error popup and changed the background to a BSOD, then force killed explorer.exe. Yeah, popups don't appear on bsod screens, but the whole thing completely freaked her out. She basically thought the world was coming to an end 😂😂
Happy new year to the best community ever. May you have more ++ this year.
As promised, 2018 is the year i will TRY to post a rant a day. 😁😁😁 Wish me luck.1
!dev, very !rant
Going to Romania tomorrow and the next day will finally meet my girlfriend's parents (she's from there). More nervous than I expected to be about a (hopefully) simple thing.14
It's weird how a tiny gesture from someone you care about/like is enough to make your whole day.2
Not a rant, of course, as life is amazing but...
... Here is a rare, beind the scenes look at what happens on the back end of our office.
Wishing you all a brilliant fucking' day from Bulgaria's Black Sea coast...13
Today I showed some of my non-programmer friends results of a simple program I wrote (very simple but very visual). They really enjoyed it and even thought of alterations I was able to implement.
I really enjoyed feeling that what I do has meaning 😊
Hope you have a good day!1
Very high number of quality rants lately. Trending up fast in my opinion. Even today - Saturday which used to be a lighter day.
Becoming a nice challenge to read them all. Way to go. Keep on ranting! What do you think about the rant volume and quality?2
Shamless rant towards the shamless Cursey dude. 😫
So whole day I have been trying to pass a variable from laravel blade view to vue2 component file. All in seperate files. I know that I have successfully passed 1 or 0 in same flow before. So I was following the same steps to pass my string variable. It kept giving me undefined. No google helped and I had been doing all kinds of stupid useless trials. All failed.
Because it is supposed to fail. 😐
I only learned it at the end of the day.5
Yesterday was the first day of my final exams. (They are scheduled this whole week) First exam was programming on paper and it went surprisingly good. I'm pretty sure i made one or two minor mistakes but overall it should work. (3 tasks: program a calculator; program a car-showcase program and explain quicksort) We had 3 hours to do this and even though i needed them i didn't feel any pressure. That was really nice. Thank you for calming me down the last days/weeks and ensuring me that i can do this.
I hope today's going as smooth. Exam of the day is networks. Wish me luck^^8
Layoffs happen all the time. But when you survive it and come back the next day and see the empty cubicles occupied by very senior devs who were really close to you and mentored you.
Had to go through this twice, 2014 and 2016. Thankfully we still meet up at Hooters every Friday and rant, and that's our version of a 'weekly'
Okay...not a rant. But my boss's boss is amazing! I've been with this company for about a year, and every time my lowly ass needs permission elevation to do something, I have to practically beg. And then I get elevated one little permission at a time. I have a presentation to the board on Tuesday, and all damn day it's been one network permission problem over the other. It's become insulting that I'm the only team member that has to beg for permission scraps. Today, they take me out to lunch and when I get back, sends an email and copies me on it basically instructing that I'm to receive near-God like permissions on the network. Quite an honor for being everyone's junior by like 20-25 years! I feel like I'm about to receive an Infinity Stone or something...best day ever!
Ok, this is my first post here...and I came here to rant - I had heard about this place, but I guess I just hadn't had a bad enough day...until today...the day I found my ec2 instance was playing hide and seek with me. I just found out that my aws billing dashboard is going to swoosh 2000rs (30$) out of my wallet. Imagine ranting about this to a layperson... ok anyway, I had taken a t2-medium (my first one ever) for a hackathon and I was just playing with the regions I guess and it somehow ended up in the ohio region. I had given IAM access to some of my teammates and they were using it. We were supposed to shutdown the instance after 1 day. The next day I check the dashboard (for N.Virginia - which is the default) and I see no running instances. I thought ok my teammates must've turned it off and I left it at that. A month after the hackathon, I login today and I have this jaw-dropping moment. I now have to pay 30$ for nothing!2
Back in the day, it was a kind of unwritten rule that you would ++ the ranter when you posted a comment on their rant... or was that just me?5
Got introduced to RLE on a rant the other day and holy shit doing more research into it and it's algorithms... How the fuck have I not known of this?!?!?!4
Not really a rant, more a proud of myself moment but the custom IVR software I built is now getting 20k calls a day and hasn't broken........
Day 2 of "I'm done regretting"
The jog was still really painful and I still thought I was going to die, but in the bright side, a little bit less than yesterday.
Finally got myself a czech copy of "The Book". Happiest day in 2017 so far 😁
How do you make yourselves happy, fellow ranters?3
I have setup site wide Google analytics events since June and the product manager only ever looks at the pageviews. I don't think he understand what a funnel even is.
Each day I hear about him wanting to increase the customers to come on our site and then do nothing about it. At least LOOK AT THE DATA
(this isn't my first rant. I had to delete the other account because it is easy to find me by the other username)16
I saw a devrant user posting something about "the cockroach" that survives in the company no matter what so I knew I had to rant about something similar. I worked with a guy and his ability to talk shit is in direct proportion to his salary. The guy watches youtube all day, searches for things to buy, goes to vacations and no one knows what he does. :)) plot twist: he just forwards ( not sends ) emails from the business to a software provider. Did I mention that he has the highest salary( don't ask how I found out ).
Anyhow, the guy is winning at life, no one gives two shits about him, he is always hiding and running from work. While writing this I'm actually amazed by his skill, how do you end up like this? He reminds me of Wally from Dilbert!2
Today has been a good day.
Woke up telling myself I should make a build for my game to see how it perform (didn't do a single one in several months). Was expecting some issues like always. But everything built on first try, on Windows and Linux (which is a fist attempt for the later).
So yea, today has been a good day 😎
As a web dev i really hate half assed solutions
Especially when I'm forced to spend time making them because some stupid sales person sold certain features that our current product doesn't support.
At the end of the day that sales guy gets a commission and I build something that will inevitably break somewhere in the future.1
So... I know this isn't a rant, in fact it's not even related to computers, but it's so epic I just have to share.
The other day at work, we ordered lunch from a local Thai chef, whom I challenged to make me a properly hot Thai style stir fry pork dish.
I think he understood, because it was just perfect. (:5
My employer forced me to do video courses and pass quizzes/tests. Questions were vague, not directly related to the video and it took me over a week to get past them.
I think i should mention, there was a month for this, but I missed the email and learned about this courses by being warned that deadline is near.
On the second day I made a userscript that stores given answers and mark the correct ones in the next attempts, so that brute-forcing would require less copy/paste.
Topics covered by the courses are a nice subject for another rant.
Actually managed to get out of bed today without snoozing my alarm.
Damn just a couple of weeks ago I usally snoozed for almost 1.5 hour with 10 minute intervals
Anyone else annoyed at them self for snoozing? And feeling bad about it for the whole day8
Certainly considering handing in my notice soon.
1. Paid minimum wage with no prospect of a raise
2. Spending £200 a month on travel
3. Traveling for almost 4 hours (70 miles) a day on bus and train
4. Promised training but nothing produced for 8 months
5. Expected to now pay for further travel
6. Not taken seriously...
Yep, need a new job in the Birmingham, UK area19
Not really a rant but a hear the word 'dump' quite often during the work day and am amazed at how few people giggle at that.2
Just wrote a rant/story about my school day, seriously spend 10 - 15 min writing it and I was just about to post it, but boom - "Unfortunately devRant has stopped"
Sometimes with good custom ROM comes unstable updates.
P.S. if you think devRant would have saved my rant, don't worry I thought that too but when I checked it, it was empty just like my devRant notifs!!2
So I got tired of dragging my behemoth 17" gaming notebook around to do my day to day web development, so I caved and got a Lenovo Yoga 720. It's very slim and light, though I'm not sure I'm completely happy with it yet.
So I figured I would ask you all here. What laptops do you feel are a decent price and are nice and portable?
Here's my need for specs (because I'm a little picky):
-8th gen i5 or i7
-8GB ram minimum (16GB preferred)
-SSD (don't care about the size, so 128GB min)
-Thin, light and compact (probably 13-14")
-$1000 budget (though I will stretch it a little)
I took a look into System76, but I don't really feel the price matches the hardware (lot of price gouging on the upgrades).34
Got a job offer as an Android Dev, signed the contract, while signing employer asked me if i am a mac or pc user. A day before my joining date got an email from him asking me to bring my mac with me on my first day. Turns out he won't be providing me with a machine to work on :).5
I wonder what it feels like to be a programmer in north korea...
1 bug, 1 day gulag?
Just kidding :)
I hope they enjoy stackoverflow & news over TOR.5
<rant>So I'm new to the having-meetings-every-waking-moment-of-the-day thing... Just wondering if anyone is supposed to get anything done??
Or are we supposed to gather more and more work to do during each meeting?
The only times I've been able to do work is when I can mute the mic or say I'm in a "lunch meeting"!!
Does this happen to everybody???
I wanted to rant but I just been moved from a governemental project in Python 2, to a shiny one on Python 3. Have a good day you too!
This rant is a 3 for 1...
1) I forgot to add to my goals:
At least a commit a day.
2) What are you guys doing right now?
I'm quite bored, so I'm looking at userfriendly comic strips...
3) Happy new year!3
bad nightmare: getting a bug on the day of deployment..
worst nightmare: getting more than 100 comments on a Rant with no ++2
how long do you guys code per day?
being a student i have now extreme difficulties in time management😐
need some advice...11
How did I only find DevRants now? How did it take me this long?
After only one weekend I already see the value of it to me.
How many times would venting to other devs during a stressful day make your day better? A lot.
It seems like this place attracts a lot of different people from a lot of different experience levels, ages, geographic locations, backgrounds, maturity levels and more...
Like any other platform, these differences can make for some difficulties and miss understandings, but overall I have seen a positive and supportive community so far.
Rant on Garth, Rant on.1
Me: okay, just gonna look on devRant for five minutes then get ready
Me: *goes to recent tab*
Me: *sees my own rant posted a day ago*
FUCKKKKK IM GONNA BE LATE WHY THE HELLL AM I STILL WRITIBG THIS OK SHIT SHIT SHTI3
Building on https://devrant.com/rants/1654019/...
It's coming along nicely, I've been working on different themes and I'm still making the tree more natural.
Next is to make the number of branches each time more random, and then I'll maybe add leaves. I might even add a day/night cycle, but we'll see once the code is further along and the automatic background updater is made.3
Super awesome day today.
1. Got up early to do a risky production deploy and it worked!
2. Three PRs approved before lunch.
3. Got some time to continue learning scala.
4. Coffee and cupcakes with some refugees and discussed work as a software engineer.
5. Tried virtual reality for the first time. Really fun.
6. Helped prepare our goals for this quarter and present them to the department.
7. Department meeting had free local craft beer and pretzels.
8. Went bouldering after work and flashed a 6c.
9. Curled up with my wife watching Netflix.
I really love my life sometimes.5
I got a co-founder for a thing I'm building.
Building this thing will only get better as all the struggles of building a startup thing get wurse.
Today, my rant friends, is a great day.
I'm looking forward to returning to Python one day in the near future.3
I am a developer at a tech company. The tester in my team refuse to test my work because he feel I don't respect him. He is a fucking idiot, so obviously I don't respect him. I can still do my job just like always, so I told the cretin it doesn't matter if I respect him or not and he doesn't need my respect to do his job.
At the end of the day I couldn't care less about his feelings. I just hope my boss doesn't fire me when he finds out.3
Wow. I've only been active for a day and I've already got over 300 +1's and a rant in the top. Thank you to the devRant community and thank you devRant for being so cool!3
Does anyone else derive great pleasure from creating quality of life/small utility programs?
So I'm learning python in between projects at work (plan on slowly moving new projects to it) and damn, my coding buddy and I have found a package/import for almost anything we can imagine. Heck, we canned ourselves laughing when we started googling random things and still found python packages that do it. I plan to use the language to automate a ton of things when I get a new PC.
Aside from that, I recently in 2 days (1 day building, 1 day bug fixing) made a tiny utility that shaves a good 5 minutes off a certain task for my colleagues at work, and in bulk use will save even more time. It's a textbox and a button only but it felt so nice to make something useful like that so quickly.7
I got really awesome wireless headphones as a prize at a hackathon.
Was actually feeling down today, then this arrived and made my day!
It made my day and inspired me to do something today(started a personal project!)
Took the day and rebuilt my home network with no major issues along the way.
Migrated to a new NAS and gave a Raspberry Pi a new life as a PiHole + DHCP.
Rant: Why can't things always go this smoothly on my projects? 😎2
I had been working on the mess of custom-written PHP ecommerce site that was my internship. I had been reworking some code for two weeks and everything worked. Time to push to prod. Because who has heard of auto-deployment (I dumped the site in Git day 1), it was a manual process to identify new/modified/deleted files.
Naturally, this process is error-prone.
Within maybe an hour, we get a call from a customer about an outrageous charge. The site reported everything correctly, but his credit card alert was a different matter.
I discovered I missed one file in my changes that needed to be updated (why I missed it is another rant). Without this file, a customer would be charged 100x the total. In this case, a $40 purchase ended up being $4,000.
In fixing the issue, I also created a rounding error of $0.18 on the next transaction (thanks whoever thought it was a good idea to store money as a decimal instead of an integer).
On the same day, I also accidentally broke reports for 4 different people and had to quickly (in an ugly manner) patch them back in and ensure correct output throughout the day.
Oh, and all this happened on a Monday.
Talk about a strong fear of getting fired from my first webdev job that day, and an interesting conversation with my carpool home.4
Well after a few really downer and shitty weeks, I think I just struck gold...
First I had trouble getting a new job but was contacted personally for a full time position as a printer and copier serviceman which entrails me getting my own company car, new phone and maybe new laptop and the same day I got a call about my phone that was getting repaired, I was expecting to pay around $400+ for the repair,. nope, the repairer paid for a new phone and gave me a brand new one back, even got the latest model revision too!
Shit turned around quick for me! :-D2
That time when you are coding and you recieve your free stickers. This is going to be an even more awesome day!
Thanks a lot team dev rant! Greetings from Argentina.
PS: yes, that's a Mario cup ;)4
Remember that one day someone says "lets make a game about a fat italian guy that save the princess from the evil big monkey by jumping some barrels and a hammer".
Do not be afraid of your own ideas, you always miss the shots that you don't take.1
Next weeks rant theme should be worst dev day.
Any how today I fucked up at a whole new level. First ran a script thinking I am deleting my local dev environment.
*An Eternity later*
That dreaded script ran on main dev server and fucked up the server used by a team of 15+ teammates. Dead.2
@dfox (this might not be the correct way to tag here, but we'll see once I post)
A few suggestions:
1. Being able to move between day, month etc. by swiping left or right
2. A web interface (to rant from a laptop/desktop)
3. Link "framing" (a-la WhatsApp, messenger, where links get a frame with a picture and description)
4. basic markdown (bold, quotes, etc. a-la Reddit. this might exist but I haven't run into it, and if it does maybe a preview window for the result would be helpful)
Really like the app, cheers!13
OMG. Just had the worst convo with my supervisor. She's a dev and she does not understand why scalability is important.
We have a really bad client who has a fucking insane amount of pages and they want to change some stuff on a few and my supervisor just said manually add it in with if satements.
I replied saying this client will want more things changed let me take the extra hlaf hour to make it scalable.
She responded no just do manually.
I wanted to get in to rant about how scalability is important but it was the end of the day and I was to tired.4
So, following on from yesterday's rant about the PM...
I was planning on going in today and asking for a meeting. As soon as the founder walks in he pills me aside and "politely" asks me to "keep my mood up around colleagues" as they "look up to me."
Clearly the PM has said something.
So I just politely go about my day, ignore everything and get to my work whilst solemnly wishing I could murder everyone here...2
CTO: "We have a project that is the top most priority get it done"
CTO: "We have some tickets logged for another project get them fixed this is of the highest priority"
CTO: "I want a new feature in another project I want this done now It is top priority!"
Next day, Client comes in CTO shows him around
CTO: "You are still working on this!"
... Arg, its as if the guy thinks giving something a top priority gets it done instantly3
Taking first steps in Express.js. It's in general the first web framework i've learned so the struggle was greater.
While I was creating a web app, i've noticed that suddenly all of the routes were redirecting to the 404 error page. I was looking for the cause of this issue for an hour just to find this:
route.get ('/ ', ...);
So it seems that just one space sign wasted 1 hour of my day.
Btw, it's my first rant there so 👋 to everyone :)4
Does anyone know what the **day-to-day** differences are between working in IT (banks, hedge funds) vs tech (Google, Facebook, Netflix).
In my mind, I see Hell and Heaven. And there's a giant wall in between called "technical interviews + algorithms and data structures".
I'm on the Hell side... And not sure if I should climb the wall 😔
Is the wall even that big?8
So they give us a stress ball if a rant gets that many "upvotes". I find that really stressful, waiting and waiting.. And never get there. In the end of the day we are stressed af and with no stress ball 😂.
But hey, who da hell get stressed for this little? We devs are already stress free...3
Rant about my stupidity.
For a full day I've been trying to get the desktop environment on my fresh Arch installation working(on a spare laptop).
Guess what? I was running startx instead of startxfce4 and wondering why isn't xfce4 starting.
Guess I have more such stupid acts to be encountered.3
-----------Jr Dev Fucked by Sr Dev RANT------
Huge data set (300X) that looks like this :
( Primary_key, group_id,100more columns) .
Dataset to be split in records of X sized files such that all primary_key(s) of same group_id has to go in same file.
Sde2 with MS from Australia, 12 years of 'experience' generates an 'algo'. 70% Test case FAILED.
I write a bin packing algo with 100% test case pass, raises pull request to MASTER in < 1 day. Same sde2 does not approve, blocking same day release.
|-_-| What the fuck |-_-| Incompetent people getting 2x my salary with <.5x my work2
How does everyone stop themselves getting headaches from staring at a screen everyday, all day? Migraines run in my family, so when I get a headache it's always a migraine. When I get one it stops me dead. I'm unable to do anything until it goes away. My best cure right now is excederin. It works great but I want to see what you guys have to say.12
Fuuuuuuuuuuck..... why is CSS so fucking ASS when it comes to working the way it is supposed to. Why would someone create such a broken tool.
Thats all, have a good day.3
I finally found something to rant about! So what happened is that I am participating in the Digital Ocean competition (I need to do 5PR's). So I find a report with a lot of scripts. I decide to contribute and write a discord webhook API (send messages through a webhook). The next day, the guy goes "No thanks :)" and closes the PR. Words cannot express how triggered I am. I ask him if I can make anything else out of exasperation (I did not intend to do anything for him anymore, I can't explain why I did that), he tells me no...
I spent a few hours making a VS Code plugin to improve my work flow, published it on the marketplace a few days ago so that I can easily install it everywhere. But to my surprise that shit gets about 7 installs a day! I don't get why. I don't have clear instructions on how to use it anywhere.
But hey, I'm not complaining! 😁4
Some question for ya creators
What was the first 10 rants here?
How many users are in devRant? (including ghost usernames)
Server costs how much in a day?
How did ya guys met together?
P.S. I remember you two had a building with the devrant logo in the top. Where is the location? (@trogus)9
I’m really loving being a contractor and working for myself.
Currently waiting for the client to order the next lot of work, so that means today I got to go out, go swimming, walk down the seafront and just generally have a nice day out in the sun with friends and family.
I can’t believe I didn’t try this whole remote contractor thing sooner.5
Rant at myself for being a moron.
Manually tried moving some InnoDB stuff around on a local server and corrupted a load of databases, with no backups since June 28th. Spent all day yesterday trying to recover with no luck 😑
Lesson learned: need to backup databases more regularly. Any good tools?3
Our product owners asked us to be careful that no two developers in our team should take the same day off, if possible.
Then the PO themselves joined a company trip on the same day without informing us(we can see their calendar but it is very appreciated if they inform us during our daily meetings) and on the day we needed to ask them about something important just few days before release.
All these communication tools and yet there is still a communication breakdown happening. WTF?2
who else hates recruiters/ recruiting companies? I have been looking for work a while now and my inbox is inundated with "senior" level roles asking for 7+ years experience in every language imaginable. I have only been at this going on 3 years now and definitely don't consider myself senior by any means but do aspire to get there some day. But how the fuck am I supposed to do that if no one will give me experience?? Rant over11
Stack Overflow is a great resource for all sorts of programming hints and tips, information and...sadly, desinformation. But if you want to comment on something someone's said you need 50 reputation points. How to achieve that when you need rep points to do anything that could earn you rep points? It's a catch 22 for newcomers that are like totally excluded from any discussions at SO which is more sort of a read-only community to me. This is where devRant shines. Anyone can rant about anything and comment on anyone's rant. Some rants and comments are stupid, and some are great. In the end of the day, freedom of speech is a great thing.11
long time lurker and finally decided to create an account and contribute to this awesome community.
I been slowly entering in the field of software development it's been a great journey and still have a lot to learn.
Have a nice day!1
Just went an entire day at work without a computer.
I know we usually rant about meaningless meetings and waste of time conversations but they are great for avoiding work while seeming very busy and productive.1
Well, I've started work a few days ago, and I've got a rant for you as well.
Anyone here ever hear of laughter therapy?
Well my day was normal enough, rattling through the training material, and work was holding an appreciation day with some dogs, cakes, and a crazy laughing woman. She was the instructor for the laughter therapy.
So thanks to my newly found "try everything" mentality, and a senior dev dragging me along to fill seats, I was stuck in a room filled with other devs, being told to smile and laugh even if I was forcing myself to do it. So I did, we went through increasingly embarrasing and insane-looking exercises (e.g. Mime pouring and drinking a milkshake while laughing), until we were told to lie on the floor and belly laugh for 5 minutes.
Anyone here play/see "We Happy Few"? I was stuck standing next to the crazy sow, who looked one bad day away from beating everone in the room to death with a cricket bat!
As is customary for me, have a cute snek.4
|Ѱ> = ½|(rant)> + ½|(!rant)>
I had a rough day, lots of things to do, the heat was as usual unbearable (I'm more quickly hindered by heat than other people, I'm feeling good in low temperatures), I had to go to the groceries, my parents' dog (which I'm keeping for the week for reasons) was particularly annoying today, and had a particularly full bladder every two or three hours, and *gross alert* my weak af asshole is one more time hurting because of the heat and I don't know what.
Then I sit in front of my laptop, and before powering it on I let out a big sigh. My girlfriend ears it, stops working and asks if I want a quick shoulders massage. I can't say no, she knows it...
At the exact moment she began, I pushed on "power on". There couldn't be a more perfect timing : as soon as it powers on, Windows starts (WHERE IS MY F*CKING GRUB ? I WANTED TO BOOT LINUX, I HAVE WORK TO DO) and starts his long ass updates, restarting 3 times in the process. I must admit that without Ms. Brosyl applying her sweet hands on my tense shoulder muscles, I would have gone crazy and flipped every table on sight.
That was a rant, and not a rant at the same time!1
Fuck... This is not how I wanted my Saturday to go..
My Mac restart after update took more than an hour (check my previous rant), went into not responding mode, then got aborted, ultimately ending up with a corrupted disc. Now, not booting up at all...
Into recovery mode now and trying all other options..
Hope my time machine did a good job, else this is gonna be a heartbreaking day !!!2
That automation thing with NASA I was ranting about yesterday finally worked. Granted, they posted a pic today instead of a video.
So, assuming it's a true Pic of the Day, my wallpaper gets updated at 4 AM. Maybe they saw my rant? haha5
!dev but definitely a rant.
Ordered a lovely new UHD HDR tv for the family on Monday.
MFW I see the courier is Hermes (notoriously bad).
It arrived today.
Any guesses as to the condition it was in?
Yep. Lovely crack on the screen.
Took all day to clear it up with Amazon.
And the best they could bloody do was a refund, but I have to organise the collection and pay for that (which they said they’ll refund).
True its a two days old story but now ReactJs 16 is out, and license is now MIT.
this is a good way to start my day :)
So on the last day before launch our latest feature I'm informed that a requirement was missed and it had to be implemented before go live otherwise the business didn't want the feature. The feature in question was pretty drastic and basically required a scheme rewrite, new tables, etc. So I spent the entire day making the change.
Thankfully I pushed the whole project for good code coverage. Therefore, all I had to do when I was done was run all of our tests and make sure they passed. *warm fuzzy feelings*
!rant, throw everything away
When you spend 9 hour at work, 2 hours in that fucking exploded bus, tries to spend time with friends and family, spend enough time with that one special person, try to sleep descently and manage to work on your personal projects during that two hours in the bus, and that each day, each week, the whole year.
You need a lot of motivation!
But when today I loose two months of work because of a hardware problem and that (because I don't have internet in the bus) I didn't backup on GitHub , I just have lost all motivation and will!
I just can't anymore!
Work Rant, again.
Working on a project, it has a messages feature.
Currently it supports text messages and images.
The guy before me had to leave, so I was put in charge on this project, to develop it.. all alone...
Project Manager : "Please add PDF support to messages"
Me : "Sure its an easy task".
1 day later:
-Starts working on that feature
-PDF files can now be sent.
-Looks at the sent messages-
-Message is there but I... I cant see the PDF file-
Moments later I discover the entire system is non-modular... hard-coded images only support.
Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now.
On top of having a good day, aka I didn't spend hours on 1 bug as usual... my devRant stickers made it! Thanks @dfox & Tim :)2
Today was a good day. I finally managed to wire up the entire backend system for my portfolio using headless Drupal 8, Node and React. And it happend after work!
Took me a week, and I'm new to the techniques. :D1
Tl;Dr: I ate shit for 3 months and finally got rewarded.
If you read my last rant you might remember that for the last 3 months I was tasked with a formal QA of some hundred word documents. (Checking headers, footers etc.)
This is almost over (8 days left)... Finally...
Today I had to present the work I did to the head of IT. The presentation went fairly well and at the end she offered me that she would be willing to get me a job the city where I'll be moving to study.
I have only met her 4 times during the year that I worked there but someone or something must have convinced her to care.
So it's seems like I'm not going to have to bother with all the usual HR bullshit and will have the opportunity for a steady income during the next 3 years.
Today was a good day.
rant && !rant
so my company just relocated to another part of the city.
it took about 2-3 months of searching for a space till the management found a suitable place. then about one more month for settling on the details (price, when we move, etc). then another month of just waiting for the space to be ready ...
the actual move took 1 day ... just one day ...
so the new place
- is better placed (for me at least)
- has lots of nice pubs / restaurants around for lunch or just relaxing after work
- has great views from every office
- lots of extra space for everyone
- ok people (so far) working at the other companies in the same space
- everyone seems so much more relaxed and easygoing and happy at the new place
- the ac is still not working (32 degrees Celsius outside, and our office is facing the sun almost all day)
- for the first days we were lacking blinds at the windows
- office was full of little stinky bugs and they still keep showing up when we open up the windows
So, overall pretty great ... so (rant part??) WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG TO MOVE HERE ??? (both before it was decided to move, about 4 years at the old place, and after)
also, relating to the topic of the week ... nothing code related was learned, much was gained, and a life lesson was obtained: if you don't like something, just change it as soon as you can
I was getting headaches from looking at the comp screen all day, but what can you do when it's your job? A friend told me about these glasses you can buy specifically for people at a comp 8+ hrs a day. I gave in and bought a pair, and now, no more headaches! Thank you Gunnar glasses! 👓 😃1
Vocabulary for the day.
Screed - An abusive rant is called a Screed.
Usage - I'mma screed the shit outta dem pathetic species of blood sucking parasites AKA dickhead project managers who do dem (developerEstimatedTime/2) quick maths.
Recently I bought a Moto Z2 Play, and it really it's an amazing phone, it includes the battery mod, and given than with my average usage, it lasts for me for day and a half, I'm more than happy :D3
Damn, since my last rant where I was complaining about me having big troubles coding stuff when asked by an exercise or given instructions, I feel like I've made huge progress now, by sticking a bit to my "at least 5 exercises a day" routine, now as soon as I code, it comes to me more and more naturally.
I'm so glad I can see the practice really paying off, even thanks to a simple function working great at the first compile makes me feel warm inside even tho it ain't gonna last long.2
When you are asked to implement a fix for a colleague and do so.
Then a half day later you see another colleague change in the git repo, that's using more lines and is harder to read but basically does the same as your version
Just spent my whole day to implement a VSCode extension and as soon as I finished implementing it, I came to know that the feature already exists and only requires a config change. FML, WoD.3
Yes this is kind of a rant and will probably open a can of worms (Although I would hope people are civil with this)
Why the hell is the gaming community so volatile when it comes to discussing someone personal gaming platform whether it be a gaming PC, Xbox, play station or switch, I myself own a gaming pc yet I will choose to play a game on my xbox one any day of the week, I use my pc for mainly media consumption when programming and just generally for internet use.
Just curious if there are any developers on here who share my view that a platform is just a platform?5
I know people like to rant about Apple removing ports, but it was a great day for a great cable standard yesterday!1
So since starting my new role I have had nothing to rant about. That changed today.
HR waited til one day past payroll cut off to issue my paperwork. Meaning I get paid at my old rate this month and then get back pay in my November pay slip.
Those mother cunting bastards waited one day extra to screw me for the whole month.
I've been waiting since the end of September for these twat monkeys to get off their rotting arses and sort this and they do it one day late.
It's a good job that I don't know where they are located, nothing good would be waiting for them if I did.
As this got cut from the tags:
HR please kindly go find a rotting puss filled dick and shove it up your lazy fucking arse you pitiful wastes of human meat bags.1
I don't want to seem like a huge noob and a douche... but I spent like 5 hours the other day working on a bash script prompting you if you want to delete each individual user on the system (keep in mind that I'm fairly new to bash) and when I got the code correct... holy shit... I felt like a fucking god.2
Not so much of a rant but recommendation.
Have been listening to a completely epic Spotify playlist all day today whilst coding - "RetroWave / Outrun".
It's really good for keeping my concentration :)10
By far the most stupid email I ever got was a feedback to a documentation paper that I wrote.
The email's author went on a rant for long paragraphs, suggesting how the content should be structured, written, pictures suggestions ("something like a box with arrows" kind of description) only to realize, I guess in the middle of writing the email, that my approach was much more user friendly, easier to understand and to follow.
So, after this looong rant the email basically ends with "I see what you did there; forget what I wrote before. Cheers."
My brain stopped for that day. It couldn't handle it.2
I know excel is not a programming language, but it is what I deal with everyday.
My immediate boss is Japanese(Japanese company).
Our boss will occasionally add to the shared spreadsheet without telling us. We find out the next day by discovering that other sheets that reference to it are waaaay off. Or the big one is the mass amount of #ref all over the sheet.
I mean come on man, at least look around the large sheet first!5
I've always been wondering why do tech companies need everyone to have a strong grasp of algos and data structures?
I've been coding most of my life but didn't get a CS degree so ended up in IT but I kind of want to get into a tech company as my thinking is the quality of code much higher (I spend a lot of time cleaning up other people's code and prod issues over the years...), I've been learning Algo/DS but when I see those technical questions on CareerCup, I go WTF.... it's this the kind of problems you guys do every day?6
Rant a day keeps frustration away.
If rant is not good then...
I suck at rhymes anyway.
Before rant (introduction): I'm the kind of dev that is a procrastinator by default, it takes me a huge amount of effort to avoid this bad habit.
So, I'm going on vacation next week and finished all my shores on Monday. As I'm about to go on vacation, my team leader is avoiding giving me work so that it doesn't stay half way when I leave.
The problem is, this is the third day that I arrive at the office knowing that I will be there for 8 hours wasting my time not doing shit and looking at the screen!!!
The worst part is that if I get this bad habit going, it will stay and I will start to procrastinate a lot if I don't work to do fast5
I LOVE flexible working hours (a.k.a. flextime). I don't know how you feel about it but not being forced to be somewhere at a specific time relaxes and improves my day hugely.5
Just for blatant curiosity; how many people would ++ this just to help me get a stressball to get through this day.
So today I woke up to a message that my jobs webserver was down; and that all personal webpages for the Uni went down with it. We had no idea why or how it went down but eventually someone got it up- just in time for our Proxmox server to go down; which runs our new web server (thankfully it's not live yet), our print server, our PXE server, and more... Loving today. Such stress. Very shit.
We have a memo on the window "Watch your FPMs" (fucks per minute)1
Recently my grades haven't been so great and looking at what I do all day it's not hard to see why. I haven't had much inspiration do make anything or learn anything, everytime I open vscode it feels so boring. I've decided I'm going to take a break from coding and like tech in General for a bit, maybe a week or so to get all my school stuff figured out and all.i want to get back into reading, I haven't read a book and enjoyed since 6th grade almost 4 years ago. I hope I come back with some motivation though. might actually keep dev rant though.
It always happen
I always think of great game song melodies, and every single day, when i just hum aloud, there is definitely 1 good one. Many times i have a recorder or my phone, but sometimes, i dont which makes me hum all the way to my cell phoneand when it try to record it, i forget the melody making me so frustrated....
Xcode 9 is now officially out, will I be writing new types of rants OR will I be saying sorry to Apple for all those Xcode hate rants I wrote.
Tomorrow is a new day :)4
This is a big thing I think. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm overweight and this job keeps me at a desk for long periods of time.
I ended up with health issues from a combination of a bad diet, a staph infection years ago, and not being active. So I've made a commitment to start walking - at least a mile a day.
I'm using Pacer + Apple Health on iOS to track my progress. So far, combined with a $50 bluetooth scale I picked up on Amazon, I'm losing weight. I also noticed that when I switched my mile walk to my lunch break, I'm coming back to my work way more refreshed.
I hope to keep this up and I've found the gamification of having apps track my progress is a definite plus.
Anyone else have any healthy habits of "health hacks" they've found?4
Is it just me or does everybody on this website hate Android Studio and Gradle? I read like one rant a day where someone is whining about the slowness of Gradle or the ram usage of Android Studio2
My best office prank by far was at my high school. First, I bought a USB rubber ducky and programmed it to backdoor my friends school computer with netcat and a batch file that ran in the background so that I could connect to his computer any time inconspicuously. The next day, I injected his computer with the drive when he went to turn in some papers.
You should've seen the look on his face when his computer started having conversations with the teacher.
Today I wanted to finish a feature in some Python code I. Working on instead I scope creeped myself a bunch times adding "other cool features" and refactoring working and readable code that didn't need refactoring. Oh and learning about random things on SO and finally giving up on making any more progress for the day and reading devrant.
ADHD Self:"Coding is love, coding is life. Plus I'm getting paid."
Responsible self: "Wait no, go home sleep, spend time with your wife"
Remembering self:" she's out with friends"
Responsible self: "ah, carry on, she's probably spending more money than you're making"
Hi my named bluescreen and I'm addicted to coding ....
Feel like I should be at some kind of Coders AA meeting .....
I'm having a few days off work, this is my 3rd day and I'm already twitching because I've not got my daily fix of coding (wife won't let me near a computer when I'm on holiday)
I've never had any kind of addiction except coding. I feel really uncomfortable not doing anything, coding is my job and hobby.
I normally come on here to rant / read posts but today I'm browsing just on the off chance that I see some code ....
I need help ......6
Today is the day, i'll finish up all the contract work that sits on my desk, cash in the money and finish up the free website i made for a befriended gamedev.
I've been sooo angry about other humans over the week but escaping into development and helping the few friendly humans out there is making me calm again.
If anyone of you feels down, grab a tee, clean your desk, take a bath and just start coding silly things, or try to help a mate in need. :-)1
Not a rant, just the completion of a very demanding and interesting task for this week.
Wrote a whole data scheme for this enterprise app my company is developing. Very proud of it, since it has a very restricted size, multiple layers of encryption and data verification, several user types with different requirements, and it all has to be rock solid in an offline environment.
The punchile is...I enjoyed writing the documentation for the whole package more than I should, I guess...spent the whole day being very thorough and documenting every member, function, constructor and exception.
Windows sux (still, much more usable for me than Linux on a day-to-day / fixing-my-neighbors'-tech basis), but Linux Subsystem on Windows...?
I just found out about it, and installed Ubuntu on my main Win10 laptop...
I'm not even mad - this is awesome!11
Believe it or not, I actually had a great day of development today and don't feel the need to rant about anything!
It was one of those rare days when everything went well, and instead of running into road blocks, you actually learn about things that open new doorways, and the one thing I did struggle with received an answer on Stack Overflow within minutes that was both exactly what I was hoping for and as a bonus, not even condescending.
Dang, dev doesn't get much better than this! ☺️
So, not really a rant. The opposite in fact. With all this frustration about GDPR lately, GUESS WHAT FUCKING HAPPENED?! My domains (at one registrar so far) where all made private because of the law. GOOD DAY!2
Why is it a faux pas to have a beer for breakfast but having wine, champagne or coffee isn't?
They're all delicious morning stimulants and should be treated exactly alike no matter the time of day. This type of discrimination should end now.
PSA: it's national donut day and if you get a coffee at Dunkin Donuts you can get a free donut!2
Yes / no ?
If yes, how many cups a day? What type do you fancy?
If no, any other ways you energize yourself up?
If buying from coffee shop I like to order flat whites, otherwise a lil skimmed milk and that's all.
Sorry if this has been discussed before17
So it's 2018, I thought let's start working with Android Studio on Ubuntu. [Due to some guy who posted his CPU usage on a very heated rant of same issue]
I realized it's fucking mess(/shit) and you dare not keep any browser open in back/fore-ground. Now, my entire system is stuck.
Ruined the first day man.
Ah, npm... Lots of packages use ES6 syntax because it's nice to write, and then transpile to node-compatible code either with CI or a precommit script. Just spent a whole day trying to figure out what was wrong with my project, when it turns out I just had to tell webpack to ignore node_modules *except* for this specific package. Sigh.2
God damnit, I'm 20 and already got a burn out due to work (fast food job) and school.
I go to school 5 days a week 8 hours a day and I work every weekend 8 hours a day only so I can afford my study better and to be able to afford my internship to Japan next year.
The worst thing is I'm in a endless loop because if I stop with school I need to work full time to pay off my school loan and if I stop my work I can't pay for part of my school and my internship.
If anyone has any tips for me what to do before this ends badly I will gladly hear them2
I am learning C# and devRant helps me keep my concentration and attention in check during the day. Helps me stay in the zone longer and interacting with a developer community helps me adopt a mindset which helps me absorb a different way of thinking which is crucial for somebody that comes from an "opposite" field - art and design. I would not have been able to have this community "in real life" otherwise.
+ You guys are soo nice, despite the ranting concept of the app :)
Last rant update:
I won't have to take a leave after all and won't have to force myself to a wasted day full of useless awkward interactions or roaming around in a park.
That moment I wonder why I haven't wrote any rant for a long time and suddenly realized that it's because I've been coding only about a couple hours a week for the last months.
Basically, I finished all my computer related class and all that is left to finish (before I can get my diploma) are basic courses like philosophy and literature (which at least are interesting).
Now pretty much every day I wake up and I crave to code but I just don't have time to 😐
Ah a Monday rant. How wonderful a day.
I cleared a project with my boss how dynamic each section on a frontpage should be. This and this needs to be dynamic on each page load. All in the beginning of the project.
Now in the end, he changes his opinion by writing to me in Slack. "Remember, that this section needs to automatically draw X from this other page."
Now I have to redo it, since I made it as static content since that is what was asked of me. Now he blames me for why I never did it correctly in the first place.
Damn Google, Damn Google Play, Damn Adsense, Damn Admob...
So finaly uploaded my first app to the Playstore. took 5 minutes to make, 25 to ad an Admob module, and a day to get the ad to show...
Now I have to wait 6 hours for my new id (cause I chose the wrong kind of ad) to show and know If it will show on the App...
Luckly The App only has one download so far... mine lol4
This is a follow up rant to "my little story"
I have a much better relationship with my family.
Additionally, I am teaching my mother to use Linux, every day she gets better and better :)
In the end, it's a story with a happy ending. I feel good, I feel stronger!
P.S. I have changed, I still struggle to show emotions as I don't want to get hurt.2
Originally a comment, but thought it made a good rant.
My experience with Amazon so far... (I live in the colony known as Puerto Rico)
2011: Can no longer get free shipping on books. Apparently, we could before because of a "bug"
2015: Your Prime membership no longer gets you 2 day shipping. Only standard shipping.
2017: Free shipping 3-7 days? Now it takes 3 weeks to a 4+ weeks. (Packages get here faster without Prime for some reason)
2018: Tax of 11.5 when buying directly from Amazon.9
I can remember a while ago, I went to a meetup, and listened to some guys speaking about angular 2.
And I thought good for them! One day I might get proficient enough to speak about something before this many people, while actually knowing the topic well enough for it.
Today, I held a presentation before 70+ guys about Vue & Quasar framework at the exact same place. Wasn't flawless ofc, but they said I pretty much nailed it.
I'll treasure it as a great accomplishment for years to come. Love my job! 🙂
At my school we use iPads (I don't know why) and the teachers can see what's on your screen, lock you inside an app, block apps/basically everything, lock/shut down your iPad, uninstall apps and they can even see what's your location. It sucks ass, but with my "professional" hacking skills I figured out a way to hack the system. If I use a VPN, for some reason they can't do anything to my iPad. I'm still waiting for the day my school is going to ditch iPad's an buy us laptops, but at least I can sleep good at night without having my teacher doing stuff to my iPad.
(I have a ton of other things I don't like about my school, and would love to rant about, but I don't want this rant to be 5000 pages long)5
"It was a slow day at work and another intern suggested finding a way to send messages discretely between our computers on the local network.
To accomplish this I chose any true programmer’s favorite tools: excel sheets and VBA."
(!rant && happiness) * 2
yesterday I got back from a nice trip I had, and ON THAT SAME DAY I got my new Moto G5 and my hacktoberfest stuff!! :D I managed to install a custom ROM and root it on the same day :)
PS: anyone with the G5 can recommend me some Oreo ROMs that are good? THX4
What did you do in life before you got into computers/development?
I was mostly a nolife gamer who could play video games 12 hours a day. I was also obsessed with History.
Loved also Philosophy, Politics, Theology, Geography, Biology, Arts and Literature.2
Okay I've commented on multiple people's post already but I've decided to write a rant on it.
GOD I hate C++. For our software architecture minor we have to develop a game with only C++ and SDL and it's been one big freaking nightmare.Where almost every freaking language I've worked with has a proper way to add third party libraries most of them in C++ don't even fucking work after spending half a day. I know a lot of you guys love programming in C++, but it's been the language I've been struggling the most with in four years of university. Unbelievable. Fuck it's freaking pointers and all it's bullshit.5
The joys of returning from my annual leave..
My contributions after just being back from a 7-day leave.. 27 in total.. PR's, issues, bug fixes, feature fixes, requested features,..
Feels good tho.. It was a productive day today and we made the weekly update! :D
( Yes, I pushed commits while on vacation :D )2
At the end of the day...does the end consumer REALLY give a shit about what language you program in? As long as the app fucking does what it's supposed to right? I feel like this is a never ending rant for me because it seems like programmers will never understand that it doesn't matter as long as the end consumer / client is happy.2
Feeling very optimistic today.
Set up in a quiet library with no other humans around. This is going to be a productive damn day!
Gonna learn to do some cool stuff I've never done before, and make some headway on some things I've been neglecting for a while.
Got a big thing of coffee, lunch squared away.
Feels like the world is at my fingertips.
(this has been a positive rant)
Today was a good day:
- made good steps forward with one of my personal projects, learning a few things along the way
- squashed a bunch of bugs
- almost finished some heavy reorg of the git repo for another project
- killed like 4 mosquitoes (those things are annoying af!)
Today was a good day!
Just been told that my company needs to make my position redundant - and I have my wedding coming up!! Awful day... Anyone need a seasoned developer?1
Im a java dev in my day job (in a bank) and a real estate broker(on the side) as well... Im planning to create my real estate website from scratch. should i do it on java(spring) or other language?
I know php and ruby too. I had plenty of php projects and i had one ror project 5yrs ago.
which hosting do you recommend. *cheap is better for i am just starting real estate broker.9
Honestly thinking really seriously about deleting facebook, as it occupies a good portion of my day with its scrolling up and down.. However I am bit scared that I am going to miss out on like friend's stuff (or people that I know a bit closer), news and all that.. Has anyone done it and can provide with his/her experience on how to tackle this?8
In my country the law says that you get paid sick day after the 3rd consecutive sick day.
Meaning that if you where sick 2 days in a row you won't be paid.
In your opinion:
In the yearly terms update talk.
Is it acceptable to ask the company to pay from the first sick day ?
( It's allowed by law and a lot of companies acctually does it)3
Just a simple rant.
Since when do programmers need to fuck around trying to get client server installs working... pissing around in IIS all day when all I want to do is write a bit of code.
Today was a good day.
Was taken to a meeting room to have a meeting booked that was booked way in advance with my client from Greece and a local client (they work together). After getting to know me and talk about some machine learning solutions I can implement in the future products I'll work on they ended the meeting with a "by the way, we are giving you a meal for two that you can take as a company expense. To have a good time with your girlfriend".
Man feels good to be appreciated 😭😭
*Wipes tear from eye*1
After 6 weeks of VBA programming I was given a small side task (webcrawl, get data, parse into SMALL and I'm glad to say I have it finished with the day. This being my first ever python script I'm a little bit proud of myself. It's not clean, or nice, but it works as intended and can easily be reused.
So, finally decided to write my first rant.
I finished today a function that takes the generated week calendar of a WordPress plugin and gives the user a nice print layout.
Problem: The plugin doesn't use the database for it's calendar, only for the events in the calendar. I had to write really unefficent code in jQuery(ajax) and PHP and additionally create a new table. Finally completed the code for printing out a selected day, the current week and a timespan that can be defined, every exception and input is now handled correctly .
Such a great feeling to be finally done with this 4000 rows code.
I hope that I will never again have to create a workaround for such a not-developer-friendly plugin.
Why do clients always want to use such plugins?!5
New day, new rant...
Yesterday was this: https://devrant.com/rants/1121939/...
So my daughter feels better, and I am getting ready for work, but alas, now my son has a fever.
I'm thinking having children and programming don't get along together...2
Sat for most of the day with the work experience kid trying to explain how to debug, I couldn't even find how to make it error we tried a bunch of solutions. Different ways to get to the certain page and even tried older browsers. Still nothing! Trying to explain something to someone when u kinda just do it or don't really understand how it all works yourself is quite a task. Boss found the fix in 15 minutes
Back when i was in college, I developed a RAT. Best 4 months of programming.
It was time to test it. so I got couple of friends who were very good at getting good grades but knows nothing about programming or how computer stuff works.
So I got into their PCs. GOD, from that day onwards I didn't have to do anything except to change the name on the assignments.
My first Rant/Story
One year ago I was told I'll be working on a Magento 2 project.
I was told it's great you'll see it's so much better then Magento 1 (at that time I didn't even know what Magento is or what it's used for).
Now one year later, a day doesn't pass that I don't discover something new in it to hate. Every day there is something new that doesn't make any sense at all. But I found my way to live with it.. at least it isn't boring haha
That day (today) when I posted at devrant that a program that i wrote was shown in a movie and the only reaction was the comment that this must be a joke.
Then I deleted the rant.
Thank you for the intense day!10
Gimp and Inkscape vs Adobe
I don't want to make people angry, but maybe one day I'll be able to go back to numeric painting a little. So I was wondering what is the problem with Gimp, Inkscape and the others?13
I dunno if this is a rant or an anti-rant, but for some reason, Assembly and low-level development hardly ever tick me off. It absolutely dumbfounds me how what many regard as the most frustrating and difficult ways of programming a binary digital computers is just so enjoyable. I spend hours per day teaching myself C and GNU Assembly and how it works with little actually getting done. It just rarely gets frustrating enough to rant about. Ladies and gentlemen I think I have found my calling!
devRant design suggestions go where ?
I was looking at a message thread the other day and noticed a classic problem occurred:
Which resulted in the discussion coming to an end as all the nice-non-troublemakers left.
Owing to the, different design of the system here, I think the following may help to solve that issue:
The user who posts a rant, is given moderation powers for that rant, which consist of:
Ability to delete posts.
Ability to silence a specific user from posting any messages to that thread, eg. add them to a blacklist.
Ability to add users to a whitelist, so only those users can post a message to that thread, and everyone else is automatically blacklisted.
Option to allow blacklisted users to post messages that first have to be approved by the moderator of the thread.
This could allow someone who posts a rant the ability/power to silence troublemakers, yet still allow non-disruptive posts of theirs to be posted if need be.
To fence off a discussion to a select few once things have got going, and to stop gate crashers from ruining a good run.
I've seen this kind of thing work well in other systems for many years.13
This is a happy rant (if there is such a thing)
I love it when you struggle with something for like a whole day, then when you go back to it the day after and figure it out in about 30 minutes...2
"This vendor system is broken and we need the data in its DB. Here's a report used to use from it. Build a new report in SSRS that we can use to pull out all the records."
+1 day tearing apart their data warehouse to find where things are.
+1 day duplicating their sample report
"Well, you did a good job duplicating what we had, but we want something that will pull every single bit of possibly related information that's in the system, and not just what was on the report we gave you."
this is not a rant.. more like the opposite of rant.. I want to share my overwhelming joy.. that is.. finally receiving my preview for AWS EFS!!!!! I must have applied for this about 8 times! And only today, do I get my prayers answered! Today is going to be a good day! :D2
After a long and exhausting progress that feels like it took days! (maybe a day lol). I came to the conclusion that StoryBoard is probably one of the biggest pains in the universe. I tried to center a UIImage View for an eternity to work both with landscape and portriat and continued to get vaying results with no actual pattern whatsoever.... One day I woke up and there was actually more textfields than were originally put on...... wahhhhh?
Within this eternity I decided that my only hope against losing all sanity and bashing my head against a keyboard screaming "#$%# you Xcode!" was to do the UI in AutoLayout Programmatically. Took me 1 hour.... thats it... Just one. Instant love. haha
Okay Im done now. Have a great day devRanters!
You know I used to be fucked up in almost every aspect of life: academically, socially, financially etc. But I am happy I am able to fight back. After my college semester exams finished, I am so happy to enjoy such a great social life. Like I can go and hangout each and every day and night, whereas earlier I would be in my room all day and night, infact even my neighbors would question my existence. But now its so much fun to hangout, feels really great. :')
Think I'm being punished here...
first, the windows 10 update screen showed up... waited for that shit to finish... once finished, I thought, "that wasn't bad..." Then, THIS next screen shows up... "you've got to be kidding me!" So, it's punishment for not having opened the laptop in a while. :P
Yeah, it will be a wish come true, when Microsoft figures out how to do all this in the background... or something... so it's not painful to wait for updates to complete.
End of rant for the day.2
My MacbookPro won't shutdown fully. Also while on sleep mode, my apps automatically gets closed for auto shutdown (which will be prevented by iTerm's dialogue box for session saving).
I tried clearing SMC & PRAM multiple times now.
Am from southern India and the temperature here varies between 28 - 35. And my usage is heavy - approx. 13+hrs a day. 'Pro' is meant for heavy usage right?
And I dont usually shutdown my MBP I simply closes the lid, is that a problem? Have you guys experienced such an issue? If so, how do you overcome?
Am concerned about it, gimme ur usage patterns / tips to solve this..1
Spent half a day trying to setup a proper javadoc aggregation mechanism for a multi module gargle project. Urgh.. Why isn't there a good plugin to do this?
Can someone help me if they are aware of an existing plugin that works for gargle to do this?
Tried nexus aggregator for gradle. Doesn't work
So the other day at my company we were talking about what we were going to talk at the IT Week in my former University. I was giving some ideas and talked about what other company's talked about and what was interesting for the students to hear.
While we were in the subject my colleagues searched some of the company's I've mentioned. We discovered that one of those company's had a Happiness Manager.
That was the first time I've heard of such an occupation. Like, is this a thing? An occupation to make other coworkers happy/ensure their happiness?
Two weeks ago we delivered four parts from a request containing about 30 minor developments to ease general every day operations.. this week my boss demanded a specified fallout report about how those cut our expenses and costs, how many percentage those four of the total amount of savings all 30 developments would save and whatnot.
ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME!? They've been in prod for ONE god damn week and the intended operations are not even launched yet! How about you go and CHILL THE FUCK DOWN!? I understand that whole part about growing business and getting it to stay alive, but you sir.. you.. GAAAH!!
Piggy backing off an earlier rant about Linux. Let's talk about time wasted fixing Linux.
One time for me was I couldn't get Ubuntu to boot. Whenever it booted through UEFI it would go straight to the EFI bash like command line boot screen, not allowing me to access Ubuntu.
I tried for almost a full day to fix it, Googling solutions, resetting my BIOS and fixing Boot using a Ubuntu Live USB.
In the end I found it was an issue with setting my filesystem as XFS. I reinstalled using EXT4 and it booted right up. Must've been some sort of bug. Strange because XFS boot worked with Fedora. A day wasted trying to set up Ubuntu.7
Suggestions for a good mechanical keyboard < $100.
I got a very cheap basic one for my home office and it's amazing to type on! It's very loud so I don't want to bring it to work and it was pretty cheap so I'm not sure how it will hold up to 8-10 hours of programming a day. I'd like to get one for the office, as a treat to myself for my promotion, but most of the suggestions I've gotten so far have been to drop $160 on Das Keyboard. I'd love to but I can't drop that much on a keyboard now.9
More of a question than a rant. How do you developers deal with relationships and such? So I work 8 hours a day programming, and I enjoy it that much, I usually come home and work on my own projects.
As you can imagine this is not something I want to stop. And I don't really want to not code after work, or I wouldn't make progress on my own stuff.
I'm pretty damn sure there's no way a female will put up with this, she wouldn't get enough attention and so on.
I appreciate everyone's honest feed back. Thanks.9
so, a new day, a new ERP software to rant about:
this one features an email feature (heh) but with a catch.
only pop3, no imap, if you want ssl the software suggest that you use a 3rd party program, also every user has to be logged in by the admin cause they assume the sysadmin knows all passwords cause he has "password lists"
i called them to ask why their software is what it is, they answer "there was never a need to develop an IMAP functionality, SSL would be so much work and it never became a problem that the sysadmin didnt know all passwords"
in unrelated news, does anyone know a nice sub 100K ERP software with CRM, Material Management and Offer/Order Management that runs on a local server and offers german support for a company in the 50 to 500 worker bracket?
I love it when a network engineer asks why it's been a week and I haven't finished rebuilding a non responsive site from the ground up in a little over two weeks time. Dude needs to get back to whatever the fuck network engineers do all day. Rant over.1
Just about done with a 14 hour work day, drinking a koolaid jammer, bout to play some video games. Life is good can I get a Alleluia?
Seriously though, nothing bad to rant about, and I’m kinda going insane.2
Today was my first day as a volunteer at a Danish organisation called Coding Pirates. The aim of the organization is to familiarize children with software, programming and technology in general. I was a bit worried, because in my other volunteer initiatives I help adults and I usually use English to explain concepts.
Today I did it in Danish and the children got everything explained to them rather quickly. I am extremely happy to see the enthusiasm with which they started.
All I can say is that I ended my day with a huge grin on my face. Can't wait til next Tuesday
Does AngularJS still have momentum. I toyed with it for a while on a side project. Since then .Net Core launched and most of my work (both day to day and side projects has been in MVC 5 or .Net Core)
I wanted to go back to tinkering with that one side project but it seems that some of the hype surrounding AngularJS has died off.7
Learning and working on a project built with purescript (fp).
Wrapping up my brain to think functionally and understanding it to implement is like rewiring my brain. I sometimes have to literally sleep on it, only to go through the concepts again the next day to get a little more insight than the day before 😝
Functional concepts are abstract af, but it sure does give you wings to liberate you from conventional way of things.
The other day i made a rant saying that having an index.js as entry point is misleading, in my opinion. it could have been implemented in so many and better ways but that's what we have because that's what the nodejs creator decided to do.
My previous rant wasn't well seen because everybody was saying that index js it's actually a good thing.
So I started to do some research because I've an important experience in software architecture and i was trying to understand why people couldn't get my point. Fortunately i found that even the creator of node itself regrets his choice to use a file as an entry point for modules and imports. You can have a look at the video, that is also really interesting, here: https://youtu.be/M3BM9TB-8yA3
That amazing feeling, maybe 3 or 4 times a year, when you have half-a-day of being up to date with your work 🍾
... ‘til that next impending fateful email
after a long struggle this has become a rant.
we've tried numerous ways to make local server/xamp/bitnami work with ubuntu 14.04 so that we can get working on WP and then setup git repo. thought life would be easy one day.
are we the only one suffering to make this thing work?
Having a day where everything hits the fan but I'm on top of it all.
I really do love this line of work 😊
new Confession(new Rant()).admit("My kludge bit me in the ass. But If I make a series of classes that encapsulate (hide) the awful hacks, one day I can replace the hacks with nice code. This is why I say I love refactoring. But right now, procrastination looks ugly.").asRant()1
One day @dfox, a person is going to lose their job being on devrant all day. Then rant about how they lost their job being on devrant.
I hate premade code/libraries fucking fuck some library decisions should be a question criteria for any interview. I would like to know the thought process you involved on why you chose a particular library. Fuuuuuuuuuuccccccckk the frustrations.
Thanks have a good day. :)2
