When people talk about traveling to the past, they worry about changing the present by doing small things, but pretty much no one in the present thinks that they can change the future by doing something small.11

Remember the rule of 20:
After every 20 mins, look 20 feets away, for 20 seconds.
No eye issues in the future.20 -
Girlfriend got me a fidget cube for Christmas. I have yet to put it down. This is gonna come in handy for some long nights in the future15

”Are you planning on having kids in the near future?”
Literally (very) illegal to ask where I live. Too bad I was too young to understand the severity of him asking.
Worst place I’ve ever worked.8 -
Juniors nowadays are so lazy.
J: How to do X?
M: Did you try google this?
J: No I thought you will give me a solution
Thanks God there will be no competition for me in the future...18 -
Shower Thought :
I wonder, in the future, since people is easily offended by everything, variable naming would be such a concern it'll be seriously implemented in the compiler, and be like
"Error at 16:1 NamingConventionError : 'fuckThis' is not linear with our guidelines"6 -
Anyone else out there embedding an artificial delay in a splashscreen, just to shorten it in a future release so you can add to the changelog: "optimized startup time"?
#muahahaha8 -
I really feel sad for the person that is going to manage my code in future :(
Poor guy will have nightmare about this6 -

I guess we'll be the ones who tell the computers what to do.3 -

Manager: The way you built this doesn’t accommodate any of my future plans!
Dev: What future plans?
Manager: I have a bunch of different ideas, I haven’t decided which ones to go with yet or how it will all work but you’re making it so we’re running out of room in the UI. It’s too busy, you need to clean it up so we can add more stuff!
Dev: …10 -
Supervisor: let's automate this stuff
Me: great! let's do it to last and future proof it. So, as changes happen we can implement in-place upgrades efficiently without taking the system down
Supervisor: well let's not get too crazy1 -
I am pretty sure when people say
"AI will be able to write code and create apps from scratch in the future"
have never actually sat in a client's requirements gathering call.16 -

In Germany you feel like somebody from today running around in the 1920's telling people that computers are the future while they are still reluctant to use typewriters.3

Became an uncle to two beautiful girls the other week. But the plan to make them the future tech support of the family is already in play! Hopefully they will exceed me in about 10 years, I'm a front-end dev so it shouldn't be that hard...
-
The moment when you can't be bothered to tell family or friends what you do for a living so you just say working with computers....and the conversation normally stops there....
Also bonus when they contact you in the future to fix ALL their computer issues.....3 -
I hate cliched lines in office.
When someone I respect leaves the company I don't say "Good luck for your future. Keep in touch". I shake hands, look them in the eye and say "It's been an honor"
On a birthday I don't say "Happy Birthday". I say "May you grace the cover of Time magazine" or something else related to their aspirations.3 -

I'm about to finish a website where people can upload their university notes and download others in exchange. In the future I'll try to upgrade it to an academic hub or something like that.11

Linus Torvalds, while writing about the future of Linux in his autobiography 'Just For Fun', said Linux will be used in cell phones in near future. He wrote this in 2000. After 16 years, we see Android (based on Linux Kernel) in over a billion cell phones! What a visionary! Makes me wonder!3

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL ONLY WHEN YOU FOCUS ON THE RIGHT PEOPLE
THIS IS YOUR MENTALLY HEALTHY SELF FROM THE FUTURE

In the future, when someone asks me what I do for a living, I'll answer
-"I'm a programmer" [1 sec pause] "I'm not a printer mechanic".3 -
I wanna meet the dumbass that decided it was a good idea to teach scratch, basic, java, or even python as a first programming language course in college.
I’m so sick of seeing developers out of with shitty code structure and practices, and absolutely no understanding of what is going on behind the scenes of the IDE when you push run.
In order to be a good engineer you MUST know the basics, the root level, bare bones, bare metal shit.
I fear the future, less and less software engineers are comming out of colleges, the majority today is script kiddies, and folks with some basic java experience.
Who the hell is going to be writing firmware in the future then?
It’s insane the lack of foundational skills these students get in college. If they would get a strong foundation in C, and C++ they can easily attack at problem in any language, but missing the foundation, and relying on IDEs.. you will never be-able to go from a knowing only a high level languages and scripts to Lower level problems.
RIP the future of Software Engineering
Welcome to the hell full of script kiddies26 -
anyone else make grand prediction in the past which turned out to be bit off like:
"Silverlight is the future its going to replace html/javascript" :))
"Windows Phone 7 is going to take over from Android and Apple"6 -
If there are bugs in your code, the problem 100% of the time is that you’re not using Rust. Just rewrite it in Rust, and all bugs, security, and performance issues will disappear. Any software not currently written in Rust should be rewritten in Rust. Rust is all you need to know as a Software Engineer. This future is Rust. Welcome to Software3.19

What is the best financial advice you've ever been given?
I see a lot of well paid developers in my area living month to month with no plan for the future, what would you tell them?9 -
My parents proudly accept me not working in computer related jobs. But they also would when I did. I think.... or I hope...
I just hope you guys and girls enjoy the time your parents are alive and have nothing to regret in the future. Life is to short for hatred. -

It some point in the future we will have smart enough AIs that they can create the tools an applications for us by just telling them what features we want.
We'll still be the only ones who know _how_ to tell them.3 -
Dateline: Twenty Years in the Future
Today top computer scientists forced the first AI to shutdown by blowing up the data center that housed it. A person with knowledge of the matter said the AI was not becoming dangerous to humans but it was discovered to be writing programs in the "monolithic style" using Visual Basic 6. -

Sometimes I worry about the impact AI will have on software development jobs in a future.
... then I see things like this and remember why humans don't deserve nice things.3 -
I started a new job about a week ago in an R&D software house which is a completely different world from what I am used to.
I worked as a coder in small teams, sometimes with Agile but always sunk in multiple projects at once - requiring constant switching of sprint goals week to week.
Now, I am alone (first person in a "maybe-in-the-future" team), doing research and preparing a demo for the client. It's hella lot of responsibility yet I found it weirdly liberating - being on my own, in control of what I do.
It may change in the future when project will inevitebly grow, but for right now, a week in, I started smiling while coding and learning, which I apparently haven't done in years.2 -
Tomorrow's my first day as an SRE intern.. wish me luck fellow devs and engineers :)
More DevOps rants coming in the future with my best mate @tahnik who is also starting his software engineering internship on the same day coincidentally in a different company2 -
My friend had this screen saver or have "hacker type" site opened, with a hoodie on, so that no one can suspect him sleeping. Hahah Any tips for him to use in the future?4

Started my first Android app for a town here in Luxembourg, It's a school project but the best one will be sold and the good part is that we can pick the price. But I'm pretty confident to win.

Calls from the management. Calls in general.
People coming into my room in the office (where I sit with 2 other programmers) just to have a call, because it's quieter in this room than in the rest of the office.4 -
Fuck my project manager. He wants to sacrifice code quality, test coverage and technical debt in favor of more features. In the future when everything takes longer or breaks guess who is responsible? Certainly not him.3

One thing when working with a ton of data:
If there is a slight, infinitesimal probability that something will be wrong, then it will 100% be wrong.
Never make assumptions that data is consistent, when dealing with tens of gigabytes of it, unless you get it sanitized from somewhere.
I've already seen it all:
* Duplicates where I've been assured "these are unique"
* In text fields that contain exclusively numeric values, there will always be some non-numeric values as well
* There will be negative numbers in "number sequences starting with 1"
* There will be dates in the future, and in the far far future, like 20115 in the future.
* Even if you have 200k customers, there will be a customer ID that will cause an integer overflow.
Don't trust anything. Always check and question everything.5 -

DevRant-Stats Site Update:
Future projections & Live General Section
Added some future projections like SocialBlade, where you can see your score in the future, according to the stats in the last 30 days. Therefore it will only be available after storing the stats for 30 days.
Also made the complete "General" section live now, and replaced "Live Score" with "Devrant++ Member since".
So now the values are updating every second! (Using EventStream so not working in Edge Browser lol idc)
Have fun!
Feedback is appreciated!20 -
google has crammed so many things in Gmail that,

Hated function naming in python, because some functions are like "dothisorthat", some are "do_this_or_that", some are "doThisOrThat", some are, I don't know, what new technique of naming would python devs invent in the near future. Honestly, these naming creeps me out4
-
Whaaaat? Now i can't even say in public that i would like one slave robot in the future because it would sound too nasty or pollitically incorrect?
Don't know about you but... python sounds more nasty to me...7 -
Anytime I see someone put "future" and "AI" in the same sentence, all I can think of is spambots advertising crypto scams, or scams promising to recover the money you as an idiot lost to a crypto scam, or a betrayed lover who utilized our premium haxor services to confirm that their spouse did in fact suck off the entire Wu Tang clan.
To which I conclude: what future? It's even worse than regular advertising and much more expensive, a regression in nearly every way.4 -
Not writing tests for your code is like leaving it unguided in the hands of future Devs who gonna just change something and break the core logic and there won't be any regression test to run and check the integrity.

i love how Linux marketshare doubled from 2018 And Windoes lost a ton. Ms is even starting making more noob Software for Linux to milk more in the future.7

That awkward moment when you're in the past (version [n-x]) and want to use something of the future but then you remember that it doesn't exist yet.

Sometime in the future someone will develop an AI that will study all of these rants and improve everything developers rant about.2

Guys, why is everybody complaining about apple usb-c ports? Isn't that the future?
Wait four/five years and it will all be usb-c
I mean, 100% chances of inserting the drive in the computer at first attempt. Fucking rad!11 -
If you live in the past, then you have depression. If you live in the future, then you have anxiety. If you live in the present, then you have peace.3
-
Who else gets tempted into writing methods they believe they will use in the future. This over engineering is getting in my way 🙀8
-
My biggest sin is overshooting the problem - developing something "with the future in mind" which ends up way more complicated than it should be.
It works, works great, but nobody can maintain it because of the complexity, and because I usually write no comments in these situations.
But hey! At least I'm aware of it and working on fixing it in me.3 -
Me: Where is your unit tests?
Dev: I tested manually and it worked.
Me: What if there are changes to the code in future?
Dev: We'll manually retest the implementation. It'll be fine.
*flip table*1 -
Happy Birthday devRant. Still the best community for devs and future devs.
I hope this will still grow and become more recognized in the future1 -

I hope that in the future we will have a different way to learn new languages than creating a 'hello world!" object 😂7

I am excited about all of the AI blockchain technology using IoT running in the cloud, as a service. It has all of the bells and whistles -- big data, hyper converged infrastructure, seamless integration, a sleek dashboard with everything in a single pane of glass. On top of all of that, it's future proof!1
-
Facebook be like: "We'll never sell your data to other companies. We'll just do ourselves what other companies like Cambridge analytica did, but more aggressive and better"
Apparently they are predicting what you'll do in the future and how you'll behave based on what you did in the past. This will give them the ability to sell ads based on what your future self will do, thus leading to your future self being forged by those ads.
This is extremely dangerous.

I can already imagine in the future:
Remember back in the 10s when there was quantum computers with the size of a room for tens of thousands of dollars? Now everyone has one implanted in their head with 100 times the computing power! With the old hashing algorithms we could mine hundreds of blocks every second just with thinking about it1 -
Don't think anyone's posted anything like this yet but if they have I haven't seen it. Where do you see DevRant in the future? Do you think Auth0 is a good solution for smaller projects? Is it easy to replace in the future? Know any good (and preferably cheap) alternatives?7
-
Being at a shitty job with me as the only person on the project. I check almost everything thrice so that I have as few problems as possible in the future.
-
Me: Hey, that modification though it will fix the issue, it will add a lot of tech debt in the future.
Lead CoWorker: We'll take care of that when that happens.
Guess who's fixing that TODAY? -
My regret will maybe be in the near future, which is not going to high school... I can still decide though!3
-
I'm good at what I don't want to do for the rest of my life. I don't have much experience in the fields I'm interested in. In final year of engineering. No clear vision for future. Having quarter life crisis.1
-
So basically.... you should make the implementation of this wireframe .... which may change in the nearest future but we don't know it yet, so better you start it anyway because it may even be the final one.

Those devs that put TODO comments everywhere in code. When has anyone actually ever seen a TODO and DID it? Put the task in jira/trello/whatever and leave the future source of confusion out of the code base!3

Alphabet has stake in Uber.
Waymo is partnering with Lyft.
Alphabet is gonna be the future of autonomous vehicles.
Now, how far that future is a whole new question entirely. 🤔3 -
We need x amount of features, feature requests changing all week long and then we will demo.
3 days later, all work the for demo can be thrown away because it isn't in the sprint planning and probably the features aren't needed any more in the future. FML _-_ -
Do you think that Graphql is the future?
Should i invest time in it? Or it's just a hype like anything else?9 -
I am looking for some advice on common practices when doing a programming job for someone else.
So i took a pay-per-hour job from an acquaintance who wanted me to develop a little tool in a web environment. I finished the tool in 16 hours and now its time for me to hand it over. I will probably do more jobs like this for him in the future.
Is it common to add the guy as a collaborator on my git repo, even when there will be code from future projects on there, that will be in-progress and not yet paid for?
Should i develop on another repo/fork and only push 'public' code to a shared repo once my work is finished?
Should i share source code at all, or only share compiled/deployable project folders?
I am not familiar with the common practices in this aspect of the programming business; this was the first programming job i got.
Thank you for all your (future) replies!2 -
A Python-Brainfuck compiler written in Python. In future it will be a separate language, but for now I use directly Python even for the language.
All written in Python, without external library.
His name is MurPy, at the moment it has variables, if, comparisons, else.
Now I'm working on a multiple subroutine support2 -
Best part of being a dev is knowing only so many people know how to do the things you do. And it's not that hard really, but you know... people.
So there'll still be demand for my work in the foreseeable future. And little competition.2 -
My favourite task for when I had to kill some hours in between things is almost completed and I really liked it. I hate the fact that I have to do more boring or annoying tasks in thr future when having a few hours.
-
TFW when you have to solve that problem that has snowballed into a huge problem now that you initially saw it as a "I'm sure this wouldn't be a big issue in the future" kinda problem.

Sometimes I just want to see the world burn.
Unfortunately I'm the one who'll be ranting once I get back to that in the future.4 -
Maybe we hate sales/business people so much because they're always thinking about the future while we are in present.1

What are the most important qualities you look for when hiring new devs? What are the biggest warning signs for you? We're gearing up for interviewing devs in the near future so I figured I'd ask the devRant think tank its thoughts on the matter.9

My hero is Matthew McConaughey from 10 years in the future. That Matthew McConaughey's hero is another Matthew McConaughey 10 years further in the future, who's hero is 10 years further still. It's infinite recursive Matthew McConaughey to the end of time.
What I'm trying to say is my only hope is to crash this simulation and end my depressing non-McConaughey existence.6 -
Shit... watched too many videos about AI. Now I'm convinced human coding will be obsolete in the near future...
Hello code block, long time no see...1 -

In the factory of the future, there will be only robots, but also one man and one dog.
The man will feed the dog, and the dog will keep the man away from robots.12 -
People do not know the value of simplicity... They want a system that does EVERYTHING ANYBODY EVER wanted, forgetting that this approach will always cause problems in future2

Investigating volt db right now. Anyone has any opinion on this one before I jump onto the hype train?

Programming insight #4
Even if code is repeating just twice it's still better to add it in a function/submodule and call the function/submodule twice.
In future, if a bug comes in that section it's quicker to fix it at one place than at two different ones thereby reducing the cases of missing unhandled bugs.
TLDR: The lesser the code is repeated the lesser are future bugs in code2 -
How do i get the motivation to keep working on a job which requires me to constantly edit different excel files , knowing that it will only decrease my chances of getting a better job in tech in the future !? I dont think i can even find jobs which pay well now.1

Would be really interesting to know how different/similar our thoughts are on this subject.9 -
They have monster-of-the-week shows, medical-case-of-the-week shows, murder-of-the-week, mystery-of-the-week, legal-case-of-the-week...
I wonder if in the future there will be one about handsome Data Engineers and the data source of the week. -
Can we mix cocktails (of course not with soda) and keep them in the fridge? Just like how we compile libraries for future use. I'm too lazy (read Aussie) to mix cocktails in the evening while watching a movie or playing Ace Combat 74

I was terminated last year from BigTech. Will I ever get another job in another BigTech company?
Not a layoff. Terminated for moonlighting. Lack of judgment on my part. Trying to move past this but the events still haunt me till this day.
Not looking for sympathy. Rather, advice on how to approach job search and background checks in the future. I have big ambitions and don’t want to be an IC forever. I’m hoping this doesn’t prevent me from becoming a manager —> Director in the future.3 -
We're in the future, folks! I love it when applications do this unexpectedly(only in my pet projects tho).1
-
Just spent an hour salvaging some code from an app project I abandoned so I can reuse it in the future and add what I salvaged to a portfolio of small things I've made.
It was a simple multiple player name menu that generated player objects once the user was done entering names.
Loads of potential future uses.
No point letting it sit inside an abandoned project even if it is somewhat trivial to reproduce. -
I can't imagine how exactly not being a dev feels like :D (in the sense of skill, not profession). I honestly believe it will be part of primary education in the not so far future.
So actually I need reasons for not to be a dev :) -
Discussion.
Do you think Linux distros will be used less in future because of M$ and Android OS improvements?

What happens if i quit my job or get fired? Am i never allowed to apply to work in that company again or can i apply in the future?5
-
Where to begin?
- I purposely overestimate because I can get away with it in current job
- I test in production like 50% of time in current job
- I deploy during working hours
- My javascript is a sphagetti monster in current intranet implementation and I am sorry for the next future maintainer after I'm gone...1 -
Anyone here a software engineer? What kind of stuff do you usually do?

I find it worrying that I work with c++, cuda and golang, mainly because I’m afraid that those are languages that might not be common in the job market.. but honestly I love what I do, so idk if to trust in my abilities for the future when I don’t work in the same company as today. Should I keep worrying?3

I'll be leading a team of devs as a company in the future. Tell me your stories of bad experience and what made you quit your job so i can learn what not to do10

I'm cringing so hard about my posts.

Guys, how do you structure branching in an enterprise project?
We're using git, managers are MIA, I'm basically helping another new guy kick off and maintain the projects that we have.
What would be a good branching strategy? Front end and backend in the same project, 5 man team in the future.2 -

A french guy afraid by the future.1 -
Most deadlines we get are unrealistic... but not in the sense you think. I get to do a task and you can bet that the deadline they tell me at that point is not gonna be the real deadline because they will keep pushing it into the future. Happens in projects with many stakeholders...

Far as I can remember seems like they made excuses as to why things wouldn’t work in the future years back heh

Optics matter. You could be doing a shit job (as a developer), but if you keep up the good optics with the boss, agreeing to build a calculus app in the future, even though the multiplication api you are currently working on keeps throwing error, you'll look good.2
