Search - "need advice"
So i've been a dev manager for a little while now. Thought i'd take some time to disambiguate some job titles to let everyone know what they might be in for when joining / moving around a big org.
Title: Senior Software Engineer
- Typically has years experience building what management are trying to build
- Building new features
- Writing code
- Code review
- Offering advice to product manag......OH NO YOU DON'T CODE MONKEY, BACK TO WORK!
Title: Dev Manager
- Former/current programmer
- knows his/her way around a codebase.
- Recruiting / interviewing new staff
- Keeping the team focused and delivering tasks
- Architecture decisions
- Lying about complexity of architecture decisions to ensure team gets the actual time they need
- Lying about feature estimations to ensure team gets to work on critical technical improvements that were cancelled / de-prioritised
- Explaining to hire-ups why we can't "Just do it quicker"
- Explaining to senior engineers why the product manager declined their meeting request
Title: Product / Product Manager
- Nothing relevant to the industry or product line what so ever
- Found the correct building on the day of the interview
- Has once opened an Excel spreadsheet and successfully saved it to a desktop
- Making every key decision about every feature available in the app
- Learning to ignore that inner voice we like to call "Common sense"
- Making sure to not accidentally take some advice from technical staff

- Reports directly to VP
- Fixes problems by creating a different problem somewhere else as a distraction
- Claiming to understand and green light technical decisions, while having already agreed with product that it will never happen9
Here's my piece of advice for new devs out there:
1 - Pick one language to learn first and stick with it, untill you grasp some solid fundamentals. (Variables, functions, classes, namespaces, scope, at least)
2 - Pick an IDE, and stick with it for now. Don't worry about tools yet. Comment everything you're coding. The important thing is to comment why you wrote it, and not what it does. Research git and start using version control, even when coding by yourself alone.
3 - Practice, pratice and pratice. If you got stuck, try reading the language docs first and see if you can figure it out yourself. If all else fails, then go to google and stackoverflow. Avoid copying the solution, type it all and try to understand it.
4 - After you feel you need to go to the next level, research best practices first, and start to apply them to your code. Try to make it modular as it grows. Then learn about tools, preprocessors and frameworks.
5 - Always keep studying. Never give up. We all feel that we have no idea of what we are doing sometimes. That's normal. You will understand eventually. ALWAYS KEEP STUDYING.9
I'm a college drop out. Left my college almost 1 year ago, taught myself php, js, nodejs, basics about servers and how it all works, currently learning angular, nativescript and a few small things.
People still taunt me about leaving my college. About how I should've at least completed my degree.
Student of my university don't even know how to code.
Like they only know simple hello world programs.
They have no idea about :
-Version control system
-Cross-platform app development
-web hooks and REST API
-Stack overflow (Yeah, they don't know about it)
-and a whole ton of small things that you MUST know as a computer engineer like e.g. how to use Vim
I keep getting nagged about my choices and it frustrates me that I can't explain it to them cause they're dumb.
I mean seriously people! Can't you see the difference between me and an engineer who doesn't even know the difference between API and IDE?
I mean seriously?
They say it's APPLICATION PROGRAMMING INTERFACE so it's Qt creator or [any other IDE]
How can I deal with this kind of nonsense?
I'm from India, it's that bad here.
Anybody else a drop out? How did you handle it?
My parents are supportive but they too sometimes worry.66
My boss doesn't really get that new implementations need to be tested, and despite we devs always telling him we need testing periods to ensure nothing breaks he always wants new things implemented a day before a presentation/app showing, normally we straight up refuse because we don't want to deliver a product we can't ensure works properly yet, even if it means a function isn't implemented yet.
One day he kept nagging that he wanted a complete new functionality we hadn't even started on yet because it was to be implemented way later in the process for a showing that the had in 8 hours, after alot of rebuking we decided to not refuse anymore and did what we could to make it work as best as possible
Skip forward a few hours, boss comes back, and boy was he a happy little sunshinee... Not. As expected not everything worked properly yet, and it even broke some other functions that worked before.
Needless to say he wasn't pleased when we said "told you we need testing periods, now unless you want this to happen again don't keep requesting new implementations hours before a showing"
Ever since that day he listens alot better when we say "we can't implement because it isn't tested yet" 👌🏻
Don't be a dick to your devs, and listen to their advice.3
I'm a self taught "code enthusiast" (don't think of myself as a programmer just yet). I love to play around with simple code, but I could never get into a "serious" project cause in my mind, to be a programmer you need to know every single line of code and not rely on the internet.
The fact that I got into programming at 23 doesn't help cause I also feel like a parent learning to use a piece of modern technology(even tho I'm tech savvy).
Anyone got any advice?22
--- UK Mobile carrier O2's data network vanishes like a fart in the wind ---
One of the largest mobile carriers in the UK; O2 has been having all manner of weird and wonderful problems this morning as bleary eyed susbcribers awoke to find their data services unavailable. What makes this particular outage interesting (more so than the annoyingly frequent wobblers some mobile masts have) is that the majority of the UK seems to be affected.
To further compound the hilarity/disaster (depending on which side of the fence you're on), Many smaller independent carriers such as GiffGaff and Tesco Mobile piggy-back off O2's network, meaning they're up the stinky creek without a paddle as well. Formal advice from the gaseous carrier is to reboot your device frequently to force a reconnect attempt, Which we're absolutely sure won't cause any issues at all with millions of devices screaming at the same network when it comes back up.
Issue reports began flooding DownDetector at around 5am (GMT), With PR minions formally acknowledging the issue 2 hours later at 7am (GMT) via the most official channel available - Twitter. After a few recent updates via the grapevine (companies involved seems to be keeping their heads down at the minute) Ericsson has been fingered for pushing out a wonky software update but there's been no official confirmation of this, so pitchforks away please folks.
If you're in need of a giggle while you wait for your 4G goodness to return, You can always hop on an open WiFi network and read the tales of distress the data-less masses are screaming into the void.6
Damn, credit cards are so fucking secure these days that you hardly can BUY shit with them!
I need some special electronics that I only can get from a vendor in the US, which is overseas. Click click, buy, done. Well no, credit card refused. WTF? Click retry link. No, still refused. FUCK.
Called up the 24/7 hotline of my CC company. Oh yeah, that got blocked by the security system, somehow. We disable that for 20 minutes, just retry. Clicked retry link at the vendor. No failure mail. Hmmm, too good to be true?! Called up the electronics vendor. Yeah should work, stuff is in the warehouse stage. 40 minutes later: credit card declined. FUCK.
Called up the CC company again. Ok, disable blocker for one hour. Nice advice from them, tell the vendor it's only 45 minutes so that there's some buffer. Clicked retry link at the vendor and called them up to make sure that they retry before the time runs out.
LO AND BEHOLD, I could finally pay the shit!!8
S = Some person I know
Me = Me
S: Hey, I heard you also do [software/web development].. I was hoping to get some advice from you about some advanced level HTML and CSS for my classes.
//or that if I could teach him something
Me: What do you study?
S: Oh, I teach.
Me: 😯 Really? What do you teach?
S: Oh, just some basic HTML and CSS with Notepad to about 50-60 students.
Me: (;﹏;) That's great.
/*this is a shortened version of a very long conversation*/
They teach some basic HTML and CSS like <table> and <marquee> and stuff. They also teach C++ and Tally ERP.
Also, he and some other person made their small intuitions' website but they don't know how to put it online. They made it in, as far as I understand, simple HTML and CSS USING NOTEPAD (Don't know if they used JS or something else). That's.. really courageous or something... ? I don't know, I couldn't have a look at it because they have it on their local computer and don't know what Git is.
I showed him some better alternatives and ways that they could use (editors, version control, db, etc.) to improve their curriculum and answered his questions, and I told him that I'll try to help in any way I can if they ever need me.
This also made me realize how much I've learned and grown since I first started learning C in school. Still, I've got so much more that I need and want to learn.
//Always keep learning
PS. What would you've told him if you had been in my place?1
I am like the weakest programmer at my job. I wanna improve and get better. Understanding how to write good unit test to reading code. Damn it. I just wanna be better.9
Advice for all future developers: for every project you work on - write down the time you've spent on it, which technologies (eg. Languages, stack, DBMS.. ) you used and what the subject of the project was. You'll likely gonna need it for future job applications and it's hard to come up with every detail after 6 years if you haven't written it down...3
I (and many devs might too) need some advice.
Well, I'm happy and sad at the same time :) :(
I'm so happy because finally I can put a floor pet on my avatar. I put my yellow favorite cat (its name is "Güero/Blondie"). On the other hand, I'm so sad because last week, my stupid and drug addict neighbor poisoned my cat :'( (not the yellow one, it was a gray cat. I'm 90% sure that he did it, he tried to do it last year). I know that it was only a cat, but I felt terribly all the past week, I couldn't even think or code. Fortunately it was the ending of the sprint and my code was successfully tested, so I didn't have to code, only trying not to cry at the office.
What would you do in this situation? I mean, those days when you feel like sh*t but you need to go to work and finish the code.29
I need some advice: How could you stop laughing at a meeting? Help!
Yesterday, in a meeting with the development team, my boss accidentally wrote "Puto System" on the board (of course, I cannot post the real name of the project). For those who don't speak spanish, "Puto" means "asshole".
Oh, I laughed so fucking hard XD Well, we continued with the meeting, but I couldn't stop laughing, and then, I was going to ask a question about one of my tasks, and accidentally said "hard" instead of "boubt" (in spanish "dura" instead of "duda") and all of us laughed again.
At the time I'm writing this post I can't remember that without laughing, help! I need to get serious :'v14
So I need some advice from some fellow devs here...
I recently accepted a job offer at a new company and I'll be leaving my place of work for the last 11 years. I'm a senior level dev who comes from a place where software is more of a secondary function and the skills of my peers are very... Atypical of most software developers.
My interview was ok, but I passed the mark barely - in that they recognize I'm rusty and have some gaps to shore up, but have decided to give me an offer anyway. I'm taking a "step down" to enter in as a level below senior to get my foot in the door of a real tech company.
I've got myself convinced I'm setting myself up to fail, despite being told by people that work there that they encourage mistakes and that they wouldn't be offering me a position if they didn't think I'd be successful.
Is it typical to feel inadequate and worried you'll be fired prematurely for underperformance? I've had little to no experience in a fast paced tech job so I have little to refer to. I was a very high performer where I'm coming from, but that's hard to equate to where I'm going. It seems like classic "impostor syndrome".
I've not even started there yet but I'm terrified my anxiety will get the better of me before I even have my first day there. Anyone out there have any advice?
I'm excited for this new opportunity but I can't seem to shake the fear of the unknown.4
Trying not to suck at code.
A good coder seems to be some one who does mistakes quickly and has strategies on how to resolve them even quicker.
The speed at which you create/resolve your problem is the experience curve at which you are learning.
How do you deal with headaches and frustration when spending hours on the same issue?
What are common efficient strat for debugging?
I know this sounds very generalised but i feel like it takes me days to do small things and need to take breaks all the time to relieve the pressure.
Any advice for a rookie?11
Hey there! -first rant-
I need your advice mighty ranters.. I'm an introverted gal studying Computer Science at uni, and i love this field. Wanna be a web or app developer..
I need your help about 2 things:
1. Literally ANY advice, or things you wish you knew, when you were a rookie
2. I'm currently living in solitude, because of hard times in the past and i find making friends much more difficult at uni than in high school. It even starts to affect my productivity in a bad way. I have a hard time trusting people.
So any advice about this? How do you cope with too much solitude? Is there maybe a group for girl programmers? I don't know..
All advice are welcomed! (and IT jokes too, to make my day :D )
Thanks a lot !
Ps.: You are great! Awesome community.20
Just deployed version 0.0.1 of my holiday project to production.
It's a pie "attached" to some speakers, mounted below the kitchen cubord. So far it only runs a spotify connect on it and you're able to play music there while cooking/cleaning.
I'd actually like it to also be able to just play regular music, either from a smartphone or a computer in the network. (It's connected by wifi to our lan). Any advice on what software I could install on it to achive that? i'd prefere to enable it for devices on the lan and have bluetouth dissabled, but I'm actually not sure if that is even possible. So yeah any advice to that? Or any other things you'd install on it?
I know, that I need to do some "cable management" back there :P10
So I’m currently looking as a side project to build a web based game using canvas / webgl possibly, I don’t really want to take up iOS/Android dev to do this.
This is a new field for me being mostly a ecommerce guy rather then game dev, so I was wondering if anyone out there knows off a good starting point and decent frameworks to get me going.
I came across
and it seems at a surface level semi suitable.
I’m not looking at doing anything overly complex, basically drag drop functionality for the interaction to navigate a sprite around mazes at a top-down level with I guess collision detection for when you turn the wrong way.9
I DID IT!!! just fucking installed lineage os <3 never imagined that it could be so complicated... they really don't want you to flash your phone man. I guess the main problem was that my phone is old x)
So I'm trying to get a clean and free environment, any advice about applications? My biggest problem is with telegram, I'll try wire, bit there is anything else that can replace telegram and on android and Linux? I mean I need to keep conversations sync, and I won't use a Chrome application TT so no signal.41
Need advice on coping with my father's passing . I was already very stressed out and had really bad focus. I feel lost now , I can't even cry the tears won't come out. Why can I cry for a stupid movie and not now...10
So here I am, still fresh and new, full of the hope of the infinite world of programming. But I need advice from the senior Devs among you.
How do you divide your time? How do you manage the desire to learn as much as possible with everything else? With life?
I want to be healthy and sociable but I really want to just stay in and programme. I want to be one the best I can possibly be and I don't quite know how to balance it.
Any tips or advice?
I need to pick a CSS framework for a[n eventually very large] React/React-native project at work. Any suggestions?
While I'm very good with CSS, nobody else is,
and eventually everyone is going to be touching the project, so it needs to be pretty easy to use.
I'm thinking of picking Bulma, or one of the newer, lighter frameworks, but I just don't know. (I'm also getting a lot of pressure to pick Bootstrap3 so we can... copy tables from unrelated sites? I guess? idgi)
Anyway, I have until Wednesday to completely convert over (it'll take me a day), and I still don't know what to pick yet.
Not a rant, need advice
I recently signed an offer with Facebook, today Uber offered me a similar position with much more stock compared to Facebooks offer. What's the right thing to do here?
Should I go back to Facebook and ask them to match? Give up fb and move to uber ?39
Okay.. Serious question.
I have a game. And a license that i have to provide a name for.
..I'm transgender, and have get to get a legal name change...
Do I /have/ to claim it under my birth name? (I don't own a company, so i assume the answer is yes.)24
My CEO uncle: "anyone can program."
A quote from when we were discussing strategy for my sit down with the CEO of a company I was applying at (FYI, his advice was to research the company, be familiar with their long term strategies and such). I get that there's no need to prove my technical prowess to a business exec, but it isn't because "anyone can program."
I mean, sure, in a philosophical sense, anybody has the capacity to learn. But developers aren't a fungible asset. Treating them as such leads to ruin.3
This is my first post here, really need some advice.
I recently left a job in a corporate, soul sucking, hell hole for a job in a slightly smaller company for more money.
All good at the time - I got a weird feeling at the interview but ignored it as I was desperate to get out of where I was.
But, since I started my new job a couple of months ago about 20 people have left - some redundancies, some just hate it. Their tech stack is old, there’s no talk of R&D or doing anything new. They just churn out the same dodgy code for each client. Management are trying to bring in a new low code solution that won’t actually do what they need. I definitely get the impression that they view development as a cost that needs to be reduced. The work environment is noisy as it’s open plan and we share it with sales and marketing.
There are a couple of good points, I like my team and there is currently no pressure on me to complete my current project.
So, do I stay, try and keep out of the politics and use my pressure free time to improve my skills. Or get out before I get sucked in to the bullshit that goes along with incompetent management and continual cost cutting?8
Rewrite of the sync api to REST.
Coworker: “hey, I know you’ve written and maintained our sync module for the past 4 years. Something I need to know? Some hints or knowledge you can share?”
Me: only thing you should not do is x and y. Otherwise you will face problems a and b.”
Coworker: “great, thanks a lot!”
2 months later...
Customer call: “da fuck are you doing? When I do stupid stuff then I face problem z and problem a!!!”
*me checking new code*
*me calling coworker*
Me: “WTF did you do? You asked for my advice and then did exactly what I told you NOT to do.”
Coworker: “oh, let me check the code..”
*coworker calls boss*
Coworker: “Boss, I can’t work with this guy, he starts fights all the time..”
*boss comes to my desk*
Boss: “I don’t want you to work on this anymore, people are complaining.”
Me: “what the fuck, I just asked him a question..”
~ 1 month later
coworker quits because he can’t handle all the bugs he caused and I have to maintain this piece of fucking retard code..3
I didnt thought I have to write this down, but you people dont get standard business logic, so here advice from someone who knows that shit:
- If you wanna get paid, make your own contract and let a lawyer look over it.
- always have a lawyer on retainer and enough money for him/her.
- nothing is real without a signature.
- your clients should know that you're gonna sue them if they don't pay.
- don't go easy on anyone, here an easy way to decide if you should sue:
Didnt pay? Sue.
Breaks contract? Sue
Asks for later payment? Dont
- always code in a killswitch, trust me you're gonna need it.8
In the 2nd proyect we create a Data dashboard i do my very best effort to create Js funcional code and other 2 girls works in css and html.
Im really proud of my work (1st time!)
In 2 weeks im gonna participate in Angelhack Santiago Hackathon 2018
I need an advice for me its a really big step11
Why the fuck is this apple stuff so fucking expensive?
I want to dig into IOS app development but I am seriously considering not to do it because it's fucking expensive...
I am a young dev (in apprenticeship) and my company offered me a phone. That's great because I can save the money that I would have payed for my phone bill.
But sadly it's an iPhone... I thought why not make something cool out of it and start learning IOS development.
But so far all I saw from IOS development are extreme high costs...
Is there some kind of student plan or anything that makes it cheaper to learn?
Can you guys give me any advice on this?
I own an old MacBook but I need a new OS on it... (long story)
Are there anymore hidden costs? Any tips where to start?
Thanks for your help fellow ranters and sorry for the half rant half question12
I can't stop procrastinating from doing what I need to do. This extends to even web development and coding on personal projects, which is something I really enjoy doing.
It's as if I have some sort of underlying fear holding me back each time I get the chance to get things done. Normally I don't have the time and make the excuse for myself that there "is not enough time" but tbh I now literally have an entire week in front of me free, with nobody to distract me. I am actually getting my long-desired time alone. I can finally power through all the things that require intense focus, like coding.
And yet, I can't bring myself to just do it. Instead I make excuses and go play video games instead (Overwatch has been a really bad time sink for me). I haven't been able to do what I wanted to for like a year now. What the fuck is wrong with me?
I need help guys!! Anyone have advice for me?9
!rant I need job advice. Please reason with me.
I am 26, got 2 years of experience in c# and unity3d.
I did some research and it turns out that the minimal paying average with my job/experience over the whole country is at least 300€ a month more than what i get payed currently.
I made a list of pros and cons, and am just not sure what would be smartest to do in the long run. Here is a list for both options, please chime in on me if you can!
Points for current job:
Permanent contract (hard to fire me etc.)
Get to make mostly mobile games but nothing really big
Fun small team whom i get along with (i am on the spectrum and can be hard to deal with social or costumer related things)
Rarely any overtime (i like to know my hours)
Easy but slow jobs (badly organized, drag on forever)
Rarely challenged and thus boring me
I get to shoot nerf guns at colleagues whenever
Low chance of a 300€/m pay increase (not worth it to boss, financials aren't that great but the company is promising)
Points for any other job:
Unknown working condittions
I am probably bad and uknowledgeable about any tool they give me to work with because my experience is so monotone
Start on short term contract again all over
At the least a 300€ net increase a month
Prob closer to home then 1h drive away
I get to learn new things but give up on games/apps as i know them
Probably get knowledgeable seniors
Probably end up in a bigger more serious company where i am just a number
I am bad in new social envirnoments, oh the angst is real
And a few things besides it are that i personally only have as goal to own my own house with my fiance as soon as i can. And this means i will need to take out a 200k loan or something along those lines, to be paid off over 30 years max.
This means that the permanent contract is very valuable in my eyes, but so is monthly pay increase.
I want to have fun in my job, i want to learn new things and better ways. But i also want to be able to say "enough" to something if it overwhelms me. I just know some things are not for me and i would mess up if i were made to do them. I fear that to not be an option in a big company. I would be forced out of my comfort zone without any regard for me or my learning curve.
Any advice is welcome. Please keep it general if you can so others can learn from this as well. Seniors advice will probably be helpfull to all starting programmers!10
Need some advice guys/gals. I'm a back-ender working to create a new web application where I do the UI creation as well. I'm very familiar with bootstrap but do you people have any tips on how to create interfaces easily and fast?6
Guys I need your help. I'm a student working at a very small development business as a developer ( who would have thought) and I really love working there ( nice colleagues, I learn something every day) but recently I don't get enough work. it really feels like half of my day is spend running after the seniors asking for work and it starts to get really annoying not only for my but for them too. and most recently I'm just going home early because I don't want to just sit there unproductivly :/ but this is not really a solution either because at the moment I'm trying to work 40 hours ( I get paid 20) to get some overtime to not have to work as much as soon as my university starts. but now I don't get my hours and have to chase for work... does anyone have any advice for me?6
Deployed to production two days ago, errors still coming out and ALL of them have been my fault :(
I feel really shitty and I feel like I have no brain, maybe dev is not my career
Any advice to overcome this frustration? I really need to read your advices, guys :(16
Am I the only one who encounters these dickhead teachers, who live in a world, where they think that you have just their subject?
I mean that kind of professor, who shows up 30 minutes late to a lecture, sends you source code with no commetary because fuck you with a rusty fork and tells you that we have no time to write the code during the class?
The one who shows you a shitty presentation with the same code he just sent you, just cut into 72 slides and at every slide tells something like this is pretty self explanatory, x just does y and if you ask a question he gives you that deep stare, like if you really mean it seriously to waste his time, since he really really wants to go to his office sooner so he can scratch his balls?
That type of professor who tells you that as a student of CS degree you are required to put some passion to your craft and study when you arrive at home and hes there just to give you guidelines, but apparently somehow forgotten that people usually need to sleep?
That same cunt who doesnt give a shit that you have 4 more projects to finish this week, doesnt push the deadline, nor give you advice, because you had opporturnity to ask the whole time?
But still that motherfucker, who gives you test questions that he took from mouth of Satan himself and then questions your answers like Where did you get that from?
Well fuck yall who do that shit, hope that you suffocate yourself while eating bread.
Why these douches doesnt understand, that even if we arent under the Working Laws, working more than 40 hours a week isnt the best way to keep us sane or motivated.2
how long do you guys code per day?
being a student i have now extreme difficulties in time management😐
need some advice...11
Looking for advice, serious advices.
I work in C.
Also, I work in Python.
I have worked for a couple of year in C++.
I have a fair knowledge of the Data Science workflow, and some experience in Machine Learning.
I have tinkered with some other languages (Java, Ruby, Go, JS among the others, nothing serious nor professional)
I'm the kind of person who needs constant problems to face in order to keep engaged, satisfied, happy. And I need to learn new stuff, or refining my knowledge constantly, or I stagnate. I believe that this is true for quite a share of people here.
I would like to spend some spare time (I seldom have) in a project. Personal projects are rarely good enough to improve one's cv, so I thought I could partecipate in some Open Source projects.
Does anyone here have some suggestion about some interesting and satisfying OSProject, or some general suggestion on the matter?
It would be so apreciated.2
Need some advice -
I have over one month spare time before joining the company. I have always wanted to learn an instrument but I'm also 'thinking' of joining a gym but I don't have any fantasies for big biceps and I am a big time foodie.
I have read that learning new instruments would help you in critical and out of the box thinking which is a definite plus while programming. While joining a gym would be a good way to keep myself fit in this hectic world of programming.
I'm torn in choosing between these two options. Which one should I join as a developer? What would my fellow devs suggest? 🤔22
fucking zoho and their fucking sign up and authentication process.
they need a mobile phone number for the sing up, alright fine, I provide. but after submitting the form, nothing fucking happened and i am redirected to the initial sign up page. fuck you.
try again and guess what, said my phone number is already used and i can try sign in with it. ok alright, i try to sign in using my number and my password. guess what? i am redirected back at the initital sign up form page. fuckkkkkkkkkk.
i try again with another number. and then this time, guess what? said the fucking email is already existed. jesus fucking fucking christ.
browse around their help desk and found this. https://help.zoho.com/portal/kb/...
sure I follow the advice and guess what? yeah i'm redirected back to the FUCKING GOD DAMN same page again.
I gave up and wanted to send them a reply on their help desk and try to log in using one of my other existing zoho accounts. GUESS WHAT? THEIR HELP DESK LOG IN IS NOT WORKING. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
I click "Sign In". Login as User or Login as Agent dropdown appear. I click Login as User since my user account is already logged in. It nothing happened. It flashed and I am back at the help desk thread with no changes. It is still "Sign In" at the top. I fucking give up.5
I swear to god, if I read another medium post on how you managed to be focused and productive I will fucking... well... roll my eyes, make a facepalm and rant about it on devRant!
Who gives a shit if I'm unproductive and unfocused?!
Well, look at me now, I'm fucking productive while I write about you, you fucking peace off shit! And guess what? I'm not even using any of your 40 todo apps or time trackers. There is no pomodoro timer next to me or framed quotes from Steve Jobs hanging on the wall. Oh, I must be a fucking genius!
But what if YOU became unproductive?
What will happen when YOU start to procrastinate?
Do you really think the world would care?
Oh, but you are not really a writer are you? you're a developer building your app!?
Well fuck, I guess you're going to change the world than?
It's your big project. Your life's work, your legacy.
Let me remind you...
All apps will be abandoned!
All blog post will be forgotten!
Productive people will die!
Focused people will die!
Enthusiastic bloggers writing about productivity will die!
All CEOs and CTOs will die!
All developers will die!
Steve Jobs is dead!
In x years, you and I will also be dead!
Whatever you do, it's not really that important!
It's really not.
You're not going to change the world.
The world doesn't need another app.
The world doesn't need your advice on how to be productive.
You are not special.
Deal with it!9
My best developer just accepted an offer at a corporation. Now it’s just me and the newbie with enough work flowing in to keep me busy for a year including custom app builds for freikan Disney!
I’ve never had to tackle the hiring process myself like this but I need advice for finding all around fantastic developers who can tackle whatever new thing is thrown at them.11
I found out about and started using flex recently...
It's like there was this whole beautiful, magnificent city hidden beneath the piece of shit city I've been living in and I fell down a manhole to behold it's radiance.
FUCK YOU FLOATS AND YOUR FUCKING FLOW RUINING BULLSHIT! NO MORE WILL I NEED TO POSITION: ABSOLUTE CHILDREN!
Advice for every frontend dev. SASS and Flex. If nothing else, SASS and Flex.7
One of the projects I develop generates advice based on energy usage and a questionare with 300 questions.
Over 400 different variables determine what kind of advice is given. Lots of userinput and over a thousand textblocks that need to show or not.
WTF do you want me to do when you tell me. It's not giving the right advice for the lights.
Why the for the love of.. do I need to ask you everytime. If something is not working. Tell me what and for wich user. Don't tell me calculation whatever is not working, I don't know that calculation. Your calculations are maintainable in your cms.
And how, like I really wonder, do you expect me, when not telling me what user is having this problemen to find and fix it, You just want me to random guess one of the thousands users that should be given that specific advice?
FCK, like 80% of my time solving problems is spend trying to figure out wtf your talking about.
And then what a miricale the function is doing exactly what is it doing but you forgot a variable. It's not like the code I write suddenly decides it does not feel like giving the right answer.3
I'm asking a few questions to all the game developers here.
1. How'd you learn to make games (books, YouTube series, udemy, sold your soul to Satan, etc) ?
2. When and how did you realize that Game Dev is what you want to do?
Well it's been a while I suppose. Sorry I haven't been around for over a month guys. That's what happens when you're a full-time student with a full-time job.
Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, I need some advice/help. I've been working on a senior thesis project that I'm trying to deploy but I'm going crazy trying to figure out how to do it. It's a Spring Boot Java application built as a micro service. I've tried for the past 5 days to get this sucker working on Cloud Foundry with no luck. I've got a deadline to get this fucking thing live in 2 weeks and I'm getting closer to being in a panic. My question basically is, would it be easier to learn a different service/build my own solution from scratch then trying to fuck around with this? I'd appreciate anyone's advice who's had more experience with deploying Java web applications.
Here's a link to the project if anyone's interested: https://github.com/starrynights89/...21
I've seen a lot of people design great websites here on DR. Since I'm being dragged into quite a bit of front end, I've decided to quit complaining and up my design game. Suggestions and advice on good design considerations?
Our creative lead sent me a few reference websites that had a lot of "wow factor". It had stuff like trailing text animations, slow motion menus and what not. For some reason, I found all of it to be annoying and pointlessly bloated. I'm more into minimalist design and simple transitions but idk if this is just my taste or lack of competence in making such fancy ass design that makes me not appreciate such sites. I need advice and I'm not sure on what. You'd probably know what if you've been in a similar situation before.17
Ok guys I need advice, haven't posted in a long time.
A profesor is asking my team to build a java application that runs on a server with a very specific tech-stack (database, container, encryption, use-case and UI design) it's basically a fully fledged app that I know would cost somebody hundreds if not thousands to buy. The thing is I'm getting the feeling he's using us to write this code and then later distribute it while all we get is 20/100 points we need to pass the course. I heard rumors...
So what I wanna do is throw it on github (he's obviously expecting me to open source it at which point he forks it and bam!) and slap the most restrictive license on it. Now I don't have much experience with licensing or this sort of thing... any advice? I want to be able to go at his throat if I ever find out he used my code which I'm supposed to spend 3 weeks writing for free for a fucking "uni" project that's worth a fifth of my grade in that one semester course!22
i need to create an application with video call and streaming...
i was advised to use node or golang as backend.
Does anyone know or have an advice to me or do you about a library or framework? other language, database? idk
thanks to all of you4
Today I gave Php a try, I leaned the basics and oriented object programming of it . but now I dont know how to make UI in PHP . ans I need some advice what should I learn next im a .net programmer36
trying to get into gamedev is usually a shitty experience to me...
being a web dev OTOH feels like the opposite. There are css libraries that can make your site beautiful for you (albeit kinda generic).
so when you look at the screen when working on something, you can see something pretty, and it feels like progress.
you can show this to people and they'll be like "wow, look at you and your fancy site".
Show an expertly coded but cssless site to people and they will ask you if you did it with digital crayons.
That's how it feels when I try to get into gamedev, shockingly embarassing.
If I do my own assets, it looks like shit and takes forever. If I use other people's assets, it feels unoriginal.
I used to believe that gameplay is everything, graphics are nothing. But I'm not certain about that right now.
A very common advice to get into gamedev is to start with games that are already made. Like doing a tetris.
Great, that's exactly what I need. Doing a game that looks like shit, with a gameplay I'm not dying to program.
Another thing that makes me feel incompatible with games is the possible reality of that saying that goes "art is never finished, only abandoned", and games being art in a sense.
I'm not sure if I have that mentality. I think I am more of a results type of person, and doing games feels a bit opposite to that.
All of this is making me a bit sad, because video games have been and still are my number one interest, and there has been countless times where I wished I had the role of game designer so I could define in actual projects what a game would be. Like all those "wouldn't it be cool if you could remove X and add Y to this fame" feelings.8
Need Advice + Rant
I am an Android Developer, pursuing an Internship, which i thought would be good for my career. But I am being assigned the task to build search feature for the App using Elastic Search. I intially was halpy to work on Search since it had to be Algolia. I am hating the work now because I am getting so stuck with Elastic and there have been other factors which also have decreased my productivity, but I am being quite inefficient. Now the deadlines are coming closer and if I dont give output I will be laid off. I am thinking about quitting myself because now I feel extremely demoralized and demotivated to work because we first decided to work on Algolia and it was all ready before we thought of shifting to heroku and now on AWS. What do the experienced once suggest? It's not that its impossible to do, now i just have to write queries in Java, again I am stuck and not really looking forward to since I was given the deadline today, for 2 days later.
The only issue is, I may have to return the new phone (OnePlus 3T) which I bought planning to later return the money to someone through my stipend.23
Hi guys some advice would be appreciated.
I’m new here but have followed for a long time. I enjoy coding in my spare time, particularly web development but I am looking to make it my career.
Currently I work in mental health as a social worker, but ultimately the stress of the job and life in general has led to me being detained in a psychiatric hospital. So I’ve decided I need change.
I want to start a career I want to be in and that is as a developer. In terms of education, I started a degree in maths/cs a long time ago but stopped due to life events at the time. All the rest of my qualifications are around social work.
Are there any self made developers out there who have any advice for me? I’m looking at doing a bootcamp but dunno if that will help at all.
Any help or advice would be really welcome. Cheers guys :)25
I’m going to fly tomorrow and was wondering if I can bring my raspberry pi in my hand luggage. As known sometimes people in security checks are definitely not that awake and I don’t want my rPi in a garbage bin thinking it’s a bomb or something.
Otherwise I’ll just copy everything I need on a VM and go with it , but I wanted my sensors live ahah13
So I have a question regarding what I should learn next. I am going to my 3rd year in college and you can say that I am sort of baby MERN stack developer. Baby because I don't have a lot of production/real world experience. Now I need to decide whether I want to continue to work with JS in web dev. Or should I go to some other language for web dev like . NET or python. Or should I start learning GraphQL, or Machine learning. I am quite interested in blockchain and devops also, but I need to make a decision and please give me advice as to what you think will help me in the future.
I know I am all over the place but that is literally my brain since last few weeks.
Thanks in advance, I'll do a ++ as a form of my thanks.14
This basically is me rambling all my thoughts that have been clouding my mind.
Learning other programming languages after learning the first is harder than I expected. I learned python first but that's making learning others (which I know arent similar but ) C, ES6, PHP, etc. I need to figure out what makes each one special and get a proper path instead of learning them all the same way. Which is easier for the web dev languages but fuck man I just need a good path for them and I'm good. Like learn this this this this that and that and I've got a basic understanding of the language I dont need to stress and I can casually build my knowledge from here now that I understand all this. Cause I love programming and I want to be the best I can be and just get to the level I am with python. And at some point I have to learn about basic electronics and learning how to program Arduinos with C so I can do stuff with that because I really really REALLY want to.
It doesnt stop there. I want to learn another language and no I'm not talkin bout programming anymore I mean I wanna learn Japanese and German (but japanese primarily) but it doesnt help that I'm always either in school, studying, programming, or playing games. I just cant find time to practice Hiragana&Katakana (two basic writing systems in japan) and it doesnt help that I'm a lazy procrastinating piece of shit that doesnt have or can keep a proper schedule and hell I barely can English and Its my native tongue. Ugh. Itd be better if I had a native speaker to help me tbh.
And finally I want to learn basic pixel animating I have dreamed as a kid to do some kind of animation and programming and I want to do both for games I want to program for fun but it doesnt help that I cant draw sprites or anything for shit. I cant get it and I just am fucked but I'm going to ask some people I know and a few subreddits for advice/help/resources with that
Welp that was the Bubbles Power Hour none of you probably are keen followers of mine and if I had any I'd be shocked and honored but thanks for reading anyways and any advice on anything is always appreciated!11
TLDR: I need advice on reasonable salary expectations for sysadmin work in the rural United States.
I need some community advice. I’m the sysadmin at a small (35 employee) credit card processing company. I began as an intern and have now become their full time sysadmin/networking specialist. Since I was hired in January I have:
-migrated their 2007 Exchange server to Office 365
-Upgraded their ailing Windows server 2003 based architecture to 2012R2
-Licensed their unlicensed VMware ESXi servers (which they had already paid for license keys for!!!) and then upgraded them to 6.5 while preventing downtime on hosted VMs using tricky transfers and deployments (without vMotion!)
-Deployed a vCenter server to manage said ESXi servers easier
-Fixed a three month gap in their backups by implementing Veeam, and verifying its functionality
-Migrated a ‘no downtime’ fileserver to a new hypervisor host, implemented a ‘hot standby’ server as a backup kept up to date by the minute with DFS replication.
-Replaced failing hard drives in a RAID array underlying their one ‘business critical’ fileserver, which had no backups for 3 months at that time
-Reorganized Active Directory and Group Policy deployment from a nightmare spiderweb of OUs and duplicate policies
-Documented the entire old network and now the new one as I’ve been upgrading this
-Audited the developers AWS instances and removed redundant machines, optimized load balancing on front end Nginx servers, joined developer run Fedora workstations to the AD domain and implemented centralized syslog monitoring on them.
-Performed network scans and rewrote firewall exceptions to tighten security
There’s more, but you get the idea. I’ve now been tasked with taking point on an upcoming PCI audit which will be my first.
I’m being paid $16/hr US, with marginal health benefits. This is roughly $32,000 a year, before taxes.
I have two years previous work experience managing a third party Apple repair facility (SimplyMac) and every Apple certification for warranty repair and software troubleshooting. I have a two year degree in general sciences, with about 4 years of college credit (Two years of a physics education and two years of computer science after I switched focus) I’m actively pursuing a CCNA and MCSA server 2016 with exams paid for and scheduled.
I’m going into a salary negotiation in two months. What is a reasonable salary to request, from your perspective, for someone in my position?
Thanks in advance!6
So I just ditched Windows, but then realized that my music production stuff (mostly REAPER and a few free VSTs) are all Windows/Mac only.
Audio on Linux is fun (as in, pain). JACK seems to be really flexible but is a pain to set up correctly.
Any of you use Linux for music production? Any advice?
I'm using Elementary. Essentially, I need:
1. A good DAW for recording, minimal MIDI.
2. A good sampler.
3. Standard plugin suite - reverb, eq, filters, compressors, delays, etc. I'm not too choosy.
4. Basic synths (I'll be happy with a simple saw/square wave generator, but the more the merrier).
How's Ardour? Compiling it from source right now.
REAPER on Wine doesn't run well for me, so that's out. And they don't have a native Linux version yet.
(no Bitwig, please, I'm not ready to pay $300 or whatever right now)28
So I need your advice guys. Our team is in crisis mode right now because of a vendor's attempt to extort money out of us. So for the next 6 months I am going to be taken off development and made to do sysadmin work...which I hate.
There is another team at work that was trying to woo me over to their team, working in security...which I love.
So would it be a dick move to leave my struggling team that is trying to use a hammer as a screwdriver and do what makes me happy? Or should I be a good person and do work that makes me miserable and go home and drink every night instead?4
Last day in the office this year was a little emotional (and I'm basically a robot). Everyone there has been amazing and it's such an incredible shift in working environment. It's just made me think that no matter how crappy a situation is it will get better.
I appreciate everything I learned in my last company but the stress was killing me. There is no need to put up with stress and shitty working conditions. You are all better than that. You all deserve better than that. Take some time for yourself. Let yourself grow and be the fucking badass you always knew you were.
Thanks everyone who's given me advice over the last year. You're all incredible.
Hey! I kinda need your help guys ! 😄
I'm quite a noob at programming but really love it and have been for quite some time.
I've been learning Kotlin for a school project lately and I finally got a working version done.
Could you give me some feedback about it, maybe some advice or some fun to program features to add? It would help me a lot!
I know it's a kinda useless app but it really was all about trying to use all the theory I've learned through tutorials by myself, and doing that really comforted me in the idea that I want to study the equivalent of CS in France next year.
Here's the link : https://play.google.com/store/apps/...7
Any advice on some good SQL book or resources?
I need to start learning DB designing and theory.
I know jackshit apart from the basic commands.4
I want to get advice about a VPN Service,
Currently NordVPN giving away 75% discount for 3 years subscription which costs $107.55,
Any of you have experience with their service?
Need reviews or opinions28
Need advice. I've constantly been the type of person who cannot master any programming language because I struggle with knowing "what to do/type next". If you had this problem and fixed it, how?8
I never seen my high school friends about a year because of my project and community (with same topic). Then when I met them, I just realized that I never have social life. Still, I'm just a listener. I don't know how I tell about what I did last year, because I'm too afraid they don't understand.
Then I keep my mouth, just smiling, listen their awesome story about their jobs, family or their friends in college ....
I'm come back home, so lonely in here. I opened my laptop, then realised another things. I'm just communicated with scripts, with millions line of codes, with many library, with many issues about my projects, with those compiler ...
How you guys talk with non-IT friends? I don't even remember how I used to be their friends and laugh together
What a saddest night in my life ...4
During the course of my career I've stumbled on like 6-7 people I've worked with and it was really great. Every now and then we meet up and chat how it'd be great to form a team again and work on something (we're all in different companies atm).
Lately we've been mentioning that even more and are considering whether to start working on a product/find clients and form an agency/join some other company.
We have experience with both outsource and products. Our profiles range from development, design, marketing, UX, HR, PM.
Any road we take has pros and cons. We're least fit to start on a product because we'd need more profiles, have to figure out finance and would probably have to work alongside our current jobs.
I've been thinking of writing a joint letter when I hear a company is opening up an office in our city. When that happens, usually whole teams are formed and most of the profiles I mentioned are needed.
Do you think that's even possible? Is there another way we're overseeing? Have you heard of or attempted something similar?
Any advice is truly appreciated.2
Need a advice.
Have been a Windows user since many years. But at college I do use ubuntu and am familiar with it. So now I have developed interest in using Linux due to its simplicity and ease of use.
But for some tasks I still need Windows. So thinking to Dual boot my laptop. Have heard dual boot harms the laptop, makes it slow, blah blah.
So Is it advisable to Dualboot on a same machine?

!rant Need advice. Been wanting to switch to Mac-based dev for a while and finally found an $810 new-in-box iMac 21.5" 4K with retina / 3.1Ghz quad / 8GB / 1TB bought new from BestBuy late 2016 but manufactured sometime in 2015. Never opened. Any potential pitfalls with that and expected OS updates or dev tools?6
I need help and advice!
I currently work as an consultant at a large corporation. Came onboard for 1-2 years to help rebuild one of their platforms. From the beginning the mindset was that the finished product should not be developed based on anything else than customer testimonials and interviews regarding functionality and design. However, they’re building their platform developed and distributed by this other company. Basically they bought a system that is incomplete regarding to being compliant to the specifications brought to them when they decided which system to go with. Now we’re trying to build around all the issue this platform is causing us. The code base for the system is like something a monkey did with their feet. Nothing makes sense and it’s layers on top of layers of 10 year old code. I f-ing hate it. I don’t know what to do. We have some many technical limitation that it’s impossible to create the vision they had from the start.
I’ve been thinking about talking to the highest chief in the department as he has been pissed earlier about project managers not escalating issue to him earlier. But I don’t want to step on anyones toes. Should I leave the project? Should I talk to the chief? What do I do? I’m miserable🤯7
Hey guys, I need some junior advice. I work at a small startup in a team with 2 other backend developers.
The "new" guy studied at a university for a few years. He writes beautiful code. I try to learn from it and use his short hands a lot. I came from highschool and don't have a degree in it (yet).
I recently wrote a piece of code which handles some timeslot logic. I was really proud of it.
New guy needs to fix a bug and add a few things. He completely refactors my code and makes it more structured and partly better. The logic stayed the same.
It sort of bothers me that he touches my (precious) code. How do you guys handle these things?22
!rant, need advice
I have no idea where to start with freelancing.
My girlfriend's been wanting to get some stuff but due to some issues hasn't been able to and has been extremely hesitant about bringing the topic up.
So to surprise her, I decided it'd be nice if I could freelance on the side and rake up some money so she can get the things she wants and I can spoil her (she's been through things and honestly deserves it).
So if you guys have any suggestions on where to start freelancing, that'd be great. I can do graphics and web design and just set up an anonymous Fiverr account but never had any luck with it.7
If there's something I fucking hate with all my goddamned soul is when you post something online and people get in their fucking high horse and judge you or tell you what to do
Like I understand if you're talking shit about people in the same community, then if someone tells you you're an idiot, I get it.
But if you're ranting about someone off site, then why judge this person? What's the damage being caused to you or the site?
For example, let's say I rant about my wife and the things that annoy me about her, and I use some colorful language to get it off my chest.
There's always one motherfucker, one stupid piece of shit that says something out of line.
In general it's one of these things:
* "wow, you need to calm down, you clearly treat her like shit, she is better than you*
YOU IGNORANT PIECE OF DOGSHIT. DO YOU HAVE CAMERAS IN MY HOUSE AS TO ASSUME THAT I TALK TO HER IN THE SAME MANNER AS I DID IN THIS POST?
YOU GULLIBLE SHIT EATER.
OF FUCKING COURSE I DON'T TALK TO HER LIKE THIS. I'M NOT AN ASSHOLE OR A MONSTER. I AM JUST R-A-N-T-I-N-G.
AND I RANT IN THIS MANNER SO AS TO GET IT OFF MY CHEST AND NOT FIGHT WITH HER. AND IT TENDS TO WORK. DOES IT REALLY NEED TO BE EXPLAINED?
Jaysus fucking christ. These people actually have the imagination of a fish, they can't fucking connect the dots.
Judging someone online is an egotistical thing. People like to judge others because of that morality high. It's the snack of the morally lazy.
Repeat with me: "I am flawed too, I have problems too. I should never judge others easily, let alone without full fucking context".
* "op, you should do <terrible advice>"
these ones are better, because they are trying to help, but still annoying as fuck.
they come in two forms:
old smug and condescending washed up idiots who overrate their life lessons and think they are applicable to every person A PRIORI.
yeah, fuck case by case analysis, these dinosaurs think they're the wise elders of the village.
Age does not immediately mean your advices are valid, your advices are valid on the sole merit of being valid by themselves.
I don't give 2 fucks if you're 60 or 120. If your advices are bullshit, please spare me the idiocy and the lack of case analysis.
I had old people tell me "trust me kid, happy wife, happy life" wtf is that shit? MY WIFE IS NOT YOUR WIFE.
YOU DON'T KNOW MY WIFE. MY WIFE IS ACTUALLY COOL, BUT SHE COULD BE AN ACTUAL PSYCHO AND I COULD BE OMITTING THAT FROM MY POST.
THEREFORE, HAPPY WIFE HAPPY LIFE IS A TERRIBLE THING TO SAY.
This reminds of that disgusting reddit post where a father asked advice on /r/relationships about her wife, and people told him "dude, duh, divorce her".
Guess what, she ends up murdering both of her children.
You would think such post would serve a lesson as to be careful giving advice online. But no, people think they're fucking dr phil or something with EXTREMELY LITTLE case knowledge.
People need to talk a bit less and listen a whole lot more.
You want to know how to help a person who is expressing problems?
You want to know how to be REALLY conpassionate?
Just listen. You can give minimal advice, but listening is the most important, with some occasional "i feel you man".
Everytime a journalist asks a suicide disuader what do they do, they always say the same " i just listen to their problems".
ITS NOT FUCKING ROCKET SCIENCE FOLKS. YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW TO BE A GOOD PERSON? CLOSE THE MOUTH AND TAKE THE WAX OUTTA YA EARS.
There's also the younger ones who think they can help when they don't even have no experience at all.
This is being naive, but I Iike that more than the smugness of old people.12
Guys, I have an interview Friday to a company I don't necessarily want to work for but I need the job because I just finished a coding boot camp not too long ago. What are some templates for Fintech, business macho companies that I can work on? Also, my resume sucks ass. Any advice is appreciated.6
I have a programming tutorials website I built from scratch in the PHP framework Laravel 5.4. Recently my friends have been pushing me to use WordPress instead.
I haven't worked with WordPress yet but I just hate it. I always think that it will not give me the flexibility I might need when adding new features.
This has put me in great doubt and anxiety about what I'm doing.
Is wordpress a better choice? I'm I just being lazy about the WordPress stuff?
I'll appreciate any advice on this.7
First time posting. But I need an advice, I want to learn a programming language to get a better job. I have just the basics of C#, should I keep going with C# or go with F#? I heard a lot of good thing about F#. Thanks. You guys are awesome!6
Hey. Can I borrow your ears for 5 minutes?
Since I've been out of school, I've often felt that even though I've learned how to code, the education went into a totally direction than the one I want to go. Of course a school can't teach you everything perfectly, but having almost no experience in frontend (mind you we learned the BAREST basics) just makes me feel entirely empty in that regard stepping up to a company. I've been pretty loaded during school, since I was struggling with a lot of things so I couldn't really find myself pursueing the direction of coding frontend apps being fun. I needed the little time I had to blow off steam playing games etc.
So the few things I know are all self taught, but I was never given a hand been shown best practices or solid advice where to look. Sitting down now at my pc trying to learn ReactJS for example feels incredibly draining and difficult, since we've never done JS in school ONCE. All the C# experience barely helps, since with ES6 being rolled out parallel to "normal" JS it's even harder to me to connect the lego blocks that is frontend development. Since many best practices are applied to ES6, I can barely even tell what previous practice they are replacing, making the entire picture even more spongy. In one sentence it's very overwhelming.
I've thought I'd apply maybe as a UX/UI Designer since I've got a great visual sense (confirmed countlessly by many, friends and strangers alike) maybe contributing to the frontend part that way. But as I was applying I've noticed that chances are seemingly pretty low to get accepted since it seems you've got zero reputition if you don't have a degree in Design.
It breaks me apart. I could probably apply as a frontend developer, but I am not sure if I would be happy doing that on the long run. Since just fucking around in Photoshop creating things seems like no effort and brings me joy, as compared to coding out lines for example.
I wanted to make money after school, improve on myself and my quality of life since I've drained that entirely for the sake of my education. Not spiral into another couple years just to eventually maybe get in the direction I want to.
On the flipside going into frontend dev with 0 skills, 0 experience, but being expected to have 2 years of hands on experience with the newest frameworks makes me feel empty and worthless.
I often hand out advice to other people on devRant, but this is the one time where I need some. Desperately. I feel shattered inside, getting out of bed in the morning has no incentive to me since I'll just feel like shit all day, watching YouTube to cheer me up temporarily, only to feel immense remorse not spending the day learning or improving on myself. Barely anything brings me joy. I don't wanna call myself depressive, but maybe I am just dodging the term and I am exactly that.
Thanks If you've read through this monstrosity of a rant/story. I'd be glad if you'd be so kind to give me a different take on my situation or a new perspective.
I am stepping on the spot and I am slowly dying inside because of it.
It dreads me to say it, but I need help.12
So i am stuck, i have assignments to complete, i know what i need to do, but every single time i sit down to write them up, my mind goes blank and i get extremely fustrated any advice? thanks.5
I've just started my new career with a job in IT operations and I love it. After my electrical engineering degree I fell into a job as a website manager for a small company, I self taught html and css and I knew from then that I had found a job that didn't feel like a job. I'm excited to learn everything I need to know to progress as far as I can go in this industry. In my first few weeks at this new job (where i have my own office!) I've self taught python to create automation scripts for live projects, currently up to my eyeballs trying to figure out how to change the VB code for an excel module.....Then there have been so many other projects and bugs and I love it! Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated!2
Hey guys, I've always loved and adored what programmers and developers do, so I really do need your advice on this...
After around nine years in the journalism field, I'm considering a career shift into development, for many reasons including that the journalism field seems to be going down in my country, so I started where most recommendations would tell a beginner to start, learning HTML... Now, is it a good idea for starters to change my career into this magnificent and enormous field? I know it won't be easy, but is it possible to be something in that career?6
I HAVE A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION.
i need advice.
is it better that i study during the day for college until 12pm (midnight) and then work on my own project from 12pm till 4-5am, go to sleep and wake up around 9-10am so thats 4-7h of sleep each day. the only exception would be tuesday bc i gotta wake up for college at 6am.
so i would be working on my project 6 days for about 4-5h per week.
i plan to do this for 2 months.
so: day shift - college study
night shift - my work
please help me organize my time.
now, im thinking about long term effects on this. its going to be pain. but i am in pain each day so i no longer feel pain. i will be exhausted as fuck. i am fully conscious of what is awaiting for me if i decide to do this.
here is my question. am i going to get a burnout from this? am i going to look physically different in 2 months (in a bad way)? am i going to be mentally worse? am i going to get really skinny? this would basically be a work of 19-20h for 6 days per week for 2 months. that is approximately 114-120h work week minus tuesday.
i have to be mentally equipped for this so i plan to do home workouts in night shift session in order to prevent burnouts. I'll do walks/jogs too in day shift for mental cooldowns. the most important thing for me is NOT TO GET A BURNOUT AT ALL COSTS DURING THIS PERIOD OF TIME NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
i need serious advice on how to do this right AND AVOID BURNOUTS AT ALL COST.
i MUST stay operational mentally for the next 2 months.
please list the things i should DO and NOT do so this can be achievable.16
Not a rant, I need advice on something.
There is this game that I used to play as a kid, a PC game. It's an indie game, very unpopular, but I really liked it back then and I think it would probably be successful on the mobile platform.
So, I tried to contact the guy who made it to ask him if he would make a mobile version but had no success, he didn't reply the email and I couldn't find him anywhere else (twitter, facebook, linkedin). I found a github page with his name but his last contribution was in feb/2015.
The game is REALLY old, the installer executable dates 2004.
So I was thinking that perhaps I could remake the game myself and launch it, maybe with different levels, etc, but giving credits to the guy who originally made it. And I'd include ads somewhere to get a little income for myself.
Question is, would it be anti-ethical of me to do it? I mean, the guy who made the game doesn't seems to care for it anymore since there were no more mentions of it anywhere, and the last version is 1.01.
I just wanted advice from you guys, I'd be really glad to see the game running on mobile because it was a fun part of my childhood.7
So, I am working in this small company (9 employees - 2 developers me inclusive) in the Netherlands, already for 8 months. My responsibilities are mostly back-end development with PHP, but sometimes they ask me to do front-end apps too or even mobiles apps (with react js/native). And I have 4 years of experience. At the moment, I am responsible for 5 projects. In fact, if I quit, company is going to have a lot of problems, because no one can overtake my projects, they will need to hire someone else.
So, I get 1950euros/month, which is really low for developer with my skills in the NL (I agreed on this, because at the time I really needed the job and I am not a good negotiator), and I feel like the company is taking advantage of me. But from the other side, I like my colleagues, bosses and the projects I work with, they are awesome, comparing to my prior experience. I even get the freedom to experiment with new technologies.
So I am going to ask for a raise, but is there a limit for how much should I ask? I would like to get at least 2.5k, which is already 30% increase, but salary.com says I should get 4k. So, I wonder isnt it a little too much?
I never asked for a raise before, so I would really appreciate some advice.1
I get pissy when people don't use linters, then I just spent ages super confused why the data wasn't loading in my component, then realised I hadn't decorated my class and I've been ignoring the red underline for the past half hour.
Seriously need to follow my own advice.
btw fellow gentoo users, what are your opinions about it? What advice do you have for noobs? My Black Friday E585 Thinkpad is coming in a few weeks and I'm thinking about switching distros.
Used to use Arch, recently I've been using Artix with runit as the alternative init system. I need something simple and systemd free, and I think gentoo would scratch that itch.7
I need a bit of advice, I'm looking to rent a dedicated server for dev and test small projects and maybe host a site in the future but mainly a box I can access from everywhere and constantly online
I checked out ovh and server4you but I wanted real experience from a community I can trust, any recommendations?9
Need some advice, which charging model is most beneficial nowadays? (for a mobile game):
1. Pay for full app
2. Free download and in-app purchase(s)
3. Free download and ads (pay to remove?)
So the class I TA is learning how to use heroku for website testing. It is going up on fire because of a shit tonne of errors everywhere. The professor is adamant heroku is what is used nowadays for testing (over using FTP) so we will have to help 200+ people troubleshoot without knowing much ourselves.
My question is what are some other modern website testing mechanisms? Preferably some that have retard proofing in them.3
I actually need a bit of advice here. As some of you may know of you've read any of my previous rants, I'm in my first development job. I've been learning for around 18 months in my spare time and the job has been crazy so far. My boss isn't tech at all and he's very demanding but the opportunity to learn and earn is huge here.
My issue is the fact that he is CONSTANTLY trying to talk to me through every day. I get texts, emails, WhatsApp, Facebook and if I don't reply immediately I get several messages and a "You need to communicate better" message soon after. I'm fucking sick of it. If I'm busy, if I'm WORKING, I don't look at my phone. I can't communicate constantly and it's even on weekends and evenings he expects me to respond immediately.
My gut is telling me to quit. I've been here three months and I'm already feeling burned out. I've had to learn a lot of C#/ASP.NET and now Python/Django within a matter of weeks at best. He doesn't understand how difficult that is or how impossible it is to expect someone to do that who's been learning for such a short amount of time.
I guess my question is, do I just quit? And if so, how do I go about doing so in the best manner?5
Need some advice again. I'm a junior backend developer or that's at least what I try to call myself.
For the first year at this company I did a lot of backend which I love and really enjoy, eventually they let me do devops and migrations. Okay, but not really what I wanted.
And fucking today I heard they wanted me on support mostly, isolated from the rest into another room with the (dumb) zero experience trainee.
I honestly don't know what to say? Should I refuse? I do have some power because they accepted 3 other projects which require my expertise with migrations. Like why don't they use me were I'm good at, backend?2
Hey guys! So I need advice/strategy’s on how to let someone go in your life. It all started when I became friends with this person through other mutual friends, at first I didn’t even think twice about him. But now we started talking more and I realize he’s funny and nice, however, he does do some pretty bad things I don’t agree with. And whenever we are in public he ignores me and goes off with my other friends, how do I stop stressing about this. I really just want to let go of this person and move on, go back to not even thinking twice about him. I need help on how to do this, thank you so much for your time and advice.5
Tldr; Do not go to the bathroom when you are stuck on a problem.
Most of you will know that when you are stuck on a problem for a while, that it is worth to take a break to look at the problem with a fresh pair of eyes.
It's good advice and I have been doing it for years, however now I have developed a problem with it.....
I don't drink coffee or tea often so when I'm stuck I always take a bathroom break and most of the time an Idea will pop into my head how to solve the problem.
The problem now is that everytime when I am even a little bit stuck I need to go to the bathroom even when I just went.
It's really annoying because now I need to find something else to use as a break because my brain has associate being stuck with needing to go to the bathroom.
It's probably not a good idea to take a coffee break instead because if my brain starts to associate that I will be a coffee addict in no time.... Haha
Do any of you have a good suggestion to use as a break?8
I was trying to format my backup drive (/dev/sdb)
Was focused on eating also at the same time
Wrote sudo fdisk /dev/sda and didn't notice and changed the partition type to GPT(although it was already like that)
I gave me message that will do on next reboot
My dumb mind didn't suspect, instead rebooted (facepalm)
Lost all my data
Instead of trying to recover was quick to install OS
Permanently lost my data
Help me I need hopes and tricks to move on
How did you cope up with yourself once you lost all your data?2
Need a bit of advice please!
I'm hiring a dev to complete a personal project. It's basically a modified CRM that needs to sync with desktop, tablets and mobiles. They suggested using React. Does that seem appropriate? Thanks in advance :)4
Ok guys n gals, I really need help with this one. I have been offered a position at a company with a nice salary but I really don't feel the company's product, furthermore I think that the industry cut they are working in is one of the most boring ones. Thus taking this job will mean that I will be turning on almost everything I believe. Another thing is that I will have to relocate to a town that I really don't like.
On the plus side the team looks great. Everyone seems really friendly and I am certain that I will gain a lot of experience. Also I'm a recent grad and I've been looking for a position for a couple of months. I know that this looks like a dumb dilemma but for me it's not. I'd really appreciate your advice..8
I keep posting that I need job and I appreciate the feedback but I feel just saying that makes it seem like I'm not trying.
Like. I legit don't know. Could it be my cv that's a dud? Thinking of paying a resume writing thing
Cause I'm actually trying hard af to learn new stuff as well keep doing what I'm good at.
I got one interview in a year and even then they didn't gimme the chance to show tech side. It's soo tilting.
I'm actually competent though inexperienced I think.
Any advice or questions please. I legit need to sort this out this year. Like its very important that I do.
Hello guys, I really need some advice today...
I'm currently 18. I got accepted in two pretty equivalent colleges. One is in my city, 1h with the bus, and the other one is in another city.
Both are somewhat equivalent schools, the one in another big city is much nearer to other colleges I'd like to go to later (this one will last 2 years, then I'll have to go to engineering school for 3 years).
I have to decide monday where I'll go. It's horrible.. here, in my city, I have the person I love and the comfort of living by the parents (even tho it's a discomfort too). But the other city attracts me a lot too, independance does too.. it's horrible, I can't decide, I don't know if it's a good idea to leave, and I fear having regrets if I stay.
Have you some experience to tell me about? Some regrets you have? Or basically some advice?
It would help me so much, thank you!!8
Need advice with buying a notebook.
I fell in love with the Lenovo X1 Carbon.
It comes with a FHD display, WQHD and a 4K OLED.
I thought about getting the 4K OLED to safe battery since I’m dev and everything is dark anyway.
However, the internet says, that using 4K, drains the battery quickly and for long battery life one should get the FHD.
So I wonder, which one has more impact: 4times the pixels or pixels just barley illuminated...
Maybe someone has experiences with that :)12

Any responses are appreciated! Thank you so much!11
Has any of you ever felt like you were going straight towards a burnout if you keep doing your actual job but consequently don't have any energy left during spare time to learn something new, new skills you would need to land a better job? Think changing programming "branch".
How/what did you do? I'm thinking of trying to get my boss to let me work less hours... But I honestly don't know if it would be enough.
Sorry for the downer post, I'll be back with shit my colleagues say soon enough ;)4
need some advice
i resigned from my job today , it was my first job worked 2 years here.
i kinda wanted to rest a month or two is it a good decision or i should look for new one immediately10
Any professional pentesters or someone working in cybersecurity as a profession? I need some advice. The company I intern with right now wants me to test their web applications for security (they really don't care so much about security). I just wanted to know is there a standard set of procedures or a checklist that is usually followed? I know automated testing is not all that effective against web applications but what are the steps you usually take?
As of now, I have run tests and am now performing a code review but it's in PHP and I'm not really good with it. I'd like to know what more is done as a standard please.2
So, like probably for 3 years already, I had this open source project idea for cli tool that would increase development productivity. Since then I partially implemented it 2 times already.
First time was in elixir, but I abandoned it, because it haven’t fit my requirements.
Second time, i tried golang, I felt in love with language, but I missed some stable dependencies that I didn’t want to implement myself, so I abandoned it before I started.
Third time, I chose python, it had everything I needed, and I am already halfway finished the implementation. But I lost all motivation, so I haven’t done anything for the last 2 months, and reason for that is that I don’t really enjoy writing python code and also I wasn’t sure how to structure everything.
Now I am originally php developer, and I kind of convinced myself that php is not a good language to implement cli tool and yet I feel that I would like to start over again in php. I know the language inside out, I know how to structure everything and so I can be way more productive in it.
Also, one more reason I didn’t pick up php was distribution, when I am finished, I would like everyone to use this tool, even outside php and I believe it’s not easy with php. Consumers would need to install php, perhaps composer too and knowing php reputation that could be drawback.
Anyway, I feel depressed about this project and I am not sure how I should approach this issue which exists only in my mind, I would like to hear what you have to say.15
Heyy friends :-) Milo here once again, i hope everyone is having an absolutely amazing day as always and I really hope the upcoming week ahead brings everyone the best ☺️.

So in my free time over the next couple of weeks I’m really planning on gaining a better understanding of algorithms , I’d love some input from
Anyone and any advice I’d highly appreciate!, currently i have a book called introduction to algorithms third addition sitting on my desktop and I’ve been reading some of that 😃..
So ladies and gents, once again thank you for taking the time to read my
Rambling and long post.. i just have a habit of rambling on 😄.. my bad , once again - thank you!
[Seeking Advice / Legal / Opinion]
Hello world, (TLDR at the bottom)
I'm the co-founder of a small startup and looking for advice from people of legal background or similar situations. (Any help making the reddit post more active will also help a lot: https://reddit.com/r/legaladvice/...)
Just as a backstory for better understanding:
a couple of years ago, me (early twenties, male) and another guy (late thirties, male) started an entrepreneurial journey, got in an accelerator program and some investment, and things always looked well.
We opened the company and started working / selling our services. Step by step we started recruiting, and getting some clients, and business is going well... ("well" as in, small revenues but not spending more than we earn).
The thing is that me and my co-founder's relationship has been degrading over time and I think it would be better for us and the company to split up and go our own way. He has the majority of the shares and I don't mind leaving it all behind for the sake of the company and mental health.
This is in US, if it helps, and we both have At-Will employment contracts.
My main question is, *if I do sign a termination contract*, from what I read, I'm obliged to remain reachable for a period of 12 months (plus all those IP related stuff, not sharing confidential info, etc).
Is there anything I should be careful about and get some kind of protection or get some more information before resigning?
I'm afraid that if I leave the company it affects the business negatively, as we both work 16 / 20 hour shifts many times and my work would not be easily replaced by anyone in the current team. We are hiring more people right now, and some seniors, and I was thinking on staying one month dedicated only to training them... Could this be specified in some contract that I am resigning from "today", but stay 30 days focusing on training new people, or anything similar?
I don't mind staying in touch and help whenever they could need, but I will not be available 24/7 and I will obviously need a job to pay living expenses, so I don't want to affect negatively my time in other jobs or personal life and be kind of protected against anything that he could do to make me stay continuously connected or compromised.
I'm interested in knowing any opinions and advice you guys may have, and feel free to ask some questions if you need extra details.
I just want the best for the startup but cannot hold much time in the current environment.
TLDR: Relationship between me and co-founder is getting worse, thinking on resignating but want to keep some sort of protection against anything that could make me keep compromised to the company.7
Need some advice.
A few programmers told me when I started programming that instead of learning many languages, just focus on one that I am comfortable with and try to get really good at it.
But when I look at other people's resumes or Devrant profiles, most of them have multiple languages in their skill set.
That's why I have been exploring different languages but haven't found the one yet that I think I like the best.
What should I do now? Explore more?6
So guys at the moment Im working at a medical company as a business temp but I really like it here. At the moment they know me as the tech guy. I want to be the official systems administrator here but don't know how to go about doing that.
I have a strong Linux background but everyone here uses windows.
I think that they need a server but I don't think I can just go up to my boss and say "hey, I know I'm not certified yet but hows about you give me money so I can set up a server for you?"
I need advice.5
Okay I'm back to Dev Rant tho it still looks new and confusing sometimes, maybe because I'm new to programming world. Well I need some type of advice , I like web development, I started learning PHP (I know it an old language but it all I can help myself with, by learning). Is there any thing I'm missing? Any link on improving my skills ?
I will be glad to learn a lot from the senior developers on here . I really want to go wide into programming I'm ready for the challenges because I know the path isn't always easy!!
Thanks in advance10
Got placed at LnT Infotech through my college placements
Free-lanced at a company for four months and got a job offer from them with the same salary. But the work load is too much. There is no such thing as personal time. It's work 24*7. However, the exposure is good. For one of the projects I was the PM. Had dinner good exposure. But as I said, to much work. I lost quite some weight in the one month that I was the PM.
So now the problem is, should I join an MNC where my exposure will be terrible or a start-up where my personal life will be terrible3

Some clever b*****ds wrecked a section of our production mysql db. To fix it I need to rollback the affected records 2 weeks - around 50/300 tables are affected, the other data must remain intact.
Currently my plan is to take a 2 week old dump and cherry pick the data I need from it, then combine it with a dump of the db in it's current state, drop the db and recreate it.
I know this approach will work - but it's risky, a pain in the ass and dealing with 300mb text files is tedious so since I only need to start in around 8 hours I figured It wouldn't hurt to post my approach and see if anyone thinks my plan is borderline retarded.
If you have any advice .etc that will make my life easier I would greatly appreciate it.
So in your opinion...
- is there a better/safer way?
- do you know of any db dump merge tools?
- have a recommended (linux) text editor for large text files?
- have you made any personal mistakes/fuck ups in the past you think I should avoid?
- am I just being a moron and overthinking this?
- if I am being a moron - In your humble opinion has the time come for me to give up all hope and pursue my dream of becoming a professional couch surfer?
Note: Alternatively, if your just pissed that my rant is asking for a solution instead of simply trashing the people that created my situation and your secretly wishing it was on SO where it belongs so you can moderate/edit/downvote/mark the shit out it, feel welcome to troll me in the comments (getting dev advice just doesn't feel reliable without a troll - you matter to me). Afterwards If your panties are still in a bunch I'll post it on SO and dm a link to you to personally moderate - my days already fucked and I wouldn't want to ruin yours too.4
Part of my remote work is to have a daily call reporting in on what I have done yesterday and what I am about to today. My colleague calls me for it. She's hired as a tech support and is suddenly assigned to take note and report on my work activities to our boss. Several times, I caught her pretending to know what I'm talking about like with Puppet configurations, Firewall diagnosis packets, ActiveMQ, Regex, etc. Most of the time, I just let it go as its not my job to validate her knowledge on these different but many services. Just do the call, get the report in, carry on. How difficult was that?
Yesterday, our call was left sour because I somehow blew up. I think I've reached my patience with this woman's assumptions to how these services work. Now I feel guilty for yelling at a lady but goddamn she stoopid for fibbing through my ear. Somebody help! What do I do?
If I report to our boss about her technical incompetence (politely), she might get sacked. She's a good tech support as long as she still has her trusty manuals by her, she can fix specific problems. But when it comes to unknown tech to her, she assumed she knew.
If I tell her about her weaknesses, however constructive I can get and as politely as I can get, all the while complimenting something about her, showing her how to improve herself, maybe she'll do better not to ask silly questions like buying a Puppet certificate? At least getting rid of ignorance would definitely help but not sure how she would take it. The worst thing I would imagine is her backfiring and yelling at me and then we ended up fighting.
If I kept quiet and tuck it all into a can, it will eventually implode as we go on.
This is not about her gender. I don't see her as a woman. I see her as a tech support engineer who should know her stuff.1
Im a new self taught programmer and i need some advice on where i should go next to become a web developer.
I already know python and c#.
I learned html, css, js, php, sql.
What else can i learn?19
I have this fried that gives me some advice on how to find work, he said i need to come up with a project idea as something to put on my CV and also as a way to learn front-end dev.
Easy enough if not for the fact that this project should be something that's actually useful and has some concept behind it (like, something that might seemingly work for a startup)
I've been raking my brain for a week now, and all i can come up with is small meme projects, neat but sort of inconsequential experiments, or things that might be useful to me but have no reason to be web-based.
I never realized how hard it is for me to come up with professional-sounding project ideas :D
I'm just not that kind of guy, i don't really have the drive or motivation to do anything professional: If people wanna use my rice or whatever spaghetti software i create they are welcome to, i'll even write them some documentation, but its just kinda out there on the internet because i like sharing. I don't really have any grand product ideas, nor do i really care about what other people think or need.3
So I’m in a bit of a pickle.
I’ve become involved with a pretty fast paced group project. We’ve got 9 weeks to write up a mock PDR and all of the communication is done through Discord and teleconferences. As of last week an issue came up where one of the teammates (Black) felt accused by Red of being called authoritative and feels disrespected by the following message: “I don't know if I'm picking up on it correctly, but it feels like you want to control every situation. I feel like you're trying to take on a part of everyone's role so that you also need more people a part of each sub category. I think whatever happened is done whether we did turn it in late or not, I don't think we need to pressure others to do more that is needed. Also, Project Manager's dad passed. Not to make it an excuse, but I think it should be taken into consideration. Also, we didn't even verify all the positions til the meeting we had. So even still, we would have had to turn it in late since there were so many arrangements
If you don't trust your other members to do their job without having to be supervised, it can be counterintuitive to the whole teamwork aspect.” This message was sent after we missed a deadline to submit a team organization chart and Black team member insisted on becoming a third Assistant Project manager while making it seem as the other 2 APM’s were incompetent at their job.
Although I agree that it is difficult to communicate all of your emotions through written messages, I still think that taking your tone into consideration is crucial when working remotely. Am I wrong? Is there a better way to work with this team member? It’s still very early on in the project and this is the first time I’m working on a project with others with very little face to face communication. Typically when similar issues became present in other group projects, we would all sit down and discuss it and try to reach an agreement (or at least an understanding of where everyone is come from). Any advice is seriously appreciated.13
Need some advice. I'm 19, working on my own fintech startup. Should I apply to Ycombinator or finish high school first? The prototype is basically ready, but the Winter 2018 YC is taking place while I have school. What should I do?8
Guys, I need some advice.
A couple of weeks ago I finished my internship as a sys admin in this medium sized consulting company. When my "contract" was about to expire they offered me a real job doing the same thing I've been doing for the past few months, but I turned it down.
The reason why I did it was that I wasn't really happy with the job. I mean, the people were... fine, the management team was... fine, the actual work I needed to do was... fine. I think you get the idea. The problem was that I never really enjoyed it all that much, and even though I didn't hate it, I wasn't really happy with it, so I turned the offer down.
After giving it more thought and listening to what some of my friends and family members had to say, I started thinking that maybe it was a bad idea to do so. Many people have said to me that I'm making a mistake, that I shouldn't leave a job before I have a new one, and that I should take the offer, work there for a little while and then look for something else.
I always answer by saying that the job market in this field is much more simple, and that it's much easier to find a new job than in any other, but yet again, I'm not sure if I'm making a big mistake with this decision.
PS: I'm 21, this would be my first job ever7
iPhone alarm clock suddenly stopped playing sounds this week (again), fortunately my wake up time is not critical.
After every major osx upgrade I feel that I need to restart macbook more and more often cause system suddenly hangs.
Yesterday I spotted that after each restart there is information that if system hangs on login screen for a while I should restart computer again ( well thanks for advice that I don’t have to wait till I die ).
Cursor randomly disappears after I connected microsoft usb mouse ( microsoft mouse eating cursor from apple windows ).
Why I use microsoft mouse you ask ? That’s the best thing microsoft made, it’s literally indestructible. I dropped and kicked that mouse hundred times, still works perfectly fine.
I think also somehow osx forced minor bug fix upgrade once without my permission so they’re slowly going the forgotten microsoft path that is always forcing updates you don’t want to install in this particular moment.
Because their engineers know better when and why I want to update.
Looks like Apple engineering is slowly degrading or QA care less about older hardware users.
I am not used to buy new shit when old works just fine, those shiny little things are my work tools not something I show around to impress people how cool I am.
That’s all disappointing but still better then windows experience cause didn’t reinstalled osx from scratch since almost 5 years and it’s working at the same speed like it was new ( not impressed linux users here but from my previous experience with windows “registry” that means something and this hardware already paid for itself).11
I need advice. I want to build new pc and i can get i7-4770k for 100 €, but one thing that turns me down about that is older socket. Should i go for it ? Or should i get something with new architecture ?7
Hi guys! I feel like i am a lot of topic here😅 But i am looking for some advice. Next year i am an graduate, and in Norway that means PARTYING STRAIGHT THROUGH MAY. It is called a "russefeiring": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Anyway, i am in a group of 6 "russ"es, and we are aiming to get a car for this celebration. Actually there are two "devs" other than me in the group, although they swear by Lua, and only Lua. Besides the point... I am looking for tips on where to get sponsors, because we need some money to fund this car. There are none of us in the group that have parents able to provide us money, and it has become harder over the years to get local business to sponsor the "russ", as they are focusing more on other other groups (which is understandable).
Does anyone know of some company or something that could be interested in making a deal with some Norwegian "russ"? I don't really have good ideas for what we could do for them, only like, logos on the car/clothes and stuff. But we are open to the most freakish suggestions!3
!rant, but not sure if it's a question either.
I've kind of run into a wall when it comes to programming lately. I'm following this course on Udemy for Python, but the next section (that I need to do to be able to continue) uses (outdated) bokeh stuff, and I don't know enough to be able to figure out how to get the same output without much hair-tearing and frustration.
To clarify, the videos uses bokeh.charts, but then there's a note added that says to use bkcharts, which is still outdated, so it doesn't help at all. I did contact the course tutor about it, and he is aware of it but he's got a lot of stuff going on, so I don't know when he'll have time to fix it. In the meantime, I'm stuck and severely lacking in the intellectual stimulation that is programming. :(
I -have- been trying to work on independent projects, but my problem is mostly that I just don't seem to be a frontend kinda guy, so I end up with only halfway-finished stuff. Does any poor soul here have advice on where to look, or (less likely) even have time to explain some stuff?2
Need job advice:
I love where I work but I just had an interview which a much bigger company that is offering 25k more!
m so nervous that they'll call me back with the next steps for speaking to the CTO that I almost just wish they wouldn't. I dont know if thats me actually not wanting this job or just so nervous about leaving my job I love for a newer position that Id rather not bother with it.
Regarless, my family needs the money and Id never make the same where im at. Any advice?9
Question for web devs. I have to manage a simple php website and I am tired of filezilla+notepad++ combo. I need something more modern. Tried visual studio code+simple ftp integration but it doesn't seem to download some of the folders. Can you advice any other alternative?13
Need some advice
I haven't really dived into Linux much but know my way around it.
I've tried Ubuntu and fedora but like to try more. Following are the ones most appealing to me after Googling
-Semicode os - comes with a lot of development related packages pre installed. Like a lot of them.
If anyone has tried any of them please share your experience.
I want to move to Linux the more I use Windows.18
You know, in my limited experience, I find the whole CS degree debate to be quite unnerving. I mean, if you can teach yourself to be a computer genius, I greatly respect you. You're really going placed. Sadly though, learning everything on my own is a bit of a challenge for me. I just find this whole degree-holding VS non-degree-holding conversation to be very confusing. I'm currently enrolled in a 4-year CS program. I personally have learned more there iny first week than I have in months on my own. Now I know all too well that development is often more of a craft or a trade than it is a typical procedural job, but I'm honestly really anxious because I have half of the world telling me to pursue a degree (which I am) and I have the other half telling me to gain experience (which I did). The thing that is stressing me out is the continual pressure to do all of one option instead of a little of both. My life is changing faster than the tech industry, and boy is it a bumpy ride. So unless there is good advice to be said regarding the path you take to become an amazing developer, why fight over the need for a CS degree?9
Hey DevRant Fam, hope everyone is doing very very well of course, once again id like to apologize for my lack of activity, but i'd love to get some great advice from you guys!
Im nearly going into my last semester in which i will be going into my internship!, and recently id love to be open with everyone i got some harsh feedback, which is the first time ever someone opened up to me on this level... i was told that unfortuneately if i wanted to work in such a space as HFT or trading software i really need to up my game in problem solving.. i was told i do struggle to solve problems and personally i do understand how he got to that conclusion because it is the truth that it does take me longer to learn some concepts and its fine :-).
But i'll never give up learning something!, so my internship will be in either Web Development or Front end development, i have not touched base on web dev or front end development because i been heavily working on C# and Java (Android), i'd very much appreciate if someone could give me some great tips of getting back into web dev or front end, im very excited but nervous!.
also guys sorry i do ramble a lot.... but that's just my nature!
Also any advice on internships?, because this is my actual first ever real job in terms of development... :D
I’d like so advice, sometimes I need to code for pretty much 2-3 days straight
I try to power nap on occasion as I know being tired can have a bit of an effect.
I need to stay alert so I was wondering what tips and tricks people may have to help
As I need to stay away from caffeine now 😒
Hoy to all!
I need advice for NNs.
I wanna make a chess engine that uses an NN. (see collabs)
I want the NN to output a probability for each move.
However, i dont know what data to train the NN with.
If i train it with the moves from an engine, it simulates an engine and that sucks.
If i train it from games, i only see one move, and thus, cant train the other moves.
My thougt is, that maybe, i let the NN play an entire game and if it loses, it adjusts itself somehow. But how?
If you wanna contribute, email me :firstname.lastname@example.org
Switched to new workplace and need new headphones for coding/work/going out.
Which model would you advice? Budget up to 100EUR. I've seen lots of ppl having Marshall headphones, are they any good?2
So, I moved to Bangalore after graduation this year and I am interning at a startup till Jan in Android Development. It's a six month internship. Everybody I meet gets surprised after hearing that I took up the internship even after graduation and that it's 6 months long.
I actually interviewed at a couple of places before accepting this internship and all those startups were like the next Facebook, the next Instagram, the next blah...Blah...Nothing new...And this opportunity felt like something where I would learn something new...
But as I meet people every now and then and as the financial ground below me keeps on shrinking, I keep on questioning my desicion.
BTW I am searching for good job opportunities but again can't find any exciting opportunity and the ones I find don't even give an opportunity for the interview...4
Has anyone here worked on news scraping?
I am currently doing my academic project where I need to scrap the news headlines. I have built scrappers for some news sources using their native API. I also tried using newsapi.org, but it returns only 10 results.
If anyone have worked on similar projects or know of their existence, some advice would be highly appreciated.4
Need some advice. How should I look for and join an active open source project?
I'm looking for Java/C#/backend. Not to big on JS... But definitely No Frontend web stuff6
!Rant - advice
Anyone know the best way to determine if slow reaction time on a website is down to my internet vs their shitty fucking wordpress template?
There's a Rant coming soon - but I need to make sure it really is their fault and not just crappy Internet because it's Sunday night and the whole town is watching Netflix9
There is a project: multi step form. It has login form, text field, date, upload. It is written in jQuery, Zend and oracle. I need to rewrite. I can use my familar jQuery, PHP skills. Or I can go for react redux, build API with Zend. The issue is that I only have 2 months. Very basic knowledge of react, redux webpack. So I need to learn and build the project. Should I go for new tech. I am not sure I can reach deadline, as there are many things to learn. Advice? If i use the new tech, how do I learn quickly?5
I need fast advice!
If i want to have a domain like instagram e.g.
What is the best way to define those routes? I am using only angular. Its just a landing page so no backend frameworks are needed or used.
So if i have about 50 first-last names (and i might add even a lot more), is it a good idea to create 50 different components in angular where each component links to the different person identity of those /first-lastnameN routes?
Or should i have only 1 component and loop through names from a list and display them somehow? Because i dont know how to do this way And change the URL route into a different name7
i need advice, is this a good database structure? this is a comments table with foreign keys to users and posts table. the post_id and user_id can be repeated a lot of times so i wondered if i missed something here. i kinda forgot the 1/2/3 normalized form rules, so can someone give me a quick refresh? is this current structure good or should i change it?4
Guys I need some advice. I have read some articles about sass and less. I now know sass is using Ruby and Less is using JS. Can somebody tells me the big differences of both and which is the better one to learn? (in your opinion) Thanks8
Wise people of devrant, I need career advice:
I got offered a contract by a french consulting company for my first job, but they also told me that they probably won't have a project for me untill April (because they have enough juniors for now and new positions probably won't open untill they get a new batch of projects.)
Needless to say I'm angry at myself for being such a noob but they are right :/
What would you do? I am still looking for other possibilities atm, but nothing too concrete has popped up yet besides these french guys: I got an offer for an unpaid intership that is waiting for a geen light, and a couple of other job interviews lined up for the next few weeks.
Also I currently live in denmark, so I would need to relocate to france come April.
I would be inclined to sign the contract anyway and return their kindness, as they could have just told me to fuck off and come back in 6 months, (at least they like me) but I don't know what is best in this situation...
Should I stick with them and wait, perhaps training myself in the mean time? Or do you think it would be better to pursue other options?5
This not a rant, but I want to ask you some advice from you the community.
Before that I want to tell you about me. I have an invisible handicap. I'm half-deaf. I have some moderately severe loss between ~500 - 3000 Hz. To give you some idea, its in the range of clock ticking, whispering, piano notes, pronounced letters (m, n, p, h, g, ch and sh sounds), leaves crushing or waving in the wind.
I use hearing aids, however I can't always count on those because if it's too loud (ex: airplane flying over the building), I can't hear the voices that are speaking in that moment. Or sometimes the tubes where the augmented sounds are passing to my ear are repleted because of humidity. So I don't hear 100% better but rather in the range of ~70 - 80%.
I'm going to need to do an internship next year to finish my studies. Since I will take interviews, I want to ask you if I should mention those details to my interviewer or keep it very simple and tell him that I use hearing aids?
I ask you this because I know people with hearing aids had problems to find a workplace because the interviewers feared the "unknown". Some needed to sign up for help for handicapped people to receive a workplace. For them it is a downside because they are tagged as "handicapped" in society.
I know here are some interviewers and I wanted to know some advice from them as well from you guys of the community.
If you want to know more about hearing loss, feel free to ask questions.3
So guys. I need some help here. I'm watching a YouTube series called 'Coding Math', and the guy uses JS. I primarily use C#. So, I was wondering if anyone had some advice on what to do...keep using C#, or learn JS? I know JS gets a hard wrap for being so...vast... In its number of libraries, and I know C# has some annoying quirks, too.3
The project my company agreed to work with 1 year ago is totally shitty.
We basically use Python 2, Tornado, MySQL and driver for it from 2005, custom made "ORM" where you have to write SQL in strings in Python, custom asynchronous service that runs jobs and all such...
The rest of the team writes code really badly and only after a year of fucking with this shit we made them do pull requests.
I became totally neurotic because of the shit I have to go through daily at work. I do not develop myself, no new things I have learned in the past year or so. What do I do, devrant? What is your advice?2
Need some advice on which university to choose in melbourne for bachelor of software engineering1
My goal was to eventually get to grad school in CS. I found some programs what accept students from non CS back grounds too. I can’t do BD again it will take too long. And I’m old ! lol
If any of you had similar experiences, or know some good programs would you let me know? Should I prepare portfolio or should I accomplish something great in order to get accepted? Or should I just try applying first? I’m focusing more on east coast to choose schools from but open to anything for now.
It’s quite scary to really start working on this since I already have a job and there are so much information regarding grad school, I get overwhelmed. Though it’s something i need to overcome. It would be really helpful for me if you could share your two cents.
I love what I do now, and really hope that I get to study further and explore in depth. Also I’m interested in AI or machine learning. Also if you know good source for reading recently published papers on CS let me know!
Thanks for reading! :)11
I'm taking data structures and algorithm analysis class at college but don't know how to study... I need advice, by the way the language we're using is c++9
I need to figure out a way uniquely identify each computer which visits the web site I am creating. Does anybody have any advice on how to achieve this?
I appreciate the help. Thanks.
Cookies will not do.17
Just need a bit of advice here.
Background: I'm good with backend web development. Won't say I'm really good, but yeah, I've done it quite a bit and built few sites locally.
At this point, I wanna know if I should continue learning and get really good with PHP (maybe get certifications). Or, start learning Python and try frameworks like Django or Flask. Also, this coming summer, I wanna do some kinda internship but before that I need to be good with something.
Some advice would help :D
Thanks and happy new year!3
My advice: simply code and work out things on the fly.
You will maybe need to rewrite something, but thats ok. The more you do on the fly, the better!5
Any mobile games dev here? I want to create a game (not too complex) with Unity and i need some advices (any advice would be nice)11
So sick of my coworker explaining to me how I should do a task. Dude, I've already planned out how I'm going to handle the situation. If you really want to help, wait until I create my pull request, review it, and then make your suggestions there. Unless I ask for your advice on how to do something, I don't need you to tell me how you would do things, especially since i have, what, 5 years working in the framework when you have 2 months?
fellow ranters, i need your advice!
i'm searching for an ultra portable laptop:
- 11" screen
- full HD resolution
it will run Linux (Kali or other debian based distro) and i need that just to do some work while i'm on the go. I don't need huge performance, so the budget is quite limited (~300 EUR / 350 USD).
is the Thinkpad x220/x230 still the best choice (even if the screen resolution is not full HD)? any other suggestion?
So, I've just received two almost identical offers from two companies. One is a profitable large firm, and the other is a start up that's just been acquired and is yet to become profitable. Both firms or similar tech stacks and will train me on my missing skills.
The differences are that the smaller form has "promised" me a lead position in a few months. I know from experience that future promises like this don't anyways pan out.
At the end of the day, I need the skills and I want to make sure it keeps my CV interesting for the future.
I have to decide in a couple of hours. I need advice.4
Hi, im sandy.
i was a young junior web developer 1 year ago until 8th August 2016. I have a background in programming but at the same time i have a dreams become professional music producer in the future.
Right now, its finally my first year i entered college that late about 1 year waiting since the time i graduated from vocational high school. The major that i choose at the college weren't the same background as i chose at vocational high school which is SE (Software Engineering) but instead i choose Japanese Literature as a major (due hobby) which is out of beyond my tracks.
Sometimes i feeling bad because i was choosing the wrong major subject and get depressed about it and then thinking that i want to drop the college after 2 semester and get back to work as a developer in some IT office again. Or even following my dream to become music producer instead.
and now the question. Should i follow that egoistic mind of me? or should i keep on tracks and finish my study?..
if you will, please guys share some of your story so i can make it as a motivation someday.8
I need some advice guys. I want to start investing in crypto currency. My question is where can I buy/sell, and which is the best website to keep an eye on prices? Do you use any kind of app for it?1
Alright so I'm in need of a little advice.
So I recently decided to go back and practice basic problem solving and from what I can tell now it's just me not used to JS like I am with python but I want to move on to bigger projects and other basic concepts (like manipulation of the DOM) and move away from basic problems.
But my concern is that I'll look at that list and only pick the ones that I feel I understand I can solve instead of the ones I cant. And theres a large list of them and I see that people are doing a lot of them while I'm just doing a few per page. And I'm afraid I'm just not good enough or stupid if I just ignore the basics and move on because the basics are there for you to figure out the easy stuff.
But I really just want to move on and I dont know when I need to. And last time I asked for advice I mentioned I have been programming for a few years, left out the normal accomplishments I've posted on here but I was just told since it's taking me this long I should just quit I tried to rebuttle but they kept telling me no that literally broke me and my confidence so now I'm sensitive to asking questions also fuck whoever that was.4
I really don't balance social and dev life. I know I need some time to socialize but I just can't. It's like my life right now is in front of a computer and lines of code... Not that I don't like it, but I know I need to do other stuff besides coding, but I really don't know what to do and how to manage time. If anyone can give some advice, it would be great.2
TLDR: need advice about CS degree, worth it or not?
Already for some time I have been thinking about getting back to studying and finally for once get that fucking bachelor degree.
I have tried to study already 2 times. Both had quit not even after single year of studies.
First time was CS in my origin country, quality was really bad, so I quit during first semester.
Second time I moved to the Netherlands to study AI. Liked it a lot, but it was quite too much for me, I wasn’t ready for commitment to learn all parts of brains, all neurological diseases and stuff like that. Quit during 2nd semester.
Also, I have been in industry for 4 years now, working as php web developer. I am 22. Have a well paid job.
I want to study CS again, with specialization of cyber security, but in NL (same uni I studied AI, so I expect good quality). Also, as I already know programming, and a lot of other cs stuff, I expect I will need invest less time, and so I can also work in some company part time or even full time.
So in my consideration following are pros and cons of my this decision:
- I will be forced to learn basic cs stuff like memory management, how processes work in low level... And so I will be able to write better quality software.
- I will satisfy my parents wishes and also will be only one in my family with bachelor degree and I want my parents to be proud of me.
- I will meet like minded people, new friends, connections and will have higher probability to find a girlfriend.
- After getting degree, I will have possibility to work for government institutions, but I think this one should be in cons.
- No serving in military during study period (mandatory in my country for 9 months if you were called. till age 26 only)
- minus 9k euros
- minus 3 years of my free, undisciplined life
- a lot of sleepless nights
- possibility of getting depressed and questioning the meaning of life (but working in industry has the same effect)
Well, can’t actually think of something else.
I would like to hear your opinions on this, especially of people who had positive study experience. Thanks.6
Hello fellow devs, hope you rocking! I need your advice as junior dev here. How do you handle big projects ? I mean, without getting lost when coding and having a clear understanding of code's flow.4
I need advice fellow developers, am I stubborn?
So I lost an argument in my team regarding constant vs variable directly in a method for stored procedure names.
I separated names of procedures into their own StoredProcedureConstants file because it makes it very easy to see all procedures used in a project and refactor their names if necessary. Argument against was that you loose time creating a constant. Am I silly if I am alergic to seeing quotation marks stuff without its designated purpose throughout the code?
Their way is adding var procedureName = "cc.storeProcedureName" directly in a method. I just can't find my peace with it. To me this is a magic string.
Am I being unreasonable?3
I need advice!
I have a project idea that involves creating a cross platform gui but I cannot decide on a framework.
I have been toying with the idea of electron(ugh please no), c++ with either gtk+ or qt, Java with JavaFx.
I really want to be be able to create binaries for Mac windows and Linux while keeping bundlesize low and efficiency high. With this in mind I am leaning towards a c++ implementation but qt (which seems to be the best option for this route) has an insane learning curve. Is there something I am not thinking of that would satisfy these requirements?10
I could use some advice from some tenured developers... (or anyone with some thoughts)
Long story short, I went to school for business (Trust me... business people bug me too now), but in the last six months of college I didn’t like what I was doing (finance/marketing) so I dove into data analytics.
After graduating I was lucky enough to get a job at a great company doing a little data architecture work, writing lots of SQL stored procedures, managing client databases, cubes, etc... I really enjoy my work, but I recently discovered... Python...
After being introduced to Python from people at work as well as my Roomate, I’ve been trying to dig in as much as possible. I try to read/code at least an hour before work everyday and some when I get home. I love it.
So here’s where I need advice...
What do I need to do/learn to get a job writing Python all day? (Or a majority of my day)
What particular skills may I be missing that I should learn?
What do I need to do to make this happen?! (I love SQL, but damn python is amazing)3
Need some advice:
I got a job offer which I would love to start ASAP. However.. I have a 2 hospital dates one, 4th April and the other 13th May.
I am not sure what to tell the company. Should I be honest and say I got these 2 dates that I need to day off..or tell them about my first appointment and then later on in April tell them my appointment for May?
(This is my first job offer after graduation and I do not want the offer to then go away because if this..)5
I kinda want to expand my repertoire with some web development skills. I already know some front end .net. What do you suggest I start with? I heard someone say react+PHP is a good combo3
!rant but I need some advice, I've got to interview a new front end dev but have never interviewed anyone in my life, does anyone have any good front end questions I could ask?7
Guys I need an advice. I have a very good idea for a mobile app, but at the moment I know only C++. What would you recommend me to learn for building a mobile cross platform app, and, of course, what tools should I use? I'm completely lost, but I really want to develop this.4
Windows should ask you how computer literate you are upon its installation. That way, advanced users wouldn't need to see beginner level advice and would get easier access to 'complicated' stuff, without needing to go through countless permissions. Inspired by @coder67's post.2
So...I kinda started a huge project and it requires a pattern recognition for the users' schedules as the cherry on top.
I have no idea from where could I start learning this. I tried lots of stuff, I have basic knowledge of ai, but I need to get to the next level.
I need some friendly advice.
I am very interested in programming and being a great developer. It's the only thing that gives my life meaning. I want to learn all the technologies but everytime I start learning something, I see some other cool tech and I just keep hopping around, or sometimes I get intimidated by the complexity. I am pretty sure you guys must have gone through or are going through this phase. I want to learn many development related stuff but I don't want to keep juggling.
I graduated from college an year ago.
Can you please suggest some ideas which will make me pursue one tech/language for a long enough time so that I can learn it properly and then move on to a new tech?13
Need advice. I run all my development on a desktop that I have been happy with for years. Now it keep crashing (probably due to forti client which I need for a contract).
I am frozen in looking for a replacement. Will a laptop give me the freedom I want but not enough power and USB options? Will I be wasting 1000k buying one?
I do all sorts of dev: visual studio, eclipse, PHP, c#, Apache, IIS, SQL server, MySQL.
I pretty much have to be prepared for anything.
But I keep thinking a laptop will give me this mobility that I may never use.
I probably should stick with a desktop.3
Need advice guys :)
just bought myself a nice domainname, and now I'm looking for a good email provider I can use for my domain.
Any of you can point me in the right direction? It can come at a price, as long as it is not too much, but I'm well aware quality service does not come free...6
I always see job posts for:
• PHP & mySQL
Would you consider applying for these when you don't like these technologies? Why? I need your advice & wisdom guys. Thank you so much!3
Hi, I need some advice about android app development. I am a front end web developer and I want to get into android development. I have created a simple restaurant app using phonegap and knockoutjs but I didn't like the performance. Can you recommend how should I get into android development? Nativescript and ionic also lack performance as far as I have researched. Any help is appreciated.11
I need some advice.
Previously I have done Android development course on Udemy and now I took Android Nanodegree program from Udacity. I was wondering if Android development is a good career option, or should I learn something additional to it? If so, what?
I'm a B.E under graduate from India.4
Going from web dev on Mac to web dev on Windows. Any advice?
What is you favourite JS IDE on Windows? Any software that will make my life easier? Any other things I need to know?
All and any advice is welcomed.11
Freelancers, how many hours would you charge your client per small projects?
Situation is that I am leaving country but will still work as a freelancer android dev in my company at hourly rate 27EUR/hour.
Now from experience I already feel that most specifications of tasks/ux-ui sketches will be not clear/vague. Also there is a question of overall app architecture, prevention from crashes, memory leaks and etc.
Basically they will give me some spec and I will have to evaluate how long it will take to do it. I never worked as a freelancer so I need some advice on how to deal with problems like this. If I guess that something might take 5 working days to be done (40h) should I charge for 60h and etc.?6
So. Wow I have a question. Ok for real... I am in need of advice. I have a concept for a platform based on a specific interest which almost all of us have, based on a peer-to-peer principle with multiple services and user types/needs/agendas/reasons. The platform is intellectually straight forward and users will all participate on the platform as they see fit which will benefit other users as well as motivate more to join. The platform will serve it's own purpose and meet the users needs in a way that you may have seen before but the intellectual property and how the platform is used, is so unique that I can't risk too much information.
The question is. How do I protect my idea / intellectual property so I can recruit help and market without someone coming along and stealing it out from underneath me?
This isn't uncle Vinnys Cologne idea...
Everyone thinks they have the million dollar winner. I'm not sure if this puts gold toilet paper in my bathroom just yet but... I have something that an existing platform with money will absolutely steal and try to push as their own idea... They will probably succeed too.
So how do I protect this from happening so only I get to fail or ruin this good idea?2
Heyyy DevRant Fam! :D, hope everyone is doing very well today! i would love to get some input/advice from my fellow developer friends here today... so Milo has gotten himself into a sticky situation... So recently i had a little opportunity to get some mentor-ship or internship through a family friend, and im sooo excited but nervous at the same time.. i sometimes think to myself am i really 'good enough for such a position'?? but however since I've never really experienced this sort of work, whats their to lose? or is this a bad way too think about it? :D
so ladies and gents, I'm really interested in the stock market and that sort of finance, and i think id be a good fit to build tools for traders, if i cannot get into that sort of position, why not work back office and have more of a support role? I'm always very happy to work my way up as I'm highly motivated!, however in the case that i manage to get into such a position, I'd love to know, what sort of things do i need know to be able to land such a position? if you can give me any tips or advice id be extremely grateful! :D
If you have managed to get this far into my post, I'd love to say thank you so much! and i really apologize for rambling on... i generally always do that.... and also i want to say thank you so much for taking the time to read my question <3 really means a lot to me!
just quick note letting everyone know as a hobby project I'm building a little list app where i can save my favorite stock tickers/symbols into a list and see the price changes over time (through alphavantage's API) :D
Milo <3 :-)
I'm in need of advice. I reckon this is no stack overflow but that's probably for the best as I wouldn't feel as comfortable posting there as I am doing it here. So, back to the question: I'm currently working with legacy code, written in .NET 2.0. This code is responsible for calling upon PEC services in order to finally create personal smart cards. I was tasked with the job of creating a repository system that would allow the program to call on the old legacy services or the new ones without any distinction. We are talking about SOAP services in both cases. The issues is: the new service definition is comprised of soap policies. This wouldn't be a problem per se, with more modern version of the framework, but with .NET 2.0? Yes, it is. It doesn't support policies and signing the body with a certificate right out of the box. How can I manage this? I feel like the only way would be letting the proxy class do its thing up until the very last moment: intercept the SOAP request before its sent and modify it according to the specifications. But I reckon this is very bad practice. Is there any other way out of this?
Thanks for anyone that would like to help. 🙂6
TLDR, need suggestions for a small team, ALM, or at least Requirements, Issue and test case tracking.
Okay my team needs some advice.
Soo the powers at be a year ago or so decided to move our requirement tracking process, test case and issue tracking from word, excel and Visio. To an ALM.. they choice Siemens Polarion for whatever reason assuming because of team center some divisions use it..
Ohhh and by the way we’ve been all engineering shit perfectly fine with the process we had with word, excel and Visio.. it wasn’t any extra work, because we needed to make those documents regardless, and it’s far easier to write the shit in the raw format than fuck around with the Mouse and all the config fields on some web app.
ANYWAY before anyone asks or suggests a process to match the tool, here’s some back ground info. We are a team of about 10-15. Split between mech, elec, and software with more on mech or elec side.
But regardless, for each project there is only 1 engineer of each concentration working on the project. So one mech, one elec and one software per project/product. Which doesn’t seem like a lot but it works out perfectly actually. (Although that might be a surprise for the most of you)..
ANYWAY... it’s kinda self managed, we have a manger that that directs the project and what features when, during development and pre release.
The issue is we hired a guy for requirements/ Polarion secretary (DevOps) claims to be the expert.. Polarion is taking too long too slow and too much config....
We want to switch, but don’t know what to. We don’t wanna create more work for us. We do peer reviews across the entire team. I think we are Sudo agile /scrum but not structured.
I like jira but it’s not great for true requirements... we get PDFs from oems and converting to word for any ALM sucks.. we use helix QAC for Misra compliance so part of me wants to use helix ALM... Polarion does not support us unless we pay thousands for “support package” I just don’t see the value added. Especially when our “DevOps” secretary is sub par.. plus I don’t believe in DevOps.. no value added for someone who can’t engineer only sudo direct. Hell we almost wanna use our interns for requirements tracking/ record keeping. We as the engineers know what todo and have been doing shit the old way for decades without issues...
Need suggestions for small team per project.. 1softwar 1elec 1mech... but large team over all across many projects.
Sorry for the long rant.. at the bar .. kinda drunk ranting tbh but do need opinions...
I need some help with advice regarding getting new headphones, as my current ones are quite literally about to fall off my head. Thing is that I have a hard time finding what I want, and even then be able to determine stuff based on reviews.
My current ones are a pair of Turtle Beach Ear Force Z60, which is my first headset to have surround sound. They also sit very comfortably on my head without really pressing on my ears at all, and the audio when playing games is nice and clear. Unfortunately that has now set the bar pretty high when trying to find a new pair.
I tried out a pair of HyperX Cloud II, but I can't configure the settings and the surround sound doesn't seem to work at all (there seems to be a "gap" between one o'clock and three o'clock, so to speak, as well as between nine o'clock and eleven o'clock). I tried listening to a 7.1 audio clip, but the only ones in the right positions were center front and left and right fronts. The left and right sides, and left and right rears were all at the center point. And besides that the audio is unbalanced and just... not quite muffled, but not clear as with the old ones.
Thing is also that I don't know crap about audio stuff, like if it's got to do with me doing something wrong in terms of drivers or hardware or something, or if it's actually got to do with the headphones themselves. I've tried to find info but there's just none to be found, it seems, at least nothing that works. :(
Currently I'm considering trying out another pair from Turtle Beach, but it's so hard to trust the reviews. I mean, like the Z60 has pretty halfassed ratings, but I personally like them a lot. :/
Does anyone have any advice at all? Whether it's recommendations of headphones, or ideas on things I could try on my end to make things work.
AND, side note; I don't care for any comments along the line of "surround sound is bullshit, just stick with stereo, it's better", because 1) I don't agree nor do I care, and 2) it's unconstructive as shit.
I'm thankful for any ideas or advice you guys may have. :/11
Spent like all week working on a feature set in a web app, finally got to a point where i thought it was functioning well, ran tests, tests passed.
I was exhausted but happy. All along i have been pushing to my GitLab server. I save my commits and even though exhausted, i am happy as i go to bed.
I wake up, run some errands and my business partner says, eh! Can i come see that new feature set you built, sure, i will be home soon.
I was at the barbershop, trying to look like a human being again. I get home boot my computer and i scream.....
I check GitLab, i check my Git Log and i start to sweat, i was in the air conditioner but it felt like someone turned the heat up.
Git log shows my last commit was 2 days ago, my app is at the state it was 2 days ago and i can't frigging find all i have built.
I need to show this to the client, have no idea what to do now, so stressful. My partner say, you know what, just watch a movie. You built it before, you will do it again.
This happened to him a while ago and i gave him similar advice, it felt wicked hearing it now.
Anyways, i have to build that ish all over again, i do know i wasn't dreaming about having built it. I asked my wife and she said, i did, i was always working. So confusing.
Anyone experienced this before, i have no idea how to find my code.
I need advice.
I'm going to apply for PhD this year, but here's the thing, I don't have a specific interest in anything.
This sounds weird but I only want to do thinking. Like solving problems.
I would have a paper coming out this month as first author, but we discovered some weekends of our algorithm recently and decided to postponed the paper (there are 4 professors on the project and one researcher), so I guess this will definitely affect my application.
Like, what shall I say even on the personal statement? That I have one active mind that just won't stop thinking? The very fact that everything is interesting to me made me not interested to anything.3
Need an advice from you guys.
It's related to career.
( Details in comments inside; If you are interested)3
Hey guys. I need your advice about writing a documentation. I want to make a flowchart with all processes of this client’s mobile app so I could see the UX logic and also all UI screens in the app. I also want to somehow add backend info in order to see which endpoints are being called in these screens and what type of responses are we parsing there.
Currently flowchart is done in draw.io, some of sketches are in zeplin, and there is 0 backend documentation just some implementation in our mobile app.
I would like to combine all of this into some useful document/overview so I could pass this doc to a junior dev and he could jump working into project without a problem.
Do you know any tools to do this?1
I would ask this on Sololearn but 90% of people on there are morons who struggle to even use the app let alone read. A page can give you the answer to a question that follows and you got people saying that they need help with the answer. I mean how dumb can you be?
I'm not looking for an easy ride but I do feel I lack direction and with so many resources out there I'm a bit lost as to what experienced devs think are good.
I'm pretty consistent on at least on hour a day, 7 days a week. Though I only have about 2 months of experience which isn't crap in regards to the bigger picture. So I'm still extremely green but also very dedicated and want to learn so I can change careers.
Anyways opinions and or criticisms are welcome.Cheers.18
This is not a rant. Rather just a question or an ask for advice, as I have seen a lot of people talk about web development around here. I am planning to create a website for my search engine. I created a Rest API for my VPS so I can do http requests and retrieve some links for certain key words. But I need some good ideas to do this from a website. As I am not sure what would be the best way to do http requests. As far as I know it's possible with Js and PHP, but I am not sure what's better, more secure or convenient? So here I am to ask you guys, especially those who have experience with this, what I should consider to do.
Oh and please forgive me my limited knowledge about Js and PHP 😅😊3
DEVIANTS!! NEED ADVICE...
I have been focusing on learning and implementing data structures and algorithms through participating in competitive programming sites...
Whenever I face an issue and struggle to find an answer (which is more often than not), I ask the forum about the fundamental principles involved in the question...
I avoid looking at the solution, as much as possible.. And, when I do look at them, I still question the author of the code about the reasoning behind a particular section of code which I don't understand...
I don't wish to copy and paste code, but sometimes, I wait for days on end, but I don't use the code until I receive an answer...
Is this the right way or are there any other way which I could implement to strengthen my algorithmic thinking??10
Starting my first dev job next week (except for freelance work) and I'm crazy nervous that I'm going to make some huge mistake and look really stupid. Did anyone else have these fears before their first dev job and, if so, how'd you stay at least a little confident?4
!rant advice needed
I have an interview at a company this week who work in PHP, magento, angular js, swift and sometimes c#. Sounds quite good for a new grad with one year of experience in PHP and front end.
The problem is the salary is 20-22k. My friends are looking in London and the ones who ha e secured roles are 36k and 40k. They are roughly the same level of developers as me.
So what to do? Probably turn it down? I don't know what o should expect but I was hoping for around 30k. I need the money for personal reasons and 22k doesn't seem like a lot for a first class computer science graduate with a year and a half industry experience. I could be wrong?8
Since I have learned Java I was taught that Java only passes by value. But my Uni Professor discusses that Java is passed by reference for object and string. I am really confused right now and need some advice.15
Guys, I need some advice. I finally got a customer, and I'm trying to convince them to let me add SSL encryption, but they don't want the extra costs involved, that hosting providers tend to charge.
I don't really know of many hosting providers, as I run my own server, so I was wondering if people could recommend anyone that can let me run a nodejs backend, using mongodb?8
Hi! I am 25 today, stopped programming 3 years ago and only do gaming things for the past 3 years and now I want to start to program again but i think that I am in a rut don't know where to start. Sorry just want to take it out of my chest I feel kinda useless right now need some motivation. Please i need some advice.6
Need some advice on RAM,
So I’ve a laptop with 8GB ram and I am planning on a upgrade, now if I remember correctly I CAN add a 16Gig stick and it’ll be 24gig, but is it a good call to have different sized ram.
PS. Suggest a ram
Current RAM : HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH
P.P.S - I’ll obviously add RAM of the same frequency11
hey guys I am here for some advice so I am passed out 2 months ago from my university and I haven't found any job yet. I have hands-on experience with many technology but most of the job requirements need 2-3 years of experience so how can I find a good job or should I apply at such company even though I don't have any experience actually I have 6 month internship. or should I apply only to those company that need 0 years experience developer4
Any Dutch company owners here that have an IBC set up? Or any Italian company owners here? I need some help and advice in setting up a company structure. Although not strictly dev-related I'll of course develop some software for that new company :)
Okay guys, after sleeping it over I decided that I didn't need to dump my entire stack of Java/mySQL and instead just slow the hell down on my development time. I'm going from Udemy to a book to help me be a better dev and this is a night and day difference as my book breaks every bit apart and explains it in a lot more depth than having a video walk me through it. What I wouldn't do without Amazon's Kindle service I tell ya...:)
Today I'm starting the project over, but this time breaking it down and going at better pace. Thanks for all the advice guys. :)
...I'm going to need a lot of Jack Daniels for this project aren't I?5
Trying to compare two files line by line to see if a signal has increased by 5 dbm or more in bash is hurting my brain. I probably need to switch from bash for it but so much of the other jobs this script does is fully functional in bash I'd hate to switch now. Any advice please help.4
Fellow Python devs! I need some advice.
It's mostly about interviewing. If you were interviewing someone for a junior Python position what would you like them to know/be able to do?
Just trying to assess my level and what I'd like to be at and such.
Thanks. Love you all!4
!rant more advice needed for weather API
I am making a spur of the moment travel app built around a weather API. The problem is I need to feed in temperature and humidity for a date and get a list of countries and all the APIs I'm looking at work on location requests.
Would it be better to use a script external to my API or keep the business logic internal?
Best answer receives my warm thanks.
P.S. @dfox there should be a non rant section?6
Need some advice
Hey everyone! I'm just starting out in web design as a freelancer. What according to you is a good starting price I should charge a client?
I've got a client asking for prices and I'm not sure what to charge.
Any other tips would be appreciated :)3
Fellow ranters, I need advice !
Discord / Gitter
Gitter has an IRC gateway. While that's cool, for some reason both Vue JS and React are on Discord.
Hi Ranters, I need some advice.
Two days ago I got an email from my college that I've been shortlisted for an academic scholarship and my interview is scheduled for Wednesday the 11th of September. I would appreciate some guidance on how to prepare for this interview as this will be my first ever interview within the computer science field. Wish me luck guys!

When you are stuck in a job you don't particularly enjoy due to outdated technologies and among other reasons but still need to get the work done, how do you come home and do more coding? I am personally so drained that I cannot even look at a computer anymore, maybe someone can chime in and give me advice as to how to break out and not be stuck in the same place for the next 10 years?3
Hello, i am new here and I saw a lot of great people with good advices, so here I am. I am new in sysadmin field and i need some advice from you. Now I watch CCNA videos and practice in packet tracer. What do you recomand? Videos/ programs/ OS . ( i am a computer science student).4
I need advice. I'm to create a web application with an interactive map (lots of polygons to put on it, with markers and other map things) with a large amount of data and it is expected to have frequent changes to the said data. I have no idea of the tech stack to be used and the performance of the app is the biggest concern. (I'm thinking maybe to create an API, use MongoDB, then create a web client for it but I'm not that sure). Please give me your insights.7
I need your advice. I'm a junior developer and I overslept and missed not only a stand up meeting but a review as well and I feel like shit. This is my first time missing a meeting, though I feel like I've dirtied my name a bit. Am I holding myself to too high of a standard or am I rightfully upset with myself, and how do I make it right? Should I be concerned about losing my job?16
What is the best/ cheap hosting for portfolio and multiple projects under one hosting? I need advice . I was thinking about using namecheap.com for the domain but what would you recommend for hosting?5
I'm wondering if anyone worked in Microsoft as Data Labeler?
I'm supposed to have an interview in about a month, but since I stated that I know at least basics of C#, Java, and Python, they said I'd have different kind of interview.
I would appreciate any kind of advice, since I'm getting anxious cause I don't know what will be expected from me now cause u usually don't need any coding skills for that job
Edit: the new position is somewhat of an alpha tester I think5
Hey I need some advice
if i'm planning on going into IT Security with like ethical hacking and stuff like that and I already am learning Python + have a decent knowledge of CSS & HTML what should I start learning next while I'm bored at internship
(just incase it matter i'm using my school laptop, not the best but hasn't let me down so far and I have the basic admin rights since i'm on my high school's tech team)6
Any advice for a Bachelor's in Computer Science ? I often find myself lost in between all these career options and subjects and degrees.
I just need a little guidance 'cause I got no one to talk to about this...10
I got hired today. The company uses .Net in those stack and SQL. Which I need to learn a little bit within a week any advice for a junior developer?10
please i need your advice :)
I need to reform a service that offers legal advice and thus serves around 5000 Microsoft Word legal advice documents for the end user and every year there are 200 more documents created and published and changed manually.
So i had this idea to use a CMS, Git and continuous integration for
- automatic spell checking
- automatic assigning the copy text to translation bureaus, and get translations back.
- version control the texts and translations.
- document generation in multiple formats
- checking the text flow in the document (no overflown text)
- Checking for accessibility for the handy caped
- Deploying it on the Website
Do you think this is feasible? Can something that was made for code also be used to handle copy text documents? In my head this would save so much work but i'm no expert in CI/CD.
Thank you for your advice!8
I need advice:
I'm a developer, I have lots of experience with Java and Python (More on Java than Python). But I'm not a game-dev.
I've been thinking about dedicate serious time to develop a game, like a long term plan, using my free time.
Top down adventure / puzzle game; you know typical go here, get key there, put three gems here, unlock that and so on.
I have two options: Go with Java as I can move easily with it OR use an engine like Godot even though I've never used it before.
So game-devs, any advice on what should be the best approach here?8
Which skills and platform do I need to focus as a ASP.NET back end developer? The .NET development environment is so massive, I really don't know from where do I need to start. I do know basic C# syntax and was studying C# 7.0 in a Nutshell and stopped temporarily because it introduced too much concept that I don't need for now. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you!4
Any advice for finding a remote job? I don't *need* a new job, but I'd like one, and I'd like it to be remote because I live in the middle of nowhere and don't want to move.
I occasionally work from home, but the biggest problem I face is when asked, "have you ever worked remote before? working from home isn't the same..."3
I'm at a really confusing point of my life...
I'm a recent CS grad with a below average software engineering job.
Top and decent paying companies in my country need competitive programming skills which I'm not good at.
My friends and family suggest me to do MS from USA for a better career but I'm not sure.
Should I stay back in India and eventually work my way up to a higher pay or get a loan for my master's degree?
I know this question is too subjective, but what's your advice regarding this situation? Anybody with an MS or similar experience?3
Need some advice 🤔
This other dev company is unsecure and my client which is also there's should be secure
So Im getting them to secure it but what if they only do it for my client all their other clients are unsecure and they are teaching the young devs to do it unsecurely
Huge ethical issues here...
Hi!, Greetings fellow ranters,
I got into thinking this past few days. Because over the years, i really wanted to start my career as a freelance web/mobile developer, i'm not planning to quit my job(yet), but i want to slowly but surely build my freelance career. I just need some advice from you on how i should optimally or best approach this goal, and where/how should i find clients or what sites should i find clients, i know freelancer.com but I've heard other freelancers who had nightmares with it, upwork is also kind of overcrowded.14
I need professional advice. Or at least informed opinions.
I recently competed in a hackathon and won. My team wants to commercialize our idea. I'm worried that since we publicly displayed it, that the I.P. rights are a little "in the air". We NEVER verbally gave anyone the rights, and the rules of the hackathon don't even mention the words.
What would a legally savvy person do?3
I'm majoring in comp sci but I feel like I'm not learning what I need to be a good dev.
Anyone got any advice?6
Hey hackers, what's your best advice on getting through difficult classes?
I'm really struggling with final exams right now, especially calculus. Actually sitting down to study and put in the work is no problem, but I just can't seem to get any of the material or do any of the assignments by myself. Then I'll look up the solution, understand why these steps lead to the correct result, but have no idea how you'd even think of them when you don't already know the result you need to get to.
It's really frustrating and giving me massive anxiety because it just seems hopeless and I feel like I'm never going to understand any of it and be able to pass my exams. Any tips or advice?6
I need some advice on how to separate workstations. Currently I'm working with 6 projects at the moment and sometimes I use my PC, sometimes win laptop, sometimes macbook and it has become a mess.
Ideally I would like to have separate windows/mac instances where I could have project specific stuff installed. Having different windows accounts is not an option since I'm not sure if I will be able to multitask between projects effectively. Separate windows desktops also is not good enough for me. Buying multiple PC's as well. Maybe some cloud solution would be the way?
Can anyone advice on this?11
I’ve a raspberry pie 3B.
The pi boots up with the OS previously installed on it, theHDMI port works perfectly,
The problem is , I can’t get the USB ports to work, nor does the LAN port works. And the wifi also doesn’t connect automatically donno why , not sure if the wifi wasn’t setup or the chip is gone bad, just need to know what I can do with it4
I need an advice.
I just found an old pc, with a foxconn motherboard (http://foxconnchannel.com/ProductDe...) and an intel pentium (https://ark.intel.com/products/...-).
I need to buy a power supply, HDD (there were two with 300 GB in total) and new ram (there were 2GB of ram).
I think that the only thing I can reuse is the case (even though many screws are missing).
Taking into account that I am a student, so the financial resources are not a lot, do I just buy the missing pieces or throw away and change everything?
If I have to change everything, can you recommend an inexpensive setup?
P.S. I'm not a gamer, I'll use the PC just for school stuff (web development, java, virtual machines with VMWare).9
! rant && student
So, I'm currently looking for advices and this may be very long. It will be about web developpment, so that you know if it's worth your time or not !
I want to help my father build a website. The project will start little but can grow really big if everything goes as he planned (which will probably not happend but I'd like to share that experience with him anyway).
That means that we need it to be really flexible. As I have a little bit of experience with it, I was thinking to do it with node.js.
The thing is my father would like to be able to edit himself from time to time ; which means CMS, which I'm not really excited about. I told him so and he agreed on node.js if I don't find anything else that will be really good (he looked himself for CMS and wasn't really convinced anyway)
So I'm asking you, wonderful community, is there any suitable (and enjoyable) CMS that I could use ?
In any case, have you general advice for the newbie I am ?
Thanks in avance !2
Hey, just need a little advice regarding android kernels.
Does anyone know a simple way to download either pre-compiled or source code of stock kernels delivered with phones?
I flashed one, but have some System UI problems, so I want to go back to stock, but I can't find any download.
I'm running a Samsung Galaxy S6 (zerofltexx).6
Need some advise from all you clever devs out there.
When I finished uni I worked for a year at a good company but ultimately I was bored by the topic.
I got a new job at a place that was run by a Hitler wannabee that didn't want to do anything properly including writing tests and any time I improved an area or wrote a test would take me aside to have a go so I quit after 3 months.
Getti g a new job was not that hard but being at companies for short stints was a big issue.
My new job I've been here 3 months again but the code base is a shit hole, no standardisation, no one knows anything about industry standards, no tests again, pull requests that are in name only as clearly broken areas that you comment on get ignored so you might as well not bother, fake agile where all user stories are not user stories and we just lie every sprint about what we finished, no estimates and so forth, and a code base that is such a piece of shit that to add a new feature you have to hack every time. The project only started a few months back.
For instance we were implementing permissions and roles. My team lead does the table design. I spent 4 hours trying to convince him it was not fit for purpose and now we have spent a month on this area and we can't even enforce the permissions on the backend so basically they don't exist. This is the tip of the iceberg as this shit happens constantly and the worst thing is even though I say there is a problem we just ignore it so the app will always be insecure.
None of the team knows angular or wants to learn but all our apps use angular..
These are just examples, there is a lot more problems right from agile being run by people that don't understand agile to sending database entities instead of view models to client apps, but not all as some use view models so we just duplicate all the api controllers.
Our angular apps are a huge mess now because I have to keep hacking them since the backend is wrong.
We have a huge architectural problem that will set us back 1 month as we won't be able to actually access functionality and we need to release in 3 months, their solution even understanding my point fully is to ignore it. Legit.
The worst thing is that although my team is not dumb, if you try to explain this stuff to them they either just don't understand what you are saying or don't care.
With all that said I don't think they are even aware of these issues somehow so I dont think it's on purpose, and I do like the people and company, but I have reached the point that I don't give a shit anymore if something is wrong as its just so much easier to stay silent and makes no difference anyway.
I get paid very well, it's close to home and I actually learn a lot since their skill level is so low I have to pick up the slack and do all kinds of things I've never done much of like release management or database optimisation and I like that.
Would you leave and get a new job?2
Need an advice..We have to select a department elective this sem..What would you guys recommend...I am inclined towards Python and Linux internals but we have to choose only one. From the Department Elective 1.
I could also opt for something else other than these two.8
Hello guys, i need some advice:
Our school is having a "auto-management" (idk how to translate) period, it lasts 3 or 4 days just before christmas vacation, and in those days students get to organize courses about pretty much everything to teach stuff to other students (exept stuff like video games cuz the principal is closed-minded), some friends asked me to make a course about programming in c# because they are interested, i thought it was cool so i said OK.
Now i'm thinking how to structure it, it's going to be 2 "lessons" of 2 hours each, and it's open to everyone in the school.
I don't want to do a full blown course explaining everything, i just want to give them a kick start and point them to the right direction, I thought about explaining some "theory" in the first lesson, I'm assuming almost everyone that will come never did programming stuff, so i'm thinking of explaining stuff like how a computer works, why you need a compiler, etc.. maybe based on the introduction from learncpp.com without getting to much into the details and then explaining how c# works and its grammar.
Then in the second lesson i'll try to code togheter some stuff (We'll have just one pc attached to a projector).
So, how would you do this ? I mean i never tried explaining programming to someone else and i'm self-taught i looked at the guide on msdn but it starts directly by giving you an hello world, should i follow it ? I fear i'd get too thecnical and they wouldn't understand me, do you know some good guide i can use as a reference ?
ps: there's going to be max 30 people
Being asked for computer/device purchase advice! Just because I use a computer on a daily basis, doesn't mean I know what you need. Do your own research, like the rest of us, and learn something in the process! You've heard of the internet right!?
Supposed to write a really simple 2d game and an AI to accompany it, thinking about doing it in JS as it's for a University project... I need to finish it fast(don't really care about the quality hence JS) and have been looking on a game engine/framework called MelonJS anyone heard of or used it? Grateful for all advice u can give. The AI I think I've got covered, but also any advice is helpful...
I am a 3rd year undergraduate and we need to make a web based project. Problem is no one on our team has ever made anything web based or even a simple website before. We need to run some Java code in the backend apart from that we are free to do whatever we want. Any advice on what frameworks to use and what to avoid?
I literally have zero experience on this so any advice is appreciated!3
I can't help but stress out about finding work in development. I just want an internship / entry level summer position to put myself in a better position for post college and to explore and learn in new environments. But it seems like my best chance for scoring that internship is building a solid portfolio or experience, something that I haven't had time to do..
I wrote my first line of code (that wasn't HTML or CSS) when I got to college. Since then almost all my time has gone into my cs engineering curriculum and working a real shitty blue collar job during breaks (for 4 years now) because Im broke and got denied by the 20+ positions I applied for. I can't really do anything with the code I wrote for my schoolwork because I can get fucked if I post it anywhere or share it. I have loads of ideas, but am worried that they are too big to do while maintaining my GPA and scholarships. It sucks too because I am a quick learner, and would even venture to call myself good at what I do.
So since I have hardly been able to pursue any independent studies, I haven't been able to really explore the field, so I don't even know what to areas i need to focus on to make myself a better candidate. So basically I'm broke, don't have shit for pet projects, don't know what I want to do with my life, and can probably expect to work like a dog next summer too because I've heard most companies hire for the summer in the fall.
I don't write this because I feel bad for myself. I write this because it's likely that most people here have been in a similar situation. I also don't like to make excuses for myself like I have been doing. Any advice folks? What should I be doing differently?3
There needs to be a new (MOOC) class for people like me.
Hi, I'm William. I can't get my head around designing systems. I've read GoF and a few breakdowns of it as well. I find some patterns obvious for my field of interest (game dev, woot!) while I'm reading through the stuff, but have a pretty hard time retaining much of it. I'm aware of the danger of over using patterns, so I don't worry that much about it. I'll look something up when I'm sure I need it.
Still, I'm tired of the tutorial blues. I can watch a few different people write entire games, usually not in the language of choice, but that only helps me so much.
How do I fight scope creep? In the meantime, how can I make things extensible? Scope does need to creep some, after all.
People joke about starting with (visual) BASIC ruining you forever. I don't believe in that crap, but is this just denial? Am I too dumb for this? Not that I'd ever seriously blame a language for that.
I've been a hobbyist for well over 10 years, please don't make me count exactly how long I've been unsuccessful.
I'm baffled by Löve. I think it's the coolest shit I've seen, maybe ever (unless we're counting IPFS).
I think what really prompted this rant, apart from the obvious degradation of my mental health, was my search for an entity component system for Löve/Lua. Hold your replies. I know there's a few of them, and I'm positive that they're fantastic. I'd roll my own, but that requires actual Lua specific knowledge that I just haven't dug all that deep into yet. I can't wrap my head around the ones that exist, even though I can tell their complexity is next to none really.
I have severe tool anxiety, I'm shocked that I've stuck with ZeroBrane Studio as long as I have. It feels good though.
Sorry to use this as "Devs Anonymous", but I think that's how this community helps (me) best.
I feel like I should stop now and just say: Advice? before this gets much deeper/less readable.
Seems like working in a start up is more tougher than i thought it will be.
Damn it's is taking a lot to keep up now a days.
Need advice to balance out thing.
Before this startup thing I was a freelance developer.1
I'm about to set up a new pc (not for me, in our bureau, it'll do nothing special at all) elementary os or Ubuntu 17.10?
I'd do an update to Ubuntu 18.04 when its published, but I don't wanna use the "old" version with unity as of now...
Or elementary is because it's easy to use?
I'm currently working in a theater, so it should be usable for "non-techies".7
Need an advice for getting some freelance jobs on upwork (looks like the most promising). The thing is that I have revised my profile many times, I get jobs to reply to my invoice and discuss a bit and they seem satisfied but at the end they reject my invoice generally because of a lack of experience on upwork.. I mean it's a paradox God damnit! I have projects I want to offer a descent living for my lady and I with all my will I can't get more job..
Hey friends, I could need some advice from you.
I created an app, which is based on the (closed) API and database of another company (huge website).
The whole idea, design/brand and environment are worked out in detail by me and I would like to "sell" them the idea. Maybe in form of the Design/Brand, advisory or even being part in the final development.
I just don't know how which is the right way to communicate this to the mentioned company.
How would you do that?2
External Storage recommendation questions.
Im in need of some sort of external storage, either a harddrive or a NAS server, but idk what to get.
Price should be reasonable for the security and storage space it gives, so heres what i figured so far for pros and cons:
+ Bigger capacity
+ Raid option
+ Easily expandable
+ Always accessible via the network (local)
- Difficult to transport (not gonna do that, but still)
- Physically larger
- Consumes power 24/7 (i dont pay for power currently)
+ Easy to pack away and transport
- If drive fails, youre fucked
- If you want larger capacity, you end up with two external backups
What do you guys do? Im not sure what i should do :i
Any advice is appreciated.
It will be used for external backup, as mentioned. For my server and my own pc.12
I'm studying for an exam and it's two weeks that I don't touch a computer.
I need a newsletter to be always up to date with CS and programming languages. What do you advice?
So I need some advice... I've been applying for jobs as a web dev for a while now but not so much as a bite. I think a large part of this is a lack of formal education. Do you think it's worth attending a class just for the certificate? Maybe do a bootcamp? If you got hired while being self taught how did you do it?2
Sooooo, would need a little help here please.
Would like to switch from OpenSuse at home to some other Linux distro. (Side note: using OpenSuse at work and at home, would like to discover something new).
Already tried Ubuntu but really didn't like it. Arch Linux was okay though.
Saw some of your pictures of your nice customized desktops and would like to try something like this, but really don't know which distros can do this.
While searching a bit I found three which look/read quite interesting:
Devuan, Alpine Linux and Sabayon Linux.
What would be your thoughts on those, or which distros would you recommend?
Would be grateful for any advice. 😊4
How would I go about programming such device in terms of software and language? Would I use HTML and make a web interface? Need advice so I can get started on this idea that I have.3
Need some advice here.
I am into the third month at my new job in a new country. My new workplace and I are all basically Chinese (Ching chong ling long). Tentatively, we should have no problem getting along right?
Till now, I had not discovered a common topic that we can engage in. All conversation between me and them were short-lived. I go my way and as do they. However, I still like to have some decent conversation or human interaction. I felt socially dead and excluded. Seeing them having fun together and not being able to be included, felt...dread.
I had been feeling lonely in this new country for quite awhile. It makes me question why I came here in the first place and comtemplate about returning to where I came from.
If you had this kind of situation before or if this is you, what would you do?4
I am planning to get either a new graphic card first or new CPU, RAM and Mainboard.
I need advice on what hardware I should upgrade first in my old pc, as I am not sure whether my CPU would be a bottle neck to a new graphics card.
CPU: AMD FX 6200 (3,8GHz) 6 cores
RAM: 8Gb DDR3-Ram (1600MHz)
Graphics: Geforce 780 gtx
Mainboard: Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
RAM: 16GB DDR4 3200
Graphics: Asus rog strix rtx 2070 OC
Mainboard: Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming
I use my Desktop mainly for gaming and some programming in machine learning, but for the latter I can still use my Company notebook which has enough resources.
So I‘d like to hear some opions on what to upgrade first (graphic card or rest) of someone who is more knowledgable in terms of hardware than me :)1
I need some advice, you guys.
I'm weeks away from graduating from my code school and working on a capstone project with a group and there are several people who I'm having a hard time following their code.
No comments, no documentation, just "30 hour sessions" and opinionated, undocumented code that doesn't mesh with the project plan 100%. It works, it get's the job done, but it's over complicated, undocumented and hard to follow.
Starting to feel like the 3rd wheel in a 4 person group because I'm the only one that is having a problem and I'm not sure how to get them to document their code for me. They try to explain it and just end up literally reading their code, which doesn't really help.
I feel like I'm working in a group of individuals who don't really want to work together and I'm worried it's going to be a problem.1
I resigned in last month. I worked as PHP dev and mostly in Laravel. I have little bit experience in angularJs. I want spend some time to learn new language and tech before I join in other company.
I want learn Go, Ruby and Python. Not all at once. I will mess around Aruidino a little bit as hobby.
I need your advice. As a PHP dev, Which language is easy to pick up? I mean PHP to other language listed above. I am not asking which is better than other. And will it be relevant to learn grunt, bower, gulp techs for a backend developer? And any other things you might want to suggests? I am open to suggestion.
Thank you in advance.
PS: Sorry for bad my English.1
Haven't posted on devrant for quite a while but I need the community's input on a decision I have to make:
I recently graduated from college and I have two job offers: one as SDE 1 from Amazon and another from a small (less than 10 people) but quickly growing start-up. I looked at all the generic pros of cons of joining an established company vs a startup but I am still torn on the decision. Both the companies are offering similar pay, so money's out of the question now.
If anyone from the community has any advice from personal experience (or specific to Amazon), that'd help me a lot.
Have a good day, everyone!4
Desperately need advice from devs in India...
asking this here since really stressed about this and don't know who to ask to...
I am an engineering student from Bangalore, India from a basically no name college...
I have been coding for 2 years now, web stuff, primarily rails and js...
i have worked with handful of startups, done internships, and am working on my own projects which i will launch soon...
Lately my college has made it a mission to make my life hell even though i always perform well academically...it has gotten to a point where I am not able to work or learn anymore...
I wanted to ask what consequence my career will face if I drop out ?
I believe lack of a graduation degree will make me not eligible for many jobs...please suggest what I should do...6
Hey All, hope everyone is doing absolutely well, need some advice/help i'm kind of stuck and overwhelmed at the moment :"D. I Really would like to get back into c++, i have not done much programming for quite a good few months on this particular programming language, i love to learn by doing and following examples, if someone could recommend me some good books or other resources i'd be very grateful :=), or some good tips onto getting back into this language :-).
Thank you once again for taking the time to read through my question :D.
Milo <3 :D7
Just started on an IT company as my first job and I trully like it, But I believe that this is not what I am looking for in my career. The company is too big and I have the feeilng that growing is going to be hard in here.
I am thinking about applying for a systems and software engineering company, I know it won't be easy to get hired but I need to try.
Any advice on it?1
Need Advice on learning programming
How do I know when I'm learning too much too soon.
My brain is killing me. Been reading and practicing since 7 am. :(7
!rant: Need a little advice here. What are fundamental things to learn when moving from development to management? I have a course in project management from university, and one in personnel management, but what about the financial part? Where can I learn this?
I need to program a kiosk , would Java be a good option (as I'm familiar with it) for the GUI of it? What is the best approach to making a kiosk with a nice graphical interface? You know, like those ones used to order food? Need advice.1
OK Guys I need your advice. I got an (I think it's about 8 years old) Aspire from Acer. Windows 10 is installed after upgrading from Windows 7, which was the worst decision because now it runs at speeds below good. I want to clean install a new OS. But which route to take?
Windows or Linux?
What distribution? I have my knowledge in Debian. Or could I go with RemixOS because it's most user-friendly and best for work abroad? But is there an IDE for Android based distributions?
You see what my dilemma is don't you? ^^
May some of you could help me
Specs: 4GB of DDR3, 500GB HDD, a shitty battery and an AMD Dual core with something about 2.5GHz11
Need some job search advice here please!
A startup is has offered me a job, but is going to be paying me half salary for 3 months, and then they're sure to get funding, so will be paying the difference amount after 3 months. But, it all hangs on this supposed funding that will happen in 3 months. The "CEO" is actually working for another company currently. And his rationale for half salary was, we all need to take risks with startups. Is this worth taking up? The alternative is me continuing job search for a more stable job (where I can stay for few years) and a full salary with benefits and all. I'd tried starting up on my own earlier, and now I'm looking for opportunities fulltime (in other words unemployed).8
Month into a project and I can’t decide between mongo and MySQL. I’m using an ORM so I can still have this debate but deeper in I’m going to need some Manuel queries and I really need whatever reads the fastest. I was told mongos selects are much quicker but an article I read this morning said differ.
Hey friends, I need some kind of advice from you.
I'm in terrible search of a side project, an opportunity, something to kill my time with, while still achieving something.
Little bit of background: small design exp., more frontend dev, including React/Redux, GravCMS, WordPress, and some other small things.
Can you help a quite bored dev colleague?1
Hello folks, have a question, I can't decide if I should install windows 7 (super stable Windows btw) or a Linux distribution (debian or Ubuntu 14), I've always been a Windows guy and was thinking of switching to Linux on my new free dos laptop and wanted to have a hand on Linux, but please I don't want that Windows/Linux fight I just need real advice. Some friends told me to get Windows 7 and a VM Linux just for practice, I also thought about having a dual boot Windows Linux server , I think it would be the best config for me.. so..?3
It feels like getting an internship can be a catch 22, you need experience to get experience. What advice would you give to someone looking for an internship?2
I have an idea I need to get out of my head but am not sure where to start. I want to figure out a good way to learn about real-time water simulation. I’m looking at either OpenGL, or Openframeworks, or Cinder. I have basic experience with c++ and a bit less with OpenGL but am not worried about learning. Could someone point me in the right direction? Andy good resources to learn or just general advice would be greatly appreciated.4
Greets. I need advice. And before reading just skip me with classic things you can't - you shouldn't. As i am Windows user last 20 years, I never actually used any other os (running ubuntu on vm occasionally doesnt count). So for some period of time I'm thinking about throwing myself fully into some Linux distro but I can't choose which one. I was thinking between Fedora, Arch and Debian (i dont want Ubuntu), but also what it should be a main key of my decision is good documentation backed up distro. Thanks in advice if you are willing to help my decision2
Hey guys, need your advice please.
In september Last year I've started my apprenticeship. Before that I made a year internship and developed a Software for them.
After I've left the internship, my Old Boss (Boss from internship) asked me if I can support the Software a while. So, I set Up a git, made it available in github, but private (had to paid for it - from my own Money). After not hearing something from him - He didn't understood how He Can Log in Into GitHub -.- WTF ! I wrote him multiple instructions but it was useless.
Because I don't have the desire and patience anymore - and don't want to pay with my own Money to Make it available for them - pay for something they can't even Login because they are ... Yeah.. I've decided to cancel the membership in github some weeks ago.
Today my Old Boss contacted me via E-Mail, after not hearing something from him in months.
Now I don't know how to react - He wants that I Code for him, the Software again.
on the one Hand I don't want to "leave him alone" but on the other hand I don't want to Support this Shit anymore.
What should I do?
At least I want to get paid for my Work. But I don't know, if this is legal to earn Money next to your apprenticeship. My current Boss Said one time that this would be No Problem, but I'm not sure about it.
Would be glad about any help and advice from you.
hey guys i need your advice about backend integration for android. I have this junior and I want to teach him about integrating REST API and handling it with volley+caroutines or retrofit+rxjava. currently the junior is using firebase for authentication and firebase realtime db for all CRUD operations. problem is that by using firebase backend the junior won't learn networking/multithreading stuff. Is there a way to use firebase realtime database like a REST API?1
I'm just going to graduate, and I got a job as S/W engineer(trainee) in a small (500 odd employees) company, which uses salesforce, SAP and sharepoint technologies! They are most probably gonna put me in salesforce or SAP. Is it good enough for `me`(read my background), I'm kind of confused, should I go for higher studies?
very average student, but swift at learning technologies, never really got interested in competitive (otherwise I had a real good chance in top companies), I kind of have good IT skills - proficient in python and angularJS, but recently I have got into ML and done some projects!
Okay here's the part, I know it's important for a fresher to be good in data structures, I'm indeed good in parts which I have used! I haven't used AVL tree in any of my projects so I don't know, nor I have ever used bitwise ops!
I think I want to get into roots of ML (some people say I'm fickle but IDC), I think if I take the above job I may loose my interests or may not have time, Please advice.
(sorry for the tags but I need advice from people for all these fields)11
Hi fellow devRanters, I need some advice on how to detect web traffic coming from bad/malicious bots and block them.
I have ELK (Elastic) stack set up to capture the logs from the sites, I have already blocked the ones that are obviously bad (bad user-agent, IP addresses known for spamming etc). I know you can tell by looking at how fast/frequently they crawl the site but how would I know if I block the one that's causing the malicious and non-human traffic? I am not sure if I should block access from other countries because I think the bots are from local.
I am lost, I don't know what else I can do - I can't use rate limiting on the sites and I can't sign up for a paid service cause management wants everything with the price of peanuts.
Someone asked why I can't just read through the logs (from several mid-large scale websites) and pick out the baddies.
*facepalm* Here's the gigabytes log files.9
Guys, need your ideas/advice.
I myself am out of ideas here. The 'problem': I started learning React 5-6 weeks ago, made news app, weather app and... that's it. What else should be in every react dev portfolio? Todo app doesn't count. Too easy. ;)
Hello fellow developers,
I need a career advice from the DevRant community.
My question is:
Can I get a joining bonus from Capgemini if I'm joining within 15 days for the post of the associate consultant, because I've been told by HR that giving joining bonuses has stopped since January ’17?3
Need advice. I am totally lost in this data science course. Should I just cut my loses and abandon the class or continue to make a fool of myself. I feel totally lost and the rest of the class hates me4
I need a proper mousepad that is affordable, soft and possibly washable. I have been able to find a good one around my way. Any advice???2
Need an advice on syncing large amounts of small files. For starters I have 2 million of ~20-25kb sized files in dropbox. Syncing it with my local machine is a pain in the ass (API limits syncing to 4-5 files per second, so I will need at least 96 hours just to take out everything from dropbox).
Recently I started looking into self hosted cloud solutions. I fiddled around with nextcloud but it's client limits syncing to 5-6 files per second as well. Accessing nextcloud via webdav from a rclone client I was able to up the syncing speed to 15-25 files per second but that's all.
Any solutions where I should host 2mil of files and would be able to sync them fast to my own machine with some cloud client when I need it to?5
I need some advices on how to do a react multiple steps form. A form allows student to submit their previous study and exchange credit in my univwrwity. Username and password at start. Then text fields, date selection, drop list with lots of data from backend, upload files. Click next to next steps or previous steps. It seems complicated. Thinking to use react and redux. Any advice...
Hi guys i have been off for a while but in that process i realized am good with animation and design plus video editing... programming is a bit hectic am almost giving up but the problem is that i am on my last semester (computer science) and i have to come up with a project in order to graduate... I just need some advice1
Need advice about protecting ddos via iptables and whitelisting. Currently I launched my gameserver and am fighting against a massive attack of botnets. Problem was solved by closing all ports on my gameserver linux machine and shipping game.exe with injected c++ socket client. So basically only gamers who launch my game exe are being added to firewall iptables via the socket client that is provided in the game exe. If some ddosers still manage to get inside and ddos then my protection is good enough to handle attacks from whitelisted ips from inside. Now I have another problem. Lots of players have problems and for some reason shipped c++ client fails to connect to my socketserver. Currently my solution was to provide support in all contact channels (facebook, skype, email) and add those peoples ips to whitelist manually. My best solution would be to make a button in website which you can click and your ip is whitelisted auromatically. However if it will be so easy then botnets can whitelist themselves as well. Can you advice me how I could handle whitelisting my players through web or some other exe in a way that it cant be replicated by botnets?1
What languages and tools do I need to build an android app similar to devRant(same functionality)? Please help. Badly need advice for my next project.
I'm a pre-final year student, have recently bagged a summer internship in Microsoft (will begin after 10 months) , since I've got a lot of time in my hand I'm trying to explore the options I have ahead, it could be Enterprenuership, could be Machine Learning, could be open-source, could be research.
I would love to have some career advice, or just your thoughts on how you would choose if given a chance to be at my place, I know it's me who'll have to choose finally, but I'm seriously in need of some help.
I need advice: study 4th year (Bachelor's) or work?
Thought I saw a similar thread a while back but can't find it in search right now.
21 years old, end of this year I'll graduate with a diploma (3rd year). I have one option of university here because they're the only one that offer my course (IT instead of CompSci like the others). Their administration and general status is not stable (see my earlier rant or Google CPUT protests in the news). Couple this with a deep desire to move out (housemates and drama) and wanting to keep working instead of going back to study.
Thoughts? My current best bet I think is to hedge my bets and apply anyway, then if I don't want to study next year I won't. Still seeking opinions though. Local market (mostly recruiters) values qualification too much. Planning on moving away anyway but will need a job to hold me over until then.
