Me: 1 is something, 0 is nothing, NULL is the absence of things
JuniorDev: wut
Me: You've got pizza in a box, that's 1. If there's no pizza in the box, that's 0. If there's no pizza and no box, that's NULL.
JuniorDev: OOH so there's no object to reference if I ask for a slice!
Me: *small tear*
Always explain things in terms of pizza. Always.25 -
So I learned something today. Always disable guest sessions in your Linux machine in a work environment.
Walked away from my pc to talk to a fellow Linux engineer.
Came back to a screen with pornhub and porn playing.
"wait how the hell? I locked my pc...?!?"
"ever heard of guest sessions mate? 😆"
😓
*silently disables guest sessions*
Well okay learned that one the hard way 😅30 -
To be or not to be.
Whenever you are stuck with something in life, ask that question to yourself.
Because
2b || !2b
Is a Boolean expression which will always be true. So asking that question will lead you to true self.
Peace ☮️9 -
I've always find it weird when people said "You never know how much you love something until it gone"
Until i broke my keyboard's Left CTRL.11 -
I started studying computer science 3 years ago as a challenge for myself, try something new, do something I knew absoluty nothing about.
I was always the girl who didn't know as much as the rest. I took longer than everyone else, made worse solutions. I always felt like a burden.
Yet today, for the first time, I really felt like a real developer at my last week of my summer job. Explaining a five year older collegue (with a lot more (web)dev experience) about design patterns, git, c++, and helping him to understand and use it properly.
Apparently I was smiling like an idiot because he asked me if I was making fun of him, while deep inside I was just so happy to be helpful.. 😊18 -
DevRant has more reviews on Android compared to iOS.
Well, yeah... Java devs are always bitching about something 😉10 -
Last teacher rant from me and this one is about: my mentor.
Let's call him Bob.
He was a person who'd always be ready to help you out, did some lessons on bullying and the effects of it, stood by me many times when I'd have hard times with something I'd trouble and one of the most important things, he had a very good sense of humor!
Also, since I always wore a suit (still do), he introduced 'FaF' day, aka, Fancy as Fuck day. Every Wednesday the guys who wanted to would come in suits.
Yup, he got me through loads of stuff, miss that guy :)7 -
Just because Facebook/Google/Apple are doing something, it doesn't mean it's the future of technology.
No, we're not going to throw out large parts our perfectly good tech stack just because you liked their latest blog post.
If you wanted to always play "follow the shiny thing", you should have become a jeweller. Please learn what independent thought is and how to apply it, the results might surprise you!7 -
My company seems to never have the money to do something right but always have the money to do it twice.3

Yes I am a Linux user and yes I don't like windows and this is NOT a windows hate post but I've been a windows user intil the age of 15 and this is the one thing I still cannot wrap my head around. Fun fact is that I also talked about this with my examinator guy who is a 'hardcore' windows user and he fully agreed 😆
Whenever I was either at the start menu or within for example the downloads folder, when I'd put something in there or downloaded something and later on wanted to search for it through the start menu or the folder viewer itself, IT ALWAYS RETURNED AS 'NOT FOUND'.
Whenever I search for that fucking file, it always said that it couldn't find the damn fucking file.
AND THEN WHEN YOU SCROLL THROUGH THE FUCKING FOLDER IT IS RIGHT FUCKING THERE RIGHT IN FUCKING FRONT OF YOU.
I've used many linux distro's and even OSX for a very little and it always works perfectly on there but windows ALWAYS fucked this one up for me and appearantly (according to them though) I am not the only one who this doesn't work for!
I still find this one very weird.19 -
Today's my birthday!
YAAYYYYYY
ME: Presents?
Parents: You didn't requested one.
ME: But you always bought me SOMETHING.....
Parents: What do you want?
ME: Dunno.........

If I tell normal people I'm a computer programmer, I always get asked to fix something hardware related.
If I tell normal people I'm a software engineer, I get a "that's awesome" and don't get asked to fix anything. I'm sticking with this option.3 -
Being a developer is it still possible to be a gamer?
I feel like with all the new technologies coming in, I am always occupied with learning something and I don't get the time to game at all.
I am coming to a realisation that everything together is not possible anymore :(19 -
Me visiting home for easter:
Me: tries to find some good assets for adventurejam
Me: fixes a bug on the prodserver
Me: redesigns a gui of an app
Me: applies for a bunch of new jobs
Mom: "you are always computer-ing, do something productive"3 -
When im making the website with the client, they always start with: "Can we..." and than they say something like: "make the background color red?, or is it not possible?"
And I'm just:12 -
Antergos with KDE is so beautiful 😍😍
It is so customizable, something which I always missed in elementary.
More screenshots in comments19 -
There will always be that one person who ruins all the fun
PS: Speaking of JQuery, I really found it to be somewhat slow. Is it slow or am I doing something wrong?8 -
you always learn something new everyday.
Strike a male USB cable on the back of an iMac, and you get yourself an unexpected shutdown.
oh, and a few cool sparks as well.10 -
Me: Hans, Get ze Flammenwerfer!!!
Hans: Why?
Me: The fucker rejected my PR because "calling twice the same getter is a code duplication". I swear, he always tries to find something!3 -
Always make smaller commits! Easy to roll back, easy to cherry-pick, easy to debug when identifying when something went wrong.2
-
I was at the robotics group of our school when suddenly two other students (both 2 grades above me) started talking:
P1: I always forget the brackets when writing code
P2: I always forget the return statements
P3: yeah, always takes ages to find out why your code doesn't work
P4: haha, in the end it's just something missing that you didn't notice like a semicolon or a bracket
Me (thinking): do you use a fucking toaster to code? Even if you don't use an ide the compiler tells you what's wrong8 -
try {
…..
} catch {
// this would never happen
}
and then it happened
fucking always print something when you catch exceptions15 -
"You should always hardcode stuff, so that when the customer wants to change something, he'll pay us and we'll make it dynamic!"3
-
I realized some time ago that when people ask you to do something and it is too generic, if you keep pushing for an explanation they end up getting angry at you as if you are the stupid one.
So funny, I'm always doing it on meetings now and laughing inside :)2 -
My potato lagged with the temperature too high error message.
So I decided to operate on it. Last operation was about 40months ago or more.
Every time I opened and reassemble something, I always ended up with extra screws (check comments). Wish they were gold 🤔
And this is probably the last operation I could perform on it. I must save fast to buy a desktop 😥13 -
My favorite one was always from our tech lead when I was a junior,
"Huh, didn't know we could do that. Very cool."
It was real ego boost and something that really stayed with me.2 -
When I define a function which is supposed to return something (for example int), I always write 'return 0;' after I wrote the signature of it to avoid the red error-marker. It drives me crazy... After I finished coding I replace the 'return 0;' with what I actually wanted to return.5

Everytime 🙄
Client: it's not working.
Me: what isn't
Client: the app video and link thing locator
Me: device and spec ? Like I always need
Client:iPhone
Me: yes. What one and what version of iOS
Client: urm 6s iOS 10 something
Me: great 😏 not broken for me
Client: well everyone is complaining so we need it fixed.
What can i even do now 😐7 -
Why do people always think the following:
When something goes wrong on windows its the fault of windows.
When something goes wrong on linux its probably a misconfiguration.
Most of the time things that go wrong on windows are misconfigurations or faulty software.10 -
It must be exhausting for people in 2018 to always be on the hunt for something to be outraged or offended about.9
-
Has anyone noticed how much waffle there is in online content. You watch a 8 minute video to find out a something that could have been explained in 30 seconds.
When I was at uni one of my lecturers had a great motto. Always keep your signal to noise ratio high3 -
I always end up being too busy working on a new features that I forget git commiting every feature so I always end up comitting something like "lots of new stuff idk lol"7
-
Do coding outside of work. I got into the industry because I enjoy writing code, but your job won't always be fun. That's why they give you money. Make sure that spark of joy doesn't die.
Or, when it does die, at least you'll have something to rant about.3 -
This is one from i was an intern
Me: writes some logic, using
for(String s : something)
Senior: holds a 30 minute talk on why short loops are bad and we should always use the traditional one
Me: ok retard
Me: havent used traditional loops ever since then8 -
Never before I have shared my feelings with all great, kind developers. I always wanted to be the healthy, active & passionate member of this family...but never know what to say!!
Made an account earlier as well .. but thought I am not ready I always had some lame excuses so never shared anything before.
I am doing a fresh start now , able to convince myself to share something..
Hi !! to all the developers who are making this family truly amazing and fantastic :)6 -
If you are one of those developers that always complains that you would do it better, complains after decisions are taken, complains for missing features and refuses to actually do something about it...
You are a dick.3 -
Soooo
I kind of always knew that you can make the terminal background transparent. But I can't believe I never thought of this
There's something so calming about my terminals now. I just can't explain what it is :^)17 -
Why The Fuck do you always have to say "Yes"?
I'm asking for a goddamn opinion. Give me an opinion.
But no, everything I say must be fucking gold 'cause it's always "yes", "you're right", "good idea", "I agree".
It's irritating as hell. It's "yes" even when I say something stupid on purpose.
Learn to say no, for fuck's sake.12 -
Always use an editor with color syntax highlighting. About 20 years ago I spent 3 days and nights debugging something that was a simple typo error. Since then I always use an editor with color syntax highlighting.7
-
I enjoy watching the Microsoft events, as they always introduce something completely new, that no one's really made before. Unlike certain companies *cough* Apple *cough* who just slap a better processor on their existing devices and calls it "revolutionary". I like all this innovation7
-
Woke up to an email from someone, saying that a blog post (tutorial) I had made really helped them. It's always nice to hear that I've made something that helps people. But idk, there's something special about getting that feedback via email, maybe because it takes more steps to send an email..?3
-
So, there's something I really don't understand.
Everyone here is complaining about Windows and that it "always BSODs".
I've only seen 4 Bluescreens in the entire time I used Windows. That is over 7 years.
So, what are you doing to your computer to cause so many Bluescreens?11 -
What is your favourite thing about programming?
Mine is that there is always something new to learn11 -
I always giggle when I search something like "how to kill zombies" in stackoverflow :v
hope not a repost, sorry for the light1 -
Oh, my boss never fails to amaze me...
Every fucking time he talks about changes to someone outside the team he says something like:
"we always gotta be prepared for breaks because it is always like that, you change something here and when you see you broke something there"
All in a manner that *tries* to bring tensions down.
And every time I explain to him why the fuck automated tests are important and wtf they do he always manage to understand it as a waste of time...
I'm never gonna give up, motherfucker.2 -
1. If you dont know, say: Let me check that and get back to you.
2. ALWAYS use legit test-data and test-images.
3. Never argue ten minutes about something you can fix in ten minutes.
4. Fuck blame or glory. Just refactor and commit and feel proud about youself.1 -
'Member when we were used to Internet explorer back in the Windows XP era and when we download stuff we always used to click run and never care about something called downloads folder and the only issue was that the temp folder used to fill our damn hard drives very quickly?
I 'member2 -
Tough days are standard are they not?
A good ritual is forcing yourself outside and get some fresh air, don’t have a single thought of what it is you were doing and just destress.
I also find punching something therapeutic aswell so there’s always that option 😅 -
Why is it that newbies always fail to read their error messages and bring their laptop saying something went wrong.4
-
My friends just got me the best birthday present ever. Always wanted a rubber duckie, never thought I'll have something even better, my own Tux - will call him Tuxy 😊🐧8
-
“You’ll be working in a fast-paced environment…” ALWAYS means “We’re incompetent, we don’t realize it, we don’t hire enough people to spread out the workload, we don’t have a real process, and we’ll blame you, the new guy, the first time something goes wrong.”4
-
Giving up/panicking/talking myself down when shit gets difficult ;/.
I always want stuff to work immediately, and I hate it when I don't understand something.
But since this is such a big part of working in dev, I should learn to keep going!2 -
auto.self.whatever.rant()
A few years ago, we had a lesson on git and stuff, and we had to create our first repository and push something on it to get familiar with the thing.
Our teacher jokingly said at the end "And always remember, no password in a repository!", and I thought to myself "who can be dumb enough to do actually do something like that?"
Now, guess which piece of shit had to reinstall two of his fucking servers because of security issues coming from not one but github repositories?4 -
Another "prank" that I did at my school when I was 13:
Changed the password for the admin user with "net user *" and took control over alot of PC's in my school. I used that power to install keyloggers and then got alot of passwords for popular social networks that was popular that that time.
Always fun to upload picture ultrasound picture and write something, their parents would always go crazy.
And again, never got caught
(I starting to realize that I am a real asshole)2 -
I'm not sure *why*, but I increasingly see the following pattern:
Challenge a primarily OO / imperative dev by saying OO or imperative styles aren't always a good fit, and that a stateless functional approach can offer advantages, and you often get something akin to:
"Yeah, it's new to me so I'm still working my way around it, but I get that. Makes a lot of sense."
Challenge a functional dev by saying the functional style isn't always best, and in some cases functional isn't a good fit, and you tend to get:
"YOU IMBECILE! YOU ARE SIMPLY CONSTRAINED BY YOUR YEARS OF MINDLESSLY FOLLOWING THE OO HERD! FUNCTIONAL IS ALWAYS SUPERIOR!! ALWAYS, I TELL YOU!!"
I mean geez guys, calm down and learn it's just another tool in the toolbox. I get that popular paradigms emerge and have their die-hard supporters, but I didn't even see this kind of thing when OO became the "new thing everyone needs to use for everything" in the 90's.3 -
My boss. Always forgets what he assigned me to do and assigns me to do something different just about each time we meet2
-
Fucking frontenders…
So tired of your fucking hip things…
Always something new…
Always something ”innovative”
Fucking MB and MB and MB of images…
Make it fast you imbecils! It’s 2023!12 -
Made me always think something like:
Code: should i delete it or just comment it out?
Files: should i delete this file or just rename it as .old?
OldHW: should i put it in the bin or i can recycle some parts?
Etc...... -
I've noticed something funny about linux-users.
There always seem to be 2 big groups.
1. Are contempt with using stock Ubuntu/Debian/Fedora and usually don't know much about, how their OS works on the inside.
2. Work their way through every part of their system and complain, that arch or gentoo arent customisable enough12 -
I've always thought the "can you hack my facebook accout?" rants a little exaggerated.
Then it happened to me twice.
For fuck's sake, is that damn social media site so ingrained in your puny little brain that you can't ask me something else? Is "what do you program" not the more obvious question?1 -
Why isn't this working? I've wrote this same type of code at least 1000 times. Why must there always a problem? Literally every time I try and get something done there is always some stupid error and it's PISSING ME OFF. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY BRAIN AN...oh...I misspelled "fucntion"8
-
Always when I have some excessive amount of spare time, something always gotta go wrong and waste 90% of that available time for fucks sake.
Wanted to install raw antergos on my new usb for pure chrooting into it, but it gets stuck on preparing the disk and there seems to be no solutions to it.6 -
So about a month ago I started this project for myself and decided I would work on it almost everyday, even if it was just for 30 minutes!
But when I get home I'm always so tired all I can do is sit, almost brain dead and watch something (youtube, netflix, whatever).
Anyway, haven't touched it since that first week.12 -
"You always know when you have a good tester, because you're always a little annoyed when that person comes around your desk/cube. The reason for this is that you know that if the tester is in your general vicinity, they've found something wrong with what you've written. All the excuses start to pile up in your mind of 'Well, you're not using it right!', etc, but in the end, you know that the tester is right, and you've just made a mistake in your programming."
I'm too lazy to learn git, every time I try to push something, I always get an error that I can't solve.
So instead I email all my projects to myself, save them in a pen or Google Drive.24 -
OS as weeddealers:
Windows has standard weed. Nothing special, but reliable.
Linux got a great selection, but you always gotta haggle with him for hours until something works out.
Mac sells oregano.8 -
Never tell normal people (non-developers) how much time it took you to build something.
They will always be like 'I thought that was a 2-day work'3 -
The ability to understand every codebase immediately to the point where I:
* don't need to rely on the documentation
* know exactly where bugs are
* know how a change (bug fix, new feature, etc.) affects other areas of the project recursively
Obviously because it's a waste of time hunting that occur when modifying a codebase, no matter how carefully one writes tests or tests their code, something could always sneak in because it's not always apparent how a change ripples through your codebase.
It's tiresome and especially annoying when working with core modules1 -
There's always a moment when your entire codebase starts breaking up piece by piece and you just wonder why did you choose this job, why you are a programmer, why you don't work at a bar or something like that9
-
Is there anyone else who copy something useful. Paste it and after a minute when you need to copy something else, you remember that you copied something important before, but you can't remember what. And you need to paste it to check what it was so you don't lose something important.
But there always only useless shit.8 -
I'm literally the only one who locks the screen here at work.
Always makes me wanna do something to teach then.
My boss always leaves the screen unlocked with sublime opened and goes to lunch!
I think someday he was logged into production also...
And I'm like: seriously? wtf...
I lock my screen even when I'm home alone... yes I'm that paranoid...
No one is gonna "Greek question mark" me 😂18 -
I swear my ISP has already done away with net neutrality. My connection is always going out whenever I need to look something up for work.3
-
Security!
Offensive and defensive at both code and infrastructure levels.
So many times I see devs not give a flying pancake about security. Whether it be rolling integers for sql injection or permission guarding to prevent someone executing something they shouldn't.
Why is security in this industry always the last thing to be concerned about when it's the first thing that's going to kill your business.
😓7 -
At my first internship I always had to cleanup the lunch area (after the lunch of course) and they would leave everything... One guy even left the crusts of his bread and so I had to cleanup everything. But the same guy one time left the crusts of an crusty bread roll... I mean what, how? WHY?? Who would do something like this?11

!rant
Hey all... I have a question...
So, I m really burnt out of coding (C++ guy here)... I have always been learning something but never built anything... I really wanna make some game or something but it jst takes soooo long... M really lacking motivation and m soooo through learning stuff for now...
Please suggest what do i do? (Cant change language... I find all others boring... No offense)12 -
My boss always like to say: damn, every time we fix something something else breaks.
And I always tell him about TDD, unit tests, etc...
He smiles and continues to work as if nothing have been said...
He sits behind me and is constantly "wtfucking" and I'm here just thinking that he might have broken something that could have been avoided if he listened to me.
We are working on separate projects now and every time I think that someday I'm gonna join that code it gives me goosebumps 😵😓1 -
On any given morning, when I"m not quite sure what to tackle first.... there's always:
sudo apt update
Ahh, now I feel like I did something.
"dude! are you hacking!?"
shutup, haven't had coffee yet. -
Have a positive mindset. If the work in general sucks, you can almost always find some micro or nano task that you can focus on. Then you find something more fun to work with and switch job. But until then, stay positive and be happy. And use devrant to blow off steam.
-
(1) Datetimes. Seriously, fuck 'em.
(2) Everybody always thinking: Come on, that little feature is so simple. It couldn't possibly take a whole week to develop.
(3) Nobody really caring or understanding or forgetting after you've told them that if you cut corners and do something the dirty way, it adds to the effort and time needed to maintain or build new features. -
Axioms of writing software for your own business
(or working on your own projects that actually have to get produced in the real world)
Axiom #37: It is always a lot more fun to start something new, then to finish the thing that *was* new and exciting when you last tried to finish a thing.1 -
❤ I can be as creative as I want.
❤❤ It never gets boring.
❤❤❤ There is always something new to learn!3 -
My biggest distraction at coding are my parents.
I still live in there house and it's really comfy.
But whenever I code the always come into my room with something random like "my phone is not working" or "how can I delete this?"
I love my parents and Im glad that I can help but always get off where I was after 😂7 -
Man fuck Facebook, log on hardly ever, feel caged by family who won't let me permanently leave, and when I do log on it's always something depressing shit.
My phone auto jumped me back to devRant and some ++ action and cool new rants...so much better, even with the down votes from the "I don't know what I'm doing here" crowd.5 -
Product people always have something to say in a meeting 🤦♀️, regardless of beneficial or not. They just need to speak. It's like they have an urge inside to pee, and they have to let it go in a meeting. Always.3
-
Drink. Coffee.
I always make sure I learn something new everyday even just small bits of information. -
There are comments in prod code which say "need to change after POC" or something similar in multiple places.
Also, something that was designed to check something, but the call is made in such a way that it always returns true.
Best part, all the original authors left the company before I joined this team.1 -
So something annoying about the bathrooms here is that they are automatic flush only. There's always used toilet paper in the bowl because as soon as you move an INCH to wipe, it flushes. And you can't flush again.10
-
Importing modules in python is the biggest shit i have done in my life. ALWAYS SOMETHING IS NOT FOUND. I have no fuckin clue who came up with this shit. I fuckin hate python for that so so much
EASY LANGUAGE GO TO HELL14 -
Was so used to saving my codes after i write something (ctrl+s) that i always ended up pressing them on browsers and after i copy and paste files.8
-
I'm kinda insecure about my main focus being web stuff. I'm pretty good at it and it comes naturally - and more importantly, there are tons of web jobs. But I've always wanted to do something more unique and interesting, you know? I don't wanna introduce myself as web developer.3
-
As always, in the worst moment. I was waiting to finish something, and then the power went down for a second, couldn't even save 😥😢1
-
You may always feel behind. You aren’t alone. Find something you enjoy within coding. Don’t be a hero and pick all the tickets. Pick what you can achieve. Pick a long-term ticket that you can call yours and own it and learn from it.
BE KIND YO YOURSELF.2 -
Today.
I hate everyone.
I can't wait to stop working here, and I curse my inability to say 'no' out of pity.
I should have left them in the pit of smoking shit they dug for themselves, but NO i let them drag me in as always, even though I had all the rights to tell them to fuck off. But no, fucking 'good-hearted' me. I'm a hypocrite.
And so I managed to do something in the beginning, something in the middle, something a hour ago, then sent some messages around just to let everyone know I'm here, and the remaining 90% of the time I just let myself sink in my hatred for all of this.
Definitely not a productive day.5 -
Always include import statements. Always. No excuses. I don't care if you can't be arsed to copy-n-paste an extra bit of code.
Nothing worse than trying to learn something new, copy-n-paste a sample code then your wonderfully helpful IDE asks you which of the 8 matching packages you wish to import.
When someone asks me, "where did you get that", I don't simply say, "a shop"!!
If you don't include your imports in answers then I hate you.6 -
I hate Sass.
When installing all NPM dependencies with npm i, it's always quick, but not with sass. Ooooh myy goood. It starts compiling. It always misses something. Your node version is always not what sass needs. It pulls out gyp which requires some native shit. The build is never reproducible, it always fails with some horrible two mile long poorly-formatted stacktrace that is just gibberish.
More than that, sass is just poorly designed tool used by frontend fuckboys to write imperative, nonstandard, non-maintainable styles. If you know shit about css, you don't need sass.
I'm so happy it's going to die along with gulp. Webpack and css modules are here.
Yes, css-in-js that has a runtime penalty is also shit. If you like its syntax but dislike everything else, use Linaria. It has no runtime penalty and looks just like other css-in-js solutions.14 -
do you guys think it's dangerous territory to do something you weren't asked to do at work?
like, i know i can improve some minor inconveniences, but they are not the priority. on the other hand, we always have a bigger problem and the little stuff gets left behind. idk, i just want to leave things better than i found them9 -
Chances are configurable in the project. Custemer didn't understand why something ALWAYS happened when he set it to 100%
-
1. Nothing lasts forever and you always need to be prepared for change.
That might be technology acquired by other company and dropped completely by all of people or new technology take over the market for a year and is gone after that and no one remember about it.
2. If you go opposite way then all of people around you that might be actually the best way.
That learned me to always look around for new stuff cause this small stuff that people make today can be big company next day just cause they got annoyed by things and start something new.
3. Trust nothing that you see.
Bugs are everywhere
4. Quality and speed doesn’t matter when you start doing something but consistency matters a lot.
When you start doing something you suck and you need to be ok with fact that you’re going to make lots of stupid mistakes and learn from them.
When you start new prototype you don’t need dozen tools to finish it, you don’t need performance or perfection, you need consistency to finish it.
Good luck -

Stuff is so rapidly depricated in javascript that you always have to add current year in Google searches to find something relevant.
"Dammit, this answer is from 2016, probly no good today". -
Been depressed and bored for the past two days, wish I'm always like this. why?
I learned how to MVVM in WPF and Android.
If only Apple creates something similar to what Microsoft and Google did for data binding.
If it exists please let me know :)9 -
I think bugs are always my fault..
Still after so many years on this project I alwaaaaays go debug/recheck what I coded first before checking the old code and data...usually turns out it's something long before me that's still fucked up & buggy, but still.. I always think I managed to fuck up something.. :/ I need an egotrip/egoboost or sth.. but I doubt even this'd help.. I know my code is not pictureperfect, but still.. I never think it's good enough..and that it has bugs.. o.O I also have a bit sex daily so I dread to write/fix anything in js.. -
Just curious; what kind of music do you guys listen to while coding? I tend to listen to all kinds of instrumental music, which I find great for keeping focus.
Please do share if you're sitting on a great playlist for coding, it's always fun to listen to something new!20 -
When the management always knows better that something IS possible, and if you're wrong they just tell you to ask the other dev on the team...

I'm looking at someone's shit code... and I have to remind myself... we all have the ability to be fucking stupid, especially when we're trying to do something in order to do something else so that we can do something else.
note to self: "always remember, they did the best they could with the resources they had at the time".
But that doesn't change the fact that I need to clean up the crap they left behind.5 -
Day 2 of devWholesome...
Have another great day! Have fun and do something productive! It is always a great feeling when you finish something that requires a lot of time and effort. Finish that project that you started but never finished, clean your room, or maybe just catch up on school work! Make sure you are also taking care of yourself with your hygiene and to eat all your meals and drink plenty of water. If you are feeling stressed today, take a break and relax! And again, make the most out of your day!4 -
Look at this guy. He can barely talk but already be messing with some tech stuff.
I remember myself from the age of five. I remember two things: how they asked me how old I was and I looked at my hand showing all five fingers and that I always knew I’ll be doing something tech when I grow up.6 -
The feeling of never being good.
Even thou I am a new programmer, everyone I meet tell me the same stuff. "You will almost never feel good at something". And yes, I never do, even with things I'm fairly good at I still think I haven't grasped it yet. Always new sites and resources to check out, always new things to dig into.
Althou it is what defines us as programmers. To being able to learn and adapt. To explore and being curious, to learn and to advance.2 -
It's sad when I see a seemingly cool job and it says something like: "required 69 years of professional Java experience". Why lock the opportunity to a certain technology?
I haven't used Java professionally but I have used it throughout university and I can get by. And I'm always willing to learn. Weird stuff!2 -
Be prepared to get it wrong, accept it and learn from it. Also if another dev corrects something you've done, don't take it personally. You can always learn from others.1
-
Story of coding affecting my dating?
Well whenever I start a new language, I always find myself having difficulties with time and date structure-
Wait, that's not the subject? ... oh the other kind of "date". Well, not finding difficulties for something I'm not looking forward to lol -
Start a company after finishing school for not to be a slave to other companies. (It won't be easy)
Either way, I'd like to follow a path that I genuinely feel good about. Otherwise it's soul destroying to work just for the money. You have to always believe what you're doing for achieving something serious in life in my opinion.
Oh, and stay away from Windows. -
I always make the mistake of choosing the wrong courses thinking that I might learn something. I learn nothing and I drop out of the course as a result.
I always forget that my university is not a place to learn anything. It's just for a fucking piece of paper no more, no less so I should take the easiest courses to just pass by.4 -
No matter the hard work you want to do, how much time you want and really spend to complete something, always a scumbag project manager will set the dates so that you won't make it in f*ing time!! Really now, it is frustrating!!
Well, I moved to a new company and all seems vanilla. But you know. Now I have this lesson to remind myself.4 -
The urge I always feel for proving that I'm not as selfish, arrogant and costive as I look sometimes, specially when I'm trying to explain my colleagues about the amount of stupidity I find in something they've done.2
-
Everytime I am developing an API (from scratch, not when extending an old one) I try to return 418 HTTP error code in places that aren't yet developed or mainly when something that shouldn't have happened did actually happened. (example: failed non-essential assert, yes python)
So it's always lighter on lungs seeing people running around with wtf.png faces when their browser says "I AM A TEAPOT".2 -
Just got this popup again, and it always comes right in the middle of me doing something. And of course there's no "remind me in an hour" - if you select "Try in an hour" it usually just automatically installs and restarts your computer in an hour, instead of asking you again.2
-
Best thing about being a developer, for me, is that there is always something new to learn and improve upon.
-
!rant
What is something I can complete in a week (let's say 30-40 hours) as a newbie (I made an android app, played around with engines like unity and unreal here and there, tried some c#, and I always mess around with the linux command line, my RPi, etc etc)? I'll start working in a dual-studying job ('applied CS') in 2 weeks so I'll have enough learning-without-doing to do. I just want to learn something by doing something useful (e.g. a small android app that I can put ads in or sell, or maybe provide something for free that people like. I don't want to write my own engine( that'd take very long anyways) or make a compiler because I feel that'd be kind of useless and even though it'd probably be fun, I would lack initiative.5 -
I will never work on something interesting within a company, it's always going to be either making a site for donuts or some recommendation system type of capitalistic bullshit.
Maybe, I could become a PM and do category theory at work instead of drinking coffee at the balcony1 -
I'll never understand distro hopping. You're having something that works fine and that you're used to. You can always change the look by using another DE. But you prefer to throw it all away, try something else, end up deceived, try something else.
Just, why? Educate me, what are you exactly looking for that makes you want to change after some time?11 -
Our company does internal projects. I send emails to owners with all the links for a sales funnel. 2 weeks go by, no feedback, we launch, and then I get changes.
Sometimes months will go by and one guy will notice something on a page and be like 'how longs this been there?'
Months... Did you read the email?
Always the same guy.4 -
Is it just me or have you also realised that you have always been wanting to build something like devRant AFTER using it.
-
I have personally struggled a little with CMake always. I usually have to take help from some senior dev. Today I was able to figure something out on my own so this is an achievement story. Think I should treat myself with a book3
-
1. I can be both lazy, and productive
2. I will always have something new to learn, always.
3. It is fun.3 -
Damn i want to make an Alarm to alert me when Gradle is finished building.
When waiting gradle build i always get mad because sometime i always left it to do something else and then forgot about it and ended up coming back with more wasted time.6 -
Sometimes I get so excited about doing something that I'm genuinely happy. But when the initial high fades and I'm ten layers of complex code problems deep I always remember how useless I really am
Oh but this time it's gonna be different.
yeah right4 -
Me and the dba are slowly migrating parts of our JVM stack into .NET AND even tho I love and will always love Java and its ecosystem....I am glad.
IIS as a server is something that I actually look forward to since deploying shit to it is always a breeze
Installing ssl certs is a breeze
Everything is a fucking breeze
Before any of you cocksuckers say anything: this is my opinion only5 -
Now for the more modern version! :D
I always thought those books weren't good for actually learning something but those are really good and changed my mind ^^1 -
Story time:
I'm late for a meeting. It's between client, coworker and me. It's different from a normal meetings. So I ask my friend something along the lines of "How to connect to a 3 person call."
His reply: "Did you really just ask me how to connect to a 3 way."
I guess there's always time for one of those jokes -_- -
Yo guys, all the ranting aside, I just wanted to remind you that you ALWAYS have a choice, that you should speak up when something bothers you for too long and that you should be aware about all your strengths and unique skills! Just as a reminder ✌️2
-
I got the requirements specifications today.... for something I've worked on for a year and is 9 months delayed due to design constantly changing and management always lagging behind.
Best part is specifications have requirements we have no chance of meeting in time.
Yet another failed deadline. Yafd2 -
Stress has always been my biggest problem in development. The constant imposter syndrome when I get a project from the team is something that I can't seem to get over.2
-
xamarin forms sucks..
Everytime I want some widget or something even simple, they tell me to use custom renderers (write it natively on each platform)..
so, how is that supposed to be cross-platform..
after all, like I always said, to use xamarin efficiently, you must have good knowledge on native development for each platform10 -
The one thing that pissed me off more than anything in the world, is when I was trying to develop something cool or learn a programming language, only to be scolded for 'playing games all day'. No matter what I tried to say, that was always the accusation.2
-
On Fridays I always write notes to my future self when I leave in the middle of something. I always start these notes like this:
Dear Future fyroc,
You are awesome!1 -
Tbh Myself ... Ive always admired people who do awesome things and for quite a time I thought if myself as incapable to do something like that, and whenever I tried I either failed or just dropped the project, so I had to learn to believe in myself and to use dissapointments as a building platform and dont let em discourage me.2
-
I got their financial support to pursue higher education in CS and move abroad.
However, I've never really got their constant emotional support. Each decision I was taking, I always had to prove myself, which can be tiring and unmotivating, since I'm expecting uncoditional love and support from my parents, not an interview and a selling pitch for myself every time I tell them something1 -
Something about my experience in a startup that I co-founded as a developer is that I feel like everyone always depends on me for almost everything. So when I just want to jump in and code, I have to be worried about who's gonna call me for what tedious reason. It really gets to me.
-
Just recently got a new job.
On the old jobs we've always held connection via mail, slack, fb messenger groups and whatever.
But on this new IT job they have this really weird theory of that when you want something, you've to stand up, walk to the coworkers booth, and use this super odd "voice" communication.
Such a barbaric routine!2 -
On wednesday we always work from 10:00 untill 20-21:00 because of weekly meetings with product owners who have a full time job besides being a product owner..
Its okay, we get free food and often have a couple beers, but the last weeks its been killing me...
Other people bail out because they want to do something with their friends that evening but I always feel like its a commitment we made as a team so as lead dev I should be there..
Think next week im going to bail out for a time2 -
Just wanna admit something (which I don't do often)....
Am I the only one who makes almost every day at least 5 typo's? It drives me crazy 😭 Sometimes I just think.. WHY?! WHY DO I ALWAYS MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE?!
But yeahh.. That's off my heart now.. Thanks 😁9 -
idk how people have time/passion to work on side-projects after work.
or is it just me, who always wants to build something, but ultimately feels stuck, tired and hopeless.
how do I get back to that state when developing stuff was fun?5 -
My pc has this weird glitch where anytime I install or uninstall a Steam game my headset microphone (Logitech G933) mutes, and I can only unmute it again after a couple of seconds. It's been this way for the longest time (though not always) and I have not the slightest fucking clue what could be causing it. Anyone else ever heard of something like this?9
-
I always thought working remotely from home would be the dream. Now instead of a boss giving me shit, I get to listen to my girlfriend complaining about how much I work. God forbid I spend time doing something I enjoy.3
-
When you're writing a function to check whether a record exists before you create it, make you sure check *before* you create it!!
Spent ages debugging something earlier which was always returning a hit even though I wasn't expecting it but then I realised the record was being added before I ran my check, therefore always said it was found.
Sometimes I'm an idiot.1 -
Why do all these fucking stores not sell anything that isn't crap ? Our waste centric culture pisses me off when I can't just always buy something new immediately on something else wearing out
Goddamn getting back on my feet a million times crap !9 -
Always check if you are on the test or the prod system at least 1000 times before cleaning up the customers database.
This happend twice to my team.... At least our customers admins were pretty chill and said they learned something from this. -
when you're teaching the freshman, and they're flipping out over trying to understand c compiler errors, while you think to yourself "just wait till that first bug that only breaks something sometimes but you don't always notice..."
-
I always love trying something new, especially when it's Linux.
In this case, I'm installing Plasma Mobile on my phone to see how it handles.undefined maybe gf will move to riot after this oh well i wish it had more mainstream applications wish me luck1 -
One thing I have truly learned from software development is DON'T REINVENT THE WHEEL. Someone out there may have already implemented such functionalities and if the library is missing something a PR is always welcomed! (Obviously taking about open source libraries)6
-
1) clicking on the wk141 tag wouldnt show the wk140 rants
2) big titty mafia mommy gf
3) when i buy something i always have the exact price on my bank account -
When you ask someone for something and they say this is how we've always done it. 😩😩😩. I die a little on the inside.2
-
Always nice when you discover that your hardware has an *ELABORATE* HARDWARE OFFLOADING ENGINE with full protocol implementation for something you spent two months writing software for...
Well, at least the current solution works like it is supposed to. Don't know that yet of the hardware implementation.
It would save 4 euro component cost though if we switch to the offloading engine -
I just noticed that whenever I get a captcha to prove I'm human, it's always images from the street.. cars, crosswalks, traffic lights, trucks, bikes, tractors etc etc...
I just want to know... Who's ML model I've been helping to train for the last i don't know how many years?!? 😤
I should've realized something smelled funny the moment i understood that a bot is asking me to prove my humanity to it, by doing something that a bot should be able to do by now.6 -
Meanwhile today, somewhere in America
Fan - "Apple is great. Added two camera on the same phone and 7MP camera om front. Totally irrational. Who does that. Ever heard anyone provided "7" MP camera, all they provide is non-prime and rational. Apple always bring something new and great that others cant "7 -
I can't fucking read adobe *eks deh* ever as what they intended it to be, it always seems like the author of the comment / .. is a gen Z laughing out loud about something.6
-
Programming gave me a sense of accomplishment. The feeling of being able to dream something up, and then make that come to life, and always improving yourself as you go. What else gives you the same flexibility to change and add on to projects? All of this combined for my love of math and mechanics, and I found that programming was my true love!
-
Boss calls a team leads meeting which is just me and the other guy. Rest are product or project managers.
Turns out they concerns over how our last few sprints are always left unfinished as the work in it doesn't get passed QA.
Tried to tell him how can devs work on something that failed QA on the last day of the sprint.
We have one QA person who tests 20 something devs work. We are massively under resourced and yet they want us to do everything and always end up making promises to clients that we can't keep coz our sprint doesn't have capacity.
Yet they are hiring more product managers instead of getting some more QA help.
Sick & tired of this shit. -
What is the functionality that you have always wanted to have in a blog???
Need suggestions.
> Please, something that makes sense in a blog.18 -
Remember folks, always test your code. Even if you're sure about your ideas there is something you haven't considered that fucks up everything driving you insane.
-
One minute my life seems to be getting better. The next it feels like it will just always get worse. Not being reliably employed is something I’ve always feared and made an effort to have contingencies for. But I’m out of contingencies and beginning to have to start all over again with something completely different due to my apparent cognitive decline. It’s a huge pile of anxiety and is creating upheaval in all my relationships with people. I don’t know how much more of this I can handle.1
-
It’s always fun when you are asked to push to production on a friday afternoon...Because the project managers and owners won’t have be the ones who have to fix something on a friday night or weekend 🤷♂️
-
Dear PM, if you ask me something let me fucking finish my answer!
I know there's some audio lag (remote meetings) but shit, you always do this!3 -
always wanted to learn to use Linux, but school and c# has kept me on Windows, but I finally have Ubuntu on Windows, what should I start learning? please don't say the basic commands, learnt those ones, like is there a project or something I can plug into, and struggle with, and eventually learn from? Thanks!4
-
Scrolling through and was reminded of something I despise - Windows Update. It always decides to strike while I'm on a tea break and I can't postpone it.
The amount of VM corruption I've had to deal with is ridiculous.5 -
"… another misinterpretation that’s always bugged me: Ship early, ship often OR Ship quality product. Quality isn’t something to be sacrificed … Ship early, ship often, sacrificing features, never quality." - Kyle Neath

My Windows laptop randomly shut down 3 times tonight. I then had to completely reboot, but it looked as if the computer just went to sleep. Always at the worst times too just as I went to do something. Seriously, Microsoft?3
-
It's been four years. It is time.
My nickname is a pun. There was this thing called “bouba/kiki effect” that demonstrated the linguistic perception of two MEANINGLESS words. So, I jokingly made them mean something. What's the most primitive, most basic meaning imaginable? Yes, it's “good” and “bad”. So, “kiki” is “good”, and “bouba” is “bad”. Done.
My code is straight up kiki.
Your code is always bouba.
Here's where it all started: https://devrant.com/rants/2981477/...15 -
The most fun I have while programming is when I work on something that I enjoy. Even if it won't be a huge project in the end, working on an interesting idea is always the most fun I can have.
I am sure most people can relate, too. -
The only thing that sometimes bothers me about having IT knowledge (specially now that I'm officially an IT Engineer graduate) is that I still have friends that can't do simple things that they asked me when I was at highschool.
"My computer is not working", " I can't install this game", "My computer doesn't start".
Since I'm okay with helping others, I always try to help. The thing is that everytime I help is always something I google at the moment. And most of times is simple problems that don't even need to be googled2 -
Can I rant about how I am so curious that when I try to learn a new thing I always end up reading for something completely unrelated?1
-
I don't like when maintainers ask me how their module works in review. >:c
It always works me up a little bit.
And when people spawn process for something that can be done with unistd. >>:(
I think it's not professional. -
I'm so sick of stupid little bugs. Not proper bugs like, I don't know, a memory leak or something significantly wrong, it's always a bloody semi colon or backtick...
-
Is there a program which is good for simply looking at code? It wouldn't be an editor per say, but a viewer. It should be tailored around code, have the usual highlighting, color themes is welcomed, maybe something that highlights comments, documentation and so on.
For development on Windows, this role have always been filled by Notepad++ for me because of its integration to the context menu. It does the job, but I'm wondering if there is actually something like this on the market.17 -
Is it just me or there is always a work emergency (or clients suddenly needing something new done right now) on the day before leaving for holidays?1
-
I never want to do another SSRS report ever again... It’s mind numbing and tedious and crashes visual studio more than it builds. And yet, there are always more to do. Always... I swear I’m going to drown in all the paper. Queries aren’t bad but seriously, can’t go an hour without something crashing itself.
-
So this is just something I'm curious of, but when following guides/tutorials how do you challenge the information you're learning? like how do you retain the information.
I typically take notes and make something different with the information but Ive just always wondered how others go about it.15 -
I keep thinking that I need to set up my site for a portfolio or something, but then I remembered that I'm really bad at coming up with designs.
Have tried to look up some other sites for inspiration, but I always get these really impressive sites that me feel even more potato :c2 -
So I’ve been programming for a little over a year now. Not too long, but long enough to realize something.
Everyone always talks about imposter syndrome and I don’t understand it. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like an imposter when I code, or that I’m a dumbass and can’t code or something(Well, I have definitely felt like a dumbass when I code but that’s because I am sometimes)
What makes you feel like you have imposters syndrome and how so?6 -
maaan its such awkward, if you're chilling on a supermarket parking lot, with your 20mph moped drinking your one end of work beer and also have long hair and long beard 😂 im always thinking the people think im a homeless or something like that.. fml what a world1
-
What fonts do you use?
I've always used the editor default font, but now I want something that looks nicer...17 -
Me always: never installing MacOS updates because something always breaks
Mac always: Updates available! Install now??
Me today: *installs MacOS updates*
Mac today: *refuses to boot*6 -
EVERY FUCKING VACATIONS I'VE EVER HAD SINCE HIGH SCHOOL, when I first learned to code.
Since then there have always been some school or uni assignment or something croaked in production while I was away and n00bs couldn't hack it. -
I started in Lua in a program called AMS (it made autorun programs but has full scripting support making it pretty powerful) making little software applications.
That evolved into PHP and shortly after JS, HTML and CSS.
After a while i added other languages and it continues to grow today.
The UI aspect has just been something i have always had an eye for. -
Not to sound self centric, but a cyborg clone of myself with close to but not fully true consciousness.
Would always have something to talk about and would probably be a great pair programming partner as we'd be almost in sync and on same wavelengths ;p -
There is a job fair coming up next week and while i dont really want to find a new job, i thought this would be a good excuse to update my cv a bit.
My question is, do you have any templates/frameworks/anything you usually use for stuff like this? I always throw together some bootstrap page but i want to learn something new.1 -
When you spend most of the time editing you .vimrc instead of the code you supposed to edit. Proper syntax highlighting, plugin management, some useless autocmds that you don't even understand - there is always something to do.2
-
Day 9 of devWholesome...
Dedicate some time to learning something new or pick up a new hobby! Software development may be fun, but sometimes it can be frustrating and time consuming. Take some time off to do something else as well. Maybe learn an instrument or learn how to draw. I have decided to pick up drawing and am practicing to have nice looking art (might even post in a later devWholesome post). Learning something new can broaden your interests and opportunities. And as always, make the most out of your day!random wholesome positive happy hobby learn devwholesome i slightly broke the embed generator good day4 -
It's always great idea to map common keyboard shortcuts to something completely different, such as when IDEA sets the default behaviour of Ctrl+Y to "remove the line under caret". Thanks guys, I love surprises, next time try something with ctrl+c.
Note to my future self: when installing the IDEA again, remember to remap the ctrl+y..1 -
Waiting for DNS records to update..
It's always a difficult choice; Do I work on something else or do I hope record will be updated in few minutes..
I always choose wrong, will keep you updated :p9 -
Do you always make sure to understand the basics/fundamentals of a technique/solution/tool/.. you're using ?
I don't do it all the time and I feel that it's something I should do more often (or always?).3 -
So i’m jobless and looking for something new. I had three interviews today and i always mention i’m doing a self study on React.js atm.
However after this i also got asked how i want to develop myself in the future and i’m like: wtf? Are you even paying attention here?
Three interviews is a lot. Time for beer! Have a nice weekend!4 -
I always love hearing something worked as a coincidence of some random and supposedly unrelated change in the system that nobody can neither explain nor reproduce?
Don't you? -
I miss when the world still seemed to function off some reasonable system and there seemed like there was always something or someone you could count on14
-
I have a pair of older TVs that contain data readouts. However, because the screens don't always update they are susceptible to screen burns. I'm looking for a screensaver or something that could move around on the screen but not completely make the data disappear. The current running thing we have are the Windows Bubbles screensaver. This allows us to still see the data but it freezes the screens. (No data update)
I need something that will save the screen but still allow the browsers to do their screen updates as usual. -
I feel like I'm destined to always suck at launching websites 😢 whether it's DO or AWS I always seem to fuck something up somewhere 😓3
-
Am I the only one who typically prefers light mode over dark mode on apps? There just always seems to be something about dark mode that just doesn't feel right to me or my eyes. It seems like maybe I'm a freak because of that preference, but luckily it hardly comes up in my day to day life so it's a secret I hide well.3
-
I don’t know about you but I use backticks for every string in js. I want to know that I can always use quotes and apostrophes and backticks ensure this. Also they allow templates and Babel got me covered when it comes to old browsers.
I don’t see the reason why should I use something but backticks in 2020
Again,

effin management always commiting something they didnt think through and now the team suffers the consequences of their stupid actions, one of them is that they fucking commited a night of development phase for a major code revision fuck that shit cause that major revision also came for their fucking lack of analysis and mediocre mindset during the requirements gathering phase fuck that
-
1) communication is the key
2) if you don't understand something, ask
3) people always lie
4) you can always improove
5) if you don't stand up for yourself, noone will
Not so much that coding made me realise this, it's just something that got confirmed once I started working.. -
Something goes very wrong if I done my task in first attempt. There's always things I miss completely and then the shame.
-
I haven't had to work with much legacy code other than mine. I always wonder what I was doing every time I have to fix something in an old project. At least it verifies I am learning and improving my programming skills.
-
It normally starts with installing a new framework, either via composer or npm, then several hours of reading documentation, before giving up for the day. I think to myself I'll pick that up again later...
The good thing is I always learn something from it I can use in other projects. -
Something that I need to learn: not taking it personally when people answer something in which I was wrong by terminating their sentences with "..."
When people finish sentences with an ellipsis, I always assume they're judging me as being stupid or something, but indicating that they're refraining from saying it. Almost feels passive-aggressive. I hate it. But I guess I need to learn not to take it personally.8 -
Arrify nodejs module. I always thought, that a modul is something bigger, not this function with 4 lines. Who thinks, that using a module to make an array of a value instead of copying a 4 line snippet to your code is actually a good idea?4

I can't get anything done
I know I want or have to do something, but I always waste my time on something completely unrelated.
Afterwards I feel bad, and when I notice what I should've done and what I actually did I get a bit depressed
I just don't have the self-discipline for this shit, and I have no idea how to get it3 -
Today I discovered trial and error driven development for myself:
Me, reading spec..
Spec: „Do something with an CSR“ (not the exact wording :D)
So instead of just googling C# + CSR and copying the code examples,
I went like:
What means CSR -> Certificate (Something Something)
-> could be this namespace (Something with „Crypto...“ in its name)
-> could be this class (Something with „Certificate“ in its name)
-> take the easiest overload (string is always nice)
-> try filling in the parameters from the spec
-> start debugger and inspect properties
-> repeat if necessary
I don’t know if this is the correct pattern to proceed my project with...
But hey, today it worked and now I also know, what „distinguished“ means -
I just thought of something. People get butt-hurt when people tell the truth, which is ironically kinda what happened to me. But I’m not mad, I understand lol. Anyways, people always want you to tell the truth, but when you do, they don’t and can’t always accept it. If there were a day where people always told the truth, who knows what would happen, but it wouldn’t be good. But at the same time, people are always holding back their opinions for what? No one’s forcing you, and you don’t really have to. If you see this and there’s something you want to say, to anyone or about anything, even yourself, just go ahead and say it.14
-
Why do updates always say "About" (Windows, Linux and Android also) about the remaining time? Is it because they are having their yoga lession at the time and we are interrupting them or something? Are we actually waiting for m to take their tea? A simple, "Please wait" would suffice I guess...2
-
My phone is always on silent.
If you want something done, leave a message or listen to my phone message which says... Email me details and I'll sort it -
Are there any good plugins/tools or something for visual studio 15 to turn it into a good IDE for PHP developing?
I'm using Brackets now, i tried Eclipse, PhpStorm (too slow and only a 30 day trial) and Atom so far. But idk, theres always something that makes me thinking like "nah.. thats not the right for me". Now i wanted to try VS. I used it for C++ developing and was pretty much in love with it.6 -
I love to tinker with electronics and different embedded boards. For some guys its like I'm hacking government or something. Why everything is always about hacking with people?2
-
🙋 Any fancy app idea I could build for trying out React on web and React Native for mobile? Kinda cool and something you always wanted to build but never got to it. #sayNoToTodos5

Why do I always get errors when I am trying to learn something by following YouTube tutorials like I follow every single step, write the same code but I get errors. I feel like giving up sometimes13
-
Whenever I'm trying to get something done urgently suddenly something wrong happens. And then a chain of 'something wrong' starts. It doesn't matter how many different ways I try, there's always something wrong waiting for me on the way.
And when I try to fix 'something wrong', something else wrong happens.
I feel like this whole universe, each and every atom in this galaxy is trying to fuck me up.3 -
Anyone got too used to ChatGPT until now google feels like a caveman tool?
if you tell chatgpt to write code that uses library X that does something it will provide the snippet ready to be copied
whereas googling it means you have to scroll through results, pray someone asked it on stack overflow before you, otherwise skim through medium articles until you find a code block or something
and yeah ChatGPT doesnt always write working code coz of the knowledge cut-off, i switch to bard sometimes or default to google11 -
The *project* build succeeded so you decided to check in your code changes. OK? WRONG! Always build *the whole solution* before checking in code! Never check in something doesn't build unless you want to make me groan *making groaning noises*

Hey DevRant fam!,
I hope everyone is well as always! I was just curious... Very recently i bumped into a website called 'LeetCode' and was curious about trying to solve some problems for fun. However to me it seems that i get stuck on the wording or it just gets confusing,. I personally always enjoyed building things but wasn't really a fan of doing the actual coding problems from websites like this not sure if that is a terrible thing?, was wondering has anyone else been in this position? Maybe i'm lacking something? :-)
Would love to hear anyone's input! thank you for taking the time to read through my post as always!
Cheers!.2 -
fuck taxes, fuck you gov, you've done shit for me, actually, you're always assfucking me every fucking chance you get. So, yeah, I don't pay it in full, oh no, I put my shit where you can't find it, you fucking leech
you want my taxes, yeah? How bout you get off you fucking cockroach ass and gimme something I'd actually want. Legalize weed or abortion, you sick fuck. Reform the police, for fucksakes! Instead, you're always draggin it, pleasing then herd 🦬 well, then, keep taxing them cows and stay the fuck out of my wallet!26 -
It's always fucking something with my companies buggy internal development tools. Small tasks that turn into figuring out a vague error
-
It's always nice when I get back to work on something I shelved and I find notes from Past Me anticipating my sub-goldfish memory.1

Okay, legit.
I have protanopia (red color blindness) and red text on a screen is always difficult to focus my eyes on. It's like I have different focal points for the screen in general and red text. Is this just a me thing, or am I onto something?12 -
Ppl, always remember to take a walk when you don't know how to do something or when you feel overwhelmed.5

Something along the lines of the Freenet project (I think it was called). That thing has always interested me - especially the privacy and decentralised structure of the concept. I'd make it a world wide thing and get it to every country in every place I could.
-
I know it's not really related to development, but I got in a discussion on twitter and one dude tweeted "in science, 1 isn't 1"
And so I was like "mate what? science is highly dependent on math and in math, 1 is kinda always worth math"
And this this girl comes in and just says:
"it's not true that 1 is always 1 because there's binary code as well"
And was was like totally astonished, like, have you even studied something? 1b = 1d = 1x and it's always 1 in whatever base!
(she even says she's some sort of engineer in her bio)8 -

I really love some of the job posting I saw in my community. It ALWAYS ALWAYS starts with something like this.... We are looking for experience devs that can build platforms LIKE Facebook, Alibaba, PayPal, Amazon...(a lot of big names) .Gosh. Those expectations.

In case you're struggling to learn something new, read this article to feel better. Else just read it anyway to feel better.

always keep learning ;) -
Apparently we can't stick to a single technology for more than one project. There's always something wrong and something to complain about.
Finally got an understanding of typescript+react, and doing web development. But now we are looking into switching to Flutter or ASP.Net Core. Too many technologies out there for web dev.
Anyone have any negative to say about those to hopefully not switch over and have to learn a new tech?8 -
There's quite often the case where friends tell me they're sitting at home, bored, not knowing what to do, and I am like lol I always have something to do. Continue project x or y, trying out that fancy library I found, learning a new language and so forth. I never get bored.
-
FFS THIS SHIT ALWAYS HAPPENS
i got a cool idea i wanted to start working on with some friends maybe open source project ... (i like to think my ideas are cool ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ) i do some research reading and i find something close or the exact same shit i was thinking about already in Kickstarter 😒😒😒😒4 -
I don't know why I always take the hard way when I have an easy way to do something and when I failed then I doubt myself.1
-
Almost all people who are unfamiliar with modern websites don't know that they don't need to 'allow notifications' to access a website's content.
My parent's phone is always showing 99+ notification.
We need to do something about this, we're responsible.4 -
Why do I always get the response: "just comment your code better" whenever im looking into ways to make my files smaller and more pleasant to read by abstracting big chunks into different files.
Or when i want to generate some documentation with storybooks or something.
Is it just me or am i that rebellious by wanting cleaner code..2 -
I need to finish something presentable by May so I decided to make Orchid an untyped language, and the simplicity of all tasks all of a sudden breaks my heart. Static analysis is my guiding principle, the one feature which I always held to be good. Deprioritizing it in _my own programming language_ feels like sacrilege.9

I wonder at this old self assured faggot who was supposedly selling something to homeless people years ago or buying something from them
Endless mountain concrete
Always the same stupid shirt7 -
I have a list of favorites but the first person that always usually comes to mind is John Romero.
I love listening to the talks Romero gives and even though I don’t partake in the practice of developing games I still love hearing his stories about his projects development or having to work with old/retro tech and learn something from those stories. -
I'm always on the lookout for something new to learn..
What should I do next (no particular order)?
TypeScript
AngularJS
Ruby7 -
Realise that your life is being wasted away and if you don’t code nonstop you’ll always fall behind everyone based on job requirements :) then you’ll always want to code something3
-
I always love when I pick C again just for fun. I'm really used to "print" something if I'm not sure about that in basically everything.
You wanna print something in C? Well unless you know what and where it is (no point of print-checking then), it'll just happily crash without any reported error. Not to mention if I wanna find a bug, I don't have to get a debugger! Printf alone is basically a breakpoint! Ah stupid me :D -
So I'm about to apply to a dev job and I don't know how this is going to go over. It seems everywhere I go they want years and years of professional experience I just dont have, being a junior dev and all, but I think I found a company I can get behind. Are there any tips you guys and gals have for me for resume highlights? Possibly questions for my employer, as its one thing that always confused me, they always ask if you have questions and I feel like I'm missing something until I ask but they never seem impressed by my questions.3
-
this is something that's always bothered me, I figured this would be the perfect place to ask. so some projects have files you need for development but can't commit to VCS (for example, files containing AWS keys, certs, etc). I've always dealt with this by just storing them/backing them up on an intranet server not connected to the internet. does anyone have a solution easier than manually distributing these files to new developers via a flash drive?3
-
I always work too much in bursts. Long days of intense work when I’m deep into something, skipping lunch and breaks. Then short days when I take it easy. Would probably be better to work more evenly.3
-
When you make some changes on the server and you warn that there will be annoyances while the changes are being completed, there is always someone who sends you an email with the title in capital letters asking for urgent help because something is wrong.4

My grandmother can't think of me doing something else than being sat all day long, doing nothing in front of a screen and certainly not being tired or exhausted because it. And she always compare it to her, when her job was to sew fancy clothes.
I am not allowed to say it's a real job in front of her. So frustrating. -
If you need to get some chores done but you are procrastinating, just try and do some work on your side project instead. Somehow my house always ends up spotless when I am trying to focus on something else.
-
What's the one movie/TV show that always gets you in a geeky project mood.
Like, makes you want to build, code or at least desire to create something?5 -
I have always thought that lazy people make the best developers. If something is too routine/type consuming/redundant, create a program/function/app that takes care of that.
Share your favorite born-out-of-laziness story.1 -
"SEP" is something I hear a lot from people that work under me. Sadly, for me it's never someone else's problem. It's always mine.
-
mkdir ChuckTesta or MyTestProject or something similar.
I always like to use a sandbox beforehand to experiment with technologies and get familiar with them before committing to an actual project repo. -
Managed to apply Particle.js to my personal website today. It's a lot of fun to play with and you can make some pretty interesting effects. Recommend it to everybody.
Only problem is that Chrome doesn't seem to like this library very much. It doesn't start on Chrome unless your website is on a server (you can always use Live Server or something like that from your code editor). Or you can always try a different browser. It seems to be only a Chrome problem.
Can't wait to get my site live and hear what you guys think. Though, don't expect too much please.8 -
BLOODY FILTER KEYS. Suddenly my keyboard stopped working altogether. Why? Because Windows decided to filter my keyboard out, thanks to some accessibility setting. I had unchecked all the boxes in the accessibility settings, like I always do on a fresh Windows installation - BUT one that I forgot. I've always thought these accessibilty options are a FREAKING NUISANCE! Just because there are a few handicapped people who cannot use a keyboard normally, we all have to suffer :( These settings should be part of the installation like "Enable accessibilty settings by default" instead of something you must remember to disable afterwards.

Fustration? Every time, I'm not good at design, from choosing colors to aligment.
I always end with the try and error method to get something works. -
Always heard programmers bashing on artists because they can't keep consistent naming conventions and keep screwing up this and that. Well, i found something worst: marketing people. At least keep the extension we request on the files you are giving us :(

"You can tear a poem apart to see what makes it tick… You’re back with the mystery of having been moved by words. The best craftsmanship always leaves holes and gaps… so that something that is not in the poem can creep, crawl, flash or thunder in." - Dylan Thomas

Always fun when the thing you've been working on is definitely going to the dark corner of the projects that never get looked at again. Oh well, it was giving me a headache anyway. Can I do something useful now?1
-
Fuck! This shit is driving me crazy! I'm working day and night without any break just because my boss wants everything done yesterday. And even if I complete the project, there's always something more to do. It feels like I'm stuck in a hamster wheel that never stops spinning. Fuck this fucking fucked up situation! I need some goddamn sleep!3

Am I missing something? After going through the Manjaro installation process, turning on the computer and selecting the operating system in the grub menu, it never allows me to boot successfully. I even reinstalled the os and same result. It always says something like this when booting... 😒6

You know I can't imagine something that just isn't always blank being able to survive all this emotionally since it's like purpose is gone from the world now.
The effect of this flattens emotions joys and drive
You people must already be pretty empty of feeling3 -
Pretty new in my company.
Every time i ask something like vcs or other stuff they just tell me do it this or that way, because it's 'grown historically'... I can't hear that anymore... They just don't give advice and show me how to do stuff but not explain... And always say the two words... I can't hear them anymore... -
Just a thought. Writing a program then clicking run, and your code runs first time, should be something that becomes more common place as one improves their coding ability, now that we call development. To be always surprised when that happens, almost seems to say that such is a matter of luck.3
-
Tell me of this seems right: We used to operate (before I started) in a the user is always right way, if a user wanted a button to wipe his/her arse they got it.
I don't understand how a software developer can operate in this way (or am I missing something?) the users are all staff at the school3 -
Biggest hurdle so far has to be school, I've always hated it and am finally done.
It's not that I hate learning or something, I just hate wasting my time doing things that don't matter. -
Am I missing something? I'm a software developer and I like to sove design problems but when I search for something like 'effective problem solving by programmer or software engineer' it always comes down to data structures etc.
I am more interested in design part of it? How can I search for the system designers who are not web designers etc.
What to search for when I want to see how someone has solve interesting system design problem?11 -
Pick up a course, or like in my case a book and start. Try to understand as much as you can, try to write some easy programs that will maybe calculate, convert or display something. Anything, basically. You can always start a course that teaches you straight from the beginning for eg. boe to build a game, website or anything you're interested in. Just one thing to remember. Never make breaks that will last longer than 2 days. Keep on pushing and follow the course. Then you'll definitely achieve something worth your time.

When something is still broken after I fix it
When fixing one bug creates two more bugs
When I am too lazy to do anything at all
When I have to fix bugs in code I did not write
Whether the sun is shining or not,
whether it is hot outside or cold,
I always feel the same...1 -
I am comfortable in using the MERN stack, and i want to make some money out of it like freelancing and stuff. Is mern good for that use case? Or do i have to learn something like django / .net core? Because people here always say that mern sucks and its very slow.. pls help!!13

I lost 30 min to find why a function didn't give me the result.
I've found out why.
Hardcoded with a if with no bracket nor breaklines
Yes, the " if (something) return someotherthing;"
Now I see why it's not always recommended.. -
you know how i hate things that can't be verified without far more man hours than I have available ?
just requires you to take something on faith which may not be vital but it still requires you to take something on faith from a source you don't always trust. -

Any recommendations for a daily planner that runs on Win7?
Prefer to have something desktop based (with Sync if possible) as I always have too many browser tabs open so a web based one will get lost or closed and therefore not do its job. -
Feeling a little frustrated lately, just been a few months in this company and its all great, even my boss congratulated me the last week for deliver some well made features but i think i should be learning more and coding faster, im always giving the best i can but its never enough. (Sorry if i mispell something, english is not my native language)1

What is gonna happen in 8/16, 2048?
(August 16th, 2048)
People are always making dumb conspiracy predictions. Let's make one, like that's the date when AI relinquishes control over the economy to leave earth or something.7 -
I really hate it when I'm fixing an error, whenever I change something in my code I always got new different errors. FML 🔫
