Search - "a mess"
Customer: how will this heading look in bold?
Me: Hold a sec, I will show you *opens developer tools in chrome and increments font-weight*
Customer: NO NO NO, undo this. I don't want you to mess up my website.
Came home to visit parents
Dad - Internet on my laptop isn't working (I switched him on a Ubuntu platform because he picked up a hobby of mining for viruses while doing..... "research" )
Me - did you mess with your networking settings again
Dad - (Defensible sounding) Noou
Me - (looking at settings, networking is switched off)
Me circa 3am - writing a python script to check for this automatically cos fml this is basic
Thanks for listening13
To all the people giving advice in my previous rant (https://devrant.com/rants/1627035/...), thanks!
I've spent a weekend running high and naked through the forest, and decided to quit my job.
Fuck PHP. Fuck Laravel. Fuck hipster startup companies. Rasmus Lerdorf, Taylor Otwell and my CEO can all go suck each other's cocks in a sloppy mess of saliva, cum and type errors.
I'm so sick of spinach smoothies and weakly typed languages. All active record ORMs are retarded, VueJS is worse than JQuery, Fatal error: Call to a member function iHatePHP() on null. WHY DOES PHP EVEN HAVE METAPROGAMMING METHODS, WHY THE FUCK DOES LARAVEL CHOOSE EASY OVER SAFE.
I'm going to use my heavily abused Macbook to surf out of this mess, on a collapsing wave of unresolved bugs.
On to the next PHP/Laravel job at a hipster startup!26
Guy from work: "I have a messy coding style ¯\_(ツ)_/¯".
No, you have a bad coding style. Your repetitive uncommented spaghetti code isn't an artistic expression of your quick imaginative mind jumping from thought to thought. It's a horrible mess that shows me that either you can't do any better or you don't care.8
I read a story about a guy from Greece who wants to delete his gender from his id and my first thought was how many 20 year-old government database schemas that is going to mess up.22
What people say : My computer is a mess and it works damn slow.
What I hear : I don't know fuck about using a computer3
This is a fucking mess!!!
File > New Project
Yeah, fuck it. It'd be easier to just start over.9
I think rather than go clubbing again tonight, I may just stay in and mess around with Linux in an old desktop or play with python a bit...
And have some vodka.20
A guy asked me today after we were having a chat about bad programmers at his work place:
Guy: "What do bad programmers move to after they constantly mess up and get stuck on tasks?"
Because Moment.js is too mainstream,
Oh man I really need to punch person who wrote this shitty file,
1k LOC , whole thing is a mess, this is just a gist of this crap19
Do NOT build something as fast as possible. You are going to end up spending more time trying to refactor the mess than youd have spent drawing a class diagram.7
First time dealing with front and backend web programming. Any advice or tutorials that can help me get on the track with good MVC? I hate having a giant discombobulated mess of an index.php file19
Welp. Time to mess with a new distro
*sudo rm -rf /*
*looks at screen* I forgot to back up my db's :|3
Group of 2
He do the powerpoint and document
I do the whole web application
And when it’s time to present our work, his power point is black and white and documents formatting is a mess
I got B even though my website can CRUD and whole basic function works
Playing cool with people who
- Do the same mistakes repeatedly
- Do not think through use cases and blabber out the first thing that comes to their heads
- Are always downplaying the effort others put into their work
- Do not know when to have a discussion
- Do not take responsibility for their mess
- Are rude to newbies who are trying their best
- Are mean to the minimum wage workers1
Saying that Sharepoint was coded by a bunch of trained monkeys would be an understatement and an insult to monkeys. Why is it such a bloody mess? 😡7
Can we all take a moment to appreciate what a complete mess web technologies are.
We're abusing a markup language made for scientific writing, by styling it with css and in order to make it dynamic somehow, we run a weird ass scripting language on the clientside.
Because nobody really wants to use this burning garbage can, some of us invented web frameworks.
And let's not get started on php...16
That feeling you get when you run
$ php tvVolUp.php
And the god damn tv’s volume goes up a level 😆
Now to clean the shit out of the chaotic mess I just made and make it work from a Rpi which I’ll then add to my voice activated list for my google home.
Coz you know voice activated TV remote in PHP 😍5
Every time I mess up my git branch I usually find that its pretty futile to fix it with fancy commands like 'git reset', 'git prune', 'git rebase', etc. I usually find it easier to just start over from scratch.
They should really add a command for that
My desk is as crazy as I me. It's kind of a mess but it means I'm productive. Not pictured is Tux, he's coming in the mail.
....I really like IBM hardware. 🤓10
Strating on a quite big project today because for one, it seems awesome to build it, two, i really need it and three: I don't think i have the skillset to pull this off so it's an awesome challenge/learning thing!
This will be the first time where I'll actually have to make a technical design first because otherwise it'll become a mess.
I'm both super excited and nervous 😁😅8
"There’s a subtle reason that programmers always want to throw away the code and start over. The reason is that they think the old code is a mess. […] The reason that they think the old code is a mess is because of a cardinal, fundamental law of programming: It’s harder to read code than to write it." - Joel Spolsky8
I'm a newbie when it comes to programming. The thing I like about devRant is that I'm learning how not to be "that guy" from everyone's complaints.
Here's to devRant teaching us newbs how to not make as much of a mess of things.9
teacher - gives a lecture about Java Naming Conventions...
Opens Notepad, ( he doesn't use an IDE, when I asked him he told he haven't worked on a IDE before )
and does this
public int user_account_number;
me - *wtf*
thanks God he didn't mess up with the braces and indentation otherwise I would have got eye cancer( already the white theme of notepad was causing nausea)6
1996, my colleagues trying to port Chorus microkernel on Cray supercomputer. System crashes every ~5 days with no apparent reason. After weeks of investigation someone notices one of the network cables slightly longer than others ... after ~5 days and speed of light the Cray would miss a clock tick and crashes. Replaced network cable and it works fine!
Don't mess with supercomputers ...2
Once one of my coworkers tried to prank me while i was afk and changed a line in my code.
Good old habits of mine instantly realized the file's unsaved status and i could ctrl+z without even knowing someone edited my code.
Don't mess with a developer. We know our shit.2
This is my first post but I figured I give it a shot with this week's rant tag lol.
The job was looking to bring organization to a complete mess of a development team.
I got rejected for being too organized..4
166 lines of if else hell just to decide between prod and sandbox.
Run the same query multiple times to get the same data.
And that's all written by our code review team lead.
What a mess.3
Our professor once asked us to 'mess up' the functionality of a PHP script with one shell command for fun. People tried different things like occupying the port, messing with access rights etc.
My friend just wrote a 'sed' command to replace all the underscores with an empty space...😂
It goes without saying that he stole the show.2
Here's a genuine rant for you. Probably the only one I've ever made and ever will..
It's a bit depressing and covers a few topics so just read it, it's important.
So, with the help of my friend and my Nana, I was getting VR set up. (Oh, what joy.)
Now, I love everything about VR. But the thing is, I've had this damned headset since may (Dell MMR) and I haven't been able to use it. The reason for that is, something always came up that I needed to buy and this became a huge deal.
But let's start from the beginning.. I'm curentally fighting depression. I have been for months. My only income is what my Nana gives me ($150/mo) and what my friend ocasinally gives me.
Anyways, the first issue was that I couldn't afford the headset. This was find, as my friend would get it for me, and I would pay them back the following month. But, then, once I got the headset that's when the real problems started. First it was that I needed bluetooth, so I bought an adapter. Then I realized my entire CPU was incompatable, so I had to get a new tower and I went ahead and got a new GPU as well. I also got a charging kit for my headset (This ended up making me owe my Nana money). Then after all of that was settled, I learned that the evauation software lied, and my computer doesn't have USB 3, so I need that too but low and behold; both of my graphics cards cover my second pcie slot. So my options are to either try and rig up something, or to buy a cpu and psu for my third AMD PC which I had forgotten about during this whole ordeal..
This was soposed to help me with my depression and stress. Now I don't even want to get out of bed.
With all that said, I might be getting on SSI soon (I'm sure some of you are familar with that, and no I don't want to talk about it) and when that happens I might just leave behind tech (well, my PC and games) and all the stress and pain it's caused me over my life so this was all for nothing.
Honestly.. I'm just done with everything. To all the new faces around here; Hello! How are ya? To everyone else; You know me. I've been around for a while, though I'm not popular because I lurked and commented with Alice. You all probably noticed that I left a while back, and it was because I was trying to get out of tech. My reason for tech was that I was searching for something. I was always looking for the next game to sate me, or fill this gap in my life. I became a programmer because it gave me control were I lacked it otherwise. I made friends online because my anxiety prevented me from doing so in the real world.
But to what end? What have I acomplished? My twenty second birthday is next month. I've no job, I move from family member to famly member because I'm so fixated on becoming someone else to make something of myself.
I have my own ideals, but it seems that I push them aside to try (and fail to) impress others.
It's time for change. Of course, I can't do anything without money, so I'll have to wait for my SSI which I will get news on in August.
I hope this message came through how I meant it to. There is so much I want to say, but I've no words to say them. And btw, the VR thing is just one of manny issue that i've delt with (but certanly the most expensive)
Alice, Zennoe (Alexis, whom is not on devrant); I'm not giving up tech entirely. don't expect to suddenly not hear from me. I'm mostly just giving up my computer and games. More casually so for now, and them more seriously once I get on SSI. I'll still message you every/other day like I have been. <328
my job offer reply rant from today >>>>
thanks for the offer but reading from job description your solutions look obsolete, old and complete mess to me.
I am mainly focused on modern open source, flexible technology stack and this job would not be a challenge I am looking for.
<<<< end of story2
Waking up after a drinking night and rushing to your computer to make sure you didn't mess around with your projects 😨1
This is what I get for wanting to try Arch Linux again.... I even followed a guide so that I don't mess up. 😑 Fuck you Arch Linux and your complicatedness. And fuck you too brain for being Arch Linux dumb.22
"It's just a tiny change in one function. What can go wrong? I don't need to test, I'm not that stupid to mess this up". Apparently I am. Pushed the changes, and the [Firefox] extension basically stopped working. Lost about 1.5k users in 2 days. Good times ;)2
I hunt a bug for hours. Nothing works. It's getting late. I want to go to bed, but I cannot leave it in an destroyed state like this. The whole application is a mess. Finally, I understand what's happening. Finally I find the issue. I correct the bug. Proudly I commit my fix. Git reports: +1 insertion, -1 deletion.1
:Junior> man, i saw a little bug here. lemme fix it.
:Teamlead> (*hmm, nothing wrong should happen*) well, k, try not to mess everything up
:Junior> yeah, yeah, i know
:Teamlead> *opened github* ...?8
My friend was approached by a client who insisted that his website should be in WordPress to facilitate future maintainability.
That's how y'all end up having to maintain those awful pieces of mess. Blame the client, not the developer.7
Grandpa- "so what do you do for a living.. any sports?"
Me-"no, I actually program, you know mess around with computers"
Grandpa-"oh." *looks at my father disapointed*2
soldering on a pcb is just as stressful as programming. u solder everything and u test it out and then it doesnt work like its designed to. its just like compiling it and a lot of errors are detected. the worst part of it, you cant detect the errors as soon as u try it out. you have to find where exactly in this kind of mess is the error:7
Anyone remember when PHP was a straightforward procedural language and not a pseudo-objective mess?
Peopleee of devRant!
It's been a year, I missed the date
I got to know lots of people, it has been an interesting year... certainly
To every ++er, to the people I now call my friends
I'm still a student at uni, still bad at stuff, still an embarrassing mess, it is best to not mind me hehe8
-- So you like npm? Upgrade to version 5 to use its sweet features!
OK. Let's run `npm install npm@5`. Erm, my npm is now a broken mess, not finding `semver`.
-- Well, since you like npm you also will like yarn! It's just facebook's npm. So run `npm install yarn -g`
Yeah, but I wanted `npm@5` not `yarn`.
-- Then just run `yarn global add npm@5`. You then have npm@5.
And yes, that works.5
My home setup.
I love having a huge desk.
I can fit my work setup and I still have space for some mess (and university stuff) 😁6
A coworker that is producing incredibly bad code and refuses to learn new stuff was declared "senior developer" by my boss. And me with over 20y experience? I am just a junior.. and have to clean up his mess all the time. I guess it is time to find new job.5
I make a typo in the username
"username doesn't exist"
I fix the typo and mess up the password
... I smell a potential exploit here...7
The guy across from me on the phone being loud as ever just said this "the key to using cloud software is having it organized (he means storage in a sense), otherwise you end up with a mess on your desktop"
LOL I've seen his desktop it's a mess!
I am now accept requests for people to feed into my rant generator.
For your info:
I have already made a hdf5 file for linuxxx and am finishing one for alexdelarge. I will share them soon for anyone that wants to mess around with making rants.8
On a 5 hour bus ride for which the company advertised that they have WiFi. Technically they did, it just didn't seem to be connected to anything. (it was but it was unusable). I tried logging into the router as i always do and one default "admin" password later i was in.
I didn't want to mess up anything too badly, however i did change the wpa password to "YouShouldMakeThisABitMoreSecure"5
If I hear anyone utter the words "technical debt" one more time, I swear to God, I will fucking kill them :-/
It's your fault your design smells like piss in the first place. It's your responsibility to fucking fix it. You can't just sit on your arse all day, coming up with new, "innovative" ideas that will build up more technical debt :-/ it's making the life of everyone around you, a big, irreparable mess.10
Someone reached out to me with appreciation for my comment:
// " What a mess. Why would anyone ever do this?" you ask yourself. I'm glad you asked! Long long ago in a hot fix far far away...
found this when wanting to check a notification, paused it multiple times, and my boss was: why does this keep on stopping!
Guess I better not do it again if I want to keep my job lol5
i really love coding because in C# you write string, and in Arduino String( with a capital s). You mess this up and nothing works.
10/10 would rewrite the whole program again because of this.11
Making a Twitch chat bot withing four days after starting to learn programming and python.
The downside is that now that I look a it I feel a bit embarrassed with the mess I made. But hey, it works!1
WanBLowS Vusta is more stable than this piece of shit that you call code. Yet you call yourself a programmer? Goddammit, even the shit that I dump in the toilet looks better. Because at least that thing is honest about being shit, unlike this craptacular mess that you call an application. Maybe consider kill -9 $(pidof life).3
Everyday I fell my soul being sucked by this job.
We have too much liberty and it's all scattered, every fucking project uses a different framework.
Everything is a mess, no one seems to care and I'm feeling like shit for being the only one that seems to care.
Every time I start job hunting I fell depressed because of this nonsense bullshit they call job requirements.
Just wanna run away from this mess and never look back.13
I did a small car rental application for college a couple of weeks ago and I decided to mess with images 15 minutes before I uploaded it
I got 97% for this project
I'm so sorry.....8
Dear person who extended my <T> to <Type> in the documentation:
Fuck you! Everybody knows what the T stands for! Don't mess with my stuff, don't go against my ethics and most of all, don't even dare to talk back on me unless you want me to return the favour and extand that assgole of yours with a cactus2
Fuck I wish designers learnt colour theory before presenting me with a light colour to go on a white background. Like fuck? It’s not even grey at least.
And the complimentary colours are so shit I think I’ll go throw up after an Indian dinner and colour pick from that mess instead. (I like Indian food ok...)
How hard is it to go, NOPE that’s a shit colour we probably shouldn’t use that????4
I feel JS has taken over...
Easy to learn, thus everyone knows it
Everyone knows it, so npm has disgusting code that's used in prod.
Npm itself is still an unstable mess at times.
No one knows what it is to be a good programmer .
Dozens of frameworks every year since everyone thinks they can make it a bit better.
Classes still suck , no interfaces !6
I fucked up. I forgot the password. I already knew I have a really bad memory but then pride came along and told me that I'd remember it this time. Fuck my fucking pride. I fucked up and now I've got to restore this mess.
"No matter how slow you are writing clean code, you will always be slower if you make a mess." - Uncle Bob Martin1
A fucking year and a half of project that could have been 2 months if properly planned...
But every 1 month deadline is a rush to "just do it and we plan latter when stablished"... I wait 2 weeks for things to be approved so they can be changed after I fucking implement it.
Now everything is a mess that I just introduce more mess to move on and go home by the end of the day.
Fucking hell im stupid. Why did I promise to my professor that i could make a functional web browser in 2 months...WHYYYY!! Even though i did finish the project, behind the nice interface, everything is a mess and now im here crying about it on DevRant. Hooray!!14
Installed Manjaro KDE, updated macOS, updated Windows and fixed the mess in the EFI made by those actions.
And now it’s time for screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/KviNx
(high-res imgur link)6
"here s your new server"
*Fs Layout is a mess*
*Docker is poorly supported, but supposed to be the heart of the server*
Can i go home please?
Next time I'm asked to solve the FizzBuzz problem in a interview, I think I'll write this, just to mess with the interviewers a bit:
So... I joined the Blacker black side and shit's awesome!
Anyways, just wanted to take a break from my Functional Programming study for my exam I have on Tuesday. My brain's a mess rn.8
They think I'm a NASA scientist...
Yeah I mess with some data from curiosity, but I wouldn't say I'm a NASA scientist.3
"Microsoft" just called saying they detected a virus in my computer and blablablah. Next time I will have a VM ready and try to make as much of a mess as I can.
Let's try offensive security on the scammers.2
Got a new website i should maintain... Code is a real mess... Why did some kids do something - it breaks my heart^^
The directory hasnt any seperate folder except the img-folder - css, html and js are inside the root dir...7
The Bluetooth API for Android is a fucking mess.
So is WiFi direct. Good luck doing anything with it.
That's all lol3
You see so many early access games on Steam that have been in an alpha state for years, all I can think is that the code base of these "projects" must be a f***ing mess. What else could it be.4
Say hello to my new hell,
If I see one more post about some language being shit, useless, or a complete chaotic mess 🤮
I’m going to cram this stuff down your throat and enjoy every moment off it😬
Sorry, not a great screenshot of an Ebook.2
!dev I guess
Stress and anxiety are bitches. I'm sure that mostly everyone here already knows that. Sometimes life is just a fucking mess, and no matter what you do, it just gets worse and worse.
Personally, shit's just gotten so bad lately. A bit more than a year ago life was shit and I started pulling out my hair, then I noticed I had a bald spot after about a week and I did everything I could to stop. Managed to stop, until recently. Right now I have a fair sized bald patch right on the top of my head after about a month of pulling. At least I have long hair (about chest length) so I can just put it up to cover the spot.
This community has been the thing keeping me sane lately and I just wanted to thank you guys for just doing what you do. I'm a fucking mess and just need an outlet11
Not work but
Years ago when i was in middle school i wanted to mess with the school computers a bit so i made a desktop shortcut for shutdown and changed the name and icon to google chrome.
The person in charge of the it department freaked out and thought some kind of a massive virus infected everything.
Long story short turns out they had an event logger installed, figured out it was me and what i did...
I nearly got expelled 😑2
I sometimes feel Windows keeps on pushing useless updates, just to mess with the users. Change a single line of code (or rather just add a comment) and push the entire module as new.
How can it be everytime I boot on my windows device, it has an update.
EVERY. SINGLE. FUCKING. TIME.
Same goes for you steam.2
Trying to pick through a recently ex-coworkers project repository... these forking commits!
Favorite might be "That was gonna mess up". So why did you commit it?
At first I was mad, but by the bottom two I was dying laughing.
I'll save you from typing out the link:
I was added to a private Trello board today, of a company that I’m not a part of.
I don’t know if I should mess around with their boards and move stuff around, just leave the board, or better yet, relieve devs of their assigned tasks.
Procrastination is weird... Their were a piece of code I wasn't looking forward to work on, so I started cleaning my apartment instead, putting some order in my files, and even tidy up my desk, which I didn't do for months 😐
And it finally took me 10min to actually write the code 😆
It's annoying, but I can't be the only one 🤔
At least I can enjoy a clean setup... Until it become a mess again...7
Okay, so I have to write a script that will get user data from an AD, additional information from an XML, combine those two to get boss user relationship and output that mess into an excel sheet.
Oh, and both sources are ofc completely inconsistent. So I need full error handling on everything.
Aaaaaaand I have to write it in VB script... Using np++... Without plugins...
I hate my life!8
It's Sunday. A day for prayer. Today I am praying that others dont mess up the code base when I get to work on Monday. Amen.2
Anything that's written in Java at my current company.
It's a mess, inefficient and appears to be written by monkeys...
And somehow the ppl that wrote this stuff were senior developers....3
So I have to work with this company at work, they claim to be super professional and they have some API stuff that a customer of us is dependant of.
Their API is a huge pile of bullshit and a big mixture of German / English terms and stuff, it's a mess to work with it.
Look at (the source code of) their website to see what I mean:
Today I explained to my wife why my night stand is a mess, and hers is clean and ordered by using the backend/frontend metaphor.
I am the backend, handling bills, bank accounts, taxes, warranties and all the paperwork.
She is my frontend, handling my social interactions.
Now she hates me, but she admitted I'm right.
She still want me to clean my night stand though.4
Learned Lua for an hour, I think its a fun language to mess around, but i’m still figuring out what i’m going to use it for...12
So in C++ there is no garbage collector to clean up the mess u leave behind?
And now i feel like a garbage collector.... always cleaning up after monkeys... :(14
Secretly installed Automate app on my friend's Android phone to mess with him. (For those who don't know, with Automate you can automate anything on an Android device).
Made a 'flow' that would read his incoming sms's, and send an email to me with his exact location if I sent him an SMS saying 'where are you?'.
Was funny to mess with him and tell him his exact location even though we were miles apart.
Cleared it up for him a while later but it made me feel like #hackerman8
So I took my old C# project "RotatingCube" for a spin and transformed the unreadable and inefficient mess into a different program, featuring better readability and more comments, with multiple cubes at once, without the shitty flickering.
I did that for school but it was quite fun to tinker with only outputting the differences to a previous output.
Check it out at https://github.com/filthycoding/...!
Next I just need multithreading for performance reasons.
Started a new job a month ago. I’m the only real frontend developer here. I come from a company with 10+. Now i’m working with a old ux guy. Mr. UX teached me the usage of a styleguide. This styleguide is a fucking mess. The legacy code is a fucking mess. They way of working, up for improvement.
I have a dream...4
We use Trello for project management - I checked my assignment board and I was asked to remove custom pagination (formerly sorted by year) from a site. So I spent 2 hours making new pagination and styling, and then the project manager comes downstairs and tells me the f*cking client just wants a mess of all their unsorted content to print onto the page, regardless of performance 😂😭6
Put all Code into one Controller and the middlewares are a mess.
Who did it? Yeah, me.
But who fixed it? Also me.6
When initially you are told to just quickly create a POC,
So you do without creating a proper architecture, then they tell you to add these new features for the time being, then they keep adding random more new features and eventually your code becomesa complete mess :|2
In our databases lesson, we are going to use Microsoft SQL Server throughout the year.
This shit's setup fails at random, doesn't even start (empty error box??????) on some machines, and when it, uh, works, kinda, it's a convoluted mess.
Anxiety and depression came back today.
I have so many feelings I can't express to anyone.
I have so many thoughts and ideas I can't talk to anybody about.
Friends never invite me anywhere.
Sometimes I think about ending it all.
It's been like this for the past 5 years or so.
Isn't life just great sometimes? 🙃9
Despite common sense, I think technology is not making our lives easier. It's just build chaos on top of chaos.
Take server-side programming for instance.
First you have to find someone to host your thing, or a PaaS provider. Then you have to figure out how much RAM and storage you need, which OS you're going to use. And then there's Docker (which will run on top of a VM on AWS or GCP anyway, making even less sense). And then there's the server technology: nginx, Apache (and many many more; if, that is, you're using a server at all). And then there are firewalls, proxies, SSL. And then you go back to the start, because you have to check if your hosting provider will support the OS or Docker or your server. (I smell infinite recursion here.)
Each of these moving parts come with their own can of worms in terms of configuration and security. A whole bible to read if you want to have the slightest clue about what you're doing.
And then there's the programming language to use and its accompanying frameworks. Can they replace the server technology? Should you? Will they conflict with each other and open yet another backdoor into your system? Is it supported by your hosting provider? (Did I mention an infinite recursion somewhere?)
And then there's the database. Does it have a port to the language/framework of your choosing? Why does it expose an web interface? Is it supposed to replace your server? And why are its security features optional again? (Just so I have to test both the insecure and the secure environments?)
And you haven't written a single line of code yet, mind you.4
800+ lines of js, implementing business logic from an excel spreadsheet. All variables named as the excel cells, e.g "B32 = G11 * Min(A12, A13)" and so on, all grouped in a few giant functions.
PM told me to modify some of the logic, ended up rewriting the whole thing. At least the next person working on it won't have to deal with this mess...1
Don't hire monkeys that write shitty code that cause production issues.
Just spent the entire morning with our global team (10+ ppl) looking into the cause of a production issue.
Root cause: shitty code that anyone that has read an algorithm book (array resizing costs) and understanding how DB functions should be used and why (bulk inserts vs one at a time) would never write.
Even the code itself is a mess...8
Can someone please forgive me for this mess?
Atleast its a fast mess.
(btw: I have no idea wether it works. I hope it does)4
Freaking love it when devs from other teams work on you code base and implement components you already have ... Don't talk to each other, just submit your awsome code and leave a mess behind. But OK ... Just a simple click on Pull Request -> Denied!1
the kitchen is a lot more fun to sit and program in than my cluttered mess of a room.
in other tangential news,
i've got orientation at McDonalds! no longer jobless!!!1
My first Alienware PC. Aurora R7. Feeling amazing. New to pc games. Hoping to get Forza. I have a Ps4 and a xbox one too. But I like to get into PC gaming. Please excuse the cable mess. Still working on it.20
Another thing that my dev friend told/send me the code to look at: the build&deploy system of one of their clients.
It's comprised of:
- 12 regular shell scripts
- 3 BASH only scripts
- 5 ZSH only scripts (required because of floating point computations, the other *shell scrpts use inline python for computations)
-> Most of these contain inline python 2 & 3
- 9 python 2.7 scripts
- 15 python 3 scripts
- 7 perl scripts
- 14 custom executables, written in c and c++, compiled every time this mess runs
- 6 jar files
- 4 nodejs apps
All of these are used to deploy a single product.
They have to be run in a specific order manually.
And you have to install some dependencies manually(like zsh)
I definetly don't want to work at that client of his.
My friend (I'm helping him) is trying to automate and rework this horrible mess.8
Honestly I love PHPStorm. It makes my life so much easier and takes care of a lot of the mundane tasks and boilerplate I can't be bothered with, allowing me to get on with making a right old mess of the code 😊.3
It seems that every Pi day, I end up with a new Raspberry Pi that I got sometime before it. First, a 1, then a 2+3, now I have a Zero as well. Next year, I'll have a cluster of 3s. No reason, just want to mess with it.1
Friend of mine had a perfect day today:
It's 3am, you're coding hard, can't even see properly, but you know only a two or three proper lines and you are finished. A few minutes later you set your pc to hibernate because you can't go further and go to sleep.
In the morning/noon you log in, see only a mess. Half of the new variables are probably obfuscated or in some alien language because you can't read that shit and a cherry on the top - 1/4 of a _big_ test suite reports errors. What a lovely day.
I just cleaned my emails. Made a rule for everything.
Jira, crashlytics, git, annoying twats, spam...
My main inbox is now only made of emails from actual people. If you want to reference emails from automated sources, you can go fuck yourself
It turned out that I had 4000 emails, only of which 340 are relevant!
Just wanted to share how happy I am now that I cleaned this mess up :)2
Learned an important lesson today- Never be sentimental towards your code.
The only thing common in all clients is the habit of changing their requirements, how sure they are about the unsurity of what they want. And if you are sentimental towards the code you write, about a difficult algorithm you implemented you will be in a mess1
IBM Notes. Ultimate example of developers each working on their own bits of functionality with zero thought to how the whole thing fits together. Just need to look at the preferences page see what a mess it is.
! Worst thing another dev did in our NodeJS code.
1. No indentation. Literally.
2. A single function in a module worth 1000 lines. I'm not even kidding. No breaking into smaller functions. Just a large rock with a lot of js mess scribbled.
3. No comments at all
4. Sending stray values to promises which were not required at all.
5. No jsdoc. Using camelCase and uppercase interchangeably.3
Whenever Python 4 eventually comes out, I hope it doesn't break too much. Otherwise, based on the current trends, we'll end up with Python 2 vs 3 vs 4 arguments, battles, and books, and THAT would be a fun mess to deal with... :\
work with npm, node and angular is a totally mess, random errors every few minutes, you need to be lucky to find the right alignment of planets to make things works...cannot wait to go back to .net and vs8
Cookies... They are a mess. (To roughly translate what happened here) the text states: you diss-alowed cookies but to view our video you must accept them. (So far so good) If you want to watch the video, you can do that if you allow them. (Still good) to do this, remove your cookies (wait wat) and hit refresh. So... I did not allow cookies, and you set a cookie to not set cookies????2
When you mess up the repo, the bestfriend to help out is named "stash".
Personal record: 9 times stash in a row with no commits.
Comment to share your personal records...4
There's no winning.
Went to node.js for a year:
Types you heathens, types! Oh what the fuck is this mess? Geezuz, I guess that works but it's kinda gross...
Now I'm back to C#:
You fucking window-lickers, it's concurrency not parallelism! This shit isn't hard, just stop spinning up threads for database calls. Oh sweet shit even the Microsoft documentation is confused fuck this...4
At the moment I'm working on a project where every line of code is actually garbage. However, the client insists on continuing to use ZF1.
Zend_Locale is a mess. I've been sitting on it for five hours and nothing's working.9
Last year i had to resolve a really annoying bug, and figuring out how to fix that was a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS.
Now i have to make some adjustment to that fix, and the only comment on that piece of code is: "this is a huge mess, good luck if you need to modify something".
FUCK YOU MYSELF FROM THE PAST3
It is such a mess to maintain and work with and I never had any propensity or interest towards web development.. especially JS10
Well, I always say that if you going to make things a mess, do it a spectacular way. Today I kicked off a data import job that went bad, and in the process of canceling said job, I canceled myself, and the job went rogue, and became a zombie and ate ALL the system memory, bringing the server to a deathly crawl and throwing a dozen developers temporarily out of work for about an hour, before I was finally able to kill the zombie, and balance was restored to the Universe.
In two weeks of christmas holidays my brain had enough time to fire the guy that was in charge of my sleep pattern and to hire a new guy with less experience that is really trying hard to fix the mess that has been left for him.
Went to bed at 5am...
Woke up at 9am...
I'm getting there!4
Chased a bug for nearly a week. Huge code base, over 2mn lines consisting of a mess of C++, Python and Lua glued together.. Wrote a very complex distributed computational framework. End up with a elusive compiler bug in GCC.. FML
Fuck you negative bastard! I really hate when someone "predicts" failure to meet the deadline of some project we haven't started yet. This bastard thinks we will fail only because he is a complete mess at coding and fears learning new things.5
When you get bored and you want to mess around with image generation and facial recognition, so you make a deep fried meme generator.
Send the dev a request for a design before they do a delicate process. They send back some mess done in MSPaint and a ton of select statements, with no context or explanation.
Send back an example of what they need to work through. Get back a response saying that the previous spec was just a draft, and once they complete development they’ll complete the design.
Why would I want a design once it was too late? What would be the point?
So far? Probably Chelsea FC's raffle system which I inherited after a dev left and left it in a right fucking mess.2
Uninstalling Visual Studio is a mess. It'll leave behind hundreds of silly component, which is funny because the main reason I started the process was to clean up a possibly corrupt installation. It also left behind a Docker tool component, which I can't uninstall cause that installer needs VS itself :D1
Angular 2+, it's just so elaborate, and over the top complicated. On larger projects it easily becomes a mess. I started a new job where I inherited a angular 2+ project, that is terribly made, it's so frustrating. I now use Vue.js 2, and it's just so beautiful, especially single file components :D1
You know when you have a project and everything is fine. Then everything turns into this big mess that you have no idea what does. And then you don't even know how to continue on the project so you decide to just start from scratch after working on it for a year?
Well that happened today.4
This is inspired from another rant I just commented on.
Would you rather build something that was technically pristine and something other coders would salivate over, but no-one used it
build a hacky mess that was shit technically but became a “hit” with users.11
One time I had to review some SAP / Excel / Visual Basic toolchain.
It was a huge mess with like 10 layers of if-then cases in around 1000 lines of code analyzing excel sheets, resolving error codes etc. in maybe two functions.
It turned out that I programmed that code about 8 years ago :/
90% of my time at work is spent debugging and fixing a horrible mess of years-old legacy spaghetti. The only "real" coding I do is my personal hobby projects at home.3
Has anyone here used MongoDB for relational databases? I am trying to use MySQL with Node but I feel like the whole thing is a mess. There are some ORMs like Knex or Sequelize for MySQL but they are pretty crap. I am thinking if I should just move onto MongoDB instead of MySQL, at the same time I feel a little dirty to store relational data in a document store :(18
Need to work on a web application from 2002... the code is a mess. Whats the oldest code you worked on?5
Yanno, when I pay $60 for a theme, I get what I get. That's fine. Invariably I end up having to mess with the css. That's fine too.
However, theme makers? Please don't mix hyphens and underscores in your selectors. Decide on a case style. Avoid div-itus.
And for the love of all a selector such as #Top_bar .logo #logo a.logo makes code a pain in the ass to test5
Me: Who wrote this fu$$in mess of code? Never mind, we will get the dirty hacker.
*Runs git blame*
Me: What a innovative way to solve the problem! I'm a genius!
Modular C is a mess to get to work. It looks really great but it takes sooo looong to make it work...
How do people deal with it?1
My turn to post my desk setup!
I know it's a mess :D
Also, phone for some reason despises making pictures...11
One of my colleague keeped his docking station's cables in a big mess. So I pulled out the mouse and inserted another cable from a hidden mouse.
It promised full-blown CRDT functionality. So I decided to adopt it.
Disappointment number one: you have to use CouchDB, so your data model is under strict regulations now. Okay.
Disappointment number two: absolutely messed up hack required to restrict users from accessing other users’ data, otherwise you have to store all the user data in single collection. Not the most performant solution.
Disappointment number three: pagination is utter mess. Server-side timestamps are utter mess. ANY server-side logic is utter mess.
Just to set it to work, you need PouchDB itself, websocket adapter (otherwise only three simultaneous syncs), auth adapter (doesn’t work via sockets), which came out fucking large pile of bullshit at the frontend.
Disappointment number four, the final one: auth somehow works but it doesn’t set cookie. I don’t know how to get access.
GitHub user named Wohali, number one CouchDB specialist over there, doesn’t know that either.
It also doesn’t work at Incognito mode, doesn’t work at Firefox at all.
So, if you want to use PouchDB, bear that in mind:
1. CouchDB only
2. No server-side logic
3. Authorization is a mess
4. Error logs are mess too: “ERROR 83929629 broken pipe” means “out of disk space” in Erlang, the CouchDB language.
5. No hosting solutions. No backup solutions, no infrastructure around that at all. You are tied to bare metal VPS and Ansible.
6. Huge pile of bullshit at frontend. Doesn’t work at Incognito mode, doesn’t work at Firefox.8
Working on something else. If I lose motivation in schooling or work, I go play with one of my cars or mess with an old small engine. When I realize I need money to restore the 48 year old car, I go back to playing with servers.
If I don't want to do anything I just read a book and/or listen to some music. Usually some metal, or rock, or bluegrass, or whatever else I feel like at the moment.
You can really tell a lot about a coder from their build log. Especially the actual compile error reasons.
Yes, I'm talking about you who duct-tapes solutions for others to clean your mess up later when your hack falls apart , you dirty ba****d!
That emotional rollercoaster when you refactor a huge mess and finally there are no more compile errors in it. But there are still endless broken tests to fix :(
When you open someone else's "server" and it's one massive unholy mess where entering a new line freezes the whole thing for 3 full seconds...
I love working as one-man army in multiple projects. Just love.
I got sick, stayed in bed for a week and now, after getting back to work, everything went to shit. And there's no one but me to fix the whole mess.
As a developer I don't have to mess with css very often but when I do and have to fix something for IE the element disappears in ever other browser.... Fml2
I'm currently an iOS developer and i have to learn .NET for work. It's a fucking mess of an environment. Everything I try to learn seems to be outdated. smh7
Yay, after two weeks, my books are finally here,
Fuck the customs though, they always mess up the package, the small one got some pages crimped, the large one got dented corner,
But all in all, it’s a good purchase
A while ago at the electronics store...
That touchscreen should give customers the opportunity to review their products, but instead you were able to mess with their network and system 😁
Of course i did not harm them.
Btw. it says Linux in the lower left corner :o
I cleaned up my desk and decluttered everything to freshen things up.
It's much nicer to have a clean desk especially when a desk is the only 'office' in your business.
It's not perfect, but it's much better than before :)
PS: I wouldn't dare to share the mess it was and burn it through your eyes... It'd be a sin.6
Little question - lately I've been thinking about getting a raspberry pi, but is it like really useful? Because it seems like a lot of fun to mess with but I'm scared that after a few months it would begin gathering dust 🤔8
Fuck ES/TS 😐
Been trying for hours now to get ionic 2 to work with either generators or async functions. Doesn't work because async for ES 5 is only supported with TS 2.1 which breaks the angular compiler. Also can't use generators (not supported for es5 at all by TS).
Also can't really change the ionic build process to just take es6 output instead of es5 and transpile because it's a convoluted mess in a separate node module instead of just a gulp file like with ionic 1.x.
Why is the JS ecosystem such a fucking mess?3
Using the new project as an excuse to try out the language I was an absolute newbie at. (Python, at the time).
A couple years later when I’m much more proficient and I go back and look at that code, I want to slap past me for putting that spaghetti mess into production.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP OVERUSING STYLES.XML IN ANDROID.
It is NOT A GOOD IDEA to create a new style for each and every layout and then RANDOMLY reuse those styles in RANDOM places.
Grep is working around the clock to solve this fucking hot mess you've made.
I once worked at a really messy project that is best described as one gigant big bug. The CEO asked me how long it would take to fix it. At that point nobody knew since the code was a mess and new directives came all the time. So I answered that I sincerely didn't know. He responded angered with "How couldn't you know. When I read a book I know exactly how long it takes."... I quit4
If you mess up your fstab and you forgot a nofail option somewhere, then all tries for recovery fail, you'll never forget to set this fucking option ever again...2
Colleague (Lead Engineer): Hey, check my code. I'm trying to group a list of Request objects by their id. Something is not working here
Me: * saw his code, had a lot of shitty loops, called all for a quick meet, changed his shitty mess to one liner
Walked out like a boss*
So it's 2018, I thought let's start working with Android Studio on Ubuntu. [Due to some guy who posted his CPU usage on a very heated rant of same issue]
I realized it's fucking mess(/shit) and you dare not keep any browser open in back/fore-ground. Now, my entire system is stuck.
Ruined the first day man.
At the beginning of a project, everybody has lots of good intentions- call them "new project resolutions." ... Once the project gets underway, though, these good intentions are abandoned, one at a time. When the project is finally delivered, the code looks like a mess, and nobody seems to know how it came to be that way.
Attending in a local game jam with some friends.
One of the team members wrote the worst code I've ever seen. After him realizing that it's buggy as hell he left to sleep having me fixing his mess at 4 am to somehow get something done by the end of the event.
It resulted in me rewriting nearly everything he had done.
Guess which team didn't manage to have something playable in the end...1
Don't you just love that moment when you see shit,
In a bow.
Through the air.
And actually just starting, just starting, to hit the fan.
Three days before your deadline.
And it is crystal clear the project is gonna end up as a mess.
But the best thing of all: it's not your fault.
So, you are actually celebrating the mess to come a little, and know that you can blame the guy who isn't trusting you as a new guy, and show him, with all his more years experience, he is the one who can't be trusted.1
Been reading about this mess called C# 8.... WHY THE FUCKING HELL DO YOU THINK ALLOWING FUCKING INTERFACES TO HAVE DEFAULT METHOD IMPLEMENTATIONS IS A FUCKING GOOD IDEA?
Just Can't wrap my head around this stupid idea... Help me out here fellas...5
I have a confession: I produced a shit ton of wacky code...
The business guy in my team is super fucking bitchy about deploying to prod, while my codebase is a total mess. I could refactor it to use a much cleaner module, but I had to do it because we're running out of time. I spent half a day trying to refactor while failing miserably.
//FIXME: I will come back... or not.1
@localhost had to do it... Just got some new monitor stands for free from a "neighbour" company, yesterday it was a mess... xD5
I have some friends who finished undergrad together and they are working on side jobs at the moment. From my experience with them, they wrote shit code and their deployment methods were a mess. I remember everytime I pointed out something wrong and tried to fix it, all they said was "it works" and they seemed proud and didn't bother to fix anything. Plus they didn't even know how to use git properly and they didn't merge my code that actually fixed the problems before submitting the project because they didn't know how to use git merge. Fuck them. I'm so glad I no longer have to work with them. It's a shame that they're working on projects for small to medium sized companies (that can't afford someone to actually review their work) writing shit code with bad practices because some day, somebody has to clean up that mess when shit goes down.. Dumb proud programmers..fuck1
Tried looking at some React code. Made my head spin. Who organized this mess? Heard a fit, scarf-wearing hipster in my head saying, "It's actually really simple," and then said ghost sipped some hot coffee.
Noping out right now in Python and Java, my happy places.2
It's going to be a tough week at home. We'd have to leave our house and find new accommodation. And I just find solace in the fact that, at least, I'm a developer and when all the dust is settled, I can earn enough to get out of this mess.
Special thanks to my best friend who supported me as I spent my college time trying to build my development skills!1
All this small node modules in the npm repository that is a fork of another with a name that sounds almost like the other. It's a jungle. Then things are abandoned or changing name. How much i like coding nodejs based projects I really feel bad of the total mess with that repo. Freedom and a lot of projects are good. But the mess is like the flat of a young student that hasn't been cleaned in a year.
Was watching a video on how to draw some stuff while travelling in a public transport.
And on every jerk during the video I was afraid that he was going to mess up the drawing.2
When you are wasting your time trying to make sense of 15000 different approaches for the same task...
and all those github repos are 3 years old with missing steps in the examples...
and official doc is such a mess that only a Time Lord could have the time to filter it...1
We were building a website using angular 1. We were collaborating with some devs from outside our firm. At some point one of the devs(which was supposed to be a front end expert) had the brilliant idea to migrate to a never version of angular. He made the changes and fucked up all the controllers and functionalities and then he just disappeared. My team worked for 2 weeks to fix his mess.
Dude do you even know the definition of refactoring? 😤4
There's like one guy in the office who actually knows anything about the software we sell. It's a mess of bolted together chunks of code from different client projects (that the clients have paid for and continue to pay a license fee for) we just cherry pick the best bits and repackage it for the next release.3
The 'developer' has been hold on for now to give support on his crappy code and my next few months are filled with working in this mess without cleaning up the technical debt because we don't have enough time for that... FML1
Today I think it became apparent why we have so many data and prod issues...
No one understands SOLID design principals... Particularly Separation of Concern. No wonder all the Spring (DI) modules look like a mess of God functions that are impossible to reuse and difficult to extend...3
Exception-driven development. I don't even know if it's an actual thing, but it's seriously a mess to work with.
If you passed wrong arguments to the application, an exception was thrown.
If some kind of error occurred, an exception was thrown.
AND: If an exception was thrown from a third-party library, that exception was just ignored and replaced with another bullshit exception which made no sense at all.
TLDR: Never make an application based on exceptions.4
Does anyone know how i can get rid of the rounded window corners?
using elementaryOS with no theme, though i plan to either add Flatabulous or Arc as a theme.
I want sharp corners, not this baby-proofed round mess i currently have going on 😂1
Not a specific bug, but I always have that satisfactory feeling when I fix a bug inside a code like this:
1. Spaghetti af
2. Duplicated af
3. Heavy use of static fields instead of passing via callback when required
4. variable names like: textbox1 ..etc.
5. No comments
It is true that is a huge pain in the ass to deal with, but then I look at it as I was able to create something out of that mess, I mean all is mixed up nothing is clear, no clue where it starts and what caused it, but then I put the pieces together and end up with a solution of what I thought to be: It will never be solved when that mess is here.
Not an excuse for messed up code, I try fixing whenever possible, but hey, at least I did not run away and give up
Finally got some time today to cleanup my inbox after three weeks of almost non-stop emergency. Came home from work, sat down in front of my computer and got a call from unknown number. Answered it and it was my ISP telling me that I have virus in my network and was spamming everybody and they cut off my internet. I know they are pretty useless and only kinda semi-IT literate. Took me an hour to convince them restore my connection with blocked port 25. Suricata log of all my traffic shows that nothing in my network communicated to port 25, the only possibilities are managed switch in front of my router I didn't managed to get into yet which should have managing interface on completely different VLAN and their router. Or mess in their system. My guess is their system is a mess. Will see how it works out tommorrow.
Is 'long term thinking' a forbidden thing??
I: if we use Chef to deploy our project to the different servers, we can save a lot of time and hassle (also for the server people)
They: Do we need it now, because it takes a lot of time..
Yes, it takes some more time initially but it pays back in the long run especially because now we have a terrible mess of server environments..3
That feeling when you are about to add a new feature to a project and when you start reading the spaghetti mess the previous developer puked when he/she was monkeying around, your blood pressure goes up, you lose a bit more hope in humanity, you start thinking about buying a gun, and start theorizing how torture could potentially be a valid recourse in some cases.3
Do something physical where I can see the result.
Paint that bookshelf that I would do one day. Organize the big pile of mess in the storage, plant something in the garden. Something where you are reminded when you see it: ohh I fixed that and feel proud.
Organize ones and zeroes are sometimes a bit abstract for the primitive brain to give that fulfillment feeling.1
Got a phone call from a scammer claiming to be my Cell Phone Provider saying “Congratulations! You just recieved unlimited calls and messages for a year, now to win this please give the 4 digit pins given to you” then I recieved a 4 digit pin and warning label not to give this message to anyone else. I then noticed that this was a scammer, i got his probably fake number and I tried to mess with him by giving random codes, he then noticed that the numbers were fake in the 5 try.
I truly feel bad for this idiot and just call him a scammer and end the call...1
Ordered to implement Old functionality in New system, not allowed to fix it, refactor or change the underlaying mess.
Wrap old system in a wcf, hardcoded some values, done.
3 weeks estimated so I feel ahead and got more time to look for a New job.
After a month of loving git, I finally got into an irreversible git mess yesterday. Spent all night rewriting last two days of code. I feel like a real programmer 😋
Seriously though, I'm gonna take backups a lot more frequently now onwards.2
Oracle database with PL/SQL, heavy use of triggers, and viewception.
Sure, let's take what's supposed to be a data store, embed shitloads of logic in it, make sure everything has side effects, and ensure nothing is ever straightforward.
Untracable, impossible to debug and overall a mess of epic proportions!2
My most challenging task during development is choosing variable names.
I make a mess during this process.5
Anyone have a Sacred Code regarding unattended computers at work? We love pranks in my office, but we also have a strictly adhered to code if someone needs to leave their PC unlocked to run a script or something. I've threatened to murder people who tried to mess with people's PCs who were running things. The Code is very important.5
btw boobies because hair color and because sometimes I speak about myself in feminine gender just to mess with people (and because mentally I am probably a woman even tho physically I look like a man - shit happens)7
Contemplating buying a domain for 1€/year for my personal projects.
I don't even need it really. I'd just mess around with it and attach it to a random vps or something, just for fun.
My hands are itching. Please stop me!7
I hate when a developer doesn't know how to use git. He never asks for advice or help until has pushes his changes up and creates a mess out of the main branch instead of creating his own feature branch. I mean there is no problem if you don't know how to use git, but you have a real problem if you say you know how to use it just to "look normal and experienced" and in reality you just don't know how to do stuff there. Just ask for help... and then if you create a mess out of git... Well, solve it and learn.2
Web development is a fucking mess. Why is there hundreds of things to download, manage, and all of them depend on another tool? Framework dev teams, can you stop creating dev tools for dev tools that is intended to alter development? How the fuck do people even handle this pile of mess? They must be superhumans.1
My biggest and favorite distraction...
My queen, my servant... My girlfriend
Have so much support from her. Without her, i would be a mess
Apple fucked me, their latest iOS version broke my app 🙄 10.1.2
Then my phone gap plugins decided to update to .. they also don't work 🙄
Absolute mess only way I knew was rolling code back to a version that once worked... Thanks github!3
My current strategy is to stick it onto/into a site and mess around with it.
God bless AWS and the ability to hot swap instances if I fuck one up badly enough!
unexperienced me just wanted to mess around with vba updating a docvariable in word, now i am fiddling around how to export several values to an external excel-sheet.
that escalated quickly
I've steered clear from react cause I thought it was complicated to learn... but it turns out it was simpler than expected. The dev environment is a mess though...
Hell yeah React!
What a mess ^^
From one moment to another unit-tests on my local machine stopped working.
There was a PHP fatal error, because of insufficient memory.
Actually, there was a ducking "unit"-test of a controller action "log".
This action returns the content of the projects log file...
Since this log file grew over the time, PHP tried to assert the response of the controller action which was sized about 400MB.
What were your thoughts behind this bullshit? ^^
Recoding the malloc is a mess. It seems to be a very good exercise and it is. But you know there are so much mystical issues that happens when you're working with memory.
I just figured out that I got 90% of my free function calls by the "ls" command that was in reality a bad pointer following my own verifications.
So, I don't know why because I just make a normal vérification so except if the "ls" was developer with the ass...
My Bros housemates make a mess but don't clean up and generally don't get along. What can he do? Too expensive to live by himself (California)
They're new grads, met somewhere, dunno the details, and decided to rent together earlier this year. He doesn't seem to be very social and just games in his free time...2
At my new internship I am have to work in Magento. I come to FUCKING hate it.
From the phtml files, the choice between caching or having to wait 20 fucking seconds for a page reload to the huge file structure and the "documentation".
The whole fucking thing is a mess with a shit load of bugs and confusing git tickets that never seem to be added as updates!!!
Fucking hate this shit
!rant but sometime you need to share some positive vibes.
Found out I could get $50 credit for digital ocean from github because I am a student.
So now I can learn a lot for free, and if I mess something up I can just create a new machine.
So now I am first learning how to work with docker and the communication between containers.
Good to see people want to encourage devs :)2
language confusion is a mess. as a python newbie i am very focused on learning for the last two weeks. now i am not even able to declare my php-variables properly and end up getting errors the whole evening.1
mess around inside bootstrap.css project at work, make a push, sit back with my popcorn n watch the world burn2
Playing "de boerderij van Piet Precies" on an old windows 98 machine of my parents. It's a game for little children about this farmer, "piet precies", who is quite a perfectionist and has everyting on his farm go in orderly fashion, but one day his animals start to "revolt" or something, and make a big mess (a cow in his bedroom for example).
Yup, late 90's kid ☺
This friend of mine accidentally deleted client data in their production database, DBAs gotta work paid overtime to fix the mess...at least he only got away with a written warning. Dude coulda been fired on the spot
Codeigniter (a PHP framework). Every time I stumble upon a CI project, it's always a mess, since they don't have that good of a documentation like Laravel.2
There was a big concert event after work last night I couldn't go.
Noone is at work but me today....
and there is a ton of empty bottles in the cantina as well as quite some mess in a meeting room.
And noone has said they were taking the day off. oh well I'm going early then.2
Well... Ehm, wow. It's Maintenence Weekend... and I really don't know what to say...
It's simply a prick.
The service hooks at Visual Studio Team Service are a mess. A new subscription for every single event. Really?
Is it that hard to add an "everything" field? Instead I can now add 25 events one by one - for every project.
My first game jam,
I was first excited about coding but when I started, I was caring about making my code clean, and I lost too much time focusing on this... You should see the end, such a mess ! Spaghetti code, pointers everywhere but hey, it worked 😊
Sometimes i feel really messy in my code and unorganized.
after a while i regret what i did and in order to fix this mess i re write the class all over again or i end in an endless errors which is time consuming.
So what's the best way to write a clean code in your opinion other than commenting and identation1
On my first job I was assigned to an Angular 1 project that nobody was working on anymore. After two weeks of pestering the people that worked on it I finally figured out that mess of a code and started fixing bugs. It sucked working alone but I escaped eventually...
What a buggy mess suse 42.2 leap, since i started to use it, my love for mint is getting bigger and bigger2
I have zero knowledge with Android development. I started to mess around with react Native these days. And so much time on configuring the environment of everything... Emulator, SDK, ADV... Still doesn't work... Spending hours and days waiting for a miracle. And then the emulator launched. Thanks God.7
!Rant - It's kinda satisfying to contract at a company which you turned down when offered a perm position a few years ago and find out you right about the nagging feeling it was a bit of a mess :)
I'm quite sure my coworker made a total mess, problem is the code looks reasonable at a quick glance. And it works for some unexplicable reason. No time to fix it.
Just replaced a mess of a 6 row, 6 column grid done using bootstrap with 4 lines of CSS3 grid layout (shorthand).
Why do we even need full Bootstrap when ya got Grid and flexbox now? Oh right, .btn colours... 😖😫😭3
Today the DBA-team (needed to keep our Oracle mess running) decided to change datatypes in tables that has been in production for 20 years. Without a headsup.
Just took us 5 hours to debug good ol' visual basic code......
Why would you do such a thing!?
Found bug in legacy code with comment "4 days to release workaround, works predictably".
Added "No, it doesn't!" and committed to main branch before I start reworking the entire spaghetti mess of a codebase
Lets see If I can mess up the character cutoff limit 😜4
I have no face. If i choose a face, can i go back to having no face? I've made it this far and as others have agreed, a regular ol plumbus doesn't have a face. So i don't want to be stuck with a face. I really want to just mess with the color of my facelessness.2
Tried (and still trying) to do an LFS build. I already worked with Ubuntu, Debian, and Arch, but somehow a successful build eludes me. Each time I follow the book as closely and possible, but each time I got different issues. I've had to format the partition I'm working on at least 20 times now. Its fun, but I have no idea how I manage to mess up in so many ways.
When a customer decides they want half of what you delivered last time and half of something new to be used at the same time.
Ah, I think that'll take us a year to make that mess work!!
Makes me want to scream!!!
(all comes about because they're not happy with the original thing - does exactly what it needs to do to specification)
Gaaah packaging for macOS is a pain. RPATH doesn't work as expected so I have to patch shared libs... So I just macdeployqt, but that needs a .app, so then I use CPack to generate a .app (which needs patching), which ALSO put it in a .dmg, so I have to mount that and fetch the .app to use this mess!
Or: Build > Use CPack to package it into a .app and put it into a .dmg > mount the .dmg > copy the .app out of the mounted dmg > unmount the .dmg > symlink executables in the .app > run macdeployqt on the .app
I'm pretty sure we don't need to use brackets and semicolons anymore. Newer versions of gcc bitch when you mess up tabs, which shouldn't matter in C/C++ because of brackets/semicolons, so why require the tabs and newlines?
On the flipside, if we're requiring tabulation and newlines nowadays, why use brackets and semicolons? Just Python it up and you won't have issues where you mess up and add/omit a semicolon/bracket and break EVERYTHING!
"It's so you can write it all on one line"
I have yet to meet anyone that masochistic.6
I built a postman collection with all our company REST calls and sent it over to my IT colleagues to make our lives easier. A week later my boss told us we are not allowed to use apps like postman or paw because it breaks our server. Only curl calls from terminal are allowed, it's a fucking mess. FML12
Today was a good day, finnished the assignment although it was a mess (but now it is not, thank god). Now just record and send in the assignment, so kids. Just do your assignment in due time, not 48 hours before deadline
Finally got my multi-page dialog with stepper to have validation on every field based on a schema in a way that doesn’t totally mess up styling and that still collects information from fields from both pages to send the Graphql mutation.
So happy I could cry.
Worst fear while adding a snippet of code from the net to my project :
I hope this doesn't mess up other UI elements.1
It's 3AM and here I am trying to fix the mess that I made last night when I was drunk and the deadline is 12PM (only 9 hours left).. You don't but if you do know how do I kill my boss so that I would look like a bug from a software made by our company killed him to take revenge of killing the bugs?1
If I need to write a script to do something quickly and I encounter an error:
pass # if curious, even print bad item
i.e. stupid errors such as url not found, access denied or whatever else I'm too lazy to find in a mess I wrote in 5-10 minutes, which mostly consists of a regex fetched stuff or similar
When you have 5 hours on a task, struggle for the first hour procrastinating , second hour trying to look into the problem ,then convincing yourself you cannot work until this mess of a file is sorted out, spends another hour restructuring the whole file , adding comments and moving related logic together.
Great 2 hours to do a 5 hour job
I'm trying out Linux, first installed Debian, then moved to Ubuntu.
Figured that I'd rather use a vm as my dev machine than mess with my main computer.
Quite nice. Though VirtualBox sometimes messes up.
Anyone have any suggestions for me?6
I think it's just me.
Every time I build something I feel as if I completely mess it up. For example, after a few days of working on an Android app after school, I feel like It's already become a mess. Perhaps it is just my aversion to making thousands of classes for every little detail, because I feel as if it would slow down my app (even if it were a minor penalty), but it usually makes for a onStart() function with ~90 lines of code which just makes me feel bad on the inside (and also a bad developer, so I wouldn't dare ask money for an app I built). Either way, if I would add these calls to other functions my Fragment/Activity class would still be fat. Also, typing 'context: Context' or 'Context context' just seems awkward.
I also feel like most frameworks are just a mess. Take Qt, for example. Quite a community touting how great it is (I use KDE Plasma btw) and I'm sure it is. I've got an idea for a desktop app but just the idea of it using some sort of JS (yes, I'm talking about QML which I'm considering) gives me the shivers. I already don't like Electron, so the idea of having JS embedded in a desktop app just doesn't sound right to me. But again, maybe it's just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2
Well finally install gentoo in aarch64 mode onto my rpi3. I wanna learn python because that'd make my life easier. I also wanna code a web game using js. I also want to finish some more parts of my hobby operating system. And maybe rework my dad's website because the code is a mess.
Is it just me or is android development just a pain in the ass? Ive done universal windows development before and it was great, but android just seems like a mess to me3
Guys me and my school mate(s) recently released an app onto Play and I'd love it if you'd go check it out :) the link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/... if hyperlinks work on here (it's called Blip otherwise, by Swappt) and I'd love whatever feedback you have. The github is https://github.com/Swappt/blip-app, if you want to mess around and have a look at the source. Thanks :)7
Finally after 3 fucking months, 15-20 fucking meetings, I got sign off for a feature release. The development took 3 weeks and was completed in March end.
I know being a financial institution and feature was regarding system handling funds, business guys need to worry a bit as any mistake in code can mess up the funds disbursal. But fuckers took 3 months to give sign off.
However, it's finally released and I can relax for now. #peace
Wtf Fedora? I install the develop version of TheFuck to work on a plugin, all of a sudden dnf only runs with sudo but gives a module not found when run as normal user? Whyy?
Python import system is a bloody mess, 1 file somewhere with the wrong name and it imports the wrong thing which doesn't contain the thing and crashes.
Can't we just please have STATIC BINARIES? Please? Fml1
smblevelworkshop2. It's a level editor for Super Monkey Ball 1/2.
I mean, yes I could try to add on to and fix my first attempt, but that's such a huge mess (speed < quality) that I just decided to scrap it and work on v2.
Our latest project.
I'm basically rewriting it from the ground up, because it's a mess. I hope to be able to finish it before the deadline (3 days from now).1
TFW when you are coding an import for a client and their source data is an inexcusable mess that should be killed with fire. At least thrice.
Seriously, someone should be held responsible for this kind of crap.
Just finished one of my final projects and while it was a huge mess, and I don't feel particularly proud of the work as a whole, I do feel proud of how I can feel I learned something and I'm a bit eager to put the acquired knowledge onto another project. I think the constant learning we have to do is one of the beauties of our discipline.
A single '=' can mess up badly:
(gdb) tb jobs.cc:541 if this->job_id_=2588573
Temporary breakpoint 1 at 0x48b571: file ../../../../../../pool/jobs.cc, line 541.
I fucking hate the person that created the ionic timepicker its such a fucking mess if you want to do anything advanced and it's so poorly documented that most of the time you just have to guess what you should do. Best part: this fucking component doesn't even use a Date Object it uses A FUCKING STRING that it parses, so I have to parse, unparse, parse, unparse. Who in their right mind thought this would be a good idea?!
What frustrated me the most was when I tried to use their min, max functionality. I used the component as a timepicker, so I ignored most of the Date Object and just initliazed them at 0. Afterwards set the hr, min, sec and did the same for the max value. Doesn't work... It just bugs out and I can only pick midnight of that day... Okay. I kid you not: tried for two hours to fix this shit. Console logged the crap out of that thing. Everything seemed right. Out of frustration I then just initlialized the max value like normal, so the date is the current date. AND SUDDENLY IT FUCKING WORKED. WHY?! FUCKING NOBODY KNOWS. WHO, WHY, WHAT?!
trying to figure out why this folder is allowing restricted files formats to run, and finding nothing but 'It's a windows folder' what the hell internet DX my school runs windows and it's in that directory children aren't allowed to mess with, of course it's a damn windows folder, but how can I stop them from running viruses accidentally in that folder without causing windows to stop working
Back to god damn research
Thank you for your time
After doing some nodejs and symfony 2. Did some WordPress today. Loved the simplicity of it, till I had to code a simple form. What a mess :-( not often I yearn for Drupal!4
So I'm being asked to move to a different country for a couple of months. While, this would have generally been a fun thing, the deadline's pretty tight. Add to it the fact that the knowledge transfer is going painfully slow and I'm already being asked to finish tasks on tech/stack I've never ever seen before. It's a mess!7
I uncommented the line inside a custom "library" made by a friend on a college project.
We spent 3 hours trying to make it work...the bug line was supposed to call one of the result functions, but the code had been made in a way that it was a mess and impossible to find at first.
That felt good.
How would you implement a system that allow people to share a product that's normally one price but because of the referral there is a discount. Oh and the discount is supposed to based which country you live in.
Right now the whole system runs on the honor system and a little front end verification. How do I clean up this mess??
Sure getting the user's location could work until they use a vpn. I don't really know what to do here.3
Whoo, I think I halved the cable mess on my desk since I *finally* removed my old 4-way KVM-switch! (I haven't used PS/2 keyboards/mice for a long time anymore..)1
I kinder have two phones now and I bought one only for fun and testing apps &dev rant , I made a simple java app where I can control one phone only because I don't wanna mess anything on the other , trying to find a way to hide a simcard inside ,so when I lost it I can always find it, or just run a custom ROM ,but too scared to mess it up haha4
Bret Victor - Inventing on Principle
Joe Armstrong - The Mess We're In
Jonathan Blow - Ideas about a new programming language for games
I think all my biggest influences are people I've never met... sad.1
Why Android makes it a pain in the ass to make apps that let theie users choose their own language? This pushes me to reinvent the wheel just to avoid their broken mess named Locale.
Guidewire is the work of satan. It is the worst framework I have ever worked with. OOTB code is full of antipatterns, creating gui is a pain, and it has its own language that is a pure joke. Every task I had had to have some sort of workarounds. You cant junit test it. Entity builders are a mess and you cant mock gosu classes. I hate it so much.
So my win10 PC with everything I have on it just got trapped in a boot loop, because I tried to start a VM.
No backup, no rescue DVD, noone here that could help me but myself.
Well I guess that is what I deserve for trying to try out a Linux system.
Luckily my project deadline is 3h away, so I have still time to fix this mess and start working.
Wish me luck guys.4
A person calling himself a technical lead should have some knowledge about what his subordinates are doing!! It's really a mess for me when my TL says I don't know how to do it, for a problem that I have been trying for almost 4 hours, but you'll have to do it somehow!!1
Cannot live in this mess of a backup anymore! I do a lot of video and photo work and I back up to multiple external HDD'S . I try make sure all the files are reflected on another drive. I to get a NAS and raid 1. Has any one got recommendations? I'm looking 3tb x 2, budget friendly. What's your backup situation like?1
So this happens way too often;
you make some changes in your code and open your testing environment and expect to see results, but you don't. You wonder why, did I mess something up? everything seems to be correct?
aaand then you glimpse for a second at the url and realise you have the staging environment page up..
This stupid windows update 1803 is complete mess. The windows changed my background image to blank (it was like dark screen all the way) fuck ..for a sec I thought OS crash or something. Any idea why this is happening with 1803 update?2
Last 2 days went as following:
This is a mess I've got to fix it before we can't actually do work.
Today: fixed finally now let's run
Wtf styles all messed up.
(Check source code)
Third party source changed wtf.
Can it be fixed:
Checks over whole page. Noooo even html wrong. Typescript wrong.
Rewrite 3 months worth of work in 2 days
Getting to mess and tinker with the latest tech before it even hits the market, easy to find a job that pays well, and of course getting to pretty much dress as casual as you want ( or not at all if you work from home !)
