I just realized that CPU's are essentially electronic hookers, for processes.
They'll service any process that calls upon them, but keep switching between various processes so that it can spend time fairly with each of its processes. And of course, they'll immediately abandon their current process if one with a higher priority reveals itself and attend to that one instead. Once it is finished, it'll return to its less-important processes.

I installed nvidia driver on my laptop (720M) and it showed black screen after reboot, BUT if I enter my password and hit enter the screen goes back to normal on desktop, it just didn’t show anything on the first lock screen
I’ve followed linux mint nvidia driver instructions, removing the package re installing, etc.
P.S. All of the question I found on the internet seems to be total black screen after installing the driver, whereas mine could work after I entered my password8 -

I've seen a job vacancy that asks for the following characteristics in a developer:
- extraverted, do'er (as opposed to thinker), out-of-the-box, curious, sees solutions and not problems, structural thinking vs. theoretical thinking, loves change, acts immediately, makes choices under stress, critically questions themselves if things go wrong
What the [censored] kind of programmer is that? Sounds more like a wannabe brogrammer type.
A typical, real programmer is introverted (for he is introspective, detail-minded and is therefore good at inspecting problems and finding solutions for them).
Seeing problems is not a bad thing, it's in fact necessary to be able to identify issues and not act like your typical manager who only wants to rush to solutions. He thinks deeply and theoretically before he takes action. Theory is the foundation of identifying a problem.
What programmer is stress-resistant? It's not normal for the human brain to be able to deal with stress; this is why switch-tasking is so hard.
Question yourself if things go wrong? Perhaps, but this sounds more like trying to shove the blame around.
Since we live in a rigid computer world with rigidly-defined protocols (say, HTTP), it is often useful to think in a conventional way. Out-of-the-box? Sure, if you're being innovative, or sure, as a tangential characteristic.
In my professional opinion, this vacancy reeks of bad corporate culture.. and the biggest alarm bell I find is: "There is free beer!" Err.. yeah. Anyway.17 -

So I downloaded the handwritten character dataset from EMNIST, took an hour to extract. Found out it has 814k + pngs. I haven't optimized all of them with Gimp 😕 change them to idx3-ubyte format, or make labels for each char in a c++ automation.. I'm tired of "agile" development. Sure the concept of a hacky POC that gets thrown out for a real implemention sounds great. But it never gets thrown out. That shitty POC become the foundation for a horrible mangled mess of hacky improvement after improvement. I'm tired of my boss telling me "do it the easy quick way and fix it later", like fuck off no. I can save man weeks worth of bug hunting a year down the road by actually taking an extra day to do it right. Like fuck does no one care about quality engineering anymore?

As a junior dev from a sysadmin and security background, this is a list of software development concepts I never seemed to truly understand but hope to(rated from most intimidating to least):
1) Frontend web development and all the huge world of javascript frameworks and tools. - It's more overwhelming than the political geography of the Holy Roman Empire in the Middle Ages.
2) Machine Learning, Deep Learning and A.I- too much math that fucks with my brain.
3) low-level programming(kernel,drivers) - sounds extremely interesting but the code in assembly/C/C++ looks like Linear A Minoan hieroglyphics.
4) Rx(insert language here) - I never get why it is useful or why someone invented this. Seems interesting though.
5) Code Reflection - sounds like Thelemic magick.
6) Packaging, automation, build tools, devops, CI, Testing -seems too complicated. I just want to run an executable at the client or make a web app that does something. Why all this process?6 -

I know this sounds odd, but I really find algorithms things of delightful beauty.
A creative solution to some very deceptively complex problems.
Sure, some implementations aren't the best, but seeing them after just makes me appreciate the time and effort that must have gone into designing things like Merge Sort, Binary Search, Greedy Algorithms, BST, and Dijkstra's Algorithm.
So! If your code is unoptimal, looks terrible, or is a sheer abomination, take a moment to appreciate the little piece of art you've made before you go and make it better.

Was recently asked if our team wanted to change from Java to Kotlin so I looked over the feature lists but don't see much that's impressive.
One argument was less boilerplate code but I think they're are libraries like Lomboq that can write that stuff for you.
The other was smart type casting and type inference and to that I'm like this sounds like giving monkeys a hammer.
Our JS codebase looks like shit... And our Java app just crashed in prod.
Getting a ton of text messages this morning and thankfully I'm on vacation still...
The error is not caused by NPE... but how some or logic spammed the db..
A new language isn't going to fix this.... And a team that writes this sort of shit logic clearly shows they are incapable of learning a new one probably...

I would like to have more time to work on the old, lonely, dust gathering site I started to build. There was a lot of new skills I wanted to test and train. But my personal life is getting stressful in the last time. Wife broke her leg and my son started in kindergarten.
I'm starting a new job in Dec, so I quit my current job. I had to reduce my work hours to collect my son from kindergarten. Sounds like I have much time now? Nope, there somehow is few time for programming. I enjoy bouldering (thats where the leg thing happend 🙄) and that's where even more of my time goes.

Worked 2 weeks on hunting a memory leak on a product.
Ended up writing object tracker to find the leak(ironically it was in garbage collector). Found the leak and fixed it. It sounds cool but what I pushed was 9 lines commented out 1 line added for 2 weeks work..
Doesn’t feel very fulfilling to work for 2 weeks to comment out few lines. Only silver lining is that I might turn my object tracker into a library for colleagues to use.

Used smart pointers everywhere in my code because I heard that's what we gotta do nowadays.
When learning about shared vs unique vs weak, I disregarded weak pointers because I didn't really understand them.
"That sounds like something for liberal pansies", I said to myself, then continued on with my STRONG shared and unique pointers.
Now my app leaks memory like a MOTHERFUCKER, if you can believe that.

Man I hate programming tests that have no practical application. I'm not doing one yet, just saw an example question that made me go...ok...I kinda get what you want but..why would you EVER need this. Googled and the consensus is that..*drum roll* you wouldn't ever need it because it's only useful to see if someone can solve it in an interview.
Why not give actual problems or at least actual test cases of things that way you can see if people can solve actual real life problems. Wouldn't that prove that people can reason their way through things or not? See if they can provide a good solution for something that someone else has already encountered instead of some nonsense that wouldn't have an actual practical application?
Maybe it's just me but if you give me a problem that sounds like it's useless for some reason my brain just goes, "Ah this sounds like it's useless, better not actually devote all my brain power to this"...4 -
All this small node modules in the npm repository that is a fork of another with a name that sounds almost like the other. It's a jungle. Then things are abandoned or changing name. It's a sampler, with space you can record in any of the tracks (the letters) and with your numpad you play the sounds.
You can distord the sound with hi/low filters by using your mouse on the right side.

I like to say programming is the art of "creative logic". Much like architecture has an aesthetic to consider or cooking has well-defined procedures with greatly varying inputs and outputs, there has to be room for creativity, be it at the planning stage or during wild improvisation sessions.
Without that creative aspect, software development sounds dreary to me.
Where science meets art is where the magic happens.

I've always sucked at OOP and OOD, _in part_ because I have never encountered a good, common sense, relatable real-world example or analogy of why one would use protected or private variables/objects/functions over public. I watch tutorials and it all just sounds like static in my head and the explanations are just like "well, it's obvious you want to do blah blah blah because reasons."

So the project I'm on has an Apache Wicket front end.... Pretty sure this thing was written around the same time I was learning to wipe my own ass. The senior dev is unreliable af and even when he is here, he sounds like a dial up connection.

I always wanted to become a business man like my dad and I was going to study BBA. Until I saw the tv show Person of Interest, I know it sounds silly but it inspired me to make my own AI system that can predict stuff.
I could not make the machine or Samaritan, but in my final year project, we managed to make an AI system that can categorize emails automatically without any input from the user. The system can create category names by itself and put the emails accordingly.7 -

Which at fist sounds logical, but it was requested on a website that is multi language installed (english has a .com and dutch has a .nl domain) meaning all installations target a completely different audience and to implement it correctly we would somehow have to make it automatically resolve the url? Like what the fuck do they want us to do, so we called the actual Client of the project and he's like;

From one point of view, it should contain core concepts that still remain the same, from the other, reading 2011 book in 2018 sounds like a not very good decision.

So I've been really into steampunk fashion lately. And I really want to build a steampunk themed PC. It sounds like a very fun project, and I've put together a few ideas so far. Sure, over the years I've changed it to SSD, maximized the ram and changed the thermal gel.. although it sounds more like a jet plane than a notebook, it runs latest OS X (not macOS 🙄) and is still great for web development in 2017.
I mean it really runs pretty good for a 8+ years old machine. It really does.

I feel bad for Monkey X, I've never used it, but it sounds like a good language. You've probably never used it - it's a cross platform language that compiles natively to iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and more. It also can be exported into an HTML5 game. And than reusing that value in if again and so on.
Even if it sounds trivial, there was a time where it was not and "==" was only associated with "you use that in if/while only" rather than "a == b" returns a bool(ean)/int.

I inherited a nasty old legacy c# desktop app a few years ago, I was a sql developer so it was a steep learning curve, but I’ve tried to make it better, fixing things as I go.
I had the bright idea of mentioning that I would look at starting to add unit tests etc.

So, I am revamping windows XP with windows 10 icons and windows 8 sounds. but, when I was trying to replace explorer, obviously there was that error you get when renaming something to a file that's already there. then I delete the file. then rename it again. Error!! File exists with that name! what?! so I delete it again and rename it. Error! so XP has a builtin system that replaces any foreign or nonexistent explorer.exe with the default. Also, aero cursors look like shit on XP.3

I dont get why companies shy away from proper source managment and devops it just sounds like managmentheaven:
Your developers would write down every single thing they did in nice and easily quantifiable units of work, with then they did it exactly to the minute, and with CI/CD patches could be released directly after being tested. And tests mean the devs even safe some QA time.2 -

Ummmmmm..... Doesn't that mean the opposite pretty much??? Sounds like they are willing to liberally give up equity. Either way I though that was a really non-sensical thing to include.6 -
Looking for some career advice. I am currently working as a frontend dev in a design studio (because it just made sense to do so and I do enjoy it). When I started off my professional career, I decided to go frontend and then at some point (maybe) do a transition towards backend. At this point, 2 years later, its looking more like a transition to a fullstack position if there ever is a transition.
Problem is, by next year, I will become a senior frontend dev in a design studio. This sounds to me like I have stamped out a frontend career. Would someone hire me (who is looking for a transition) as anything else than a frontend dev at that point?4 -

Librarian sounds like a nice job. Sometimes I wouldn’t mind being a truck driver. Would get to see lots of places and the pay is really good right now with shortages of drivers who aren’t high on drugs every day. -

I've been thinking, and i feel like being the bad guy... So, for now, I'm also an "idea guy" if you know what i mean...
Idea: This site could have a feature like "product recommandations" (just like long rants or something [tyical idea guy saying]), where users could recommend stuff like programs, peripherials, or anything dev related.
This could be done using tags, like certain tags would get sorted into the "product recommandations".
Sounds nice, doesn't it?

yeah sure, having all 5 devs only ever working directly on the production branch and not being allowed to save anything post-release unless it's an urgent bugfix sounds like a great idea

I hate AudioContext. Visitors might like it since it does not permit websites to blast loud sounds. However, as a developer, I hate it. Before AudioContext existed everything was cool. Suddenly it appeared from nowhere. I had no clue that Chrome added it. Now my websites aren't as exciting at first glance anymore.

i had have thinking about a project where a developers community , work us together and meet us , like a coworking , but online , share us desktop , videoconference , real time meetups about coding , freelance or enterprise dev , share projects , but human touch around , not forum , something more social , share locations etc etc ....... it sounds cool?
