*came in this morning to see this conversation in slack from the remote teams*
Dev: Hey guys, I'm trying to push to the develop branch, telling me its locked. Is there a new process?
Lead dev: Yes I locked it because the repo is now dead, the last release that went out is the last for this year and ever for this app. Were merging this app with another, starting from the last release's code. We'll all have to swap over to the new repo soon.
Dev: ... eh ok I didn't put anything in the last release branch as it wasn't urgent. Normally our process is anything in /develop goes out in the new year. I've been merging to /develop for the last few weeks ... is that code now gone?
*14 question mark emoji reactions*
Lead dev: Yes
*27 angry emoji reactions*
Engineering manager: WHAT? when was this decided? When was it communicated?
Lead dev: oh I assumed my product counterpart had been spreading the messages around, have they not?
Several teams: no, nope, first i'm hearing of it.
Lead dev: Ok, i'll ask them what happened. Be aware then that most of the stuff thats going into develop now, most likely won't be allowed in until March. They want to prioritise releasing this new merged app and don't want anything to impact it.
Dev: So wait, i'm working on stuff now. What do I do? Where do I base the branch? Where do I merge?
<no response>
*My team comes into the office*
Dev: eeehhh ... what does this mean for our past 4 weeks of work? and all the stuff needed to go out in January?
Me: not.a.fucking.clue16 -

Hey, @google! I found a bug. The last 3 choices are missing.
The lack of balance is disturbing me.10 -
Living in a tiny house and having a remote-only job (and no lappy) means I get the wonderful, lovely privilege of working in my bedroom... with my 18mo (who will not leave me alone), and my girlfriend (who won't fucking leave). It's positively great!
Blasting music is often not enough to drown out the sound, and certainly does nothing for getting hit with toys or screamed at to get picked up, so I get basically nothing done during the day. And that's presupposing I'm not begged to run errands/go to lunch with her, both of which take precious hours. (She won't take the baby out alone, so she's always here unless we find a babysitter)
At least it's quiet after 9pm, so I stay up coding for as long as I can. But 18mo's wake up super early, and the girlfriend prefers to stay in the room until I'm up... so even with earplugs I don't get enough sleep. A monster a day and a bottle of Tito's vodka a month is all that keeps me sane.
Why can't I just be fucking left alone to fucking work? I'm our only goddamn source of income.
It's no wonder we're fucking broke.
And to make matters worse, I'm being downsized... and considering the above, I doubt I'll be able to land a new job. 😡15 -
Can I only pick one?
I don't hate a lack of skill by itself. Incompetence, in my book, refers to a lack of skill combined with being in a position of responsibility.
The junior/intern in my team writes pretty bad code, but that is OK. He asks questions, I give pointers and bounce back his PRs ten times in a row, and he keeps fixing things without complaints.
My boss however... still writes PHP as if he's living in the 90s. He doesn't visit scrum meetings because he "isn't a developer". He thinks of a new feature while pooping, writes it without telling anyone, and throws it into production without making a PR.2 -
One of my favorite quotes:
"A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine"
Had to apply this liberally at my last job. Even had it posted at my desk for a time.1 -
PHP's lack of consistence in naming conventions with built-in functions. For example, str_split() and strlen().8

Just deleted my Facebook and github account (after migrating over to bitBucket) and realised.
I had more followers on github than friends on Facebook. Feels bad man..3 -
Words to live by as a developer:
“A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine”
But somehow people(you guys knows who they are) doesn’t seem to get that!2 -
We had issues with lack of disk space on our production SQL server. Another developer decided to delete the databases he thought weren't in use to clear some space.
Ever think about checking first?!
Production chaos!7 -
I always look at this app but never post anything because of lack of amazing Dev things happening to me. Still one of my favourite apps.8

It's a shame that Adobe doesn't support Linux for their creative suit. I know lots of artists and designers that don't use Linux regularly because of this, since Photoshop and illustrator are the de facto tools for their work. Adobe xd seems to be awesome, but I can't use on my pc due the lack of support -.-21

On today's episode of Fucked Up Office Drama-Rama: useless project manager finally gets her desired outcome after 6 months of whining to her boss about a team member being "difficult to work with". She has only been with us for a year and is the only one that has had any "issues" with him, and the problem has simply been that he has called her out when her lack of planning, lack of effort, lack of common sense and lack of technical understanding has caused the team extra work and pressure. His contract gets terminated, she stays on, and on top of it all she's managed to hire a replacement without consulting anyone and therefore has the complete wrong skills compared to what we need. We needed someone with frontend skills, she decided on a senior backend / architect arrogant fuck that after only a few weeks is already showing us it's not going to be fun.
Fuck my life. Time to look for a new client.5 -

I need a break.
A break from stress of endless expectations
From school
From work
From being made fun of
From criticism
From criticizing myself
From not being able to do fun things
From vague instructions
From a lack of sleep
from inconsistency.
From unclear objectives
From financial/medical/emotional stress
From life
From hatred
From destruction of my emotional stability
From a lack of confidence
From unfulfilled decisions
From trying to hide under a mask
From jealousy
From lists
From repetitive obliteration of any hope I have
From me crap talking myself
From pleasing people
Oh well, at least after tomorrow, I’m on full-time break...12 -

That bitch....
- Run a Win10 in a VM
- Have >20GB of free space on host
- W10 decides to download updates
- your host OS runs out of free space
- VM gets paused due to lack of free space
20GB for an update.. seriously..
seriously...
I mean..
Seriously....
ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME????

No one uses Git, nor any code hosting service, but I'm the Junior.
Yeah okay, fuck you and your fucking siloes.
I won't tolerate lack of version control anymore, I'll be looking for the next "professional opportunity".11 -

My home feels like $work owns a corner of it, and I can’t walk near there without feeling this this intense psychological dread.
Lack of time boundaries is pretty awful, too.6 -
Everything but UI/UX
Because I suck at it, lame but true, I love every kind of code, from MEAN and LAMPP to assembly, but when it comes to UI I just lack of the imagination and creativity to design something that looks averagely good.6 -
Every time I have to deal with my boss code and lack of convention and everything that makes a clean code I just want to scream like a bitch and punch him in the face without minding breaking my own hand.8

Oh, nice. Now Windows 11 doesn't just fuck up AMD CPUs with lack of performance, but also SSDs. NTFS at its finest, but see the tags.17

Adios Motherfucker!
Finally got that pile of misery finished. That simple ticket exploded in complexity and had quite a bit of scope creep. So so glad it's over. I mean, apart from code review and QA. But still. It's done!
Also: I may have been drinking already. Clearly not enough from the painful lack of typos and silliness. Gonna go work on that.6 -
- Hey how are your fingers today, do they still hurt?
- They're OK, why do you ask?
- Oh, then it must have been your lack of programming skills which made me puke while looking at your code.1 -
Dear Atlassian Support,
In my life I had a lot of experiences...
But your software manages to replace all these experiences with a unique feeling of depression, hatred, anger... Only negative emotions.
Not once have I said anything good about your software - not once in > 5 years.
Whenever your chum bucket of mismanagement and misanthropy stops working, it's never the fault of the end user, the administrator or someone else.
It's entirely your fault.
Fucked up upgrades, lack of documentation, catastrophic handling of logging, lack of support of current database systems, lack of proper migration and clean up of plugins, ....
I could go on. But it's really just and endless tirade.
I wish I could stop management for even giving you money for the pile of poo you call software, but sadly they don't listen.
But there's hope on the horizon.
Thanks for making people go cloud only.
No one wants that.
It would mean entrusting that pile of poo to the craptastic hands of your irresponsible people.
No one really wants that.
Not even management who blindly paid the license fees all the times.
Thank you for your cloud only movement.
Maybe we can finally find an alternative and I can finally start a therapy for the PTSD I have thx to your software.3 -

Me in my head: I've got this great idea for an app. You can probably build it in a hour. This is going to be awesome!
Ten minutes later: Screw this, can't be bothered anymore. What's on tv.?1 -
Me: Hey can you sign up for tool X. Our company has an enterprise license, theres an internal form to fill out.
Him: Sure, I filled out a form and it says i'm on a waiting list, not sure if I used the right link.
Me: Was it a form on our companies intranet site?
Him: Yes.
Me: Did it say tool X on the top?
Him: Yes.
Me: Did it say sign up / create account?
Him: Yes.
Me: So I asked you to sign up for tool X under our companies license. You went onto our companies intranet, and filled out a form for that tool, that said create an account ... where exactly is the confusion? If there was more than one way to do it, I probably would have said something.5 -
Got moved to testing last week, (due to lack of testers) being a developer it requires a whole different mind set to test !!!
But running selenium scripts and again verifying manually sucks.
But what hurts the most is rejecting something that you approved during peer review 😱🤭3 -
Dev memes usually make me cringe. It's like the people who make them are trying too hard; the lack of social skills just jumps off the screen.2
-
One thing I've noticed about devRant is the ratio of web dev/mobile dev posts to database/architecture/big data dev posts. There's A LOT of you web peeps out there, and not enough data dudes, which I guess justifies my constant demand, salary and lack of competition. Just an observation.9
-
Not necessarily on here, but Devs tend to bitch about designers and their lack of basic dev skills/understanding (talking about webdev). But when devs try to design it usually ends with a horrendous piece of visual garbage. Respect each others profession and the outcomes will be better. That's why Apple is now one of the most envied companies on the planet.8

Out of necessity (or rather: lack of support) I've been neglecting my test suite for the past ~month. Now that one of the beta versions of RSpec has better Rails 6 support, I can finally get back to writing tests. Yay!
I just merged staging into my testing branch, and it's now 344 commits ahead of origin! eep.
So, I've got lots of tests to write. yay.random root loves her tests test suite yay! i didn't break anything! rspec root talks in third person in the tags surprise!3 -
So I got a couple of C.H.I.P. single-board computers a good while back because Raspberry Pi Zero was always out of stock.
I named them pringles, the smooth and synthetic one with a GUI, and ruffles, the sturdier and rugged one with a headless OS.
...They still lack a definitive purpose in life.4 -
I often want to scream at co-workers because of their lack of attention to details.
I believe attention to detail is important for software engineers.
I tell my junior developers that "it works" isn't enough, you need to make sure it works as perfectly as possible and paying attention to detail helps with that.13 -
I really enjoy hearing:
- This is number one priority
- It is urgent
- the highest priority
Just because someone somewhere didn't do his planning it doesn't mean that his lack of judgement should affect me one bit. You made your bed my friend, now sleep on it.1 -
You know... fuck frontend development.
I don't mind developing a nice interface and thinking about how users will work with my software. But I HATE (lack of a stronger word) the whole npm/grunt/bower/yarn/everyfuckingframeworkclient chaos.
Can we just pick ONE fucking tool and mature it.

Today, at the Minnesota Developers Conference, has proven to me how big of a gap there is in gender diversity with technology. This realization came to me when I visited the men's bathroom to be greeted by a ridiculous line, and witnessed the lack of a line to the woman's restroom.2

is it just me, or do some people just make life difficult for the fucking sake of making life difficult?
now, lets ignore the lack of sanitised data, lets also ignore the lack of prepared statements, and for the love of god... lets ignore some magic numbers, because I still don't know what they mean yet....
but why! why would you create an array, implode it, smash it into a database query on the fucking fly, instead of just adding the data into the query in the first place.... it's not like you were doing this right to begin with, but this... this is next level!28 -

Have I ever mentioned how much TypeScript compensates for JavaScript's Lack of being statically typed?
It's. So. Much. Better.8 -
Dear everyone who doesn't write JS and has some hand-wringing concern about its lack of static typing, lack of threading, or its suitability for large back-end services:
It's fine, we've got this. You go back to discussing contravariance or whatever it is you do.

I was working on a project, it was a race to the finish.
We are all on very little sleep, like none. Everyone is in a haze.
Last minute a bug comes up that we cannot explain. One of a lead guys say he will handle it but we can see him degrading.
We left him alone, until he comes out of the quite room looking like a scolded child.
“I can’t do it guys... I really can’t. I’m stuck and I can’t do it. I gotta go for a walk...”
As he walks away I say...
“Did you push your branch? I’ll have a look”
Now to be honest, I’m fucking running on fumes at this point as well. So I start to think... what’s the low hanging fruit here?
Spelling mistakes. Brackets. Shit like that.
It was a spelling mistake.
When he walked out of the building we were a fucking mess. When he walked in we were all high-fiving.
He looked at me and said...
“What was it?”
I said, “it was a really strange little error but I got it fixed.”
The guy, who is NOT the touchy feely type, hugs me like I saved his life. And in his ear I whispered...
“It was a spelling mistake” then I winked at him.
We high fived, released the fucking code and never spoke of it again. (Except laughing over a few beer)
I felt like a fucking super hero2 -

What is it about SQL that invites people to do things in utterly ridiculous ways? Haven't ranted in a while so here it goes.
Head of product took me (senior dev) to a high value client workshop/demo session and over the course of two days found the reason behind why the dev team has been pushed to the limit as of late and sales/product team has been making promises to clients without checking with dev leaders on reasonable delivery dates on massive new features.
I tried my best to manage expectations by differing talking about delivery dates by saying "lets discuss that with the team" rather than giving out dates right now. But as soon as the meeting ends he sends an email to the client confirming delivery dates on features that we have done no research on or even specialize in!
Please tell me this is not how well established businesses work or is that the new reality of things. In either case I wanna find a new job :/2 -
So, I have a bit of a question for you guys..
I'm a self taught coder, but I think I lack some elements regarding the architecture side of software development.
Does anyone have some valuable sources to learn about it?
Thanks in advance :)11 -
Competent software engineers are in high demand in Belgium. If you are looking for a workplace that treats devs as demi-Gods, relocate now.
Perks available to you are:
- working from home 2-5 days/ week.
- English at the workplace because the northern & southern parts don't speak each other's languages
- terrible rush hour traffic jams allowing you to flexibly choose your schedule as long as there is enough overlap
- pension & hospital insurance
- a company car (electric or fuel)
- ability to get away with any lack of soft skills as long as you're technically strong
- a competitive salary (2-4k/mo), even with almost half of it being eaten by taxes
- limited competition, because there's a sore lack of competent developers15 -

And check if anything new has been posted on slashdot since I last checked 5 minutes ago (nope)... And maybe see if there's any updates to Sublime Text or new useful packages that can help improve workflow... Ooh came across article on how to improve workflow... Hm someone mentioned a new task-management system in comments, gotta check that out... I'll just sign up for a demo-account and... Hm but what if there are any better ones? Better google for comparisons. Wait, isn't there a new episode of Silicon Valley today? Gotta see that first, no time tmr. Hmm also new episode of Archer, and American Gods. Better get watching these out of the way first, or I can't concentrate... Ah, wait, it's dinner time, no point starting anything until after that."

The lack of human interaction in most dev jobs is really frustrating especially that some companies solve this deficiency with hundreds of meetings per week which is even more annoying.1
-
Do you get informed about the reasons behind business decisions in your job?
That wasn't the case in my last job and I dreaded my code for that reason.
I think this kind of lack of information can lead to bad engineering decisions and unstructured code. Also, this doesn't lead to the needed ownership of your work.
What do you think?3 -
Most commerce site are actually disgusting with how much screen real estate taken up by navbars and useless options.
People visit for the content and products yet they make it so hard to fucking use. Those sites deserve a lack of online sales.1 -
I own a start up with two friends of mine - one is great with business, and the other tries to be both a developer and on the business side. I'm fully on development and I find it extremely frustrating to work with him. He copies and pastes code, doesn't understand it, and worse still will never admit it and digs himself in deeper into the hole he's dug. He doesn't code as a hobby and it's purely just assignments in university that he spends any coding time on. I've tried helping him to improve over the past few months, but nothing seems to ever do anything as there's no desire to solve problems - just really dollar signs in his eyes is probably the only reason he's in computer engineering. Recently we got a contract with an organisation to make an extremely simple app for android and iOS as the first stage of their planned development. As I did the most of the work on another project during the summer (while juggling a job with another company as an internship), I asked if he could take this so he can try to improve and equalise work so he does his share. Not only did it take 3 weeks, but it's shoddy as hell and looks like it was done in the space of an hour. In reality it took days for him. It's unbearable! The android code I saw was clearly just copied from various sources and mashed together - there was no planning, no understanding of abstractions, and was legit a giant class or two with extreme amounts of redundancy. Hell, he even asked me for help for trying to implement fragments when I pointed out that making screens with buttons and such will be extremely difficult if he is only passing in strings. Any of you guys experiences something like this before? I'm planning on bailing in the coming weeks once my exams are over with for university as it's becoming unbearable.6

Got transferred on to a new team. The team I was on previously was successful, had great processes, and very smart people. New team was floundering, very late, no processes, and crotchety. Did my best with the (lack of) expectations and information given to me. No one gave me any feedback. Get called into a meeting to discuss my lack of performance and failure to meet goals. If I hadn't needed the money I would have walked out. Transferred teams a month later.

I am amazed. My laptop died due to lack of electricity (no battery), but Windows still managed to prepare update and forces me to install it when I turned it back on. And of course it requires multiple restarts.1

Just got upset with a coworker due to not understanding the code written, logic, lack of documentation, comments. Nothing!
Other coworker: But Dave, you added that feature last December. Remember?
Me: So what are we working on today? -
It's obvious that a lot of product managers need to take basic stats classes. Your metrics are pointless and lack direction. 🖕2

I love the speed and lack of bugs in Sublime, especially when dealing with large files but its so shit in the themes department imo.7

A word of advice:
If you integrate email verification very tightly in the registration flow, it will be a world of pain to implement changing the email address.
It's alright, I didn't want to do anything this afternoon anyway.4 -
Numbers implementation in so many freaking languages!!!
Lack of naming consistency, and meaning.
And yes, setImmediate and setTimeout 0...
But the biggest feature issue is that people can code without thinking!!! There should be some hardware security to impede stupid fucks from committing code...1 -
Isn’t it weird how a paper notebook is more private than anything you type on a computer, despite the complete lack of encryption? You don’t control what happens to your CPU under the hood, and you never had that control.15

"In the field of psychology, the Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in w/c people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability."

Decided to fresh install ubuntu due to unexpected freezes, now I am stalling the Budgie flavor because J reaally wanted Solus.. but they still lack support for a lot of packages.
Well, now I have to set it up and its 12 am.. good for me.5 -
I’ve tried to think about it and all I can come up with is that I think my biggest insecurities are my procrastination and lack of faith in my abilities to get and keep a job as a dev.

"When developers encounter confusion, they usually blame the language instead of their lack of understanding."
I love this. It's from the You Don't Know JS Book Series that I'm reading. -
I wonder how much of the repeat behavior is trained by anxiety
Certainly a lack of resources contributes or getting stuck in getting the same resources over and over
Damn you people6 -
If you're a PM, don't complain about the lack of documentation if you only gave your developers 20% less time than they needed just to write the code.
-
Don’t you feel like development with Android Studio is 50% figuring out why the f*ck is not building, or running, resetting cache, clean build, rebuild… etc, and 50% coding? Or is it my lack of experience?11

Today I was told by my team leader that I hadn't given them proper access to our website and they can't edit it. The repo is hosted on github and is opensource. Also the link can be found on the site....8

Welp, there goes internet freedom.
I'm all for deregulation, but not for ISPs. Not when there is no competition. Not when a lack of competition is enforced by local, state, and federal law.
Deregulation of a government-enforced monopoly is just gross cronyist malfeasance. -
Nothing in my office like incompetent developers or their lack of regard for security really bothers me.

People really have short term memories. It seems everyone has suddenly forgotten the nonexistent lack of privacy at Zuck’s platforms.
To be fair, I think competition is good for consumers and Musk has been doing a very terrible job of managing Twitter.
But not having most platforms of social communication controlled by one company would be better.5 -

Nope, I haven't built a startup. I lack:
Product Idea
Funding
Motivation
Basically all of what's required.5 -
Daily stand-ups might seem like a joke when done remotely, but I believe they help unite the team, and they play a key role for project managers, even if they're brief. The bigger issue might be just some of the dev's attitude towards it, and the lack of communication through out the project development.4
-
I've come to realize that when I get annoyed, it's usually because my lack of tolerance that is the problem. Annoying co workers is the perfect self improvement tool.1

Lack of trust from the bosses. You don't like the fact that you can't see what we're doing if we're not in the office. Joke's on you, we're still checking devRant and stuff as soon as you're away.

I think my worst trait is my lack of organization outside a work environment
I spent a few hours cleaning my old hard drives and I freed up 600GB of just duplicate files. Everything from driver backups and progam exe's to simple text documents
Most were in subfolders of a folder named some variation of 'sort_later' :/ oof5 -
Came back to work while being sick due to lack of sickdays. I'm near comatose from headache and coughing going zombie around the office.
PM: How you doing?
Me: Underpaid, overworked and sick. Can't do shit about the latter.1 -
I often don't see devs sad about the lack of sex in their lives.
Is it because we get fucked in the ass by management every now and then, to make up for it?4 -
Imposter syndrome comes from a lack of experience. Experience comes from trying things and figuring out what works. Find people with experience and ask them what works.2

The shit code I wrote before my cs degree is marginally better than the shit code I write now. The lack of of improvement is related to the shit job I got after my degree. Cs degree did teach me a lot of good oo concepts and design.... That I rarely use due to shit legacy code I maintain.1

Overcome the fact that even though I'm starting to be really good at what I'm doing, someone will be better at what I do, and there are always new things to learn from anything. And instead of crying on my own lack of skills, don't waste time and learn from these guys who are better1

Fr-Agile
Francium Agile Methodology is characterized by lack of proper planning, and constant interruption during the development process as specs are pulled out of product owners asses ad nauseam. Fr-Agile methodology is known to result in an extremely radioactive team environment.1 -
Why is it so hard to make friends with other developers?
Nobody understands how hard it is to sit on my ass all day while my wife complains about the lack of attention I give her. Anyone else relate?7 -
Best way to get in the zone: a meditation smoke, mountain dew, a lack of humans to distract me, loud music and most importantly a problem.
You put a decent enough problem in front of me and I'm in front of the screen for days before I realize I need to eat.1 -
Microsoft stuff.
Everything they are promoting and developing have problems with c++, either messy implementations, non standard extensions, weird behaviours, passive aggressive stance toward official iso standard, broken api, lack of components(libs) or non portable ones, shitloads of errors traced back to undescribed, undocumented anywhere dlls, and shitload of other problems -
I now understand why people say python is such a damn hard language to keep big projects. I'm so hell lost in all those code indentations and lack of conventions!!!!

What do devs here do when lack of motivation strikes hard? I have lots of projects in Swift and RN in progress but zero drive to touch them.

Not going insane due to lack of documentation.
In retrospect it may have been that I was still learning to properly apply and read docs so eh.3 -
I see here so much motivation in work you are doing and i am here standing without any inspiration, motivation in learning things, i can't stay focus more than several minutes reading interesting topic. I use to simulate and create different network, doing great stuff (i am or maybe was addict for networking) How you guy/ girls can do it? Some tips would be awesome.

Started out on some Go code today. It's looking really promising so far - the lack of implicit stuff is really refreshing. Less is more.1

Why open-source matters: I can remove annoyances like starting in front-facing mode from a smartphone camera software, and hide the button for the "effects" drawer that I never use since I can add Sepia or black/white in post processing should I ever need it.
Both of these annoyances cause missing moments. If the source code of the camera software is open, and if the operating system is rooted, these utter annoyances can be removed.
There are open-source third party applications like "Open Camera", but they lack quick launch support and might have, presumably due to lack of optimization, a two-second shutter lag. Big no. -
Have a wonderful weekend now, fellow devs!! Enjoy the sun, enjoy your company or maybe lack thereof. Is there something you have been thinking of trying but put it off as just a dream? Try it! Take the first step! Enjoy your life!1

This guy has to be trolling. If not I fear for the future of programming. The whole article suffers from a lack of any understanding of anything.

Trying to reverse engineer a competitor's system, which is a pain due to lack of documentation (despite the fact that it's "open source")... Then I run into some documents on the web about a much earlier version, and suddenly, we're in business 😈😈

I'm on a remote contract (has no centraloffice at our company) and was hired to work remote.
New PM wants to reenergize culture. Everyone has to come in and no more flexible hours. Lack of space means no more dual monitors. Lack of desks means we push desks together to form a "conference table." More people working means slower internet. Three people have separate meetings? Someone can stay, someone can sit in reception, and someone is in the hall.
But hey... we can see each other now and we're all available to one another.2 -
Only found this out after the fact, but an almost total lack of authorisation checks in an exposed API has got to be up there.

When your Chromebook/Crouton starts complaining about lack of available memory and uninstalling programs isn't helping and the "shadow vault" has consumed everything, so you just say "fuck it" and Powerwash the whole thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The lack of appreciation (from the user/management side) as a backend developer and DevOp is frustrating sometimes. But having nice colleagues who value your work makes it worthwhile.
-
Feeling the need to know everything about web dev (frontend for now) already yesterday, though not having a clue, what to look at first, as it's its own universe. Everything has a million ways of implementation, combination and features worth looking at.
Already have worked with basic HTML, CSS and JS, had a short look a Typescript, being confronted with React Typescript + Redux + thunk, SASS, learned some basics of all.
Feeling lack of motivation to build smth to learn, yet I want to explore. Afraid to get stuck in tutorial hell, although I know, changing smth here and there in the projects is a must for learning. Feeling the lack of understanding the bits and pieces of what can be styled with CSS in which way. Understanding how npm, webpack, the strange parts of JS, ES6, work.
So ... freaking ... much ....2 -
You try to write fancy transitions, but no amount of visual effects can disguise such a cavernous lack of talent.1
-
Don't you just love those people who sell projects which require months and months of hard work with a due date of two whole fucking months?! And worst of all, they act all fucking surprised when the project is not finished on time and it contains loads of bugs because of lack of testing time. Drives me insane..
-
Thanks a phooking zillion for *not* telling me in advance that the test service was taken down! *grunting* It feels like the more available means of communication, the less people actually communicate.2

How does one get experience on working in teams if every project I've built has been solo because of a lack of developers from where I am from?4

Anybody seen the The "Boring Software" manifesto? what do you think?
As software developers we are tired of the false claims made by evangelists of the latest and greatest technology. We will no longer confront them with their lack of understanding of computer science fundamentals, nor will we defend our lack of knowledge of their hyped and volatile technologies.
More at https://tqdev.com/2018-the-boring-s...2 -
Aren't we, software engineers, the whiniest sort out there? Jira ain't good, Redmine ain't good, nothing can satisfy our needs for lack of commitment towards project administration. 😂
I just catch myself sometimes writing obscene amount of hours in timesheet under "US management in Jira" topic or similar. 😂2 -
Poking fun at another dev's typo but their lack of command of the English language doesn't even let them appreciate it.1
-
How do you go forward with a project you're stuck on and you can't find the motivation to keep going?
I'm working on a relatively small and simple project for a friend. It's not that complicated overall, I've completed most of it already, and there are no stringent deadlines, so I can take my time.
But the last part has turned out to be a bit more complex to implement properly than I expected, and due to the fact that I can't seem to find a solution that satisfies me I'm completely put off from continuing.
Which is completely stupid of course, I want to finish this (and get paid), but my motivation to even open the project files is nowhere to be found.
The whole coronavirus lockdown situation isn't helping either for that matter, I feel like I'm going crazy stayin locked inside these four walls all day every day.
Sigh6 -
effin management always commiting something they didnt think through and now the team suffers the consequences of their stupid actions, one of them is that they fucking commited a night of development phase for a major code revision fuck that shit cause that major revision also came for their fucking lack of analysis and mediocre mindset during the requirements gathering phase fuck that
-
At the end of the sprint half of the stories didn't get done due to lack of coordination to put 4 people in the same room and get them to agree on the solution.
During Retro my Scrum Master says: Are these stories not done because we haven't estimated them during sprint planning? 😂 -
Sometimes I wonder if it's the norm, that the frontend reassemble almost nothing on the backend...
Even worse when a solution is agreed and sold one way, but implemented another.
Usually eliminating the opportunity to properly expand on, without hacky work-arounds.. further driving the technical debt..1 -
Really wish there was a site that contained a library of fundamentals of development processes like basic networking, specific game mechanics and the such.
I don't mean show code but explain some of the maths and algorithms that go into the programming itself.
If I had the time I'd build it...5 -
Lack of sleep, being tired.
Yepp, that is boring. But that's what kills my productivity. Anything else is just excuses for being lazy..Because of lack of sleep and being tired -
I am always afraid to press that delete button on my rant which currently has 165 ++, eventhough it might have a confirmation message, i do not trust that button.

Fuck. Lack of sleep messes up work. I was writing code changes to a build for two hours but I deployed it to the wrong directory every time and then I wondered why my changes weren't reflected..
sleep++ needed.. -
From my job applications I have concluded that there is a large surplus of front-end developers and a serious lack of back-end ones.

it’s not a lack of motivation, an inexplicable unwillingness to act, that obstructs your path to success and happiness. It’s the invisible boundaries in your head that you’re tripping over — sometimes without ever moving at all.1

I can't get any work done from home. Not due to lack of discipline to get going, but due to lack of good coffee. In every workplace I've been at I've always brewed good coffee. And in school there is good coffee to buy cheap. But making coffee at home always taste like shit. So i procrastinate, searching for the right coffee, filter and blaming my brewer for being a piece of shit machine. I mean.. how can I possibly get work done without coffee?1

Rant.
Why so many people complain about this lack of a 3.5mm jack? It's 2016 and we still have that fossil of a tech from the early 20th century. A digital device with an analog input... I mean, come on! It's for the future.10 -

I need help,
I'm on that task for a month and it's a shitty task where I need to write algorithms too complicated for my level and I'm totally demotivated right now... I can't even understand my own code and can't focus for more than 5min... I just wanna go home and never see that code and work on that anymore...
Has this situation ever happened to you ? What should I do ?6 -
The only reason I didn’t commit suicide yesterday was a lack of emotional resource to go to darknet and research how to buy a gun14

Get a solid educational foundation in software engineering. There is so much more than just developing or programming. In addition be sure you get a solid understanding of object oriented principles. This really makes the difference between highly educated devs and self taught devs. The latter almost always have some lack of knowledge.

What do you think about the Crystal language?
It looks kinda cool, but I'm somewhat worried about the lack of Multithreading and the beta status so far.21 -
i actually managed to set up the system i was gonna use for a website! hah! take that, minimal coding knowledge and lack of beta subjects at school!

For me, developing phone networks, the Client only interacts with me as the front end. If there is a problem with an upstream provider/carrier, the client doesn't know that and we take the brunt of the complaints.
So, what really sucks is when there is a lack of control. -
In Xcode you can't have your project file view AND compile errors/warnings view visible at the same time. You always need to switch between them because they are different tabs in the left panel called the Navigator.
This lack of customizability is the worst part of Xcode. -
Hey guys, I'm new to a dev management role. One of my responsibilities is to write tasks and do code reviews for the team. I keep getting issues in code due to the lack of contextual understanding of the codebase. How much detail should I include in a task? Should I expect my team to understand the context of the task/codebase?3

I've got a question for people who understand GO:
Why do I get this error in one of my projects but not in the other?

Both projects lack module at the root of my workspace, but only one of them refuses to cooperate...
Bother.2 -

Stackoverflow...some love it some hate it. I personally really like and try and again as much as possible, but what thing that is really starting to annoy me is lack of upvoting on questions. People will happily down vote poor queations and tend to upvote and downvote answers appropriately but there seems to be huge lack positive feedback on good questions... It's very annoying. Anyone else agree?

Its just frustrating being a person who learns tech or any other stream from the internet. As much as i love the huge amout of information we have access to, it becomes difficult to sort through the tons of information and learn something. When i was a kid , there was a text book which had concepts which i had to understand to increase my knowledge but now without a proper sylabbus and no single source material i'm consuming everything and i end up re-reading same concept again , except this time its from another book. How do u devs get a proper sylabbus and focus yourself when you are reading about a particular subject?3
-
Dear fellow ranters, what do you guys do to stay motivated while developing projects?
I've recently figured out that whenever I'm developing on a large project I get side tracked a lot and eventually lose motivation to continue on it. A couple of possible reasons are:
- a jerk faced incompetent client who makes unreasonable requests
- redundancy in features that will hardly ever be used but are a must according to the bullwhack of a boss
- front-end dev on some design which looks like a shit pit of vomit and puss due to having no designer or someone more competent in it
There are plenty of reasons left to be named but those are my biggest.1 -

I suck at front. I lack some front-related stuff in my project and I seriously struggle with all that css.
I'd love if I could find someone to do those small pieces for me, but I really don't feel like paying someone a whole month salary for a two days job.
How can I find devs who could write parts of the code I lack skills to write myself? Do freelancers take on tasks that small? How do I know they won't be stalling the task just to get more €s out of me?
How can I find someone to help me out? How do you guys do that?2 -
I don't know if it's the lack of knowledge or just always being distracted, I try to debug and after wasting half an hour I realize the problem is that I forgot to call the function. Every time! What's wrong with me?

Having one of those days where I'm struggling to focus on the day job, because all I want to do is switch over to any one of my numerous personal projects.
It's easier to ignore and just slog through with work when there are plenty of people around, but if I'm working from home, or it's a day like today with half the office and most of the management out, it's proving to be rather difficult.
How do you all keep on track when you'd rather be working on your own stuff?2 -
One of my big gripes about PyQt5 in particular is lack of info, especially on advanced topics. This includes books. I found this on Amazon today:
Qt5 Python GUI Programming Cookbook: Building responsive and powerful cross-platform applications with PyQt https://amazon.com/dp/B079S4Q9T2/...
It was just published in July. I’m thinking I might buy the Kindle book.
On reviewer complained about lack of info on how to handle child dialogs (after fighting with child dialogs that had their own children and dialogs with threading and all that, I feel you, brother). But the 2 reviews it’s gotten look fairly positive.
I wonder how advanced the book gets. Going to read the sample later.4 -
I'm surprised at the lack of ranting about Tapplock. It's some of the worst dev work I have ever heard of.1

Trying to prototype a credit card-sized handheld emulator with The RasPi Zero and a 1.5" screen. Getting real frustrated with the lack of Wifi on the Zero. 😅 Does anyone know of a good guide to share Internet between a computer and a RasPi Zero over USB?2

I guess the whole "can work from anywhere!" mantra doesn't apply to those looking at junior positions. I wonder how the industry will handle the lack of new hires coming through as more and more seniors demand WFH accommodations.3

Every last 2 hours of the workday my colleague who has plenty of sleep, his headphones on and a very comfortable life, yawns and sighs really loudly and it pisses me off.
It's as if his lack of interest transpires in his breathing.2 -

Blame on ModemManager documenters not specifying any of pre-probing features.
MM is a great project, but I think they lack detailed documentation. Udev is no magic, so don't treat it like snake oil in your documentation!
