When your gf isn't a Dev but still tries to surprise you on your birthday with an HTML cake. But your OCD is killing you because of the mistakes

Hey everyone - tonight we performed a database upgrade and unfortunately there were a few "surprise" breaking changes to the query language we use that weren't caught during testing. Once they were discovered after the upgrade. The queries were corrected within a few minutes. You might have noticed some issues with commenting, voting, etc.
On this note, please let me know if you notice anything suspicious like errors when trying to perform normal actions, or anything at all. I appreciate any reports since it's a bit tricky for us to cover every last part of the app alone, though I think we went through most of it. Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions!21 -
Today I had a reflection with an client and they surprised me with a present. They wanted to thank me for the hard work and effort I made.
Wauw! It just keeps me motivating to work hard and keep my clients happy!4 -

I hate the current state of the web.13 -
My 4yo monster just randomly told me:
"Mommy! One plus two plus three plus four plus five equals fifteen!"
I'm so proud.
And really surprised 🤔
I've been teaching him basic math (adding and subtracting numbers 0-20), but haven't gone beyond two operations / three numbers.10 -
Was working on some a project at a coffee shop with my girlfriend when I got frustrated and exclaimed "God damn why is this method breaking everything". My girlfriend looks up at me and starts in surprise "code can break?".6

My asshole coworkers talking about how programmers without a degree are worth shit and cannot achieve anything in industry besides working from startup to startup.
Well, surprise, I'm sitting right next to them, in the same big company and I don't have ANY higher education at all.
Just because I prefer more hands-on experience than theory stuff doesn't make me worse developer than those bastards. I just learn more from working on something, than from sitting in classroom and taking notes.
Fortunately people at HR and boss also valued my previous experience when they hired me, but now having to work with those guys every day is killing me.13 -
I was registering for a website, and on a whim, I used this as my username:
null'); PRINT('Hello');--
And sure enough, the login system went down. The next day it was still down, so I went to Twitter to tell the people running the site that this was why, but to my surprise, I see them saying they had been hacked.
Based on the timing, I'm pretty sure they're referring to this, but they are saying user info was stolen. *facepalm*
They later said they stored passwords salted with a fixed salt and hashed with fucking md5, at which point I was glad not to have done any more business with them.
How incompetent can these fucking people be?!14 -
There is a group of ladies who work in the accounting department at my job who have made it their mission to decorate the cubicle of whoever has a birthday on a given day. They come in at 6 am on someones birthday and decorate, leaving a mess of balloons and streamers, which is a nice surprise the first time it happens (they do it every year). Well, we in the IT office decided it would be fun to booby trap one of our cubicles so that when our birthday rolled in, they would receive a surprise of their own. So we set up a webcam as a motion detector, and had the computer speakers turned up as loud as possible, so that when motion was detected, the honorable Admiral Akbar would yell "It's A Trap!". We succeeded in scaring the pants off of them, and also annoying them because the sound did not stop until the program was exited, so they had to listen to it the entire time they did their setup. It was priceless xD4

Hey everyone - earlier tonight a surprise change in the Apple subscription API response caused devRant++ members on iOS to temporarily lose their supporter status. All should be restored now, and within the next day supporter start date for all community members in this group will be reset back to the correct start time.
We appreciate all of your support very much and apologize for this issue - I have to do some investigation into how this change happened and if there was any warning.
Thanks everyone!4 -
Had a meeting with my boss earlier. Got yelled at for:
a) Working on a high-priority, externally-committed ticket (digit separators) that i was 85% done with on the Friday afternoon before my vacation instead of jumping to a lower-priority screwdriver ticket that just came in. Even though my boss agreed with me that what I did was exactly what I should have done, it's still bad because I was apparently rude to product by not doing as they asked?
b) Taking too long on that digit separator ticket that amounts to following a gigantic mess of convoluted spaghetti and making a few small changes, and making sure it doesn't break the world because it's all so fucking convoluted and fragile as hell. Let's not even mention my 4-10 hours of mandatory useless meetings every week.
c) Missing something that wasn't even listed in that same ticket -- somehow my fault? -- so I very obviously didn't test my work. Even though specs all passed and QA also tested and signed off on it as working and complete. Clearly half-assed and untested. Product keeps promising/planning UATs and then skipping them, and then has the audacity to complain about it.
d) Not recovering fast enough from burnout and daily mental breakdowns. I can still barely get out of bed and you want me to be super productive? Got it. Guess what? I'm being amazingly productive for my mental health. But my boss, Mr. Happy-go-lucky, thinks depression is dropping your icecream cone on your clean kitchen table, and this three-ton pile of spaghetti is "maybe a little messy, I guess."
So I need to somehow "regain the confidence" of both him and product because I'm taking awhile on difficult tickets (surprise), while having these ridiculous breakdowns (surprise), and because I don't fix things that aren't even listed in the fucking tickets (fucking surprise) -- and worse, that the lack of information is somehow entirely. my. fault. (surprise fucking surprise)

My girlfriend sent me out to buy basil for soup... Had no choice so I went. At the mall entrance, 4 interactive digital signage panels. Used one to check for the supermarket's locations and saw that a display corner was flickering. The app was grabbing the full screen but had a bug with the windows' task bar. Messed with it a couple of minutes, stopped app and... Surprise! Windows 7, logged as administrator... I had to go to disk management... I really had to.
PS: gf said that I should be ashamed of what I did...8 -
I spent three hours coding some algorithm and then looked it up on Stack Overflow out of curiosity. Big surprise. Someone did the exact same thing but more effeciently, and had all the code in his answer on SO.

The Java course at our Uni requires us to do an end semester project - A Java App with Swing for GUI and some Multithreading code in it.
They asked us to upload the code to drive. I was bored and was checking out my friends' projects.
The code below is what I saw in one of the projects. They have simply called a thread with an empty run method because the project required to use multithreading concepts, wtf.
But then, It is no surprise to me cause these are the people who memorize code and vomit code for marks.
I am worried that people are going to be awarded degrees and called software engineers.
God save the software industry!24 -
So I walk to work and pass this sign for a place called helloworld experts in everywhere.

Naming contest:
These two 'new' servers need hostnames.
Names must be within the following constraints:
* Names must be female
* Names must be pronouncable and writable in ASCII standard set of characters.
* Names are preferred to reference to duo's, like sisters, twins, dynamic duo's like chip and dale, but female.
Previous servers were name 'tairu' & 'mairu' (heroic age) and 'karen' & 'tsukihi' (nisemonogatori)
Let's see if the devrant community can surprise me.

I used PHPMailer to send emails to a client's website user. SMTP host is smtp.gmail.com.
web was hosted on Bluehost. I found out that mailer was not working. I enabled verbose output and to my surprise I found out that Bluehost was intercepting my mail and responding with
220-We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited, 220 and/or bulk e-mail
when i was explicitly using smtp.gmail.com. Not only they were intercepting but also They were trying my credentials against its own smtp server and then showing me that authentication failed.
When i contacted chat they asked me to tell last 4 characters of Bluehost account password to verify ownership.
Dude do they have passwords in plaintext.🤔5 -
A month ago I had some medical tests, the next morning, the clinic's send a email with my results. Oh surprise, unbelievable security flaws. They sent me a link without any kind of authentication, token, or security. I looked at my results, and by entering consecutive and random numbers I was able to download a lot of results and folders of other patients. I wrote an email to the clinic informing them of this situation and their response was "Thank you". Today I have accessed the link and the error is still present. I am going to notify higher health authorities.11

Surprise surprise, that unrealistic deadline you set even when the engineering team told you that it wasn't going to work has backfired! Maybe you wouldn't be so stressed if you learnt to listen? It's a pretty basic skill, or at least I thought so.

In the begining of time, when The Company was small and The Data could fit in some fucking excel sheets, Those Who Came Before implemented some java tool to issue invoices, notify customers and clear received payments.
Then came the Time Of The Great Expanse, when The Company grew to unthinkable levels. Headcount increased with each passing day, and The Data shows that everything was going great!
But when the future seemed bright, came The Stall-Out. The days when The Company could not expand as fast as it did before. And Those Who Came Before left, abandoning their Undocumented Java Tool to its own luck.
Those who came after knew nothing of the inner workings of the Undocumented Java Tool. They knew only that the magical Jar would take a couple fucking excel spreadsheets and spit out reports and send emails like magic.
And those were The Dark Days.
In the darkness, The Data grew to be a monster. Soon a fucking excel spreadsheet could not hold The Data contained any longer. Those Who Came After, fearing the wrath of The Undocumented Java Tool, dared not mess with its code. Instead, they fucking cut away the lowest volume transactions from the fucking input spreadsheet, and left the company to report the unbilled invoices as "surprise losses". Fucking script kiddies, were Those Who Came After.
Then, at The Darkest of Days (literally, Dec 21st), marched into the project The Six Witchers, who fear not the Demon of Refactoring.
This story is still unfolding. Will The Six Witchers manage to unravel the mysteries of The Undocumented Java Tool? Will they be able to reverse engineer the fucking black box, and scale it's magic into a modern application?
Will they decrease revenue forecasting error by at least 2% in a single strike?
Only the future will tell.16 -
How the fuck am I expected to salvage a fucking project that has been handed down to me with.
- No fucking clear architecture
- No fucking documentation
- Fucking shitty ass code base with no fucking coding standards
- The previous team was fucking learning a whole fucking new technology stack *Not fucking kidding* making fucking mistakes left and right
- No code reviews
- Mixing fucking local and cloud enviroment together
- No fucking testing
- Feature that were supposed to be implemented and are not working
- No configuration all the stuff are hard coded
- Full responsiblity for the whole stack
- Only one other guy with me
- And this fucking project has been delayed for a year
- MUCH FUCKING MORE WHERE THAT CAME FROM
Like what the fuck am I expected to do? I took the job thinking that people knew what the fuck they were doing and surprise surprise that was a fucking bust.
the problem is also I am the junior and these fucking people have more experience than me, what the fuck happened to over seeing people's work, PM doesnt give a shit, developers dont give a shit nobody gives a shit.
But when I got this surprise surprise now everyone is interested in finishing the project

Hey look, npm broke my project again. Surprise!
Code and dependencies on my local machine, all untouched for a couple of weeks, no longer works. I've no idea how it even managed that.
Oh, and `npm update` crashes.
eventually solved by upgrading npm and running `npm update --depth 500` because some arbitrary child dependencies changed without updating the parent packages, ofc. on my local machine. without me having run `npm update` for about a month.
because of course that makes sense.
Second time in two months, too.
isn't npm great?3 -

I just saw this video about car insurance and how they're essentially legal fraud. As I'm looking to get a driver's license and get myself a secondhand car, I looked what the costs actually are for mandatory car insurance that gets people so worked up...

Disclaimer: searching for a self hosted Spotify alternative but haven't found one yet so suggestions are very welcome!
I really don't get how spotify's music algorithms or whatever the fuck you'd call those (you get what I mean) work.
- Whenever I click on the button which should make a song not appear in my daily mix anymore, I hear it again within a fucking day.
- how the fuck does the getting you new songs which you might like work?! I'm a huge rawstyle fan and mostly listen to, surprise surprise, rawstyle.
Then why in the living fuck keeps Spotify coming up with euphoric/melodic hardstyle tracks?! I like those sometimes but only *sometimes*.
More and more often I have to skip through 20-30+ songs to get one raw song instead of a fucking euphoric one.
Replies from their support are non existent.
It's getting so fucking annoying.17 -
I'm 4 days into my new job, and so far I am absolutely loving it. Here's my setup. Yes, they gave me 3 monitors plus a laptop, so my setup has 5 screens! Now I can die happy :D
Definitely worth noting as well, since it caught me by surprise - the company-supplied laptop is a powerhouse. Today was a day at work that I felt like I made a significant contribution. It was not a lot of code. Actually it was a difference of 3 characters.
I am developing an industrial server so that my employer can provide access to their machines to enterprise industrial systems. You know, the big boys toys. Probably in fucking java...
Anyway, I am putting this server on an embedded system. So naturally you want to see how much serving a server can serve. In this case the device in more processor starved than memory starved. So I bumped up the speed of the serving from 1000mS to 100mS per sample. This caused the processor to jump from 8% of one core (as read from top) to 70%. Okay, 10x more sampling then 10x approx cpu usage. That is good. I know some basic metrics for a certain amount of data for a couple of different sampling rates.
Now, I realized this really was not that much activity for this processor. I mean, it didn't seem to me that it "took much" to see a large increase of processor usage. So I started wondering about another process on the system that was eating 60 to 70 % all the time. I know it updated a screen that showed some not often needed data from its display among controlling things. Most of the time it will be in a cabinet hidden from the world. I started looking at this code and figured out where the display code was being called.
This is where it gets interesting. I didn't write this code. Another really good programmer I work with wrote this. It also seemed to be pretty standard approach. It had a timer that fired an event every 50mS. This is 20 times per second. So 20 fps if you will. I thought, What would happen if I changed this to 250mS? So I did. It dropped the processor usage to 15%! WTF?! I showed another programmer: WTF?! I showed the guy who wrote it: WTF?! I asked what does it do? He said all it does it update the display. He said: Lets take to 1000mS! I was hesitant, but okay. It dropped to 5%!
What is funny is several people all said: This is running kinda hot. It really shouldn't be this hot.
Don't assume, if you have a hunch, play with it if its safe to do so. You might just shave off 55 to 60 % cpu usage on your system.
So the code I ended up changing: "50" to "1000".16 -

Yeah, sure Fortune. Please tell me more about my personal finances that you know nothing about.
The longer this drags on the more it feels like a war against the proletariat.
I also feel like the aristocracy is building a terrible financial charade that will be the toast of the town by November. They REALLY want to make sure the labor doesn't see any rise in wages. Can't have those peons thinking they can get ahead, right?

I have absolutely nothing wrong with the desire to make money. In fact, I'm willing to bet it's inspired some revolutionary technology to be made.
But for fuck sake YouTube, im not some 20ish year old Instagram personality with 15k followers that posts pictures in front of expensive cars at the car dealership or at some hotel you're just touring with the word "entrepreneur" in my bio.
I don't give a flying fuck about trying to make "easy" money. Stop showing ads of those cancerous "I'mma show you how to make easy money. New job surprise: I will inherit a 900k lines of php code from a contractor dev shop. It is the company erp web app.
It has no version control, tests, architecture or configuration management of any kind.
There are just 1800 bug ridden files with almost no comments in a directory with lots of code duplication.
Also just learned that the contractor was paid a lot monthly for over 2 years for this monster.
I will need a raise quickly. At least management understands that I will need a couple of months to get a semblance of order in this madness.
And to you contractor I have your address and i'll try to restraint myself from vandalizing your house but I can't make any promises.
And fellow developers send help or beers or come and join me to teach this bastard a lesson.5 -
Currently trying to convert a Python (2.7) framework into its C++. Surprise, surprise, the C++ APIs are also all deprecated
"Here's a guide to creating your project using our non-deprecated framework, except it will still call our deprecated methods under the hood"
Additionally, I had to make this framework work with OpenCV, which was complaining about my C++ framework being deprecated and not being able to link to missing modules (which were already installed).
All of this has eaten 4 hours of my life, I could as well throw the laptop out of the window

Sort of a meeting, sort of an informal interview, I've dialled in from the home office and my audio setup includes a standalone mic and some noise cancelling headphones. It's going really really well when all of a sudden I see something in the preview window of my webcam feed.
Behind me, looking very concerned and confused is my 73 year old Nanna who'd decided to pop in and see me as she was passing by.
It's common for me to keep the front door locked, but my Nanna has an emergency key and knows I don't always hear a knock at the door, so let herself in.
So she's now in the house, calling out to me and she can hear me talking, so follows the sound of my voice thinking maybe I'm on the phone. Walks right into the office, where the door is behind me, eventually puts two and two together to work out that I can't hear her and finally sees herself on my monitor. She panics and goes to hide in the corner of my office, almost underneath my workbench because she's old and doesn't know where she would or wouldn't be visible from.
The rest of the meeting went really well, but overran by at least half an hour. Meanwhile I can see my poor Nanna hiding away in my peripheral vision.3 -
So both my and my friends documentation for this project got rejected. It wasn't much of a surprise as we both have the same teacher who is very very strict on documentation. We are discussing all the documentation stuffs when he drops this:
Going to Africa and giving all children water is easier than getting this fucking documentation approved.
I fucking lost it xD. Okay, a bit harsh maybe but at least you get the idea.3 -
My friend left his project work and I undertook it. Contained a mysterious folder named " open only when you get frustrated".
When the time came, I opened it and saw a text file along with a folder. The text file says, "Blame the predecessor for the code", and the folder was named, "open only when you get frustrated next time".
When the time came, it contained yet another text file along with a folder. The text file says, "Blame the project owner", and the folder says, "open only when you seriously get frustrated".
Finally, the time came, the folder contained only one text file, and to my surprise, there wasn't any folder. The text file says, "TIME TO MAKE THREE NESTED FOLDERS".1 -
I just discovered that a couple rants here talked about an open source project of mine 😍
Also, they were !rants 😄
Thanks for appreciating it! 😄5 -
Anyone else working from home today? Love that my current workplace has this option.
My previous workplace would have laughed in your face if you even suggested of working at home! Only our bosses were allowed to work from home (surprise surprise?)4 -
This is my bottom drawer. That's +150 packets of honey from the cafe downstairs. I've been slowly collecting them since I started working here. I'm leaving soon and thinking about leaving them so the next dev can have a pleasant surprise 😂8

How do you deal with open space offices?
I find it quite difficult to focus, the constant chatting, the constant questions, phone ringing, surprise meeting, more question, arrays of interruptions and questions again. I believe I would be a lot more productive if left alone in the total, undiscontinued silence.
Have you found your escape, your zen, your inner focus? Please share, I need some ideas16 -
I'm the kind of dev who is willing to overtime because I enjoy coding. But my previous boss (owner) abused this opportunity and thinks he can call me whenever he wants. After my shift, he would be surprise if I go home immediately and ask If I will be working at home. He even called me while I'm in vacation (he wants me to work on a new feature). I already filed my leave 3mos before that. He is very manipulative to the other devs and doesn't even trust his managers.3

Was wondering when the stickers would come in when low and behold, my wife and I were packing up for a move and the stickers were just there in my sock/underwear drawer...
Confused as all hell I ask my wife, "Did you put these here?"
Turns out the letter arrived ages ago and she wanted to surprise me by opening it up and hide the stickers!
I mostly wear sandals so I had no need for socks and never moved them around to find the stickers underneath...
So here they are and thank you @dfox and @trogus for making this awesome community!!!devrant big thank you! _stickers arrived @trogus wife is a cruel prankster apparently forever ago @dfox6 -

Stay curious and open-minded. If you hear something new take some 5-10 min and Google it. You will surprise much people even if you know just basics.
And if you're a fast learner, be aware, some people will be intimidated and try to oust you. But stay positive! -
I could not do anything else. Physics, Chemistry, Biology didn't interest me.
Tried competitve programming, failed miserably.
Tried app dev and server dev, they surprise me with their awesomeness everyday :D1 -
I got an interview with a big multinational software company as a senior dev - the kind of place I never thought I would be privileged or knowledgeable enough to work for and wasnt expecting to get In to...
I aced it. They gave me an offer but - FOR DEVOPS 😬
basically my skills fit in perfectly with the server/ scaling issues they have and are far more valuable there. I know they do, I also know I can fix the issue and will have alot of fun coding it - I just dont think I want to monitor it or anything else.
I mean I do devops stuff all the time in aid of anything I code but their stack is a full time job- im scared that once the toolchain is automated ill be pulled towards sys admin like duties and lose touch with my craft... what do you guys think? Anyone shifted from dev to devops?9 -
The recruiters have finally found me on LinkedIn!
And in a surprise turn of events suggested a job I'm actually qualified for... 😮3 -
Got this announcement that Manjaro is moving to GitLab. It doesn't mean much but it wouldn't surprise me if most Linux distributions start making the switch.3

Just me getting angry about the reaction after the Cambridge-scandal?
The news are spamming it every hour, and suddenly everyone is "well aware about my privacy" and deleting their Facebooks.
I mean, as if we didn't know this all along. O-fucking-course your data is stored and sold for adds, you accepted it when you wanted to "see which celebrity you are alike"!
I walk around and talk about privacy with people kinda a lot, and nobody seems to care. And then this happens, and people are going nuts. Waow, what a surprise!
Haha, have a nice evening DevRanters! ;) (20:55)@swe15 -

I became my school's computer club president just last year. Although it's a computer club most of them aren't specially good in computer. We learn Photoshop for mostbof the time. So I decided to bring in unity3d and teach it myself.
I did managed to teach them in a slow pace. What came to me as a surprise is that I inspired another student to held unity class in school to teach other students game making .
Sometimes little thing we do may influence people in a big way we don't know.2 -

That feeling of regret after you get a not-so-good grade in a class because you were too advanced in the subject matter. "I already know java I don't need to go to class *miss surprise quiz and class work*" <- me in csc 101 and 102 (retook both). Moral of the story: don't learn too fast on your own if you're in school if you get bored really easily.3

Im so fucking disgusted with the paternalistic superiority complex so many techbros have.
They see themselves as the new elite priestly class, protectors of the Sacred Tech, convinced everyone else is too stupid to handle themselves.
The answer to stupidity is not to keep people in the dark, enforcing only more stupidity. What a dismal worldview. Treat other humans with respect and dignity and they will surprise you.6 -
The debugging process is often complicated.
There are often many factors involved in troubleshooting an error, but usually I have a hunch.
Sometimes I'll ignore my hunch and try other, smaller fixes first. This will irritate me for a while until I actually go after my hunch, run the program, and INSTANTLY everything works again.
Found myself relating that to real life today when I had a slight belly ache and eventually decided to take a massive shit and INSTANTLY felt better. The relief was so quick that I actually looked up and paused in surprise.3 -

As an American the first surprise I got in Berlin is that Burger King serves beer. Never seen that ever back home. (Okay I was in Denmark on a plane but it still was cool darn it)
I've been thinking for the year about working here, but now that I showed up the idea is scaring me a bit. Go figure. 😭
I want to see more of Germany beyond Berlin, what do our German natives like here?9 -
Ahh boy, uni sure is fun...
I missed my comp-sci class last week when we got a project assigned. No big deal, right? We have an online student portal where teachers can post assignments for everyone to see. I'm sure it's in there.
It's not.
Okay. How about the syllabus? Professors are supposed to create a weekly schedule for students to follow, it's probably in there, right?
Nope. Nothing.
Alright... I guess I'll email him. At this point about two classes have passed and I haven't heard anything in class, so I fire off a quick email to the professor asking for the details to be posted to the web portal so I at least have some idea of what I'm doing.
Surprise surprise, I get a response in about an hour.
"I'm not posting anything online. You should have been in class. Talk to a classmate."
*sigh*
So, from what I can gather from my classmates, we have to design a game using python. It might be a quiz, maybe. We have a week.
Are you fucking kidding me? Is it really that hard to take 20 minutes to type up a few requirements so your students at least know what you're grading for? I barely have any idea of what you even want, and from the three people I talked to it wasn't very clear even when he explained it in class. Post your assignments online, asshole!7 -

My terminal (Tilix) didn't have a header bar for a quite a while now. I had grown to live without it even though I missed looking at the terminal title to figure where I was.
Today I my hand accidentally hit F11 and I was in for a surprise. I actually exclaimed aloud in the office.
I waited to test, confirm and verify that the header bar itself was not a bug before I facepalmed myself -
i love to actually understand how the code works! like you're writing some text and surprise - it does magic? no. it goes deeper than that. and when you understand those concepts, coding becomes more serious/fun and interesting1

Not having any testers.
Management assuming we devs can test our enterprise app using only auotmation tests.
Big surprise coming when we release.1 -
My boss gave us a spring framework assignment as a training. I did it in half the time required while my colleague was struggling with it. later on he asked me for help so i came to his desk and to my surprise here i am looking at my code and he managed to f*** it up. I don't mind taking my code but have the decency to say so. P.S: he accessed my pc over LAN from the run command4

I opened a pdf in macOS today.
It was opened in the default pdf viewer and I could scroll through the pages. Then I accidentally dragged one of the pages in the left area where all of the pages are shown as thumbnails. I was surprised that I can do that, because surely I was just viewing the pdf. Like in a pdf viewer. Like read only.
Imagine my surprise when I closed the pdf, opened it again and found the pages in the wrong order!
It freaking autosaved my accidental drag and drop in the standard app that opens pdfs!
Who the hell thought it was a good idea to do that? That’s insane!5 -

Today I went into the 1 holer restroom right after my boss. I braced myself for the worse as the toilet seat was down. To my surprise it smelled like bubble gum. So my boss's shit doesn't stink, it smells like bubble gum.

Today was my last piano lesson with my jazzy teacher. I'll miss him. He teached me a lot and I nearly always looked forward to piano lessons.
I brought wine (Mosel life) and 5 songs - 3 jazz classics (It don't mean a Thing, Take Five and Fly me to the Moon), his favorite from the Daft Punk album I borrowed him and one of his own songs (surprise) and we improvised on these songs. I was a little nervous.. or sad but I didn't play as good as yesterday eve. He asked me why I never did that before. He'd love to practice improvising with me because I suck at reading sheet music (I said that and I'm a lazy learner with sheets).

There are these type of costumers who think they better know how much time it takes to do something then me. They think because they can do a little SQL and VBA, they know what it takes to work on an E-Commerce Plattform. What’s wrong with this shitheads? How about some respect?
They tried to compare the integration of an Instagram wall with integrating automated product variations. They then proposed some plugins that i should use. Surprise the plugins are completely useless for the usecase.
I just want to hit them with their dumbness. In the face. Very hard.1 -

When smaller web sweatshops try to under-quote to get your client to jump ship.
Boy, oh boy! They are in for a nasty surprise. Good luck fellas!3 -
Fucking outlook, can't even render simple html.
Our company wanted a custom newsletter to send to our clients. Before vacation I dropped a few guidelines to our designer, how our newsletter should look. 640px width, common fonts for everyone to render properly, stuff like that. To my fucking surprise they managed to create the most designed newsletter I've seen. Custom font, custom letter sizings, negative row gaps, pixel to pixel image locations. After writing custom html for it and managing to get all perfectly in 3 hours, to my surprise I found out, that outlook is broken. FML
Now everything must be redesigned and simplified, just because I was naive enough to think, that all mail clients manage to render simple HTML...11 -
Always thought writing free code is devaluing yourself. So, the stories coming out how the most popular used libraries' dev/maintainer having no income, complaining afterwards doesn't surprise me.
Why do people devalue themselves? I have no idea.6 -
You know what I really like? When apps override the scrolling behaviour...
Yes, I really want you to disable my scrolling settings and enforce your own goddamn scrolling logic, it's so great to have shit I'm used to being forcibly removed from me.
Biggest surprise is the latest place I've seen this is Unreal Engine :O Scrolling the news in the launcher is slow as fuck.2 -
Today my boss decided that he wanted to manage his project properly. After a year he gave us deadlines (we still had deadlines but usually we did not know them). I open the xlsx file (yeah... xlsx) and I see the date of today as deadline. Well, at least it won't be a surprise this time.2
-
What idiot uses 0 for a success response!!! Integrating with a 3rd party I found a bug in our code that uses the default value for an int when the external server can't be reached.
As it happens 0 is the default integer in most languages so no surprise when our system accepted the 3rd party as a success when it blew up 😒4 -
A school-related rant:
Went to my school yesterday to get my computer science degree, aaaand....
Surprise! You got a degree in Liberal Arts! Even though when you graduated, it said Computer Science and thought they already fixed the problem about me graduating with Liberal Arts instead of CS! Nope! Still Liberal Arts!
Sigh, fuck that school. I'm sure when my wife finds out about it, she'll definitely flip out and make me fix this, because she also spent time for me to finish school and get a stupid degree. I just don't wanna deal with it anymore and instead keep learning on my own, make projects, and be so good that employers can't ignore me.7 -
was jobless for some time but in those days I was seeing this smoking-hot mulata friend of a cousin. After several visits and "movie days" I asked her out for dinner which, to my surprise because I'm a nobody, she accepted.
we went out and eat some tacos in her favorite soda around the corner. And we went out a second time IIRC.
needless to say, the money that paid that modest dinner with such amazona was earned working as a freelancer in PeoplePerHour doing junior-level stuff in Python, I learned the language during my four last years in high school.
ah, how I miss that girl 🤷♂️.4 -
I get the whole anger at robinhood and the stock market, I really do.
But on the other hand - what did you expect? A bunch of people on Reddit could *genuinely* cause hedge funds to lose billions without them pulling strings to fight back?! They don't care if it's illegal or immoral. They know the worst they'll get is a fine that's way, way less than they stand to make.
Don't get me wrong, the anger here is justified completely. The surprise however, that's really not.12 -
As expected, I take a single day of PTO and I get a whole bunch of emails about stakeholders needing help and requests for website improvements. I have 14 days of PTO that I have to use in the next two months, so stakeholders gonna get a rude surprise when they see my out of office response almost every other day.1

I have come up with a weight loss program with developers in mind. It involves scaring the crap out of your fellow developers while they work and play on a computer. When you are scared you expend a bunch of energy reacting to the scare. Any number of scare tactics can be employed. They can be surprise (jumping out), conversational (your fired type), screamer videos or programs, etc. The type of scare is up to you. Get creative.
I am calling this program: Boo-Lean
You can choose to use this program or not.5 -

But hey, I'm not complaining! 😁4 -
so i have to practice on codewars for homework and my code.. doesnt work! what a surprise. i was wondering if anyone could tell me whats wrong since yall are professionals. its probably a stupid mistake. this is the challenge: Implement a method that excepts three integer values a, b, c. The message return true if a triangle can be built with the sides of given length and false in any other case.13

Through my previous employer's complete incompetence and lack of a spine I had to work two days during my last holiday. He'd managed to approve time off for all three of the remaining staff at the same time, so as a compromise, our six day work week was covered by all of us for two days a piece. Sooo maybe not technically not coding on holiday?
The business could just about scrape by on one staff member, so the boss should've allowed the holidays to those who requested it first (myself and one other), but that would've caused problems with the third person who he just so happened to be related to.
I was made redundant a few months later. The company is in the a lot of trouble and on its last legs, but the one member of staff who kept their job was the least capable and, surprise surprise, the relative.2 -

I left my previous job to concentrate on finishing up University. I've been working full-time at another company and doing freelance on the side since then.
Not too long ago I saw my old boss and he told me i shoud apply back at the company and get back working Front-end.
I went to check the job posting. To my surprise, the qualifications they were asking were completely different than what I was doing at the time.
I'm no longer qualified for my old job despite being more experienced and still learning. -

I called him 2 days ago i said that i’ll upload the website for confirmation of the design in a few days, he says ok. I get around to it, developed the frontend on localhost, put it on my server for him to approve and sent him the link. He said something about a specific photo not being grayscale or whatever - I don’t even have any info for the site that he sent, got confused, ok.. I go to his old website to get some information onto the new one, surprise surprise a new website that I don’t have anything to do with appeared. Wtf, check the ftp - was uploaded 5 days ago. Guys at work just found out that they can see all the commits in a repo that they have to change stuff in on a daily basis..

!rant, need advice
I have no idea where to start with freelancing.
My girlfriend's been wanting to get some stuff but due to some issues hasn't been able to and has been extremely hesitant about bringing the topic up.
So to surprise her, I decided it'd be nice if I could freelance on the side and rake up some money so she can get the things she wants and I can spoil her (she's been through things and honestly deserves it).
So if you guys have any suggestions on where to start freelancing, that'd be great. I can do graphics and web design and just set up an anonymous Fiverr account but never had any luck with it.6 -
Lady comes over to my cube and stands silently until I notice her in the mirror. She cheerfully asks that I help her reset her password.
Okay...one, I'm buried up to my balls in work that needs to be done, and here she is camping, expecting me to feel a disturbance in The Force to help on her whim, when our company has an issue system for shit like this. 👊
Two, I'm 👏 a 👏 developer 👏! My sign says Software Engineer on it, which might give some context as to why she forgot her password.
Look, I was nice to her. But it seems like I'm getting more and more phone calls and surprise visits lately from people that I shouldn't be.1 -
You had two additional weeks to improve your project.
You could research different marketing strategies to increase revenue. You could add some new features to attract more users and ensure your existing users are satisfied. Finally, you could optimize performance to make your UI quicker.
But you’ve chosen to write some unit tests. Now that two weeks are gone, you got no new features, no performance improvements and no new marketing strategies while your competitors got them all.
Tests caught obvious bugs that can even be caught by static typing, but you by definition couldn’t write tests that’ll catch unpredictable bugs, so they are still present.
After six months you realize you have to rewrite a major part of your project because your project (surprise-surprise) has to chase market needs to stay relevant. Your tests are thrown into trash along with your old code.
“Having trouble with code quality? Write a lot of tests. And I mean a *lot*. Test every file in isolation. Mock as many imports as possible.
When you're done, your code will still be bad, but now your tests will make sure it's impossible to improve anything in any meaningful way.”12 -

More tales from University Tech Support:
Haven't been able to get ahold of this staff member for weeks to do required maintenance. Emails, VMs, surprise office visits, she's never anywhere to be found.
Finally my boss emails her with the subject line "Free Money", and gives her some sass in the email about calling IT back.
Yeah, she responded in minutes...2 -
Hey everyone, today i got the very good surprise to receive a package i was waiting a little late but I'm happy to show you my new keyboard! So past week our Web Design teacher proposed a little HTML5 project for the class to make. I have been since that day until today trying to implement an OBLIGATORY drag and drop functionality to reorder a list and back it up to localStorage, but for some reason it wont work as it should. But what a surprise, today I arrive at class and he has changed the specifications of the project, allowing us to not implement that, or implement it differently. That singlehandledly made my day.2

Totally not dev related but had to ait this somewhere... Yesterday my parents came to me and asked what the best way would be for them to have some space cake...
Totally caught me by surprise! Was so surprised I couldn't utter actual sentences for a solid 5 minutes...8 -
When your code is accepted after you forgot about the comment about your boss being a Tw*t... Surprise.1

Nice surprise today hiding in my snail-mail-box, among bills and publicity. It took a couple of months from NYC to Cheeseland, but the cute stickers are finally here!
Thanks, devRant!2 -
So this happened at a government organised 24 hour Hackathon. We had to store documents uploaded from the front end. Now we’ve been trying for a very log time but everything failed (yeah we had a crappy front end guy). Then all hell broke loose when the our team leader in hi sleep deprived state deleted our git repository while I wondered why my pushes were throwing a 404. When hell felt near we came up with the solution to encode the documents in base64 and store it in the database since we only had to show a demo😂.
Sadly enough, WE LOST. Although in retrospect it comes as no surprise.2 -
Friday, forced deploy day for last & current months work. Been stockpiled due to holiday.
Yesterday boss demoed the product to clients so they expect to test today.
Early o'fuck this morning, a coworker managed to drop all secrets and env vars from CI pipelines and trigger a deploy leaving production broken...
It's gonna be a long and busy Friday... -
My friend has a little problem. He wants to clearly reinstall windows, format partitions and install it again. I was very surprise with question: "Do I have to remove Windows folder and remove everything else?"1
-
Surprise surprise, Atari is gonna be back in the hardware business with a new gaming console...
https://www.ataribox.com/1 -
So I've been back to work for 2 weeks after going on a holiday. Getting back into the flow of things was easy, but seeing the status of the project that I am a part of, and seeing the kind of implementation work that my co-workers has done, it's kind of a no surprise.
So the past 2 weeks I've been completing features that I left my co-workers to finish, but didn't. And rewriting other features that they worked on, but does not meet the specifications.
Will I ever be able to work with reliable/competent developers? -
Cont. on this: https://devrant.com/rants/2991618/...
So, after I gave them my estimates and pricing and whatnot, they msgd me back a few days ago.. guess what?
"We're going to go with the dude making that [shitty] WP site for free, we'll be in contact again when we need the online store" ... No surprise. Somehow it just baffles me how people think devs' work is nigh on free even though the avg salary of a dev is known to be quite high. Like how can you not count 1+1=2? -
Work hard. Seriously. If its your first job, prepare yourself for 1 year in front. Learn programming, repeat, repeat more, fail, gain expertise. Surprise them with everything you do, blow the others out of the water with your knowledge.

New Office gave me an admin protected machine with limited access to users, but I have successful installed Android studio and sdk for flutter learning and Node setup for side hustles.
**Admins would give pikachu surprise face if they find out.3 -
How can Javascript, one of the MOST WIDELY used and MATURE languages with A MILLION CANCEROUS FRAMEWORKS, NOT have a basic collections class? Are data structures not important in Javascript?
I've been struggling all night trying to get Sets working - surprise, they're utterly useless in Javascript cause you can't define the set comparator.
I just lost it when I found out THERE ISN'T EVEN A QUEUE. WT-ACTUAL-F15 -
I'm founding a company on machine learning with two others where one of them is an economics guy who decided his work was boring so he did his PhD in Engineering.
He started about three months ago to also invest some time in computer and dev stuff.
As a free software and Linux guy I wanted to get clear about stuff like open sour...
Economics guy: "We should definitely make all of that stuff open source to give back to the community."
Me: I love you. I truely do.
The same thing happened with security, svn etc.
I mean... Well... So unexpected! o.O2 -
ok,. so i've been into job hunting for a while and i found this rather attractive posting with reasonable salary and work hours, it clearly states "PHP Backend Programming With Laravel", so i applied, a day later, i got in contact with the employer via skype, and to my surprise, the employer told me that skills in c# is required because the job position is for a senior c# dev... smh2

Project deadline next 2 months but they didn't try to communicate with devs. Surprise mothaaa ffffff!!!

I got a lot of likes for my first two rants, A huge surprise to me, especially cause they were puns.
I guess I really got with the program.3 -
I normally have my Windows desktop and my Kubuntu laptop, but I’m on “holiday”, and I only brought my laptop. “I can write a simple research proposal on it, right?”, I thought. Ahahahaha, no. Turns out Libre Office and Mendeley are fucking useless on Linux. I had to give up and use my mum’s prehistoric Windows 7 laptop... Also Snap is “great” in theory (basically a Linux setup.exe, rendering packages pointless), but nothing I’ve tried worked so far. Docker can’t figure its permissions out, Chromium cursors break, and Mendeley doesn’t even detect Libre Office as installed. What a fucking shit show. I love Linux for dev, but no fucking surprise that no sane human being uses it for everyday tasks.16

Other build tools:
Here is a plugin, use it . Be done.
Scala Build Tool aka SBT:
Build your own plugin.
Everything is scala...
You can create by the way funny endless loops when using the wrong syntax - yet it might compile successfully. And then when you load the plugin, it works. Till it is evaluated - lazy evaluation for the fun.
Error messages are at best cryptic.
*If* you manage to get a working plugin and *if* it runs...
Surprise. Surprise.
You might need to parse the log output of SBT.
Another funny surprise: Log output isn't configurable. You can configure the log level. That's it.
So after a lot of pain stakingly putting together a fucking shitty plugin, you can now grind the rest of your brain with ...
sed.
Cause yeah. You can now use regex to parse an sbt build log and extract the necessary information.
:)
...
So....
Are we there?
Mwahahahhaa.
Only if you haven't forgotten to either disable colored output for SBT... Or take an extra mile with e.g. less -R.
Otherwise you have ASCII control characters in your file. :-)
After getting that shit to work, you now have finally a parseable build log.
Just took days instead of hours.
But that's SBT. :-)6 -
Surprise! I get to launch a website tonight into the wee hours of the morning. Aaaaaand I don't have the registrar password. Gonna be a long night, folks.

Fun story, I keep discovering new ways of being shameless.
I had been once caught of basically giving my assignment (not one of my brightest moments)for a course to a friend and surprise surprise the instructor did take disciplinary action but he was a bit pissed so infact, he called out for a viva for all the assignments.
The Vivas went fine but immediately after I was done I was like "sir so I'm having a bit of trouble in this next assignment I was wondering if you could help me out" 😂 I have no clue what I was thinking nor was I proud of that.
Kudos to the instructor tho who calmly responded and actually helped me out with it.
Also due to some policy the action could not go ahead so yea guess things turned out fine. Im now hoping to see if he can keep me as an RA. Again, yes why am I like this. Good instructor tho. -
I've just published my first npm module/package .For so long, I was feeling bad that I've never shared any code via npm before. So, today I thought of sharing any old code that myabe some people would find useful . I did (also had to add some lines and remove alot of lines to keep it clean and simple) and for my surprise, in few hours it got 45 downloads! although it's angular (1 not 2)3
-
I thought my project would break on an edge case and I would have to spend 2-3 hours rewriting some code to fix it. Turns out I had already thought about that edge case when implementing that functionality (which was like 6 months ago), so nothing breaks and I don't have to fix anything. What a pleasant surprise!3
-
Naaarf
Refactoring the whole day.
Someone who prefers while(list(...) = each(...)) or for($x=0; $x < count($array); $x++) wrote the following code, too.
if ($indexed == null || $indexed == "0" && $row[$x]["indexed"] == 0 || $indexed == "1" && $row[$x]["indexed"] == 1) ....
It's buggy. Why does this not surprise me?
This stuff. Whole day.
My brain feels foggy.5 -
So Docker is pretty amazing, but I'm finding myself immensely frustrated at all the stupid shit devs do with their Dockfiles and stacks. Like the surprise of finding out Jenkins clients aren't setup for SSH or stacks opening up 5 public ports when all they really need are a bunch of private ports. Or how Jenkins deployments expect crazy tags so I have to add some really stupid tags to my own nodes.
How is it so hard to comprehend Docker for devs? It's so easy that I'm in utter bliss when I stop trying to use 3rd party stacks.1 -
Went to my favorite scrapyard but it's hard to catch my friends here (I worked here for 6 months, learned a lotttttt). I always leave a surprise. This time I also brought aluminum to give so I much hide the bag and I'm placing a ridle.. This bottle in the front door. Let's see if they get it3

So got into a small debate (actually a civil one, surprise surprise) about the final project for a class. Basically the final project involves a team of 3-4 coders making a website for an actual client that either they find or provided by the professor.
The exact point of conflict was that the work is pro bono. The student argued that the work should be paid since after all, real work, real client. My argument is that because the clients don’t exactly choose the designers (or have little to no knowledge of most of their work) there will be high variance in quality and contract work would cause more conflict if done in class.
So just wondering, what do people think about this? Logistical issues aside (earning money for technically school property/ownership and money for learning essentially)6 -
Was inspired by current technology stack...

I'm given a simple assignment to update email templates. I tot it would be a breeze.
It turn out SURPRISE! After the updating of template is done. I deploy the code in the development environment.
I tried to access the email template like how the user will see to verify all is good. It turn out i am facing error.
So uhh ok, i went to check the logs to see what the hiccups. It turn out that a table is missing. But this is production code. So my question how the hell did the production environment has the table but dev don't.....6 -
Hey everyone, have you ever had a creative block right when you're up against a tight deadline? It's like your brain just decides to take a vacation at the worst possible time.
I had a project due yesterday and I was feeling pretty confident about it until I sat down to work on it. Suddenly, my mind was blank and I couldn't think of a single idea. I tried everything from taking a break to listening to music, but nothing seemed to work.
Eventually, I resorted to staring at the wall and hoping for some sort of divine inspiration. But all I got was a headache and a growing sense of panic as the deadline drew nearer.
Finally, in a fit of desperation, I started randomly typing words and phrases into my project, hoping that something would stick. And to my surprise, it did! I ended up with a project that was not only finished on time but also creatively interesting.
So, the lesson I learned from this experience is that sometimes you just need to let go of your expectations and dive headfirst into the unknown. Who knows, you might just surprise yourself with what you come up with.3 -
Before I started working, I used to feel like I depended on documentation and the internet a little too much owing to ultra crappy long term memory. After spending some time at my internship going through code written by "professional developers" several years senior to me and trying to write unit tests for it (surprise: the code was in production without having underwent any sort of testing), I feel like the amount of time I spend online reading usage recommendations, alternates for optimisation, best practices for writing clean and descriptive code and all that is a lot more rewarding. Some bad things help you feel good about yourself.

oh god, wake up snappy as a lubed tomato, ready for battle. Gotta take my adhd stimulant, namely Vyvanse or else it'd be cokedbenz-like, annoying the f*ck out of everyone cuz me wouldn't even manage to keep still.
So I take those 70mg punch and
my brain takes it like a sissy! It slows to a crawl, surprise, surprise motherf*cker, it's bed time, AGAIN!
Can't keep my peepers open. Why god, why that med gets me into hibernation mode??
No trouble, no trouble, son, pop some Ritalin and you'll be ready to go!
Alright, alrighty! Take a couple of those and it's like a coffin's final nail, Thanatos roundhouse kick to Dreamland! Wtf 😒
If I hadn't gone thru the "I don't need it", "better off without it" phase so many, many! times before, I'd consider not taking those, but I know, I know that even tho those first few days would be great, by week's end I'd find me self rampaging life and crashing like thunder, with a big bang7 -
Glassdoor gave Zuru the names of the bad reviewers, what a (non-)surprise!
Not glassdoor’s “fault” as it was forced to, but… hey, it was to be expected when you bind a review to an account 🤫5 -
Visiting homes with a UI dev; I explained him to be cautious with cosmetic restorations...
"Sometime people just changes the views without updating the backend. You can have funny surprise when you look behind" -
I was so tired today that I actually tried to run a program in word before realising what I was doing... I bet you can imagine my surprise when nothing happened after typing 'import runs'... jeez... my brain really shut down...

Just wanted to buy a gift for my gf, so I went to birchbox.fr to buy her a 3 months subscription (irrelevant information).
So of course I needed to create an accout in order to buy it.
But what a surprise when I received a confirmation email, with my password in PLAIN TEXT inside. I guess I do really love her for not cancelling the gift and deleting my account immediately. -
Boss changes plan & schedule for this year's projects at least 5 times within 3 weeks.
Since everything changes so frequently, would you mind making the following changes as well:
1) Give everyone a better PC/Mac
2) Get a better PM
3) A sales team that can sell things
Or maybe a more creative, decisive and organised boss so we can have all 3 wishes at once just like Kinder Surprise -
Martin Owens, a.k.a. doctormo
Man's got what it takes to be a core contributor of Inkscape and a lot more. The approach with which he balances contracts and independent development with other contributors is worth a song.
Oh-ho-ho, in fact, his wife ordered a verse from Professor Elemental & Tom Caruana as a surprise and it was a snap! 😂 It's so fitting to this gentleman's character.

Why use a standard tab width when we can all have our own unique preferences? Let's make it a surprise party every time we open a file. I just love adjusting my editor settings for every repo. Keeps me on my toes!2

Thought all the time alpha industries Inc. was an eve online Clan. Kinda surprise when another student told me it was a fashion brand. 😅

What a fucking day.
Half a day looking for functionality on github that was lost in some branch and not merged to master. All remotes was pruned. Finally restored it from some remote on production and merged to master before Saturday release. Yeah !!!!

Just checked on AltRant in the App Store Connect dashboard, and got a nasty surprise: a pile (22 in total) of crashes, all of them because of things I never thought would cause a crash...
Thank you for all the feedback, today I am going on an army exam. After that - bugfixes are supposed to arrive soon.4 -

Well, today I wake up, zombie like and I was searching throw all the new notifications on the phone...
To my surprise, a company that had interviewed me in December want to call me tp see my actual profesional status (which is a fucked up one tbh xD) because the got a great feedback at the interview and wanted to check on me again.
I will tell you how this end, I hope well (I need a job :_( )
Now I am nervous ><2 -
So until now the default env var User directory paths for Windows were all located under %userProfile%. To my surprise:
cd %userProfile%\Desktop
no longer works. Indeed, when you are even just signed in to OneDrive (which is the default, even if you disabled backups!), these retards decided it was a good idea to move all the standard library folders one level up to %userProfile%\OneDrive\ instead.
And the worst is that the locations continue to be swapped when you enable/ disable OneDrive.. WTF Microsoft7 -
To my surprise, I recently found a documentation page written by a specific co-worker of mine, which I thought could only mean he had decided to leave the company and thereby was forced to write that. Later I found out I was right about that. How sad is that? I mean that someone refuses to document his work in any way, not that this person has actually left the company. The only information on the page was something along the lines of: "Uses the gradle build system.". Ah, and "you have to have Java installed". Thanks, mate. Couldn't have figured that one out.

Professor: surprise, now you are the member of the laboratory.
Me: what!?
That's what I start coding, and love it! -
The Node and its magic tricks never cease to surprise me.
I created several new components and tried to compile them for verification. Then this big fat error popped up.
I commented out all the newly created code (didn't remove any files, just did ^A^/). Recompiled. This big fat error again.
Undid modifications I made to the files that existed there before. Recompiled. This big fat error again.
Moved the newly created files outside of the project scope (mv app/<...>/featureX/ ../bkup/). Recompiled. SUCCESS.
Moved all of those files back (mv ../bkup/featureX app/<...>/). Recompiled. SUCCESS.
wtf...2 -
Anyone here from Germany who ordered from the devRant Swag Store?
I've ordered some devDucks and I'm wondering how customs will be handled, considering that the amount I paid is above the 22€ which would pass customs just fine.
That being said, I can't wait to bring them to work and surprise my coworker. We're just 2 devs in the company, so I ordered 2 ducks and a cape to swap them. This way, we always got a duck that knows what we're talking about. :-)1 -

So I got hired by a new client as a front end dev and I’m supposed to start a project from scratch. I asked (since it’s a new project) if it makes a difference if I use Angular or React and he said “technically not” but then in the following days he said he wants to use Angular with some lame reasons that’s it’s a full framework etc etc. I used both but obviously prefer React because well I’m not an idiot. Come to figure out he knows nothing about React but has used Angular before. What a FUCKING surprise 👏 👏 👏
Why can’t people decide objectively instead of just sticking with what they know. -
A foolish choice
I have 2 partitions in one HDD that both have windows installed (dual booted), one for me and my younger brother. Earlier, I tried to rename his Windows folder (the one on the root) and I thought it will remove the dual boot and go straight to my OS.
But to my surprise, I can't boot to my OS either. Where did I go wrong? HELP!5 -
After ten reinstallation, finally ready my first Virtual Machine fully operative with FreeBSD.
An OS full of surprise for a Arch-fag like me.
It's just like Arch, but without complicated simple things. Even if the raw system don't have anything on, in ten minutes is a fully operative system with even a configurated Desktop Enviroment.
The malus: driver. Not every machine can be the host for FreeBSD, for example AMD GPU can't send audio channel throw the hdmi port.
Personally i love the BSD License, so i think this OS will be my permanent one after Windows 101 -
Is it possible to get through a work week without hearing about a surprise requirement when the deployment is supposed to be one week from now?
Bonus points: One week from now, deployment is delayed due to more whatever shit they forgot to take care of in the biz side1 -
I hate surprises.
I join office after a short leave and the other guy is out with a completely new product I have no clue of. (surprise 1)
Next, he's on leave and now I'm asked to fix bugs.(surprise 2)
Just for the curious, I ended up successfully fixing them and adding 2 features. -
Usually, the best approach to get a quick answer is by sending a DM.
To my surprise, the person mentioned that he will check it (then typical radio silence).
Next step, post in a channel that is dedicated to that topic, nothing.
Let's try an experience, I posted the same thing in a channel that the project manager has access to it. He just added an emoji and within 5 mn everyone was adding his input to the thread.
It seems that's the way how things work here 🤷♂️7 -
Surprise nobody says: read the documentation and possible the source code of the lang/framework/library/toolkit/etc. Understanding your code, how fits in the big picture and what you try to accomplish make your code better.
That explain why we have tough ops days ... -
Big meeting in our hobby app team, surprise our app is not performing weel on abandoned silverlight framework for windows phone.
Should we go for uwp or xamarin? Our code base is as mentioned in Silverlight so a tool for some conversion exists towards uwp, but is half baked.2 -
Was tasked with going over an app that my company owns to see what aspects of it we can use for our next project. So, I checkout the codebase in Android Studio, and to my surprise after going through tons of confusing classes I don't find a single comment! How am I supposed to to figure out how anything works if the previous developers didn't comment ANYTHING!
Now, I'm still fairly new to programming professionally (about 2yrs) but I've learned how beneficial comments can be.
Ugh, now I have to spend the rest of this week deciphering this code like an archaeologist inside an Egyptian pyramid. -
The best part about professors is that they ask you to come on a specific day for the recommendation but when you reach there you’re in for a surprise. Suddenly the WiFi goes away and there are departmental reviews. Wtf. This they can’t tell the day before... bloody hell knowing that you’re coming from far... away ... they’ll test you that you your patience so much that you keep wishing they die a very bad death or say under a bridge! Man o man such is life !

Came to work today expecting it to be shitty because I needed to work on a tool that gave me trouble in the past.
Lo and behold, not only did I not have a problem but I discovered the tools powers that I did not even know it could do.
I guess I improved in the last few months. -
MySQL 5.7.32 breaks innodb zlib compression in combination with xtrabackup.
Oracle started the trend to break GA cycles....
https://percona.com/blog/2020/...
Seems like the MySQL ecosystem finally splits in MariaDB (as 10.5 renamed MySQL to Mariadb) and MySQL.
I hope Oracle MySQL dies.
What Oracle does is beyond madness.
MariaDB 10.5 has it's troubles too. But at least you can look up their sources, check their bugtracker and don't get surprise foot fisting up your arse.8 -
I hate coming to work and not seeing my team. I’m contractor & expected to be there amongst the other SysAdmins. This **** make ya quit. I’m discouraged rn. I have interview for automated warehouse on Thurs. My contract almost up at current & have heard no talk of in-house hire. Not sure if I’m supposed to negotiate again or what but I have had no training and came out of nowhere as they struggle to keep and find talent and I kill it. I have completed projects, organized assets, closed mid-high ticket count weekly, etc. I like showing up. Imma go. Anyone got wisdoms or words for meh? Maybe it’s a surprise!!!🎉 Like a birthday or sumn.3

I been at my parents for almost a month now and remembered finally that I had some of my apps backed up to GDrive, mainly Dilbert downloader... Thanks to seeing some comics on devrant.
I needed to install GDrive to sync the folders but to my surprise the number of filters just to sync my projects folder which also has the installers was > 1000...
It turns out I copied .git for all the projects...4 -

God damn the android camera 2 API is a giant pain in the ass. First I got it all working on my emulator, then I thought "hey let's set how it looks on my fancy phone!.... Oh... Ok."..
So at much fiddling I managed to merge the Google sample with my requirements and got it working on my phone. Then I'm sitting in the train, fire up the emulator and to my surprise IT STOPPED WORKING ON THE EMULATOR AAARRHH!
anyway, it's working on my device which will suffice for now.
Now I'm trying to chop the video into images and... Wait... Google... What do you mean your don't support the Java media framework?!?

Long time no rant.
Spent the last two days trying to figure out why a legacy app that I adopted (was a surprise considering I'm a database developer not c#).
Long story short horrendous view causing issues retrieving data in an app that is slow enough as it is.
I may have suggested starting a proper product roadmap and using sprint's etc for managing development of said app. And the boss agreed, currently the process is someone asks for a feature and we drop everything and develop it so things get forgotten/pushed to the back of the queue.
So to cut to the chase, can anyone suggest any places I can read up about managing this properly? -
Anyone received the confirmation that their stickers are on there way or the devRant guys loves the surprise game?1
-
I think its a bit of a cliche. But when I saw "The social network" I knew this is what I was gonna do. I always loved maths, physics and logic, though. So, I guess its no surprise I ended up being a dev.2

in 2023, swift still doesn't have a tracing GC, and they are still using reference counting to decide when to deallocate an instance, surprise! what's even worse is closures are everywhere and the default way to define a closure make it possible to keep a reference to variables in the parent scope.8

Recently had trouble with some SQL. My tests would not pass, so I had to manually run it to debug it.
SELECT * FROM a JOIN b ON [...] WHERE b.foo NOTNULL
Yielded 0 of 3 rows. Expected 1
Tried querying WHERE b.foo ISNULL instead. Would have expected 2 of 3 rows, but got 1.
After googling i discovered that comparing with NULL does not return a true/false binary description, but may also return unknown if the type is not a NULL type, e.g. 42 ISNULL =" UNKNOWN

So pissed off at aws. My goal is to deny the creation of any taggable resource without having a specific tag on the organizational level. (tag policies, service control policies, etc)
Tag policies do not have any effect if the resource is created without any tag. WTF.
I managed to put together a service control policy, that makes it impossible, but since not all resources are taggable, I had to list every taggable resource in the policy and put every read action on a condition. Surprise: the policy exceeda the max size limit. FML. -
So I work with another team that develop services I use for my website.
The thing is, when they do big changes, I am not warned. So when I update my proxies, surprise, don't compile anymore, have things to change.
Worse is, I have their code right now. And the code that is deployed right now. They're not the same. So I know that I'm gonna have to change again things some days, but that's because I searched through the code. -

I see DIY aircraft videos on YouTube every now and then. All of them are from Africa. People are building poorly designed, dangerous planes that don't fly (surprise, isn't it?). I get that they have very limited resources, but what bugs me is… why not just implement WWI-era designs? They require no exotic materials (essentially wood, sheet metal and canvas), can be built relatively easily, and they are literally battle-tested. They _will_ fly. I get that for those people flight is a dream, but why skip the quickest, cheapest and safest way to achieve that dream?17

Updated to Xcode 11.4, now git doesn't work and I need to download 1GB of Dev tools to get it working.
Xcode alone is 8GB wtf is included there if I still need to download more tools?1 -
